ब्रह्मन्यद्यद्यथा कार्यं तत्तत्कुरु तथा तथा। पुत्रकामतया सर्वं करिष्यामि वचस्तव ॥०३-१२८-१॥
brahmanyadyadyathā kāryaṃ tattat kuru tathā tathā। putrakāmatayā sarvaṃ kariṣyāmi vacas tava ॥03-128-1॥
[ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; यथा (yathā) - as; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; तत्तत् (tattat) - that very; कुरु (kuru) - do; तथा तथा (tathā tathā) - just so, accordingly; पुत्रकामतया (putrakāmatayā) - with desire for a son; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तव (tava) - your;]
(O Brahman, whatever as should be done, that do just so accordingly. With desire for a son, all I will do your speech.)
O Brahman, whatever is to be done in whatever manner, do that just so. Desiring a son, I will perform everything according to your instruction. (03-128-1)
लोमश उवाच॥

ततः स याजयामास सोमकं तेन जन्तुना। मातरस्तु बलात्पुत्रमपाकर्षुः कृपान्विताः ॥०३-१२८-२॥
tataḥ sa yājayāmāsa somakaṃ tena jantunā। mātarastu balāt putram apākarṣuḥ kṛpānvitāḥ ॥03-128-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; याजयामास (yājayāmāsa) - caused to be sacrificed; सोमकं (somakaṃ) - Somaka (the king); तेन (tena) - by that; जन्तुना (jantunā) - by Jantu; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - the mothers; तु (tu) - but; बलात् (balāt) - by force; पुत्रम् (putram) - the son; अपाकर्षुः (apākarṣuḥ) - drew away; कृपान्विताः (kṛpānvitāḥ) - filled with compassion;]
(Then he caused Somaka to sacrifice by that Jantu. But the mothers, by force, drew their son away, filled with compassion.)
Then he made Somaka perform the sacrifice with Jantu; but the mothers, filled with compassion, forcefully drew their son away. (03-128-2)
हा हताः स्मेति वाशन्त्यस्तीव्रशोकसमन्विताः। तं मातरः प्रत्यकर्षन्गृहीत्वा दक्षिणे करे ॥ सव्ये पाणौ गृहीत्वा तु याजकोऽपि स्म कर्षति ॥०३-१२८-३॥
hā hatāḥ smeti vāśantyastīvrāśokasamanvitāḥ। taṃ mātaraḥ pratyakarṣan gṛhītvā dakṣiṇe kare ॥ savye pāṇau gṛhītvā tu yājako'pi sma karṣati ॥03-128-3॥
[हा (hā) - alas; हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; स्म (sma) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; अशन्ति (aśanti) - cried out; अतीव (atīva) - excessively; शोक (śoka) - grief; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - filled; तं (taṃ) - him; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; प्रत्यकर्षन् (pratyakarṣan) - pulled towards; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - right; करे (kare) - hand; सव्ये (savye) - left; पाणौ (pāṇau) - hand; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; तु (tu) - but; याजकः (yājakaḥ) - priest; अपि (api) - also; स्म (sma) - indeed; कर्षति (karṣati) - draws;]
(alas slain indeed thus or cry out excessively grief filled; him mothers pulled towards having seized right hand; left hand having seized but priest also indeed draws;)
Alas! 'Slain, indeed!' or so they cried out, filled with excessive grief. His mothers pulled him, having seized his right hand. But seizing his left hand, the priest also indeed was pulling. (03-128-3)
कुररीणामिवार्तानामपाकृष्य तु तं सुतम्। विशस्य चैनं विधिना वपामस्य जुहाव सः ॥०३-१२८-४॥
kurarīṇām ivārtānām apākṛṣya tu taṃ sutam। viśasya ca enaṃ vidhinā vapām asya juhāva saḥ ॥03-128-4॥
[कुररीणाम् (kurarīṇām) - of female curlews; इव (iva) - like; as; आर्तानाम् (ārtānām) - of the afflicted; distressed; अपाकृष्य (apākṛṣya) - having drawn away; having separated; तु (tu) - but; तम् (tam) - that (him); सुतम् (sutam) - son; विशस्य (viśasya) - having killed; slain; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this (him); विधिना (vidhinā) - by the proper method; according to rule; वपाम् (vapām) - flesh; अस्य (asya) - his; जुहाव (juhāva) - he offered (into fire); सः (saḥ) - he;]
(But like the distressed female curlews, having drawn away that son, having killed him, he offered his flesh into fire according to rule.)
