ततस्तामवसं प्रीतो रजनीं तत्र भारत। प्रसादाद्देवदेवस्य त्र्यम्बकस्य महात्मनः ॥०३-१६४-१॥
tatastām avasaṃ prīto rajanīṃ tatra bhārata। prasādād devadevasya tryambakasya mahātmanaḥ ॥03-164-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताम् (tām) - her (the); अवसं (avasaṃ) - I spent; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; तत्र (tatra) - there; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the grace; देवदेवस्य (devadevasya) - of the god of gods; त्र्यम्बकस्य (tryambakasya) - of the three-eyed one; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(Then, her I spent, pleased, the night there, O Bhārata, by the grace of the god of gods, of Tryambaka, the great-souled.)
Then, O Bhārata, by the grace of the great-souled Tryambaka, the god of gods, I spent that night there happily. (03-164-1)
व्युषितो रजनीं चाहं कृत्वा पूर्वाह्णिकक्रियाम्। अपश्यं तं द्विजश्रेष्ठं दृष्टवानस्मि यं पुरा ॥०३-१६४-२॥
vyuṣito rajanīṃ cāhaṃ kṛtvā pūrvāhṇikakriyām। apaśyaṃ taṃ dvijaśreṣṭhaṃ dṛṣṭavānasmi yaṃ purā॥03-164-2॥
[व्युषितः (vyuṣitaḥ) - having passed (the night); रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; पूर्वाह्णिकक्रियाम् (pūrvāhṇikakriyām) - morning rites (accusative singular); अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; तम् (tam) - him; द्विजश्रेष्ठम् (dvijaśreṣṭham) - best of twice-born (Brāhmaṇa); दृष्टवान् अस्मि (dṛṣṭavān asmi) - I have seen; यम् (yam) - whom; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Having passed the night and I, having performed the morning rites, saw him, the best of twice-born, whom I had formerly seen.)
After spending the night and performing the morning rites, I saw that best of Brāhmaṇas—the one whom I had seen before. (03-164-2)
तस्मै चाहं यथावृत्तं सर्वमेव न्यवेदयम्। भगवन्तं महादेवं समेतोऽस्मीति भारत ॥०३-१६४-३॥
tasmai cāhaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ sarvameva nyavedayam। bhagavantaṃ mahādevaṃ sameto'smīti bhārata॥03-164-3॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; यथावृत्तम् (yathāvṛttam) - as it happened; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; न्यवेदयम् (nyavedayam) - I reported; भगवन्तम् (bhagavantam) - the venerable; महादेवम् (mahādevam) - Mahādeva; समेतः (sametaḥ) - joined; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(To him and I as it happened all indeed I reported. The venerable Mahādeva joined I am, thus, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, I reported everything as it had happened to him, saying: 'I am joined with the venerable Mahādeva.' (03-164-3)
स मामुवाच राजेन्द्र प्रीयमाणो द्विजोत्तमः। दृष्टस्त्वया महादेवो यथा नान्येन केनचित् ॥०३-१६४-४॥
sa mām uvāca rājendra prīyamāṇo dvijottamaḥ। dṛṣṭas tvayā mahādevo yathā nānyena kenacit ॥03-164-4॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - best of the twice-born (brāhmaṇa); दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva (Great God, Śiva); यथा (yathā) - as; न (na) - not; अन्येन (anyena) - by another; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone;]
(He said to me, O king, being pleased, O best of the twice-born. Mahādeva has been seen by you as not by any other.)
He, being pleased, said to me, "O king, best of the twice-born, Mahādeva has been seen by you in a way that no one else has." (03-164-4)
समेत्य लोकपालैस्तु सर्वैर्वैवस्वतादिभिः। द्रष्टास्यनघ देवेन्द्रं स च तेऽस्त्राणि दास्यति ॥०३-१६४-५॥
sametya lokapālaistu sarvairvaivasvatādibhiḥ. draṣṭāsyanagha devendraṃ sa ca te'strāṇi dāsyati ॥03-164-5॥
[समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; लोकपालैः (lokapālaiḥ) - with the guardians of the worlds; तु (tu) - but; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; वैवस्वतादिभिः (vaivasvatādibhiḥ) - with Vaivasvata and others; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - you will see; अस्य (asya) - this; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; देवेन्द्रं (devendraṃ) - Indra, lord of the gods; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; दास्यति (dāsyati) - will give;]
(Having assembled with all the guardians of the worlds, with Vaivasvata and others, you will see, O sinless one, Indra; he himself and (also) will give you the weapons.)
Gathering with all the guardians of the worlds such as Vaivasvata, you will see Indra, O sinless one; and he will give you the weapons. (03-164-5)
एवमुक्त्वा स मां राजन्नाश्लिष्य च पुनः पुनः। अगच्छत्स यथाकामं ब्राह्मणः सूर्यसंनिभः ॥०३-१६४-६॥
evam-uktvā sa māṃ rājan nāśliṣya ca punaḥ punaḥ। agacchat sa yathā-kāmaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ sūrya-saṃnibhaḥ ॥03-164-6॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आश्लिष्य (āśliṣya) - having embraced; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - he went; सः (saḥ) - he; यथा-कामम् (yathā-kāmam) - as he wished; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; सूर्य-संनिभः (sūrya-saṃnibhaḥ) - having the appearance of the sun;]
