धनञ्जयोत्सुकास्ते तु वने तस्मिन्महारथाः। न्यवसन्त महाभागा द्रौपद्या सह पाण्डवाः ॥०३-८०-१॥
dhanañjayotsukās te tu vane tasmin mahārathāḥ। nyavasanta mahābhāgā draupadyā saha pāṇḍavāḥ॥03-80-1॥
[धनञ्जयोत्सुकाः (dhanañjayotsukāḥ) - eager for Dhanañjaya; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; न्यवसन्त (nyavasanta) - dwelt; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - highly fortunate ones; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - with Draupadī; सह (saha) - together; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas;]
(Eager for Dhanañjaya, they but in that forest the great chariot-warriors dwelt highly fortunate with Draupadī together Pāṇḍavas.)
But those highly fortunate great chariot-warriors, the Pāṇḍavas, who were eager for Dhanañjaya, dwelt together with Draupadī in that forest. (03-80-1)
अथापश्यन्महात्मानं देवर्षिं तत्र नारदम्। दीप्यमानं श्रिया ब्राह्म्या दीप्ताग्निसमतेजसम् ॥०३-८०-२॥
athāpaśyanmahātmānaṃ devarṣiṃ tatra nāradam। dīpyamānaṃ śriyā brāhmyā dīptāgnisamatejasam॥03-80-2॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled; देवर्षिम् (devarṣim) - divine sage; तत्र (tatra) - there; नारदम् (nāradam) - Nārada; दीप्यमानम् (dīpyamānam) - shining; श्रिया (śriyā) - with glory; ब्राह्म्या (brāhmyā) - divine (of Brahmā); दीप्त-अग्नि-सम-तेजसम् (dīpta-agni-sama-tejasam) - having brilliance equal to blazing fire;]
(Then he saw the great-souled divine sage Nārada there, shining with Brahmic glory, possessing brilliance equal to blazing fire.)
Then he saw there the great sage Nārada, a divine rishi, radiant with Brahmic splendor and possessing brilliance equal to blazing fire. (03-80-2)
स तैः परिवृतः श्रीमान्भ्रातृभिः कुरुसत्तमः। विबभावतिदीप्तौजा देवैरिव शतक्रतुः ॥०३-८०-३॥
sa taiḥ parivṛtaḥ śrīmān bhrātṛbhiḥ kurusattamaḥ। vibhāvati dīptaujā devair iva śatakratuḥ॥03-80-3॥
[स (sa) - he; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; कुरुसत्तमः (kurusattamaḥ) - the best of the Kurus; विबभावति (vibhāvati) - brilliant; दीप्तौजा (dīptaujā) - of blazing energy; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; इव (iva) - like; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra (having a hundred sacrifices);]
(He, by those surrounded, glorious, by brothers, the best of the Kurus, brilliant, of blazing energy, by the gods, like Indra.)
Surrounded by his brothers, the glorious best of the Kurus shone with blazing energy like Indra among the gods. (03-80-3)
यथा च वेदान्सावित्री याज्ञसेनी तथा सती। न जहौ धर्मतः पार्थान्मेरुमर्कप्रभा यथा ॥०३-८०-४॥
yathā ca vedāṁsāvitrī yājñasenī tathā satī। na jahau dharmataḥ pārthān merumarkaprabhā yathā॥03-80-4॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; वेदन् (vedān) - Vedas (sacred texts); सावित्री (sāvitrī) - Savitri (the goddess); याज्ञसेनी (yājñasenī) - Yajñasenī (Draupadī); तथा (tathā) - in the same way; सती (satī) - the virtuous (she); न (na) - not; जहौ (jahau) - abandoned; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - in accordance with dharma; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas); मेरु (meru) - Meru (the mountain); अर्कप्रभा (arkaprabhā) - the splendor of the Sun; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Just as Savitri (the goddess) did not abandon the Vedas, so too did the virtuous Yajñasenī not abandon the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas) in accordance with dharma, just as the splendor of the Sun does not leave Meru.)
Just as Savitri did not forsake the Vedas, so too the virtuous Yajñasenī (Draupadī) did not abandon the Pāṇḍavas, in the way that the Sun's radiance never leaves Mount Meru. (03-80-4)
प्रतिगृह्य तु तां पूजां नारदो भगवानृषिः। आश्वासयद्धर्मसुतं युक्तरूपमिवानघ ॥०३-८०-५॥
pratigṛhya tu tāṃ pūjāṃ nārado bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। āśvāsayad dharmasutaṃ yuktarūpam ivānagha ॥03-80-5॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - that; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - honor; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; भगवान् (bhagavān) - revered; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; आश्वासयत् (āśvāsayat) - consoled; धर्मसुतं (dharmasutaṃ) - son of Dharma; युक्तरूपम् (yuktarūpam) - fitting form; इव (iva) - like; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Having accepted but that honor, Nārada, the revered sage, consoled the son of Dharma, like a fitting form, O sinless one.)
But after accepting that honor, the revered sage Nārada consoled the son of Dharma in a fitting manner, O sinless one. (03-80-5)
उवाच च महात्मानं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। ब्रूहि धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठ केनार्थः किं ददामि ते ॥०३-८०-६॥

(And said to the great-souled king of dharma, Yudhisthira, "Tell (me), O best of the upholders of dharma, for what purpose, what shall I give to you?" (03-80-6))
He said to the great-souled Dharmaraja Yudhisthira, "Tell me, O best of the upholders of dharma, for what purpose, what shall I give to you?" (03-80-6)
अथ धर्मसुतो राजा प्रणम्य भ्रातृभिः सह। उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं नारदं देवसंमितम् ॥०३-८०-७॥
atha dharmasuto rājā praṇamya bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। uvāca prāñjalir vākyaṃ nāradaṃ devasaṃmitam॥03-80-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - Dharmasuta (son of Dharma; Yudhiṣṭhira); राजा (rājā) - king; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having saluted; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; उवाच (uvāca) - said; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; नारदम् (nāradam) - to Nārada; देवसंमितम् (devasaṃmitam) - equal to a god;]
(Then Dharmasuta, the king, having saluted together with (his) brothers, said with folded hands speech to Nārada, who is equal to a god.)
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma, together with his brothers, saluted and, with folded hands, spoke to Nārada, who was equal to a god. (03-80-7)
त्वयि तुष्टे महाभाग सर्वलोकाभिपूजिते। कृतमित्येव मन्येऽहं प्रसादात्तव सुव्रत ॥०३-८०-८॥
tvayi tuṣṭe mahābhāga sarvalokābhipūjite। kṛtamityeva manye'haṃ prasādāttava suvrata॥03-80-8॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; तुष्टे (tuṣṭe) - (when you are) satisfied; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; सर्वलोकाभिपूजिते (sarvalokābhipūjite) - honored by all worlds; कृतम् (kṛtam) - accomplished; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; मन् ये (manye) - I consider; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by (your) grace; तव (tava) - your; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O virtuous (one);]
(In you satisfied, O greatly fortunate, honored by all worlds, accomplished, thus indeed I consider, I, by grace your, O virtuous one.)
When you are satisfied, O greatly fortunate one, honored by all worlds, I indeed consider everything accomplished by your grace, O virtuous one. (03-80-8)
यदि त्वहमनुग्राह्यो भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽनघ। संदेहं मे मुनिश्रेष्ठ हृदिस्थं छेत्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-८०-९॥
yadi tv aham anugrāhyaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ anagha। saṃdehaṃ me muniśreṣṭha hṛdisthaṃ chettum arhasi॥03-80-9॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; त्व (tv) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुग्राह्यः (anugrāhyaḥ) - worthy of favor; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; सन्देहं (saṃdehaṃ) - doubt; मे (me) - my; मुनिश्रेष्ठ (muniśreṣṭha) - O best among sages; हृदिस्थं (hṛdisthaṃ) - situated in (my) heart; छेत्तुम् (chettum) - to cut; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(If by you I worthy of favor, together with (my) brothers, O sinless one, the doubt of mine, O best among sages, situated in (my) heart, to cut (it) you are worthy.)
If I, along with my brothers, am worthy of your favor, O sinless one, then you, O best among sages, should dispel the doubt that rests in my heart. (3-80-9)
प्रदक्षिणं यः कुरुते पृथिवीं तीर्थतत्परः। किं फलं तस्य कार्त्स्न्येन तद्ब्रह्मन्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-८०-१०॥
pradakṣiṇaṃ yaḥ kurute pṛthivīṃ tīrthatatparaḥ। kiṃ phalaṃ tasya kārtsnyena tad brahman vaktum arhasi॥03-80-10॥
[प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; यः (yaḥ) - who; कुरुते (kurute) - does; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth; तीर्थतत्परः (tīrthatatparaḥ) - intent on holy places; किं (kiṃ) - what; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; तस्य (tasya) - his; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Circumambulation who does earth, intent on holy places; what fruit his in entirety that, O Brahman, to say you ought.)
O Brahman, you ought to say what is the complete fruit for one who, intent on holy places, circumambulates the earth. (03-80-10)

Nārada said.
शृणु राजन्नवहितो यथा भीष्मेण भारत। पुलस्त्यस्य सकाशाद्वै सर्वमेतदुपश्रुतम् ॥०३-८०-११॥
śṛṇu rājann avahito yathā bhīṣmeṇa bhārata। pulastyasya sakāśād vai sarvam etad upaśrutam ॥03-80-11॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अवहितः (avahitaḥ) - attentively; with concentration; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; पुलस्त्यस्य (pulastyasya) - of Pulastya; सकाशात् (sakāśāt) - from the presence; from (him); वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etad) - this; उपश्रुतम् (upaśrutam) - was heard; was listened to;]
(Hear, O king, attentively, as by Bhīṣma, O descendant of Bharata; indeed, all this was heard from Pulastya.)
O king, listen attentively, just as Bhīṣma did, O descendant of Bharata. All of this was indeed heard from Pulastya. (03-80-11)
पुरा भागीरथीतीरे भीष्मो धर्मभृतां वरः। पित्र्यं व्रतं समास्थाय न्यवसन्मुनिवत्तदा ॥०३-८०-१२॥
purā bhāgīrathītīre bhīṣmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। pitryaṃ vrataṃ samāsthāya nyavasanmunivattadā ॥03-80-12॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; previously; भागीरथी-तीरे (bhāgīrathī-tīre) - on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganga) river; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; धर्म-भृताम् (dharma-bhṛtām) - of those who uphold dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; distinguished; पित्र्यम् (pitryam) - pertaining to the ancestors; ancestral; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having undertaken; assuming; न्यवसत् (nyavasat) - he dwelt; मुनिवत् (munivat) - like a sage; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Formerly, on the bank of the Bhagirathi, Bhishma, the best of those who uphold dharma, having undertaken the ancestral vow, dwelt like a sage at that time.)
Once, Bhishma, the foremost among upholders of dharma, having undertaken his ancestral vow, dwelt like a sage on the bank of the Bhagirathi. (03-80-12)
शुभे देशे महाराज पुण्ये देवर्षिसेविते। गङ्गाद्वारे महातेजा देवगन्धर्वसेविते ॥०३-८०-१३॥
śubhe deśe mahārāja puṇye devarṣisevite। gaṅgādvāre mahātejā devagandharvasevite ॥03-80-13॥
[शुभे (śubhe) - auspicious; देशे (deśe) - in the place; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पुण्ये (puṇye) - holy; देवर्षिसेविते (devarṣisevite) - attended by divine sages; गङ्गाद्वारे (gaṅgādvāre) - at Gaṅgādvāra (the gateway of Gaṅgā); महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; देवगन्धर्वसेविते (devagandharvasevite) - attended by gods and Gandharvas;]
(In the auspicious place, O great king, the holy, attended by divine sages; at Gaṅgādvāra, of great brilliance, attended by gods and Gandharvas.)
O great king, in that auspicious and holy place, attended by divine sages—at Gaṅgādvāra, resplendent, attended by gods and Gandharvas. (03-80-13)
स पितॄंस्तर्पयामास देवांश्च परमद्युतिः। ऋषींश्च तोषयामास विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥०३-८०-१४॥
sa pitṝṁs tarpayāmāsa devāṁś ca paramadyutiḥ। ṛṣīṁś ca toṣayāmāsa vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥03-80-14॥
[स (sa) - he; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - forefathers; तर्पयामास (tarpayāmāsa) - satisfied; (made offerings to;) देवान् (devān) - gods; च (ca) - and; परमद्युतिः (paramadyutiḥ) - the exceedingly illustrious one; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; च (ca) - and; तोषयामास (toṣayāmāsa) - pleased; (gratified;) विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - in accordance with prescribed rules; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act;]
(He forefathers satisfied, gods and, the exceedingly illustrious one; sages and pleased, in accordance with prescribed rules by the act.)
He, the exceedingly illustrious one, satisfied the forefathers and the gods, and also pleased the sages by acts performed according to the prescribed rules. (03-80-14)
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य जपन्नेव महातपाः। ददर्शाद्भुतसङ्काशं पुलस्त्यमृषिसत्तमम् ॥०३-८०-१५॥
kasyacit tv atha kālasya japann eva mahātapāḥ। dadarśādbhutasankāśaṃ pulastyam ṛṣisattamam॥03-80-15॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of a certain (one); तुवथ (tu atha) - then; indeed; कालस्य (kālasya) - of (a) time; जपन् (japan) - reciting (mantra); एव (eva) - indeed; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; अद्भुतसङ्काशम् (adbhutasankāśam) - wonderfully radiant in appearance; पुलस्त्यम् (pulastyam) - Pulastya (proper noun); ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - the foremost among sages;]
(Of a certain time, then indeed, reciting (mantra), the great ascetic saw wonderfully radiant in appearance Pulastya, the foremost among sages.)
Then, at a certain time, as he was reciting mantras, the great ascetic saw Pulastya, the illustrious and foremost of sages, radiant in his wondrous appearance. (03-80-15)
स तं दृष्ट्वोग्रतपसं दीप्यमानमिव श्रिया। प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे विस्मयं च परं ययौ ॥०३-८०-१६॥
sa taṁ dṛṣṭvogra-tapasaṁ dīpyamānam iva śriyā। praharṣam atulaṁ lebhe vismayaṁ ca paraṁ yayau ॥03-80-16॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; उग्रतपसं (ugra-tapasaṁ) - of fierce austerity; दीप्यमानम् (dīpyamānam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendor; प्रहर्षम् (praharṣam) - joy; अतुलम् (atulaṁ) - incomparable; लेभे (lebhe) - he obtained; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; च (ca) - and; परम् (param) - supreme; ययौ (yayau) - he went (attained);]
(He, having seen him of fierce austerity, shining like with splendor, incomparable joy he obtained, and supreme wonder he went (attained).)
He saw him, possessing fierce austerity and shining with splendor, and experienced incomparable joy and supreme wonder. (03-80-16)
उपस्थितं महाराज पूजयामास भारत। भीष्मो धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥०३-८०-१७॥
upasthitaṁ mahārāja pūjayāmāsa bhārata। bhīṣmo dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭho vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥03-80-17॥
[उपस्थितं (upasthitam) - present; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of upholders of dharma; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - by what is prescribed by rule; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act;]
(Present O great king, honored O descendant of Bharata, Bhishma, of upholders of dharma the foremost, by what is prescribed by rule, by the act.)
O great king, Bhishma, the foremost of the upholders of dharma, honored the one present, O Bharata, by the act prescribed by rule. (03-80-17)
शिरसा चार्घ्यमादाय शुचिः प्रयतमानसः। नाम सङ्कीर्तयामास तस्मिन्ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमे ॥०३-८०-१८॥
śirasā cārghyam ādāya śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ। nāma saṅkīrtayāmāsa tasmin brahmarṣisattame॥03-80-18॥
[शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; च (ca) - and; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - honorary offering; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with controlled mind; नाम (nāma) - the name; सङ्कीर्तयामास (saṅkīrtayāmāsa) - he praised; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमे (brahmarṣisattame) - most eminent among Brahmarṣis;]
(With the head and having taken the arghya (honorary offering), pure, with controlled mind, he praised the name in that most eminent among Brahmarṣis.)
With his head bowed, having taken the arghya offering, pure and with a concentrated mind, he praised the name of that most exalted among Brahmarṣis. (03-80-18)
भीष्मोऽहमस्मि भद्रं ते दासोऽस्मि तव सुव्रत। तव संदर्शनादेव मुक्तोऽहं सर्वकिल्बिषैः ॥०३-८०-१९॥
bhīṣmo 'ham asmi bhadraṃ te dāso 'smi tava suvrata. tava saṃdarśanād eva mukto 'haṃ sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ ॥03-80-19॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; दासः (dāsaḥ) - servant; अस्मि (asmi) - am; तव (tava) - your; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O well-vowed one; तव (tava) - your; संदर्शनात् (saṃdarśanāt) - from (your) sight; एव (eva) - indeed; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; अहम् (aham) - I; सर्वकिल्बिषैः (sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ) - from all sins;]
(Bhīṣma I am, good fortune to you. Servant I am your, O well-vowed one. By your sight indeed I am freed from all sins.)
I am Bhīṣma—good fortune to you. I am your servant, O highly virtuous one. By merely seeing you, I have become free from all sins. (03-80-19)
एवमुक्त्वा महाराज भीष्मो धर्मभृतां वरः। वाग्यतः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा तूष्णीमासीद्युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-८०-२०॥
evam uktvā mahārāja bhīṣmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। vāg yataḥ prāñjalir bhūtvā tūṣṇīm āsīd yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-80-20॥

