कथंवीर्यः स राजाभूत्सोमको वदतां वर। कर्माण्यस्य प्रभावं च श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥०३-१२७-१॥
kathaṃvīryaḥ sa rājābhūtsomako vadatāṃ vara। karmāṇyasya prabhāvaṃ ca śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ ॥03-127-1॥
[कथंवीर्यः (kathaṃvīryaḥ) - of what prowess; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; सोमकः (somakaḥ) - Somaka; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वर (vara) - best; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - deeds; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रभावं (prabhāvaṃ) - power; च (ca) - and; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly;]
(Of what prowess was he, the king Somaka, O best of speakers? His deeds and power, I wish to hear truly.)
O best among speakers, I wish to truly hear of what prowess the king Somaka was, and his deeds and power. (03-127-1)
लोमश उवाच॥

युधिष्ठिरासीन्नृपतिः सोमको नाम धार्मिकः। तस्य भार्याशतं राजन्सदृशीनामभूत्तदा ॥०३-१२७-२॥
yudhiṣṭhirāsīn nṛpatiḥ somako nāma dhārmikaḥ। tasya bhāryāśataṃ rājan sadṛśīnām abhūt tadā ॥03-127-2॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; आसीन् (āsīn) - was; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; सोमकः (somakaḥ) - Somaka; नाम (nāma) - by name; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; तस्य (tasya) - his; भार्याशतम् (bhāryāśatam) - hundred wives; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सदृशीनाम् (sadṛśīnām) - of equally matched (wives); अभूत् (abhūt) - there were; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira was king Somaka by name, righteous. His hundred wives, O king, of equally matched (wives), there were then.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, a righteous king named Somaka, had at that time a hundred wives, all of equal status, O king. (03-127-2)
स वै यत्नेन महता तासु पुत्रं महीपतिः। कञ्चिन्नासादयामास कालेन महता अपि ॥०३-१२७-३॥
sa vai yatnena mahatā tāsu putraṃ mahīpatiḥ। kañcin nāsādayāmāsa kālena mahatā api॥03-127-3॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; यत्नेन (yatnena) - by effort; महता (mahatā) - great; तासु (tāsu) - among them; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - any; न (na) - not; आसादयामास (āsādayāmāsa) - obtained; कालेन (kālena) - with time; महता (mahatā) - great; अपि (api) - even;]
(He indeed by great effort among them a son the king any not obtained with time great even.)
He indeed, even with great effort and over a long period of time, the king did not obtain any son among them. (03-127-3)
कदाचित्तस्य वृद्धस्य यतमानस्य यत्नतः। जन्तुर्नाम सुतस्तस्मिन्स्त्रीशते समजायत ॥०३-१२७-४॥
kadācit tasya vṛddhasya yatamānasya yatnataḥ। jantur nāma sutas tasmin strīśate samajāyata ॥03-127-4॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; sometime; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of the old (man); यतमानस्य (yatamānasya) - of one making effort; यत्नतः (yatnataḥ) - with effort; जन्तुः (jantuḥ) - creature; नाम (nāma) - named; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - to him; स्त्रीशते (strīśate) - among a hundred wives; समजायत (samajāyata) - was born;]
(Once, of him, of the old (man), of one making effort, with effort, a creature named 'son' to him, among a hundred wives, was born.)
Once, to that old man who was earnestly striving, a son named 'Jantu' was born to him, among a hundred wives. (03-127-4)
तं जातं मातरः सर्वाः परिवार्य समासते। सततं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा कामभोगान्विशां पते ॥०३-१२७-५॥
taṃ jātaṃ mātaraḥ sarvāḥ parivārya samāsate। satataṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kāmabhogān viśāṃ pate॥03-127-5॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; जातं (jātaṃ) - born; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; परिवार्य (parivārya) - surrounding; समासते (samāsate) - sit; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - at the back; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having kept; कामभोगान् (kāmabhogān) - objects of desire; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Him born, mothers all, surrounding, sit. Constantly at the back, having kept, objects of desire, O lord of men.)
