vyāghraṃ śayānaṃ prati mā prabodhaya; āśīviṣaṃ sṛkkiṇī lelihānam. padāhatasyeva śiro'bhihatya; nādaṣṭo vai mokṣyase tannibodha ॥03-134-3॥

(Tiger lying towards do not awaken; venomous snake with fangs licking. Just as of one struck by the foot, having struck the head; not bitten indeed, will be released, that understand.)
Do not awaken a sleeping tiger; do not disturb a venomous snake licking with its fangs exposed. Just as, if you strike the head of one with your foot, know that unless bitten, you will not escape. (03-134-3)
यो वै दर्पात्संहननोपपन्नः; सुदुर्बलः पर्वतमाविहन्ति। तस्यैव पाणिः सनखो विशीर्यते; न चैव शैलस्य हि दृश्यते व्रणः ॥०३-१३४-४॥
yo vai darpāt saṃhananopapannaḥ; sudurbalaḥ parvatam āvihanti. tasyaiva pāṇiḥ sanakho viśīryate; na caiva śailasya hi dṛśyate vraṇaḥ ॥03-134-4॥

(Who indeed from arrogance and endowed with (mere) strength, though very weak, strikes a mountain; his own hand with nails is shattered, and indeed no wound at all is seen on the rock.)
He who, out of arrogance and with only seeming strength but in reality very weak, strikes a mountain—his hand with nails is shattered, yet no wound is seen at all on the mountain. (03-134-4)
सर्वे राज्ञो मैथिलस्य मैनाकस्येव पर्वताः। निकृष्टभूता राजानो वत्सा अनदुहो यथा ॥०३-१३४-५॥

(All the mountains are as (if they were) of Maināka for the king of Mithila. The other kings have become inferior just as calves (are) to a cow not to be milked.)
All kings are insignificant before the king of Mithila, just as all other mountains are to Maināka, and as calves are to a cow that is not to be milked. (03-134-5)

एक एवाग्निर्बहुधा समिध्यते; एकः सूर्यः सर्वमिदं प्रभासते। एको वीरो देवराजो निहन्ता; यमः पितॄणामीश्वरश्चैक एव ॥०३-१३४-७॥
eka evāgnir bahudhā samidhyate; ekaḥ sūryaḥ sarvam idaṃ prabhāsate. eko vīro devarājo nihantā; yamaḥ pitṝṇām īśvaraś caika eva ॥03-134-7॥

(One alone indeed fire in many ways is kindled; one sun all this shines. One alone hero lord of the gods slayer; Yama of the ancestors lord and only one indeed.)
The same fire alone is kindled in many forms; the one sun illumines all of this. The one hero, lord of the gods and slayer, Yama is the lord of the ancestors, and there is but one ruler. (03-134-7)

triḥ sūyate karmaṇā vai prajeyaṃ; trayo yuktā vājapeyaṃ vahanti. adhvaryavas triṣavaṇāni tanvate; trayo lokās trīṇi jyotīṃṣi cāhuḥ ॥03-134-9॥

There are seven domestic animals and seven wild ones; seven meters bring forth one sacrifice. The seven sages and also the seven offerings; and the famous vīṇā has seven strings itself. (03-134-13)

(Eight śāṇas carry a weight of a hundred; likewise, the eight-footed śarabha is a lion-killer. Eight Vasus we have heard among the deities; and the sacrificial post, eight-edged, is prescribed for all sacrifices.)
Eight śāṇas (fibers) are required to carry the weight of a hundred; similarly, the eight-footed śarabha is said to kill lions. We have heard of eight Vasus among the deities, and an eight-edged sacrificial post is enjoined in all sacrifices. (03-134-14)

Having spoken thus far, the bard became silent; Aṣṭavakra recited half of the verse. Keśī wandered for thirteen days; metres beginning with thirteen syllables are called aticchandas. (03-134-20)
ततो महानुदतिष्ठन्निनाद; स्तूष्णीम्भूतं सूतपुत्रं निशम्य। अधोमुखं ध्यानपरं तदानी; मष्टावक्रं चाप्युदीर्यन्तमेव ॥०३-१३४-२१॥

