अथ सन्ध्यां समासाद्य संवेद्यं तीर्थमुत्तमम्। उपस्पृश्य नरो विद्वान्भवेन्नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८३-१॥
atha sandhyāṃ samāsādya saṃvedyaṃ tīrtham uttamam। upaspṛśya naro vidvān bhaven nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ ॥03-83-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सन्ध्यां (sandhyām) - junction (twilight period); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; संवेद्यं (saṃvedyam) - to be experienced; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (with water); नरः (naraḥ) - man; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is no; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Then, having approached the twilight, having experienced the supreme sacred place, having touched (with water), man becomes learned; there is no doubt here.)
Then, at the time of twilight, after approaching and experiencing the supreme sacred place and having performed the ritual touch, a man becomes learned; there is no doubt about this. (03-83-1)
रामस्य च प्रसादेन तीर्थं राजन्कृतं पुरा। तल्लोहित्यं समासाद्य विन्द्याद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८३-२॥
rāmasya ca prasādena tīrthaṃ rājan kṛtaṃ purā। tallohityaṃ samāsādya vindyād bahu suvarṇakam ॥03-83-2॥
[रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; च (ca) - and; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by favor; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - holy place; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कृतं (kṛtam) - made; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तत् (tat) - that; लोहित्यं (lohitayam) - Lohitya (the river Lohit); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; विन्द्यात् (vindyāt) - should find; may obtain; बहु (bahu) - much; सुवर्णकम् (suvarṇakam) - gold;]
(By the favor of Rāma and formerly, O king, the holy place was made. Having reached that Lohitya, one should find much gold.)
O king, by the favor of Rāma in former times, the holy place was established. Whoever reaches that Lohitya should find much gold. (03-83-2)
करतोयां समासाद्य त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति कृते पैतामहे विधौ ॥०३-८३-३॥
karatoyāṁ samāsādya trirātrupoṣito naraḥ। aśvamedhamavāpnoti kṛte paitāmahe vidhau॥03-83-3॥
[करतोयाम् (karatoyām) - Karatoya (the river Karatoya); समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; having reached; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātrupoṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha (the horse sacrifice); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; attains; कृते (kṛte) - having done; having performed; पैतामहे (paitāmahe) - ancestral; of the grandsire (Brahmā); विधौ (vidhau) - in the rite; in the procedure;]
(Having reached (the river) Karatoya, having fasted for three nights, a man obtains the Aśvamedha (merit) when, having performed, at the ancestral rite.)
If a man comes to the river Karatoya and observes a fast for three nights, he attains the merit of performing an Aśvamedha sacrifice when performing the ancestral rite. (03-83-3)
गङ्गायास्त्वथ राजेन्द्र सागरस्य च सङ्गमे। अश्वमेधं दशगुणं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥०३-८३-४॥
gaṅgāyās tv atha rājendra sāgarasya ca saṅgame। aśvamedhaṃ daśaguṇaṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ॥03-83-4॥
[गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; water of river Gaṅgā; त् (t) - but; (sandhi part of 'tu' ); अथ (atha) - then; also; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; best of kings; सागरस्य (sāgarasya) - of the ocean; च (ca) - and; सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; in the meeting; अश्वमेधं (aśvamedham) - aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); दशगुणं (daśaguṇam) - ten times (greater); प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they declare; they say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; sages;]
(Of Gaṅgā but then, O king, of the ocean and at the confluence, aśvamedha tenfold they declare, the wise.)
O king, the wise declare that at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the ocean, the result is ten times greater than an aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-83-4)
गङ्गायास्त्वपरं द्वीपं प्राप्य यः स्नाति भारत। त्रिरात्रोपोषितो राजन्सर्वकामानवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८३-५॥
gaṅgāyās tv aparaṃ dvīpaṃ prāpya yaḥ snāti bhārata। trirātroṣito rājan sarvakāmān avāpnuyāt॥03-83-5॥
[गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; (of the river Ganges); तु (tu) - but; indeed; अपरं (aparaṃ) - other; another; द्वीपं (dvīpaṃ) - island; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; having attained; यः (yaḥ) - who; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (O descendant of Bharata); त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātroṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वकामान् (sarvakāmān) - all desires; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - he may attain;]
(Of Gaṅgā, indeed, another island having reached who bathes, O Bhārata, having fasted for three nights, O king, all-desires he may attain.)
O Bhārata, he who, after reaching another island of Gaṅgā, bathes there and has fasted for three nights, O king, may attain all desires. (03-83-5)
ततो वैतरणीं गत्वा नदीं पापप्रमोचनीम्। विरजं तीर्थमासाद्य विराजति यथा शशी ॥०३-८३-६॥
tato vaitaraṇīṃ gatvā nadīṃ pāpapramocanīm। virajaṃ tīrtham āsādya virājati yathā śaśī॥03-83-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; after that; वैतरणीं (vaitaraṇīṃ) - Vaitaraṇī (proper name of the river); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; after going; नदीं (nadīṃ) - river; पापप्रमोचनीम् (pāpapramocanīm) - releasing from sin; sin-removing; विरजं (virajam) - free from passion; free from blemish; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred ford; holy spot; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; approaching; विराजति (virājati) - shines; is resplendent; यथा (yathā) - as; like; शशी (śaśī) - the moon;]
(Then, having gone to the Vaitaraṇī, the river releasing from sin, having reached the holy spot free from passion, shines as the moon.)
Then, after crossing the Vaitaraṇī—the river that frees one from sin—upon reaching the spotless sacred ford, one shines like the moon. (03-83-6)
प्रभवेच्च कुले पुण्ये सर्वपापं व्यपोहति। गोसहस्रफलं लब्ध्वा पुनाति च कुलं नरः ॥०३-८३-७॥
prabhave ca kule puṇye sarvapāpaṃ vyapohati। gosahasraphalaṃ labdhvā punāti ca kulaṃ naraḥ॥03-83-7॥
[प्रभवे (prabhave) - in the lineage; च (ca) - and; कुले (kule) - in the family; पुण्ये (puṇye) - in the meritorious; सर्वपापं (sarvapāpam) - all sin; व्यपोहति (vyapohati) - removes; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - fruit of a thousand cows; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; च (ca) - and; कुलं (kulaṃ) - the family; नरः (naraḥ) - the man;]
(And in the lineage, in the meritorious family, all sin he removes; having obtained the fruit of a thousand cows, the man purifies also the family.)
In a virtuous family, a man removes all sin; having obtained merit equal to a thousand cows, he also purifies the family. (03-83-7)
शोणस्य ज्योतिरथ्याश्च सङ्गमे निवसञ्शुचिः। तर्पयित्वा पितॄन्देवानग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-८॥
śoṇasya jyotirathyāś ca saṅgame nivasañ śuciḥ। tarpayitvā pitṝn devān agniṣṭoma-phalaṃ labheta ॥03-83-8॥
[शोणस्य (śoṇasya) - of the Śoṇa (river); ज्योति-अर्थ्याः (jyoti-arthyāḥ) - of the Jyoti and Arthyā; (rivers) च (ca) - and; सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; निवसन् (nivasan) - dwelling; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; देवान् (devān) - the gods; अग्निष्टोम-फलम् (agniṣṭoma-phalam) - the fruit/result of the Agniṣṭoma (sacrifice); लभेत् (labheta) - one attains;]
(At the confluence of the Śoṇa, Jyoti, and Arthyā rivers, dwelling in purity, having satisfied the ancestors and gods, one attains the fruit of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.)
Whoever dwells in purity at the confluence of the Śoṇa, Jyoti, and Arthyā rivers, and having satisfied the ancestors and gods, attains the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice. (03-83-8)
शोणस्य नर्मदायाश्च प्रभवे कुरुनन्दन। वंशगुल्म उपस्पृश्य वाजिमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-९॥
śoṇasya narmadāyāś ca prabhave kurunandana। vaṃśagulma upaspṛśya vājimēdhaphalaṃ labhet॥03-83-9॥
[शोणस्य (śoṇasya) - of the Śoṇa (river); नर्मदायाः (narmadāyāḥ) - of the Narmadā (river); च (ca) - and; प्रभवे (prabhave) - to the source; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; वंशगुल्म (vaṃśagulma) - bamboo thicket; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; वाजिमेधफलं (vājimēdhaphalaṃ) - fruit/result of the horse-sacrifice (aśvamedha); लभेत् (labhet) - one attains;]
(O delight of the Kurus, having touched the bamboo thicket at the source of the Śoṇa and Narmadā, one attains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice.)
O descendant of the Kurus, one who touches the bamboo thicket at the source of the Śoṇa and Narmadā rivers attains the result of a horse-sacrifice. (03-83-9)
ऋषभं तीर्थमासाद्य कोशलायां नराधिप। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः ॥०३-८३-१०॥
ṛṣabhaṃ tīrtham āsādya kośalāyāṃ narādhipa। vājapeyam avāpnoti trirātropoṣito naraḥ ॥03-83-10॥
[ऋषभं (ṛṣabham) - ṛṣabha tīrtha, the holy place named Ṛṣabha; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred ford; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; कोशलायाम् (kośalāyām) - in Kośalā; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātropoṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(ṛṣabha tīrtha sacred ford having approached in Kośalā O king Vājapeya sacrifice obtains having fasted for three nights man)
