तं दृष्ट्वा घोरवदनं मदं देवः शतक्रतुः। आयान्तं भक्षयिष्यन्तं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ॥०३-१२५-१॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā ghoravadanaṁ madaṁ devaḥ śatakratuḥ। āyāntaṁ bhakṣayiṣyantaṁ vyāttānanam ivāntakam ॥03-125-1॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; घोरवदनं (ghoravadanam) - with a terrible face; मदं (madam) - pride; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Śatakratu (epithet of Indra); आयान्तं (āyāntam) - approaching; भक्षयिष्यन्तं (bhakṣayiṣyantam) - about to devour; व्यात्ताननम् (vyāttānanam) - with gaping mouth; इव (iva) - like; अन्तकम् (antakam) - the destroyer (Yama, death);]
(Having seen him, with a terrible face, pride, the god Śatakratu, approaching, about to devour, with a gaping mouth, like the destroyer (death).)
Śatakratu (Indra), the god, having seen him with a terrible face, filled with pride, approaching to devour with a gaping mouth like the Destroyer (Yama), (was struck with fear). (03-125-1)
भयात्संस्तम्भितभुजः सृक्किणी लेलिहन्मुहुः। ततोऽब्रवीद्देवराजश्च्यवनं भयपीडितः ॥०३-१२५-२॥
bhayāt saṃstambhita-bhujaḥ sṛkkiṇī lelihan-muhuḥ। tato 'bravīd devarājaś cyavanaṃ bhaya-pīḍitaḥ ॥03-125-2॥
[भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; संस्तम्भितभुजः (saṃstambhita-bhujaḥ) - arms paralyzed; सृक्किणी (sṛkkiṇī) - his lips; लेलिहन् (lelihan) - licking; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king of the gods; च्यवनम् (cyavanam) - to Cyavana; भयपीडितः (bhaya-pīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by fear;]
(From fear, (with) arms paralyzed, (he) licking his lips again and again. Then, the king of the gods, afflicted by fear, said to Cyavana.)

सोमार्हावश्विनावेतावद्य प्रभृति भार्गव। भविष्यतः सत्यमेतद्वचो ब्रह्मन्ब्रवीमि ते ॥०३-१२५-३॥
somārhāvaśvināvetāvadya prabhṛti bhārgava। bhaviṣyataḥ satyametadvaco brahmanbravīmi te॥03-125-3॥

(Worthy of soma-offering, the Ashvins, these two, from today onwards, O Bhārgava; in the future, truly, this word, O Brahman, I say to you.)
O Bhārgava, from today onwards, these two Ashvins are worthy of receiving soma; truly, O Brahman, I say this word to you for the future. (03-125-3)
न ते मिथ्या समारम्भो भवत्वेष परो विधिः। जानामि चाहं विप्रर्षे न मिथ्या त्वं करिष्यसि ॥०३-१२५-४॥
na te mithyā samārambho bhavatveṣa paro vidhiḥ। jānāmi cāhaṃ viprarṣe na mithyā tvaṃ kariṣyasi॥03-125-4॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; समारम्भः (samārambhaḥ) - effort; भवतु (bhavatu) - may be; एष (eṣa) - this; परः (paraḥ) - other (higher); विधिः (vidhiḥ) - decree; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O Brāhmaṇa sage; न (na) - not; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; त्वम् (tvam) - you; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - will do;]
(Not for you false effort may be; this other decree. I know and I, O Brāhmaṇa sage, not falsely you will do.)
