te śūrās tatadhanvānas tūṇavantaḥ samārgaṇāḥ। baddhagodhāṅgulitrāṇāḥ khadgavanto'mitaujasaḥ॥03-143-1॥

(Lakes, rivers, and indeed mountains and forests and trees of abundant shade they saw on the summit of the mountain; regions ever-flowering and fruiting attended by groups of divine sages.)

(Having placed oneself in oneself, the heroes, eating roots and fruits, wandered difficult and dangerous lands of various forms (high and low), seeing many and various species of animals.)

ऋषिसिद्धामरयुतं गन्धर्वाप्सरसां प्रियम्। विविशुस्ते महात्मानः किंनराचरितं गिरिम् ॥०३-१४३-५॥
ṛṣi-siddha-amara-yutam gandharva-apsarasāṃ priyam। viviśus te mahātmānaḥ kiṁnara-acaritaṃ girim ॥03-143-5॥

(The mountain frequented by kinnaras, beloved of gandharvas and apsarases, joined with sages, siddhas and gods, those great souls entered.)

प्रविशत्स्वथ वीरेषु पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्। चण्डवातं महद्वर्षं प्रादुरासीद्विशां पते ॥०३-१४३-६॥

tato reṇuḥ samudbhūtaḥ sapatrabahulo mahān। pṛthivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca dyāṁ caiva tamasāvṛṇot ॥03-143-7॥

न स्म प्रज्ञायते किञ्चिदावृते व्योम्नि रेणुना। न चापि शेकुस्ते कर्तुमन्योन्यस्याभिभाषणम् ॥०३-१४३-८॥
na sma prajñāyate kiñcid āvṛte vyomni reṇunā। na ca api śekus te kartum anyonyasya abhibhāṣaṇam ॥03-143-8॥

(Not indeed anything is perceived, the sky being covered by dust. And they also were not able to do each other's speaking.)
Nothing at all was visible as the sky was covered with dust, and they were not even able to speak to one another. (03-143-8)
न चापश्यन्त तेऽन्योन्यं तमसा हतचक्षुषः। आकृष्यमाणा वातेन साश्मचूर्णेन भारत ॥०३-१४३-९॥
na cāpaśyanta te'nyoṇyaṃ tamasā hatacakṣuṣaḥ. ākṛṣyamāṇā vātena sāśmacūrṇena bhārata ॥03-143-9॥

(And they did not see each other, their sight destroyed by darkness, being dragged by wind together with stone-dust, O Bhārata.)

द्रुमाणां वातभग्नानां पततां भूतले भृशम्। अन्येषां च महीजानां शब्दः समभवन्महान् ॥०३-१४३-१०॥
drumāṇāṃ vātabhagnānāṃ patatāṃ bhūtalē bhṛśam| anyēṣāṃ ca mahījānāṃ śabdaḥ samabhavan mahān ॥03-143-10॥

द्यौः स्वित्पतति किं भूमौ दीर्यन्ते पर्वता नु किम्। इति ते मेनिरे सर्वे पवनेन विमोहिताः ॥०३-१४३-११॥

[द्यौः (dyauḥ) - the sky; स्वित् (svit) - indeed; पतति (patati) - is falling; किं (kiṃ) - whether; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the earth; दीर्यन्ते (dīryante) - are splitting; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; नु (nu) - perhaps; किम् (kim) - whether; इति (iti) - thus; ते (te) - they; मेनिरे (menire) - thought; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पवनेन (pavanena) - by the wind; विमोहिताः (vimohitāḥ) - deluded;]
(The sky indeed is falling? Whether on the earth mountains are splitting? Thus they all thought, deluded by the wind.)
"Is the sky indeed falling? Are the mountains splitting upon the earth?"—Thus all of them thought, deluded by the wind. (03-143-11)
ते यथानन्तरान्वृक्षान्वल्मीकान्विषमाणि च। पाणिभिः परिमार्गन्तो भीता वायोर्निलिल्यिरे ॥०३-१४३-१२॥
te yathā'nantarān vṛkṣān valmīkān viṣamāṇi ca | pāṇibhiḥ parimārganto bhītā vāyor nililyire ॥03-143-12॥

(They as nearest trees, anthills, irregular places and with hands searching all around, afraid, from the wind, hid themselves.)

