ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र कुरुक्षेत्रमभिष्टुतम्। पापेभ्यो विप्रमुच्यन्ते तद्गताः सर्वजन्तवः ॥०३-८१-१॥
tato gacchet rājendra kurukṣetram abhiṣṭutam। pāpebhyo vipramucyante tadgatāḥ sarvajantavaḥ॥03-81-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; कुरुक्षेत्रम् (kurukṣetram) - Kurukshetra; अभिष्टुतम् (abhiṣṭutam) - praised; पापेभ्यः (pāpebhyaḥ) - from sins; विप्रमुच्यन्ते (vipramucyante) - are completely released; तत्-गताः (tat-gatāḥ) - those who have gone there; सर्व-जन्तवः (sarva-jantavaḥ) - all beings;]
(Then one should go, O king, to Kurukshetra praised; from sins are completely released those who have gone there, all beings.)
Then, O king, one should go to Kurukshetra, which is praised; all beings who have gone there are completely released from sins. (03-81-1)
कुरुक्षेत्रं गमिष्यामि कुरुक्षेत्रे वसाम्यहम्। य एवं सततं ब्रूयात्सोऽपि पापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८१-२॥
kurukṣetraṁ gamiṣyāmi kurukṣetre vasāmyaham। ya evaṁ satataṁ brūyāt so'pi pāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-81-2॥
[कुरुक्षेत्रं (kurukṣetram) - Kurukṣetra; (the sacred region); गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; I will go; कुरुक्षेत्रे (kurukṣetre) - in Kurukṣetra; वसामि (vasāmi) - I dwell; I reside; अहम् (aham) - I; यः (yaḥ) - who; एवम् (evam) - thus; in this manner; सततम् (satatam) - always; continually; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should say; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; even; पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - from sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released; is freed;]
(Kurukṣetra I will go, in Kurukṣetra I reside I; who thus always should say, he also from sins is released.)
If a person says always, "I will go to Kurukṣetra, I live in Kurukṣetra," then he too is freed from sins. (03-81-2)
तत्र मासं वसेद्वीर सरस्वत्यां युधिष्ठिर। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा ऋषयः सिद्धचारणाः ॥०३-८१-३॥
tatra māsaṃ vased vīra sarasvatyāṃ yudhiṣṭhira. yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ ॥03-81-3॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मासम् (māsam) - a month; वसेत् (vaset) - should stay; वीर (vīra) - O hero; सरस्वत्याम् (sarasvatyām) - on Sarasvatī (river); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahmā and others; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; सिद्धचारणाः (siddhacāraṇāḥ) - perfected beings and celestial bards;]
(There a month should stay, O hero, on Sarasvatī, O Yudhiṣṭhira; where Brahmā and others, gods, sages, perfected beings, and celestial bards (are).)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, O hero, you should stay for a month there on the Sarasvatī River, where Brahmā and other gods, sages, perfected beings, and celestial bards reside. (03-81-3)
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो यक्षाः पन्नगाश्च महीपते। ब्रह्मक्षेत्रं महापुण्यमभिगच्छन्ति भारत ॥०३-८१-४॥
gandharvāpsaraso yakṣāḥ pannagāś ca mahīpate। brahmakṣetraṃ mahāpuṇyam abhigacchanti bhārata ॥03-81-4॥
[गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - celestial musicians;​ अप्सरसः (apsarasaḥ) - celestial nymphs;​ यक्षाः (yakṣāḥ) - nature-spirits;​ पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents;​ च (ca) - and;​ महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;​ ब्रह्मक्षेत्रम् (brahmakṣetram) - Brahma-kṣetra;​ महापुण्यम् (mahāpuṇyam) - greatly meritorious;​ अभिगच्छन्ति (abhigacchanti) - approach;​ भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;​;]
(Celestial musicians, celestial nymphs, nature-spirits, and serpents and, O king, the Brahma-kṣetra, greatly meritorious, approach, O descendant of Bharata.)
O king, celestial musicians, nymphs, yakṣas, and serpents all approach the highly meritorious Brahma-kṣetra, O descendant of Bharata. (03-81-4)
मनसाप्यभिकामस्य कुरुक्षेत्रं युधिष्ठिर। पापानि विप्रणश्यन्ति ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-५॥
manasāpyabhikāmasya kurukṣetraṃ yudhiṣṭhira। pāpāni vipraṇaśyanti brahmalokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-81-5॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by mind; अपि (api) - even; अभिकामस्य (abhikāmasya) - of one desiring; कुरुक्षेत्रं (kurukṣetram) - Kurukshetra; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhishthira; पापानि (pāpāni) - sins; विप्रणश्यन्ति (vipraṇaśyanti) - are completely destroyed; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokam) - Brahma's world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(By mind even of one desiring Kurukshetra, O Yudhishthira, sins are completely destroyed and Brahma's world he goes to.)
O Yudhishthira, even one who desires Kurukshetra in his mind, his sins are completely destroyed and he attains the world of Brahma. (03-81-5)
गत्वा हि श्रद्धया युक्तः कुरुक्षेत्रं कुरूद्वह। राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८१-६॥
gatvā hi śraddhayā yuktaḥ kurukṣetraṃ kurūdvaha। rājasūyāśvamedhābhyāṃ phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-81-6॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - with faith; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; कुरुक्षेत्रं (kurukṣetram) - Kurukṣetra; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus; राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां (rājasūyāśvamedhābhyām) - by (the merits of) the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(Having gone indeed with faith endowed to Kurukṣetra, O best of the Kurus, a man attains the fruit of the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices.)
O best of the Kurus, a man who goes to Kurukṣetra with faith attains the merit of both the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. (03-81-6)
ततो मचक्रुकं राजन्द्वारपालं महाबलम्। यक्षं समभिवाद्यैव गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-७॥
tato macakrukaṃ rājandvārapālaṃ mahābalam। yakṣaṃ samabhivādyaiva gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-81-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मचक्रुकम् (macakrukaṃ) - Macakruka (proper noun, name); राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्वारपालम् (dvārapālam) - doorkeeper; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - of great strength; यक्षम् (yakṣam) - yakṣa (nature-spirit, supernatural being); समभिवाद्य (samabhivādyā) - having saluted; एव (eva) - indeed; गोसहस्रफलम् (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit (result) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(Then Macakruka, O king, the doorkeeper of great strength, the yakṣa, having saluted indeed, the result of a thousand cows one obtains.)
Then, O king, if one salutes Macakruka, the mighty yakṣa doorkeeper, he indeed obtains the merit equivalent to donating a thousand cows. (03-81-7)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ विष्णोः स्थानमनुत्तमम्। सततं नाम राजेन्द्र यत्र संनिहितो हरिः ॥०३-८१-८॥
tato gacchet dharmajña viṣṇoḥ sthānam-anuttamam। satataṃ nāma rājendra yatra saṃnihito hariḥ॥03-81-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - the unsurpassed; सततम् (satatam) - always; नाम (nāma) - by name; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O King; यत्र (yatra) - where; संनिहितः (saṃnihitaḥ) - present; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu);]
(Thereafter he should go, knower of dharma, to Viṣṇu's abode, the unsurpassed; always by name, O King, where present is Hari.)
Thereafter, O King, the knower of dharma should go to the unsurpassed abode of Viṣṇu, called Satata, where Hari is always present. (03-81-8)
तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च त्रिलोकप्रभवं हरिम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति विष्णुलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-९॥
tatra snātvārcayitvā ca trilokaprabhavaṃ harim। aśvamedhamavāpnoti viṣṇulokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-81-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; त्रिलोकप्रभवम् (trilokaprabhavam) - origin of the three worlds; हरिम् (harim) - Hari (Viṣṇu); अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; विष्णुलोकं (viṣṇulokaṃ) - the world of Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(There, having bathed and having worshipped the origin of the three worlds, Hari, one attains the aśvamedha and goes to the world of Viṣṇu.)
There, after bathing and worshipping Hari, the origin of the three worlds, one attains the merit of performing an aśvamedha and reaches the world of Viṣṇu. (03-81-9)
ततः पारिप्लवं गच्छेत्तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८१-१०॥
tataḥ pāriplavaṃ gacchet tīrthaṃ trailokya-viśrutam। agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṃ phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-81-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पारिप्लवं (pāriplavam) - Pāriplava (name of a tīrtha); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred ford; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokya-viśrutam) - famous in the three worlds; अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां (agniṣṭomātirātrābhyām) - by (performing) Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices; फलं (phalam) - fruit; result; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(Then, to Pāriplava, (one) should go, to the śacred ford, famous in the three worlds; by (the merit of performing) Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices, the fruit, obtains, a man.)
Then he should go to Pāriplava, the sacred ford renowned in the three worlds; a man obtains the fruit of both Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices. (03-81-10)
पृथिव्यास्तीर्थमासाद्य गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। ततः शालूकिनीं गत्वा तीर्थसेवी नराधिप ॥दशाश्वमेधिके स्नात्वा तदेव लभते फलम् ॥०३-८१-११॥
pṛthivyās tīrtham āsādya go-sahasra-phalaṃ labhet। tataḥ śālūkinīṃ gatvā tīrtha-sevī narādhipa ॥ daśāśvamedhike snātvā tad eva labhate phalam ॥03-81-11॥
[पृथिव्याः (pṛthivyāḥ) - of the earth; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; गो (go) - cows; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शालूकिनीं (śālūkinīṃ) - Śālūkinī (name of a river or place); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तीर्थसेवी (tīrtha-sevī) - one who serves the holy place; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king; दशाश्वमेधिके (daśāśvamedhike) - at the ten Aśvamedha (sacrifice, or place where ten Aśvamedha sacrifices were done); स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तद् (tad) - that; एव (eva) - only; लभते (labhate) - obtains; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(Having reached the sacred place on earth, one obtains the fruit of a thousand cows. Then, having gone to Śālūkinī, the king, serving the holy place, having bathed at the place of ten Aśvamedha-s, obtains that very fruit.)
By reaching the holy site on earth, one attains the merit equal to that of donating a thousand cows. Then, after going to Śālūkinī, the king who undertakes the observance of holy places gains that very merit by bathing at the site of the ten Aśvamedha sacrifices. (03-81-11)
सर्पदर्वीं समासाद्य नागानां तीर्थमुत्तमम्। अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति नागलोकं च विन्दति ॥०३-८१-१२॥
sarpadarvīṃ samāsādya nāgānāṃ tīrtham uttamam। agniṣṭomam avāpnoti nāgalokaṃ ca vindati॥03-81-12॥
[सर्पदर्वीं (sarpadarvīṃ) - snake-censer; (ritual vessel for serpents;) समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having obtained; नागानां (nāgānāṃ) - of the nāgas; (serpents;) तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - agniṣṭoma sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; नागलोकम् (nāgalokam) - world of the nāgas; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - finds;]
(Having obtained the snake-censer, the excellent sacred place of the nāgas, (one) obtains the agniṣṭoma sacrifice and finds the world of the nāgas.)
By approaching the snake-censer, the most excellent pilgrimage site of the nāgas, a person attains the merit of the agniṣṭoma sacrifice and gains the world of the nāgas. (03-81-12)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ द्वारपालं तरन्तुकम्। तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-१३॥
tato gacchet dharmajña dvārapālaṃ tarantukam। tatroṣya rajanīmekāṃ gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-81-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; द्वारपालम् (dvārapālam) - gatekeeper; तरन्तुकम् (tarantukam) - named Tarantuka; तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having spent (the night); रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit equal to a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - he obtains;]
(Then, the knower of dharma should go to the gatekeeper named Tarantuka. Having spent one night there, he obtains the fruit equal to a thousand cows. (03-81-13))
Then, the knower of dharma should approach the gatekeeper named Tarantuka. After spending one night there, he attains a reward equivalent to offering a thousand cows. (03-81-13)
ततः पञ्चनदं गत्वा नियतो नियताशनः। कोटितीर्थमुपस्पृश्य हयमेधफलं लभेत् ॥ अश्विनोस्तीर्थमासाद्य रूपवानभिजायते ॥०३-८१-१४॥
tataḥ pañcanadaṃ gatvā niyato niyatāśanaḥ। koṭitīrtham upaspṛśya hayamedhaphalaṃ labhet॥ aśvinos tīrtham āsādya rūpavān abhijāyate॥03-81-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पञ्चनदं (pañcanadam) - to Pañcanada (the land of five rivers); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - restrained in food; कोटितीर्थम् (koṭitīrtham) - Koṭitīrtha (name of a sacred place); उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (having bathed or performed rites); हयमेधफलं (hayamedhaphalam) - the fruit of a horse sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains; अश्विनोः (aśvinoḥ) - of the Aśvins; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - handsome; अभिजायते (abhijāyate) - is born (becomes);]
(Then, having gone to Pañcanada, self-controlled, restrained in food, having touched Koṭitīrtha, one obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice. Having reached the sacred place of the Aśvins, one becomes handsome.)
Thus, by proceeding to Pañcanada with self-restraint and controlled diet, and having bathed at Koṭitīrtha, one attains the merit of performing a horse sacrifice. By reaching the sacred place of the Aśvins, one becomes handsome. (03-81-14)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ वाराहं तीर्थमुत्तमम्। विष्णुर्वाराहरूपेण पूर्वं यत्र स्थितोऽभवत् ॥ तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-१५॥
tato gacchet dharmajña vārāhaṁ tīrthamuttamam। viṣṇur vārāharūpeṇa pūrvaṁ yatra sthito’bhavat॥ tatra snātvā naravyāghra agniṣṭomapPhalaṁ labhet॥03-81-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; वाराहं (vārāham) - Varaha (the boar); तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; वाराहरूपेण (vārāharūpeṇa) - in the form of a boar; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; यत्र (yatra) - where; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭomaphalaṁ) - fruit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(From there, one should go, knower of dharma, to the excellent Varaha holy place. Viṣṇu in the form of a boar formerly where stood became. There, having bathed, tiger among men, the fruit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice one obtains. (03-81-15))
From there, O knower of dharma, you should go to the excellent Varaha holy place. It is where Viṣṇu once took his stand in the form of the boar. There, O tiger among men, by bathing, one attains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-15)
ततो जयन्त्या राजेन्द्र सोमतीर्थं समाविशेत्। स्नात्वा फलमवाप्नोति राजसूयस्य मानवः ॥०३-८१-१६॥
tato jayantyā rājendra somatīrthaṃ samāviśet। snātvā phalam avāpnoti rājasūyasya mānavaḥ॥03-81-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; जयन्त्या (jayantyā) - by Jayantyā (on the victorious day); राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सोमतीर्थम् (somatīrtham) - Soma Tirtha (holy place of Soma); समाविशेत् (samāviśet) - one should enter; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; राजसूयस्य (rājasūyasya) - of the Rājasūya (sacrifice); मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(Thereafter, by Jayantyā, O king, Soma Tirtha one should enter. Having bathed, the man obtains the fruit of the Rājasūya sacrifice.)
Thereafter, O king, on Jayantyā, one should enter the Soma Tirtha; and having bathed, a man obtains the merit of the Rājasūya sacrifice. (03-81-16)
एकहंसे नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। कृतशौचं समासाद्य तीर्थसेवी कुरूद्वह ॥ पुण्डरीकमवाप्नोति कृतशौचो भवेन्नरः ॥०३-८१-१७॥
ekahaṃse naraḥ snātvā gosahasraphalaṃ labhet। kṛtaśaucaṃ samāsādya tīrthasevī kurūdvaha॥ puṇḍarīkam avāpnoti kṛtaśauco bhaven naraḥ॥03-81-17॥
[एकहंसे (ekahaṃse) - in one goose (in a place named Ekahaṃsa); नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṃ) - fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - he obtains; कृतशौचं (kṛtaśaucaṃ) - having performed purification; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - one who serves (practices) pilgrimage; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of Kurus; पुण्डरीकम् (puṇḍarīkam) - Puṇḍarīka (the sacred place Puṇḍarīka); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; कृतशौचः (kṛtaśaucaḥ) - having become purified; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(In one goose (in a place named Ekahaṃsa), having bathed, man obtains the fruit of a thousand cows. Having performed purification, having approached, one who serves pilgrimage, O best of Kurus, attains Puṇḍarīka; having become purified, man becomes.)
A man who bathes at Ekahaṃsa gains the merit equivalent to giving a thousand cows. O best of Kurus, a devotee who performs purification and undertakes pilgrimage there attains Puṇḍarīka; and, becoming purified, achieves blessedness. (03-81-17)
ततो मुञ्जवटं नाम महादेवस्य धीमतः। तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां गाणपत्यमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-१८॥
tato muñjavaṭaṃ nāma mahādevasya dhīmataḥ। tatroṣya rajanīmekāṃ gāṇapatyam avāpnuyāt॥03-81-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; मुञ्जवटम् (muñjavaṭam) - Muñjavaṭa (the place name); नाम (nāma) - named; महादेवस्य (mahādevasya) - of Mahādeva; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the intelligent (one); तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; गाणपत्यम् (gāṇapatyam) - lordship of Gaṇapati; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(From there, at Muñjavaṭa named after Mahādeva, of the intelligent one, having spent one night there, one may attain lordship of Gaṇapati.)
Then, from there, at the place called Muñjavaṭa dedicated to Mahādeva, by spending one night there, one attains the favor of Gaṇapati. (03-81-18)
तत्रैव च महाराज यक्षी लोकपरिश्रुता। तां चाभिगम्य राजेन्द्र पुण्याँल्लोकानवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-१९॥
tatraiva ca mahārāja yakṣī lokapariśrutā। tāṃ cābhigamya rājendra puṇyāṃllokānavāpnuyāt॥03-81-19॥

(In that very place and, O great king, the yakṣī who is known throughout the world; her and after approaching, O best of kings, the meritorious worlds one may attain.)
O great king, in that very place, the yakṣī who is renowned throughout the world—on approaching her, O king, one may attain the meritorious worlds. (03-81-19)
कुरुक्षेत्रस्य तद्द्वारं विश्रुतं भरतर्षभ। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य तीर्थसेवी समाहितः ॥०३-८१-२०॥
kurukṣetrasya taddvāraṁ viśrutaṁ bharatarṣabha। pradakṣiṇamupāvṛtya tīrthasevī samāhitaḥ ॥03-81-20॥

