अन्धस्य पन्था बधिरस्य पन्थाः; स्त्रियः पन्था वैवधिकस्य पन्थाः। राज्ञः पन्था ब्राह्मणेनासमेत्य; समेत्य तु ब्राह्मणस्यैव पन्थाः ॥०३-१३३-१॥
andhasya panthā badhirasya panthāḥ; striyaḥ panthā vaivadhikasya panthāḥ. rājñaḥ panthā brāhmaṇenasametya; sametya tu brāhmaṇasyaiva panthāḥ ॥03-133-1॥
[अन्धस्य (andhasya) - of the blind man; पन्था (panthā) - path; बधिरस्य (badhirasya) - of the deaf man; पन्थाः (panthāḥ) - paths; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; पन्था (panthā) - path; वैवधिकस्य (vaivadhikasya) - of the litigant; पन्थाः (panthāḥ) - paths; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; पन्था (panthā) - path; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the Brāhmaṇa; असमेत्य (asametya) - not having met; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; तु (tu) - but; ब्राह्मणस्यैव (brāhmaṇasyaiva) - of the Brāhmaṇa indeed; पन्थाः (panthāḥ) - path;]
(Of the blind man path, of the deaf man paths; women path, of the litigant paths. Of the king path, by the Brāhmaṇa not having met; but having met, of the Brāhmaṇa indeed path. (03-133-1))
The path of the blind is that of the deaf; the path of women is that of the litigant. The path of the king is not to be joined by the Brāhmaṇa; but if joined, it is indeed the path of the Brāhmaṇa. (03-133-1)
राजोवाच॥

पन्था अयं तेऽद्य मया निसृष्टो; येनेच्छसे तेन कामं व्रजस्व। न पावको विद्यते वै लघीया; निन्द्रोऽपि नित्यं नमते ब्राह्मणानाम् ॥०३-१३३-२॥
panthā ayaṃ te'dya mayā nisṛṣṭo; yena icchase tena kāmaṃ vrajasva. na pāvako vidyate vai laghīyā; indro'pi nityaṃ namate brāhmaṇānām ॥03-133-2॥
[पन्था (panthā) - path; अयं (ayaṃ) - this; ते (te) - for you; अद्य (adya) - today; मया (mayā) - by me; निसृष्टः (nisṛṣṭaḥ) - released; येन (yena) - by which; इच्छसे (icchase) - you wish; तेन (tena) - by that; कामम् (kāmam) - as you desire; व्रजस्व (vrajasva) - go; न (na) - not; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - the fire; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; वै (vai) - indeed; लघीया (laghīyā) - lighter; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - also; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; नमते (namate) - bows; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - to the Brāhmaṇas;]
(This path for you today by me is released; by which you wish, by that, as you desire, go. Not the fire exists indeed lighter; Indra also always bows to the Brāhmaṇas. (03-133-2))
Today I have set this path before you; go as you desire by whichever path you wish. There is indeed nothing lighter than fire; even Indra always bows to the Brāhmaṇas. (03-133-2)

यज्ञं द्रष्टुं प्राप्तवन्तौ स्व तात; कौतूहलं नौ बलवद्वै विवृद्धम्। आवां प्राप्तावतिथी सम्प्रवेशं; काङ्क्षावहे द्वारपते तवाज्ञाम् ॥०३-१३३-३॥
yajñaṃ draṣṭuṃ prāptavantau sva tāta; kautūhalaṃ nau balavadvai vivṛddham। āvāṃ prāptāvatithī sampraveśaṃ; kāṅkṣāvahe dvārapate tavājñām ॥03-133-3॥

