ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ धर्मतीर्थं पुरातनम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्धर्मशीलः समाहितः ॥ आसप्तमं कुलं राजन्पुनीते नात्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-१॥
tato gacchet dharmajña dharmatīrthaṁ purātanam। tatra snātvā naro rājan dharmaśīlaḥ samāhitaḥ ॥ āsaptamaṁ kulaṁ rājan punīte nātra saṁśayaḥ ॥03-82-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) (gacchet) - should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; धर्मतीर्थं (dharmatīrtham) (dharmatīrtham) - sacred ford of dharma; पुरातनम् (purātanam) (purātanam) - ancient; तत्र (tatra) (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) (naraḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; धर्मशीलः (dharmaśīlaḥ) (dharmaśīlaḥ) - of righteous nature; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; आ सप्तमं (ā saptamam) (ā saptamam) - up to the seventh; कुलं (kulaṁ) (kulaṁ) - family; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; पुनीते (punīte) (punīte) - purifies; न (na) (na) - not; अत्र (atra) (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Then, should go, knower of dharma, to the ancient sacred ford of dharma. There, having bathed, man, O king, of righteous nature, concentrated. Up to the seventh family, O king, he purifies; not here, doubt.)
Then, O king, the knower of dharma should go to the ancient holy tirtha of dharma. There, by bathing with focused and righteous intent, a man purifies his family up to the seventh generation, O king; there is no doubt in this. (03-82-1)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ कारापतनमुत्तमम्। अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति मुनिलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-२॥
tato gacchet dharmajña kārāpatanamuttamam। agniṣṭomamavāpnoti munilokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-82-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; कारापतनम् (kārāpatanam) - Kārāpatana (name of place or merit); उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the highest; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - Agniṣṭoma (Vedic sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - one attains; मुनिलोकं (munilokam) - the world of sages; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - one goes;]
(From there one should go, O knower of dharma, to the highest Kārāpatana; Agniṣṭoma he attains, to the world of sages also he goes.)
From there, the knower of dharma should go to the excellent Kārāpatana. He attains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and goes to the world of sages. (03-82-2)
सौगन्धिकं वनं राजंस्ततो गच्छेत मानवः। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः ॥०३-८२-३॥
saugandhikaṁ vanaṁ rājaṁs tato gacchet mānavaḥ। yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaś ca tapodhanāḥ॥03-82-3॥
[सौगन्धिकं (saugandhikam) - full of fragrant lotuses; वनं (vanam) - forest; राजंस् (rājan) - O king; तत: (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - may go; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; यत्र (yatra) - where; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahmā and others; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - those rich in austerity;]
(A forest of fragrant lotuses, O king, then may go man; where Brahmā and other gods, sages and those rich in austerity (are).)
O king, the man may then go to the forest adorned with fragrant lotuses, where Brahmā and other gods, as well as sages endowed with ascetic power, reside. (3-82-3)
सिद्धचारणगन्धर्वाः किंनराः समहोरगाः। तद्वनं प्रविशन्नेव सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८२-४॥
siddhacāraṇagandharvāḥ kiṁnarāḥ samahoragāḥ। tadvanaṁ praviśanneva sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-82-4॥
[सिद्ध (siddha) - perfected beings;, चारण (cāraṇa) - celestial bards;, गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - heavenly musicians;, किंनराः (kiṁnarāḥ) - kinnaras;, सम (sama) - together;, अहोरगाः (ahoragāḥ) - serpents (nagas);, तद् (tad) - that;, वनम् (vanam) - forest;, प्रविशन् (praviśan) - entering;, एव (eva) - indeed;, सर्व (sarva) - all;, पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - from sins;, प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, together with Nagas; that forest entering indeed, from all sins, is released.)
Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and Nagas—whoever enters that forest is indeed freed from all sins. (03-82-4)
ततो हि सा सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा नदीनामुत्तमा नदी। प्लक्षाद्देवी स्रुता राजन्महापुण्या सरस्वती ॥०३-८२-५॥
tato hi sā saricchreṣṭhā nadīnāmuttamā nadī. plakṣāddevī srutā rājanmahāpuṇyā sarasvatī ॥03-82-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हि (hi) - indeed; सा (sā) - she; सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा (saricchreṣṭhā) - the best among rivers; नदीनाम् (nadīnām) - of rivers; उत्तमा (uttamā) - the highest; नदी (nadī) - river; प्लक्षात् (plakṣāt) - from the fig tree; देवी (devī) - goddess; स्रुता (srutā) - flowed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; महापुण्या (mahāpuṇyā) - greatly meritorious; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvatī (name of the river goddess);]
(Then indeed, she, the best among rivers, the highest of rivers, the river flowed from the fig tree, the goddess, O king, the greatly meritorious Sarasvatī.)
Then, O king, the greatly meritorious goddess Sarasvatī, the best and most excellent of rivers, flowed forth from the fig tree. (03-82-5)
तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत वल्मीकान्निःसृते जले। अर्चयित्वा पितॄन्देवानश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-६॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta valmīkānniḥsṛte jale। arcayitvā pitṝndevaānaśvamedhaphalaṃ labhet ॥03-82-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - ablution; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; वल्मीकात् (valmīkāt) - from the anthill; निःसृते (niḥsṛte) - having flowed; जले (jale) - in water; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; देवान् (devān) - the gods; अश्वमेध (aśvamedha) - aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); फलम् (phalam) - fruit, reward; लभेत् (labhet) - would obtain;]
(There, ablution should perform in water having flowed from the anthill. Having worshipped the ancestors and gods, the fruit of the aśvamedha sacrifice one would obtain.)
There, one should perform an ablution with water that has flowed from the anthill. After worshipping the ancestors and the gods, one obtains the reward of an aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-82-6)
ईशानाध्युषितं नाम तत्र तीर्थं सुदुर्लभम्। षट्सु शम्यानिपातेषु वल्मीकादिति निश्चयः ॥०३-८२-७॥
īśānādhyuṣitaṃ nāma tatra tīrthaṃ sudurlabham| ṣaṭsu śamyānipāteṣu valmīkād iti niścayaḥ॥03-82-7॥
[ईशानाध्युषितम् (īśānādhyuṣitam) - inhabited by Īśāna; नाम (nāma) - named; तत्र (tatra) - there; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; सुदुर्लभम् (sudurlabham) - very difficult to obtain; षट्सु (ṣaṭsu) - among six; शम्यानिपातेषु (śamyānipāteṣu) - where the poles fall; वल्मीकात् (valmīkāt) - from anthill; इति (iti) - thus; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - ascertainment;]
(Inhabited by Īśāna, named there as the sacred place very difficult to obtain, among six where the poles fall, from the anthill—thus (is) the ascertainment.)
There, the sacred place called 'Īśānādhyuṣitam' is very difficult to obtain; it is ascertained to be among the six sites where the (funeral) poles fall, from the anthill. (03-82-7)
कपिलानां सहस्रं च वाजिमेधं च विन्दति। तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र दृष्टमेतत्पुरातने ॥०३-८२-८॥
kapilānāṃ sahasraṃ ca vājimedhaṃ ca vindati। tatra snātvā naravyāghra dṛṣṭam etat purātane ॥03-82-8॥
[कपिलानाम् (kapilānām) - of Kapilas; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; च (ca) - and; वाजिमेधं (vājimedham) - the Aśvamedha sacrifice; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - it is seen; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरातने (purātane) - in the ancient (tradition);]
(Of Kapilas a thousand and the Aśvamedha sacrifice also one obtains; there having bathed, O tiger among men, this is seen in ancient (tradition).)
One who bathes there, O tiger among men, obtains a thousand Kapilas and the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice as seen in ancient tradition. (03-82-8)
सुगन्धां शतकुम्भां च पञ्चयज्ञां च भारत। अभिगम्य नरश्रेष्ठ स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-९॥
sugandhāṃ śatakumbhāṃ ca pañcayajñāṃ ca bhārata। abhigamya naraśreṣṭha svargaloke mahīyate ॥03-82-9॥
[सुगन्धां (sugandhām) - fragrant; शतकुम्भां (śatakumbhām) - having a hundred jars; च (ca) - and; पञ्चयज्ञां (pañcayajñām) - connected to the five sacrifices; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - after approaching; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the world of heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(The fragrant, having a hundred jars, and the five sacrifices, O Bhārata, having been approached, O best of men, in the world of heaven is honored.)
O Bhārata, the fragrant one endowed with a hundred jars and connected to the five sacrifices, when approached, O best of men, is honored in the world of heaven. (03-82-9)
त्रिशूलखातं तत्रैव तीर्थमासाद्य भारत। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत पितृदेवार्चने रतः ॥ गाणपत्यं स लभते देहं त्यक्त्वा न संशयः ॥०३-८२-१०॥
triśūlakhātaṁ tatraiva tīrtham āsādya bhārata. tatrābhiṣekaṁ kurvīta pitṛdevārcane rataḥ ॥ gāṇapatyaṁ sa labhate dehaṁ tyaktvā na saṁśayaḥ ॥03-82-10॥
[त्रिशूलखातं (triśūlakhātam) - in the trench of the trident; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - just there; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - ablution; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; पितृदेवार्चने (pitṛdevārcane) - in the worship of ancestors and gods; रतः (rataḥ) - being engaged; गाणपत्यं (gāṇapatyam) - the state of Gāṇapati (attaining Ganapati); सः (saḥ) - he; लभते (labhate) - obtains; देहम् (deham) - body; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In the trench of the trident, just there, having approached the holy place, O Bhārata, there one should perform ablution, being engaged in worship of ancestors and gods. He, having abandoned the body, attains the state of Gāṇapati, not (is there) doubt.)
O Bhārata, having approached the holy place at the trench of the trident right there, one should perform ablutions, being devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods. Having abandoned his body, he attains the state of Gāṇapati—there is no doubt. (03-82-10)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र देव्याः स्थानं सुदुर्लभम्। शाकम्भरीति विख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥०३-८२-११॥
tato gacchet rājendra devyāḥ sthānaṃ sudurlabham। śākambharīti vikhyātā triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā ॥03-82-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the goddess; स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; सुदुर्लभम् (sudurlabham) - very difficult to attain; शाकम्भरी (śākambharī) - Śākambharī; इति (iti) - thus; विख्याता (vikhyātā) - well-known; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - widely heard of;]
(Then one should go, O king, to the abode of the goddess, very difficult to attain. Śākambharī thus well-known, in the three worlds, widely heard of.)
Then, O king, one should proceed to the goddess's abode, which is very hard to obtain. Śākambharī, as she is called, is renowned throughout the three worlds. (03-82-11)
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं हि शाकेन किल सुव्रत। आहारं सा कृतवती मासि मासि नराधिप ॥०३-८२-१२॥
divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ hi śākena kila suvrata। āhāraṁ sā kṛtavatī māsi māsi narādhipa ॥03-82-12॥
[दिव्यं (divyaṁ) - divine; वर्षसहस्रं (varṣasahasraṁ) - thousand years; हि (hi) - indeed; शाकेन (śākena) - with vegetables; किल (kila) - it is said; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O virtuous one; आहारं (āhāraṁ) - food; सा (sā) - she; कृतवती (kṛtavatī) - made; मासि मासि (māsi māsi) - month by month; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Divine thousand years indeed with vegetables it is said, O virtuous one, food she made month by month, O king.)
O king, it is said that for a divine thousand years, she indeed made her food from vegetables, month by month, O virtuous one. (03-82-12)
ऋषयोऽभ्यागतास्तत्र देव्या भक्त्या तपोधनाः। आतिथ्यं च कृतं तेषां शाकेन किल भारत ॥ ततः शाकम्भरीत्येव नाम तस्याः प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥०३-८२-१३॥
ṛṣayo 'bhyāgatās tatra devyā bhaktyā tapodhanāḥ। ātithyaṃ ca kṛtaṃ teṣāṃ śākena kila bhārata ॥ tataḥ śākambharīty eva nāma tasyāḥ pratiṣṭhitam ॥03-82-13॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; अभ्यागताः (abhyāgatāḥ) - had come; तत्र (tatra) - there; देव्याः (dewyāḥ) - by the goddess; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics (whose wealth is austerity); आतिथ्यं (ātithyam) - hospitality; च (ca) - and; कृतं (kṛtam) - was done; तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; शाकेन (śākena) - with vegetables; किल (kila) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; शाकम्भरी (śākambharī) - Śākambharī; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - name; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - was established;]
(Sages had come there; by the goddess, with devotion, ascetics (whose wealth is austerity). Hospitality also was done for them with vegetables, indeed, O Bhārata. Therefore, Śākambharī—thus, indeed, the name of her was established. (03-82-13))
The sages, ascetics devoted to austerity, came there. The goddess, with devotion, offered them hospitality by serving vegetables, O Bhārata. Therefore, her name became established as 'Śākambharī'. (03-82-13)
शाकम्भरीं समासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। त्रिरात्रमुषितः शाकं भक्षयेन्नियतः शुचिः ॥०३-८२-१४॥
śākambharīṃ samāsādya brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। trirātram uṣitaḥ śākaṃ bhakṣayet niyataḥ śuciḥ॥03-82-14॥
[शाकम्भरीं (śākambharīṃ) - to Śākambharī (goddess related to vegetables); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - brahmacārin (student in celibacy); समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - for three nights; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having dwelled; शाकं (śākaṃ) - vegetables; भक्षयेत् (bhakṣayet) - may eat; नियतः (niyataḥ) - restrained; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure;]
(Having approached Śākambharī, the concentrated brahmacārin, having dwelled for three nights, restrained and pure, may eat vegetables.)
After approaching Śākambharī, the brahmacārin who is focused, having stayed there for three nights, self-restrained and pure, may eat vegetables. (03-82-14)
शाकाहारस्य यत्सम्यग्वर्षैर्द्वादशभिः फलम्। तत्फलं तस्य भवति देव्याश्छन्देन भारत ॥०३-८२-१५॥
śākāhārasya yatsamyagvarṣairdvādaśabhiḥ phalam। tatphalaṃ tasya bhavati devyāśchandena bhārata ॥03-82-15॥
[शाकाहारस्य (śākāhārasya) - of vegetarian diet; यत् (yat) - what; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; वर्षैः (varṣaiḥ) - by years; द्वादशभिः (dvādaśabhiḥ) - twelve; फलम् (phalam) - fruit (result); तत् (tat) - that; फलम् (phalam) - fruit (result); तस्य (tasya) - for him; भवति (bhavati) - becomes (is attained); देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the goddess; छन्देन (chandena) - by the pleasure (will); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of vegetarian diet, what proper fruit (result) by twelve years is; that fruit for him is attained by the will of the goddess, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the result which is properly obtained from twelve years of vegetarianism is granted to him by the will of the goddess. (03-82-15)
ततो गच्छेत्सुवर्णाक्षं त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। यत्र विष्णुः प्रसादार्थं रुद्रमाराधयत्पुरा ॥०३-८२-१६॥
tato gacchetsuvarṇākṣaṃ triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam। yatra viṣṇuḥ prasādārthaṃ rudram ārādhayat purā ॥03-82-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; सुवर्णाक्षम् (suvarṇākṣam) - Suvarṇākṣa (name of a place); त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned; यत्र (yatra) - where; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; प्रसादार्थम् (prasādārtham) - for the sake of favor; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; आराधयत् (ārādhayat) - worshipped; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(From there, one should go to Suvarṇākṣa, renowned in the three worlds, where Viṣṇu, for the sake of favor, worshipped Rudra formerly.)
From there, one should proceed to Suvarṇākṣa, renowned throughout the three worlds, where Viṣṇu once worshipped Rudra for obtaining his favor. (03-82-16)
वरांश्च सुबहूँल्लेभे दैवतेषु सुदुर्लभान्। उक्तश्च त्रिपुरघ्नेन परितुष्टेन भारत ॥०३-८२-१७॥
varāṃś ca subahūn lebhe daivateṣu sudurlabhān। uktaś ca tripuraghnena parituṣṭena bhārata ॥03-82-17॥
[वरान् (varān) - boons; च (ca) - and; सुबहून् (subahūn) - many; लेभे (lebhe) - (he) obtained; दैवतेषु (daivateṣu) - among the divinities; सुदुर्लभान् (sudurlabhān) - very difficult to obtain; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was addressed; च (ca) - and; त्रिपुरघ्नेन (tripuraghnena) - by the destroyer of Tripura (Śiva); परितुष्टेन (parituṣṭena) - being greatly pleased; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(And many boons, very difficult to obtain among the gods, (he) obtained; and (he) was addressed by the destroyer of Tripura, being greatly pleased, O Bhārata.)
He obtained many boons, very difficult even among the gods; and he was addressed by the destroyer of Tripura (Śiva), being highly pleased, O Bhārata. (03-82-17)
अपि चास्मत्प्रियतरो लोके कृष्ण भविष्यसि। त्वन्मुखं च जगत्कृत्स्नं भविष्यति न संशयः ॥०३-८२-१८॥
api cāsmat-priyataro loke kṛṣṇa bhaviṣyasi। tvan-mukhaṁ ca jagat-kṛtsnaṁ bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ॥03-82-18॥
[अपि (api) - and indeed; च (ca) - and; अस्मत् (asmat) - to us; प्रियतरः (priyataraḥ) - dearer; लोके (loke) - in the world; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be; त्वन्मुखं (tvan-mukham) - your face; च (ca) - and; जगत् (jagat) - the world; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(And indeed, dearer to us in the world, Kṛṣṇa, you will be; your face and the entire world will become—there is no doubt.)
And furthermore, in this world, you shall become dearest to us, O Kṛṣṇa; and without a doubt, your face will become the whole world. (03-82-18)
तत्राभिगम्य राजेन्द्र पूजयित्वा वृषध्वजम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति गाणपत्यं च विन्दति ॥०३-८२-१९॥
tatrābhigamya rājendra pūjayitvā vṛṣadhvajam। aśvamedham avāpnoti gāṇapatyaṃ ca vindati॥03-82-19॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; वृषध्वजम् (vṛṣadhvajam) - the Bull-bannered (Śiva); अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; गाणपत्यं (gāṇapatyam) - lordship of Gaṇapati; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains;]
(There having approached O king having worshipped the Bull-bannered, the aśvamedha attains, lordship of Gaṇapati and obtains.)
There, O king, having approached and worshipped the Bull-bannered one (Śiva), one attains the fruit of the horse sacrifice and obtains the lordship of Gaṇapati. (03-82-19)
धूमावतीं ततो गच्छेत्त्रिरत्रोपोषितो नरः। मनसा प्रार्थितान्कामाँल्लभते नात्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-२०॥
dhūmāvatīṃ tato gacchet trir atra upoṣito naraḥ। manasā prārthitān kāmān labhate na atra saṃśayaḥ॥03-82-20॥

