Lomaśa said.
इल्वलस्तान्विदित्वा तु महर्षिसहितान्नृपान्। उपस्थितान्सहामात्यो विषयान्तेऽभ्यपूजयत् ॥०३-९७-१॥
ilvalas tān viditvā tu maharṣisahitān nṛpān। upasthitān sahāmātyo viṣayānte'bhyapūjayat॥03-97-1॥
[इल्वलः (ilvalaḥ) - Ilvala; (proper noun); तान् (tān) - those; (accusative plural); विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; तु (tu) - but; महर्षिसहितान् (maharṣisahitān) - together with great sages; (accusative plural); नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; (accusative plural); उपस्थितान् (upasthitān) - those who had arrived; (accusative plural); सह (saha) - together with; अमात्यः (amātyaḥ) - minister; विषयान्ते (viṣayānte) - at the end of the territory; (locative singular); अभ्यपूजयत् (abhyapūjayat) - honored; (imperfect, 3rd person singular);]
(Ilvala, having known those kings who were together with great sages, but those who had arrived, together with the minister, at the end of the territory, honored.)
Ilvala, having recognized those kings along with the great sages who had assembled, together with his minister, honored them at the boundary of his territory. (03-97-1)
तेषां ततोऽसुरश्रेष्ठ आतिथ्यमकरोत्तदा। स संस्कृतेन कौरव्य भ्रात्रा वातापिना किल ॥०३-९७-२॥
teṣāṃ tato'suraśreṣṭha ātithyamakarottadā। sa saṃskṛtena kauravya bhrātrā vātāpinā kila ॥03-97-2॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; ततः (tataḥ) - then; असुरश्रेष्ठ (asuraśreṣṭha) - best of asuras; आतिथ्यम् (ātithyam) - hospitality; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; performed; तदा (tadā) - at that time; स (sa) - he; संस्कृतेन (saṃskṛtena) - with refinement; solemnly; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - with (his) brother; वातापिना (vātāpinā) - Vātāpi (name of his brother); किल (kila) - indeed;]
(Of them, then the best of asuras performed hospitality at that time; he, with refinement, O Kauravya, with (his) brother Vātāpi indeed.)
Then, O Kauravya, the best of asuras performed hospitality for them at that time, together with his brother Vātāpi, with due refinement indeed. (03-97-2)
ततो राजर्षयः सर्वे विषण्णा गतचेतसः। वातापिं संस्कृतं दृष्ट्वा मेषभूतं महासुरम् ॥०३-९७-३॥
tato rājarṣayaḥ sarve viṣaṇṇā gatacētasaḥ। vātāpiṁ saṁskṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā mēṣabhūtaṁ mahāsuram ॥03-97-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal seers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विषण्णा (viṣaṇṇā) - dejected; गतचेतसः (gatacētasaḥ) - with spirits gone; वातापिं (vātāpiṁ) - Vātāpi (proper name); संस्कृतं (saṁskṛtaṁ) - well-prepared; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मेषभूतं (mēṣabhūtaṁ) - become a ram; महासुरम् (mahāsuram) - the great asura (demon);]
(Then royal seers all dejected with spirits gone, Vātāpi well-prepared having seen, become a ram, the great asura.)
