भगवन्काम्यकात्पार्थे गते मे प्रपितामहे। पाण्डवाः किमकुर्वन्त तमृते सव्यसाचिनम् ॥०३-७९-१॥
bhagavan-kāmyakāt pārthe gate me prapitāmahe। pāṇḍavāḥ kim akurvanta tam ṛte savyasācinam॥03-79-1॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; काम्यकात् (kāmyakāt) - from Kāmyaka (forest); पार्थे (pārthe) - with Pārtha (Arjuna); गते (gate) - having gone; मे (me) - my; प्रपितामहे (prapitāmahe) - great-grandfather; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; किम् (kim) - what; अकुर्वन्त (akurvanta) - did; तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - without; सव्यसाचिनम् (savyasācinam) - Savyasācin (ambidextrous - Arjuna);]
(O Lord, after my great-grandfather had gone from Kāmyaka with Pārtha, what did the Pāṇḍavas do without him, Savyasācin?)
O Lord, when my great-grandfather went from Kāmyaka forest with Pārtha, what did the Pāṇḍavas do without him, Savyasācin? (03-79-1)
स हि तेषां महेष्वासो गतिरासीदनीकजित्। आदित्यानां यथा विष्णुस्तथैव प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-७९-२॥
sa hi teṣāṃ maheṣvāso gatir āsīd anīkajit। ādityānāṃ yathā viṣṇus tathaiva pratibhāti me ॥03-79-2॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - the great archer; गतिः (gatiḥ) - support; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; अनीकजित् (anīkajit) - conqueror of armies; आदित्यानाम् (ādityānām) - of the Ādityas; यथा (yathā) - just as; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me;]
(He indeed of them, the great archer, support was, conqueror of armies. Of the Ādityas, just as Viṣṇu, in the same way appears to me.)
He, the great archer and conqueror of armies, was indeed their support. Just as Viṣṇu is among the Ādityas, so he appears to me. (03-79-2)
तेनेन्द्रसमवीर्येण सङ्ग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिना। विनाभूता वने वीराः कथमासन्पितामहाः ॥०३-७९-३॥
tenendrasamavīryeṇa saṅgrāmeṣvanivartinā। vinābhūtā vane vīrāḥ kathamāsanpitāmahāḥ॥03-79-3॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; इन्द्रसमवीर्येण (indrasamavīryeṇa) - with Indra-equal-strength; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अनिवर्तिना (anivartinā) - not turning back; विना (vinā) - without; अभूता (abhūtā) - had been; वने (vane) - in the forest; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; कथम् (katham) - how; आसन् (āsan) - were; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - ancestors;]
(By him, with Indra-equal strength, in battles not turning back, without, had been in the forest, heroes, how, were, ancestors.)
How could the heroic ancestors, who were as powerful as Indra and never turned back in battle, have survived in the forest without him? (03-79-3)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

गते तु काम्यकात्तात पाण्डवे सव्यसाचिनि। बभूवुः कौरवेयास्ते दुःखशोकपरायणाः ॥०३-७९-४॥
gate tu kāmyakāttāta pāṇḍave savyasācini। babhūvuḥ kauraveyāste duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ ॥03-79-4॥
[गते (gate) - having gone; तु (tu) - but; काम्यकात् (kāmyakāt) - from Kāmyaka; तात (tāta) - dear one; पाण्डवे (pāṇḍave) - the Pāṇḍava; सव्यसाचिनि (savyasācini) - Arjuna; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; कौरवेयाः (kauraveyāḥ) - the Kauravas; ते (te) - they; दुःखशोकपरायणाः (duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to sorrow and grief;]
(But when Arjuna, the Pāṇḍava, dear one, had gone from Kāmyaka, those Kauravas became devoted to sorrow and grief.)
