अवन्तिषु प्रतीच्यां वै कीर्तयिष्यामि ते दिशि। यानि तत्र पवित्राणि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च ॥०३-८७-१॥
avantiṣu pratīcyāṃ vai kīrtayiṣyāmi te diśi। yāni tatra pavitrāṇi puṇyānyāyatanāni ca ॥03-87-1॥

(In the Avanti regions, in the western direction, indeed, I shall recount to you, those which there are holy, meritorious shrines and;)

प्रियङ्ग्वाम्रवनोपेता वानीरवनमालिनी। प्रत्यक्स्रोता नदी पुण्या नर्मदा तत्र भारत ॥०३-८७-२॥
priyaṅgv-āmra-vanopetā vānīra-vanamālinī। pratyak-srotā nadī puṇyā narmadā tatra bhārata ॥03-87-2॥

निकेतः ख्यायते पुण्यो यत्र विश्रवसो मुनेः। जज्ञे धनपतिर्यत्र कुबेरो नरवाहनः ॥०३-८७-३॥
niketaḥ khyāyate puṇyo yatra viśravaso muneḥ। jajñe dhana-patir yatra kubero nara-vāhanaḥ॥03-87-3॥

वैडूर्यशिखरो नाम पुण्यो गिरिवरः शुभः। दिव्यपुष्पफलास्तत्र पादपा हरितच्छदाः ॥०३-८७-४॥
vaiḍūryaśikharo nāma puṇyo girivaraḥ śubhaḥ। divyapuṣpaphalās tatra pādapā haritacchadāḥ॥03-87-4॥
[वैडूर्यशिखरो (vaiḍūryaśikharaḥ) - Having a peak of beryl; नाम (nāma) - named; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - holy; गिरिवरः (girivaraḥ) - excellent mountain; शुभः (śubhaḥ) - auspicious; दिव्यपुष्पफलाः (divyapuṣpaphalāḥ) - having divine flowers and fruits; तत्र (tatra) - there; पादपाः (pādapāḥ) - trees; हरितच्छदाः (haritacchadāḥ) - with green leaves;]
(Having a peak of beryl, named, holy, excellent, auspicious mountain. There, trees with divine flowers and fruits, with green leaves.)
There is an auspicious and holy excellent mountain named Vaiḍūryaśikhara, with a summit of beryl. There grow trees with divine flowers and fruits, their foliage bright green. (03-87-4)
तस्य शैलस्य शिखरे सरस्तत्र च धीमतः। प्रफुल्लनलिनं राजन्देवगन्धर्वसेवितम् ॥०३-८७-५॥
tasya śailasya śikhare saras tatra ca dhīmataḥ। praphullanalinam rājan deva-gandharva-sevitam॥03-87-5॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of that;’ शैलस्य (śailasya) - of the mountain;’ शिखरे (śikhare) - on the summit;’ सरः (saras) - lake;’ तत्र (tatra) - there;’ च (ca) - and;’ धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise (one);’ प्रफुल्लनलिनं (praphullanalinam) - abounding in blooming lotuses;’ राजन् (rājan) - O King;’ देवगन्धर्वसेवितम् (deva-gandharva-sevitam) - attended by devas and gandharvas;’;]
(Of that mountain, on the summit, there (is) a lake, and of the wise (one), abounding in blooming lotuses, O King, attended by devas and gandharvas.)

बह्वाश्चर्यं महाराज दृश्यते तत्र पर्वते। पुण्ये स्वर्गोपमे दिव्ये नित्यं देवर्षिसेविते ॥०३-८७-६॥
bahvāścaryaṃ mahārāja dṛśyate tatra parvate। puṇye svargopame divye nityaṃ devarṣisevite ॥03-87-6॥

(Much wonder, O great king, is seen there in the mountain, in the holy, heavenly-like, divine (mountain), constantly attended by divine sages.)

