(In the northern direction, O tiger among kings, the meritorious places which indeed, those to you I shall recount, holy places and shrines and.)
O tiger among kings, I will recount to you the holy places and shrines that are in the northern direction. (03-88-1)
सरस्वती पुण्यवहा ह्रदिनी वनमालिनी। समुद्रगा महावेगा यमुना यत्र पाण्डव ॥०३-८८-२॥

तत्र पुण्यतमं तीर्थं प्लक्षावतरणं शिवम्। यत्र सारस्वतैरिष्ट्वा गच्छन्त्यवभृथं द्विजाः ॥०३-८८-३॥
tatra puṇyatamaṁ tīrthaṁ plakṣāvataraṇaṁ śivam। yatra sārasvatairiṣṭvā gacchantyavabhṛthaṁ dvijāḥ ॥03-88-3॥

There is the most sacred tīrtha, the auspicious Plakṣāvataraṇa, where twice-born sages of Sarasvatī, having completed rites, proceed for the ceremonial bath. (03-88-3)
पुण्यं चाख्यायते दिव्यं शिवमग्निशिरोऽनघ। सहदेवोऽयजद्यत्र शम्याक्षेपेण भारत ॥०३-८८-४॥
puṇyaṃ cākhyāyate divyaṃ śivam agniśiro'na gha। sahadevo'yajadyatra śamyākṣep eṇa bhārata॥03-88-4॥

अग्नयः सहदेवेन ये चिता यमुनामनु। शतं शतसहस्राणि सहस्रशतदक्षिणाः ॥०३-८८-६॥
agnayaḥ sahadevena ye citā yamunāmanu। śataṃ śatasahasrāṇi sahasraśatadakṣiṇāḥ॥03-88-6॥

सरस्वती नदी सद्भिः सततं पार्थ पूजिता। वालखिल्यैर्महाराज यत्रेष्टमृषिभिः पुरा ॥०३-८८-९॥
sarasvatī nadī sadbhiḥ satataṃ pārtha pūjitā। vālakhiḷyair mahārāja yatra iṣṭam ṛṣibhiḥ purā॥03-88-9॥

दृषद्वती पुण्यतमा तत्र ख्याता युधिष्ठिर। तत्र वैवर्ण्यवर्णौ च सुपुण्यौ मनुजाधिप ॥०३-८८-१०॥
dṛṣadvatī puṇyatamā tatra khyātā yudhiṣṭhira। tatra vaivarṇyavarṇau ca supuṇyau manujādhipa ॥03-88-10॥

वेदज्ञौ वेदविदितौ विद्यावेदविदावुभौ। यजन्तौ क्रतुभिर्नित्यं पुण्यैर्भरतसत्तम ॥०३-८८-११॥
vedajñau vedaviditau vidyāvedavidāubhau। yajantau kratu-bhir-nityaṃ puṇyaiḥ bharata-sattama ॥03-88-11॥
[वेदज्ञौ (vedajñau) - knowers of the Veda; वेदविदितौ (vedaviditau) - known by the Veda; विद्यावेदविदौ (vidyāvedavidau) - knowers of learning and Veda; उभौ (ubhau) - both; यजन्तौ (yajantau) - they perform sacrifices; क्रतुभिः (kratu-bhiḥ) - with sacrificial rites; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - with merits; भरतसत्तम (bharata-sattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(The two, knowers of the Veda, known by the Veda, knowers of learning and Veda, both, always perform (sacrifices) with sacrificial rites, with merits, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, both of them, who are knowers of the Veda, known through the Veda, and mastered in learning and the Veda, always perform meritorious sacrifices with ritual offerings. (03-88-11)
समेत्य बहुशो देवाः सेन्द्राः सवरुणाः पुरा। विशाखयूपेऽतप्यन्त तस्मात्पुण्यतमः स वै ॥०३-८८-१२॥
sametya bahuśo devāḥ sendrāḥ savaruṇāḥ purā। viśākhayūpe'tapyanta tasmāt puṇyatamaḥ sa vai ॥03-88-12॥
[समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled together; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - with Indra; सवरुणाः (savarunāḥ) - with Varuṇa; पुरा (purā) - formerly; विशाखयूपे (viśākhayūpe) - at the Viśākha-yūpa (sacrificial post of Viśākhā); अतप्यन्त (atapyanta) - were scorched; were afflicted; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पुण्यतमः (puṇyatamaḥ) - most meritorious; स (sa) - that; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Having assembled together, many times the gods, with Indra and with Varuṇa, formerly, at the Viśākhayūpa, were scorched; therefore, that is indeed the most meritorious.)
Long ago, the gods, together with Indra and Varuṇa, repeatedly assembled and were afflicted at the Viśākhayūpa; therefore, that one is considered the most meritorious. (03-88-12)
ऋषिर्महान्महाभागो जमदग्निर्महायशाः। पलाशकेषु पुण्येषु रम्येष्वयजताभिभूः ॥०३-८८-१३॥
ṛṣir mahān mahābhāgo jamadagnir mahāyaśāḥ। palāśakeṣu puṇyeṣu ramyeṣv ayajat ābhibhūḥ॥03-88-13॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; महान् (mahān) - great; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - highly fortunate; जमदग्निः (jamadagniḥ) - Jamadagni; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; पलाशकेषु (palāśakeṣu) - among palāśa-trees; पुण्येषु (puṇyeṣu) - holy; रम्येषु (ramyeṣu) - pleasant; अयजात् (ayajat) - performed sacrifice; आभिभूः (ābhibhūḥ) - the illustrious one;]
(The great, highly fortunate sage, Jamadagni of great fame, the illustrious one, performed sacrifice among the holy and pleasant palāśa-trees.)

