The gods said.
इतः प्रदानाद्वर्तन्ते प्रजाः सर्वाश्चतुर्विधाः। ता भाविता भावयन्ति हव्यकव्यैर्दिवौकसः ॥०३-१०१-१॥
itaḥ pradānād vartante prajāḥ sarvāś caturvidhāḥ. tā bhāvitā bhāvayanti havyakavyair divaukasaḥ ॥03-101-1॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from this; प्रदानात् (pradānāt) - from giving; वर्तन्ते (vartante) - arise; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; चतुर्विधाः (caturvidhāḥ) - four kinds; ता (tā) - they; भाविता (bhāvitā) - having been nourished; भावयन्ति (bhāvayanti) - nourish; हव्यकव्यैः (havyakavyaiḥ) - with oblations to gods and ancestors; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]
(From this giving, all creatures of four kinds arise. They, having been nourished, nourish the dwellers of heaven with oblations to gods and ancestors.)
From this act of giving, all four kinds of creatures arise; and, when nourished, they in turn nourish the dwellers of heaven through offerings to gods and ancestors. (03-101-1)
लोका ह्येवं वर्तयन्ति अन्योन्यं समुपाश्रिताः। त्वत्प्रसादान्निरुद्विग्नास्त्वयैव परिरक्षिताः ॥०३-१०१-२॥
lokā hyevaṃ vartayanti anyonyaṃ samupāśritāḥ। tvatprasādānnirudvignāstvayaiva parirakṣitāḥ॥03-101-2॥
[लोका (lokā) - people; हि (hi) - indeed; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; वर्तयन्ति (vartayanti) - conduct (themselves); अन्योन्यं (anyo-nyaṃ) - each other; समुपाश्रिताः (samupāśritāḥ) - mutually dependent; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favor; निरुद्विग्नाः (nirudvignāḥ) - free from anxiety; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; एव (eva) - alone; परिरक्षिताः (parirakṣitāḥ) - protected;]
(People indeed thus conduct (themselves), each other mutually dependent; by your favor (they are) free from anxiety, by you alone protected.)
People indeed live in this way, mutually dependent on each other; by your favor they are free from anxiety, and protected by you alone. (03-101-2)
इदं च समनुप्राप्तं लोकानां भयमुत्तमम्। न च जानीम केनेमे रात्रौ वध्यन्ति ब्राह्मणाः ॥०३-१०१-३॥
idaṃ ca samanuprāptaṃ lokānāṃ bhayam uttamam. na ca jānīma kene me rātrau vadhyanti brāhmaṇāḥ ॥03-101-3॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; समनुप्राप्तं (samanuprāptaṃ) - completely obtained; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds (people); भयम् (bhayam) - fear; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; जानीम (jānīma) - we know; केन (kena) - by whom; इमे (ime) - these; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; वध्यन्ति (vadhyanti) - are killed; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas (Brahmins);]
(This and also supreme fear of the peoples has completely arrived. And we do not know by whom these brāhmaṇas are killed at night.)
And this supreme fear has now come upon the worlds, and we do not know by whom these brāhmaṇas are being killed at night. (03-101-3)
क्षीणेषु च ब्राह्मणेषु पृथिवी क्षयमेष्यति। ततः पृथिव्यां क्षीणायां त्रिदिवं क्षयमेष्यति ॥०३-१०१-४॥
kṣīṇeṣu ca brāhmaṇeṣu pṛthivī kṣayameṣyati। tataḥ pṛthivyāṃ kṣīṇāyāṃ tridivaṃ kṣayameṣyati ॥03-101-4॥
[क्षीणेषु (kṣīṇeṣu) - waning; diminished; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brāhmaṇas; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; decay; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will reach; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; क्षीणायां (kṣīṇāyām) - waned; diminished; त्रिदिवं (tridivam) - heaven; the threefold heaven; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; decay; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will reach;]
(When diminished indeed among Brāhmaṇas, the earth will reach destruction. Then, when the earth is diminished, heaven will reach destruction (03-101-4))
When virtue among Brāhmaṇas declines, the earth will suffer destruction; then, when the earth is destroyed, heaven itself will suffer decay. (03-101-4)
त्वत्प्रसादान्महाबाहो लोकाः सर्वे जगत्पते। विनाशं नाधिगच्छेयुस्त्वया वै परिरक्षिताः ॥०३-१०१-५॥
tvatprasādān mahābāho lokāḥ sarve jagatpate. vināśaṃ nādhigaccheyuḥ tvayā vai parirakṣitāḥ ॥03-101-5॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - by you; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favor; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; सर्वे (sarve) - all; जगत्पते (jagatpate) - O lord of the universe; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छेयुः (adhigaccheyuḥ) - may attain; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वै (vai) - indeed; परिरक्षिताः (parirakṣitāḥ) - protected;]
(By your favor, O mighty-armed, all worlds, O lord of the universe, may not attain destruction, being indeed protected by you.)
