यः कथ्यते मन्त्रविदग्र्यबुद्धि; रौद्दालकिः श्वेतकेतुः पृथिव्याम्। तस्याश्रमं पश्य नरेन्द्र पुण्यं; सदाफलैरुपपन्नं महीजैः ॥०३-१३२-१॥
yaḥ kathyate mantravid-agryabuddhi; rauddālakiḥ śvetaketuḥ pṛthivyām। tasyāśramaṁ paśya narendra puṇyaṁ; sadāphalair-upapannaṁ mahījaiḥ ॥03-132-1॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is said; मन्त्रविद-अग्र्यबुद्धि (mantravid-agryabuddhi) - knower of mantras, of the highest intellect; रौद्दालकिः (rauddālakiḥ) - son of Uddālaka (Rauddālaki); श्वेतकेतुः (śvetaketuḥ) - Śvetaketu; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; तस्य (tasya) - his; आश्रमं (āśramaṁ) - hermitage; पश्य (paśya) - see; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; पुण्यं (puṇyaṁ) - holy; सदा-फलैः (sadāphalaiḥ) - with always-fruitful; उपपन्नं (upapannaṁ) - endowed; महीजैः (mahījaiḥ) - by products of the earth;]
(Who is said (to be) the knower of mantras, of the highest intellect, Rauddālaki Śvetaketu, on earth; his hermitage, see, O king, holy, endowed with always-fruitful (trees) by products of the earth.)
O king, see the holy hermitage of Rauddālaki Śvetaketu, who is called the foremost knower of mantras and of supreme intellect on earth; it is endowed with ever-fruit-bearing trees born of the earth. (03-132-1)
साक्षादत्र श्वेतकेतुर्ददर्श; सरस्वतीं मानुषदेहरूपाम्। वेत्स्यामि वाणीमिति सम्प्रवृत्तां; सरस्वतीं श्वेतकेतुर्बभाषे ॥०३-१३२-२॥
sākṣādatra śvetaketurdadarśa; sarasvatīṃ mānuṣadeharūpām. vetsyāmi vāṇīmiti sampravṛttāṃ; sarasvatīṃ śvetaketurbabhāṣe ॥03-132-2॥

(Directly here Śvetaketu saw Sarasvatī having the form of a human body; "I shall know speech" thus set forth Sarasvatī Śvetaketu addressed.)
Here, Śvetaketu directly saw Sarasvatī in human form; as Sarasvatī began to depart, Śvetaketu addressed her, saying: "I shall know speech." (03-132-2)
तस्मिन्काले ब्रह्मविदां वरिष्ठा; वास्तां तदा मातुलभागिनेयौ। अष्टावक्रश्चैव कहोडसूनु; रौद्दालकिः श्वेतकेतुश्च राजन् ॥०३-१३२-३॥
tasmin-kāle brahmavidāṃ variṣṭhā; vāstāṃ tadā mātulabhāgineyau. aṣṭāvakraś-caiva kahoḍasūnu; rauddālakiḥ śvetaketuś-ca rājan ॥03-132-3॥
[तस्मिन्काले (tasmin kāle) - at that time; ब्रह्मविदां (brahmavidām) - of the knowers of Brahman; श्रेष्ठा (variṣṭhā) - the foremost ones; वास्तां (vāstāṃ) - were present; तदा (tadā) - then; मातुलभागिनेयौ (mātulabhāgineyau) - the maternal uncle and nephew (cousins); अष्टावक्रश्चैव (aṣṭāvakraś ca eva) - and indeed Aṣṭāvakra; कहोड़सूनु (kahoḍasūnu) - son of Kahodha; रौद्दालकिः (rauddālakiḥ) - Rauddalaki; श्वेतकेतुश्च (śvetaketuś ca) - and Śvetaketu; राजन् (rājan) - O king;]
(At that time, of the knowers of Brahman the foremost ones were present; then the maternal uncle and nephew, and indeed Aṣṭāvakra, the son of Kahoda; Rauddalaki, Śvetaketu also, O king.)
At that time, O king, the foremost of the knowers of Brahman—Aṣṭāvakra, the son of Kahoda, Rauddalaki, Śvetaketu, and the maternal uncle and nephew—were present. (03-132-3)
विदेहराजस्य महीपतेस्तौ; विप्रावुभौ मातुलभागिनेयौ। प्रविश्य यज्ञायतनं विवादे; बन्दिं निजग्राहतुरप्रमेयम् ॥०३-१३२-४॥
videharājasya mahīpates tau; viprāv ubhau mātula-bhāgineyau। praviśya yajñāyatanaṃ vivāde; bandiṃ nijagrāhatur aprameyam॥03-132-4॥
[विदेहराजस्य (videharājasya) - of the King of Videha; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the ruler of the earth; तौ (tau) - those two; विप्रौ (viprau) - Brahmins; उभौ (ubhau) - both; मातुलभागिनेयौ (mātula-bhāgineyau) - maternal uncle and nephew; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; यज्ञायतनम् (yajñāyatanam) - the sacrificial hall; विवादे (vivāde) - in dispute; बन्दिम् (bandim) - Bandi (proper name, the court bard); निजग्राहतुः (nijagrāhatuḥ) - they both seized; अप्रमेयम् (aprameyam) - immeasurable;]
(Of the King of Videha, of the ruler of the earth, those two Brahmins — both maternal uncle and nephew — having entered the sacrificial hall, in dispute, Bandi, they both seized, the immeasurable.)
Those two Brahmins, uncle and nephew, both belonging to the king of Videha, entered the sacrificial hall, and during a dispute, both seized Bandi, the incomparable bard. (03-132-4)

