निहते राक्षसे तस्मिन्पुनर्नारायणाश्रमम्। अभ्येत्य राजा कौन्तेयो निवासमकरोत्प्रभुः ॥०३-१५५-१॥
nihate rākṣase tasmin punar nārāyaṇāśramam। abhyetya rājā kaunteyo nivāsam akarot prabhuḥ ॥03-155-1॥
[निहते (nihate) - being slain; राक्षसे (rākṣase) - the demon; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - that; पुनः (punar) - again; नारायणाश्रमम् (nārāyaṇāśramam) - Nārāyaṇa's hermitage; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; राजा (rājā) - the king; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kuntī; निवासम् (nivāsam) - residence; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(The demon being slain, that one again to Nārāyaṇa's hermitage, having approached, the king, son of Kuntī, residence made, the lord.)
When the demon was slain, the king, son of Kuntī, again went to Nārāyaṇa's hermitage and took up residence there, O lord. (03-155-1)
स समानीय तान्सर्वान्भ्रातॄनित्यब्रवीद्वचः। द्रौपद्या सहितान्काले संस्मरन्भ्रातरं जयम् ॥०३-१५५-२॥
sa samānīya tān sarvān bhrātṝn ity abravīd vacaḥ। draupadyā sahitān kāle saṃsmaran bhrātaraṃ jayam ॥03-155-2॥

(He, having brought together all those brothers, thus spoke these words; with Draupadī, accompanied at the proper time, remembering the brother Jaya.)

समाश्चतस्रोऽभिगताः शिवेन चरतां वने। कृतोद्देशश्च बीभत्सुः पञ्चमीमभितः समाम् ॥०३-१५५-३॥

The four years spent by those wandering in the forest with Śiva have been reached; and Bibhatsu, after receiving instruction, surrounded the fifth year. (03-155-3)
प्राप्य पर्वतराजानं श्वेतं शिखरिणां वरम्। तत्रापि च कृतोद्देशः समागमदिदृक्षुभिः ॥०३-१५५-४॥
prāpya parvatarājānaṃ śvetaṃ śikhariṇāṃ varam। tatrāpi ca kṛtoddeśaḥ samāgamadidṛkṣubhiḥ ॥03-155-4॥
[प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; पर्वतराजानं (parvatarājānam) - the king of mountains; श्वेतं (śvetam) - white; शिखरिणां (śikhariṇām) - among mountains; वरम् (varam) - the best; तत्र अपि (tatra api) - there also; च (ca) - and; कृत उद्देशः (kṛtauddeśaḥ) - having made a declaration; समागम-दिदृक्षुभिः (samāgama-didṛkṣubhiḥ) - by those desiring to assemble;]
(Having reached the king of mountains, the white one, the best among peaks, there also, indeed, a declaration was made by those desiring to assemble.)
After reaching the king of mountains, the white one and best among the mountains, there too, a declaration was made by those who wished to gather. (03-155-4)
कृतश्च समयस्तेन पार्थेनामिततेजसा। पञ्च वर्षाणि वत्स्यामि विद्यार्थीति पुरा मयि ॥०३-१५५-५॥
kṛtaś ca samayas tena pārthenāmitatejasā। pañca varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vidyārthīti purā mayi॥03-155-5॥
[कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; च (ca) - and; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; तेन (tena) - by him; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable energy; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वत्स्यामि (vatsyāmi) - I will dwell; विद्यार्थी (vidyārthī) - as a seeker of knowledge; इति (iti) - thus; पुरा (purā) - formerly; मयि (mayi) - with me;]
(And an agreement was made by him, by Pārtha of immeasurable energy: "For five years I will dwell as a seeker of knowledge," thus, formerly, with me.)
An agreement was made with me in the past by Pārtha of immeasurable energy: "I will dwell as a seeker of knowledge for five years." (03-155-5)
तत्र गाण्डीवधन्वानमवाप्तास्त्रमरिंदमम्। देवलोकादिमं लोकं द्रक्ष्यामः पुनरागतम् ॥०३-१५५-६॥
tatra gāṇḍīvadhanvānam avāptāstram ariṃdamam। devalokād imaṃ lokaṃ drakṣyāmaḥ punar-āgatam ॥03-155-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; गाण्डीवधन्वानम् (gāṇḍīvadhanvānam) - Gāṇḍīva-bow-wielder; अवाप्तास्त्रम् (avāptāstram) - having obtained weapon; अरिंदमम् (ariṃdamam) - subduer of enemies; देवलोकात् (devalokāt) - from the world of the gods; इमं (imaṃ) - this; लोकम् (lokam) - world; द्रक्ष्यामः (drakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall see; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगतम् (āgatam) - who has come;]
(There Gāṇḍīva-bow-wielder having obtained weapon, subduer of enemies, from the world of the gods, this world, we shall see again who has come.)
There, we shall see the Gāṇḍīva-bow-wielder, the subduer of enemies, who, having obtained his weapon, has returned to this world from the world of the gods. (03-155-6)
इत्युक्त्वा ब्राह्मणान्सर्वानामन्त्रयत पाण्डवः। कारणं चैव तत्तेषामाचचक्षे तपस्विनाम् ॥०३-१५५-७॥
ity uktvā brāhmaṇān sarvān amantrayat pāṇḍavaḥ। kāraṇaṃ caiva tat teṣām ācacakṣe tapasvinām॥03-155-7॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; आमन्त्रयत (amantrayat) - addressed; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; तेषाम् (teṣām) - to them; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - declared; तपस्विनाम् (tapasvinām) - of the ascetics;]
(Thus having spoken, to all the Brāhmaṇas addressed the son of Pāṇḍu. The reason, indeed, that to them he declared, of the ascetics. (03-155-7))

