भीमसेन यमौ चोभौ पाञ्चालि च निबोधत। नास्ति भूतस्य नाशो वै पश्यतास्मान्वनेचरान् ॥०३-१४२-१॥
bhīmasena yamau cobhau pāñcāli ca nibodhata। nāsti bhūtasya nāśo vai paśyatāsmān vane-carān ॥03-142-1॥
[भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhimasena; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; पाञ्चालि (pāñcāli) - O daughter of Panchala; च (ca) - and; निबोधत (nibodhata) - know; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; भूतस्य (bhūtasya) - of a being; नाशः (nāśaḥ) - destruction; वै (vai) - indeed; पश्यत (paśyata) - behold; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; वनेचरान् (vane-carān) - dwelling in the forest;]
(Bhimasena, the two sons of Yama, and both, O daughter of Panchala, and know; there is not of a being destruction indeed; behold us dwelling in the forest.)
Know that Bhimasena, the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), and both, O Panchali, and that there is truly no destruction of a being; look upon us who dwell in the forest. (03-142-1)
दुर्बलाः क्लेशिताः स्मेति यद्ब्रवीथेतरेतरम्। अशक्येऽपि व्रजामेति धनञ्जयदिदृक्षया ॥०३-१४२-२॥
durbalāḥ kleśitāḥ smeti yad bravīthetaretaram। aśakye'pi vrajāmeti dhanañjayadidṛkṣayā ॥03-142-2॥
[दुर्बलाः (durbalāḥ) - weak ones; क्लेशिताः (kleśitāḥ) - afflicted ones; स्म् (sm) - we are; इति (iti) - thus; यत् (yat) - that; ब्रवीथि (bravīthi) - you say; इतरेतरम् (itaretaram) - each other; अशक्ये (aśakye) - in (the) impossible; अपि (api) - even; व्रजाम (vrajāma) - let us go; इति (iti) - thus; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); इदृक्षया (idṛkṣayā) - out of desire to see;]
(Weak, afflicted, we are thus—that you say to each other. Even in the impossible, let us go—thus (spoken) out of desire to see Dhanañjaya.)
You say to each other, "We are weak, we are afflicted," yet, even when it is impossible, you say, "Let us go," out of desire to see Dhanañjaya. (03-142-2)
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि तूलराशिमिवानलः। यच्च वीरं न पश्यामि धनञ्जयमुपान्तिके ॥०३-१४२-३॥
tan me dahati gātrāṇi tūlarāśim ivā'nalaḥ। yac ca vīraṃ na paśyāmi dhanañjayam upāntike ॥03-142-3॥
[तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; दहति (dahati) - burns; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; तूलराशिम् (tūlarāśim) - a heap of cotton; इव (iva) - like; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire; यत् (yat) - because; च (ca) - and; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); उपान्तिके (upāntike) - nearby;]
(That to me burns limbs, like fire a heap of cotton, and because hero not I see Dhananjaya nearby.)
That (pain) burns my limbs like fire burns a heap of cotton, and because I do not see the hero Dhananjaya nearby. (03-142-3)
तस्य दर्शनतृष्णं मां सानुजं वनमास्थितम्। याज्ञसेन्याः परामर्शः स च वीर दहत्युत ॥०३-१४२-४॥
tasya darśanatṛṣṇaṃ māṃ sānujaṃ vanamāsthitaṃ। yājñasenyāḥ parāmarśaḥ sa ca vīra dahatyuta॥03-142-4॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; दर्शनतृष्णं (darśanatṛṣṇam) - longing to see; मां (māṃ) - me; सानुजं (sānujam) - with younger brother; वनमास्थितम् (vanamāsthitam) - dwelling in the forest; याज्ञसेन्याः (yājñasenyāḥ) - of Yājñasenī (Draupadī); परामर्शः (parāmarśaḥ) - remembering; स (sa) - that; च (ca) - and; वीर (vīra) - O hero; दहत्युत (dahatyuta) - burns indeed;]
(Of him the longing to see me, dwelling in the forest with my younger brother, the remembering of Yājñasenī— that, O hero, burns indeed.)
