ततस्तानि महार्हाणि दिव्यानि भरतर्षभ। बहूनि बहुरूपाणि विरजांसि समाददे ॥०३-१५३-१॥
tatastāni mahārhāṇi divyāni bharatarṣabha। bahūni bahurūpāṇi virajāṃsi samādade ॥03-153-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तानि (tāni) - those; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - most precious; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; बहुरूपाणि (bahurūpāṇi) - of many forms; विरजांसि (virajāṃsi) - spotless; समाददे (samādade) - he accepted;]
(Then those most precious, divine, O bull among the Bharatas, many, of many forms, spotless things he accepted.)
Then he accepted those most precious, divine, many spotless objects of various forms, O bull among the Bharatas. (3-153-1)
ततो वायुर्महाञ्शीघ्रो नीचैः शर्करकर्षणः। प्रादुरासीत्खरस्पर्शः सङ्ग्राममभिचोदयन् ॥०३-१५३-२॥
tato vāyurmahāñśīghro nīcaiḥ śarkarakarṣaṇaḥ. prādurāsītkharasparśaḥ saṅgrāmamabhicodayan ॥03-153-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; महान् (mahān) - great; शीघ्रः (śīghraḥ) - swift; नीचैः (nīcaiḥ) - downwards; शर्करकर्षणः (śarkarakarṣaṇaḥ) - gravel-drawing; प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - arose; खरस्पर्शः (kharasparśaḥ) - harsh-touching; सङ्ग्रामम् (saṅgrāmam) - battle; अभिचोदयन् (abhicodayan) - impelling toward;]
(Then wind great swift downwards gravel-drawing arose harsh-touching impelling toward battle.)
Then a great, swift wind arose, blowing downward and sweeping gravel, its touch harsh, driving toward the battle. (03-153-2)
पपात महती चोल्का सनिर्घाता महाप्रभा। निष्प्रभश्चाभवत्सूर्यश्छन्नरश्मिस्तमोवृतः ॥०३-१५३-३॥
papāta mahatī ca ulkā sanirghātā mahāprabhā। niṣprabhaś ca abhavat sūryaḥ channa-raśmiḥ tamaḥ-vṛtaḥ ॥03-153-3॥
[पपात (papāta) - fell; महती (mahatī) - great; च (ca) - and; उल्का (ulkā) - meteor; सनिर्घाता (sanirghātā) - with thunderous sound; महाप्रभा (mahāprabhā) - of great brilliance; निष्प्रभश् (niṣprabhaḥ) - devoid of radiance; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; छन्नरश्मि: (channa-raśmiḥ) - his rays concealed; तमोवृतः (tamaḥ-vṛtaḥ) - covered by darkness;]
(A great meteor, with thunderous sound, of great brilliance, fell; and the sun became devoid of radiance, his rays concealed, covered by darkness.)
A great and brilliant meteor, accompanied by thunderous noise, fell; and the sun became dim, his rays hidden and shrouded in darkness. (03-153-3)
निर्घातश्चाभवद्भीमो भीमे विक्रममास्थिते। चचाल पृथिवी चापि पांसुवर्षं पपात च ॥०३-१५३-४॥
nirghātaś cābhavad bhīmo bhīme vikramam āsthite। cacāla pṛthivī cāpi pāṃsuvarṣaṃ papāta ca॥03-153-4॥
[निर्घातः (nirghātaḥ) - thunderbolt; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - occurred; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - terrible; भीमे (bhīme) - when Bhīma; विक्रमम् (vikramam) - valour; आस्थिते (āsthite) - having undertaken; चचाल (cacāla) - trembled; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पांसुवर्षम् (pāṃsuvarṣam) - rain of dust; पपात (papāta) - fell; च (ca) - and;]
(Thunderbolt and occurred, terrible, when Bhīma (was) having undertaken valour; trembled the earth also, and rain of dust fell and.)
