भूय एवाहमिच्छामि महर्षेस्तस्य धीमतः। कर्मणां विस्तरं श्रोतुमगस्त्यस्य द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-९८-१॥
bhūya evāham icchāmi maharṣeḥ tasya dhīmataḥ। karmaṇāṃ vistaraṃ śrotum agastyasya dvijottama ॥03-98-1॥
[भूय (bhūya) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - wish; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; तस्य (tasya) - his; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; कर्मणां (karmaṇāṃ) - of deeds; विस्तरं (vistaraṃ) - elaboration; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(Again indeed I wish of the great sage his wise deeds elaboration to hear of Agastya, O best of twice-born.)
O best of twice-born, I wish again indeed to hear in detail of the wise deeds of that great sage Agastya. (03-98-1)

शृणु राजन्कथां दिव्यामद्भुतामतिमानुषीम्। अगस्त्यस्य महाराज प्रभावममितात्मनः ॥०३-९८-२॥
śṛṇu rājan kathāṃ divyām adbhutām atimānuṣīm। agastyasya mahārāja prabhāvam amitātmanaḥ ॥03-98-2॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कथां (kathām) - story; दिव्याम् (divyām) - divine; अद्भुताम् (adbhutām) - wonderful; अति-मानुषीम् (atimānuṣīm) - superhuman; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; प्रभावम् (prabhāvam) - power; अमितात्मनः (amitātmanaḥ) - of the immeasurable-souled;]
(Hear, O king, the divine, wonderful, superhuman story; O great king, the power of Agastya of the immeasurable soul.)
O king, listen to the divine, wonderful, and superhuman story; O great king, it is about the power of Agastya, whose soul is immeasurable. (03-98-2)
आसन्कृतयुगे घोरा दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः। कालेया इति विख्याता गणाः परमदारुणाः ॥०३-९८-३॥
āsan kṛtayuge ghorā dānavā yuddha-durmadāḥ। kāleyā iti vikhyātā gaṇāḥ paramadāruṇāḥ॥03-98-3॥
[आसन् (āsan) - were; (they existed); कृतयुगे (kṛtayuge) - in the Krita Yuga; घोरा (ghorā) - terrible; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - danavas; demons; युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddha-durmadāḥ) - intoxicated by battle; कालेयाः (kāleyāḥ) - Kāleyas; children of Kāli; इति (iti) - thus; विख्याता (vikhyātā) - well-known; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups; hosts; परमदारुणाः (paramadāruṇāḥ) - extremely fierce;]
(Were, in the Krita Yuga, terrible danavas, intoxicated by battle. Called Kāleyas thus, well-known groups, extremely fierce.)
In the Krita Yuga there were terrible danavas, fiercely intoxicated by battle. These extremely fierce groups were well-known as the Kāleyas. (03-98-3)
ते तु वृत्रं समाश्रित्य नानाप्रहरणोद्यताः। समन्तात्पर्यधावन्त महेन्द्रप्रमुखान्सुरान् ॥०३-९८-४॥
te tu vṛtraṃ samāśritya nānā-praharaṇodyatāḥ। samantāt paryadhāvanta mahendra-pramukhān surān॥03-98-4॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - however; वृत्रं (vṛtram) - Vṛtra; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - having taken refuge with; नानाप्रहरणोद्यताः (nānā-praharaṇodyatāḥ) - armed with various weapons; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; पर्यधावन्त (paryadhāvanta) - ran around; महेन्द्रप्रमुखान् (mahendra-pramukhān) - having Indra as chief; सुरान् (surān) - the gods;]
(They, however, having taken refuge with Vṛtra, armed with various weapons, from all sides ran around the gods led by Mahendra.)