(Sacrifice to see having arrived O own father; curiosity our indeed strong grown. We two having come as guests entry we two desire O lord of the gate, your command.)
O dear father, we two have come to see the sacrifice; our curiosity has truly grown strong. Having arrived as guests, we both request your permission, O gatekeeper, to enter. (03-133-3)
ऐन्द्रद्युम्नेर्यज्ञदृशाविहावां; विवक्षू वै जनकेन्द्रं दिदृक्षू। न वै क्रोधाद्व्याधिनैवोत्तमेन; संयोजय द्वारपाल क्षणेन ॥०३-१३३-४॥
aindradyumner yajñadṛśāv ihāvāṁ; vivakṣū vai janakendraṁ didṛkṣū। na vai krodhād vyādhi-naiva uttamena; saṁyojaya dvārapāla kṣaṇena॥03-133-4॥

(Of Indradyumna, the sacrificer, here we both, wishing to speak, indeed the lord of men, wishing to see. Not indeed out of anger or disease, by the excellent one; let them be joined, O doorkeeper, immediately.)
We two, who are the sacrificer and Indradyumna, have come here wishing to speak and to see the lord of men. Not out of anger or by reason of disease, but by the excellent one; O doorkeeper, permit our admission at once. (03-133-4)
द्वारपाल उवाच॥

बन्देः समादेशकरा वयं स्म; निबोध वाक्यं च मयेर्यमाणम्। न वै बालाः प्रविशन्त्यत्र विप्रा; वृद्धा विद्वांसः प्रविशन्ति द्विजाग्र्याः ॥०३-१३३-५॥
bandeḥ samādeśakarā vayaṁ sma; nibodha vākyaṁ ca mayeryamāṇam. na vai bālāḥ praviśanty atra viprā; vṛddhā vidvāṁsaḥ praviśanti dvijāgryāḥ ॥03-133-5॥
[बन्देः (bandeḥ) - of the master; (from 'bandin' or 'bandin', a master, lord); समादेशकरा (samādeśakarā) - who carry out the command; (samādeśa - order, command; karāḥ - doers, performers); वयं (vayaṁ) - we; स्म (sma) - indeed; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - the statement; च (ca) - and; मयेर्यमाणम् (mayā iḥ yamaṇam) - being spoken by me; (mayā - by me; iḥ - speech; yamaṇam - being carried / delivered); न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; बालाः (bālāḥ) - boys; children; novices; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; अत्र (atra) - here; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - priests; sages; वृद्धा (vṛddhāḥ) - the aged; elders; विद्वांसः (vidvāṁsaḥ) - the learned; wise; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; द्विजाग्र्याः (dvijāgryāḥ) - the foremost of the twice-born; best Brāhmaṇas;]
(Of the master, performers of the command, we indeed; understand the statement and being spoken by me. Not indeed children enter here, O sages; aged learned foremost of the twice-born enter.)
We are the performers of the master's command; listen to the statement now being spoken by me. Here, O sages, children do not enter; only the aged, learned, foremost among the twice-born enter. (03-133-5)