(Of Kurukṣetra that gateway renowned, O best of the Bharatas; having circumambulated to the right, the frequenter of sacred places, collected in mind.)
O best of the Bharatas, that gateway of Kurukṣetra is renowned. Having circumambulated it to the right, the devotee of sacred places, mindful and concentrated, (did so). (03-81-20)
संमिते पुष्कराणां च स्नात्वार्च्य पितृदेवताः। जामदग्न्येन रामेण आहृते वै महात्मना ॥ कृतकृत्यो भवेद्राजन्नश्वमेधं च विन्दति ॥०३-८१-२१॥
saṁmite puṣkarāṇāṁ ca snātvā arcya pitṛdevatāḥ. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa āhṛte vai mahātmanā ॥ kṛtakṛtyo bhaved rājann aśvamedhaṁ ca vindati ॥03-81-21॥
[संमिते (saṁmite) - equal; measured; पुष्कराणां (puṣkarāṇāṁ) - of sacred ponds; of lakes; च (ca) - and; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्च्य (arcya) - having worshipped; पितृदेवताः (pitṛdevatāḥ) - the ancestors and deities; जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by Jāmadagnya (descendant of Jamadagni); रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; आहृते (āhṛte) - brought; obtained; वै (vai) - indeed; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the high-souled; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - one who has accomplished his purpose; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; is; राजन् (rājan) - O King; अश्वमेधं (aśvamedham) - the horse sacrifice; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - attains; obtains;]
(Having bathed in the ponds of equal measure and having worshipped the ancestors and deities, indeed, by the high-souled Rāma Jāmadagnya who brought them, O King, becomes one who has accomplished his purpose and attains the horse sacrifice.)
O King, having bathed in the sacred ponds brought by the noble Rāma Jāmadagnya, and having worshipped the ancestors and deities, one fulfills all duties and attains the fruit of a horse sacrifice. (03-81-21)
ततो रामह्रदान्गच्छेत्तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। यत्र रामेण राजेन्द्र तरसा दीप्ततेजसा ॥क्षत्रमुत्साद्य वीर्येण ह्रदाः पञ्च निवेशिताः ॥०३-८१-२२॥
tato rāmahṛdāṅ gacchet tīrthasevī narādhipa। yatra rāmeṇa rājendra tarasā dīptatejasā ॥ kṣatram utsādya vīryeṇa hradāḥ pañca niveśitāḥ ॥03-81-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रामह्रदान् (rāmahṛdān) - Rama-lakes; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - pilgrim; devotee of sacred places; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king; यत्र (yatra) - where; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rama; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; तरसा (tarasā) - by might; दीप्ततेजसा (dīptatejasā) - of brilliant splendor; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - Kshatriyas (warrior class); उत्साद्य (utsādya) - having destroyed; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by valor; ह्रदाः (hradāḥ) - lakes; पञ्च (pañca) - five; निवेशिताः (niveśitāḥ) - established;]
(Then, to the Rama-lakes should go, the pilgrim king, where by Rama, O best of kings, by might, of brilliant splendor, the Kshatriyas, having destroyed, by valor, five lakes were established.)
Then, O king, the pilgrim should visit the Rama-lakes, where Rama, O best of kings, having destroyed the Kshatriyas by his might and brilliant splendor, established five lakes. (03-81-22)
पूरयित्वा नरव्याघ्र रुधिरेणेति नः श्रुतम्। पितरस्तर्पिताः सर्वे तथैव च पितामहाः ॥ ततस्ते पितरः प्रीता राममूचुर्महीपते ॥०३-८१-२३॥
pūrayitvā naravyāghra rudhireṇeti naḥ śrutam। pitarastarpitāḥ sarve tathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ ॥ tataste pitaraḥ prītā rāmamūcurmahīpate ॥03-81-23॥
[पूरयित्वा (pūrayitvā) - having filled; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; तर्पिताः (tarpitāḥ) - satisfied; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; पितामहाः (pitāmahāḥ) - grandfathers; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - those; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; रामम् (rāmam) - to Rāma; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king of the earth;]
(Having filled, O tiger among men, with blood, thus by us heard; the ancestors all satisfied, in the same way and the grandfathers. Then those ancestors pleased said to Rāma, O king of the earth.)
Having filled (the offering) with blood, O tiger among men, thus have we heard; all the ancestors and grandfathers were satisfied likewise. Then those pleased ancestors said to Rāma, O king of the earth. (03-81-23)
राम राम महाभाग प्रीताः स्म तव भार्गव। अनया पितृभक्त्या च विक्रमेण च ते विभो ॥ वरं वृणीष्व भद्रं ते किमिच्छसि महाद्युते ॥०३-८१-२४॥
rāma rāma mahābhāga prītāḥ sma tava bhārgava। anayā pitṛbhaktyā ca vikrameṇa ca te vibho ॥ varaṃ vṛṇīṣva bhadraṃ te kim icchasi mahādyute ॥03-81-24॥
[राम (rāma) - O Rāma; राम (rāma) - O Rāma; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - greatly fortunate one; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; स्म (sma) - indeed; तव (tava) - by you; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava; अनया (anayā) - by this; पितृभक्त्या (pitṛbhaktyā) - by filial devotion; च (ca) - and; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by valor; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; विभो (vibho) - O lord; वरम् (varam) - a boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; भद्रम् (bhadram) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; किम् (kim) - what; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you desire; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly resplendent one;]
(O Rāma, O Rāma, greatly fortunate one, pleased indeed by you, O Bhārgava, by this filial devotion and by valor and your, O lord. A boon choose, good fortune to you. What do you desire, O greatly resplendent one? (03-81-24))
O Rāma, O Rāma, greatly fortunate one, we are truly pleased with you, O Bhārgava, for your filial devotion and valor. Choose a boon, good fortune to you. What do you wish for, O greatly resplendent one? (03-81-24)
एवमुक्तः स राजेन्द्र रामः प्रहरतां वरः। अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं पितॄन्स गगने स्थितान् ॥०३-८१-२५॥
evam-uktaḥ sa rājendra rāmaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ। abravīt prāñjalir vākyaṃ pitṝn sa gagane sthitān ॥03-81-25॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed;“; स (sa) - he;“; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings;“; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama;“; प्रहरतां (praharatām) - of the strikers;“; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;“; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;“; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;“; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - word;“; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - to the ancestors;“; स (sa) - he;“; गगने (gagane) - in the sky;“; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing;“;]
(Thus addressed, he, O king of kings, Rama, best among the strikers, spoke, with joined palms, a word to the ancestors, he (who were) standing in the sky.)
Thus addressed, Rama—the best among warriors—O king of kings, with joined palms spoke these words to his ancestors who were standing in the sky. (03-81-25)
भवन्तो यदि मे प्रीता यद्यनुग्राह्यता मयि। पितृप्रसादादिच्छेयं तपसाप्यायनं पुनः ॥०३-८१-२६॥
bhavanto yadi me prītā yadyanugrāhyatā mayi। pitṛprasādādiccheyaṃ tapasāpyāyanaṃ punaḥ ॥03-81-26॥
[भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (honorable sirs); यदि (yadi) - if; मे (me) - to me; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - are satisfied; यत् (yat) - which; अनुग्राह्यता (anugrāhyatā) - worthiness to be favored; मयि (mayi) - in me; पितृप्रसादात् (pitṛprasādāt) - by father's favor; इच्छेयं (iccheyaṃ) - I would wish; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अप्यायनम् (apyāyanam) - nourishment; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(You (honorable sirs), if to me (you are) satisfied, which worthiness to be favored in me, by father's favor I would wish nourishment by austerity again.)
If you honorable sirs are satisfied with me, and consider me worthy of favor, then by my father's grace I would wish to receive nourishment through austerity once again. (03-81-26)
यच्च रोषाभिभूतेन क्षत्रमुत्सादितं मया। ततश्च पापान्मुच्येयं युष्माकं तेजसा ह्यहम् ॥ ह्रदाश्च तीर्थभूता मे भवेयुर्भुवि विश्रुताः ॥०३-८१-२७॥
yacca roṣābhibhūtena kṣatramutsāditaṃ mayā। tataśca pāpān mucyeyaṃ yuṣmākaṃ tejasā hyaham॥ hradāśca tīrthabhūtā me bhaveyur bhuvi viśrutāḥ॥03-81-27॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; रोषाभिभूतेन (roṣābhibhūtena) - overcome by anger; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - the kṣatriya class; उत्सादितम् (utsāditam) - destroyed; मया (mayā) - by me; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; च (ca) - and; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin; मुच्येयम् (mucyeyam) - I may be freed; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the energy; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; ह्रदाः (hradāḥ) - lakes; च (ca) - and; तीर्थभूताः (tīrthabhūtāḥ) - becoming holy places; मे (me) - my; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - may become; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; विश्रुताः (viśrutāḥ) - renowned;]
(And which kṣatriya class, overcome by anger, by me destroyed; therefore, and from sin I may be freed by your energy indeed I; and lakes becoming holy places, my, may become on earth renowned.)
And whatever kṣatriya race I destroyed out of anger, may I, by your energy, thereby be freed from sin; and may my lakes, becoming holy places, be renowned on earth. (03-81-27)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं रामस्य पितरस्तदा। प्रत्यूचुः परमप्रीता रामं हर्षसमन्विताः ॥०३-८१-२८॥
etac chrutvā śubhaṃ vākyaṃ rāmasya pitaras tadā। pratyūcuḥ paramaprītā rāmaṃ harṣa samanvitāḥ॥03-81-28॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शुभं (śubham) - auspicious; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; पितरस्तदा (pitaras tadā) - the fathers (ancestors) then; प्रत्यूचुः (pratyūcuḥ) - spoke (in reply); परमप्रीता (paramaprītāḥ) - extremely delighted; रामं (rāmaṃ) - to Rāma; हर्षसमन्विताः (harṣa samanvitāḥ) - filled with joy;]
(This having heard auspicious speech of Rāma the fathers then spoke (in reply) extremely delighted to Rāma filled with joy.)
Having heard this auspicious speech of Rāma, the ancestors then, extremely delighted and filled with joy, replied to Rāma. (03-81-28)
तपस्ते वर्धतां भूयः पितृभक्त्या विशेषतः। यच्च रोषाभिभूतेन क्षत्रमुत्सादितं त्वया ॥०३-८१-२९॥
tapaste vardhatāṃ bhūyaḥ pitṛbhaktyā viśeṣataḥ। yacca roṣābhibhūtena kṣatram utsāditaṃ tvayā॥03-81-29॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; ते (te) - your; वर्धताम् (vardhatām) - may increase; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; पितृभक्त्या (pitṛbhaktyā) - with devotion to father; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; यत् (yat) - that which; च (ca) - and; रोषाभिभूतेन (roṣābhibhūtena) - overcome by anger; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - kṣatriya-class; उत्सादितम् (utsāditam) - destroyed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(May your austerity increase further, especially due to devotion to your father; and that which, overcome by anger, the kṣatriya-class (has been) destroyed by you.)
May your austerity increase further, especially through your devotion to your father; and whatever kṣatriya-class you destroyed out of anger.
ततश्च पापान्मुक्तस्त्वं कर्मभिस्ते च पातिताः। ह्रदाश्च तव तीर्थत्वं गमिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥०३-८१-३०॥
tataś ca pāpān muktaḥ tvaṁ karmabhiḥ te ca pātitāḥ. hradāś ca tava tīrthatvaṁ gamiṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ ॥03-81-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sins; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; ते (te) - your; च (ca) - and; पातिताः (pātitāḥ) - cast off; ह्रदाः (hradāḥ) - lakes; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; तीर्थत्वं (tīrthatvaṁ) - sacredness; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will attain; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Then and from sins freed you, by actions your also cast off. Lakes and your sacredness will attain, not doubt.)
Therefore, you will be freed from sins, and your actions will also be cast off. Moreover, your lakes will attain sacredness—there is no doubt about it. (03-81-30)
ह्रदेष्वेतेषु यः स्नात्वा पितॄन्सन्तर्पयिष्यति। पितरस्तस्य वै प्रीता दास्यन्ति भुवि दुर्लभम् ॥ ईप्सितं मनसः कामं स्वर्गलोकं च शाश्वतम् ॥०३-८१-३१॥
hradeṣveteṣu yaḥ snātvā pitṝn santarpayiṣyati। pitaras tasya vai prītā dāsyanti bhuvi durlabham॥ īpsitaṃ manasaḥ kāmaṃ svargalokaṃ ca śāśvatam॥03-81-31॥
[ह्रदेषु (hradeṣu) - in the lakes; एतेषु (eteṣu) - in these; यः (yaḥ) - who; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; सन्तर्पयिष्यति (santarpayiṣyati) - will satisfy; पितरः (pitarah) - the forefathers; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रीता (prītā) - being pleased; दास्यन्ति (dāsyanti) - will give; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - rare; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; कामम् (kāmam) - wish; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - the heavenly world; च (ca) - and; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(In these lakes, who having bathed, will satisfy the ancestors; the forefathers of him, indeed, being pleased, will give rare things on earth, the desired wish of the mind and the heavenly world eternal.)
Whoever bathes in these lakes and satisfies the ancestors, his forefathers, being pleased, will grant him rare things on earth, whatever his mind desires, and the eternal world of heaven. (03-81-31)
एवं दत्त्वा वरान्राजन्रामस्य पितरस्तदा। आमन्त्र्य भार्गवं प्रीतास्तत्रैवान्तर्दधुस्तदा ॥०३-८१-३२॥
evaṁ dattvā varān rājan rāmasya pitaras tadā। āmantrya bhārgavaṁ prītās tatraiva antardadhuḥ tadā ॥03-81-32॥
[एवं (evaṁ) (evaṁ) - thus; दत्त्वा (dattvā) (dattvā) - having given; वरान् (varān) (varān) - boons; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; रामस्य (rāmasya) (rāmasya) - of Rāma; पितरः (pitaras) (pitaras) - fathers; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) (āmantrya) - having addressed; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) (bhārgavam) - Bhārgava; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) (prītāḥ) - pleased; तत्र एव (tatraiva) (tatraiva) - right there; अन्तर्दधुः (antardadhuḥ) (antardadhuḥ) - disappeared; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having given boons, O king, (Rāma's) fathers then, having addressed Bhārgava, pleased, right there disappeared then.)
Thus, having bestowed boons, O king, the fathers of Rāma then addressed Bhārgava, and being pleased, disappeared right there at that time. (03-81-32)
एवं रामह्रदाः पुण्या भार्गवस्य महात्मनः। स्नात्वा ह्रदेषु रामस्य ब्रह्मचारी शुभव्रतः ॥ राममभ्यर्च्य राजेन्द्र लभेद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८१-३३॥
evaṁ rāmahṛadāḥ puṇyā bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ। snātvā hṛadeṣu rāmasya brahmacārī śubhavrataḥ ॥ rāmam abhyarcya rājendra labhed bahu suvarṇakam ॥03-81-33॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; रामह्रदाः (rāmahṛadāḥ) - the Rama lakes; पुण्याः (puṇyāḥ) - auspicious; भार्गवस्य (bhārgavasya) - of Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; ह्रदेषु (hṛadeṣu) - in the lakes; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - the celibate; शुभव्रतः (śubhavrataḥ) - of auspicious vow; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma (object); अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having worshipped; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold; ।। (॥) - ०३-८१-३३॥ (03-81-33॥) -;]
(Thus, the Rama lakes, auspicious, of the great-souled Bhārgava; having bathed in the lakes of Rama, the celibate of auspicious vow, having worshipped Rama, O best of kings, may obtain much gold.)
Thus, O best of kings, one who bathes in the holy Rama lakes of the great-souled Bhārgava and, being a celibate of pure vow, worships Rama there, obtains much gold. (03-81-33)
वंशमूलकमासाद्य तीर्थसेवी कुरूद्वह। स्ववंशमुद्धरेद्राजन्स्नात्वा वै वंशमूलके ॥०३-८१-३४॥
vaṃśamūlakam āsādya tīrthasevī kurūd-vaha। sva-vaṃśam uddharet rājan snātvā vai vaṃśamūlake॥03-81-34॥
[वंशमूलकम् (vaṃśamūlakam) - the root of the bamboo (a holy spot); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; reached; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - the one who serves/visits sacred places; कुरूद्वह (kurūd-vaha) - O best of the Kurus; स्ववंशम् (sva-vaṃśam) - own lineage; उद्धरेत् (uddharet) - should uplift; save; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; वै (vai) - indeed; वंशमूलेके (vaṃśamūlake) - at the root of bamboo (the sacred place);]
(Having attained the bamboo root, a pilgrim, O best of the Kurus, should uplift his own lineage, O king, having bathed indeed at the bamboo root.)
O best of the Kurus, O king, upon reaching the place called Bamboo Root and bathing there, a pilgrim truly uplifts his own lineage. (03-81-34)
कायशोधनमासाद्य तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। शरीरशुद्धिः स्नातस्य तस्मिंस्तीर्थे न संशयः ॥ शुद्धदेहश्च संयाति शुभाँल्लोकाननुत्तमान् ॥०३-८१-३५॥
kāya-śodhanam āsādya tīrthaṃ bharata-sattama। śarīra-śuddhiḥ snātasya tasmiṃs tīrthe na saṃśayaḥ॥ śuddha-dehaś ca saṃyāti śubhān lokān anuttamān॥03-81-35॥
[कायशोधनम् (kāya-śodhanam) - body-purification; आसाद्य (āsādya) - after attaining; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; भरतसत्तम (bharata-sattama) - O best of Bharatas; शरीरशुद्धिः (śarīra-śuddhiḥ) - purity of body; स्नातस्य (snātasya) - of him who has bathed; तस्मिन् (tasmiṇ) - in that; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - sacred place; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; शुद्धदेहः (śuddha-dehaḥ) - having a pure body; च (ca) - and; संयाति (saṃyāti) - attains; शुभान् (śubhān) - auspicious; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अनुत्तमान् (anuttamān) - the highest;]
(Having attained bodily purification at the sacred place, O best of Bharatas, the purity of body of him who has bathed at that sacred place is without doubt. And the one with a pure body attains auspicious, highest worlds.)
O best of Bharatas, by attaining purification of the body at the sacred place, one's body becomes pure without doubt, and with such purified body, one goes to the most auspicious and highest worlds. (03-81-35)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। लोका यत्रोद्धृताः पूर्वं विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥०३-८१-३६॥
tato gacchet rājendra tīrthaṃ trailokyaviśrutam। lokā yatroddhṛtāḥ pūrvaṃ viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā॥03-81-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokyaviśrutam) - famous in the three worlds; लोका (lokāḥ) - beings; यत्र (yatra) - where; उद्धृताः (uddhṛtāḥ) - were lifted; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; प्रभविष्णुना (prabhaviṣṇunā) - by the mighty Viṣṇu;]
(Then should go, O king, to the sacred place famous in the three worlds, where beings were lifted previously by Viṣṇu, by the mighty Viṣṇu.)
Then, O king, you should go to the sacred place, renowned throughout the three worlds, where beings were formerly rescued by Viṣṇu, by the powerful Viṣṇu. (03-81-36)
लोकोद्धारं समासाद्य तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। स्नात्वा तीर्थवरे राजँल्लोकानुद्धरते स्वकान् ॥ श्रीतीर्थं च समासाद्य विन्दते श्रियमुत्तमाम् ॥०३-८१-३७॥
lokoddhāraṃ samāsādya tīrthaṃ trailokyaviśrutam। snātvā tīrthavare rājan lokān uddharate svakān॥ śrītīrthaṃ ca samāsādya vindate śriyam uttamām॥03-81-37॥
[लोकोद्धारं (lokoddhāram) - world-liberating; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred bathing place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokyaviśrutam) - renowned in the three worlds; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तीर्थवरे (tīrthavare) - in the excellent tīrtha; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लोकान् (lokān) - beings; उद्धरते (uddharate) - lifts up; स्वकान् (svakān) - his own; श्रीतीर्थं (śrītīrtham) - sacred prosperous tīrtha; च (ca) - and; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; श्रियम् (śriyam) - wealth; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme;]
(Having attained the world-liberating tīrtha renowned in the three worlds, having bathed in the excellent tīrtha, O king, he lifts up his own people. And having attained the sacred prosperous tīrtha, he obtains supreme wealth. (03-81-37))
O king, having visited the world-liberating tīrtha famed throughout the three worlds and bathing at that excellent tīrtha, one uplifts their own people. Likewise, by approaching the sacred and prosperous tīrtha, one attains supreme wealth. (03-81-37)
कपिलातीर्थमासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च दैवतानि पितॄंस्तथा ॥ कपिलानां सहस्रस्य फलं विन्दति मानवः ॥०३-८१-३८॥
kapilātīrtham-āsādya brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। tatra snātvā arcayitvā ca daivatāni pitṝṁs tathā॥ kapilānām sahasrasya phalaṁ vindati mānavaḥ॥03-81-38॥
[कपिलातीर्थम् (kapilātīrtham) - Kapila tīrtha; (the sacred place associated with Kapila;) आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated (in mind); तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; दैवतानि (daivatāni) - divinities; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; तथा (tathā) - likewise; कपिलानाम् (kapilānām) - of Kapilas; सहस्रस्य (sahasrasya) - of a thousand; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; person;]
(Having reached Kapila tīrtha, the celibate, concentrated (in mind), there, having bathed and having worshipped the divinities and likewise the ancestors, the man obtains the fruit of a thousand Kapilas.)
When a celibate person, full of concentration, reaches Kapila tīrtha, and there bathes and worships both the deities and the ancestors, he gains the merit equal to that of a thousand Kapilas. (03-81-38)
सूर्यतीर्थं समासाद्य स्नात्वा नियतमानसः। अर्चयित्वा पितॄन्देवानुपवासपरायणः ॥ अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति सूर्यलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-३९॥
sūryatīrthaṃ samāsādya snātvā niyatamānasaḥ। arcayitvā pitṝndevānupavāsaparāyaṇaḥ ॥ agniṣṭomam avāpnoti sūryalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-81-39॥