ह्रदिनी पुण्यतीर्था च राजर्षेस्तत्र वै सरित्। विश्वामित्रनदी पारा पुण्या परपुरञ्जय ॥०३-८७-७॥
hradinī puṇyatīrthā ca rājarṣes tatra vai sarit। viśvāmitranadī pārā puṇyā parapurañjaya ॥03-87-7॥
[ह्रदिनी (hradinī) - the lake; पुण्यतीर्था (puṇyatīrthā) - sacred ford; च (ca) - and; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; सरित् (sarit) - river; विश्वामित्रनदी (viśvāmitranadī) - Viśvāmitra river; पारा (pārā) - beyond; पुण्या (puṇyā) - sacred; परपुरञ्जय (parapurañjaya) - O conqueror of enemy cities;]
(The lake, sacred ford, and there indeed the river of the royal sage, the Viśvāmitra river, beyond, sacred, O conqueror of enemy cities.)
There, O conqueror of enemy cities, is the sacred lake, the holy ford, and the river of the royal sage—the sacred Viśvāmitra river, lying beyond. (03-87-7)
यस्यास्तीरे सतां मध्ये ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः। पपात स पुनर्लोकाँल्लेभे धर्मान्सनातनान् ॥०३-८७-८॥
yasyāstīre satāṃ madhye yayātir-nahuṣātmajaḥ। papāta sa punarlokān-lebhe dharmān-sanātanān ॥03-87-8॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; (of whom); अस्तीरे (astiīre) - on the bank; (at the shore; of); सतां (satām) - of the virtuous; (of the good; of the noble ones); मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; (among; in the middle;); ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayati; (proper name; a king); नहुषात्मजः (nahuṣātmajaḥ) - son of Nahusha; (Nahusha's son); पपात (papāta) - fell; (he fell); स (sa) - he; (that one); पुनर्लोकान् (punarlokān) - again (the) worlds; (heavenly realms; worlds again); लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; (gained; acquired); धर्मान् (dharmān) - virtues; (righteousness-es; merits; laws;); सनातनान् (sanātanān) - eternal; (everlasting);]

तत्र पुण्यह्रदस्तात मैनाकश्चैव पर्वतः। बहुमूलफलो वीर असितो नाम पर्वतः ॥०३-८७-९॥
tatra puṇyahṛdastāt mainākaścaiva parvataḥ। bahumūlaphalo vīra asito nāma parvataḥ ॥03-87-9॥