(Then the great (person) stood up sound, having heard the son of the charioteer become silent, with face down, engaged in meditation at that time Maṣṭāvakra, and also just uttering aloud.)
Then that great one rose up with a sound, after hearing the son of the charioteer become silent, while Maṣṭāvakra at that time, with his face turned down and absorbed in meditation, was just beginning to speak aloud. (3-134-21)

(In that thus crowded existing, in the abundant sacrifice of Janaka the king, Aṣṭāvakra, honoring, approached; the Brāhmaṇas, all, with folded hands, with confidence.)
While the sacrifice of King Janaka was thus crowded and flourishing, all the Brāhmaṇas confidently and with folded hands approached Aṣṭāvakra to honor him. (03-134-22)

(By this one indeed, the Brāhmaṇas having listened, having conquered in disputation, in water were immersed, it is said. Those indeed, of right conduct, today Bandin should bring, having taken, in the waters drown him.)
It is said that by this person, the Brāhmaṇas who listened and won disputes were immersed in water. Let Bandin, who is of right conduct, today bring them; having seized him, drown him in the water. (03-134-23)

(I son of Varuṇa also of the king; there was a sacrifice twelve-year indeed. By the sacrifice your O Janaka equal duration; for that purpose your sent by me foremost Brāhmaṇas.)
I am the son of Varuṇa and also of the king; there was indeed a twelve-year sacrifice there. By a sacrifice of equal duration to yours, O Janaka, for that purpose the foremost Brāhmaṇas have been sent by me. (3-134-24)

(These all, and Varuṇa, and the sacrifice; to see (them), gone here, come again. Aṣṭāvakra I worship, worthy of worship, whose reason the creator I shall meet. (03-134-25))
All these, along with Varuṇa, have come here again to see the sacrifice. I worship Aṣṭāvakra, who is worthy of worship, for whose sake I shall meet the creator. (03-134-25)

(Wise ones in the ocean water submerged; they by speech overcome by intellect ignorant. That by intellect speech then he raised up; as speech discern wise ones ॥03-134-26॥)
The wise ones were submerged in the ocean waters; they, being ignorant, were overcome by speech and not by intellect. Then, by intellect, he raised up that speech, just as the wise discern speech. (03-134-26)
अग्निर्दहञ्जातवेदाः सतां गृहा; न्विसर्जयंस्तेजसा न स्म धाक्षीत्। बालेषु पुत्रेषु कृपणं वदत्सु; तथा वाचमवचिन्वन्ति सन्तः ॥०३-१३४-२७॥

[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; दहन् (dahan) - burning; जातवेदाः (jātavedāḥ) - the knower of what is born (epithet of fire); सतां (satām) - of the good; गृहाः (gṛhāḥ) - houses; नु (nu) - indeed; विसर्जयन् (visarjayan) - sending forth; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - surely; धाक्षीत् (dhākṣīt) - should burn; बालेषु (bāleṣu) - among children; पुत्रेषु (putreṣu) - among sons; कृपणं (kṛpaṇam) - pitifully; वदत्सु (vadatsu) - speaking; तथा (tathā) - thus; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; अवचिन्वन्ति (avacinvanti) - choose; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the good;]
(Fire, burning, the knower of what is born, of the good, houses; indeed, sending forth, with brilliance, not, surely, should burn. Among children, among sons, pitifully, speaking; thus, speech, choose, the good.)
Fire, though burning brilliantly, does not burn the houses of the virtuous. Among children or sons speaking pitifully, good people thus choose their words. (03-134-27)
श्लेष्मातकी क्षीणवर्चाः शृणोषि; उताहो त्वां स्तुतयो मादयन्ति। हस्तीव त्वं जनक वितुद्यमानो; न मामिकां वाचमिमां शृणोषि ॥०३-१३४-२८॥
śleṣmātakī kṣīṇavarcāḥ śṛṇoṣi; utāho tvāṃ stutayo mādayanti. hastīva tvaṃ janaka vitudyamānaḥ; na māmikāṃ vācam imāṃ śṛṇoṣi ॥03-134-28॥

You, with phlegm in your ears whose brightness is diminished, do not hear; or perhaps the praises delight you? Like an elephant, O father, even when reproached, you do not listen to this speech of mine. (03-134-28)