O king, having approached the holy place of Ṛṣabha in Kośalā, a man who has fasted for three nights obtains the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice. (03-83-10)
कोशलायां समासाद्य कालतीर्थ उपस्पृशेत्। वृशभैकादशफलं लभते नात्र संशयः ॥०३-८३-११॥
kośalāyāṃ samāsādya kālatīrtha upaspṛśet। vṛṣabhaikādaśaphalaṃ labhate nātra saṃśayaḥ॥03-83-11॥
[कोशलायां (kośalāyām) - in Kośalā; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; कालतीर्थ (kālatīrtha) - Kāla-tīrtha; उपस्पृशेत् (upaspṛśet) - one should touch (the water); वृशभैकादशफलं (vṛṣabhaikādaśaphalaṃ) - the result of (gifting) eleven bulls; लभते (labhate) - obtains; नात्र (nātra) - there is no here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(In Kośalā having reached Kāla-tīrtha, one should touch (the water); the result of eleven bulls obtains, there is no doubt here.)
Having reached Kāla-tīrtha in Kośalā, one who bathes (touches the water) obtains the merit equal to giving eleven bulls; there is no doubt about this. (03-83-11)
पुष्पवत्यामुपस्पृश्य त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः। गोसहस्रफलं विन्द्यात्कुलं चैव समुद्धरेत् ॥०३-८३-१२॥
puṣpavatyām upaspṛśya trirātropoṣito naraḥ । gosahasraphalaṃ vindyāt kulaṃ caiva samuddharet ॥03-83-12॥
[पुष्पवत्याम् (puṣpavatyām) - in the (river) Puṣpavatī; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having taken a bath; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātropoṣitaḥ) - one who has fasted for three nights; नरः (naraḥ) - man; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit of (merit equal to) a thousand cows; विन्द्यात् (vindyāt) - he obtains; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समुद्धरेत् (samuddharet) - he uplifts;]
(In the Puṣpavatī, having taken a bath, one who has fasted for three nights, man, the fruit of (merit equal to) a thousand cows, he obtains; family also indeed he uplifts.)
If a man, having fasted for three nights, bathes in the Puṣpavatī river, he gains the merit of a thousand cows and uplifts his family as well. (03-83-12)
ततो बदरिकातीर्थे स्नात्वा प्रयतमानसः। दीर्घमायुरवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८३-१३॥
tato badarikātīrthe snātvā prayatamānasaḥ। dīrghamāyur avāpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati॥03-83-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; after that; बदरिकातीर्थे (badarikātīrthe) - in the sacred place of Badarikā; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with purified mind; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Then in the sacred place of Badarikā, having bathed with purified mind, long life obtains and the heavenly world also goes.)
After bathing with a purified mind at the sacred place of Badarikā, one obtains long life and also attains the heavenly world. (03-83-13)
ततो महेन्द्रमासाद्य जामदग्न्यनिषेवितम्। रामतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा वाजिमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-१४॥
tato mahendram āsādya jāmadagnyaniṣevitam। rāmatīrthe naraḥ snātvā vājimedhaphalaṃ labhet॥03-83-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; महेन्द्रम् (mahendram) - Mahendra (mountain); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; जामदग्न्यनिषेवितम् (jāmadagnyaniṣevitam) - honored by Rāma (the son of Jamadagni); रामतीर्थे (rāmatīrthe) - at Rāma-tīrtha; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; वाजिमेधफलं (vājimedhaphalaṃ) - the fruit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain;]
(From there, having reached Mahendra, honored by Jamadagni's son, at Rāma-tīrtha, a man having bathed may obtain the fruit of the Aśvamedha sacrifice.)
From there, having reached Mahendra, which was honored by the son of Jamadagni, at Rāma-tīrtha, a man who bathes may obtain the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-83-14)
मतङ्गस्य तु केदारस्तत्रैव कुरुनन्दन। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-१५॥
mataṅgasya tu kedāras tatraiva kurunandana। tatra snātvā naro rājan gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-83-15॥
[मतङ्गस्य (mataṅgasya) - of Mataṅga; तु (tu) - but; केदारः (kedāraḥ) - field; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - just there; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kuru (Arjuna); तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit (result) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - would obtain;]
(Of Mataṅga but field just there O delight of the Kuru; there having bathed man O king, the fruit of a thousand cows would obtain.)
O king, the field of Mataṅga is just there, O Kurunandana. Bathing there, a man attains the merit equal to that of donating a thousand cows. (03-83-15)
श्रीपर्वतं समासाद्य नदीतीर उपस्पृशेत्। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८३-१६॥
śrīparvataṃ samāsādya nadītīra upaspṛśet। aśvamedham avāpnoti svargalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-83-16॥
[श्रीपर्वतम् (śrīparvatam) - the sacred mountain; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नदीतीर (nadītīra) - river bank; उपस्पृशेत् (upaspṛśet) - should touch (purify oneself by sprinkling water); अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the Aśvamedha sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - the heavenly world; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Having approached the sacred mountain, one should touch the river bank; one attains the Aśvamedha (sacrifice) and goes to the heavenly world.)
Approaching the sacred mountain and touching the river bank, one attains the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and goes to heaven. (03-83-16)
श्रीपर्वते महादेवो देव्या सह महाद्युतिः। न्यवसत्परमप्रीतो ब्रह्मा च त्रिदशैर्वृतः ॥०३-८३-१७॥
śrīparvate mahādevo devyā saha mahādyutiḥ। nyavasat paramaprīto brahmā ca tridaśairvṛtaḥ॥03-83-17॥
[श्रीपर्वते (śrīparvate) - on the auspicious mountain; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva (the great lord); देव्याः (devyāḥ) - with Devī (the goddess); सह (saha) - together; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great splendor; न्यवसत् (nyavasat) - he dwelt; परमप्रीतः (paramaprītaḥ) - supremely delighted; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; च (ca) - and; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - with the gods; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(On the auspicious mountain, Mahādeva of great splendor, together with Devī, dwelt, supremely delighted. And Brahmā, surrounded by the gods.)
Upon the auspicious mountain, the great lord Mahadeva, of immense radiance, resided with the goddess in supreme delight. Brahma also remained there, attended by the gods. (03-83-17)
तत्र देवह्रदे स्नात्वा शुचिः प्रयतमानसः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति परां सिद्धिं च गच्छति ॥०३-८३-१८॥
tatra devahrade snātvā śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti parāṃ siddhiṃ ca gacchati॥03-83-18॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; देवह्रदे (devahrade) - in the sacred lake of the gods; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; प्रयतमानसः (prayatamānasaḥ) - with concentrated mind; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the (fruit of) horse sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; पराम् (parām) - supreme; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - attains;]
(There, in the sacred lake of the gods, having bathed, pure, with concentrated mind, (one) obtains the (fruit of) horse sacrifice, supreme success and attains.)
There, having bathed in the sacred lake of the gods, one becomes pure and focused in mind; one obtains the fruit of the horse sacrifice and attains supreme success. (03-83-18)
ऋषभं पर्वतं गत्वा पाण्ड्येषु सुरपूजितम्। वाजपेयमवाप्नोति नाकपृष्ठे च मोदते ॥०३-८३-१९॥
ṛṣabhaṃ parvataṃ gatvā pāṇḍyeṣu surapūjitam। vājapeyam avāpnoti nākapṛṣṭhe ca modate॥03-83-19॥
[ऋषभं (ṛṣabham) - Ṛṣabha (name of the mountain); पर्वतं (parvatam) - mountain; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; पाण्ड्येषु (pāṇḍyeṣu) - in the territory of the Pāṇḍyas; सुरपूजितम् (surapūjitam) - worshipped by the gods; वाजपेयम् (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya (a sacrificial rite); अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; नाकपृष्ठे (nākapṛṣṭhe) - in the heaven; च (ca) - and; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(Having gone to the Ṛṣabha mountain, worshipped by gods, in the territory of the Pāṇḍyas, one attains the Vājapeya (sacrifice) and rejoices in heaven.)
By going to the Ṛṣabha mountain, venerated by the gods and located in the land of the Pāṇḍyas, one attains the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice and delights in heaven. (03-83-19)
ततो गच्छेत कावेरीं वृतामप्सरसां गणैः। तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-२०॥
tato gacchet kāverīṃ vṛtām apsarasāṃ gaṇaiḥ। tatra snātvā naro rājan go-sahasra-phalaṃ labhet॥03-83-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; कावेरीम् (kāverīm) - to Kāverī; वृताम् (vṛtām) - surrounded; अप्सरसां (apsarasām) - of celestial nymphs; गणैः (gaṇaiḥ) - by groups; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - after bathing; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; राजन् (rājan) - O King; गो-सहस्र-फलम् (go-sahasra-phalam) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - obtains;]
(Then should go to Kāverī surrounded by groups of celestial nymphs. There, after bathing, a man, O King, obtains the fruit of a thousand cows. (03-83-20))
Then one should go to the Kāverī, which is surrounded by groups of celestial nymphs. There, O King, after bathing, a man attains the merit equal to donating a thousand cows. (03-83-20)
ततस्तीरे समुद्रस्य कन्यातीर्थ उपस्पृशेत्। तत्रोपस्पृश्य राजेन्द्र सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८३-२१॥
tatastīre samudrasya kanyātīrtha upaspṛśet। tatropaspṛśya rājendra sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥03-83-21॥

यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः। भूतयक्षपिशाचाश्च किंनराः समहोरगाः ॥०३-८३-२३॥
yatra brahmādayo devā ṛṣayaś ca tapodhanāḥ। bhūtayakṣapiśācāś ca kiṃnarāḥ samahoragāḥ ॥03-83-23॥

(Where Brahmā and the other gods, sages, and ascetics rich in austerity, spirits, yakṣas and piśācas, and kinnaras together with great serpents (mahā-uragas), (are).)
Where Brahmā and other gods, sages, ascetics, spirits, yakṣas, piśācas, kinnaras, and great serpents all reside together. (03-83-23)
सिद्धचारणगन्धर्वा मानुषाः पन्नगास्तथा। सरितः सागराः शैला उपासन्त उमापतिम् ॥०३-८३-२४॥
siddhacāraṇagandharvā mānuṣāḥ pannagās tathā। saritaḥ sāgarāḥ śailā upāsanta umāpatim ॥03-83-24॥

Siddhas, cāraṇas, gandharvas, humans, serpents likewise, as well as rivers, oceans, and mountains were worshipping Umāpati (the husband of Umā). (03-83-24)
तत्रेशानं समभ्यर्च्य त्रिरात्रोपोषितो नरः। दशाश्वमेधमाप्नोति गाणपत्यं च विन्दति ॥ उष्य द्वादशरात्रं तु कृतात्मा भवते नरः ॥०३-८३-२५॥
tatreśānaṃ samabhyarcya trirātro-poṣito naraḥ। daśāśvamedham āpnoti gāṇapatyaṃ ca vindati॥ uṣya dvādaśa-rātraṃ tu kṛtātmā bhavate naraḥ॥03-83-25॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; ईशानं (īśānaṃ) - Īśāna (the Lord); समभ्यर्च्य (samabhyarcya) - having worshipped thoroughly; त्रिरात्रोपोषितः (trirātrapoṣitaḥ) - having fasted for three nights; नरः (naraḥ) - man; दश (daśa) - ten; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - Aśvamedha sacrifice; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; गाणपत्यं (gāṇapatyaṃ) - the status of lordship over Gaṇas; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - gains; उष्य (uṣya) - having dwelt; द्वादशरात्रम् (dvādaśa-rātram) - for twelve nights; तु (tu) - but; कृतात्मा (kṛtātmā) - self-controlled; भवते (bhavate) - becomes; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(There, having thoroughly worshipped Īśāna, the man having fasted for three nights obtains the fruit of ten Aśvamedha sacrifices and gains lordship over Gaṇas. Having dwelt for twelve nights, however, the man becomes self-controlled.)
There, by devoutly worshipping Īśāna and fasting for three nights, a man attains the merit of ten Aśvamedha sacrifices and obtains lordship among the Gaṇas. But if he remains for twelve nights, he becomes one with controlled self. (03-83-25)
तत एव तु गायत्र्याः स्थानं त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम्। त्रिरात्रमुषितस्तत्र गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-२६॥
tata eva tu gāyatryāḥ sthānaṃ trailokyaviśrutam। trirātram uṣitas tatra gosahasraphalaṃ labhet॥03-83-26॥
[तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; गायत्र्याः (gāyatryāḥ) - of Gāyatrī (mantra/goddess); स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; place; त्रैलोक्यविश्रुतम् (trailokyaviśrutam) - renowned through the three worlds; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - for three nights; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having stayed; तत्र (tatra) - there; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(That indeed but of Gāyatrī the place renowned through the three worlds; for three nights having stayed there, the merit of a thousand cows one obtains.)
That very place of Gāyatrī, renowned throughout the three worlds; whoever stays there for three nights obtains the merit of gifting a thousand cows. (03-83-26)
निदर्शनं च प्रत्यक्षं ब्राह्मणानां नराधिप। गायत्रीं पठते यस्तु योनिसङ्करजस्तथा ॥ गाथा वा गीतिका वापि तस्य सम्पद्यते नृप ॥०३-८३-२७॥
nidarśanaṁ ca pratyakṣaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ narādhipa। gāyatrīṁ paṭhate yastu yonisaṅkarajastathā ॥ gāthā vā gītikā vāpi tasya sampadyate nṛpa ॥03-83-27॥

(Example and direct proof of the Brāhmaṇas, O king. The one who recites the Gāyatrī, who is also born from mixed caste, or even a verse or song, to him it befalls, O king. (03-83-27))
O king, as an example and direct proof among Brāhmaṇas: whoever, though born of mixed caste, recites the Gāyatrī—be it even as a verse or a song—the consequence occurs to him, O king. (03-83-27)
संवर्तस्य तु विप्रर्षेर्वापीमासाद्य दुर्लभाम्। रूपस्य भागी भवति सुभगश्चैव जायते ॥०३-८३-२८॥
saṁvartasya tu viprarṣer vāpīm āsādya durlabhām। rūpasya bhāgī bhavati subhagaś caiva jāyate ॥03-83-28॥
[संवर्तस्य (saṁvartasya) - of Saṁvarta; तु (tu) - but; विप्रर्षेः (viprarṣeḥ) - of the sage-brāhmaṇa; वापीम् (vāpīm) - pond; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; दुर्लभाम् (durlabhām) - difficult to obtain; रूपस्य (rūpasya) - of beauty; भागी (bhāgī) - partaker; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; सुभगः (subhagaḥ) - fortunate; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जायते (jāyate) - is born;]
(Of Saṁvarta but of the sage-brāhmaṇa, pond having approached difficult to obtain, of beauty partaker becomes, fortunate and indeed is born.)
But having reached the pond of the sage Saṁvarta, which is difficult to obtain, one becomes a partaker of beauty and is indeed born fortunate. (03-83-28)
ततो वेण्णां समासाद्य तर्पयेत्पितृदेवताः। मयूरहंससंयुक्तं विमानं लभते नरः ॥०३-८३-२९॥
tato veṇṇāṃ samāsādya tarpayet pitṛdevatāḥ। mayūra-haṃsa-saṃyuktaṃ vimānaṃ labhate naraḥ॥03-83-29॥

(Then, having reached the Veṇṇā (river), one should satisfy the ancestral deities; a man obtains a celestial car joined to peacocks and swans.)
Then, having reached the Veṇṇā river and offering oblations to the ancestral deities, a man obtains a celestial vehicle adorned with peacocks and swans. (03-83-29)
ततो गोदावरीं प्राप्य नित्यं सिद्धनिषेविताम्। गवामयमवाप्नोति वासुकेर्लोकमाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८३-३०॥
tato godāvarīṃ prāpya nityaṃ siddhaniṣevitām। gavām ayam avāpnoti vāsuker lokam āpnuyāt॥03-83-30॥

(Then Godāvarī having reached, always attended by siddhas; of cows this (person) obtains, of Vāsuki the realm may attain.)
Then, having reached the Godāvarī—which is always attended by siddhas—this person obtains the world of cows and may attain the realm of Vāsuki. (03-83-30)
वेण्णायाः सङ्गमे स्नात्वा वाजपेयफलं लभेत्। वरदासङ्गमे स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-३१॥
veṇṇāyāḥ saṅgame snātvā vājapeya-phalaṃ labhet। varadā-saṅgame snātvā go-sahasra-phalaṃ labhet ॥03-83-31॥
[वेण्णायाः (veṇṇāyāḥ) - of Veṇṇā (river); सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; वाजपेयफलं (vājapeya-phalaṃ) - fruit/result of Vājapeya (sacrifice); लभेत् (labhet) - one attains; वरदा (varadā) - Varadā (river); सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - at the confluence; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (go-sahasra-phalaṃ) - fruit/result of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one attains;]
(Having bathed at the confluence of Veṇṇā, one attains the fruit of a Vājapeya (sacrifice). Having bathed at the confluence of Varadā, one attains the fruit of a thousand cows. (03-83-31))
Bathing at the confluence of the Veṇṇā grants the merit of a Vājapeya sacrifice; at the confluence of the Varadā, one gains the merit of gifting a thousand cows. (03-83-31)
ब्रह्मस्थानं समासाद्य त्रिरात्रमुषितो नरः। गोसहस्रफलं विन्देत्स्वर्गलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८३-३२॥
brahmasthānaṃ samāsādya trirātram uṣito naraḥ। gosahasraphalaṃ vindet svargalokaṃ ca gacchati ॥03-83-32॥
[ब्रह्मस्थानं (brahmasthānam) - the place of Brahman; (sacred) seat; place of the Absolute; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; having reached; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - for three nights; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having dwelt; having stayed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalam) - the fruit (result) of a thousand cows; विन्देत् (vindet) - attains; finds; स्वर्गलोकं (svargalokam) - the world of heaven; heavenly realm; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; reaches;]
(Having approached the Brahman-place and having dwelt for three nights, a man attains the fruit of a thousand cows and goes to the heavenly world.)
If a man approaches the Brahman-seat and stays there for three nights, he attains the merit equal to gifting a thousand cows and reaches heaven. (03-83-32)
कुशप्लवनमासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। त्रिरात्रमुषितः स्नात्वा अश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-३३॥
kuśaplavanam āsādya brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। trirātram uṣitaḥ snātvā aśvamedhaphalaṃ labhet॥03-83-33॥
[कुशप्लवनम् (kuśaplavanam) - kuśa-grass thicket; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate student; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - three nights; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having stayed; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; अश्वमेधफलं (aśvamedhaphalam) - the fruit of an aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice); लभेत् (labhet) - he obtains;]
(Having reached a kuśa-grass thicket, the concentrated brahmacārī, having stayed for three nights and having bathed, obtains the fruit of an aśvamedha (horse-sacrifice).)
If a brahmacārī, having reached a kuśa-grass thicket, stays there with concentration for three nights and then bathes, he obtains the merit of an aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-83-33)
ततो देवह्रदे रम्ये कृष्णवेण्णाजलोद्भवे। जातिमात्रह्रदे चैव तथा कन्याश्रमे नृप ॥०३-८३-३४॥
tato deva-hrade ramye kṛṣṇaveṇṇā-jalodbhave| jāti-mātra-hrade caiva tathā kanyāśrame nṛpa ॥03-83-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; देवह्रदे (deva-hrade) - in the sacred lake; रम्ये (ramye) - beautiful; कृष्णवेण्णा (kṛṣṇaveṇṇā) - Kṛṣṇaveṇṇā (name of a river); जलोत्भवे (jalodbhave) - originating from water; जातिमात्रह्रदे (jāti-mātra-hrade) - in the lake only for purification (of caste); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - likewise; कन्याश्रमे (kanyāśrame) - in Kanyāśrama (hermitage of maidens); नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(From there, in the beautiful sacred lake originating from the waters of Kṛṣṇaveṇṇā, and in the lake only for purification, and likewise in Kanyāśrama, O king.)
O king, from there (the pilgrimage continued) in the beautiful sacred lake that arises from the waters of the Kṛṣṇaveṇṇā, and in the special lake for caste purification, and likewise in Kanyāśrama. (03-83-34)
यत्र क्रतुशतैरिष्ट्वा देवराजो दिवं गतः। अग्निष्टोमशतं विन्देद्गमनादेव भारत ॥०३-८३-३५॥
yatra kratuśatairiṣṭvā devarājo divaṃ gataḥ। agniṣṭomaśataṃ vindedgamanādeva bhārata ॥03-83-35॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; क्रतुशतैः (kratuśataiḥ) - with hundreds of sacrifices; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having offered; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; अग्निष्टोमशतम् (agniṣṭomaśatam) - hundreds of Agniṣṭoma sacrifices; विन्देत् (vindet) - would find; गमनात् (gamanāt) - from going; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Where, having offered with hundreds of sacrifices, the king of the gods has gone to heaven; a person would find hundreds of Agniṣṭoma sacrifices indeed by merely going, O Bhārata.)
Where the king of the gods reached heaven by performing hundreds of sacrifices, simply going there is itself equivalent to attaining hundreds of Agniṣṭoma sacrifices, O Bhārata. (03-83-35)
सर्वदेवह्रदे स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्। जातिमात्रह्रदे स्नात्वा भवेज्जातिस्मरो नरः ॥०३-८३-३६॥
sarvadevahṛde snātvā gosahasraphalaṃ labhet। jātimātrahṛde snātvā bhavejjātismaro naraḥ ॥03-83-36॥
[सर्वदेवह्रदे (sarvadevahṛde) - in the pool of all the gods; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (gosahasraphalaṃ) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains; जातिमात्रह्रदे (jātimātrahṛde) - in the pool of birth alone; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; जातिस्मरः (jātismaraḥ) - one who remembers (his previous) birth; नरः (naraḥ) - a man;]
(In the pool of all the gods, having bathed, the fruit of a thousand cows, one obtains. In the pool of birth alone, having bathed, becomes one who remembers birth, a man.)
Whoever bathes in the pool of all the gods obtains the merit equivalent to giving a thousand cows. If a person bathes in the pool of birth, he becomes one who remembers his previous births. (03-83-36)
ततोऽवाप्य महापुण्यां पयोष्णीं सरितां वराम्। पितृदेवार्चनरतो गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-३७॥
tato'vāpya mahāpuṇyāṃ payoṣṇīṃ saritāṃ varām। pitṛdevārcanaratō gosahasraphalaṃ labhet॥03-83-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having attained; महापुण्यां (mahāpuṇyāṃ) - greatly virtuous; पयोष्णीं (payoṣṇīṃ) - Payoṣṇī (name of a river); सरितां (saritām) - of rivers; वराम् (varām) - the best; पितृदेव (pitṛdeva) - ancestral deities; अर्चन (arcana) - worship; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged in; गोसहस्र (gosahasra) - thousand cows; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(Then, having attained the greatly virtuous Payoṣṇī, the best of rivers, engaged in worship of the ancestral deities, one obtains the fruit of (giving) a thousand cows.)
After that, having reached the highly sacred river Payoṣṇī, which is the best of rivers, and engaging in the worship of ancestral deities, one attains the merit equivalent to giving a thousand cows. (03-83-37)
दण्डकारण्यमासाद्य महाराज उपस्पृशेत्। गोसहस्रफलं तत्र स्नातमात्रस्य भारत ॥०३-८३-३८॥
daṇḍakāraṇyam āsādya mahārāja upaspṛśet। go-sahasra-phalaṃ tatra snāta-mātrasya bhārata॥03-83-38॥
[दण्डकारण्यम् (daṇḍakāraṇyam) - Daṇḍaka forest; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; उपस्पृशेत् (upaspṛśet) - should touch (water, for purification); गोसहस्रफलं (go-sahasra-phalaṃ) - the fruit (merit) of a thousand cows; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नातमात्रस्य (snāta-mātrasya) - of one who has just bathed; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Having reached the Daṇḍaka forest, O great king, one should perform purification; there is the fruit of a thousand cows for one who has just bathed, O Bhārata.)
O great king, upon reaching the Daṇḍaka forest, one should purify oneself; there, O Bhārata, bathing even once yields the merit equivalent to gifting a thousand cows. (03-83-38)
शरभङ्गाश्रमं गत्वा शुकस्य च महात्मनः। न दुर्गतिमवाप्नोति पुनाति च कुलं नरः ॥०३-८३-३९॥
śarabhaṅgāśramaṁ gatvā śukasya ca mahātmanaḥ। na durgatim avāpnoti punāti ca kulaṁ naraḥ॥03-83-39॥
[शरभङ्गाश्रमम् (śarabhaṅgāśramam) - Śarabhaṅga’s hermitage; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; शुकस्य (śukasya) - of Śuka; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; न (na) - not; दुर्गतिम् (durgatim) - misfortune; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; च (ca) - and; कुलम् (kulam) - family; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Having gone to the hermitage of Śarabhaṅga and (that) of the great-souled Śuka, a man does not obtain misfortune and he purifies (his) family.)
A man who goes to the hermitage of Śarabhaṅga and the great-souled Śuka does not meet misfortune, and he also purifies his family. (03-83-39)
ततः शूर्पारकं गच्छेज्जामदग्न्यनिषेवितम्। रामतीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा विन्द्याद्बहु सुवर्णकम् ॥०३-८३-४०॥
tataḥ śūrparakaṃ gacchejjāmadagnyaniṣevitam। rāmatīrthe naraḥ snātvā vindyādbahu suvarṇakam ॥03-83-40॥

