Vaiśampāyana said.
ततस्तान्परिविश्वस्तान्वसतस्तत्र पाण्डवान्। गतेषु तेषु रक्षःसु भीमसेनात्मजेऽपि च ॥०३-१५४-१॥
tatastān pariviśvastān vasatas tatra pāṇḍavān। gateṣu teṣu rakṣaḥsu bhīmasenātmaje'pi ca ॥03-154-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - those (them; accusative plural masculine); परिविश्वस्तान् (pariviśvastān) - fully trusting; confident; वसत: (vasataḥ) - living; dwelling; तत्र (tatra) - there; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; गतेषु (gateṣu) - when departed; gone; तेषु (teṣu) - those (guards; locative plural masculine); रक्षःसु (rakṣaḥsu) - among the guards; in the protectors; भीमसेनात्मजे (bhīmasenātmaje) - in Bhīmasena's son; अपि (api) - also; even; च (ca) - and;]
(Then those fully trusting Pāṇḍavas dwelling there, when those guards had gone, even in Bhīmasena's son and also.)
Then, after the guards had departed, the Pāṇḍavas who were confidently dwelling there, as well as Bhīmasena's son, also remained. (03-154-1)
रहितान्भीमसेनेन कदाचित्तान्यदृच्छया। जहार धर्मराजानं यमौ कृष्णां च राक्षसः ॥०३-१५४-२॥
rahitān bhīmasenena kadācit tān yadṛcchayā | jahāra dharmarājānam yamau kṛṣṇāṁ ca rākṣasaḥ ॥03-154-2॥

ब्राह्मणो मन्त्रकुशलः सर्वास्त्रेष्वस्त्रवित्तमः। इति ब्रुवन्पाण्डवेयान्पर्युपास्ते स्म नित्यदा ॥०३-१५४-३॥
brāhmaṇo mantrakuśalaḥ sarvāstreṣv astravittamaḥ। iti bruvan pāṇḍaveyān paryupāste sma nityadā ॥03-154-3॥

परीक्षमाणः पार्थानां कलापानि धनूंषि च। अन्तरं समभिप्रेप्सुर्नाम्ना ख्यातो जटासुरः ॥०३-१५४-४॥

स भीमसेने निष्क्रान्ते मृगयार्थमरिंदमे। अन्यद्रूपं समास्थाय विकृतं भैरवं महत् ॥०३-१५४-५॥
sa bhīmasene niṣkrānte mṛgayārtham ariṃdame। anyad rūpaṃ samāsthāya vikṛtaṃ bhairavaṃ mahat ॥03-154-5॥

सहदेवस्तु यत्नेन ततोऽपक्रम्य पाण्डवः। आक्रन्दद्भीमसेनं वै येन यातो महाबलः ॥०३-१५४-७॥
sahadevastu yatnena tato'pakramya pāṇḍavaḥ। ākrandadbhīmasenaṃ vai yena yāto mahābalaḥ॥03-154-7॥

(But Sahadeva, the Pāṇḍava, with effort then having withdrawn, cried out to Bhīmasena, indeed, by whom the powerful one had gone.)
But Sahadeva, the Pāṇḍava, with effort withdrew from there and called out to Bhīmasena, by whom the mighty one had gone. (03-154-7)
तमब्रवीद्धर्मराजो ह्रियमाणो युधिष्ठिरः। धर्मस्ते हीयते मूढ न चैनं समवेक्षसे ॥०३-१५४-८॥
tam abravīd dharmarājo hriyamāṇo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dharmas te hīyate mūḍha na ca enaṃ samavekṣase॥03-154-8॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) spoke; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - King of Dharma; ह्रियमाणः (hriyamāṇaḥ) - being taken away; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; ते (te) - your; हीयते (hīyate) - is diminished; मूढ (mūḍha) - O deluded one; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; समवेक्षसे (samavekṣase) - you perceive;]
(Him spoke King of Dharma, being taken away, Yudhishthira. Dharma your is diminished, O deluded one, not and him you perceive.)
As he was being taken away, Yudhishthira, the King of Dharma, spoke to him: "Your dharma is being diminished, O deluded one, and you do not perceive it." (03-154-8)
येऽन्ये केचिन्मनुष्येषु तिर्यग्योनिगता अपि। गन्धर्वयक्षरक्षांसि वयांसि पशवस्तथा ॥ मनुष्यानुपजीवन्ति ततस्त्वमुपजीवसि ॥०३-१५४-९॥
ye 'anye kecin manuṣyeṣu tiryag-yonigatā api। gandharva-yakṣa-rakṣāṃsi vayāṃsi paśavas tathā ॥ manuṣyān upajīvanti tatas tvam upajīvasi ॥03-154-9॥
[ये (ye) - those; अन्ये (anye) - other; केचित् (kecit) - some; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among humans; तिर्यग्योनिगता (tiryag-yonigatā) - born in animal species; अपि (api) - also; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - celestial musician; यक्ष (yakṣa) - yakṣa; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - rākṣasas; वयांसि (vayāṃsi) - birds; पशवः (paśavaḥ) - animals; तथा (tathā) - likewise; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - humans; अनुपजीवन्ति (anupajīvanti) - subsist upon; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उपजीवसि (upajīvasi) - subsist upon;]
(Those others, some among humans, even those born in animal species, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, birds, animals likewise, subsist upon humans; therefore, you subsist upon (them).)
Some others among humans, as well as those born in animal species—gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, birds, and animals—also subsist upon humans; thus, you subsist upon them. (3-154-9)
समृद्ध्या ह्यस्य लोकस्य लोको युष्माकमृध्यते। इमं च लोकं शोचन्तमनुशोचन्ति देवताः ॥ पूज्यमानाश्च वर्धन्ते हव्यकव्यैर्यथाविधि ॥०३-१५४-१०॥
samṛddhyā hy asya lokasya loko yuṣmākam ṛdhyate। imaṃ ca lokaṃ śocantam anuśocanti devatāḥ॥ pūjyamānāś ca vardhante havyakavyair yathāvidhi॥03-154-10॥
[समृद्ध्या (samṛddhyā) - by prosperity; by abundance; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; ऋध्यते (ṛdhyate) - prospers; इमं (imaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; शोचन्तम् (śocantam) - grieving; अनुशोचन्ति (anuśocanti) - mourn after; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; पूज्यमानाः (pūjyamānāḥ) - being worshipped; च (ca) - and; वर्धन्ते (vardhante) - increase; हव्यकव्यैः (havyakavyaiḥ) - by offerings and oblations; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule;]
(By prosperity indeed of this world, your world prospers. And this world, grieving, the deities mourn after. And being worshipped, they increase by offerings and oblations according to rule. (03-154-10))
Truly, through the prosperity of this world, your world prospers. And when this world is suffering, the deities lament after it. When worshipped with proper oblations and offerings, the deities are nourished and grow. (03-154-10)
वयं राष्ट्रस्य गोप्तारो रक्षितारश्च राक्षस। राष्ट्रस्यारक्ष्यमाणस्य कुतो भूतिः कुतः सुखम् ॥०३-१५४-११॥
vayaṁ rāṣṭrasya goptāro rakṣitāraś ca rākṣasa। rāṣṭrasya arakṣyamāṇasya kuto bhūtiḥ kutaḥ sukham ॥03-154-11॥
[वयं (vayam) - we; राष्ट्रस्य (rāṣṭrasya) - of the nation; गोप्तारो (goptāraḥ) - protectors; रक्षितारश्च (rakṣitāraś ca) - and (also) guardians; राक्षस (rākṣasa) - O Rākṣasa; राष्ट्रस्य (rāṣṭrasya) - of the nation; अरक्ष्यमाणस्य (arakṣyamāṇasya) - not being protected; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; भूतिः (bhūtiḥ) - prosperity; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(We of the nation protectors and guardians, O Rākṣasa. Of the nation not being protected, from where prosperity, from where happiness?)
We are the nation's protectors and guardians, O Rākṣasa. If the nation is not protected, how can there be prosperity, how can there be happiness? (03-154-11)
न च राजावमन्तव्यो रक्षसा जात्वनागसि। अणुरप्यपचारश्च नास्त्यस्माकं नराशन ॥०३-१५४-१२॥
na ca rājā'vamantavyo rakṣasā jātvanāgasi. aṇur apy apacāraś ca nāsty asmākaṃ narāśana ॥03-154-12॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - the king; अवमन्तव्यः (avamantavyaḥ) - should be despised; रक्षसा (rakṣasā) - by you, O Rākṣasa; जातु (jātu) - at any time; अनागसि (anāgasi) - in one who is innocent; अणुः अपि (aṇuḥ api) - even the slightest; अपचारः च (apacāraḥ ca) - offense also; न अस्ति (na asti) - does not exist; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - with us; नराशन (narāśana) - O man-eater (Rākṣasa);]
(Not and the king should be despised by you, O Rākṣasa, at any time in one who is innocent. Even the slightest offense also does not exist with us, O man-eater.)