शृणोमि वाचं तव दिव्यरूपा; ममानुषीं दिव्यरूपोऽसि साक्षात्। अजैषीर्यद्बन्दिनं त्वं विवादे; निसृष्ट एष तव कामोऽद्य बन्दी ॥०३-१३४-२९॥
śṛṇomi vācaṃ tava divyarūpā; mamānuṣīṃ divyarūpo'si sākṣāt। ajaiṣīryadbandinam tvaṃ vivāde; nisṛṣṭa eṣa tava kāmo'dya bandī ॥03-134-29॥

(I hear your speech, divine in form; I am human, you are verily of divine form. You conquered the panegyrist in debate; this panegyrist, your wish, has been dismissed today. (03-134-29))
I hear your speech, which is of a divine nature; although I am human, you truly possess a divine form. You have won over the panegyrist in debate; thus, today, this panegyrist—your wish—has been dismissed. (03-134-29)
अष्टावक्र उवाच॥

नानेन जीवता कश्चिदर्थो मे बन्दिना नृप। पिता यद्यस्य वरुणो मज्जयैनं जलाशये ॥०३-१३४-३०॥
nānena jīvatā kaścid artho me bandinā nṛpa। pitā yady asya varuṇo majjaya enaṃ jalāśaye ॥03-134-30॥
[न (na) - not; एनेन (anena) - by this; जीवता (jīvatā) - by the living (here, his life); कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; मे (me) - for me; बन्दिना (bandinā) - by the prisoner; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; पिता (pitā) - father; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्य (asya) - of him; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa (god of waters); मज्जय (majjaya) - cause to sink; एनम् (enam) - him; जलाशये (jalāśaye) - in the reservoir of water;]
(Not by this, by the living, any purpose for me by the prisoner, O king. Father if of him is Varuṇa, cause him to sink in the reservoir of water.)
O king, I have no purpose with this prisoner's life. If his father is Varuṇa, then have him drowned in the reservoir of water. (03-134-30)
बन्द्युवाच॥

अहं पुत्रो वरुणस्योत राज्ञो; न मे भयं सलिले मज्जितस्य। इमं मुहूर्तं पितरं द्रक्ष्यतेऽय; मष्टावक्रश्चिरनष्टं कहोडम् ॥०३-१३४-३१॥
ahaṃ putro varuṇasyota rājño; na me bhayaṃ salile majjitasya. imaṃ muhūrtaṃ pitaraṃ drakṣyate'ya; maṣṭāvakraściranaṣṭaṃ kahoḍam ॥03-134-31॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; उत (uta) - also; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; सलिले (salile) - in water; मज्जितस्य (majjitasya) - while submerged; इमम् (imam) - this; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - moment; पितरम् (pitram) - father; द्रक्ष्यते (drakṣyate) - will be seen; अयम् (ayam) - he; अष्टावक्रः (aṣṭāvakraḥ) - Aṣṭāvakra; चिरनष्टम् (ciranaṣṭam) - long lost; कहोडम् (kahoḍam) - Kahoḍa;]
(I son of Varuṇa also of the king; not to me fear in water while submerged. This moment father will be seen; Aṣṭāvakra long lost Kahoḍa.)
I am the son of Varuṇa, also of the king; I have no fear while submerged in water. In this very moment, his father will be seen—Aṣṭāvakra will see the long lost Kahoḍa. (03-134-31)
लोमश उवाच॥

ततस्ते पूजिता विप्रा वरुणेन महात्मना। उदतिष्ठन्त ते सर्वे जनकस्य समीपतः ॥०३-१३४-३२॥
tatas te pūjitā viprā varuṇena mahātmanā। udatiṣṭhanta te sarve janakasya samīpataḥ॥03-134-32॥
[ततः (tatas) - then; ते (te) - they; पूजिताः (pūjitāḥ) - having been honored; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brahmaṇas; वरुणेन (varuṇena) - by Varuṇa; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; उदतिष्टन्त (udatiṣṭhanta) - arose; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; जनकस्य (janakasya) - of Janaka; समीपतः (samīpataḥ) - from the proximity;]
(Then they, having been honored, the brahmaṇas, by Varuṇa the great-souled, arose, they all, from the proximity of Janaka.)
Then the brahmaṇas, having been honored by the great-souled Varuṇa, all arose from the presence of Janaka. (03-134-32)
कहोड उवाच॥
kahoḍa uvāca॥
[कहोड (kahoḍa) - Kahoḍa (proper name); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