(To Dhūmāvatī then should go three times here, having fasted, the man; by mind the desired desires obtains; not here doubt.)
Then, having fasted here, a man should go to Dhūmāvatī three times; he obtains the desires that he has mentally wished for—of this there is no doubt. (03-82-20)
देव्यास्तु दक्षिणार्धेन रथावर्तो नराधिप। तत्रारोहेत धर्मज्ञ श्रद्दधानो जितेन्द्रियः ॥ महादेवप्रसादाद्धि गच्छेत परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८२-२१॥
devyāstu dakṣiṇārdhena rathāvarto narādhipa। tatrāroheta dharmajña śraddadhāno jitendriyaḥ ॥ mahādeva-prasādāddhi gacchet paramāṃ gatim ॥03-82-21॥

(O king, but by the southern half of the Goddess is rathāvarta; there should mount a knower of dharma, endowed with faith, having mastered the senses. Indeed, by Mahādeva's grace, he would attain the supreme goal. (03-82-21))
O king, the southern half of the Goddess is rathāvarta. There, one who knows dharma, who is full of faith, and who has mastered the senses, should mount. Through Mahādeva’s grace, he truly attains the highest goal. (03-82-21)
प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य गच्छेत भरतर्षभ। धारां नाम महाप्राज्ञ सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम् ॥ तत्र स्नात्वा नरव्याघ्र न शोचति नराधिप ॥०३-८२-२२॥
pradakṣiṇam-upāvṛtya gacchet bharatarṣabha. dhārāṃ nāma mahāprājña sarva-pāpa-praṇāśinīm ॥ tatra snātvā naravyāghra na śocati narādhipa ॥03-82-22॥
[प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; (the right-wise direction); उपावृत्य (upāvṛtya) - having turned towards; having approached; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; धारां (dhārāṃ) - Dhara (stream); नाम (nāma) - by name; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O extremely wise one; सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम् (sarva-pāpa-praṇāśinīm) - destroyer of all sins; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; न (na) - not; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king of men;]
(Having turned circumambulation, one should go, O bull among the Bharatas, to Dhara by name, O extremely wise one, destroyer of all sins. There, having bathed, O tiger among men, not grieves, O king of men.)
O best of the Bharatas, turning with circumambulation, you should go to the river named Dhara, O wise one, for she destroys all sins. There, O tiger among men, after bathing, one does not grieve, O king of men. (03-82-22)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ नमस्कृत्य महागिरिम्। स्वर्गद्वारेण यत्तुल्यं गङ्गाद्वारं न संशयः ॥०३-८२-२३॥
tato gacchet dharmajña namaskṛtya mahāgirim। svargadvāreṇa yat tulyaṃ gaṅgādvāraṃ na saṃśayaḥ ॥03-82-23॥

(After that, one who knows dharma should go, having bowed to the great mountain, to Gaṅgādvāra, which is equal to Svargadvāra, not doubt.)
After that, the knower of dharma should proceed, after bowing to the great mountain, to Gaṅgādvāra, which is certainly equal to Svargadvāra, without any doubt. (03-82-23)
तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत कोटितीर्थे समाहितः। पुण्डरीकमवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-२४॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta koṭitīrthe samāhitaḥ। puṇḍarīkam avāpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet॥03-82-24॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - ablution; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; कोटितीर्थे (koṭitīrthe) - at Koṭitīrtha (a sacred place, 'at the Tīrtha called Koṭi'); समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; पुण्डरीकम् (puṇḍarīkam) - puṇḍarīka (a kind of merit or the lotus); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; कुलम् (kulam) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - would uplift;]
(There ablution should perform at Koṭitīrtha concentrated; puṇḍarīka attains, family and indeed would uplift.)
There, one should perform ablution at Koṭitīrtha with concentration; he attains the merit of puṇḍarīka and indeed uplifts his family. (03-82-24)
सप्तगङ्गे त्रिगङ्गे च शक्रावर्ते च तर्पयन्। देवान्पितॄंश्च विधिवत्पुण्यलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-२५॥
saptagaṅge trigaṅge ca śakrāvarte ca tarpayan। devān pitṝṁś ca vidhivat puṇyaloke mahīyate॥03-82-25॥
[सप्तगङ्गे (saptagaṅge) - in Saptagaṅgā; (seven-river confluence); त्रिगङ्गे (trigaṅge) - in Trigaṅgā; (three-river confluence); च (ca) - and; शक्रावर्ते (śakrāvarte) - in Śakrāvarta; (Śakra's whirlpool or tirtha); च (ca) - and; तर्पयन् (tarpayan) - offering libations; देवान् (devān) - the gods; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; च (ca) - and; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to injunction; rightfully; पुण्यलोके (puṇyaloke) - in the meritorious world; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored; is exalted;]
(In Saptagaṅgā, in Trigaṅgā and in Śakrāvarta, offering libations to the gods and ancestors according to injunction, in the meritorious world, is honored.)
One who offers libations to the gods and ancestors according to injunction at Saptagaṅgā, Trigaṅgā, and Śakrāvarta is honored in the world of merit. (03-82-25)
ततः कनखले स्नात्वा त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-२६॥
tataḥ kanakḫale snātvā trirātrupoṣito naraḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; कनखले (kanakḫale) - at Kanakhala; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātrupoṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकं (svargalokaṃ) - the world of heaven; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Thereafter, at Kanakhala, having bathed, having fasted for three nights, the man obtains the Aśvamedha sacrifice, and goes to the world of heaven.)
Thereafter, at Kanakhala, a man who has bathed and fasted for three nights attains the merit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice and goes to heaven. (03-82-26)
कपिलावटं च गच्छेत तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। उष्यैकां रजनीं तत्र गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-२७॥
kapilāvaṭaṃ ca gacchet tīrthasevī narādhipa। uṣyaikāṃ rajanīṃ tatra gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-82-27॥

