भ्रातॄणां मतमाज्ञाय नारदस्य च धीमतः। पितामहसमं धौम्यं प्राह राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-८४-१॥
bhrātṝṇāṃ matam ājñāya nāradasya ca dhīmataḥ। pitāmahasamaṃ dhaumyaṃ prāha rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥03-84-1॥
[भ्रातॄणां (bhrātṝṇāṃ) - of the brothers; मतम् (matam) - opinion; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having ascertained; नारदस्य (nāradasya) - of Nārada; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; पितामहसमं (pitāmahasamam) - equal to a grandfather; धौम्यम् (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; प्राह (prāha) - said; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Having ascertained the opinion of the brothers and of wise Nārada, King Yudhiṣṭhira spoke to Dhaumya, who was equal to a grandfather.)

मया स पुरुषव्याघ्रो जिष्णुः सत्यपराक्रमः। अस्त्रहेतोर्महाबाहुरमितात्मा विवासितः ॥०३-८४-२॥

(By me, he, the tiger among men, the victorious, truly valorous, for the sake of weapon, the mighty-armed, of boundless spirit, was exiled.)
He, the tiger among men, mighty-armed and of boundless spirit, truly valorous and victorious, was exiled by me for the sake of a weapon. (03-84-2)
स हि वीरोऽनुरक्तश्च समर्थश्च तपोधन। कृती च भृशमप्यस्त्रे वासुदेव इव प्रभुः ॥०३-८४-३॥
sa hi vīro'nuraktaś ca samarthaś ca tapodhana। kṛtī ca bhṛśam apy astre vāsudeva iva prabhuḥ ॥03-84-3॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - affectionate; च (ca) - and; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; च (ca) - and; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of ascetic wealth; कृती (kṛtī) - accomplished; च (ca) - and; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; अपि (api) - also; अस्त्रे (astre) - in weapons; वासुदेव (vāsudeva) - Vāsudeva; इव (iva) - like; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master;]
(He indeed hero affectionate and capable and O possessor of ascetic wealth, accomplished and exceedingly also in weapons, Vāsudeva like master.)
He is indeed a hero, affectionate and capable, O ascetic sage; accomplished and exceedingly skilled in weapons, a master like Vāsudeva. (03-84-3)
अहं ह्येतावुभौ ब्रह्मन्कृष्णावरिनिघातिनौ। अभिजानामि विक्रान्तौ तथा व्यासः प्रतापवान् ॥ त्रियुगौ पुण्डरीकाक्षौ वासुदेवधनञ्जयौ ॥०३-८४-४॥
ahaṃ hyetāvubhau brahman kṛṣṇāvarinighātinau। abhijānāmi vikrāntau tathā vyāsaḥ pratāpavān॥ triyugau puṇḍarīkākṣau vāsudeva-dhananjayau॥03-84-4॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; एतौ (etau) - these two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कृष्णावरिनिघातिनौ (kṛṣṇāvarinighātinau) - destroyers of enemies (nighātinau) of Krishna's foes (kṛṣṇa-avari); अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I know; विक्रान्तौ (vikrāntau) - mighty; तथा (tathā) - also; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyasa; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - glorious; त्रियुगौ (triyugau) - existing in three yugas; पुण्डरीकाक्षौ (puṇḍarīkākṣau) - lotus-eyed ones; वासुदेवधनञ्जयौ (vāsudeva-dhananjayau) - Vasudeva (Krishna) and Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(I indeed, these two both, O Brahman, destroyers of Krishna's enemies, I know as mighty; also, Vyasa is glorious. Existing in three yugas, the lotus-eyed ones are Vasudeva and Dhananjaya. (03-84-4))

नारदोऽपि तथा वेद सोऽप्यशंसत्सदा मम। तथाहमपि जानामि नरनारायणावृषी ॥०३-८४-५॥
nārado’pi tathā veda so’pyaśaṁsatsadā mama। tathāhamapi jānāmi naranārāyaṇāvṛṣī ॥03-84-5॥
[नारदः (nāradaḥ) - sage Nārada; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - thus; वेद (veda) - knows; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; अशंसत् (aśaṁsat) - praised; सदा (sadā) - always; मम (mama) - for me; तथा (tathā) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; जानामि (jānāmi) - know; नरनारायणावृषी (naranārāyaṇāvṛṣī) - the two ṛṣis Nara and Nārāyaṇa;]
(Sage Nārada also thus knows; he also always praised for me. Thus I also know Nara and Nārāyaṇa the ṛṣis.)
