प्रशान्ते तु पुरे हृष्टे सम्प्रवृत्ते महोत्सवे। महत्या सेनया राजा दमयन्तीमुपानयत् ॥०३-७८-१॥
praśānte tu pure hṛṣṭe sampravṛtte mahotsave। mahatyā senayā rājā damayantīm upānayat ॥03-78-1॥
[प्रशान्ते (praśānte) - having become calm; तु (tu) - but; पुरे (pure) - in the city; हृष्टे (hṛṣṭe) - having become joyous; सम्प्रवृत्ते (sampravṛtte) - having commenced; महोत्सवे (mahotsave) - great festival; महत्या (mahatyā) - with great; सेनया (senayā) - army; राजा (rājā) - king; दमयन्तीम् (damayantīm) - Damayanti; उपानयत् (upānayat) - led;]
(But when the city had become calm and joyous, and the great festival had commenced, the king, with a great army, led Damayanti.)
But when the city was peaceful and rejoicing in the midst of the great festival, the king led Damayanti forth with a large army. (03-78-1)
दमयन्तीमपि पिता सत्कृत्य परवीरहा। प्रस्थापयदमेयात्मा भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ॥०३-७८-२॥
damayantīm api pitā satkṛtya paravīrahā। prasthāpayad ameyātmā bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ॥03-78-2॥
[दमयन्तीम् (damayantīm) - Damayantī (accusative); अपि (api) - also; पिता (pitā) - the father; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; प्रस्थापयत् (prasthāpayat) - sent forth; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable soul; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; भीमपराक्रमः (bhīmaparākramaḥ) - of terrible valor;]
(Damayantī also the father, having honored, destroyer of enemy heroes, sent forth, of immeasurable soul, Bhīma, of terrible valor.)
Bhīma, the destroyer of enemy heroes, whose soul is immeasurable and who is of terrible valor, having honored Damayantī, also sent her forth. (03-78-2)
आगतायां तु वैदर्भ्यां सपुत्रायां नलो नृपः। वर्तयामास मुदितो देवराडिव नन्दने ॥०३-७८-३॥
āgatāyāṃ tu vaidarbhyāṃ saputrāyāṃ nalo nṛpaḥ। vartayāmāsa mudito devarāḍiva nandane॥03-78-3॥
[आगतायां (āgatāyām) - by return; by arrival; तु (tu) - but; वैदर्भ्यां (vaidarbhyām) - the lady of Vidarbha; (Damayantī); सपुत्रायां (saputrāyām) - with son; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; वर्तयामास (vartayāmāsa) - lived; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - joyful; देवराट् (devarāṭ) - the king of the gods; इव (iva) - like; नन्दने (nandane) - in Nandana (garden);]
(By the arrival, but, of the lady of Vidarbha, with son, Nala the king lived joyful like the king of the gods in Nandana.)
But with the arrival of the princess of Vidarbha along with her son, King Nala lived joyfully, like the king of the gods in Nandana. (03-78-3)
तथा प्रकाशतां यातो जम्बूद्वीपेऽथ राजसु। पुनः स्वे चावसद्राज्ये प्रत्याहृत्य महायशाः ॥०३-७८-४॥
tathā prakāśatāṃ yāto jambūdvīpe'tha rājasu। punaḥ sve cāvasad rājye pratyāhṛtya mahāyaśāḥ॥03-78-4॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus;, प्रकाशताम् (prakāśatām) - to fame;, यातः (yātaḥ) - gone;, जम्बूद्वीपे (jambūdvīpe) - in Jambudvīpa;, अथ (atha) - then;, राजसु (rājasu) - among kings;, पुनः (punaḥ) - again;, स्वे (sve) - in his own;, च (ca) - and;, अवसत् (avasat) - resided;, राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom;, प्रत्याहृत्य (pratyāhṛtya) - having returned;, महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - possessing great fame;]
(Thus to fame gone in Jambudvīpa then among kings. Again in his own (kingdom) and, he resided in the kingdom having returned, the one of great fame.)