When he was born, all the mothers sat around him, keeping desires and pleasures always at the back, O lord of men. (03-127-5)
ततः पिपीलिका जन्तुं कदाचिददशत्स्फिजि। स दष्टो व्यनदद्राजंस्तेन दुःखेन बालकः ॥०३-१२७-६॥
tataḥ pipīlikā jantuṁ kadācidadaśat sphiji। sa daṣṭo vyanadad rājaṁs tena duḥkhena bālakaḥ ॥03-127-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिपीलिका (pipīlikā) - an ant; जन्तुं (jantuṁ) - creature (the boy, as living being); कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; अदशत् (adaśat) - bit; स्फिजि (sphiji) - on the buttock; सः (saḥ) - he; दष्टः (daṣṭaḥ) - bitten (having been bitten); व्यानदत् (vyanadat) - cried out; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तेन (tena) - from that; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with pain; बालकः (bālakaḥ) - the boy;]
(Then, an ant bit the creature (boy) at some time on the buttock. He, having been bitten, cried out, O king, from that pain, the boy.)
Then, an ant bit the boy at some point on his buttock. Bitten, the boy cried out in pain, O king. (03-127-6)
ततस्ता मातरः सर्वाः प्राक्रोशन्भृशदुःखिताः। परिवार्य जन्तुं सहिताः स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥०३-१२७-७॥
tatastā mātaraḥ sarvāḥ prākrośan bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ | parivārya jantuṃ sahitāḥ sa śabdas tumulo'bhavat ||03-127-7||
[ततः (tataḥ) - then;... ता (tā) - they (those, feminine);... मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers;... सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all;... प्राक्रोशन् (prākrośan) - cried out;... भृशदुःखिताः (bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ) - very aggrieved;... परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded;... जन्तुम् (jantuṃ) - living being;... सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together (all together);... स (sa) - that;... शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound;... तुमुलः (tumulaḥ) - tumultuous (loud, uproarious);... अभवत् (abhavat) - became;...;]
(Then they, all the mothers, very aggrieved, cried out; having surrounded the living being, all together; that sound became tumultuous.)
Then all the mothers, deeply aggrieved, cried out together as they surrounded the creature; their uproar became tumultuous. (03-127-7)
तमार्तनादं सहसा शुश्राव स महीपतिः। अमात्यपरिषन्मध्ये उपविष्टः सहर्त्विजैः ॥०३-१२७-८॥
tam ārtanādaṃ sahasā śuśrāva sa mahīpatiḥ। amātya-pariṣan-madhye upaviṣṭaḥ sahartvijaiḥ॥03-127-8॥
[तम् (tam) - that; आर्तनादम् (ārtanādam) - distress-cry; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; स (sa) - he; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; अमात्यपरिषन्मध्ये (amātya-pariṣan-madhye) - in the midst of ministers' assembly; उपविष्टः (upaviṣṭaḥ) - seated; सहर्त्विजैः (sahartvijaiḥ) - along with priests;]
(That distress-cry suddenly he heard, the king; in the midst of the ministers' assembly, seated with priests.)
The king, while seated with the priests in the midst of his ministers, suddenly heard that cry of distress. (03-127-8)
ततः प्रस्थापयामास किमेतदिति पार्थिवः। तस्मै क्षत्ता यथावृत्तमाचचक्षे सुतं प्रति ॥०३-१२७-९॥
tataḥ prasthāpayāmāsa kim etad iti pārthivaḥ। tasmai kṣattā yathāvṛttam ācacakṣe sutaṃ prati ॥03-127-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रस्थापयामास (prasthāpayāmāsa) - sent forth; किम् (kim) - what; एतत् (etad) - this; इति (iti) - thus; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; क्षत्ता (kṣattā) - the chamberlain; यथावृत्तम् (yathāvṛttam) - as had happened; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - related; सुतम् (sutam) - regarding the son; प्रति (prati) - concerning;]
(Then the king sent forth (someone) saying, 'What is this?' To him the chamberlain related as had happened concerning the son.)
