मान्धाता राजशार्दूलस्त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः। कथं जातो महाब्रह्मन्यौवनाश्वो नृपोत्तमः ॥ कथं चैतां परां काष्ठां प्राप्तवानमितद्युतिः ॥०३-१२६-१॥
māndhātā rājaśārdūlas triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ। kathaṁ jāto mahābrahman yauvanāśvo nṛpottamaḥ॥ kathaṁ caitāṁ parāṁ kāṣṭhāṁ prāptavānamitadyutiḥ॥03-126-1॥

How was Māndhātā, the tiger among kings, who is renowned in the three worlds, born from Yauvanāśva, O great Brāhman, best of kings? And how did this illustrious one attain such a supreme state? (03-126-1)
यस्य लोकास्त्रयो वश्या विष्णोरिव महात्मनः। एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं चरितं तस्य धीमतः ॥०३-१२६-२॥
yasya lokās trayo vaśyā viṣṇor iva mahātmanaḥ। etad icchāmy ahaṃ śrotuṃ caritaṃ tasya dhīmataḥ ॥03-126-2॥

(Of whom the three worlds are subject, as (they are) to Viṣṇu, to the great-souled one—this I wish, I, to hear, the deeds of him, of the wise.)
I wish to hear the deeds of that wise one, of whom the three worlds are subject, even as they are to Viṣṇu, the great-souled one. (03-126-2)
यथा मान्धातृशब्दश्च तस्य शक्रसमद्युतेः। जन्म चाप्रतिवीर्यस्य कुशलो ह्यसि भाषितुम् ॥०३-१२६-३॥
yathā māndhātṛ-śabdaś ca tasya śakra-sama-dyuteḥ। janma ca aprativīryasya kuśalo hy asi bhāṣitum ॥03-126-3॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner of; मान्धातृशब्दः (māndhātṛ-śabdaḥ) - Māndhātṛ's name; the word 'Māndhātṛ'; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; शक्रसमद्युतेः (śakra-sama-dyuteḥ) - whose brilliance is equal to Indra's; of one whose radiance equals Indra; जन्म (janma) - birth; च (ca) - and; अप्रतिवीर्यस्य (aprativīryasya) - of him without equal in heroism; of one whose valor is unmatched; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; expert; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; भाषितुम् (bhāṣitum) - to describe; to speak about;]
(Just as the word 'Māndhātṛ', and his, whose radiance is equal to Indra; and the birth of him whose valor is unequalled, you are indeed skilled to speak about.)
Just as you are skilled in describing the name of Māndhātṛ, whose brilliance equals Indra and whose birth is without equal in heroism, so too you are indeed able to narrate it. (03-126-3)

aśvamedhasahasraṃ ca prāpya dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। anyaiś ca kratu-bhir mukhyair vividhair āpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ॥03-126-6॥

अनपत्यस्तु राजर्षिः स महात्मा दृढव्रतः। मन्त्रिष्वाधाय तद्राज्यं वननित्यो बभूव ह ॥०३-१२६-७॥
anapatyastu rājarṣiḥ sa mahātmā dṛḍhavrataḥ। mantriṣv ādhāya tad rājyaṃ vananityo babhūva ha ॥03-126-7॥
[अनपत्यः (anapatyaḥ) - without offspring; तु (tu) - but; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; सः (saḥ) - he; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; दृढव्रतः (dṛḍhavrataḥ) - firmly vowed; मन्त्रिषु (mantriṣu) - in the ministers; आधाय (ādhāya) - having placed; तत् (tat) - that; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; वननित्यः (vananityaḥ) - always dwelling in the forest; बभूव (babhūva) - became; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(But the royal sage, that great-souled (one), firmly vowed, without offspring, having placed that kingdom in the ministers, indeed became always dwelling in the forest.)
But that royal sage, the great-souled and steadfast one, having no offspring, entrusted the kingdom to his ministers and indeed became one who always lived in the forest. (03-126-7)
शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना संयोज्यात्मानमात्मना। पिपासाशुष्कहृदयः प्रविवेशाश्रमं भृगोः ॥०३-१२६-८॥
śāstra-dṛṣṭena vidhinā saṃyojyātmānam ātmanā। pipāsā-śuṣka-hṛdayaḥ praviveśāśramaṃ bhṛgoḥ ॥03-126-8॥
[शास्त्रदृष्टेन (śāstra-dṛṣṭena) - by what is prescribed in śāstra; विधिना (vidhinā) - by method; संयोज्य (saṃyojya) - having joined; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - with oneself; पिपासा (pipāsā) - thirst; शुष्क (śuṣka) - dry; हृदयः (hṛdayaḥ) - heart; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; भृगोः (bhṛgoḥ) - of Bhṛgu;]
(By the method prescribed in śāstra, having joined (his) self with himself, with heart dried by thirst, he entered the hermitage of Bhṛgu.)
Following the procedure laid down in the śāstra, uniting himself with self, his heart parched by thirst, he entered the hermitage of Bhṛgu. (03-126-8)
तामेव रात्रिं राजेन्द्र महात्मा भृगुनन्दनः। इष्टिं चकार सौद्युम्नेर्महर्षिः पुत्रकारणात् ॥०३-१२६-९॥
tāmeva rātriṃ rājendra mahātmā bhṛgunandanaḥ। iṣṭiṃ cakāra saudyumnermaharṣiḥ putrakāraṇāt॥03-126-9॥

