भगीरथवचः श्रुत्वा प्रियार्थं च दिवौकसाम्। एवमस्त्विति राजानं भगवान्प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-१०८-१॥
bhagīrathavacaḥ śrutvā priyārthaṃ ca divaukasām। evam astv iti rājānaṃ bhagavān pratyabhāṣata ॥03-108-1॥
[भगीरथवचः (bhagīrathavacaḥ) - the words of Bhagiratha; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रियार्थं (priyārtham) - for the sake of (what is) pleasing; च (ca) - and; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven; एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - so (thus said); राजानं (rājānam) - to the king; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed (said in reply);]
(Having heard the words of Bhagiratha and (that which was) for the sake of pleasing the dwellers of heaven, the venerable one addressed the king, saying "Let it be thus.")
Having listened to Bhagiratha's words done to please the residents of heaven, the venerable one replied to the king, saying, "Let it be so." (03-108-1)
धारयिष्ये महाबाहो गगनात्प्रच्युतां शिवाम्। दिव्यां देवनदीं पुण्यां त्वत्कृते नृपसत्तम ॥०३-१०८-२॥
dhārayiṣye mahābāho gaganāt pracyutāṃ śivām। divyāṃ devanadīṃ puṇyāṃ tvatkṛte nṛpasattama ॥03-108-2॥
[धारयिष्ये (dhārayiṣye) - I shall bear; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; प्रच्युतां (pracyutām) - fallen; शिवाम् (śivām) - auspicious; दिव्यां (divyāṃ) - divine; देवनदीं (devanadīṃ) - river of the gods; पुण्यां (puṇyāṃ) - holy; त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(I shall bear, O mighty-armed one, the auspicious river of the gods, holy and divine, fallen from the sky, for your sake, O best of kings.)
O mighty-armed one, for your sake, O best of kings, I shall bear the auspicious, divine, holy river of the gods fallen from the sky. (03-108-2)
एवमुक्त्वा महाबाहो हिमवन्तमुपागमत्। संवृतः पार्षदैर्घोरैर्नानाप्रहरणोद्यतैः ॥०३-१०८-३॥
evam-uktvā mahā-bāho himavantam upāgamat। saṃvṛtaḥ pārṣadaiḥ ghoraiḥ nānā-praharaṇa-udyataiḥ ॥03-108-3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महाबाहो (mahā-bāho) - O mighty-armed; हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat (the Himalaya mountain); उपागमत् (upāgamat) - he approached; संवृतः (saṃvṛtaḥ) - surrounded; पार्षदैः (pārṣadaiḥ) - by attendants; घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - terrible; नाना-प्रहरण-उद्यतैः (nānā-praharaṇa-udyataiḥ) - equipped with various weapons;]
(Thus having spoken, O mighty-armed, he approached Himavat, surrounded by attendants, terrible, equipped with various weapons.)
Having thus spoken, O mighty-armed one, he went to the Himalaya mountain, surrounded by his fierce attendants ready with various weapons. (03-108-3)
ततः स्थित्वा नरश्रेष्ठं भगीरथमुवाच ह। प्रयाचस्व महाबाहो शैलराजसुतां नदीम् ॥ पतमानां सरिच्छ्रेष्ठां धारयिष्ये त्रिविष्टपात् ॥०३-१०८-४॥
tataḥ sthitvā naraśreṣṭhaṁ bhagīratham uvāca ha। prayācasva mahābāho śailarājasutāṁ nadīm ॥ patamānāṁ saricchreṣṭhāṁ dhārayiṣye triviṣṭapāt ॥03-108-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्थित्वा (sthitvā) - having stood; नरश्रेष्ठम् (naraśreṣṭham) - best of men; भगीरथम् (bhagīratham) - Bhagiratha; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; प्रयाचस्व (prayācasva) - request; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; शैलराजसुताम् (śailarājasutām) - daughter of the king of mountains; नदीम् (nadīm) - river; पतमानाम् (patamānām) - falling; सरिच्छ्रेष्ठाम् (saricchreṣṭhām) - best of rivers; धारयिष्ये (dhārayiṣye) - I shall hold; त्रिविष्टपात् (triviṣṭapāt) - from heaven;]
(Then, having stood, to the best of men, to Bhagiratha, said indeed: "Request, O mighty-armed one, the daughter of the king of mountains, the river. Falling, the best of rivers, I shall hold from heaven." (03-108-4))
Then, standing there, he said to Bhagiratha, the best of men: "O mighty-armed one, request the daughter of the king of mountains, the river. As she falls, the best of rivers, I shall support her from heaven." (03-108-4)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो राजा शर्वेण समुदाहृतम्। प्रयतः प्रणतो भूत्वा गङ्गां समनुचिन्तयत् ॥०३-१०८-५॥
etac chrutvā vaco rājā śarveṇa samudāhṛtam। prayataḥ praṇato bhūtvā gaṅgāṃ samanucintayat॥03-108-5॥

Having heard this speech expressed by Śarva, the king, after purifying himself and bowing, deeply contemplated upon Ganga. (03-108-5)
ततः पुण्यजला रम्या राज्ञा समनुचिन्तिता। ईशानं च स्थितं दृष्ट्वा गगनात्सहसा च्युता ॥०३-१०८-६॥
tataḥ puṇya-jalā ramyā rājñā samanucintitā। īśānaṃ ca sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā gaganāt sahasā cyutā ॥03-108-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुण्यजला (puṇya-jalā) - having auspicious waters; रम्या (ramyā) - beautiful; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; समनुचिन्तिता (samanucintitā) - completely contemplated; ईशानं (īśānam) - Ishana (the lord); च (ca) - and; स्थितं (sthitaṃ) - standing; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; च्युता (cyutā) - fallen;]
(Then the beautiful sacred-water, thoroughly considered by the king, and having seen Ishana standing, suddenly fell from the sky.)
