tataḥ prayātaḥ kaunteyaḥ krameṇa bharatarṣabha। nandām aparanandāṃ ca nad yau pāpabhayāpah e ॥03-109-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - Kunti’s son; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - best of the Bharatas; नन्दाम् (nandām) - Nandā (river); अपरनन्दाम् (aparanandām) - Aparanandā (another river); च (ca) - and; नद्यौ (nadyau) - the two rivers; पापभयापहे (pāpabhayāpahe) - removing sin and fear;]
(Then Kaunteya, having departed in order, O best of the Bharatas, (came to) Nandā and Aparanandā, the two rivers removing sin and fear.)
Then Kunti’s son proceeded in order, O best of the Bharatas, to the two rivers Nandā and Aparanandā, which remove sin and fear. (03-109-1)
स पर्वतं समासाद्य हेमकूटमनामयम्। अचिन्त्यानद्भुतान्भावान्ददर्श सुबहून्नृपः ॥०३-१०९-२॥
sa parvataṃ samāsādya hemakūṭam anāmayam| acintyān adbhutān bhāvān dadarśa subahūn nṛpaḥ ॥03-109-2॥
[स (sa) - he; पर्वतं (parvataṃ) - the mountain; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; हेमकूटम् (hemakūṭam) - Hemakūṭa; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from disease; अचिन्त्यान् (acintyān) - inconceivable; अद्भुतान् (adbhutān) - wonderful; भावान् (bhāvān) - forms; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; सुबहून् (subahūn) - very many; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(He, having approached the mountain Hemakūṭa, free from disease, inconceivable and wonderful forms, very many, the king saw.)
The king, having reached the Hemakūṭa mountain, which is free from affliction, saw very many inconceivable and wonderful forms. (03-109-2)
वाचो यत्राभवन्मेघा उपलाश्च सहस्रशः। नाशक्नुवंस्तमारोढुं विषण्णमनसो जनाः ॥०३-१०९-३॥
vāco yatrābhavanmeghā upalāśca sahasraśaḥ। nāśaknuvan tamāroḍhuṃ viṣaṇṇamanaso janāḥ॥03-109-3॥
[वाचः (vācaḥ) - of words; यत्र (yatra) - where; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; मेघाः (meghāḥ) - clouds; उपलाः (upalāḥ) - stones; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - were able; तम् (tam) - that (him/it); आरोढुम् (āroḍhum) - to ascend; विषण्णमनसः (viṣaṇṇamanasaḥ) - despondent-minded; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(Of words, where became clouds, and stones by thousands; not were able that to ascend, despondent-minded people.)
Where words became as clouds and stones by the thousands, the despondent-minded people were not able to ascend that. (03-109-3)
वायुर्नित्यं ववौ यत्र नित्यं देवश्च वर्षति। सायं प्रातश्च भगवान्दृश्यते हव्यवाहनः ॥०३-१०९-४॥
vāyur nityaṃ vavau yatra nityaṃ devaś ca varṣati। sāyaṃ prātaś ca bhagavān dṛśyate havyavāhanaḥ॥03-109-4॥
[वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; नित्यं (nityam) - constantly; ववौ (vavau) - blew; यत्र (yatra) - where; नित्यं (nityam) - constantly; देवः (devaḥ) - god; च (ca) - and; वर्षति (varṣati) - rains; सायं (sāyam) - in the evening; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) - Agni;]
(Wind constantly blew where constantly god and rains. In the evening and in the morning and the revered one Agni is seen.)