सम्भृतो मन्त्रपूतेन वारिणा कलशो महान्। तत्रातिष्ठत राजेन्द्र पूर्वमेव समाहितः ॥ यत्प्राश्य प्रसवेत्तस्य पत्नी शक्रसमं सुतम् ॥०३-१२६-१०॥

(A great pot, gathered with water purified by mantra, was placed there, O king, previously indeed prepared. By having drunk (from it), his wife would give birth to a son equal to Indra.)
O king, a large pot filled with water purified by mantras had been earlier placed and carefully prepared there. By drinking (from it), his wife would give birth to a son equal to Indra. (03-126-10)
तं न्यस्य वेद्यां कलशं सुषुपुस्ते महर्षयः। रात्रिजागरणश्रान्ताः सौद्युम्निः समतीत्य तान् ॥०३-१२६-११॥
taṁ nyasya vedyāṁ kalaśaṁ suṣupuste maharṣayaḥ. rātrijāgaraṇaśrāntāḥ saudyumniḥ samatītya tān ॥03-126-11॥

शुष्ककण्ठः पिपासार्तः पाणीयार्थी भृशं नृपः। तं प्रविश्याश्रमं श्रान्तः पाणीयं सोऽभ्ययाचत ॥०३-१२६-१२॥
śuṣkakaṇṭhaḥ pipāsārtaḥ pāṇīyārthī bhṛśaṃ nṛpaḥ। taṃ praviśyāśramaṃ śrāntaḥ pāṇīyaṃ so'bhyayācata॥03-126-12॥

(Dry-throated, tormented by thirst, seeker of water, greatly the king, having entered that hermitage, tired, water, he asked for.)
The king, whose throat was dry, tormented by thirst and eagerly seeking water, entered the hermitage, exhausted, and requested water. (03-126-12)
तस्य श्रान्तस्य शुष्केण कण्ठेन क्रोशतस्तदा। नाश्रौषीत्कश्चन तदा शकुनेरिव वाशितम् ॥०३-१२६-१३॥
tasya śrāntasya śuṣkeṇa kaṇṭhena krośatas tadā। nāśrauṣīt kaścana tadā śakuner iva vāśitam ॥03-126-13॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; श्रान्तस्य (śrāntasya) - being exhausted; शुष्केण (śuṣkeṇa) - with dry; कण्ठेन (kaṇṭhena) - throat; क्रोशतः (krośataḥ) - shouting; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; अश्रौषीत् (aśrauṣīt) - heard; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; तदा (tadā) - then; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of a bird; इव (iva) - like; वाशितम् (vāśitam) - cry;]
(Of him being exhausted, with a dry throat, shouting then, not anyone then heard, like the cry of a bird.)
Although he was exhausted and shouted with a dry throat at that time, no one heard him then, just like the cry of a bird. (03-126-13)
ततस्तं कलशं दृष्ट्वा जलपूर्णं स पार्थिवः। अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन पीत्वा चाम्भो व्यवासृजत् ॥०३-१२६-१४॥
tatas taṁ kalaśaṁ dṛṣṭvā jala-pūrṇaṁ sa pārthivaḥ। abhyadravata vegena pītvā cāmbho vyavāsṛjat ॥03-126-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṁ) - that; कलशं (kalaśam) - pot; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; जलपूर्णं (jala-pūrṇam) - full of water; स (sa) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; अभ्यद्रवत (abhyadravata) - rushed; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; च (ca) - and; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; व्यवासृजत् (vyavāsṛjat) - discharged;]
(Then that pot, having seen, full of water, he the king rushed with speed, having drunk and water discharged.)