His longing to see me with my younger brother, living in the forest, and Yājñasenī’s remembrance—these, O hero, truly burn (my heart). (03-142-4)
नकुलात्पूर्वजं पार्थं न पश्याम्यमितौजसम्। अजेयमुग्रधन्वानं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥०३-१४२-५॥
nakulātpūrvajaṃ pārthaṃ na paśyāmyamitaujasam. ajeyamugradhanuvānaṃ tena tapye vṛkodara ॥03-142-5॥
[नकुलात्पूर्वजं (nakulātpūrvajam) - the elder of Nakula; पार्थं (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasam) - of unlimited energy; अजेयम् (ajeyam) - unconquerable; उग्रधन्वानम् (ugradhanuvānam) - wielder of fierce bow; तेन (tena) - on that account; तप्ये (tapye) - I am tormented; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma);]
(The elder of Nakula, Pārtha, of unlimited energy, I do not see; unconquerable, wielder of fierce bow— on that account, I am tormented, O Vṛkodara.)
O Vṛkodara, because I do not see Pārtha, the elder of Nakula, who is of unlimited energy, unconquerable, and a wielder of a fierce bow, I am distressed. (03-142-5)
तीर्थानि चैव रम्याणि वनानि च सरांसि च। चरामि सह युष्माभिस्तस्य दर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥०३-१४२-६॥
tīrthāni caiva ramyāṇi vanāni ca sarāṃsi ca। carāmi saha yuṣmābhiḥ tasya darśanakāṅkṣayā ॥03-142-6॥
[तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred fords; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - pleasant; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; च (ca) - and; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; चरामि (carāmi) - I wander; सह (saha) - with; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - you (plural, instrumental); तस्य (tasya) - of him; दर्शनकाङ्क्षया (darśanakāṅkṣayā) - with the longing to see;]
(Sacred fords and indeed pleasant forests and lakes and I wander with you (all), with the longing to see him.)
I wander with you to sacred fords, delightful forests, and lakes, longing to behold him. (03-142-6)
पञ्च वर्षाण्यहं वीरं सत्यसन्धं धनञ्जयम्। यन्न पश्यामि बीभत्सुं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥०३-१४२-७॥
pañca varṣāṇy ahaṃ vīraṃ satyasaṃdhaṃ dhanañjayam। yan na paśyāmi bībhatsuṃ tena tapye vṛkodara ॥03-142-7॥
[पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; अहम् (aham) - I; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; सत्यसन्धम् (satyasaṃdham) - truthful; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; यत् (yat) - that; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; बीभत्सुम् (bībhatsum) - Bībhatsu; तेन (tena) - by that; तप्ये (tapye) - I am afflicted; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara;]
(Five years I, the hero, the truthful Dhanañjaya, that not I see Bībhatsu, by that I am afflicted, Vṛkodara.)
Vṛkodara, for five years, I have not seen Bībhatsu, the heroic and truthful Dhanañjaya; because of that, I am afflicted. (03-142-7)
तं वै श्यामं गुडाकेशं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम्। न पश्यामि महाबाहुं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥०३-१४२-८॥
taṁ vai śyāmaṁ guḍākeśaṁ siṁhavikrāntagāminam। na paśyāmi mahābāhuṁ tena tapye vṛkodara ॥03-142-8॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; श्यामं (śyāmaṁ) - dark-complexioned; गुडाकेशं (guḍākeśaṁ) - Guḍākeśa (the one of thick/curly hair, epithet of Arjuna); सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम् (siṁhavikrāntagāminam) - him whose gait is as that of a lion; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṁ) - the mighty-armed; तेन (tena) - therefore; तप्ये (tapye) - I am tormented; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara (wolf-bellied, Bhīma);]
(Him indeed, the dark-complexioned Guḍākeśa, whose gait is like that of a lion, I do not see, the mighty-armed; therefore, I am tormented, O Vṛkodara.)
O Vṛkodara, I do not see that dark-complexioned, lion-gaited, mighty-armed Guḍākeśa; because of that, I am afflicted. (03-142-8)
कृतास्त्रं निपुणं युद्धे प्रतिमानं धनुष्मताम्। न पश्यामि नरश्रेष्ठं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर ॥०३-१४२-९॥
kṛtāstraṁ nipuṇaṁ yuddhe pratimānaṁ dhanuṣmatām। na paśyāmi naraśreṣṭhaṁ tena tapye vṛkodara ॥03-142-9॥
[कृतास्त्रं (kṛtāstram) - one who has mastered weapons; निपुणं (nipuṇam) - skilled; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; प्रतिमानं (pratimānam) - equal; धनुष्मताम् (dhanuṣmatām) - among bowmen; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; नरश्रेष्ठं (naraśreṣṭham) - best among men; तेन (tena) - by him; तप्ये (tapye) - I am afflicted; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - O Vṛkodara (Bhīma);]
(One who has mastered weapons, skilled in battle, equal among bowmen, not I see, best among men; by him I am afflicted, O Vṛkodara.)