यत्र सर्वाः सरिच्छ्रेष्ठाः साक्षात्तमृषिसत्तमम्। स्वं स्वं तोयमुपादाय परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥०३-८८-१४॥
yatra sarvāḥ saricchreṣṭhāḥ sākṣāttam ṛṣi-sattamam। svaṃ svaṃ toyam upādāya parivāryopatasthire ॥03-88-14॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सरिच्छ्रेष्ठाः (saricchreṣṭhāḥ) - foremost rivers; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣi-sattamam) - the best among sages; स्वं स्वं (svaṃ svaṃ) - their respective; तोयम् (toyam) - water; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - approached;]
(Where all foremost rivers, directly that best among sages, their respective water having taken, having surrounded, approached.)

अपि चात्र महाराज स्वयं विश्वावसुर्जगौ। इमं श्लोकं तदा वीर प्रेक्ष्य वीर्यं महात्मनः ॥०३-८८-१५॥
api cātra mahārāja svayaṃ viśvāvasur jagau। imaṃ ślokaṃ tadā vīra prekṣya vīryaṃ mahātmanaḥ ॥03-88-15॥

(Moreover and here, O great king, Viśvāvasu himself sang this verse then, O hero, having observed the valor of the great-souled one.)

यजमानस्य वै देवाञ्जमदग्नेर्महात्मनः। आगम्य सरितः सर्वा मधुना समतर्पयन् ॥०३-८८-१६॥
yajamānasya vai devāñ jamad agner mahātmanaḥ। āgamya saritaḥ sarvā madhunā samatarpayan॥03-88-16॥

(Of the sacrificer indeed the gods, having arrived at all the rivers of the great-souled Jamadagni, fully satisfied (the rivers) with honey.)
Indeed, the gods of the sacrificer, having reached all the rivers belonging to the great-souled Jamadagni, satisfied (them) completely with honey. (03-88-16)
गन्धर्वयक्षरक्षोभिरप्सरोभिश्च शोभितम्। किरातकिंनरावासं शैलं शिखरिणां वरम् ॥०३-८८-१७॥
gandharvayakṣarakṣobhir apsarobhiś ca śobhitam। kirātakiṁnarāvāsaṁ śailaṁ śikhariṇāṁ varam॥03-88-17॥
[गन्धर्व (gandharva) - celestial musician; spirit; यक्ष (yakṣa) - nature-spirit; treasure-guardian; रक्षोभिः (rakṣobhiḥ) - with rākṣasas; with demons; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - with apsarases; with celestial nymphs; च (ca) - and; शोभितम् (śobhitam) - adorned; made beautiful; किरात (kirāta) - forest-dweller; mountaineer; किंनर (kiṁnara) - mythical being; celestial musician; आवासम् (āvāsam) - abode; dwelling; शैलम् (śailam) - mountain; शिखरिणाम् (śikhariṇām) - of (those) having peaks; वरम् (varam) - best; chief;]
(Adorned by gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and apsarases, the mountain, abode of kirātas and kiṁnaras, chief among those having peaks.)