But, O dear one, when Arjuna the Pāṇḍava departed from Kāmyaka, those Kauravas became overcome with sorrow and grief. (03-79-4)
आक्षिप्तसूत्रा मणयश्छिन्नपक्षा इव द्विजाः। अप्रीतमनसः सर्वे बभूवुरथ पाण्डवाः ॥०३-७९-५॥
ākṣipta-sūtrā maṇayaś-chinna-pakṣā iva dvijāḥ। aprīta-manasaḥ sarve babhūvur-atha pāṇḍavāḥ॥03-79-5॥
[आक्षिप्तसूत्रा (ākṣipta-sūtrā) - with their threads (strings) pulled out; (torn from their strands); मणयः (maṇayaḥ) - gems; छिन्नपक्षा (chinna-pakṣā) - with wings cut off; (who have lost their wings); इव (iva) - like; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born (brahmins or birds); अप्रीतमनसः (aprīta-manasaḥ) - having displeased minds; (discontented in mind); सर्वे (sarve) - all; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; अथ (atha) - then; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(With their threads pulled out, gems, like twice-born ones with wings cut off; all with displeased minds then the Pāṇḍavas became.)
The Pāṇḍavas then all became discontented in mind, like gems whose strings have been pulled out or like twice-born ones with their wings cut off. (03-79-5)
वनं च तदभूत्तेन हीनमक्लिष्टकर्मणा। कुबेरेण यथा हीनं वनं चैत्ररथं तथा ॥०३-७९-६॥
vanaṃ ca tad abhūt tena hīnam akliṣṭa-karmaṇā। kubereṇa yathā hīnaṃ vanaṃ caitrarathaṃ tathā ॥03-79-6॥
[वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; च (ca) - and; तत् (tad) - that; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; तेन (tena) - by him; हीनम् (hīnam) - deprived; अक्लिष्टकर्मणा (akliṣṭa-karmaṇā) - by one whose actions are unwearied; कुबेरेण (kubereṇa) - by Kubera; यथा (yathā) - just as; हीनम् (hīnam) - deprived; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; चैत्ररथं (caitraratham) - Caitraratha; तथा (tathā) - so; ॥०३-७९-६॥ (॥03-79-6॥) -;]
(And that forest became deprived by him whose actions are unwearied, just as the Caitraratha forest became deprived by Kubera.)

तमृते पुरुषव्याघ्रं पाण्डवा जनमेजय। मुदमप्राप्नुवन्तो वै काम्यके न्यवसंस्तदा ॥०३-७९-७॥
tam ṛte puruṣavyāghram pāṇḍavā janamejaya। mudam aprāpnuvanto vai kāmyake nyavasaṁs tadā ॥03-79-7॥
[तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - except; पुरुषव्याघ्रं (puruṣavyāghram) - tiger among men; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya; मुदम् (mudam) - joy; अप्राप्नुवन्तः (aprāpnuvantaḥ) - not attaining; वै (vai) - indeed; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka (forest); न्यवसन् (nyavasan) - dwelt; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Except him, the tiger among men, the Pāṇḍavas, O Janamejaya, not attaining joy, indeed, in Kāmyaka dwelt then.)
O Janamejaya, except for him, the tiger among men, the Pāṇḍavas then dwelt in Kāmyaka forest without attaining any joy. (03-79-7)
ब्राह्मणार्थे पराक्रान्ताः शुद्धैर्बाणैर्महारथाः। निघ्नन्तो भरतश्रेष्ठ मेध्यान्बहुविधान्मृगान् ॥०३-७९-८॥
brāhmaṇārthe parākrāntāḥ śuddhairbāṇairmahārathāḥ। nighnanto bharataśreṣṭha medhyān bahuvidhān mṛgān॥03-79-8॥
[ब्राह्मणार्थे (brāhmaṇārthe) - for the sake of a brāhmaṇa; पराक्रान्ताः (parākrāntāḥ) - valiant warriors; शुद्धैः (śuddhaiḥ) - with pure; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; निघ्नन्तः (nighnantaḥ) - slaying; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; मेध्यान् (medhyān) - fit for sacrifice; बहुविधान् (bahuvidhān) - of various kinds; मृगान् (mṛgān) - animals;]
(For the sake of a brāhmaṇa, valiant warriors with pure arrows, great chariot-warriors, slaying, O best of the Bharatas, sacrificial animals of various kinds.)