तमुग्रतपसः प्रीताः कृत्वा पार्थं प्रदक्षिणम्। ब्राह्मणास्तेऽन्वमोदन्त शिवेन कुशलेन च ॥०३-१५५-८॥
tam ugratapasaḥ prītāḥ kṛtvā pārthaṃ pradakṣiṇam। brāhmaṇās te 'nvamodanta śivena kuśalena ca ॥03-155-8॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उग्रतपसः (ugratapasaḥ) - of intense penance; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; ते (te) - they; अन्वमोदन्त (anvamodanta) - rejoiced; शिवेन (śivena) - with auspiciousness; कुशलेन (kuśalena) - with welfare; च (ca) - and;]
(Him of intense penance, pleased, having made a circumambulation of Pārtha, the Brāhmaṇas, they rejoiced with auspiciousness and welfare.)
The Brāhmaṇas, pleased with him of intense penance, circumambulated Pārtha and then rejoiced, wishing auspiciousness and welfare. (03-155-8)
सुखोदर्कमिमं क्लेशमचिराद्भरतर्षभ। क्षत्रधर्मेण धर्मज्ञ तीर्त्वा गां पालयिष्यसि ॥०३-१५५-९॥
sukhodarkam imaṁ kleśam acirād bharatarṣabha। kṣatradharmeṇa dharmajña tīrtvā gāṁ pālayiṣyasi ॥03-155-9॥
[सुखोदर्कम् (sukhodarkam) - having happiness as its result; इमम् (imam) - this; क्लेशम् (kleśam) - suffering; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - by the duty of a kṣatriya; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; तीर्त्वा (tīrtvā) - having crossed; गाम् (gām) - the earth; पालयिष्यसि (pālayiṣyasi) - you will protect;]
(Having happiness as its result, this suffering, soon, O bull among the Bharatas, by the duty of a kṣatriya, knower of dharma, having crossed, the earth, you will protect.)
O best of the Bharatas, you, who know dharma, will soon overcome this suffering—bearing happiness as its result—by fulfilling the kṣatriya's duty, and will rule the earth. (03-155-9)
तत्तु राजा वचस्तेषां प्रतिगृह्य तपस्विनाम्। प्रतस्थे सह विप्रैस्तैर्भ्रातृभिश्च परन्तपः ॥०३-१५५-१०॥
tattu rājā vacasteṣāṃ pratigṛhya tapasvinām। pratasthe saha vipraistairbhrātṛbhiśca parantapaḥ॥03-155-10॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - king; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; तपस्विनाम् (tapasvinām) - of the ascetics; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - set out; सह (saha) - with; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - with the brāhmaṇas; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; च (ca) - and; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes;]
(But that king, having received the word of those ascetics, set out with those brāhmaṇas and with his brothers, the scorcher of foes.)
But the king, having accepted the words of those ascetics, departed with those brāhmaṇas and his brothers, the subduer of enemies. (03-155-10)
द्रौपद्या सहितः श्रीमान्हैडिम्बेयादिभिस्तथा। राक्षसैरनुयातश्च लोमशेनाभिरक्षितः ॥०३-१५५-११॥
draupadyā sahitaḥ śrīmān haiḍimbeyādibhis tathā। rākṣasair anuyātaś ca lomaśenābhirakṣitaḥ ॥03-155-11॥
[द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - with Draupadī; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; glorious; हैडिम्बेयादिभिः (haiḍimbeyādibhiḥ) - by Haiḍimbeya and others; तथा (tathā) - likewise; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - by rākṣasas (demons); अनुयातः (anuyātaḥ) - followed; च (ca) - and; लोमशेन (lomaśena) - by Lomaśa; अभिरक्षितः (abhirakṣitaḥ) - protected;]
(With Draupadī, accompanied, glorious, by Haiḍimbeya and others likewise, by rākṣasas followed and by Lomaśa protected.)

क्वचिज्जगाम पद्भ्यां तु राक्षसैरुह्यते क्वचित्। तत्र तत्र महातेजा भ्रातृभिः सह सुव्रतः ॥०३-१५५-१२॥
kvacic jagāma padbhyāṁ tu rākṣasair uhyate kvacit। tatra tatra mahā-tejā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha su-vrataḥ ॥03-155-12॥
[क्वचित् (kvacit) - somewhere; जगाम (jagāma) - went; पद्भ्याम् (padbhyām) - on (his) feet; तु (tu) - but; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - by the rākṣasas; उह्यते (uhyate) - is carried; क्वचित् (kvacit) - somewhere; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; महातेजा (mahā-tejā) - of great splendor; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (his) brothers; सह (saha) - together; सुव्रतः (su-vrataḥ) - firm in vows;]
(Somewhere he went on (his) feet, but somewhere is carried by the rākṣasas; in various places, the one of great splendor, together with (his) brothers, firm in vows.)
Sometimes he walked on foot, but elsewhere he was carried by the rākṣasas; here and there, the greatly radiant, firm in vows, together with his brothers. (03-155-12)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा बहून्क्लेशान्विचिन्तयन्। सिंहव्याघ्रगजाकीर्णामुदीचीं प्रययौ दिशम् ॥०३-१५५-१३॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bahūnkleśān vicintayan। siṃha-vyāghra-gaja-ākīrṇām udīcīṃ prayayau diśam ॥03-155-13॥

