एवमुक्तो महाबाहुर्भीमसेनः प्रतापवान्। प्रणिपत्य ततः प्रीत्या भ्रातरं हृष्टमानसः ॥ उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा हनूमन्तं कपीश्वरम् ॥०३-१४८-१॥
evam-ukto mahābāhur-bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān। praṇipatya tataḥ prītyā bhrātaraṃ hṛṣṭamānasaḥ॥ uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā hanūmantaṃ kapīśvaram॥03-148-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - glorious; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed down; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; हृष्टमानसः (hṛṣṭamānasaḥ) - with delighted mind; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; हनूमन्तम् (hanūmantam) - to Hanuman; कपीश्वरम् (kapīśvaram) - lord of monkeys;]
(Thus having been addressed, the mighty-armed and glorious Bhīmasena, having bowed down then, with affection, to his brother, with delighted mind, spoke with gentle speech to Hanuman, the lord of monkeys.)
After being thus addressed, the mighty-armed and illustrious Bhīmasena bowed down with affection to his brother, his mind delighted, and then spoke gently to Hanuman, the lord of the monkeys. (03-148-1)
मया धन्यतरो नास्ति यदार्यं दृष्टवानहम्। अनुग्रहो मे सुमहांस्तृप्तिश्च तव दर्शनात् ॥०३-१४८-२॥
mayā dhanyataro nāsti yad āryaṃ dṛṣṭavān aham। anugraho me sumahāṃs tṛptiś ca tava darśanāt ॥03-148-2॥

(By me, more fortunate there is not, that the noble one I have seen. Favor to me very great and satisfaction from your sight.)
There is none more fortunate than I, for I have seen you, O noble one. I have received very great favor and satisfaction from seeing you. (03-148-2)
एवं तु कृतमिच्छामि त्वयार्याद्य प्रियं मम। यत्ते तदासीत्प्लवतः सागरं मकरालयम् ॥ रूपमप्रतिमं वीर तदिच्छामि निरीक्षितुम् ॥०३-१४८-३॥
evaṃ tu kṛtam icchāmi tvayā ārya ādyam priyaṃ mama। yat te tad āsīt plavataḥ sāgaraṃ makarālayam ॥ rūpam apratimaṃ vīra tad icchāmi nirīkṣitum ॥03-148-3॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तु (tu) - but; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आर्य (ārya) - O noble one; आद्य (ādyam) - primordial; first; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; मम (mama) - to me; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - of you; तत् (tat) - that; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; प्लवतः (plavataḥ) - of (one) leaping; सागरं (sāgaram) - the ocean; मकरालयम् (makarālayam) - abode of makaras (sea-creatures); रूपम् (rūpam) - form; अप्रतिमं (apratimam) - incomparable; वीर (vīra) - O hero; तत् (tat) - that; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; निरीक्षितुम् (nirīkṣitum) - to behold;]
(Thus but what is done I desire by you, O noble one, the first dear (thing) to me. Which of you that was (when) leaping (over) the ocean, the abode of makaras. The form incomparable, O hero, that I desire to behold.)
Thus, O noble one, I wish you would now do what is most dear to me. That form of yours which existed when you leaped over the ocean, the abode of makaras, O hero—that incomparable form I wish to behold. (03-148-3)
एवं तुष्टो भविष्यामि श्रद्धास्यामि च ते वचः। एवमुक्तः स तेजस्वी प्रहस्य हरिरब्रवीत् ॥०३-१४८-४॥
evaṃ tuṣṭo bhaviṣyāmi śraddhāsyāmi ca te vacaḥ। evam-uktaḥ sa tejasvī prahasya harir-abravīt ॥03-148-4॥

(Thus I shall be pleased, I shall believe your speech. Thus addressed, the radiant one, having laughed, Hari said.)
"Thus I shall be pleased and shall have faith in your words." Thus addressed, the radiant Hari laughed and said. (03-148-4)
न तच्छक्यं त्वया द्रष्टुं रूपं नान्येन केनचित्। कालावस्था तदा ह्यन्या वर्तते सा न साम्प्रतम् ॥०३-१४८-५॥
na tac chakyaṁ tvayā draṣṭuṁ rūpaṁ nānyena kenacit। kālāvasthā tadā hy anyā vartate sā na sāmpratam ॥03-148-5॥
[न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; न (na) - not; अन्येन (anyena) - by another; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; कालावस्था (kālāvasthā) - state of time; तदा (tadā) - then; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्या (anyā) - another; वर्तते (vartate) - prevails; सा (sā) - she; (here: that [state]) न (na) - not; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - now;]
(Not that possible by you to see the form, nor by another, by anyone. State of time then indeed another prevails, that not now.)