A terrible thunderbolt occurred when Bhīma undertook valour; the earth trembled, and a rain of dust also fell. (03-153-4)
सलोहिता दिशश्चासन्खरवाचो मृगद्विजाः। तमोवृतमभूत्सर्वं न प्रज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥०३-१५३-५॥
salohitā diśaś cāsan kharavāco mṛgadvi jāḥ। tamovṛtam abhūt sarvaṃ na prajñāyata kiñcana॥03-153-5॥
[सलोहिता (salohitā) - reddened; (sa - with, lohitāḥ - red; plural or feminine singular, here describing directions); दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; (nominative plural); च (ca) - and; आसन् (āsan) - were; खरवाचः (kharavācaḥ) - harsh-voiced; (khara - harsh, vācaḥ - voiced; plural); मृगद्विजाः (mṛgadvi jāḥ) - animals and birds; (mṛga - animals/beasts, dvijāḥ - birds/dvija - literally 'twice-born'); तमोवृतम् (tamovṛtam) - covered by darkness; (tamasa - by darkness, vṛtam - covered); अभूत् (abhūt) - became; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; न (na) - not; प्रज्ञायत (prajñāyata) - was discerned; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(The directions were reddened, and the animals and birds were harsh-voiced. Everything became covered by darkness; not anything was discerned.)
The directions turned red, and the animals and birds cried out harshly. Everything became shrouded in darkness; nothing at all was visible. (03-153-5)
तदद्भुतमभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठः कोऽस्मानभिभविष्यति ॥०३-१५३-६॥
tad adbhutam abhiprekṣya dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। uvāca vadatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ ko 'smān abhibhaviṣyati॥03-153-6॥

(That wonderful (thing) having beheld, Dharmaputra Yudhiṣṭhira, said (to) the best of speakers: Who will overcome us? (03-153-6))
Beholding that extraordinary event, Dharmaputra Yudhiṣṭhira spoke to the foremost of speakers: Who will defeat us? (03-153-6)
सज्जीभवत भद्रं वः पाण्डवा युद्धदुर्मदाः। यथारूपाणि पश्यामि स्वभ्यग्रो नः पराक्रमः ॥०३-१५३-७॥
sajjībhavata bhadraṃ vaḥ pāṇḍavā yuddha-durmadāḥ। yathā-rūpāṇi paśyāmi svabhy-agro naḥ parākramaḥ ॥03-153-7॥
[सज्जीभवत (sajjībhavata) - be prepared; (you all); भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; well-being; वः (vaḥ) - to you (plural); पाण्डवा (pāṇḍavāḥ) - O Pāṇḍavas; युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddha-durmadāḥ) - recklessly-proud-in-battle; यथारूपाणि (yathā-rūpāṇi) - such forms; as (they) are; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; स्वभ्यग्रह् (svabhyagraḥ) - ahead-of-ourselves; superior to ourselves; नः (naḥ) - our; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - prowess;]
(Be prepared, auspiciousness to you, O Pāṇḍavas, who are recklessly proud in battle. Such forms I see—our prowess is ahead of ourselves.)
Be ready, good fortune to you, O Pāṇḍavas, proud warriors in battle. Just as I see things, our valor is surpassing itself. (03-153-7)
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजा वीक्षां चक्रे समन्ततः। अपश्यमानो भीमं च धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-१५३-८॥
evam-uktvā tato rājā vīkṣāṁ cakre samantataḥ। apaśyamānaḥ bhīmaṁ ca dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-153-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; राजा (rājā) - the king; वीक्षां (vīkṣām) - a look; observation; चक्रे (cakre) - made; performed; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around; on all sides; अपश्यमानः (apaśyamānaḥ) - not seeing; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Thus having spoken, thereafter the king made a look on all sides. Not seeing Bhīma and the king of dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Having said this, then the king surveyed all around. Not finding Bhīma, the righteous king Yudhiṣṭhira looked everywhere for him. (03-153-8)
तत्र कृष्णां यमौ चैव समीपस्थानरिंदमः। पप्रच्छ भ्रातरं भीमं भीमकर्माणमाहवे ॥०३-१५३-९॥
tatra kṛṣṇāṃ yamau caiva samīpasthānarindamaḥ। papraccha bhrātaraṃ bhīmaṃ bhīmakarmāṇam āhave ॥03-153-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇa; यमौ (yamau) - the twins (Yudhishṭhira and Nakula, but more accurately Nakula and Sahadeva, collectively called Yamāu, as sons of the Ashvins); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समीपस्थान (samīpasthān) - standing nearby; अरिंदमः (arindamaḥ) - conqueror of enemies; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - his brother; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; भीमकर्माणम् (bhīmakarmāṇam) - of mighty deeds; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(There, Kṛṣṇa and the twins indeed, the conqueror of enemies standing nearby, asked his brother Bhīma, of mighty deeds, in battle.)