(Kapilavata and should go, a devotee of holy places, king; having stayed one night there, the reward of a thousand cows one gains.)
The king devoted to holy places should go to Kapilavata; by spending a single night there, one gains the merit equal to giving a thousand cows. (03-82-27)
नागराजस्य राजेन्द्र कपिलस्य महात्मनाः। तीर्थं कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतम् ॥०३-८२-२८॥
nāgarājasya rājendra kapilasya mahātmanāḥ। tīrthaṃ kuruvaraśreṣṭha sarvalokeṣu viśrutam ॥03-82-28॥
[नागराजस्य (nāgarājasya) - of the king of serpents; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; कपिलस्य (kapilasya) - of Kapila; महात्मनाः (mahātmanāḥ) - of the great-souled; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; कुरुवरश्रेष्ठ (kuruvaraśreṣṭha) - O foremost among the Kurus; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned;]
(Of the king of serpents, O best of kings, of (the sage) Kapila, the great-souled one, the sacred place, O foremost of the Kurus, in all worlds renowned.)
O best of kings, the sacred place of the great-souled Kapila, the king of serpents, is renowned in all worlds, O foremost among the Kurus. (03-82-28)
तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत नागतीर्थे नराधिप। कपिलानां सहस्रस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८२-२९॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta nāgatīrthe narādhipa। kapilānāṃ sahasrasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ॥03-82-29॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekaṃ) - sprinkling (ritual bathing); कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should perform; नागतीर्थे (nāgatīrthe) - at Nāga-tīrtha (Nāga sacred place); नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king (lord of men); कपिलानां (kapilānāṃ) - of Kapilā (cows); सहस्रस्य (sahasrasya) - of a thousand; फलम् (phalam) - fruit (result); प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(There, one should perform the abhiṣeka at Nāga-tīrtha, O king. The man obtains the fruit of a thousand Kapilā cows.)
O king, there, one should perform ritual bathing at Nāga-tīrtha; a man obtains the merit equal to that of a thousand Kapilā cows. (03-82-29)
ततो ललितिकां गच्छेच्छन्तनोस्तीर्थमुत्तमम्। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-३०॥
tato lalitikāṃ gacchet chantan astiirtham uttamam। tatra snātvā naro rājann durgatim avāpnuyāt॥03-82-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; ललितिकाम् (lalitikām) - Lalitikā (a proper noun; name of a place); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; शन्तनः (śantanaḥ) - Śantanu (here: a king/famous figure); अस्ति (asti) - there is; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred bathing place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - foremost; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - bad state; misfortune; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - would attain;]
(From there to Lalitikā should go; Śantanu, there is a foremost sacred bathing place. There, having bathed, a man, O king, would not attain a bad state.)
From there, one should proceed to Lalitikā; there is a foremost holy bathing place named after Śantanu. O king, having bathed there, a man will not meet with misfortune. (3-82-30)
गङ्गासङ्गमयोश्चैव स्नाति यः सङ्गमे नरः। दशाश्वमेधानाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-३१॥
gaṅgā-saṅgamayoś caiva snāti yaḥ saṅgame naraḥ। daśāśvamedhān āpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet॥03-82-31॥
[गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; (the river Ganges); सङ्गमयोः (saṅgamayoḥ) - of the confluences; (dual); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; यः (yaḥ) - who; सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; नरः (naraḥ) - man; (person); दश (daśa) - ten; अश्वमेधान् (aśvamedhān) - Aśvamedha sacrifices; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - he lifts up; (he saves;);]
(Gaṅgā of the confluences and indeed bathes who at the confluence man; ten Aśvamedha sacrifices obtains family and indeed he lifts up.)
Whoever, at the confluence of the Gaṅgā, bathes there, that man obtains the merit of ten Aśvamedha sacrifices and indeed uplifts his entire family. (03-82-31)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र सुगन्धां लोकविश्रुताम्। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-३२॥
tato gacchet rājendra sugandhāṁ lokaviśrutām। sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā brahmaloke mahīyate॥03-82-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सुगन्धाम् (sugandhām) - fragrant (place); लोकविश्रुताम् (lokaviśrutām) - famous in the world; सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā) - whose soul is purified from all sins; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahman; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Then he should go, O king, to the fragrant (place) famous in the world; whose soul is purified from all sins, in the world of Brahman is honored.)
Then, O king, he should go to the fragrant place renowned throughout the world; he whose soul is purified from all sins is honored in the realm of Brahman. (03-82-32)
रुद्रावर्तं ततो गच्छेत्तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-३३॥
rudrāvartaṃ tato gacchet tīrthasevī narādhipa। tatra snātvā naro rājan svargaloke mahīyate॥03-82-33॥
[रुद्रावर्तं (rudrāvartaṃ) - Rudrāvarta (a sacred place); ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - one devoted to holy places; one who frequents sacred fords; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; O king; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; person; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the world of heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored; is exalted;]
(To Rudrāvarta then should go, one devoted to holy places, O lord of men. There, having bathed, a man, O king, in the world of heaven is exalted.)
O king, one devoted to holy places should then go to Rudrāvarta. There, after bathing, a person, O king, is honored in heaven. (03-82-33)
गङ्गायाश्च नरश्रेष्ठ सरस्वत्याश्च सङ्गमे। स्नातोऽश्वमेधमाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-३४॥
gaṅgāyāś ca naraśreṣṭha sarasvatyāś ca saṅgame। snāto'śvamedham āpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-34॥
[गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; च (ca) - and; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvatī; च (ca) - and; सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकं (svargalokaṃ) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(O best of men, having bathed at the confluence of Gaṅgā and Sarasvatī, obtains the Aśvamedha (sacrifice), and goes to the heavenly world.)
O best of men, one who bathes at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Sarasvatī attains the result of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and goes to heaven. (03-82-34)
भद्रकर्णेश्वरं गत्वा देवमर्च्य यथाविधि। न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-३५॥
bhadrakarṇeśvaraṃ gatvā devam arcya yathāvidhi। na durgatim avāpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-82-35॥
[भद्रकर्णेश्वरम् (bhadrakarṇeśvaram) - to Bhadrakarṇeśvara (auspicious-eared Lord); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; देवम् (devam) - the god; अर्च्य (arcya) - having worshipped; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to prescribed method; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - bad fate; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Having gone to Bhadrakarṇeśvara, having worshipped the god according to the prescribed method, does not obtain bad fate, and goes to the heavenly world.)
Whoever goes to Bhadrakarṇeśvara and worships the god as prescribed does not meet with misfortune and attains the world of heaven. (03-82-35)
ततः कुब्जाम्रकं गच्छेत्तीर्थसेवी यथाक्रमम्। गोसहस्रमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-३६॥
tataḥ kubjāmrakaṃ gacchet tīrthasevī yathākramam। gosahasram avāpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; कुब्जाम्रकम् (kubjāmrakam) - Kubjāmraka (name of a sacred place); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - visitor of holy places; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due order; गो (go) - cow; सहस्रम् (sahasram) - thousand; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Thereafter, Kubjāmraka should go, visitor of holy places, in due order. The thousand cows obtains, and the heavenly world goes.)
Thereafter, the visitor of holy places should proceed to Kubjāmraka in due order; he obtains the merit of gifting a thousand cows and goes to the heavenly world. (03-82-36)
अरुन्धतीवटं गच्छेत्तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। सामुद्रकमुपस्पृश्य त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः ॥ गोसहस्रफलं विन्देत्कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-३७॥
aruṃdhatī-vaṭaṃ gacchet-tīrtha-sevī narādhipa। sāmudrakam-upaspṛśya trirātra-upoṣito naraḥ ॥ go-sahasra-phalaṃ vindet-kulaṃ ca eva samuddharet ॥03-82-37॥
[अरुन्धतीवटं (aruṃdhatī-vaṭam) - Arundhati fig tree; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; तीर्थसेवी (tīrtha-sevī) - holy place server; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; सामुद्रकम् (sāmudrakam) - sea water; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātra-upoṣitaḥ) - fasted for three nights; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; गोसहस्रफलं (go-sahasra-phalam) - fruit of a thousand cows; विन्देत् (vindet) - obtains; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - should uplift;]
(Arundhati fig tree should go holy place server O king. Sea water having touched fasted for three nights a man. Fruit of a thousand cows obtains, family and indeed should uplift.)
O king, one who serves at holy places should go to the Arundhati fig tree. After touching sea water and having fasted for three nights, a man obtains the merit equal to gifting a thousand cows and indeed uplifts his family. (03-82-37)
ब्रह्मावर्तं ततो गच्छेद्ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-३८॥
brahmāvartaṁ tato gacched brahmacārī samāhitaḥ. aśvamedham avāpnoti svargalokaṁ ca gacchati ॥03-82-38॥
[ब्रह्मावर्तं (brahmāvartaṁ) - Brahmavarta region; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - the celibate student; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; composed; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the Ashvamedha (horse-sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकं (svargalokaṁ) - the heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - he goes;]
(Brahmavarta region from there should go, the celibate student, concentrated. The Ashvamedha he obtains, the heavenly world and he goes.)
Thereafter, the celibate student who is composed should proceed to Brahmavarta; he obtains the benefits of the Ashvamedha and attains the heavenly world. (03-82-38)
यमुनाप्रभवं गत्वा उपस्पृश्य च यामुने। अश्वमेधफलं लब्ध्वा स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-३९॥
yamunā-prabhavaṃ gatvā upaspṛśya ca yāmune| aśvamedha-phalaṃ labdhvā svarga-loke mahīyate॥03-82-39॥
[यमुनाप्रभवं (yamunāprabhavam) - origin-of-Yamunā (Yamunā’s source); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (with water); च (ca) - and; यामुने (yāmune) - in the Yamunā; अश्वमेधफलं (aśvamedha-phalam) - fruit-of-aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the world-of-heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having gone to the origin of Yamunā, and having touched (with water) in the Yamunā, having obtained the fruit of aśvamedha, one is honored in the world of heaven.)
By going to the origin of the Yamunā and touching its waters, one attains the fruit of an aśvamedha (horse sacrifice) and is honored in the world of the gods. (03-82-39)
दर्वीसङ्क्रमणं प्राप्य तीर्थं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-४०॥
darvīsaṅkramaṇaṃ prāpya tīrthaṃ trailokyaviśrutam। aśvamedhamavāpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-82-40॥
[दर्वीसङ्क्रमणम् (darvī-saṅkramaṇam) - the crossing of ladle; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokya-viśrutam) - famous in the three worlds; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the horse sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svarga-lokam) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Having attained the darvī-saṅkramaṇa sacred place, famous in the three worlds, one obtains the horse sacrifice and goes to the heavenly world.)
Upon reaching the Darvīsaṅkramaṇa tīrtha, renowned through the three worlds, one gains the merit of an aśvamedha sacrifice and goes to heaven. (03-82-40)
सिन्धोश्च प्रभवं गत्वा सिद्धगन्धर्वसेवितम्। तत्रोष्य रजनीः पञ्च विन्द्याद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८२-४१॥
sindhoś ca prabhavaṃ gatvā siddhagandharvasevitam. tatroṣya rajanīḥ pañca vindyād bahu suvarṇakam ॥03-82-41॥
[सिन्धोः (sindhoḥ) - of the Sindhu (river); च (ca) - and; प्रभवम् (prabhavam) - source; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सिद्धगन्धर्वसेवितम् (siddhagandharvasevitam) - attended by Siddhas and Gandharvas; तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; रजनीः (rajanīḥ) - nights; पञ्च (pañca) - five; विन्द्यात् (vindyāt) - should obtain; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold;]
(Of the Sindhu and (at its) source, having gone (to the place) attended by Siddhas and Gandharvas, there, having remained five nights, one should obtain much gold.)
After going to the source of the Sindhu, which is frequented by Siddhas and Gandharvas, and staying there for five nights, one obtains a great deal of gold. (03-82-41)
अथ वेदीं समासाद्य नरः परमदुर्गमाम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति गच्छेच्चौशनसीं गतिम् ॥०३-८२-४२॥
atha vedīṁ samāsādya naraḥ paramadurgamām। aśvamedham avāpnoti gaccheccauśanasīṁ gatim ॥03-82-42॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वेदीं (vedīṁ) - altar; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नरः (naraḥ) - man; परमदुर्गमाम् (paramadurgamām) - extremely difficult to access; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; च (ca) - and; औशनसीं (auśanasīṁ) - of Uśanas (Śukra), i.e., belonging to Uśanas; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Then, having approached the altar extremely difficult to access, the man attains the Aśvamedha and would go to the state belonging to Uśanas.)
Then, when a man approaches the altar that is extremely difficult to access, he attains the result of an Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice) and reaches the state associated with Uśanas (Śukra). (03-82-42)
ऋषिकुल्यां समासाद्य वासिष्ठं चैव भारत। वासिष्ठं समतिक्रम्य सर्वे वर्णा द्विजातयः ॥०३-८२-४३॥
ṛṣikulyāṃ samāsādya vāsiṣṭhaṃ caiva bhārata। vāsiṣṭhaṃ samatikramya sarve varṇā dvijātayaḥ ॥03-82-43॥
[ऋषिकुल्यां (ṛṣikulyāṃ) - on the river Ṛṣikulyā; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; वासिष्ठं (vāsiṣṭham) - [the place] of Vasiṣṭha; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; वासिष्ठं (vāsiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha [hermitage]; समतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having passed beyond; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वर्णा (varṇāḥ) - classes; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - twice-borns;]
(On the river Ṛṣikulyā, having approached and indeed [the hermitage] of Vasiṣṭha, O Bhārata, having passed beyond Vasiṣṭha, all the classes, the twice-borns.)
O Bhārata, having approached the river Ṛṣikulyā and the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha, and having passed beyond Vasiṣṭha, all the twice-born members of all classes (continued on their way). (03-82-43)
ऋषिकुल्यां नरः स्नात्वा ऋषिलोकं प्रपद्यते। यदि तत्र वसेन्मासं शाकाहारो नराधिप ॥०३-८२-४४॥
ṛṣikul-yāṁ naraḥ snātvā ṛṣilokaṁ prapadyate. yadi tatra vasen māsaṁ śākāhāro narādhipa ॥03-82-44॥
[ऋषिकुल्यां (ṛṣikul-yāṁ) - in the (river/goddess) Ṛṣikulya; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; ऋषिलोकं (ṛṣilokam) - the world of the sages; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - attains; यदि (yadi) - if; तत्र (tatra) - there; वसेत् (vaset) - should dwell; मासम् (māsam) - a month; शाकाहारः (śākāhāraḥ) - one subsisting on vegetables; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(In Ṛṣikulya a man, having bathed, attains the world of the sages. If there one should dwell a month living on vegetables, O ruler of men.)
O ruler of men, if a man, having bathed in the Ṛṣikulya, were to dwell there for a month subsisting on vegetables, he attains the world of the sages. (03-82-44)
भृगुतुङ्गं समासाद्य वाजिमेधफलं लभेत्। गत्वा वीरप्रमोक्षं च सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८२-४५॥
bhṛgutungaṃ samāsādya vājimedhapalaṃ labheta। gatvā vīrapramokṣaṃ ca sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-82-45॥
[भृगुतुङ्गं (bhṛgutungam) - Bṛgutunga; (a sacred mountain or place); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; वाजिमेधफलं (vājimedhapalam) - fruit of the horse-sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - one obtains; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; वीरप्रमोक्षं (vīrapramokṣam) - release of heroes; (a special liberation, or a place associated with heroes' release); च (ca) - and; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(Having approached Bṛgutunga, one obtains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice. Having gone to the release of heroes also, one is released from all sins.)
On reaching Bṛgutunga, one attains the merit of a horse-sacrifice; and by going to Vīrapramokṣa too, one is freed from all sins. (03-82-45)
कृत्तिकामघयोश्चैव तीर्थमासाद्य भारत। अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां फलं प्राप्नोति पुण्यकृत् ॥०३-८२-४६॥
kṛttikāmaghayoś caiva tīrtham āsādya bhārata। agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṃ phalaṃ prāpnoti puṇyakṛt॥03-82-46॥
[कृत्तिकामघयोः (kṛttikāmaghayoḥ) - of Kṛttikā and Maghā (nakṣatras, lunar mansions); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्याम् (agniṣṭomātirātrābhyām) - than Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices; फलं (phalaṃ) - the fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; पुण्यकृत् (puṇyakṛt) - the doer of merit;]
(Of Kṛttikā and Maghā and indeed, having reached the sacred place, O Bhārata, the doer of merit obtains the fruit greater than Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices.)
O Bhārata, the meritorious person, upon reaching the sacred place of Kṛttikā and Maghā, obtains a reward equal to that of the Agniṣṭoma and Atirātra sacrifices. (03-82-46)
ततः सन्ध्यां समासाद्य विद्यातीर्थमनुत्तमम्। उपस्पृश्य च विद्यानां सर्वासां पारगो भवेत् ॥०३-८२-४७॥
tataḥ sandhyāṃ samāsādya vidyātīrtham anuttamam। upaspṛśya ca vidyānāṃ sarvāsāṃ pārago bhavet॥03-82-47॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सन्ध्यां (sandhyām) - twilight (the junction of day and night); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; विद्यातीर्थम् (vidyātīrtham) - sacred place of learning; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (sprinkled water upon oneself in purification); च (ca) - and; विद्यानां (vidyānām) - of knowledges; सर्वासां (sarvāsām) - of all; पारगः (pāragaḥ) - one who has crossed over, master; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become;]
(Then, having approached the twilight, the unsurpassed sacred place of learning, and having purified oneself, and of all knowledges, may one become the master.)
Then, approaching the time of twilight and the unsurpassed sacred place of learning, and having purified oneself, one may become a master of all branches of knowledge. (03-82-47)
महाश्रमे वसेद्रात्रिं सर्वपापप्रमोचने। एककालं निराहारो लोकानावसते शुभान् ॥०३-८२-४८॥
mahāśrame vased rātriṁ sarvapāpapramocane। ekakālaṁ nirāhāro lokānāvasate śubhān ॥03-82-48॥
[महाश्रमे (mahāśrame) - in the great hermitage; वसेद् (vased) - one should dwell; रात्रिं (rātriṁ) - one night; सर्वपापप्रमोचने (sarvapāpapramocane) - remover of all sins; एककालं (ekakālaṁ) - for one time; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; लोकान् (lokān) - the worlds; आवसते (āvasate) - dwells; शुभान् (śubhān) - auspicious;]
(In the great hermitage, one should dwell one night, remover of all sins. Once, without food, he dwells in auspicious worlds.)
By dwelling for one night in the great hermitage — the remover of all sins — and fasting for one period, one attains to the auspicious worlds. (03-82-48)
षष्ठकालोपवासेन मासमुष्य महालये। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा विन्द्याद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८२-४९॥
ṣaṣṭhakālopavāsena māsamuṣya mahālaye। sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā vindyādbahu suvarṇakam ॥03-82-49॥
[षष्ठकालोपवासेन (ṣaṣṭhakālopavāsena) - through fasting at the sixth division of the day; मासमुष्य (māsamuṣya) - having passed a month; महालये (mahālaye) - in the Mahālayā (Shrāddha period); सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā) - soul purified from all sins; विन्द्यात् (vindyāt) - would obtain; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold;]
(Through fasting at the sixth division of the day, having passed a month, in the Mahālaya, soul purified from all sins would obtain much gold.)
By fasting at the sixth period of the day for a month during Mahālaya, one whose soul has been purified of all sins would obtain much gold. (03-82-49)
अथ वेतसिकां गत्वा पितामहनिषेविताम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति गच्छेच्चौशनसीं गतिम् ॥०३-८२-५०॥
atha vetasikāṁ gatvā pitāmahaniṣevitām। aśvamedhamavāpnoti gacchec cauśanasīṁ gatim॥03-82-50॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वेतसिकां (vetasikām) - Vetasikā (a sacred place); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; पितामहनिषेविताम् (pitāmahaniṣevitām) - revered by the grandsire (Brahmā); अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the fruit of the aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one would go; च (ca) - and; औशनसीं (auśanasīm) - of Uśanas (Śukra); गतिम् (gatim) - path;]
(Then Vetasikā having gone, revered by the grandsire, the fruit of the aśvamedha attains; one would go and the path of Uśanas.)
Then, having gone to Vetasikā, revered by the grandsire, one attains the fruit of the aśvamedha sacrifice and attains the path of Uśanas. (03-82-50)
अथ सुन्दरिकातीर्थं प्राप्य सिद्धनिषेवितम्। रूपस्य भागी भवति दृष्टमेतत्पुरातने ॥०३-८२-५१॥
atha sundarikātīrthaṃ prāpya siddhaniṣevitam। rūpasya bhāgī bhavati dṛṣṭam etat purātane ॥03-82-51॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सुन्दरिकातीर्थम् (sundarikātīrtham) - Sundarikā-tīrtha; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; सिद्धनिषेवितम् (siddhaniṣevitam) - frequented by siddhas; रूपस्य (rūpasya) - of beauty; भागी (bhāgī) - a participant; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरातने (purātane) - in ancient (times);]
(Then, having reached Sundarikā-tīrtha frequented by siddhas, of beauty, a participant becomes, seen this in ancient (times).)
Then, upon reaching Sundarikā-tīrtha frequented by siddhas, one becomes a participant in beauty; this has been seen in ancient times. (03-82-51)
ततो वै ब्राह्मणीं गत्वा ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। पद्मवर्णेन यानेन ब्रह्मलोकं प्रपद्यते ॥०३-८२-५२॥
tato vai brāhmaṇīṃ gatvā brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। padmavarṇena yānena brahmalokaṃ prapadyate॥03-82-52॥
[ततो (tataḥ) - then; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्राह्मणीं (brāhmaṇīm) - to (the wife of) Brahman; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - the celibate student; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; पद्मवर्णेन (padmavarṇena) - with (a vehicle) of lotus-color; यानेन (yānena) - by the vehicle; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokam) - to the world of Brahman; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - he attains;]
(Then indeed, the celibate who has conquered his senses, having gone to the (wife of) Brahman, by a lotus-colored vehicle, attains the world of Brahman.)
Then indeed, the celibate who has mastered his senses, after approaching the consort of Brahman, ascends to the world of Brahman in a lotus-colored vehicle. (03-82-52)
ततश्च नैमिषं 가च्छेत्पुण्यं सिद्धनिषेवितम्। तत्र नित्यं निवसति ब्रह्मा देवगणैर्वृतः ॥०३-८२-५३॥
tataś ca naimiṣaṃ gacchet puṇyaṃ siddhaniṣevitam। tatra nityaṃ nivasati brahmā devagaṇair vṛtaḥ ॥03-82-53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; च (ca) - and; नैमिषम् (naimiṣam) - Naimisha (the sacred place); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - holy; सिद्धनिषेवितम् (siddhaniṣevitam) - frequented by perfected beings; तत्र (tatra) - there; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - eternally; निवसति (nivasati) - abides; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - with groups of gods; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(Thereafter and Naimisha should go, holy, frequented by perfected beings. There eternally abides Brahmā, surrounded by groups of gods.)
Thereafter, one should go to Naimisha, the holy place frequented by perfected beings. There, Brahmā always resides, surrounded by hosts of gods. (03-82-53)
नैमिषं प्रार्थयानस्य पापस्यार्धं प्रणश्यति। प्रविष्टमात्रस्तु नरः सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८२-५४॥
naimiṣaṃ prārthayanasya pāpasyārdhaṃ praṇaśyati। praviṣṭamātrastu naraḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-82-54॥
[नैमिषं (naimiṣam) - Naimisha-forest; प्रार्थयानस्य (prārthayanasya) - of one longing for; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of sin; अर्धं (ardhaṃ) - half; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - is destroyed; प्रविष्टमात्रः (praviṣṭamātraḥ) - just upon entering; तु (tu) - but; नरः (naraḥ) - the person; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(Of one longing for Naimisha-forest, half of his sin is destroyed. But the person just upon entering is released from all sins.)
Merely desiring to go to the Naimisha forest destroys half of a person's sins; but just by entering, a man is freed from all sins. (03-82-54)
तत्र मासं वसेद्धीरो नैमिषे तीर्थतत्परः। पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि नैमिषे तानि भारत ॥०३-८२-५५॥
tatra māsaṃ vased dhīro naimiṣe tīrthatatparaḥ। pṛthivyāṃ yāni tīrthāni naimiṣe tāni bhārata॥03-82-55॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मासम् (māsam) - a month; वसेत् (vaset) - should stay; धीः्र (dhīraḥ) - the wise; नैमिषे (naimiṣe) - in Naimisha; तीर्थतत्परः (tīrthatatparaḥ) - intent on pilgrimage; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; यानि (yāni) - whatever; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; नैमिषे (naimiṣe) - in Naimisha; तानि (tāni) - those; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(There a wise man should stay a month intent on pilgrimage in Naimisha. On earth, whatever sacred places (exist), those are in Naimisha, O Bhārata.)
There, O Bhārata, a wise person intent on pilgrimage should stay for a month in Naimisha, for all the sacred places on earth are found in Naimisha. (03-82-55)
अभिषेककृतस्तत्र नियतो नियताशनः। गवामयस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति भारत ॥ पुनात्यासप्तमं चैव कुलं भरतसत्तम ॥०३-८२-५६॥
abhiṣekakṛtastatra niyato niyatāśanaḥ। gavāmayasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti bhārata॥ punātyāsaptamaṃ caiva kulaṃ bharatasattama॥03-82-56॥
[अभिषेककृतः (abhiṣekakṛtaḥ) - one who has performed the consecration; तत्र (tatra) - there; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-restrained; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - one of regulated diet; गवामयस्य (gavāmayasya) - of the cow-made (cowdung/cow-based) [sacrificial]; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata); पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; आसप्तमम् (āsaptamam) - up to the seventh; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कुलम् (kulam) - family; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(He who has performed the consecration there, self-restrained, of regulated diet, obtains the fruit of the cow-based sacrifice, O Bhārata. He indeed purifies the family up to the seventh, O best of the Bharatas. (03-82-56))
He who is self-restrained, of regulated diet, and has performed consecration there, O Bhārata, attains the result of the cow-based sacrifice. Indeed, O best of the Bharatas, he purifies his family up to the seventh generation. (03-82-56)
यस्त्यजेन्नैमिषे प्राणानुपवासपरायणः। स मोदेत्स्वर्गलोकस्थ एवमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥ नित्यं पुण्यं च मेध्यं च नैमिषं नृपसत्तम ॥०३-८२-५७॥
yastyajennaimiṣe prāṇānupavāsaparāyaṇaḥ। sa modetsvargalokastha evamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ॥ nityaṃ puṇyaṃ ca medhyaṃ ca naimiṣaṃ nṛpasattama॥03-82-57॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - abandons; नैमिषे (naimiṣe) - in Naimisha; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - the life-breaths; उपवासपरायणः (upavāsaparāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to fasting; सः (saḥ) - he; मोदेत् (modet) - should rejoice; स्वर्गलोकस्थः (svargalokasthaḥ) - situated in the world of heaven; एवम् (evam) - thus; आहुḥ (āhuḥ) - say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - sacred; च (ca) - and; मेध्यं (medhyaṃ) - purifying; च (ca) - and; नैमिषं (naimiṣaṃ) - Naimisha; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(Who abandons life-breaths in Naimisha, devoted to fasting, he should rejoice, situated in the world of heaven; thus say the wise. Always sacred and purifying is Naimisha, O best of kings.)
The wise say that one who gives up his life in Naimisha while devoted to fasting rejoices in heaven. Naimisha is always sacred and purifying, O best of kings. (03-82-57)
गङ्गोद्भेदं समासाद्य त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति ब्रह्मभूतश्च जायते ॥०३-८२-५८॥
gaṅgod-bhedaṃ samāsādya trirātroupoṣito naraḥ। vājapeyam avāpnoti brahmabhūtaś ca jāyate॥03-82-58॥
[गङ्गोद्भेदं (gaṅgodbhedam) - the place where the Gaṅgā emerges; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; त्रिरात्र (trirātra) - three nights; उपोषितः (upoṣitaḥ) - having fasted; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - the Vājapeya sacrifice (its merit); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; ब्रह्मभूतः (brahmabhūtaḥ) - having become Brahman; च (ca) - and; जायते (jāyate) - is (he) born;]
(Having approached Gaṅgā’s source, having fasted for three nights, a man obtains the Vājapeya sacrifice, and having become Brahman, is born.)
If a man, having reached the source of the Gaṅgā and fasted for three nights, he attains the merit of the Vājapeya sacrifice and is born as one merged with Brahman. (03-82-58)
सरस्वतीं समासाद्य तर्पयेत्पितृदेवताः। सारस्वतेषु लोकेषु मोदते नात्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-५९॥
sarasvatīṃ samāsādya tarpayet pitṛdevatāḥ। sāravatyeṣu lokeṣu modate nātra saṃśayaḥ॥03-82-59॥
[सरस्वतीं (sarasvatīṃ) - Sarasvatī (the river Sarasvatī, accusative); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; having reached; तर्पयेत् (tarpayet) - let him satisfy; let him offer oblations; पितृदेवताः (pitṛdevatāḥ) - the ancestral deities; manes; सारस्वतेषु (sāravatyeṣu) - in the Sarasvatī (related) (plural, locative); लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; मोदते (modate) - rejoices; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - (is) doubt;]
(Having attained Sarasvatī, let him satisfy the ancestral deities. In the worlds of Sarasvatī he rejoices; here there is no doubt (of it).)
Having reached the Sarasvatī (river), one should satisfy the ancestral deities; in the regions related to Sarasvatī, he rejoices—there is no doubt about this. (03-82-59)
ततश्च बाहुदां गच्छेद्ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। देवसत्रस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८२-६०॥
tataś ca bāhudāṁ gacched brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। devasatrasya yajñasya phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-82-60॥