Then all the royal sages, disheartened and with spirits lost, saw Vātāpi—the great asura, prepared and transformed into a ram. (03-97-3)
अथाब्रवीदगस्त्यस्तान्राजर्षीनृषिसत्तमः। विषादो वो न कर्तव्यो अहं भोक्ष्ये महासुरम् ॥०३-९७-४॥
athābravīdagastyastānrājarṣīn ṛṣisattamaḥ। viṣādo vo na kartavyo ahaṃ bhokṣye mahāsuram ॥03-97-4॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; तान् (tān) - to them; राजर्षीन् (rājarṣīn) - royal sages; ऋषिसत्तमः (ṛṣisattamaḥ) - the foremost among sages; विषादः (viṣādaḥ) - despondency; वः (vaḥ) - of you; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - should be done; अहम् (aham) - I; भोक्ष्ये (bhokṣye) - shall eat; महासुरम् (mahāsuram) - the great demon;]
(Then said Agastya to them, the royal sages, the foremost among sages, "Despondency of you not should be done; I shall eat the great demon." (03-97-4))
Then Agastya, the foremost among sages, said to those royal sages, "You should not be despondent; I will eat the great demon." (03-97-4)
धुर्यासनमथासाद्य निषसाद महामुनिः। तं पर्यवेषद्दैत्येन्द्र इल्वलः प्रहसन्निव ॥०३-९७-५॥
dhuryāsanam athāsādya niṣasāda mahāmuniḥ। taṃ paryaveṣad daityendra ilvalaḥ prahasann iva ॥03-97-5॥
[धुर्यासनम् (dhuryāsanam) - special seat; अथ (atha) - then; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; निषसाद (niṣasāda) - sat down; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; तं (taṃ) - him; पर्यवेषत् (paryaveṣat) - served food; दैत्येन्द्र (daityendra) - king of the daityas; इल्वलः (ilvalaḥ) - Ilvala; प्रहसन्निव (prahasann iva) - as if smiling;]
(Then, having approached the special seat, the great sage sat down. Him the king of the daityas, Ilvala, served food, as if smiling.)
Then, having approached the special seat, the great sage sat down, and Ilvala, the king of the daityas, served him food with a seeming smile. (03-97-5)
अगस्त्य एव कृत्स्नं तु वातापिं बुभुजे ततः। भुक्तवत्यसुरोऽऽह्वानमकरोत्तस्य इल्वलः ॥०३-९७-६॥
agastya eva kṛtsnaṁ tu vātāpiṁ bubhuje tataḥ। bhuktavaty asuro''hvānam akaro ttasya ilvalaḥ॥03-97-6॥
[अगस्त्य (agastya) - Agastya; (proper noun); एव (eva) - indeed; only; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; whole; तु (tu) - but; वातापिं (vātāpiṁ) - Vātāpi; (proper noun, accusative); बुभुजे (bubhuje) - ate; consumed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; भुक्तवति (bhuktavati) - when (he) had eaten; after eating; (locative absolute); असुरः (asuraḥ) - the asura; demon; आह्वानम् (āhvānam) - calling; summoning; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; made; performed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; इल्वलः (ilvalaḥ) - Ilvala; (proper noun, nominative);]
(Agastya indeed the entire Vātāpi did eat; then, when (he) had eaten, the asura Ilvala did the summoning of him.)
Agastya himself ate all of Vātāpi; then, after he had eaten, the asura Ilvala attempted to call him forth. (03-97-6)
ततो वायुः प्रादुरभूदगस्त्यस्य महात्मनः। इल्वलश्च विषण्णोऽभूद्दृष्ट्वा जीर्णं महासुरम् ॥०३-९७-७॥
tato vāyuḥ prādurabhūd agastyasya mahātmanaḥ। ilvalaś ca viṣaṇṇo 'bhūd dṛṣṭvā jīrṇaṃ mahāsuram॥03-97-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; प्रादुरभूत् (prādurabhūt) - appeared; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; इल्वलश्च (ilvalaś ca) - and Ilvala; विषण्णः (viṣaṇṇaḥ) - dejected; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; जीर्णं (jīrṇam) - digested; महासुरम् (mahāsuram) - the great asura;]
(Then air appeared from Agastya, the great-souled; and Ilvala became dejected, having seen the digested great asura.)
Then the air (breath) emerged from the great sage Agastya, and Ilvala became dejected when he saw that the great asura had been digested. (03-97-7)
प्राञ्जलिश्च सहामात्यैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। किमर्थमुपयाताः स्थ ब्रूत किं करवाणि वः ॥०३-९७-८॥
prāñjaliś ca sahāmātyair idaṃ vacanam abravīt। kimartham upayātāḥ stha brūta kiṃ karavāṇi vaḥ॥03-97-8॥
[प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; च (ca) - and; सहामात्यैः (sahāmātyaiḥ) - with ministers; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; उपयाताः (upayātāḥ) - have come; स्थ (stha) - (you) are; ब्रूत (brūta) - speak; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(With folded hands and with ministers, he said this speech: For what reason have you come, are you? Speak; what shall I do for you?)