Your effort will not be in vain; this is another decree. I know, O Brāhmaṇa sage, you will not act falsely. (03-125-4)
सोमार्हावश्विनावेतौ यथैवाद्य कृतौ त्वया। भूय एव तु ते वीर्यं प्रकाशेदिति भार्गव ॥०३-१२५-५॥
somārhāvaśvināvetau yathaivādya kṛtau tvayā। bhūya eva tu te vīryaṃ prakāśediti bhārgava ॥03-125-5॥
[सोमार्हौ (somārhau) - worthy of soma; endowed with the right to soma (sacrifice); अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the two Aśvins; एतौ (etau) - these two; यथा (yathā) - just as; as; इव (iva) - like; as if; आद्य (ādya) - today; now; कृतौ (kṛtau) - were made; caused; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; तु (tu) - but; however; ते (te) - your; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - heroic power; energy; might; प्रकाशेत् (prakāśet) - should manifest; should shine; should become apparent; इति (iti) - thus; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava; descendant of Bhṛgu;]
(Worthy of soma, the two Aśvins, these two, just as today were made by you, again indeed but your heroic power should manifest, thus O Bhārgava (03-125-5))
O Bhārgava, these two Aśvins, worthy of soma, have been made such by you today; but may your heroic power manifest even more again. (03-125-5)
सुकन्यायाः पितुश्चास्य लोके कीर्तिः प्रथेदिति। अतो मयैतद्विहितं तव वीर्यप्रकाशनम् ॥ तस्मात्प्रसादं कुरु मे भवत्वेतद्यथेच्छसि ॥०३-१२५-६॥
sukanyāyāḥ pituś cāsya loke kīrtiḥ prathed iti. ato mayaitad vihitaṃ tava vīryaprakāśanam || tasmāt prasādaṃ kuru me bhavatv etad yathecchasi ||03-125-6||
[सुकन्यायाः (sukanyāyāḥ) - of Sukanya; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of this; लोके (loke) - in the world; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; प्रथेत् (prathet) - may be spread; इति (iti) - thus; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; मया (mayā) - by me; एतत् (etat) - this; विहितं (vihitaṃ) - has been done; तव (tava) - your; वीर्यप्रकाशनम् (vīryaprakāśanam) - manifestation of power; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; कुरु (kuru) - do; मे (me) - to me; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(“Of Sukanya, of the father, and of this one, in the world, fame may be spread—thus; therefore by me this has been done, your manifestation of power. Therefore, favor do to me; let this be as you desire.” (03-125-6))
“May the fame of Sukanya and her father be spread in this world; for this reason, I have effected this manifestation of your power. Therefore, grant me favor; let this be as you wish.” (03-125-6)
एवमुक्तस्य शक्रेण च्यवनस्य महात्मनः। स मन्युर्व्यगमच्छीघ्रं मुमोच च पुरंदरम् ॥०३-१२५-७॥
evam-uktasya śakreṇa cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ। sa manyur vyagamac chīghraṃ mumoca ca puraṃdaram॥03-125-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तस्य (uktasya) - (having been) spoken; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled; स (sa) - he; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; व्यगमच्छीघ्रं (vyagamac chīghraṃ) - departed quickly; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; च (ca) - and; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Puraṃdara (Indra);]
(Thus, when it was spoken by Śakra to Cyavana the great-souled, he—anger—departed quickly and released Puraṃdara.)
When Śakra thus spoke to the great-souled Cyavana, his anger quickly departed, and he released Puraṃdara (Indra). (03-125-7)
मदं च व्यभजद्राजन्पाने स्त्रीषु च वीर्यवान्। अक्षेषु मृगयायां च पूर्वसृष्टं पुनः पुनः ॥०३-१२५-८॥
madaṁ ca vyabhajadraajan pāne strīṣu ca vīryavān। akṣeṣu mṛgayāyāṁ ca pūrvasṛṣṭaṁ punaḥ punaḥ॥03-125-8॥
[मदं (madaṁ) - delight; wine; intoxicating drink; च (ca) - and; व्यभजत् (vyabhajat) - divided; apportioned; राजन् (raajan) - O king; पाने (pāne) - in drinking; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - among women; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the strong one; the powerful; अक्षेषु (akṣeṣu) - at the dice; मृगयायां (mṛgayāyāṁ) - in hunting; च (ca) - and; पूर्वसृष्टं (pūrvasṛṣṭaṁ) - formerly created; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Delight and, O king, divided in drinking, among women and the strong one; at the dice, in hunting and formerly created again and again.)