स पीत्वा शीतलं तोयं पिपासार्तो महीपतिः। निर्वाणमगमद्धीमान्सुसुखी चाभवत्तदा ॥०३-१२६-१५॥
sa pītvā śītalaṃ toyaṃ pipāsārto mahīpatiḥ। nirvāṇam agamad dhīmān su-sukhī ca abhavat tadā॥03-126-15॥

(He, having drunk cool water, the king afflicted by thirst attained relief; the wise became very happy and at that time.)

ततस्ते प्रत्यबुध्यन्त ऋषयः सनराधिपाः। निस्तोयं तं च कलशं ददृशुः सर्व एव ते ॥०३-१२६-१६॥
tatas te pratyabudhyanta ṛṣayaḥ sanarādhipāḥ। nistoyaṃ taṃ ca kalaśaṃ dadṛśuḥ sarva eva te ॥03-126-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; प्रत्यबुध्यन्त (pratyabudhyanta) - awoke; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; सनराधिपाः (sa-narādhipāḥ) - together with kings; निस्तोयम् (nistoyam) - empty of water; तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; कलशम् (kalaśam) - pitcher; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्व एव (sarva eva) - all indeed; ते (te) - they; ॥०३-१२६-१६॥ (॥03-126-16॥) -;]
(Then they awoke, the sages together with kings. They all indeed saw that pitcher empty of water.)
Then the sages, along with the kings, awoke. They all saw that pitcher completely empty of water. (03-126-16)
कस्य कर्मेदमिति च पर्यपृच्छन्समागताः। युवनाश्वो मयेत्येव सत्यं समभिपद्यत ॥०३-१२६-१७॥
kasya karmedam iti ca paryapṛcchansamāgatāḥ। yuvanāśvo mayety eva satyaṃ samabhipadyata ॥03-126-17॥
[कस्य (kasya) - whose; कर्म (karma) - deed; इदम् (idam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; पर्यपृच्छन् (paryapṛcchan) - inquired; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - those who had assembled; युवनाश्वः (yuvanāśvaḥ) - Yuvanāśva; मयि (mayi) - in me; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; समभिपद्यत (samabhipadyata) - was accepted;]
(Whose deed is this thus and those who had assembled inquired; Yuvanāśva in me thus indeed truth was accepted.)
"Whose deed is this?" — thus all who had assembled inquired; "It is Yuvanāśva, in me," — thus the truth was indeed accepted. (03-126-17)
न युक्तमिति तं प्राह भगवान्भार्गवस्तदा। सुतार्थं स्थापिता ह्यापस्तपसा चैव सम्भृताः ॥०३-१२६-१८॥
na yuktam iti taṃ prāha bhagavān bhārgavas tadā। sutārthaṃ sthāpitā hy āpas tapasā caiva sambhṛtāḥ ॥03-126-18॥
[न (na) - not; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; इति (iti) - thus; तं (taṃ) - to him; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu); तदा (tadā) - then; सुतार्थम् (sutārtham) - for the sake of a son; स्थापिता (sthāpitāḥ) - established; हि (hi) - indeed; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सम्भृताः (sambhṛtāḥ) - collected;]
(Not proper - thus to him spoke the revered Bhārgava then. For the sake of a son waters were indeed established and indeed collected by austerity.)
Bhārgava, the revered one, then said to him, "This is not proper." The waters were indeed established and gathered through austerity for the sake of a son. (03-126-18)
मया ह्यत्राहितं ब्रह्म तप आस्थाय दारुणम्। पुत्रार्थं तव राजर्षे महाबलपराक्रम ॥०३-१२६-१९॥
mayā hy atrāhitaṃ brahma tapa āsthāya dāruṇam। putrārthaṃ tava rājarṣe mahābalaparākrama ॥03-126-19॥