That form is not possible for you to see, nor for anyone else. For at that time, a different state prevails; that is not the present (now). (03-148-5)
अन्यः कृतयुगे कालस्त्रेतायां द्वापरेऽपरः। अयं प्रध्वंसनः कालो नाद्य तद्रूपमस्ति मे ॥०३-१४८-६॥
anyaḥ kṛtayuge kālas tretāyāṃ dvāpare'paraḥ। ayaṃ pradhvaṃsanaḥ kālo nādya tadrūpam asti me॥03-148-6॥
[अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; different; कृतयुगे (kṛtayuge) - in the Kṛta Yuga; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; age; त्रेतायाम् (tretāyām) - in the Tretā Yuga; द्वापरे (dvāpare) - in the Dvāpara Yuga; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; different; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्रध्वंसनः (pradhvaṃsanaḥ) - destructive; causing destruction; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; age; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; now; तत् (tat) - that; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; nature; अस्ति (asti) - is; मे (me) - for me; to me;]
(Another (is) time in the Kṛta Yuga, another (time) in Tretā, another (time) in Dvāpara; this (is) destructive time; not now that form (is) for me (belongs to me).)
There was a different age in the Kṛta Yuga, another in the Tretā Yuga, and another in the Dvāpara; now, this is the time of destruction—my form is not as it was then. (03-148-6)
भूमिर्नद्यो नगाः शैलाः सिद्धा देवा महर्षयः। कालं समनुवर्तन्ते यथा भावा युगे युगे ॥ बलवर्ष्मप्रभावा हि प्रहीयन्त्युद्भवन्ति च ॥०३-१४८-७॥
bhūmirnadyo nagāḥ śailāḥ siddhā devā maharṣayaḥ। kālaṃ samanuvartante yathā bhāvā yuge yuge॥ balavarṣmaprabhāvā hi prahīyantyudbhavanti ca॥03-148-7॥
[भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) (bhūmiḥ) - earth; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) (nadyaḥ) - rivers; नगाः (nagāḥ) (nagāḥ) - mountains; शैलाः (śailāḥ) (śailāḥ) - rocks; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; देवाः (devāḥ) (devāḥ) - gods; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; कालम् (kālam) (kālam) - time; समनुवर्तन्ते (samanuvartante) (samanuvartante) - completely follow; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as; भावाः (bhāvāḥ) (bhāvāḥ) - entities; युगे युगे (yuge yuge) (yuge yuge) - in every age; बल- (bala-) (bala-) - strength; वर्ष्म- (varṣma-) (varṣma-) - body; प्रभावाः (prabhāvāḥ) (prabhāvāḥ) - powers; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; प्रहीयन्ति (prahīyanti) (prahīyanti) - wane; उद्भवन्ति (udbhavanti) (udbhavanti) - arise; च (ca) (ca) - and;]
(Earth, rivers, mountains, rocks, perfected beings, gods, and great sages entirely follow time just as entities in every age. Strength, body, and powers indeed wane and arise.)
Earth, rivers, mountains, rocks, perfected beings, gods, and great sages all follow time, just as all things do in every age; indeed, strength, bodies, and powers diminish and arise. (03-148-7)
तदलं तव तद्रूपं द्रष्टुं कुरुकुलोद्वह। युगं समनुवर्तामि कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥०३-१४८-८॥
tad alaṁ tava tad rūpaṁ draṣṭuṁ kurukulo̱dvaha. yugaṁ samanuvartāmi kālo hi duratikramaḥ ॥03-148-8॥
[तद् (tad) - therefore; अलम् (alam) - enough; तव (tava) - of you; तत् (tat) - that; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; कुरुकुलोद्वह (kurukulo̱dvaha) - O best of the Kuru lineage; युगम् (yugam) - age; समनुवर्तामि (samanuvartāmi) - I follow; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; हि (hi) - indeed; दुरतिक्रमः (duratikramaḥ) - difficult to transgress;]
(Therefore, enough of your seeing that form, O best of the Kuru lineage. The age I follow; time indeed is difficult to transgress.)
Therefore, enough of you beholding that form, O best of the Kurus. I follow the age; for time is indeed difficult to overcome. (3-148-8)

yugasaṅkhyāṃ samācakṣva ācāraṃ ca yuge yuge. dharmakāmārthabhāvāṃśca varṣma vīryaṃ bhavābhavau ॥03-148-9॥
[युगसङ्ख्यां (yugasaṅkhyām) - the number of yugas; समाचक्ष्व (samācakṣva) - tell; आचारं (ācāram) - conduct; च (ca) - and; युगे युगे (yuge yuge) - in each yuga; धर्मकामार्थभावांश्च (dharmakāmārthabhāvāṃś ca) - the aspects/entities of dharma, kāma, artha, and also; वर्ष्म (varṣma) - body; वीर्यं (vīryam) - energy; भवाभवौ (bhavābhavau) - existence and non-existence;]

कृतं नाम युगं तात यत्र धर्मः सनातनः। कृतमेव न कर्तव्यं तस्मिन्काले युगोत्तमे ॥०३-१४८-१०॥
kṛtaṃ nāma yugaṃ tāta yatra dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ। kṛtaṃ eva na kartavyaṃ tasmin kāle yugottame ॥03-148-10॥
[कृतं (kṛtam) - the done; accomplished; नाम (nāma) - called; named; युगं (yugam) - age; period; तात (tāta) - dear one; father; यत्र (yatra) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; righteousness; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; कृतमेव (kṛtam eva) - exactly what is done; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - ought to be done; तस्मिन्काले (tasmin kāle) - in that time; युगोत्तमे (yugottame) - in the best of ages; ॥०३-१४८-१०॥ (॥03-148-10॥) -;]
(The age called Kṛta, dear one, where Dharma is eternal; exactly what is done is not to be done in that time, in the best of ages.)