Sage Nārada also knows thus; he, too, always praised (them) for me. In the same way, I also know the ṛṣis Nara and Nārāyaṇa. (03-84-5)
शक्तोऽयमित्यतो मत्वा मया सम्प्रेषितोऽर्जुनः। इन्द्रादनवरः शक्तः सुरसूनुः सुराधिपम् ॥ द्रष्टुमस्त्राणि चादातुमिन्द्रादिति विवासितः ॥०३-८४-६॥
śakto'ayamityato matvā mayā sampreṣito'rjunaḥ। indrādanavaraḥ śaktaḥ surasūnuḥ surādhipam ॥ draṣṭumastrāṇi cādātumindrāditi vivāsitaḥ ॥03-84-6॥
[शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; मया (mayā) - by me; सम्प्रेषितः (sampreṣitaḥ) - sent; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - from Indra; अनवरः (anavaraḥ) - not inferior; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; सुरसूनुः (surasūnuḥ) - the son of a god; सुराधिपम् (surādhipam) - the lord of the gods (Indra); द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - divine weapons; च (ca) - and; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to obtain; इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - from Indra; इति (iti) - thus; विवासितः (vivāsitaḥ) - sent forth;]
(Capable this thus therefore having thought by me sent Arjuna; from Indra not inferior capable son of a god the lord of the gods; to see weapons and to obtain from Indra thus sent forth.)
Having thought, “he is capable,” therefore I sent Arjuna; the son of a god, not inferior to Indra, is capable of seeing the lord of the gods and obtaining the weapons from Indra, thus he is sent. (03-84-6)
भीष्मद्रोणावतिरथौ कृपो द्रौणिश्च दुर्जयः। धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रेण वृता युधि महाबलाः ॥ सर्वे वेदविदः शूराः सर्वेऽस्त्रकुशलास्तथा ॥०३-८४-७॥
bhīṣmadroṇāvatirathau kṛpo drauṇiś ca durjayaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putreṇa vṛtā yudhi mahābalāḥ॥ sarve vedavidaḥ śūrāḥ sarve'strakuśalās tathā॥03-84-7॥
[भीष्मद्रोणावतिरथौ (bhīṣmadroṇāvatirathau) - Bhīṣma and Droṇa, best of chariot-warriors; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; द्रौणि: (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman); च (ca) - and; दुर्जयः (durjayaḥ) - Durjaya; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by the son; वृता (vṛtā) - engaged (retained); युधि (yudhi) - in battle; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty in strength; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - Veda-knowing; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अस्त्रकुशलाः (astrakuśalāḥ) - skilled in weapons; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Bhīṣma and Droṇa, best of chariot-warriors; Kṛpa; the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman); and Durjaya, mighty in strength, engaged by the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in battle. All are Veda-knowing heroes, all are also skilled in weapons.)
Bhīṣma and Droṇa, foremost among chariot-warriors, Kṛpa, Aśvatthāman, and Durjaya—mighty warriors retained in battle by the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. All are heroes versed in the Vedas; all are skilled in weaponry as well. (03-84-7)
योद्धुकामश्च पार्थेन सततं यो महाबलः। स च दिव्यास्त्रवित्कर्णः सूतपुत्रो महारथः ॥०३-८४-८॥
yoddhukāmaś ca pārthena satataṃ yo mahābalaḥ। sa ca divyāstravit karṇaḥ sūtaputro mahārathaḥ॥03-84-8॥
[योद्धुकामः (yoddhukāmaḥ) - desirous of fighting; च (ca) - and; पार्थेन (pārthena) - with Partha (Arjuna); सततम् (satatam) - always; यः (yaḥ) - who; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - greatly powerful; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; दिव्यास्त्रवित् (divyāstravit) - knower of celestial weapons; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; सूुतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - the son of a charioteer; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior;]
(Desirous of fighting and always with Partha, who is greatly powerful; he and the knower of celestial weapons, Karna, the son of a charioteer, great chariot-warrior.)