But, just as the distressed female curlews, he drew away that son, and having killed him, offered his flesh into the fire according to the prescribed method. (03-128-4)
वपायां हूयमानायां गन्धमाघ्राय मातरः। आर्ता निपेतुः सहसा पृथिव्यां कुरुनन्दन ॥ सर्वाश्च गर्भानलभंस्ततस्ताः पार्थिवाङ्गनाः ॥०३-१२८-५॥
vapāyāṃ hūyamānāyāṃ gandhamāghrāya mātaraḥ। ārtā nipetuḥ sahasā pṛthivyāṃ kurunandana॥ sarvāś ca garbhān alabhaṃs tatastāḥ pārthivāṅganāḥ॥03-128-5॥

(Upon the fat being offered, having smelled the odor, the mothers, distressed, fell down suddenly upon the earth, O joy of the Kurus. And all those royal ladies thereafter did not obtain offspring.)
When the fat was being offered and the mothers smelled the odor, they, being distressed, suddenly collapsed upon the earth, O joy of the Kurus. And then all those royal ladies were unable to bear children. (03-128-5)
ततो दशसु मासेषु सोमकस्य विशां पते। जज्ञे पुत्रशतं पूर्णं तासु सर्वासु भारत ॥०३-१२८-६॥
tato daśasu māseṣu somakasya viśāṃ pate। jajñe putraśataṃ pūrṇaṃ tāsu sarvāsu bhārata॥03-128-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; दशसु (daśasu) - in ten; मासेषु (māseṣu) - months (locative plural); सोमकस्य (somakasya) - of Somaka; विशां (viśām) - of kings; पते (pate) - O lord; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - hundred sons; पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - full, complete; तासु (tāsu) - among them (the women); सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - all; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thereafter, in ten months, O lord of kings Somaka, a full hundred sons were born among all of them, O Bhārata.)
After that, O Bhārata, in ten months, O lord of kings Somaka, a full hundred sons were born to all of them. (03-128-6)
जन्तुर्ज्येष्ठः समभवज्जनित्र्यामेव भारत। स तासामिष्ट एवासीन्न तथान्ये निजाः सुताः ॥०३-१२८-७॥
jantur jyeṣṭhaḥ samabhavad janitryām eva bhārata। sa tāsām iṣṭa eva āsīt na tathā anye nijāḥ sutāḥ ॥03-128-7॥
[जन्तुः (jantuḥ) - Jantu (proper name); ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; समभवत् (samabhavat) - was born; जनित्र्याम् (janitryām) - from (their) mother; (in the mother;) एव (eva) - only; indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (descendant of Bharata;) सः (saḥ) - he; तासाम् (tāsām) - of them; (of those women;) इष्टः (iṣṭaḥ) - beloved; एव (eva) - indeed; only; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; अन्ये (anye) - other; निजाः (nijāḥ) - one’s own; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons;]
(Jantu, the eldest, was born from (their) mother only, O Bhārata. He was indeed beloved of them; not so (were) the other own sons.)
O Bhārata, Jantu, being the eldest, was born of their mother and was especially beloved by them; the other sons, their own, were not regarded so. (03-128-7)
तच्च लक्षणमस्यासीत्सौवर्णं पार्श्व उत्तरे। तस्मिन्पुत्रशते चाग्र्यः स बभूव गुणैर्युतः ॥०३-१२८-८॥
tac ca lakṣaṇam asyāsīt sauvarṇaṃ pārśva uttare। tasmin putraśate ca agryaḥ sa babhūva guṇair yutaḥ॥03-128-8॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - mark; characteristic; अस्य (asya) - his; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सौवर्णम् (sauvarṇam) - golden; made of gold; पार्श्व (pārśva) - side; उत्तरे (uttare) - on the northern; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; पुत्रशते (putraśate) - among the hundred sons; च (ca) - and; आग्र्यः (agryaḥ) - foremost; सः (saḥ) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; was; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with qualities; with virtues; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; joined;]
(And that mark of his was golden on the northern side. Among the hundred sons, he was the foremost, endowed with virtues.)