(Then to Śūrparaka should go, frequented by Jamadagnya (Paraśurāma). In Rāma-tīrtha, a man, having bathed, obtains much gold.)
Then, one should go to Śūrparaka, which was frequented by Jamadagnya (Paraśurāma). At Rāma-tīrtha, a man who bathes there obtains much gold. (03-83-40)
सप्तगोदावरे स्नात्वा नियतो नियताशनः। महत्पुण्यमवाप्नोति देवलोकं च गच्छति ॥०३-८३-४१॥
saptagodāvare snātvā niyato niyatāśanaḥ। mahatpuṇyam avāpnoti devalokaṁ ca gacchati॥03-83-41॥
[सप्तगोदावरे (saptagodāvare) - in the (river) Sapta-Godāvarī; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-restrained; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - of regulated food-habits; महत्पुण्यम् (mahatpuṇyam) - great merit; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; देवलोकम् (devalokam) - the world of the gods; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - he/she goes;]
(Having bathed in the Sapta-Godāvarī, one who is self-restrained and of regulated food-habits obtains great merit and goes to the world of the gods.)
By bathing in the Sapta-Godāvarī, a self-restrained person with regulated food-habits gains great merit and goes to the world of the gods. (03-83-41)
ततो देवपथं गच्छेन्नियतो नियताशनः। देवसत्रस्य यत्पुण्यं तदवाप्नोति मानवः ॥०३-८३-४२॥
tato devapathaṁ gacchenniyato niyatāśanaḥ। devasatrasya yatpuṇyaṁ tadavāpnoti mānavaḥ॥03-83-42॥

(Thereafter, one should go on the path of the gods, self-restrained, with regulated food. The merit which belongs to the divine sacrifice, that a man attains.)
Thereafter, a man who is self-restrained and eats regulated food should tread the path of the gods; he attains the merit belonging to the divine sacrifice. (03-83-42)
तुङ्गकारण्यमासाद्य ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः। वेदानध्यापयत्तत्र ऋषिः सारस्वतः पुरा ॥०३-८३-४३॥
tuṅgakāraṇyam āsādya brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ। vedān adhyāpayat tatra ṛṣiḥ sārasvataḥ purā ॥03-83-43॥

(Having reached the Tunga forest, the celibate who has conquered the senses, Sārasvata sage, formerly there taught the Vedas.)
Long ago, the sage Sārasvata, a brahmacārī with controlled senses, reached the Tunga forest and there taught the Vedas. (03-83-43)
तत्र वेदान्प्रनष्टांस्तु मुनेरङ्गिरसः सुतः। उपविष्टो महर्षीणामुत्तरीयेषु भारत ॥०३-८३-४४॥
tatra vedāṁpranaṣṭāṁstu muneraṅgirasaḥ sutaḥ। upaviṣṭo maharṣīṇāmuttarīyeṣu bhārata ॥03-83-44॥

(There the Vedas destroyed but sage Angiras's son seated of the great sages upon the upper garments, O Bhārata.)
There, O Bhārata, the son of sage Angiras, seated among the great sages upon their upper garments, restored the lost Vedas. (03-83-44)
ओङ्कारेण यथान्यायं सम्यगुच्चारितेन च। येन यत्पूर्वमभ्यस्तं तत्तस्य समुपस्थितम् ॥०३-८३-४५॥
oṅkāreṇa yathā-nyāyaṃ samyag-uccaritena ca। yena yat pūrvam abhyastaṃ tat tasya samupasthitam॥03-83-45॥
[ओङ्कारेण (oṅkāreṇa) - by oṅkāra (the syllable 'oṃ'); यथा न्यायं (yathā nyāyaṃ) - according to the proper rule; सम्यक्-उच्चारितेन (samyag-uccaritena) - correctly pronounced; च (ca) - and; येन (yena) - by whom; यत् (yat) - that which; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; अभ्यस्तं (abhyastaṃ) - practiced; तत् (tat) - that; तस्य (tasya) - to him; समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - becomes present;]
(By oṅkāra, according to the proper rule, and correctly pronounced, that which was previously practiced by whom, that becomes present to him.)
By the pronunciation of oṅkāra in the proper way and correctly, whatever someone has practiced before becomes manifest to him. (03-83-45)
ऋषयस्तत्र देवाश्च वरुणोऽग्निः प्रजापतिः। हरिर्नारायणो देवो महादेवस्तथैव च ॥०३-८३-४६॥
ṛṣayas tatra devāś ca varuṇo'gnīḥ prajāpatiḥ। harir nārāyaṇo devo mahādevas tathaiva ca॥03-83-46॥

(Seers there and gods; Varuṇa, Agni, Prajāpati, Hari, Nārāyaṇa, god, Mahādeva likewise and.)
There (were present) the seers, and the gods—Varuṇa, Agni, Prajāpati, Hari, Nārāyaṇa, the god Mahādeva, likewise also. (03-83-46)
पितामहश्च भगवान्देवैः सह महाद्युतिः। भृगुं नियोजयामास याजनार्थे महाद्युतिम् ॥०३-८३-४७॥
pitāmahaś ca bhagavān devaiḥ saha mahādyutiḥ। bhṛguṃ niyojayām āsa yājanārthe mahādyutim ॥03-83-47॥
[पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; देवैः (devaiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together with; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great splendor; भृगुं (bhṛguṃ) - Bhṛgu; नियोजयाम् (niyojayām) - appointed; आस (āsa) - did; याजनार्थे (yājanārthe) - for the purpose of sacrifice; महाद्युतिम् (mahādyutim) - the illustrious;]

ततः स चक्रे भगवानृषीणां विधिवत्तदा। सर्वेषां पुनराधानं विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥०३-८३-४८॥
tataḥ sa cakre bhagavān ṛṣīṇāṃ vidhivat tadā। sarveṣāṃ punar ādhānaṃ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā॥03-83-48॥