यद्यत्र वृद्धेषु कृतः प्रवेशो; युक्तं मम द्वारपाल प्रवेष्टुम्। वयं हि वृद्धाश्चरितव्रताश्च; वेदप्रभावेन प्रवेशनार्हाः ॥०३-१३३-६॥
yadyatra vṛddheṣu kṛtaḥ praveśo; yuktaṃ mama dvārapāla praveṣṭum। vayaṃ hi vṛddhāścaritavratāśca; vedaprabhāvena praveśanārhāḥ ॥03-133-6॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अत्र (atra) - here; वृद्धेषु (vṛddheṣu) - among the elders; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been made; प्रवेशः (praveśaḥ) - entry; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - proper; मम (mama) - for me; द्वारपाल (dvārapāla) - O doorkeeper; प्रवेष्टुम् (praveṣṭum) - to enter; वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; वृद्धाः (vṛddhāḥ) - elders; चरितव्रताः (caritavratāḥ) - those who have practiced vows; च (ca) - and; वेदप्रभावेन (vedaprabhāvena) - by the power of the Veda; प्रवेशनार्हाः (praveśanārhāḥ) - worthy of entry;]
(If here among the elders entry has been made, it is proper for me, O doorkeeper, to enter. We indeed are elders and have practiced vows, and by the power of the Veda, worthy of entry.)
If entry has been permitted among the elders here, it is proper for me to enter, O doorkeeper. For we are elders, have observed our vows, and by the power of the Veda, are worthy of admittance. (03-133-6)
शुश्रूषवश्चापि जितेन्द्रियाश्च; ज्ञानागमे चापि गताः स्म निष्ठाम्। न बाल इत्यवमन्तव्यमाहु; र्बालोऽप्यग्निर्दहति स्पृश्यमानः ॥०३-१३३-७॥
śuśrūṣavaś cāpi jitendriyāś ca; jñānāgame cāpi gatāḥ sma niṣṭhām। na bāla ity avamantavyam āhur; bālo'py agnir dahati spṛśyamānaḥ ॥03-133-7॥
[शुश्रूषवः (śuśrūṣavaḥ) - desiring to hear; (those who wish to listen); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - with senses conquered; (self-controlled); च (ca) - and; ज्ञानागमे (jñānāgame) - in acquisition of knowledge; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गताः (gatāḥ) - those who have reached; स्म (sma) - (indeed); निष्ठाम् (niṣṭhām) - steadfastness; (determined state); न (na) - not; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; (boy); इति (iti) - thus; अवमन्तव्यम् (avamantavyam) - should be despised; (should be disrespected); आहु: (āhuḥ) - they say; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; (boy); अपि (api) - even; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; दहति (dahati) - burns; स्पृश्यमानः (spṛśyamānaḥ) - when being touched;]
(Desiring to hear and self-controlled, and those who have indeed reached steadfastness in the acquisition of knowledge. Not, 'child' thus should be despised, they say; even a child, like fire, burns when being touched.)
Those desirous of hearing and self-controlled, who have truly achieved steadfastness in the pursuit of knowledge—such should not be despised by thinking 'he is just a child,' for, they say, even a child, like fire, burns when touched. (03-133-7)
द्वारपाल उवाच॥

सरस्वतीमीरय वेदजुष्टा; मेकाक्षरां बहुरूपां विराजम्। अङ्गात्मानं समवेक्षस्व बालं; किं श्लाघसे दुर्लभा वादसिद्धिः ॥०३-१३३-८॥
sarasvatīm īraya vedajuṣṭā; ekākṣarāṃ bahurūpāṃ virājam। aṅgātmānaṃ samavekṣasva bālaṃ; kiṃ ślāghase durlabhā vādasiddhiḥ ॥03-133-8॥
[सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvati (Goddess of speech, acc. sg.); ईरय (īraya) - direct; वेदजुष्टा (vedajuṣṭā) - favoured by the Vedas; एकाक्षरां (ekākṣarām) - the one-lettered; बहुरूपां (bahurūpām) - having many forms; विराजम् (virājam) - illustrious; अङ्गात्मानं (aṅgātmānam) - the self in the body; समवेक्षस्व (samavekṣasva) - consider; बालं (bālam) - child; किं (kiṃ) - why; श्लाघसे (ślāghase) - do you boast; दुर्लभा (durlabhā) - difficult to attain; वादसिद्धिः (vādasiddhiḥ) - victory in debate;]
(Direct Sarasvati, favoured by the Vedas, the one-lettered, having many forms, illustrious. Consider the self embodied as a child. Why do you boast? Victory in debate is difficult to attain.)
Direct your speech, O Sarasvati, favoured by the Vedas, the one of many forms and illustrious as the one-lettered. Behold the embodied self as a child. Why do you boast? Victory in debate is rare. (03-133-8)