That distinguishing feature of his was a golden mark on the northern side. Among the hundred sons, he became the foremost, endowed with virtues. (03-128-8)
ततः स लोकमगमत्सोमकस्य गुरुः परम्। अथ काले व्यतीते तु सोमकोऽप्यगमत्परम् ॥०३-१२८-९॥
tataḥ sa lokam agamat somakasya guruḥ param। atha kāle vyatīte tu somakaḥ api agamat param ॥03-128-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; लोकम् (lokam) - world; अगमत् (agamat) - went; सोमकस्य (somakasya) - of Somaka; गुरुः (guruḥ) - guru; परम् (param) - supreme (state); अथ (atha) - then; काले (kāle) - when time; व्यतीते (vyatīte) - had passed; तु (tu) - but; सोमकः (somakaḥ) - Somaka; अपि (api) - also; अगमत् (agamat) - went; परम् (param) - supreme (state);]
(Then, he went to the supreme world, the guru of Somaka. Then, when time had passed, but Somaka also went to the supreme state.)
Then, the guru of Somaka went to the highest world; after some time had passed, Somaka too went to the supreme state. (03-128-9)
अथ तं नरके घोरे पच्यमानं ददर्श सः। तमपृच्छत्किमर्थं त्वं नरके पच्यसे द्विज ॥०३-१२८-१०॥
atha taṃ narake ghore pacyamānaṃ dadarśa saḥ। tam apṛcchat kimartham tvaṃ narake pacyase dvija ॥03-128-10॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; नरके (narake) - in hell; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; पच्यमानं (pacyamānam) - being cooked; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - him; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नरके (narake) - in hell; पच्यसे (pacyase) - are being cooked; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born;]
(Then him in hell terrible being cooked he saw. Him asked, 'For what reason you in hell are being cooked, O twice-born?' (03-128-10))
Then he saw him being cooked in the terrible hell. He asked him, 'Why are you being cooked in hell, O twice-born?' (03-128-10)
तमब्रवीद्गुरुः सोऽथ पच्यमानोऽग्निना भृशम्। त्वं मया याजितो राजंस्तस्येदं कर्मणः फलम् ॥०३-१२८-११॥
tam abravīd guruḥ saḥ atha pachyamānaḥ agninā bhṛśam। tvaṃ mayā yājitaḥ rājan tasya idam karmaṇaḥ phalam॥03-128-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; पच्यमानः (pachyamānaḥ) - being burned; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; याजितः (yājitaḥ) - caused to perform sacrifice; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्य (tasya) - of that; इदम् (idam) - this; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of the act; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(The teacher said to him, he (while) being excessively burned by fire: You, O king, having been caused by me to perform the sacrifice, this is the fruit of that act.)
The teacher then said to him, as he was being severely burned by fire: 'O king, since you were made to perform the sacrifice by me, this is the result of that act.' (03-128-11)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स राजर्षिर्धर्मराजानमब्रवीत्। अहमत्र प्रवेक्ष्यामि मुच्यतां मम याजकः ॥ मत्कृते हि महाभागः पच्यते नरकाग्निना ॥०३-१२८-१२॥
etacchrutvā sa rājarṣirdharmarājānamabravīt। aham atra pravekṣyāmi mucyatāṃ mama yājakaḥ॥ matkṛte hi mahābhāgaḥ pacyate narakāgninā॥03-128-12॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (etac chrutvā) - having heard this; सः (saḥ) - he; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; धर्मराजानम् (dharmarājānam) - the Lord of Dharma (Yama); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अहम् (aham) - I; अत्र (atra) - here; प्रवेक्ष्यामि (pravekṣyāmi) - shall enter; मुच्यताम् (mucyatām) - let be released; मम (mama) - my; याजकः (yājakaḥ) - ritual officiant(priest); मत्कृते (matkṛte) - for my sake; हि (hi) - indeed; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - the highly fortunate one; पच्यते (pacyate) - is cooked (is tormented); नरकाग्निना (narakāgninā) - by the fire of hell;]
(Having heard this, that royal sage said to the Lord of Dharma: I shall enter here, let my ritual officiant be released. For my sake indeed, the highly fortunate one is being cooked by the fire of hell.)