O mighty-armed, by your favor, O lord of the universe, all the worlds, being protected by you, would indeed not meet destruction. (03-101-5)

विदितं मे सुराः सर्वं प्रजानां क्षयकारणम्। भवतां चापि वक्ष्यामि शृणुध्वं विगतज्वराः ॥०३-१०१-६॥
viditaṃ me surāḥ sarvaṃ prajānāṃ kṣayakāraṇam। bhavatāṃ cāpi vakṣyāmi śṛṇudhvaṃ vigatajvarāḥ ॥03-101-6॥
[विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; मे (me) - to me; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; प्रजानां (prajānāṃ) - of beings; क्षयकारणम् (kṣayakāraṇam) - cause of destruction; भवतां (bhavatām) - to you (plural); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; शृणुध्वं (śṛṇudhvaṃ) - listen (you all); विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from fever (anxiety);]
(Known to me, O gods, is all the cause of destruction of beings; to you also I shall say; listen, free from fever.)
O gods, I know all the causes of destruction of beings; I will tell you, too. Listen, free from anxiety. (03-101-6)
कालेय इति विख्यातो गणः परमदारुणः। तैश्च वृत्रं समाश्रित्य जगत्सर्वं प्रबाधितम् ॥०३-१०१-७॥
kāleya iti vikhyāto gaṇaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ. taiś ca vṛtraṃ samāśritya jagat sarvaṃ prabādhitam ॥03-101-7॥
[कालेय (kāleya) - descendant of Kāli; इति (iti) - thus; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - renowned; गणः (gaṇaḥ) - group; परमदारुणः (paramadāruṇaḥ) - extremely terrible; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vṛtra; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - having taken refuge with; जगत् (jagat) - the world; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रबाधितम् (prabādhitam) - afflicted;]
(The group known as Kāleya, extremely terrible, having taken refuge with Vṛtra, afflicted all the world.)
The group known as Kāleya, exceedingly fierce, sought refuge with Vṛtra and, by them, the entire world was afflicted. (03-101-7)
ते वृत्रं निहतं दृष्ट्वा सहस्राक्षेण धीमता। जीवितं परिरक्षन्तः प्रविष्टा वरुणालयम् ॥०३-१०१-८॥
te vṛtraṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā sahasrākṣeṇa dhīmatā। jīvitaṃ parirakṣantaḥ praviṣṭā varuṇālayam ॥03-101-8॥
[ते (te) - they; वृत्रं (vṛtram) - Vṛtra (a demon); निहतं (nihatam) - slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहस्राक्षेण (sahasrākṣeṇa) - by Sahasrākṣa (the thousand-eyed one, Indra); धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; जीवितं (jīvitam) - life; परिरक्षन्तः (parirakṣantaḥ) - protecting; प्रविष्टा (praviṣṭā) - having entered; वरुणालयम् (varuṇālayam) - the abode of Varuṇa;]
(They, Vṛtra slain having seen by Sahasrākṣa, the wise, life protecting, having entered the abode of Varuṇa.)
Having seen Vṛtra slain by the wise, thousand-eyed Indra, they protected their lives and entered the abode of Varuṇa. (03-101-8)
ते प्रविश्योदधिं घोरं नक्रग्राहसमाकुलम्। उत्सादनार्थं लोकानां रात्रौ घ्नन्ति मुनीनिह ॥०३-१०१-९॥
te praviśyodadhiṃ ghoraṃ nakragrāhasamākulam। utsādanārthaṃ lokānāṃ rātrau ghnanti munīn iha ॥03-101-9॥
[ते (te) - they; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; उदधिं (udadhiṃ) - the ocean (accusative singular); घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; नक्रग्राह (nakragrāha) - of crocodiles and aquatic monsters; समाकुलम् (samākulam) - filled with; उत्सादनार्थं (utsādanārtham) - for the destruction; लोकानां (lokānām) - of the worlds (people); रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; घ्नन्ति (ghnanti) - they kill; मुनीनिह (munīn iha) - sages here;]
(They, having entered the terrible ocean filled with crocodiles and aquatic monsters, for the destruction of the worlds, at night kill sages here.)