यस्येदृशस्ते धर्मोऽयं पितृभक्त्याश्रितोऽनघ। तेन पश्यसि मां पुत्र प्रीतिश्चापि मम त्वयि ॥०३-८०-२३॥

(Of whom such as this your dharma this by devotion to father is supported, O sinless one; by that you see me, son, and affection also of me in you.)
O sinless one, yours is a dharma such as this, supported by filial devotion; by that you see me, son, and my affection is also in you. (03-80-23)
अमोघदर्शी भीष्माहं ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते। यद्वक्ष्यसि कुरुश्रेष्ठ तस्य दातास्मि तेऽनघ ॥०३-८०-२४॥

(Infallible-seer Bhīṣma, I speak, what shall I do for you? What you will say, O best of the Kurus, of that I am the giver to you, O sinless one (03-80-24))
O Bhīṣma, who possesses infallible insight, tell me, what shall I do for you? Whatever you say, O best of the Kurus, I will grant you that, O sinless one. (03-80-24)

(Being pleased in you, O greatly fortunate one, honored by all worlds, accomplished thus indeed I think, I that I have seen the Lord.)
As you are pleased, O greatly fortunate one, honored by all worlds, I consider that my purpose is fulfilled, for I have seen the Lord. (03-80-25)
यदि त्वहमनुग्राह्यस्तव धर्मभृतां वर। वक्ष्यामि हृत्स्थं संदेहं तन्मे त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-८०-२६॥
yadi tv aham anugrāhyas tava dharmabhṛtāṃ vara। vakṣyāmi hṛtsthaṃ saṃdehaṃ tan me tvaṃ vaktum arhasi॥03-80-26॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; त्व (tv) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुग्राह्यः (anugrāhyaḥ) - worthy of favor; तव (tava) - to you; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtāṃ) - of upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - O best; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; हृत्स्थं (hṛtsthaṃ) - situated in (my) heart; संदेहं (saṃdehaṃ) - doubt; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - my; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(If by you I am worthy of favor, to you O best of upholders of dharma, I shall speak (the) doubt situated in (my) heart; that my, you to speak are worthy.)
If I am worthy of your favor, O best of the upholders of dharma, I shall express the doubt that is in my heart; you should explain that to me. (03-80-26)
अस्ति मे भगवन्कश्चित्तीर्थेभ्यो धर्मसंशयः। तमहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि पृथक्सङ्कीर्तितं त्वया ॥०३-८०-२७॥
asti me bhagavan kaścit tīrthebhyaḥ dharma-saṁśayaḥ। tam ahaṁ śrotum icchāmi pṛthak-saṅkīrtitaṁ tvayā ॥03-80-27॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; मे (me) - for me; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; कश्चित् (kaścit) - a certain; तीर्थेभ्यः (tīrthebhyaḥ) - regarding the sacred places; धर्मसंशयः (dharma-saṁśayaḥ) - doubt about dharma; तम् (tam) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; सङ्कीर्तितम् (saṅkīrtitam) - described; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(There is, for me, O revered one, a certain doubt about dharma regarding the sacred places. That I wish to hear described separately by you.)
O revered one, I have a particular doubt concerning dharma in relation to the sacred places. I wish to hear that doubt, as separately described by you. (3-80-27)
प्रदक्षिणं यः पृथिवीं करोत्यमितविक्रम। किं फलं तस्य विप्रर्षे तन्मे ब्रूहि तपोधन ॥०३-८०-२८॥
pradakṣiṇaṃ yaḥ pṛthivīṃ karoty amitavikrama। kiṃ phalaṃ tasya viprarṣe tan me brūhi tapodhana ॥03-80-28॥
[प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; यः (yaḥ) - who; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - the earth; करोति (karoti) - performs; अमितविक्रम (amitavikrama) - O one of boundless valor; किं (kiṃ) - what; फलं (phalam) - fruit; तस्य (tasya) - of that; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among brāhmaṇas; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O wealth of austerity;]
(Circumambulation who the earth performs, O one of boundless valor, what fruit of that, O sage among brāhmaṇas, that to me tell, O wealth of austerity.)
O one of boundless valor, whoever performs circumambulation of the earth, O sage among brāhmaṇas, what is the fruit of that? O wealth of austerity, tell that to me. (03-80-28)

hanta te'haṃ pravakṣyāmi yad ṛṣīṇāṃ parāyaṇam। tad ekāgramanās tāt śṛṇu tīrtheṣu yat phalam ॥03-80-29॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - will declare; यत् (yat) - which; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the ṛṣis; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - chief end; तत् (tat) - that; एकाग्रमना (ekāgramanā) - with focused mind; तात (tāta) - dear one; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in holy places; यत् (yat) - which; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(Indeed, to you I will declare which is the chief end of the ṛṣis. That, with focused mind, dear one, listen in holy places to which fruit.)
Indeed, I will tell you, dear one, what is regarded as the supreme goal by the ṛṣis. Listen with focused mind to what fruit is obtained in holy places. (03-80-29)
यस्य हस्तौ च पादौ च मनश्चैव सुसंयतम्। विद्या तपश्च कीर्तिश्च स तीर्थफलमश्नुते ॥०३-८०-३०॥
yasya hastau ca pādau ca manaścaiva susaṃyatam। vidyā tapaśca kīrtiśca sa tīrthaphalamaśnute ॥03-80-30॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; हस्तौ (hastau) - hands (dual); च (ca) - and; पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); च (ca) - and; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुसंयतम् (susaṃyatam) - well-restrained; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; तीर्थफलम् (tīrthaphalam) - the fruit of pilgrimage; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(Of whom hands and feet and mind indeed are well-restrained; knowledge, austerity and fame and he attains the fruit of pilgrimage.)
He whose hands, feet, and mind are well controlled, who possesses knowledge, austerity, and fame, attains the fruit of pilgrimage. (03-80-30)
प्रतिग्रहादुपावृत्तः सन्तुष्टो नियतः शुचिः। अहङ्कारनिवृत्तश्च स तीर्थफलमश्नुते ॥०३-८०-३१॥
pratigrahād upāvṛttaḥ santuṣṭo niyataḥ śuciḥ। ahaṅkāra-nivṛttaś ca sa tīrtha-phalam aśnute॥03-80-31॥
[प्रतिग्रहात् (pratigrahāt) - from receiving gifts; उपावृत्तः (upāvṛttaḥ) - turned away; सन्तुष्टः (santuṣṭaḥ) - content; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; अहङ्कार-निवृत्तः (ahaṅkāra-nivṛttaḥ) - devoid of ego; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; तीर्थ-फलम् (tīrtha-phalam) - the fruit of pilgrimage; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(He who has turned away from receiving gifts, who is content, self-controlled, pure, and devoid of ego, he attains the fruit of pilgrimage.)
He who has renounced receiving gifts, is content, self-disciplined, pure, and free from ego, he attains the fruit of visiting sacred places. (03-80-31)
अकल्कको निरारम्भो लघ्वाहारो जितेन्द्रियः। विमुक्तः सर्वदोषैर्यः स तीर्थफलमश्नुते ॥०३-८०-३२॥
akalkako nirārambho laghvāhāro jitendriyaḥ। vimuktaḥ sarvadoṣair yaḥ sa tīrthaphalam aśnute॥03-80-32॥
[अकल्ककः (akalkakaḥ) - one free from impurity; निरारम्भः (nirārambhaḥ) - without undertaking (new works); लघ्वाहारः (laghvāhāraḥ) - who eats lightly; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - having conquered the senses; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - liberated; सर्वदोषैः (sarva-doṣaiḥ) - from all faults; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; तीर्थफलम् (tīrtha-phalam) - the fruit of visiting a holy place; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains;]
(One free from impurity, without undertaking (new works), who eats lightly, having conquered the senses, liberated from all faults—he obtains the fruit of visiting a holy place.)
He who is free from impurity, without undertaking new works, eats lightly, has conquered his senses, and is liberated from all faults, attains the fruit of visiting a holy place. (03-80-32)
अक्रोधनश्च राजेन्द्र सत्यशीलो दृढव्रतः। आत्मोपमश्च भूतेषु स तीर्थफलमश्नुते ॥०३-८०-३३॥
akrodhanaś ca rājendra satyaśīlo dṛḍhavrataḥ। ātmopamaś ca bhūteṣu sa tīrthaphalamaśnute ॥03-80-33॥
[अक्रोधनः (akrodhanaḥ) - one who is free from anger; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सत्यशीलः (satyaśīlaḥ) - of truthful conduct; दृढव्रतः (dṛḍhavrataḥ) - firm in vow; आत्मोपमः (ātmopamaḥ) - regarding others as oneself; च (ca) - and; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - among all beings; सः (saḥ) - he; तीर्थफलम् (tīrthaphalam) - the fruit of visiting holy places; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(One who is free from anger, and O king, of truthful conduct, firm in vow, regarding others as oneself, and among all beings, he attains the fruit of visiting holy places.)
O king, one who is free from anger, truthful in conduct, firm in vow, and considers all beings as himself, attains the fruits of pilgrimage. (03-80-33)
ऋषिभिः क्रतवः प्रोक्ता वेदेष्विह यथाक्रमम्। फलं चैव यथातत्त्वं प्रेत्य चेह च सर्वशः ॥०३-८०-३४॥
ṛṣibhiḥ kratavaḥ proktā vedeṣv-iha yathākramaṃ। phalaṃ caiva yathā-tattvaṃ pretya ca iha ca sarvaśaḥ॥03-80-34॥
[ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrificial rites; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - declared; वेदेषु (vedeṣu) - in the Vedas; इह (iha) - here; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramaṃ) - according to proper order; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यथातत्त्वम् (yathā-tattvam) - according to the true nature; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(By the sages, sacrificial rites are declared in the Vedas here according to proper order; the fruit also indeed, according to the true nature, after death and here and entirely.)
The sages have described, in the Vedas, the sacrificial rites here according to proper order; and have also explained, in their true essence, the results both after death and here, in every respect. (03-80-34)
न ते शक्या दरिद्रेण यज्ञाः प्राप्तुं महीपते। बहूपकरणा यज्ञा नानासम्भारविस्तराः ॥०३-८०-३५॥
na te śakyā daridreṇa yajñāḥ prāptuṃ mahīpate। bahūpakaraṇā yajñā nānā-sambhāra-vistarāḥ॥03-80-35॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - by you; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; दरिद्रेण (daridreṇa) - by the poor; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; प्राप्तुं (prāptuṃ) - to be obtained; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; बहूपकरणा (bahūpakaraṇā) - having many implements; यज्ञा (yajñā) - sacrifices; नानासम्भारविस्तराः (nānā-sambhāra-vistarāḥ) - elaborate with various materials;]
(Not by you possible by the poor sacrifices to be obtained, O king. Having many implements sacrifices elaborate with various materials.)
O king, sacrifices cannot be performed by the poor; sacrifices, having many implements and being elaborate with various materials, are not attainable by the destitute. (03-80-35)
प्राप्यन्ते पार्थिवैरेते समृद्धैर्वा नरैः क्वचित्। नार्थन्यूनोपकरणैरेकात्मभिरसंहतैः ॥०३-८०-३६॥
prāpyante pārthivair ete samṛddhair vā naraiḥ kvacit। nārthanyūnopakaraṇair ekātmabhir asaṃhataiḥ ॥03-80-36॥
[प्राप्यन्ते (prāpyante) - are obtained; पार्थिवैः (pārthivaiḥ) - by kings; एते (ete) - these; समृद्धैः (samṛddhaiḥ) - by prosperous; वा (vā) - or; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; क्वचित् (kvacit) - sometimes; न (na) - not; अर्थन्यूनोपकरणैः (arthanyūnopakaraṇaiḥ) - with lacking-in-wealth means; एकात्मभिः (ekātmabhiḥ) - with united; असंहतैः (asaṃhataiḥ) - disunited;]
(These are obtained by kings or by prosperous men sometimes. Not with lacking-in-wealth means, with united (but) disunited (ones).)
Such things are sometimes attained by kings or wealthy men, but not by those who are poor in means or whose resources, though united, lack cohesion. (03-80-36)
यो दरिद्रैरपि विधिः शक्यः प्राप्तुं नरेश्वर। तुल्यो यज्ञफलैः पुण्यैस्तं निबोध युधां वर ॥०३-८०-३७॥
yo daridrair api vidhiḥ śakyaḥ prāptuṃ nareśvara। tulyo yajñaphalaiḥ puṇyaiḥ taṃ nibodha yudhāṃ vara ॥03-80-37॥
[यो (yaḥ) - which; दरिद्रैः (daridraiḥ) - by the poor; अपि (api) - even; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - procedure; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; प्राप्तुं (prāptum) - to attain; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O king; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; यज्ञफलैः (yajñaphalaiḥ) - with the fruits of sacrifice; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - with meritorious deeds; तम् (tam) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - know; युधां वर (yudhāṃ vara) - O best of warriors;]
(Which by even the poor procedure possible to attain, O king; equal with the fruits of sacrifice with meritorious deeds, that know, O best of warriors.)
O king, know that procedure which even the poor can attain, which is equal to the fruits of sacrifice and meritorious deeds, O best of warriors. (03-80-37)
ऋषीणां परमं गुह्यमिदं भरतसत्तम। तीर्थाभिगमनं पुण्यं यज्ञैरपि विशिष्यते ॥०३-८०-३८॥
ṛṣīṇāṃ paramaṃ guhyaṃ idaṃ bharatasattama। tīrthābhigamanaṃ puṇyaṃ yajñair api viśiṣyate ॥03-80-38॥
[ऋषीणां (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; परमं (paramam) - supreme; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - secret; इदम् (idam) - this; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; तीर्थाभिगमनम् (tīrthābhigamanam) - approaching the sacred places; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - meritorious; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - than sacrifices; अपि (api) - even; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels;]
(O best of the Bharatas, this supreme secret of the sages—approaching the sacred places—is meritorious; even excels than sacrifices.)