द्रोग्धव्यं न च मित्रेषु न विश्वस्तेषु कर्हिचित्। येषां चान्नानि भुञ्जीत यत्र च स्यात्प्रतिश्रयः ॥०३-१५४-१३॥
drogdhavyaṃ na ca mitreṣu na viśvastēṣu karhicit। yeṣāṃ cānnāni bhuñjīta yatra ca syāt pratiśrayaḥ॥03-154-13॥
[द्रोग्धव्यं (drogdhavyaṃ) - should be harmed; (should be deceived; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मित्रेषु (mitreṣu) - among friends; न (na) - not; विश्वस्तेषु (viśvastēṣu) - among the trusted; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever; (at any time; येषां (yeṣāṃ) - whose; च (ca) - and; अन्नानि (annāni) - food; भुञ्जीत (bhuñjīta) - one eats; यत्र (yatra) - where; च (ca) - and; स्यात् (syāt) - there is; प्रतिश्रयः (pratiśrayaḥ) - shelter;]
(Should not be harmed and among friends, nor ever among the trusted; whose and food one eats, where and there is shelter.)
One must not harm either friends or those who are trusted at any time—especially those whose food one eats and where one finds shelter. (03-154-13)
स त्वं प्रतिश्रयेऽस्माकं पूज्यमानः सुखोषितः। भुक्त्वा चान्नानि दुष्प्रज्ञ कथमस्माञ्जिहीर्षसि ॥०३-१५४-१४॥
sa tvaṃ pratiśraye'smākaṃ pūjyamānaḥ sukhoṣitaḥ। bhuktvā cānnāni duṣprajña katham asmāñ jihīrṣasi ॥03-154-14॥
[स (sa) - he; that; but; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रतिश्रये (pratiśraye) - in the refuge; in the shelter; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; our; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; being worshipped; सुखोषितः (sukhoṣitaḥ) - having dwelt comfortably; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; च (ca) - and; अन्नानि (annāni) - foods; grains; दुष्प्रज्ञ (duṣprajña) - of bad understanding; foolish; कथम् (katham) - how; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; जिहीर्षसि (jihīrṣasi) - desire to abandon; wish to leave;]
(He you, in the shelter of us, being honored, having dwelt comfortably, having eaten foods, and, bad understanding, how us you desire to abandon?)
But you, having been honored and comfortably housed under our protection, and after partaking of our food, foolish one, how do you wish to abandon us? (03-154-14)
एवमेव वृथाचारो वृथावृद्धो वृथामतिः। वृथामरणमर्हस्त्वं वृथाद्य न भविष्यसि ॥०३-१५४-१५॥
evameva vṛthācāro vṛthāvṛddho vṛthāmatiḥ। vṛthāmaraṇamarhastvaṃ vṛthādya na bhaviṣyasi॥03-154-15॥
[एवमेव (evam eva) - just so; only thus; वृथाचारः (vṛthācāraḥ) - of vain conduct; futile in behaviour; वृथावृद्धः (vṛthāvṛddhaḥ) - vainly grown old; aged in vain; वृथामतिः (vṛthāmatiḥ) - of vain intellect; with a wasted mind; वृथामरणम् (vṛthāmaraṇam) - vain death; wasted death; अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy; deserving; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वृथाद्य (vṛthā adya) - in vain today; न (na) - not; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be;]
(Just so, of vain conduct, vainly grown old, with a vain intellect; worthy of a vain death are you; in vain today you will not be.)
Just so, you are of futile conduct, have grown old in vain, possess a wasted intellect, and are deserving of a worthless death; from today, you will not be in vain. (03-154-15)
अथ चेद्दुष्टबुद्धिस्त्वं सर्वैर्धर्मैर्विवर्जितः। प्रदाय शस्त्राण्यस्माकं युद्धेन द्रौपदीं हर ॥०३-१५४-१६॥
atha ced duṣṭabuddhis tvaṃ sarvair dharmair vivarjitaḥ। pradāya śastrāṇy asmākaṃ yuddhena draupadīṃ hara ॥03-154-16॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; चेत् (cet) - if; दुष्टबुद्धि (duṣṭabuddhi) - having corrupt mind; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; धर्मैः (dharmaiḥ) - virtues; dharmas; विवर्जितः (vivarjitaḥ) - devoid of; abandoned; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having surrendered; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; युद्धेन (yuddhena) - by battle; by fighting; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī; हर (hara) - seize; take;]
(Now if you, having a corrupt mind, devoid of all virtues, having surrendered our weapons, by battle, seize Draupadī.)
Now, if you, being of corrupt mind and devoid of all virtues, surrender our weapons and seize Draupadī by fighting, (03-154-16)
अथ चेत्त्वमविज्ञाय इदं कर्म करिष्यसि। अधर्मं चाप्यकीर्तिं च लोके प्राप्स्यसि केवलम् ॥०३-१५४-१७॥
atha cettvam avijñāya idaṃ karma kariṣyasi। adharmaṃ cāpyakīrtiṃ ca loke prāpsyasi kevalam ॥03-154-17॥
[अथ (atha) - then; चेत् (cet) - if; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अविज्ञाय (avijñāya) - without understanding; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कर्म (karma) - action; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; अधर्मं (adharmaṃ) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अकीर्तिं (akīrtiṃ) - disrepute; च (ca) - and; लोके (loke) - in the world; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will attain; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(Then if you, without understanding, will do this action, unrighteousness and also disrepute in the world you will attain only.)
If you do this action without understanding, then you will attain only unrighteousness and disrepute in the world. (03-154-17)
एतामद्य परामृश्य स्त्रियं राक्षस मानुषीम्। विषमेतत्समालोड्य कुम्भेन प्राशितं त्वया ॥०३-१५४-१८॥
etām adya parāmṛśya striyaṃ rākṣasa mānuṣīm। viṣam etat samāloḍya kumbhena prāśitaṃ tvayā ॥03-154-18॥
[एताम् (etām) - this (feminine accusative singular); अद्य (adya) - today; परामृश्य (parāmṛśya) - having touched; स्त्रियं (striyaṃ) - woman (accusative singular); राक्षस (rākṣasa) - O rākṣasa (addressing a demon); मानुषीम् (mānuṣīm) - human (woman, accusative singular); विषम् (viṣam) - poison (accusative singular); एतत् (etat) - this; समालोड्य (samāloḍya) - having mixed well; कुम्भेन (kumbhena) - with the pot; प्राशितं (prāśitaṃ) - eaten, drunk, consumed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(This today, having touched, woman, O rākṣasa, human; poison this having mixed well with the pot, consumed by you.)
O rākṣasa, having touched this human woman today, you have consumed this poison, well mixed in the pot. (03-154-18)
ततो युधिष्ठिरस्तस्य भारिकः समपद्यत। स तु भाराभिभूतात्मा न तथा शीघ्रगोऽभवत् ॥०३-१५४-१९॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiras tasya bhārikaḥ samapadyata। sa tu bhārābhibhūtātmā na tathā śīghrago 'bhavat॥03-154-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तस्य (tasya) - of him; भारिकः (bhārikaḥ) - bearer of the burden; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; भाराभिभूतात्मा (bhārābhibhūtātmā) - with self overpowered by burden; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; शीघ्रगः (śīghragaḥ) - quick-moving; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Then Yudhiṣṭhira became his bearer of the burden. But he, with self overpowered by burden, did not become so quick-moving.)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira became his burden-bearer. But, being weighed down by the burden, he was not able to move as quickly. (03-154-19)
अथाब्रवीद्द्रौपदीं च नकुलं च युधिष्ठिरः। मा भैष्ट राक्षसान्मूढाद्गतिरस्य मया हृता ॥०३-१५४-२०॥
athābravīddraupadīṃ ca nakulaṃ ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। mā bhaiṣṭa rākṣasānmūḍhādgatir asya mayā hṛtā॥03-154-20॥