(Then and Bāhudām should go brahmacārī concentrated; of the devasatra of the sacrifice fruit gains man.)
Then, the brahmacārī (celibate student), being concentrated, should go to Bāhudām; a man obtains the fruit of the devasatra sacrifice. (03-82-60)
ततश्चीरवतीं गच्छेत्पुण्यां पुण्यतमैर्वृताम्। पितृदेवार्चनरतो वाजपेयमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-६१॥
tataś cīravatīṃ gacchet puṇyāṃ puṇyatamair vṛtām। pitṛ-devārcana-rato vājapeyam avāpnuyāt॥03-82-61॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; चीरवतीम् (cīravatīm) - to Cīravatī (river); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; पुण्यां (puṇyāṃ) - holy; पुण्यतमैः (puṇyatamaiḥ) - by the most virtuous; वृताम् (vṛtām) - surrounded; पितृदेव (pitṛ-deva) - ancestral deities; अर्चनरतः (arcanarataḥ) - engaged in worship; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya (sacrifice); अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may obtain;]
(From there, one should go to Cīravatī, the holy (river), surrounded by the most virtuous; engaged in worship of ancestral deities, may attain the Vājapeya (sacrifice).)
From there, one should proceed to the holy Cīravatī, which is surrounded by the most virtuous. Engaged in worship of ancestral deities, one may attain the merit of the Vājapeya sacrifice. (03-82-61)
विमलाशोकमासाद्य विराजति यथा शशी। तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-६२॥
vimalāśokam-āsādya virājati yathā śaśī। tatra uṣya rajanīm ekām svargaloke mahīyate ॥03-82-62॥
[विमलाशोकम् (vimalāśokam) - pure aśoka tree; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; विराजति (virājati) - shines; यथा (yathā) - as; शशी (śaśī) - the moon; तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having dwelt; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the world of the gods; महीयते (mahīyate) - becomes honored;]
(Having obtained the pure aśoka tree, shines as the moon; there, having dwelt one night, in the world of the gods becomes honored.)
Having reached the pure aśoka tree, she shines like the moon; there, after spending a single night, she becomes honored in the world of the gods. (03-82-62)
गोप्रतारं ततो गच्छेत्सरय्वास्तीर्थमुत्तमम्। यत्र रामो गतः स्वर्गं सभृत्यबलवाहनः ॥०३-८२-६३॥
gopratāraṁ tato gacchet sarayvās tīrtham uttamam। yatra rāmo gataḥ svargaṁ sabhṛtya-balavāhanaḥ॥03-82-63॥
[गोप्रतारम् (gopratāram) - the ford named Gopratara; ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; सरय्वाः (sarayvāḥ) - of Sarayū; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; यत्र (yatra) - where; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; गतः (gataḥ) - went; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; सभृत्य (sabhṛtya) - with attendants; बलवाहनः (balavāhanaḥ) - with army and vehicles;]
(One should go then to the ford named Gopratara, the excellent sacred place of Sarayū, where Rama went to heaven with his attendants, army, and vehicles.)
Then one should proceed to the sacred ford named Gopratara on the Sarayū river, where Rama ascended to heaven along with his attendants, army, and vehicles. (03-82-63)
देहं त्यक्त्वा दिवं यातस्तस्य तीर्थस्य तेजसा। रामस्य च प्रसादेन व्यवसायाच्च भारत ॥०३-८२-६४॥
dehaṃ tyaktvā divaṃ yātas tasya tīrthasya tejasā। rāmasya ca prasādena vyavasāyāc ca bhārata॥03-82-64॥
[देहं (dehaṃ) - body; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; यातः (yātaḥ) - gone; तस्य (tasya) - of that; तीर्थस्य (tīrthasya) - of the sacred place; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; च (ca) - and; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by the grace; व्यवसायात् (vyavasāyāt) - by endeavor; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having abandoned the body, gone to heaven by the brilliance of that sacred place, and by the grace of Rāma and by endeavor, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, by the brilliance of that sacred place, by the grace of Rāma, and through endeavor, one who has abandoned the body has gone to heaven. (03-82-64)
तस्मिंस्तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा गोप्रतारे नराधिप। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा स्वर्गलोके महीयते ॥०३-८२-६५॥
tasmiṁs tīrthe naraḥ snātvā gopratāre narādhipa। sarvapāpa-viśuddhātmā svargaloke mahīyate ॥03-82-65॥