अनुपोष्य त्रिरात्राणि तीर्थान्यनभिगम्य च। अदत्त्वा काञ्चनं गाश्च दरिद्रो नाम जायते ॥०३-८०-३९॥
anupoṣya trirātrāṇi tīrthānyanabhigamya ca। adattvā kāñcanaṃ gāśca daridro nāma jāyate॥03-80-39॥
[अनुपोष्य (anupoṣya) - without fasting; त्रिरात्राणि (trirātrāṇi) - three nights; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; अनभिगम्य (anabhigamya) - without approaching; च (ca) - and; अदत्त्वा (adattvā) - without giving; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; दरिद्रः (daridraḥ) - poor; नाम (nāma) - by name; जायते (jāyate) - is (so) called;]

If someone neither fasts for three nights nor goes to holy places, and does not give gold or cows, he is regarded as 'poor'. (3-80-39)
अग्निष्टोमादिभिर्यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा विपुलदक्षिणैः। न तत्फलमवाप्नोति तीर्थाभिगमनेन यत् ॥०३-८०-४०॥
agniṣṭomādibhir yajñair iṣṭvā vipuladakṣiṇaiḥ. na tat phalam avāpnoti tīrthābhigamanena yat ॥03-80-40॥

(With Agniṣṭoma and other sacrifices, having performed, with abundant gifts, not that fruit obtains by approaching holy places which.)
Even by performing sacrifices such as Agniṣṭoma with abundant gifts, one does not obtain that reward which is attained by approaching holy places. (03-80-40)
नृलोके देवदेवस्य तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। पुष्करं नाम विख्यातं महाभागः समाविशेत् ॥०३-८०-४१॥
nṛ-loke deva-devasya tīrthaṁ trailokya-viśrutam। puṣkaraṁ nāma vikhyātaṁ mahābhāgaḥ samāviśet॥03-80-41॥
[नृलोके (nṛ-loke) - in the world of men; देवदेवस्य (deva-devasya) - of the god of gods; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokya-viśrutam) - renowned in the three worlds; पुष्करं (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara; नाम (nāma) - by name; विख्यातम् (vikhyātam) - famous; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - the highly fortunate one; समाविशेत् (samāviśet) - should enter;]
(In the world of men, of the god of gods, the sacred place renowned in the three worlds, Puṣkara by name, famous, the highly fortunate one should enter.)
The highly fortunate one should enter Puṣkara, the famous sacred place of the god of gods, renowned throughout the three worlds, on earth. (03-80-41)
दश कोटिसहस्राणि तीर्थानां वै महीपते। सांनिध्यं पुष्करे येषां त्रिसन्ध्यं कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-८०-४२॥
daśa koṭisahasrāṇi tīrthānāṃ vai mahīpate। sānnidhyaṃ puṣkare yeṣāṃ trisandhyaṃ kurunandana ॥03-80-42॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; कोटिसहस्राणि (koṭisahasrāṇi) - crore-thousands (tens of millions); तीर्थानां (tīrthānāṃ) - of holy places; वै (vai) - indeed; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth; सांनिध्यं (sānnidhyaṃ) - presence; पुष्करे (puṣkare) - at Puṣkara; येषां (yeṣāṃ) - of whom; त्रिसन्ध्यं (trisandhyaṃ) - the three sandhyās (dawn, noon, dusk); कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(Ten crore-thousands of holy places indeed, O lord of the earth, the presence in Puṣkara of whom (of those) who observe the three sandhyās, O delight of the Kurus.)
O delight of the Kurus, at Puṣkara, the presence of those who practice the three sandhyās is equal to the presence of ten crore-thousands of holy places, O lord of the earth. (03-80-42)
आदित्या वसवो रुद्राः साध्याश्च समरुद्गणाः। गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव नित्यं संनिहिता विभो ॥०३-८०-४३॥
ādityā vasavo rudrāḥ sādhyāś ca samarudgaṇāḥ। gandharvāpsarasaś caiva nityaṁ saṁnihitā vibho॥03-80-43॥
[आदित्या (ādityā) - the Ādityas; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - the Vasus; रुद्राः (rudrāḥ) - the Rudras; साध्याश्च (sādhyāś ca) - and the Sādhyas; समरुद्गणाः (samarudgaṇāḥ) - together with the Marut-groups; गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव (gandharvāpsarasaś caiva) - and Gandharvas and Apsarases also; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; संनिहिता (saṁnihitā) - being present; विभो (vibho) - O Lord;]
(The Ādityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, and the Sādhyas together with the Marut-groups, and Gandharvas and Apsarases also, always being present, O Lord.)
O Lord, the Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Sādhyas, the hosts of Maruts, as well as Gandharvas and Apsarases, are always present (here). (03-80-43)
यत्र देवास्तपस्तप्त्वा दैत्या ब्रह्मर्षयस्तथा। दिव्ययोगा महाराज पुण्येन महतान्विताः ॥०३-८०-४४॥
yatra devās tapastaptvā daityā brahmarṣayas tathā। divyayogā mahārāja puṇyena mahatānvitāḥ ॥03-80-44॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed (heat, i.e. austerity); दैत्या (daityāḥ) - asuras (demons); ब्रह्मर्षयः (brahmarṣayaḥ) - brahmanical sages; तथा (tathā) - also; दिव्ययोगाः (divyayogāḥ) - possessed of divine power; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - with merit; महताअन्विताः (mahatānvitāḥ) - endowed with greatness;]
(Where gods having performed austerity, asuras, brahmanical sages also, possessed of divine power, O great king, with merit, endowed with greatness.)
O great king, that is where gods, asuras, and brahmanical sages, having performed austerities, endowed with great merit and divine powers, reside. (03-80-44)
मनसाप्यभिकामस्य पुष्कराणि मनस्विनः। पूयन्ते सर्वपापानि नाकपृष्ठे च पूज्यते ॥०३-८०-४५॥
manasāpyabhikāmasya puṣkarāṇi manasvinaḥ। pūyante sarvapāpāni nākapṛṣṭhe ca pūjyate॥03-80-45॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by the mind; अपि (api) - even; अभिकामस्य (abhikāmasya) - of one who desires; पुष्कराणि (puṣkarāṇi) - lotuses; मनस्विनः (manasvinaḥ) - of the noble-minded; पूयन्ते (pūyante) - are purified; सर्वपापानि (sarvapāpāni) - all sins; नाकपृष्ठे (nākapṛṣṭhe) - on the summit of heaven; च (ca) - and; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored;]
(By the mind even, of one who desires, the lotuses of the noble-minded, all sins are purified; on the summit of heaven and, is honored.)