न तु शक्याः क्षयं नेतुं समुद्राश्रयगा हि ते। समुद्रस्य क्षये बुद्धिर्भवद्भिः सम्प्रधार्यताम् ॥ अगस्त्येन विना को हि शक्तोऽन्योऽर्णवशोषणे ॥०३-१०१-१०॥
na tu śakyāḥ kṣayaṃ netuṃ samudrāśrayagā hi te। samudrasya kṣaye buddhir bhavadbhiḥ sampradhāryatām॥ agastyena vinā ko hi śakto'nyo'rṇavaśoṣaṇe॥03-101-10॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - capable (of being); क्षयं (kṣayam) - destruction; नेतुं (netum) - to bring; समुद्राश्रयगा (samudrāśrayagā) - residing in the ocean; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; क्षये (kṣaye) - in the destruction; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intelligence; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (plural); सम्प्रधार्यताम् (sampradhāryatām) - let it be considered; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; विना (vinā) - without; कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; अर्णवशोषणे (arṇavaśoṣaṇe) - in drying the ocean;]
(But not capable of destruction to bring are those residing in the ocean indeed they. Of the ocean in the destruction intelligence by you let it be considered. Without Agastya, who indeed is another capable in drying the ocean? (03-101-10))
But those residing in the ocean cannot be destroyed; your wisdom should consider the destruction of the ocean. Except for Agastya, who else indeed is capable of drying up the ocean? (03-101-10)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो देवा विष्णुना समुदाहृतम्। परमेष्ठिनमाज्ञाप्य अगस्त्यस्याश्रमं ययुः ॥०३-१०१-११॥
etat śrutvā vaco devā viṣṇunā samudāhṛtam। parameṣṭhinam ājñāpya agastyasya āśramam yayuḥ॥03-101-11॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; समुदाहृतम् (samudāhṛtam) - spoken out; परमेष्ठिनम् (parameṣṭhinam) - the lord of creation (Brahmā); आज्ञाप्य (ājñāpya) - having been instructed; अगस्त्यस्य (agastyasya) - of Agastya; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; ययुः (yayuḥ) - they went;]
(This having heard speech the gods by Viṣṇu spoken, the lord of creation having been instructed, to Agastya's hermitage they went.)
Having heard these words spoken by Viṣṇu, and having been instructed by the lord of creation, the gods went to the hermitage of Agastya. (03-101-11)
तत्रापश्यन्महात्मानं वारुणिं दीप्ततेजसम्। उपास्यमानमृषिभिर्देवैरिव पितामहम् ॥०३-१०१-१२॥
tatrāpaśyanmahātmānaṁ vāruṇiṁ dīptatejasam। upāsyamānamṛṣibhirdevairiva pitāmaham॥03-101-12॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; वारुणिं (vāruṇim) - son of Varuṇa; दीप्ततेजसम् (dīptatejasam) - with blazing splendor; उपास्यमानम् (upāsyamānam) - being worshipped; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by gods; इव (iva) - like; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire (Brahmā);]
(There he saw the great-souled son of Varuṇa with blazing splendor, being worshipped by sages, by gods, like the grandsire.)

(Those, having approached the great-souled, the descendant of Mitra and Varuṇa, the infallible, residing in the hermitage, the treasure of austerity, with their own acts, praised.)

नहुषेणाभितप्तानां त्वं लोकानां गतिः पुरा। भ्रंशितश्च सुरैश्वर्याल्लोकार्थं लोककण्टकः ॥०३-१०१-१४॥
nahuṣeṇābhitaptānāṃ tvaṃ lokānāṃ gatiḥ purā। bhraṃśitaś ca suraiśvaryāl lokārthaṃ loka-kaṇṭakaḥ ॥03-101-14॥
[नहुषेणाभितप्तानां (nahuṣeṇa-abhi-taptānāṃ) - by Nahusha (king)-greatly afflicted (of); त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; लोकानां (lokānāṃ) - of the worlds; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; पुरा (purā) - formerly; भ्रंशितः (bhraṃśitaḥ) - fallen; च (ca) - and; सुरैश्वर्यात् (suraiśvaryāt) - from divine sovereignty; लोकार्थं (lokārtham) - for the sake of the worlds; लोककण्टकः (loka-kaṇṭakaḥ) - tormentor of the worlds;]
(You, the refuge of the worlds formerly afflicted by Nahusha, (are) fallen from the sovereignty of the gods and (became) the tormentor of the worlds for the sake of the worlds.)