O best of the Bharatas, the great chariot-warriors, who were valiant, slew animals of many kinds fit for sacrifice with pure arrows, for the sake of a brāhmaṇa. (03-79-8)
नित्यं हि पुरुषव्याघ्रा वन्याहारमरिंदमाः। विप्रसृत्य समाहृत्य ब्राह्मणेभ्यो न्यवेदयन् ॥०३-७९-९॥
nityaṃ hi puruṣavyāghrā vanyāhāram ariṃdamāḥ। viprasṛtya samāhṛtya brāhmaṇebhyo nyavedayan ॥03-79-9॥
[नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरुषव्याघ्राः (puruṣavyāghrāḥ) - tiger-men (valiant men); वन्याहारम् (vanyāhāram) - forest-produce (food obtained from the forest); अरिंदमाः (ariṃdamāḥ) - destroyers of enemies; विप्रसृत्य (viprasṛtya) - having distributed; समाहृत्य (samāhṛtya) - having collected; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - offered;]
(Always indeed the tiger-men, destroyers of enemies, having collected forest-produce, having distributed it, offered to the Brāhmaṇas.)
The valiant men, always destroyers of enemies, would collect forest food and distribute it, offering it to the Brāhmaṇas. (03-79-9)
एवं ते न्यवसंस्तत्र सोत्कण्ठाः पुरुषर्षभाः। अहृष्टमनसः सर्वे गते राजन्धनञ्जये ॥०३-७९-१०॥
evaṁ te nyavasaṁs tatra sotkaṇṭhāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। ahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve gate rājann dhanañjaye ॥03-79-10॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; ते (te) - they; न्यवसंस्तत्र (nyavasaṁs tatra) - dwelt there; सोत्कण्ठाः (sotkaṇṭhāḥ) - with yearning; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; अहृष्टमनसः (ahṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with joyless minds; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गते (gate) - with (him) gone; राजन् (rājan) - O King; धनञ्जये (dhanañjaye) - when Dhanañjaya;]
(Thus they dwelt there with yearning, the bulls among men, all with joyless minds, O King, with Dhanañjaya gone.)
Thus, O King, those foremost among men stayed there longing for Dhanañjaya, all with heavy hearts, when he had departed. (03-79-10)
अथ विप्रोषितं वीरं पाञ्चाली मध्यमं पतिम्। स्मरन्ती पाण्डवश्रेष्ठमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७९-११॥
atha viproṣitaṃ vīraṃ pāñcālī madhyamaṃ patim। smarantī pāṇḍavaśreṣṭham idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥03-79-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; विप्रोषितं (viproṣitaṃ) - departed; वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Pāñcālī; मध्यमं (madhyamaṃ) - middle; पतिम् (patim) - husband; स्मरन्ती (smarantī) - remembering; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठम् (pāṇḍavaśreṣṭham) - best of the Pāṇḍavas; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then, departed hero, Pāñcālī, the middle husband, remembering the best of the Pāṇḍavas, this speech said.)
Then Pāñcālī, remembering her middle husband, the best of the Pāṇḍavas, spoke this speech in the absence of the heroic man. (03-79-11)
योऽर्जुनेनार्जुनस्तुल्यो द्विबाहुर्बहुबाहुना। तमृते पाण्डवश्रेष्ठं वनं न प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-७९-१२॥
yo'rjunenārjunastulyo dvibāhurbahubāhunā। tamṛte pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaṃ vanaṃ na pratibhāti me ॥03-79-12॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; अर्जुनस्तुल्यः (arjunastulyaḥ) - equal to Arjuna; द्विबाहुः (dvibāhuḥ) - two-armed; बहुबाहुना (bahubāhunā) - by the many-armed (person); तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - except; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठम् (pāṇḍavaśreṣṭham) - the best among the Pāṇḍavas; वनम् (vanam) - forest; न (na) - not; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me;]
(Who by Arjuna, equal to Arjuna, two-armed by the many-armed, him except, best of the Pāṇḍavas, the forest does not appear to me.)
To me, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, except for him who is like Arjuna—two-armed among those with many arms—the forest does not appeal. (03-79-12)
शून्यामिव च पश्यामि तत्र तत्र महीमिमाम् ॥०३-७९-१२॥
śūnyām iva ca paśyāmi tatra tatra mahīm imām ॥03-79-12॥
[शून्याम् (śūnyām) - empty;, इव (iva) - like;, च (ca) - and;, पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see;, तत्र (tatra) - here;, तत्र (tatra) - there;, महीम् (mahīm) - earth;, इमाम् (imām) - this;,;]
(Empty like and I see here there earth this.)