(Thus having spoken, he me O king having embraced and again and again, he went as he wished, the brāhmaṇa having the appearance of the sun.)
O king, having thus spoken and having embraced me again and again, the brāhmaṇa, shining like the sun, went away as he wished. (03-164-6)
अथापराह्णे तस्याह्नः प्रावात्पुण्यः समीरणः। पुनर्नवमिमं लोकं कुर्वन्निव सपत्नहन् ॥०३-१६४-७॥
athāparāhṇe tasyāhnaḥ prāvät puṇyaḥ samīraṇaḥ। punarnavam imaṃ lokaṃ kurvan niva sapatnahan॥03-164-7॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; अपराह्णे (aparāhṇe) - in the afternoon; तस्य (tasya) - of that (day); अह्नः (ahnaḥ) - of the day; प्रावात् (prāvät) - blew forth; पुण्यः (puṇyaḥ) - auspicious; समीरणः (samīraṇaḥ) - wind; पुनर्नवम् (punarnavam) - again new; इमं (imaṃ) - this; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - making; इव (iva) - as if; सपत्नहन् (sapatnahan) - destroyer of rivals;]
(Then in the afternoon of that day an auspicious wind blew forth, as if making this world new again, destroyer of rivals.)
Then, in the afternoon of that day, an auspicious wind blew, as if it were making this world new again and vanquishing all rivals. (03-164-7)
दिव्यानि चैव माल्यानि सुगन्धीनि नवानि च। शैशिरस्य गिरेः पादे प्रादुरासन्समीपतः ॥०३-१६४-८॥
divyāni caiva mālyāni sugandhīni navāni ca। śaiśirasya gireḥ pāde prādurāsansamīpataḥ ॥03-164-8॥
[दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माल्यानि (mālyāni) - garlands; सुगन्धीनि (sugandhīni) - fragrant; नवानि (navāni) - fresh; च (ca) - and; शैशिरस्य (śaiśirasya) - of Śaiśira (the cool, or icy one); गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; पादे (pāde) - at the foot; प्रादुरासन् (prādurāsan) - appeared; समीपतः (samīpataḥ) - near;]
(Divine and indeed garlands fragrant fresh and of Śaiśira of the mountain at the foot appeared near.)
Divine, fresh, and fragrant garlands indeed appeared close by at the foot of the Śaiśira mountain. (03-164-8)
वादित्राणि च दिव्यानि सुघोषाणि समन्ततः। स्तुतयश्चेन्द्रसंयुक्ता अश्रूयन्त मनोहराः ॥०३-१६४-९॥
vāditrāṇi ca divyāni sughoṣāṇi samantataḥ। stutayaś ca indra-saṃyuktāḥ aśrūyanta manoharāḥ॥03-164-9॥
[वादित्राणि (vāditrāṇi) - musical instruments; च (ca) - and; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; सुघोषाणि (sughoṣāṇi) - pleasingly resounding; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; स्तुतयः (stutayaḥ) - praises; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रसंयुक्ताः (indra-saṃyuktāḥ) - joined with Indra; अश्रूयन्त (aśrūyanta) - were heard; मनोहराः (manoharāḥ) - charming;]
(Musical instruments and divine, pleasingly resounding on all sides; and praises joined with Indra were heard, charming.)
Divine musical instruments, resounding sweetly all around, and enchanting praises together with Indra were heard. (03-164-9)
गणाश्चाप्सरसां तत्र गन्धर्वाणां तथैव च। पुरस्ताद्देवदेवस्य जगुर्गीतानि सर्वशः ॥०३-१६४-१०॥
gaṇāś cāpsarasāṃ tatra gandharvāṇāṃ tathaiva ca । purastād devadevasya jagur gītāni sarvaśaḥ ॥03-164-10॥
[गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups; च (ca) - and; अप्सरसाम् (apsarasām) - of the apsarases; तत्र (tatra) - there; गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the gandharvas; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in front; देवदेवस्य (devadevasya) - of the God of gods; जगुः (jaguḥ) - sang; गीतानि (gītāni) - songs; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(Groups of the apsarases and also of the gandharvas there, in front of the God of gods, sang songs entirely.)
There, groups of apsarases and similarly gandharvas, in front of the God of gods, sang songs in every way. (03-164-10)
मरुतां च गणास्तत्र देवयानैरुपागमन्। महेन्द्रानुचरा ये च देवसद्मनिवासिनः ॥०३-१६४-११॥
marutāṃ ca gaṇās tatra devayānaiḥ upāgaman। mahendra-anucaraā ye ca deva-sadma-nivāsinaḥ॥03-164-11॥
[मरुतां (marutāṃ) - of the Maruts; च (ca) - and; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - hosts; तत्र (tatra) - there; देवयानैः (devayānaiḥ) - by divine vehicles; उपागमन् (upāgaman) - they approached; महेन्द्र (mahendra) - Mahendra; अनुचराः (anucarāḥ) - followers; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; देवसद्म (deva-sadma) - divine abode; निवासिनः (nivāsinaḥ) - inhabitants;]
(And the hosts of the Maruts there, by divine vehicles, approached; the followers of Mahendra and those who dwell in the divine abode.)
And there, the hosts of the Maruts approached on divine vehicles, along with Mahendra's attendants and all who dwell in the abode of the gods. (03-164-11)
ततो मरुत्वान्हरिभिर्युक्तैर्वाहैः स्वलङ्कृतैः। शचीसहायस्तत्रायात्सह सर्वैस्तदामरैः ॥०३-१६४-१२॥