You were once the refuge of all the worlds afflicted by Nahusha; and, for the sake of the worlds, you fell from divine sovereignty, becoming the tormentor of the worlds. (03-101-14)
क्रोधात्प्रवृद्धः सहसा भास्करस्य नगोत्तमः। वचस्तवानतिक्रामन्विन्ध्यः शैलो न वर्धते ॥०३-१०१-१५॥
krodhātpravṛddhaḥ sahasā bhāskarasya nagottamaḥ। vacastavānatikrāmanvindhyaḥ śailo na vardhate॥03-101-15॥
[क्रोधात् (krodhāt) (krodhāt) - from anger; प्रवृद्धः (pravṛddhaḥ) (pravṛddhaḥ) - grown; increased; सहसा (sahasā) (sahasā) - suddenly; भास्करस्य (bhāskarasya) (bhāskarasya) - of Bhāskara (the Sun); नगोत्तमः (nagottamaḥ) (nagottamaḥ) - the greatest of mountains; वचः (vacaḥ) (vacaḥ) - word; तव (tava) (tava) - your; अनतिक्रामन् (anatikrāman) (anatikrāman) - not transgressing; विन्ध्यः (vindhyaḥ) (vindhyaḥ) - Vindhya; शैलः (śailaḥ) (śailaḥ) - mountain; न (na) (na) - not; वर्धते (vardhate) (vardhate) - grows;]
(From anger grown, suddenly, of Bhāskara the greatest of mountains, your word not transgressing, Vindhya mountain does not grow.)
The great Vindhya mountain, having grown out of anger and suddenly, at the word of Bhāskara (the Sun), not transgressing your command, does not grow. (03-101-15)
तमसा चावृते लोके मृत्युनाभ्यर्दिताः प्रजाः। त्वामेव नाथमासाद्य निर्वृतिं परमां गताः ॥०३-१०१-१६॥
tamasā cāvṛte loke mṛtyunābhyarditāḥ prajāḥ। tvām eva nātham āsādya nirvṛtiṃ paramāṃ gatāḥ॥03-101-16॥
[तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; च (ca) - and; आवृते (āvṛte) - enveloped; लोके (loke) - in the world; मृत्युना (mṛtyunā) - by death; अभ्यर्दिताः (abhyarditāḥ) - afflicted; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - beings; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एव (eva) - only; नाथम् (nātham) - protector; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; निर्वृतिम् (nirvṛtim) - peace; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; गताः (gatāḥ) - obtained;]
(By darkness and enveloped world beings by death afflicted; you only protector having approached peace supreme obtained.)
In a world enveloped by darkness and afflicted by death, the beings, having approached you alone as protector, attained supreme peace. (03-101-16)
अस्माकं भयभीतानां नित्यशो भगवान्गतिः। ततस्त्वार्ताः प्रयाचामस्त्वां वरं वरदो ह्यसि ॥०३-१०१-१७॥
asmākaṃ bhayabhītānāṃ nityaśo bhagavān gatiḥ। tataḥ tvām ārtāḥ prayācāmaḥ tvām varaṃ varadaḥ hi asi ॥03-101-17॥
[अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - of us; भयभीतानां (bhayabhītānām) - of those who are terrified by fear; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O Lord; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; आर्ताः (ārtāḥ) - distressed ones; प्रयाचामः (prayācāmaḥ) - we request; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वरम् (varam) - a boon; वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - are;]
(Of us terrified by fear, always O Lord, (you are the) refuge. Therefore, we distressed ones request you a boon; (for) you indeed are (the) bestower of boons (03-101-17).)
O Lord, you are always the refuge of us who are terrified by fear. Therefore, we who are distressed request a boon from you, for you are indeed the bestower of boons (03-101-17).