The age known as Kṛta, dear one, is when Dharma is eternal; in that supreme age, what has been done alone should not be done again. (03-148-10)
न तत्र धर्माः सीदन्ति न क्षीयन्ते च वै प्रजाः। ततः कृतयुगं नाम कालेन गुणतां गतम् ॥०३-१४८-११॥
na tatra dharmāḥ sīdanti na kṣīyante ca vai prajāḥ। tataḥ kṛtayugaṃ nāma kālena guṇatāṃ gatam ॥03-148-11॥
[न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - dharmas; सीदन्ति (sīdanti) - sink; न (na) - not; क्षीयन्ते (kṣīyante) - diminish; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; कृतयुगं (kṛtayugam) - Kṛta Yuga; नाम (nāma) - named; कालेन (kālena) - by time; गुणतां (guṇatām) - quality state; गतम् (gatam) - having attained;]
(Not there dharmas sink, not diminish and indeed creatures. Therefore Kṛta Yuga named, by time, to the state of quality, having attained.)
There, dharmas do not decline nor do creatures diminish; therefore, that period is called Kṛta Yuga, having attained a state of excellence by time. (03-148-11)
देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः। नासन्कृतयुगे तात तदा न क्रयविक्रयाः ॥०३-१४८-१२॥
devadānavagandharvayakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ। nāsankṛtayuge tāta tadā na krayavikrayāḥ॥03-148-12॥
[देवदानवगन्धर्वयक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः (devadānavagandharva-yakṣa-rākṣasa-pannagāḥ) - gods; demons; gandharvas; yakṣas; rākṣasas; serpents; all; न (na) - not; असन् (asan) - were; कृतयुगे (kṛtayuge) - in the Kṛta yuga; तात (tāta) - O dear one; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; क्रयविक्रयाः (krayavikrayāḥ) - buying (and) selling;]
(Gods, demons, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, serpents — not were in the Kṛta yuga, O dear one, then not buying and selling.)
Gods, demons, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and serpents — in the Kṛta yuga, O dear one, buying and selling did not exist at that time. (03-148-12)
न सामयजुऋग्वर्णाः क्रिया नासीच्च मानवी। अभिध्याय फलं तत्र धर्मः संन्यास एव च ॥०३-१४८-१३॥
na sāmayajur̥gvarṇāḥ kriyā nāsīc ca mānavī | abhidyāya phalaṃ tatra dharmaḥ saṃnyāsa eva ca ॥03-148-13॥
[न (na) - not; सामयजुऋग्वर्णाः (sāma-yaju-r̥g-varṇāḥ) - the reciters/words (varṇāḥ) of Sāma, Yajur, and Ṛg Veda; क्रिया (kriyā) - action; न (na) - not; आसीत् (āsīt) - existed; च (ca) - and; मानवी (mānavī) - human; अभिध्याय (abhidhyāya) - upon meditation/contemplation; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; तत्र (tatra) - there; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness (duty, law); संन्यास (saṃnyāsa) - renunciation; एव (eva) - alone; च (ca) - and;]
(Not (were) the reciters of Sāma, Yajur, and Ṛg, nor action, not (was) human (activity). Upon contemplation (was) the fruit there, righteousness and renunciation alone also.)
There were neither reciters of Sāma, Yajur, and Ṛg Vedas nor ritual actions nor human activities. There, the fruit was attained through contemplation; righteousness and renunciation alone prevailed. (03-148-13)
न तस्मिन्युगसंसर्गे व्याधयो नेन्द्रियक्षयः। नासूया नापि रुदितं न दर्पो नापि पैशुनम् ॥०३-१४८-१४॥
na tasmin yuga-saṁsarge vyādhayaḥ na indriya-kṣayaḥ। na asūyā na api ruditam na darpaḥ na api paiśunam ॥03-148-14॥
[न (na) - not; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युगसंसर्गे (yuga-saṁsarge) - in the conjunction of ages; व्याधयः (vyādhayaḥ) - diseases; न (na) - not; इन्द्रियक्षयः (indriya-kṣayaḥ) - decline of senses; न (na) - not; असूया (asūyā) - envy; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; रुदितं (ruditam) - weeping; न (na) - not; दर्पः (darpaḥ) - arrogance; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; पैशुनम् (paiśunam) - malice;]
(Not in that conjunction of the ages were diseases, not the decline of senses, not envy, not even weeping, not arrogance, not even malice.)