With folded hands, together with his ministers, he spoke these words: 'For what purpose have you come? Tell me—what can I do for you?' (03-97-8)
प्रत्युवाच ततोऽगस्त्यः प्रहसन्निल्वलं तदा। ईशं ह्यसुर विद्मस्त्वां वयं सर्वे धनेश्वरम् ॥०३-९७-९॥
pratyuvāca tato'gastyaḥ prahasan nilvalaṃ tadā। īśaṃ hy asura vidmas tvāṃ vayaṃ sarve dhaneśvaram ॥03-97-9॥
[प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; प्रहसन् (prahāsan) - smiling; निल्वलम् (nilvalam) - Nilvalam (Nilvala); तदा (tadā) - at that time; ईशम् (īśam) - lord; हि (hi) - indeed; असुर (asura) - asura; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - we know; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वयम् (vayam) - we; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धनेश्वरम् (dhaneśvaram) - lord of wealth;]
(Replied then Agastya, smiling at Nilvala at that time: "Lord indeed, asura, we know you, we all, lord of wealth." (03-97-9))
Then Agastya, smiling at Nilvala, replied at that time: "Indeed, asura, we all know you as the lord of wealth." (03-97-9)
इमे च नातिधनिनो धनार्थश्च महान्मम। यथाशक्त्यविहिंस्यान्यान्संविभागं प्रयच्छ नः ॥०३-९७-१०॥
ime ca nātidhanino dhanārthaś ca mahān mama। yathāśakty-avihiṁsy anyān saṁvibhāgaṁ prayaccha naḥ॥03-97-10॥
[इमे (ime) - these; च (ca) - and; नातिधनिनः (nātidhaninaḥ) - not very wealthy; धनार्थः (dhanārthaḥ) - seeking wealth; च (ca) - and; महान् (mahān) - great; मम (mama) - my; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - according to ability; अविहिंस्य (avihiṁsya) - without harming; आन्यान् (anyān) - others; संविभागं (saṁvibhāgaṁ) - share (distribution); प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - bestow; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(These and not very wealthy, seeking wealth and great (is) my (possession), as able, without harming others, share bestow to us.)
These here are not very wealthy and are seeking wealth; my wealth is great. As far as you can, without harming others, bestow a share to us. (03-97-10)
ततोऽभिवाद्य तमृषिमिल्वलो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। दित्सितं यदि वेत्सि त्वं ततो दास्यामि ते वसु ॥०३-९७-११॥
tato'bhivādya tam ṛṣiṁ ilvalo vākyam abravīt। ditsitaṁ yadi vetsi tvaṁ tato dāsyāmi te vasu॥03-97-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - the sage; इल्वलः (ilvalaḥ) - Ilvala; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; दित्सितम् (ditsitam) - intended to be given; यदि (yadi) - if; वेत्सि (vetsi) - you know; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; ते (te) - to you; वसु (vasu) - wealth;]
(Then, having saluted him, Ilvala spoke words to the sage: "If you know what is intended to be given, then I shall give wealth to you.")
Then, after saluting the sage, Ilvala spoke to him: "If you know what is to be given, then I will give you wealth." (03-97-11)
अगस्त्य उवाच॥

गवां दश सहस्राणि राज्ञामेकैकशोऽसुर। तावदेव सुवर्णस्य दित्सितं ते महासुर ॥०३-९७-१२॥
gavāṃ daśa sahasrāṇi rājñām ekaikaśo'sura। tāvad eva suvarṇasya ditsitaṃ te mahāsura ॥03-97-12॥
[गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; दश (daśa) - ten; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousand; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - each one separately; असुर (asura) - O Asura; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; एव (eva) - indeed; सुवर्णस्य (suvarṇasya) - of gold; दित्सितम् (ditsitam) - has been given; ते (te) - to you; महासुर (mahāsura) - O great Asura;]
(Of cows, ten thousand from the kings, to each one separately, O Asura; so much indeed of gold has been given to you, O great Asura.)