इत्यर्थमिच्छन्ति सुताञ्जना जनक कर्मणा। यदहं नाशकं कर्तुं तत्पुत्रः कृतवान्मम ॥०३-१३४-३३॥
ityartham icchanti sutān janā janaka karmaṇā। yad ahaṃ nāśakam kartuṃ tat putraḥ kṛtvān mama ॥03-134-33॥
[इत्यर्थम् (ityartham) - for this purpose; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - they desire; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; जनक (janaka) - father; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; यत् (yat) - which; अहम् (aham) - I; नाशकं (nāśakam) - not capable; कर्तुम् (kartuṃ) - to do; तत् (tat) - that; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; कृतवान् (kṛtvān) - has done; मम (mama) - for me;]
(For this purpose, people desire sons, the father by action; which I not able to do, that my son has done for me.)
It is for this reason that people desire sons: what I could not accomplish, my son has done for me. (03-134-33)
उताबलस्य बलवानुत बालस्य पण्डितः। उत वाविदुषो विद्वान्पुत्रो जनक जायते ॥०३-१३४-३४॥
utābalasya balavānuta bālasya paṇḍitaḥ। uta vāviduṣo vidvānputro janaka jāyate॥03-134-34॥
[उत (uta) - or; also; आबलस्य (ābalasya) - of the weak; (ā + balasya); बलवान् (balavān) - strong; powerful; उत (uta) - or; also; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the child; of the young; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) - wise; learned one; उत (uta) - or; also; वा (vā) - or; अविदुषः (aviduṣaḥ) - of the ignorant; unlearned; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned; wise; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; जनक (janaka) - father; जायते (jāyate) - is born; comes into being;]
(Or to the weak, a strong (person), or to a child, a wise (person); or indeed from the ignorant, a learned son is born to the father.)
Sometimes to the weak a strong person is born, to a child a wise person, or from an unlearned father a learned son is born. (03-134-34)
बन्द्युवाच॥

शितेन ते परशुना स्वयमेवान्तको नृप। शिरांस्यपाहरत्वाजौ रिपूणां भद्रमस्तु ते ॥०३-१३४-३५॥
śitena te paraśunā svayamevāntako nṛpa. śirāṃsyapāharatvājau ripūṇāṃ bhadramastu te ॥03-134-35॥
[शितेन (śitena) - by the sharp; ते (te) - your; परशुना (paraśunā) - axe; स्वयमेव (svayam eva) - himself indeed; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - Yama (the god of death); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; शिरांसि (śirāṃsi) - heads; अपाहरत् (apāharat) - has removed; वाजौ (ājau) - in battle; रिपूणाम् (ripūṇām) - of enemies; भद्रम् (bhadram) - prosperity; अस्तु (astu) - may it be; ते (te) - to you;]
(By the sharp axe of yours, O king, Yama himself indeed has removed the heads of enemies in battle; may prosperity be to you.)
O king, with your sharp axe, Yama himself has struck down the heads of your enemies in battle; may you be blessed. (03-134-35)
महदुक्थ्यं गीयते साम चाग्र्यं; सम्यक्सोमः पीयते चात्र सत्रे। शुचीन्भागान्प्रतिजगृहुश्च हृष्टाः; साक्षाद्देवा जनकस्येह यज्ञे ॥०३-१३४-३६॥
mahad-ukthyaṃ gīyate sāma ca āgryaṃ; samyak-somaḥ pīyate ca atra satre. śucīn bhāgān pratijagṛhuḥ ca hṛṣṭāḥ; sākṣāt devā janakasya iha yajñe ॥03-134-36॥
[महदुक्थ्यं (mahad-ukthyaṃ) - great hymn; गीयते (gīyate) - is sung; साम (sāma) - melodious chant; च (ca) - and; आग्र्यं (āgryaṃ) - excellent; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; सोमः (somaḥ) - soma (sacred drink); पीयते (pīyate) - is drunk; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; सत्रे (satre) - in the session (sacrificial session); शुचीन् (śucīn) - pure; भागान् (bhāgān) - portions (shares); प्रतिजगृहुः (pratijagṛhuḥ) - accepted; च (ca) - and; हृष्टाः (hṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; जनकस्य (janakasya) - of Janaka; इह (iha) - here; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice;]
(A great hymn is sung and the excellent sāma (chant); properly soma is drunk here in this sacrificial session. The pure portions were accepted with joy; directly the gods in Janaka’s sacrifice here.)
A splendid hymn is sung, the finest sāma-chant resounds, soma is perfectly drunk in this assembly; the pure shares were received in joy—here at Janaka’s sacrifice, the gods themselves were present. (03-134-36)
लोमश उवाच॥