avekṣamāṇaḥ kailāsaṃ mainākaṃ caiva parvatam। gandhamādanapādāṃś ca meruṃ cāpi śiloccayam ॥03-155-14॥

उपर्युपरि शैलस्य बह्वीश्च सरितः शिवाः। प्रस्थं हिमवतः पुण्यं ययौ सप्तदशेऽहनि ॥०३-१५५-१५॥
uparyupari śailasya bahvīś ca saritaḥ śivāḥ। prasthaṃ himavataḥ puṇyaṃ yayau saptadaśe'ahani ॥03-155-15॥
[उपर्युपरि (uparyupari) - upon upon; शैलस्य (śailasya) - of the mountain; बह्वीः (bahvīḥ) - many; च (ca) - and; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious; प्रस्थं (prastham) - summit; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - holy; ययौ (yayau) - he/went; सप्तदशे (saptadaśe) - on the seventeenth; अहनि (ahani) - day;]

ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्गन्धमादनमन्तिकात्। पृष्ठे हिमवतः पुण्ये नानाद्रुमलतायुते ॥०३-१५५-१६॥
dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājan-gandhamādanam-antikāt। pṛṣṭhe himavataḥ puṇye nānā-druma-latā-yute ॥03-155-16॥

O king, the Pāṇḍavas saw the sacred Gandhamādana mountain, full of many trees and creepers, close by, on the far side of the Himalaya. (03-155-16)
सलिलावर्तसञ्जातैः पुष्पितैश्च महीरुहैः। समावृतं पुण्यतममाश्रमं वृषपर्वणः ॥०३-१५५-१७॥

अभ्यनन्दत्स राजर्षिः पुत्रवद्भरतर्षभान्। पूजिताश्चावसंस्तत्र सप्तरात्रमरिंदमाः ॥०३-१५५-१९॥

(He, the royal sage, rejoiced in the best of Bharatas as a son; and the destroyers of foes, having been honored, stayed there for seven nights.)
The royal sage was delighted with the foremost of the Bharatas as if they were his own sons; after being honored, the destroyers of foes stayed there for seven nights. (03-155-19)
अष्टमेऽहनि सम्प्राप्ते तमृषिं लोकविश्रुतम्। आमन्त्र्य वृषपर्वाणं प्रस्थानं समरोचयन् ॥०३-१५५-२०॥

नानामृगगणैर्जुष्टं कौन्तेयः सत्यविक्रमः। पदातिर्भ्रातृभिः सार्धं प्रातिष्ठत युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-१५५-२६॥

(Seeing trees rich with the weight of fruits in every season, (and) bright with flowers in every season, (and) also bent with the weight of fruit.)
They beheld trees that were heavy with fruit in every season, brilliant with flowers throughout the year, and also bowed down by the weight of their fruits. (03-155-39)
आम्रानाम्रातकान्फुल्लान्नारिकेलान्सतिन्दुकान्। अजातकांस्तथा जीरान्दाडिमान्बीजपूरकान् ॥०३-१५५-४०॥

बिल्वान्कपित्थाञ्जम्बूंश्च काश्मरीर्बदरीस्तथा। प्लक्षानुदुम्बरवटानश्वत्थान्क्षीरिणस्तथा ॥ भल्लातकानामलकान्हरीतकबिभीतकान् ॥०३-१५५-४२॥

iṅgudān karavīrāṁś ca tindukāṁś ca mahāphalān। etān anyāṁś ca vividhān gandhamādana-sānuṣu ॥03-155-43॥
[इङ्गुदान् (iṅgudān) - inguda trees (sapota) trees; करवीरान् (karavīrān) - oleander trees; च (ca) - and; तिन्दुकान् (tindukān) - diospyros trees (ebony/plum); च (ca) - and; महाफलान् (mahāphalān) - with great fruit; एतान् (etān) - these; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; च (ca) - and; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; गन्धमादनसानुषु (gandhamādana-sānuṣu) - on the slopes of Gandhamadana (mountain);]
(Inguda trees, oleander trees, and tinduka trees, and those with great fruits; these and other various (trees) on the Gandhamadana slopes.)
Inguda, oleander, tinduka, and other trees bearing large fruits, as well as many other various kinds, grow on the slopes of the Gandhamadana mountain. (3-155-43)
फलैरमृतकल्पैस्तानाचितान्स्वादुभिस्तरून्। तथैव चम्पकाशोकान्केतकान्बकुलांस्तथा ॥०३-१५५-४४॥
phalair amṛtakalpais tān ācitān svādubhis tarūn। tathaiva campakāśokān ketakān bakulāṁs tathā ॥03-155-44॥