[बिभेद (bibheda) - cleft; split; broke; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; vigorously; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; (the river Ganges); गङ्गाद्वारे (gaṅgādvāre) - at Gaṅgādvāra; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - holy; auspicious; तत् (tat) - that; ख्यायते (khyāyate) - is known; is celebrated; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेवितम् (brahmarṣigaṇasevitam) - attended (sevita) by groups (gaṇa) of Brahmarṣis;]
(Gaṅgā by force cleft at Gaṅgādvāra, Yudhiṣṭhira. That holy (place) is known, O king, attended by groups of Brahmarṣis.)

सनत्कुमारः कौरव्य पुण्यं कनखलं तथा। पर्वतश्च पुरुर्नाम यत्र जातः पुरूरवाः ॥०३-८८-१९॥
sanatkumāraḥ kauravya puṇyaṃ kanakhalaṃ tathā। parvataś ca purur nāma yatra jātaḥ purūrāvāḥ ॥03-88-19॥
[सनत्कुमारः (sanatkumāraḥ) - Sanatkumāra; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - holy; कनखलं (kanakhalaṃ) - Kanakhala; तथा (tathā) - and; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - mountain; च (ca) - and; पुरुर्नाम (purur nāma) - named Puru; यत्र (yatra) - where; जातः (jātaḥ) - was born; पुरूरवाः (purūrāvāḥ) - Purūravas;]