कथम्प्रभावः स बभूव विप्र; स्तथायुक्तं यो निजग्राह बन्दिम्। अष्टावक्रः केन चासौ बभूव; तत्सर्वं मे लोमश शंस तत्त्वम् ॥०३-१३२-५॥
kathamprabhāvaḥ sa babhūva vipra; stathāyuktaṃ yo nijagrāha bandim. aṣṭāvakraḥ kena cāsau babhūva; tatsarvaṃ me lomaśa śaṃsa tattvam ॥03-132-5॥
[कथम्प्रभावः (katham-prabhāvaḥ) - how-powerful; how influential; सः (saḥ) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; स्तथा (stathā) - thus; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - joined; being competent; यः (yaḥ) - who; निजग्राह (nijagrāha) - captured; बन्दिम् (bandim) - the bards; अष्टावक्रः (aṣṭāvakraḥ) - Aṣṭāvakra (proper noun); केन (kena) - by whom; how; च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; मे (me) - to me; लोमश (lomaśa) - Lomaśa (proper noun, vocative); शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth;]
(How powerful did he become, the brāhmaṇa; thus competent who captured the bard? Aṣṭāvakra, how and by whom did he become? All that to me, O Lomaśa, tell the truth.)
How did that brāhmaṇa become so powerful as to capture the bard thus? By whom and how did Aṣṭāvakra become such? O Lomaśa, tell me all that truth. (03-132-5)