Then, after the king deeply contemplated, the beautiful sacred water, seeing Ishana standing, suddenly fell from the sky. (03-108-6)
तां प्रच्युतां ततो दृष्ट्वा देवाः सार्धं महर्षिभिः। गन्धर्वोरगरक्षांसि समाजग्मुर्दिदृक्षया ॥०३-१०८-७॥
tāṃ pracyutāṃ tato dṛṣṭvā devāḥ sārdhaṃ maharṣibhiḥ. gandharvoragarakṣāṃsi samājagmur didṛkṣayā ॥03-108-7॥

Seeing her fall, the gods, along with the great sages, gandharvas, serpents, and rākṣasas, all assembled out of curiosity to witness (the event). (03-108-7)
ततः पपात गगनाद्गङ्गा हिमवतः सुता। समुद्भ्रान्तमहावर्ता मीनग्राहसमाकुला ॥०३-१०८-८॥
tataḥ papāta gaganādgāṅgā himavataḥ sutā। samudbhrāntamahāvartā mīnagrāhasamākulā ॥03-108-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पपात (papāta) - fell; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat; सुता (sutā) - daughter; समुद्भ्रान्तमहावर्ता (samudbhrāntamahāvartā) - with greatly agitated whirlpools; मीनग्राहसमाकुला (mīnagrāhasamākulā) - teeming with fish and crocodiles;]
(Then fell from the sky Gaṅgā, Himavat's daughter, with greatly agitated whirlpools, teeming with fish and crocodiles.)
Then, Gaṅgā, the daughter of Himavat, fell from the sky, filled with great agitated whirlpools and teeming with fish and crocodiles. (03-108-8)
तां दधार हरो राजन्गङ्गां गगनमेखलाम्। ललाटदेशे पतितां मालां मुक्तामयीमिव ॥०३-१०८-९॥
tāṃ dadhāra haro rājan gaṅgāṃ gaganamekhalām। lalāṭadeśe patitāṃ mālāṃ muktāmayīm iva ॥03-108-9॥
[तां (tām) - her; दधार (dadhāra) - held; हरः (haraḥ) - Hara (Śiva); राजन् (rājan) - O king; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; गगनमेखलाम् (gaganamekhalām) - sky-girdle; ललाटदेशे (lalāṭadeśe) - on forehead-region; पतिताम् (patitām) - fallen; मालाम् (mālām) - garland; मुक्तामयीम् (muktāmayīm) - made of pearls; इव (iva) - like;]
(Her Hara held, O king, Ganga, sky-girdle, on the forehead-region, fallen garland made of pearls like.)
O King, Hara (Śiva) held her—Ganga, the sky-girdle—on his forehead, fallen like a garland made of pearls. (03-108-9)
सा बभूव विसर्पन्ती त्रिधा राजन्समुद्रगा। फेनपुञ्जाकुलजला हंसानामिव पङ्क्तयः ॥०३-१०८-१०॥
sā babhūva visarpantī tridhā rājan-samudragā। phenapuñjākulajalā haṃsānām iva paṅktayaḥ ॥03-108-10॥
[सा (sā) - she; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विसर्पन्ती (visarpantī) - spreading out; त्रिधा (tridhā) - in three ways; राजन् (rājan) - O King; समुद्रगा (samudragā) - going to the ocean; फेनपुञ्जाकुलजला (phenapuñjākulajalā) - with water teeming with masses of foam; हंसानाम् (haṃsānām) - of swans; इव (iva) - like; पङ्क्तयः (paṅktayaḥ) - rows;]
(She became spreading out in three ways, O King, going to the ocean, with water teeming with masses of foam; like rows of swans.)