O king, the strong one divided the formerly created delight again and again among drinking, women, dice, and hunting. (03-125-8)
तथा मदं विनिष्क्षिप्य शक्रं सन्तर्प्य चेन्दुना। अश्विभ्यां सहितान्देवान्याजयित्वा च तं नृपम् ॥०३-१२५-९॥
tathā madaṁ viniṣkṣipya śakraṁ santarpya cendunā. aśvibhyāṁ sahitāndevānyājayitvā ca taṁ nṛpam ॥03-125-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; मदं (madaṁ) - soma (the sacred drink); विनिष्क्षिप्य (viniṣkṣipya) - having put down; शक्रं (śakram) - Indra; सन्तर्प्य (santarpya) - having satisfied; च (ca) - and; इन्दुना (indunā) - with the Soma; अश्विभ्यां (aśvibhyām) - to the two Aśvins; सहितान् (sahitān) - together with; देवान् (devān) - the gods; याजयित्वा (yājayitvā) - having caused to offer sacrifice; च (ca) - and; तं (taṁ) - that; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king;]
(Thus, having put down the soma, having satisfied Indra with the (Soma), and having caused the gods—together with the two Aśvins—to be worshipped, and that king.)
Thus, having set aside the soma and satisfied Indra with the soma, and having caused that king to offer sacrifice to the gods together with the two Aśvins.
विख्याप्य वीर्यं सर्वेषु लोकेषु वदतां वरः। सुकन्यया सहारण्ये विजहारानुरक्तया ॥०३-१२५-१०॥
vikhyāpya vīryaṃ sarveṣu lokeṣu vadatāṃ varaḥ। sukanyayā sahāraṇye vijahārānuraktayā ॥03-125-10॥
[विख्याप्य (vikhyāpya) - having made known; वीर्यं (vīryam) - power; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; वदतां (vadatāṃ) - of the wise; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; सुकन्यया (sukanyayā) - with Sukanya; सह (saha) - together; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; विजहार (vijahāra) - he sported; अनुरक्तया (anuraktayā) - with one who is devoted;]
(Having made his power known in all the worlds, the best of the wise, together with Sukanya, in the forest, sported with the devoted one.)
After displaying his power in all worlds, the best among the wise enjoyed himself in the forest with Sukanya, who was devoted to him. (03-125-10)
तस्यैतद्द्विजसङ्घुष्टं सरो राजन्प्रकाशते। अत्र त्वं सह सोदर्यैः पितॄन्देवांश्च तर्पय ॥०३-१२५-११॥
tasyaitaddvijasaṅghuṣṭaṃ saro rājanprakāśate। atra tvaṃ saha sodaryaiḥ pitṝndevaāṃśca tarpaya ॥03-125-11॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; एतत् (etat) - this; द्विजसङ्घुष्टम् (dvijasaṅghuṣṭam) - filled with the sounds of Brāhmaṇas; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रकाशते (prakāśate) - shines; अत्र (atra) - here; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सह (saha) - with; सोदर्यैः (sodaryaiḥ) - with your brothers born of the same mother; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; देवान् (devān) - the gods; च (ca) - and; तर्पय (tarpaya) - satisfy;]
(Of him, this lake filled with the sounds of Brāhmaṇas, O king, shines. Here, you with (your) brothers born of the same mother, (your) ancestors and the gods also satisfy.)
O king, this lake of his, filled with the sounds of Brāhmaṇas, shines. Here, together with your brothers born of the same mother, satisfy your ancestors and the gods. (03-125-11)
एतद्दृष्ट्वा महीपाल सिकताक्षं च भारत। सैन्धवारण्यमासाद्य कुल्यानां कुरु दर्शनम् ॥ पुष्करेषु महाराज सर्वेषु च जलं स्पृश ॥०३-१२५-१२॥
etad dṛṣṭvā mahīpāla sikatākṣaṃ ca bhārata। saindhavāraṇyam āsādya kulyānāṃ kuru darśanam॥ puṣkareṣu mahārāja sarveṣu ca jalaṃ spṛśa॥03-125-12॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; सिकताक्षम् (sikatākṣam) - Sikatākṣa (the name of a tirtha); च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata); सैन्धव-अरण्यम् (saindhava-araṇyam) - Saindhava forest; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; कुल्यानाम् (kulyānām) - of the water channels; कुरु (kuru) - do; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; पुष्करेषु (puṣkareṣu) - at the lakes; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - at all; च (ca) - and; जलम् (jalan) - water; स्पृश (spṛśa) - touch;]
(Having seen this, O king, and Sikatākṣa as well, O Bhārata, having reached the Saindhava forest, at the water channels do sight. At the lakes, O great king, at all (of them) and touch the water.)