तस्मिंस्तीर्थे महाभाग नित्यमेव पितामहः। उवास परमप्रीतो देवदानवसंमतः ॥०३-८०-४६॥
tasmiṁs tīrthe mahābhāga nityam eva pitāmahaḥ। uvāsa paramaprīto devadānavasaṁmataḥ॥03-80-46॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - at the holy place; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O highly fortunate one; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; परमप्रीतः (paramaprītaḥ) - extremely pleased; देवदानवसंमतः (devadānavasaṁmataḥ) - approved by gods and asuras;]
(In that holy place, O highly fortunate one, always indeed the grandsire dwelt, extremely pleased, approved by gods and asuras.)
In that holy place, O highly fortunate one, the grandsire, always indeed, dwelt there, greatly pleased and honored by both gods and asuras. (03-80-46)
पुष्करेषु महाभाग देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः। सिद्धिं समभिसम्प्राप्ताः पुण्येन महतान्विताः ॥०३-८०-४७॥
puṣkareṣu mahābhāga devāḥ sarṣipurogamāḥ। siddhiṃ samabhisamprāptāḥ puṇyena mahatānvitāḥ॥03-80-47॥
[पुष्करेषु (puṣkareṣu) - in the Puṣkara (lakes); महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate ones; (vocative) देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सर्षिपुरोगमाः (sarṣipurogamāḥ) - with the sages (ṛṣi) at the front; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - success; समभिसम्प्राप्ताः (samabhisamprāptāḥ) - completely attained; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by merit; महतान्विताः (mahatānvitāḥ) - endowed with greatness;]
(In the Puṣkara (lakes), O greatly fortunate ones, the gods with the sages at the front, success completely attained, by merit, endowed with greatness.)
In the Puṣkara lakes, O greatly fortunate ones, the gods led by the sages attained supreme success, endowed with great merit. (03-80-47)
तत्राभिषेकं यः कुर्यात्पितृदेवार्चने रतः। अश्वमेधं दशगुणं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥०३-८०-४८॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ yaḥ kuryāt pitṛdevārcane rataḥ। aśvamedhaṃ daśaguṇaṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ॥03-80-48॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - anointing; consecration; यः (yaḥ) - who; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would perform; पितृदेव-अर्चने (pitṛdeva-arcane) - in worship of ancestors and gods; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; अश्वमेधं (aśvamedham) - aśvamedha sacrifice; दशगुणं (daśaguṇam) - tenfold (greater); प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they declare; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(There, the one who would perform the anointing, engaged in worship of ancestors and gods—the wise declare it to be ten times (greater than) the aśvamedha sacrifice.)
There, whoever performs the anointing and is engaged in the worship of ancestors and gods, the wise proclaim it to be ten times greater than the aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-80-48)
अप्येकं भोजयेद्विप्रं पुष्करारण्यमाश्रितः। तेनासौ कर्मणा भीष्म प्रेत्य चेह च मोदते ॥०३-८०-४९॥
apy ekaṁ bhojayet vipraṁ puṣkarāraṇyam āśritaḥ। tena asau karmaṇā bhīṣma pretya ca iha ca modate॥03-80-49॥
[अपि (api) - even; एकम् (ekaṁ) - one; भोजयेत् (bhojayet) - may cause to be fed; विप्रं (vipraṁ) - a Brāhmaṇa; पुष्करारण्यम् (puṣkarāraṇyam) - Puṣkara-forest; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - having taken shelter; तेन (tena) - by that; असौ (asau) - he; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed (after death); च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(Even one (who) may cause to be fed a Brāhmaṇa, having taken shelter in Puṣkara-forest, by that act, he, O Bhīṣma, after death and here also, rejoices.)
Even if a person in the Puṣkara-forest causes a single Brāhmaṇa to be fed, by that act, O Bhīṣma, he rejoices both in this world and after death. (03-80-49)
शाकमूलफलैर्वापि येन वर्तयते स्वयम्। तद्वै दद्याद्ब्राह्मणाय श्रद्धावाननसूयकः ॥ तेनैव प्राप्नुयात्प्राज्ञो हयमेधफलं नरः ॥०३-८०-५०॥
śākamūlaphalair vāpi yena vartayate svayam। tad vai dadyād brāhmaṇāya śraddhāvān anasūyakaḥ॥ tenaiva prāpnuyāt prājño hayamedhaphalaṃ naraḥ॥03-80-50॥
[शाकमूलफलैः (śākamūlaphalaiḥ) - with vegetables, roots, and fruits; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; येन (yena) - by which; वर्तयते (vartayate) - sustains (oneself); स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - one should give; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to a brāhmaṇa; श्रद्धावान् (śraddhāvān) - faithful; अनसूयकः (anasūyakaḥ) - without envy; तेन (tena) - by that; एव (eva) - indeed; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - the wise man; हयमेधफलं (hayamedhaphalam) - the fruit of a horse sacrifice; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(With vegetables, roots, and fruits, or even whatever by which he sustains himself, that indeed one should give to a brāhmaṇa, the faithful, the one without envy. By that alone, the wise man may obtain the fruit of a horse sacrifice.)
If, even with vegetables, roots, or fruits—whatever one uses to sustain oneself—a man, being faithful and without envy, should give that to a brāhmaṇa, the wise man will thereby obtain the fruit of a horse sacrifice. (03-80-50)
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रो वा राजसत्तम। न वियोनिं व्रजन्त्येते स्नातास्तीर्थे महात्मनः ॥०३-८०-५१॥
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdro vā rājasattama। na viyoniṁ vrajantyete snātāstīrthe mahātmanaḥ ॥03-80-51॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brahmin; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - kṣatriya; वैश्यः (vaiśyaḥ) - vaiśya; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - śūdra; वा (vā) - or; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; न (na) - not; वियोनिं (viyoniṁ) - in a wrong womb; व्रजन्ति (vrajanti) - go; एते (ete) - these; स्नाताः (snātāḥ) - bathed; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - in the (sacred) ford; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled;]
(Brahmin, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra or O best of kings, not in a wrong womb go these bathed in the ford, the great-souled.)
O best of kings, whether a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra, these great-souled ones who have bathed at the sacred ford do not go to a wrong womb. (03-80-51)
कार्त्तिक्यां तु विशेषेण योऽभिगच्छेत पुष्करम्। फलं तत्राक्षयं तस्य वर्धते भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८०-५२॥
kārttikyāṃ tu viśeṣeṇa yo'bhigacchet puṣkaram। phalaṃ tatrākṣayaṃ tasya vardhate bharatarṣabha ॥03-80-52॥
[कार्त्तिक्यां (kārttikyām) - in the month of Kārttikā; तु (tu) - but; indeed; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; यः (yaḥ) - who; अभिगच्छेत् (abhigacchet) - would approach; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara (the holy place); फलं (phalam) - fruit (result, merit); तत्र (tatra) - there; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; undiminishing; तस्य (tasya) - his; वर्धते (vardhate) - grows; increases; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(In Kārttikā, indeed, especially, who would approach Puṣkara, fruit there imperishable his increases, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, whoever especially approaches Puṣkara in the month of Kārttikā, his imperishable merit grows there. (03-80-52)
सायं प्रातः स्मरेद्यस्तु पुष्कराणि कृताञ्जलिः। उपस्पृष्टं भवेत्तेन सर्वतीर्थेषु भारत ॥ प्राप्नुयाच्च नरो लोकान्ब्रह्मणः सदनेऽक्षयान् ॥०३-८०-५३॥
sāyaṁ prātaḥ smared yastu puṣkarāṇi kṛtāñjaliḥ। upaspṛṣṭaṁ bhavet tena sarvatīrtheṣu bhārata॥ prāpnuyāc ca naro lokān brahmaṇaḥ sadane'kṣayān॥03-80-53॥
[सायं (sāyam) - in the evening; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; स्मरेत् (smaret) - should remember; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; पुष्कराणि (puṣkarāṇi) - the lakes (Pushkar); कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; उपस्पृष्टं (upaspṛṣṭam) - touched by (purified by contact); भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; तेन (tena) - by him; सर्वतीर्थेषु (sarvatīrtheṣu) - in all holy places; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; च (ca) - and; नरः (naraḥ) - man; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; सदने (sadane) - in the abode; अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable;]
(In the evening and morning, whoever should remember the lakes with joined palms, by him it becomes as if he is purified by contact at all holy places, O Bhārata. And the man may obtain the imperishable worlds in the abode of Brahmā. (03-80-53))
O Bhārata, whoever remembers the Pushkar lakes with joined palms in the evening and morning, he is regarded as purified as if he had visited all holy places, and he attains the imperishable worlds in the abode of Brahmā. (03-80-53)
जन्मप्रभृति यत्पापं स्त्रियो वा पुरुषस्य वा। पुष्करे स्नातमात्रस्य सर्वमेव प्रणश्यति ॥०३-८०-५४॥
janmaprabhṛti yat pāpaṃ striyo vā puruṣasya vā। puṣkare snātamātrasya sarvam eva praṇaśyati ॥03-80-54॥
[जन्मप्रभृति (janma-prabhṛti) - from birth onward; यत् (yat) - whatever; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; स्त्रियो (striyaḥ) - of women; वा (vā) - or; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of men; वा (vā) - or; पुष्करे (puṣkare) - in Puṣkara (holy place); स्नातमात्रस्य (snāta-mātrasya) - of one who has just bathed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - is destroyed;]
(From birth onward, whatever sin of women or of men, for one who has just bathed in Puṣkara, all indeed is destroyed.)
From birth onward, whatever sin belongs to women or to men, for one who has just bathed in Puṣkara, all of it is completely destroyed. (03-80-54)
यथा सुराणां सर्वेषामादिस्तु मधुसूदनः। तथैव पुष्करं राजंस्तीर्थानामादिरुच्यते ॥०३-८०-५५॥
yathā surāṇāṃ sarveṣām ādis tu madhusūdanaḥ। tathaiva puṣkaraṃ rājaṃs tīrthānām ādir ucyate॥03-80-55॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; सुराणां (surāṇām) - of the gods; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; आदिः (ādiḥ) - beginning; तु (tu) - indeed; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana (Vishnu, the slayer of Madhu); तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Pushkara (proper noun, a holy place); राजन् (rājan) - O King; तीर्थानाम् (tīrthānām) - of holy places; आदिः (ādiḥ) - beginning; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(Just as of the gods, of all, the beginning indeed is Madhusudana; in the same way, Pushkara, O King, of holy places, the beginning is said.)
Just as Madhusudana (Vishnu) is the foremost among all the gods, so also, O King, Pushkara is said to be the foremost among holy places. (03-80-55)
उष्य द्वादश वर्षाणि पुष्करे नियतः शुचिः। क्रतून्सर्वानवाप्नोति ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८०-५६॥
uṣya dvādaśa varṣāṇi puṣkare niyataḥ śuciḥ। kratūn sarvān avāpnoti brahmalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-80-56॥
[उष्य (uṣya) - residing; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; पुष्करे (puṣkare) - in Puṣkara (holy place); नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-restrained; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; क्रतून् (kratūn) - sacrifices; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokaṃ) - the world of Brahma; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Residing twelve years in Puṣkara, self-restrained, pure, he obtains all sacrifices, and the world of Brahma he goes.)
Whoever resides in Puṣkara for twelve years with self-restraint and purity gains the merit of all sacrifices and attains the world of Brahma. (03-80-56)
यस्तु वर्षशतं पूर्णमग्निहोत्रमुपासते। कार्त्तिकीं वा वसेदेकां पुष्करे सममेव तत् ॥०३-८०-५७॥
yastu varṣaśataṃ pūrṇam agnihotram upāsate। kārttikīṃ vā vased ekāṃ puṣkare samam eva tat॥03-80-57॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; वर्षशतम् (varṣaśatam) - hundred years; पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - complete; अग्निहोत्रम् (agnihotram) - agnihotra ritual; उपासते (upāsate) - worships; कार्त्तिकीम् (kārttikīm) - Kārttikā (full moon night); वा (vā) - or; वसेत् (vaset) - dwells; एकाम् (ekām) - one (night); पुष्करे (puṣkare) - in Puṣkara (holy place); समम् (samam) - as much; एव (eva) - truly; तत् (tat) - that;]
(But who worships agnihotra ritual for a hundred complete years, or dwells one (night) in Puṣkara on Kārttikā, that is truly as much.)
But one who worships through agnihotra for a full hundred years, or spends even one night in Puṣkara during Kārttikā, that act is truly equal. (03-80-57)
दुष्करं पुष्करं गन्तुं दुष्करं पुष्करे तपः। दुष्करं पुष्करे दानं वस्तुं चैव सुदुष्करम् ॥०३-८०-५८॥
duṣkaraṃ puṣkaraṃ gantuṃ duṣkaraṃ puṣkare tapaḥ। duṣkaraṃ puṣkare dānaṃ vastuṃ caiva suduṣkaram ॥03-80-58॥
[दुष्करं (duṣkaram) - difficult; difficult to do; पुष्करं (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara (holy place); गन्तुं (gantuṃ) - to go; दुष्करं (duṣkaram) - difficult; पुष्करे (puṣkare) - in Puṣkara; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; दुष्करं (duṣkaram) - difficult; पुष्करे (puṣkare) - in Puṣkara; दानं (dānam) - gift; charity; वस्तुं (vastuṃ) - to dwell; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; really; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult;]
(Difficult Puṣkara to go, difficult in Puṣkara austerity; difficult in Puṣkara alms to give, to dwell also indeed very difficult.)
It is difficult to go to Puṣkara, difficult to perform austerities at Puṣkara; giving alms at Puṣkara is difficult, and to dwell there also is indeed very difficult. (03-80-58)
उष्य द्वादशरात्रं तु नियतो नियताशनः। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्तो जम्बूमार्गं समाविशेत् ॥०३-८०-५९॥
uṣya dvādaśarātraṃ tu niyato niyatāśanaḥ। pradakṣiṇam upāvṛtto jambūmārgaṃ samāviśet।॥03-80-59॥
[उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; द्वादशरात्रम् (dvādaśarātram) - twelve nights; तु (tu) - but; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - one of regulated food; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - right (auspicious) direction; उपावृत्तः (upāvṛttaḥ) - having turned; जम्बूमार्गम् (jambūmārgam) - the Jambu path/road; समाविशेत् (samāviśet) - should enter;]
(Having stayed twelve nights but, self-controlled, of regulated food, having turned to the right (auspicious) side, he should enter the Jambu path.)
After staying for twelve nights, being self-controlled and regulated in food, having turned auspiciously to the right, he should enter the Jambu road. (03-80-59)
जम्बूमार्गं समाविश्य देवर्षिपितृसेवितम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति विष्णुलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८०-६०॥
jambūmārgaṃ samāviśya devarṣipitṛsevitam। aśvamedhamavāpnoti viṣṇulokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-80-60॥
[जम्बूमार्गं (jambūmārgaṃ) - Jambu path; (the path named Jambu;) समाविश्य (samāviśya) - having entered; (after entering;) देवर्षिपितृसेवितम् (devarṣipitṛsevitam) - served by gods, sages, and ancestors; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice;) अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; (gains;) विष्णुलोकं (viṣṇulokaṃ) - Vishnu's realm; (the world of Vishnu;) च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Having entered the Jambu path, served by gods, sages, and ancestors, he obtains the Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice) and goes to Vishnu's realm.)
By entering the path of Jambu, which is honored by gods, sages, and ancestors, one attains merit equal to performing the Aśvamedha sacrifice and reaches the realm of Vishnu. (03-80-60)
तत्रोष्य रजनीः पञ्च षष्ठकालक्षमी नरः। न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति सिद्धिं प्राप्नोति चोत्तमाम् ॥०३-८०-६१॥
tatroṣya rajanīḥ pañca ṣaṣṭhakālakṣamī naraḥ। na durgatim avāpnoti siddhiṃ prāpnoti cottamām॥03-80-61॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having spent the night; रजनीः (rajanīḥ) - nights; पञ्च (pañca) - five; षष्ठकालक्षमी (ṣaṣṭhakālakṣamī) - lasting up to the sixth period; नरः (naraḥ) - man; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - misfortune; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; च (ca) - and; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - highest;]
(There, having spent five nights up to the sixth period, the man does not obtain misfortune, he attains success and the highest (achievement).)
There, a man who stays for five nights up to the sixth period does not fall into misfortune; he attains success and the highest accomplishment. (03-80-61)
जम्बूमार्गादुपावृत्तो गच्छेत्तण्डुलिकाश्रमम्। न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोके च पूज्यते ॥०३-८०-६२॥
jambū-mārgād-upāvṛtto gacchet-taṇḍulikāśramam। na durgatim-avāpnoti svargaloke ca pūjyate ॥03-80-62॥
[जम्बूमार्गात् (jambū-mārgāt) - from the Jambu path; उपावृत्तः (upāvṛttaḥ) - having turned back; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; तण्डुलिकाश्रमम् (taṇḍulikāśramam) - to the hermitage of Taṇḍulika; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - bad fate; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the heavenly world; च (ca) - and; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored;]
(From the Jambu path having turned back, should go to the hermitage of Taṇḍulika. Not bad fate attains, in the heavenly world and is honored.)
Who, having turned back from the Jambu path, goes to the hermitage of Taṇḍulika, does not meet with misfortune and is honored in heaven. (03-80-62)
अगस्त्यसर आसाद्य पितृदेवार्चने रतः। त्रिरात्रोपोषितो राजन्नग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-६३॥
agastyasara āsādya pitṛdevārcane rataḥ। trirātroṣito rājannagniṣṭomaphalaṃ labhet॥03-80-63॥
[अगस्त्यसर (agastyasara) - Agastya lake; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; पितृदेव (pitṛdeva) - ancestors and gods; अर्चने (arcane) - in worship; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; त्रिरात्र (trirātra) - three nights; उपोषितः (upoṣitaḥ) - having fasted; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭomaphalaṃ) - Agniṣṭoma rite's fruit; लभेत् (labhet) - he obtains;]
(Having reached Agastya lake, engaged in worship of ancestors and gods; having fasted for three nights, O king, one obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma rite.)
O king, by reaching Agastya lake, engaging in the worship of ancestors and gods, and fasting for three nights, one attains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-80-63)
शाकवृत्तिः फलैर्वापि कौमारं विन्दते पदम्। कण्वाश्रमं समासाद्य श्रीजुष्टं लोकपूजितम् ॥०३-८०-६४॥
śākavṛttiḥ phalair vāpi kaumāraṁ vindate padam। kaṇvāśramaṁ samāsādya śrī-juṣṭaṁ loka-pūjitam॥03-80-64॥
[शाकवृत्तिः (śākavṛttiḥ) - one living on vegetables; फलैः (phalaiḥ) - with fruits; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; कौमारं (kaumāram) - youthful; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; पदम् (padam) - state; कण्वाश्रमं (kaṇvāśramam) - the hermitage of Kaṇva; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; श्रीजुष्टं (śrī-juṣṭam) - endowed with prosperity; लोकपूजितम् (loka-pūjitam) - honored by people;]
(One living on vegetables, or with fruits also, youthful state obtains; having approached the hermitage of Kaṇva, endowed with prosperity, honored by people.)
Either by living on vegetables or fruits, a youthful state is attained; after approaching the hermitage of Kaṇva, which is endowed with prosperity and honored by people. (03-80-64)
धर्मारण्यं हि तत्पुण्यमाद्यं च भरतर्षभ। यत्र प्रविष्टमात्रो वै पापेभ्यो विप्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८०-६५॥
dharmāraṇyaṃ hi tat puṇyam ādyaṃ ca bharatarṣabha। yatra praviṣṭa-mātraḥ vai pāpebhyaḥ vipramucyate ॥03-80-65॥
[धर्मारण्यं (dharmāraṇyam) - forest of dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; आद्यं (ādyaṃ) - primordial; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; यत्र (yatra) - where; प्रविष्टमात्रः (praviṣṭa-mātraḥ) - just having entered; वै (vai) - indeed; पापेभ्यः (pāpebhyaḥ) - from sins; विप्रमुच्यते (vipramucyate) - is completely freed;]
(Indeed, that forest of dharma is holy and primordial, O best of the Bharatas; where just having entered, indeed, one is completely freed from sins.)
O best of the Bharatas, that forest of dharma is truly holy and ancient; simply by entering it, one is completely freed from sins. (03-80-65)
अर्चयित्वा पितॄन्देवान्नियतो नियताशनः। सर्वकामसमृद्धस्य यज्ञस्य फलमश्नुते ॥०३-८०-६६॥
arcayitvā pitṝn devān niyataḥ niyata-āśanaḥ। sarva-kāma-samṛddhasya yajñasya phalam aśnute॥03-80-66॥
[अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; देवान् (devān) - gods; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-restrained; नियताशनः (niyata-āśanaḥ) - restrained in food; सर्वकामसमृद्धस्य (sarva-kāma-samṛddhasya) - of one whose all desires are fulfilled; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains;]
(Having worshipped ancestors and gods, self-restrained, restrained in food, he obtains the fruit of the sacrifice of one whose all desires are fulfilled.)
Having worshipped the ancestors and the gods, self-controlled and regulated in diet, he attains the fruit of the sacrifice filled with all desires. (03-80-66)
प्रदक्षिणं ततः कृत्वा ययातिपतनं व्रजेत्। हयमेधस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति तत्र वै ॥०३-८०-६७॥
pradakṣiṇaṃ tataḥ kṛtvā yayātipatanaṃ vrajet। hayamedhasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti tatra vai॥03-80-67॥
[प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; ययातिपतनं (yayātipatanaṃ) - Yayāti’s-descent; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; हयमेधस्य (hayamedhasya) - of the Aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Circumambulation then having done, Yayāti’s-descent should go; of the Aśvamedha sacrifice fruit one obtains there indeed (03-80-67))
After circumambulating, one should then proceed to Yayāti’s Descent; there, indeed, one obtains the fruit of an Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice) (03-80-67)
महाकालं ततो गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः। कोटितीर्थमुपस्पृश्य हयमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-६८॥
mahākālaṃ tato gacchen niyato niyatāśanaḥ। koṭitīrtham upaspṛśya hayamedhaphalaṃ labhet॥03-80-68॥
[महाकालम् (mahākālam) - to Mahākāla (Shiva); ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - moderate in eating; कोटितीर्थम् (koṭitīrtham) - Koṭitīrtha (name of a sacred place); उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having bathed (having touched water); हयमेधफलं (hayamedhaphalam) - the fruit of an Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(To Mahākāla then should go, self-controlled, moderate in eating. Koṭitīrtha having bathed (having touched water), the fruit of a horse sacrifice one obtains. (03-80-68))
Then, one who is self-controlled and moderate in eating should go to Mahākāla. After bathing at Koṭitīrtha, one obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice. (03-80-68)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ पुण्यस्थानमुमापतेः। नाम्ना भद्रवटं नाम त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् ॥०३-८०-६९॥
tato gacchet dharmajña puṇyasthānam umāpateḥ। nāmnā bhadravaṭaṃ nāma triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam॥03-80-69॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should proceed; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; पुण्यस्थानम् (puṇyasthānam) - sacred place; उमापतेः (umāpateḥ) - of Umāpati; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; भद्रवटम् (bhadravaṭam) - Bhadra-vaṭa; नाम (nāma) - name; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned;]
(Then should proceed, knower of dharma, sacred place of Umāpati, by name Bhadra-vaṭa, name in the three worlds renowned.)
Then, the one who knows dharma should go to the sacred place of Umāpati called Bhadra-vaṭa, which is renowned by name in all three worlds. (03-80-69)
तत्राभिगम्य चेशानं गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। महादेवप्रसादाच्च गाणपत्यमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८०-७०॥
tatrābhigamya ceśānaṃ gosahasraphalaṃ labhet। mahādevaprasādācca gāṇapatyam avāpnuyāt॥03-80-70॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; च (ca) - and; ईशानम् (īśānam) - Īśāna (Lord Shiva); गो (go) - cow; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; फलम् (phalam) - fruit (result); लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains; महादेव (mahādeva) - Mahādeva (Great Lord, Shiva); प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the grace; च (ca) - and; गाणपत्यं (gāṇapatyam) - the state related to Gaṇapati; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(There having approached and Īśāna (lord Shiva), cow thousand fruit (result) one obtains. By the grace of Mahādeva and, the state related to Gaṇapati may attain.)
There, having approached Īśāna (Lord Shiva), one obtains the merit equal to a thousand cows; and by the grace of Mahādeva, one attains association with Gaṇapati. (03-80-70)
नर्मदामथ चासाद्य नदीं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुताम्। तर्पयित्वा पितॄन्देवानग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-७१॥
narmadā-matha ca āsādya nadīṁ trailokya-viśrutām। tarpayitvā pitṝn devān agniṣṭoma-phalaṁ labheta॥03-80-71॥
[नर्मदा (narmadā) - Narmadā (name of river); अथ (atha) - then; च (ca) - and; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; नदीम् (nadīm) - the river; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुताम् (trailokya-viśrutām) - renowned in the three worlds; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied (offered oblations to); पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; देवान् (devān) - gods; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭoma-phalaṁ) - the fruit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - one obtains;]
(Then, having reached the Narmadā river, renowned in the three worlds, and having satisfied the ancestors and gods, one obtains the fruit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)
If, then, one reaches the Narmadā river, famed throughout the three worlds, and offers oblations to the ancestors and gods, he obtains the result of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-80-71)
दक्षिणं सिन्धुमासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति विमानं चाधिरोहति ॥०३-८०-७२॥
dakṣiṇaṃ sindhum āsādya brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। agniṣṭomam avāpnoti vimānaṃ ca adhirohati॥03-80-72॥
[दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - southern; सिन्धुम् (sindhum) - ocean; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - student devoted to brahman; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are conquered; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; विमानम् (vimānam) - celestial chariot; च (ca) - and; आधिरोहति (adhirohati) - ascends;]
(Having reached the southern ocean, the brahmacārī who has conquered his senses attains the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and ascends the celestial chariot.)
A brahmacārī who has conquered his senses, having reached the southern ocean, attains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and ascends a celestial chariot. (3-80-72)
चर्मण्वतीं समासाद्य नियतो नियताशनः। रन्तिदेवाभ्यनुज्ञातो अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-७३॥
carmaṇvatīṃ samāsādya niyato niyatāśanaḥ। rantidevābhyanujñāto agniṣṭomaphalaṃ labheta ॥03-80-73॥
[चर्मण्वतीं (carmaṇvatīṃ) - (the river) Carmaṇvatī; (proper noun); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; having attained; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; restrained; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - one of controlled diet; of regulated eating; रन्तिदेवाभ्यनुज्ञातः (rantidevābhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted by Rantideva; obtained consent of Rantideva; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭomaphalaṃ) - fruit (result) of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - one obtains; may attain;]
(Having approached Carmaṇvatī, self-controlled, regulated in diet, permitted by Rantideva, (one) may obtain the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)
If one approaches Carmaṇvatī, maintains self-control and regulated diet, and is given permission by Rantideva, one may obtain the result of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-80-73)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ हिमवत्सुतमर्बुदम्। पृथिव्यां यत्र वै छिद्रं पूर्वमासीद्युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-८०-७४॥
tato gacchet dharmajña himavatsutam arbudaṃ। pṛthivyāṃ yatra vai chidraṃ pūrvam āsīd yudhiṣṭhira॥03-80-74॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; हिमवत्सुतम् (himavatsutam) - Himavat's offspring (i.e., produced by Himavat; here refers to the Arbuda mountain); अर्बुदम् (arbudaṃ) - Arbuda (Mount Abu); पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; यत्र (yatra) - where; वै (vai) - indeed; छिद्रम् (chidram) - hole; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Then should go, knower of dharma, Himavat's offspring Arbuda; on the earth where indeed hole formerly was, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Then, Yudhiṣṭhira, knower of dharma, you should go to Arbuda, the offspring of Himavat, on the earth where there was once a hole. (03-80-74)
तत्राश्रमो वसिष्ठस्य त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-७५॥
tatrāśramo vasiṣṭhasya triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ। tatroṣya rajanīm ekāṃ gosahasraphalaṃ labhet॥03-80-75॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - famous; तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṃ) - rewarded by a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(There āśrama of Vasiṣṭha in three worlds famous. There having stayed night one, rewarded by a thousand cows one obtains.)
There is the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha, renowned in the three worlds. Whoever stays there for one night obtains the merit equal to a thousand cows. (03-80-75)
पिङ्गातीर्थमुपस्पृश्य ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। कपिलानां नरव्याघ्र शतस्य फलमश्नुते ॥०३-८०-७६॥
piṅgātīrtham-upaspṛśya brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। kapilānāṃ naravyāghra śatasya phalam-aśnute ॥03-80-76॥
[पिङ्गातीर्थम् (piṅgātīrtham) - Piṅgā-tīrtha; (the) sacred place of Piṅgā; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; having bathed; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - student of sacred knowledge; celibate; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered (his) senses; कपिलानाम् (kapilānām) - of tawny(-colored cows); नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; शतस्य (śatasya) - of (the) hundred; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains; enjoys;]
(Having touched Piṅgā-tīrtha, a brahmacārī, one who has conquered (his) senses, O tiger among men, obtains the fruit of a hundred tawny(-colored cows).)
O tiger among men, a brahmacārī who has mastered his senses and touches the sacred Piṅgā-tīrtha attains the merit equivalent to donating a hundred tawny cows. (03-80-76)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ प्रभासं लोकविश्रुतम्। यत्र संनिहितो नित्यं स्वयमेव हुताशनः ॥ देवतानां मुखं वीर अनलोऽनिलसारथिः ॥०३-८०-७७॥
tato gacchet dharmajña prabhāsaṃ lokaviśrutam। yatra saṃnihito nityaṃ svayameva hutāśanaḥ ॥ devatānāṃ mukhaṃ vīra analo'nilasārathiḥ ॥03-80-77॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; प्रभासम् (prabhāsam) - Prabhāsa (proper noun, sacred place); लोकविश्रुतम् (lokaviśrutam) - famous in the world; यत्र (yatra) - where; संनिहितः (saṃnihitaḥ) - present; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एव (eva) - indeed; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - fire (Agni); देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the gods; मुखम् (mukham) - mouth; वीर (vīra) - hero; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire; अनिलसारथिः (anilasārathiḥ) - who has Wind as his charioteer;]
(Then, the knower of dharma should go to Prabhāsa, famous in the world; where indeed fire himself is always present. O hero, fire—who has Wind as his charioteer—is the mouth of the gods.)
Then, O knower of dharma, you should go to Prabhāsa, renowned throughout the world, where fire himself is always present. O hero, fire, who has Wind as his charioteer, is the mouth of the gods. (03-80-77)
तस्मिंस्तीर्थवरे स्नात्वा शुचिः प्रयतमानसः। अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८०-७८॥
tasmintīrthavare snātvā śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ। agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṁ phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-80-78॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थवरे (tīrthavare) - excellent pilgrimage; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with concentrated mind; अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां (agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṁ) - with Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra (sacrifices); फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(In that excellent pilgrimage, having bathed, pure, with concentrated mind, with Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra (sacrifices) fruit, obtains a man.)
A man who, after bathing at that most excellent pilgrimage, with purity and a concentrated mind, obtains the fruit of performing both the Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices. (03-80-78)
ततो गत्वा सरस्वत्याः सागरस्य च सङ्गमे। गोसहस्रफलं प्राप्य स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥ दीप्यमानोऽग्निवन्नित्यं प्रभया भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८०-७९॥