O Asura, from each one of the kings ten thousand cows and just as much gold have been given to you, O great Asura. (03-97-12)
मह्यं ततो वै द्विगुणं रथश्चैव हिरण्मयः। मनोजवौ वाजिनौ च दित्सितं ते महासुर ॥ जिज्ञास्यतां रथः सद्यो व्यक्तमेष हिरण्मयः ॥०३-९७-१३॥
mahyaṃ tato vai dviguṇaṃ rathaścaiva hiraṇmayaḥ। manojavau vājinau ca ditsitaṃ te mahāsura ॥ jijñāsyatāṃ rathaḥ sadyo vyaktameṣa hiraṇmayaḥ ॥03-97-13॥
[मह्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विगुणम् (dviguṇam) - double; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden; मनोजवौ (manojavau) - having the speed of the mind (dual); वाजिनौ (vājinau) - two horses; च (ca) - and; दित्सितम् (ditsitam) - given; ते (te) - by you; महासुर (mahāsura) - O great Asura; जिज्ञास्यताम् (jijñāsyatām) - let it be tested; रथः (rathaḥ) - the chariot; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly (or manifestly); एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden;]
(To me then indeed double (that), and a chariot also indeed golden, with two horses having the speed of the mind, and given by you, O great Asura. Let the chariot be tested immediately; this golden (chariot) is clearly (here). (03-97-13))
Therefore, a chariot made of gold—double in value—with two mind-speeding horses, has indeed been given to me by you, O great Asura. Let the chariot be tested at once; lo, this golden chariot is clearly here. (03-97-13)

जिज्ञास्यमानः स रथः कौन्तेयासीद्धिरण्मयः। ततः प्रव्यथितो दैत्यो ददावभ्यधिकं वसु ॥०३-९७-१४॥
jijñāsyamānaḥ sa rathaḥ kaunteya āsīdh hiraṇmayaḥ. tataḥ pravyathito daityo dadāv abhyadhikaṃ vasu॥03-97-14॥
[जिज्ञास्यमानः (jijñāsyamānaḥ) - being examined; स (sa) - that; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रव्यथितः (pravyathitaḥ) - distressed; दैत्यः (daityaḥ) - the Daitya (demon); ददौ (dadau) - gave; अभ्यधिकम् (abhyadhikam) - in excess; वसु (vasu) - wealth;]
(Being examined, that chariot, O Kaunteya, was golden. Then the distressed Daitya gave wealth in excess.)
O Kaunteya, when the golden chariot was being examined, then the distressed Daitya gave even more wealth. (03-97-14)
विवाजश्च सुवाजश्च तस्मिन्युक्तौ रथे हयौ। ऊहतुस्तौ वसून्याशु तान्यगस्त्याश्रमं प्रति ॥०३-९७-१५॥
vivājaś ca suvājaś ca tasmin yuktau rathe hayau। ūhatus tau vasūn yāśu tān agastya-āśramam prati ॥03-97-15॥
[विवाजः (vivājaḥ) - Vivāja (name of a horse); च (ca) - and; सुवाजः (suvājaḥ) - Suvāja (name of a horse); च (ca) - and; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युक्तौ (yuktau) - yoked; रथे (rathe) - to the chariot; हयौ (hayau) - the two horses; ऊहतुः (ūhatuḥ) - carried; तौ (tau) - those two; वसूनि (vasūni) - wealths; आशु (āśu) - quickly; तानि (tāni) - those; अगस्त्याश्रमं (agastya-āśramam) - Agastya's hermitage; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Vivāja and Suvāja and in that yoked to the chariot the two horses carried those wealths quickly those towards Agastya's hermitage.)