There, Kṛṣṇa and the two brothers (the twins), while the conqueror of enemies stood nearby, asked his brother Bhīma, who was mighty in battle. (03-153-9)
कच्चिन्न भीमः पाञ्चालि किञ्चित्कृत्यं चिकीर्षति। कृतवानपि वा वीरः साहसं साहसप्रियः ॥०३-१५३-१०॥
kaccin na bhīmaḥ pāñcāli kiñcit kṛtyaṁ cikīrṣati। kṛtavān api vā vīraḥ sāhasaṁ sāhasapriyaḥ ॥03-153-10॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; पाञ्चालि (pāñcāli) - O Pāñcālī; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some; कृत्यं (kṛtyam) - action; चिकीर्षति (cikīrṣati) - desires to do; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; साहसं (sāhasam) - rash act; साहसप्रियः (sāhasapriyaḥ) - fond of daring;]
(Whether not Bhima, O Pāñcālī, some action desires to do. Has done also or the hero a rash act, fond of daring.)
O Pāñcālī, Bhima, who is fond of daring, does he wish to do something rash or has the hero already performed some daring act? (03-153-10)
इमे ह्यकस्मादुत्पाता महासमरदर्शिनः। दर्शयन्तो भयं तीव्रं प्रादुर्भूताः समन्ततः ॥०३-१५३-११॥
ime hy akasmād utpātā mahāsamaradarśinaḥ। darśayanto bhayaṃ tīvraṃ prādurbhūtāḥ samantataḥ॥03-153-11॥
[इमे (ime) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; उत्पाताः (utpātāḥ) - portents; महासमरदर्शिनः (mahāsamaradarśinaḥ) - signs of great battle; दर्शयन्तः (darśayantaḥ) - showing; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; प्रादुर्भूताः (prādurbhūtāḥ) - have appeared; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(These indeed suddenly portents signs of great battle showing fear intense have appeared on all sides.)
These signs, indeed, sudden portents of a great battle, have appeared on all sides, showing intense fear. (03-153-11)
तं तथा वादिनं कृष्णा प्रत्युवाच मनस्विनी। प्रिया प्रियं चिकीर्षन्ती महिषी चारुहासिनी ॥०३-१५३-१२॥
taṁ tathā vāadinaṁ kṛṣṇā pratyuvāca manasvinī। priyā priyaṁ cikīrṣantī mahiṣī cāruhāsinī ॥03-153-12॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; वादिनं (vāadinam) - speaking; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā); प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - answered; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - wise woman; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved (female); प्रियं (priyaṁ) - beloved (male); चिकीर्षन्ती (cikīrṣantī) - wishing to do; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; चारुहासिनी (cāruhāsinī) - with lovely smile;]
(Kṛṣṇā, the wise, thus answered him who was speaking, the beloved, wishing to do (for) her beloved, the queen with a lovely smile.)