(Having approached the solar pilgrimage site, having bathed, with controlled mind, having worshipped the ancestors and gods, devoted to fasting, he obtains Agniṣṭoma and goes to the world of the Sun.)
Approaching the solar pilgrimage site, bathing with a controlled mind, worshipping the ancestors and gods, and being devoted to fasting, one attains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and reaches the world of the Sun. (03-81-39)
गवाम्भवनमासाद्य तीर्थसेवी यथाक्रमम्। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वाणो गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-४०॥
gavāmbhavanam āsādya tīrthasevī yathākramaṃ। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvāṇo gosahasraphalaṃ labhet॥03-81-40॥
[गवाम्भवनम् (gavāmbhavanam) - the abode of cow's water; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - one who worships sacred places; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramaṃ) - according to proper procedure; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - ablution; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(Having attained the abode of cow's water, one who serves sacred places, according to the proper procedure, performing ablution there, obtains the fruit of a thousand cows.)
Having reached the place of cow's water, whoever worships at the sanctuary in the prescribed manner and performs ablution there obtains the merit equal to a thousand cows. (03-81-40)
शङ्खिनीं तत्र आसाद्य तीर्थसेवी कुरूद्वह। देव्यास्तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा लभते रूपमुत्तमम् ॥०३-८१-४१॥
śaṅkhinīṃ tatra āsādya tīrthasevī kurūdvaha। devyāstīrthe naraḥ snātvā labhate rūpamuttamam ॥03-81-41॥

(Having reached Shankhini there, a devotee of sacred places, O best of the Kurus! At the holy place of the goddess, a man, having bathed, obtains excellent form.)
O best of the Kurus, having reached Shankhini there, a devotee of sacred places, if a man bathes at the holy place of the goddess, he attains an excellent form. (03-81-41)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र द्वारपालमरन्तुकम्। तस्य तीर्थं सरस्वत्यां यक्षेन्द्रस्य महात्मनः ॥ तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्नग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-४२॥
tato gacchet rājendra dvārapālam-arantukam । tasya tīrthaṃ sarasvatyām yakṣendrasya mahātmanaḥ ॥ tatra snātvā naro rājann-agnīṣṭoma-phalaṃ labhet ॥03-81-42॥

(Thereafter should go, O king among kings, to Dvārapālamarāntuka. Of that, the sacred spot on Sarasvatī, of the lord of Yakṣas, the great soul. There, having bathed, a man, O king, the fruit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice obtains.)
Thereafter, O king, one should go to Dvārapālamarāntuka. In that place on the Sarasvatī river is the sacred spot of the great soul, the lord of Yakṣas. There, O king, if a man bathes, he obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-42)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ ब्रह्मावर्तं नराधिप। ब्रह्मावर्ते नरः स्नात्वा ब्रह्मलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-४३॥
tato gacchet dharmajña brahmāvartaṃ narādhipa। brahmāvarte naraḥ snātvā brahmalokam avāpnuyāt ॥03-81-43॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; ब्रह्मावर्तम् (brahmāvartam) - Brahmāvarta (sacred region); नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; ब्रह्मावर्ते (brahmāvarte) - in Brahmāvarta; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - Brahmā’s world; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(From there, should go, knower of dharma, to Brahmāvarta, O lord of men. In Brahmāvarta, man, having bathed, Brahmā’s world, may attain.)
From there, O lord of men, the knower of dharma should go to Brahmāvarta. By bathing in Brahmāvarta, a man may attain the world of Brahmā. (03-81-43)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ सुतीर्थकमनुत्तमम्। यत्र संनिहिता नित्यं पितरो दैवतैः सह ॥०३-८१-४४॥
tato gacchet dharmajña sutīrthakam anuttamam। yatra saṃnihitā nityaṃ pitaro daivataiḥ saha॥03-81-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; सुतीर्थकम् (sutīrthakam) - excellent sacred place; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; highest; यत्र (yatra) - where; संनिहिताः (saṃnihitāḥ) - are present; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - with deities; सह (saha) - together;]
(Then should go, knower of dharma, to the unsurpassed excellent sacred place, where always are present the ancestors together with the deities.)
Then the knower of dharma should proceed to the supreme and excellent sacred place where the ancestors are always present along with the deities. (03-81-44)
तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत पितृदेवार्चने रतः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति पितृलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-४५॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta pitṛdevārcane rataḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti pitṛlokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-81-45॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekaṃ) - anointing; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; पितृदेव-अर्चने (pitṛdeva-arcane) - worship of ancestors and gods; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - aśvamedha sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; पितृलोकं (pitṛlokaṃ) - the world of ancestors; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(There, one should perform anointing, engaged in the worship of ancestors and gods; he obtains the aśvamedha sacrifice and goes to the world of ancestors.)
There, one who performs the anointing, engaging in the worship of ancestors and gods, attains the merit of the aśvamedha sacrifice and reaches the world of the ancestors. (03-81-45)
ततोऽम्बुवश्यं धर्मज्ञ समासाद्य यथाक्रमम्। कोशेश्वरस्य तीर्थेषु स्नात्वा भरतसत्तम ॥ सर्वव्याधिविनिर्मुक्तो ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ॥०३-८१-४६॥
tato 'mbuvaśyaṃ dharmajña samāsādya yathākramam। kośeśvarasya tīrtheṣu snātvā bharatasattama॥ sarvavyādhi-vinirmukto brahmaloke mahīyate॥03-81-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अम्बुवश्यम् (ambuvaśyam) - water restraint; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having obtained; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - according to order; कोशेश्वरस्य (kośeśvarasya) - of Kośeśvara; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in the sacred fords; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best among the Bharatas; सर्वव्याधि (sarvavyādhi) - all diseases; विनिर्मुक्तः (vinirmuktaḥ) - freed from; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in Brahma-loka; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Then, practicing water restraint, O knower of dharma, having obtained according to order, having bathed in the sacred fords of Kośeśvara, O best among the Bharatas, freed from all diseases, one is honored in Brahma-loka.)
Then, O knower of dharma, having followed the water restraint in due order and bathing in the sacred fords of Kośeśvara, O best of the Bharatas, being freed from all diseases, one is honored in Brahma-loka. (03-81-46)
मातृतीर्थं च तत्रैव यत्र स्नातस्य भारत। प्रजा विवर्धते राजन्ननन्तां चाश्नुते श्रियम् ॥०३-८१-४७॥
mātṛtīrthaṃ ca tatraiva yatra snātasya bhārata। prajā vivardhate rājann anantāṃ cāśnute śriyam ॥03-81-47॥
[मातृतीर्थं (mātṛ-tīrtham) - mother's sacred place; च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; यत्र (yatra) - where; स्नातस्य (snātasya) - for the one who has bathed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; विवर्धते (vivardhate) - increase; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अनन्तां (anantām) - unending; च (ca) - and; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; श्रियं (śriyam) - prosperity;]
(Mother's sacred place and there itself where for the one who has bathed, O Bhārata, offspring increase, O king, and unending prosperity attains.)
O Bhārata, at that very Mother's sacred place, for one who has bathed there, offspring increase, O king, and one attains unending prosperity. (03-81-47)
ततः शीतवनं गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः। तीर्थं तत्र महाराज महदन्यत्र दुर्लभम् ॥०३-८१-४८॥
tataḥ śītavanaṃ gacchenniyato niyatāśanaḥ। tīrthaṃ tatra mahārāja mahadanyatra durlabham ॥03-81-48॥

(Then, to the cool forest should go, the self-controlled, regulated in food; a sacred place there, O great king, great, elsewhere difficult to obtain.)
Then, O great king, the self-controlled one, regulated in food, should go to the cool forest; for there is a great sacred place there, difficult to find elsewhere. (03-81-48)
पुनाति दर्शनादेव दण्डेनैकं नराधिप। केशानभ्युक्ष्य वै तस्मिन्पूतो भवति भारत ॥०३-८१-४९॥
punāti darśanādeva daṇḍenaikaṃ narādhipa। keśānabhyukṣya vai tasmin pūto bhavati bhārata॥03-81-49॥
[पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - by sight; एव (eva) - indeed; दण्डेन (daṇḍena) - with the staff; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men; केशान् (keśān) - the hairs; अभ्युक्ष्य (abhy ukṣya) - having sprinkled; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - on that; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Purifies by sight indeed with the staff one, O ruler of men. Having sprinkled the hairs on that, indeed, purified he becomes, O Bhārata.)
O ruler of men, a staff alone purifies merely by sight. Having sprinkled hairs (with water) on it, one is purified, O Bhārata. (03-81-49)
तीर्थं तत्र महाराज श्वानलोमापहं स्मृतम्। यत्र विप्रा नरव्याघ्र विद्वांसस्तीर्थतत्पराः ॥०३-८१-५०॥
tīrthaṁ tatra mahārāja śvānalomāpahaṁ smṛtam। yatra viprā naravyāghra vidvāṁs tīrthatatparāḥ॥03-81-50॥
[तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; तत्र (tatra) - there; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; श्वान-लोम-अपहं (śvāna-loma-apaham) - removing (apaha) the hair (loma) of a dog (śvāna); स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered; यत्र (yatra) - where; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; नर-व्याघ्र (nara-vyāghra) - tiger (vyāghra) among men (nara); विद्वांसः (vidvāṁsaḥ) - the learned; तीर्थ-तत्पराः (tīrtha-tatparāḥ) - devoted (tatpara) to sacred places (tīrtha);]
(The sacred place there, O great king, is remembered as removing the hair of a dog. Where brāhmaṇas, O tiger among men, learned ones devoted to sacred places (reside).)
O great king, that place of pilgrimage there is known as removing the hair of a dog. There, O tiger among men, reside learned brāhmaṇas devoted to sacred places. (03-81-50)
श्वानलोमापनयने तीर्थे भरतसत्तम। प्राणायामैर्निर्हरन्ति श्वलोमानि द्विजोत्तमाः ॥०३-८१-५१॥
śvānalomāpanayane tīrthe bharatasattama। prāṇāyāmair nirharanti śvalomāni dvijottamāḥ ॥03-81-51॥
[श्वान-लोम-अपनयने (śvāna-loma-apanayane) - in the place for removal of dog hair; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - in the holy place; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; प्राणायामैः (prāṇāyāmaiḥ) - by breath control; निर्हरन्ति (nirharanti) - remove; श्व-लोमानि (śva-lomāni) - dog hairs; द्विजोत्तमाः (dvijottamāḥ) - O best of the twice-born;]
(In the place for removal of dog hair, in the holy place, O best of the Bharatas, by breath control, the best of the twice-born remove dog hairs.)
O best of the Bharatas, in the holy place for removal of dog hair, the foremost brahmins remove dog hairs by breath control. (03-81-51)
पूतात्मानश्च राजेन्द्र प्रयान्ति परमां गतिम्। दशाश्वमेधिकं चैव तस्मिंस्तीर्थे महीपते ॥ तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र गच्छेत परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८१-५२॥
pūtātmānaś ca rājendra prayānti paramāṁ gatim। daśāśvamedhikaṁ caiva tasmiṁs tīrthe mahīpate॥ tatra snātvā naravyāghra gacchet paramāṁ gatim॥03-81-52॥
[पूतात्मानः (pūtātmānaḥ) - purified souls; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; प्रयान्ति (prayānti) - attain; परमां (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state; दशाश्वमेधिकम् (daśāśvamedhikam) - (fruit) equal to ten Aśvamedha sacrifices; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - holy place; महीपते (mahīpate) - O ruler of the earth; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - after bathing; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would attain; परमां (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Purified souls, O king of kings, attain the supreme state and indeed (fruit) equal to ten Aśvamedha sacrifices in that holy place, O ruler of the earth. There, after bathing, O tiger among men, one would attain the supreme state.)
O king of kings, purified souls attain the supreme state and the merit equal to ten Aśvamedha sacrifices in that holy place, O ruler of the earth. There, O tiger among men, after bathing, one attains the supreme state. (03-81-52)

(Then he should go, O king, to the world-renowned human (place), where black deer, O king, afflicted by the hunter, having entered that lake, have attained human state.)

(In that holy place, a man having bathed, being a celibate, one who has conquered the senses, whose soul is purified from all sin, is honored in the heavenly world.)

(There, whoever human gives a service of food prepared from śyāmāka millets, having intended (it) for the gods and the ancestors, his fruit of virtue (is) great. When one brāhmaṇa is fed, it is as if a crore are fed. (03-81-56))
There, any human who offers a meal prepared from śyāmāka millets, with intent for the gods and ancestors, attains great spiritual merit. When even one brāhmaṇa is fed, it is as if ten million have been fed. (03-81-56)
तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च दैवतानि पितॄंस्तथा। उषित्वा रजनीमेकामग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-५७॥
tatra snātvārcayitvā ca daivatāni pitṝṁs tathā। uṣitvā rajanīm ekām agniṣṭomaphalaṁ labhet॥03-81-57॥

(There having bathed, having worshipped and the deities, the ancestors likewise, having stayed the night one, the fruit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice he obtains.)
There, after bathing and worshipping both the deities and likewise the ancestors, having stayed for one night, one obtains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-57)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र ब्रह्मणः स्थानमुत्तमम्। ब्रह्मोदुम्बरमित्येव प्रकाशं भुवि भारत ॥०३-८१-५८॥

(Then he should go, O king, to Brahman's supreme place. Brahma-udumbara thus indeed (is) famous on earth, O Bhārata.)

(Thereafter one should go, O king, to Saraka, famous in the world; in the dark fortnight, on the fourteenth day, and after approaching the Bull-bannered (Śiva), obtains all desires indeed and goes to the heavenly world.)
Thereafter, O king, one should proceed to Saraka, which is famous in all the world; approaching the Bull-bannered Lord (Śiva) there on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, one indeed attains all desires and goes to heaven. (03-81-62)
तिस्रः कोट्यस्तु तीर्थानां सरके कुरुनन्दन। रुद्रकोटिस्तथा कूपे ह्रदेषु च महीपते ॥ इलास्पदं च तत्रैव तीर्थं भरतसत्तम ॥०३-८१-६३॥
tisraḥ koṭy astu tīrthānāṁ sarake kurunandana। rudrakoṭis tathā kūpe hradeṣu ca mahīpate॥ ilāspadaṁ ca tatraiva tīrthaṁ bharatasattama॥03-81-63॥

(Three crores indeed of sacred fords in the lake, O delight of the Kurus. A crore of Rudras likewise in the well, and in the lakes, O lord of the earth. Abode of Ilā and just there is the sacred ford, O best of the Bharatas. (03-81-63))

(There, having bathed, having worshipped both the ancestors and the gods, O Bhārata, not evil course obtains, and the Vājapeya finds.)
There, having bathed and worshipped both the ancestors and the gods, O Bhārata, one does not come to an evil fate and attains the Vājapeya reward. (03-81-64)
किंदाने च नरः स्नात्वा किञ्जप्ये च महीपते। अप्रमेयमवाप्नोति दानं जप्यं च भारत ॥०३-८१-६५॥
kiṃ-dāne ca naraḥ snātvā kiṃ-japye ca mahīpate। aprameyam-avāpnoti dānaṃ japyaṃ ca bhārata ॥03-81-65॥

O king, having bathed, by what gift and with what recitation does a man obtain immeasurable merit in gifts and recitations, O descendant of Bharata? (03-81-65)
कलश्यां चाप्युपस्पृश्य श्रद्दधानो जितेन्द्रियः। अग्निष्टोमस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८१-६६॥
kalaśyāṃ cāpyupaspṛśya śraddadhāno jitendriyaḥ। agniṣṭomasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ॥03-81-66॥

(A human, having touched in the vessel also, with faith, having controlled the senses, obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)

शुक्लपक्षे दशम्यां तु पुण्डरीकं समाविशेत्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्पुण्डरीकफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-६९॥
śuklapakṣe daśamyāṃ tu puṇḍarīkaṃ samāviśet। tatra snātvā naro rājan puṇḍarīkaphalaṃ labhet॥03-81-69॥
[शुक्लपक्षे (śuklapakṣe) - in the bright fortnight; दशम्यां (daśamyām) - on the tenth (lunar day); तु (tu) - but; पुण्डरीकं (puṇḍarīkaṃ) - Pundarika (name of a sacred place or lotus); समाविशेत् (samāviśet) - should enter; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुण्डरीकफलम् (puṇḍarīkaphalam) - the fruit of (visiting) Pundarika; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains;]
(In the bright fortnight, on the tenth day, but one should enter Pundarika; there, having bathed, O king, the man obtains the fruit of Pundarika.)
O king, in the bright fortnight, on the tenth lunar day, if a man enters Pundarika and bathes there, he obtains the fruit of Pundarika. (03-81-69)
ततस्त्रिविष्टपं गच्छेत्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। तत्र वैतरणी पुण्या नदी पापप्रमोचनी ॥०३-८१-७०॥
tatas triviṣṭapaṃ gacchet triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। tatra vaitaraṇī puṇyā nadī pāpapramocanī॥03-81-70॥

(Then to heaven one goes, renowned in the three worlds. There, Vaitaraṇī, the holy river, liberating from sin.)
Then one reaches heaven, famed in the three worlds. There is the holy river Vaitaraṇī, which frees from sin. (03-81-70)
तत्र स्नात्वार्चयित्वा च शूलपाणिं वृषध्वजम्। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा गच्छेत परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८१-७१॥