But they, taking refuge with Vṛtra and armed with various weapons, surrounded and attacked the gods led by Indra from all sides. (03-98-4)
ततो वृत्रवधे यत्नमकुर्वंस्त्रिदशाः पुरा। पुरंदरं पुरस्कृत्य ब्रह्माणमुपतस्थिरे ॥०३-९८-५॥
tato vṛtravadhé yatnam akurvaṃs tridaśāḥ purā। puraṃdaraṃ puraskṛtya brahmāṇam upatasthire ॥03-98-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृत्रवधे (vṛtravadhé) - for the slaying of Vṛtra; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; अकुर्वन् (akurvan) - made; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the thirty (gods); पुरा (purā) - formerly; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Indra; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing at the front; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - to Brahmā; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - they approached;]
(Then for the slaying of Vṛtra, effort made the thirty gods formerly. Indra placing at the front, to Brahmā they approached.)
Then, in ancient times, the thirty gods made efforts for the slaying of Vṛtra. They approached Brahmā, having placed Indra at the forefront. (03-98-5)
कृताञ्जलींस्तु तान्सर्वान्परमेष्ठी उवाच ह। विदितं मे सुराः सर्वं यद्वः कार्यं चिकीर्षितम् ॥०३-९८-६॥
kṛtāñjalīṃs tu tān sarvān parameṣṭhī uvāca ha। viditaṃ me surāḥ sarvaṃ yad vaḥ kāryaṃ cikīrṣitam ॥03-98-6॥
[कृताञ्जलीन् (kṛtāñjalīn) - having joined palms; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - those; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; परमेष्ठी (parameṣṭhī) - Brahmā; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed; विदितं (viditam) - known; मे (me) - to me; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; यत् (yat) - which; वः (vaḥ) - your; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - purpose; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - desired to be done;]
(Having joined palms, but those all Brahmā spoke indeed. Known to me, O gods, all which your purpose desired to be done.)
Brahmā, seeing all of them with joined palms, spoke: "O gods, I know all that you desire to accomplish." (03-98-6)
तमुपायं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथा वृत्रं वधिष्यथ। दधीच इति विख्यातो महानृषिरुदारधीः ॥०३-९८-७॥
tam-upāyaṁ pravakṣyāmi yathā vṛtraṁ vadhiṣyatha. dadhīca iti vikhyāto mahān ṛṣir udāradhīḥ ॥03-98-7॥
[तम् (tam) - that; (accusative singular masculine pronoun); उपायम् (upāyam) - means; method; way; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; I will tell; यथा (yathā) - how; according as; in order that; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vṛtra; (name, demon); वधिष्यथ (vadhiṣyatha) - you shall slay; you all will kill; दधीच (dadhīca) - Dadhīca; (proper noun, sage's name); इति (iti) - thus; so; in this manner; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - well-known; famous; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; seer; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - noble-minded; of lofty intellect;]
(That means I shall declare, in order that Vṛtra you shall slay. Dadhīca thus well-known, great sage, noble-minded.)
I will tell you the means by which you will slay Vṛtra. The great sage known as Dadhīca, who is noble-minded. (03-98-7)
तं गत्वा सहिताः सर्वे वरं वै सम्प्रयाचत। स वो दास्यति धर्मात्मा सुप्रीतेनान्तरात्मना ॥०३-९८-८॥
taṃ gatvā sahitāḥ sarve varaṃ vai samprayācata। sa vo dāsyati dharmātmā suprītenāntarātmanā ॥03-98-8॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; वै (vai) - indeed; सम्प्रयाचत (samprayācata) - ask for; स (sa) - he; वः (vaḥ) - to you; दास्यति (dāsyati) - will give; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous-souled; सुप्रीतेन (suprītena) - with well-pleased; अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - with his inner self;]
(Having gone to him, all together indeed ask for the boon. He, the righteous-souled, with a well-pleased inner self, will give it to you.)