Vivāja and Suvāja, the two horses yoked to that chariot, swiftly carried the wealths to Agastya's hermitage. (03-97-15)
सर्वान्राज्ञः सहागस्त्यान्निमेषादिव भारत ॥०३-९७-१५॥
sarvān rājñaḥ saha-agastyāt nimeṣa-ādi iva bhārata ॥03-97-15॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (accusative, masculine, plural); राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - kings (accusative, masculine, plural); सह (saha) - together with; अगस्त्यात् (agastyāt) - with Agastya; निमेषादिव (nimeṣa-ādi iva) - as if in the time of a wink (very quickly); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata);]
(All the kings, together with Agastya, as if in the time of a wink, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, all the kings, along with Agastya, disappeared as though in the blink of an eye. (03-97-15)
अगस्त्येनाभ्यनुज्ञाता जग्मू राजर्षयस्तदा। कृतवांश्च मुनिः सर्वं लोपामुद्राचिकीर्षितम् ॥०३-९७-१६॥
agastyenābhyanujñātā jagmū rājarṣayas tadā। kṛtavāṃś ca muniḥ sarvaṃ lopāmudrācikīrṣitam ॥03-97-16॥
[अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; अभ्यनुज्ञाता (abhyanujñātāḥ) - having been permitted; जग्मू (jagmūḥ) - they went; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; तदा (tadā) - then; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - having done; च (ca) - and; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; लोपामुद्रा (lopāmudrā) - Lopamudra; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - desired to be done;]
(By Agastya having been permitted, the royal sages then went. And the sage having done all desired by Lopamudra.)
When permitted by Agastya, the royal sages departed; and the sage did everything desired by Lopamudra. (03-97-16)
लोपामुद्रोवाच॥
lopāmudrovāca॥
[लोपामुद्रा (lopāmudrā) - Lopamudra; (proper noun); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Lopamudra said;
कृतवानसि तत्सर्वं भगवन्मम काङ्क्षितम्। उत्पादय सकृन्मह्यमपत्यं वीर्यवत्तरम् ॥०३-९७-१७॥
kṛtavān asi tat sarvaṁ bhagavan mama kāṅkṣitam। utpādaya sakṛt mahyam apatyaṁ vīryavattaram॥03-97-17॥
[कृतवान् असि (kṛtavān asi) - you have done; you are; तत् सर्वम् (tat sarvam) - that all; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; मम (mama) - my; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; उत्पादय (utpādaya) - produce; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; महि्यम् (mahyam) - for me; अपत्यं (apatyam) - offspring; वीर्यवत्तरम् (vīryavattaram) - more mighty; ॥०३-९७-१७॥ (॥03-97-17॥) -;]
(You have done that all, O venerable one, my desired; produce once for me offspring more mighty.)
O venerable one, you have fulfilled all that I desired; now, produce for me once an offspring more mighty. (03-97-17)

तुष्टोऽहमस्मि कल्याणि तव वृत्तेन शोभने। विचारणामपत्ये तु तव वक्ष्यामि तां शृणु ॥०३-९७-१८॥
tuṣṭo'hamasmi kalyāṇi tava vṛttena śobhane. vicāraṇāmapatye tu tava vakṣyāmi tāṁ śṛṇu ॥03-97-18॥
[तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; satisfied; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - (am); कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; तव (tava) - your; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - by conduct; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one; विचारणाम् (vicāraṇām) - regarding enquiry; अपत्ये (apatye) - about offspring; तु (tu) - but; तव (tava) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will say; ताम् (tām) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Pleased am I, O auspicious one, by your conduct, O beautiful one. Regarding enquiry about offspring, however, to you I will say that; hear.)
O auspicious and beautiful lady, I am pleased with your conduct. But as for your enquiry about offspring, I will tell you about that—listen. (03-97-18)
सहस्रं तेऽस्तु पुत्राणां शतं वा दशसंमितम्। दश वा शततुल्याः स्युरेको वापि सहस्रवत् ॥०३-९७-१९॥
sahasraṃ te’stu putrāṇāṃ śataṃ vā daśa-saṃmitam। daśa vā śata-tulyāḥ syur-eko vā’pi sahasravat ॥03-97-19॥

(A thousand to you let there be of sons, a hundred or equal to ten. Ten or equal to a hundred may be, one even like a thousand.)