(With fruits like nectar, those sweet-laden trees; likewise campaka and aśoka trees, ketaka trees, bakula trees as well.)
There were trees laden with fruits like nectar, sweet to taste; and likewise there were campaka, aśoka, ketaka, and bakula trees as well. (03-155-44)
पुंनागान्सप्तपर्णांश्च कर्णिकारान्सकेतकान्। पाटलान्कुटजान्रम्यान्मन्दारेन्दीवरांस्तथा ॥०३-१५५-४५॥
puṁnāgān saptaparṇāṁś ca karṇikārān sekatakān। pāṭalān kuṭajān ramyān mandārān indīvarān tathā ॥03-155-45॥

पारिजातान्कोविदारान्देवदारुतरूंस्तथा। शालांस्तालांस्तमालांश्च प्रियालान्बकुलांस्तथा ॥ शाल्मलीः किंशुकाशोकाञ्शिंशपांस्तरलांस्तथा ॥०३-१५५-४६॥
pārijātān kovidārān devadāru-tarūṁs tathā। śālāṁs tālāṁs tamālāṁś ca priyālān bakulāṁs tathā॥ śālmalīḥ kiṁśuka-aśokān śiṁśapāṁs taralāṁs tathā॥03-155-46॥

चकोरैः शतपत्रैश्च भृङ्गराजैस्तथा शुकैः। कोकिलैः कलविङ्कैश्च हारीतैर्जीवजीवकैः ॥०३-१५५-४७॥
cakoraiḥ śatapatraiś ca bhṛṅgarājais tathā śukaiḥ। kokilaiḥ kalaviṅkaiś ca hāritair jīvajīvakaiḥ॥03-155-47॥
[चकोरैः (cakoraiḥ) - by chakora birds; शतपत्रैः (śatapatraiḥ) - by lotuses; (literally 'hundred-petaled', but means lotuses) च (ca) - and; भृङ्गराजैः (bhṛṅgarājaiḥ) - by bhṛṅgarāja birds; तथा (tathā) - also; शुकैः (śukaiḥ) - by parrots; कोकिलैः (kokilaiḥ) - by cuckoos; कलविङ्कैः (kalaviṅkaiḥ) - by kalaviṅka birds; च (ca) - and; हारीतैः (hāritaiḥ) - by hārita birds; जीवजीवकैः (jīvajīvakaiḥ) - by jīvajīvaka birds;]