(By me indeed here was performed sacred rite, austerity, undertaking severe, for the sake of a son for you, O royal sage of great strength and courage.)
O royal sage of great strength and courage, I have indeed undertaken here a severe austerity, performing a sacred rite, for the sake of obtaining a son for you. (03-126-19)
महाबलो महावीर्यस्तपोबलसमन्वितः। यः शक्रमपि वीर्येण गमयेद्यमसादनम् ॥०३-१२६-२०॥
mahābalo mahāvīryas tapobalasamanvitaḥ। yaḥ śakram api vīryeṇa gamayed yamasādanam ॥03-126-20॥
[महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great heroism; तपःबलसमन्वितः (tapaḥ-bala-samanvitaḥ) - endowed with the power of austerity; यः (yaḥ) - who; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; अपि (api) - even; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by might; गमयेत् (gamayet) - could send; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(Of great strength, of great heroism, endowed with the power of austerity, who could, by might, even send Indra to the abode of Yama.)
He who possesses great strength, great heroism, and the power of austerity, who could, by his might, send even Indra to the abode of Yama. (3-126-20)
अनेन विधिना राजन्मयैतदुपपादितम्। अब्भक्षणं त्वया राजन्नयुक्तं कृतमद्य वै ॥०३-१२६-२१॥
anena vidhinā rājan mayaitad upapāditam। abbhakṣaṇaṃ tvayā rājan nayuktaṃ kṛtam adya vai ॥03-126-21॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; (instrumental singular of idam); विधिना (vidhinā) - by the procedure; by the method; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मया (mayā) - by me; (instrumental singular of aham); एतद् (etad) - this; उपपादितम् (upapāditam) - has been accomplished; has been effected; अब्भक्षणं (abbhakṣaṇam) - drinking water; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; (instrumental singular of tvam); राजन् (rājan) - O king; नयुक्तं (nayuktam) - not appropriate; not proper; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; performed; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(By this procedure, O king, by me this has been accomplished. Drinking water by you, O king, is not appropriate, indeed, done today.)
O king, by this method this has been accomplished by me. But the drinking of water performed by you today is indeed inappropriate. (03-126-21)
न त्वद्य शक्यमस्माभिरेतत्कर्तुमतोऽन्यथा। नूनं दैवकृतं ह्येतद्यदेवं कृतवानसि ॥०३-१२६-२२॥
na tvadya śakyam asmābhir etat kartum ato'nyathā। nūnaṃ daivakṛtaṃ hy etad yad evaṃ kṛtavān asi ॥03-126-22॥
[न (na) - not; त्वद्यम् (tvadya) - by you; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; एतत् (etat) - this; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; दैवकृतम् (daivakṛtam) - done by destiny; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; यत् (yat) - that; एवम् (evam) - thus; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - you have done; असि (asi) - you are;]
(Not by you is this possible for us to do therefore otherwise. Indeed by destiny done is this, because thus you have done.)
We are not able to do this otherwise because of you. Surely, this has been done by destiny, since you have acted thus. (03-126-22)
पिपासितेन याः पीता विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृताः। आपस्त्वया महाराज मत्तपोवीर्यसम्भृताः ॥ ताभ्यस्त्वमात्मना पुत्रमेवंवीर्यं जनिष्यसि ॥०३-१२६-२३॥
pipāsitena yāḥ pītā vidhimantrapuraskṛtāḥ। āpastvayā mahārāja mattapovīryasambhṛtāḥ ॥ tābhyastvamātmanā putramevaṃvīryaṃ janiṣyasi ॥03-126-23॥