न ज्ञायते कायवृद्ध्या विवृद्धि; र्यथाष्ठीला शाल्मलेः सम्प्रवृद्धा। ह्रस्वोऽल्पकायः फलितो विवृद्धो; यश्चाफलस्तस्य न वृद्धभावः ॥०३-१३३-९॥
na jñāyate kāyavṛdhyā vivṛddhi; yathāṣṭhīlā śālmaleḥ sampravṛddhā। hrasvo'lpakāyaḥ phalito vivṛddho; yaścāphalastasya na vṛddhabhāvaḥ॥03-133-9॥
[न (na) - not; ज्ञायते (jñāyate) - is known; कायवृद्ध्या (kāyavṛdhyā) - by increase of body; विवृद्धिः (vivṛddhiḥ) - growth; यथा (yathā) - just as; अष्ट्ढीला (aṣṭhīlā) - large prickles; शाल्मलेः (śālmaleḥ) - of the silk-cotton tree; सम्प्रवृद्धा (sampravṛddhā) - having grown; ह्रस्वः (hrasvaḥ) - short; अल्पकायः (alpakāyaḥ) - with small body; फलितः (phalitaḥ) - bearing fruit; विवृद्धः (vivṛddhaḥ) - grown; यः (yaḥ) - he who; च (ca) - and; अफलः (aphalaḥ) - fruitless; तस्य (tasya) - of him; न (na) - not; वृद्धभावः (vṛddhabhāvaḥ) - state of growth;]
(Not is known by bodily increase, growth; just as large prickles of the silk-cotton tree having grown. Short, with small body, bearing fruit, (is) grown; and he who is fruitless, of him, not (the) state of growth.)
Growth is not known by increase of the body, just as the large prickles of the silk-cotton tree have grown. The short one, with a small body but bearing fruit, is considered grown; and for one who is fruitless, there is no real growth. (03-133-9)
द्वारपाल उवाच॥

The door-keeper said.
वृद्धेभ्य एवेह मतिं स्म बाला; गृह्णन्ति कालेन भवन्ति वृद्धाः। न हि ज्ञानमल्पकालेन शक्यं; कस्माद्बालो वृद्ध इवावभाषसे ॥०३-१३३-१०॥
vṛddhebhya eveha matiṁ sma bālā; gṛhṇanti kālena bhavanti vṛddhāḥ। na hi jñānam alpakālena śakyaṁ; kasmād bālo vṛddha ivāvabhāṣase ॥03-133-10॥
[वृद्धेभ्यः (vṛddhebhyaḥ) - from elders; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; मतिं (matiṁ) - intellect; स्म (sma) - indeed; बाला (bālā) - children; गृह्णन्ति (gṛhṇanti) - take; कालेन (kālena) - with time; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; वृद्धाः (vṛddhāḥ) - elders; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; अल्पकालेन (alpakālena) - in little time; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - elder; इव (iva) - like; आवभाषसे (āvabhāṣase) - you speak;]
(From elders indeed here intellect indeed children take; with time become elders. Not indeed knowledge in little time possible; why child elder like you speak?)
Indeed, children here take intellect only from elders; with time, they become elders. Knowledge is not possible to gain in a short time; why do you, being a child, speak as if you were an elder? (03-133-10)