(Then, having gone to the confluence of Sarasvati and the ocean, having obtained the fruit of a thousand cows, in the world of heaven one is honored; shining like fire always, with radiance, O best of the Bharatas.)
Then, after going to the confluence of the Sarasvati and the ocean, and thereby gaining the reward equal to a thousand cows, one is honored in heaven; always shining with glory, like fire, O best of the Bharatas. (03-80-79)
त्रिरात्रमुषितस्तत्र तर्पयेत्पितृदेवताः। प्रभासते यथा सोमो अश्वमेधं च विन्दति ॥०३-८०-८०॥
trirātram uṣitas tatra tarpayet pitṛdevatāḥ। prabhāsate yathā somo aśvamedhaṃ ca vindati॥03-80-80॥
[त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - for three nights; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having stayed; तत्र (tatra) - there; तर्पयेत् (tarpayet) - should satisfy; पितृदेवताः (pitṛdevatāḥ) - the ancestor deities; प्रभासते (prabhāsate) - shines forth; यथा (yathā) - as; सोमः (somaḥ) - the Soma (moon); अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Ashvamedha (horse-sacrifice); च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains;]
(Having stayed there for three nights, one should satisfy the ancestor deities. Shines forth as the Soma, and obtains the Ashvamedha (horse-sacrifice).)
Staying there for three nights, he should satisfy the ancestor deities; he becomes radiant like Soma and attains the merit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice. (03-80-80)
वरदानं ततो गच्छेत्तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। विष्णोर्दुर्वाससा यत्र वरो दत्तो युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-८०-८१॥
varadānaṃ tato gacchettīrthaṃ bharatasattama। viṣṇor durvāsasā yatra varo datto yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-80-81॥

(The boon then, you should go, O best of the Bharatas, to the holy place of Viṣṇu, where by Durvāsas the boon was given, O Yudhishthira.)
O best of the Bharatas, Yudhishthira, then you should go to the holy place of Viṣṇu, where Durvāsas gave the boon. (03-80-81)
वरदाने नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। ततो द्वारवतीं गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः ॥ पिण्डारके नरः स्नात्वा लभेद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८०-८२॥

(At Varadāna, a man having bathed obtains the fruit of a thousand cows. Then, to Dvāravatī, self-controlled, with regulated food, he should go. At Piṇḍāraka, a man having bathed obtains much gold.)
At Varadāna, one who bathes gains the merit equivalent to giving a thousand cows. Then, practicing self-restraint and regulated diet, he should proceed to Dvāravatī. Bathing at Piṇḍāraka, a man acquires much gold. (03-80-82)
तस्मिंस्तीर्थे महाभाग पद्मलक्षणलक्षिताः। अद्यापि मुद्रा दृश्यन्ते तदद्भुतमरिंदम॥०३-८०-८३॥
tasmiṃs tīrthe mahābhāga padma-lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ। adyāpi mudrā dṛśyante tad adbhutam ariṃdama॥03-80-83॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - sacred place; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - greatly fortunate one; पद्मलक्षणलक्षिताः (padma-lakṣaṇa-lakṣitāḥ) - marked by the signs of a lotus; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; मुद्रा (mudrā) - imprints; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonder; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(In that sacred place, O greatly fortunate one, imprints marked by the signs of a lotus are seen even today; that is a wonder, O subduer of enemies.)
O subduer of enemies, even today, in that sacred place, the imprints marked by the signs of a lotus can still be seen; that is indeed a wonder. (03-80-83)
त्रिशूलाङ्कानि पद्मानि दृश्यन्ते कुरुनन्दन। महादेवस्य सांनिध्यं तत्रैव भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८०-८४॥
triśūlāṅkāni padmāni dṛśyante kurunandana। mahādevasya sānnidhyaṃ tatraiva bharatarṣabha ॥03-80-84॥

तर्पयित्वा पितॄन्देवानृषींश्च भरतर्षभ। प्राप्नोति वारुणं लोकं दीप्यमानः स्वतेजसा ॥०३-८०-८६॥

(Having satisfied the ancestors, the gods, and the sages, O best of the Bharatas, attains Varuṇa's world, shining with his own radiance.)