Go to him together and ask for the boon. He, being righteous and deeply pleased in his heart, will grant it to you. (03-98-8)
स वाच्यः सहितैः सर्वैर्भवद्भिर्जयकाङ्क्षिभिः। स्वान्यस्थीनि प्रयच्छेति त्रैलोक्यस्य हिताय वै ॥ स शरीरं समुत्सृज्य स्वान्यस्थीनि प्रदास्यति ॥०३-९८-९॥
sa vācyah sahitaiḥ sarvair bhavadbhir jayakāṅkṣibhiḥ। svāny asthīni prayaccheti trailokyasya hitāya vai॥ sa śarīraṃ samutsṛjya svāny asthīni pradāsyati॥03-98-9॥
[स (sa) - he; वाच्यः (vācyah) - should be told; सहितैः (sahitaiḥ) - together with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; जयकाङ्क्षिभिः (jayakāṅkṣibhiḥ) - desiring victory; स्वान्यस्थीनि (svāny asthīni) - his own bones; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; इति (iti) - thus; त्रैलोक्यस्य (trailokyasya) - of the three worlds; हिताय (hitāya) - for the welfare; वै (vai) - indeed; स (sa) - he; शरीरं (śarīraṃ) - body; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having abandoned; स्वान्यस्थीनि (svāny asthīni) - his own bones; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will give;]
(He should be told by you all together, desiring victory: "Give your own bones"—thus, indeed, for the welfare of the three worlds. He, having abandoned the body, will give his own bones.)
You all, united and desiring victory, should tell him: "Give your own bones"—thus, for the welfare of the three worlds. He will relinquish his body and give his own bones. (03-98-9)
तस्यास्थिभिर्महाघोरं वज्रं सम्भ्रियतां दृढम्। महच्छत्रुहणं तीक्ष्णं षडश्रं भीमनिस्वनम् ॥०३-९८-१०॥
tasyāsthibhir mahāghoraṃ vajraṃ sambhriyhatāṃ dṛḍham। mahac chatruhaṇaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ ṣaḍaśraṃ bhīmanisvanam ॥03-98-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; अस्थिभिः (asthibhiḥ) - with bones; महाघोरं (mahāghoram) - very terrible; वज्रं (vajram) - thunderbolt; सम्भ्रियतां (sambhriyhatām) - let it be prepared; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firm; महच्छत्रुहणं (mahat-śatruhaṇam) - great enemy-destroying; तीक्ष्णं (tīkṣṇam) - sharp; षड्-अश्रं (ṣaḍ-aśram) - six-edged; भीम-निस्वनम् (bhīma-nisvanam) - terrifying sound;]
(With his bones, let a very terrible and firm thunderbolt be prepared—great, enemy-destroying, sharp, six-edged, terrifying in sound.)
Let a very terrible and firm thunderbolt be prepared from his bones—great, sharp, six-edged, of terrifying sound, and capable of destroying great enemies. (03-98-10)
तेन वज्रेण वै वृत्रं वधिष्यति शतक्रतुः। एतद्वः सर्वमाख्यातं तस्माच्छीघ्रं विधीयताम् ॥०३-९८-११॥
tena vajreṇa vai vṛtraṃ vadhiṣyati śatakratuḥ. etad vaḥ sarvam ākhyātam tasmāc chīghraṃ vidhīyatām ॥03-98-11॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with the thunderbolt; वै (vai) - indeed; वृत्रं (vṛtram) - Vṛtra (the demon); वधिष्यति (vadhiṣyati) - will slay; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Śatakratu (epithet of Indra); एतद् (etad) - this; वः (vaḥ) - to you (all); सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be done;]
(By that thunderbolt indeed Vṛtra will slay Śatakratu; this to you all has been told; therefore, quickly let it be done (03-98-11))
Śatakratu (Indra) will indeed slay Vṛtra with that thunderbolt. All this has been told to you; therefore, let it be done quickly. (03-98-11)
एवमुक्तास्ततो देवा अनुज्ञाप्य पितामहम्। नारायणं पुरस्कृत्य दधीचस्याश्रमं ययुः ॥०३-९८-१२॥
evam-uktās tato devā anujñāpya pitāmaham। nārāyaṇaṃ puraskṛtya dadhīcasya āśramaṃ yayuḥ ॥03-98-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - spoken (having been addressed); ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having taken leave (from); पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire (Brahmā); नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed in front; दधीचस्य (dadhīcasya) - of Dadhīca; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - the hermitage; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went;]
(Thus, (having been) addressed then the gods having taken leave of the grandsire, having placed Nārāyaṇa in front, went to the hermitage of Dadhīca.)