(In that sacred place, a man having bathed at Gopratāra, O king, with all his sins purified, is honored in the heavenly world.)
O king, a person who bathes at Gopratāra in that sacred place, his soul purified of all sin, is honored in heaven. (03-82-65)
रामतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा गोमत्यां कुरुनन्दन। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति पुनाति च कुलं नरः ॥०३-८२-६६॥
rāmatīrthe naraḥ snātvā gomatyāṃ kurunandana। aśvamedhamavāpnoti punāti ca kulaṃ naraḥ॥03-82-66॥
[रामतीर्थे (rāmatīrthe) - at Rāma tīrtha; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोमत्यां (gomatyāṃ) - in the Gomatī (river); कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the Aśvamedha sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; च (ca) - and; कुलं (kulaṃ) - the family; नरः (naraḥ) - the man;]
(At Rāma tīrtha a man having bathed in the Gomatī, O joy of the Kurus, the Aśvamedha sacrifice attains, purifies and the family the man.)
O Kurunandana, a man who bathes at Rāmatīrtha in the Gomatī river attains the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and purifies his family. (03-82-66)
शतसाहस्रिकं तत्र तीर्थं भरतसत्तम। तत्रोपस्पर्शनं कृत्वा नियतो नियताशनः ॥ गोसहस्रफलं पुण्यं प्राप्नोति भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८२-६७॥
śatasāhasrikaṃ tatra tīrthaṃ bharatasattama। tatropasparśanaṃ kṛtvā niyato niyatāśanaḥ॥ gosahasraphalaṃ puṇyaṃ prāpnoti bharatarṣabha॥03-82-67॥
[शतसाहस्रिकं (śatasāhasrikam) - of one hundred thousand; तत्र (tatra) - there; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best of the Bharatas; तत्र (tatra) - there; उपस्पर्शनं (upasparśanam) - touching (the water); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-restrained; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - one with regulated food; गो (go) - cow; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; फलं (phalam) - fruit; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - merit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Of one hundred thousand, there, sacred place, O best of Bharatas. There, having touched (the water), self-restrained, one with regulated food, the fruit of a thousand cows, merit, obtains, O bull among the Bharatas. (03-82-67))
O best of the Bharatas, there is a sacred place of one hundred thousand (years/extent). There, by performing the ritual ablution with self-restraint and regulated diet, one obtains the merit equal to gifting a thousand cows, O foremost of the Bharatas. (03-82-67)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र भर्तृस्थानमनुत्तमम्। कोटितीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा अर्चयित्वा गुहं नृप ॥ गोसहस्रफलं विन्देत्तेजस्वी च भवेन्नरः ॥०३-८२-६८॥
tato gacchet rājendra bhartṛsthānam anuttamam। koṭitīrthe naraḥ snātvā arcayitvā guhaṃ nṛpa॥ gosahasraphalaṃ vindet tejasvī ca bhaven naraḥ॥03-82-68॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; भर्तृस्थानम् (bhartṛsthānam) - place of the Lord; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - supreme; कोटितीर्थे (koṭitīrthe) - at Koṭitīrtha (the name of the holy place); नरः (naraḥ) - a man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; गुहं (guhaṃ) - Guha (Kārtikeya, a deity); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṃ) - the fruit of a thousand cows; विन्देत् (vindet) - would obtain; तेजस्वी च (tejasvī ca) - and become radiant; भवेत् (bhavet) - would become; नरः (naraḥ) - the man;]
(Thereafter should go O king of kings to place of the Lord, supreme. At Koṭitīrtha a man, having bathed, having worshipped Guha, O king, the fruit of a thousand cows would obtain, and become radiant would become the man.)
Thereafter, O King, one should proceed to the supreme place of the Lord. If a person bathes at Koṭitīrtha and worships Guha (Kārtikeya), O King, that man attains the merit of donating a thousand cows and becomes radiant. (03-82-68)
ततो वाराणसीं गत्वा अर्चयित्वा वृषध्वजम्। कपिलाह्रदे नरः स्नात्वा राजसूयफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-६९॥
tato vārāṇasīṃ gatvā arcayitvā vṛṣadhvajam। kapilāhrade naraḥ snātvā rājasūyaphalaṃ labhet॥03-82-69॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वाराणसीम् (vārāṇasīm) - Vārāṇasī; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; वृषध्वजम् (vṛṣadhvajam) - the Bull-bannered (Shiva); कपिलाह्रदे (kapilāhrade) - at the Kapila-lake; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; राजसूयफलं (rājasūyaphalaṃ) - the fruit of the Rājasūya (sacrifice); लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain;]
(Then, having gone to Vārāṇasī, having worshipped the Bull-bannered one, at the Kapila-lake, a man having bathed may obtain the fruit of the Rājasūya sacrifice.)
Then, going to Vārāṇasī, worshipping Shiva, and bathing at the Kapila-lake, a man may obtain the benefit of the Rājasūya sacrifice. (03-82-69)
मार्कण्डेयस्य राजेन्द्र तीर्थमासाद्य दुर्लभम्। गोमतीगङ्गयोश्चैव सङ्गमे लोकविश्रुते ॥ अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-७०॥
mārkaṇḍeyasya rājendra tīrtham āsādya durlabham। gomatī-gaṅgayoś caiva saṅgame loka-viśrute॥ agniṣṭomam avāpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet॥ 03-82-70॥
[मार्कण्डेयस्य (mārkaṇḍeyasya) - of Mārkaṇḍeya; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - rare; गोमतीगङ्गयोः (gomatī-gaṅgayoḥ) - of Gomati and Ganga; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; लोकविश्रुते (loka-viśrute) - renowned in the world; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - Agniṣṭoma (sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - one obtains; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - one uplifts;]
(O king, having reached the rare holy place of Mārkaṇḍeya, at the confluence of the renowned Gomati and Ganga, one obtains (the merit of) Agniṣṭoma and indeed uplifts the family.)
O king, by reaching the rare pilgrimage place of Mārkaṇḍeya at the famous confluence of the Gomati and Ganga, one attains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and uplifts the whole family. (03-82-70)
ततो गयां समासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति गमनादेव भारत ॥०३-८२-७१॥
tato gayāṁ samāsādya brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti gamanād eva bhārata॥03-82-71॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; गयाम् (gayām) - to Gayā; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - having conquered the senses; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; गमनात् (gamanāt) - by going; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(From there, having reached Gayā, the celibate, having conquered the senses, attains the Aśvamedha (horse sacrifice), indeed by going, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, by merely going to Gayā from there, a celibate who has mastered the senses obtains the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-82-71)
तत्राक्षयवटो नाम त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। पितॄणां तत्र वै दत्तमक्षयं भवति प्रभो ॥०३-८२-७२॥
tatrākṣayavaṭo nāma triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ। pitṝṇāṃ tatra vai dattamakṣayaṃ bhavati prabho ॥03-82-72॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अक्षयवटः (akṣayavaṭaḥ) - Akṣaya-vaṭa (the imperishable banyan tree; proper noun); नाम (nāma) - named; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; दत्तम् (dattam) - offering; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(There Akṣayavaṭa named in the three worlds well-known; for the ancestors there indeed offering imperishable becomes, O lord.)
There, the Akṣayavaṭa tree, known throughout the three worlds, is well renowned. O lord, whatever is offered there for the ancestors indeed becomes imperishable. (03-82-72)
महानद्यामुपस्पृश्य तर्पयेत्पितृदेवताः। अक्षयान्प्राप्नुयाल्लोकान्कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-७३॥
mahānadyām upaspṛśya tarpayet pitṛdevatāḥ। akṣayān prāpnuyāl lokān kulaṃ caiva samuddharet ॥03-82-73॥
[महानद्याम् (mahānadyām) - in the great river; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (having bathed); तर्पयेत् (tarpayet) - should satisfy (should offer oblation to); पितृदेवताः (pitṛdevatāḥ) - the ancestors and the deities; अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - one would attain; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; कुलम् (kulam) - the family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - would uplift.;]
(In the great river, having touched, he should satisfy the ancestors and deities; imperishable worlds he would attain, and the family indeed would uplift.)
By bathing in the great river and offering oblations to the ancestors and deities, one attains imperishable worlds and uplifts the family. (03-82-73)
ततो ब्रह्मसरो गच्छेद्धर्मारण्योपशोभितम्। पौण्डरीकमवाप्नोति प्रभातामेव शर्वरीम् ॥०३-८२-७४॥
tato brahmasaro gacched dharmāraṇyopaśobhitam। pauṇḍarīkam avāpnoti prabhātām eva śarvarīm ॥03-82-74॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ब्रह्मसरो (brahmasaraḥ) - Brahmasara (proper name of lake); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; धर्म (dharma) - dharma; अरण्य (araṇya) - forest; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned by; पौण्डरीकम् (pauṇḍarīkam) - Pauṇḍarīka (name of another lake); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - reaches; प्रभाताम् (prabhātām) - dawn; एव (eva) - just; शर्वरीम् (śarvarīm) - night;]
(Then, to Brahmasara should go, adorned by the forest of dharma; Pauṇḍarīka he reaches, at just the dawn of night.)
Then, one should go to Brahmasara, adorned by the forest of dharma; at dawn itself, he reaches the Pauṇḍarīka lake. (03-82-74)
तस्मिन्सरसि राजेन्द्र ब्रह्मणो यूप उच्छ्रितः। यूपं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा वाजपेयफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-७५॥
tasmin sarasi rājendra brahmaṇo yūpa uccḥritaḥ। yūpaṃ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā vājepeya-phalaṃ labheta ॥03-82-75॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; vicinity; सरसि (sarasi) - lake; pond; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O King; Indra among kings; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; belonging to Brahmā; यूपः (yūpaḥ) - sacrificial post; उच्छ्रितः (uccḥritaḥ) - erected; raised; यूपम् (yūpam) - (the) sacrificial post; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; (to go around from the right); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; performing; वाजपेयफलं (vājepeya-phalaṃ) - fruit (result) of a Vājapeya sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - would obtain; would acquire;]
(In that lake, O King, of Brahmā an erected sacrificial post (is). Having performed circumambulation of the sacrificial post, (one) would obtain the result of (performing) a Vājapeya sacrifice.)
O King, in that lake stands an erected sacrificial post of Brahmā. By circumambulating the sacrificial post, one would obtain the fruit of a Vājapeya sacrifice. (03-82-75)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र धेनुकां लोकविश्रुताम्। एकरात्रोषितो राजन्प्रयच्छेत्तिलधेनुकाम् ॥ सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा सोमलोकं व्रजेद्ध्रुवम् ॥०३-८२-७६॥
tato gacchet rājendra dhenukāṁ lokaviśrutām। ekarātroṣito rājanprayacchettiladhenukām॥ sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā somalokaṁ vrajeddhruvam॥03-82-76॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; धेनुकाम् (dhenukām) - the cow (made of) grain; लोकविश्रुताम् (lokaviśrutām) - renowned in the world; एकरात्रोषितः (ekarātroṣitaḥ) - having stayed one night; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रयच्छेत् (prayacchet) - should give; तिलधेनुकाम् (tiladhenukām) - a cow (made of) sesame; सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा (sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā) - with soul purified from all sin; सोमलोकम् (somalokam) - the world of Soma (the moon); व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(Then should go, O king, to the cow (made of) grain, renowned in the world. Having stayed one night, O king, should give a cow (made of) sesame. With soul purified from all sin, should go certainly to the world of Soma.)
Then, O king, one should go to the renowned cow made of grain. After staying there for one night, O king, one should give a cow made of sesame. With the soul purified from all sin, he certainly goes to the world of Soma (the moon). (03-82-76)
तत्र चिह्नं महाराज अद्यापि हि न संशयः। कपिला सह वत्सेन पर्वते विचरत्युत ॥ सवत्सायाः पदानि स्म दृश्यन्तेऽद्यापि भारत ॥०३-८२-७७॥
tatra cihnaṁ mahārāja adyāpi hi na saṁśayaḥ. kapilā saha vatsena parvate vicaratyuta ॥ savatsāyāḥ padāni sma dṛśyante'dyāpi bhārata ॥03-82-77॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; चिह्नं (cihnaṁ) - mark; sign; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; कपिला (kapilā) - Kapilā (the cow); सह (saha) - with; वत्सेन (vatsena) - with calf; पर्वते (parvate) - on the mountain; विचरति (vicarati) - wanders; उत (uta) - indeed; सवत्सायाः (savatsāyāḥ) - of (the cow) with calf; पदानि (padāni) - footprints; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(There mark O great king even today indeed not doubt. Kapilā with calf on the mountain wanders indeed. Of the cow with calf footprints indeed are seen even today O Bhārata.)
There, O great king, the mark still remains even today without a doubt. Kapilā, together with her calf, indeed wanders on the mountain. The footprints of the cow with her calf are still seen even today, O Bhārata. (03-82-77)
तेषूपस्पृश्य राजेन्द्र पदेषु नृपसत्तम। यत्किञ्चिदशुभं कर्म तत्प्रणश्यति भारत ॥०३-८२-७८॥
teṣūpaspṛśya rājendra padeṣu nṛpasattama। yatkiñcidaśubhaṃ karma tatpraṇaśyati bhārata॥03-82-78॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - in those; (referring to feet); उस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; having worshipped; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O lord of kings; O king; पदेषु (padeṣu) - at the feet; in the feet; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best among kings; यत्किञ्चित् (yatkiñcit) - whatever; anything; अशुभं (aśubham) - inauspicious; evil; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; तत् (tat) - that; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - is destroyed; perishes; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(In those, having touched, O lord of kings, at the feet, O best among kings, whatever inauspicious action, that is destroyed, O Bharata.)
O Bharata, having touched those feet, O lord and best of kings, whatever inauspicious actions there may be, they are destroyed. (03-82-78)
ततो गृध्रवटं गच्छेत्स्थानं देवस्य धीमतः। स्नायीत भस्मना तत्र अभिगम्य वृषध्वजम् ॥०३-८२-७९॥
tato gṛdhravaṭaṃ gacchets thānaṃ devasya dhīmataḥ। snāyīta bhasmanā tatra abhigamya vṛṣadhvajam॥03-82-79॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गृध्रवटम् (gṛdhravaṭam) - the fig tree of vultures; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he should go; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise; स्नायीत् (snāyīta) - he should bathe; भस्मना (bhasmanā) - with ashes; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; वृषध्वजम् (vṛṣadhvajam) - the Bull-bannered (Śiva);]
(Then, to the fig tree of vultures he should go, the place of the wise god; he should bathe with ashes there, having approached the Bull-bannered one.)
Then one should go to the Vulture Fig Tree, the place of the wise god; there, having approached the Bull-bannered Shiva, one should bathe with ashes. (03-82-79)
ब्राह्मणेन भवेच्चीर्णं व्रतं द्वादशवार्षिकम्। इतरेषां तु वर्णानां सर्वपापं प्रणश्यति ॥०३-८२-८०॥
brāhmaṇena bhavec cīrṇaṃ vrataṃ dvādaśavārṣikam। itareṣāṃ tu varṇānāṃ sarvapāpaṃ praṇaśyati॥03-82-80॥
[ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by a Brāhmaṇa; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; च (ca) - and; चीर् (cīrṇaṃ) - performed; व्रतम् (vrataṃ) - vow; द्वादशवार्षिकम् (dvādaśavārṣikam) - lasting twelve years; इतरेषाम् (itareṣām) - of the others; तु (tu) - but; वर्णानाम् (varṇānām) - of the castes; सर्वपापम् (sarvapāpam) - all sin; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - is destroyed;]
(By a Brāhmaṇa should be and performed vow twelve-years. Of the others but of the castes all sin is destroyed.)
A Brāhmaṇa should perform a twelve-year vow, and for the other castes, all their sins are destroyed (by this rite). (03-82-80)
गच्छेत तत उद्यन्तं पर्वतं गीतनादितम्। सावित्रं तु पदं तत्र दृश्यते भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८२-८१॥
gacchet tata udyantaṃ parvataṃ gītanāditam। sāvitraṃ tu padaṃ tatra dṛśyate bharatarṣabha॥03-82-81॥
[गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he/she/it should go; तत् (tata) - that; उद्यन्तम् (udyantam) - rising; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; गीतनादितम् (gītanāditam) - resounding with song; सावित्रम् (sāvitraṃ) - Savitr’s (related to Savitṛ); तु (tu) - but; पदम् (padaṃ) - step; तत्र (tatra) - there; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(He should go to that rising mountain resounding with song. The Savitṛ’s step is seen there, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, one must proceed to that mountain which rises up and resounds with song; there, the step of Savitṛ is to be seen. (03-82-81)
तत्र सन्ध्यामुपासीत ब्राह्मणः संशितव्रतः। उपास्ता च भवेत्सन्ध्या तेन द्वादशवार्षिकी ॥०३-८२-८२॥
tatra sandhyām upāsīta brāhmaṇaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ। upāstā ca bhavet sandhyā tena dvādaśavārṣikī॥03-82-82॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - the twilight (Sandhya); उपासीत (upāsīta) - should worship; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a brāhmaṇa; संशितव्रतः (saṃśitavrataḥ) - firm in his vows; उपास्ता (upāstā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - should become; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - the Sandhya; तेन (tena) - by him; द्वादशवार्षिकी (dvādaśavārṣikī) - twelve years old;]
(There, the brāhmaṇa firm in his vows should worship the Sandhya. And, having worshipped, by him the Sandhya should become (fulfilled) in twelve years.)
There, a brāhmaṇa who is firm in his vows should worship the Sandhya. When he has done so, the Sandhya should become complete by him in twelve years. (03-82-82)
योनिद्वारं च तत्रैव विश्रुतं भरतर्षभ। तत्राभिगम्य मुच्येत पुरुषो योनिसङ्करात् ॥०३-८२-८३॥
yonidvāraṃ ca tatraiva viśrutaṃ bharatarṣabha। tatrābhigamya mucyeta puruṣo yonisaṅkarāt ॥03-82-83॥
[योनिद्वारं (yonidvāram) - womb-door; च (ca) - and; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; विश्रुतं (viśrutam) - well-known; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; मुच्येत (mucyeta) - may be freed; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; योनिसङ्करात् (yonisaṅkarāt) - from confusion of origin;]
(Womb-door and there itself well-known, O bull among the Bharatas; there having approached, may be freed man from confusion of origin.)
O best of the Bharatas, the portal of the womb is well-known to be there; by approaching it, a man may be freed from the confusion of origin. (03-82-83)
कृष्णशुक्लावुभौ पक्षौ गयायां यो वसेन्नरः। पुनात्यासप्तमं राजन्कुलं नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-८४॥
kṛṣṇaśuklāv ubhau pakṣau gayāyāṃ yo vasen naraḥ। punāty ā saptamaṃ rājan kulaṃ nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ॥03-82-84॥
[कृष्णशुक्लौ (kṛṣṇaśuklau) - the dark and bright (fortnights); उभौ (ubhau) - both; पक्षौ (pakṣau) - fortnights; गयायाम् (gayāyām) - at Gayā; यः (yaḥ) - who; वसेत् (vaset) - would stay; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; आ सप्तमम् (ā saptamam) - up to the seventh; राजन् (rājan) - O King; कुलम् (kulam) - family; न अस्ति (na asti) - there is no; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Both dark and bright fortnights at Gayā who would stay man purifies up to the seventh O King family; there is no here doubt.)
O King, a man who stays at Gayā during both the dark and bright fortnights purifies his family up to the seventh generation; there is no doubt about this. (03-82-84)
एष्टव्या बहवः पुत्रा यद्येकोऽपि गयां व्रजेत्। यजेत वाश्वमेधेन नीलं वा वृषमुत्सृजेत् ॥०३-८२-८५॥
eṣṭavyā bahavaḥ putrā yadyeko'pi gayāṃ vrajet। yajeta vāśvamedhena nīlaṃ vā vṛṣam utsṛjet॥03-82-85॥
[एष्टव्या (eṣṭavyā) - should be desired; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पुत्रा (putrāḥ) - sons; यदि (yadi) - if; एकः अपि (ekaḥ api) - even one; गयाम् (gayām) - Gaya; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; यजेत (yajeta) - should perform sacrifice; वा (vā) - or; अश्वमेधेन (aśvamedhena) - with the Aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); नीलम् (nīlam) - dark (blue); वा (vā) - or; वृषम् (vṛṣam) - bull; उत्सृजेत् (utsṛjet) - should set free;]
(Many sons should be desired, if even one should go to Gaya, or should perform a sacrifice with the Aśvamedha, or should set free a blue bull.)
Many sons are to be desired, in case even one goes to Gaya, or performs the Aśvamedha sacrifice, or sets free a blue bull. (03-82-85)
ततः फल्गुं व्रजेद्राजंस्तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति सिद्धिं च महतीं व्रजेत् ॥०३-८२-८६॥
tataḥ phalguṃ vrajed rājaṃs tīrthasevī narādhipa। aśvamedham avāpnoti siddhiṃ ca mahatīṃ vrajet ॥03-82-86॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; फल्गुं (phalguṃ) - Phalgu (river); व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - engaged in the worship of holy places; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - perfection; च (ca) - and; महतीं (mahatīṃ) - great; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should attain;]
(Thereafter, Phalgu should go, O king, engaged in the worship of holy places, O lord of men. The Aśvamedha sacrifice one obtains, perfection and great should attain.)
Thereafter, O king, O lord of men who serves holy places should proceed to the Phalgu (river). He obtains the fruit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice and attains great perfection. (03-82-86)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र धर्मपृष्ठं समाहितः। यत्र धर्मो महाराज नित्यमास्ते युधिष्ठिर ॥ अभिगम्य ततस्तत्र वाजिमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-८७॥
tato gacchet rājendra dharmapṛṣṭhaṃ samāhitaḥ। yatra dharmo mahārāja nityam āste yudhiṣṭhira ॥ abhigamya tatas tatra vājimedhaphalaṃ labheta ॥03-82-87॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; धर्मपृष्ठं (dharmapṛṣṭham) - the support/back of dharma; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - composed; यत्र (yatra) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आस्ते (āste) - abides; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; वाजिमेधफलं (vājimedhaphalam) - fruit of a horse sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - he obtains;]
(Thereafter should go, O king of kings, to the support of dharma, composed. Where dharma, O great king, always abides, O Yudhishthira; having approached then there, the fruit of a horse sacrifice he obtains.)
After that, O king of kings, proceed with a composed mind to the seat of righteousness, where dharma always dwells, O Yudhishthira. Having reached there, one obtains the fruit of the horse sacrifice. (03-82-87)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र ब्रह्मणस्तीर्थमुत्तमम्। तत्रार्चयित्वा राजेन्द्र ब्रह्माणममितौजसम् ॥ राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८२-८८॥
tato gacchet rājendra brahmaṇas tīrtham uttamam। tatrārcayitvā rājendra brahmāṇam amitaujasam॥ rājasūyāśvamedhābhyāṁ phalaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-82-88॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; तत्र (tatra) - there; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasam) - of infinite energy; राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्याम् (rājasūyāśvamedhābhyām) - by Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (sacrifices); फलम् (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(Then should go, O king, to Brahmā's supreme holy place. There, having worshipped, O king, Brahmā of infinite energy, by (doing this) a man obtains the fruit of Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (sacrifices). (03-82-88))
Then, O king, one should go to Brahmā's supreme holy place. There, after worshipping Brahmā of infinite energy, a person attains the merit of both the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. (03-82-88)
ततो राजगृहं गच्छेत्तीर्थसेवी नराधिप। उपस्पृश्य तपोदेषु काक्षीवानिव मोदते ॥०३-८२-८९॥
tato rājagṛhaṃ gacchet tīrthasevī narādhipa। upaspṛśya tapodeṣu kākṣīvān iva modate॥03-82-89॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजगृहं (rājagṛham) - the royal palace; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he should go; तीर्थसेवी (tīrthasevī) - a seeker after sacred places; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having bathed (performed ceremonial bath); तपोदेषु (tapodeṣu) - in holy places of penance; काक्षीवान् (kākṣīvān) - sage Kakṣīvān; इव (iva) - like; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(Then the king, seeker after sacred places, should go to the royal palace; having bathed in the holy places of penance, he rejoices like (the sage) Kakṣīvān.)
Then the king devoted to sacred places should go to the royal palace; having bathed at the sites of penance, he rejoices like Kakṣīvān. (03-82-89)
यक्षिण्या नैत्यकं तत्र प्राश्नीत पुरुषः शुचिः। यक्षिण्यास्तु प्रसादेन मुच्यते भ्रूणहत्यया ॥०३-८२-९०॥
yakṣiṇyā naityakaṃ tatra prāśnīta puruṣaḥ śuciḥ। yakṣiṇyāstu prasādena mucyate bhrūṇahat yayā ॥03-82-90॥
[यक्षिण्या (yakṣiṇyā) - by Yakṣiṇī; (a class of female deity, genitive or instrumental); नैत्यकं (naityakam) - observance; ritual; तत्र (tatra) - there; in that place; प्राश्नीत (prāśnīta) - should eat; should partake; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; person; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; clean; यक्षिण्याः (yakṣiṇyāḥ) - of Yakṣiṇī; (genitive); तु (tu) - but; however; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by the favor; by the grace; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is freed; is released; भ्रूणहत्यया (bhrūṇahat yayā) - from the sin of foeticide; from killing an embryo;]
(By Yakṣiṇī, the ritual there should be eaten by a pure man. But by Yakṣiṇī's favor, he is freed from the sin of killing an embryo.)
A pure man should consume the ritual observance connected to Yakṣiṇī there; but by the favor of Yakṣiṇī, one is freed from the sin of killing an embryo. (03-82-90)
मणिनागं ततो गत्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। नैत्यकं भुञ्जते यस्तु मणिनागस्य मानवः ॥०३-८२-९१॥
maṇināgaṁ tato gatvā gosahasraphalaṁ labhet। naityakaṁ bhuñjate yastu maṇināgasya mānavaḥ ॥03-82-91॥
[मणिनागं (maṇināgam) - Maṇināga; (proper noun, serpent king;) ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - cow-thousand-fruit; (fruit equal to a thousand cows;) लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain; नैत्यकं (naityakam) - daily; भुञ्जते (bhuñjate) - enjoys; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; मणिनागस्य (maṇināgasya) - of Maṇināga; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(Maṇināga thereafter having gone, fruit equal to a thousand cows may obtain. Daily enjoys who but of Maṇināga man.)
Whoever, having gone to Maṇināga, obtains the fruit equivalent to a thousand cows; but the man who partakes daily of Maṇināga (rites or offerings) enjoys (such merit). (03-82-91)
दष्टस्याशीविषेणापि न तस्य क्रमते विषम्। तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८२-९२॥
daṣṭasyāśī-viṣeṇāpi na tasya kramate viṣam। tatroṣya rajanīm ekāṃ sarva-pāpaiḥ pramucyate॥03-82-92॥
[दष्टस्य (daṣṭasya) - bitten; by bitten; by one who is bitten; of the one bitten; आशीविषेण (āśīviṣeṇa) - by cobra-poison; by the poison of a serpent; अपि (api) - even; also; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; क्रमते (kramate) - spreads; goes; proceeds; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; तत्र (tatra) - there; उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; spending; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; सर्वपापैः (sarva-pāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released; is freed;]
(Even by the poison of a cobra of the one bitten, the poison does not spread for him. There having spent one night, he is released from all sins. (03-82-92))
Even when bitten by the poison of a cobra, its poison does not spread in his body. By spending one night there, he is freed from all sins. (03-82-92)