Where the wind constantly blows and the god (Indra) continually sends rain, and in the evening and morning the revered Agni is visible. (03-109-4)
एवं बहुविधान्भावानद्भुतान्वीक्ष्य पाण्डवः। लोमशं पुनरेव स्म पर्यपृच्छत्तदद्भुतम् ॥०३-१०९-५॥
evaṃ bahuvidhān bhāvān adbhutān vīkṣya pāṇḍavaḥ। lomaśaṃ punar eva sma paryapṛcchat tad adbhutam ॥03-109-5॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधान् (bahuvidhān) - of many kinds; भावान् (bhāvān) - states (existences); अद्भुतान् (adbhutān) - wondrous; वीक्ष्य (vīkṣya) - having seen; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; लोमशं (lomaśam) - Lomaśa (the sage); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; स्म (sma) - (indeed, particle indicating past action); पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - inquired; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful;]
(Thus, having seen states of many kinds, wondrous, the son of Pāṇḍu indeed again inquired of Lomaśa that wondrous (thing).)
Having thus seen many kinds of wondrous phenomena, the Pāṇḍava again asked Lomaśa about that wonder. (03-109-5)
लोमश उवाच॥

(Lomaśa said;)
Lomaśa said.
यथाश्रुतमिदं पूर्वमस्माभिररिकर्शन। तदेकाग्रमना राजन्निबोध गदतो मम ॥०३-१०९-६॥
yathāśrutam idaṁ pūrvam asmābhir arikarśana। tad ekāgramanā rājann ibodha gadato mama ॥03-109-6॥
[यथाश्रुतम् (yathāśrutam) - as heard; इदं (idaṁ) - this; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; अरि-कर्त्सन (arikarśana) - O tormentor of foes; तत् (tat) - that; एकाग्रमना (ekāgramanā) - with concentrated mind; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; गदतः (gadataḥ) - of (me) speaking; मम (mama) - my;]
(As heard, this, before, by us, O tormentor of foes; that, with concentrated mind, O king, listen to (me) speaking, my.)
O king, as this was formerly heard by us, O tormentor of foes, listen with a concentrated mind to my narration. (03-109-6)
अस्मिन्नृषभकूटेऽभूदृषभो नाम तापसः। अनेकशतवर्षायुस्तपस्वी कोपनो भृशम् ॥०३-१०९-७॥
asmin nṛṣabhakūṭe 'bhūd ṛṣabho nāma tāpasaḥ। anekaśatavārṣāyus tapasvī kopano bhṛśam॥03-109-7॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; ऋषभकूटे (nṛṣabhakūṭe) - on Nṛṣabhakūṭa (mountain); अभूत् (abhūt) - there was; ऋषभः (ṛṣabhaḥ) - Ṛṣabha; नाम (nāma) - named; तापसः (tāpasaḥ) - ascetic; अनेकशतवर्षायुः (anekaśatavārṣāyuḥ) - having a lifespan of many hundreds of years; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - one with austerities; कोपनः (kopanaḥ) - prone to anger; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly;]
(In this Nṛṣabhakūṭa, there was an ascetic named Ṛṣabha, having a lifespan of many hundreds of years, austere, exceedingly prone to anger.)
On this Nṛṣabhakūṭa (mountain), there lived an ascetic named Ṛṣabha, who lived for many hundreds of years, was devoted to austerities, and was extremely irascible. (03-109-7)
स वै सम्भाष्यमाणोऽन्यैः कोपाद्गिरिमुवाच ह। य इह व्याहरेत्कश्चिदुपलानुत्सृजेस्तदा ॥०३-१०९-८॥
sa vai sambhāṣyamāṇo'nyaiḥ kopād girim uvāca ha। ya iha vyāharet kaścid upalān utsṛjet tadā॥03-109-8॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; सम्भाष्यमाणः (sambhāṣyamāṇaḥ) - being addressed; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; गिरिम् (girim) - to the mountain; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; इह (iha) - here; व्याहरेत् (vyāharet) - should speak; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; उपलान् (upalān) - stones; उत्सृजेत् (utsṛjet) - should throw; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He indeed, being addressed by others, from anger, to the mountain said indeed: "Who here should speak, whoever anyone, stones should throw, then.")