प्रियव्रतैश्चातकैश्च तथान्यैर्विविधैः खगैः। श्रोत्ररम्यं सुमधुरं कूजद्भिश्चाप्यधिष्ठितान् ॥०३-१५५-४८॥
priyavrataiś cātakaiś ca tathā anyaiḥ vividhaiḥ khagaiḥ। śrotra-ramyaṃ su-madhuraṃ kūjadbhiś ca api adhiṣṭhitān ॥03-155-48॥
[प्रियव्रतैः (priyavrataiḥ) - by (the birds called) priyavrata; च (ca) - and; आतकैः (cātakaiḥ) - by (the birds called) cātaka; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; खगैः (khagaiḥ) - by birds; श्रोत्ररम्यं (śrotra-ramyam) - pleasing to the ear; सुमधुरं (su-madhuram) - very sweet; कूजद्भिः (kūjadbhiḥ) - by chirping (ones); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अधिष्ठितान् (adhiṣṭhitān) - inhabited; ॥०३-१५५-४८॥ (॥03-155-48॥) -;]
(By priyavrata birds and cātaka birds and so by others, by various birds, pleasing to the ear, very sweet, by those chirping, and also inhabited.)
(The groves are) inhabited by priyavrata and cātaka birds and by various other kinds of birds, (whose presence) is pleasing to the ear and very sweet with their chirping. (03-155-48)
सरांसि च विचित्राणि प्रसन्नसलिलानि च। कुमुदैः पुण्डरीकैश्च तथा कोकनदोत्पलैः ॥ कह्लारैः कमलैश्चैव आचितानि समन्ततः ॥०३-१५५-४९॥
sarāṁsi ca vicitrāṇi prasannasalilāni ca। kumudaiḥ puṇḍarīkaiśca tathā kokanadotpalaiḥ॥ kahlāraiḥ kamalaiścaiva ācitāni samantataḥ॥03-155-49॥
[सरांसि (sarāṁsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - variegated; प्रसन्नसलिलानि (prasannasalilāni) - with clear water; च (ca) - and; कुमुदैः (kumudaiḥ) - with white lotuses; पुण्डरीकैः (puṇḍarīkaiḥ) - with blue lotuses; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; कोकनदोत्पलैः (kokanadotpalaiḥ) - with red lotuses and utpalas; कह्लारैः (kahlāraiḥ) - with kahlaara flowers (water lilies); कमलैः (kamalaiḥ) - with lotuses; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आचितानि (ācitāni) - filled; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;]
(Lakes and variegated, clear waters and with kumuda, with puṇḍarīka and also with kokanada and utpala, with kahlaara and with lotuses indeed, filled all around.)
There were lakes with clear, variegated waters, adorned all around with kumuda, puṇḍarīka, kokanada and utpala, kahlaara, and lotuses. (03-155-49)
कदम्बैश्चक्रवाकैश्च कुररैर्जलकुक्कुटैः। कारण्डवैः प्लवैर्हंसैर्बकैर्मद्गुभिरेव च ॥ एतैश्चान्यैश्च कीर्णानि समन्ताज्जलचारिभिः ॥०३-१५५-५०॥
kadambaiś cakravākaiś ca kuraraiḥ jalakukkuṭaiḥ. kāraṇḍavaiḥ plavaiḥ haṃsaiḥ bakair madgubhir eva ca ॥ etaiś ca anyaiś ca kīrṇāni samantāt jalacāribhiḥ ॥03-155-50॥
[कदम्बैः (kadambaiḥ) - with kadamba (cotton teal) ducks; चक्रवाकैः (cakravākaiḥ) - with cakravāka (ruddy shelduck) ducks; च (ca) - and; कुररैः (kuraraiḥ) - with kurara (osprey) birds; जलकुक्कुटैः (jalakukkuṭaiḥ) - with jalakukkuṭa (waterfowl, water-cocks); कारण्डवैः (kāraṇḍavaiḥ) - with kāraṇḍava (common pochard) ducks; प्लवैः (plavaiḥ) - with plava (diving) birds; हंसैः (haṃsaiḥ) - with haṃsa (swans); बकैः (bakaiḥ) - with baka (cranes); मद्गुभिः (madgubhiḥ) - with madgu (paddy bird) birds; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एतैः (etaiḥ) - with these; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with others; च (ca) - and; कीर्णानि (kīrṇāni) - strewn; समन्तात् (samantāt) - all around; जलचारिभिः (jalacāribhiḥ) - with water-dwelling (creatures);]
(With kadamba ducks, cakravāka ducks and kurara birds and waterfowl, with kāraṇḍava ducks, diving birds, swans, cranes, and madgu birds indeed and; with these and with others, strewn all around with water-dwelling beings.)
With kadamba ducks, cakravāka geese, kurara birds, waterfowl, kāraṇḍava ducks, diving birds, swans, cranes, and madgu birds—indeed, with these and with others—(the waters) were filled all around with creatures dwelling in the water. (03-155-50)
हृष्टैस्तथा तामरसरसासवमदालसैः। पद्मोदरच्युतरजःकिञ्जल्कारुणरञ्जितैः ॥०३-१५५-५१॥
hṛṣṭaistathā tāmarasarasāsavamadālasaīḥ। padmodaracyutarajaḥkiñjalkāruṇarañjitaiḥ ॥03-155-51॥
[हृष्टैः (hṛṣṭaiḥ) - with delighted; तथा (tathā) - thus; तामरसरसासवमदालसैः (tāmarasarasāsavamadālasaīḥ) - weary with the intoxication (madālasaiḥ) of the nectar (asava) of lotuses (tāmarasara); पद्मोदरच्युतरजःकिञ्जल्कारुणरञ्जितैः (padmodaracyutarajaḥkiñjalkāruṇarañjitaiḥ) - reddened by the filaments (kiñjalka) colored (aruṇa-rañjitaiḥ) by pollen (rajaḥ) fallen from the hearts (udaracyuta) of lotuses (padma);]
(With delighted (birds), thus, weary with the intoxication of the nectar of lotuses, reddened by the filaments colored red by the pollen fallen from the hearts of lotuses.)
Thus, (the birds were) delighted, languid from the intoxication of lotus-nectar, and reddened by filaments stained crimson with the pollen that had fallen from the hearts of lotuses. (03-155-51)
मधुरस्वरैर्मधुकरैर्विरुतान्कमलाकरान्। पश्यन्तस्ते मनोरम्यान्गन्धमादनसानुषु ॥०३-१५५-५२॥
madhurasvarair madhukaraiḥ virutān kamalākarān। paśyantas te manoram yān gandhamādana-sānuṣu॥03-155-52॥
[मधुरस्वरैः (madhurasvaraiḥ) - with sweet sounds; मधुकरैः (madhukaraiḥ) - by bees; विरुतान् (virutān) - resounding; कमलाकरान् (kamalākarān) - lotus ponds; पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - seeing; ते (te) - they; मनोरम्यान् (manoram yān) - charming; गन्धमादनसानुषु (gandhamādana-sānuṣu) - on the slopes of Gandhamadana;]
(With sweet sounds by bees resounding, the lotus ponds, seeing they charming on the slopes of Gandhamadana.)
They saw the charming lotus ponds, resounding with sweet sounds of bees, on the slopes of Gandhamadana. (03-155-52)
तथैव पद्मषण्डैश्च मण्डितेषु समन्ततः। शिखण्डिनीभिः सहिताँल्लतामण्डपकेषु च ॥ मेघतूर्यरवोद्दाममदनाकुलितान्भृशम् ॥०३-१५५-५३॥
tathaiva padmaṣaṇḍaiś ca maṇḍiteṣu samantataḥ। śikhaṇḍinībhiḥ sahitāṃl latāmaṇḍapakeṣu ca ॥ meghatūryaravoddāmamadanākulitān bhṛśam ॥03-155-53॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; पद्मषण्डैः (padmaṣaṇḍaiḥ) - by clusters of lotuses; च (ca) - and; मण्डितेषु (maṇḍiteṣu) - adorned (places); समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; शिखण्डिनीभिः (śikhaṇḍinībhiḥ) - by peahens; सहितान् (sahitān) - accompanied (with); लतामण्डपकेषु (latāmaṇḍapakeṣu) - in vine-bowers; च (ca) - and; मेघतूर्यरव (meghatūryarava) - by the sound of cloud-trumpets; उद्दाम (uddāma) - intense; मद (mada) - with intoxication; नाकुलितान् (nākulitān) - agitated; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly;]
(Likewise, by clusters of lotuses adorned on all sides, and by peahens accompanied in vine-bowers, and by the intense intoxication caused by the sound of cloud-trumpets, exceedingly agitated.)
In the same way, in groves adorned everywhere with clusters of lotuses, and in vine-bowers filled with peahens, there were those greatly excited by the overpowering intoxication of the thunderous sound of rain clouds. (03-155-53)
कृत्वैव केकामधुरं सङ्गीतमधुरस्वरम्। चित्रान्कलापान्विस्तीर्य सविलासान्मदालसान् ॥ मयूरान्ददृशुश्चित्रान्नृत्यतो वनलासकान् ॥०३-१५५-५४॥
kṛtvaiva kekā-madhuraṃ saṅgīta-madhura-svaram। citrān kalāpān vistīrya savilāsān madālasān॥ mayūrān dadṛśuś citrān nṛtyato vana-lāsakān॥03-155-54॥
[कृत्वा एव (kṛtvā eva) - having made indeed; केक-मधुरं (keka-madhuraṃ) - cry-sweet; सङ्गीत-मधुर-स्वरम् (saṅgīta-madhura-svaram) - music-sweet-voiced; चित्रान् कलापान् (citrān kalāpān) - variegated tails; विस्तीर्य (vistīrya) - having spread; सविलासान् (savilāsān) - with grace; मद-अलसान् (mada-alasān) - intoxication-sluggish; मयूरान् (mayūrān) - peacocks; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; चित्रान् (citrān) - variegated; नृत्यतः (nṛtyataḥ) - dancing; वन-लासकान् (vana-lāsakān) - forest-revellers;]
(Having indeed made a cry sweet as music and melodious in voice, having spread their variegated tails, graceful and sluggish with intoxication, peacocks, they saw — variegated, dancing, forest revellers. (03-155-54))
They saw peacocks, with variegated tails spread out, graceful and languid with intoxication, producing cries sweet as melodious music, dancing as the revellers of the forest. (03-155-54)
कान्ताभिः सहितानन्यानपश्यन्रमतः सुखम्। वल्लीलतासङ्कटेषु कटकेषु स्थितांस्तथा ॥०३-१५५-५५॥
kāntābhiḥ sahitān anyān apaśyan ramataḥ sukham। vallī-latā-saṅkaṭeṣu kaṭakeṣu sthitān tathā ॥03-155-55॥
[कान्ताभिः (kāntābhiḥ) - with beloved women; सहितान् (sahitān) - united (with them); अन्यान् (anyān) - others; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - not seeing; रमतः (ramataḥ) - enjoying; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; वल्ली-लता-सङ्कटेषु (vallī-latā-saṅkaṭeṣu) - in the thickets of creepers and vines; कटकेषु (kaṭakeṣu) - in groves; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(With beloved women united, not seeing others, enjoying happiness; in the thickets of creepers and vines, in groves, those standing likewise.)
Enjoying happiness together with their beloved women, not observing anyone else, standing amidst the thickets of vines and groves, in the same way. (03-155-55)
कांश्चिच्छकुनजातांश्च विटपेषूत्कटानपि। कलापरचिताटोपान्विचित्रमुकुटानिव ॥ विवरेषु तरूणां च मुदितान्ददृशुश्च ते ॥०३-१५५-५६॥