(Then he performed, the revered one, for the ṛṣis, according to rule at that time, for all, again, the re-consecration, as enjoined by rule, by action.)
Then, at that time, the revered one performed the re-consecration for all the ṛṣis according to the prescribed procedure.
आज्ञ्यभागेन वै तत्र तर्पितास्तु यथाविधि। देवास्त्रिभुवणं याता ऋषयश्च यथासुखम् ॥०३-८३-४९॥
ājñyabhāgena vai tatra tarpītāstu yathāvidhi । devāstribhuvaṇaṃ yātā ṛṣayaśca yathāsukham ॥03-83-49॥
[आज्ञ्यभागेन (ājñyabhāgena) - with the portion of clarified butter; वै (vai) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; तर्पिताः (tarpitāḥ) - satisfied; तु (tu) - but; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; त्रिभुवणं (tribhuvaṇam) - three worlds; याताः (yātāḥ) - went; ऋषयश्च (ṛṣayaś ca) - and the sages; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - as they pleased;]
(With the portion of clarified butter indeed there satisfied but according to the rule, the gods went to the three worlds and the sages as they pleased.)
Indeed, there, with their prescribed shares of clarified butter properly offered, the gods, being satisfied, went to their respective realms across the three worlds, and the sages departed as they pleased. (03-83-49)
तदरण्यं प्रविष्टस्य तुङ्गकं राजसत्तम। पापं प्रणश्यते सर्वं स्त्रियो वा पुरुषस्य वा ॥०३-८३-५०॥
tadaraṇyaṃ praviṣṭasya tuṅgakaṃ rājasattama। pāpaṃ praṇaśyate sarvaṃ striyo vā puruṣasya vā ॥03-83-50॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अरण्यम् (araṇyam) - forest; प्रविष्टस्य (praviṣṭasya) - of one who has entered; तुंगकम् (tuṅgakam) - Tuṅgaka (the place, proper noun); राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; प्रणश्यते (praṇaśyate) - is destroyed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; वा (vā) - or; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; वा (vā) - or;]
(O best of kings, all sin of a woman or of a man who has entered that Tuṅgaka forest is destroyed.)
O best of kings, all the sins of a woman or a man who enters that Tuṅgaka forest are destroyed. (03-83-50)
तत्र मासं वसेद्धीरो नियतो नियताशनः। ब्रह्मलोकं व्रजेद्राजन्पुनीते च कुलं नरः ॥०३-८३-५१॥
tatra māsaṁ vased dhīraḥ niyataḥ niyatāśanaḥ। brahmalokaṁ vrajed rājan punīte ca kulaṁ naraḥ॥03-83-51॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मासम् (māsam) - a month; वसेत् (vaset) - should dwell; धीरो (dhīraḥ) - steady-minded; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; नियताशनः (niyatāśanaḥ) - of regulated food; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - the world of Brahman; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should attain; राजन् (rājan) - O King; पुनीते (punīte) - purifies; च (ca) - and; कुलम् (kulam) - family; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(There a month should dwell the steady-minded, self-controlled, of regulated food. The world of Brahman should attain, O King, purifies and family man.)
There, a steady-minded, self-controlled man of regulated food should dwell for a month. O King, such a man attains the world of Brahman and also purifies his family. (03-83-51)
मेधाविकं समासाद्य पितॄन्देवांश्च तर्पयेत्। अग्निष्टोममवाप्नोति स्मृतिं मेधां च विन्दति ॥०३-८३-५२॥
medhāvikaṃ samāsādya pitṝn devāṃś ca tarpayet. agniṣṭomam avāpnoti smṛtiṃ medhāṃ ca vindati ॥03-83-52॥
[मेधाविकं (medhāvikam) - that which imparts intelligence; (sacrificial) offering for intellect; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having obtained; having accessed; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - forefathers; ancestors; देवान् (devān) - gods; deities; च (ca) - and; तर्पयेत् (tarpayet) - one should satisfy; should please; अग्निष्टोमम् (agniṣṭomam) - Agniṣṭoma sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - one attains; obtains; स्मृतिम् (smṛtim) - memory; मेधाम् (medhām) - intelligence; wisdom; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; finds;]
(Having obtained the medhāvika offering, one should satisfy the ancestors and the gods; one attains the Agniṣṭoma (sacrifice), (and) obtains memory and intelligence.)
By performing the medhāvika offering and thereby satisfying the ancestors and the gods, one attains the merit of an Agniṣṭoma sacrifice and acquires both memory and intelligence. (03-83-52)
ततः कालञ्जरं गत्वा पर्वतं लोकविश्रुतम्। तत्र देवह्रदे स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-५३॥
tataḥ kālañjaraṃ gatvā parvataṃ lokaviśrutam। tatra devahrade snātvā gosahasraphalaṃ labhet ॥03-83-53॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालञ्जरम् (kālañjaram) - Kālañjara (proper noun; name of a mountain); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; लोकविश्रुतम् (lokaviśrutam) - famous in the world; तत्र (tatra) - there; देवह्रदे (devahrade) - in the divine pond; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गो-सहस्र-फलम् (go-sahasra-phalam) - the fruit (result) of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - one obtains;]
(Then, having gone to Kālañjara, the mountain famous in the world, there, having bathed in the divine pond, one obtains the fruit of a thousand cows.)
Then, having gone to Kālañjara, the mountain renowned throughout the world, and having bathed there in the divine pond, one obtains the merit equivalent to gifting a thousand cows. (03-83-53)
आत्मानं साधयेत्तत्र गिरौ कालञ्जरे नृप। स्वर्गलोके महीयेत नरो नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥०३-८३-५४॥
ātmānaṃ sādhayet tatra girau kālañjare nṛpa। svargaloke mahīyeta naro nāsty atra saṃśayaḥ ॥03-83-54॥
[आत्मानं (ātmānam) - oneself; self; साधयेत् (sādhayet) - should accomplish; should perfect; तत्र (tatra) - there; गिरौ (girau) - on the mountain; कालञ्जरे (kālañjare) - Kalanjara (name of the mountain); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the world of heaven; महीयेत (mahīyeta) - would be honored; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(O king, there, on the Kalanjara mountain, one should accomplish oneself; in the world of heaven, the man would be honored. There is no doubt here.)
O king, there on Kalanjara mountain, a man who perfects himself will surely be honored in heaven; there is no doubt about this. (03-83-54)
ततो गिरिवरश्रेष्ठे चित्रकूटे विशां पते। मन्दाकिनीं समासाद्य नदीं पापप्रमोचनीम् ॥०३-८३-५५॥
tato girivaraśreṣṭhe citrakūṭe viśāṃ pate। mandākinīṃ samāsādya nadīṃ pāpapramocanīm ॥03-83-55॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गिरिवरश्रेष्ठे (girivaraśreṣṭhe) - on the best among the excellent mountains; चित्रकूटे (citrakūṭe) - at Citrakūṭa; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men; मन्दाकिनीं (mandākinīṃ) - the Mandakini; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नदीं (nadīṃ) - the river; पापप्रमोचनीम् (pāpapramocanīm) - remover of sins;]
(Then, on the best among the excellent mountains, at Citrakūṭa, O lord of men, having approached the Mandakini, the river remover of sins.)

तत्राभिषेकं कुर्वाणः पितृदेवार्चने रतः। अश्वमेधमवाप्नोति गतिं च परमां व्रजेत् ॥०३-८३-५६॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ kurvāṇaḥ pitṛdevārcane rataḥ। aśvamedham avāpnoti gatiṃ ca paramāṃ vrajet॥03-83-56॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषेकं (abhiṣekam) - anointing; consecration; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; पितृदेव (pitṛdeva) - ancestors and gods; अर्चने (arcane) - in worship; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; अश्वमेधम् (aśvamedham) - the Aśvamedha sacrifice; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; path; च (ca) - and; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - may attain;]
(There performing anointment, engaged in the worship of ancestors and gods, obtains the Aśvamedha, and may attain the supreme state.)
There, one who performs consecration and is devoted to the worship of ancestors and gods attains the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice and also reaches the highest state. (03-83-56)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र भर्तृस्थानमनुत्तमम्। यत्र देवो महासेनो नित्यं संनिहितो नृपः ॥०३-८३-५७॥
tato gacchet rājendra bhartṛsthānam anuttamam। yatra devo mahāseno nityaṃ saṃnihito nṛpaḥ ॥03-83-57॥

(From there should go, O king among kings, to the unsurpassed seat of the Lord; where the god Mahasena is always present, king.)
O king of kings, from there you should go to the unsurpassed seat of the Lord, where Lord Mahasena (Kartikeya) is always present, O king. (03-83-57)
पुमांस्तत्र नरश्रेष्ठ गमनादेव सिध्यति। कोटितीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत् ॥०३-८३-५८॥
pumāṁs tatra nara-śreṣṭha gamanād eva sidhyati। koṭi-tīrthe naraḥ snātvā go-sahasra-phalaṁ labhet ॥03-83-58॥
[पुमान् (pumān) - man; तत्र (tatra) - there; नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best among men; गमनात् (gamanāt) - from going; एव (eva) - only; सिध्यति (sidhyati) - is accomplished; कोटितीर्थे (koṭi-tīrthe) - at Koṭitīrtha; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; गोसहस्रफलं (go-sahasra-phalaṁ) - the fruit of a thousand cows; लभेत् (labhet) - may obtain;]
(Man there, O best among men, from going only is accomplished. At Koṭitīrtha, man having bathed may obtain the fruit of a thousand cows.)
O best among men, merely by going there, a man succeeds; and by bathing at Koṭitīrtha, a man may obtain the merit equal to that of giving a thousand cows. (03-83-58)
प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य ज्येष्ठस्थानं व्रजेन्नरः। अभिगम्य महादेवं विराजति यथा शशी ॥०३-८३-५९॥
pradakṣiṇam-upāvṛtya jyeṣṭha-sthānaṃ vrajen naraḥ। abhigamya mahādevaṃ virājati yathā śaśī ॥03-83-59॥
[प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; उपावृत्य (upāvṛtya) - having performed; ज्येष्ठस्थानम् (jyeṣṭha-sthānam) - the chief place; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; महादेवम् (mahādevam) - Mahadeva; विराजति (virājati) - shines; यथा (yathā) - as; शशी (śaśī) - the moon;]
(Having performed circumambulation, the man should go to the chief place; having approached Mahadeva, he shines as the moon.)
Having completed the circumambulation, a man should proceed to the chief seat; having approached Mahadeva, he shines like the moon. (03-83-59)
तत्र कूपो महाराज विश्रुतो भरतर्षभ। समुद्रास्तत्र चत्वारो निवसन्ति युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-८३-६०॥

(There a well, O great king, famous, O bull among the Bharatas. Oceans there four reside, O Yudhishthira.)