(Then Yudhiṣṭhira spoke to Draupadī and to Nakula: "Do not fear the rākṣasas; from the deluded, the path of him has been taken away by me." (03-154-20))
Then Yudhiṣṭhira said to Draupadī and Nakula: "Do not fear the rākṣasas; I have taken away this deluded being's path." (03-154-20)
नातिदूरे महाबाहुर्भविता पवनात्मजः। अस्मिन्मुहूर्ते सम्प्राप्ते न भविष्यति राक्षसः ॥०३-१५४-२१॥
nātidūre mahābāhur bhavitā pavanātmajaḥ। asmin muhūrte samprāpte na bhaviṣyati rākṣasaḥ॥03-154-21॥
[नातिदूरे (nātidūre) - not very far; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - of mighty arms; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; पवनात्मजः (pavanātmajaḥ) - the son of the wind; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; मुहूर्ते (muhūrte) - moment; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - demon;]
(Not very far, the son of the wind, of mighty arms, will be. In this moment having arrived, not will be the demon.)
The son of the wind, who possesses mighty arms, will not be far off. When this very moment has arrived, the demon will cease to exist. (03-154-21)
सहदेवस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसं मूढचेतसम्। उवाच वचनं राजन्कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०३-१५४-२२॥
sahadevastu taṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaṃ mūḍhacetāsam। uvāca vacanaṃ rājan kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥03-154-22॥