Draupadī, the wise and beloved queen with a charming smile, answered him in this way, wishing to please her beloved. (03-153-12)
यत्तत्सौगन्धिकं राजन्नाहृतं मातरिश्वना। तन्मया भीमसेनस्य प्रीतयाद्योपपादितम् ॥०३-१५३-१३॥
yattat saugandhikaṃ rājann āhṛtaṃ mātariśvanā। tan mayā bhīmasenasya prītayā adya upapāditam ॥03-153-13॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; सौगन्धिकं (saugandhikam) - Saugandhika flower; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आहृतं (āhṛtam) - brought; मातरिश्वना (mātariśvanā) - by Mātariśvan (Wind god); तत् (tat) - that; मया (mayā) - by me; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; प्रीतया (prītayā) - for pleasing; अद्य (adya) - today; उपपादितम् (upapāditam) - offered;]
(Which that Saugandhika (flower), O king, brought by Mātariśvan— that by me, of Bhīmasena, for pleasing, today is offered.)
O king, the Saugandhika flower which was brought by Mātariśvan is today offered by me to please Bhīmasena. (3-153-13)
अपि चोक्तो मया वीरो यदि पश्येद्बहून्यपि। तानि सर्वाण्युपादाय शीघ्रमागम्यतामिति ॥०३-१५३-१४॥
api cokto mayā vīro yadi paśyed bahūny api. tāni sarvāṇy upādāya śīghram āgamyatām iti ॥03-153-14॥
[अपि (api) - also; or; indeed; च (ca) - and; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; said; मया (mayā) - by me; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; warrior; यदि (yadi) - if; पश्येत् (paśyet) - should see; may see; बहूनि (bahūni) - many (things); अपि (api) - also; even; तानि (tāni) - those; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; taking; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; आगम्यताम् (āgamyatām) - let (him) come; इति (iti) - thus; so;]
(Also and said by me, the hero, if he should see many (things) also, those all having taken, quickly let (him) come, thus.)
And further, I told the hero: 'If he should see many (things) also, let him take all of those and quickly come thus.' (03-153-14)
स तु नूनं महाबाहुः प्रियार्थं मम पाण्डवः। प्रागुदीचीं दिशं राजंस्तान्याहर्तुमितो गतः ॥०३-१५३-१५॥
sa tu nūnaṃ mahābāhuḥ priyārthaṃ mama pāṇḍavaḥ। prāgudīcīṃ diśaṃ rājaṃstānyāhartumito gataḥ॥03-153-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; प्रियार्थं (priyārtham) - for the sake of the dear; मम (mama) - my; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava (Arjuna); प्रागुदीचीं (prāgudīcīm) - eastern-northern; दिशं (diśam) - direction; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तानि (tāni) - those (objects); आहर्तुम् (āhartum) - to bring (to fetch); इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(He but indeed mighty-armed for the sake of the dear my Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) eastern-northern direction O king those to bring from here has gone.)
But indeed, O king, my son Arjuna, the mighty-armed Pāṇḍava, has surely gone from here to the north-eastern direction to fetch those things. (03-153-15)
उक्तस्त्वेवं तया राजा यमाविदमथाब्रवीत्। गच्छाम सहितास्तूर्णं येन यातो वृकोदरः ॥०३-१५३-१६॥
uktas tvaivaṁ tayā rājā yamāvidam athābravīt। gacchāma sahitās tūrṇaṁ yena yāto vṛkodaraḥ॥03-153-16॥
[उक्तः (uktaḥ) - said; त्व (tva) - indeed; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तया (tayā) - by her; राजा (rājā) - the king; यमाविदम् (yamāvidam) - to Yama-knower; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; गच्छाम (gacchāma) - let us go; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; येन (yena) - by which; यातः (yātaḥ) - gone; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vrikodara (Bhima);]
(Said indeed thus by her, the king to the Yama-knower then spoke: "Let us go together quickly, by which (way) Vrikodara (Bhima) has gone." (03-153-16))
When thus addressed by her, the king then spoke to the Yama-knower, "Let us quickly go together by the way by which Vrikodara (Bhima) has gone." (03-153-16)
वहन्तु राक्षसा विप्रान्यथाश्रान्तान्यथाकृशान्। त्वमप्यमरसङ्काश वह कृष्णां घटोत्कच ॥०३-१५३-१७॥
vahantu rākṣasā viprān yathā aśrāntān yathā akṛśān. tvam api amara-saṅkāśa vaha kṛṣṇām ghaṭotkaca ॥03-153-17॥
[वहन्तु (vahantu) - let them carry; राक्षसा (rākṣasāḥ) - the rākṣasas; विप्रान् (viprān) - the brāhmaṇas; यथा (yathā) - as; अश्रान्तान् (aśrāntān) - not fatigued; यथा (yathā) - as; अकृशान् (akṛśān) - not thin; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; अमरसङ्काश (amara-saṅkāśa) - like the immortals; वह (vaha) - carry; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (the lady named Kṛṣṇā or Draupadī); घटोत्कच (ghaṭotkaca) - O Ghaṭotkaca;]
(Let the rākṣasas carry the brāhmaṇas who are as not fatigued, as not thin; you also, O Ghaṭotkaca, like the immortals, carry Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī).)