tato marutvān haribhir yuktaiḥ vāhaiḥ svalankṛtaiḥ. śacī-sahāyaḥ tatra āyāt saha sarvaiḥ tadā amaraiḥ ॥03-164-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मरुत्वान् (marutvān) - the Marut-lord (Indra); हरिभिः (haribhiḥ) - with tawny ones; युक्तैः (yuktaiḥ) - yoked; वाहैः (vāhaiḥ) - vehicles; स्वलङ्कृतैः (svalankṛtaiḥ) - well-adorned; शचि-सहायः (śacī-sahāyaḥ) - with Śacī as helper; तत्र (tatra) - there; आयात् (āyāt) - arrived; सह (saha) - together with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; तदा (tadā) - then; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - with immortals (gods);]
(Then the Marut-lord, with vehicles yoked with tawny ones and well-adorned, with Śacī as helper, arrived there together with all the immortals then.)
Then Indra, the lord of the Maruts, arrived there with Śacī as his companion, mounted on well-adorned vehicles yoked with tawny horses, together with all the other gods. (03-164-12)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु कुबेरो नरवाहनः। दर्शयामास मां राजँल्लक्ष्म्या परमया युतः ॥०३-१६४-१३॥
etasminn eva kāle tu kubero naravāhanaḥ| darśayāmāsa māṃ rājan lakṣmyā paramayā yutaḥ ॥03-164-13॥
[एतस्मिन्नेव (etasmin eva) - in this very (time); काले (kāle) - time; तु (tu) - but; कुबेरो (kuberaḥ) - Kubera; (the god of wealth); नरवाहनः (naravāhanaḥ) - riding on men; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; मां (mām) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लक्ष्म्या (lakṣmyā) - with Lakṣmī; (goddess of fortune); परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युतः (yutaḥ) - joined;]
(In this very time but Kubera, riding on men, showed to me, O king, joined with supreme Lakṣmī.)
But at this very time, O king, Kubera, riding on men and joined by supreme Lakṣmī, appeared before me. (03-164-13)
दक्षिणस्यां दिशि यमं प्रत्यपश्यं व्यवस्थितम्। वरुणं देवराजं च यथास्थानमवस्थितम् ॥०३-१६४-१४॥
dakṣiṇasyāṃ diśi yamaṃ pratyapaśyaṃ vyavasthitam। varuṇaṃ devarājaṃ ca yathāsthānamavasthitam ॥03-164-14॥
[दक्षिणस्याम् (dakṣiṇasyām) - in the southern; दिशि (diśi) - direction; यमम् (yamam) - Yama; प्रत्यपश्यम् (pratyapaśyam) - I saw; व्यवस्थितम् (vyavasthitam) - settled; वरुणम् (varuṇam) - Varuṇa; देवराजम् (devarājam) - lord of gods; च (ca) - and; यथास्थानम् (yathāsthānam) - in proper place; अवस्थितम् (avasthitam) - standing;]
(In the southern direction, Yama I saw, settled. Varuṇa, the lord of gods, and, in his proper place, standing.)
I saw Yama settled in the southern direction. I also saw Varuṇa, the lord of the gods, standing in his proper place. (03-164-14)
ते मामूचुर्महाराज सान्त्वयित्वा सुरर्षभाः। सव्यसाचिन्समीक्षस्व लोकपालानवस्थितान् ॥०३-१६४-१५॥
te mām ūcur mahārāja sāntvayitvā surarṣabhāḥ। savyasācin samīkṣasva lokapālān avasthitān ॥03-164-15॥
[ते (te) - they; माम् (mām) - to me; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सान्त्वयित्वा (sāntvayitvā) - having consoled; सुरर्षभाः (surarṣabhāḥ) - the best among gods; सव्यसाचिन् (savyasācin) - Savyasācin (Arjuna, one who is ambidextrous); समीक्षस्व (samīkṣasva) - behold; लोकपालान् (lokapālān) - the guardians of the worlds; अवस्थितान् (avasthitān) - standing;]
(They, having consoled me, O great king, the best among gods, said: "O Savyasācin, behold the guardians of the worlds who stand here." (03-164-15))
O great king, the best of the gods consoled me and said: "O Savyasācin, look upon the assembled guardians of the worlds." (03-164-15)
सुरकार्यार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं दृष्टवानसि शङ्करम्। अस्मत्तोऽपि गृहाण त्वमस्त्राणीति समन्ततः ॥०३-१६४-१६॥
surakāryārthasiddhyarthaṃ dṛṣṭavān asi śaṅkaram. asmattopī gṛhāṇa tvam astrāṇīti samantataḥ ॥03-164-16॥
[सुरकार्यार्थसिद्ध्यर्थम् (surakāryārthasiddhyartham) - for the accomplishment of the purpose of the gods' task; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - you have seen; असि (asi) - you are; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - Śaṅkara; अस्मत्तः (asmattaḥ) - from me; अपि (api) - also; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; इति (iti) - thus; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - in all directions;]
(For the accomplishment of the gods' task you have seen Śaṅkara. Also from me, accept, you, weapons thus in all directions.)
For the success of the gods' purpose, you have seen Śaṅkara. Also, from me, accept all weapons in every direction. (03-164-16)
ततोऽहं प्रयतो भूत्वा प्रणिपत्य सुरर्षभान्। प्रत्यगृह्णं तदास्त्राणि महान्ति विधिवत्प्रभो ॥०३-१६४-१७॥
tato'haṃ prayato bhūtvā praṇipatya surarṣabhān। pratyagṛhṇaṃ tadāstrāṇi mahānti vidhivatprabho ॥03-164-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - ready; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed down; सुरर्षभान् (surarṣabhān) - to the best among the gods; प्रत्यगृह्णम् (pratyagṛhṇam) - I received; तत् (tat) - those; आस्त्राणि (āstrāṇi) - weapons; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - properly; प्रभो (prabho) - O master;]
(Then I, having become ready, having bowed down to the best among the gods, received those great weapons properly, O master.)