शङ्कुकर्णेश्वरं देवमर्चयित्वा युधिष्ठिर। अश्वमेधं दशगुणं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥०३-८०-८७॥
śaṅkukarṇeśvaraṃ devam arcayitvā yudhiṣṭhira। aśvamedhaṃ daśaguṇaṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ ॥03-80-87॥

(Having worshipped the deity Śaṅkukarṇeśvara, O Yudhiṣṭhira, the sages declare the aśvamedha (horse sacrifice) to be ten times (greater in merit).)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, having worshipped the deity Śaṅkukarṇeśvara, the sages say that performing the aśvamedha (horse sacrifice) is ten times more meritorious. (03-80-87)
प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य गच्छेत भरतर्षभ। तीर्थं कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् ॥ दृमीति नाम्ना विख्यातं सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् ॥०३-८०-८८॥
pradakṣiṇam-upāvṛtya gacchet bharatarṣabha। tīrthaṃ kuruvaraśreṣṭha triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam ॥ dṛmīti nāmnā vikhyātaṃ sarvapāpapramocanam ॥03-80-88॥
[प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; उपावृत्य (upāvṛtya) - having turned towards; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ (kuruvaraśreṣṭha) - O foremost among the best of Kurus; त्रिषु (triṣu) - among the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned; द्रुम् (dṛm) - Drum; इति (iti) - thus; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; विख्यातम् (vikhyātam) - well-known; सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् (sarvapāpapramocanam) - releasing from all sins;]
(Circumambulation having turned, one should go, O best of the Bharatas; the holy place, O foremost among the best of Kurus, among the three worlds, renowned. Drum, thus by name, well-known, releasing from all sins.)
O best of the Bharatas, after circumambulating, you should go, for the holy place named Drum, renowned among the three worlds, O foremost of the Kurus, is well-known for freeing from all sins. (03-80-88)
यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा उपासन्ते महेश्वरम्। तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च रुद्रं देवगणैर्वृतम् ॥ जन्मप्रभृति पापानि कृतानि नुदते नरः ॥०३-८०-८९॥
yatra brahmādayo devā upāsante maheśvaram। tatra snātvā arcayitvā ca rudraṃ devagaṇairvṛtam॥ janmaprabhṛti pāpāni kṛtāni nudate naraḥ॥03-80-89॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahmā and others; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; उपासन्ते (upāsante) - worship; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - Maheshvara; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - by hosts of gods; वृतम् (vṛtam) - surrounded; जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhṛti) - from birth onward; पापानि (pāpāni) - sins; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - committed; नुदते (nudate) - removes; नरः (naraḥ) - a man;]
(Where Brahmā and other gods worship Maheshvara, there, having bathed and having worshipped Rudra surrounded by hosts of gods, a man removes sins committed from birth onward.)
Where Brahmā and other gods worship Maheshvara, there, if a person bathes and worships Rudra, who is surrounded by the hosts of gods, he destroys all sins committed from birth onwards. (03-80-89)
दृमी चात्र नरश्रेष्ठ सर्वदेवैरभिष्टुता। तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र हयमेधमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८०-९०॥
dṛmī cātra naraśreṣṭha sarvadevair abhiṣṭutā। tatra snātvā naravyāghra hayamedham avāpnuyāt॥03-80-90॥
[दृमी (dṛmī) - Dṛmī (name of a river or place); च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best among men; सर्वदेवैः (sarvadevaiḥ) - by all the gods; अभिष्टुता (abhiṣṭutā) - praised; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; हयमेधम् (hayamedham) - the horse sacrifice; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - he may attain;]
(Dṛmī and here, O best among men, praised by all the gods. There, having bathed, O tiger among men, he may attain the horse sacrifice.)
O best of men, the river Dṛmī here is praised by all the gods. Bathing there, O tiger among men, one may attain the fruit of a horse sacrifice. (03-80-90)
जित्वा यत्र महाप्राज्ञ विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना। पुरा शौचं कृतं राजन्हत्वा दैवतकण्टकान् ॥०३-८०-९१॥
jitvā yatra mahāprājña viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā। purā śaucaṃ kṛtaṃ rājanhatvā daivatakaṇṭakān ॥03-80-91॥
[जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; यत्र (yatra) - where; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O wise one; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; प्रभविष्णुना (prabhaviṣṇunā) - by powerful Viṣṇu; पुरा (purā) - formerly; शौचं (śaucaṃ) - purification; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - was done; राजन् (rājan) - O king; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; दैवतकण्टकान् (daivatakaṇṭakān) - divine tormentors;]
(Having conquered, where, O wise one, by Viṣṇu, by powerful Viṣṇu, formerly purification was done, O king, having killed the divine tormentors.)
O king, in that place, O wise one, once powerful Viṣṇu achieved purification, having slain the divine tormentors. (03-80-91)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ वसोर्धारामभिष्टुताम्। गमनादेव तस्यां हि हयमेधमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८०-९२॥
tato gacchet dharmajña vasordhārām abhiṣṭutām। gamanād eva tasyāṃ hi hayamedham avāpnuyāt॥03-80-92॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; वसोः (vasoḥ) - of Viṣṇu (Vasu); धाराम् (dhārām) - stream; अभिष्टुताम् (abhiṣṭutām) - praised; गमनात् (gamanāt) - by going; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that (place); हि (hi) - truly; हयमेधम् (hayamedham) - the Horse-sacrifice; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - would obtain;]
(Then one should go, O knower of dharma, to the praised stream of Vasu. By merely going to that place, indeed, one would obtain the Horse-sacrifice.)
Therefore, O knower of dharma, one should go to the highly praised stream of Vasu; merely by going there, a person attains the merit of the Horse-sacrifice. (03-80-92)
स्नात्वा कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ प्रयतात्मा तु मानवः। तर्प्य देवान्पितॄंश्चैव विष्णुलोके महीयते ॥०३-८०-९३॥
snātvā kuruvaraśreṣṭha prayatātmā tu mānavaḥ। tarpya devānpitṝṁścaiva viṣṇuloke mahīyate ॥03-80-93॥
[स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ (kuruvaraśreṣṭha) - O best among the Kurus; प्रयतात्मा (prayatātmā) - pure-minded; तु (tu) - but; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; तर्प्य (tarpya) - having satisfied; देवान् (devān) - the gods; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विष्णुलोके (viṣṇuloke) - in the world of Viṣṇu; महीयते (mahīyate) - he is honored;]
(Having bathed, O best among the Kurus, the pure-minded man, but, having satisfied the gods and the ancestors indeed, in the world of Viṣṇu, is honored.)
O best of the Kurus, a pure-minded man who, after bathing, satisfies both the gods and the ancestors is indeed honored in the realm of Viṣṇu. (03-80-93)
तीर्थं चात्र परं पुण्यं वसूनां भरतर्षभ। तत्र स्नात्वा च पीत्वा च वसूनां संमतो भवेत् ॥०३-८०-९४॥
tīrthaṃ cātra paraṃ puṇyaṃ vasūnāṃ bharatarṣabha। tatra snātvā ca pītvā ca vasūnāṃ sammato bhavet ॥03-80-94॥
[तीर्थं (tīrtham) - ford; sacred place; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; परं (param) - supreme; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - meritorious; sacred; वसूनां (vasūnām) - of the Vasus (deities); भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; O best of Bharata lineage; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; च (ca) - and; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; वसूनां (vasūnām) - of the Vasus; संमतो (sammataḥ) - approved; honored; भवेत् (bhavet) - one becomes;]
(Ford and here supreme sacred of the Vasus, O bull among the Bharatas. There, having bathed and having drunk, and of the Vasus, approved one becomes.)
O bull among the Bharatas, here is a supreme, sacred ford of the Vasus. There, one who bathes and drinks becomes honored by the Vasus. (03-80-94)
सिन्धूत्तममिति ख्यातं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरश्रेष्ठ लभेद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८०-९५॥
sindhūttamam iti khyātaṃ sarva-pāpa-praṇāśanam। tatra snātvā nara-śreṣṭha labhet bahu suvarṇakam ॥03-80-95॥
[सिन्धूत्तमम् (sindhūttamam) - best of the rivers (Sindhu); इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - renowned; known; सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् (sarva-pāpa-praṇāśanam) - destroyer of all sins; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best of men; लभेत् (labhet) - one attains; one receives; बहु (bahu) - much; many; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold;]
(Best of the rivers thus (is) known, destroyer of all sins. There, having bathed, O best of men, one attains much gold.)
"The best of the rivers" is thus renowned as a destroyer of all sins. There, having bathed, O best of men, one obtains abundant gold. (03-80-95)
ब्रह्मतुङ्गं समासाद्य शुचिः प्रयतमानसः। ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नोति सुकृती विरजा नरः ॥०३-८०-९६॥
brahmatuṅgaṃ samāsādya śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ। brahmalokam avāpnoti sukṛtī virajā naraḥ॥03-80-96॥
[ब्रह्मतुङ्गं (brahmatuṅgam) - the highest Brahman; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with a controlled mind; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - the world of Brahman; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; सुकृती (sukṛtī) - the meritorious one; विरजा (virajā) - free from impurity; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(The man, free from impurity, meritorious, with a controlled mind, pure, having attained the highest Brahman, attains the world of Brahman.)
A pure man with a disciplined mind who, after attaining the highest Brahman, being virtuous and free from blemish, reaches the world of Brahman. (03-80-96)
कुमारिकाणां शक्रस्य तीर्थं सिद्धनिषेवितम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरः क्षिप्रं शक्रलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८०-९७॥
kumārikāṇāṁ śakrasya tīrthaṁ siddhaniṣevitam। tatra snātvā naraḥ kṣipraṁ śakralokam avāpnuyāt ॥03-80-97॥
[कुमारिकाणां (kumārikāṇām) - of maidens; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); तीर्थं (tīrtham) - holy place; सिद्धनिषेवितम् (siddhaniṣevitam) - frequented by perfected beings; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; शक्रलोकम् (śakralokam) - the world of Śakra (Indra); अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(Of maidens of Śakra holy place frequented by perfected beings. There having bathed man quickly the world of Śakra may attain.)
There is a holy place of Śakra belonging to maidens, frequented by perfected beings. If a man bathes there, he quickly attains the world of Śakra (Indra). (03-80-97)
रेणुकायाश्च तत्रैव तीर्थं देवनिषेवितम्। तत्र स्नात्वा भवेद्विप्रो विमलश्चन्द्रमा यथा ॥०३-८०-९८॥
reṇukāyāś ca tatraiva tīrthaṃ deva-niṣevitam। tatra snātvā bhaved vipro vimalaś candramā yathā॥03-80-98॥

(Of Reṇukā and in that very place, the sacred place worshipped by the gods; there bathing, a Brāhmaṇa becomes pure like the moon.)
There is also the sacred place of Reṇukā at that very spot, worshipped by the gods; there, by bathing, a Brāhmaṇa becomes as pure as the moon. (03-80-98)
अथ पञ्चनदं गत्वा नियतो नियताशनः। पञ्च यज्ञानवाप्नोति क्रमशो येऽनुकीर्तिताः ॥०३-८०-९९॥
atha pañcanadaṃ gatvā niyato niyatāśanaḥ। pañca yajñān avāpnoti kramaśo ye' nukīrtitāḥ॥03-80-99॥

(Now, having gone to Pañcanada, one who is self-controlled and of regulated diet attains, successively, the five sacrifices which are mentioned.)
Then, having gone to Pañcanada, a person who is self-controlled and regulated in diet successively attains the five sacrifices that have been mentioned. (03-80-99)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ भीमायाः स्थानमुत्तमम्। तत्र स्नात्वा तु योन्यां वै नरो भरतसत्तम ॥०३-८०-१००॥
tato gacchet dharmajña bhīmāyāḥ sthānam uttamam। tatra snātvā tu yonyāṃ vai naro bharatasattama ॥03-80-100॥

(Then should go knower of dharma to Bhīmā's excellent place. There having bathed indeed in the stream, indeed man, best of the Bharatas.)
Then the knower of dharma should go to the excellent place of Bhīmā. There, O best of the Bharatas, a man having bathed in the stream, (03-80-100)
देव्याः पुत्रो भवेद्राजंस्तप्तकुण्डलविग्रहः। गवां शतसहस्रस्य फलं चैवाप्नुयान्महत् ॥०३-८०-१०१॥
devyāḥ putro bhaved rājaṃs tapta-kuṇḍala-vigrahaḥ। gavāṃ śata-sahasrasya phalaṃ caivāpnuyān mahat ॥03-80-101॥
[देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the goddess; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; राजं (rājan) - O king; तप्तकुण्डलविग्रहः (tapta-kuṇḍala-vigrahaḥ) - having a form adorned with heated earrings; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; शतसहस्रस्य (śata-sahasrasya) - of a hundred thousand; फलं (phalam) - fruit (result); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - he obtains; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(O king, the son of the goddess should be, having a form adorned with heated earrings; he also indeed obtains the great fruit of a hundred thousand cows.)
O king, one who becomes the son of the goddess, who has a form adorned with heated earrings, surely attains the great merit equal to giving a hundred thousand cows. (03-80-101)
गिरिमुञ्जं समासाद्य त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। पितामहं नमस्कृत्य गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-१०२॥
girimuñjaṁ samāsādya triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। pitāmahaṁ namaskṛtya gosahasraphalaṁ labheta ॥03-80-102॥
[गिरिमुञ्जम् (girimuñjam) - the Muñja grass from the mountain; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - Brahmā (the grandsire); नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed to; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labheta) - would obtain;]
(Having approached the mountain Muñja, renowned in the three worlds, having bowed to the grandsire, one would obtain the fruit of a thousand cows.)
By approaching the Muñja grass on the mountain, renowned in all three worlds, and by bowing to the grandsire, one obtains the fruit equivalent to gifting a thousand cows. (03-80-102)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ विमलं तीर्थमुत्तमम्। अद्यापि यत्र दृश्यन्ते मत्स्याः सौवर्णराजताः ॥०३-८०-१०३॥
tato gacchet dharmajña vimalaṃ tīrtham uttamam। adyāpi yatra dṛśyante matsyāḥ sauvarṇarājatāḥ॥03-80-103॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; विमलम् (vimalaṃ) - pure; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - ford; sacred place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; यत्र (yatra) - where; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; मत्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes; सौवर्णराजताः (sauvarṇarājatāḥ) - golden and silver;]
(Then the knower of dharma should go to the pure, supreme ford, where even today golden and silver fishes are seen.)