Hearing this, the royal sage addressed Yama: "I will enter here; let my priest be freed. For my sake, the highly fortunate one is suffering in the fire of hell." (03-128-12)

नान्यः कर्तुः फलं राजन्नुपभुङ्क्ते कदाचन। इमानि तव दृश्यन्ते फलानि ददतां वर ॥०३-१२८-१३॥
nānyaḥ kartuḥ phalaṃ rājann upabhuṅkte kadācana। imāni tava dṛśyante phalāni dadatāṃ vara॥03-128-13॥
[नान्यः (nānyaḥ) - not another; कर्तुः (kartuḥ) - of the doer; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नुपभुङ्क्ते (na upabhuṅkte) - does not enjoy; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; इमानि (imāni) - these; तव (tava) - your; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; ददताम् (dadatām) - of those giving; वर (vara) - O best (one);]
(Not another of the doer fruit, O king, does not enjoy at any time; these your are seen fruits of those giving, O best (one).)
O king, no one other than the doer ever enjoys the fruit; these fruits of giving are seen as yours, O best one. (03-128-13)

पुण्यान्न कामये लोकानृतेऽहं ब्रह्मवादिनम्। इच्छाम्यहमनेनैव सह वस्तुं सुरालये ॥०३-१२८-१४॥
puṇyānna kāmaye lokānṛte'haṃ brahmavādinam। icchāmy aham anenaiva saha vastuṃ surālaye ॥03-128-14॥
[पुण्यान् (puṇyān) - the virtuous (worlds); न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; ऋते (ṛte) - without; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रह्मवादिनम् (brahmavādinam) - (the) Brahmavādin (sage); इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; अनेनैव (anenaiva) - with just this one; सह (saha) - together with; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to dwell; सुरालये (surālaye) - in the abode of the gods;]
(I do not desire the virtuous worlds without the Brahmavādin; I wish to dwell only with him in the abode of the gods.)
I do not wish for the heavenly worlds earned by virtue without the Brahmavādin; I only want to live together with him in the gods’ abode. (03-128-14)
नरके वा धर्मराज कर्मणास्य समो ह्यहम्। पुण्यापुण्यफलं देव सममस्त्वावयोरिदम् ॥०३-१२८-१५॥
narake vā dharmarāja karmaṇāsya samo hyaham। puṇyāpuṇyaphalaṃ deva samamastvāvayoridam ॥03-128-15॥
[नरके (narake) - in hell; वा (vā) - or; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - King of Dharma (Yama); कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act; अस्य (asya) - of this; समः (samaḥ) - equal; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; पुण्य (puṇya) - meritorious (deed); अपुण्य (apuṇya) - unmeritorious (deed); फलम् (phalam) - result; देव (deva) - O god; समम् (samam) - equal (is); अस्तु (astu) - let it be; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - for both of us; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(In hell or, O King of Dharma, by this act indeed I am equal. The result of merit and demerit, O god, let this be equal for both of us.)