At that junction of the ages, there were no diseases, no decline of the senses, no envy, no weeping, no arrogance, and no malice. (03-148-14)
न विग्रहः कुतस्तन्द्री न द्वेषो नापि वैकृतम्। न भयं न च सन्तापो न चेर्ष्या न च मत्सरः ॥०३-१४८-१५॥
na vigrahaḥ kutas tandrī na dveṣo nāpi vaikṛtam। na bhayaṃ na ca santāpo na cerṣyā na ca matsaraḥ॥03-148-15॥
[न (na) - not; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; कुतः (kutas) - whence; तन्द्रि (tandrī) - sloth; न (na) - not; द्वेषः (dveṣaḥ) - hatred; नापि (nāpi) - nor indeed; वैकृतम् (vaikṛtam) - distortion; न (na) - not; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - affliction; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ईर्ष्या (īrṣyā) - jealousy; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मत्सरः (matsaraḥ) - envy;]
(Not conflict, whence sloth? Not hatred, nor indeed distortion. Not fear, nor affliction, nor jealousy, nor envy.)
There is no conflict; from where could there be sloth? There is no hatred, nor any distortion. There is no fear, nor affliction, nor jealousy, nor envy. (03-148-15)
ततः परमकं ब्रह्म या गतिर्योगिनां परा। आत्मा च सर्वभूतानां शुक्लो नारायणस्तदा ॥०३-१४८-१६॥
tataḥ paramakaṃ brahma yā gatiryogināṃ parā। ātmā ca sarvabhūtānāṃ śuklo nārāyaṇastadā ॥03-148-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परमकं (paramakaṃ) - supreme; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; या (yā) - which; गतिः (gatiḥ) - destination; योगिनाम् (yoginām) - of yogins; परा (parā) - highest; आत्मा (ātmā) - Self; च (ca) - and; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; शुक्लः (śuklaḥ) - pure; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then the supreme Brahman, which is the highest destination of yogins, and the Self of all beings, pure Nārāyaṇa then.)
Then, the supreme Brahman, which is the highest goal of yogins—the pure Nārāyaṇa, the Self of all beings—manifested at that time. (03-148-16)
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्च कृतलक्षणाः। कृते युगे समभवन्स्वकर्मनिरताः प्रजाः ॥०३-१४८-१७॥
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāś ca kṛtalakṣaṇāḥ। kṛte yuge samabhavan svakarmaniratāḥ prajāḥ ॥03-148-17॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - vaiśyas; शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - śūdras; च (ca) - and; कृतलक्षणाः (kṛtalakṣaṇāḥ) - marked by the characteristics of the Kṛta (age); कृते (kṛte) - in the Kṛta (Yuga); युगे (yuge) - in the age; समभवन् (samabhavan) - were born together; स्वकर्मनिरताः (svakarmaniratāḥ) - engaged in their own duties; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - people;]
(Brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, and śūdras—marked by the characteristics of the Kṛta (age)—in the Kṛta Yuga, were born together, people engaged in their own duties.)
In the Kṛta Yuga, brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, and śūdras, marked by the qualities of that age, were all born as people devoted to their own respective duties. (03-148-17)
समाश्रमं समाचारं समज्ञानमतीबलम्। तदा हि समकर्माणो वर्णा धर्मानवाप्नुवन् ॥०३-१४८-१८॥
samāśramaṃ samācāraṃ samajñānam-atībalam। tadā hi samakarmāṇo varṇā dharmān-avāpnuvan ॥03-148-18॥
[समाश्रमम् (samāśramam) - same āśrama; same order or stage of life; समाचारम् (samācāram) - same conduct; same behavior; समज्ञानम् (samajñānam) - same knowledge; अतीबलम् (atībalam) - exceedingly strong; very powerful; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; समकर्माणः (samakarmāṇaḥ) - those with same actions; those performing the same rituals; वर्णाः (varṇāḥ) - castes; orders; classes; धर्मान् (dharmān) - duties; righteous acts; laws; अवाप्नुवन् (avāpnuvan) - attained; reached;]
(Having the same āśrama, same conduct, same knowledge, exceedingly strong, then indeed, the castes, with same actions, attained (their) duties.)
At that time, when everyone belonged to the same order of life, had the same conduct, knowledge, and great strength, the castes, all performing the same actions, attained their duties. (03-148-18)
एकवेदसमायुक्ता एकमन्त्रविधिक्रियाः। पृथग्धर्मास्त्वेकवेदा धर्ममेकमनुव्रताः ॥०३-१४८-१९॥
ekavedasamāyuktā ekamantravidhikriyāḥ। pṛthagdharmāstveka vedā dharmamekamanuvratāḥ॥03-148-19॥
[एकवेदसमायुक्ता (ekavedasamāyuktā) - endowed with one Veda; एकमन्त्रविधिक्रियाः (ekamantravidhikriyāḥ) - having one mantra, ritual, and action; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - duties; तु (tu) - but; एकवेदा (eka vedā) - of one Veda; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; एकम् (ekam) - one; अनुव्रताः (anuvratāḥ) - following (having adopted);]
(Endowed with one Veda, having one mantra, ritual, and action; but the duties of one Veda (those who possess only one) separately (are) following one duty only.)