He who is always eager to fight with Partha (Arjuna), that greatly powerful one, and also Karna, the son of a charioteer, a master of celestial weapons, a great chariot-warrior. (03-84-8)
सोऽश्ववेगानिलबलः शरार्चिस्तलनिस्वनः। रजोधूमोऽस्त्रसन्तापो धार्तराष्ट्रानिलोद्धतः ॥०३-८४-९॥
so'śvavegānilabalaḥ śarārcistalanisvanaḥ। rajo dhūmo'strasantāpo dhārtarāṣṭrāniloddhataḥ ॥03-84-9॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अश्ववेग (aśvavega) - with the speed of a horse; अनिलबळः (anilabalaḥ) - with the strength of wind; शरार्चिः (śarārciḥ) - arrow-flame; तलनिस्वनः (talanisvanaḥ) - having the sound of a clanging (shield); रजः (rajaḥ) - dust; धूमः (dhūmaḥ) - smoke; अस्त्रसन्तापः (astrasantāpaḥ) - heat from weapons; धार्तराष्ट्र (dhārtarāṣṭra) - (of) the Dhārtarāṣṭras (sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra); अनिल (anila) - wind; उद्धतः (uddhataḥ) - agitated;]
(He with the speed of a horse, with the strength of wind, (had) the arrow-flame, the sound of clanging (shield), dust, smoke, the heat from weapons, the wind of the Dhārtarāṣṭras, agitated.)
He moved with the speed of a horse, possessed the strength of the wind, a flaming arrow, the sound of clanging shields, raising dust and smoke and the heat of weapons, all agitated by the wind of the Dhārtarāṣṭras. (03-84-9)
निसृष्ट इव कालेन युगान्तज्वलनो यथा। मम सैन्यमयं कक्षं प्रधक्ष्यति न संशयः ॥०३-८४-१०॥
nisṛṣṭa iva kālena yugāntajvalano yathā। mama sainyamayaṃ kakṣaṃ pradhakṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ॥03-84-10॥
[निसृष्ट (nisṛṣṭa) - sent out; released; इव (iva) - as if; like; कालेन (kālena) - by time; by kāla; युगान्तज्वलनः (yugāntajvalanaḥ) - the fire at the end of the age; यथा (yathā) - just as; मम (mama) - my; सैन्यमयम् (sainyamayam) - consisting of my army; कक्षम् (kakṣam) - domain; area; प्रधक्ष्यति (pradhakṣyati) - will burn up; will consume; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Sent out as if by Time, just as the fire at the end of the age, my army-filled domain will burn up, not (is there) doubt.)
Just as the fire of the end of the age, sent forth by Time, consumes all, so too, there is no doubt that my army-filled region will be consumed. (03-84-10)
तं स कृष्णानिलोद्धूतो दिव्यास्त्रजलदो महान्। श्वेतवाजिबलाकाभृद्गाण्डीवेन्द्रायुधोज्ज्वलः ॥०३-८४-११॥
taṃ sa kṛṣṇāniloddhūto divyāstrajalado mahān। śvetavājibalākābhṛd-gāṇḍīvendra-ayudh’ojjvalaḥ ॥03-84-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; स (sa) - he; कृष्णानिलोद्धूतः (kṛṣṇāniloddhūtaḥ) - stirred by black wind; दिव्यास्त्रजलदः (divyāstrajaladaḥ) - cloud of divine weapons; महान् (mahān) - great; श्वेतवाजि-बलाकाभृत् (śvetavājibalākābhṛt) - bearing horses as white as herons; गाण्डीवेन्द्रायुध-उज्ज्वलः (gāṇḍīvendra-ayudh’ojjvalaḥ) - illuminated by the bow Gandiva and Indra's weapon;]
(Him, he, stirred by black wind, great cloud of divine weapons, bearing horses as white as herons, illuminated by the bow Gandiva and Indra's weapon.)