(There, having bathed, having worshipped, and (having worshipped) the trident-bearing, bull-bannered (one), one whose self is purified from all sins should go to the supreme state.)
There, after bathing and worshipping Śiva, the trident-bearing one whose banner is the bull, one whose soul has been purified from all sins will attain the highest state. (03-81-71)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र फलकीवनमुत्तमम्। यत्र देवाः सदा राजन्फलकीवनमाश्रिताः ॥ तपश्चरन्ति विपुलं बहुवर्षसहस्रकम् ॥०३-८१-७२॥
tato gacchet rājendra phalakīvanam uttamam। yatra devāḥ sadā rājan phalakīvanam āśritāḥ ॥ tapaḥ caranti vipulaṃ bahu-varṣa-sahasrakam ॥03-81-72॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; फलकीवनम् (phalakīvanam) - Phalaki forest; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; यत्र (yatra) - where; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सदा (sadā) - always; राजन् (rājan) - O king; फलकीवनम् (phalakīvanam) - Phalaki forest; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - resorted to; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; चरन्ति (caranti) - perform; विपुलम् (vipulam) - extensive; बहुवर्षसहस्रकम् (bahu-varṣa-sahasrakam) - for many thousands of years;]
(From there, should go, O king, to the excellent Phalaki forest; where the gods always, O king, have resorted to Phalaki forest; austerity they perform, extensive, for many thousands of years.)
From there, O king, you should go to the excellent Phalaki forest, where the gods, O king, always reside in the Phalaki forest, performing great austerities for thousands of years. (03-81-72)
दृषद्वत्यां नरः स्नात्वा तर्पयित्वा च देवताः। अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां फलं विन्दति भारत ॥०३-८१-७३॥
dṛṣadvatyāṁ naraḥ snātvā tarpayitvā ca devatāḥ। agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṁ phalaṁ vindati bhārata॥03-81-73॥
[दृषद्वत्यां (dṛṣadvatyāṁ) - in the Drishadvati (river); नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied (by oblations); च (ca) - and; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the gods; अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां (agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṁ) - by Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra (rites); फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit (result); विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(In the Drishadvati, man having bathed, having satisfied and the gods, by Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra (rites), result obtains, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, a man, after bathing in the Drishadvati and satisfying the gods, obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra rites. (03-81-73)
तीर्थे च सर्वदेवानां स्नात्वा भरतसत्तम। गोसहस्रस्य राजेन्द्र फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८१-७४॥
tīrthe ca sarvadevānāṃ snātvā bharatasattama। gosahasrasya rājendra phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-81-74॥
[तीर्थे (tīrthe) - in the sacred place; च (ca) - and; सर्वदेवानाम् (sarvadevānām) - of all the gods; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best of the Bharatas; गोसहस्रस्य (gosahasrasya) - of a thousand cows; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; human;]
(In the sacred place and (having) bathed of all the gods, best of the Bharatas, (the) result of a thousand cows, O king, (a) man obtains.)
O best of the Bharatas, by bathing at the holy place of all the gods, a man obtains the merit equal to (the gift of) a thousand cows, O king. (03-81-74)
पाणिखाते नरः स्नात्वा तर्पयित्वा च देवताः। राजसूयमवाप्नोति ऋषिलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-७५॥
pāṇi-khāte naraḥ snātvā tarpayitvā ca devatāḥ. rājasūyam avāpnoti ṛṣilokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-81-75॥
[पाणिखाते (pāṇi-khāte) - in a hand-dug (well); नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having offered libations; च (ca) - and; देवताः (devatāḥ) - to the deities; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya (royal consecration); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; ऋषिलोकं (ṛṣilokam) - world of sages; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(In a hand-dug well, a man having bathed, having offered libations also to the deities, Rājasūya attains, the world of sages also goes.)
When a man, having bathed in a hand-dug well and having offered libations to the deities, attains the merit of the Rājasūya and also goes to the world of the sages. (03-81-75)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र मिश्रकं तीर्थमुत्तमम्। तत्र तीर्थानि राजेन्द्र मिश्रितानि महात्मना ॥०३-८१-७६॥
tato gacchet rājendra miśrakaṃ tīrtham uttamam। tatra tīrthāni rājendra miśritāni mahātmanā ॥03-81-76॥

(Then should go, O king, to Miśraka, best sacred place. There, holy waters, O king, mingled by the great-souled one.)
Then, O king, he should go to Miśraka, the excellent sacred place. There, O king, are holy waters mingled together by the great-souled one. (03-81-76)
व्यासेन नृपशार्दूल द्विजार्थमिति नः श्रुतम्। सर्वतीर्थेषु स स्नाति मिश्रके स्नाति यो नरः ॥०३-८१-७७॥
vyāsena nṛpaśārdūla dvijārtham iti naḥ śrutam। sarvatīrtheṣu sa snāti miśrake snāti yo naraḥ॥03-81-77॥
[व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; नृपशार्दूल (nṛpaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; द्विजार्थम् (dvijārtham) - for the sake of the twice-born; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard; सर्वतीर्थेषु (sarvatīrtheṣu) - in all the sacred bathing places; स (sa) - he; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; मिश्रके (miśrake) - in Miśraka; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; यः (yaḥ) - who; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(By Vyāsa, O tiger among kings, for the sake of the twice-born, thus by us has been heard. In all the sacred bathing places he bathes, in Miśraka bathes, who man.)
O tiger among kings, Vyāsa has said (as) we have heard, that for the sake of the twice-born, any man who bathes at Miśraka is as if he has bathed at all the sacred places. (03-81-77)
ततो व्यासवनं गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः। मनोजवे नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-७८॥
tato vyāsavanaṃ gacchenniyato niyatāśanaḥ। manojave naraḥ snātvā gosahasraphalaṃ labhet॥03-81-78॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; व्यासवनम् (vyāsavanam) - Vyāsa's forest; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - regulating food; मनोजवे (manojave) - to the iṣṭa (horse) named Manojava; (alternatively: ‘at a spot with the swiftness of the mind’) नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - attains;]
(Thereafter, Vyāsa's forest he should go, self-controlled, regulating food. At Manojava, a man, having bathed, the fruit of a thousand cows attains.)
Thereafter, one who is self-controlled and regulates his food should go to Vyāsa's forest. At Manojava, if a man bathes, he attains the merit equivalent to giving a thousand cows. (03-81-78)
गत्वा मधुवटीं चापि देव्यास्तीर्थं नरः शुचिः। तत्र स्नात्वार्चयेद्देवान्पितॄंश्च प्रयतः शुचिः ॥ स देव्या समनुज्ञातो गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-७९॥
gatvā madhuvaṭīṃ cāpi devyās tīrthaṃ naraḥ śuciḥ। tatra snātvā arcayed devān pitṝṃś ca prayataḥ śuciḥ॥ sa devyā samanujñāto go-sahasra-phalaṃ labhet॥03-81-79॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; मधुवटीम् (madhuvaṭīm) - to Madhuvaṭī (a place); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; देव्याः (deivyāḥ) - of the goddess; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; नरः (naraḥ) - man; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयेत् (arcayet) - should worship; देवान् (devān) - gods; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; च (ca) - and; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - with devotion; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; सः (saḥ) - he; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - by the goddess; समनुज्ञातः (samanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; गोसहस्रफलं (go-sahasra-phalaṃ) - the fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain;]
(Having gone to Madhuvaṭī and also to the sacred place of the goddess, a pure man there, having bathed, should worship the gods and ancestors with devotion and purity. He, permitted by the goddess, may obtain the fruit of a thousand cows. (03-81-79))
A pure man who goes to Madhuvaṭī and to the goddess’s sacred place, bathes there, and worships the gods and ancestors with devoted purity, and is sanctioned by the goddess, obtains the merit equal to the gift of a thousand cows. (03-81-79)
कौशिक्याः सङ्गमे यस्तु दृषद्वत्याश्च भारत। स्नाति वै नियताहारः सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८१-८०॥
kauśikyāḥ saṅgame yastu dṛṣadvatyāś ca bhārata। snāti vai niyatāhāraḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate॥03-81-80॥
[कौशिक्याः (kauśikyāḥ) - of the Kauśikī (river); सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; दृषद्वत्याः (dṛṣadvatyāḥ) - of the Dṛṣadvatī (river); च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; वै (vai) - indeed; नियताहारः (niyatāhāraḥ) - one of restrained food; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(Who indeed, at the confluence of the Kauśikī and Dṛṣadvatī, O Bhārata, bathes—one of restrained food—indeed is released from all sins.)
O Bhārata, whoever, having restrained food, bathes at the confluence of the Kauśikī and Dṛṣadvatī rivers is surely freed from all sins. (03-81-80)
ततो व्यासस्थली नाम यत्र व्यासेन धीमता। पुत्रशोकाभितप्तेन देहत्यागार्थनिश्चयः ॥०३-८१-८१॥
tato vyāsasthalī nāma yatra vyāsena dhīmatā। putraśokābhitaptena dehatyāgārthanicchayaḥ ॥03-81-81॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; व्यासस्थली (vyāsasthalī) - Vyāsasthalī; (the place called Vyāsa's station;) नाम (nāma) - named; called; यत्र (yatra) - where; व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; intelligent; पुत्रशोक-अभितप्तेन (putraśoka-abhi-taptena) - tormented by grief for (his) son; देहत्याग-अर्थ-निश्चयः (deha-tyāga-artha-niścayaḥ) - resolved to give up the body;]
(Then, Vyāsasthalī named, where by Vyāsa, wise, tormented by grief for (his) son, resolved to give up the body.)
Then, at the place called Vyāsasthalī, where the wise Vyāsa, tormented by grief for his son, resolved to relinquish his body. (03-81-81)
कृतो देवैश्च राजेन्द्र पुनरुत्थापितस्तदा। अभिगम्य स्थलीं तस्य गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-८२॥
kṛto devaiś ca rājendra punar-utthāpitas tadā। abhigamya sthalīṁ tasya go-sahasra-phalaṁ labhet ॥03-81-82॥
[कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - performed; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; पुनः (punar) - again; उत्थापितः (utthāpitaḥ) - raised up; तदा (tadā) - then; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; स्थलीम् (sthalīm) - the place; तस्य (tasya) - of that; गोसहस्रफलं (go-sahasra-phalaṁ) - the fruit equal to a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(Performed by the gods and, O king, again raised up then; having approached that place, one obtains the fruit equal to a thousand cows.)
O King, a rite performed by the gods was then restored once again; whoever approaches that place obtains the merit equivalent to giving a thousand cows. (03-81-82)
किंदत्तं कूपमासाद्य तिलप्रस्थं प्रदाय च। गच्छेत परमां सिद्धिमृणैर्मुक्तः कुरूद्वह ॥०३-८१-८३॥
kiṁdattaṁ kūpam āsādya tilaprasthaṁ pradāya ca। gacchet paramāṁ siddhiṁ ṛṇair muktaḥ kurūdvaha॥03-81-83॥
[किंदत्तं (kiṁdattaṁ) - given what; (kiṁ - what; dattaṁ - given;) कूपम् (kūpam) - well; (kūpa - well;) आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; तिलप्रस्थं (tilaprastham) - measure of sesame seeds; (tila - sesame; prastha - measure;) प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; च (ca) - and; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - may attain; परमां (paramām) - supreme; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; ऋणैः (ṛṇaiḥ) - from debts; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of Kurus; (kurū - of Kurus; dvaha - best;);]
(Given what, having reached a well, having given a measure of sesame seeds, and (thus), may attain supreme perfection, freed from debts, O best of Kurus.)
O best of the Kurus, having reached a well and given a measure of sesame seeds—whatever is offered thus—one is freed from debts and attains the highest perfection. (03-81-83)
अहश्च सुदिनं चैव द्वे तीर्थे च सुदुर्लभे। तयोः स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र सूर्यलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-८४॥
ahaś ca sudinaṁ caiva dve tīrthe ca sudurlabhe. tayoḥ snātvā naravyāghra sūryalokam avāpnuyāt ॥03-81-84॥
[अहः (ahaḥ) - day; च (ca) - and; सुदिनम् (sudinam) - auspicious day; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्वे (dve) - two; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - sacred fords; च (ca) - and; सुदुर्लभे (sudurlabhe) - very difficult to obtain; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; सूर्यलोकम् (sūryalokam) - the world of the Sun; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - one should attain;]
(And the day and indeed the auspicious day, the two very difficult to obtain sacred fords; having bathed at those two, O tiger among men, one should attain the world of the Sun.)
O tiger among men, if one bathes at those two very difficult to obtain sacred fords, both on the day and indeed on the auspicious day, he attains the world of the Sun. (03-81-84)
मृगधूमं ततो गच्छेत्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। तत्र गङ्गाह्रदे स्नात्वा समभ्यर्च्य च मानवः ॥ शूलपाणिं महादेवमश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-८५॥
mṛgadhūmaṃ tato gacchettṛṣu lokeṣu viśrutam. tatra gaṅgāhrade snātvā samabhyarcya ca mānavaḥ ॥ śūlapāṇiṃ mahādevamaśvamedhaphalaṃ labheta ॥03-81-85॥
[मृगधूमं (mṛgadhūmam) - Mṛgadhūma (name of a place); ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - celebrated; तत्र (tatra) - there; गङ्गाह्रदे (gaṅgāhrade) - in the holy pond of the Gaṅgā; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; समभ्यर्च्य (samabhyarcya) - having worshipped well; च (ca) - and; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; शूलपाणिं (śūlapāṇim) - the wielder of the trident; महादेवम् (mahādevam) - great god (Mahādeva); अश्वमेधफलं (aśvamedhaphalam) - the fruit of ashvamedha (horse-sacrifice); लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(Mṛgadhūma thereafter should go, in the three worlds celebrated. There, in the holy pond of Gaṅgā, having bathed, having worshipped well and man, the trident-bearer, the great god, the fruit of ashvamedha he obtains.)
After that, one should go to the place called Mṛgadhūma, famous in the three worlds. There, after bathing in the sacred pond of the Gaṅgā and worshipping Mahādeva, the wielder of the trident, a person obtains the fruit of an ashvamedha sacrifice. (03-81-85)
देवतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। अथ वामनकं गच्छेत्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् ॥०३-८१-८६॥
devatīrthe naraḥ snātvā gosahasraphalaṁ labhet। atha vāmanakaṁ gacchettriṣu lokeṣu viśrutam ॥03-81-86॥
[देवतीर्थे (devatīrthe) - in the holy place of the gods; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṁ) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain; अथ (atha) - then; वामनकं (vāmanakaṁ) - Vāmanaka (a sacred place); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned;]
(In the holy place of the gods, a man having bathed may obtain the fruit of a thousand cows. Then he should go to Vāmanaka, renowned in the three worlds.)
By bathing at Devatīrtha, a man may attain the merit equal to gifting a thousand cows; then he should proceed to Vāmanaka, which is famed throughout the three worlds. (03-81-86)
तत्र विष्णुपदे स्नात्वा अर्चयित्वा च वामनम्। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा विष्णुलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-८७॥
tatra viṣṇupade snātvā arcayitvā ca vāmanam। sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā viṣṇulokam avāpnuyāt ॥03-81-87॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; विष्णुपदे (viṣṇupade) - at the place/feet of Viṣṇu; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; वामनम् (vāmanam) - Vāmana (the dwarf incarnation of Viṣṇu); सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā) - with soul purified from all sins; विष्णुलोकम् (viṣṇulokam) - the world of Viṣṇu; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - one attains;]
(There, at the place of Viṣṇu, having bathed, having worshipped also Vāmana, with soul purified from all sins, the world of Viṣṇu one attains.)
There, after bathing at the feet of Viṣṇu and worshipping Vāmana, one whose soul is purified from all sins attains the world of Viṣṇu. (03-81-87)
कुलम्पुने नरः स्नात्वा पुनाति स्वकुलं नरः। पवनस्य ह्रदं गत्वा मरुतां तीर्थमुत्तमम् ॥ तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र वायुलोके महीयते ॥०३-८१-८८॥
kulampune naraḥ snātvā punāti svakulaṃ naraḥ। pavanasya hradaṃ gatvā marutāṃ tīrtham uttamam ॥ tatra snātvā naravyāghra vāyuloke mahīyate ॥03-81-88॥
[कुलम्पुने (kulampune) - destroyer of family sin; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; स्वकुलं (svakulaṃ) - his own family; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पवनस्य (pavanasya) - of the Wind (god); ह्रदं (hradaṃ) - lake; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; मरुतां (marutāṃ) - of the Maruts (wind gods); तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; वायुलोके (vāyuloke) - in the world of the Wind (god); महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having bathed, the man who destroys family sin purifies his own family. Having gone to the lake of the Wind (god), the excellent holy place of the Maruts, there, having bathed, O tiger among men, he is honored in the world of the Wind (god). (03-81-88))
A man who destroys family sin, after bathing, purifies his own family. And, having gone to the lake of the Wind god—the most excellent holy place of the Maruts—and bathing there, O tiger among men, he is honored in the realm of the Wind god. (03-81-88)
अमराणां ह्रदे स्नात्वा अमरेषु नराधिप। अमराणां प्रभावेन स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥०३-८१-८९॥
amarāṇāṃ hṛde snātvā amareṣu narādhipa। amarāṇāṃ prabhāvena svargaloke mahīyate ॥03-81-89॥
[अमराणां (amarāṇām) - of the immortals; (of the gods); ह्रदे (hṛde) - in the lake; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अमरेषु (amareṣu) - among the immortals; (among the gods); नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; (O ruler of men); अमराणां (amarāṇām) - of the immortals; (of the gods); प्रभावेन (prabhāvena) - by the power; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the heavenly world; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(O king, having bathed in the lake of the immortals, among the immortals, by the power of the immortals, one is honored in the heavenly world.)
O king, if one bathes in the lake of the gods, then, by the power of the gods, he is honored in heaven. (03-81-89)
शालिहोत्रस्य राजेन्द्र शालिशूर्पे यथाविधि। स्नात्वा नरवरश्रेष्ठ गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-९०॥
śālihotrasya rājeṃdra śāliśūrpe yathāvidhi। snātvā naravaraśreṣṭha gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-81-90॥

श्रीकुञ्जं च सरस्वत्यां तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्नग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-९१॥