She, O King, flowed in three branching streams towards the ocean, her waters filled with masses of foam, resembling rows of swans. (03-108-10)
क्वचिदाभोगकुटिला प्रस्खलन्ती क्वचित्क्वचित्। स्वफेनपटसंवीता मत्तेव प्रमदाव्रजत् ॥ क्वचित्सा तोयनिनदैर्नदन्ती नादमुत्तमम् ॥०३-१०८-११॥
kvacid-ābhoga-kuṭilā praskhalantī kvacit kvacit। sva-phena-paṭa-saṃvītā matteva pramadā vrajat॥ kvacit sā toya-ninadaiḥ nadantī nādam uttamam॥ 03-108-11॥
[क्वचित् (kvacit) - at some places; आभोगकुटिला (ābhoga-kuṭilā) - curved by windings; प्रस्खलन्ती (praskhalantī) - stumbling; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at some places; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at some places; स्व (sva) - her own; फेन (phena) - foam; पट (paṭa) - cloth; संवीता (saṃvītā) - enveloped; मत्ता (mattā) - intoxicated; इव (iva) - like; प्रमदा (pramadā) - woman; व्रजत् (vrajat) - moving; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at some place; सा (sā) - she; तोय (toya) - water; निनदैः (ninadaiḥ) - with sounds; नदन्ती (nadantī) - roaring; नादम् (nādaṃ) - sound; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(At some places, curved by windings, stumbling at some, at some places enveloped by her own foam-cloth, moving like an intoxicated woman. At some place, she, with the sounds of waters, roaring, makes an excellent sound.)
At places, she winds about in curves, stumbling here and there, clothed in her own foam like an intoxicated woman wandering about. Sometimes, she roars with the sounds of the waters, producing a superb sound. (03-108-11)
एवं प्रकारान्सुबहून्कुर्वन्ती गगनाच्च्युता। पृथिवीतलमासाद्य भगीरथमथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१०८-१२॥
evaṃ prakārān subahūn kurvantī gaganāc chyutā। pṛthivī-talam āsādya bhagīratham athābravīt ॥03-108-12॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this manner; प्रकारान् (prakārān) - forms; varieties; ways; सुबहून् (subahūn) - very many; numerous; कुर्वन्ती (kurvantī) - doing; making (feminine, singular, present participle); गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; च्युता (chyutā) - fallen; having descended (feminine); पृथिवीतलम् (pṛthivī-talam) - earth-surface; ground; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; after reaching; भगीरथम् (bhagīratham) - Bhagīratha (proper noun, name); अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke;]
(Thus, making very many forms, having fallen from the sky, after reaching the earth's surface, to Bhagīratha then she spoke.)
Thus, after taking many forms and falling from the sky, upon reaching the earth's surface, she then spoke to Bhagīratha. (03-108-12)
दर्शयस्व महाराज मार्गं केन व्रजाम्यहम्। त्वदर्थमवतीर्णास्मि पृथिवीं पृथिवीपते ॥०३-१०८-१३॥
darśayasva mahārāja mārgaṃ kena vrajāmyaham। tvadartham avatīrṇāsmi pṛthivīṃ pṛthivīpate॥03-108-13॥

(Show, O great king, the path by which I go. For your sake I have descended to the earth, O lord of the earth.)
O great king, show me the path by which I should go. For your sake I have come down to earth, O lord of the earth. (03-108-13)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो राजा प्रातिष्ठत भगीरथः। यत्र तानि शरीराणि सागराणां महात्मनाम् ॥०३-१०८-१४॥
etat śrutvā vaco rājā prātiṣṭhata bhagīrathaḥ। yatra tāni śarīrāṇi sāgarāṇām mahātmanām ॥03-108-14॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - set forth; भगीरथः (bhagīrathaḥ) - Bhagīratha; यत्र (yatra) - where; तानि (tāni) - those; शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; सागराणाम् (sāgarāṇām) - of the Sagaras; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled;]
(This having heard, speech, king, set forth, Bhagīratha, where those bodies of the Sagaras, of the great-souled.)
Having heard these words, King Bhagīratha set forth to where the bodies of the great-souled sons of Sagara lay. (03-108-14)
पावनार्थं नरश्रेष्ठ पुण्येन सलिलेन ह ॥०३-१०८-१४॥
pāvanārthaṃ naraśreṣṭha puṇyena salilena ha ॥03-108-14॥
[पावनार्थं (pāvanārtham) - for the purpose of purification; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - with meritorious; सलिलेन (salilena) - with water; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(For the purpose of purification, O best of men, with meritorious water indeed.)