Then, O master, having become ready and after bowing to the foremost of the gods, I received those great weapons in the proper manner. (03-164-17)
गृहीतास्त्रस्ततो देवैरनुज्ञातोऽस्मि भारत। अथ देवा ययुः सर्वे यथागतमरिंदम ॥०३-१६४-१८॥
gṛhītāstras tato devair anujñāto'smi bhārata। atha devā yayuḥ sarve yathāgatam ariṃdama ॥03-164-18॥
[गृहीतास्त्रः (gṛhītāstraḥ) - having taken up weapons; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अथ (atha) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; ययुः (yayuḥ) - departed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यथा (yathā) - just as; आगतम् (āgatam) - they had come; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes;]
(Having taken up weapons, then I am permitted by the gods, O Bhārata. Then all the gods departed just as they had come, O subduer of foes. (03-164-18))
O Bhārata, having taken up the weapons, I was then permitted by the gods. Then, O subduer of foes, all the gods departed just as they had come. (03-164-18)
मघवानपि देवेशो रथमारुह्य सुप्रभम्। उवाच भगवान्वाक्यं स्मयन्निव सुरारिहा ॥०३-१६४-१९॥
maghavān api deveśo ratham āruhya suprabham। uvāca bhagavān vākyam smayann iva surāri-hā ॥03-164-19॥
[मघवान् (maghavān) - the mighty one; Indra; अपि (api) - also; देवेशः (deveśaḥ) - lord of the gods; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आारुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; सुप्रभम् (suprabham) - splendid; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; सुरारिहा (surāri-hā) - destroyer of the enemies of the gods;]
(Maghavan also, the lord of the gods, having mounted the splendid chariot, spoke words, the venerable one, smiling as if, destroyer of the enemies of the gods.)
Maghavan, the lord of the gods and destroyer of the enemies of the gods, having mounted his splendid chariot, spoke words while appearing to smile. (03-164-19)
पुरैवागमनादस्माद्वेदाहं त्वां धनञ्जय। अतः परं त्वहं वै त्वां दर्शये भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१६४-२०॥
puraiva-āgamanād-asmād-vedāham tvāṃ dhanañjaya। ataḥ paraṃ tvahaṃ vai tvāṃ darśaye bharatarṣabha ॥03-164-20॥
[पुरैव (puraiva) - previously indeed; आगमनात् (āgamanāt) - from arrival; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this (one); वेद (veda) - I know; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhanañjaya; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; परम् (param) - beyond (that); त्व (tva) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दर्शये (darśaye) - I show; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Previously indeed, from this one's arrival I know you, O Dhanañjaya; therefore beyond (that), I indeed show you, O bull among the Bharatas, you.)
O Dhanañjaya, even before this person's arrival, I knew you. Therefore, afterwards, O bull among the Bharatas, I truly reveal you. (03-164-20)
त्वया हि तीर्थेषु पुरा समाप्लावः कृतोऽसकृत्। तपश्चेदं पुरा तप्तं स्वर्गं गन्तासि पाण्डव ॥०३-१६४-२१॥
tvayā hi tīrtheṣu purā samāplāvaḥ kṛto'sakṛt। tapaś cedaṃ purā taptaṃ svargaṃ gantāsi pāṇḍava ॥03-164-21॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in sacred places; पुरा (purā) - formerly; समाप्लावः (samāplāvaḥ) - ablution; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; असकृत् (asakṛt) - not once (i.e., many times); तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - practiced; स्वर्गं (svargam) - heaven; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will go; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(By you indeed in sacred places formerly ablution was done many times; austerity too this formerly practiced; heaven you will go, O Pāṇḍava.)
Indeed, O Pāṇḍava, you have performed ablutions in sacred places many times before and practiced this austerity before; you will go to heaven. (03-164-21)
भूयश्चैव तु तप्तव्यं तपः परमदारुणम्। उवाच भगवान्सर्वं तपसश्चोपपादनम् ॥०३-१६४-२२॥
bhūyaś caiva tu taptavyaṃ tapaḥ paramadāruṇam। uvāca bhagavān sarvaṃ tapasaś copapādanam ॥03-164-22॥
[भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; तप्तव्यम् (taptavyam) - must be performed (as) penance; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; परम (parama) - supreme; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - very severe; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed Lord; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of (the) penance; च (ca) - and; उपपादनम् (upapādanam) - the bringing about;]
(Again and indeed but must be performed penance, the supreme severe penance. The Blessed Lord said all of penance and the bringing about.)
But again, the most severe penance must indeed be performed. The Blessed Lord then described all the means for carrying out penance. (03-164-22)
मातलिर्मन्नियोगात्त्वां त्रिदिवं प्रापयिष्यति। विदितस्त्वं हि देवानामृषीणां च महात्मनाम् ॥०३-१६४-२३॥
Mātalir man-niyogāt tvāṃ tridivaṃ prāpayiṣyati. Viditas tvaṃ hi devānām ṛṣīṇāṃ ca mahātmanām ॥03-164-23॥