उद्दालकस्य नियतः शिष्य एको; नाम्ना कहोडेति बभूव राजन्। शुश्रूषुराचार्यवशानुवर्ती; दीर्घं कालं सोऽध्ययनं चकार ॥०३-१३२-६॥
uddālakasya niyataḥ śiṣya eko; nāmnā kahoḍeti babhūva rājan. śuśrūṣurācāryavaśānuvartī; dīrghaṃ kālaṃ so'dhyayanaṃ cakāra ॥03-132-6॥
[उद्दालकस्य (uddālakasya) - of Uddālaka; नियतः (niyataḥ) - devoted; शिष्य (śiṣya) - disciple; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; कहोडेति (kahoḍa iti) - as 'Kahoḍa'; बभूव (babhūva) - was; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शुश्रूषुः (śuśrūṣuḥ) - attendant; आचार्यवशानुवर्ती (ācāryavaśānuvartī) - one who follows the authority of the teacher; दीर्घं (dīrghaṃ) - long; कालं (kālam) - time; सः (saḥ) - he; अध्ययनं (adhyayanaṃ) - study; चकार (cakāra) - did;]
(Of Uddālaka a devoted disciple, one by name 'Kahoḍa', was, O king. Attendant, follower of the authority of the teacher, for a long time he study did.)
O king, there was a devoted disciple of Uddālaka, by name 'Kahoḍa'. He was attentive, obedient to his teacher's authority, and for a long time he engaged in study. (03-132-6)
तं वै विप्राः पर्यभवंश्च शिष्या; स्तं च ज्ञात्वा विप्रकारं गुरुः सः। तस्मै प्रादात्सद्य एव श्रुतं च; भार्यां च वै दुहितरं स्वां सुजाताम् ॥०३-१३२-७॥
taṃ vai viprāḥ paryabhavaṃś ca śiṣyā; staṃ ca jñātvā viprakāraṃ guruḥ saḥ. tasmai prādāt sadya eva śrutaṃ ca; bhāryāṃ ca vai duhitaraṃ svāṃ sujātām ॥03-132-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the brāhmaṇas; पर्यभवंश्च (paryabhavaṃś ca) - insulted and; शिष्या (śiṣyā) - the students; स्तं (staṃ) - him; च (ca) - and; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; विप्रकारं (viprakāraṃ) - insult; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; सद्य (sadya) - immediately; एव (eva) - indeed; श्रुतं (śrutam) - Vedic knowledge; च (ca) - and; भार्यां (bhāryāṃ) - wife; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; दुहितरं (duhitaraṃ) - daughter; स्वां (svāṃ) - his own; सुजाताम् (sujātām) - well-born; ॥०३-१३२-७॥ (॥03-132-7॥) - ;]
(Him indeed the brāhmaṇas and the students insulted; him and having known the insult, the teacher he (did so). To him he gave immediately indeed Vedic knowledge and wife and indeed his own daughter, well-born.)
The brāhmaṇas and the students indeed insulted him; recognizing this insult, the teacher gave him at once Vedic knowledge as well as a wife—his own well-born daughter. (03-132-7)
तस्या गर्भः समभवदग्निकल्पः; सोऽधीयानं पितरमथाभ्युवाच। सर्वां रात्रिमध्ययनं करोषि; नेदं पितः सम्यगिवोपवर्तते ॥०३-१३२-८॥
tasyā garbhaḥ samabhavad agnikalpaḥ; so-'dhīyānaṁ pitaram athābhyuvāca. sarvāṁ rātrim adhyayanaṁ karoṣi; nedaṁ pitaḥ samyag iva upavartate ॥03-132-8॥
[तस्या (tasyā) - of her; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; समभवत् (samabhavat) - was born; अग्निकल्पः (agnikalpaḥ) - like fire; सः (saḥ) - he; अधीयानम् (adhīyānam) - studying; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; अथ (atha) - then; अभ्युवाच (abhyuvāca) - addressed; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - all; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; अध्ययनम् (adhyananam) - study; करोषि (karoṣi) - you do; न (na) - not; इदम् (idam) - this; पितः (pitaḥ) - father; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; इव (iva) - as if; उपवर्तते (upavartate) - proceeds;]
(Of her the embryo like fire was born; he, studying, then addressed (his) father. All night (you) do study; this, father, does not proceed properly as if.)
Her embryo, like fire, was born; he, while studying, then addressed his father: "You study the entire night; this, father, does not seem to proceed properly." (03-132-8)
उपालब्धः शिष्यमध्ये महर्षिः; स तं कोपादुदरस्थं शशाप। यस्मात्कुक्षौ वर्तमानो ब्रवीषि; तस्माद्वक्रो भवितास्यष्टकृत्वः ॥०३-१३२-९॥
upālabdhaḥ śiṣyamadhye maharṣiḥ; sa taṃ kopād udarasthaṃ śaśāpa. yasmāt kukṣau vartamāno bravīṣi; tasmād vakro bhavitāsy aṣṭakṛtvaḥ ॥03-132-9॥
[उपालब्धः (upālabdhaḥ) - having been reproached; शिष्य मध्ये (śiṣya-madhye) - in the midst of the disciples; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - the great sage; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् (tam) - him; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; उदरस्थम् (udarastham) - situated in (the mother’s) belly; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; कुक्षौ (kukṣau) - in the womb; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - remaining; ब्रवीषि (bravīṣi) - you speak; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वक्रः (vakraḥ) - crooked; भविता (bhavitā) - will become; अस्य (asya) - he; अष्टकृत्वः (aṣṭakṛtvaḥ) - eight times;]
(Having been reproached in the midst of the disciples, the great sage, he, from anger, cursed him situated in (the mother’s) belly. Because, remaining in the womb, you speak, therefore, crooked will become he, eight times.)
Reproached before his disciples, the great sage, seized by anger, cursed the unborn child, saying, 'Because you speak while still in the womb, therefore, you will become crooked eight times.' (03-132-9)
स वै तथा वक्र एवाभ्यजाय; दष्टावक्रः प्रथितो वै महर्षिः। तस्यासीद्वै मातुलः श्वेतकेतुः; स तेन तुल्यो वयसा बभूव ॥०३-१३२-१०॥
sa vai tathā vakra evābhyajāya; daṣṭāvakraḥ prathito vai maharṣiḥ. tasyāsīdvai mātulaḥ śvetaketuḥ; sa tena tulyo vayasā babhūva ॥03-132-10॥