तत्र स्नात्वा नरश्रेष्ठ वाजपेयमवाप्नुयात्। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा गच्छेच्च परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८०-१०४॥
tatra snātvā naraśreṣṭha vājapeyam avāpnuyāt। sarvapāpa-viśuddhātmā gacchec ca paramāṃ gatim॥03-80-104॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya (sacrifice); अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - he may obtain; सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpa-viśuddhātmā) - with a self purified from all sins; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he may go; च (ca) - and; परमां (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(There, having bathed, O best of men, he may obtain the Vājapeya (sacrifice); with a self purified from all sins, he may go and the supreme state.)
There, having bathed, O best of men, one may obtain the merit equal to the Vājapeya sacrifice; with a mind purified from all sins, one may reach the highest state. (03-80-104)
ततो गच्छेत मलदां त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुताम्। पश्चिमायां तु सन्ध्यायामुपस्पृश्य यथाविधि ॥०३-८०-१०५॥
tato gacchet maladāṃ triṣu lokeṣu viśrutām। paścimāyāṃ tu sandhyāyām upaspṛśya yathāvidhi॥03-80-105॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; मलदाम् (maladām) - that which removes impurity; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुताम् (viśrutām) - well-known; पश्चिमायाम् (paścimāyām) - in the western; तु (tu) - however; सन्ध्यायाम् (sandhyāyām) - during the twilight; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having purified (oneself by touch of water); यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule;]
(Thereafter, one should go to the purifier of impurities, well-known in the three worlds. However, at the western twilight, having purified oneself according to the rule.)
Afterwards, one should proceed to that which removes impurity, renowned in the three worlds. At the western twilight, having performed purification according to the proper method. (03-80-105)
चरुं नरेन्द्र सप्तार्चेर्यथाशक्ति निवेदयेत्। पितॄणामक्षयं दानं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥०३-८०-१०६॥
caruṃ narendra saptārcer yathāśakti nivedayet। pitṝṇām akṣayaṃ dānaṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ ॥03-80-106॥
[चरुं (caruṃ) - rice-offering; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; सप्तार्चेः (saptārcer) - on the seventh day; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - according to ability; निवेदयेत् (nivedayet) - should offer; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - to the ancestors; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; दानम् (dānam) - gift; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they declare; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(Rice-offering, O king, on the seventh day, according to ability, should offer; to the ancestors, imperishable gift, they declare, the wise.)
O king, the wise declare that an offering of rice to the ancestors on the seventh day, according to one’s ability, is an imperishable gift. (03-80-106)
गवां शतसहस्रेण राजसूयशतेन च। अश्वमेधसहस्रेण श्रेयान्सप्तार्चिषश्चरुः ॥०३-८०-१०७॥
gavāṃ śata-sahasreṇa rājasūya-śatena ca। aśvamedha-sahasreṇa śreyān saptārciṣaś caruḥ॥03-80-107॥
[गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; शतसहस्रेण (śata-sahasreṇa) - with a hundred thousand; राजसूयशतेन (rājasūya-śatena) - with a hundred Rājasūya sacrifices; च (ca) - and; अश्वमेधसहस्रेण (aśvamedha-sahasreṇa) - with a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices; श्रेयान् (śreyān) - superior; सप्तार्चिषः (saptārciṣaḥ) - of seven flames; चरुः (caruḥ) - oblation;]
(Of cows, with a hundred thousand; with a hundred Rājasūya sacrifices, and with a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices, superior is the oblation of seven flames.)
The oblation offered to the seven flames is superior to the gift of a hundred thousand cows, the performance of a hundred Rājasūya sacrifices, and a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices. (03-80-107)
ततो निवृत्तो राजेन्द्र वस्त्रापदमथाविशेत्। अभिगम्य महादेवमश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-१०८॥
tato nivṛtto rājendra vastrāpadam athāviśet | abhigamya mahādevam aśvamedhaphalaṃ labhet ||03-80-108||
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - having returned; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; वस्त्रापदम् (vastrāpadam) - the place for clothes; अथ (atha) - then; आविशेत् (āviśet) - he should enter; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; महादेवं (mahādevam) - Mahādeva; अश्वमेधफलं (aśvamedhaphalam) - the fruit of an aśvamedha sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - he obtains;]
(Then having returned, O king, he should enter the clothing-place; having approached Mahādeva, he obtains the fruit of an aśvamedha sacrifice.)

मणिमन्तं समासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। एकरात्रोषितो राजन्नग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-१०९॥
maṇimantaṃ samāsādya brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। ekarātroṣito rājann agniṣṭomaphalaṃ labheta॥03-80-109॥
[मणिमन्तं (maṇimantam) - Maṇimanta (proper noun; name of a place or person); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate student; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected; attentive; एकरात्रोषितः (ekarātra-uṣitaḥ) - having dwelt one night; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭoma-phalam) - the fruit (result) of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - may obtain;]
(Maṇimanta having approached, the celibate student collected; having dwelt for one night, O king, the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice may obtain.)
O king, a collected celibate student, upon approaching Maṇimanta and spending one night there, may obtain the fruit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-80-109)
अथ गच्छेत राजेन्द्र देविकां लोकविश्रुताम्। प्रसूतिर्यत्र विप्राणां श्रूयते भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८०-११०॥
atha gacchet rājendra devikāṃ lokaviśrutām। prasūtiryatra viprāṇāṃ śrūyate bharatarṣabha ॥03-80-110॥
[अथ (atha) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; देविकाम् (devikām) - Devikā (name of a sacred place); लोकविश्रुताम् (lokaviśrutām) - world-renowned; प्रसूतिः (prasūtiḥ) - origin; यत्र (yatra) - where; विप्राणाम् (viprāṇām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharata dynasty;]
(Then one should go, O best of kings, to Devikā, world-renowned; where the origin of the Brāhmaṇas is heard, O bull of the Bharata dynasty.)
Then, O best of kings, you should go to Devikā, which is world-renowned, where the origin of the Brāhmaṇas is said to be, O bull among the Bharatas. (03-80-110)
त्रिशूलपाणेः स्थानं च त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। देविकायां नरः स्नात्वा समभ्यर्च्य महेश्वरम् ॥०३-८०-१११॥
triśūlapāṇeḥ sthānaṃ ca triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। devikāyāṃ naraḥ snātvā samabhyarcya maheśvaram॥03-80-111॥
[त्रिशूलपाणेः (triśūlapāṇeḥ) - of the trident-holder (Śiva); स्थानं (sthānam) - abode; place; च (ca) - and; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - famous; renowned; देविकायां (devikāyām) - in Devikā (river/site); नः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; समभ्यर्च्य (samabhyarcya) - having worshipped; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - Maheśvara (Śiva);]
(The abode of the trident-holder and (is) famous in the three worlds. In Devikā, having bathed, a man, having worshipped Maheśvara.)
The place of the trident-holder (Śiva) is renowned in the three worlds. A man who, after bathing in the Devikā, worships Maheśvara (Śiva), (attains merit). (03-80-111)
यथाशक्ति चरुं तत्र निवेद्य भरतर्षभ। सर्वकामसमृद्धस्य यज्ञस्य लभते फलम् ॥०३-८०-११२॥
yathāśakti caruṃ tatra nivedya bharatarṣabha। sarvakāmasamṛddhasya yajñasya labhate phalam ॥03-80-112॥
[यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - according to ability; चरुं (caruṃ) - oblation; तत्र (tatra) - there; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having offered; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; सर्वकामसमृद्धस्य (sarvakāmasamṛddhasya) - of one whose all desires are fulfilled; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; लभते (labhate) - obtains; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(According to ability oblation there having offered, O bull among the Bharatas, of all-desire-fulfilled sacrifice obtains fruit.)
O best of the Bharatas, having offered the oblation there according to one’s ability, one obtains the fruit of a sacrifice by which all desires are fulfilled. (03-80-112)
कामाख्यं तत्र रुद्रस्य तीर्थं देवर्षिसेवितम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरः क्षिप्रं सिद्धिमाप्नोति भारत ॥०३-८०-११३॥
kāmākhyaṃ tatra rudrasya tīrthaṃ devarṣisevitam। tatra snātvā naraḥ kṣipraṃ siddhimāpnoti bhārata॥03-80-113॥
[कामाख्यं (kāmākhyam) - Kāmākhyā (a sacred place); तत्र (tatra) - there; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - holy place; देवर्षिसेवितम् (devarṣisevitam) - attended by divine sages; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata);]
(Kāmākhyā there of Rudra holy place attended by divine sages; there having bathed man quickly perfection obtains, O Bhārata.)
Kāmākhyā, there is the holy place of Rudra, attended by divine sages. There, a man who has bathed quickly attains perfection, O Bhārata. (03-80-113)
यजनं याजनं गत्वा तथैव ब्रह्मवालुकाम्। पुष्पन्यास उपस्पृश्य न शोचेन्मरणं ततः ॥०३-८०-११४॥
yajanaṃ yājanaṃ gatvā tathaiva brahmavālukām। puṣpanyāsa upaspṛśya na śocen maraṇaṃ tataḥ ॥03-80-114॥
[यजनं (yajanaṃ) - sacrifice; offering; याजनं (yājanaṃ) - causing to perform sacrifice; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; ब्रह्मवालुकाम् (brahmavālukām) - the sacred sand (brahma-sand); पुष्पन्यास (puṣpanyāsa) - placing of flowers; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (purifying oneself); न (na) - not; शोचेत् (śocet) - should grieve; मरणं (maraṇaṃ) - death; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter;]
(Sacrifice, causing sacrifice, having gone likewise to the brahma sand, placing flowers, having touched (purifying), should not grieve death thereafter.)
After performing sacrifice or causing sacrifice, and having gone likewise to the sacred sand, placing flowers and having purified oneself, one should not grieve death thereafter. (03-80-114)
अर्धयोजनविस्तारां पञ्चयोजनमायताम्। एतावद्देविकामाहुः पुण्यां देवर्षिसेविताम् ॥०३-८०-११५॥
ardhayōjanavistārām pañcayōjanamāyatām। etāvaddevikāmāhuḥ puṇyāṃ devarṣisevitām ॥03-80-115॥
[अर्धयोजन (ardhayōjana) - half-yojana; विस्ताराम् (vistārām) - in width; पञ्चयोजन (pañcayōjana) - five-yojana; आयताम् (āyatām) - in length; एतावद् (etāvad) - of such extent; देविकाम् (devikām) - called Devikā; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; पुण्यां (puṇyām) - holy; देवर्षि (devarṣi) - by divine sages; सेविताम् (sevitām) - frequented;]
(Half-yojana in width, five-yojana in length, of such extent called Devikā, they say, holy, frequented by divine sages.)
They say that Devikā, holy and frequented by divine sages, is half a yojana wide and five yojanas long. (03-80-115)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ दीर्घसत्रं यथाक्रमम्। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ॥ दीर्घसत्रमुपासन्ते दक्षिणाभिर्यतव्रताः ॥०३-८०-११६॥
tato gacchet dharmajña dīrghasatraṃ yathākramam। yatra brahmādayo devāḥ siddhāś ca paramarṣayaḥ॥ dīrghasatram upāsante dakṣiṇābhir yatavratāḥ॥03-80-116॥