And I see this earth as if empty here and there. (03-79-12)
बह्वाश्चर्यमिदं चापि वनं कुसुमितद्रुमम्। न तथा रमणीयं मे तमृते सव्यसाचिनम् ॥०३-७९-१३॥
bahvāścaryam idaṁ cāpi vanaṁ kusumita-drumam। na tathā ramaṇīyaṁ me tam ṛte savyasācinam॥03-79-13॥
[बहु-अश्चर्यम् (bahu-aścaryam) - very wonderful; इदं (idaṁ) - this; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वनम् (vanam) - forest; कुसुमित-द्रुमम् (kusumita-drumam) - flowering with trees; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; रमणीयम् (ramaṇīyam) - pleasant; मे (me) - to me; तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - without; सव्यसाचिन्-अम् (savyasācinam) - Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Very wonderful this also and the forest flowering with trees; not so pleasant to me without him Savyasācin.)
This forest, so full of flowering trees, is indeed very wonderful; yet it is not so pleasant to me without Savyasācin (Arjuna). (03-79-13)
नीलाम्बुदसमप्रख्यं मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमम्। तमृते पुण्डरीकाक्षं काम्यकं नातिभाति मे ॥०३-७९-१४॥
nīlāmbudasamaprakhyaṃ mattamātaṅgavikramam। tamṛte puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ kāmyakaṃ nātibhāti me ॥03-79-14॥
[नीलाम्बुदसमप्रख्यं (nīlāmbudasamaprakhyam) - dark-cloud-like; मत्तमातङ्गविक्रमम् (mattamātaṅgavikramam) - with the stride of an intoxicated elephant; तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - except; पुण्डरीकाक्षम् (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - lotus-eyed; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - the Kāmyaka (forest); न (na) - not; अतिभाति (atibhāti) - shines much; मे (me) - to me;]
(Dark-cloud-like, with the stride of an intoxicated elephant—except him, the lotus-eyed one—the Kāmyaka (forest) does not shine much to me.)
The Kāmyaka forest does not appear very beautiful to me without him, the lotus-eyed one, whose appearance is like a dark cloud and whose stride is like that of a proud elephant. (03-79-14)
यस्य स्म धनुषो घोषः श्रूयतेऽशनिनिस्वनः। न लभे शर्म तं राजन्स्मरन्ती सव्यसाचिनम् ॥०३-७९-१५॥
yasya sma dhanuṣo ghoṣaḥ śrūyate'śaninisvanaḥ। na labhe śarma taṃ rājansmarantī savyasācinam॥03-79-15॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whose; स्म (sma) - indeed; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; घोषः (ghoṣaḥ) - sound; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; अशनिनिस्वनः (aśaninisvanaḥ) - thunder-like rumble; न (na) - not; लभे (labhe) - I obtain; शर्म (śarma) - peace; तं (taṃ) - him; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्मरन्ती (smarantī) - remembering; सव्यसाचिनम् (savyasācinam) - Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Of whom indeed the sound of the bow is heard like the rumble of thunder, not I obtain peace, O king, remembering him, Savyasācin.)
O king, remembering Savyasācin (Arjuna), whose bow's sound resembles thunder, I find no peace. (03-79-15)
तथा लालप्यमानां तां निशम्य परवीरहा। भीमसेनो महाराज द्रौपदीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७९-१६॥
tathā lālapyamānāṃ tāṃ niśamya paravīrahā। bhīmaseno mahārāja draupadīmidamabravīt॥03-79-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; लालप्यमानां (lālapyamānām) - lamenting; तां (tāṃ) - her; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - slayer of enemy heroes; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadi; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus, hearing her lamenting, the slayer of enemy heroes, Bhimasena, O great king, to Draupadi this said.)
Thus, O great king, hearing Draupadi lamenting, Bhimasena, the slayer of enemy heroes, said this to her. (03-79-16)
मनःप्रीतिकरं भद्रे यद्ब्रवीषि सुमध्यमे। तन्मे प्रीणाति हृदयममृतप्राशनोपमम् ॥०३-७९-१७॥
manaḥ-prītikaraṃ bhadre yad bravīṣi sumadhyame। tan me prīṇāti hṛdayam amṛta-prāśana-upamam ॥03-79-17॥
[मनःप्रीतिकरम् (manaḥ-prītikaram) - mind-pleasing; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious lady; यत् (yat) - which; ब्रवीषि (bravīṣi) - you speak; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O slender-waisted one; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - delights; हृदयम् (hṛdayam) - heart; अमृतप्राशनोपमम् (amṛta-prāśana-upamam) - like the tasting of nectar;]
(O auspicious lady, O slender-waisted one, that which you speak, pleasing to the mind, that to me delights my heart like the tasting of nectar.)