After being thus addressed, the gods, having received permission from the grandsire, with Nārāyaṇa at their head, went to the hermitage of Dadhīca. (03-98-12)
सरस्वत्याः परे पारे नानाद्रुमलतावृतम्। षट्पदोद्गीतनिनदैर्विघुष्टं सामगैरिव ॥ पुंस्कोकिलरवोन्मिश्रं जीवञ्जीवकनादितम् ॥०३-९८-१३॥
sarasvatyāḥ pare pāre nānādrumalatāvṛtam। ṣaṭpadodgītaninadairvighuṣṭaṃ sāmagairiva ॥ puṃs kokilaravonmiśraṃ jīvañjīvakanāditam ॥03-98-13॥
[सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvatī; परे (pare) - on the far; पारे (pāre) - shore; नाना (nānā) - various; द्रुम (druma) - trees; लता (latā) - creepers; आवृतम् (āvṛtam) - covered; षट्पद (ṣaṭpada) - bees; उद्गीत (udgīta) - chanted; निनदैः (ninadaiḥ) - by the sounds; विघुष्टम् (vighuṣṭam) - resounded; सामगैः (sāmagaiḥ) - by the singers of Sāma; इव (iva) - as if; पुंस् (puṃs) - of male; कोकिल (kokila) - cuckoo; रव (rava) - cry; उन्मिश्रम् (unmiśram) - intermixed; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; जीवक (jīvaka) - of jīvaka birds; नादितम् (nāditam) - resounded;]
(Of Sarasvatī on the far shore covered by various trees and creepers, resounded by the chanted sounds of bees as if by singers of Sāma, intermixed with the cry of male cuckoo, resonated by the living jīvaka birds.)
On the far shore of the Sarasvatī, covered with various trees and creepers, resounding with the chanting-like hums of bees as though by singers of the Sāma, mixed with the calls of the male cuckoo and enlivened by the sounds of jīvaka birds. (03-98-13)
महिषैश्च वराहैश्च सृमरैश्चमरैरपि। तत्र तत्रानुचरितं शार्दूलभयवर्जितैः ॥०३-९८-१४॥
mahiṣaiś ca varāhaiś ca sṛmaraiś camaraiḥ api। tatra tatra anucaritaṃ śārdūla-bhaya-varjitaiḥ ॥03-98-14॥
[महिषैः (mahiṣaiḥ) - by buffaloes; च (ca) - and; वराहैः (varāhaiḥ) - by boars; च (ca) - and; सृमरैः (sṛmaraiḥ) - by deer; चमरैः (camaraiḥ) - by antelopes; अपि (api) - also; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; अनुचरितं (anucaritam) - traversed; शार्दूलभयवर्जितैः (śārdūla-bhaya-varjitaiḥ) - devoid of fear of tigers;]
(By buffaloes and by boars and by deer and by antelopes also, here and there traversed, devoid of fear of tigers.)
Here and there, the area was traversed by buffaloes, boars, deer, and antelopes, all unafraid of tigers. (03-98-14)
करेणुभिर्वारणैश्च प्रभिन्नकरटामुखैः। सरोऽवगाढैः क्रीडद्भिः समन्तादनुनादितम् ॥०३-९८-१५॥
kareṇubhir vāraṇaiś ca prabhinnakaraṭāmukhaiḥ| saro'vagāḍhaiḥ krīḍadbhiḥ samantād anunāditam ॥03-98-15॥
[करेणुभिः (kareṇubhiḥ) - by female elephants; वारणैः (vāraṇaiḥ) - by elephants; च (ca) - and; प्रभिन्नकरटामुखैः (prabhinnakaraṭāmukhaiḥ) - with burst/trampled trunk-mouths; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; अवगाढैः (avagāḍhaiḥ) - entered; क्रीडद्भिः (krīḍadbhiḥ) - frolicking/playing; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; अनुनादितम् (anunāditam) - resounded;]
(By female elephants, and by elephants with burst trunk-mouths, a lake, entered and played in, on all sides, was resounded.)