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; ब्रह्मर्षेः (brahmarṣeḥ) - of the Brahmarṣi; गौतमस्य (gautamasya) - of Gautama; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; अहल्यायाः (ahalyāyāḥ) - of Ahalya; ह्रदे (hṛde) - in the pool; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme;]
(Then should go to the forest of the Brahmarṣi Gautama, O king. Having bathed in the pool of Ahalya, should go to the supreme state. Having approached prosperity, O king, obtains prosperity supreme. (03-82-93))
Then, O king, one should go to the forest of the sage Gautama. After bathing in Ahalya’s pool, one attains the highest state. Having thus approached prosperity, O king, one attains the highest prosperity. (03-82-93)
तत्रोदपानो धर्मज्ञ त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। तत्राभिषेकं कृत्वा तु वाजिमेधमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-९४॥
tatrodapāno dharmajña triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kṛtvā tu vājimedham avāpnuyāt ॥03-82-94॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; उदपानः (udapānaḥ) - well (water-source); धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - renowned; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - consecration; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; तु (tu) - but; वाजिमेधम् (vājimedham) - Aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - he would obtain;]
(There, a well, knower of dharma, renowned in the three worlds. There, having performed consecration indeed, he would obtain Aśvamedha sacrifice.)
There is a well, famous among the three worlds as known to the righteous. There, by performing the consecration, one may attain the fruit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-82-94)
जनकस्य तु राजर्षेः कूपस्त्रिदशपूजितः। तत्राभिषेकं कृत्वा तु विष्णुलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-९५॥
janakasya tu rājarṣeḥ kūpastridaśapūjitaḥ। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kṛtvā tu viṣṇulokam avāpnuyāt॥03-82-95॥

(Of Janaka, but of the royal sage, the well honored by the gods; there, having performed the ablution indeed, the world of Viṣṇu one attains.)
But the well of the royal sage Janaka, honored by the gods—if one performs ablution there, surely one attains the world of Viṣṇu. (03-82-95)
ततो विनशनं गच्छेत्सर्वपापप्रमोचनम्। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति सोमलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-९६॥
tato vinaśanaṁ gacchetsarvapāpapramocanam। vājapeyamavāpnoti somalokaṁ ca gacchati ॥03-82-96॥

(Then, he should go to Vinaśana, the place which liberates from all sins. He obtains the Vājapeya, and he goes to the world of Soma.)
Then, one should go to Vinaśana, which frees from all sins. One attains the merit of the Vājapeya sacrifice and reaches the world of Soma (the Moon). (03-82-96)
गण्डकीं तु समासाद्य सर्वतीर्थजलोद्भवाम्। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति सूर्यलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-९७॥

(Gaṇḍakī river but having attained, originating from all sacred waters, the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice attains, the world of the Sun and goes.)
But having reached the Gaṇḍakī, which originates from all the sacred waters, one attains the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice and goes to the world of the Sun. (03-82-97)
ततोऽधिवंश्यं धर्मज्ञ समाविश्य तपोवनम्। गुह्यकेषु महाराज मोदते नात्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-९८॥
tato'dhivaṃśyaṃ dharmajña samāviśya tapovanam। guhyakeṣu mahārāja modate nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥03-82-98॥

कम्पनां तु समासाद्य नदीं सिद्धनिषेविताम्। पुण्डरीकमवाप्नोति सूर्यलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-९९॥
kampaṇāṃ tu samāsādya nadīṃ siddhaniṣeviṭām। puṇḍarīkam avāpnoti sūryalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-82-99॥
[कम्पनाम् (kampaṇām) - Kampa river; तु (tu) - but; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नदीम् (nadīm) - river; सिद्धनिषेविताम् (siddhaniṣeviṭām) - frequented by siddhas; पुण्डरीकम् (puṇḍarīkam) - puṇḍarīka (lotus, or a sacred region); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; सूर्यलोकम् (sūryalokam) - the world of the sun; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(But having approached the Kampa river, the river frequented by siddhas, (one) obtains Puṇḍarīka, and goes to the world of the Sun.)
But when one comes to the Kampa river, which is frequented by siddhas, one attains Puṇḍarīka and also reaches the realm of the Sun. (03-82-99)
ततो विशालामासाद्य नदीं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुताम्। अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-१००॥
tato viśālām āsādya nadīṃ trailokya-viśrutām। agniṣṭomam avāpnoti svarga-lokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-100॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विशालाम् (viśālām) - vast; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; नदीम् (nadīm) - river; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुताम् (trailokya-viśrutām) - renowned in the three worlds; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - Agniṣṭoma (sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svarga-lokam) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Then, having reached the vast river renowned in the three worlds, he obtains Agniṣṭoma and goes to the heavenly world.)
Then, upon reaching the vast river famous throughout the three worlds, one attains the merit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and proceeds to the heavenly realm. (03-82-100)
अथ माहेश्वरीं धारां समासाद्य नराधिप। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-१०१॥
atha māheśvarīṃ dhārāṃ samāsādya narādhipa। aśvamedham avāpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet ॥03-82-101॥
[अथ (atha) - then; माहेश्वरीं (māheśvarīṃ) - Śiva's sacred (stream); धारां (dhārāṃ) - stream; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - approaching; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - lifts up;]
(Then, the king, approaching the stream sacred to Śiva, obtains (the fruit of) a horse-sacrifice, and indeed lifts up (his) family.)
Then, the king who approaches the sacred stream of Shiva attains the merit of a horse-sacrifice and indeed uplifts his entire family. (03-82-101)
दिवौकसां पुष्करिणीं समासाद्य नरः शुचिः। न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति वाजपेयं च विन्दति ॥०३-८२-१०२॥
divaukasāṃ puṣkariṇīṃ samāsādya naraḥ śuciḥ। na durgatim-avāpnoti vājapeyaṃ ca vindati॥03-82-102॥
[दिवौकसां (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven; पुष्करिणीं (puṣkariṇīm) - lotus-pond; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नरः (naraḥ) - man; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - evil state; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; वाजपेयं (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya (sacrifice or reward); च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains;]
(Having approached the lotus-pond of the dwellers of heaven, a pure man does not attain an evil state, and obtains Vājapeya.)
By approaching the lotus-pond of the dwellers of heaven, a pure man does not fall into misfortune and also gains the reward of the Vājapeya sacrifice. (03-82-102)
महेश्वरपदं गच्छेद्ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। महेश्वरपदे स्नात्वा वाजिमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-१०३॥
maheśvarapadaṃ gacched brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। maheśvarapade snātvā vājimedhaphalaṃ labhet॥03-82-103॥
[महेश्वरपदं (maheśvarapadam) - the place of Maheśvara; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - the celibate; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; महेश्वरपदे (maheśvarapade) - at the place of Maheśvara; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; वाजिमेधफलं (vājimedhaphalaṃ) - the fruit of the horse-sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - attains;]
(The celibate who is concentrated should go to the place of Maheśvara. Having bathed at the place of Maheśvara, (he) attains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice. (03-82-103))
A celibate, firmly concentrated, should go to the abode of Maheśvara. By bathing at the abode of Maheśvara, he attains the fruit of the Vājimedha sacrifice. (03-82-103)
तत्र कोटिस्तु तीर्थानां विश्रुता भरतर्षभ। कूर्मरूपेण राजेन्द्र असुरेण दुरात्मना ॥ ह्रियमाणाहृता राजन्विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥०३-८२-१०४॥
tatra koṭistu tīrthānāṃ viśrutā bharatarṣabha। kūrmarūpeṇa rājendra asureṇa durātmanā ॥ hriyamāṇāhṛtā rājan viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā ॥03-82-104॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; कोटिः (koṭiḥ) - a crore (ten million); तु (tu) - but; indeed; तीर्थानाम् (tīrthānām) - of sacred places; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - famed; well-known; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; कूर्मरूपेण (kūrmarūpeṇa) - in the form of a tortoise; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; असु्रेण (asureṇa) - by the Asura; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - with evil soul; ह्रियमाणा (hriyamāṇā) - being carried away; हृता (hṛtā) - taken; seized; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; प्रभविष्णुना (prabhaviṣṇunā) - by the powerful Viṣṇu;]
(There, O best of the Bharatas, but a crore of sacred places are famed. In the form of a tortoise, O king, by the Asura with an evil soul, being carried away, taken, O king, by Viṣṇu, by the powerful Viṣṇu.)
There, O foremost of Bharatas, countless sacred places became renowned. When the evil-souled Asura tried to carry them away in the form of a tortoise, O king, they were seized by Viṣṇu, the powerful Lord. (03-82-104)
तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वाणस्तीर्थकोट्यां युधिष्ठिर। पुण्डरीकमवाप्नोति विष्णुलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-१०५॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvāṇas tīrthakoṭyāṃ yudhiṣṭhira। puṇḍarīkam avāpnoti viṣṇulokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-82-105॥

(There consecration performing at Tīrthakoṭi, Yudhiṣṭhira, Puṇḍarīka (merit) obtains, the world of Viṣṇu and goes.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, whoever performs consecration there at Tīrthakoṭi gains the merit called Puṇḍarīka and goes to the world of Viṣṇu. (03-82-105)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र स्थानं नारायणस्य तु। सदा संनिहितो यत्र हरिर्वसति भारत ॥ शालग्राम इति ख्यातो विष्णोरद्भुतकर्मणः ॥०३-८२-१०६॥
tato gacchet rājendra sthānaṃ nārāyaṇasya tu। sadā saṃnihito yatra harir vasati bhārata ॥ śālagrāma iti khyāto viṣṇor adbhutakarmaṇaḥ ॥03-82-106॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; स्थानं (sthānam) - place; नारायणस्य (nārāyaṇasya) - of Nārāyaṇa; तु (tu) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; संनिहितः (saṃnihitaḥ) - present; यत्र (yatra) - where; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; वसति (vasati) - dwells; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; शालग्राम (śālagrāma) - Śālagrāma; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - is known; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; अद्भुतकर्मणः (adbhutakarmaṇaḥ) - of wonderful deeds;]
(Then should go, O best of kings, to the place of Nārāyaṇa indeed. Always present where Hari dwells, O descendant of Bharata. Śālagrāma thus is known, of Viṣṇu of wonderful deeds.)
Then, O king, you should go to the abode of Nārāyaṇa, where Hari (Viṣṇu) always dwells, O Bhārata. That place is known as Śālagrāma, famed for Viṣṇu's wondrous deeds. (03-82-106)
अभिगम्य त्रिलोकेशं वरदं विष्णुमव्ययम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति विष्णुलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-१०७॥
abhigamya trilokeśaṃ varadaṃ viṣṇum avyayam। aśvamedham avāpnoti viṣṇulokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-107॥
[अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; त्रिलोकेशं (trilokeśam) - lord of the three worlds; वरदं (varadam) - bestower of boons; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - aśvamedha sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; विष्णुलोकं (viṣṇulokam) - abode of Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Having approached the lord of the three worlds, the bestower of boons, the imperishable Viṣṇu, one attains the aśvamedha sacrifice and goes to the abode of Viṣṇu.)
Whoever approaches Viṣṇu, the imperishable bestower of boons and lord of the three worlds, attains the fruit of an aśvamedha sacrifice and reaches the abode of Viṣṇu. (03-82-107)
तत्रोदपानो धर्मज्ञ सर्वपापप्रमोचनः। समुद्रास्तत्र चत्वारः कूपे संनिहिताः सदा ॥ तत्रोपस्पृश्य राजेन्द्र न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-१०८॥
tatrodapāno dharmajña sarvapāpapramocanaḥ। samudrās tatra catvāraḥ kūpe saṃnihitāḥ sadā ॥ tatropaspṛśya rājendra na durgatim avāpnuyāt ॥03-82-108॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; उदपानः (udapānaḥ) - well; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; सर्वपापप्रमोचनः (sarvapāpapramocanaḥ) - remover of all sins; समुद्राः (samudrāḥ) - oceans; तत्र (tatra) - there; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; कूपे (kūpe) - in the well; संनिहिताः (saṃnihitāḥ) - present; सदा (sadā) - always; तत्र (tatra) - there; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (purified by washing); राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - misfortune; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - might attain;]
(There the well, O knower of dharma, remover of all sins; oceans there, four, are always present in the well. There, having touched (purified by washing), O king, one would not attain misfortune. (03-82-108))
There is a well, O knower of dharma, capable of removing all sins; in that well, the four oceans are always present. There, after washing (or purifying oneself), O king, one does not meet with misfortune. (03-82-108)
अभिगम्य महादेवं वरदं विष्णुमव्ययम्। विराजति यथा सोम ऋणैर्मुक्तो युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-८२-१०९॥
abhigamya mahādevaṃ varadaṃ viṣṇum avyayam। virājati yathā soma ṛṇair mukto yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-82-109॥
[अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; महादेवं (mahādevaṃ) - the great god; वरदं (varadaṃ) - giver of boons; विष्णुमव्ययम् (viṣṇum avyayam) - Vishnu, the imperishable; विराजति (virājati) - shines; यथा (yathā) - just as; सौम (soma) - Soma (the moon); ऋणैः (ṛṇaiḥ) - from debts; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira;]
(Having approached the great god, the giver of boons, Vishnu the imperishable, shines just as Soma (the moon) freed from debts, Yudhishthira.)