समुत्थितेष्वथ सर्वेषु राज; न्विप्रेषु तेष्वधिकं सुप्रभेषु। अनुज्ञातो जनकेनाथ राज्ञा; विवेश तोयं सागरस्योत बन्दी ॥०३-१३४-३७॥
samutthiteṣvatha sarveṣu rāja; nvipreṣu teṣvadhikaṃ suprabheṣu. anujñāto janakenātha rājñā; viveśa toyaṃ sāgarasyota bandhī ॥03-134-37॥
[समुत्थितेषु (samutthiteṣu) - having arisen; (in those who have arisen;) अथ (atha) - then; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विप्रेषु (vipreṣu) - among the Brāhmaṇas; तेषु (teṣu) - among those; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - greater; सुप्रभेषु (suprabheṣu) - in those well-illuminated (excellent) ones; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; जनकेन (janakena) - by Janaka; अथ (atha) - then; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; तोयम् (toyam) - the water; सागरस्य (sāgarasya) - of the ocean; उत (uta) - also; बन्दी (bandhī) - the bard;]
(When all had arisen then, O king, among the Brāhmaṇas, among those who shone more greatly; having been permitted by Janaka the king, then the bard also entered the water of the ocean.)
Then, O king, when all the Brāhmaṇas had risen—those most illustrious ones—having been permitted by King Janaka, the bard also entered the water of the ocean. (03-134-37)
अष्टावक्रः पितरं पूजयित्वा; सम्पूजितो ब्राह्मणैस्तैर्यथावत्। प्रत्याजगामाश्रममेव चाग्र्यं; जित्वा बन्दिं सहितो मातुलेन ॥०३-१३४-३८॥
aṣṭāvakraḥ pitaraṃ pūjayitvā; sampūjito brāhmaṇais tair yathāvat. pratyājagām āśramam eva ca āgryaṃ; jitvā bandiṃ sahito mātulena ॥03-134-38॥

(Aṣṭāvakra, having worshipped (his) father; having been honored properly by those Brāhmaṇas, indeed returned to the excellent hermitage; having conquered Bandi, (he) together with (his) uncle (returned).)
Aṣṭāvakra, after worshipping his father, and having been duly honored by those Brāhmaṇas, returned together with his uncle to the chief hermitage, having defeated Bandi. (03-134-38)
अत्र कौन्तेय सहितो भ्रातृभिस्त्वं; सुखोषितः सह विप्रैः प्रतीतः। पुण्यान्यन्यानि शुचिकर्मैकभक्ति; र्मया सार्धं चरितास्याजमीढ ॥०३-१३४-३९॥
atra kaunteya sahito bhrātṛbhistvaṁ; sukhoṣitaḥ saha vipraiḥ pratītaḥ. puṇyānyanyāni śucikarmaikabhaktir mayā sārdhaṁ caritāsyājamīḍha ॥03-134-39॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together with; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; सुखोषितः (sukhoṣitaḥ) - comfortably dwelt; सह (saha) - with; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - with the brahmins; प्रतीतः (pratītaḥ) - honored; पुण्यानि (puṇyāni) - auspicious deeds; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; शुचिकर्म (śucikarma) - pure acts; एकभक्ति (ekabhakti) - single-minded devotion; र्मया (mayā) - by me; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; चरितानि (caritāni) - performed; अस्य (asya) - by you; अजमीढ (ajamīḍha) - O descendant of Ajamīḍha;]
(Here, O son of Kunti, you together with the brothers comfortably dwelt, honored with the brahmins. Other auspicious pure acts with single-minded devotion have been performed by you together with me, O Ajamīḍha.)
Here, O son of Kunti, you have resided comfortably together with your brothers and have been honored by the brahmins. You have performed other auspicious and pure deeds with single-minded devotion together with me, O descendant of Ajamīḍha. (03-134-39)