Let the rākṣasas carry the brāhmaṇas who are neither weary nor emaciated; and you too, O Ghaṭotkaca, like the immortals, carry Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī). (03-153-17)
व्यक्तं दूरमितो भीमः प्रविष्ट इति मे मतिः। चिरं च तस्य कालोऽयं स च वायुसमो जवे ॥०३-१५३-१८॥
vyaktaṃ dūramito bhīmaḥ praviṣṭa iti me matiḥ। ciraṃ ca tasya kālo'yaṃ sa ca vāyusamo jave ॥03-153-18॥
[व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; evidently; दूरम् (dūram) - far; to a distance; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima (proper noun); प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; इति (iti) - thus; so; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; opinion; चिरम् (ciram) - long (time); च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अयम् (ayam) - this; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; वायुसमः (vāyusamaḥ) - equal to wind; जवे (jave) - in speed;]
(Evidently, Bhima from here has entered far, thus my thought. Long is also this time of his, and he is equal to wind in speed. (03-153-18))
It is clear to me that Bhima has gone a long way from here; he has been gone for a long time, and he is as swift as the wind. (03-153-18)
तरस्वी वैनतेयस्य सदृशो भुवि लङ्घने। उत्पतेदपि चाकाशं निपतेच्च यथेच्छकम् ॥०३-१५३-१९॥
tarasvī vainateyasya sadṛśo bhuvi laṅghane। utpated api cākāśaṃ nipatecca yathecchakam॥03-153-19॥
[तरस्वी (tarasvī) - vigorous; energetic; वैनतेयस्य (vainateyasya) - of Vinata's son (Garuḍa); सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - similar; like; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; लङ्घने (laṅghane) - in leaping; उत्पतेत् (utpatet) - he might leap up; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - into the sky; निपतेत् (nipatet) - he might descend; च (ca) - and; यथेच्छकम् (yathecchakam) - as he wishes; at will;]
(Vigorous, like Vinata's son in leaping on earth; he might even leap up into the sky and descend as he wishes.)