O Vṛkodara, I do not see among bowmen, even among those who have mastered weapons and are skilled in battle, anyone equal to that best among men; by him I am afflicted. (03-142-9)
चरन्तमरिसङ्घेषु कालं क्रुद्धमिवान्तकम्। प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं सिंहस्कन्धं धनञ्जयम् ॥०३-१४२-१०॥
carantam arisaṅgheṣu kālaṃ kruddham ivāntakam। prabhinnam iva mātaṅgaṃ siṃhaskandhaṃ dhanañjayam ॥03-142-10॥
[चरन्तम् (carantam) - moving; roaming; अरिसङ्घेषु (arisaṅgheṣu) - in groups of enemies; कालम् (kālam) - Time (as Death); क्रुद्धम् (kruddham) - angry; इव (iva) - like; as if; अन्तकम् (antakam) - Yama; the destroyer; प्रभिन्नम् (prabhinnam) - broken; burst forth; इव (iva) - like; as if; मातङ्गम् (mātaṅgam) - elephant; सिंहस्कन्धम् (siṃhaskandham) - lion-shouldered; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna);]
(Moving in the groups of enemies, Time (as Death), angry, like the destroyer; burst forth, like an elephant, lion-shouldered, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).)
Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), lion-shouldered, moved among the groups of enemies like Time (Death), angry like the destroyer, like an elephant breaking loose. (03-142-10)
यः स शक्रादनवरो वीर्येण द्रविणेन च। यमयोः पूर्वजः पार्थः श्वेताश्वोऽमितविक्रमः ॥०३-१४२-११॥
yaḥ sa śakrādanavaro vīryeṇa draviṇena ca। yamayoḥ pūrvajaḥ pārthaḥ śvetāśvo'mitavikramaḥ ॥03-142-11॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (sa) - he; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - from Indra; अनवरः (anavaraḥ) - not inferior; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - in strength; द्रविणेन (draviṇena) - in wealth; च (ca) - and; यमयोः (yamayoḥ) - of Yama (the two Yamas, i.e., Yama and his twin); पूर्वजः (pūrvajaḥ) - elder brother; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); श्वेताश्वः (śvetāśvaḥ) - having white horses; अमितविक्रमः (amitavikramaḥ) - of immeasurable valor;]
(Who, he, from Indra, not inferior, in strength, in wealth, and; of Yama (the two Yamas), elder brother, Pārtha (Arjuna), having white horses, of immeasurable valor.)
He, who is in no way inferior to Indra in strength and wealth, the elder brother of the two sons of Yama, Pārtha (Arjuna), whose horses are white and whose valor is immeasurable. (03-142-11)
दुःखेन महताविष्टः स्वकृतेनानिवर्तिना। अजेयमुग्रधन्वानं तं न पश्यामि फल्गुनम् ॥०३-१४२-१२॥
duḥkhena mahatāviṣṭaḥ svakṛtenānivartinā। ajeyam ugradhanvānaṃ taṃ na paśyāmi phalgūnam ॥03-142-12॥
[दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by sorrow; महताविष्टः (mahatā-āviṣṭaḥ) - overpowered by great (sorrow); स्वकृतेन (svakṛtena) - by his own act; अनिवर्तिना (anivartinā) - irreversible; अजेयम् (ajeyam) - unconquerable; उग्रधन्वानम् (ugradhanvānam) - the one with formidable bow; तं (tam) - him; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; फल्गुनम् (phalgūnam) - Phalguna (Arjuna);]
(By sorrow, overpowered by great (sorrow), by his own irreversible act, the unconquerable, the one with a formidable bow, him, not, I see, Phalguna.)