Thus, having become renowned among the kings of Jambudvīpa, he, the highly renowned one, returned and again dwelt in his own kingdom. (03-78-4)
ईजे च विविधैर्यज्ञैर्विधिवत्स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः। तथा त्वमपि राजेन्द्र ससुहृद्वक्ष्यसेऽचिरात् ॥०३-७८-५॥
īje ca vividhair yajñair vidhivatsv-āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ। tathā tvam api rājendra sa-suhṛd vakṣyase'cirāt॥03-78-5॥
[ईजे (īje) - sacrificed; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - sacrifices; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः (sv-āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - with duly acquired gifts; तथा (tathā) - likewise; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ससुहृत् (sa-suhṛt) - with friends; वक्ष्यसे (vakṣyase) - you will go; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon;]
(He sacrificed also with various sacrifices according to rule with duly acquired gifts. Likewise, you also, O king, with friends, will go soon.)
He performed various sacrifices in accordance with the rules, offering properly acquired gifts. In the same way, O king, you too, along with your friends, will soon go. (03-78-5)
दुःखमेतादृशं प्राप्तो नलः परपुरञ्जयः। देवनेन नरश्रेष्ठ सभार्यो भरतर्षभ ॥०३-७८-६॥
duḥkham etādṛśaṃ prāpto nalaḥ parapurañjayaḥ। devenena naraśreṣṭha sabhāryo bharatarṣabha ॥03-78-6॥
[दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; एतादृशम् (etādṛśam) - such as this; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has obtained; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities; देवनेन (devenena) - by decree of the gods; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - best of men; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - together with wife; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Such suffering Nal, conqueror of enemy cities, has obtained by decree of the gods, best of men, together with his wife, bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, best of men, Nala, the conqueror of enemy cities, together with his wife, has undergone such suffering by the decree of the gods. (03-78-6)
एकाकिनैव सुमहन्नलेन पृथिवीपते। दुःखमासादितं घोरं प्राप्तश्चाभ्युदयः पुनः ॥०३-७८-७॥
ekākinaiva sumahannalena pṛthivīpate। duḥkham āsāditaṃ ghoraṃ prāptaś cābhyudayaḥ punaḥ ॥03-78-7॥
[एकाकिना एव (ekākinā eva) - by one alone indeed; सुमहत्-अलेन (sumahat-alena) - by very great distress; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आसादितम् (āsāditam) - attained; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; प्राप्तः च (prāptaḥ ca) - and obtained; अभ्युदयः पुनः (abhyudayaḥ punaḥ) - prosperity again;]
(By one alone indeed, by very great distress, O lord of the earth, suffering terrible was attained, and prosperity was obtained again.)
O lord of the earth, by being alone and through very great distress, terrible suffering was experienced, but prosperity was subsequently achieved again. (03-78-7)
त्वं पुनर्भ्रातृसहितः कृष्णया चैव पाण्डव। रमसेऽस्मिन्महारण्ये धर्ममेवानुचिन्तयन् ॥०३-७८-८॥
tvaṃ punar-bhrātṛ-sahitaḥ kṛṣṇayā caiva pāṇḍava। ramase'smin-mahāraṇye dharmam-evānucintayan ॥03-78-8॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुनः (punar) - again; भ्रातृसहितः (bhrātṛ-sahitaḥ) - together with brothers; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; रमसे (ramase) - you enjoy; अस्मिन्महारण्ये (asmin-mahāraṇye) - in this great forest; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (eva) - only; अनुचिन्तयन् (anucintayan) - reflecting;]
(You again, together with brothers and indeed (with) Kṛṣṇā, O son of Pāṇḍu, you enjoy in this great forest, reflecting only on dharma.)