(Sahadeva but him having seen the demon whose mind is deluded said word O king (to) Kunti's son Yudhishthira.)
But Sahadeva, seeing that demon whose mind was deluded, spoke words to Kunti's son, Yudhishthira, O king. (03-154-22)
राजन्किं नाम तत्कृत्यं क्षत्रियस्यास्त्यतोऽधिकम्। यद्युद्धेऽभिमुखः प्राणांस्त्यजेच्छत्रूञ्जयेत वा ॥०३-१५४-२३॥
rājan kiṁ nāma tat kṛtyaṁ kṣatriyasya asti ataḥ adhikam। yat yuddhe abhimukhaḥ prāṇān tyajet śatrūn jayet vā ॥03-154-23॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; किं (kiṁ) - what; नाम (nāma) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; कृत्यं (kṛtyam) - deed; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a kṣatriya; अस्ति (asti) - is; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; अधिकम् (adhikam) - greater; यत् (yat) - if; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; अभिमुखः (abhimukhaḥ) - while facing; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life(s); त्यजेत् (tyajet) - were to give up; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; जयेत् (jayet) - were to conquer; वा (vā) - or;]
(O king, what indeed is that deed of a kṣatriya that is greater than this: if in battle, while facing (the enemy), he were to give up his life or conquer his enemies?)
O king, can there be any deed of a kṣatriya greater than this: facing the enemy in battle, to either lay down his life or to conquer his foes? (03-154-23)
एष चास्मान्वयं चैनं युध्यमानाः परन्तप। सूदयेम महाबाहो देशकालो ह्ययं नृप ॥०३-१५४-२४॥
eṣa cāsmānvayaṃ cainaṃ yudhyamānāḥ parantapa. sūdayema mahābāho deśakālo hyayaṃ nṛpa ॥03-154-24॥