There, O dear, is a sacred lake, and also the mountain called Mainaka; and O hero, there is a mountain named Asita, rich in roots and fruits. (03-87-9)
आश्रमः कक्षसेनस्य पुण्यस्तत्र युधिष्ठिर। च्यवनस्याश्रमश्चैव ख्यातः सर्वत्र पाण्डव ॥ तत्राल्पेनैव सिध्यन्ति मानवास्तपसा विभो ॥०३-८७-१०॥
āśramaḥ kakṣasenasya puṇyas tatra yudhiṣṭhira। cyavanasya āśramaś caiva khyātaḥ sarvatra pāṇḍava॥ tatra alpenaiva sidhyanti mānavās tapasā vibho॥03-87-10॥
[आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; कक्षसेनस्य (kakṣasenasya) - of Kakṣasena; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - holy; तत्र (tatra) - there; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - famed; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; तत्र (tatra) - there; अल्पेन (alpena) - with little; एव (eva) - indeed; सिध्यन्ति (sidhyanti) - are accomplished; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men; तपसा (tapasā) - by asceticism; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Hermitage of Kakṣasena, holy, there, O Yudhiṣṭhira; and the hermitage of Cyavana indeed is famed everywhere, O Pāṇḍava. There with little indeed men are accomplished by asceticism, O mighty one. (03-87-10))
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the hermitage of Kakṣasena is holy there; and the hermitage of Cyavana too is renowned everywhere, O Pāṇḍava. There, O mighty one, people attain success with little ascetic effort. (03-87-10)
जम्बूमार्गो महाराज ऋषीणां भावितात्मनाम्। आश्रमः शाम्यतां श्रेष्ठ मृगद्विजगणायुतः ॥०३-८७-११॥
jambūmārgo mahārāja ṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām। āśramaḥ śāmyatāṃ śreṣṭha mṛgadvijagaṇāyutaḥ॥03-87-11॥
[जम्बूमार्गः (jambūmārgaḥ) - Jambū path; (the way named after a Jambu tree); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the seers; (of sages); भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - whose souls are purified; (of those perfected in spirit); आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; शाम्यताम् (śāmyatām) - of the tranquil; (of the peaceful ones); श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - most excellent; मृगद्विजगणायुतः (mṛgadvijagaṇāyutaḥ) - abounding in groups of beasts and birds;]
(Jambū path, O great king, of the seers whose souls are purified, hermitage of the tranquil, most excellent, abounding in groups of beasts and birds.)
O great king, Jambū Path is the most excellent hermitage of the purified-souled seers, tranquil and abundantly populated by groups of beasts and birds. (03-87-11)
ततः पुण्यतमा राजन्सततं तापसायुता। केतुमाला च मेध्या च गङ्गारण्यं च भूमिप ॥ ख्यातं च सैन्धवारण्यं पुण्यं द्विजनिषेवितम् ॥०३-८७-१२॥
tataḥ puṇyatamā rājansatataṃ tāpasāyutā। ketumālā ca medhyā ca gaṅgāraṇyaṃ ca bhūmipa ॥ khyātaṃ ca saindhavāraṇyaṃ puṇyaṃ dvijaniṣevitam ॥03-87-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुण्यतमा (puṇyatamā) - most holy; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सततं (satataṃ) - always; तापसायुता (tāpasāyutā) - endowed with ascetics; केतुमाला (ketumāla) - Ketumālā; च (ca) - and; मेध्या (medhyā) - Medhyā; च (ca) - and; गङ्गारण्यं (gaṅgāraṇyaṃ) - Ganga forest; च (ca) - and; भूमिप (bhūmipa) - O ruler of the earth; ख्यातं (khyātaṃ) - famous; च (ca) - and; सैन्धवारण्यं (saindhavāraṇyaṃ) - Sindhu forest; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - holy; द्विजनिषेवितम् (dvijaniṣevitam) - attended by twice-born;]
(Then most holy, O king, always endowed with ascetics, Ketumalā and Medhyā and Ganga forest and, O ruler of the earth, (the) famous Sindhu forest, holy, attended by twice-born.)
Then, O king, the most sacred regions always frequented by ascetics—Ketumalā, Medhyā, the Ganga forest, and, O ruler of the earth, the renowned holy Sindhu forest frequented by Brahmins. (03-87-12)
पितामहसरः पुण्यं पुष्करं नाम भारत। वैखानसानां सिद्धानामृषीणामाश्रमः प्रियः ॥०३-८७-१३॥
pitāmahasaraḥ puṇyaṃ puṣkaraṃ nāma bhārata। vaikhānasānāṃ siddhānāṃ ṛṣīṇām āśramaḥ priyaḥ ॥03-87-13॥

अप्यत्र संस्तवार्थाय प्रजापतिरथो जगौ। पुष्करेषु कुरुश्रेष्ठ गाथां सुकृतिनां वर ॥०३-८७-१४॥
apyatra saṁstavārthāya prajāpati-ratho jagau. puṣkareṣu kuru-śreṣṭha gāthāṁ sukṛtināṁ vara ॥03-87-14॥
[अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; संस्तवार्थाय (saṁstavārthāya) - for the sake of praise; प्रजापतिरथः (prajāpatirathaḥ) - the lord of creatures then; जगौ (jagau) - sang; पुष्करेषु (puṣkareṣu) - among the Puṣkaras; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuru-śreṣṭha) - O best of Kurus; गाथाम् (gāthām) - song; सुकृतिनाम् (sukṛtinām) - of the virtuous; वर (vara) - best;]

मनसाप्यभिकामस्य पुष्कराणि मनस्विनः। पापाणि विप्रणश्यन्ति नाकपृष्ठे च मोदते ॥०३-८७-१५॥
manasāpyabhikāmasya puṣkarāṇi manasvinaḥ। pāpāṇi vipraṇaśyanti nākapṛṣṭhe ca modate॥03-87-15॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by mind; अपि (api) - even; अभिकामस्य (abhikāmasya) - of one who desires earnestly; पुष्कराणि (puṣkarāṇi) - sacred ponds; मनस्विनः (manasvinaḥ) - of the high-minded; पापाणि (pāpāṇi) - sins; विप्रणश्यन्ति (vipraṇaśyanti) - completely perish; नाकपृष्ठे (nākapṛṣṭhe) - in the heaven; च (ca) - and; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(By mind even, of one who desires earnestly, sacred ponds, of the high-minded, sins completely perish, in the heaven and rejoices.)
Even by merely wishing in the mind, the high-minded person’s sins are destroyed at the sacred ponds, and he rejoices in heaven. (03-87-15)