तत्रोपस्पृश्य राजेन्द्र कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्। नियतात्मा नरः पूतो गच्छेत परमां गतिम् ॥०३-८३-६१॥

(There having touched (with water), O king of kings, having also made circumambulation, the self-controlled man, purified, would go to the supreme destination.)
There, after performing ritual touching (purification) and circumambulation, the self-controlled man, made pure, attains the highest goal, O king. (03-83-61)
ततो गच्छेत्कुरुश्रेष्ठ शृङ्गवेरपुरं महत्। यत्र तीर्णो महाराज रामो दाशरथिः पुरा ॥०३-८३-६२॥
tato gacchet kuruśreṣṭha śṛṅgaverapuraṃ mahat। yatra tīrṇo mahārāja rāmo dāśarathiḥ purā ॥03-83-62॥

(Then should go, O best of the Kurus, to Śṛṅgaverapura, great; where had crossed, great king Rāma, descendant of Daśaratha, formerly.)
Then, O best of the Kurus, you should go to the great city Śṛṅgaverapura, where, in former times, the great king Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, crossed. (03-83-62)
गङ्गायां तु नरः स्नात्वा ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः। विधूतपाप्मा भवति वाजपेयं च विन्दति ॥०३-८३-६३॥
gaṅgāyāṃ tu naraḥ snātvā brahmacārī samāhitaḥ। vidhūtapāpmā bhavati vājapeyaṃ ca vindati॥03-83-63॥
[गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Gaṅgā; तु (tu) - but; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate student; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected; विधूतपाप्मा (vidhūtapāpmā) - one whose sin is shaken off; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वाजपेयं (vājapeyam) - Vājapeya sacrifice; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains;]
(In the Gaṅgā but man having bathed, a celibate student, collected, one whose sin is shaken off becomes, and the Vājapeya (sacrifice) obtains.)
But when a man, a disciplined celibate, bathes in the Gaṅgā, he becomes free from sin and obtains the merit of a Vājapeya sacrifice. (03-83-63)
अभिगम्य महादेवमभ्यर्च्य च नराधिप। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य गाणपत्यमवाप्नुयात् ॥०३-८३-६४॥
abhigamya mahādevam abhyarcya ca narādhipa। pradakṣiṇam upāvṛtya gāṇapatyam avāpnuyāt॥03-83-64॥

O king, having approached and worshipped Mahādeva, and having circumambulated him, one attains the lordship of the Gaṇas. (03-83-64)
ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र प्रयागमृषिसंस्तुतम्। यत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवा दिशश्च सदिगीश्वराः ॥०३-८३-६५॥
tato gacchet rājendra prayāgam ṛṣi-saṃstutam। yatra brahmādayo devā diśaś ca sa-dig-īśvarāḥ॥03-83-65॥

(Then, one should go, O king, to Prayāga praised by sages, where Brahmā and other gods and the directions with the lords of directions (are present).)
After that, O king, one should proceed to Prayāga, which is praised by sages, where Brahmā, the other gods, and the directions together with their presiding deities are present. (03-83-65)
लोकपालाश्च साध्याश्च नैरृताः पितरस्तथा। सनत्कुमारप्रमुखास्तथैव परमर्षयः ॥०३-८३-६६॥
lokapālāś ca sādhyāś ca nairṛtāḥ pitaras tathā। sanatkumāra-pramukhās tathaiva paramarṣayaḥ ॥03-83-66॥

सरितः सागराश्चैव गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा। हरिश्च भगवानास्ते प्रजापतिपुरस्कृतः ॥०३-८३-६८॥
saritaḥ sāgarāścaiva gandharvāpsarasastathā. hariśca bhagavānāste prajāpati-puraskṛtaḥ ॥03-83-68॥

तत्र त्रीण्यग्निकुण्डानि येषां मध्ये च जाह्नवी। प्रयागादभिनिष्क्रान्ता सर्वतीर्थपुरस्कृता ॥०३-८३-६९॥
tatra trīṇy agnikuṇḍāni yeṣāṃ madhye ca jāhnavī। prayāgād abhiniṣkrāntā sarvatīrthapuraskṛtā॥03-83-69॥

prayāgaṃ sapratiṣṭhānaṃ kambalāśvatarau tathā. tīrthaṃ bhogavatī caiva vedī proktā prajāpateḥ ॥03-83-72॥

तत्र वेदाश्च यज्ञाश्च मूर्तिमन्तो युधिष्ठिर। प्रजापतिमुपासन्ते ऋषयश्च महाव्रताः ॥ यजन्ते क्रतुभिर्देवास्तथा चक्रचरा नृप ॥०३-८३-७३॥
tatra vedāś ca yajñāś ca mūrtimanto yudhiṣṭhira। prajāpatiṃ upāsante ṛṣayaś ca mahāvratāḥ॥ yajante kratubhir devās tathā cakracarā nṛpa॥03-83-73॥

(There the Vedas and sacrifices, incarnate, O Yudhiṣṭhira, worship Prajāpati; the sages of great vows also (do so). The gods perform sacrifices with rites; likewise the circular movers, O king.)
There, O Yudhiṣṭhira, the Vedas and sacrifices, embodied, worship Prajāpati; the great sages do likewise. The gods perform sacrifices with sacred rites, and so also do the heavenly bodies, O king. (03-83-73)
ततः पुण्यतमं नास्ति त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत। प्रयागः सर्वतीर्थेभ्यः प्रभवत्यधिकं विभो ॥०३-८३-७४॥
tataḥ puṇyatamaṃ nāsti triṣu lokeṣu bhārata। prayāgaḥ sarvatīrthebhyaḥ prabhavatyadhikaṃ vibho ॥03-83-74॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from that; then; पुण्यतमं (puṇyatamam) - most holy; most auspicious; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रयागः (prayāgaḥ) - Prayāga; सर्वतीर्थेभ्यः (sarvatīrthebhyaḥ) - than all sacred places; प्रभवति (prabhavati) - excels; prevails; अधिकं (adhikam) - more; greater; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Then, the most holy does not exist in the three worlds, O Bhārata. Prayāga excels more than all sacred places, O mighty one.)
Therefore, there is nothing more holy in the three worlds, O Bhārata. Prayāga surpasses all other sacred places, O mighty one. (03-83-74)
श्रवणात्तस्य तीर्थस्य नामसङ्कीर्तनादपि। मृत्तिकालम्भनाद्वापि नरः पापात्प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८३-७५॥
śravaṇāttasya tīrthasya nāmasaṅkīrtanādapi। mṛttikālambhanādvāpi naraḥ pāpātpramucyate ॥03-83-75॥
[श्रवणात् (śravaṇāt) - from hearing; तस्य (tasya) - of that; तीर्थस्य (tīrthasya) - of the sacred place; नामसङ्कीर्तनात् (nāmasaṅkīrtanāt) - from chanting the name; अपि (api) - even; मृत्तिकालम्भनात् (mṛttikālambhanāt) - from taking the earth; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; नरः (naraḥ) - the man; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(From hearing of that sacred place, even from chanting the name, or even from taking the earth, the man is released from sin.)
A man is freed from sin simply by hearing about that sacred place, by reciting its name, or even by taking its earth. (03-83-75)
तत्राभिषेकं यः कुर्यात्सङ्गमे संशितव्रतः। पुण्यं स फलमाप्नोति राजसूयाश्वमेधयोः ॥०३-८३-७६॥
tatrābhiṣekaṃ yaḥ kuryāt saṅgame saṃśitavrataḥ। puṇyaṃ sa phalam āpnoti rājasūyāśvamedhayoḥ॥03-83-76॥

(There ablution who may perform at the confluence, firm in vow. The merit he result obtains of Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (horse sacrifices).)
Whoever, firm in vow, performs an ablution at that confluence, obtains the merit resulting from both the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices. (03-83-76)
एषा यजनभूमिर्हि देवानामपि सत्कृता। तत्र दत्तं सूक्ष्ममपि महद्भवति भारत ॥०३-८३-७७॥
eṣā yajana-bhūmir hi devānām api satkṛtā. tatra dattaṃ sūkṣmam api mahat bhavati bhārata ॥03-83-77॥

O Bhārata, this place of sacrifice, even honored by the gods, makes even the smallest offering given here become great. (03-83-77)
न वेदवचनात्तात न लोकवचनादपि। मतिरुत्क्रमणीया ते प्रयागमरणं प्रति ॥०३-८३-७८॥
na vedavacanāttāta na lokavacanādapi। matirutkramaṇīyā te prayāgamaraṇaṃ prati ॥03-83-78॥

दश तीर्थसहस्राणि षष्टिकोट्त्यस्तथापराः। येषां सांनिध्यमत्रैव कीर्तितं कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-८३-७९॥
daśa tīrthasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭikoṭtyastathāparāḥ। yeṣāṃ sānnidhyamatraiva kīrtitaṃ kurunandana॥03-83-79॥

cāturvede ca yat puṇyaṃ satyavādiṣu caiva yat। snāta eva tad āpnoti gaṅgā-yamuna-saṅgame ॥03-83-80॥

There is a renowned holy place of Vāsuki called Bhogavatī. Whoever performs an ablution there attains the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice. (03-83-81)

यत्र गङ्गा महाराज स देशस्तत्तपोवनम्। सिद्धक्षेत्रं तु तज्ज्ञेयं गङ्गातीरसमाश्रितम् ॥०३-८३-८३॥
yatra gaṅgā mahārāja sa deśas tat tapovanam। siddhakṣetraṃ tu taj jñeyaṃ gaṅgātīrasamāśritam॥03-83-83॥

(Where Gaṅgā, O great king, that place is indeed the forest of austerities. That is to be known as a special holy place, situated near the bank of the Gaṅgā.)