(This and us, and we, him fighting, O scorcher of foes, we may destroy, O mighty-armed; time and place indeed this, O king.)
O mighty-armed, O king, this is the time and place for us; O scorcher of foes, if we fight, we may destroy him and his people. (03-154-24)
क्षत्रधर्मस्य सम्प्राप्तः कालः सत्यपराक्रम। जयन्तः पात्यमाना वा प्राप्तुमर्हाम सद्गतिम् ॥०३-१५४-२५॥
kṣatradharmasya samprāptaḥ kālaḥ satyaparākrama। jayantaḥ pātyamānā vā prāptumarhāma sad-gatim ॥03-154-25॥
[क्षत्रधर्मस्य (kṣatradharmasya) - of the kṣatriya duty; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - has arrived; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; सत्यपराक्रम (satyaparākrama) - O truly valiant one; जयन्तः (jayantaḥ) - conquering; पात्यमाना (pātyamānā) - falling (in battle); वा (vā) - or; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; अर्हाम (arhāma) - we are fit; सद्गतिम् (sad-gatim) - the good state (noble fate/liberation);]
(Of the kṣatriya duty, the time has arrived, O truly valiant one. Conquering or falling, we are fit to obtain the good state.)
O truly valiant one, the time for the kṣatriya's duty has come. Whether we conquer or fall in battle, we deserve to attain the noble state. (03-154-25)
राक्षसे जीवमानेऽद्य रविरस्तमियाद्यदि। नाहं ब्रूयां पुनर्जातु क्षत्रियोऽस्मीति भारत ॥०३-१५४-२६॥
rākṣase jīvamāne'dya ravirastamiyādyadi. nāhaṃ brūyāṃ punarjātu kṣatriyo'smīti bhārata ॥03-154-26॥
[राक्षसे (rākṣase) - while the demon lives; जीवमाने (jīvamāne) - is living; अद्य (adya) - today; रवि: (raviḥ) - the sun; अस्तमियात् (astamiyāt) - should set; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - would say; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; जातु (jātu) - ever; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; अस्मि (asmi) - (I) am; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(While the demon is living today, if the sun should set, I would never again say "I am a warrior," O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, if today, while the demon is still alive, the sun should set, I would never again claim, "I am a warrior." (3-154-26)
भो भो राक्षस तिष्ठस्व सहदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवः। हत्वा वा मां नयस्वैनान्हतो वाद्येह स्वप्स्यसि ॥०३-१५४-२७॥
bho bho rākṣasa tiṣṭhasva sahadevo'smi pāṇḍavaḥ। hatvā vā māṁ nayasva enān hato vā adya iha svapsyasi॥03-154-27॥
[भो भो (bho bho) - O! O!; राक्षस (rākṣasa) - rākṣasa; demon; तिष्ठस्व (tiṣṭhasva) - stand; remain; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; अस्मि (asmi) - am; (I am); पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - a son of Pāṇḍu; (Pāṇḍava); हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; वा (vā) - or; माम् (mām) - me; नयस्व (nayasva) - lead; take; एतान् (enān) - these; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; slain; वा (vā) - or; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; स्वप्स्यसि (svapsyasi) - you will sleep;]
(O O rākṣasa, stand! Sahadeva am (I am), Pāṇḍava. Having killed or me, lead these (away), or (if) killed (you are), today here you will sleep.)
O O rākṣasa, stand! I am Sahadeva, a Pāṇḍava. Kill me and lead these away, or if killed, today here you will sleep. (03-154-27)
तथैव तस्मिन्ब्रुवति भीमसेनो यदृच्छया। प्रादृश्यत महाबाहुः सवज्र इव वासवः ॥०३-१५४-२८॥
tathaiva tasmin bruvati bhīmaseno yadṛcchayā। prādṛśyata mahābāhuḥ savajra iva vāsavaḥ ॥03-154-28॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - while he; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - was speaking; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; प्रादृश्यत (prādṛśyata) - became visible; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the strong-armed; सवज्र (savajra) - with the thunderbolt; इव (iva) - like; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra;]
(In the same manner, while he was speaking, Bhimasena, by chance, became visible, the strong-armed, like Indra with the thunderbolt.)
In the same way, as Bhimasena was speaking, by chance the strong-armed Indra, like one wielding the thunderbolt, appeared. (03-154-28)
सोऽपश्यद्भ्रातरौ तत्र द्रौपदीं च यशस्विनीम्। क्षितिस्थं सहदेवं च क्षिपन्तं राक्षसं तदा ॥०३-१५४-२९॥
so'paśyadbhrātarau tatra draupadīṃ ca yaśasvinīm। kṣitisthaṃ sahadevaṃ ca kṣipantaṃ rākṣasaṃ tadā॥03-154-29॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - the two brothers; तत्र (tatra) - there; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - illustrious; क्षितिस्थं (kṣitistham) - standing on the ground; सहदेवं (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; क्षिपन्तं (kṣipantam) - throwing; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - the rākṣasa (demon); तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He saw the two brothers there, and Draupadī, the illustrious, and Sahadeva standing on the ground, and the rākṣasa throwing (him), then.)
At that time, he saw his two brothers there, and the illustrious Draupadī, and Sahadeva standing on the ground, while the rākṣasa was hurling him. (03-154-29)
मार्गाच्च राक्षसं मूढं कालोपहतचेतसम्। भ्रमन्तं तत्र तत्रैव दैवेन विनिवारितम् ॥०३-१५४-३०॥
mārgāc ca rākṣasaṃ mūḍhaṃ kālopahata-cetasam। bhramantaṃ tatra tatraiva daivena vinivāritam ॥03-154-30॥
[मार्गात् (mārgāt) - from the path; च (ca) - and; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - rākṣasa; मूढं (mūḍham) - deluded; कालोपहतचेतसम् (kālopahata-cetasam) - whose mind was afflicted by (upahata) time (kāla); भ्रमन्तं (bhramantaṃ) - wandering; तत्र (tatra) - here; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - there itself; दैवेन (daivena) - by destiny; विनिवारितम् (vinivāritam) - prevented;]
(And from the path, the rākṣasa, deluded, whose mind was afflicted by time, wandering here, there itself, by destiny, was prevented.)
The rākṣasa, who was deluded and whose mind was confounded by time, was prevented by destiny from the path as he wandered about here and there. (03-154-30)
भ्रातॄंस्तान्ह्रियतो दृष्ट्वा द्रौपदीं च महाबलः। क्रोधमाहारयद्भीमो राक्षसं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१५४-३१॥
bhrātṝṃs tān hriyato dṛṣṭvā draupadīṃ ca mahābalaḥ। krodham āhārayad bhīmo rākṣasaṃ ca idam abravīt॥03-154-31॥
[भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers (accusative plural); तान् (tān) - those; ह्रियतः (hriyataḥ) - being carried off; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one; क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; आहारयत् (āhārayat) - brought forth; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma (nominative singular); राक्षसम् (rākṣasam) - to the Rākṣasa (demon); च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - these (words); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having seen those brothers being carried off and Draupadī, the mighty Bhīma brought forth anger and to the Rākṣasa thus spoke these words.)
Seeing his brothers and Draupadī being carried away, the mighty Bhīma became angry and addressed the Rākṣasa with these words. (03-154-31)
विज्ञातोऽसि मया पूर्वं चेष्टञ्शस्त्रपरीक्षणे। आस्था तु त्वयि मे नास्ति यतोऽसि न हतस्तदा ॥ ब्रह्मरूपप्रतिच्छन्नो न नो वदसि चाप्रियम् ॥०३-१५४-३२॥
vijñāto'si mayā pūrvaṃ ceṣṭañśastraparīkṣaṇe। āsthā tu tvayi me nāsti yato'si na hatastadā ॥ brahmarūpapraticchanno na no vadasi cāpriyam ॥03-154-32॥