कर्णिकारान्विरचितान्कर्णपूरानिवोत्तमान्। अथापश्यन्कुरबकान्वनराजिषु पुष्पितान् ॥ कामवश्योत्सुककरान्कामस्येव शरोत्करान् ॥०३-१५५-५८॥

एवं क्रमेण ते वीरा वीक्षमाणाः समन्ततः। गजसङ्घसमाबाधं सिंहव्याघ्रसमायुतम् ॥०३-१५५-६३॥

विमलस्फटिकाभानि पाण्डुरच्छदनैर्द्विजैः। राजहंसैरुपेतानि सारसाभिरुतानि च ॥ सरांसि सरितः पार्थाः पश्यन्तः शैलसानुषु ॥०३-१५५-६६॥
vimalasphaṭikābhāni pāṇḍuracchadanairdvijaiḥ। rājahaṁsairupetāni sārasābhirutāni ca ॥ sarāṁsi saritaḥ pārthāḥ paśyantaḥ śailasānuṣu ॥03-155-66॥

हरितारुणवर्णानां शाद्वलानां समन्ततः। सारसाः प्रतिदृश्यन्ते शैलप्रस्रवणेष्वपि ॥०३-१५५-७५॥
haritāruṇavarṇānāṃ śādvalānāṃ samantataḥ। sārasāḥ pratidṛśyante śailaprasravaṇeṣv api ॥03-155-75॥

(Of those (having) green-red hue grassy patches all around, cranes are seen in the mountain springs also.)