Those endowed with one Veda have only one mantra, ritual, and action; but those who possess only one Veda (their) duties are distinct, following only one (specific) duty. (03-148-19)
चातुराश्रम्ययुक्तेन कर्मणा कालयोगिना। अकामफलसंयोगात्प्राप्नुवन्ति परां गतिम् ॥०३-१४८-२०॥
cāturāśramyayuktena karmaṇā kālayoginā। akāmaphalasaṃyogātprāpnuvanti parāṃ gatim ॥03-148-20॥
[चातुराश्रम्ययुक्तेन (cāturāśramyayuktena) - with (one) endowed with the four āśramas; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; कालयोगिना (kālayoginā) - with the union with time; अकामफलसंयोगात् (akāmaphalasaṃyogāt) - from lack of association with desired fruit; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - they attain; पराम् (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(By action, performed with one endowed with the four āśramas, with the union with time, from lack of association with desired fruit, they attain the supreme state.)
By action performed with observance of the four āśramas, at the proper time, and without attachment to the desired fruit, they attain the highest state. (03-148-20)
आत्मयोगसमायुक्तो धर्मोऽयं कृतलक्षणः। कृते युगे चतुष्पादश्चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य शाश्वतः ॥०३-१४८-२१॥
ātmayoga-samāyukto dharmo’yaṁ kṛta-lakṣaṇaḥ। kṛte yuge catuṣpādaś cāturvarṇyasya śāśvataḥ॥03-148-21॥
[आत्मयोगसमायुक्तः (ātmayoga-samāyuktaḥ) - endowed with self-union; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; अयम् (ayam) - this; कृतलक्षणः (kṛta-lakṣaṇaḥ) - characterized by (the age called) Kṛta; कृते (kṛte) - in Kṛta (Yuga); युगे (yuge) - in the age; चतुष्पादः (catuṣpādaḥ) - having four feet; चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य (cāturvarṇyasya) - of the fourfold-class system; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal;]
(Endowed with self-union, this dharma characterized by Kṛta (age), in the Kṛta Yuga is four-footed, of the fourfold (varṇa) system, eternal.)
This dharma, endowed with self-union and marked by the Kṛta age, is eternally established with its fourfold foundation in the Kṛta Yuga for the four varṇas. (03-148-21)
एतत्कृतयुगं नाम त्रैगुण्यपरिवर्जितम्। त्रेतामपि निबोध त्वं यस्मिन्सत्रं प्रवर्तते ॥०३-१४८-२२॥
etat kṛtayugaṃ nāma traiguṇya-parivarjitam। tretām api nibodha tvaṃ yasmin satraṃ pravartate॥03-148-22॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; कृत-युगं (kṛta-yugam) - Kṛta Yuga; नाम (nāma) - by name; त्रैगुण्य-परिवर्जितम् (traiguṇya-parivarjitam) - devoid of the three guṇas; त्रेताम् (tretām) - Tretā (Yuga, the second age); अपि (api) - also; निबोध (nibodha) - know; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; सत्रं (satraṃ) - sacrifice; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - is performed;]
(This is known as the Kṛta Yuga, devoid of the three guṇas. Also know the Tretā, in which a sacrifice is performed.)
This is called the Kṛta Yuga, free from the three guṇas. Know also the Tretā Yuga, in which the sacrificial ritual is performed. (03-148-22)
पादेन ह्रसते धर्मो रक्ततां याति चाच्युतः। सत्यप्रवृत्ताश्च नराः क्रियाधर्मपरायणाः ॥०३-१४८-२३॥
pādena hrasate dharmo raktatāṃ yāti cācyutaḥ। satyapravṛtṭāś ca narāḥ kriyādharmaparāyaṇāḥ॥03-148-23॥
[पादेन (pādena) - by one fourth; by a quarter; ह्रसते (hrasate) - diminishes; grows less; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; righteousness; रक्तताम् (raktatām) - redness; state of being red; याति (yāti) - attains; reaches; च (ca) - and; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta; (a name for Vishnu, here as a proper noun); सत्यप्रवृत्ताः (satyapravṛttāḥ) - engaged in truth; devoted to truth; च (ca) - and; नराः (narāḥ) - men; people; क्रियाधर्मपरायणाः (kriyādharmaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to the performance of dharma; steadfast in ritual and duty;]
(By a quarter dharma diminishes, Acyuta attains redness, and men engaged in truth are steadfast in the performance of ritual and duty.)
Dharma decreases by a quarter, Acyuta (Vishnu) becomes tinged with redness, and people remain steadfast in practicing truth and performing their duties. (03-148-23)
ततो यज्ञाः प्रवर्तन्ते धर्माश्च विविधाः क्रियाः। त्रेतायां भावसङ्कल्पाः क्रियादानफलोदयाः ॥०३-१४८-२४॥
tato yajñāḥ pravartante dharmāś ca vividhāḥ kriyāḥ। tretāyāṃ bhāvasaṅkalpāḥ kriyādānaphalodayāḥ॥03-148-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; after that; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - arise; commence; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - rites; laws; duties; च (ca) - and; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; manifold; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - actions; ceremonies; त्रेतायाम् (tretāyām) - in (the age of) Tretā (Yuga); भावसङ्कल्पाः (bhāvasaṅkalpāḥ) - mental resolutions; determinations of intent; क्रिया (kriyā) - action; दान (dāna) - gift; फल (phala) - fruit; result; उदयाः (udayāḥ) - arise; originate;]
(From then sacrifices arise, and duties and various actions. In the Tretā Yuga, mental resolutions, and action, giving, fruit, arise.)