Then the king sent someone to ask, 'What is this?' and to him, the chamberlain explained all that had happened concerning the son. (03-127-9)
त्वरमाणः स चोत्थाय सोमकः सह मन्त्रिभिः। प्रविश्यान्तःपुरं पुत्रमाश्वासयदरिंदमः ॥०३-१२७-१०॥
tvaramāṇaḥ sa cotthāya somakaḥ saha mantribhiḥ। praviśyāntaḥpuraṃ putram āśvāsayad ariṃdamaḥ॥03-127-10॥
[त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - being hasty; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; सोमकः (somakaḥ) - Somaka; सह (saha) - together with; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; अन्तःपुरम् (antaḥpuram) - the inner apartments; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; आश्वासयत् (āśvāsayat) - consoled; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - the subduer of foes;]
(Being hasty, he and having risen, Somaka, together with ministers, having entered the inner apartments, son, consoled, the subduer of foes.)
Being hasty, Somaka rose up with his ministers; after entering the inner apartments, the subduer of foes consoled his son. (03-127-10)
सान्त्वयित्वा तु तं पुत्रं निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुरान्नृपः। ऋत्विजैः सहितो राजन्सहामात्य उपाविशत् ॥०३-१२७-११॥
sāntvayitvā tu taṃ putraṃ niṣkramyāntaḥpurān nṛpaḥ। ṛtvijaiḥ sahito rājansahāmātya upāviśat ॥03-127-11॥
[सान्त्वयित्वा (sāntvayitvā) - having consoled; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - that; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having exited; अन्तःपुरात् (antaḥpurāt) - from the inner chambers; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; ऋत्विजैः (ṛtvijaiḥ) - with priests; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सह (saha) - together with; अमात्य (amātya) - ministers; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down;]
(Having consoled but that son, having exited from the inner chambers, the king together with priests, together with ministers, sat down.)
But having consoled his son, when the king had come out of the inner chambers, he sat down with the priests and his ministers. (03-127-11)
सोमक उवाच॥

Somaka said.
धिगस्त्विहैकपुत्रत्वमपुत्रत्वं वरं भवेत्। नित्यातुरत्वाद्भूतानां शोक एवैकपुत्रता ॥०३-१२७-१२॥
dhig astu ihaika-putratvam aputratvaṃ varaṃ bhavet| nityāturatvād bhūtānāṃ śoka evaika-putratā ॥03-127-12॥
[धिगस्तु (dhig astu) - let there be condemnation; इह (iha) - here; एकपुत्रत्वम् (eka-putratvam) - having only one son; अपुत्रत्वं (aputratvam) - having no son; वरं (varaṃ) - better; भवेत् (bhavet) - it would be; नित्य (nitya) - constant; आतुरत्वात् (āturatvāt) - from distress; भूतानां (bhūtānām) - of beings; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; एव (eva) - indeed; एकपुत्रता (eka-putratā) - having only one son;]
(Let there be condemnation here for having only one son; having no son would be better. Due to the constant distress of beings, grief indeed is having only one son. (03-127-12))
Let having only one son be condemned here; having no son at all is better. Because, due to the constant distress of living beings, having only one son is indeed nothing but sorrow. (03-127-12)
इदं भार्याशतं ब्रह्मन्परीक्ष्योपचितं प्रभो। पुत्रार्थिना मया वोढं न चासां विद्यते प्रजा ॥०३-१२७-१३॥
idaṁ bhāryāśataṁ brahman parīkṣyopacitaṁ prabho। putrārthinā mayā voḍhaṁ na cāsāṁ vidyate prajā॥03-127-13॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; भार्याशतम् (bhāryāśatam) - hundred wives; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; परीक्ष्य (parīkṣya) - having examined; उपचितम् (upacitam) - assembled; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; पुत्रार्थिना (putrārthinā) - desiring a son; मया (mayā) - by me; वोढम् (voḍham) - married; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; असाम् (asām) - of these (wives); विद्यते (vidyate) - there is; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring;]
(This hundred wives, O Brahman, having examined, assembled, O lord, desiring a son, by me married, and not of these there is offspring.)