The lake, entered and played in on all sides by female elephants and elephants with burst trunk-mouths, resounded everywhere. (03-98-15)
सिंहव्याघ्रैर्महानादान्नदद्भिरनुनादितम्। अपरैश्चापि संलीनैर्गुहाकन्दरवासिभिः ॥०३-९८-१६॥
siṁha-vyāghraiḥ mahā-nādān nadadbhir anunāditam। aparaiś cāpi saṁlīnair guhā-kandara-vāsibhiḥ॥03-98-16॥
[सिंहव्याघ्रैः (siṁha-vyāghraiḥ) - by lions and tigers; महानादान् (mahā-nādān) - great-roaring; नदद्भिः (nadadbhih) - making sounds; अनुनादितम् (anunāditam) - echoed; अपरैः (aparaiḥ) - by others; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; संलीनैः (saṁlīnaiḥ) - hidden; गुहाकन्दरवासिभिः (guhā-kandara-vāsibhiḥ) - by cave and cavern-dwellers;]
(Echoed by the great-roaring, sound-making lions and tigers, and also by others, hidden, dwelling in caves and caverns.)
The place was echoed by the loud roars of lions and tigers, and also by other creatures hidden away, dwelling in caves and caverns. (03-98-16)
तेषु तेष्ववकाशेषु शोभितं सुमनोरमम्। त्रिविष्टपसमप्रख्यं दधीचाश्रममागमन् ॥०३-९८-१७॥
teṣu teṣv avakāśeṣu śobhitaṃ sumanoramam। triviṣṭapasamaprakhyaṃ dadhīcāśramam āgaman ॥03-98-17॥
[तेषु तेषु (teṣu teṣu) - in those various; अवकाशेषु (avakāśeṣu) - places; शोभितं (śobhitam) - adorned; सुमनोरमम् (sumanoramam) - very delightful; त्रिविष्टपसमप्रख्यम् (triviṣṭapasamaprakhyam) - equal in splendor to heaven; दधीचाश्रमम् (dadhīcāśramam) - Dadhīca's hermitage; आगमन् (āgaman) - they arrived;]
(In those various places, adorned, very delightful, equal in splendor to heaven, Dadhīca's hermitage they arrived.)
In those various delightful and splendid places, they arrived at Dadhīca's hermitage, which was as magnificent as heaven. (03-98-17)
तत्रापश्यन्दधीचं ते दिवाकरसमद्युतिम्। जाज्वल्यमानं वपुषा यथा लक्ष्म्या पितामहम् ॥०३-९८-१८॥
tatrāpaśyandadhīcaṃ te divākarasamadyutim। jājvalyamānaṃ vapuṣā yathā lakṣmyā pitāmaham ॥03-98-18॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - they saw; दधीचम् (dadhīcam) - Dadhīca (Dadhīci, proper noun); ते (te) - they; दिवाकरसमद्युतिम् (divākarasamadyutim) - having the radiance equal to the sun; जाज्वल्यमानं (jājvalyamānam) - shining brightly; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - with (his) body; यथा (yathā) - just as; लक्ष्म्या (lakṣmyā) - with splendor; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - Brahmā (the grandsire);]
(There they saw Dadhīca, they (saw) (him) having radiance equal to the sun, shining brightly with (his) body, just as the grandsire with splendor.)
There they saw Dadhīca, shining with the radiance of the sun, brilliant in his body, like the grandsire Brahmā with his splendor. (03-98-18)
तस्य पादौ सुरा राजन्नभिवाद्य प्रणम्य च। अयाचन्त वरं सर्वे यथोक्तं परमेष्ठिना ॥०३-९८-१९॥

(Of him feet gods O king having greeted having bowed and they requested boon all as spoken by Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā).)