O son of Pāṇḍu, once again, together with your brothers and Kṛṣṇā, you remain in this great forest, devoted solely to thinking on dharma. (03-78-8)
ब्राह्मणैश्च महाभागैर्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगैः। नित्यमन्वास्यसे राजंस्तत्र का परिदेवना ॥०३-७८-९॥
brāhmaṇaiśca mahābhāgairveda-vedāṅga-pāragaiḥ। nityamanvāsyase rājaṃstatra kā paridevanā॥03-78-9॥
[ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; महाभागैः (mahābhāgaiḥ) - by greatly fortunate ones; वेदवेदाङ्गपारगैः (veda-vedāṅga-pāragaiḥ) - by those who have mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अन्वास्यसे (anvāsyase) - you are accompanied; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत्र (tatra) - there; का (kā) - what; परिदेवना (paridevanā) - lamentation;]
(By Brāhmaṇas and by greatly fortunate ones, by those who have mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, always you are accompanied, O king; there, what lamentation?)
O king, since you are always accompanied by Brāhmaṇas, greatly fortunate ones, and those who have mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, what cause is there for lamentation there? (03-78-9)
इतिहासमिमं चापि कलिनाशनमुच्यते। शक्यमाश्वासितुं श्रुत्वा त्वद्विधेन विशां पते ॥०३-७८-१०॥
itihāsam imaṁ cāpi kalināśanam ucyate। śakyam āśvāsituṁ śrutvā tvadvidhena viśāṁ pate ॥03-78-10॥
[इतिहासम् (itihāsam) - account; story; इमम् (imam) - this; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कलिनाशनम् (kalināśanam) - destruction of Kali (the evil age); उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; आश्वासितुम् (āśvāsitum) - to be consoled; to be comforted; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; त्वद्विधेन (tvadvidhena) - by one like you; विशां पते (viśāṁ pate) - O lord of the people;]
(This account also is said (to be) the destruction of Kali; it is possible to be consoled having heard (it) by one like you, O lord of the people.)
This story, too, is said to destroy the influence of Kali; it is possible for someone like you to be consoled upon hearing it, O lord of the people. (03-78-10)
अस्थिरत्वं च सञ्चिन्त्य पुरुषार्थस्य नित्यदा। तस्याये च व्यये चैव समाश्वसिहि मा शुचः ॥०३-७८-११॥
asthiratvaṁ ca sañcintya puruṣārthasya nityadā। tasyāye ca vyaye caiva samāśvasihi mā śucaḥ॥ 03-78-11॥
[अस्थिरत्वं (asthiratvaṁ) - impermanence; च (ca) - and; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; पुरुषार्थस्य (puruṣārthasya) - of human pursuit; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; तस्य (tasya) - its; आये (āye) - in gain; च (ca) - and; व्यये (vyaye) - in loss; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; समाश्वसिहि (samāśvasihi) - be consoled; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve;]
(And, having considered always the impermanence of human pursuit, in its gain and in loss also, be consoled, do not grieve.)
Always considering the impermanence of human pursuits, whether there is gain or loss, be consoled and do not grieve. (03-78-11)
ये चेदं कथयिष्यन्ति नलस्य चरितं महत्। श्रोष्यन्ति चाप्यभीक्ष्णं वै नालक्ष्मीस्तान्भजिष्यति ॥ अर्थास्तस्योपपत्स्यन्ते धन्यतां च गमिष्यति ॥०३-७८-१२॥
ye cedam kathayiṣyanti nalasya caritaṃ mahat। śroṣyanti cāpyabhīkṣṇaṃ vai nālakṣmīstānbhajiṣyati ॥ arthāstasyo-papatsyante dhanyatāṃ ca gamiṣyati ॥03-78-12॥
[ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; इदं (idam) - this; कथयिष्यन्ति (kathayiṣyanti) - will narrate; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; चरितं (caritaṃ) - deed; महत् (mahat) - great; श्रोष्यन्ति (śroṣyanti) - will hear; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभीक्ष्णं (abhīkṣṇam) - again and again; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; अलक्ष्मीः (alakṣmīḥ) - misfortune; तान् (tān) - those; भजिष्यति (bhajiṣyati) - will associate; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - riches; तस्य (tasya) - to him; उपपत्स्यन्ते (upapatsyante) - will arise; धन्यतां (dhanyatāṃ) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will attain;]