He, a great cloud of divine weapons stirred by the black wind, bearing horses as white as herons, illuminated by the Gandiva bow and Indra's weapon, shone forth. (03-84-11)
सततं शरधाराभिः प्रदीप्तं कर्णपावकम्। उदीर्णोऽर्जुनमेघोऽयं शमयिष्यति संयुगे ॥०३-८४-१२॥
satataṃ śaradhārābhiḥ pradīptaṃ karṇapāvakam। udīrṇo'rjunamegho'yaṃ śamayiṣyati saṃyuge ॥03-84-12॥
[सततम् (satatam) - constantly; शरधाराभिः (śaradhārābhiḥ) - with streams of arrows; प्रदीप्तम् (pradīptam) - kindled; कर्णपावकम् (karṇapāvakam) - Karna-fire; उदीर्णः (udīrṇaḥ) - risen; अर्जुनमेघः (arjunameghaḥ) - Arjuna-cloud; अयम् (ayam) - this; शमयिष्यति (śamayiṣyati) - will extinguish; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Constantly with streams of arrows kindled Karna-fire, risen Arjuna-cloud this will extinguish in battle.)
The Arjuna-cloud that has risen will, in battle, extinguish the Karna-fire that is constantly kindled by streams of arrows. (03-84-12)
स साक्षादेव सर्वाणि शक्रात्परपुरञ्जयः। दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि बीभत्सुस्तत्त्वतः प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥०३-८४-१३॥
sa sākṣādeva sarvāṇi śakrāt parapurañjayaḥ। divyāny astrāṇi bībhatsus tattvataḥ pratipatsyate॥03-84-13॥
[स (sa) - he; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - from Śakra (Indra); पर-पुरञ्जयः (para-purañjayaḥ) - destroyer of enemy cities; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; प्रतिपत्स्यते (pratipatsyate) - will obtain;]
(He directly indeed all from Śakra (Indra) destroyer of enemy cities divine weapons Bībhatsu truly will obtain.)
That Bībhatsu, the destroyer of enemy cities, will indeed directly obtain all divine weapons truly from Śakra (Indra). (03-84-13)
अलं स तेषां सर्वेषामिति मे धीयते मतिः। नास्ति त्वतिक्रिया तस्य रणेऽरीणां प्रतिक्रिया ॥०३-८४-१४॥
alaṁ sa teṣāṁ sarveṣāmiti me dhīyate matiḥ। nāsti tvatikriyā tasya raṇe'rīṇāṁ pratikriyā॥03-84-14॥
[अलं (alaṁ) - enough; sufficient; स (sa) - he; तेषां (teṣām) - of those; of them; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - to me; in me; धीयते (dhīyate) - is considered; is thought; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; opinion; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; does not exist; तु (tu) - but; अतिक्रिया (atikriyā) - overcoming; surpassing; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अरीणाम् (arīṇām) - of the enemies; प्रतिक्रिया (pratikriyā) - counteraction; response;]
(Enough, he, of those, of all, thus, to me is considered mind; there is not but overcoming of him in battle by the enemies, (no) counteraction.)
"He is enough for all of them"—this is what I think; but there is no surpassing him in battle, nor any counteraction from the enemies. (3-84-14)
तं वयं पाण्डवं सर्वे गृहीतास्त्रं धनञ्जयम्। द्रष्टारो न हि बीभत्सुर्भारमुद्यम्य सीदति ॥०३-८४-१५॥
taṃ vayaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ sarve gṛhītāstraṃ dhanañjayam। draṣṭāro na hi bībhatsur bhāram udyamya sīdati ॥03-84-15॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वयम् (vayam) - we; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गृहीतास्त्रं (gṛhītāstram) - holding weapons; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; द्रष्टारः (draṣṭāraḥ) - observers; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu; भारम् (bhāram) - burden; उद्योग्य (udyamya) - having raised; सीदति (sīdati) - sinks;]
(Him we Pāṇḍava all, holding weapons Dhanañjaya, observers; not indeed Bībhatsu, burden having raised, sinks.)