O Brahman, I, desiring a son, have married this hundred wives after careful selection, O lord, but none of them has produced offspring. (03-127-13)
एकः कथञ्चिदुत्पन्नः पुत्रो जन्तुरयं मम। यतमानस्य सर्वासु किं नु दुःखमतः परम् ॥०३-१२७-१४॥
ekaḥ kathañcid utpannaḥ putro jantur ayaṁ mama। yatamānasya sarvāsu kiṁ nu duḥkham ataḥ param॥03-127-14॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; कथञ्चित् (kathañcit) - somehow; उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - born; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; जन्तुः (jantuḥ) - creature; अयम् (ayaṁ) - this; मम (mama) - of mine; यतमानस्य (yatamānasya) - for one striving; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all (matters); किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; परम् (param) - greater;]
(One son, somehow born, this creature of mine— for one striving in all (matters), what indeed pain than this greater?)
This single son, somehow born—this being of mine— what greater pain is there than this for one who strives in every way? (03-127-14)
वयश्च समतीतं मे सभार्यस्य द्विजोत्तम। आसां प्राणाः समायत्ता मम चात्रैकपुत्रके ॥०३-१२७-१५॥
vayaś ca samatītaṁ me sabhāryasya dvijottama। āsāṁ prāṇāḥ samāyattā mama cātraikaputrake ॥03-127-15॥
[वयः (vayaḥ) - age; च (ca) - and; समतीतं (samatītaṁ) - fully passed; मे (me) - my; सभार्यस्य (sabhāryasya) - with wife; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; आसाम् (āsām) - of these (women); प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - lives; समायत्ता (samāyattāḥ) - dependent; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; एकपुत्रके (ekaputrake) - on the only son;]
(Age and fully passed my with wife O best of twice-born. Of these (women) lives dependent my and here on the only son.)
O best of the twice-born, my age together with that of my wife has completely passed. The lives of these women and mine are dependent here on this only son. (03-127-15)
स्यान्नु कर्म तथा युक्तं येन पुत्रशतं भवेत्। महता लघुना वापि कर्मणा दुष्करेण वा ॥०३-१२७-१६॥
syānnu karma tathā yuktaṁ yena putraśataṁ bhavet। mahatā laghunā vāpi karmaṇā duṣkareṇa vā ॥03-127-16॥
[स्यान्नु (syānnu) - may there be indeed; कर्म (karma) - deed; तथा (tathā) - thus; युक्तं (yuktaṁ) - joined; येन (yena) - by which; पुत्रशतं (putraśataṁ) - hundred sons; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; महताऽपि (mahatā'pi) - even by great; लघुना वापि (laghunā vāpi) - or even by small; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by deed; दुष्करेण वा (duṣkareṇa vā) - or by difficult (deed);]
(May there indeed be thus a deed joined by which a hundred sons would result; even by great, or even by small deed, or by difficult (deed).)
There may indeed be such a deed, properly performed, by which one may obtain a hundred sons; whether by a great deed, or by a small one, or even by a difficult deed. (03-127-16)
ऋत्विगुवाच॥

The priest said.
अस्ति वै तादृशं कर्म येन पुत्रशतं भवेत्। यदि शक्नोषि तत्कर्तुमथ वक्ष्यामि सोमक ॥०३-१२७-१७॥
asti vai tādṛśaṃ karma yena putraśataṃ bhavet। yadi śaknoṣi tatkartumatha vakṣyāmi somaka ॥03-127-17॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; वै (vai) - indeed; तादृशं (tādṛśaṃ) - such; कर्म (karma) - act; येन (yena) - by which; पुत्रशतं (putraśatam) - hundred sons; भवेत् (bhavet) - might be; यदि (yadi) - if; शक्नोषि (śaknoṣi) - you are able; तत् (tat) - that; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अथ (atha) - then; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall tell; सोमक (somaka) - O Somaka;]
(There is indeed such an act by which a hundred sons might be; if you are able to do that, then I shall tell, O Somaka.)