May you have a thousand sons, or a hundred, or those equal to ten. Or ten who are equal to a hundred, or even one who is like a thousand. (03-97-19)

sahasrasaṁmitaḥ putra eko me'stu tapodhana। eko hi bahubhiḥ śreyānvidvānsādhurasādhubhiḥ ॥03-97-20॥

(Equal to a thousand, a son—one—let there be for me, O possessor of austerity. One indeed is better than many, a wise (son), virtuous, than the unvirtuous.)
O possessor of austerity, let there be one son for me equal to a thousand. Indeed, one wise and virtuous son is better than many unvirtuous ones. (03-97-20)

sa tatheti pratijñāya tayā samabhavan muniḥ। samaye samaśīlinyā śraddhāvāñ chraddadhānayā॥03-97-21॥
[स (sa) - he; तथेति (tatheti) - so be it; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; तया (tayā) - by her; समभवन् (samabhavan) - together occurred, associated; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; समये (samaye) - at the (appointed) time; समशीलिन्या (samaśīlinyā) - with one of similar character; श्रद्धावान् (śraddhāvān) - faithful; श्रद्दधानया (śraddadhānayā) - with one endowed with faith;]
(He, so be it, having promised, by her, together (the sage) associated; at the time, with one of similar character, faithful, with one endowed with faith.)
He, having promised "so be it" to her, the sage associated with her—at the appointed time, with one who had similar character, faithful and endowed with faith. (03-97-21)
तत आधाय गर्भं तमगमद्वनमेव सः। तस्मिन्वनगते गर्भो ववृधे सप्त शारदान् ॥०३-९७-२२॥
tat ādhāya garbhaṃ tam agamad vanam eva saḥ। tasmin vanagate garbhaḥ vavṛdhe sapta śāradān ॥03-97-22॥
[तत (tat) - that; आधाय (ādhāya) - having taken; गर्भं (garbhaṃ) - embryo; तम् (tam) - that (him/her/it); अगमत् (agamad) - went; वनम् (vanam) - forest; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वनगते (vanagate) - having gone to the forest; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; सप्त (sapta) - seven; शारदान् (śāradān) - autumns (years);]
(That having taken embryo, that (one) went to the forest indeed he. In that, having gone to the forest, the embryo grew (for) seven autumns.)
Having conceived, she went to the forest. There, while she stayed in the forest, the embryo grew for seven years. (03-97-22)
सप्तमेऽब्दे गते चापि प्राच्यवत्स महाकविः। ज्वलन्निव प्रभावेन दृढस्युर्नाम भारत ॥ साङ्गोपनिषदान्वेदाञ्जपन्नेव महायशाः ॥०३-९७-२३॥
saptame'bde gate cāpi prācyavatsa mahākaviḥ। jvalanniva prabhāvena dṛḍhasyur nāma bhārata॥ sāṅgopaniṣadān vedāñ japanneva mahāyaśāḥ॥03-97-23॥
[सप्तमेऽब्दे (saptame abde) - in the seventh year; गते (gate) - having passed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्राच्यवत्स (prācyavatsa) - east-born (name of a sage); महाकविः (mahākaviḥ) - great poet; ज्वलन्निव (jvalan niva) - as if blazing; प्रभावेन (prabhāvena) - by brilliance; दृढस्युः (dṛḍhasyuḥ) - Dṛḍhasyu (proper name); नाम (nāma) - by name; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; साङ्गोपनिषदान् (sāṅgopaniṣadān) - with the Upaniṣads and limbs (ancillaries); वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; जपन् (japan) - reciting; इव (iva) - as if; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned;]
(In the seventh year having passed also, O Bhārata, the great poet Prācyavatsa, Dṛḍhasyu by name, as if blazing by brilliance, as if reciting the Vedas with the Upaniṣads and limbs, greatly renowned.)