(Then Naimisha-grove and having approached, O best of the Kurus, sages surely, O king, of Naimisha, rich in asceticism, pilgrimage, having set forth, Kurukshetra, went, formerly.)
Then, O best of the Kurus, the sages of Naimisha, rich in asceticism, having visited the Naimisha grove, once went to Kurukshetra on a pilgrimage. (03-81-92)
ततः कुञ्जः सरस्वत्यां कृतो भरतसत्तम। ऋषीणामवकाशः स्याद्यथा तुष्टिकरो महान् ॥०३-८१-९३॥
tataḥ kuñjaḥ sarasvatyāṃ kṛto bharatasattama। ṛṣīṇām avakāśaḥ syād yathā tuṣṭikaro mahān ॥03-81-93॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; कुञ्जः (kuñjaḥ) - arbor; सरस्वत्याम् (sarasvatyām) - on the Sarasvati (river); कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was made; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; अवकाशः (avakāśaḥ) - resting place; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; यथा (yathā) - so that; तुष्टिकरः (tuṣṭikaraḥ) - delight-bringing; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Thereafter an arbor on the Sarasvati was made, O best of the Bharatas, so that a resting place of the sages might be, delight-bringing, great.)
Then a great and delightful arbor was constructed on the Sarasvati, O best of the Bharatas, to serve as a resting place for the sages. (03-81-93)
तस्मिन्कुञ्जे नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। कन्यातीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-९४॥
tasmin-kuñje naraḥ snātvā gosahasraphalaṃ labhet। kanyātīrthe naraḥ snātvā agniṣṭomaphalaṃ labhet॥03-81-94॥
[तस्मिन्कुञ्जे (tasmin-kuñje) - in that grove; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṃ) - fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains; कन्यातीर्थे (kanyātīrthe) - at the Kanyā tīrtha (sacred place); नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭomaphalaṃ) - fruit (merit) of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains;]
(In that grove, man having bathed obtains the merit of a thousand cows. At the Kanyā tīrtha, man having bathed obtains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-94))
Bathing in that grove grants a man the merit of giving a thousand cows in charity; bathing at the Kanyā tīrtha gives the merit of performing the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-94)
ततो गच्छेन्नरव्याघ्र ब्रह्मणः स्थानमुत्तमम्। तत्र वर्णावरः स्नात्वा ब्राह्मण्यं लभते नरः ॥ ब्राह्मणश्च विशुद्धात्मा गच्छेत परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८१-९५॥
tato gacchennaravyāghra brahmaṇaḥ sthānamuttamam। tatra varṇāvaraḥ snātvā brāhmaṇyaṃ labhate naraḥ ॥ brāhmaṇaśca viśuddhātmā gacchet paramāṃ gatim ॥03-81-95॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; तत्र (tatra) - there; वर्ण-आवरः (varṇa-āvaraḥ) - lower in caste; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - state of being a Brahmin; लभते (labhate) - obtains; नरः (naraḥ) - man; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; च (ca) - and; विशुद्धात्मा (viśuddhātmā) - of pure soul; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Then should go, tiger among men, to the supreme place of Brahman. There, one of lower caste having bathed, the state of Brahmin obtains, man. A Brahmin also, of pure soul, should go to the supreme state. (03-81-95))
Then, O tiger among men, one should go to the supreme place of Brahman. There, a man of lower caste, having bathed, obtains the state of being a Brahmin. A Brahmin, too, who is of pure soul, should attain the supreme state. (03-81-95)
ततो गच्छेन्नरश्रेष्ठ सोमतीर्थमनुत्तमम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्सोमलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-९६॥
tato gacchen nara-śreṣṭha soma-tīrtham anuttamam। tatra snātvā naro rājan soma-lokam avāpnuyāt॥03-81-96॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - best of men; सोमतीर्थम् (soma-tīrtham) - Soma’s sacred ford; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सोमलोकम् (soma-lokam) - Soma’s realm; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - should obtain;]
(Then should go, best of men, to Soma’s unsurpassed sacred ford. There, having bathed, man, O king, Soma’s realm should obtain.)
Then, O best of men, you should go to the unsurpassed holy ford of Soma. There, O king, a man who bathes attains the realm of Soma. (03-81-96)
सप्तसारस्वतं तीर्थं ततो गच्छेन्नराधिप। यत्र मङ्कणकः सिद्धो महर्षिर्लोकविश्रुतः ॥०३-८१-९७॥
saptasārasvataṁ tīrthaṁ tato gacchen narādhipa। yatra maṅkaṇakaḥ siddho maharṣir lokaviśrutaḥ ॥03-81-97॥
[सप्तसारस्वतम् (saptasārasvatam) - the holy place (tīrtha) of seven Sarasvats; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred bathing place; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; यत्र (yatra) - where; मङ्कणकः (maṅkaṇakaḥ) - Maṅkaṇaka; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - perfected one; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - great sage; लोकविश्रुतः (lokaviśrutaḥ) - famous in the world;]
(To the holy place of the seven Sarasvats, the sacred bathing place, from there should go, O king, where Maṅkaṇaka, the perfected one, the great sage, famous in the world.)
O king, from there, you should proceed to the holy place of the seven Sarasvats, where the perfected sage Maṅkaṇaka, renowned throughout the world, resides. (03-81-97)
पुरा मङ्कणको राजन्कुशाग्रेणेति नः श्रुतम्। क्षतः किल करे राजंस्तस्य शाकरसोऽस्रवत् ॥०३-८१-९८॥
purā maṅkaṇako rājan kuśāgreṇeti naḥ śrutam। kṣataḥ kila kare rājan tasya śākaraso'sravat॥03-81-98॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; मङ्कणकः (maṅkaṇakaḥ) - Maṅkaṇaka (proper noun, name of a sage or ascetic); राजन् (rājan) - O king; कुशाग्रेण (kuśāgreṇa) - with the tip of kuśa grass; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard; क्षतः (kṣataḥ) - wounded; किल (kila) - indeed; करे (kare) - on (his) hand; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्य (tasya) - his; शाकरसः (śākarasaḥ) - sap of vegetable (vegetable juice); अस्रवत् (asravat) - flowed;]
(Formerly, Maṅkaṇaka, O king, with the tip of kuśa grass—thus by us has been heard. Wounded indeed, on his hand, O king, his vegetable sap flowed.)
O king, it has been heard by us that, formerly, Maṅkaṇaka, when wounded on his hand with the tip of kuśa grass, indeed, vegetable sap flowed from him. (03-81-98)
स वै शाकरसं दृष्ट्वा हर्षाविष्टो महातपाः। प्रनृत्तः किल विप्रर्षिर्विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः ॥०३-८१-९९॥
sa vai śākarasaṃ dṛṣṭvā harṣāviṣṭo mahātapāḥ। pranṛttaḥ kila viprarṣirvismayotphullalocanaḥ॥03-81-99॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; शाकरसं (śākarasaṃ) - vegetable-juice; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; हर्षाविष्टो (harṣāviṣṭaḥ) - overcome with joy; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; प्रनृत्तः (pranṛttaḥ) - danced; किल (kila) - as is well known; विप्रर्षिः (viprarṣiḥ) - sage among Brāhmaṇas; विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनः (vismayotphullalocanaḥ) - with eyes wide open in astonishment;]
(He indeed, having seen the vegetable-juice, overcome with joy, the great ascetic danced, as is well known, the sage among Brāhmaṇas, with eyes wide open in astonishment.)
Upon seeing the vegetable-juice, the great ascetic, truly overcome with joy, danced; the sage among Brāhmaṇas had his eyes wide open in astonishment. (03-81-99)
ततस्तस्मिन्प्रनृत्ते वै स्थावरं जङ्गमं च यत्। प्रनृत्तमुभयं वीर तेजसा तस्य मोहितम् ॥०३-८१-१००॥
tatas tasmin pranṛtte vai sthāvaraṃ jaṅgamaṃ ca yat। pranṛttam ubhayaṃ vīra tejasā tasya mohitam॥03-81-100॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रनृत्ते (pranṛtte) - when dancing; वै (vai) - indeed; स्थावरं (sthāvaram) - immovable; जङ्गमं (jaṅgamam) - movable; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; प्रनृत्तम् (pranṛttam) - danced (was dancing); उभयं (ubhayaṃ) - both; वीर (vīra) - O hero; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; तस्य (tasya) - of him; मोहितम् (mohitam) - bewildered;]
(Then, in that when (he) was dancing indeed, whatever immovable and movable, both danced, O hero; by his brilliance, (all) of them were bewildered.)
Then, as he danced there, O hero, all movable and immovable beings danced as well; both were bewildered by his brilliance. (03-81-100)
ब्रह्मादिभिः सुरै राजन्नृषिभिश्च तपोधनैः। विज्ञप्तो वै महादेव ऋषेरर्थे नराधिप ॥ नायं नृत्येद्यथा देव तथा त्वं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-८१-१०१॥
brahmādibhiḥ surai rājanṛṣibhiś ca tapodhanaiḥ। vijñapto vai mahādeva ṛṣer arthe narādhipa ॥ nāyaṃ nṛtyed yathā deva tathā tvaṃ kartum arhasi ॥03-81-101॥
[ब्रह्मादिभिः (brahmādibhiḥ) - by Brahmā and others; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; च (ca) - and; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by those rich in austerity; विज्ञप्तः (vijñaptaḥ) - requested; वै (vai) - indeed; महादेव (mahādeva) - O Mahādeva; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - for the sage; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); नृत्येत् (nṛtyet) - should dance; यथा (yathā) - as; देव (deva) - O god; तथा (tathā) - likewise; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy (of);]
(By Brahmā and others, by the gods, O king, and by the sages and by those rich in austerity, indeed requested, O Mahādeva, for the sake of the sage, O lord of men. Not this one should dance as, O god, likewise you are worthy to do.)
O lord of men, O king, you have been requested by Brahmā, the gods, sages, and ascetics, O Mahādeva, for the sake of the sage. This one should not dance as the gods do; therefore, you should similarly perform as is appropriate. (03-81-101)
ततः प्रनृत्तमासाद्य हर्षाविष्टेन चेतसा। सुराणां हितकामार्थमृषिं देवोऽभ्यभाषत ॥०३-८१-१०२॥
tataḥ pranṛttam āsādya harṣāviṣṭena cetasā। surāṇāṃ hitakāmārtham ṛṣiṃ devo'bhyabhāṣata ॥03-81-102॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रनृत्तम् (pranṛttam) - having danced; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; हर्षाविष्टेन (harṣāviṣṭena) - with joy-overcome; चेतसा (cetasā) - with mind; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; हितकामार्थम् (hitakāmārtham) - for the purpose of desiring welfare; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Then, having danced and approached with a mind overcome by joy, for the purpose of desiring the gods' welfare, the god addressed the sage.)
Then, after dancing, with a mind filled with joy, the god approached and addressed the sage for the welfare of the gods. (03-81-102)
अहो महर्षे धर्मज्ञ किमर्थं नृत्यते भवान्। हर्षस्थानं किमर्थं वा तवाद्य मुनिपुङ्गव ॥०३-८१-१०३॥
aho maharṣe dharmajña kimarthaṁ nṛtyate bhavān। harṣasthānaṁ kimarthaṁ vā tavādya munipuṅgava॥03-81-103॥
[अहो (aho) - Oh; महर्षे (maharṣe) - O great sage; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; नृत्यते (nṛtyate) - is dancing; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself; हर्षस्थानं (harṣasthānam) - place/cause of joy; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; वा (vā) - or; तव (tava) - for you; द्य (adya) - today; मुनिपुङ्गव (munipuṅgava) - O best of sages;]
(Oh O great sage, knower of dharma, for what reason are you dancing yourself? Place of joy, for what reason or for you today, O best of sages?)
Oh, O great sage, knower of dharma, for what reason are you dancing? What is the cause of your joy today, O best of sages? (03-81-103)

kiṁ na paśyasi me deva karāccḥākarasaṁ srutam। yaṁ dṛṣṭvāhaṁ pranṛtto vai harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ ॥03-81-104॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; न (na) - not; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; मे (me) - of me; my; देव (deva) - O god; करात् (karāt) - from hand; छा (cchā) - juice; extraction; करसं (karasaṁ) - juice; (here, the oblique form from 'rasa'); स्रुतम् (srutam) - dripped; has flowed; यं (yaṁ) - which; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रनृत्तः (pranṛttaḥ) - danced much; danced around; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; हर्षेण (harṣeṇa) - with joy; महता (mahatā) - great; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed (with); filled (with); attached (to);]
(What, do you not see, O god, from (my) hand, the extracted juice has dripped? Which, having seen, I, indeed, greatly filled with joy, danced?)
O god, do you not see the juice that has dripped from my hand? Seeing it, I, overwhelmed with great joy, truly danced. (3-81-104)
पुलस्त्य उवाच॥

Pulastya said;
तं प्रहस्याब्रवीद्देवो मुनिं रागेण मोहितम्। अहं वै विस्मयं विप्र न गच्छामीति पश्य माम् ॥०३-८१-१०५॥
taṁ prahasya abravīt devo muniṁ rāgeṇa mohitam। ahaṁ vai vismayaṁ vipra na gacchāmi iti paśya mām ॥03-81-105॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; मुनिम् (munim) - the sage; रागेण (rāgeṇa) - with passion; मोहितम् (mohitam) - deluded; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; वै (vai) - indeed; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; विप्र (vipra) - O brahmin; न (na) - not; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - (I) attain; इति (iti) - thus; पश्य (paśya) - see; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Having smiled, the god spoke to the sage who was deluded with passion: "I, indeed, O Brahmin, do not attain wonder, thus, see me." (03-81-105))
Smiling, the god said to the sage, who was bewildered by passion, "O Brahmin, I truly do not become amazed—see me." (03-81-105)
एवमुक्त्वा नरश्रेष्ठ महादेवेन धीमता। अङ्गुल्यग्रेण राजेन्द्र स्वाङ्गुष्ठस्ताडितोऽनघ ॥०३-८१-१०६॥
evam-uktvā nara-śreṣṭha mahādevena dhīmatā। aṅguly-agreṇa rājendra sva-aṅguṣṭha-stāḍitaḥ anagha ॥03-81-106॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best of men; महादेवेन (mahādevena) - by Mahadeva; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; अङ्गुल्यग्रेण (aṅguly-agreṇa) - with the tip of the finger; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; स्वाङ्गुष्ठ (sva-aṅguṣṭha) - own thumb; स्ताडितः (stāḍitaḥ) - struck; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Thus having spoken, O best of men, by wise Mahadeva, with the tip of the finger, O king, own thumb struck, O sinless one.)
O best of men, after thus speaking, wise Mahadeva struck his own thumb with the tip of his finger, O king, O sinless one. (03-81-106)
ततो भस्म क्षताद्राजन्निर्गतं हिमसंनिभम्। तद्दृष्ट्वा व्रीडितो राजन्स मुनिः पादयोर्गतः ॥०३-८१-१०७॥
tato bhasma kṣatād rājan nirgataṃ hima-saṃnibham। tad dṛṣṭvā vrīḍito rājan sa muniḥ pādayoḥ gataḥ ॥03-81-107॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भस्म (bhasma) - ash; क्षतात् (kṣatāt) - from the wound; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निर्गतम् (nirgatam) - emerged; हिमसंनिभम् (hima-saṃnibham) - resembling snow; तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at the feet; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(Then ash, O king, from the wound emerged, resembling snow. That having seen, ashamed, O king, he—the sage—at the feet went.)
Then, O king, ash resembling snow emerged from the wound. Seeing that, the sage, feeling ashamed, went to (fall at) his feet. (03-81-107)
नान्यं देवमहं मन्ये रुद्रात्परतरं महत्। सुरासुरस्य जगतो गतिस्त्वमसि शूलधृक् ॥०३-८१-१०८॥
nānyaṃ devam ahaṃ manye rudrāt parataraṃ mahat। surāsurasya jagato gatīs tvam asi śūladhṛk ॥03-81-108॥

(Not other god I consider than Rudra higher great. Of gods and asuras, of the world, the refuge you are, O trident-bearer.)
I do not consider any god higher or greater than Rudra. O trident-bearer, you are the refuge of the world, of gods and asuras. (03-81-108)
त्वया सृष्टमिदं विश्वं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्। त्वामेव भगवन्सर्वे प्रविशन्ति युगक्षये ॥०३-८१-१०९॥
tvayā sṛṣṭam idaṃ viśvaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram। tvām eva bhagavan sarve praviśanti yugakṣaye ॥03-81-109॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सृष्टम् (sṛṣṭam) - created; इदं (idaṃ) - this; विश्वम् (viśvam) - universe; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - three worlds; सचराचरम् (sacarācaram) - with moving and unmoving (beings); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एव (eva) - alone; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of the age;]
(By you created this universe, the three worlds with moving and unmoving. You alone, O Lord, all enter at the end of the age.)
This universe of the three worlds, with all that moves and is immobile, has been created by you; at the end of the age, O Lord, all enter into you alone. (03-81-109)
देvairपि न शक्यस्त्वं परिज्ञातुं कुतो मया। त्वयि सर्वे च दृश्यन्ते सुरा ब्रह्मादयोऽनघ ॥०३-८१-११०॥
devair api na śakyas tvaṁ parijñātuṁ kuto mayā। tvayi sarve ca dṛśyante surā brahmādayo'nagha ॥03-81-110॥
[देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - capable (of being known); त्वम् (tvam) - you; परिज्ञातुम् (parijñātum) - to be comprehended; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; मया (mayā) - by me; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahma and others; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(By the gods even not capable (of being known) you (are), to be comprehended how by me? In you all and are seen the gods, Brahma and others, O sinless one.)
Even by the gods, you are not knowable; how, then, can I (know you)? In you, O sinless one, are seen all the gods—Brahma and the rest. (03-81-110)
सर्वस्त्वमसि लोकानां कर्ता कारयिता च ह। त्वत्प्रसादात्सुराः सर्वे मोदन्तीहाकुतोभयाः ॥ एवं स्तुत्वा महादेवं स ऋषिः प्रणतोऽभवत् ॥०३-८१-१११॥
sarvas tvam asi lokānāṁ kartā kārayitā ca ha। tvat-prasādāt surāḥ sarve modantīhākutobhayāḥ॥ evaṁ stutvā mahādevaṁ sa ṛṣiḥ praṇato 'bhavat॥03-81-111॥

(All you are of the worlds creator, one who makes others act and indeed. By your grace the gods all rejoice here, free from fear from anywhere. Thus having praised the great god, he the sage having bowed became. (03-81-111))
You are everything, the creator and instigator of all worlds indeed. By your grace, all the gods rejoice here, free from any fear. Thus, having praised the great god, the sage bowed down. (03-81-111)