[पिपासितेन (pipāsitena) - by the thirsty one; याः (yāḥ) - which; पीता (pītā) - drunk; विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृताः (vidhimantrapuraskṛtāḥ) - preceded by rite and mantras; आपस्त्वया (āpastvayā) - waters by you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; मत्तपोवीर्यसम्भृताः (mattapovīryasambhṛtāḥ) - filled with my ascetic power; ताभ्यः (tābhyaḥ) - from those (waters); त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by yourself; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; एवंवीर्यं (evaṃvīryam) - of such power; जनिष्यसि (janiṣyasi) - you will beget;]
(Which waters, drunk by the thirsty one, preceded by rite and mantras, by you, O great king, filled with my ascetic power, from those you, by yourself, a son of such power will beget.)
O great king, from those waters which you, in your thirst, drank with proper rites and mantras and which were filled with my ascetic power, you will beget a son of such power through your own self. (03-126-23)
विधास्यामो वयं तत्र तवेष्टिं परमाद्भुताम्। यथा शक्रसमं पुत्रं जनयिष्यसि वीर्यवान् ॥०३-१२६-२४॥
vidhāsyāmo vayaṃ tatra taveṣṭiṃ paramādbhutām। yathā śakrasamaṃ putraṃ janayiṣyasi vīryavān ॥03-126-24॥
[विधास्यामो (vidhāsyāmaḥ) - we shall perform; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; तत्र (tatra) - there; तव (tava) - your; इष्टिं (iṣṭim) - sacrifice; परम (parama) - supreme; अद्भुताम् (adbhutām) - wonderful; यथा (yathā) - so that; शक्रसमम् (śakrasamam) - equal to Indra; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; जनयिष्यसि (janayiṣyasi) - you will beget; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(We shall perform there your sacrifice, supreme, wonderful; so that equal to Indra, a son, you will beget, powerful.)
We will perform your most excellent and wondrous sacrifice there, so that you may beget a son as powerful as Indra. (03-126-24)
ततो वर्षशते पूर्णे तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः। वामं पार्श्वं विनिर्भिद्य सुतः सूर्य इवापरः ॥०३-१२६-२५॥
tato varṣaśate pūrṇe tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ। vāmaṃ pārśvaṃ vinirbhidya sutaḥ sūrya iva aparaḥ॥03-126-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वर्षशते (varṣaśate) - hundred years; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - having been completed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; वामं (vāmaṃ) - left; पार्श्वं (pārśvaṃ) - side; विनिर्भिद्य (vinirbhidya) - having burst forth; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; सूर्य (sūryaḥ) - sun; इव (iva) - like; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another;]
(Then, hundred years having been completed, of him the king, great-souled, left side having burst forth, son like the sun another.)
Then, when a hundred years had been completed, a son—like another sun—burst forth from the left side of that great-souled king. (03-126-25)
निश्चक्राम महातेजा न च तं मृत्युराविशत्। युवनाश्वं नरपतिं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०३-१२६-२६॥
niścakrāma mahāte jā na ca taṃ mṛtyur āviśat। yuvanāśvaṃ narapatiṃ tad adbhutam ivābhavat॥03-126-26॥
[निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - emerged; महातेजा (mahāte jā) - of great brilliance; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; युवनाश्वम् (yuvanāśvam) - Yuvanāśva; नरपतिम् (narapatim) - king; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonder; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Emerged of great brilliance; and death did not enter him; Yuvanāśva the king, that was as if a wonder became.)
The one of great brilliance emerged, and death did not enter him; Yuvanāśva the king—this became truly like a wonder. (03-126-26)
ततः शक्रो महातेजास्तं दिदृक्षुरुपागमत्। प्रदेशिनीं ततोऽस्यास्ये शक्रः समभिसंदधे ॥०३-१२६-२७॥
tataḥ śakro mahātejās taṃ didṛkṣur upāgamat। pradeśinīṃ tato'syāsye śakraḥ samabhisandadhe ॥03-126-27॥