जातिस्मर उपस्पृश्य शुचिः प्रयतमानसः। जातिस्मरत्वं प्राप्नोति स्नात्वा तत्र न संशयः ॥०३-८२-११०॥
jātismara upaspṛśya śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ। jātismaratvaṃ prāpnoti snātvā tatra na saṃśayaḥ॥03-82-110॥
[जातिस्मर (jātismara) - one who remembers former births; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having sprinkled oneself (with water); शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with controlled mind; जातिस्मरत्वं (jātismaratvaṃ) - the state of remembering former births; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(One who remembers former births, having sprinkled oneself (with water), pure, with controlled mind, attains the state of remembering former births, having bathed there, not doubt.)
One who remembers former births, after bathing there with a pure and controlled mind, having sprinkled himself, attains the state of remembering past lives—there is no doubt about this. (03-82-110)
वटेश्वरपुरं गत्वा अर्चयित्वा तु केशवम्। ईप्सिताँल्लभते कामानुपवासान्न संशयः ॥०३-८२-१११॥
vaṭeśvarapuraṃ gatvā arcayitvā tu keśavam। īpsitāṃllabhate kāmānupavāsānna saṃśayaḥ ॥03-82-111॥
[वटेश्वरपुरं (vaṭeśvarapuram) - Vaṭeśvarapura (the city of Vaṭeśvara); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; तु (tu) - indeed; but; केशवम् (keśavam) - Keśava (Krishna/Vishnu); ईप्सितान् (īpsitān) - desired; लभते (labhate) - obtains; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; उपवासन् (upavāsān) - after fasts; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Having gone to Vaṭeśvarapura, having worshipped indeed Keśava, obtains (his) desired desires after fasts; not (there is) doubt.)
One who goes to Vaṭeśvarapura and worships Keśava (Vishnu) surely obtains his desired wishes after fasting; there is no doubt about it. (03-82-111)
ततस्तु वामनं गत्वा सर्वपापप्रमोचनम्। अभिवाद्य हरिं देवं न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-११२॥
tatastu vāmanaṃ gatvā sarvapāpapramocanam। abhivādya hariṃ devaṃ na durgatimavāpnuyāt ॥03-82-112॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; वामनं (vāmanaṃ) - Vāmana (the dwarf, Viṣṇu's incarnation); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् (sarvapāpapramocanam) - liberator from all sins; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - after bowing to; हरिं (hariṃ) - Hari (Viṣṇu); देवम् (devaṃ) - the god; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - evil state; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - would attain;]
(Then but, having gone to Vāmana, liberator from all sins, after bowing to Hari, the god, not evil state would attain.)
Then, having gone to Vāmana, the liberator from all sins, and having bowed to Hari, the god, one does not attain an evil state. (03-82-112)
भरतस्याश्रमं गत्वा सर्वपापप्रमोचनम्। कौशिकीं तत्र सेवेत महापातकनाशिनीम् ॥ राजसूयस्य यज्ञस्य फलं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८२-११३॥
bharatasya āśramaṃ gatvā sarva-pāpa-pramocanam। kauśikīṃ tatra seveta mahā-pātaka-nāśinīm॥ rājasūyasya yajñasya phalaṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-82-113॥
[भरतस्य (bharatasya) - of Bharata; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् (sarva-pāpa-pramocanam) - releasing from all sins; कौशिकीं (kauśikīm) - (the river) Kauśikī; तत्र (tatra) - there; सेवेत (seveta) - should serve; महापातकनाशिनीम् (mahā-pātaka-nāśinīm) - destroyer of great sins; राजसूयस्य (rājasūyasya) - of the rājasūya (royal consecration); यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(Having gone to Bharata's hermitage, releasing from all sins, there one should serve Kauśikī, the destroyer of great sins. A man obtains the fruit of the rājasūya sacrifice.)
A man who goes to Bharata's hermitage, which liberates from all sins, and serves the river Kauśikī there, who destroys great sins, attains the merit of performing the rājasūya sacrifice. (03-82-113)
ततो गच्छेत धर्मज्ञ चम्पकारण्यमुत्तमम्। तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-११४॥
tato gacchet dharmajña campakāraṇyam uttamam। tatroṣya rajanim ekāṁ gosahasraphalaṁ labhet ॥03-82-114॥

(From there one should go, knower of dharma, to the excellent Campaka forest. There, having stayed for one night, the fruit of a thousand cows may obtain.)
From there, the knower of dharma should go to the excellent Campaka forest; staying there for one night, he obtains the fruit equal to giving a thousand cows. (03-82-114)
अथ ज्येष्ठिलमासाद्य तीर्थं परमसंमतम्। उपोष्य रजनीमेकामग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-११५॥
atha jyeṣṭhilam āsādya tīrthaṃ paramasaṃmatam। upoṣya rajanīm ekām agniṣṭomaphalaṃ labhet॥03-82-115॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ज्येष्ठिलम् (jyeṣṭhilam) - in the month of Jyeṣṭha; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; परमसंमतम् (paramasaṃmatam) - supremely revered; उपोष्य (upoṣya) - having fasted; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭomaphalam) - fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - one attains;]
(Then, in the month of Jyeṣṭha, having reached the supremely revered sacred place, having fasted for one night, one attains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)
Then, reaching the highly revered sacred place in the month of Jyeṣṭha and having fasted for one night, one receives the result equivalent to an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-82-115)
तत्र विश्वेश्वरं दृष्ट्वा देव्या सह महाद्युतिम्। मित्रावरुणयोर्लोकानाप्नोति पुरुषर्षभ ॥०३-८२-११६॥
tatra viśveśvaraṃ dṛṣṭvā devyā saha mahādyutim। mitrāvaruṇayor lokān āpnoti puruṣarṣabha ॥03-82-116॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; विश्वेश्वरम् (viśveśvaram) - Viśveśvara; lord of the universe; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; देव्याः (devyā) - with the goddess; (instrumental singular feminine) सह (saha) - together with; महाद्युतिम् (mahādyutim) - of great splendor; मित्रावरुणयोर् (mitrāvaruṇayor) - of Mitra and Varuṇa; (dual genitive) लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best among men;]
(There, having seen Viśveśvara of great splendor together with the goddess, O best among men, one attains the worlds of Mitra and Varuṇa.)
O best of men, there, having seen Viśveśvara of great radiance along with the goddess, one attains the worlds of Mitra and Varuṇa. (3-82-116)
कन्यासंवेद्यमासाद्य नियतो नियताशनः। मनोः प्रजापतेर्लोकानाप्नोति भरतर्षभ ॥०३-८२-११७॥
kanyāsaṃvedyam āsādya niyataḥ niyatāśanaḥ। manoḥ prajāpater lokān āpnoti bharatarṣabha ॥03-82-117॥
[कन्या-संवेद्यम् (kanyā-saṃvedyam) - woman-touchable; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियत-आशनः (niyata-āśanaḥ) - restrained in eating; मनोः (manoḥ) - of Manu; प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of the progenitor; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
(Having attained a woman-touchable, self-controlled, restrained in eating, the worlds of Manu, of the progenitor, attains, O best of Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, having approached that which is touchable by women, a self-controlled and restrained eater attains the worlds of Manu, the progenitor. (03-82-117)
कन्यायां ये प्रयच्छन्ति पानमन्नं च भारत। तदक्षयमिति प्राहुरृषयः संशितव्रताः ॥०३-८२-११८॥
kanyāyāṃ ye prayacchanti pānam annaṃ ca bhārata। tad akṣayam iti prāhur ṛṣayaḥ sanśitavratāḥ ॥03-82-118॥
[कन्यायां (kanyāyām) - to a maiden; ये (ye) - those who; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; पानम् (pānam) - drink; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तत् (tat) - that; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; इति (iti) - thus; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - say; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; संशितव्रताः (sanśitavratāḥ) - firm of vow;]
(To a maiden those who give drink, food and, O Bhārata, that imperishable thus say sages firm of vow.)
O Bhārata, the sages who are firm in their vows say that the act of those who give food and drink to a maiden is imperishable. (03-82-118)
निश्चीरां च समासाद्य त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुताम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति विष्णुलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-११९॥
niścīrāṃ ca samāsādya triṣu lokeṣu viśrutām। aśvamedham avāpnoti viṣṇulokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-119॥
[निश्चीरां (niścīrām) - the Niścīrā (river); च (ca) - and; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुताम् (viśrutām) - renowned; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the horse sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; विष्णुलोकं (viṣṇulokam) - the world of Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(And having reached the Niścīrā, renowned in the three worlds, (one) attains the horse sacrifice, and goes to the world of Viṣṇu.)
Having reached the Niścīrā, renowned throughout the three worlds, a person attains the merit of a horse sacrifice and goes to the world of Viṣṇu. (03-82-119)
ये तु दानं प्रयच्छन्ति निश्चीरासङ्गमे नराः। ते यान्ति नरशार्दूल ब्रह्मलोकं न संशयः ॥०३-८२-१२०॥
ye tu dānaṃ prayacchanti niścīrāsaṅgame narāḥ। te yānti naraśārdūla brahmalokaṃ na saṃśayaḥ॥03-82-120॥
[ये (ye) (ye) - who; तु (tu) (tu) - but; दानं (dānam) (dānaṃ) - gift; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) (prayacchanti) - give; निश्चीरासङ्गमे (niścīrāsaṅgame) (niścīrāsaṅgame) - at the purified confluence; नराः (narāḥ) (narāḥ) - men; ते (te) (te) - they; यान्ति (yānti) (yānti) - go; नरशार्दूल (naraśārdūla) (naraśārdūla) - O best of men; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokaṃ) (brahmalokaṃ) - Brahma world; न (na) (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Who but gifts give at the purified confluence men, they go, O best of men, to Brahma world, not doubt.)
O best of men, those men who give gifts at the purified confluence surely go to the world of Brahma, there is no doubt. (03-82-120)
तत्राश्रमो वसिष्ठस्य त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वाणो वाजपेयमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८२-१२१॥
tatrāśramo vasiṣṭhasya triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvāṇo vājapeyam avāpnuyāt॥03-82-121॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - famed; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - consecration; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya (sacrifice); अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may obtain;]
(There hermitage of Vasiṣṭha in the three worlds famed. There consecration performing, Vājapeya may obtain.)
There is the hermitage of Vasiṣṭha, renowned in the three worlds. There, one performing the consecration (abhiṣeka) may obtain the Vājapeya (sacrifice). (03-82-121)
देवकूटं समासाद्य ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेवितम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८२-१२२॥
devakūṭaṃ samāsādya brahmarṣigaṇasevitam। aśvamedham avāpnoti kulaṃ caiva samuddharet॥03-82-122॥
[देवकूटं (devakūṭam) - Devakūṭa (the sacred place); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेवितम् (brahmarṣigaṇasevitam) - attended by hosts of Brahmarṣis; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the Aśvamedha (sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - lifts up;]
(Having reached Devakūṭa, attended by hosts of Brahmarṣis, one obtains the Aśvamedha (sacrifice), and indeed lifts up (his) family.)
By reaching Devakūṭa, which is attended by trains of Brahmarṣis, one attains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and truly uplifts his entire family. (03-82-122)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र कौशिकस्य मुनेर्ह्रदम्। यत्र सिद्धिं परां प्राप्तो विश्वामित्रोऽथ कौशिकः ॥०३-८२-१२३॥
tato gacchet rājendra kauśikasya muner hradam। yatra siddhiṁ parāṁ prāpto viśvāmitro'tha kauśikaḥ ॥03-82-123॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; कौशिकस्य (kauśikasya) - of Kauśika; मुनेः (muner) - of the sage; ह्रदम् (hradam) - lake; यत्र (yatra) - where; सिद्धिं (siddhiṁ) - success; पराम् (parām) - supreme; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; अथ (atha) - then; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - Kauśika;]
(Then should go, O king, to the lake of the sage Kauśika, where success supreme obtained Viśvāmitra then Kauśika.)
Then, O king, you should go to the lake of the sage Kauśika, where Viśvāmitra, also called Kauśika, attained the highest perfection. (03-82-123)
तत्र मासं वसेद्वीर कौशिक्यां भरतर्षभ। अश्वमेधस्य यत्पुण्यं तन्मासेनाधिगच्छति ॥०३-८२-१२४॥
tatra māsaṃ vased vīra kauśikyāṃ bharatarṣabha। aśvamedhasya yat puṇyaṃ tan māsena adhigacchati॥03-82-124॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मासं (māsaṃ) - a month; वसेत् (vaset) - (he) should reside; वीर (vīra) - O hero; कौशिक्यां (kauśikyāṃ) - on the Kauśikī (river); भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; अश्वमेधस्य (aśvamedhasya) - of the horse-sacrifice; यत् (yat) - whatever; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - merit; तत् (tat) - that; मासेन (māsena) - by (the) month; अधिगच्छति (adhigacchati) - (he) attains;]
(There a month should reside, O hero, on the Kauśikī, bull among the Bharatas. The merit of the horse-sacrifice, whatever (it may be), that by (the) month he attains.)
O bull among the Bharatas, if a hero resides for a month on the Kauśikī river, he attains by that month whatever merit is gained by performing the horse-sacrifice. (03-82-124)
सर्वतीर्थवरे चैव यो वसेत महाह्रदे। न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति विन्देद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८२-१२५॥
sarvatīrthavare caiva yo vaset mahāhrade। na durgatim avāpnoti vinded bahu suvarṇakam ॥03-82-125॥
[सर्वतीर्थवरे (sarvatīrthavare) - in the greatest of all sacred fords; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; वसेत् (vaset) - should dwell; महाह्रदे (mahāhrade) - in the great lake; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - misfortune; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; विन्देत् (vindet) - obtains; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold;]
(In the greatest of all sacred fords, and indeed, whoever should dwell in the great lake, does not attain misfortune, obtains much gold.)
Whoever dwells in the greatest of all holy places, in the great lake, does not come to misfortune and obtains much gold. (03-82-125)
कुमारमभिगत्वा च वीराश्रमनिवासिनम्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति नरो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-१२६॥
kumāram abhigatvā ca vīrāśramanivāsinam। aśvamedham avāpnoti naro nāsty atra sanśayaḥ॥03-82-126॥
[कुमारम् (kumāram) - youth; prince; अभिगत्वा (abhigatvā) - having approached; having gone near; च (ca) - and; वीराश्रमनिवासिनम् (vīrāśramanivāsinam) - dweller in the hermitage of heroes; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; achieves; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (sanśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Having approached the youth who dwells in the hermitage of heroes, a man obtains the aśvamedha; here there is no doubt.)
If a man approaches the youth dwelling in the hermitage of heroes, he attains the fruit of an aśvamedha sacrifice; there is no doubt about this. (03-82-126)
अग्निधारां समासाद्य त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुताम्। अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति न च स्वर्गान्निवर्तते ॥०३-८२-१२७॥
agnidhārāṃ samāsādya triṣu lokeṣu viśrutām। agniṣṭomam avāpnoti na ca svargān nivartate॥03-82-127॥
[अग्निधाराम् (agnidhārām) - stream of fire; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुताम् (viśrutām) - well-known; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - agniṣṭoma (sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स्वर्गात् (svargāt) - from heaven; निवर्तते (nivartate) - returns;]
(Having attained the stream of fire, well-known in the three worlds, he obtains the agniṣṭoma, and does not return from heaven.)
Having reached the stream of fire, which is renowned throughout the three worlds, one attains the Agniṣṭoma (sacrifice) and does not return from heaven. (03-82-127)
पितामहसरो गत्वा शैलराजप्रतिष्ठितम्। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वाणो अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-१२८॥
pitāmaha-saro gatvā śailarāja-pratiṣṭhitam। tatra abhiṣekaṁ kurvāṇo agniṣṭoma-phalaṁ labheta ॥03-82-128॥
[पितामहसरो (pitāmaha-saraḥ) - the lake of Brahmā; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; शैलराजप्रतिष्ठितम् (śailarāja-pratiṣṭhitam) - established by the king of mountains; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - ablution; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; अग्निष्टोमफलं (agniṣṭoma-phalam) - the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - one obtains;]
(Having gone to the Brahmā’s lake, established by the king of mountains, performing ablution there, one obtains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)
Whoever goes to the Brahmā’s lake, established by the king of mountains, and performs an ablution there, obtains the merit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-82-128)
पितामहस्य सरसः प्रस्रुता लोकपावनी। कुमारधारा तत्रैव त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥०३-८२-१२९॥
pitāmahasya sarasaḥ prasrutā lokapāvanī। kumāradhārā tatraiva triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā ॥03-82-129॥
[पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of the Grandfather; (Brahmā); सरसः (sarasaḥ) - of the lake; प्रस्रुता (prasrutā) - flowed forth; लोकपावनी (lokapāvanī) - purifier of the worlds; कुमारधारा (kumāradhārā) - the Kumāra-stream; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - renowned;]
(Of the Grandfather's lake flowed forth, purifier of the worlds. The Kumāra-stream there itself, in the three worlds, is renowned.)
From the lake of Brahmā flowed forth a stream, purifying the worlds. There, the Kumāra-stream itself is renowned in all three worlds. (03-82-129)
यत्र स्नात्वा कृतार्थोऽस्मीत्यात्मानमवगच्छति। षष्ठकालोपवासेन मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया ॥०३-८२-१३०॥
yatra snātvā kṛtārtho'smītyātmānamavagacchati। ṣaṣṭhakālopa-vāsena mucyate brahmahatyayā॥03-82-130॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - fulfilled (one's purpose); अस्मीत्य् (asmītya) - thinking 'I am'; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; अवगच्छति (avagacchati) - realizes; षष्ठकालोपवासेन (ṣaṣṭhakālopa-vāsena) - by a fast (observed) for six periods; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is released; ब्रह्महत्यया (brahmahatyayā) - from brahmahatyā (the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa);]
(Where, having bathed, fulfilled (one's purpose), thinking 'I am' oneself realizes; by a fast for six periods is released from brahmahatyā.)
Where, after bathing and having fulfilled one's purpose, a person realizes himself as 'I am,' by undertaking a fast for six periods, he is released from the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa. (03-82-130)
शिखरं वै महादेव्या गौर्यास्त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। समारुह्य नरः श्राद्धः स्तनकुण्डेषु संविशेत् ॥०३-८२-१३१॥
śikharaṁ vai mahādevyā gauryās trailokya-viśrutam। samāruhya naraḥ śrāddhaḥ stanakuṇḍeṣu saṁviśet॥03-82-131॥
[शिखरं (śikharaṁ) - peak; वै (vai) - indeed; महादेव्या (mahādevyāḥ) - of Mahādevī; गौर्याः (gauryāḥ) - of Gaurī; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokya-viśrutam) - renowned in the three worlds; समारुह्य (samāruhya) - having ascended; नरः (naraḥ) - man; श्राद्धः (śrāddhaḥ) - one performing śrāddha; स्तनकुण्डेषु (stanakuṇḍeṣu) - on the breast-shaped hollows; संविशेत् (saṁviśet) - should lie down;]
(The peak indeed of Mahādevī Gaurī, renowned in the three worlds, having ascended, a man performing śrāddha should lie down on the breast-shaped hollows.)
A man performing śrāddha, having ascended the peak of Mahādevī Gaurī, which is renowned throughout the three worlds, should lie down upon the breast-shaped hollows. (03-82-131)
तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वाणः पितृदेवार्चने रतः। हयमेधमवाप्नोति शक्रलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-१३२॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvāṇaḥ pitṛdevārcane rataḥ। hayamedham avāpnoti śakralokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-82-132॥