त्वत्प्रसादान्महादेव तपो मे न क्षरेत वै। पुलस्त्य उवाच॥

(By your grace, O Mahādeva, my austerity may not perish indeed. Pulastya said.)
Pulastya said: "O Mahādeva, may my austerity not perish by your grace."
ततो देवः प्रहृष्टात्मा ब्रह्मर्षिमिदमब्रवीत्। तपस्ते वर्धतां विप्र मत्प्रसादात्सहस्रधा ॥०३-८१-११३॥
tato devaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā brahmarṣim idam abravīt। tapas te vardhatāṃ vipra matprasādāt sahasradhā ॥03-81-113॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; प्रहृष्टात्मा (prahṛṣṭātmā) - with delighted mind; ब्रह्मर्षिम् (brahmarṣim) - to the brahmarṣi; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; ते (te) - your; वर्धताम् (vardhatām) - may increase; विप्र (vipra) - O sage; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my grace; सहस्रधा (sahasradhā) - a thousandfold;]
(Then the god, with delighted mind, to the brahmarṣi, this said: "Austerity your may increase, O sage, by my grace, a thousandfold." (03-81-113))
Then the god, his mind filled with delight, spoke thus to the brahmarṣi: "O sage, by my grace may your austerity increase a thousandfold." (03-81-113)
आश्रमे चेह वत्स्यामि त्वया सार्धं महामुने। सप्तसारस्वते स्नात्वा अर्चयिष्यन्ति ये तु माम् ॥०३-८१-११४॥
āśrame ceha vatsyāmi tvayā sārdhaṃ mahāmune। saptasārasvate snātvā arcayiṣyanti ye tu mām ॥03-81-114॥
[आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I shall stay; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; सप्तसारस्वते (saptasārasvate) - at (the river) Saptasarasvati; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयिष्यन्ति (arcayiṣyanti) - they will worship; ये (ye) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me;]
(In the hermitage and here I shall stay with you together, O great sage. At the Saptasarasvati, having bathed, those who will worship me indeed.)
O great sage, I shall stay here in the hermitage together with you; indeed, those who bathe at the Saptasarasvati and worship me.
न तेषां दुर्लभं किञ्चिदिह लोके परत्र च। सारस्वतं च ते लोकं गमिष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥०३-८१-११५॥
na teṣāṃ durlabhaṃ kiñcid iha loke paratra ca। sārasvataṃ ca te lokaṃ gamiṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ॥03-81-115॥
[न (na) - not; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; दुर्लभं (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; इह (iha) - here; लोके (loke) - in the world; परत्र (paratra) - in the next (world); च (ca) - and; सारस्वतं (sārasvatam) - of Sarasvatī (goddess of learning); च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Not of them difficult to obtain anything here in the world and in the next world; the world of Sarasvatī and they will go, not doubt.)
For them, nothing is difficult to obtain in this world or the next; indeed, they will go to the world of Sarasvatī—there is no doubt about it. (03-81-115)
ततस्त्वौशनसं गच्छेत्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः ॥०३-८१-११६॥
tatastvauśanasaṃ gacchettriṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaśca tapodhanāḥ॥03-81-116॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्व् (tv) - indeed; औशनसं (auśanasaṃ) - Ausanasa (sage Ushanas); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - (one) should go; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - famed; यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahma and others; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics (wealthy in penance);]
(Then indeed, to Ausanasa one should go, famed in the three worlds, where Brahma and other gods, and sages rich in penance, (dwell).)
Then, one should go to the sage Ushanas, renowned in the three worlds, where Brahma and the other gods, as well as sages rich in penance, reside. (03-81-116)
कार्त्तिकेयश्च भगवांस्त्रिसन्ध्यं किल भारत। सांनिध्यमकरोत्तत्र भार्गवप्रियकाम्यया ॥०३-८१-११७॥
kārttikeyas ca bhagavāṁs trisandhyaṁ kila bhārata। sānnidhyam akarot tatra bhārgava-priya-kāmyayā ॥03-81-117॥
[कार्त्तिकेयः (kārttikeyaḥ) - Kārttikeya; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - revered lord; त्रिसन्ध्यम् (trisandhyam) - three-junction (dawn, noon, dusk); किल (kila) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सांनिध्यम् (sānnidhyam) - presence; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; तत्र (tatra) - there; भार्गवप्रियकाम्यया (bhārgava-priya-kāmyayā) - with the desire to please Bhārgava (the descendant of Bhṛgu);]
(Kārttikeya and the revered lord, at the three junctions indeed, O Bhārata, presence made there with the desire to please Bhārgava;)
O Bhārata, the revered Kārttikeya, indeed, made his presence there at the three junctions (dawn, noon, and dusk) with the desire to please Bhārgava. (03-81-117)
कपालमोचनं तीर्थं सर्वपापप्रमोचनम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८१-११८॥
kapālamocanaṃ tīrthaṃ sarvapāpapramocanam। tatra snātvā naravyāghra sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-81-118॥
[कपालमोचनम् (kapālamocanam) - skull-liberating; (liberating from the sin of slaying a brāhmaṇa); तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; sacred ford; सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् (sarvapāpapramocanam) - removal of all sins; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released; is liberated;]
(Kapālamocana holy place, all-sin-removing. There, having bathed, tiger among men, from all sins, is liberated.)
The holy place Kapālamocana is a remover of all sins. O tiger among men, by bathing there, one is freed from all sins. (03-81-118)
अग्नितीर्थं ततो गच्छेत्तत्र स्नात्वा नरर्षभ। अग्निलोकमवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८१-११९॥
agnitīrthaṁ tato gacchet tatra snātvā nararṣabha। agnilokam avāpnoti kulaṁ caiva samuddharet ॥03-81-119॥
[अग्नितीर्थं (agnitīrtham) - the sacred place associated with Agni;​ ततः (tataḥ) - after that;​ गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he should go;​ तत्र (tatra) - there;​ स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed;​ नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - O best of men;​ अग्निलोकम् (agnilokam) - the world of Agni;​ अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains;​ कुलं (kulam) - family;​ च (ca) - and;​ एव (eva) - indeed;​ समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - liberates;​;]
(The Agni sacred place after that he should go; there having bathed, O best of men, the world of Agni attains; family also indeed liberates.)
After that, one should go to the Agni holy spot; there, having bathed, O best of men, he attains the world of Agni and indeed liberates his family. (03-81-119)
विश्वामित्रस्य तत्रैव तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। तत्र स्नात्वा महाराज ब्राह्मण्यमभिजायते ॥०३-८१-१२०॥
viśvāmitrasya tatraiva tīrthaṃ bharatasattama। tatra snātvā mahārāja brāhmaṇyam abhijāyate ॥03-81-120॥
[विश्वामित्रस्य (viśvāmitrasya) - of Viśvāmitra; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - just there; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - holy place; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ब्राह्मण्यम् (brāhmaṇyam) - Brāhmaṇahood; अभिजायते (abhijāyate) - is obtained;]
(O best of the Bharatas, at the very place of Viśvāmitra is a holy site. There, having bathed, O great king, Brāhmaṇahood is obtained.)
O best of the Bharatas, at that very holy place belonging to Viśvāmitra, one who bathes there, O great king, attains Brāhmaṇahood. (3-81-120)
ब्रह्मयोनिं समासाद्य शुचिः प्रयतमानसः। तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र ब्रह्मलोकं प्रपद्यते ॥ पुनात्यासप्तमं चैव कुलं नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८१-१२१॥
brahmayonim samāsādya śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ। tatra snātvā naravyāghra brahmalokaṃ prapadyate॥ punātyāsaptamaṃ caiva kulaṃ nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ॥03-81-121॥
[ब्रह्मयोनिं (brahmayonim) - the source (yoni) of brahman; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with a concentrated mind; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokaṃ) - the world of Brahma; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - attains; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; आसप्तमं (āsaptamaṃ) - up to the seventh; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Having attained the source of brahman, pure, with concentrated mind, having bathed there, O tiger among men, he attains the world of Brahma. He purifies up to the seventh family as well indeed; there is no doubt here.)
Having reached the source of Brahman, pure and with a focused mind, and having bathed there, O best of men, he attains Brahma’s world. He indeed purifies his family up to the seventh generation; there is no doubt about this. (03-81-121)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। पृथूदकमिति ख्यातं कार्त्तिकेयस्य वै नृप ॥ तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत पितृदेवार्चने रतः ॥०३-८१-१२२॥
tato gacchet rājendra tīrthaṃ trailokyaviśrutam। pṛthūdakamiti khyātaṃ kārttikeyasya vai nṛpa ॥ tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta pitṛdevārcane rataḥ ॥03-81-122॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokyaviśrutam) - renowned in the three worlds; पृथूदकम् (pṛthūdakam) - Pṛthūdaka (name of the place); इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - known; कार्त्तिकेयस्य (kārttikeyasya) - of Kārttikeya; वै (vai) - indeed; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - ritual bathing; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; पितृदेवार्चने (pitṛdevārcane) - in the worship of ancestors and gods; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged;]
(Then should go, O king, to the holy place renowned in the three worlds, called Pṛthūdaka, known as Kārttikeya’s indeed, O king. There, ritual bathing should be performed, engaged in the worship of ancestors and gods.)
Then, O king, you should go to the holy place called Pṛthūdaka, famed throughout the three worlds and known as Kārttikeya’s. There, you should perform ritual bathing, being devoted to worshipping the ancestors and gods. (03-81-122)
अज्ञानाज्ज्ञानतो वापि स्त्रिया वा पुरुषेण वा। यत्किञ्चिदशुभं कर्म कृतं मानुषबुद्धिना ॥०३-८१-१२३॥
ajñānāj jñānato vāpi striyā vā puruṣeṇa vā। yatkiñcid aśubhaṁ karma kṛtaṁ mānuṣabuddhinā ॥03-81-123॥
[अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; ज्ञानतः (jñānataḥ) - from knowledge; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; स्त्रिया (striyā) - by a woman; वा (vā) - or; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a man; वा (vā) - or; यत् (yat) - whatever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अशुभम् (aśubham) - unwholesome; कर्म (karma) - action; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; मानुषबुद्धिना (mānuṣabuddhinā) - with human intellect;]
(From ignorance, from knowledge or even, by a woman or by a man or, whatever unwholesome action, done, with human intellect.)
Whether from ignorance or from knowledge, whether done by a woman or by a man, whatever unwholesome action is done with human intellect. (03-81-123)
तत्सर्वं नश्यते तस्य स्नातमात्रस्य भारत। अश्वमेधफलं चापि स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-१२४॥
tatsarvaṃ naśyate tasya snātamātrasya bhārata। aśvamedhaphalaṃ cāpi svargalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-81-124॥
[तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; नश्यते (naśyate) - is destroyed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; स्नातमात्रस्य (snātamātrasya) - of just-bathed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अश्वमेधफलं (aśvamedhaphalaṃ) - fruit of horse sacrifice; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; स्वर्गलोकं (svargalokaṃ) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - he attains;]
(That all is destroyed of him who has just bathed, O Bhārata; also the fruit of a horse sacrifice and the heavenly world he attains.)
O Bhārata, for one who has just bathed, all that (sin or past actions) is destroyed; he also attains the fruit of a horse sacrifice and the heavenly world. (03-81-124)
पुण्यमाहुः कुरुक्षेत्रं कुरुक्षेत्रात्सरस्वतीम्। सरस्वत्याश्च तीर्थानि तीर्थेभ्यश्च पृथूदकम् ॥०३-८१-१२५॥
puṇyam āhuḥ kurukṣetram kurukṣetrāt sarasvatīm। sarasvatyāś ca tīrthāni tīrthebhyaś ca pṛthūdakam॥03-81-125॥
[पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; sacred; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; कुरुक्षेत्रम् (kurukṣetram) - Kurukṣetra; कुरुक्षेत्रात् (kurukṣetrāt) - from Kurukṣetra; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvatī (river); सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvatī; च (ca) - and; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; तीर्थेभ्यः (tīrthebhyaḥ) - than the sacred places; च (ca) - and; पृथूदकम् (pṛthūdakam) - Prithūdaka (a holy place);]
(Holy they say Kurukṣetra; from Kurukṣetra Sarasvatī; of Sarasvatī and sacred places; than the sacred places and Prithūdaka.)
They say Kurukṣetra is holy; from Kurukṣetra, Sarasvatī is holier; of Sarasvatī, the sacred places are holier; and among the sacred places, Prithūdaka is the holiest. (03-81-125)
उत्तमे सर्वतीर्थानां यस्त्यजेदात्मनस्तनुम्। पृथूदके जप्यपरो नैनं श्वोमरणं तपेत् ॥०३-८१-१२६॥
uttame sarvatīrthānāṁ yastyajedātmanastanum। pṛthūdake japyaparo nainaṁ śvomaraṇaṁ tapet॥03-81-126॥
[उत्तमे (uttame) - in the best; (of all); सर्वतीर्थानां (sarvatīrthānāṁ) - of all sacred waters; (tīrtha = pilgrimage site or sacred water); यः (yaḥ) - who; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - abandons; leaves; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of his own self; तनुम् (tanum) - body; पृथूदके (pṛthūdake) - at Pṛthūdaka; (proper noun; a holy place); जप्यपरः (japyaparaḥ) - engaged in recitation; devoted to japa; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him (this one); श्वःमरणम् (śvo-maraṇam) - death on the morrow; (śvaḥ = tomorrow, maraṇam = death); तपेत् (tapet) - afflicts; burns;]
(In the best of all tīrthas, whoever should abandon his own body; at Pṛthūdaka, engaged in recitation, not him does death on the morrow afflict.)
Whoever abandons his body at Pṛthūdaka, the best of all holy places, engaged in japa, for him the fear of death on the morrow does not afflict. (03-81-126)
गीतं सनत्कुमारेण व्यासेन च महात्मना। वेदे च नियतं राजनभिगच्छेत्पृथूदकम् ॥०३-८१-१२७॥
gītaṃ sanatkumāreṇa vyāsena ca mahātmanā। vede ca niyataṃ rājan abhigacchet pṛthūdakam ॥03-81-127॥
[गीतं (gītaṃ) - recited; chanted; सनत्कुमारेण (sanatkumāreṇa) - by Sanatkumāra; व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; वेदे (vede) - in the Veda; च (ca) - and; नियतं (niyataṃ) - established; regulated; राजन् (rājan) - O King; अभिगच्छेत् (abhigacchet) - he should approach; पृथूदकम् (pṛthūdakam) - the broad water (river);]