(Who and this will narrate of Nala's great deed, will hear also again and again indeed, not misfortune those will associate. Riches to him will arise, prosperity and will attain. (03-78-12))
Those who narrate this great deed of Nala and those who repeatedly hear it—misfortune will not affect them. Wealth will come to them and they will attain prosperity. (03-78-12)
इतिहासमिमं श्रुत्वा पुराणं शश्वदुत्तमम्। पुत्रान्पौत्रान्पशूंश्चैव वेत्स्यते नृषु चाग्र्यताम् ॥ अरोगः प्रीतिमांश्चैव भविष्यति न संशयः ॥०३-७८-१३॥
itihāsam imaṃ śrutvā purāṇaṃ śaśvat uttamam। putrān pautrān paśūṃś ca eva vetsyate nṛṣu ca agryatām॥ arogah prītimān ca eva bhaviṣyati na saṃśayah॥03-78-13॥
[इतिहासम् (itihāsam) - history; इमम् (imam) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - Purāṇa; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - eternal; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; पौत्रान् (pautrān) - grandsons; पशून् (paśūn) - cattle; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वेत्स्यते (vetsyate) - will obtain; नृषु (nṛṣu) - among men; च (ca) - and; अग्र्यताम् (agryatām) - excellence; अरोगः (arogah) - free from disease; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of delight; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayah) - doubt; ०३-७८-१३ (03-78-13) -;]
(Having heard this supreme eternal Purāṇa history, indeed one will obtain sons, grandsons, and cattle, and excellence among men. Free from disease and full of delight indeed one will become, not (is there any) doubt. (03-78-13))
Having heard this supreme eternal Purāṇa history, one will gain sons, grandsons, cattle, and distinction among men. He will be free from disease and full of joy—there is no doubt. (03-78-13)
भयं पश्यसि यच्च त्वमाह्वयिष्यति मां पुनः। अक्षज्ञ इति तत्तेऽहं नाशयिष्यामि पार्थिव ॥०३-७८-१४॥
bhayaṃ paśyasi yac ca tvam āhvayiṣyati māṃ punaḥ। akṣajña iti tat te'haṃ nāśayiṣyāmi pārthiva॥03-78-14॥
[भयम् (bhayam) - fear; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - (you) see; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आह्वयिष्यति (āhvayiṣyati) - will summon; माम् (mām) - me; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अक्षज्ञ (akṣajña) - one who knows dice; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; नाशयिष्यामि (nāśayiṣyāmi) - will destroy; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king;]
(Fear you see and which you will summon me again. 'Knower of dice' thus that for you I will destroy, O king.)
You see fear, and if you summon me again, thinking me a 'knower of dice', I will destroy that for you, O king. (03-78-14)
वेदाक्षहृदयं कृत्स्नमहं सत्यपराक्रम। उपपद्यस्व कौन्तेय प्रसन्नोऽहं ब्रवीमि ते ॥०३-७८-१५॥
vedākṣahṛdayaṃ kṛtsnamahaṃ satyaparākrama। upapadyasva kaunteya prasanno'haṃ bravīmi te ॥03-78-15॥
[वेद (veda) - I know; अक्ष (akṣa) - the dice; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - the heart; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; अहम् (aham) - I; सत्यपराक्रम (satya-parākrama) - O truly valiant (one); उपपद्यस्व (upapadyasva) - approach; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - pleased; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; ते (te) - to you;]
(I know the heart of the dice entirely, I, O truly valiant one. Approach, O son of Kunti, I am pleased, I say to you.)