O best of men, indeed, for the purpose of purification, with meritorious water. (03-108-14)
गङ्गाया धारणं कृत्वा हरो लोकनमस्कृतः। कैलासं पर्वतश्रेष्ठं जगाम त्रिदशैः सह ॥०३-१०८-१५॥
gaṅgāyā dhāraṇaṃ kṛtvā haro lokanamaskṛtaḥ. kailāsaṃ parvatśreṣṭhaṃ jagāma tridaśaiḥ saha ॥03-108-15॥
[गङ्गाया (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; धारणं (dhāraṇam) - holding; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; हरः (haraḥ) - Hara; लोकनमस्कृतः (loka-namaskṛtaḥ) - worshipped by the worlds; कैलासं (kailāsam) - Kailāsa; पर्वतश्रेष्ठं (parvata-śreṣṭham) - the best of mountains; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together with;]
(Having held Gaṅgā, Hara, worshipped by the worlds, went to Kailāsa, the best of mountains, together with the gods.)
After bearing Gaṅgā, Hara, honored by the worlds, went with the gods to Mount Kailāsa, the foremost of mountains. (03-108-15)
समुद्रं च समासाद्य गङ्गया सहितो नृपः। पूरयामास वेगेन समुद्रं वरुणालयम् ॥०३-१०८-१६॥
samudraṁ ca samāsādya gaṅgayā sahito nṛpaḥ। pūrayāmāsa vegena samudraṁ varuṇālayam ॥03-108-16॥
[समुद्रं (samudraṁ) - ocean; च (ca) - and; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; गङ्गया (gaṅgayā) - with Gaṅgā; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; पूरयामास (pūrayāmāsa) - caused to fill; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; समुद्रं (samudraṁ) - ocean; वरुणालयम् (varuṇālayam) - Varuṇa's abode;]
(The ocean and having reached, with Gaṅgā accompanied the king caused to fill with speed the ocean, Varuṇa's abode.)
And the king, accompanied by Gaṅgā, upon reaching the ocean, swiftly caused the ocean—the abode of Varuṇa—to be filled. (03-108-16)
दुहितृत्वे च नृपतिर्गङ्गां समनुकल्पयत्। पितॄणां चोदकं तत्र ददौ पूर्णमनोरथः ॥०३-१०८-१७॥
duhitṛtve ca nṛpatir gaṅgāṃ samanukalpayat। pitṝṇāṃ codakaṃ tatra dadau pūrṇamanorathaḥ॥03-108-17॥
[दुहितृत्वे (duhitṛtve) - in the role of a daughter; च (ca) - and; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - (the river) Gaṅgā; समनुकल्पयत् (samanukalpayat) - considered as; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - for the ancestors; च (ca) - and; उदकम् (udakam) - water; तत्र (tatra) - there; ददौ (dadau) - offered; पूर्णमनोरथः (pūrṇamanorathaḥ) - whose wish was fulfilled;]
(And the king considered Gaṅgā in the role of a daughter. For the ancestors also, water there he offered, whose wish was fulfilled.)
The king regarded Gaṅgā as his daughter, and being fully satisfied in his desire, he offered water there to his ancestors. (03-108-17)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं गङ्गा त्रिपथगा यथा। पूरणार्थं समुद्रस्य पृथिवीमवतारिता ॥०३-१०८-१८॥
etatte sarvam ākhyātaṃ gaṅgā tripathagā yathā। pūraṇārthaṃ samudrasya pṛthivīm avatāritā॥03-108-18॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; त्रिपथगा (tripathagā) - the one who moves along three paths; यथा (yathā) - as; पूरणार्थम् (pūraṇārtham) - for the purpose of filling; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - to the earth; अवतारिता (avatāritā) - has been brought down;]
(This to you all has been told, Gaṅgā, the one who moves along three paths, as for the purpose of filling of the ocean to the earth has been brought down.)
All this has now been told to you—how Gaṅgā, the river flowing along three paths, was brought down to earth for the purpose of filling the ocean. (03-108-18)
समुद्रश्च यथा पीतः कारणार्थे महात्मना। वातापिश्च यथा नीतः क्षयं स ब्रह्महा प्रभो ॥०३-१०८-१९॥
samudraś ca yathā pītaḥ kāraṇārthe mahātmanā। vātāpiś ca yathā nītaḥ kṣayaṃ sa brahmahā prabho ॥03-108-19॥
[समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; पीतः (pītaḥ) - was drunk; कारणार्थे (kāraṇārthe) - for the sake of a reason; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great souled one; वातापिः (vātāpiḥ) - Vātāpi; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; नीतः (nītaḥ) - was led; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - to destruction; स (sa) - he; ब्रह्महा (brahmahā) - slayer of a Brāhmaṇa; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(The ocean and just as was drunk for the sake of a reason by the great souled one, and Vātāpi just as was led to destruction, he, the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, O lord.)
Just as the ocean was drunk by the great-souled one for a purpose, and as Vātāpi was destroyed, so too, O lord, was the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa annihilated. (03-108-19)
अगस्त्येन महाराज यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥०३-१०८-१९॥
agastyeṇa mahārāja yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥03-108-19॥