(He indeed thus, Vakra, was born; Daṣṭāvakra, renowned indeed, great sage. Of him there was indeed a maternal uncle Śvetaketu; he with him equal in age became. (03-132-10))
He was thus born as Vakra; Daṣṭāvakra, who became renowned as a great sage. He had a maternal uncle named Śvetaketu, who was of the same age as him. (03-132-10)
सम्पीड्यमाना तु तदा सुजाता; विवर्धमानेन सुतेन कुक्षौ। उवाच भर्तारमिदं रहोगता; प्रसाद्य हीनं वसुना धनार्थिनी ॥०३-१३२-११॥
sampīḍyamānā tu tadā sujātā; vivardhamānena sutena kukṣau. uvāca bhartāram idaṃ rahogatā; prasādya hīnaṃ vasunā dhanārthinī ॥03-132-11॥
[सम्पीड्यमाना (sampīḍyamānā) - being pressed; being burdened; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; सुजाता (sujātā) - Sujata (proper name, feminine); विवर्धमानेन (vivardhamānena) - growing; increasing; सुतेन (sutena) - by the son; कुक्षौ (kukṣau) - in the womb; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - to her husband; इदं (idaṃ) - this; रहोगता (rahogatā) - having gone in private; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; having pleased; हीनम् (hīnam) - deprived; lacking; वसुना (vasunā) - in wealth; with riches; धनार्थिनी (dhanārthinī) - seeking wealth; one desiring wealth;]
(But then Sujata, being burdened in the womb by the growing son, having gone in private, said this to her husband, having propitiated him—being deprived of wealth, she, seeking riches.)
At that time, Sujata, feeling burdened in her womb by the growing son, sought a private moment and, being in want of wealth and desiring riches, respectfully spoke these words to her husband. (03-132-11)
कथं करिष्याम्यधना महर्षे; मासश्चायं दशमो वर्तते मे। न चास्ति ते वसु किञ्चित्प्रजाता; येनाहमेतामापदं निस्तरेयम् ॥०३-१३२-१२॥
kathaṁ kariṣyāmy adhanā maharṣe; māsaś cāyaṁ daśamo vartate me. na cāsti te vasu kiñcit prajātā; yena aham etām āpadaṁ nistareyam ॥03-132-12॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - shall do; अधना (adhanā) - without wealth; महार्षे (maharṣe) - O great sage; मासः (māsaḥ) - month; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; दशमः (daśamaḥ) - tenth; वर्तते (vartate) - is passing; मे (me) - for me; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्ति (asti) - there is; ते (te) - to you (yours); वसु (vasu) - wealth; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; प्रजाताः (prajātāḥ) - offspring; children; येन (yena) - by which; अहम् (aham) - I; एताम् (etām) - this; आपदं (āpadaṁ) - difficulty; calamity; निस्तरेयम् (nistareyam) - might cross over;]
(How shall I, without wealth, O great sage, do (this); and this is the tenth month passing for me. And there is not to you even a little wealth, nor children; by which I might cross over this difficulty.)
O great sage, how shall I act, being without wealth, when this is already my tenth month? And you have neither wealth nor any children by which I could overcome this difficulty. (03-132-12)
उक्तस्त्वेवं भार्यया वै कहोडो; वित्तस्यार्थे जनकमथाभ्यगच्छत्। स वै तदा वादविदा निगृह्य; निमज्जितो बन्दिनेहाप्सु विप्रः ॥०३-१३२-१३॥
uktas tvaivaṃ bhāryayā vai kahoḍo; vittasyārthe janakam athābhyagacchat. sa vai tadā vādavidā nigṛhya; nimajjito bandinehāpsu vipraḥ ॥03-132-13॥
[उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken (to); त्वेवम् (tvaivaṃ) - thus (in this way); भार्यया (bhāryayā) - by the wife; वै (vai) - indeed; कहोडः (kahoḍaḥ) - Kahoḍa (proper noun); वित्तस्यार्थे (vittasyārthe) - for the sake of wealth; जनकम् (janakam) - Janaka (proper noun); अथ (atha) - then; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; वादविदा (vādavidā) - by the expert in disputation; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having subdued; निमज्जितः (nimajjitaḥ) - plunged; बन्दिना (bandinā) - by Bandi (proper noun, by the bards); इह (iha) - here; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa (sage);]
(Spoken thus by his wife indeed Kahoḍa, for the sake of wealth, Janaka then approached. He indeed then by the disputation-expert having subdued, plunged by Bandi here in the waters the Brāhmaṇa.)
Thus addressed by his wife, Kahoḍa for the sake of wealth went to Janaka. Then he, subdued by the expert in disputation, was by Bandi here plunged into the waters, the Brāhmaṇa. (03-132-13)
उद्दालकस्तं तु तदा निशम्य; सूतेन वादेऽप्सु तथा निमज्जितम्। उवाच तां तत्र ततः सुजाता; मष्टावक्रे गूहितव्योऽयमर्थः ॥०३-१३२-१४॥
uddālakas taṃ tu tadā niśamya; sūtena vāde'psu tathā nimajjitam. uvāca tāṃ tatra tataḥ sujātā; maṣṭāvakre gūhitavyo'yam arthaḥ ॥03-132-14॥