भृगुर्यत्र तपस्तेपे महर्षिगणसेवितः। स राजन्नाश्रमः ख्यातो भृगुतुङ्गो महागिरिः ॥०३-८८-२०॥
bhṛgur yatra tapas tepe mahaṛṣi-gaṇa-sevitaḥ। sa rājan nāśramaḥ khyāto bhṛgu-tuṅgo mahā-giriḥ॥03-88-20॥
[भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; (the sage); यत्र (yatra) - where; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तेपे (tepe) - practiced; महर्षिगणसेवितः (mahaṛṣi-gaṇa-sevitaḥ) - attended by bands of great ṛṣis; सः (saḥ) - that; राजन् (rājan) - O King; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - renowned; भृगुतुङ्गः (bhṛgu-tuṅgaḥ) - Bhṛgu-tuṅga; महागिरिः (mahā-giriḥ) - great mountain;]
(Bhṛgu where austerity practiced attended by bands of great ṛṣis; that O King hermitage renowned Bhṛgu-tuṅga great mountain.)
O King, that hermitage on the great mountain named Bhṛgu-tuṅga, where Sage Bhṛgu practiced austerities and was attended by assemblies of great seers, is well-known. (03-88-20)
यच्च भूतं भविष्यच्च भवच्च पुरुषर्षभ। नारायणः प्रभुर्विष्णुः शाश्वतः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥०३-८८-२१॥
yacca bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyacca bhavacca puruṣarṣabha। nārāyaṇaḥ prabhurviṣṇuḥ śāśvataḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥03-88-21॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; भूतम् (bhūtam) - past; भविष्यत् (bhaviṣyat) - future; च (ca) - and; भवत् (bhavat) - present; च (ca) - and; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - supreme person;]
(Which and past and future and present and O best of men, Nārāyaṇa (is), master, Viṣṇu, eternal, supreme person.)
O best of men, that which is past, future, and present—all this is Nārāyaṇa, the master, Viṣṇu, the eternal and supreme person. (03-88-21)
तस्यातियशसः पुण्यां विशालां बदरीमनु। आश्रमः ख्यायते पुण्यस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः ॥०३-८८-२२॥
tasyāti-yaśasaḥ puṇyāṃ viśālāṃ badarīmanu। āśramaḥ khyāyate puṇyastriṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ॥03-88-22॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अति-यशसः (ati-yaśasaḥ) - of great fame; पुण्यां (puṇyām) - holy; विशालां (viśālām) - vast; बदरीम् (badarīm) - Badarī (a sacred place); अनु (anu) - along; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; ख्यायते (khyāyate) - is renowned; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - holy; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - famous;]
(Of him, of great fame, the holy, vast Badarī along, the hermitage is renowned, holy, in the three worlds, famous.)
The hermitage of that highly renowned one, holy and vast along the sacred Badarī, is famed as holy and celebrated in all the three worlds. (03-88-22)
उष्णतोयवहा गङ्ग शीततोयवहापरा। सुवर्णसिकता राजन्विशालां बदरीमनु ॥०३-८८-२३॥
uṣṇatoyavahā gaṅgā śītatoyavahāparā। suvarṇasikatā rājan viśālāṃ badarīm anu ॥03-88-23॥
[उष्णतोयवहा (uṣṇatoyavahā) - carrying hot water; गङ्ग (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā (the Ganga river); शीततोयवहापरा (śītatoyavahāparā) - carrying cold water, the other; सुवर्णसिकता (suvarṇasikatā) - having golden sand; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विशालां (viśālām) - vast; बदरीमन् (badarīm anu) - following Badarī (Badrī, the holy place);]
(Carrying hot water Gaṅgā, carrying cold water the other, having golden sand, O king, vast, following Badarī.)
O king, the Gaṅgā carries hot water, while the other river carries cold water; it has golden sand and is vast, following (near) Badarī. (03-88-23)
ऋषयो यत्र देवाश्च महाभागा महौजसः। प्राप्य नित्यं नमस्यन्ति देवं नारायणं विभुम् ॥०३-८८-२४॥
ṛṣayo yatra devāśca mahābhāgā mahaujasaḥ। prāpya nityaṃ namasyanti devaṃ nārāyaṇaṃ vibhum॥03-88-24॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; यत्र (yatra) - where; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - very fortunate; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - of great energy; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; नित्यं (nityam) - always; नमस्यन्ति (namasyanti) - they bow (to); देवम् (devam) - to the god; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; विभुम् (vibhum) - the all-pervading;]
(Sages where gods and very fortunate ones of great energy, having attained, always bow to the god Nārāyaṇa the all-pervading.)
Where sages, gods, and the most fortunate and powerful beings, having reached, always bow to Nārāyaṇa, the all-pervading Lord. (03-88-24)
यत्र नारायणो देवः परमात्मा सनातनः। तत्र कृत्स्नं जगत्पार्थ तीर्थान्यायतनानि च ॥०३-८८-२५॥
yatra nārāyaṇo devaḥ paramātmā sanātanaḥ। tatra kṛtsnaṁ jagat pārtha tīrthāni āyatanāni ca ॥03-88-25॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; देवः (devaḥ) - God; परमात्मा (paramātmā) - Supreme Self; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; तत्र (tatra) - there; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; जगत् (jagat) - world; पार्थ (pārtha) - Pārtha; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; आयतनानि (āyatanāni) - abodes; च (ca) - and;]