Whether in hell or, O King of Dharma, by this act I am indeed your equal. May the result of merit and demerit, O god, be the same for both of us. (03-128-15)

यद्येवमीप्सितं राजन्भुङ्क्ष्वास्य सहितः फलम्। तुल्यकालं सहानेन पश्चात्प्राप्स्यसि सद्गतिम् ॥०३-१२८-१६॥
yady evam īpsitaṁ rājan bhuṅkṣvā asya sahitaḥ phalam। tulyakālaṁ saha anena paścāt prāpsyasi sadgatim॥03-128-16॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एवम् (evam) - thus; ईप्सितम् (īpsitam) - desired; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; अस्य (asya) - this; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; तुल्यकालम् (tulyakālam) - at the same time; सह (saha) - with; अनेन (anena) - him; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; सद्गतिम् (sadgatim) - good state;]
(If thus the desired O king enjoy this together fruit; at the same time with him afterwards you will obtain good state;)
If this is your wish, O king, enjoy this fruit together with him; at the same time, afterwards, you will attain the good state. (03-128-16)

स चकार तथा सर्वं राजा राजीवलोचनः। पुनश्च लेभे लोकान्स्वान्कर्मणा निर्जिताञ्शुभान् ॥ सह तेनैव विप्रेण गुरुणा स गुरुप्रियः ॥०३-१२८-१७॥
sa cakāra tathā sarvaṃ rājā rājīvalocanaḥ। punaś ca lebhe lokān svān karmaṇā nirjitān śubhān॥ saha tenaiva vipreṇa guruṇā sa gurupriyaḥ॥03-128-17॥
[स (sa) - he; चकार (cakāra) - did; तथा (tathā) - so; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; राजा (rājā) - king; राजीवलोचनः (rājīvalocanaḥ) - lotus-eyed (one); पुनश्च (punaś ca) - again and; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; स्वान् (svān) - his own; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; निर्जितान् (nirjitān) - conquered; शुभान् (śubhān) - auspicious; सह (saha) - with; तेनैव (tenaiva) - with that very; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - Brahmin; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the preceptor; स (sa) - he; गुरुप्रियः (gurupriyaḥ) - dear to the guru;]
(He did so all, the king, the lotus-eyed. Again and, he obtained his own worlds, by action, conquered, auspicious. With that very Brahmin, by the preceptor, he, dear to the guru. (03-128-17))
That lotus-eyed king did all just so. Again, by his actions, he obtained his own auspicious, conquered worlds. He, dear to his guru, was with that very Brahmin and preceptor. (03-128-17)
एष तस्याश्रमः पुण्यो य एषोऽग्रे विराजते। क्षान्त उष्यात्र षड्रात्रं प्राप्नोति सुगतिं नरः ॥०३-१२८-१८॥
eṣa tasya āśramaḥ puṇyaḥ ya eṣaḥ agre virājate । kṣānta uṣya atra ṣaḍ-rātram prāpnoti su-gatim naraḥ ॥03-128-18॥
[एष (eṣaḥ) - this; तस्य (tasya) - his; आश्रमः (āśramaḥ) - hermitage; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - holy; य (yaḥ) - which; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; अग्रे (agre) - ahead; विराजते (virājate) - shines; क्षान्त (kṣāntaḥ) - forgiven; उष्य (uṣya) - having stayed; अत्र (atra) - here; षड्रात्रम् (ṣaḍ-rātram) - six nights; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; सुगतिम् (su-gatim) - good path; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(This his hermitage holy which this ahead shines. Forgiven having stayed here six nights attains good path man.)
This is his holy hermitage which shines ahead; a man who has been forgiven, staying here for six nights, attains a good path. (03-128-18)
एतस्मिन्नपि राजेन्द्र वत्स्यामो विगतज्वराः। षड्रात्रं नियतात्मानः सज्जीभव कुरूद्वह ॥०३-१२८-१९॥
etasminn api rājendra vatsyāmo vigatajvarāḥ। ṣaḍrātraṃ niyatātmānaḥ sajjībhava kurūdvaha ॥03-128-19॥
[एतस्मिन् (etasmin) - in this (place); अपि (api) - also; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; वत्स्यामः (vatsyāmaḥ) - we shall stay; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - freed from affliction; षड्रात्रम् (ṣaḍrātram) - six nights; नियतात्मानः (niyatātmānaḥ) - self-controlled; सज्जीभव (sajjībhava) - be prepared; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus;]
(In this (place) also, O best of kings, we shall stay, freed from affliction; for six nights, self-controlled; be prepared, O best of the Kurus.)
Here also, O King, we shall stay free from affliction; remain self-controlled for six nights, and be prepared, O best of the Kurus. (03-128-19)