O son of Kunti, I know the entire heart of the dice; O truly valiant one, approach. I am pleased, and I say this to you. (03-78-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो हृष्टमना राजा बृहदश्वमुवाच ह। भगवन्नक्षहृदयं ज्ञातुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥०३-७८-१६॥
tato hṛṣṭamanā rājā bṛhadaśvam uvāca ha। bhagavan nakṣa-hṛdayaṃ jñātum icchāmi tattvataḥ॥03-78-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हृष्टमना (hṛṣṭamanā) - with gladdened mind; राजा (rājā) - the king; बृहदश्वम् (bṛhadaśvam) - Bṛhadaśva (proper noun); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; नक्षहृदयं (nakṣa-hṛdayam) - the heart (nature) of dice; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - in truth (exactly);]
(Then, with gladdened mind, the king spoke to Bṛhadaśva indeed: "O venerable one, the heart of dice I wish to know in truth." (03-78-16))
Then the king, his mind gladdened, indeed spoke to Bṛhadaśva: "O venerable one, I wish to know the true nature of dice." (03-78-16)
ततोऽक्षहृदयं प्रादात्पाण्डवाय महात्मने। दत्त्वा चाश्वशिरोऽगच्छदुपस्प्रष्टुं महातपाः ॥०३-७८-१७॥
tato'kṣa-hṛdayaṃ prādāt pāṇḍavāya mahātmane। dattvā ca aśva-śiraḥ agacchat upaspraṣṭuṃ mahātapāḥ ॥03-78-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अक्षहृदयं (akṣa-hṛdayam) - dice-heart; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; पाण्डवाय (pāṇḍavāya) - to Pāṇḍava; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled one; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; च (ca) - and; अश्वशिरः (aśva-śiraḥ) - Aśvaśiras; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; उपस्प्रष्टुम् (upaspraṣṭum) - to bathe; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic;]
(Then the dice-heart he gave to Pāṇḍava, the great-souled one. Having given, Aśvaśiras went to bathe, the great ascetic.)
Then he gave the heart of dice to Pāṇḍava, the great-souled one; and having done so, the great ascetic Aśvaśiras went to bathe. (03-78-17)
बृहदश्वे गते पार्थमश्रौषीत्सव्यसाचिनम्। वर्तमानं तपस्युग्रे वायुभक्षं मनीषिणम् ॥०३-७८-१८॥
bṛhadaśve gate pārtham aśrauṣīt savyasācinam। vartamānaṁ tapasy ugre vāyubhakṣaṁ manīṣiṇam॥03-78-18॥
[बृहदश्वे (bṛhadaśve) - when Bṛhadaśva had gone; गते (gate) - having gone; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha; अश्रौषीत् (aśrauṣīt) - he heard; सव्यसाचिनम् (savyasācinam) - Savyasācin (Arjuna); वर्तमानम् (vartamānam) - dwelling; तपस्य् (tapasy) - in austerity; उग्रेस् (ugre) - great; वायुभक्षम् (vāyubhakṣam) - subsisting on air; मनीषिणम् (manīṣiṇam) - the wise man;]
(When Bṛhadaśva had gone, he heard of Pārtha, Savyasācin, dwelling in great austerity, subsisting on air, the wise man.)
When Bṛhadaśva departed, someone heard of Arjuna, the ambidextrous one, who was residing in severe austerity, subsisting on air, a man of wisdom. (03-78-18)
ब्राह्मणेभ्यस्तपस्विभ्यः सम्पतद्भ्यस्ततस्ततः। तीर्थशैलवरेभ्यश्च समेतेभ्यो दृढव्रतः ॥०३-७८-१९॥
brāhmaṇebhyastapasvibhyaḥ sampatadbhyaḥ tatastataḥ। tīrthaśailavarebhyaśca sametebhyo dṛḍhavrataḥ॥03-78-19॥
[ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - from the brāhmaṇas; तपस्विभ्यः (tapasvibhyaḥ) - from ascetics; सम्पतद्भ्यः (sampatadbhyaḥ) - from those who had assembled; ततस्ततः (tatastataḥ) - from here and there; तीर्थशैलवरेभ्यः (tīrthaśailavarebhyaḥ) - from the excellent holy places and mountains; च (ca) - and; समेतेभ्यः (sametebhyaḥ) - from those who were assembled; दृढव्रतः (dṛḍhavrataḥ) - he of firm vow;]
(He of firm vow (dṛḍhavrataḥ), from the brāhmaṇas (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ), from ascetics (tapasvibhyaḥ), from those who had assembled (sampatadbhyaḥ), from here and there (tatastataḥ), from the excellent holy places and mountains (tīrthaśailavarebhyaḥ ca), from those who were assembled (sametebhyaḥ).)