Overcome with great sorrow by his own irreversible act, I do not see Phalguna, the unconquerable bearer of the mighty bow. (03-142-12)
सततं यः क्षमाशीलः क्षिप्यमाणोऽप्यणीयसा। ऋजुमार्गप्रपन्नस्य शर्मदाताभयस्य च ॥०३-१४२-१३॥
satataṃ yaḥ kṣamāśīlaḥ kṣipyamāṇo'py aṇīyasā। ṛjumārgaprapannasya śarmadātābhayasya ca ॥03-142-13॥
[सततं (satataṃ) - always; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षमाशीलः (kṣamāśīlaḥ) - of forgiving nature; क्षिप्यमाणः (kṣipyamāṇaḥ) - though being insulted; अपि (api) - even; अणीयसा (aṇīyasā) - by someone lesser (inferior); ऋजुमार्गप्रपन्नस्य (ṛjumārgaprapannasya) - to one who has taken the straight path; शर्मदाताभयस्य (śarmadātābhayasya) - of one who gives happiness and safety; च (ca) - and;]
(Always who of forgiving nature though being insulted even by someone lesser to one who has taken the straight path, of one who gives happiness and safety and.)
He who is always of forgiving nature, even when insulted by someone lesser; who gives happiness and safety to one who follows the straight path—such a person...
स तु जिह्मप्रवृत्तस्य माययाभिजिघांसतः। अपि वज्रधरस्यापि भवेत्कालविषोपमः ॥०३-१४२-१४॥
sa tu jihmapravṛttasya māyayābhijighāṃsataḥ। api vajradharasyāpi bhavet kālavaṣopamaḥ ॥03-142-14॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; जिह्मप्रवृत्तस्य (jihmapravṛttasya) - of one whose conduct is crooked; मायया (māyayā) - by deceit; अभिजिघांसतः (abhijighāṃsataḥ) - wishing to harm; अपि (api) - even; वज्रधरस्य (vajradharasya) - of the wielder of the thunderbolt; अपि (api) - even; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; कालविषोपमः (kālavaṣopamaḥ) - like the poison of Death;]
(He, but, of one whose conduct is crooked, by deceit, wishing to harm, even of the wielder of the thunderbolt, even, may become, like the poison of Death.)
But he, wishing to harm by crooked conduct and deceit, may become like the poison of Death even to the wielder of the thunderbolt. (03-142-14)
शत्रोरपि प्रपन्नस्य सोऽनृशंसः प्रतापवान्। दाताभयस्य बीभत्सुरमितात्मा महाबलः ॥०३-१४२-१५॥
śatror api prapannasya so' nṛśaṃsaḥ pratāpavān। dātābhayasya bībhatsur amitātmā mahābalaḥ ॥03-142-15॥
[शत्रोः (śatroḥ) - of the enemy; अपि (api) - even; प्रपन्नस्य (prapannasya) - of one who has sought refuge; सः (saḥ) - he; अनृशंसः (anṛśaṃsaḥ) - compassionate; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; दाता (dātā) - giver; अभयस्य (abhayasya) - of safety; बीभत्सु (bībhatsu) - to the fearful; अमितात्मा (amitātmā) - of boundless spirit; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - having great strength;]
(Of the enemy even of one who has sought refuge, he compassionate, powerful, giver of safety to the fearful, of boundless spirit, having great strength.)
He shows compassion and power even towards an enemy who has sought refuge, gives safety to the fearful, possesses a boundless spirit, and has immense strength. (03-142-15)
सर्वेषामाश्रयोऽस्माकं रणेऽरीणां प्रमर्दिता। आहर्ता सर्वरत्नानां सर्वेषां नः सुखावहः ॥०३-१४२-१६॥
sarveṣām āśrayo'smākaṃ raṇe'rīṇāṃ pramarditā। āhartā sarvaratnānāṃ sarveṣāṃ naḥ sukhāvahaḥ ॥03-142-16॥
[सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; universal; collective; आश्रयः (āśrayaḥ) - refuge; shelter; support; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; our; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; upon the battlefield; अरीणाम् (arīṇām) - of enemies; प्रमर्दिता (pramarditā) - destroyer; crusher; आहर्ता (āhartā) - gatherer; bringer; collector; सर्वरत्नानाम् (sarvaratnānām) - of all jewels; of all treasures; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; universal; collective; नः (naḥ) - for us; to us; our; सुखावहः (sukhāvahaḥ) - bringer of happiness; bestower of pleasure;]
(Of all, refuge our, in battle of enemies destroyer; gatherer of all treasures, of all, to us, bringer of happiness.)