इदं सत्यं द्विजातीनां साधूनामात्मजस्य च। सुहृदां च जपेत्कर्णे शिष्यस्यानुगतस्य च ॥०३-८३-८४॥
idaṃ satyaṃ dvijātīnām sādhūnām ātmajasya ca। suhṛdāṃ ca japet karṇe śiṣyasya anugatasya ca॥03-83-84॥

maharṣīṇām idaṃ guhyaṃ sarvapāpapramocanam। adhītya dvijamadhye ca nirmalatvam avāpnuyāt ॥03-83-86॥
[महर्षीणाम् (maharṣīṇām) - of great seers; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - secret; सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् (sarvapāpapramocanam) - liberating from all sins; अधीत्य (adhītya) - having studied; द्विजमध्ये (dvijamadhye) - among the twice-born; च (ca) - and; निर्मलत्वम् (nirmalatvam) - purity; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - one should attain;]
(Of great seers this secret, liberating from all sins; having studied, among the twice-born and, purity one should attain.)
This secret of the great seers, which grants liberation from all sins—he who studies it among the twice-born attains purity. (03-83-86)
यश्चेदं शृणुयान्नित्यं तीर्थपुण्यं सदा शुचिः। जातीः स स्मरते बह्वीर्नाकपृष्ठे च मोदते ॥०३-८३-८७॥
yaś cedaṁ śṛṇuyān nityaṁ tīrthapuṇyaṁ sadā śuciḥ। jātīḥ sa smarate bahvīḥ nākapṛṣṭhe ca modate ॥03-83-87॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṁ) - this; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - may hear; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; तीर्थपुण्यं (tīrthapuṇyaṁ) - the sacred merit of pilgrimage; सदा (sadā) - always; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; जातीः (jātīḥ) - births; स (sa) - he; स्मरते (smarate) - remembers; बह्वीः (bahvīḥ) - many; नाकपृष्ठे (nākapṛṣṭhe) - on the summit of heaven; च (ca) - and; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(Who and this may hear always, the sacred merit of pilgrimage, always pure; births he remembers many, on the summit of heaven and rejoices.)
Whoever always hears this account of the merit of holy places while remaining ever pure, he remembers many births and rejoices on the summit of heaven. (03-83-87)
गम्यान्यपि च तीर्थानि कीर्तितान्यगमानि च। मनसा तानि गच्छेत सर्वतीर्थसमीक्षया ॥०३-८३-८८॥
gamyāny api ca tīrthāni kīrtitāny agamāni ca. manasā tāni gacchet sarvatīrthasamīkṣayā ॥03-83-88॥
[गम्यानि (gamyāni) - those to be approached; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; कीर्तितानि (kīrtitāni) - praised; अगमानि (agamāni) - not gone (to); च (ca) - and; मनसा (manasā) - by the mind; तानि (tāni) - those; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - one should go; सर्वतीर्थसमीक्षया (sarvatīrthasamīkṣayā) - by considering all holy places;]
(Those to be approached also and holy places praised not gone (to) and by the mind those one should go by considering all holy places.)
One should, by the mind, visit those praised holy places, whether accessible or not, considering all holy sites. (03-83-88)
एतानि वसुभिः साध्यैरादित्यैर्मरुदश्विभिः। ऋषिभिर्देवकल्पैश्च श्रितानि सुकृतैषिभिः ॥०३-८३-८९॥
etāni vasubhiḥ sādhyair ādityair marudaśvibhiḥ। ṛṣibhir devakalpaiś ca śritāni sukṛtaiṣibhiḥ ॥03-83-89॥
[एतानि (etāni) - these; वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - by Vasus; साध्यैः (sādhyaiḥ) - by Sādhyas; आदित्यैः (ādityaiḥ) - by Ādityas; मरुदश्विभिः (marudaśvibhiḥ) - by Maruts and Aśvins; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by Ṛṣis; देवकल्पैः (devakalpaiḥ) - who are like the gods; च (ca) - and; श्रितानि (śritāni) - resorted to; सुकृतैः (sukṛtaiḥ) - by the virtuous; एषिभिः (eṣibhiḥ) - by seekers;]
(These by Vasus, by Sādhyas, by Ādityas, by Maruts and Aśvins, by Ṛṣis who are like the gods, and resorted to by the virtuous seekers.)
These places have been sought after by the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Ādityas, the Maruts and Aśvins, the Ṛṣis who are like the gods, and by the virtuous seekers. (03-83-89)
एवं त्वमपि कौरव्य विधिनानेन सुव्रत। व्रज तीर्थानि नियतः पुण्यं पुण्येन वर्धते ॥०३-८३-९०॥
evaṁ tvam api kauravya vidhinānena suvrata। vraja tīrthāni niyataḥ puṇyaṁ puṇyena vardhate॥03-83-90॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the method; एन (anena) - this; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O virtuous one; व्रज (vraja) - go; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; नियतः (niyataḥ) - with self-control; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by merit; वर्धते (vardhate) - increases;]
(Thus you also, O Kauravya, by this method, O virtuous one, go to the holy places with self-control; merit increases by merit.)
Therefore, O Kauravya, you too should, with discipline and by this method, O suvrata, visit the holy places; merit increases through merit. (03-83-90)
भावितैः कारणैः पूर्वमास्तिक्याच्छ्रुतिदर्शनात्। प्राप्यन्ते तानि तीर्थानि सद्भिः शिष्टानुदर्शिभिः ॥०३-८३-९१॥
bhāvitaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ pūrvam āstikyāt śruti-darśanāt। prāpyante tāni tīrthāni sadbhiḥ śiṣṭānudarśibhiḥ ॥03-83-91॥
[भावितैः (bhāvitaiḥ) - formed by; established; accomplished; कारणैः (kāraṇaiḥ) - by causes; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; formerly; आस्तिक्यात् (āstikyāt) - from faith; from belief; श्रुति-दर्शनात् (śruti-darśanāt) - from the perception of the Veda; from instruction and vision; प्राप्यन्ते (prāpyante) - are attained; तानि (tāni) - those; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; crossings; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the good; by the virtuous; शिष्ट (śiṣṭa) - the disciplined; those of good conduct; अनुदर्शिभिः (anudarśibhiḥ) - by those emulating; by those following example;]
(By accomplished causes previously, from faith and perception of the Veda, those holy places are attained by the good, by those of proper conduct emulating (others).)
Previously, through established causes—namely faith and the perception of the Veda—those holy places are attained by the virtuous, by those of good conduct who follow the example of others. (03-83-91)
नाव्रतो नाकृतात्मा च नाशुचिर्न च तस्करः। स्नाति तीर्थेषु कौरव्य न च वक्रमतिर्नरः ॥०३-८३-९२॥
nāvrato nākṛtātmā ca nāśucirna ca taskaraḥ। snāti tīrtheṣu kauravya na ca vakramatirnaraḥ ॥03-83-92॥
[न (na) - not; अव्रतः (avrataḥ) - who is without observance of vows; न (na) - not; अकृतात्मा (akṛtātmā) - who has not subdued himself; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अशुचिः (aśuciḥ) - impure; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तस्करः (taskaraḥ) - a thief; स्नाति (snāti) - bathes; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - at sacred waters; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kaurava; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वक्रमतिः (vakramatiḥ) - crooked-minded; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Not he who is without vow, not he who has not subdued himself, and not the impure, not a thief; bathes at sacred waters, O Kaurava, and not a crooked-minded man.)
O Kaurava, a man who is without vows, without self-discipline, impure, a thief, or has a crooked mind does not truly bathe at sacred waters. (03-83-92)
त्वया तु सम्यग्वृत्तेन नित्यं धर्मार्थदर्शिना। पितरस्तारितास्तात सर्वे च प्रपितामहाः ॥०३-८३-९३॥
tvayā tu samyagvṛttena nityaṁ dharmārthadarśinā। pitarastāritāstāta sarve ca prapitāmahāḥ ॥03-83-93॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तु (tu) - but; सम्यग्वृत्तेन (samyag-vṛttena) - one of right conduct; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; धर्मार्थदर्शिना (dharmārtha-darśinā) - who perceives righteousness and purpose; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - the fathers; तारिताः (tāritāḥ) - are helped across; तात (tāta) - O dear one; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; प्रपितामहाः (prapitāmahāḥ) - forefathers;]
(By you but, who is always of right conduct and perceives righteousness and purpose, the fathers are helped across, O dear one; all and forefathers.)
But by you, O dear one, ever of right conduct and with insight into righteousness and purpose, all the fathers and forefathers have been helped across. (03-83-93)
पितामहपुरोगाश्च देवाः सर्षिगणा नृप। तव धर्मेण धर्मज्ञ नित्यमेवाभितोषिताः ॥०३-८३-९४॥
pitāmahapurogāś ca devāḥ saṛṣigaṇā nṛpa। tava dharmeṇa dharmajña nityam evābhitoṣitāḥ ॥03-83-94॥
[पितामहपुरोगाः (pitāmahapurogāḥ) - with the grandsire at their head; च (ca) - and; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सर्षिगणाः (saṛṣigaṇāḥ) - with groups of sages; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; तव (tava) - by your; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; अभितोषिताः (abhitoṣitāḥ) - are highly pleased;]
(With the grandsire at their head and gods with groups of sages, O king, by your righteousness, O knower of dharma, always indeed are highly pleased.)
O king, the gods headed by the grandsire and accompanied by groups of sages are always indeed highly pleased with your righteousness, O knower of dharma. (03-83-94)
अवाप्स्यसि च लोकान्वै वसूनां वासवोपम। कीर्तिं च महतीं भीष्म प्राप्स्यसे भुवि शाश्वतीम् ॥०३-८३-९५॥
avāpsyasi ca lokān vai vasūnāṃ vāsavopama। kīrtiṃ ca mahatīṃ bhīṣma prāpsyase bhuvi śāśvatīm ॥03-83-95॥
[अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain; च (ca) - and; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; वै (vai) - indeed; वसूनाम् (vasūnām) - of the Vasus; वासवोपम (vāsavopama) - like Indra; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - fame; च (ca) - and; महतीं (mahatīm) - great; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhīṣma; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will obtain; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal;]
(You will attain, and worlds indeed, of the Vasus like Indra; fame and great, Bhīṣma, you will obtain on earth eternal.)
You will surely attain the worlds of the Vasus like Indra; and Bhīṣma, you will obtain great and eternal fame on earth. (03-83-95)

evam-uktvā abhyanujñāpya pulastyaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ। prītaḥ prītena manasā tatra eva antaradhīyata ॥03-83-96॥