From then sacrifices began, as well as duties and various rituals. In the Tretā Yuga, mental resolutions, actions, gifts, and the arising of their results came into being. (03-148-24)
प्रचलन्ति न वै धर्मात्तपोदानपरायणाः। स्वधर्मस्थाः क्रियावन्तो जनास्त्रेतायुगेऽभवन् ॥०३-१४८-२५॥
pracalanti na vai dharmāt tapo-dāna-parāyaṇāḥ। sva-dharma-sthāḥ kriyā-vanto janās tretā-yuge'bhavan ॥03-148-25॥
[प्रचलन्ति (pracalanti) - move about; act; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from (their own) dharma; तपः-दान-परायणाः (tapo-dāna-parāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to austerity and gifts; स्वधर्मस्थाः (sva-dharma-sthāḥ) - established in their own dharma; क्रियावन्तः (kriyā-vantaḥ) - possessed of (ritual) actions; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; त्रेतायुगे (tretā-yuge) - in the Tretā Yuga; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Move about not indeed from dharma, devoted to austerity and gifts; established in their own dharma, possessed of actions, people in the Tretā Yuga became.)
People devoted to austerity and gifts, firmly established in their own dharma and engaged in actions, did not stray from dharma; such people existed in the Tretā Yuga. (03-148-25)
द्वापरेऽपि युगे धर्मो द्विभागोनः प्रवर्तते। विष्णुर्वै पीततां याति चतुर्धा वेद एव च ॥०३-१४८-२६॥
dvāpare'pi yuge dharmo dvibhāgo naḥ pravartate। viṣṇur vai pītatāṃ yāti caturdhā veda eva ca॥03-148-26॥
[द्वापरेऽपि (dvāpare'pi) - in the Dvāpara (age) also; युगे (yuge) - in the age; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; द्विभागः (dvibhāgaḥ) - two parts; अनः (naḥ) - of us; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - proceeds; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; वै (vai) - indeed; पीतताम् (pītatām) - yellow color; याति (yāti) - assumes; चतुर्धा (caturdhā) - fourfold; वेदः (vedaḥ) - Veda; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(In the Dvāpara age also, righteousness proceeds in two parts of us. Viṣṇu indeed assumes yellow color, the Veda indeed (becomes) fourfold and (so).)
In the Dvāpara age as well, righteousness prevails in two parts. Viṣṇu assumes a yellow hue, and the Veda becomes fourfold. (03-148-26)
ततोऽन्ये च चतुर्वेदास्त्रिवेदाश्च तथापरे। द्विवेदाश्चैकवेदाश्चाप्यनृचश्च तथापरे ॥०३-१४८-२७॥
tato'nye ca caturvedās trivedāś ca tathāpare। dvivedāś caikavedāś cāpy anṛcaś ca tathāpare ॥03-148-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; चतुर्वेदाः (caturvedāḥ) - knowers of the four Vedas; त्रिवेदाः (trivedāḥ) - knowers of the three Vedas; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so, likewise; अपरे (apare) - others; द्विवेदाः (dvivedāḥ) - knowers of two Vedas; च (ca) - and; एकवेदाः (ekavedāḥ) - knowers of one Veda; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनृचः (anṛcaḥ) - those not reciters of Ṛgveda (not versed in hymns); च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so, likewise; अपरे (apare) - others;]
(Thereafter others and (those who are) knowers of the four Vedas, and knowers of the three Vedas, so likewise others; knowers of two Vedas and knowers of one Veda and also those not reciters of hymns and so likewise others.)
Thereafter, there were others—the knowers of the four Vedas, the knowers of the three Vedas, likewise others; the knowers of two Vedas, the knowers of one Veda, and also those not versed in hymns, and still others. (03-148-27)
एवं शास्त्रेषु भिन्नेषु बहुधा नीयते क्रिया। तपोदानप्रवृत्ता च राजसी भवति प्रजा ॥०३-१४८-२८॥
evaṃ śāstreṣu bhinneṣu bahudhā nīyate kriyā। tapo-dāna-pravṛttā ca rājasī bhavati prajā ॥03-148-28॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शास्त्रेषु (śāstreṣu) - in the scriptures; भिन्नेषु (bhinneṣu) - in the differing (ones); बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; नीयते (nīyate) - is led; क्रिया (kriyā) - action; तपोदानप्रवृत्ता (tapo-dāna-pravṛttā) - engaged in penance and giving; च (ca) - and; राजसी (rājasī) - of a rajasic (nature); भवति (bhavati) - becomes; प्रजा (prajā) - the people;]
(Thus, in the scriptures, in the differing (ones), in many ways, action is led. Engaged in penance and giving, and of a rajasic (nature), becomes the people.)