O auspicious and slender-waisted lady, whatever pleasing words you speak delight my heart like the taste of nectar. (03-79-17)
यस्य दीर्घौ समौ पीनौ भुजौ परिघसंनिभौ। मौर्वीकृतकिणौ वृत्तौ खड्गायुधगदाधरौ ॥०३-७९-१८॥
yasya dīrghau samau pīnau bhujau parighasaṃnibhau। maurvīkṛtakiṇau vṛttau khaḍgāyudhagadādharau ॥03-79-18॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; दीर्घौ (dīrghau) - long (dual); समौ (samau) - equal (dual); पीनौ (pīnau) - thick (dual); भुजौ (bhujau) - arms (dual); परिघसंनिभौ (parighasaṃnibhau) - resembling iron clubs (dual); मौर्वीकृतकिणौ (maurvīkṛtakiṇau) - with wrist-guards made of hemp (dual); वृत्तौ (vṛttau) - rounded/circular (dual); खड्गायुधगदाधरौ (khaḍgāyudhagadādharau) - bearer of sword, weapon and mace (dual);]
(Whose long, equal, thick arms, resembling iron clubs, with wrist-guards made of hemp, rounded, bearer of sword, weapon and mace.)
He whose two arms are long, equal, thick, resembling iron clubs, fitted with hempen wrist-guards, rounded, and bear a sword, other weapons, and a mace. (03-79-18)
निष्काङ्गदकृतापीडौ पञ्चशीर्षाविवोरगौ। तमृते पुरुषव्याघ्रं नष्टसूर्यमिदं वनम् ॥०३-७९-१९॥
niṣkāṅgadakṛtāpīḍau pañcaśīrṣāvivoragau। tamṛte puruṣavyāghraṃ naṣṭasūryamidaṃ vanam ॥03-79-19॥
[निष्काङ्गदकृतापीडौ (niṣkāṅgadakṛtāpīḍau) - having diadem (apīḍa) made from armlets; पञ्चशीर्षाविव (pañcaśīrṣā iva) - like (iva) (a serpent) with five heads; उरगौ (uragau) - serpents; तम् (tam) - that (man); ऋते (ṛte) - except; पुरुषव्याघ्रं (puruṣavyāghram) - tiger among men; नष्टसूर्यम् (naṣṭasūryam) - with the sun disappeared; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Having diadems made from armlets, like serpents with five heads; except that tiger among men, this forest is as with the sun disappeared.)
Except for that tiger among men—who wears diadems fashioned from armlets like serpents with five heads—this forest is as if the sun has disappeared. (03-79-19)
यमाश्रित्य महाबाहुं पाञ्चालाः कुरवस्तथा। सुराणामपि यत्तानां पृतनासु न बिभ्यति ॥०३-७९-२०॥
yamāśritya mahābāhuṃ pāñcālāḥ kuravastathā। surāṇāmapi yattānāṃ pṛtanāsu na bibhyati ॥03-79-20॥
[यम् (yam) - whom; (refers to the person depended upon); आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṃ) - mighty-armed; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pāñcālas; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; अपि (api) - even; यत्तानाम् (yattānām) - of those who are striving/engaged; पृतनासु (pṛtanāsu) - in battles; न (na) - not; बिभ्यति (bibhyati) - they fear;]
(Whom having resorted to mighty-armed, the Pāñcālas and likewise the Kurus, even of the gods (among those) who are striving in battles, do not fear.)
Having resorted to that mighty-armed one, the Pāñcālas and likewise the Kurus do not fear, even in battles among the striving gods. (03-79-20)
यस्य बाहू समाश्रित्य वयं सर्वे महात्मनः। मन्यामहे जितानाजौ परान्प्राप्तां च मेदिनीम् ॥०३-७९-२१॥
yasya bāhū samāśritya vayaṃ sarve mahātmanaḥ। manyāmahe jitān ājau parān prāptāṃ ca medinīm॥03-79-21॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - having taken refuge in; वयम् (vayaṃ) - we; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; मन्यामहे (manyāmahe) - we think; जितान् (jitān) - conquered; आजौ (ājau) - in battle; परान् (parān) - enemies; प्राप्ताम् (prāptām) - attained; च (ca) - and; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - earth;]
(Whose arms having taken refuge in, we all of the great-souled one think conquered in battle the enemies, and attained the earth.)