He is the refuge of all, the destroyer of our enemies in battle; the gatherer of all treasures, the bringer of happiness for us all. (03-142-16)
रत्नानि यस्य वीर्येण दिव्यान्यासन्पुरा मम। बहूनि बहुजातानि यानि प्राप्तः सुयोधनः ॥०३-१४२-१७॥
ratnāni yasya vīryeṇa divyāny āsan purā mama। bahūni bahujātāni yāni prāptaḥ suyodhanaḥ॥03-142-17॥
[रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; diamonds; यस्य (yasya) - by whose; of whom; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by power; by vigor; by strength; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; celestial; आसन् (āsan) - were; existed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; long ago; मम (mama) - my; belonging to me; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; बहुजातानि (bahujātāni) - of many kinds; of various sorts; यानि (yāni) - which; those which; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; achieved; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
(Gems by whose power, divine, were formerly mine; many, of various kinds, which Suyodhana has obtained.)
The divine gems, which were once mine by virtue of his power, of many and various kinds, have now been obtained by Suyodhana. (03-142-17)
यस्य बाहुबलाद्वीर सभा चासीत्पुरा मम। सर्वरत्नमयी ख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु पाण्डव ॥०३-१४२-१८॥
yasya bāhubalād vīra sabhā ca āsīt purā mama। sarvaratnamayī khyātā triṣu lokeṣu pāṇḍava॥ 03-142-18॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whose; बाहुबलात् (bāhubalāt) - from the strength of (his) arms; वीर (vīra) - O hero; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; पुरा (purā) - formerly; मम (mama) - my; सर्वरत्नमयी (sarvaratnamayī) - made of all gems; ख्याता (khyātā) - renowned; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(Of whose strength of arms, O hero, the assembly hall, formerly mine, and made of all gems, was renowned in the three worlds, O Pāṇḍava.)
O Pāṇḍava, the assembly hall which, by his strength of arms, belonged to me formerly—made of all gems—was renowned in all the three worlds. (03-142-18)
वासुदेवसमं वीर्ये कार्तवीर्यसमं युधि। अजेयमजितं युद्धे तं न पश्यामि फल्गुनम् ॥०३-१४२-१९॥
vāsudevasamaṃ vīrye kārtavīryasamaṃ yudhi। ajeyam ajitaṃ yuddhe taṃ na paśyāmi phalgunam॥03-142-19॥
[वासुदेवसमम् (vāsudevasamam) - equal to Vāsudeva; वीर्ये (vīrye) - in strength; कार्तवीर्यसमम् (kārtavīryasamam) - equal to Kārtavīrya; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; अजेयम् (ajeyam) - unconquerable; अजितम् (ajitam) - not yet conquered; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; तम् (tam) - him; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; फल्गुनम् (phalgunam) - Phalguna (Arjuna);]

I do not see Phalguna (Arjuna), who is equal to Vāsudeva in strength, equal to Kārtavīrya in battle, unconquerable and undefeated in battle. (03-142-19)
सङ्कर्षणं महावीर्यं त्वां च भीमापराजितम्। अनुजातः स वीर्येण वासुदेवं च शत्रुहा ॥०३-१४२-२०॥
saṅkarṣaṇaṃ mahāvīryaṃ tvāṃ ca bhīmāparājitam। anujātaḥ sa vīryeṇa vāsudevaṃ ca śatruhā ॥03-142-20॥
[सङ्कर्षणं (saṅkarṣaṇam) - Saṅkarṣaṇa; (Balarāma, proper noun); महावीर्यं (mahāvīryam) - of great strength; त्वां (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; भीमापराजितम् (bhīmāparājitam) - Bhīma, the unconquered; अनुजातः (anujātaḥ) - born after; younger brother; स (sa) - he; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - in strength; वासुदेवं (vāsudevam) - Vāsudeva; (Kṛṣṇa, proper noun); च (ca) - and; शत्रुहा (śatruhā) - destroyer of enemies;]

The destroyer of enemies, born after by strength, is Saṅkarṣaṇa of great strength, you, and the unconquered Bhīma, as well as Vāsudeva. (03-142-20)
यस्य बाहुबले तुल्यः प्रभावे च पुरंदरः। जवे वायुर्मुखे सोमः क्रोधे मृत्युः सनातनः ॥०३-१४२-२१॥
yasya bāhubale tulyaḥ prabhāve ca puraṁdaraḥ। jave vāyuḥmukhe somaḥ krodhe mṛtyuḥ sanātanaḥ ॥03-142-21॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; बाहुबले (bāhubale) - in arm strength; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; प्रभावे (prabhāve) - in power; च (ca) - and; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Indra; जवे (jave) - in swiftness; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu (Wind); मुखे (mukhe) - in face; सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma; क्रोधे (krodhe) - in anger; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - Death; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Whose in arm strength is equal; in power (is) Indra; in swiftness (is) Vāyu; in face (is) Soma; in anger (is) Death eternal.)