He was energetic, equal to Vinata's son (Garuḍa) in leaping on earth; he could leap up into the sky and descend at will. (03-153-19)
तमन्वियाम भवतां प्रभावाद्रजनीचराः। पुरा स नापराध्नोति सिद्धानां ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ॥०३-१५३-२०॥
tam anviyāma bhavatāṃ prabhāvād rajanī-carāḥ। purā sa na aparādhnoti siddhānāṃ brahma-vādinām ॥03-153-20॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अन्वियाम (anviyāma) - we pursue; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you; (genitive plural of bhavat) प्रभावात् (prabhāvāt) - due to power; रजनीचराः (rajanī-carāḥ) - night-wanderers; (i.e., demons) पुरा (purā) - formerly; सः (saḥ) - he; न (na) - not; अपराध्नोति (aparādhnoti) - offended; सिद्धानाम् (siddhānām) - of the perfected beings; ब्रह्मवादिनाम् (brahma-vādinām) - of those speaking of Brahman;]

We, the night-wanderers, pursue him because of your power. Formerly, he did not offend the perfected beings, the speakers of Brahman. (03-153-20)
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे हैडिम्बप्रमुखास्तदा। उद्देशज्ञाः कुबेरस्य नलिन्या भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१५३-२१॥
tathetyuktvā tu te sarve haiḍimbapramukhās tadā। uddeśajñāḥ kuberasya nalinyā bharatarṣabha ॥03-153-21॥
[तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having thus spoken; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; हैडिम्बप्रमुखाः (haiḍimbapramukhāḥ) - with Haiḍimba at the head; तदा (tadā) - then; उद्देशज्ञाः (uddeśajñāḥ) - knowing the location; कुबेरस्य (kuberasya) - of Kubera; नलिन्या (nalinyā) - with (the river) Nalinī; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Having thus spoken, but they all, with Haiḍimba at the head, then, knowing the location of Kubera, with the Nalinī, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, after thus speaking, all of them, headed by Haiḍimba, then, knowing the way to Kubera, set out along the Nalinī (river). (03-153-21)
आदाय पाण्डवांश्चैव तांश्च विप्राननेकशः। लोमशेनैव सहिताः प्रययुः प्रीतमानसाः ॥०३-१५३-२२॥
ādāya pāṇḍavāṁś caiva tāṁś ca viprān anekaśaḥ। lomaśenaiva sahitāḥ prayayuḥ prītamānasāḥ॥03-153-22॥
[आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तान् (tān) - those; च (ca) - and; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brahmins; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - numerous; लोमशेन (lomaśena) - with Lomaśa; एव (eva) - indeed; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - accompanied; प्रययुः (prayayūḥ) - they departed; प्रीतमानसाः (prītamānasāḥ) - with delighted minds;]
(Having taken the Pāṇḍavas and those Brahmins, numerous, together with Lomaśa indeed, accompanied, they departed, with delighted minds.)
Having gathered the Pāṇḍavas and those numerous Brahmins, all of them, accompanied by Lomaśa, departed with joyful hearts. (03-153-22)
ते गत्वा सहिताः सर्वे ददृशुस्तत्र कानने। प्रफुल्लपङ्कजवतीं नलिनीं सुमनोहराम् ॥०३-१५३-२३॥
te gatvā sahitāḥ sarve dadṛśus tatra kānane। praphulla-paṅkaja-vatīṃ nalinīṃ su-manoharām ॥03-153-23॥
[ते (te) - they; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; कानने (kānane) - in the forest; प्रफुल्लपङ्कजवतीं (praphulla-paṅkaja-vatīṃ) - bearing blooming lotuses; नलिनीं (nalinīṃ) - lotus pond; सुमनोहराम् (su-manoharām) - very beautiful;]
(They, having gone together all, saw there in the forest the lotus pond bearing blooming lotuses, very beautiful.)
All of them went together and saw there in the forest a very beautiful lotus pond full of blooming lotuses. (03-153-23)
तं च भीमं महात्मानं तस्यास्तीरे व्यवस्थितम्। ददृशुर्निहतांश्चैव यक्षान्सुविपुलेक्षणान् ॥०३-१५३-२४॥
taṁ ca bhīmaṁ mahātmānaṁ tasyāstīre vyavasthitam। dadṛśur nihatāṁś caiva yakṣān suvipulekṣaṇān ॥03-153-24॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; च (ca) - and; भीमं (bhīmaṁ) - terrible; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṁ) - great-souled; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; तीरे (tīre) - on the bank; व्यवस्थितम् (vyavasthitam) - situated; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यक्षान् (yakṣān) - yakṣas; सुविपुलेक्षणान् (suvipulekṣaṇān) - with very large eyes;]
(Him and terrible, great-souled, on her bank, situated. They saw indeed the slain yakṣas with very large eyes.)