(Then Śakra, of great splendor, wishing to see him, approached. An indicator (finger) then Śakra inserted into his mouth.)

(Me this (one) will bear — thus, named he by the wielder of the thunderbolt. Māndhātā as and name of him they made, together with Indra, the dwellers in heaven.)
He was named by the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra) as Māndhātā, meaning "he will bear me," and the gods together with Indra made this his name. (03-126-28)
प्रदेशिनीं शक्रदत्तामास्वाद्य स शिशुस्तदा। अवर्धत महीपाल किष्कूणां च त्रयोदश ॥०३-१२६-२९॥
pradeśinīṃ śakra-dattām-āsvādya sa śiśus-tadā। avardhata mahīpāla kiṣkūṇāṃ ca trayodaśa ॥03-126-29॥
[प्रदेशिनीं (pradeśinīṃ) - district (milk); शक्रदत्ताम् (śakra-dattām) - given by Indra; granted by the mighty one; आस्वाद्य (āsvādya) - having tasted; having enjoyed; सः (saḥ) - he; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - boy; child; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; अवर्धत (avardhata) - grew; developed; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - king; protector of the earth; किष्कूणां (kiṣkūṇāṃ) - of monkeys; च (ca) - and; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen;]
(Having tasted the province milk given by Indra, he, the boy, then grew, O king, and of monkeys thirteen.)
Having tasted the region’s milk given by Indra, that boy then grew, O king, and (there were) thirteen of the monkeys. (3-126-29)
वेदास्तं सधनुर्वेदा दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि चेश्वरम्। उपतस्थुर्महाराज ध्यातमात्राणि सर्वशः ॥०३-१२६-३०॥
vedās taṃ sadhanur vedā divyāny astrāṇi ca īśvaram। upatasthur mahārāja dhyāta-mātrāṇi sarvaśaḥ॥03-126-30॥
[वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; तं (taṃ) - him; सधनुः (sadhanur) - with-bow; वेदाः (vedā) - the Vedas (repetition; dual sense in context); दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; च (ca) - and; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the Lord; उपतस्थुः (upatasthuḥ) - attended; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ध्यातमात्राणि (dhyāta-mātrāṇi) - as soon as meditated upon; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in all ways;]
(The Vedas, with a bow, the Vedas, divine weapons and the Lord—all attended him, O great king, as soon as meditated upon, in every way.)
O great king, as soon as he was meditated upon, the Vedas, divine weapons with the bow, and even the supreme Lord themselves attended him in every way. (03-126-30)
धनुराजगवं नाम शराः शृङ्गोद्भवाश्च ये। अभेद्यं कवचं चैव सद्यस्तमुपसंश्रयन् ॥०३-१२६-३१॥
dhanur ājagavaṃ nāma śarāḥ śṛṅgodbhavāś ca ye। abhedyaṃ kavacaṃ caiva sadyas tam upasaṃśrayan ॥03-126-31॥
[धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आजगवं (ājagavaṃ) - made of cow’s horn; (ājagava) नाम (nāma) - named; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; शृङ्गोद्भवाः (śṛṅgodbhavāḥ) - originating from horn; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - which; अभेद्यं (abhedyaṃ) - impenetrable; कवचं (kavacaṃ) - armor; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; तम् (tam) - that (him); उपसंश्रयन् (upasaṃśrayan) - approaching for shelter;]
(A bow named ājagava, arrows arising from horn, and impenetrable armor indeed, immediately he sought out that.)
He immediately took up the bow called Ājagava, arrows made from horn, and an impenetrable armor.
सोऽभिषिक्तो मघवता स्वयं शक्रेण भारत। धर्मेण व्यजयल्लोकांस्त्रीन्विष्णुरिव विक्रमैः ॥०३-१२६-३२॥
so'bhisiṣṭo maghavatā svayaṃ śakreṇa bhārata। dharmeṇa vyajayallokāṃstrīnviṣṇuriva vikramaiḥ ॥03-126-32॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Maghavan (Indra); स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma (righteousness); व्यजयत् (vyajayat) - he conquered; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; इव (iva) - like; विक्रमैः (vikramaiḥ) - by strides;]
(He, anointed by Maghavan himself, by Śakra, O Bhārata, by righteousness conquered the three worlds like Viṣṇu by strides.)