He whose arm strength rivals Indra, whose power is that of Indra, whose swiftness is like the Wind, whose face is like Soma, and whose anger is like Death eternal. (03-142-21)
ते वयं तं नरव्याघ्रं सर्वे वीर दिदृक्षवः। प्रवेक्ष्यामो महाबाहो पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥०३-१४२-२२॥
te vayaṃ taṃ naravyāghraṃ sarve vīra didṛkṣavaḥ. pravekṣyāmo mahābāho parvataṃ gandhamādanam ॥03-142-22॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; तं (taṃ) - that; नरव्याघ्रं (naravyāghram) - tiger among men; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वीर (vīra) - hero; दिदृक्षवः (didṛkṣavaḥ) - desiring to see; प्रवेक्ष्यामः (pravekṣyāmaḥ) - we shall enter; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamadana;]
(They we that tiger among men all hero desiring to see, we shall enter, O mighty-armed, the mountain Gandhamadana.)
O mighty-armed hero, we all desire to see that tiger among men; therefore, we shall enter the Gandhamadana mountain. (03-142-22)
विशाला बदरी यत्र नरनारायणाश्रमः। तं सदाध्युषितं यक्षैर्द्रक्ष्यामो गिरिमुत्तमम् ॥०३-१४२-२३॥
viśālā badarī yatra nara-nārāyaṇāśramaḥ। taṃ sadādhyuṣitaṃ yakṣair drakṣyāmo girim uttamam ॥03-142-23॥
[विशाला (viśālā) - great; extensive; बदरी (badarī) - Badarī (proper noun; name of sacred place); यत्र (yatra) - where; नरनारायणाश्रमः (nara-nārāyaṇāśramaḥ) - the hermitage of Nara and Nārāyaṇa; तं (taṃ) - that; सदा (sadā) - always; अध्युषितं (adhyuṣitaṃ) - inhabited; यक्षैः (yakṣaiḥ) - by Yakṣas; द्रक्ष्यामः (drakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall see; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - best; highest;]
(Great Badarī where the hermitage of Nara and Nārāyaṇa (is); that always inhabited by Yakṣas mountain best we shall see.)
We will see that excellent mountain, the great Badarī, where lies the hermitage of Nara and Nārāyaṇa, always inhabited by Yakṣas. (03-142-23)
कुबेरनलिनीं रम्यां राक्षसैरभिरक्षिताम्। पद्भिरेव गमिष्यामस्तप्यमाना महत्तपः ॥०३-१४२-२४॥
kubera-nalinīṁ ramyāṁ rākṣasair abhirakṣitām। padbhir eva gamiṣyāmas tapyamānā mahattapaḥ ॥03-142-24॥
[कुबेरनलिनीं (kubera-nalinīṁ) - Kubera's lotus-pond; रम्यां (ramyām) - beautiful; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - by rākṣasas; अभिरक्षिताम् (abhirakṣitām) - well-guarded; पद्भिः (padbhiḥ) - on foot; एव (eva) - indeed; गमिष्यामः (gamiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall go; तप्यमानाः (tapyamānāḥ) - enduring (austerity); महत् (mahat) - great; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
(Kubera's lotus-pond, beautiful, by rākṣasas well-guarded; on foot indeed we shall go, enduring great austerity.)
We shall proceed on foot to the beautiful Kubera's lotus pond, well guarded by rākṣasas, enduring great austerity. (03-142-24)
नातप्ततपसा शक्यो देशो गन्तुं वृकोदर। न नृशंसेन लुब्धेन नाप्रशान्तेन भारत ॥०३-१४२-२५॥
nātaptatapasā śakyo deśo gantuṃ vṛkodara. na nṛśaṃsena lubdhena nāpraśāntena bhārata ॥03-142-25॥
[नातप्ततपसा (nātaptatapasā) - not by one whose austerities are not heated; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to be gone; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara; न (na) - not; नृशंसेन (nṛśaṃsena) - by the cruel; लुब्धेन (lubdhena) - by the greedy; नाप्रशान्तेन (nāpraśāntena) - not by the one not tranquil; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(O Vṛkodara, the region is not possible to be gone by one whose austerities are not heated, not by the cruel, not by the greedy, nor by one who is not tranquil, O Bhārata.)