O King, that which was recited by Sanatkumāra, by Vyāsa and by the great-souled, and also established in the Veda, one should approach the broad waters. (03-81-127)
पृथूदकात्पुण्यतमं नान्यत्तीर्थं नरोत्तम। एतन्मेध्यं पवित्रं च पावनं च न संशयः ॥०३-८१-१२८॥
pṛthūdakāt puṇyatamaṃ nānyat tīrthaṃ narottama। etan medhyaṃ pavitraṃ ca pāvanaṃ ca na saṃśayaḥ ॥03-81-128॥
[पृथूदकात् (pṛthūdakāt) - from Pṛthūdaka;’ पुण्यतमं (puṇyatamam) - most meritorious; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; तीर्थं (tīrthaṃ) - sacred place; नरोत्तम (narottama) - O best of men; एतत् (etat) - this; मेध्यं (medhyam) - pure; पवित्रं (pavitraṃ) - holy; च (ca) - and; पावनं (pāvanaṃ) - purifying; च (ca) - and; न (na) - no; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(O best of men, there is no other sacred place more meritorious than Pṛthūdaka. This is pure, holy and purifying, no doubt.)
O best of men, there is certainly no place of pilgrimage more meritorious than Pṛthūdaka. This place is pure, holy, and sanctifying beyond doubt. (03-81-128)
तत्र स्नात्वा दिवं यान्ति अपि पापकृतो जनाः। पृथूदके नरश्रेष्ठ प्राहुरेवं मनीषिणः ॥०३-८१-१२९॥
tatra snātvā divaṃ yānti api pāpakṛto janāḥ। pṛthūdake naraśreṣṭha prāhurevaṃ manīṣiṇaḥ॥03-81-129॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; दिवं (divaṃ) - to heaven; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; अपि (api) - even; पापकृतः (pāpakṛtaḥ) - evil-doers; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; पृथूदके (pṛthūdake) - at Pṛthūdaka; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they have said; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(There having bathed, to heaven they go even evil-doers people. At Pṛthūdaka, O best of men, they have said thus the wise.)
O best of men, even evil-doers, having bathed there at Pṛthūdaka, go to heaven—thus have the wise said. (03-81-129)
मधुस्रवं च तत्रैव तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-१३०॥
madhusravaṃ ca tatraiva tīrthaṃ bharatasattama. tatra snātvā naro rājan go-sahasra-phalaṃ labheta ॥03-81-130॥
[मधुस्रवं (madhusravam) - that which flows honey; च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गो (go) - cow; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; लभेत् (labheta) - he obtains;]
(That (which) flows honey and right there (is the) sacred place, O best of Bharatas; there, having bathed, man, O king, fruit (of) a thousand cows, he obtains.)
O best of the Bharatas, there is also the sacred place called Madhusrava in that very spot; O king, whoever bathes there will obtain the merit equal to the gift of a thousand cows. (03-81-130)
ततो गच्छेन्नरश्रेष्ठ तीर्थं देव्या यथाक्रमम्। सरस्वत्यारुणायाश्च सङ्गमं लोकविश्रुतम् ॥०३-८१-१३१॥
tato gacchen naraśreṣṭha tīrthaṃ devyā yathākramam। sarasvatyā aruṇāyāś ca saṅgamaṃ lokaviśrutam॥03-81-131॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the goddess; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - according to sequence; सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvatī; अरुणायाः (aruṇāyāḥ) - of Aruṇā; च (ca) - and; सङ्गमम् (saṅgamam) - confluence; लोकविश्रुतम् (lokaviśrutam) - famous in the world;]
(Then should go, O best of men, to the sacred place of the goddess according to sequence; the confluence of Sarasvatī and Aruṇā, famous in the world.)
Then, O best of men, you should proceed to the holy pilgrimage place of the goddess in order; namely, to the famous confluence of Sarasvatī and Aruṇā, renowned in the world. (03-81-131)
त्रिरात्रोपोषितः स्नात्वा मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया। अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां फलं विन्दति मानवः ॥०३-८१-१३२॥
trirātroposhitaḥ snātvā mucyate brahmahatyayā। agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṃ phalaṃ vindati mānavaḥ ॥03-81-132॥
[त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātra-upoṣitaḥ) - one who has fasted for three nights; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is freed; ब्रह्महत्यया (brahmahatyayā) - from the killing of a Brāhmaṇa; अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां (agniṣṭoma-atirātrābhyām) - by (the merit of) Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices; फलं (phalam) - the fruit (result); विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man (human);]
(One who has fasted for three nights, having bathed, is freed from the killing of a Brāhmaṇa. By (the merit of) Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices, a man obtains the fruit.)
After fasting for three nights and bathing, a person is freed from the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa. A man obtains the rewards of Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices. (03-81-132)
आसप्तमं कुलं चैव पुनाति भरतर्षभ। अवतीर्णं च तत्रैव तीर्थं कुरुकुलोद्वह ॥ विप्राणामनुकम्पार्थं दर्भिणा निर्मितं पुरा ॥०३-८१-१३३॥
āsaptamaṃ kulaṃ caiva punāti bharatarṣabha। avatīrṇaṃ ca tatraiva tīrthaṃ kurukulodvaha॥ viprāṇāmanukampārthaṃ darbhiṇā nirmitaṃ purā॥03-81-133॥
[आसप्तमं (āsaptamaṃ) - up to the seventh; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अवतीर्णं (avatīrṇaṃ) - descended; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; तीर्थं (tīrthaṃ) - sacred place; कुरुकुलोद्वह (kurukulodvaha) - O upholder of the Kuru clan; विप्राणाम् (viprāṇām) - for the Brāhmaṇas; अनुकम्पार्थं (anukampārthaṃ) - for the purpose of compassion; दर्भिणा (darbhiṇā) - with darbha grass; निर्मितं (nirmitaṃ) - created; पुरा (purā) - in ancient times;]
(Up to the seventh family indeed it purifies, O best of the Bharatas. Descended and there itself, the sacred place, O upholder of the Kuru clan. For the Brāhmaṇas, for the purpose of compassion, with darbha grass created in ancient times.)
O best of the Bharatas, it purifies up to the seventh generation of the family. There itself, O upholder of the Kuru clan, the sacred place descended. Long ago, for the compassion of the Brāhmaṇas, it was created with darbha grass. (03-81-133)
व्रतोपनयनाभ्यां वा उपवासेन वा द्विजः। क्रियामन्त्रैश्च संयुक्तो ब्राह्मणः स्यान्न संशयः ॥०३-८१-१३४॥
vratopanayanābhyāṃ vā upavāsena vā dvijaḥ। kriyāmantraiś ca saṃyukto brāhmaṇaḥ syān na saṃśayaḥ॥03-81-134॥
[व्रतः (vrataḥ) - vow; उपनयनाभ्यां (upanayanābhyām) - by (either one of) the two initiations; वा (vā) - or; उपवासेन (upavāsena) - by fasting; वा (vā) - or; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born; क्रियामन्त्रैः (kriyāmantraiḥ) - by ritual mantras; च (ca) - and; संयुक्तः (saṃyuktaḥ) - endowed; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; स्यात् (syāt) - may become; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(By vow, by either of the two initiations or by fasting, or the twice-born endowed with ritual mantras and, a brāhmaṇa may become, not (a matter of) doubt.)
A twice-born, by observing vows, either of the two initiatory rituals or by fasting, and being endowed with ritual mantras, may indeed become a brāhmaṇa—there is no doubt about this. (03-81-134)
क्रियामन्त्रविहीनोऽपि तत्र स्नात्वा नरर्षभ। चीर्णव्रतो भवेद्विप्रो दृष्टमेतत्पुरातने ॥०३-८१-१३५॥
kriyā-mantra-vihīno'pi tatra snātvā nararṣabha। cīrṇa-vrato bhaved vipro dṛṣṭam etat purātane ॥03-81-135॥
[क्रिया (kriyā) - ritual action; मन्त्र (mantra) - sacred formula; विहीनः (vihīnaḥ) - devoid of; अपि (api) - even; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - best of men; चीर्णव्रतः (cīrṇa-vrataḥ) - one who has performed the vow; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरातने (purātane) - in ancient (times);]
(Even devoid of ritual actions and mantras, there, having bathed, O best of men, one who has performed the vow becomes a Brāhmaṇa; this has been seen in the ancient (times).)
O best of men, it has been seen in ancient times that even without ritual actions and mantras, simply by bathing there, a Brāhmaṇa who has observed the vow is considered accomplished. (03-81-135)
समुद्राश्चापि चत्वारः समानीताश्च दर्भिणा। येषु स्नातो नरव्याघ्र न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् ॥ फलानि गोसहस्राणां चतुर्णां विन्दते च सः ॥०३-८१-१३६॥
samudrāś cāpi catvāraḥ samānītāś ca darbhiṇā। yeṣu snāto naravyāghra na durgatim avāpnuyāt॥ phalāni gosahasrāṇāṃ caturṇāṃ vindate ca saḥ॥03-81-136॥
[समुद्राः (samudrāḥ) - oceans; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; समानीताः (samānītāḥ) - brought together; च (ca) - and; दर्भिणा (darbhiṇā) - with darbha grass; येषु (yeṣu) - in which; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - misfortune; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - would attain; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; गोसहस्राणां (gosahasrāṇāṃ) - of a thousand cows; चतुर्णां (caturṇāṃ) - of four; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Oceans and also four, brought together with darbha grass, in which bathed tiger among men, not misfortune would attain. The fruits of a thousand cows of four he obtains and.)
If a tiger among men bathes in four oceans brought together with darbha grass, he will not suffer misfortune. He also attains the merit equal to the fruits of giving a thousand cows for each of the four.
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र तीर्थं शतसहस्रकम्। साहस्रकं च तत्रैव द्वे तीर्थे लोकविश्रुते ॥०३-८१-१३७॥
tato gacchet rājendra tīrthaṃ śatasahasrakam। sāhasrakaṃ ca tatraiva dve tīrthe lokaviśrute ॥03-81-137॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; शतसहस्रकम् (śatasahasrakam) - the hundred-thousanded (i.e. called Śatasahasraka); साहस्रकम् (sāhasrakam) - Sahasraka (thousanded, i.e. called Sāhasraka); च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; द्वे (dve) - two; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - holy places; लोकविश्रुते (lokaviśrute) - famous in the world;]
(From there, one should go, O best of kings, to the holy place of Śatasahasraka. And also Sāhasraka, right there, two holy places famous in the world.)
Then, O King, proceed from there to the sacred site known as Śatasahasraka; and likewise to Sāhasraka, both renowned holy places in the world. (03-81-137)
उभयोर्हि नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। दानं वाप्युपवासो वा सहस्रगुणितं भवेत् ॥०३-८१-१३८॥
ubhayor hi naraḥ snātvā gosahasraphalaṁ labhet। dānaṁ vāpyupavāso vā sahasraguṇitaṁ bhavet॥03-81-138॥
[उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; हि (hi) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलम् (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain; दानम् (dānam) - charity; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; उपवासः (upavāsaḥ) - fasting; वा (vā) - or; सहस्रगुणितम् (sahasraguṇitam) - multiplied a thousand times; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become;]
(Of both indeed, a man having bathed, may obtain the fruit of a thousand cows. Charity or even fasting or may become multiplied a thousand times.)
Indeed, by bathing at both (places), a man may obtain the merit equal to giving a thousand cows. Charity or fasting performed there becomes multiplied a thousand times. (03-81-138)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र रेणुकातीर्थमुत्तमम्। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत पितृदेवार्चने रतः ॥ स्रवपापविशुद्धात्मा अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८१-१३९॥
tato gacchet rājendra reṇukātīrtham uttamam। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta pitṛdevārcane rataḥ॥ sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā agniṣṭomaphalaṃ labheta॥03-81-139॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then;​ गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go;​ राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king;​ रेणुकातीर्थम् (reṇukātīrtham) - Reṇukā sacred place;​ उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;​ तत्र (tatra) - there;​ अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - ablution;​ कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform;​ पितृदेव-अर्चने (pitṛdeva-arcane) - in worship of ancestors and gods;​ रतः (rataḥ) - devoted;​ सर्वपाप-विशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpa-viśuddhātmā) - with mind purified from all sins;​ अग्निष्टोम-फलम् (agniṣṭoma-phalam) - fruit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice;​ लभेत् (labheta) - obtains;​;]
(Then should go, O king, to the excellent Reṇukā sacred place. There should perform ablution, devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods. With mind purified from all sins, obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-139))
Then, O king, he should go to the excellent Reṇukā tīrtha. There, being devoted to the worship of the ancestors and gods, he should perform ablution. With his mind purified from all sins, he gains the fruit equal to that of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-139)
विमोचनमुपस्पृश्य जितमन्युर्जितेन्द्रियः। प्रतिग्रहकृतैर्दोषैः सर्वैः स परिमुच्यते ॥०३-८१-१४०॥
vimocanam upaspṛśya jita-manyur jitendriyaḥ। pratigrahakṛtaiḥ doṣaiḥ sarvaiḥ sa parimucyate ॥03-81-140॥
[विमोचनम् (vimocanam) - release; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - after having touched; जितमन्युः (jita-manyuḥ) - one who has conquered anger; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; प्रतिग्रहकृतैः (pratigrahakṛtaiḥ) - caused by receiving gifts; दोषैः (doṣaiḥ) - by faults; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; सः (saḥ) - he; परिमुच्यते (parimucyate) - is completely released;]
(Release, after having touched, one who has conquered anger, one who has conquered the senses, by all faults caused by receiving gifts, he is completely released.)
After touching release, one who has conquered anger and the senses is completely freed from all faults caused by accepting gifts. (03-81-140)
ततः पञ्चवटं गत्वा ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। पुण्येन महता युक्तः सतां लोके महीयते ॥०३-८१-१४१॥
tataḥ pañcavaṭaṃ gatvā brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। puṇyena mahatā yuktaḥ satāṃ loke mahīyate॥03-81-141॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पञ्चवटं (pañcavaṭam) - to Pañcavaṭa; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - brahmacārī; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are conquered; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by merit; महताअ (mahatā) - great; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; सतां (satām) - of the virtuous; लोके (loke) - in the world; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honoured;]
(Then, having gone to Pañcavaṭa, the brahmacārī, one whose senses are conquered, endowed with great merit, is honoured in the world of the virtuous.)
Then, going to Pañcavaṭa, the brahmacārī who has conquered his senses and is endowed with great merit, is honoured among the virtuous in the world. (03-81-141)
यत्र योगेश्वरः स्थाणुः स्वयमेव वृषध्वजः। तमर्चयित्वा देवेशं गमनादेव सिध्यति ॥०३-८१-१४२॥
yatra yogeśvaraḥ sthāṇuḥ svayameva vṛṣadhvajaḥ। tam arcayitvā deveśaṃ gamanādeva sidhyati॥03-81-142॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; योगेश्वरः (yogeśvaraḥ) - the lord of yoga; स्थाणुः (sthāṇuḥ) - the immovable one; स्वयमेव (svayameva) - himself indeed; वृषध्वजः (vṛṣadhvajaḥ) - the one whose banner is a bull; तम् (tam) - him; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; देवेशम् (deveśam) - the lord of the gods; गमनात् (gamanāt) - by approach; एव (eva) - certainly; सिध्यति (sidhyati) - accomplishes;]
(Where the lord of yoga, the immovable one, himself indeed, the bull-bannered one—having worshipped him, the lord of the gods, simply by approach, it is accomplished.)
Where the Lord of Yoga, Sthāṇu, the bull-bannered one himself resides—having worshipped that lord of the gods, one attains success simply by approaching him. (03-81-142)
औजसं वरुणं तीर्थं दीप्यते स्वेन तेजसा। यत्र ब्रह्मादिभिर्देवैरृषिभिश्च तपोधनैः ॥०३-८१-१४३॥
aujasaṃ varuṇaṃ tīrthaṃ dīpyate svena tejasā। yatra brahmādibhirdevairṛṣibhiśca tapodhanaiḥ ॥03-81-143॥
[औजसं (aujasaṃ) - having strength; वरुणं (varuṇam) - Varuṇa; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; दीप्यते (dīpyate) - shines; स्वेन (svena) - by own; तेजसा (tejasā) - splendor; यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादिभिः (brahmādibhiḥ) - by Brahmā and others; दैवैः (devaiḥ) - by gods; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; च (ca) - and; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by ascetics;]
(The powerful Varuṇa-tīrtha shines by its own splendor where, by Brahmā and others, by gods, by sages, and by ascetics.)
The powerful sacred place of Varuṇa shines with its own radiance, where Brahmā and other gods, sages, and ascetics reside. (03-81-143)
सेनापत्येन देवानामभिषिक्तो गुहस्तदा ॥०३-८१-१४३॥
senāpatyena devānām abhiṣikto guhas tadā ॥03-81-143॥
[सेनापत्येन (senāpatyena) - with the office of commander; (by/with the army chiefship); देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; गुहः (guhaḥ) - Guha (Kārttikeya, proper noun); तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Guha then anointed with the office of commander of the gods.)
Then Guha was anointed as the commander of the gods. (03-81-143)
औजसस्य तु पूर्वेण कुरुतीर्थं कुरूद्वह। कुरुतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः ॥ सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा कुरुलोकं प्रपद्यते ॥०३-८१-१४४॥
aujasasya tu pūrveṇa kurutīrthaṃ kurūdvaha। kurutīrthe naraḥ snātvā brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ ॥ sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā kurulokaṃ prapadyate ॥03-81-144॥

(Of Ojasas, however, to the east is Kuru-tirtha, O best of Kurus. In Kuru-tirtha, a man, having bathed, being a celibate and self-restrained, whose self is purified from all sins, attains the world of the Kurus. (03-81-144))
However, to the east of Ojasas is the Kuru-tirtha, O best of Kurus. One who bathes at Kuru-tirtha, observing celibacy and self-restraint, and whose self is purified from all sins, attains the world of the Kurus. (03-81-144)
स्वर्गद्वारं ततो गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः। स्वर्गलोकमवाप्नोति ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-१४५॥
svargadvāraṃ tato gacchenniyato niyatāśanaḥ। svargalokamavāpnoti brahmalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-81-145॥

(Heaven’s gate then one should go, disciplined, having regulated food. Heavenly world attains, to the realm of Brahman and goes.)
After that, one with discipline and regulated food should go to the gate of heaven; he attains the heavenly world and also goes to the realm of Brahman. (03-81-145)
ततो गच्छेदनरकं तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-१४६॥

(Thereafter, O lord of men, the devotee of holy places should go to Anaraka; there, having bathed, a man, O king, would not obtain a bad state.)
After that, O king, the devotee of holy places should go to Anaraka; there, having bathed, a man, O king, will not fall into misfortune. (03-81-146)
तत्र ब्रह्मा स्वयं नित्यं देवैः सह महीपते। अन्वास्यते नरश्रेष्ठ नारायणपुरोगमैः ॥०३-८१-१४७॥

There, O king, Brahmā himself is always accompanied by the gods, with Nārāyaṇa at their head, O best of men. (03-81-147)
सांनिध्यं चैव राजेन्द्र रुद्रपत्न्याः कुरूद्वह। अभिगम्य च तां देवीं न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-१४८॥
sānnidhyaṁ caiva rājendra rudrapatnyāḥ kurūdvaḥa। abhigamya ca tāṁ devīṁ na durgatim avāpnuyāt ॥03-81-148॥

(Proximity indeed, O king, to Rudra's wife, O descendant of Kuru; having approached that goddess, will not attain bad state.)
O king, O descendant of Kuru, one who approaches the presence of Rudra's wife, that goddess, will not meet with misfortune. (03-81-148)
तत्रैव च महाराज विश्वेश्वरमुमापतिम्। अभिगम्य महादेवं मुच्यते सर्वकिल्बिषैः ॥०३-८१-१४९॥

(At the holy place indeed, having bathed of all the gods, he, O best among men, from all sufferings having been freed, shines like the moon always.)

ततः स्वस्तिपुरं गच्छेत्तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। पावनं तीर्थमासाद्य तर्पयेत्पितृदेवताः ॥ अग्निष्टोमस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८१-१५२॥

(Then, to Svastipura should go the tirtha-seeking king. Having reached the purifying holy place, he should satisfy the manes and the gods. The man obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)
Then, the tirtha-seeking king should go to Svastipura. Having reached the purifying tirtha, he should offer oblations to the manes and the gods. The man thereby attains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-81-152)
गङ्गाह्रदश्च तत्रैव कूपश्च भरतर्षभ। तिस्रः कोट्यस्तु तीर्थानां तस्मिन्कूपे महीपते ॥ तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्स्वर्गलोकं प्रपद्यते ॥०३-८१-१५३॥
gaṅgā-hradaś ca tatraiva kūpaś ca bharatarṣabha। tisraḥ koṭyas tu tīrthānāṃ tasmin kūpe mahīpate॥ tatra snātvā naro rājan svargalokaṃ prapadyate॥03-81-153॥

(Ganga-pool and in that very place a well also, O bull among Bharatas. Three crores indeed of sacred places in that well, O king. There, having bathed, man, O king, heavenly world attains. (03-81-153))
O bull among the Bharatas, there in that very place is the Ganga pool and also a well. In that well, O king, there are indeed three crore sacred places. He who bathes there, O king, attains the world of heaven. (03-81-153)
आपगायां नरः स्नात्वा अर्चयित्वा महेश्वरम्। गाणपत्यमवाप्नोति कुलं चोद्धरते स्वकम् ॥०३-८१-१५४॥
āpagāyāṃ naraḥ snātvā arcayitvā maheśvaram। gāṇapatyam avāpnoti kulaṃ ca uddharate svakam॥03-81-154॥

(In the river, a man, having bathed and having worshipped Maheśvara, the state of Gaṇapati he attains, and his own family he uplifts.)
If a man, having bathed in the river, worships Maheśvara, he attains the status of Gaṇapati and uplifts his own family. (03-81-154)
ततः स्थाणुवटं गच्छेत्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। तत्र स्नात्वा स्थितो रात्रिं रुद्रलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८१-१५५॥
tataḥ sthāṇuvaṭaṃ gacchetriṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। tatra snātvā sthito rātriṃ rudralokam avāpnuyāt ॥03-81-155॥

(Then, to the banyan tree of Sthāṇu (Śiva), famous in the three worlds, one should go. There, having bathed, remaining during the night, one may attain the world of Rudra. (03-81-155))

badarīpācanaṃ gacched vasiṣṭhasyāśramaṃ tataḥ। badaraṃ bhakṣayet tatra trirātrupoṣito naraḥ॥03-81-156॥

(One should go to Badarīpācana, (to) the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha, from there. The man who has fasted for three nights should eat jujube there.)

सम्यग्द्वादश वर्षाणि बदरान्भक्षयेत्तु यः। त्रिरात्रोपोषितश्चैव भवेत्तुल्यो नराधिप ॥०३-८१-१५७॥
samyag-dvādaśa varṣāṇi badarān bhakṣayet tu yaḥ। trirātrupoṣitaś ca eva bhavet tulyaḥ narādhipa ॥03-81-157॥
[सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; बदरान् (badarān) - jujube fruits; भक्षयेत् (bhakṣayet) - should eat; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्रि-रात्र-उपोषितः (tri-rātra-upoṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king;]
(One who, properly, for twelve years, should eat jujube fruits, but who, having fasted for three nights, indeed becomes equal to a king.)