We all see that Pāṇḍava, Dhanañjaya, holding weapons; indeed, Bībhatsu does not sink after lifting the burden. (03-84-15)
वयं तु तमृते वीरं वनेऽस्मिन्द्विपदां वर। अवधानं न गच्छामः काम्यके सह कृष्णया ॥०३-८४-१६॥
vayaṁ tu tam ṛte vīraṁ vane'smin dvipadāṁ vara। avadhānaṁ na gacchāmaḥ kāmyake saha kṛṣṇayā ॥03-84-16॥
[वयं (vayaṁ) - we; तु (tu) - but; तम् (tam) - him; ऋते (ṛte) - without; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; वने (vane) - in the forest; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; द्विपदाम् (dvipadām) - of bipeds; वर (vara) - best; अवधानम् (avadhānam) - care; न (na) - not; गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - shall go; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka (forest); सह (saha) - with; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī);]
(We but him without, hero, in the forest, in this, of bipeds best, care not shall go in Kāmyaka with Kṛṣṇā.)
But we will not go safely in this forest of Kāmyaka with Kṛṣṇā, O best of men, without him, the hero. (03-84-16)
भवानन्यद्वनं साधु बह्वन्नं फलवच्छुचि। आख्यातु रमणीयं च सेवितं पुण्यकर्मभिः ॥०३-८४-१७॥
bhavān anyad vanaṃ sādhu bahv annaṃ phalavat śuci। ākhyātu ramaṇīyaṃ ca sevitaṃ puṇya-karmabhiḥ॥03-84-17॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectful); अन्यत् (anyat) - other; वनम् (vanam) - forest; साधु (sādhu) - well; properly; बहु-अन्नम् (bahv- annam) - much food; फलवत् (phalavat) - fruitful; having fruits; शुचि (śuci) - pure; आख्यातु (ākhyātu) - let (you) tell; रमणीयम् (ramaṇīyam) - pleasant; delightful; च (ca) - and; सेवितम् (sevitam) - frequented; resorted to; पुण्य-कर्मभिः (puṇya-karmabhiḥ) - by the virtuous; by those of meritorious deeds;]
(You, other forest (which is) well (with) much food, fruitful, pure, let (you) tell (about), (which is) pleasant and frequented by the virtuous.)
Please describe for us another forest which is good, abundant in food, fruitful, pure, pleasant, and frequented by those who perform virtuous deeds. (03-84-17)
यत्र कञ्चिद्वयं कालं वसन्तः सत्यविक्रमम्। प्रतीक्षामोऽर्जुनं वीरं वर्षकामा इवाम्बुदम् ॥०३-८४-१८॥
yatra kañcid vayaṃ kālaṃ vāsantaḥ satyavikramam। pratīkṣāmo'rjunaṃ vīraṃ varṣakāmā ivāmbudam॥03-84-18॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some (time); वयम् (vayam) - we; कालम् (kālam) - time; वसन्तः (vasantaḥ) - resided; सत्यविक्रमम् (satyavikramam) - truly valiant; प्रतीक्षामः (pratīkṣāmaḥ) - waited for; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; वर्षकामाः (varṣakāmāḥ) - those desiring rain; इव (iva) - like; अम्बुदम् (ambudam) - cloud;]
(Where some (time) we resided time truly valiant, we waited for Arjuna hero like those desiring rain (wait for) cloud.)
Where for some time we stayed with the truly valiant (one), we waited for Arjuna, the hero, like those who long for rain wait for the cloud. (03-84-18)
विविधानाश्रमान्कांश्चिद्द्विजातिभ्यः परिश्रुतान्। सरांसि सरितश्चैव रमणीयांश्च पर्वतान् ॥०३-८४-१९॥
vividhānaśramānkāṁścid dvijātibhyaḥ pariśrutān। sarāṁsi saritaścaiva ramaṇīyāṁśca parvatān ॥03-84-19॥

(Speak, for not indeed to us, O Brahman, is pleasing (anything) except him, Arjuna. In this Kamyaka forest, residence (is) — let us go towards another direction.)
Tell us, O Brahman, for except for Arjuna, nothing pleases us. Let us leave this Kamyaka forest and go in another direction. (03-84-20)