By taking refuge in the arms of that great-souled one, we all believe that we have conquered our enemies in battle and gained the earth. (03-79-21)
तमृते फल्गुनं वीरं न लभे काम्यके धृतिम्। शून्यामिव च पश्यामि तत्र तत्र महीमिमाम् ॥०३-७९-२२॥
tam ṛte phalgunaṃ vīraṃ na labhe kāmyake dhṛtim। śūnyām iva ca paśyāmi tatra tatra mahīm imām॥03-79-22॥
[तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - without; फल्गुनं (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; न (na) - not; लभे (labhe) - I obtain; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kamyaka (forest); धृतिम् (dhṛtim) - steadiness; शून्याम् (śūnyām) - void; इव (iva) - as if; च (ca) - and; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(Without him, Phalguna the hero, I do not obtain steadiness in Kamyaka; and I see this earth here and there as if void.)
Without him, Arjuna the hero, I find no composure in Kamyaka; and I see this very earth everywhere as if empty. (03-79-22)

य उदीचीं दिशं गत्वा जित्वा युधि महाबलान्। गन्धर्वमुख्याञ्शतशो हयाँल्लेभे स वासविः ॥०३-७९-२३॥
ya udīcīṃ diśaṃ gatvā jitvā yudhi mahābalān। gandharvamukhyāñśataśo hayaṃllebhe sa vāsaviḥ॥03-79-23॥
[य (ya) - who; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) - northern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; महाबलान् (mahābalān) - the greatly powerful; गन्धर्वमुख्यान् (gandharvamukhyān) - chiefs of Gandharvas; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; हयान् (hayān) - horses; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; स (sa) - he; वासविः (vāsaviḥ) - the son of Vasava;]
(He, having gone to the northern direction, having conquered in battle the greatly powerful, chiefs of Gandharvas by hundreds of horses, obtained, that son of Vasava.)
He, having gone to the northern direction and having conquered in battle the greatly powerful chiefs of the Gandharvas, obtained hundreds of horses; that (was) the son of Vasava (Arjuna). (03-79-23)
राजंस्तित्तिरिकल्माषाञ्श्रीमाननिलरंहसः। प्रादाद्भ्रात्रे प्रियः प्रेम्णा राजसूये महाक्रतौ ॥०३-७९-२४॥
rājaṁs tittiri-kalmāṣāñ śrīmān anila-raṁhasaḥ। prādād bhrātre priyaḥ premṇā rājasūye mahākratau॥03-79-24॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O King; तित्तिरि-कर्माषान् (tittiri-kalmāṣān) - spotted quails; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - fortunate; अनिल-रंहसः (anila-raṁhasaḥ) - son of Anila (Wind); प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; भ्रात्रे (bhrātre) - to (his) brother; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - beloved; प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - out of love; राजसूये (rājasūye) - at the rājasūya (royal sacrifice); महाक्रतौ (mahākratau) - in the great sacrifice;]
(O King, the illustrious son of Anila, out of love, gave the spotted quails to his brother at the rājasūya, the great sacrifice.)
O King, the fortunate son of Anila affectionately gave the spotted quails to his brother during the great rājasūya sacrifice. (03-79-24)
तमृते भीमधन्वानं भीमादवरजं वने। कामये काम्यके वासं नेदानीममरोपमम् ॥०३-७९-२५॥
tamṛte bhīmadhanvānaṃ bhīmādavarajaṃ vane। kāmaye kāmyake vāsaṃ nedānīmamaro-pamam ॥03-79-25॥
[तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - except; भीमधन्वानम् (bhīmadhanvānam) - Bhīmasena archer; भीमात् (bhīmāt) - than Bhīma; अवरजम् (avarajam) - younger brother; वने (vane) - in the forest; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; काम्यके (kāmyake) - at Kāmyaka; वासम् (vāsam) - residence; न (na) - not; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; अमरोपमम् (amaro-pamam) - like the gods;]
(Him except, Bhīmasena archer, than Bhīma younger brother, in the forest, I desire at Kāmyaka residence, not now like the gods.)