(Thus, having spoken, having permitted, Pulastya the exalted sage, pleased with a pleased mind, there alone disappeared.)
Thus having spoken and given permission, Pulastya, the exalted sage, pleased at heart, disappeared right there. (03-83-96)
भीष्मश्च कुरुशार्दूल शास्त्रतत्त्वार्थदर्शिवान्। पुलस्त्यवचनाच्चैव पृथिवीमनुचक्रमे ॥०३-८३-९७॥
bhīṣmaś ca kuruśārdūla śāstratattvārthadarśivān। pulastyavacanāc caiva pṛthivīm anucakrame ॥03-83-97॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; च (ca) - and; कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O tiger among Kurus; शास्त्रतत्त्वार्थदर्शिवान् (śāstratattvārthadarśivān) - one who saw the true meaning of śāstra; पुलस्त्यवचनात् (pulastyavacanāt) - from Pulastya's words; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; अनुचक्रमे (anucakrame) - traversed;]
(Bhīṣma and, O tiger among Kurus, the one who saw the true meaning of śāstra, from Pulastya's words indeed, the earth traversed.)
And Bhīṣma, O best of the Kurus, who understood the true meaning of the scriptures, traversed the earth as spoken by Pulastya. (03-83-97)
अनेन विधिना यस्तु पृथिवीं सञ्चरिष्यति। अश्वमेधशतस्याग्र्यं फलं प्रेत्य स भोक्ष्यते ॥०३-८३-९८॥
anena vidhinā yastu pṛthivīṃ sañcariṣyati। aśvamedhaśatasyāgryaṃ phalaṃ pretya sa bhokṣyate ॥03-83-98॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; विधिना (vidhinā) - method; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth; सञ्चरिष्यति (sañcariṣyati) - will go about; अश्वमेधशतस्य (aśvamedhaśatasya) - of a hundred Ashvamedha sacrifices; आग्र्यं (āgryaṃ) - excellent; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed (after death); स (sa) - he; भोक्ष्यते (bhokṣyate) - will enjoy;]
(By this method, who indeed the earth will travel, the excellent fruit of a hundred Ashvamedha sacrifices, after departing, he will enjoy.)
Whoever travels the earth by this method will enjoy, after death, the excellent fruit equal to a hundred Ashvamedha sacrifices. (03-83-98)
अतश्चाष्टगुणं पार्थ प्राप्स्यसे धर्ममुत्तमम्। नेता च त्वमृषीन्यस्मात्तेन तेऽष्टगुणं फलम् ॥०३-८३-९९॥
ataś cāṣṭaguṇaṃ pārtha prāpsyase dharmam uttamam। netā ca tvam ṛṣīn asmāt tena te'ṣṭaguṇaṃ phalam ॥03-83-99॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - from this; च (ca) - and; अष्टगुणं (aṣṭaguṇam) - eightfold; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will obtain; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; नेता (netā) - leader; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; तेन (tena) - by this; ते (te) - for you; अष्टगुणं (aṣṭaguṇam) - eightfold; फलम् (phalam) - result;]
(From this, and eightfold, O Pārtha, you will obtain supreme dharma; and leader you (will be) of sages from this; by this for you, eightfold result.)
From this, O Pārtha, you will attain eightfold supreme dharma; and you will become the leader of sages from this, thus for you there will be an eightfold result. (03-83-99)
रक्षोगणावकीर्णानि तीर्थान्येतानि भारत। न गतिर्विद्यतेऽन्यस्य त्वामृते कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-८३-१००॥
rakṣogaṇāvakīrṇāni tīrthānyetāni bhārata। na gatir vidyate'nyasya tvāmṛte kurunandana॥03-83-100॥
[रक्षोगणावकीर्णानि (rakṣogaṇāvakīrṇāni) - covered by groups of rākṣasas; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; एतानि (etāni) - these; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; गतिः (gatiḥ) - way; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; अन्यस्य (anyasya) - for another; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ऋते (ṛte) - except; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(Covered by groups of rākṣasas, these holy places, O Bhārata; not way exists for another except you, O joy of the Kurus.)
O Bhārata, these holy places are covered by groups of rākṣasas; O joy of the Kurus, there is no way for anyone except you.
इदं देवर्षिचरितं सर्वतीर्थार्थसंश्रितम्। यः पठेत्कल्यमुत्थाय सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥०३-८३-१०१॥
idaṃ devarṣicaritaṃ sarvatīrthārthasaṃśritam। yaḥ paṭhet kalyam utthāya sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate॥03-83-101॥

(These excellent sages, all ascetics, are waiting for you. With these together, O great king, sacred places, these, follow.)
All these excellent sages, endowed with ascetic wealth, are waiting for you. O great king, go along with them to these sacred places. (03-83-105)
एष वै लोमशो नाम देवर्षिरमितद्युतिः। समेष्यति त्वया चैव तेन सार्धमनुव्रज ॥०३-८३-१०६॥
eṣa vai lomaśo nāma devarṣir amitadyutiḥ। sameṣyati tvayā caiva tena sārdham anuvraja ॥03-83-106॥

This is the divine sage named Lomaśa, of infinite brightness. He will come to you; follow him together.
मया च सह धर्मज्ञ तीर्थान्येतान्यनुव्रज। प्राप्स्यसे महतीं कीर्तिं यथा राजा महाभिषः ॥०३-८३-१०७॥
mayā ca saha dharmajña tīrthāny etāny anuvraja। prāpsyase mahatīṃ kīrtiṃ yathā rājā mahābhiṣaḥ॥03-83-107॥

यथा ययातिर्धर्मात्मा यथा राजा पुरूरवाः। तथा त्वं कुरुशार्दूल स्वेन धर्मेण शोभसे ॥०३-८३-१०८॥
yathā yayātirdharmātmā yathā rājā purūravāḥ। tathā tvaṃ kuruśārdūla svena dharmeṇa śobhase ॥03-83-108॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous by nature; यथा (yathā) - just as; राजा (rājā) - king; पुरूरवाः (purūravāḥ) - Pururavas; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O best of the Kurus; स्वेन (svena) - by your own; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; शोभसे (śobhase) - you shine;]
(Just as Yayati, righteous by nature; just as king Pururavas; in the same way, you, O best of the Kurus, by your own righteousness, you shine.)
Just as Yayati, who was by nature righteous, and just as King Pururavas, in the same way, O best of the Kurus, you also shine by your own righteousness. (03-83-108)
यथा भगीरथो राजा यथा रामश्च विश्रुतः। तथा त्वं सर्वराजभ्यो भ्राजसे रश्मिवानिव ॥०३-८३-१०९॥
yathā bhagīratho rājā yathā rāmaś ca viśrutaḥ। tathā tvaṃ sarva-rājabhyo bhrājase raśmivān iva॥03-83-109॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; भगीरथः (bhagīrathaḥ) - Bhagīratha; राजा (rājā) - king; यथा (yathā) - just as; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; च (ca) - and; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - renowned; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; सर्वराजभ्यः (sarva-rājabhyaḥ) - among all kings; भ्राजसे (bhrājase) - you shine; रश्मिवान् (raśmivān) - like the radiant one (sun); इव (iva) - like;]
(Just as Bhagīratha king, just as Rāma was renowned, in the same way you among all kings shine like the radiant one (sun).)
Just as King Bhagīratha and Rāma were famous, so too, you shine among all kings like the radiant sun. (03-83-109)
यथा मनुर्यथेक्ष्वाकुर्यथा पूरुर्महायशाः। यथा वैन्यो महातेजास्तथा त्वमपि विश्रुतः ॥०३-८३-११०॥
yathā manur yathaiṣvākur yathā pūrur mahāyaśāḥ। yathā vainyo mahātejās tathā tvam api viśrutaḥ॥03-83-110॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; यथा (yathā) - just as; इक्ष्वाकुः (ikṣvākuḥ) - Ikṣvāku; यथा (yathā) - just as; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; यथा (yathā) - just as; वैन्यः (vainyaḥ) - the son of Vena; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great energy; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - renowned;]
(Just as Manu, just as Ikṣvāku, just as Pūru greatly renowned, just as Vainya of great energy, so you also (are) renowned.)
Just as Manu, Ikṣvāku, Pūru the greatly renowned, and Vainya the one of great energy—so too are you renowned. (03-83-110)
यथा च वृत्रहा सर्वान्सपत्नान्निर्दहत्पुरा। तथा शत्रुक्षयं कृत्वा प्रजास्त्वं पालयिष्यसि ॥०३-८३-१११॥
yathā ca vṛtrahā sarvān sapatnān nirdahat purā। tathā śatru-kṣayam kṛtvā prajāḥ tvaṃ pālayiṣyasi॥03-83-111॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; वृत्रहा (vṛtrahā) - Vṛtra-slayer (epithet of Indra); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सपत्नान् (sapatnān) - rivals; निर्दहत् (nirdahat) - burning up; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तथा (tathā) - so; शत्रुक्षयम् (śatru-kṣayam) - destruction of enemies; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; पालयिष्यसि (pālayiṣyasi) - will protect;]
(Just as also Vṛtra-slayer all rivals burning up formerly, so destruction of enemies having done, subjects you will protect.)
Just as Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, formerly burned up all his rivals, so, having destroyed your enemies, you will protect your subjects. (03-83-111)
स्वधर्मविजितामुर्वीं प्राप्य राजीवलोचन। ख्यातिं यास्यसि धर्मेण कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो यथा ॥०३-८३-११२॥
svadharma-vijitām urvīṃ prāpya rājīva-locana। khyātiṃ yāsyasi dharmeṇa kārtavīryārjuno yathā ॥03-83-112॥
[स्वधर्मविजिताम् (svadharma-vijitām) - conquered by one's own dharma; उर्वीं (urvīṃ) - the earth; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; राजीवलोचन (rājīva-locana) - O lotus-eyed one; ख्यातिं (khyātiṃ) - fame; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - you will go (attain); धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by (means of) righteousness; कार्तवीर्यार्जुनः (kārtavīryārjunaḥ) - Kārtavīrya Arjuna; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Having obtained the earth conquered by one's own dharma, O lotus-eyed one, you will attain fame by righteousness, as Kārtavīrya Arjuna (did).)
O lotus-eyed one, having gained the earth by conquering through your own dharma, you will achieve fame through righteousness, just as Kārtavīrya Arjuna did. (3-83-112)

[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वास्य (āśvāsya) - having reassured; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having taken leave (of); महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - there only; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Thus having reassured the king, Nārada, the venerable sage, having taken leave of the great-souled one, there only disappeared.)
Thus, after reassuring the king, the venerable sage Nārada, having taken leave of the great-souled king, disappeared on the spot. (03-83-113)
युधिष्ठिरोऽपि धर्मात्मा तमेवार्थं विचिन्तयन्। तीर्थयात्राश्रयं पुण्यमृषीणां प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥०३-८३-११४॥
yudhiṣṭhiro'pi dharmātmā tamevāarthaṃ vicintayan। tīrthayātrāśrayaṃ puṇyam ṛṣīṇāṃ pratyavedayat॥03-83-114॥

(Yudhishthira also, righteous-souled, that indeed matter reflecting, resort to pilgrimage holy of sages informed.)
Yudhishthira, who was also righteous at heart, reflecting on that very matter, informed (his brothers) about the holy pilgrimage place of the sages. (03-83-114)