ततः कार्मुकमुद्यम्य भीमसेनो महाबलः। कृष्णामादाय सङ्गत्या तस्थावाश्रित्य पादपम् ॥०३-१४३-१३॥

(Then, having raised the bow, Bhīmasena the mighty, having taken Kṛṣṇā, having joined (with her), stood having resorted to a tree.)

धर्मराजश्च धौम्यश्च निलिल्याते महावने। अग्निहोत्राण्युपादाय सहदेवस्तु पर्वते ॥०३-१४३-१४॥
dharmarājaś ca dhaumyaś ca nililyāte mahāvane। agnihotrāṇy upādāya sahadevas tu parvate ॥03-143-14॥

(Nakul, the Brāhmaṇas and others, and Lomaśa, the great-austerity, having approached the trees, frightened, here and there, they hid themselves.)

mandībhūte ca pavane tasmin rajasi śāmyati। mahadbhiḥ pṛṣatais tūrṇaṃ varṣam abhyājagāma ha॥03-143-16॥

(And with the wind having become slow, in that dust it subsides. By great drops quickly the rain indeed approached.)
As the wind slowed, the dust (in the air) settled, and the rain with large drops quickly arrived. (03-143-16)
ततोऽश्मसहिता धाराः संवृण्वन्त्यः समन्ततः। प्रपेतुरनिशं तत्र शीघ्रवातसमीरिताः ॥०३-१४३-१७॥
tato'śmasahitā dhārāḥ saṁvṛṇvantyaḥ samantataḥ। prapetur aniśaṁ tatra śīghravātasamīritāḥ॥03-143-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अश्मसहिता (aśma-sahitāḥ) - accompanied by stones; धाराः (dhārāḥ) - streams; संवृण्वन्त्यः (saṁvṛṇvantyaḥ) - covering; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around; प्रपेतुः (prapetuḥ) - fell down; अनिशं (aniśam) - constantly; तत्र (tatra) - there; शीघ्रवातसमीरिताः (śīghra-vāta-samīritāḥ) - driven by a swift wind;]
(Then streams accompanied by stones, covering all around, fell down constantly there, driven by a swift wind.)

ततः सागरगा आपः कीर्यमाणाः समन्ततः। प्रादुरासन्सकलुसाः फेनवत्यो विशां पते ॥०३-१४३-१८॥
tataḥ sāgaragā āpaḥ kīryamāṇāḥ samantataḥ। prādurāsan sakalusāḥ phenavatyo viśāṃ pate ॥03-143-18॥

(Then the waters going to the ocean, being scattered all around, appeared frothy, with foam, O lord of men.)
Then, O lord of men, the waters flowing toward the ocean, scattered in all directions, appeared frothy and filled with foam. (03-143-18)
वहन्त्यो वारि बहुलं फेनोडुपपरिप्लुतम्। परिसस्रुर्महाशब्दाः प्रकर्षन्त्यो महीरुहान् ॥०३-१४३-१९॥
vahantyo vāri bahulaṃ phenodupariplutam। parisasrurmahāśabdāḥ prakarṣantyo mahīruhān ॥03-143-19॥

(Carrying abundant water covered with foam and bubbles, rushing swiftly with great sound, dragging trees.)

तस्मिन्नुपरते वर्षे वाते च समतां गते। गते ह्यम्भसि निम्नानि प्रादुर्भूते दिवाकरे ॥०३-१४३-२०॥
tasminn-uparate varṣe vāte ca samatāṁ gate। gate hy-ambhasi nimnāni prādurbhūte divākare ॥03-143-20॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (time, event); उपरते (uparate) - having ceased; stopped; वर्षे (varṣe) - rain; वाते (vāte) - (and) wind; च (ca) - and; समताम् (samatām) - calmness; equality; गते (gate) - having attained; having gone; गते (gate) - having departed; gone; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अम्भसि (ambhasi) - in the water; निम्नानि (nimnāni) - the low (places); depressions; प्रादुर्भूते (prādurbhūte) - having appeared; arisen; दिवाकरे (divākare) - (the) sun; (literally: 'maker of day');]
(In that (time), having ceased the rain and the wind, and calmness having been attained, when indeed the water had gone, the low places appeared when the sun had arisen.)
At that time, when the rain and wind had stopped and calmness set in, as the water receded, the sun arose and the low-lying areas became visible. (03-143-20)
निर्जग्मुस्ते शनैः सर्वे समाजग्मुश्च भारत। प्रतस्थुश्च पुनर्वीराः पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥०३-१४३-२१॥