There is indeed such a way by which you may have a hundred sons; if you are capable of doing that, then I will tell you, O Somaka. (03-127-17)
सोमक उवाच॥

कार्यं वा यदि वाकार्यं येन पुत्रशतं भवेत्। कृतमेव हि तद्विद्धि भगवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे ॥०३-१२७-१८॥
kāryaṃ vā yadi vā akāryaṃ yena putraśataṃ bhavet। kṛtameva hi tad viddhi bhagavān prabravītu me ॥03-127-18॥
[कार्यं (kāryam) - (it is) to be done; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अकार्यं (akāryam) - not to be done; येन (yena) - by which; पुत्रशतं (putraśatam) - hundred sons; भवेत् (bhavet) - might be (come into being); कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; एव (eva) - only; हि (hi) - indeed; तद् (tad) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O venerable one; प्रब्रवीतु (prabravītu) - may (he) declare; मे (me) - to me;]
(Whether it is to be done or not to be done, by which a hundred sons might be, consider that as already done indeed; O venerable one, may (he) declare that to me.)
Whether it is an act that should or should not be done, by which a hundred sons might result, consider that as already accomplished; O revered one, let (him) declare that to me. (03-127-18)
ऋत्विगुवाच॥

(The priest spoke.)
The priest said.
यजस्व जन्तुना राजंस्त्वं मया वितते क्रतौ। ततः पुत्रशतं श्रीमद्भविष्यत्यचिरेण ते ॥०३-१२७-१९॥
yajasva jantunā rājan tvaṁ mayā vitate kratau। tataḥ putraśataṁ śrīmad bhaviṣyaty acireṇa te॥03-127-19॥
[यजस्व (yajasva) - sacrifice; जन्तुना (jantunā) - with the being; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; वितते (vitate) - spread out; क्रतौ (kratau) - in the sacrifice; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - a hundred sons; श्रीमत् (śrīmat) - possessed of splendor; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; अचिरेण (acireṇa) - very soon; ते (te) - for you;]
(Sacrifice with the being, O king, you, by me, in the sacrifice spread out. Then, a hundred sons, possessed of splendor, will become very soon for you.)
O king, perform the sacrifice with this being performed by me. Then, very soon, a hundred illustrious sons will be born to you. (03-127-19)
वपायां हूयमानायां धूममाघ्राय मातरः। ततस्ताः सुमहावीर्याञ्जनयिष्यन्ति ते सुतान् ॥०३-१२७-२०॥
vapāyāṃ hūyamānāyāṃ dhūmamāghrāya mātaraḥ। tatastāḥ sumahāvīryāñjanayiṣyanti te sutān ॥03-127-20॥
[वपायां (vapāyām) - in the oblation; (vapa, fem. loc. sg.); हूयमानायां (hūyamānāyām) - being offered; (hūyamāna, fem. loc. sg.); धूमम् (dhūmam) - smoke; आघ्राय (āghrāya) - having smelled; (from ā-ghrā, abs.); मातरः (mātaraḥ) - the mothers; (plural feminine nom.); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; ताः (tāḥ) - they; (feminine plural nom.); सुमहावीर्यान् (sumahāvīryān) - of very great power; (accusative masculine plural); जनयिष्यन्ति (janayiṣyanti) - they will produce; they will give birth; ते (te) - your; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; (accusative masculine plural);]
(In the oblation being offered, having smelled the smoke, the mothers then, they will produce very mighty your sons.)
When the offering is being made, after the mothers have smelled the smoke, they will then give birth to your very powerful sons. (03-127-20)
तस्यामेव तु ते जन्तुर्भविता पुनरात्मजः। उत्तरे चास्य सौवर्णं लक्ष्म पार्श्वे भविष्यति ॥०३-१२७-२१॥
tasyāmeva tu te janturbhavitā punarātmajaḥ। uttare cāsya sauvarṇaṃ lakṣma pārśve bhaviṣyati॥03-127-21॥

(In her only, but your offspring will be again born, a son. On the northern side of him, a golden mark will be on the side, it will be.)