They saw him, the terrible and great-souled one, standing on her bank; and also the yakṣas with very large eyes who had been slain. (03-153-24)
उद्यम्य च गदां दोर्भ्यां नदीतीरे व्यवस्थितम्। प्रजासङ्क्षेपसमये दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम् ॥०३-१५३-२५॥
udyamya ca gadāṃ dorbhyāṃ nadītīre vyavasthitam। prajāsaṅkṣepasamaye daṇḍahastam ivāntakam ॥03-153-25॥
[उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; च (ca) - and; गदां (gadām) - club; दोर्-भ्यां (dor-bhyāṃ) - with both arms; नदी-तीरे (nadī-tīre) - on riverbank; व्यवस्थितम् (vyavasthitam) - standing; प्रजा-सङ्क्षेप-समये (prajā-saṅkṣepa-samaye) - at the time of destruction of creatures; दण्ड-हस्तम् (daṇḍa-hastam) - with staff in hand; इव (iva) - like; अन्तकम् (antakam) - Yama (god of death);]
(And having raised the club with both arms, standing on the riverbank; at the time of destruction of creatures, like Antaka (Yama) with staff in hand.)
Having raised his club with both arms, he stood on the riverbank like Antaka (the god of death) with staff in hand at the time of destruction of living beings. (03-153-25)
तं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजस्तु परिष्वज्य पुनः पुनः। उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा कौन्तेय किमिदं कृतम् ॥०३-१५३-२६॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā dharmarājastu pariṣvajya punaḥ punaḥ। uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā kaunteya kimidaṃ kṛtam ॥03-153-26॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharma king; तु (tu) - but; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उवाच (uvāca) - said; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; किम् (kim) - what; इदम् (idam) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(Having seen him, but king of righteousness, having embraced (him) again and again, said with gentle speech: "Son of Kunti, what is this done?")
Seeing him, King Yudhishthira embraced him again and again and, with gentle words, said: "Son of Kunti, what is this that has been done?" (03-153-26)
साहसं बत भद्रं ते देवानामपि चाप्रियम्। पुनरेवं न कर्तव्यं मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥०३-१५३-२७॥
sāhasaṃ bata bhadraṃ te devānām api ca apriyam। punar evam na kartavyam mama cet icchasi priyam॥03-153-27॥
[साहसं (sāhasam) - rashness; courage; daring act; बत (bata) - indeed; truly; surely; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good; auspicious; ते (te) - to you; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अपि (api) - even; also; च (ca) - and; अप्रियं (apriyam) - unpleasant; disagreeable; पुनः (punar) - again; एवम् (evam) - thus; like this; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; should be done; मम (mama) - for me; of me; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; you desire; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasant; dear; favored;]
(Rashness, indeed, is good for you, but even for the gods it is unpleasant; again, such (a thing) should not be done, if you desire what is dear to me.)
Indeed, rashness may be good for you, but it is disagreeable even to the gods; do not act like this again, if you wish to please me. (03-153-27)
अनुशास्य च कौन्तेयं पद्मानि प्रतिगृह्य च। तस्यामेव नलिन्यां ते विजह्रुरमरोपमाः ॥०३-१५३-२८॥
anuśāsya ca kaunteyaṃ padmāni pratigṛhya ca। tasyāmeva nalinyāṃ te vijahrur amaropamāḥ॥03-153-28॥
[अनुशास्य (anuśāsya) - having instructed; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kuntī (Arjuna or Yudhiṣṭhira); पद्मानि (padmāni) - lotuses; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; च (ca) - and; तस्यामेव (tasyām eva) - in that very; नलिन्यां (nalinyām) - lake of lotuses; ते (te) - they; विजह्रुः (vijahrur) - sported; अमर-उपमाः (amara-upamāḥ) - equal to immortals (gods);]
(Having instructed and having received the lotuses, the son of Kuntī, and in that very lotus-lake, they sported, equal to the immortals.)