(Where Nārāyaṇa, God, Supreme Self, eternal, there, entire world, O Pārtha, sacred places, abodes and.)
Wherever Nārāyaṇa, the eternal Supreme God, resides, O Pārtha, there all the world, sacred places, and abodes are found. (03-88-25)
तत्पुण्यं तत्परं ब्रह्म तत्तीर्थं तत्तपोवनम्। तत्र देवर्षयः सिद्धाः सर्वे चैव तपोधनाः ॥०३-८८-२६॥
tatpuṇyaṃ tatparaṃ brahma tattīrthaṃ tattapovanam। tatra devarṣayaḥ siddhāḥ sarve caiva tapodhanāḥ ॥03-88-26॥
[तत् (tat) - that; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - merit; sacredness; तत् (tat) - that; परं (param) - supreme; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; ultimate reality; तत् (tat) - that; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - sacred place; तत् (tat) - that; तपोवनम् (tapovanam) - ascetic grove; forest of penance; तत्र (tatra) - there; देवर्षयः (devarṣayaḥ) - divine sages; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - rich in austerity; ascetics;]
(That merit, that supreme Brahman, that sacred place, that ascetic grove; there, divine sages, perfected ones, all and indeed ascetics rich in penance.)
That is the merit, that is the supreme Brahman, that is the sacred place, that is the ascetic grove; there, all the divine sages, perfected beings, and ascetics endowed with austerity dwell. (03-88-26)
आदिदेवो महायोगी यत्रास्ते मधुसूदनः। पुण्यानामपि तत्पुण्यं तत्र ते संशयोऽस्तु मा ॥०३-८८-२७॥
ādidevo mahāyogī yatrāste madhusūdanaḥ। puṇyānām api tat puṇyaṃ tatra te saṃśayo'stu mā ॥03-88-27॥
[आदिदेवः (ādidevaḥ) - primordial god; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; यत्र (yatra) - where; आस्ते (āste) - abides; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana (slayer of Madhu, i.e., Viṣṇu); पुण्यानाम् (puṇyānām) - of merits; अपि (api) - even; तत् (tat) - that; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - to you; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; अस्तु (astu) - let be; मा (mā) - not;]
(The primordial god, the great yogi, where abides Madhusūdana; of merits even that merit, there to you doubt let be not.)
Where the primordial god, the great yogi Madhusūdana, abides—there is the supreme merit of merits; let there be no doubt of this for you. (03-88-27)
एतानि राजन्पुण्यानि पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपते। कीर्तितानि नरश्रेष्ठ तीर्थान्यायतनानि च ॥०३-८८-२८॥
etāni rājan puṇyāni pṛthivyāṃ pṛthivī-pate। kīrtitāni nara-śreṣṭha tīrthāni āyatānāni ca ॥03-88-28॥
[एतानि (etāni) - these; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुण्यानि (puṇyāni) - meritorious (things); पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivī-pate) - O lord of the earth; कीर्तितानि (kīrtitāni) - declared (as); नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best of men; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred places; आयतनानि (āyatanāni) - shrines; च (ca) - and;]
(These, O king, meritorious (things) on the earth, O lord of the earth, declared (as), O best of men, sacred places, shrines and.)
O king, these meritorious places on earth, O lord of the earth, have been declared, O best of men, as sacred places and shrines. (03-88-28)
एतानि वसुभिः साध्यैरादित्यैर्मरुदश्विभिः। ऋषिभिर्ब्रह्मकल्पैश्च सेवितानि महात्मभिः ॥०३-८८-२९॥
etāni vasubhiḥ sādhyair ādityaiḥ marudaśvibhiḥ। ṛṣibhir brahmakalpaiś ca sevitāni mahātmabhiḥ॥03-88-29॥
[एतानि (etāni) - these; वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - by the Vasus; साध्यैः (sādhyaiḥ) - by the Sādhyas; आदित्यैः (ādityaiḥ) - by the Ādityas; मरुदश्विभिः (marudaśvibhiḥ) - by the Maruts and Aśvins; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; ब्रह्मकल्पैः (brahmakalpaiḥ) - by those equivalent to Brahmā; च (ca) - and; सेवितानि (sevitāni) - attended to; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great souls;]
(These, by the Vasus, Sādhyas, Ādityas, Maruts, and Aśvins, by sages and those equivalent to Brahmā also, have been attended by great souls.)
These have been honored by the Vasus, Sādhyas, Ādityas, Maruts and Aśvins, by sages, Brahma-like beings, and other great souls. (03-88-29)
चरनेतानि कौन्तेय सहितो ब्राह्मणर्षभैः। भ्रातृभिश्च महाभागैरुत्कण्ठां विजहिष्यसि ॥०३-८८-३०॥
caranetāni kaunteya sahito brāhmaṇarṣabhaiḥ| bhrātṛbhiśca mahābhāgairutkaṇṭhāṃ vijahiṣyasi॥03-88-30॥
[चरनेतानि (caranetāni) - you will move around these; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; ब्राह्मणर्षभैः (brāhmaṇarṣabhaiḥ) - with foremost Brahmins; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; च (ca) - and; महाभागैः (mahābhāgaiḥ) - greatly fortunate ones; उत्कण्ठाम् (utkaṇṭhām) - anxiety; विजहिष्यसि (vijahiṣyasi) - you will abandon;]
(You will move around these, O son of Kunti, together with foremost Brahmins and brothers, greatly fortunate ones, anxiety you will abandon.)
O son of Kunti, moving about here with the foremost Brahmins and your greatly fortunate brothers, you will abandon all anxiety. (03-88-30)