वदन्ति मधुरा वाचः सर्वभूतमनोनुगाः। भृङ्गराजोपचक्राश्च लोहपृष्ठाश्च पत्रिणः ॥०३-१५५-७६॥
vadanti madhurā vācaḥ sarva-bhūta-mano-anugāḥ. bhṛṅga-rāja-upacakrāś ca loha-pṛṣṭhāś ca patriṇaḥ ॥03-155-76॥
[वदन्ति (vadanti) - they speak; मधुरा (madhurā) - sweet; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; सर्वभूतमनोनुगाः (sarva-bhūta-mano-anugāḥ) - following (being agreeable to) the minds of all beings; भृङ्गराजोपचक्राः (bhṛṅga-rāja-upacakrāḥ) - having whorls of flowers resembling king of bees (bhṛṅgarāja flowers); च (ca) - and; लोहपृष्ठाः (loha-pṛṣṭhāḥ) - with iron-spined (having iron-like surface); च (ca) - and; पत्रिणः (patriṇaḥ) - the leaf-bearing ones (plants/trees);]
(They speak sweet words following the minds of all beings; and the leaf-bearing ones have whorls of flowers resembling the king of bees, and have iron surfaces.)
They utter sweet words that are agreeable to the mind of all beings; and these leafy plants possess whorled flowers like the bhṛṅgarāja and iron-like surfaces. (03-155-76)
चतुर्विषाणाः पद्माभाः कुञ्जराः सकरेणवः। एते वैडूर्यवर्णाभं क्षोभयन्ति महत्सरः ॥०३-१५५-७७॥
catur-viṣāṇāḥ padmābhāḥ kuñjarāḥ sakareṇavaḥ। ete vaiḍūrya-varṇābhaṃ kṣobhayanti mahat-saraḥ ॥03-155-77॥

(Somewhere having the appearance of the color of collyrium, somewhere having the resemblance of gold, the ores of haritāla, somewhere of dhingulaka and;)
In some places, the ores appear like the color of collyrium, in some places resembling gold; there are ores of haritāla (orpiment), and in some places of dhingulaka (cinnabar). (03-155-80)
मनःशिलागुहाश्चैव सन्ध्याभ्रनिकरोपमाः। शशलोहितवर्णाभाः क्वचिद्गैरिकधातवः ॥०३-१५५-८१॥
manaḥśilāguhāścaiva sandhyābhra-nikaropamāḥ| śaśalohita-varṇābhāḥ kvacid gairika-dhātavaḥ ॥03-155-81॥
[मनःशिला (manaḥśilā) - realgar (a red mineral); गुहाः (guhāḥ) - caves; चैव (caiva) - and also; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight; अभ्र (abhra) - cloud; निकर (nikara) - multitude; group; उपमाः (upamāḥ) - like; comparable; शशलोहित (śaśalohita) - rabbit-blood (deep red); वर्णाभाः (varṇābhāḥ) - color; appearance; क्वचित् (kvacit) - in some places; गैरिक (gairika) - red ochre; धातवः (dhātavaḥ) - ores; minerals;]
(Realgar caves and also, like the multitude of twilight clouds; with appearance of rabbit-blood color, in some places, red ochre minerals.)

सितासिताभ्रप्रतिमा बालसूर्यसमप्रभाः। एते बहुविधाः शैलं शोभयन्ति महाप्रभाः ॥०३-१५५-८२॥
sitāsitābhra-pratimā bāla-sūrya-sama-prabhāḥ। ete bahu-vidhāḥ śailaṃ śobhayanti mahā-prabhāḥ॥03-155-82॥
[सितासिताभ्रप्रतिमा (sitāsitābhra-pratimā) - white-black-cloud-like;, बालसूर्यसमप्रभाः (bāla-sūrya-sama-prabhāḥ) - having radiance equal to the rising sun;, एते (ete) - these;, बहुविधाः (bahu-vidhāḥ) - of many kinds;, शैलं (śailam) - the mountain;, शोभयन्ति (śobhayanti) - adorn;, महाप्रभाः (mahā-prabhāḥ) - greatly radiant ones;]
(White-black-cloud-like, having radiance equal to the rising sun, these of many kinds adorn the mountain, greatly radiant ones.)
These, resembling white and black clouds and possessing radiance like the rising sun, of various kinds, greatly illuminate and adorn the mountain. (03-155-82)
गन्धर्वाः सह कान्ताभिर्यथोक्तं वृषपर्वणा। दृश्यन्ते शैलशृङ्गेषु पार्थ किम्पुरुषैः सह ॥०३-१५५-८३॥
gandharvāḥ saha kāntābhiḥ yathoktaṃ vṛṣaparvaṇā। dṛśyante śailaśṛṅgeṣu pārtha kimpuruṣaiḥ saha ॥03-155-83॥
[गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - gandharvas; (celestial beings); सह (saha) - together with; along with; कान्ताभिः (kāntābhiḥ) - with beloved women; (by) beloveds; यथोक्तं (yathoktaṃ) - as described; as said; वृषपर्वणा (vṛṣaparvaṇā) - by Vṛṣaparvan; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; appear; शैलशृङ्गेषु (śailaśṛṅgeṣu) - on mountain peaks; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; O son of Pṛthā; किम्पुरुषैः (kimpuruṣaiḥ) - with kimpuruṣas; सह (saha) - with; along with;]
(Gandharvas together with beloved women, as described by Vṛṣaparvan, are seen on mountain peaks, O Pārtha, together with kimpuruṣas.)