O king, the gods, having greeted and bowed to his feet, all requested the boon as spoken by Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā). (03-98-19)
ततो दधीचः परमप्रतीतः; सुरोत्तमांस्तानिदमभ्युवाच। करोमि यद्वो हितमद्य देवाः; स्वं चापि देहं त्वहमुत्सृजामि ॥०३-९८-२०॥
tato dadhīcaḥ paramapratītaḥ; surottamāṃs tān idam abhyuvāca. karomi yad vo hitam adya devāḥ; svaṃ ca api dehaṃ tu aham utsṛjāmi ॥03-98-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दधीचः (dadhīcaḥ) - Dadhīca; परमप्रतीतः (paramapratītaḥ) - most confident; सुरोत्तमान् (surottamān) - the best of gods; तान् (tān) - them; इदम् (idam) - this; अभ्युवाच (abhyuvāca) - addressed; करोमि (karomi) - I do; यत् (yat) - which; वः (vaḥ) - for you; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; अद्य (adya) - today; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; स्वम् (svam) - own; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; देहम् (deham) - body; तु (tu) - for indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; उत्सृजामि (utsṛjāmi) - give up;]
(Then Dadhīca, most confident, addressed those best of gods this: I do which for you is beneficial today, O gods; my own body also, indeed, I give up.)
Then Dadhīca, full of supreme confidence, addressed those best among the gods: "I shall do what is beneficial for you today, O gods; I shall also give up my own body." (03-98-20)
स एवमुक्त्वा द्विपदां वरिष्ठः; प्राणान्वशी स्वान्सहसोत्ससर्ज। ततः सुरास्ते जगृहुः परासो; रस्थीनि तस्याथ यथोपदेशम् ॥०३-९८-२१॥
sa evam-uktvā dvipadāṃ variṣṭhaḥ; prāṇān-vaśī svān-sahasā-utsasarja. tataḥ surāḥ te jagṛhuḥ parāsaḥ; asthīni tasya atha yathā-upadeśam ॥03-98-21॥
[स (sa) (sa) - he; एवमुक्त्वा (evam-uktvā) (evam-uktvā) - having thus spoken; द्विपदां (dvipadām) (dvipadām) - of the bipeds (humans); वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) (variṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; प्राणान्वशी (prāṇān-vaśī) (prāṇān-vaśī) - the one who controls life-breaths; स्वान् (svān) (svān) - his own; सहसा (sahasā) (sahasā) - suddenly; उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) (utsasarja) - he released; ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - then; सुराः (surāḥ) (surāḥ) - the gods; ते (te) (te) - they; जगृहुः (jagṛhuḥ) (jagṛhuḥ) - took; परासः (parāsaḥ) (parāsaḥ) - ashes; अस्थीनि (asthīni) (asthīni) - bones; तस्य (tasya) (tasya) - his; अथ (atha) (atha) - then; यथोपदेशम् (yathā-upadeśam) (yathā-upadeśam) - according to instruction;]
(He, having thus spoken, the foremost of bipeds, controlling his own life-breaths, suddenly released them. Then the gods, they took his ashes and bones then according to instruction.)