न तेन स्थविरो भवति येनास्य पलितं शिरः। बालोऽपि यः प्रजानाति तं देवाः स्थविरं विदुः ॥०३-१३३-११॥
na tena sthaviro bhavati yenāsya palitaṃ śiraḥ। bālo'pi yaḥ prajānāti taṃ devāḥ sthaviraṃ viduḥ॥03-133-11॥
[न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by that; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - old; elder; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; येन (yena) - by which; अस्य (asya) - his; पलितं (palitaṃ) - grey hair; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; बालः (bālaḥ) - youth; child; अपि (api) - even; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रजानाति (prajānāti) - knows (clearly); understands; तम् (tam) - him; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; स्थविरम् (sthaviram) - old; wise; elder; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; consider;]
(Not by that one becomes old by which grey hair (is) (on) his head. Even a youth who knows (the truth), him the gods know as an elder.)
It is not greying hair that makes one old; the gods consider even a youthful person who truly understands as an elder. (03-133-11)
न हायनैर्न पलितैर्न वित्तेन न बन्धुभिः। ऋषयश्चक्रिरे धर्मं योऽनूचानः स नो महान् ॥०३-१३३-१२॥
na hāyanaiḥ na palitaiḥ na vittena na bandhubhiḥ। ṛṣayaḥ cakrire dharmam yaḥ anūcānaḥ saḥ naḥ mahān ॥03-133-12॥
[न (na) - not; हायनैः (hāyanaiḥ) - by years (by age); न (na) - not; पलितैः (palitaiḥ) - by gray hairs; न (na) - not; वित्तेन (vittena) - by wealth; न (na) - not; बन्धुभिः (bandhubhiḥ) - by relatives (kinsmen); ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the seers; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - have accomplished; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma (right conduct); यः (yaḥ) - who; अनूचानः (anūcānaḥ) - one who is learned; सः (saḥ) - he; नः (naḥ) - for us; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Not by years, not by gray hairs, not by wealth, not by relatives; the seers have accomplished dharma — he who is learned, he for us is great.)
It is not by years, nor by gray hair, nor wealth, nor relatives that sages achieve dharma; he who is learned — he alone is great for us. (03-133-12)
दिदृक्षुरस्मि सम्प्राप्तो बन्दिनं राजसंसदि। निवेदयस्व मां द्वाःस्थ राज्ञे पुष्करमालिने ॥०३-१३३-१३॥
didṛkṣur asmi samprāpto bandinaṃ rājasaṃsadi. nivedayasva māṃ dvāḥstha rājñe puṣkaramāline ॥03-133-13॥

(Desiring to see, I am arrived, the court bard, in the royal assembly. Inform me, doorkeeper, to the king Puṣkaramālin.)
I have come, wishing to see the court bard in the royal assembly; doorkeeper, inform the king Puṣkaramālin about me. (03-133-13)
द्रष्टास्यद्य वदतो द्वारपाल; मनीषिभिः सह वादे विवृद्धे। उताहो वाप्युच्चतां नीचतां वा; तूष्णीं भूतेष्वथ सर्वेषु चाद्य ॥०३-१३३-१४॥

(The observer of this (speech) today, O doorkeeper, with the wise, in the debate, increased; or indeed, whether (there is) highness or lowness or silence among beings or in all, and today.)
O doorkeeper, today the observer of this speech with the wise, as the debate has intensified, will be seen—whether there is greatness or meanness or even silence among beings or all, today. (03-133-14)

कथं यज्ञं दशवर्षो विशेस्त्वं; विनीतानां विदुषां सम्प्रवेश्यम्। उपायतः प्रयतिष्ये तवाहं; प्रवेशने कुरु यत्नं यथावत् ॥०३-१३३-१५॥
kathaṁ yajñaṁ daśavarṣo viśestvaṁ; vinītānāṁ viduṣāṁ sampraveśyam. upāyataḥ prayatiṣye tavāhaṁ; praveśane kuru yatnaṁ yathāvat ॥03-133-15॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; यज्ञं (yajñaṁ) - sacrifice; दशवर्षः (daśavarṣaḥ) - ten years old (boy); विशेः (viśeḥ) - will you allow to enter; त्वम् (tvam) - you; विनीतानाम् (vinītānām) - of humble; विदुषाम् (viduṣām) - of the learned; सम्प्रवेश्यम् (sampraveśyam) - eligible for entry; उपायतः (upāyataḥ) - through means; प्रयतिष्ये (prayatiṣye) - I will strive; तव (tava) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रवेशने (praveśane) - in entrance; कुरु (kuru) - do; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly;]
(How sacrifice ten-year-old will you allow, you; of humble of learned eligible for entry. By means I will strive your I; in entrance do effort properly. (03-133-15))
How will you allow a ten-year-old to enter the sacrifice? Among the humble and learned, who is eligible for entry? By whatever means, I will strive for your sake; properly make efforts so that I may enter. (03-133-15)

bho bho rājan janakānāṃ variṣṭha; sabhājyas tvaṃ tvayi sarvaṃ samṛddham। tvaṃ vā kartā karmaṇāṃ yajñiyānāṃ; yayātir eko nṛpatir vā purastāt॥03-133-16॥