O Vṛkodara, O Bhārata, this region cannot be traversed by one who has not undergone austerity, nor by the cruel, the greedy, or by anyone lacking tranquillity. (03-142-25)
तत्र सर्वे गमिष्यामो भीमार्जुनपदैषिणः। सायुधा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशाः सह विप्रैर्महाव्रतैः ॥०३-१४२-२६॥
tatra sarve gamiṣyāmo bhīmārjunapadaiṣiṇaḥ। sāyudhā baddhanistriṃśāḥ saha viprairmahāvrataiḥ॥03-142-26॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गमिष्यामः (gamiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall go; भीमार्जुनपदैषिणः (bhīmārjunapadaiṣiṇaḥ) - seeking the footsteps of Bhīma and Arjuna; सायुधाः (sāyudhāḥ) - armed; बद्धनिस्त्रिंशाः (baddhanistriṃśāḥ) - with swords bound (to our sides); सह (saha) - together with; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - with the Brāhmaṇas; महाव्रतैः (mahāvrataiḥ) - great vow-observers;]
(There all we shall go, seeking the footsteps of Bhīma and Arjuna, armed, with swords bound, together with the Brāhmaṇas, the great vow-observers.)
There, all of us shall go, following in the footsteps of Bhīma and Arjuna, armed with swords at our sides, together with the Brāhmaṇas who observe great vows. (03-142-26)
मक्षिकान्मशकान्दंशान्व्याघ्रान्सिंहान्सरीसृपान्। प्राप्नोत्यनियतः पार्थ नियतस्तान्न पश्यति ॥०३-१४२-२७॥
makṣikān maśakān daṃśān vyāghrān siṃhān sarīsṛpān। prāpnoty aniyataḥ pārtha niyataḥ tān na paśyati॥03-142-27॥
[मक्षिकान् (makṣikān) - flies; मशकान् (maśakān) - mosquitoes; दंशान् (daṃśān) - biting insects; व्याघ्रान् (vyāghrān) - tigers; सिंहान् (siṃhān) - lions; सरीसृपान् (sarīsṛpān) - reptiles; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - encounters; अनियतः (aniyataḥ) - one who is not self-controlled; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; नियतः (niyataḥ) - one who is self-controlled; तान् (tān) - them; न (na) - not; पश्यति (paśyati) - perceives;]
(Flies, mosquitoes, biting insects, tigers, lions, reptiles, encounters one who is not self-controlled, O Pārtha; one who is self-controlled, them, not, perceives.)
O Pārtha, one who is not self-controlled encounters flies, mosquitoes, biting insects, tigers, lions, and reptiles; but one who is self-controlled does not perceive them. (3-142-27)
ते वयं नियतात्मानः पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्। प्रवेक्ष्यामो मिताहारा धनञ्जयदिदृक्षवः ॥०३-१४२-२८॥
te vayaṃ niyatātmānaḥ parvataṃ gandhamādanam। pravekṣyāmo mitāhārā dhanañjayadidṛkṣavaḥ ॥03-142-28॥
[ते (te) - they; (but here: we; as a particle); वयम् (vayam) - we; (first person plural pronoun); नियतात्मानः (niyatātmānaḥ) - self-controlled; restrained-minded; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamādana; (name of the mountain); प्रवेक्ष्यामः (pravekṣyāmaḥ) - we shall enter; we will proceed into; मिताहाराः (mitāhārāḥ) - moderate in food; of measured diet; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - Dhanañjaya; (Arjuna; name of a hero); इदृक्षवः (idṛkṣavaḥ) - desirous to see; wishing to behold;]
(They, we self-controlled, the mountain Gandhamādana, we shall enter, moderate in food, Dhanañjaya-desirous to see.)
Therefore, we who are self-controlled and moderate in food shall enter the Gandhamādana mountain, wishing to see Dhanañjaya. (03-142-28)