Except for him, Bhīmasena, the younger brother of Bhīma, I do not now desire residence in Kāmyaka or even one like that of the gods. (03-79-25)

यो धनानि च कन्याश्च युधि जित्वा महारथान्। आजहार पुरा राज्ञे राजसूये महाक्रतौ ॥०३-७९-२६॥
yo dhanāni ca kanyāś ca yudhi jitvā mahārathān। ājahāra purā rājñe rājasūye mahākratau॥03-79-26॥
[यो (yo) - he who; धनानि (dhanāni) - riches; च (ca) - and; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; च (ca) - and; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great warriors; आजहार (ājahāra) - he brought; पुरा (purā) - formerly; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; राजसूये (rājasūye) - at the rājasūya (royal sacrifice); महाक्रतौ (mahākratau) - at the great sacrifice;]
(He who riches and maidens and in battle having conquered great warriors, he brought formerly to the king at the rājasūya, at the great sacrifice.)
He who, having conquered great warriors in battle, formerly brought riches and maidens to the king at the rājasūya, the great sacrifice. (03-79-26)
यः समेतान्मृधे जित्वा यादवानमितद्युतिः। सुभद्रामाजहारैको वासुदेवस्य संमते ॥०३-७९-२७॥
yaḥ sametān mṛdhe jitvā yādavān amitadyutiḥ. subhadrām ājahāraikaḥ vāsudevasya saṃmate ॥03-79-27॥
[यः (yaḥ) - he who; समेतान् (sametān) - assembled (ones); मृधे (mṛdhe) - in battle; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; यादवान् (yādavān) - the Yādavas; अमितद्युतिः (amitadyutiḥ) - of immeasurable splendor; सुभद्राम् (subhadrām) - Subhadrā; आजहारेकः (ājahāraikaḥ) - brought away alone; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; संमते (saṃmate) - with the consent;]
(He who, having conquered the assembled Yādavas in battle, of immeasurable splendor, brought away Subhadrā alone with the consent of Vāsudeva.)
He who, after defeating the assembled Yādavas in battle, and endowed with immeasurable splendor, alone carried away Subhadrā with the approval of Vāsudeva. (03-79-27)
तस्य जिष्णोर्बृसीं दृष्ट्वा शून्यामुपनिवेशने। हृदयं मे महाराज न शाम्यति कदाचन ॥०३-७९-२८॥
tasya jiṣṇor bṛsīṃ dṛṣṭvā śūnyām upaniveśane। hṛdayaṃ me mahārāja na śāmyati kadācana॥03-79-28॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; जिष्णोः (jiṣṇoḥ) - of the victorious one; बृसीं (bṛsīṃ) - bow-rest; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शून्याम् (śūnyām) - empty; उपनिवेशने (upaniveśane) - at the resting place; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; मे (me) - my; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) - not; शाम्यति (śāmyati) - is calmed; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(Of him, of the victorious one, the bow-rest having seen empty at the resting-place, my heart, O great king, is not calmed ever.)
O great king, seeing the bow-rest of the victorious one lying empty at the resting place, my heart is never at peace. (03-79-28)
वनादस्माद्विवासं तु रोचयेऽहमरिंदम। न हि नस्तमृते वीरं रमणीयमिदं वनम् ॥०३-७९-२९॥
vanādasmādvivāsaṁ tu rocaye'hamariṁdama। na hi nastamṛte vīraṁ ramaṇīyamidaṁ vanam ॥03-79-29॥
[वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; अस्मात् (asmāt) - this; विवासम् (vivāsam) - removal, exile; तु (tu) - but; रोचये (rocaye) - I find pleasing; अहम् (aham) - I; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ऋते (ṛte) - except; वीरम् (vīram) - O hero; रमणीयम् (ramaṇīyam) - pleasant; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(But removal from this forest I find pleasing, O subduer of foes. Indeed, for us, except you, O hero, this forest is not pleasant.)
But, O subduer of foes, leaving this forest is pleasing to me. Indeed, O hero, except for you, this forest is not pleasant for us. (03-79-29)