After instructing and having received the lotuses, the son of Kuntī; in that very lotus-lake, they sported like gods. (03-153-28)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु प्रगृहीतशिलायुधाः। प्रादुरासन्महाकायास्तस्योद्यानस्य रक्षिणः ॥०३-१५३-२९॥
etasminneva kāle tu pragṛhītaśilāyudhāḥ। prādurāsan mahākāyās tasyodyānasya rakṣiṇaḥ॥03-153-29॥
[एतस्मिन् एव (etasmin eva) - in this (very); काले (kāle) - time; तु (tu) - but; प्रगृहीतशिलायुधाः (pragṛhītaśilāyudhāḥ) - having taken up stone weapons; प्रादुरासन् (prādurāsan) - became manifest; महाकायाः (mahākāyāḥ) - of great bodies; तस्य (tasya) - of that; उद्यानस्य (udyānasya) - garden's; रक्षिणः (rakṣiṇaḥ) - guards;]
(In this very time but, having taken up stone weapons, became manifest great-bodied, of that garden's guards.)
But at that very moment, the great-bodied guards of that garden, having taken up stone weapons, appeared. (03-153-29)
ते दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजानं देवर्षिं चापि लोमशम्। नकुलं सहदेवं च तथान्यान्ब्राह्मणर्षभान् ॥ विनयेनानताः सर्वे प्रणिपेतुश्च भारत ॥०३-१५३-३०॥
te dṛṣṭvā dharmarājānaṃ devarṣiṃ cāpi lomaśam। nakulaṃ sahadevaṃ ca tathānyān brāhmaṇaṛṣabhān॥ vinayenānatāḥ sarve praṇipetuś ca bhārata॥03-153-30॥
[ते (te) - they; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; धर्मराजानम् (dharmarājānam) - Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira, king of dharma); देवर्षिम् (devarṣim) - the divine sage; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; लोमशम् (lomaśam) - Lomasha; नकुलम् (nakulam) - Nakulа; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; ब्राह्मणर्षभान् (brāhmaṇaṛṣabhān) - foremost of Brāhmaṇas; विनयेन (vinayena) - with humility; अनताः (anatāḥ) - bowed down; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रणिपेतुश् (praṇipetuḥ) - prostrated; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(They, having seen Dharmaraja, the divine sage also Lomasha, Nakula, Sahadeva and also other foremost Brāhmaṇas, with humility bowed down all, prostrated and, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having seen Dharmaraja, the divine sage Lomasha, Nakula, Sahadeva, and other foremost Brāhmaṇas, they all bowed down with humility and prostrated themselves. (03-153-30)
सान्त्विता धर्मराजेन प्रसेदुः क्षणदाचराः। विदिताश्च कुबेरस्य ततस्ते नरपुङ्गवाः ॥ ऊषुर्नातिचिरं कालं रममाणाः कुरूद्वहाः ॥०३-१५३-३१॥
sāntvitā dharmarājena praseduḥ kṣaṇadācarāḥ। viditāś ca kuberasya tatas te narapuṅgavāḥ॥ ūṣur nāticiraṃ kālaṃ ramamāṇāḥ kurūdvahāḥ॥03-153-31॥
[सान्त्विता (sāntvitā) - consoled; pacified; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); प्रसेदुः (praseduḥ) - became pleased; rejoiced; क्षणदाचराः (kṣaṇadācarāḥ) - the night-wanderers (yakṣas); विदिताः (viditāḥ) - known; recognized; च (ca) - and; कुबेरस्य (kuberasya) - of Kubera; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; after that; ते (te) - those; they; नरपुङ्गवाः (narapuṅgavāḥ) - the foremost of men; ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - dwelt; stayed; नातिचिरं (nāticiraṃ) - not for a very long (time); कालं (kālaṃ) - time; रममाणाः (ramamāṇāḥ) - enjoying; delighting; कुरूद्वहाः (kurūdvahāḥ) - O Kurudvaha (the upholders of the Kuru line);]
(Consoled by Dharmarāja, the night-wanderers became pleased. And being known to Kubera, thereafter those foremost of men dwelt not for a very long time, enjoying, O Kurudvaha.)
Consoled by Dharmarāja, the night-wanderers rejoiced. After being recognized by Kubera, the foremost of men stayed there for not very long, enjoying themselves, O Kurudvaha. (03-153-31)