(O O King, most eminent of the Janakas; worthy of honor are you, in you all is abundant. You are either the doer of sacrificial actions, or Yayati, the only king formerly.)
O King, most eminent among the Janakas! You are truly worthy of honor, and all abundance is found in you. Surely you are either the foremost performer of sacrificial deeds, or the unique sovereign, Yayati, from earlier times. (03-133-16)
विद्वान्बन्दी वेदविदो निगृह्य; वादे भग्नानप्रतिशङ्कमानः। त्वया निसृष्टैः पुरुषैराप्तकृद्भि; र्जले सर्वान्मज्जयतीति नः श्रुतम् ॥०३-१३३-१७॥
vidvān bandī vedavido nigṛhya; vāde bhagnān apratiśaṅkamānaḥ। tvayā nisṛṣṭaiḥ puruṣair āptakṛdbhir; jale sarvān majjayatīti naḥ śrutam ॥03-133-17॥
[विद्वान् (vidvān) - one who is learned; बन्दी (bandī) - (named) Bandī; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having seized; वादे (vāde) - in debate; भग्नान् (bhagnān) - those defeated; अप्रतिशङ्कमानः (apratiśaṅkamānaḥ) - without any suspicion; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; निसृष्टैः (nisṛṣṭaiḥ) - sent out; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; आप्तकृद्भिः (āptakṛdbhiḥ) - reliable (trustworthy) ones; जले (jale) - in water; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (of them); मज्जयतीति (majjayatīti) - he causes to be submerged, thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard;]
(The learned Bandī, having seized the knowers of the Veda, those defeated in debate, without any suspicion, by you sent out men, reliable ones, in water all (of them) he causes to be submerged, thus by us (it is) heard.)
We have heard that the learned Bandī, having seized and defeated in debate the knowers of the Veda, without any suspicion, has all of them submerged in water by reliable men sent out by you. (03-133-17)
स तच्छ्रुत्वा ब्राह्मणानां सकाशा; द्ब्रह्मोद्यं वै कथयितुमागतोऽस्मि। क्वासौ बन्दी यावदेनं समेत्य; नक्षत्राणीव सविता नाशयामि ॥०३-१३३-१८॥
sa tac chrutvā brāhmaṇānāṃ sakāśā; dbrahmodyaṃ vai kathayitum āgato'smi. kvāsau bandī yāvad enaṃ sametya; nakṣatrāṇīva savitā nāśayāmi ॥03-133-18॥

(He, having heard that, from the presence of the Brāhmaṇas, indeed I am come to relate the Brahman-discussion. Where is that prisoner? Until, having approached him, like the Sun (destroys) the stars, I will destroy (him).)
He, having heard this from the Brāhmaṇas, has indeed come to tell the Brahman-discussion. Where is that prisoner? As soon as I approach him, I will destroy him like the Sun destroys the stars. (03-133-18)

आशंससे बन्दिनं त्वं विजेतु; मविज्ञात्वा वाक्यबलं परस्य। विज्ञातवीर्यैः शक्यमेवं प्रवक्तुं; दृष्टश्चासौ ब्राह्मणैर्वादशीलैः ॥०३-१३३-१९॥
āśaṁsase bandinaṁ tvaṁ vijetu; mavi-jñātvā vākya-balaṁ parasya. vijñāta-vīryaiḥ śakyam evaṁ pravaktum; dṛṣṭaś ca asau brāhmaṇaīḥ vāda-śīlaiḥ ॥03-133-19॥
[आशंससे (āśaṁsase) - you desire; you long for; बन्दिनं (bandinaṁ) - the bard; the praiser; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; विजेतु (vijetu) - to defeat; to conquer; मविज्ञात्वा (mavi-jñātvā) - without knowing; वाक्यबलं (vākya-balaṁ) - the strength of words; power of sentence; परस्य (parasya) - of the other; the other's; विज्ञातवीर्यैः (vijñāta-vīryaiḥ) - by those whose power is known; शक्यम् (śakyam) - can be; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; in this way; प्रवक्तुं (pravaktum) - to speak; दृष्टश्च (dṛṣṭaś ca) - and seen; असौ (asau) - he; this one; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by the Brāhmaṇas; वादशीलैः (vāda-śīlaiḥ) - engaged in debate; fond of disputation;]
(You desire to defeat the bard without knowing the power of the other's words. By those whose strength is known, it is possible thus to speak; and he has been seen by Brāhmaṇas fond of disputation.)
You are wishing to defeat the bard without understanding the force of the other's arguments. Only those whose ability is proven can speak in this manner; and he has already been examined by Brāhmaṇas skilled in debate. (3-133-19)