He, being addressed by others, angrily spoke to the mountain: "Whoever here speaks, let someone throw stones at him then." (03-109-8)
वातं चाहूय मा शब्दमित्युवाच स तापसः। व्याहरंश्चैव पुरुषो मेघेन विनिवार्यते ॥०३-१०९-९॥
vātaṃ cāhūya mā śabdam ityuvāca sa tāpasaḥ। vyāharaṃś caiva puruṣo meghena vinivāryate ॥03-109-9॥
[वातम् (vātaṃ) - wind; (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; आहूय (āhūya) - having invoked; मा (mā) - not; शब्दम् (śabdam) - sound; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सः (sa) - he; तापसः (tāpasaḥ) - ascetic; व्याहरन् (vyāharan) - uttering; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; मेघेन (meghena) - by the cloud; विनिवार्यते (vinivāryate) - is restrained;]
(The ascetic, having invoked the wind, said thus: 'Do not (make) sound.' And the man, while uttering, is indeed restrained by the cloud.)
The ascetic called upon the wind and said, 'Do not make any sound.' Meanwhile, as the man speaks, he is held back by the cloud. (03-109-9)
एवमेतानि कर्माणि राजंस्तेन महर्षिणा। कृतानि कानिचित्कोपात्प्रतिषिद्धानि कानिचित् ॥०३-१०९-१०॥
evam etāni karmāṇi rājaṃs tena maharṣiṇā। kṛtāni kānicit kopāt pratiṣiddhāni kānicit ॥03-109-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतानि (etāni) - these; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; राजंस् (rājaṃs) - O king; तेन (tena) - by him; महर्षिणा (maharṣiṇā) - by the great sage; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - were done; कानि चित् (kānicit) - some; कोपात् (kopāt) - out of anger; प्रतिषिद्धानि (pratiṣiddhāni) - forbidden; कानि चित् (kānicit) - some;]
(Thus, these actions, O king, by him, the great sage, were done: some out of anger, some forbidden.)
Thus, O king, these actions were performed by that great sage—some were done out of anger, and some were forbidden. (03-109-10)
नन्दामभिगतान्देवान्पुरा राजन्निति श्रुतिः। अन्वपद्यन्त सहसा पुरुषा देवदर्शिनः ॥०३-१०९-११॥
nandām abhigatān devān purā rājan iti śrutiḥ। anvapadyanta sahasā puruṣā devadarśinaḥ॥03-109-11॥
[नन्दाम् (nandām) - delight; अभिगतान् (abhigatān) - who had approached; देवान् (devān) - the gods; पुरा (purā) - formerly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - report; अन्वपद्यन्त (anvapadyanta) - followed after; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; देवदर्शिनः (devadarśinaḥ) - beholders of the gods;]
(Delight who had approached the gods, formerly, O king, thus (was) the report. Followed suddenly men, beholders of the gods.)
O king, there was a report in former times that men who had beheld the gods and delighted in approaching them suddenly followed (them). (03-109-11)
ते दर्शनमनिच्छन्तो देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः। दुर्गं चक्रुरिमं देशं गिरिप्रत्यूहरूपकम् ॥०३-१०९-१२॥
te darśanam anicchanto devāḥ śakra-purogamāḥ. durgaṃ cakrur imaṃ deśaṃ giri-pratyūha-rūpakam ॥03-109-12॥
[ते (te) - they; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; seeing; अनिच्छन्तः (anicchantaḥ) - not desiring; unwilling; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; शक्रपुरोगमाः (śakra-purogamāḥ) - with Indra at their head; Indra and others; दुर्गम् (durgam) - fortified place; inaccessible; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; इमम् (imam) - this; देशम् (deśam) - place; region; गिरिप्रत्यूहरूपकम् (giri-pratyūha-rūpakam) - having the form of a mountain barrier; mountain-obstructed;]
(They, not desiring sight, the gods with Indra at their head, made this place a fortified (place), having the form of a mountain barrier.)