The one of firm vow received (respect) from the brāhmaṇas, ascetics, people gathered from all sides, the excellent holy places and mountains, as well as from all those who had assembled. (03-78-19)
इति पार्थो महाबाहुर्दुरापं तप आस्थितः। न तथा दृष्टपूर्वोऽन्यः कश्चिदुग्रतपा इति ॥०३-७८-२०॥
iti pārtho mahābāhur durāpaṃ tapa āsthitaḥ। na tathā dṛṣṭapūrvo'nyaḥ kaścid ugratapā iti ॥03-78-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; दुरापम् (durāpam) - difficult to attain; तप (tapa) - austerity; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - undertaken; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; दृष्टपूर्वः (dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - seen before; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; उग्रतपा (ugratapā) - severe-ascetic; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Thus Pārtha, mighty-armed, difficult-to-attain austerity undertaken. Not thus seen-before any other severe-ascetic thus.)
Thus Pārtha, the mighty-armed, undertook an austerity difficult to attain. No other severe ascetic has ever been seen like this before. (03-78-20)
यथा धनञ्जयः पार्थस्तपस्वी नियतव्रतः। मुनिरेकचरः श्रीमान्धर्मो विग्रहवानिव ॥०३-७८-२१॥
yathā dhanañjayaḥ pārthas tapasvī niyatavrataḥ। munir ekacaraḥ śrīmān dharmo vigrahavān iva॥03-78-21॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Partha (son of Pritha, another name for Arjuna); तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; नियतव्रतः (niyatavrataḥ) - one with regulated vows; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; एकचरः (ekacaraḥ) - wandering alone; श्रीमाँ (śrīmān) - endowed with splendor; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; विग्रहवानिव (vigrahavān iva) - as if embodied;]
(Just as Dhananjaya, Partha, the ascetic, observer of regulated vows; a sage, wandering alone, endowed with splendor, Dharma as if embodied.)
Just as Dhananjaya, Partha, the ascetic of firm vows, is like a sage who roams alone and is endowed with splendor, so Dharma himself seems to have taken form. (03-78-21)
तं श्रुत्वा पाण्डवो राजंस्तप्यमानं महावने। अन्वशोचत कौन्तेयः प्रियं वै भ्रातरं जयम् ॥०३-७८-२२॥
taṃ śrutvā pāṇḍavo rājaṃstapyamānaṃ mahāvane। anvaśocata kaunteyaḥ priyaṃ vai bhrātaraṃ jayam ॥03-78-22॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna or son of Pāṇḍu); राजन् (rājan) - O king; तप्यमानं (tapyamānaṃ) - being tormented; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; अन्वशोचत (anvaśocata) - he grieved after; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kuntī; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; वै (vai) - indeed; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - brother; जयम् (jayam) - Jaya (another name for Yudhiṣṭhira or victory);]
(Him having heard the Pāṇḍava, O king, being tormented in the great forest, grieved after the dear indeed brother Jaya.)
Hearing of his dear brother Jaya being tormented in the great forest, the son of Kunti (the Pāṇḍava), O king, deeply grieved for him. (03-78-22)
दह्यमानेन तु हृदा शरणार्थी महावने। ब्राह्मणान्विविधज्ञानान्पर्यपृच्छद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-७८-२३॥
dahyamānena tu hṛdā śaraṇārthī mahāvane। brāhmaṇān vividhajñānān paryapṛcchad yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-78-23॥
[दह्यमानेन (dahyamānena) - by (his) burning (agonized); तु (tu) - but; हृदा (hṛdā) - with (his) heart; शरणार्थी (śaraṇārthī) - seeking refuge; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; विविधज्ञानान् (vividhajñānān) - possessing various knowledge; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - he questioned; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(But with a burning heart, seeking refuge, in the great forest, Yudhiṣṭhira questioned the Brāhmaṇas possessing various knowledge.)
But in the great forest, Yudhiṣṭhira, his heart burning and seeking refuge, questioned the Brāhmaṇas who possessed various knowledge. (03-78-23)