After seven years had passed, O Bhārata, there was the great poet Prācyavat, named Dṛḍhasyu, who, shining forth with brilliance, was renowned as if reciting the Vedas along with all their limbs and Upaniṣads. (03-97-23)
तस्य पुत्रोऽभवदृषेः स तेजस्वी महानृषिः। स बाल एव तेजस्वी पितुस्तस्य निवेशने ॥ इध्मानां भारमाजह्रे इध्मवाहस्ततोऽभवत् ॥०३-९७-२४॥
tasya putro'bhavadṛṣeḥ sa tejasvī mahānṛṣiḥ। sa bāla eva tejasvī pitus tasya niveśane ॥ idhmānāṃ bhāram ājahre idhmavāhas tato'bhavat ॥03-97-24॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; स (sa) - he; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; स (sa) - he; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; एव (eva) - indeed; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; तस्य (tasya) - of him; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the dwelling; इध्मानाम् (idhmānām) - of firewood; भारम् (bhāram) - burden; आजह्रे (ājahre) - he brought; इध्मवाहः (idhmavāhaḥ) - carrier of firewood; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Of him, son became of the sage; he radiant great sage. He, child indeed radiant, of the father of him in the dwelling, of firewood the burden he brought; carrier of firewood from that became.)
His son was born of the sage; he was a radiant and great sage. Even as a child, he was radiant in his father's dwelling; he brought loads of firewood and thus became known as the carrier of firewood. (03-97-24)
तथायुक्तं च तं दृष्ट्वा मुमुदे स मुनिस्तदा। लेभिरे पितरश्चास्य लोकान्राजन्यथेप्सितान् ॥०३-९७-२५॥
tathāyuktaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā mumude sa munis tadā। lebhire pitaraś cāsya lokān rājann yathepsitān॥03-97-25॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; युक्तं (yuktaṁ) - endowed (with proper attributes); च (ca) - and; तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुमुदे (mumude) - rejoiced; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तदा (tadā) - then; लेभिरे (lebhire) - obtained; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; लोकान् (lokān) - the worlds; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथ (yath) - as; इप्सितान् (ipsitān) - desired;]
(Thus endowed and him having seen, rejoiced he the sage then. Obtained the ancestors also of him, the worlds, O king, as (they were) desired.)
Seeing him thus endowed, the sage then rejoiced. His ancestors, O king, attained the worlds as they wished. (03-97-25)
अगस्त्यस्याश्रमः ख्यातः सर्वर्तुकुसुमान्वितः। प्राह्रादिरेवं वातापिरगस्त्येन विनाशितः ॥०३-९७-२६॥
agastyasyāśramaḥ khyātaḥ sarvartukusumānvitaḥ। prāhrādir evaṃ vātāpir agastyena vināśitaḥ॥03-97-26॥
[अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - famous; सर्वर्तु (sarvartu) - in all seasons; कुसुम (kusuma) - flowers; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - possessed; प्राह्रादिः (prāhrādiḥ) - Prāhrādi (demon's group name); एवम् (evam) - thus; वातापिः (vātāpiḥ) - Vātāpi (proper name); अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; विनाशितः (vināśitaḥ) - destroyed;]
(The hermitage of Agastya, famous, possessed of flowers in all seasons. Prāhrādi, thus, Vātāpi, by Agastya, was destroyed.)
The hermitage of Agastya, renowned and adorned with flowers in all seasons. In this way, Vātāpi of the Prāhrādi clan was destroyed by Agastya. (03-97-26)
तस्यायमाश्रमो राजन्रमणीयो गुणैर्युतः। एषा भागीरथी पुण्या यथेष्टमवगाह्यताम् ॥०३-९७-२७॥
tasyāyamāśramo rājanramaṇīyo guṇairyutaḥ। eṣā bhāgīrathī puṇyā yatheṣṭamavagāhyatām॥03-97-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अयम् (ayam) - this; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रमणीयः (ramaṇīyaḥ) - pleasant; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with virtues; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; एषा (eṣā) - this; भागीरथी (bhāgīrathī) - Bhagirathi (Ganga); पुण्या (puṇyā) - holy; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; अवगाह्यताम् (avagāhyatām) - may be entered (for bathing);]
(Of him this hermitage, O king, pleasant, endowed with virtues. This Bhagirathi holy, as desired, may be entered for bathing.)
O king, this hermitage of him is pleasant and endowed with virtues. This holy Bhagirathi (Ganga) may be entered as you desire for bathing. (03-97-27)