Having thus spoken, the foremost among bipeds, controlling his own life-breaths, suddenly gave them up. Then the gods collected his ashes and bones, as instructed. (03-98-21)
प्रहृष्टरूपाश्च जयाय देवा; स्त्वष्टारमागम्य तमर्थमूचुः। त्वष्टा तु तेषां वचनं निशम्य; प्रहृष्टरूपः प्रयतः प्रयत्नात् ॥०३-९८-२२॥
prahṛṣṭarūpāś ca jayāya devā; tvaṣṭāram āgamya tam artham ūcuḥ. tvaṣṭā tu teṣāṃ vacanaṃ niśamya; prahṛṣṭarūpaḥ prayataḥ prayatnāt ॥03-98-22॥
[प्रहृष्टरूपाः (prahṛṣṭarūpāḥ) - having delighted form; च (ca) - and; जयाय (jayāya) - for victory; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; स्त्वष्टारम् (tvaṣṭāram) - Tvaṣṭṛ (the divine craftsman); आगम्य (āgamya) - having approached; तम् (tam) - to him; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; त्वष्टा (tvaṣṭā) - Tvaṣṭṛ; तु (tu) - but; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; प्रहृष्टरूपः (prahṛṣṭarūpaḥ) - of delighted form; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - intent; प्रयत्नात् (prayatnāt) - with effort;]
(Having delighted forms and for victory the gods, having approached Tvaṣṭṛ, to him the purpose they said. Tvaṣṭṛ, but, having heard their words, of delighted form, intent, with effort.)
The gods, delighted and eager for victory, approached Tvaṣṭṛ and stated their purpose to him. Tvaṣṭṛ, in turn, gladly, listened to their words and with intent and effort responded. (03-98-22)
चकार वज्रं भृशमुग्ररूपं; कृत्वा च शक्रं स उवाच हृष्टः। अनेन वज्रप्रवरेण देव; भस्मीकुरुष्वाद्य सुरारिमुग्रम् ॥०३-९८-२३॥
cakāra vajraṃ bhṛśam-ugrarūpaṃ; kṛtvā ca śakraṃ sa uvāca hṛṣṭaḥ. anena vajra-pravareṇa deva; bhasmī kuru ṣva adya surāri-m-ugram ॥03-98-23॥
[चकार (cakāra) - he made; वज्रं (vajraṃ) - the thunderbolt; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - very; उग्ररूपं (ugrarūpaṃ) - of terrible form; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; च (ca) - and; शक्रं (śakraṃ) - Indra; सः (saḥ) - he; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; अनेन (anena) - with this; वज्रप्रवरेण (vajra-pravareṇa) - with the excellent thunderbolt; देव (deva) - O god; भस्मीकुरुष्व (bhasmī kuru ṣva) - reduce to ashes; आद्य (adya) - today; सुरारिम् (sura-arim) - enemy of the gods; उग्रं (ugram) - fierce one;]
(He made a thunderbolt of very terrible form; and having made Indra, he joyfully spoke: With this excellent thunderbolt, O god, today reduce to ashes the fierce enemy of the gods.)
He fashioned a thunderbolt of exceedingly terrible form; having done so, he joyfully addressed Indra: 'O god, with this excellent thunderbolt, destroy today the fierce enemy of the gods.' (03-98-23)
ततो हतारिः सगणः सुखं वै; प्रशाधि कृत्स्नं त्रिदिवं दिविष्ठः। त्वष्ट्रा तथोक्तः स पुरंदरस्तु; वज्रं प्रहृष्टः प्रयतोऽभ्यगृह्णात् ॥०३-९८-२४॥
tato hatāriḥ sagaṇaḥ sukhaṁ vai; praśādhi kṛtsnaṁ tridivaṁ diviṣṭhaḥ. tvaṣṭrā tathoktaḥ sa puraṁdarastu; vajraṁ prahṛṣṭaḥ prayato'bhyagṛhṇāt ॥03-98-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हतारिः (hatāriḥ) - the slayer of foes; सगणः (sagaṇaḥ) - with his attendants; सुखं (sukham) - happily; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - rule over; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; त्रिदिवं (tridivam) - heaven; दिविष्ठः (diviṣṭhaḥ) - dweller of heaven; त्वष्ट्रा (tvaṣṭrā) - by Tvaṣṭṛ; तथा (tathā) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); तु (tu) - but; वज्रं (vajram) - the thunderbolt; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - prepared; अभ्यगृह्णात् (abhyagṛhṇāt) - accepted;]
(Then the slayer of foes, with his attendants, indeed happily; rule over the entire heaven, O dweller of heaven. Thus addressed by Tvaṣṭṛ, he, Purandara, but the thunderbolt, joyful, prepared, accepted.)