(Then, should go, the knower of dharma, to the long sacrifice, according to order, where Brahma and others, gods, attained ones and supreme sages, the long sacrifice worship with gifts, self-restrained in vow.)
Then, the knower of dharma should proceed, in the proper order, to the long-lasting sacrifice where Brahma and the other gods, Siddhas, and supreme sages worship the sacrifice with offerings, steadfast in their vows. (3-80-116)
गमनादेव राजेन्द्र दीर्घसत्रमरिंदम। राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८०-११७॥
gamanādeva rājendra dīrghasatramariṁdama। rājasūyāśvamedhābhyāṁ phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ॥03-80-117॥
[गमनात् एव (gamanāt eva) - from the act of going alone; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; दीर्घसत्रम् (dīrghasatram) - a long sacrifice; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies; राजसूय-अश्वमेधाभ्यां (rājasūya-aśvamedhābhyāṁ) - with the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices; फलं (phalam) - fruit; reward; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(From going alone, O king, a long sacrifice, O subduer of enemies, with the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices, the fruit attains a man.)
O king, merely by going (there), a man attains the reward of performing the long Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices, O subduer of enemies. (03-80-117)
ततो विनशनं गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः। गच्छत्यन्तर्हिता यत्र मरुपृष्ठे सरस्वती ॥ चमसे च शिवोद्भेदे नागोद्भेदे च दृश्यते ॥०३-८०-११८॥
tato vinaśanaṁ gacche nniyato niyatāśanaḥ। gacchatyantarhitā yatra marupraṣṭhe sarasvatī॥ camase ca śivod bhede nāgod bhede ca dṛśyate॥03-80-118॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; विनशनम् (vinaśanam) - Vinaśana (a place's name); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - with regulated diet; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; अन्तर्हिता (antarhitā) - disappeared; यत्र (yatra) - where; मरुपृष्ठे (marupraṣṭhe) - on the desert ground; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvatī (the river); चमसे (camase) - at Camasa (a place); च (ca) - and; शिवोद्भेदे (śivod bhede) - at Śivodbheda (a place); नागोद्भेदे (nāgod bhede) - at Nāgodbheda (a place); च (ca) - and; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(From there, one should go to Vinaśana, self-controlled, with regulated diet. Where the Sarasvatī, having disappeared, goes on the desert ground. At Camasa and at Śivodbheda and Nāgodbheda she is seen.)
From there, one should proceed to Vinaśana, being self-controlled and regulated in food. There, on the desert plain, the Sarasvatī disappears. She is seen at Camasa, Śivodbheda, and Nāgodbheda. (03-80-118)
स्नात्वा च चमसोद्भेदे अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत्। शिवोद्भेदे नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-११९॥
snātvā ca camasodbhēdē agniṣṭōmaphalaṁ labhēt। śivōdbhēdē naraḥ snātvā gōsahasraphalaṁ labhēt॥03-80-119॥
[स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; च (ca) - and; चमसोद्भेदे (camasodbhēdē) - at the division of Camasa (vessel); अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭōmaphalaṁ) - fruit/result of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labhēt) - one obtains; शिवोद्भेदे (śivōdbhēdē) - at the Śiva division; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (gōsahasraphalaṁ) - fruit/result of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhēt) - one obtains;]
(Having bathed, and at Camasa division, the fruit of Agniṣṭoma one obtains. At Śiva division, man having bathed, the fruit of a thousand cows one obtains. (03-80-119))
By bathing at the Camasa division, one obtains the fruit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; by bathing at the Śiva division, a man gains the merit equal to donating a thousand cows. (03-80-119)
नागोद्भेदे नरः स्नात्वा नागलोकमवाप्नुयात्। शशयानं च राजेन्द्र तीर्थमासाद्य दुर्लभम् ॥ शशरूपप्रतिच्छन्नाः पुष्करा यत्र भारत ॥०३-८०-१२०॥
nāgodbhēdē naraḥ snātvā nāgalōkam avāpnuyāt। śaśayānaṃ ca rājendra tīrtham āsādya durlabham ॥ śaśarūpapraticchannāḥ puṣkarā yatra bhārata ॥03-80-120॥
[नागोद्भेदे (nāgodbhēdē) - at Nāgodbhēda; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नागलोकम् (nāgalōkam) - the world of the Nāgas; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain; शशयानं (śaśayānam) - Śaśayāna (name of the place); च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; शशरूपप्रतिच्छन्नाः (śaśarūpapraticchannāḥ) - covered by forms of hares; पुष्कराः (puṣkarāḥ) - lakes; यत्र (yatra) - where; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(At Nāgodbhēda, a man having bathed may attain the world of the Nāgas. And, O king, reaching the difficult-to-obtain sacred place Śaśayāna—where lakes covered by the forms of hares are found, O Bhārata.)
A man who bathes at Nāgodbhēda attains the realm of the Nāgas. And, O king, upon reaching the rare holy place called Śaśayāna—where there are lakes concealed by hare-like forms, O Bhārata—(03-80-120)
सरस्वत्यां महाराज अनु संवत्सरं हि ते। स्नायन्ते भरतश्रेष्ठ वृत्तां वै कार्त्तिकीं सदा ॥०३-८०-१२१॥
saravastīyām mahārāja anu samvatsaraṃ hi te। snāyante bharataśreṣṭha vṛttāṃ vai kārttikīṃ sadā ॥03-80-121॥
[सरस्वत्याम् (saravastīyām) - in the Sarasvati (river); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; अनु (anu) - after; संवत्सरम् (samvatsaram) - the year; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; स्नायन्ते (snāyante) - bathe; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; वृत्तां (vṛttām) - occurred, performed; वै (vai) - indeed; कार्त्तिकीं (kārttikīṃ) - (the month) Kārttikī; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(In the Sarasvati, O great king, after the year indeed, they bathe, O best of the Bharatas, having performed (the rites) indeed, Kārttikī, always.)
O great king, after the year has passed, they always bathe in the Sarasvati river in the month of Kārttikī after performing the prescribed rites, O best of the Bharatas. (03-80-121)
तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र द्योतते शशिवत्सदा। गोसहस्रफलं चैव प्राप्नुयाद्भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८०-१२२॥
tatra snātvā naravyāghra dyotate śaśivat sadā। gosahasraphalaṃ caiva prāpnuyād bharatarṣabha॥03-80-122॥

(There having bathed, tiger among men, one shines like the moon always. The fruit of a thousand cows and indeed one would obtain, bull among the Bharatas.)
There, having bathed, O tiger among men, one always shines like the moon and indeed obtains the merit equal to gifting a thousand cows, O bull among the Bharatas. (03-80-122)
कुमारकोटिमासाद्य नियतः कुरुनन्दन। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत पितृदेवार्चने रतः ॥ गवामयमवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८०-१२३॥
kumārakoṭim āsādya niyataḥ kurunandana। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta pitṛdevārcane rataḥ॥ gavām ayam avāpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet॥03-80-123॥
[कुमारकोटिम् (kumārakoṭim) - Kumārakoṭi (name of a place); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; arrived at; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; disciplined; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus (Arjuna); तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - ablution; ceremonial bath; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should do; पितृदेव (pitṛdeva) - to ancestors and gods; अर्चने (arcane) - in worship; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; अयम् (ayam) - he; this one; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; gains; कुलम् (kulam) - family; lineage; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; truly; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - lifts up; raises; rescues;]
(Having reached Kumārakoṭi, self-controlled O joy of the Kurus, there should do ablution, engaged in the worship of ancestors and gods. Of cows, he obtains; and indeed, (his) family he raises.)
O joy of the Kurus, having reached Kumārakoṭi with self-discipline, one should perform the ceremonial bath there, being devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods. He attains cows (wealth) and uplifts his family. (03-80-123)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ रुद्रकोटिं समाहितः। पुरा यत्र महाराज ऋषिकोटिः समाहिता ॥ प्रहर्षेण च संविष्टा देवदर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥०३-८०-१२४॥
tato gacchet dharmajña rudrakoṭiṁ samāhitaḥ. purā yatra mahārāja ṛṣikoṭiḥ samāhitā ॥ praharṣeṇa ca saṁviṣṭā devadarśanakāṅkṣayā ॥03-80-124॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; रुद्रकोटिं (rudrakoṭiṁ) - to Rudrakoti; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected; focused; पुरा (purā) - formerly; यत्र (yatra) - where; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ऋषिकोटिः (ṛṣikoṭiḥ) - Ṛṣikoṭi; समाहिता (samāhitā) - collected; focused; प्रहर्षेण (praharṣeṇa) - with delight; च (ca) - and; संविष्टा (saṁviṣṭā) - seated; देवदर्शनकाङ्क्षया (devadarśanakāṅkṣayā) - with longing for seeing the gods;]
(Then, should go, the knower of dharma, to Rudrakoti, focused. Formerly, where, O great king, Ṛṣikoṭi, focused, with delight and seated, with longing for seeing the gods.)
Then, O great king, the knower of dharma should proceed with focus to Rudrakoti, where, in ancient times, Ṛṣikoṭi was seated in concentrated delight, longing to behold the gods. (03-80-124)
अहं पूर्वमहं पूर्वं द्रक्ष्यामि वृषभध्वजम्। एवं सम्प्रस्थिता राजन्नृषयः किल भारत ॥०३-८०-१२५॥
ahaṃ pūrvam ahaṃ pūrvaṃ drakṣyāmi vṛṣabhadhvajam। evaṃ samprasthitā rājann ṛṣayaḥ kila bhārata॥03-80-125॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - shall see; वृषभध्वजम् (vṛṣabhadhvajam) - Bull-bannered (Śiva); एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्प्रस्थिता (samprasthitāḥ) - set out; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; किल (kila) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(I first, I first, shall see the Bull-bannered. Thus set out, O king, the sages indeed, O Bhārata.)
“I will see the Bull-bannered One first! I will see Him first!” Saying thus, O king, the sages set out, indeed, O Bhārata. (03-80-125)
ततो योगेष्वरेणापि योगमास्थाय भूपते। तेषां मन्युप्रणाशार्थमृषीणां भावितात्मनाम् ॥०३-८०-१२६॥
tato yogeśvareṇāpi yogam āsthāya bhūpate। teṣāṃ manyupraṇāśārtham ṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥03-80-126॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; योगेश्वरेण (yogeśvareṇa) - by the lord of yoga; अपि (api) - also; योगम् (yogam) - yoga (spiritual discipline); आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having adopted; भूपते (bhūpate) - O king; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; मन्युप्रणाशार्थम् (manyupraṇāśārtham) - for the purpose of destruction of anger; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - whose souls are purified;]
(Then, by the lord of yoga also, having adopted yoga, O king, for the purpose of destroying the anger of those sages whose souls are purified.)
Then, O king, the lord of yoga too, adopting yoga, acted to destroy the anger of those sages who were purified in soul. (03-80-126)
सृष्टा कोटिस्तु रुद्राणामृषीणामग्रतः स्थिता। मया पूर्वतरं दृष्ट इति ते मेनिरे पृथक् ॥०३-८०-१२७॥
sṛṣṭā koṭistu rudrāṇām ṛṣīṇām agrataḥ sthitā। mayā pūrvataraṃ dṛṣṭa iti te menire pṛthak ॥03-80-127॥
[सृष्टा (sṛṣṭā) - created; (feminine singular nominative); कोटिः (koṭiḥ) - a crore; ten million; तु (tu) - but; रुद्राणाम् (rudrāṇām) - of Rudras; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; before; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - stood; (feminine plural nominative); मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वतरम् (pūrvataram) - previously; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; इति (iti) - thus; (end-quote marker); ते (te) - they; मेनिरे (menire) - thought; considered; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; differently;]
(Created a crore but of Rudras of sages before stood; by me previously seen thus they considered separately.)
But a crore of Rudras, standing in front of the sages, were created; they considered, "Previously, these were seen by me separately." (03-80-127)
तेषां तुष्टो महादेव ऋषीणामुग्रतेजसाम्। भक्त्या परमया राजन्वरं तेषां प्रदिष्टवान् ॥ अद्य प्रभृति युष्माकं धर्मवृद्धिर्भविष्यति ॥०३-८०-१२८॥
teṣāṃ tuṣṭo mahādeva ṛṣīṇām ugratejasām। bhaktyā paramayā rājan varaṃ teṣāṃ pradiṣṭavān॥ adya prabhṛti yuṣmākaṃ dharmavṛddhir bhaviṣyati॥03-80-128॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - being pleased; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of sages; उग्रतेजसाम् (ugratejasām) - of fierce energy; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वरम् (varam) - boon; तेषां (teṣām) - to them; प्रदिष्टवान् (pradiṣṭavān) - granted; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - of you (all); धर्मवृद्धिः (dharmavṛddhiḥ) - increase of righteousness; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Of them, being pleased, Mahādeva of sages of fierce energy, with supreme devotion, O king, boon to them granted. Today, from now on, of you all, increase of righteousness will be. (03-80-128))
O king, being pleased with the supreme devotion of those sages of fierce energy, Mahādeva granted them a boon. From today onwards, there will be an increase of righteousness among you. (03-80-128)
तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र रुद्रकोट्यां नरः शुचिः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८०-१२९॥
tatra snātvā naravyāghra rudrakoṭyāṃ naraḥ śuciḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet॥03-80-129॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; रुद्रकोट्यां (rudrakoṭyāṃ) - in Rudrakoṭi; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the fruit of the Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; कुलम् (kulam) - family; च एव (ca eva) - and also; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - causes to be uplifted;]
(There having bathed, O tiger among men, in Rudrakoṭi, a pure man obtains the fruit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice, and also causes his family to be uplifted.)
There, O tiger among men, whoever bathes in Rudrakoṭi with a pure heart attains the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and also uplifts his family. (03-80-129)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र सङ्गमं लोकविश्रुतम्। सरस्वत्या महापुण्यमुपासन्ते जनार्दनम् ॥०३-८०-१३०॥
tato gacchet rājendra saṅgamaṃ lokaviśrutam। sarasvatyā mahāpuṇyam upāsante janārdanam ॥03-80-130॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सङ्गमम् (saṅgamam) - the confluence; लोकविश्रुतम् (lokaviśrutam) - world-renowned; सरस्वत्या (sarasvatyā) - of Sarasvatī; महापुण्यम् (mahāpuṇyam) - greatly meritorious; उपासन्ते (upāsante) - they worship; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janārdana (Viṣṇu);]
(Then should go O king, the confluence world-renowned, of Sarasvatī greatly meritorious, (there) they worship Janārdana.)
Then, O king, one should go to the renowned confluence of the Sarasvatī, which is highly meritorious, where Janārdana is worshipped. (03-80-130)
यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा ऋषयः सिद्धचारणाः। अभिगच्छन्ति राजेन्द्र चैत्रशुक्लचतुर्दशीम् ॥०३-८०-१३१॥
yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ। abhigacchanti rājendra caitraśuklacaturdaśīm॥03-80-131॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahmā and others; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; सिद्धचारणाः (siddhacāraṇāḥ) - perfected beings and celestial bards; अभिगच्छन्ति (abhigacchanti) - approach; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; चैत्रशुक्लचतुर्दशीम् (caitraśuklacaturdaśīm) - the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra; ॥०३-८०-१३१॥ (॥03-80-131॥) -;]
(Where Brahmā and others, gods, sages, perfected beings and celestial bards approach, O king, the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra.)
O King, the fourteenth day of the bright half of Caitra is that occasion to which Brahmā and others, gods, sages, perfected beings, and celestial bards come. (03-80-131)
तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र विन्देद्बहु सुवर्णकम्। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८०-१३२॥
tatra snātvā naravyāghra vindedbahu suvarṇakam। sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā brahmalokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-80-132॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; विन्देत् (vindet) - one obtains; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold; सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā) - one whose self is purified from all sins; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - the world of Brahma; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(There, having bathed, O tiger among men, one obtains much gold. One whose self is purified from all sins goes also to the world of Brahma.)
There, having bathed, O best of men, one may find much gold; and one whose soul is purified from all sins attains to the world of Brahma. (03-80-132)
ऋषीणां यत्र सत्राणि समाप्तानि नराधिप। सत्रावसानमासाद्य गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८०-१३३॥
ṛṣīṇāṃ yatra satrāṇi samāptāni narādhipa। satrāvasānam āsādya go-sahasra-phalaṃ labhet॥03-80-133॥
[ऋषीणां (ṛṣīṇāṃ) - of the sages; यत्र (yatra) - where; सत्राणि (satrāṇi) - sacrificial sessions; समाप्तानि (samāptāni) - completed; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; सत्रावसानम् (satrāvasānam) - end of the sacrificial session; आसाद्य (āsādya) - reaching; गो (go) - cow; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; लभेत् (labhet) - one attains;]
(O lord of men, where the sacrificial sessions of the sages are completed, having reached the end of the sacrificial session, one attains the fruit of a thousand cows.)
O king, where the sages' sacrificial sessions have concluded, by reaching the end of such a session, one obtains the merit equal to that of a thousand cows. (03-80-133)