[विज्ञातः (vijñātaḥ) - known; असि (asi) - you are; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; चेष्टन् (ceṣṭan) - acting; शस्त्रपरीक्षणे (śastraparīkṣaṇe) - in the test of weapons; आस्था (āsthā) - faith; तु (tu) - but; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; मे (me) - my; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; यतः (yataḥ) - since; असि (asi) - you are; न (na) - not; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; तदा (tadā) - then; ब्रह्मरूपप्रतिच्छन्नः (brahmarūpapraticchannaḥ) - hidden by Brahman-form; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - to us; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; च (ca) - and; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant;]
(Known you are by me previously, acting in the test of weapons. Faith but in you my is not, since you are not killed then. Hidden by Brahman-form, not to us you speak and unpleasant.)
I previously recognized you, acting during the trial of weapons. But I have no faith in you, since you were not killed then. Concealed by the form of Brahman, you do not tell us anything unpleasant. (03-154-32)
प्रियेषु चरमाणं त्वां न चैवाप्रियकारिणम्। अतिथिं ब्रह्मरूपं च कथं हन्यामनागसम् ॥ राक्षसं मन्यमानोऽपि यो हन्यान्नरकं व्रजेत् ॥०३-१५४-३३॥
priyeṣu caramāṇaṃ tvāṃ na caivāpriyakāriṇam। atithiṃ brahmarūpaṃ ca kathaṃ hanyāmanāgasam॥ rākṣasaṃ manyamāno'pi yo hanyānnarakaṃ vrajet॥03-154-33॥
[प्रियेषु (priyeṣu) - among dear ones; चरमाणम् (caramāṇam) - moving; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अप्रियकारिणम् (apriyakāriṇam) - not doing harm; अतिथिम् (atithim) - guest; ब्रह्मरूपम् (brahmarūpam) - having the form of Brahman; च (ca) - and; कथम् (katham) - how; हन्याम् (hanyām) - could I kill; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - innocent; राक्षसम् (rākṣasam) - rākṣasa (demon); मन्यमानः (manyamānaḥ) - considering; अपि (api) - even; यः (yaḥ) - who; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; नरकम् (narakam) - hell; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - would go;]
(Among dear ones, moving you, and indeed, not doing harm; guest, having the form of Brahman, and how could I kill the innocent? Rākṣasa considering even, who would kill, would go to hell. (03-154-33))
You, moving among dear ones and not doing any harm, are a guest and bear the form of Brahman—how could I kill an innocent being? Even considering as a rākṣasa, whoever were to kill one would go to hell. (03-154-33)
अपक्वस्य च कालेन वधस्तव न विद्यते। नूनमद्यासि सम्पक्वो यथा ते मतिरीदृशी ॥ दत्ता कृष्णापहरणे कालेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ॥०३-१५४-३४॥
apakvasya ca kālena vadhas tava na vidyate। nūnam ady āsi sampakvo yathā te matir īdṛśī॥ dattā kṛṣṇāpaharaṇe kālena adbhutakarmaṇā॥ 03-154-34॥
[अपक्वस्य (apakvasya) - of the unripe; च (ca) - and; कालेन (kālena) - by time; वधः (vadhaḥ) - slaying; तव (tava) - your; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; अद्य (adya) - today; असि (asi) - you are; सम्पक्वः (sampakvaḥ) - fully ripe; यथा (yathā) - as; ते (te) - your; मति: (matiḥ) - mind; ईदृशी (īdṛśī) - such; दत्ता (dattā) - given; कृष्णापहरणे (kṛṣṇāpaharaṇe) - in the abduction of Krishna; कालेन (kālena) - by time; अद्भुतकर्मणा (adbhutakarmaṇā) - by the wondrous deed;]
(For the unripe, by time, slaying of yours does not exist. Certainly today you are fully ripe, as your mind is such. Given in the abduction of Krishna by time, by the wondrous deed.)
For one who is unripe, fate does not allow death. Surely, today you are matured, as your mind is of this kind—destined by the wondrous act of time in the abduction of Krishna. (03-154-34)
बडिशोऽयं त्वया ग्रस्तः कालसूत्रेण लम्बितः। मत्स्योऽम्भसीव स्यूतास्यः कथं मेऽद्य गमिष्यसि ॥०३-१५४-३५॥
baḍiśo'yaṃ tvayā grastaḥ kālasūtreṇa lambitaḥ। matsyo'mbhasīva syūtāsyaḥ kathaṃ me'dya gamiṣyasi॥03-154-35॥
[बडिशः (baḍiśaḥ) - hook; अयम् (ayam) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ग्रस्तः (grastaḥ) - seized; कालसूत्रेण (kālasūtreṇa) - by the thread of time; लम्बितः (lambitaḥ) - hung; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; अम्भसि (ambhasi) - in water; इव (iva) - like; स्यूतास्यः (syūtāsyaḥ) - with a pierced mouth; कथम् (katham) - how; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - will you go;]
(This hook, by you seized, by the thread of time hung, fish in water like, with a pierced mouth, how to me today will you go?)
Just as a fish in water, caught on a hook and pierced in the mouth, hangs by the thread of time—how will you come to me today? (03-154-35)
यं चासि प्रस्थितो देशं मनः पूर्वं गतं च ते। न तं गन्तासि गन्तासि मार्गं बकहिडिम्बयोः ॥०३-१५४-३६॥
yaṃ cāsi prasthito deśaṃ manaḥ pūrvaṃ gataṃ ca te। na taṃ gantāsi gantāsi mārgaṃ bakahiḍimbayoḥ॥03-154-36॥
[यं (yaṃ) - which; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - gone forth; देशं (deśam) - place; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; गतं (gataṃ) - gone; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; तं (taṃ) - that; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will go; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will go; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - path; बकहिडिम्बयोः (bakahiḍimbayoḥ) - of Baka and Hiḍimba;]
(Which and you are set forth to the place where your mind has gone before, not that you will go, you will go the path of Baka and Hiḍimba.)
The place to which you have set out, where your mind had gone before, you will not go, you will go the path of Baka and Hiḍimba. (03-154-36)
एवमुक्तस्तु भीमेन राक्षसः कालचोदितः। भीत उत्सृज्य तान्सर्वान्युद्धाय समुपस्थितः ॥०३-१५४-३७॥
evam uktas tu bhīmena rākṣasaḥ kāla-coditaḥ। bhīta utsṛjya tān sarvān yuddhāya samupasthitaḥ॥03-154-37॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; कालचोदितः (kāla-coditaḥ) - impelled by time; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - frightened; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; तान् (tān) - those; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; समुपस्थितः (samupasthitaḥ) - approached;]
(Thus spoken to by Bhīma, the demon, impelled by time, frightened, having abandoned all those, approached for battle.)
When thus addressed by Bhīma, the demon, impelled by fate, terrified, abandoned all his companions and stood ready for battle. (03-154-37)
अब्रवीच्च पुनर्भीमं रोषात्प्रस्फुरिताधरः। न मे मूढा दिशः पाप त्वदर्थं मे विलम्बनम् ॥०३-१५४-३८॥
abravīc ca punar bhīmaṃ roṣāt prasphuritādharaḥ। na me mūḍhā diśaḥ pāpa tvadartham me vilambanam॥03-154-38॥
[अब्रवीत् च (abravīt ca) - and (he) spoke; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भीमम् (bhīmam) - to Bhīma; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; प्रस्फुरित-अधरः (prasphurita-adharaḥ) - with quivering lip; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; मूढाः (mūḍhāḥ) - confused; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; पाप (pāpa) - sinful one; त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for your sake; मे (me) - for me; विलम्बनम् (vilambanam) - delay;]
(And he spoke again to Bhīma out of anger, his lip quivering: Not to me are the directions confused, sinful one, for your sake is my delay.)
Then, with quivering lips in anger, he spoke to Bhīma again: 'My senses are not confused, O sinner; my delay is only for your sake.' (03-154-38)
श्रुता मे राक्षसा ये ये त्वया विनिहता रणे। तेषामद्य करिष्यामि तवास्रेणोदकक्रियाम् ॥०३-१५४-३९॥
śrutā me rākṣasā ye ye tvayā vinihatā raṇe। teṣām adya kariṣyāmi tavāsreṇodakakriyām ॥03-154-39॥