Having seen this place and Sikatākṣa, O king, and arriving at the Saindhava forest, behold the water channels. At every lake, O great king, also touch the water. (03-125-12)
आर्चीकपर्वतश्चैव निवासो वै मनीषिणाम्। सदाफलः सदास्रोतो मरुतां स्थानमुत्तमम् ॥ चैत्याश्चैते बहुशतास्त्रिदशानां युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-१२५-१३॥
ārcīkaparvataścaiva nivāso vai manīṣiṇām। sadāphalaḥ sadāsroto marutāṃ sthānamuttamam ॥ caityāścaite bahuśatāstridaśānāṃ yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-125-13॥
[आर्चीकपर्वतः (ārcīka-parvataḥ) - Ārcīka mountain; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निवासः (nivāsaḥ) - abode; वै (vai) - truly; मनीषिणाम् (manīṣiṇām) - of the wise; सदाफलः (sadāphalaḥ) - always fruitful; सदास्रोतः (sadāsrotaḥ) - always flowing; मरुताम् (marutām) - of the Maruts; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; चैत्याः (caityāḥ) - sanctuaries; च (ca) - and; एते (ete) - these; बहुशताः (bahuśatāḥ) - in great hundreds; त्रिदशानाम् (tridaśānām) - of the gods; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhishthira;]
(Ārcīka mountain and indeed, the abode truly of the wise; always fruitful, always flowing, of the Maruts the highest place. Sanctuaries and these in great hundreds, of the gods, O Yudhishthira.)
The Ārcīka mountain is indeed the abode truly of the wise; it is ever fruitful, ever-flowing, and the best place of the Maruts. These sanctuaries, O Yudhishthira, are found here in great hundreds for the gods. (03-125-13)
एतच्चन्द्रमसस्तीर्थमृषयः पर्युपासते। वैखानसाश्च ऋषयो वालखिल्यास्तथैव च ॥०३-१२५-१४॥
etac candramasas tīrtham ṛṣayaḥ paryupāsate। vaikhānasāś ca ṛṣayo vālakhilyās tathaiva ca ॥03-125-14॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; चन्द्रमसः (candramasaḥ) - of the moon (Chandramas); तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - worship; वैखानसाः (vaikhānasāḥ) - Vaikhanasa sages; च (ca) - and; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; वालखिल्याः (vālakhilyāḥ) - Valakhilya sages; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(This moon's sacred place sages worship. Vaikhanasa sages and sages Valakhilya likewise and.)
The sages worship this sacred place of the Moon. The Vaikhanasa sages and the Valakhilya sages do so likewise. (03-125-14)
शृङ्गाणि त्रीणि पुण्याणि त्रीणि प्रस्रवणानि च। सर्वाण्यनुपरिक्रम्य यथाकाममुपस्पृश ॥०३-१२५-१५॥
śṛṅgāṇi trīṇi puṇyāṇi trīṇi prasravaṇāni ca। sarvāṇyanuparikramya yathākāmam upaspṛśa ॥03-125-15॥
[शृङ्गाणि (śṛṅgāṇi) - peaks; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; पुण्याणि (puṇyāṇi) - holy; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; प्रस्रवणानि (prasravaṇāni) - springs; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अनुपरिक्रम्य (anuparikramya) - having gone around; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as desired; उपस्पृश (upaspṛśa) - touch (i.e., bathe);]
(Peaks three, holy three, springs and all having gone around as desired touch (bathe).)