[गीतानां (gītānāṃ) - of songs; of melodies; तलतालानां (talatālānāṃ) - of drums; of percussion instruments; यथा (yathā) - just as; as; साम्नां (sāmnāṃ) - of sāman chants; of (Sāma Vedic) hymns; च (ca) - and; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - resonance; sound; echo; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; manifoldly; भीम (bhīma) - terrible; fearful; immense; सर्वभूतमनोहरः (sarvabhūtamanoharaḥ) - enchanting to all beings; pleasing to all creatures;]
(Of songs, of drums, just as of hymns and the resonance, is heard in many ways, terrible, enchanting to all beings.)
Just as the sounds of songs, drums, and hymns are heard in many forms—a dreadful yet enchanting resonance to all beings. (03-155-84)
महागङ्गामुदीक्षस्व पुण्यां देवनदीं शुभाम्। कलहंसगणैर्जुष्टामृषिकिंनरसेविताम् ॥०३-१५५-८५॥
mahāgaṅgām udīkṣasva puṇyāṃ deva-nadīṃ śubhām। kalahaṃsa-gaṇair juṣṭām ṛṣikinnara-sevitām ॥03-155-85॥

व्यालैश्च विविधाकारैः शतशीर्षैः समन्ततः। उपेतं पश्य कौन्तेय शैलराजमरिंदम ॥०३-१५५-८७॥
vyālaiḥ ca vividhākāraiḥ śataśīrṣaiḥ samantataḥ| upetaṃ paśya kaunteya śailarāja-marindama ॥03-155-87॥
[व्यालैः (vyālaiḥ) - with serpents; च (ca) - and; विविधाकारैः (vividhākāraiḥ) - of various forms; शतशीर्षैः (śataśīrṣaiḥ) - with a hundred heads; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; उपेतं (upetam) - surrounded; पश्य (paśya) - behold; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; शैलराज (śailarāja) - king of mountains; मरिंदम (marindama) - O subduer of enemies;]

te prītamanasaḥ śūrāḥ prāptā gatimanuttamām। nātṛpyan parvatendrasya darśanena parantapāḥ ॥03-155-88॥
[ते (te) - they; प्रीतमनसः (prītamanasaḥ) - with joyful minds; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - having attained; गतिम् (gatim) - state; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassed; न (na) - not; अतृप्यन् (atṛpyan) - were satisfied; पर्वतेन्द्रस्य (parvatendrasya) - of the king of mountains; दर्शनेन (darśanena) - by the sight; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - scorchers of foes;]
(They, with joyful minds, heroes, having attained an unsurpassed state, not were satisfied by the sight of the king of mountains, scorchers of foes.)
Though the heroes with joyful minds had attained the unsurpassed state, the enemy-tormenters were not satisfied merely by seeing the king of mountains. (03-155-88)
उपेतमथ माल्यैश्च फलवद्भिश्च पादपैः। आर्ष्टिषेणस्य राजर्षेराश्रमं ददृशुस्तदा ॥०३-१५५-८९॥
upetamaṯha mālyaiśca phalavadbhiśca pādapaiḥ. ārṣṭiṣeṇasya rājarṣerāśramaṁ dadṛśustadā ॥03-155-89॥
[उपेतम् (upetam) - adorned; surrounded; अथ (atha) - then; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; च (ca) - and; फलवद्भिः (phalavadbhiḥ) - with fruit-bearing; च (ca) - and; पादपैः (pādapaiḥ) - with trees; आर्ष्टिषेणस्य (ārṣṭiṣeṇasya) - of Ārṣṭiṣeṇa; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Adorned then with garlands and with fruit-bearing trees, the hermitage of Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, the royal sage, they saw then.)

ततस्तं तीव्रतपसं कृशं धमनिसन्ततम्। पारगं सर्वधर्माणामार्ष्टिषेणमुपागमन् ॥०३-१५५-९०॥
tatas taṁ tīvra-tapasaṁ kṛśaṁ dhamani-santatam। pāragam sarva-dharmāṇām ārṣṭiṣeṇam upāgaman ॥03-155-90॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; तम् (tam) - him; तीव्रतपसम् (tīvra-tapasam) - of intense austerity; कृशम् (kṛśam) - emaciated; धमनि-सन्ततम् (dhamani-santatam) - veins prominent; पारगम् (pāragam) - one who has crossed over; सर्वधर्माणाम् (sarva-dharmāṇām) - of all dharmas; आर्ष्टिषेणम् (ārṣṭiṣeṇam) - Arṣṭiṣeṇa (proper name); उपागमन् (upāgaman) - approached;]
(Thereafter, him, of intense austerity, emaciated, veins prominent, one who has crossed over all dharmas, Arṣṭiṣeṇa, approached.)
After that, Arṣṭiṣeṇa, who had performed intense austerity, was emaciated, with prominent veins, and who had transcended all dharmas, was approached. (03-155-90)