तस्याप्रतिहतं चक्रं प्रावर्तत महात्मनः। रत्नानि चैव राजर्षिं स्वयमेवोपतस्थिरे ॥०३-१२६-३३॥
tasyāpratihataṃ cakraṃ prāvartata mahātmanaḥ। ratnāni caiva rājarṣiṃ svayamevopatasthire॥03-126-33॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; of that; अप्रतिहतं (apratihataṃ) - unobstructed; unhindered; चक्रं (cakraṃ) - wheel; प्रावर्तत (prāvartata) - turned (was set in motion); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; of the exalted person; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; jewels; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; राजर्षिं (rājarṣiṃ) - the royal sage; स्वयम् (svayam) - themselves; of their own accord; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; उपतस्थिर (upatasthire) - approached; attended;]
(Of him the unobstructed wheel turned (was set in motion), of the great-souled one. And indeed, the gems, themselves, approached the royal sage.)
The unobstructed wheel of that great-souled one began to turn; and the jewels themselves indeed approached the royal sage. (03-126-33)
तस्येयं वसुसम्पूर्णा वसुधा वसुधाधिप। तेनेष्टं विविधैर्यज्ञैर्बहुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः ॥०३-१२६-३४॥
tasyeyaṃ vasusampūrṇā vasudhā vasudhādhipa. teneṣṭaṃ vividhairyajñairbahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ॥03-126-34॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; इयम् (iyam) - this; वसु-सम्पूर्णा (vasu-sampūrṇā) - filled with treasures; वसुधा (vasudhā) - earth; वसुधा-अधिप (vasudhā-adhipa) - O lord of the earth; तेन (tena) - by him; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - offered; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - of various; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - sacrifices; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; स्वाप्त-दक्षिणैः (svāpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - (with) liberally given gifts;]
(Of him, this treasure-filled earth, O lord of the earth; by him (it was) offered, by various sacrifices, with many liberally given gifts.)
O lord of the earth, this treasure-filled earth was offered by him through many kinds of sacrifices, with abundant gifts. (03-126-34)
चितचैत्यो महातेजा धर्मं प्राप्य च पुष्कलम्। शक्रस्यार्धासनं राजँल्लब्धवानमितद्युतिः ॥०३-१२६-३५॥
citacaitiyo mahātejā dharmaṃ prāpya ca puṣkalam| śakrasyārdhāsanaṃ rājaṃllabdhavānamitadyutiḥ ॥03-126-35॥
[चितचैत्यः (citacaityaḥ) - cit-caitanya (conscious being); महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - possessed of great splendor; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; च (ca) - and; पुष्कलम् (puṣkalam) - abundance; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); अर्धासनम् (ardhāsanam) - half the throne; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लब्धवान् (labdhavān) - he obtained; अमितद्युतिः (amitadyutiḥ) - of immeasurable brilliance;]
(The conscious being, possessed of great splendor, having attained righteousness and abundance, obtained, O king, of Śakra half the throne, of immeasurable brilliance.)
O king, the conscious and splendid one, having attained abundant righteousness, obtained half of Śakra's throne, possessing immeasurable brilliance. (03-126-35)
एकाह्ना पृथिवी तेन धर्मनित्येन धीमता। निर्जिता शासनादेव सरत्नाकरपत्तना ॥०३-१२६-३६॥
ekāhnā pṛthivī tena dharmanityena dhīmatā। nirjitā śāsanādeva saratnākara-pattanā ॥03-126-36॥
[एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; (eka: one; ahnā: by day;); पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; तेन (tena) - by him; धर्मनित्येन (dharmanityena) - by one always firm in dharma; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; निर्जिता (nirjitā) - was conquered; शासनादेव (śāsanād eva) - as soon as commanded; (śāsanāt: by command; eva: indeed/as soon as;); सरत्नाकरपत्तना (sa-ratnākara-pattanā) - with towns up to the ocean; (sa: with; ratnākara: ocean; pattanā: towns;);]