The gods, with Indra at their head, not wishing to be seen, made this place inaccessible, shaping it as a mountain barrier. (03-109-12)
तदा प्रभृति कौन्तेय नरा गिरिमिमं सदा। नाशक्नुवनभिद्रष्टुं कुत एवाधिरोहितुम् ॥०३-१०९-१३॥
tadā prabhṛti kaunteya narā girimimaṃ sadā। nāśaknuvanabhidroṣṭuṃ kuta evādhirōhitum ॥03-109-13॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from that time; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; नराः (narāḥ) - men; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; इमम् (imam) - this; सदा (sadā) - always; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवन् (aśaknuvan) - are able; अभिद्रष्टुम् (abhidroṣṭum) - to look at closely; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; एव (eva) - indeed; अधिरोहितुम् (adhirohitum) - to climb;]
(Then from that time, O son of Kunti, men this mountain always not are able to look at closely; how indeed (could they) climb.)
From that time onward, O son of Kunti, men have never been able to look closely at this mountain; how then could they possibly climb it? (03-109-13)
नातप्ततपसा शक्यो द्रष्टुमेष महागिरिः। आरोढुं वापि कौन्तेय तस्मान्नियतवाग्भव ॥०३-१०९-१४॥
nātaptatapasā śakyo draṣṭumeṣa mahāgiriḥ. āroḍhuṃ vāpi kaunteya tasmānniyatavāgbhava ॥03-109-14॥
[न (na) - not; अतप्ततपसा (ataptatapasā) - by one whose austerities are not performed; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; महागिरिः (mahāgiriḥ) - great mountain; आरोढुम् (āroḍhum) - to ascend; वा अपि (vā api) - or even; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; नियतवाक् (niyatavāk) - with controlled speech; भव (bhava) - be;]
(Not by one whose austerities are not performed is this great mountain possible to see or even to ascend, O son of Kunti; therefore, be one with controlled speech.)
O son of Kunti, this great mountain cannot be seen or ascended by one whose austerities are unperformed; therefore, keep your speech under control. (03-109-14)
इह देवाः सदा सर्वे यज्ञानाजह्रुरुत्तमान्। तेषामेतानि लिङ्गानि दृश्यन्तेऽद्यापि भारत ॥०३-१०९-१५॥
iha devāḥ sadā sarve yajñān ājahruḥ uttamān। teṣām etāni liṅgāni dṛśyante ’dyāpi bhārata॥03-109-15॥
[इह (iha) - here; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सदा (sadā) - always; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; आजह्रुः (ājahruḥ) - they obtained; उत्तमान् (uttamān) - excellent; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; एतानि (etāni) - these; लिङ्गानि (liṅgāni) - marks; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Here the gods always all excellent sacrifices obtained. Of them these marks are seen even today, O Bhārata.)
Here, O Bhārata, the gods always obtained all the excellent sacrifices. The signs of them are seen even today. (03-109-15)
कुशाकारेव दूर्वेयं संस्तीर्णेव च भूरियम्। यूपप्रकारा बहवो वृक्षाश्चेमे विशां पते ॥०३-१०९-१६॥
kuśākāra eva dūrveyaṁ saṁstīrṇa eva ca bhūriyam | yūpaprakārā bahavo vṛkṣāś ceme viśāṁ pate ॥03-109-16॥
[कुशाकारेव (kuśākāra iva) - like a mat of kuśa; दूर्वेयं (dūrvā iyam) - this (is) like grass (dūrvā); संस्तीर्णेव (saṁstīrṇa iva) - like being spread; च (ca) - and; भूरियम् (bhūḥ iyam) - this earth; यूपप्रकारा (yūpaprakārāḥ) - like posts for altars; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; वृक्षाः (vṛkṣāḥ) - trees; च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Like a mat of kuśa, this is like grass (dūrvā), like being spread, and this earth. Like posts for altars, many trees also, these, O lord of men.)