Thus, in the various differing scriptures, action is directed in many ways. The people engaged in penance and gifts also become rajasic in nature. (03-148-28)
एकवेदस्य चाज्ञानाद्वेदास्ते बहवः कृताः। सत्यस्य चेह विभ्रंशात्सत्ये कश्चिदवस्थितः ॥०३-१४८-२९॥
ekavedasya cājñānād vedās te bahavaḥ kṛtāḥ। satyasya ceha vibhraṃśāt satye kaścid avasthitaḥ ॥03-148-29॥
[एकवेदस्य (ekavedasya) - of the one Veda; च (ca) - and; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; ते (te) - they; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; सत्यस्य (satyasya) - of truth; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; विभ्रंशात् (vibhraṃśāt) - from loss; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some(one); अवस्थितः (avasthitaḥ) - remains;]
(Of the one Veda, and from ignorance, the Vedas, they, many, were made. Of truth, and here, from loss, in truth, someone remains.)
From ignorance regarding the one Veda, many Vedas were made. With the loss of truth here, only someone abides in truth. (03-148-29)
सत्यात्प्रच्यवमानानां व्याधयो बहवोऽभवन्। कामाश्चोपद्रवाश्चैव तदा दैवतकारिताः ॥०३-१४८-३०॥
satyāt pracyavamānānāṃ vyādhayo bahavo'bhavan। kāmāś copadravāś caiva tadā daivatakāritāḥ॥03-148-30॥
[सत्यात् (satyāt) - from truth; प्रच्यवमानानां (pracyavamānānāṃ) - of those falling away; व्याधयः (vyādhayaḥ) - diseases; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; अभवन् (abhavan) - arose; कामाः (kāmāḥ) - desires; च (ca) - and; उपद्रवाः (upadravāḥ) - afflictions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; दैवतकारिताः (daivatakāritāḥ) - caused by the deities;]
(From truth those falling away, diseases many arose. Desires and afflictions indeed then (were) caused by the deities.)
For those who fell away from truth, many diseases arose. Desires and afflictions, too, then were caused by the deities. (03-148-30)
यैरर्द्यमानाः सुभृशं तपस्तप्यन्ति मानवाः। कामकामाः स्वर्गकामा यज्ञांस्तन्वन्ति चापरे ॥०३-१४८-३१॥
yairardyamānāḥ subhṛśaṃ tapastapyanti mānavāḥ। kāmakāmāḥ svargakāmā yajñāṃstanvanti cāpare॥03-148-31॥
[यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; अर्द्यमानाः (ardyamānāḥ) - being afflicted; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - very much; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्यन्ति (tapyanti) - practice; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; कामकामाः (kāmakāmāḥ) - desiring desires; स्वर्गकामा (svargakāmā) - desiring heaven; यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; तन्वन्ति (tanvanti) - perform; च (ca) - and; अपरे (apare) - others;]
(By whom, being afflicted, very much austerity humans practice, desiring desires, desiring heaven, sacrifices perform and others.)
Those by whom, being greatly afflicted, humans perform severe austerities, and others, desiring desires or heaven, perform sacrifices. (03-148-31)
एवं द्वापरमासाद्य प्रजाः क्षीयन्त्यधर्मतः। पादेनैकेन कौन्तेय धर्मः कलियुगे स्थितः ॥०३-१४८-३२॥
evaṃ dvāparam āsādya prajāḥ kṣīyanty adharmataḥ। pādenaikena kaunteya dharmaḥ kali-yuge sthitaḥ ॥03-148-32॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; द्वापरम् (dvāparam) - the Dvāpara (age); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - people; क्षीयन्ति (kṣīyanti) - decline; अधर्मतः (adharmataḥ) - due to unrighteousness; पादेन (pādena) - by (a) foot; एकेन (ekena) - one; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; कलियुगे (kali-yuge) - in the Kali age; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remains;]
(Thus, having reached the Dvāpara age, people decline due to unrighteousness. O son of Kuntī, in the Kali age, righteousness remains by only one foot.)

तामसं युगमासाद्य कृष्णो भवति केशवः। वेदाचाराः प्रशाम्यन्ति धर्मयज्ञक्रियास्तथा ॥०३-१४८-३३॥
tāmansaṃ yugam-āsādya kṛṣṇo bhavati keśavaḥ। vedācārāḥ praśāmyanti dharma-yajña-kriyās-tathā॥03-148-33॥
[तामसं (tāmansaṃ) - the dark (tamas) one; darkness; युगम् (yugam) - age; era; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; attaining; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; the dark (one); भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava (a name of Viṣṇu/Kṛṣṇa); वेदाचाराः (vedācārāḥ) - Vedic practices; प्रशाम्यन्ति (praśāmyanti) - become appeased; are subdued; धर्मयज्ञक्रियाः (dharma-yajña-kriyāḥ) - rites of dharma and sacrifice; तथा (tathā) - likewise; also;]
(Having reached the dark age, Keśava becomes Kṛṣṇa; Vedic practices are subdued, rites of dharma and sacrifice likewise.)