vivādito'sau na hi mādṛśair hi; siṃhīkṛtas tena vadaty abhītaḥ. sametya māṃ nihataḥ śeṣyate'dya; mārge bhagnaṃ śakaṭam ivābalākṣam ॥03-133-20॥
[विवादितः (vivāditaḥ) - challenged; असौ (asau) - he; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मादृशैः (mādṛśaiḥ) - by people like me; हि (hi) - indeed; सिंहीकृतः (siṃhīkṛtaḥ) - made like a lion; तेन (tena) - by him; वदति (vadati) - speaks; अभीतः (abhītaḥ) - fearless; समेत्य (sametya) - having come together; माम् (mām) - me; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; शेष्यते (śeṣyate) - will remain; अद्य (adya) - today; मार्गे (mārge) - on the path; भग्नम् (bhagnam) - broken; शकटम् (śakaṭam) - cart; इव (iva) - like; अबलाक्षम् (abalākṣam) - with shattered axle;]
(Challenged, he, not indeed by people like me, indeed; made like a lion by him, he speaks fearlessly. Having come together, me slain will remain today; on the path, like a cart with a broken axle.)
He has been challenged, but not by people like me, indeed; made lion-like by him, he speaks fearlessly. Having come upon me, he will be slain and left today on the road, like a cart with a broken axle. (03-133-20)

ṣaṇṇābhér dvādaśākṣasya caturviṃśati-parvaṇaḥ। yaḥ triṣaṣṭi-śatārasya vedārthaṃ sa paraḥ kaviḥ॥03-133-21॥
[षण्णाभेः (ṣaṇṇābheḥ) - of six spokes; द्वादशाक्षस्य (dvādaśākṣasya) - of twelve spokes (or parts); चतुर्विंशतिपर्वणः (caturviṃśatiparvaṇaḥ) - having twenty-four joints; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्रिषष्टिशतारस्य (triṣaṣṭi-śatārasya) - of three-sixty-spoked; वेदार्थं (vedārtham) - meaning of the Veda; सः (saḥ) - he; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; कविः (kaviḥ) - sage;]
(Of six-spoked, having twelve spokes (parts), having twenty-four joints; who of three-sixty-spoked, the meaning of the Veda—he is the supreme sage.)
He who knows the structure—six-naved, twelve-spoked, twenty-four-jointed, and three-hundred-sixty-rimmed—understands the meaning of the Veda; he is the supreme sage. (03-133-21)

caturviṃśatiparva tvāṃ ṣaṇṇābhi dvādaśapradhi। tattriṣaṣṭiśatāraṃ vai cakraṃ pātu sadāgati ॥03-133-22॥
[चतुर्विंशति-पर्व (caturviṃśati-parva) - having twenty-four segments; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; षट्-नाभि (ṣaṭ-nābhi) - six (central) hubs; द्वादश-प्रधि (dvādaśa-pradhi) - twelve spokes; तत्-त्रिषष्टि-शत-आरं (tat-triṣaṣṭi-śata-āram) - with sixty-three (three and sixty) rims; वै (vai) - indeed; चक्रम् (cakram) - wheel; पातु (pātu) - may (it) protect; सदा-अगति (sadā-agati) - always in motion; ॥०३-१३३-२२॥ (॥03-133-22॥) -;]
(The twenty-four-segmented, six-hubbed, twelve-spoked, sixty-three-rimmed wheel, indeed, may it always-in-motion protect you.)
May the wheel with twenty-four segments, six hubs, twelve spokes, and sixty-three rims, always in motion, indeed protect you. (03-133-22)