(Uddālaka, him but then having heard; by the charioteer in the dispute, in the waters, thus immersed. Said (to) her there then Sujātā: To Maṣṭāvakra this matter ought to be concealed.)
Then Uddālaka, having heard that he had been thus immersed in the dispute in the waters by the charioteer, spoke to Sujātā there: "This matter ought to be concealed from Maṣṭāvakra." (03-132-14)
ररक्ष सा चाप्यति तं सुमन्त्रं; जातोऽप्येवं न स शुश्राव विप्रः। उद्दालकं पितृवच्चापि मेने; अष्टावक्रो भ्रातृवच्छ्वेतकेतुम् ॥०३-१३२-१५॥
rarakṣa sā cāpy ati taṃ sumantraṃ; jāto'py evaṃ na sa śuśrāva vipraḥ. uddālakaṃ pitṛ-vac cāpi mene; aṣṭāvakro bhrātṛ-vac chvetaketam ॥03-132-15॥

(She also very much protected that Sumantra; even though born thus, the brāhmaṇa did not listen. He considered Uddālaka like a father and Aṣṭāvakra considered Śvetaketu like a brother.)

(Then, in the twelfth year, Śvetaketu drew Raṣṭāvakra, who was seated on the lap of (his) father, away, having taken him by the hand, weeping; (he) said, "This is not your father's lap.")

(Which harsh word spoken by him at that time, remaining in his heart, of him there was great pain. Having gone to the house, (his) mother, weeping, he asked this: "Where indeed is my father thus".)

(Then Sujata, having the form of ultimate truth, being frightened by the curse, indeed declared all. That indeed, the truth, having understood all of the mother, thus he said to Śvetaketu, that sage.)
Then Sujata, who was of the nature of absolute truth, being afraid due to the curse, revealed everything. Having understood the whole truth of the mother, the sage thus spoke to Śvetaketu. (03-132-18)
गच्छाव यज्ञं जनकस्य राज्ञो; बह्वाश्चर्यः श्रूयते तस्य यज्ञः। श्रोष्यावोऽत्र ब्राह्मणानां विवाद; मन्नं चाग्र्यं तत्र भोक्ष्यावहे च ॥ विचक्षणत्वं च भविष्यते नौ; शिवश्च सौम्यश्च हि ब्रह्मघोषः ॥०३-१३२-१९॥
gacchāva yajñaṃ janakasya rājño; bahvāścaryaḥ śrūyate tasya yajñaḥ. śroṣyāvo'tra brāhmaṇānāṃ vivāda; mannaṃ cāgryaṃ tatra bhokṣyāvahe ca ॥ vicakṣaṇatvaṃ ca bhaviṣyate nau; śivaś ca saumyaś ca hi brahmaghoṣaḥ ॥03-132-19॥

(Let us go to the sacrifice of Janaka the king; much wonder is heard of his sacrifice. Let us hear here the discussion of the Brāhmaṇas, and let us eat excellent food there as well. Discernment will result to us, and the brāhmaṇical chanting is indeed auspicious and gentle. (03-132-19))
Let us go to the sacrifice of King Janaka—much that is wonderful is said of his sacrifice. Let us listen there to the debates of the Brāhmaṇas, and partake also in the finest food. Discernment will come to us, and truly, the brāhmaṇical chanting is both auspicious and gentle. (03-132-19)