When the age of darkness arrives, Keśava takes the form of Kṛṣṇa; Vedic conduct and the practices of dharma and sacrifice decline also. (03-148-33)
ईतयो व्याधयस्तन्द्री दोषाः क्रोधादयस्तथा। उपद्रवाश्च वर्तन्ते आधयो व्याधयस्तथा ॥०३-१४८-३४॥
ītayo vyādhayas tandrī doṣāḥ krodhādayas tathā। upadravāś ca vartante ādhayo vyādhayas tathā॥03-148-34॥
[ईतयः (ītayaḥ) - distresses; व्याधयः (vyādhayaḥ) - diseases; तन्द्री (tandrī) - sloth; दोषाः (doṣāḥ) - faults; क्रोधादयः (krodhādayaḥ) - anger and the like; तथा (tathā) - similarly; उपद्रवाः (upadravāḥ) - disturbances; च (ca) - and; वर्तन्ते (vartante) - occur; आधयः (ādhayaḥ) - afflictions; व्याधयः (vyādhayaḥ) - diseases; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Distresses, diseases, sloth, faults, anger and the like likewise, disturbances and occur, afflictions, diseases likewise.)

युगेष्वावर्तमानेषु धर्मो व्यावर्तते पुनः। धर्मे व्यावर्तमाने तु लोको व्यावर्तते पुनः ॥०३-१४८-३५॥
yugeṣv āvartamāneṣu dharmo vyāvartate punaḥ। dharme vyāvartamāne tu loko vyāvartate punaḥ ॥03-148-35॥
[युगेषु (yugeṣu) - in the ages (yugas); आवर्तमानेषु (āvartamāneṣu) - while revolving; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; व्यावर्तते (vyāvartate) - turns away; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; धर्मे (dharme) - when dharma; व्यावर्तमाने (vyāvartamāne) - is turning away; तु (tu) - but; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; व्यावर्तते (vyāvartate) - turns away; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(In the ages as they revolve, dharma turns away again. But when dharma is turning away, the world turns away again.)
As the ages revolve, dharma declines again and again. But when dharma declines, the world, too, withdraws again. (03-148-35)
लोके क्षीणे क्षयं यान्ति भावा लोकप्रवर्तकाः। युगक्षयकृता धर्माः प्रार्थनानि विकुर्वते ॥०३-१४८-३६॥
loke kṣīṇe kṣayaṃ yānti bhāvā lokapravartakāḥ। yugakṣayakṛtā dharmāḥ prārthanāni vikurvate॥03-148-36॥
[लोके (loke) - in the world; क्षीणे (kṣīṇe) - when diminished; क्षयं (kṣayam) - to destruction; यान्ति (yānti) - go; भावा (bhāvāḥ) - qualities; लोकप्रवर्तकाः (lokapravartakāḥ) - those causing the functioning of the world; युगक्षयकृता (yugakṣayakṛtāḥ) - caused by the end of an age; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - righteousnesses; प्रार्थनानि (prārthanāni) - requests; विकुर्वते (vikurvate) - alter;]
(In the world, when diminished, to destruction go the qualities causing the functioning of the world. Righteousnesses caused by the end of an age alter requests.)
When the world declines, the qualities that sustain it are destroyed. The righteous codes created at the end of an age distort requests. (03-148-36)
एतत्कलियुगं नाम अचिराद्यत्प्रवर्तते। युगानुवर्तनं त्वेतत्कुर्वन्ति चिरजीविनः ॥०३-१४८-३७॥
etat-kali-yugaṃ nāma acirād yat pravartate। yuga-anuvartanaṃ tu etat kurvanti cirajīvinaḥ॥03-148-37॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; कलियुगं (kali-yugaṃ) - Kali-yuga; नाम (nāma) - named; अचिरात् (acirāt) - shortly; यत् (yat) - which; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - commences; युग-अनुवर्तनं (yuga-anuvartanaṃ) - following the yugas; तु (tu) - but; एतत् (etat) - this; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - perform; चिरजीविनः (cirajīvinaḥ) - the long-lived ones;]
(This Kali-yuga named, shortly which commences. The following of the yugas but this perform the long-lived ones.)
This age named Kali-yuga, which will commence shortly; the long-lived beings perform the succession of the yugas. (3-148-37)
यच्च ते मत्परिज्ञाने कौतूहलमरिंदम। अनर्थकेषु को भावः पुरुषस्य विजानतः ॥०३-१४८-३८॥
yacca te matparijñāne kautūhalam ariṃdama। anarthakeṣu kaḥ bhāvaḥ puruṣasya vijānataḥ ॥03-148-38॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; मत्परिज्ञाने (matparijñāne) - in comprehension of me; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - eagerness; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; अनर्थकेषु (anarthakeṣu) - in unfavorable (worthless) things; कः (kaḥ) - what; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - state; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a person; विजानतः (vijānataḥ) - knowing;]
(And which your eagerness (exists) in comprehension of me, O subduer of enemies? In unfavorable things, what is the state of a person who knows?)
O subduer of enemies, that eagerness of yours for understanding me—what significance does unfavorable things hold for a person of knowledge? (03-148-38)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि। युगसङ्ख्यां महाबाहो स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि गम्यताम् ॥०३-१४८-३९॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātam yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi. yuga-saṅkhyāṃ mahā-bāho svasti prāpnuhu gamyatām ॥03-148-39॥