[वडवे (vaḍave) - like a female horse; इव (iva) - as; like; संयुक्ते (saṃyukte) - united; joined; श्येनपाते (śyenapāte) - when the hawk descends; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the inhabitants of heaven; कः (kaḥ) - who; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of the two; गर्भम् (garbham) - embryo; fetus; आधत्ते (ādhatte) - places; deposits; गर्भम् (garbham) - embryo; fetus; सुषुवतुः (suṣuvatuḥ) - (which) the two gave birth to; च (ca) - and; कम् (kam) - whom;]
(Like a female horse, when united, at the hawk's descent of the inhabitants of heaven, who of the two places the embryo, and whom did the two give birth to? (03-133-23))

[मा (mā) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; ते (te) - your; ते (te) - your; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शात्रवाणाम् (śātravāṇām) - of enemies; अपि (api) - even; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; वातसारथिः (vāta-sārathiḥ) - the wind (vāta) as the charioteer; आधत्ते (ādadhte) - places; गर्भम् (garbham) - (their) embryo; सुषुवतुः (suṣuvatuḥ) - (they) give birth; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Do not indeed, in your house, O king, even certainly (the) enemies', the wind as charioteer places the embryo and they give birth to him.)
O king, surely, even in your house, do not suspect that enemies' children are born; the wind-charioteer places the embryo and they give birth to him. (03-133-24)

kiṁ svit suptaṁ na nimiṣati kiṁ svij jātaṁ na ca upati। kasya svit hṛdayaṁ na āsti kiṁ svit vegena vardhate ॥03-133-25॥

(What perhaps, asleep, does not close (the eyes)? What perhaps, born, does not also die? Whose perhaps, heart does not exist? What perhaps, with speed, grows?)
What is it that, though asleep, does not close its eyes? What is it that, though born, does not die? Whose heart does not exist? What is it that grows with speed? (03-133-25)

matsyaḥ supto na nimiṣaty aṇḍaṃ jātaṃ na copati। aśmano hṛdayaṃ nāsti nadī vegena vardhate॥03-133-26॥
[मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; न (na) - not; निमिषति (nimiṣati) - closes (the eyes); अण्डं (aṇḍam) - egg; जातं (jātam) - born; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उपति (upati) - approaches; अश्मनः (aśmanaḥ) - of stone; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; नदी (nadī) - river; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; वर्धते (vardhate) - grows;]
(The fish asleep does not close (its eyes), the egg when born does not approach, the heart of stone there is not, the river grows with speed.)
A fish does not close its eyes when asleep; an egg, once produced, does not approach (again); a stone has no heart; a river increases with speed. (03-133-26)

न त्वा मन्ये मानुषं देवसत्त्वं; न त्वं बालः स्थविरस्त्वं मतो मे। न ते तुल्यो विद्यते वाक्प्रलापे; तस्माद्द्वारं वितराम्येष बन्दी ॥०३-१३३-२७॥
na tvā manye mānuṣaṃ devasattvaṃ; na tvaṃ bālaḥ sthaviras tvaṃ mato me. na te tulyo vidyate vākapralāpe; tasmād dvāraṃ vitarāmyeṣa bandī ॥03-133-27॥

(Not you I think to be a human being, (but) a divine being; not you a child, (nor) you an old man am I thought by me. Not your equal exists in speech; therefore, the door I open, this guard.)
I do not consider you a human, but a divine being; I do not think of you as a child or as an old man. There is no one equal to you in speech; therefore, I, this guard, open the door. (03-133-27)