(Mātali, by my command, you to heaven will cause to reach. Known you indeed to the gods, sages, and great souls.)
Mātali, by my command, will take you to heaven. Indeed, you are known to the gods, sages, and great souls. (03-164-23)
ततोऽहमब्रुवं शक्रं प्रसीद भगवन्मम। आचार्यं वरये त्वाहमस्त्रार्थं त्रिदशेश्वर ॥०३-१६४-२४॥
tato'ham abruvaṁ śakraṁ prasīda bhagavan mama। ācāryaṁ varaye tvāham astrārthaṁ tridaśeśvara ॥03-164-24॥

(Then I spoke to Śakra: "Be gracious, O revered one, my teacher I choose—you, I—for the knowledge of missiles, O lord of the gods." (03-164-24))
Then I said to Śakra: "Be gracious, O revered one. As my teacher I choose you for the knowledge of missiles, O lord of the gods." (03-164-24)

[क्रूरं (krūram) - cruel; कर्म (karma) - act; अस्त्रवित्तात् (astravittāt) - from the knower of missiles; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; यदर्थम् (yadartham) - for which purpose; अस्त्राणीप्सुः (astrāṇīpsuḥ) - desiring missiles; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तं (taṁ) - that; कामं (kāmaṁ) - desire; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - Pāṇḍava; आप्नुहि (āpnuhi) - attain;]
(Cruel act from the knower of missiles you will do, O scorcher of foes; for which purpose you desire missiles, that desire, O Pāṇḍava, attain.)
O Pāṇḍava, you will perform a cruel act from the knower of missiles, O scorcher of foes; attain that very desire for which you seek weapons. (03-164-25)