(There, performing anointing, engaged in the worship of the ancestors and gods, attains the horse-sacrifice, and goes to the world of Indra.)
There, performing the anointing and being devoted to the worship of the ancestors and gods, one attains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice and goes to the world of Indra. (03-82-132)
ताम्रारुणं समासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति शक्रलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-१३३॥
tāmrāruṇaṃ samāsādya brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti śakralokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-133॥
[ताम्रारुणम् (tāmrāruṇam) - copper-red (substance); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having obtained; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - the celibate; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; शक्रलोकम् (śakralokam) - the world of Indra; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Having obtained the copper-red (substance), the celibate concentrated obtains the aśvamedha (sacrifice) and goes to the world of Indra.)

नन्दिन्यां च समासाद्य कूपं त्रिदशसेवितम्। नरमेधस्य यत्पुण्यं तत्प्राप्नोति कुरूद्वह ॥०३-८२-१३४॥
nandinyāṃ ca samāsādya kūpaṃ tridaśasevitam। naramedhasya yat puṇyaṃ tat prāpnoti kurūdvaha ॥03-82-134॥
[नन्दिन्यां (nandinyāṃ) - in Nandinī (the river); च (ca) - and; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; कूपं (kūpam) - well; त्रिदशसेवितम् (tridaśasevitam) - attended by the gods; नरमेधस्य (naramedhasya) - of human sacrifice; यत् (yat) - which; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - merit; तत् (tat) - that; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of Kurus;]
(In Nandinī and having reached the well attended by the gods, the merit which is of human sacrifice, that attains, O best of Kurus.)
O best of Kurus, having reached the well attended by the gods in the Nandinī, one attains the same merit as that of a human sacrifice. (03-82-134)
कालिकासङ्गमे स्नात्वा कौशिक्यारुणयोर्यतः। त्रिरात्रोपोषितो विद्वान्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८२-१३५॥
kālikāsaṅgame snātvā kauśikyāruṇayoryataḥ। trirātropoṣito vidvānsarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate॥03-82-135॥
[कालिकासङ्गमे (kālikāsaṅgame) - in the confluence of (river) Kālīkā; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; कौशिक्या-अरुणयोः (kauśikyā-aruṇayoḥ) - at (the rivers) Kauśikī and Aruṇā; यतः (yataḥ) - from where; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātrapoṣitaḥ) - who has fasted three nights; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise one; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(Having bathed at the confluence of Kālīkā, at (the rivers) Kauśikī and Aruṇā, from where, who has fasted three nights, the wise one is released from all sins.)
He who, having bathed at the confluence of the Kālīkā river where the Kauśikī and Aruṇā meet, and who has fasted for three nights, the wise one is freed from all sins. (03-82-135)
उर्वशीतीर्थमासाद्य ततः सोमाश्रमं बुधः। कुम्भकर्णाश्रमे स्नात्वा पूज्यते भुवि मानवः ॥०३-८२-१३६॥
urvaśī-tīrtham āsādya tataḥ soma-āśramam budhaḥ। kumbhakarṇa-āśrame snātvā pūjyate bhuvi mānavaḥ॥03-82-136॥
[उर्वशीतीर्थम् (urvaśī-tīrtham) - to Urvaśī’s sacred ford; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सोमाश्रमम् (soma-āśramam) - Soma’s hermitage; बुधः (budhaḥ) - the wise man; कुम्भकर्णाश्रमे (kumbhakarṇa-āśrame) - at Kumbhakarṇa’s hermitage; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is worshipped; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(Having reached Urvaśī’s sacred ford, then the wise man Soma’s hermitage, having bathed at Kumbhakarṇa’s hermitage, is worshipped on earth, the man.)
After reaching Urvaśī’s sacred ford and then Soma’s hermitage, a man who bathes at Kumbhakarṇa’s hermitage is honored on earth. (03-82-136)
स्नात्वा कोकामुखे पुण्ये ब्रह्मचारी यतव्रतः। जातिस्मरत्वं प्राप्नोति दृष्टमेतत्पुरातने ॥०३-८२-१३७॥
snātvā kokāmukhe puṇye brahmacārī yatavratāḥ। jātismaratvaṃ prāpnoti dṛṣṭam etat purātane॥03-82-137॥
[स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; कोकामुखे (kokāmukhe) - at Kokāmukha; पुण्ये (puṇye) - sacred; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - a celibate; यतव्रतः (yatavratāḥ) - of self-controlled vow; जातिस्मरत्वं (jātismaratvam) - recollection of former births; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरातने (purātane) - in ancient times;]
(Having bathed at the sacred Kokāmukha, a celibate of self-controlled vow attains recollection of former births; this was seen in ancient times.)
One who, after bathing at the sacred Kokāmukha, remains a self-controlled celibate, attains recollection of their past births; this was witnessed in ancient times. (03-82-137)
सकृन्नन्दां समासाद्य कृतात्मा भवति द्विजः। सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा शक्रलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८२-१३८॥
sakṛnnandāṃ samāsādya kṛtātmā bhavati dvijaḥ। sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā śakralokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-82-138॥
[सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; नन्दां (nandām) - Nandā (proper noun, river); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; having reached; कृतात्मा (kṛtātmā) - having purified oneself; accomplished in self; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born (brahmin); सर्वपाप (sarvapāpa) - all sins; विशुद्धात्मा (viśuddhātmā) - with purified self; शक्रलोकं (śakralokaṃ) - the world of Indra; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; attains;]
(Once having approached the Nandā (river), the twice-born becomes accomplished in self; being pure of all sins, he attains also the world of Indra.)
By reaching the river Nandā just once, a brahmin becomes purified; freed from all sins, he attains to the world of Indra. (03-82-138)
ऋषभद्वीपमासाद्य सेव्यं क्रौञ्चनिषूदनम्। सरस्वत्यामुपस्पृश्य विमानस्थो विराजते ॥०३-८२-१३९॥
ṛṣabhadvīpam āsādya sevyaṃ krauñcaniṣūdanam। sarasvatyām upaspṛśya vimānastho virājate ॥03-82-139॥
[ऋषभद्वीपम् (ṛṣabhadvīpam) - Ṛṣabha-dvīpa; the continent of Ṛṣabha; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; approached; सेव्यम् (sevyam) - to be served; respected; क्रौञ्चनिषूदनम् (krauñcaniṣūdanam) - slayer of Krauñca; (a name of a deity); सरस्वत्याम् (sarasvatyām) - in the Sarasvatī (river); उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; having purified oneself; विमानस्थः (vimānasthaḥ) - being situated in the vimāna (a flying chariot); विराजते (virājate) - shines; is illustrious;]
(Having reached the continent of Ṛṣabha, the slayer of Krauñca, who is to be served, having purified himself in the Sarasvatī, being situated in the vimāna, shines.)
The slayer of Krauñca, worthy of service, having reached the continent of Ṛṣabha and purified himself in the Sarasvatī, stands resplendent in his aerial chariot. (03-82-139)
औद्दालकं महाराज तीर्थं मुनिनिषेवितम्। तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वीत सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८२-१४०॥
audālakaṃ mahārāja tīrthaṃ muniniṣevi­tam। tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvīta sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-82-140॥
[औद्दालकं (audālakam) - the Audālaka; (sacred place;) महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; मुनिनिषेवितम् (muniniṣevi­tam) - frequented by sages; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - bathing; (ceremony;) कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - one should perform; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(The Audālaka, O great king, is a sacred place frequented by sages; there, bathing should be performed; from all sins, one is released.)
O great king, Audālaka is a sacred place frequented by sages; there, one should perform the bathing ceremony, for one is freed from all sins. (03-82-140)
धर्मतीर्थं समासाद्य पुण्यं ब्रह्मर्षिसेवितम्। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति नरो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८२-१४१॥
dharmatīrthaṁ samāsādya puṇyaṁ brahmarṣisevitam। vājapeyam avāpnoti naro nāsty atra saṁśayaḥ॥03-82-141॥
[धर्मतीर्थं (dharmatīrtham) - sacred ford of dharma; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - meritorious; ब्रह्मर्षिसेवितम् (brahmarṣisevitam) - attended by brahmarṣis; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; नास्त्यत्र (nāsti atra) - there is not here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Having reached the sacred ford of dharma, meritorious, attended by brahmarṣis, Vājapeya (sacrifice) attains a man; there is not here (any) doubt.)
Having reached the sacred pilgrimage of dharma, which is meritorious and attended by Brahmarṣis, a man attains the merit of the Vājapeya. There is no doubt about this. (03-82-141)
तथा चम्पां समासाद्य भागीरथ्यां कृतोदकः। दण्डार्कमभिगम्यैव गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८२-१४२॥
tathā campāṃ samāsādya bhāgīrathyāṃ kṛtodakaḥ। daṇḍārkam abhigamyaiva gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-82-142॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; चम्पां (campāṃ) - Campā (name of a place); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; भागीरथ्यां (bhāgīrathyāṃ) - in (the river) Bhāgīrathī (Gaṅgā); कृतोदकः (kṛtodakaḥ) - having performed oblations with water; दण्डार्कम् (daṇḍārkam) - Daṇḍārka (name of a place); अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; एव (eva) - indeed; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṃ) - the fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one attains;]
(Thus, having reached Campā, having performed oblations with water in Bhāgīrathī, indeed having approached Daṇḍārka, one attains the fruit (merit) of a thousand cows.)
In this way, after reaching Campā, and performing water oblations in the Bhāgīrathī, merely by next approaching Daṇḍārka, one attains the merit equivalent to donating a thousand cows. (03-82-142)
लवेडिकां ततो गच्छेत्पुण्यां पुण्योपसेविताम्। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति विमानस्थश्च पूज्यते ॥०३-८२-१४३॥
laveḍikāṃ tato gacchet puṇyāṃ puṇyopasevitām। vājapeyam avāpnoti vimānasthaś ca pūjyate॥03-82-143॥
[लवेडिकां (laveḍikāṃ) - to Lavedika; (a place's name); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; पुण्यां (puṇyāṃ) - auspicious; holy; पुण्योपसेविताम् (puṇyopasevitām) - served by the virtuous; frequented by the pious; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya (sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; attains; विमानस्थः (vimānasthaḥ) - being in an aerial chariot; च (ca) - and; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored; is worshipped;]
(To Lavedika then should go, auspicious, served by the virtuous. Vājapeya (sacrifice) he obtains, being in an aerial chariot and is honored.)
Then, one should go to Lavedika, the auspicious place frequented by the virtuous. There he attains the merit of the Vājapeya sacrifice, and being in an aerial chariot, is honored. (03-82-143)