O lord of men, this earth is like a mat of kuśa grass, like it has been spread with dūrvā; these many trees are like posts for altars. (03-109-16)
देवाश्च ऋषयश्चैव वसन्त्यद्यापि भारत। तेषां सायं तथा प्रातर्दृश्यते हव्यवाहनः ॥०३-१०९-१७॥
devāś ca ṛṣayaś caiva vasanty adyāpi bhārata। teṣāṃ sāyaṃ tathā prātar dṛśyate havyavāhanaḥ॥03-109-17॥
[देवाः (devāḥ) (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) (ca) - and; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; वसन्ति (vasanti) (vasanti) - dwell; अद्यापि (adyāpi) (adyāpi) - even today; भारत (bhārata) (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तेषां (teṣām) (teṣām) - of them; सायं (sāyam) (sāyam) - in the evening; तथा (tathā) (tathā) - also; प्रातर् (prātar) (prātar) - in the morning; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) (dṛśyate) - is seen; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) (havyavāhanaḥ) - the carrier of offerings (Agni);]
(Gods and sages indeed dwell even today, O Bhārata; for them in the evening also in the morning is seen the carrier of offerings (Agni).)
O Bhārata, even today gods and sages dwell (here); for them the carrier of offerings, Agni, is seen both in the evening and in the morning. (03-109-17)
इहाप्लुतानां कौन्तेय सद्यः पाप्मा विहन्यते। कुरुश्रेष्ठाभिषेकं वै तस्मात्कुरु सहानुजः ॥०३-१०९-१८॥
ihāplutānāṃ kaunteya sadyaḥ pāpmā vihanyate। kuruśreṣṭhābhiṣekaṃ vai tasmātkuru sahānujaḥ॥03-109-18॥
[इहाप्लुतानाम् (ihāplutānām) - of those who have bathed here; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; पाप्मा (pāpmā) - sin; विहन्यते (vihanyate) - is destroyed; कुरुश्रेष्ठाभिषेकम् (kuruśreṣṭhābhiṣekam) - bath of the best of Kurus; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कुरु (kuru) - do; सहानुजः (sahānujaḥ) - with your brother;]
(O son of Kunti, for those who have bathed here, sin is immediately destroyed. Therefore, indeed, perform the bath of the best of Kurus here with your brother.)
O son of Kunti, those who bathe here have their sins instantly destroyed. Therefore, indeed, perform the bath of the best of Kurus here together with your brother. (03-109-18)
ततो नन्दाप्लुताङ्गस्त्वं कौशिकीमभियास्यसि। विश्वामित्रेण यत्रोग्रं तपस्तप्तमनुत्तमम् ॥०३-१०९-१९॥
tato nandāplutāṅgas tvaṁ kauśikīm abhiyāsyasi। viśvāmitreṇa yatrograṁ tapastaptam anuttamam॥03-109-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नन्दाप्लुताङ्गः (nandāplutāṅgaḥ) - with body bathed in bliss; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कौशिकीम् (kauśikīm) - to Kauśikī (the river or personified goddess); अभियास्यसि (abhiyāsyasi) - you will go toward; विश्वामित्रेण (viśvāmitreṇa) - by Viśvāmitra; यत्र (yatra) - where; उग्रम् (ugram) - terrible; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्तम् (taptam) - was performed; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed;]
(Then, with body bathed in bliss, you will go toward Kauśikī, where, by Viśvāmitra, terrible unsurpassed austerity was performed.)
Then, with your body filled with bliss, you will proceed to Kauśikī, where Viśvāmitra performed his terrible and unsurpassed austerity. (03-109-19)

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; समाप्लुत्य (samāplutya) - having bathed completely; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; सगणः (sagaṇaḥ) - with his retinue; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; जगाम (jagāma) - went; कौशिकीं (kauśikīṃ) - to Kauśikī (river); पुण्यां (puṇyāṃ) - holy; रम्यां (ramyāṃ) - beautiful; शिवजलां (śivajalāṃ) - having auspicious waters; नदीम् (nadīm) - river;]
(Then there, having bathed his limbs, with his retinue, the king went to the holy, beautiful, auspicious-watered river Kauśikī.)
Then, having thoroughly bathed his limbs there with his retinue, the king went to the holy, beautiful, and auspicious Kauśikī river. (03-109-20)