तानि दिव्यानि मेऽस्त्राणि प्रयच्छ विबुधाधिप। लोकांश्चास्त्रजितान्पश्चाल्लभेयं सुरपुङ्गव ॥०३-१६४-२७॥
tāni divyāni me'strāṇi prayaccha vibudhādhipa। lokāṃś cāstrajitān paścāl labheyaṃ surapuṅgava ॥03-164-27॥
[तानि (tāni) - those; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; मे (me) - to me; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; विबुधाधिप (vibudhādhipa) - lord of the gods; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; च (ca) - and; अस्त्रजितान् (astra-jitān) - conquered by weapons; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; लभेयम् (labheyam) - may I obtain; सुरपुङ्गव (surapuṅgava) - best of the gods;]
(Those divine weapons to me give, lord of the gods; the worlds also conquered by weapons, afterwards may I obtain, best of the gods.)
O lord of the gods, grant me those divine weapons, and afterwards may I obtain the worlds conquered by weapons, O best of the gods. (03-164-27)

[परीक्षार्थं (parīkṣārtham) - for the sake of examination; मया (mayā) - by me; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; उक्तं (uktam) - spoken; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - Dhanañjaya; (Arjuna; vocative); मम (mama) - my; आत्मजस्य (ātmajasya) - son's; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; सूपपन्नम् (sūpapannam) - well-appropriate; इदं (idam) - this; तव (tava) - for you;]
(For the sake of examination, by me this statement to you was spoken, O Dhanañjaya. My son's speech is well appropriate for you, this.)
O Dhanañjaya, this statement was spoken by me to you for the sake of testing. The words of my son are entirely suitable for you, this. (03-164-28)
शिक्ष मे भवनं गत्वा सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि भारत। वायोरग्नेर्वसुभ्योऽथ वरुणात्समरुद्गणात् ॥०३-१६४-२९॥
śikṣa me bhavanaṃ gatvā sarvāṇyastrāṇi bhārata। vāyoragnervasubhyo'tha varuṇātsamarudgaṇāt ॥03-164-29॥
[शिक्ष (śikṣa) - learn; मे (me) - for me; भवनं (bhavanaṃ) - the abode; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - from Vāyu; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - from Agni; वसुभ्यः (vasubhyaḥ) - from the Vasus; अथ (atha) - and; वरुणात् (varuṇāt) - from Varuṇa; समरुद्गणात् (samarudgaṇāt) - together with the troop of Maruts;]
(Learn, for me, having gone to the abode, all weapons, O Bhārata, from Vāyu, from Agni, from the Vasus, and from Varuṇa together with the troop of Maruts.)
O Bhārata, go to the abode and learn for me all the weapons from Vāyu, Agni, the Vasus, Varuṇa, and the troop of Maruts. (03-164-29)
साध्यं पैतामहं चैव गन्धर्वोरगरक्षसाम्। वैष्णवानि च सर्वाणि नैरृतानि तथैव च ॥ मद्गतानि च यानीह सर्वास्त्राणि कुरूद्वह ॥०३-१६४-३०॥
sādhyaṁ paitāmahaṁ caiva gandharvoragarakṣasām। vaiṣṇavāni ca sarvāṇi nairṛtāni tathaiva ca ॥ madgatāni ca yāniha sarvāstrāṇi kurūdvaha ॥03-164-30॥

O best of the Kurus, all the weapons of the Sādhyas, Pitāmaha, Gandharvas, serpents, Rākṣasas, Viṣṇu, and Nairṛta, as well as all the weapons that are here and belong to me, (are given to you). (03-164-30)

evam-uktvā tu māṃ śakrastatraivāntaradhīyata। athāpaśyaṃ hari-yujaṃ ratham aindram upasthitam ॥ divyaṃ māyāmayaṃ puṇyaṃ yat tat mātalinā nṛpa ॥03-164-31॥