After circumambulating all the three peaks and the three holy springs as you wish, bathe (touch the water). (03-125-15)
शन्तनुश्चात्र कौन्तेय शुनकश्च नराधिप। नरनारायणौ चोभौ स्थानं प्राप्ताः सनातनम् ॥०३-१२५-१६॥
śantanuś cātra kaunteya śunakaś ca narādhipa। nara-nārāyaṇau ca ubhau sthānaṃ prāptāḥ sanātanam ॥03-125-16॥
[शन्तनुः (śantanuḥ) - Śantanu; (a proper noun, king's name); च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; (addressing Arjuna or Yudhiṣṭhira); शुनकः (śunakaḥ) - Śunaka; (a proper noun, sage's name); च (ca) - and; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; (addressing a king); नरनारायणौ (nara-nārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; (two sages, as a dual compound); च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; position; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have attained; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(Śantanu and here, O son of Kunti, Śunaka and, O lord of men, Nara and Nārāyaṇa also both the place attained eternal.)
Here, O son of Kunti, Śantanu and Śunaka, O lord of men, and both Nara and Nārāyaṇa have all attained the eternal place. (03-125-16)
इह नित्यशया देवाः पितरश्च महर्षिभिः। आर्चीकपर्वते तेपुस्तान्यजस्व युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-१२५-१७॥
iha nityaśayā devāḥ pitaraś ca maharṣibhiḥ. ārcīkaparvate tepus tān yajāsva yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-125-17॥
[इह (iha) - here; नित्यशया (nityaśayāḥ) - ever-reposing; always lying down; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; च (ca) - and; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by great sages; आर्चीकपर्वते (ārcīkaparvate) - on Ārcīka mountain; तेपुः (tepuḥ) - performed austerities; तान् (tān) - them; यजस्व (yajāsva) - worship; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Here, ever-reposing gods and ancestors with great sages on Ārcīka mountain performed austerities, them worship, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Here, the ever-reposing gods and ancestors together with great sages performed austerities on the Ārcīka mountain; worship them, O Yudhiṣṭhira. (03-125-17)
इह ते वै चरून्प्राश्नन्नृषयश्च विशां पते। यमुना चाक्षयस्रोताः कृष्णश्चेह तपोरतः ॥०३-१२५-१८॥

[इह (iha) - here; ते (te) - your; वै (vai) - indeed; चरून् (carūn) - oblations; प्राश्नन् (prāśnann) - ate; ऋषयश्च (ṛṣayaś ca) - and the sages; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; यमुना (yamunā) - Yamunā (river); च (ca) - and; अक्षयस्रोताः (akṣayasrotāḥ) - with inexhaustible current; कृष्णश्च (kṛṣṇaś ca) - and Kṛṣṇa; इह (iha) - here; तपोरतः (taporataḥ) - engaged in austerity;]
(Here, your indeed, the sages ate the oblations, O lord of men. The Yamunā with inexhaustible current, and Kṛṣṇa also here engaged in austerity.)
Here, O lord of men, your sages indeed consumed the oblations, and here the Yamunā flows with its inexhaustible current, and Kṛṣṇa also engaged in austerities here. (03-125-18)
यमौ च भीमसेनश्च कृष्णा चामित्रकर्शन। सर्वे चात्र गमिष्यामः सुकृशाः सुतपस्विनः ॥०३-१२५-१९॥
yamau ca bhīmasenaś ca kṛṣṇā cāmitrakarśana। sarve cātra gamiṣyāmaḥ sukṛśāḥ sutapasvinaḥ॥03-125-19॥

etatprasravaṇaṃ puṇyam indrasya manujādhipa। yatra dhātā vidhātā ca varuṇaś ca ūrdhvam āgatāḥ ॥03-125-20॥

iha te nyavasan rājan kṣāntāḥ paramadharmiṇaḥ। maitrāṇām ṛjubuddhīnām ayaṁ girivaraḥ śubhaḥ॥03-125-21॥

[अत्र (atra) - here; राजा (rājā) - the king; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - mighty-armed; मान्धाता (māndhātā) - Māndhātā; यजत (yajata) - he performed a sacrifice; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; सोमकः (somakaḥ) - Somaka; ददताम् (dadatām) - among givers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