एकरात्रं समासाद्य एकरात्रोषितो नरः। नियतः सत्यवादी च ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ॥०३-८१-१५९॥
ekarātraṁ samāsādya ekarātroṣito naraḥ। niyataḥ satyavādī ca brahmaloke mahīyate॥03-81-159॥
[एकरात्रम् (ekarātram) - one night; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; एकरात्रोषितः (ekarātroṣitaḥ) - having spent one night; नरः (naraḥ) - man; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - truth-speaking; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahma; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having attained (stayed) for one night, a man who has spent one night, self-controlled and truth-speaking and, in the world of Brahma, is honored.)
A self-controlled and truthful man who spends one night (as required) is honored in the world of Brahma. (03-81-159)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। आदित्यस्याश्रमो यत्र तेजोराशेर्महात्मनः ॥०३-८१-१६०॥
tato gacchet dharmajña tīrthaṁ trailokyaviśrutam। ādityasyāśramo yatra tejorāśermahātmanaḥ ॥03-81-160॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokyaviśrutam) - famous in the three worlds; आदित्यस्य (ādityasya) - of Āditya (the Sun); आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; यत्र (yatra) - where; तेजः-राशेः (tejaḥ-rāśeḥ) - of the mass of brilliance; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(From there one should go, O knower of dharma, to the holy place famous in the three worlds; where is the hermitage of Āditya, of the mass of brilliance, of the great-souled.)
From there, O knower of dharma, one should go to the sacred place renowned throughout the three worlds, where stands the hermitage of Āditya, the illustrious and great-souled one. (03-81-160)
तस्मिंस्तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा पूजयित्वा विभावसुम्। आदित्यलोकं व्रजति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८१-१६१॥
tasmiṁs tīrthe naraḥ snātvā pūjayitvā vibhāvasum। āditya-lokaṁ vrajati kulaṁ caiva samuddharet॥03-81-161॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - in the sacred place; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; विभावसुम् (vibhāvasum) - Agni (the fire god); आदित्यलोकं (ādityalokaṁ) - the world of the Sun; व्रजति (vrajati) - goes; कुलं (kulaṁ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - uplifts;]
(In that sacred place, man having bathed, having worshipped Agni, the world of the Sun goes, family and indeed uplifts.)
In that sacred place, a man who bathes and worships Agni attains the world of the Sun and indeed uplifts his family. (03-81-161)
सोमतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा तीर्थसेवी कुरूद्वह। सोमलोकमवाप्नोति नरो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८१-१६२॥
somatīrthe naraḥ snātvā tīrthasevī kurūdvaha। somalokam avāpnoti naro nāsty atra saṁśayaḥ ॥03-81-162॥
[सोमतीर्थे (somatīrthe) - in Soma-tirtha; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - devoted to holy places; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus; सोमलोकम् (somalokam) - the world of Soma; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In Soma-tirtha a man, having bathed, devoted to holy places, O best of the Kurus, the world of Soma attains a man, there is not here doubt.)
O best of the Kurus, if a man bathes at Soma-tirtha and is devoted to holy places, he attains the world of Soma. There is no doubt about this. (03-81-162)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ दधीचस्य महात्मनः। तीर्थं पुण्यतमं राजन्पावनं लोकविश्रुतम् ॥०३-८१-१६३॥
tato gacchet dharmajña dadhīcyasya mahātmanaḥ। tīrthaṃ puṇyatamaṃ rājan pāvanaṃ lokaviśrutam ॥03-81-163॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; दधीचस्य (dadhīcyasya) - of Dadhīci; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - holy place; पुण्यतमं (puṇyatamam) - most sacred; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पावनं (pāvanam) - purifying; लोकविश्रुतम् (lokaviśrutam) - renowned in the world;]
(Then should go knower of dharma to the great-souled Dadhīci's holy place, most sacred, O king, purifying, renowned in the world.)
Then, O king, the knower of dharma should go to the most sacred and purifying holy place of the great-souled Dadhīci, which is renowned throughout the world. (03-81-163)
यत्र सारस्वतो राजन्सोऽङ्गिरास्तपसो निधिः। तस्मिंस्तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा वाजपेयफलं लभेत् ॥ सारस्वतीं गतिं चैव लभते नात्र संशयः ॥०३-८१-१६४॥
yatra sārasvato rājanso'ṅgirāstapaso nidhiḥ। tasmiṁstīrthe naraḥ snātvā vājapeyaphalaṁ labhet ॥ sārasvatīṁ gatiṁ caiva labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ ॥03-81-164॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; सारस्वतः (sārasvataḥ) - Sārasvata (sage); राजन् (rājan) - O king; सः (saḥ) - he; अङ्गिराः (aṅgirāḥ) - Aṅgirā (the sage); तपसः (tapasah) - of austerity; निधिः (nidhiḥ) - treasure; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - holy place; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; वाजपेयफलं (vājapeyaphalaṁ) - fruit of Vajapeya sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains; सारस्वतीं (sārasvatīṁ) - Sarasvatī (goddess/river); गतिं (gatiṁ) - destination; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; लभते (labhate) - obtains; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Where Sārasvata, O king, he Aṅgirā, treasure of austerity; in that holy place, a man having bathed obtains the fruit of the Vajapeya sacrifice. Sarasvatī's destination and indeed obtains, not here doubt. (03-81-164))
O king, wherever Sārasvata, who is Aṅgirā and the treasure of austerity, resides—at that sacred place, a man who bathes there obtains the fruit of the Vajapeya sacrifice. He surely attains the path of Sarasvatī; of this there is no doubt. (03-81-164)
ततः कन्याश्रमं गच्छेन्नियतो ब्रह्मचर्यवान्। त्रिरात्रोपोषितो राजन्नुपवासपरायणः ॥ लभेत्कन्याशतं दिव्यं ब्रह्मलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८१-१६५॥
tataḥ kanyāśramaṃ gacchenniyato brahmacaryavān। trirātrupoṣito rājannupavāsaparāyaṇaḥ ॥ labhet kanyāśataṃ divyaṃ brahmalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-81-165॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; कन्याश्रमं (kanyāśramam) - hermitage of girls; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; ब्रह्मचर्यवान् (brahmacaryavān) - practicing celibacy; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātrupoṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उपवासपरायणः (upavāsaparāyaṇaḥ) - dedicated to fasting; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains; कन्याशतम् (kanyāśatam) - one hundred maidens; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokam) - the world of Brahma; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Thereafter, to the hermitage of girls should go, self-controlled, practicing celibacy; having fasted for three nights, O king, dedicated to fasting. He obtains one hundred divine maidens and goes to the world of Brahma.)
Therefore, O King, one who is self-controlled, celibate, and dedicated to fasting, having fasted for three nights, should go to the hermitage of girls. Such a person obtains one hundred divine maidens and attains the world of Brahma. (03-81-165)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ तीर्थं संनिहितीमपि। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः ॥ मासि मासि समायान्ति पुण्येन महतान्विताः ॥०३-८१-१६६॥
tato gacchet dharmajña tīrthaṃ saṃnihitīm api। yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaś ca tapodhanāḥ ॥ māsi māsi samāyānti puṇyena mahatānvitāḥ ॥03-81-166॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - one who knows dharma; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - the sacred place; संनिहितीम् (saṃnihitīm) - Sanihiti (name of the place); अपि (api) - also; यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahma and others; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; च (ca) - and; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - those whose wealth is austerity; मासि मासि (māsi māsi) - month by month; समायान्ति (samāyānti) - come together; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by merit; महतान्विताः (mahatānvitāḥ) - endowed with greatness;]
(Thereafter should go one who knows dharma to the sacred place Sanihiti also; where Brahma and others, gods, seers and those whose wealth is austerity, month by month come together, by merit endowed with greatness.)
After that, a knower of dharma should proceed to the holy place called Sanihiti, where Brahma and other gods and seers rich in austerity gather every month, endowed with great merit. (03-81-166)
संनिहित्यामुपस्पृश्य राहुग्रस्ते दिवाकरे। अश्वमेधशतं तेन इष्टं भवति शाश्वतम् ॥०३-८१-१६७॥
saṁnihityām upaspṛśya rāhugraste divākare. aśvamedhaśataṁ tena iṣṭaṁ bhavati śāśvatam ॥03-81-167॥
[संनिहित्याम् (saṁnihityām) - when assembled; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - after purifying by touching water; राहुग्रस्ते (rāhūgraste) - when eclipsed by Rāhu; दिवाकरे (divākare) - in the sun; अश्वमेधशतम् (aśvamedhaśatam) - a hundred Ashvamedha sacrifices; तेन (tena) - by that; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - sacrificed; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(When assembled, after purifying by touching water, when the sun is eclipsed by Rāhu, by that, a hundred Ashvamedha sacrifices are sacrificed, it becomes eternal.)
When people are gathered and purify themselves by touching water during a solar eclipse caused by Rāhu, then offering sacrifices equals a hundred Ashvamedha rituals, resulting in eternal merit. (03-81-167)
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि अन्तरिक्षचराणि च। नद्यो नदास्तडागाश्च सर्वप्रस्रवणानि च ॥०३-८१-१६८॥
pṛthivyāṃ yāni tīrthāni antarikṣa-carāṇi ca| nadyo nadāstaḍāgāś ca sarva-prasravaṇāni ca ॥03-81-168॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; यानि (yāni) - which; (those things) तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; अन्तरिक्षचराणि (antarikṣa-carāṇi) - moving in the atmosphere; च (ca) - and; नद्यो (nadyaḥ) - rivers; नदाः (nadāḥ) - streams; तडागाः (taḍāgāḥ) - ponds; च (ca) - and; सर्वप्रस्रवणानि (sarva-prasravaṇāni) - all springs; च (ca) - and;]
(On earth, which holy places, (and those) moving in the atmosphere and rivers, streams, ponds and all springs and.)
All the holy places on earth, those moving in the atmosphere, as well as rivers, streams, ponds, and all springs. (03-81-168)
उदपानाश्च वप्राश्च पुण्यान्यायतनानि च। मासि मासि समायान्ति संनिहित्यां न संशयः ॥०३-८१-१६९॥
udapānāś ca vaprāś ca puṇyāny āyatanāni ca। māsi māsi samāyānti saṃnihityāṃ na saṃśayaḥ ॥03-81-169॥
[उदपानाः (udapānāḥ) - wells; च (ca) - and; वप्राः (vaprāḥ) - embankments; च (ca) - and; पुण्यानि (puṇyāni) - meritorious; आयतनानि (āyatanāni) - shrines; च (ca) - and; मासि मासि (māsi māsi) - every month; समायान्ति (samāyānti) - come together; संनिहित्याम् (saṃnihityām) - at the holy gathering; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Wells and embankments and meritorious shrines and every month come together at the holy gathering, there is no doubt.)
Wells, embankments, and sacred shrines certainly converge at the holy gathering every month; there is no doubt about this. (03-81-169)
यत्किञ्चिद्दुष्कृतं कर्म स्त्रिया वा पुरुषस्य वा। स्नातमात्रस्य तत्सर्वं नश्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ पद्मवर्णेन यानेन ब्रह्मलोकं स गच्छति ॥०३-८१-१७०॥
yatkiñcid duṣkṛtaṃ karma striyā vā puruṣasya vā। snātamātrasya tatsarvaṃ naśyate nātra saṃśayaḥ॥ padmavarṇena yānena brahmalokaṃ sa gacchati॥03-81-170॥
[यत्किञ्चिद् (yat kiñcit) - whatever little; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; कर्म (karma) - action; स्त्रिया (striyā) - of a woman; वा (vā) - or; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; वा (vā) - or; स्नातमात्रस्य (snātamātrasya) - of one who has just bathed; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; नश्यते (naśyate) - is destroyed; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; पद्मवर्णेन (padmavarṇena) - with a lotus-colored; यानेन (yānena) - vehicle; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokam) - the world of Brahma; स (sa) - he; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Whatever little evil deed, action of a woman or of a man, of one who has just bathed, that all is destroyed; not here (is) doubt. With a lotus-colored vehicle, the world of Brahma he goes.)
Whatever minor evil actions a woman or a man may have done, all of them are destroyed for one who has just bathed; there is no doubt about this. He goes to the world of Brahma in a lotus-colored vehicle. (03-81-170)
अभिवाद्य ततो यक्षं द्वारपालमरन्तुकम्। कोटिरूपमुपस्पृश्य लभेद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८१-१७१॥
abhivādya tato yakṣaṃ dvārapālam arantukam। koṭi-rūpam upaspṛśya labhet bahu suvarṇakam ॥03-81-171॥
[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having greeted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; यक्षं (yakṣam) - the Yakṣa; (spirit being) द्वारपालम् (dvārapālam) - doorkeeper; अरन्तुकम् (arantukam) - named Arantuka; कोटिरूपम् (koṭi-rūpam) - in the form of a heap; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; लभेत् (labhet) - would obtain; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold;]
(Having greeted then the Yakṣa, doorkeeper Arantuka, having touched a heap-form, one would obtain much gold.)
After greeting the Yakṣa doorkeeper named Arantuka, by touching the form of the heap, one would obtain much gold. (03-81-171)
गङ्गाह्रदश्च तत्रैव तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। तत्र स्नातस्तु धर्मज्ञ ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः ॥ राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां फलं विन्दति शाश्वतम् ॥०३-८१-१७२॥
gaṅgā-hradaś ca tatraiva tīrthaṃ bharata-sattama। tatra snātas tu dharma-jña brahma-cārī samāhitaḥ ॥ rājasūyāśvamedhābhyāṃ phalaṃ vindati śāśvatam ॥03-81-172॥
[गङ्गाह्रदः (gaṅgā-hradaḥ) - the Ganga-pool; च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy spot; भरतसत्तम (bharata-sattama) - O best of the Bharatas; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; तु (tu) - but; धर्मज्ञः (dharma-jñaḥ) - one who knows dharma; ब्रह्मचारी (brahma-cārī) - celibate student; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - steadfast; राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां (rājasūyāśvamedhābhyām) - by rājasūya and aśvamedha sacrifices; फलं (phalam) - fruit; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(The Ganga-pool and, right there, the holy spot, O best of the Bharatas. There, one having bathed, but who knows dharma, a celibate, steadfast, by rājasūya and aśvamedha sacrifices fruit obtains eternal.)
O best of the Bharatas, there is the Ganga-pool, a holy spot. There, one who is learned in dharma, steadfast, and a celibate, having bathed there, obtains the eternal fruit equal to that of performing the rājasūya and aśvamedha sacrifices. (03-81-172)
पृथिव्यां नैमिषं पुण्यमन्तरिक्षे च पुष्करम्। त्रयाणामपि लोकानां कुरुक्षेत्रं विशिष्यते ॥०३-८१-१७३॥
pṛthivyāṃ naimiṣaṃ puṇyam antarikṣe ca puṣkaram। trayāṇām api lokānāṃ kurukṣetraṃ viśiṣyate ॥03-81-173॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; नैमिषं (naimiṣam) - Naimisha; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - sacred; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; च (ca) - and; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Pushkara; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - even; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; कुरुक्षेत्रम् (kurukṣetram) - Kurukshetra; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished;]
(On the earth, Naimisha is sacred; in the sky, Pushkara; even among the three worlds, Kurukshetra is distinguished.)
On earth, Naimisha is holy; in heaven, Pushkara; but among all three worlds, Kurukshetra is most distinguished. (03-81-173)
पांसवोऽपि कुरुक्षेत्रे वायुना समुदीरिताः। अपि दुष्कृतकर्माणं नयन्ति परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८१-१७४॥
pāṁsavo'pi kurukṣetre vāyunā samudīritāḥ। api duṣkṛtakarmāṇaṁ nayanti paramāṁ gatim ॥03-81-174॥
[पांसवः (pāṁsavaḥ) - dust particles; अपि (api) - even; कुरुक्षेत्रे (kurukṣetre) - in Kurukṣetra; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; समुदीरिताः (samudīritāḥ) - carried (away); अपि (api) - even; दुष्कृतकर्माणम् (duṣkṛtakarmāṇam) - of one who has committed evil deeds; नयन्ति (nayanti) - lead; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state (destination);]
(Even dust particles in Kurukṣetra, carried by the wind, indeed lead the doer of evil deeds to the supreme state.)
Even dust raised by the wind in Kurukṣetra can lead one who has committed evil deeds to the highest state. (03-81-174)
दक्षिणेन सरस्वत्या उत्तरेण दृषद्वतीम्। ये वसन्ति कुरुक्षेत्रे ते वसन्ति त्रिविष्टपे ॥०३-८१-१७५॥
dakṣiṇena sarasvatyā uttarēṇa dṛṣadvatīm। yē vasanti kurukṣētrē tē vasanti triviṣṭapē ॥03-81-175॥
[दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇena) - by the south; of; सरस्वत्या (sarasvatyā) - by Sarasvatī; उत्तरेण (uttareṇa) - by the north; of; दृषद्वतीम् (dṛṣadvatīm) - Dr̥ṣadvatī (river); ये (ye) - those who; वसन्ति (vasanti) - inhabit; live; dwell; reside; कुरुक्षेत्री (kurukṣētrē) - in Kurukṣetra; (locative); ते (te) - they; those; वसन्ति (vasanti) - inhabit; dwell; live; reside; त्रिविष्टपे (triviṣṭapē) - in Triviṣṭapa (heaven); (locative);]
(By the south of Sarasvatī, by the north of Dr̥ṣadvatī, those who dwell in Kurukṣetra, they dwell in Triviṣṭapa.)
Those who reside in Kurukṣetra, which lies south of the Sarasvatī and north of the Dr̥ṣadvatī, are considered to reside in Triviṣṭapa (heaven). (03-81-175)
कुरुक्षेत्रं गमिष्यामि कुरुक्षेत्रे वसाम्यहम्। अप्येकां वाचमुत्सृज्य सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८१-१७६॥
kurukṣetraṃ gamiṣyāmi kurukṣetre vasāmyaham। apyekāṃ vācam utsṛjya sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-81-176॥
[कुरुक्षेत्रं (kurukṣetram) - Kurukshetra; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; कुरुक्षेत्रे (kurukṣetre) - in Kurukshetra; वसामि (vasāmi) - I dwell; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - even; एकां (ekām) - one; वाचम् (vācam) - word; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having uttered; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(Kurukshetra I will go; in Kurukshetra I dwell I; even one word having uttered, from all sins is released.)
I will go to Kurukshetra; I dwell at Kurukshetra. Even by uttering a single word there, one is released from all sins. (03-81-176)
ब्रह्मवेदी कुरुक्षेत्रं पुण्यं ब्रह्मर्षिसेवितम्। तदावसन्ति ये राजन्न ते शोच्याः कथञ्चन ॥०३-८१-१७७॥
brahmavedī kurukṣetraṃ puṇyaṃ brahmarṣisevitam। tadāvasanti ye rājanna te śocyāḥ kathañcana॥03-81-177॥
[ब्रह्मवेदी (brahmavedī) - altar of Brahman; ceremony ground of Brahman; place of Vedic sacrifice; कुरुक्षेत्रं (kurukṣetram) - Kurukṣetra; sacred region; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - sacred; holy; ब्रह्मर्षिसेवितम् (brahmarṣisevitam) - attended by the Brahmarṣis; served by sage-seers; तत्र (tatra) - there; आवसन्ति (āvasanti) - dwell; reside; ये (ye) - who; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ते (te) - they; शोच्याः (śocyāḥ) - to be lamented; needing to be mourned; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - by any means; in any way;]
(Brahmavedī, Kurukṣetra, holy, attended by Brahmarṣis; there reside who, O king, they not to be lamented by any means.)
O king, those who dwell in the holy Kurukṣetra, the altar of Brahman attended by sage-seers, are never to be mourned in any way. (03-81-177)
तरन्तुकारन्तुकयोर्यदन्तरं; रामह्रदानां च मचक्रुकस्य। एतत्कुरुक्षेत्रसमन्तपञ्चकं; पितामहस्योत्तरवेदिरुच्यते ॥०३-८१-१७८॥
tarantukārantukayoryadantaraṃ; rāmahradānāṃ ca macakrukasya. etatkurukṣetrasamantapañcakaṃ; pitāmahasyottaravedirucyate ॥03-81-178॥
[तरन्तुक (tarantuka) - Tarantuka (name of a place); अरन्तुकयोः (arantukayoḥ) - and Arantuka (genitive dual, of Arantuka); यद् (yad) - which; अन्तरं (antaraṃ) - interval; रामह्रदानाम् (rāmahradānām) - of the Rāma-ponds (genitive plural); च (ca) - and; मचक्रुकस्य (macakrukasya) - of Macakruka; एतत् (etat) - this; कुरुक्षेत्र (kurukṣetra) - Kurukṣetra; समन्तपञ्चकं (samantapañcakaṃ) - Samantapañcaka (the sacred region of five lakes); पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of Pitāmaha (the grandsire); उत्तरवेदि (uttaravedi) - northern altar; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Tarantuka and Arantuka, which interval; of the Rāma-ponds and of Macakruka; this Kurukṣetra Samantapañcaka; of Pitāmaha the northern altar is called.)
The space between Tarantuka and Arantuka, and between the Rāma-ponds and Macakruka—this Samantapañcaka at Kurukṣetra is called the northern altar of Pitāmaha (the grandsire). (03-81-178)