(Thus having spoken but to me, Indra right there disappeared. Then I saw the chariot yoked with horses, Indra's, arrived—divine, composed of magic, auspicious, that one by Mātali, O king.)
Having thus spoken to me, Indra vanished on the spot. Then I saw Indra's chariot, yoked with horses, arrived—divine, magical, auspicious—the one brought by Mātali, O king. (03-164-31)
लोकपालेषु यातेषु मामुवाचाथ मातलिः। द्रष्टुमिच्छति शक्रस्त्वां देवराजो महाद्युते ॥०३-१६४-३२॥
lokapāleṣu yāteṣu mām uvāca atha mātaliḥ। draṣṭum icchati śakras tvām devarājo mahādyute ॥03-164-32॥
[लोकपालेषु (lokapāleṣu) - in the (other) guardians of the worlds; यातेṣu (yāteṣu) - when (they) had departed; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly glorious one;]
(When the guardians of the worlds had departed, then Mātali said to me: Śakra, the king of the gods, O greatly glorious one, desires to see you.)
When the guardians of the worlds had left, Mātali then said to me: "Śakra, the king of the gods, O greatly glorious one, wishes to see you." (03-164-32)
संसिद्धस्त्वं महाबाहो कुरु कार्यमनुत्तमम्। पश्य पुण्यकृतां लोकान्सशरीरो दिवं व्रज ॥०३-१६४-३३॥
saṃsiddhas tvaṃ mahābāho kuru kāryam anuttamam। paśya puṇyakṛtāṃ lokān saśarīro divaṃ vraja ॥03-164-33॥
[संसिद्धः (saṃsiddhaḥ) - accomplished; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कुरु (kuru) - do; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; पश्य (paśya) - see; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakṛtām) - of the merit-doers; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; सशरीरः (saśarīraḥ) - with body; दिवं (divam) - heaven; व्रज (vraja) - go;]
(Accomplished you, O mighty-armed, do unsurpassed action. See the worlds of the merit-doers; with body, go to heaven.)
You, accomplished one, O mighty-armed, perform the unsurpassed action. Behold the worlds of those who have performed meritorious deeds; with your body, go to heaven. (03-164-33)
इत्युक्तोऽहं मातलिना गिरिमामन्त्र्य शैशिरम्। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य समारोहं रथोत्तमम् ॥०३-१६४-३४॥
ity ukto' haṃ mātalinā girim āmantrya śaiśiram। pradakṣiṇam upāvṛtya samārohaṃ rathottamam ॥03-164-34॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken (to); अहम् (aham) - I; मातलिना (mātalinā) - by Mātali; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; शैशिरम् (śaiśiram) - Śaiśira (name of mountain); प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; उपावृत्य (upāvṛtya) - having returned (after); समारोहं (samāroham) - ascending; रथोत्तमम् (rathottamam) - the excellent chariot;]
(Thus, having been spoken to by Mātali, having addressed the mountain Śaiśira, having returned after circumambulation, (I) ascended the excellent chariot.)
Thus spoken to by Mātali, after addressing the mountain Śaiśira and circumambulating it, I ascended the excellent chariot. (03-164-34)
चोदयामास स हयान्मनोमारुतरंहसः। मातलिर्हयशास्त्रज्ञो यथावद्भूरिदक्षिणः ॥०३-१६४-३५॥
codayāmāsa sa hayān manomāra-taraṃhasaḥ। mātalir hayaśāstrajño yathāvad bhūri-dakṣiṇaḥ॥03-164-35॥
[चोदयामास (codayāmāsa) - he drove; he urged; he set in motion; स (sa) - he; हयान् (hayān) - horses; मनोमारुतरंहसः (manomāra-taraṃhasaḥ) - with swiftness exceeding mind and wind; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; हयशास्त्रज्ञः (hayaśāstrajñaḥ) - knower of the science of horses; यथावद् (yathāvad) - properly; duly; भूरिदक्षिणः (bhūri-dakṣiṇaḥ) - very skillful; highly dexterous;]
(He drove the horses, with speed surpassing mind and wind. Mātali, knower of the science of horses, very skillful, properly (did so).)
He, that is Mātali, the highly skillful and knowledgeable charioteer, properly drove the horses with a speed surpassing even mind and wind. (03-164-35)
अवैक्षत च मे वक्त्रं स्थितस्याथ स सारथिः। तथा भ्रान्ते रथे राजन्विस्मितश्चेदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१६४-३६॥
avaikṣata ca me vaktraṃ sthitasya atha sa sārathiḥ। tathā bhrānte rathe rājan vismitaḥ ca idam abravīt॥03-164-36॥
[अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - he looked; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; वक्त्रं (vaktraṃ) - face; स्थितस्य (sthitasya) - of (me) standing; अथ (atha) - then; स (sa) - he; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; भ्रान्ते (bhrānte) - as (the chariot was) turned; रथे (rathe) - in the chariot; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
(He looked at my face, as I was standing, then that charioteer, in that manner, as the chariot was turned, O king, astonished, and this said.)
And he looked at my face as I stood; then that charioteer, O king, as the chariot was turning, astonished, said this. (03-164-36)
अत्यद्भुतमिदं मेऽद्य विचित्रं प्रतिभाति माम्। यदास्थितो रथं दिव्यं पदा न चलितो भवान् ॥०३-१६४-३७॥
atyadbhutam idaṃ me 'dya vicitraṃ pratibhāti mām। yad āsthitaḥ rathaṃ divyaṃ padā na calito bhavān॥03-164-37॥
[अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - very wonderful; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; विचित्रम् (vicitram) - strange; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - seems; माम् (mām) - to me; यत् (yat) - because; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having mounted; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; पदा (padā) - with feet; न (na) - not; चलितः (calitaḥ) - moved; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Very wonderful this to me today strange seems to me; because having mounted the chariot divine with feet not moved you.)
This seems very wonderful and strange to me today, that although you have mounted the divine chariot, you have not moved your feet. (3-164-37)
देवराजोऽपि हि मया नित्यमत्रोपलक्षितः। विचलन्प्रथमोत्पाते हयानां भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१६४-३८॥
devarājo'pi hi mayā nityam atro'palakṣitaḥ। vicalan prathamotpāte hayānāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥03-164-38॥
[देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; नित्यम् (nityam) - constantly; अत्र (atra) - here; उपलक्षितः (upalakṣitaḥ) - observed; विचलन् (vicalan) - moving; प्रथमोत्पाते (prathamotpāte) - at the first leap; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of the horses; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
(devarājaḥ api hi mayā nityam atra upalakṣitaḥ vicalan prathamotpāte hayānām bharatarṣabha — the king of the gods also indeed by me constantly here was observed moving at the first leap of the horses, O best of Bharatas.)
O best of Bharatas, the king of the gods, too, was indeed constantly observed here by me, moving during the first leap of the horses. (03-164-38)
त्वं पुनः स्थित एवात्र रथे भ्रान्ते कुरूद्वह। अतिशक्रमिदं सत्त्वं तवेति प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-१६४-३९॥
tvaṁ punaḥ sthita evātra rathe bhrānte kurūdvaha। atiśakramidaṁ sattvaṁ taveti pratibhāti me ॥03-164-39॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्थित (sthita) - standing; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; भ्रान्ते (bhrānte) - when confused; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus; अतिशक्रम् (atiśakram) - very surpassing; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सत्त्वं (sattvaṁ) - strength; तव (tava) - your; इति (iti) - thus; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me;]
(You again standing indeed here on the chariot when confused, O best of the Kurus; this greatly surpassing strength of yours thus appears to me.)
Even as you stand here again upon the chariot in confusion, O best of the Kurus, this greatly surpassing strength of yours appears to me. (03-164-39)
इत्युक्त्वाकाशमाविश्य मातलिर्विबुधालयान्। दर्शयामास मे राजन्विमानानि च भारत ॥०३-१६४-४०॥
ity uktvā ākāśam āviśya mātalir vibudhālayān। darśayām āsa me rājan vimānāni ca bhārata ॥03-164-40॥