(Heard by me rākṣasas who, who by you slain in battle; for them today I will do with your blood the water-rite.)
I have heard of the rākṣasas who were slain by you in battle; today, with your blood, I will perform the water-rite for them. (03-154-39)
एवमुक्तस्ततो भीमः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन्। स्मयमान इव क्रोधात्साक्षात्कालान्तकोपमः ॥ बाहुसंरम्भमेवेच्छन्नभिदुद्राव राक्षसम् ॥०३-१५४-४०॥
evam-uktas-tato bhīmaḥ sṛkkiṇī parisaṁlihan। smayamāna iva krodhāt sākṣāt kālāntakopamaḥ॥ bāhu-saṁrambham eva icchan abhidudrāva rā kṣasam॥03-154-40॥

(Thus having been addressed then Bhima, licking his lips all around, grinning as if from anger, directly like Kāla or Antaka, desiring only the exertion of his arms, rushed upon the demon.)
Thus, when addressed, Bhima, licking his lips and grinning as if in anger, looking just like Death himself, wishing only for the exertion of his arms, rushed at the demon. (03-154-40)
राक्षसोऽपि तदा भीमं युद्धार्थिनमवस्थितम्। अभिदुद्राव संरब्धो बलो वज्रधरं यथा ॥०३-१५४-४१॥
rākṣaso'pi tadā bhīmaṃ yuddhārthinam avasthitam। abhidudrāva saṃrabdho balo vajradharaṃ yathā॥03-154-41॥
[राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the Rākṣasa (demon); अपि (api) - also; तदा (tadā) - then; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma (the name); युद्धार्थिनम् (yuddhārthinam) - seeking battle; अवस्थितम् (avasthitam) - standing; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - rushed towards; संरब्धः (saṃrabdhaḥ) - enraged; बलः (balaḥ) - Bala (the strong one; i.e., the Rākṣasa himself); वज्रधरं (vajradharam) - one who holds the thunderbolt (Indra); यथा (yathā) - like;]
(The Rākṣasa also then towards Bhīma, seeking battle and standing, rushed enraged, Bala (the strong) like (unto) the holder of the thunderbolt.)
The Rākṣasa too then, enraged, rushed towards Bhīma—who was standing ready for battle—just like Bala (the strong one) would rush at the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra). (03-154-41)
वर्तमाने तदा ताभ्यां बाहुयुद्धे सुदारुणे। माद्रीपुत्रावभिक्रुद्धावुभावप्यभ्यधावताम् ॥०३-१५४-४२॥
vartamāne tadā tābhyāṃ bāhuyuddhe sudāruṇe। mādrīputrāvabhikruddhāvubhāvapyabhyadhāvatām ॥03-154-42॥

(When ongoing then by those two, in very terrible hand-to-hand combat, the two sons of Mādrī, very enraged, both also rushed (towards each other).)
At that moment, as the fierce hand-to-hand combat continued, the two sons of Mādrī, both very enraged, rushed at each other. (03-154-42)
न्यवारयत्तौ प्रहसन्कुन्तीपुत्रो वृकोदरः। शक्तोऽहं राक्षसस्येति प्रेक्षध्वमिति चाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१५४-४३॥
nyavārayattau prahasan kuntīputro vṛkodaraḥ। śakto'haṃ rākṣasasyeti prekṣadhvam iti cābravit ॥03-154-43॥

(He restrained the two, smiling, the son of Kuntī, Vṛkodara. 'Capable am I of the Rākṣasa—thus, look (you all),' thus also he said.)
Smiling, Vṛkodara, the son of Kuntī, restrained the two and said, 'I am capable of facing the Rākṣasa—just watch.' (03-154-43)
आत्मना भ्रातृभिश्चाहं धर्मेण सुकृतेन च। इष्टेन च शपे राजन्सूदयिष्यामि राक्षसम् ॥०३-१५४-४४॥
ātmanā bhrātṛbhiśca ahaṃ dharmeṇa sukṛtena ca | iṣṭena ca śape rājan sūdayiṣyāmi rākṣasam ॥03-154-44॥

इत्येवमुक्त्वा तौ वीरौ स्पर्धमानौ परस्परम्। बाहुभिः समसज्जेतामुभौ रक्षोवृकोदरौ ॥०३-१५४-४५॥

Thus, having spoken in this way, those two heroes—the Rākṣasa and Bhīma (Vṛkodara)—competed with each other and both engaged in battle with their arms. (03-154-45)
तयोरासीत्सम्प्रहारः क्रुद्धयोर्भीमरक्षसोः। अमृष्यमाणयोः सङ्ख्ये देवदानवयोरिव ॥०३-१५४-४६॥
tayor āsīt samprahāraḥ kruddhayor bhīma-rakṣasoḥ। amṛṣyamāṇayoḥ saṅkhye deva-dānavayor iva॥03-154-46॥

आरुज्यारुज्य तौ वृक्षानन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः। जीमूताविव घर्मान्ते विनदन्तौ महाबलौ ॥०३-१५४-४७॥
ārujyārujya tau vṛkṣān anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ। jīmūtāv iva gharmānte vinadantau mahābalau॥03-154-47॥

babhañjatur mahāvṛkṣān ūrubhir balināṃ varau। anyonyenābhisaṃrabdhau parasparajayaiṣiṇau ॥03-154-48॥

तद्वृक्षयुद्धमभवन्महीरुहविनाशनम्। वालिसुग्रीवयोर्भ्रात्रोः पुरेव कपिसिंहयोः ॥०३-१५४-४९॥
tad-vṛkṣa-yuddham abhavat mahī-ruha-vināśanam। vāli-sugrīvayoḥ bhrātroḥ purā iva kapi-siṃhayoḥ ॥03-154-49॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वृक्षयुद्धम् (vṛkṣa-yuddham) - tree-battle; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; महीरुहविनाशनम् (mahī-ruha-vināśanam) - destruction of trees; वालि-सुग्रीवयोः (vāli-sugrīvayoḥ) - of Vāli and Sugrīva; भ्रात्रोः (bhrātroḥ) - of the brothers; पुरा (purā) - formerly; इव (iva) - like; कपि-सिंहयोः (kapi-siṃhayoḥ) - of the monkey-lions;]