(In one day, the earth, by that ever-dharma-abiding wise man, was conquered, as soon as he commanded, with all cities as far as the ocean.)
By that wise one who was always devoted to dharma, the whole earth with cities extending to the ocean was conquered in a single day, merely by his command. (03-126-36)
तस्य चित्यैर्महाराज क्रतूनां दक्षिणावताम्। चतुरन्ता मही व्याप्ता नासीत्किञ्चिदनावृतम् ॥०३-१२६-३७॥
tasya cityair mahārāja kratūnāṁ dakṣiṇāvatām. catur-antā mahī vyāptā nā āsīt kiñcid anāvṛtam ॥03-126-37॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; चित्यैः (cityaiḥ) - by altars; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; क्रतूनाम् (kratūnām) - of sacrifices; दक्षिणावताम् (dakṣiṇāvatām) - furnished with gifts; endowed with fees; चतुरन्ता (catur-antā) - with four boundaries; extending in all directions; मही (mahī) - the earth; व्याप्ता (vyāptā) - was covered; was filled; न (na) - not; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; किञ्चिद् (kiñcid) - anything; अनावृतम् (anāvṛtam) - uncovered; not occupied;]
(Of him, by altars, O great king, of sacrifices furnished with gifts, with four boundaries the earth was covered; not was anything uncovered.)
O great king, by his sacrificial altars endowed with gifts, the entire earth in all four directions was covered; there was nothing left unoccupied. (03-126-37)
तेन पद्मसहस्राणि गवां दश महात्मना। ब्राह्मणेभ्यो महाराज दत्तानीति प्रचक्षते ॥०३-१२६-३८॥
tena padmasahasrāṇi gavāṃ daśa mahātmanā। brāhmaṇebhyo mahārāja dattānīti pracakṣate ॥03-126-38॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; पद्मसहस्राणि (padmasahasrāṇi) - thousands of (a lakh) lotus (a measure, i.e. millions); गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; दश (daśa) - ten; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; दत्तानि (dattāni) - were given; इति (iti) - thus; प्रचक्षते (pracakṣate) - they declare;]
(By him, thousands of padmas of cows, ten, by the great-souled one, to the Brāhmaṇas, O great king, were given, thus, they declare.)
O great king, they declare that the great-souled one gave ten thousand padmas of cows to the Brāhmaṇas. (03-126-38)
तेन द्वादशवार्षिक्यामनावृष्ट्यां महात्मना। वृष्टं सस्यविवृद्ध्यर्थं मिषतो वज्रपाणिनः ॥०३-१२६-३९॥
tena dvādaśa-vārṣikyām anāvṛṣṭyām mahātmanā। vṛṣṭaṃ sasya-vivṛddhy-arthaṃ miṣato vajrapāṇinaḥ ॥03-126-39॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; द्वादशवार्षिक्याम् (dvādaśa-vārṣikyām) - of twelve years; अनावृष्ट्याम् (anāvṛṣṭyām) - drought; (absence of rain;) महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled (one); वृष्टम् (vṛṣṭam) - rain was made; सस्यविवृद्ध्यर्थम् (sasya-vivṛddhi-artham) - for the sake of the growth of crops; मिषतः (miṣataḥ) - in the sight; वज्रपाणिनः (vajrapāṇinaḥ) - of the wielder of the vajra (Indra);]

tena somakulotpanno gāndhārādhipatir mahān। garjann iva mahāmeghaḥ pramathya nihataḥ śaraiḥ ॥03-126-40॥

तस्यैतद्देवयजनं स्थानमादित्यवर्चसः। पश्य पुण्यतमे देशे कुरुक्षेत्रस्य मध्यतः ॥०३-१२६-४२॥
tasyaitad devayajanaṃ sthānam ādityavarcasaḥ। paśya puṇyatame deśe kurukṣetrasya madhyataḥ॥03-126-42॥

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं मान्धातुश्चरितं महत्। जन्म चाग्र्यं महीपाल यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥०३-१२६-४३॥
etatte sarvam ākhyātaṃ māndhātuścaritaṃ mahat। janma cāgryaṃ mahīpāla yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥03-126-43॥

(This to you all has been recounted—the great deed of Māndhātṛ, and the excellent birth, O protector of the earth, which me you thoroughly enquire.)
O ruler of the earth, all this has been told to you—the great deeds and the distinguished birth of Māndhātṛ, as you have thoroughly asked me. (03-126-43)