That battle with trees became a destruction of trees for Vāli and Sugrīva, the two brother monkey-chiefs, just as before. (03-154-49)
आविध्याविध्य तौ वृक्षान्मुहूर्तमितरेतरम्। ताडयामासतुरुभौ विनदन्तौ मुहुर्मुहुः ॥०३-१५४-५०॥
āvidhyāvidhya tau vṛkṣān muhūrtam itaretaram. tāḍayāmāsatur ubhau vinadantau muhurmuhuḥ ॥03-154-50॥

तस्मिन्देशे यदा वृक्षाः सर्व एव निपातिताः। पुञ्जीकृताश्च शतशः परस्परवधेप्सया ॥०३-१५४-५१॥
tasmin deśe yadā vṛkṣāḥ sarva eva nipātitāḥ। puñjīkṛtāś ca śataśaḥ parasparavadhepsayā ॥03-154-51॥

तदा शिलाः समादाय मुहूर्तमिव भारत। महाभ्रैरिव शैलेन्द्रौ युयुधाते महाबलौ ॥०३-१५४-५२॥
tadā śilāḥ samādāya muhūrtam iva bhārata। mahābhrair iva śailendrau yuyudhāte mahābalau ॥03-154-52॥

उग्राभिरुग्ररूपाभिर्बृहतीभिः परस्परम्। वज्रैरिव महावेगैराजघ्नतुरमर्षणौ ॥०३-१५४-५३॥
ugrābhir ugrarūpābhir bṛhatībhiḥ parasparam। vajrair iva mahāvegair ājaghnatur amarṣaṇau ॥03-154-53॥

मुष्टिभिश्च महाघोरैरन्योन्यमभिपेततुः। तयोश्चटचटाशब्दो बभूव सुमहात्मनोः ॥०३-१५४-५५॥
muṣṭibhiś ca mahāghorair anyonyam abhipetatūḥ। tayoś caṭacaṭāśabdo babhūva sumahātmanoḥ॥03-154-55॥

tataḥ saṃhṛtya muṣṭiṃ tu pañcaśīrṣam-iva-oragam. vegenābhyahanad-bhīmo rākṣasasya śiro-dharām ॥03-154-56॥

(Then, having drawn back his fist, but like a five-headed serpent, with speed Bhima struck the neck of the demon.)

(Then the exhausted but that rakṣas, struck by the arm of Bhīmasena, having perceived (it) completely exhausted, Bhīmasena approached.)
Then Bhīmasena, seeing that the exhausted rakṣas whom he had struck with his arm was completely spent, approached him. (03-154-57)
तत एनं महाबाहुर्बाहुभ्याममरोपमः। समुत्क्षिप्य बलाद्भीमो निष्पिपेष महीतले ॥०३-१५४-५८॥
tat enaṁ mahābāhur bāhubhyām amaropamaḥ। samutkṣipya balād bhīmo niṣpipeṣa mahītale॥03-154-58॥

(Then him mighty-armed with (his) arms, equal to the immortals, having lifted up with force, Bhima crushed on the ground.)

(Of him, the limbs all powdered; the Pāṇḍava with the club and having struck the head from the body removed.)
The Pāṇḍava crushed all his limbs; and with the club, after striking, he removed the head from the body. (03-154-59)
संदष्टोष्ठं विवृत्ताक्षं फलं वृन्तादिव च्युतम्। जटासुरस्य तु शिरो भीमसेनबलाद्धृतम् ॥ पपात रुधिरादिग्धं संदष्टदशनच्छदम् ॥०३-१५४-६०॥
saṁdaṣṭoṣṭhaṁ vivṛttākṣaṁ phalaṁ vṛntād iva cyutam। jaṭāsurasya tu śiro bhīmasenabalādd hṛtam॥ papāta rudhirādigdhaṁ saṁdaṣṭadaśanacchadam॥03-154-60॥
[संदष्टोष्ठं (saṁdaṣṭoṣṭham) - with bitten lips; विवृत्ताक्षं (vivṛttākṣam) - with eyes turned (rolling) outwards; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; वृन्तात् (vṛntāt) - from the stalk; इव (iva) - like; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen; जटासुरस्य (jaṭāsurasya) - of Jaṭāsura; तु (tu) - but; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; भीमसेनबलात् (bhīmasenabalāt) - by the strength of Bhīmasena; धृतम् (dhṛtam) - severed; पपात (papāta) - fell; रुधिरादिग्धम् (rudhirādigdham) - smeared with blood; संदष्टदशनच्छदम् (saṁdaṣṭadaśanacchadam) - with the covering of teeth pressed together;]
(With lips bitten, eyes rolling outwards, the head of Jaṭāsura, like fruit fallen from the stalk, severed by the strength of Bhīmasena, fell down, smeared with blood, with the covering of teeth pressed together.)
With lips bitten and eyes bulging, the severed head of Jaṭāsura, like fruit fallen from its stalk, was cut off by the strength of Bhīmasena and fell, smeared with blood, its jaws clenched. (03-154-60)
तं निहत्य महेष्वासो युधिष्ठिरमुपागमत्। स्तूयमानो द्विजाग्र्यैस्तैर्मरुद्भिरिव वासवः ॥०३-१५४-६१॥
taṁ nihatya maheṣvāso yudhiṣṭhiram upāgamat। stūyamāno dvijāgryaistair marudbhir iva vāsavaḥ ॥03-154-61॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - the great archer; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached; स्तूयमानः (stūyamānaḥ) - being praised; द्विजाग्र्यैः (dvijāgryaiḥ) - by the foremost twice-born (Brahmins); तैः (taiḥ) - by them; मरुद्भिः (marudbhiḥ) - by the Maruts; इव (iva) - like; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra (lord of the Vasus);]
(Him having slain, the great archer approached Yudhishthira; being praised by the foremost twice-born by them, like Indra by the Maruts.)