नन्दनादीनि देवानां वनानि बहुलान्युत। दर्शयामास मे प्रीत्या मातलिः शक्रसारथिः ॥०३-१६४-४१॥
nandanādīni devānāṃ vanāni bahulānyuta. darśayāmāsa me prītyā mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ ॥03-164-41॥
[नन्दन-आदीनि (nandanādīni) - Nandana and others; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; बहुलानि (bahulāni) - numerous; उत (uta) - indeed; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; मे (me) - to me; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; शक्र-सारथिः (śakrasārathiḥ) - charioteer of Śakra;]
(Nandana and other forests of the gods, numerous indeed, showed to me with affection Mātali, charioteer of Śakra.)
Mātali, the charioteer of Śakra, lovingly showed me the Nandana and other many forests of the gods. (03-164-41)
ततः शक्रस्य भवनमपश्यममरावतीम्। दिव्यैः कामफलैर्वृक्षै रत्नैश्च समलङ्कृताम् ॥०३-१६४-४२॥
tataḥ śakrasya bhavanam apaśyam amarāvatīm। divyaiḥ kāmaphalair vṛkṣaiḥ ratnaiś ca samalaṅkṛtām॥03-164-42॥

न तां भासयते सूर्यो न शीतोष्णे न च क्लमः। रजः पङ्को न च तमस्तत्रास्ति न जरा नृप ॥०३-१६४-४३॥
na tāṁ bhāsayate sūryo na śītoṣṇe na ca klamaḥ। rajaḥ paṅko na ca tamastatrāsti na jarā nṛpa॥03-164-43॥

(Not her illuminates the sun, not cold and heat, nor fatigue. Dust, mud, nor darkness there is, nor old age, O king.)
O king, there the sun does not illuminate her, nor do cold and heat or fatigue exist. There is neither dust nor mud nor darkness, nor is there old age. (03-164-43)
न तत्र शोको दैन्यं वा वैवर्ण्यं चोपलक्ष्यते। दिवौकसां महाराज न च ग्लानिररिंदम ॥०३-१६४-४४॥
na tatra śoko dainyaṃ vā vaivarṇyaṃ copalakṣyate. divaukasāṃ mahārāja na ca glānir ariṃdama ॥03-164-44॥

(Not there sorrow, misery or paleness and is observed. Of the dwellers of heaven, O great king, not and weakness, O subduer of enemies.)
There, neither sorrow nor misery nor paleness is observed among the dwellers of heaven, O great king; nor is there any weakness, O subduer of enemies. (03-164-44)
न क्रोधलोभौ तत्रास्तामशुभं च विशां पते। नित्यतुष्टाश्च हृष्टाश्च प्राणिनः सुरवेश्मनि ॥०३-१६४-४५॥
na krodhalobhau tatrāstāmaśubhaṃ ca viśāṃ pate. nityatuṣṭāś ca hṛṣṭāś ca prāṇinaḥ suraveśmani ॥03-164-45॥

(Not anger and greed there (let there be), nor inauspiciousness, O lord of the people. Always content and joyful living beings in the abode of the gods.)
O lord of the people, let there be neither anger nor greed nor anything inauspicious there. The living beings in the abode of the gods are always content and joyful. (03-164-45)
नित्यपुष्पफलास्तत्र पादपा हरितच्छदाः। पुष्करिण्यश्च विविधाः पद्मसौगन्धिकायुताः ॥०३-१६४-४६॥
nityapuṣpaphalās tatra pādapā haritacchadāḥ। puṣkariṇyaś ca vividhāḥ padmasaugandhikāyutāḥ ॥03-164-46॥
[नित्यपुष्पफलाः (nityapuṣpaphalāḥ) - having perennial flowers and fruits; तत्र (tatra) - there; पादपाः (pādapāḥ) - trees; हरितच्छदाः (haritacchadāḥ) - having green leaves; पुष्करिण्यः (puṣkariṇyaḥ) - lakes; च (ca) - and; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; पद्मसौगन्धिकायुताः (padmasaugandhikāyutāḥ) - abounding in lotuses and fragrant aquatic flowers;]
(There, trees having perennial flowers and fruits, (and) with green leaves; and various lakes abounding in lotuses and fragrant aquatic flowers.)

शीतस्तत्र ववौ वायुः सुगन्धो जीवनः शुचिः। सर्वरत्नविचित्रा च भूमिः पुष्पविभूषिता ॥०३-१६४-४७॥
śītastatra vavau vāyuḥ sugandho jīvanaḥ śuciḥ। sarvaratnavicitrā ca bhūmiḥ puṣpavibhūṣitā ॥03-164-47॥

(Cool there blew wind, fragrant, life-giving, pure. Adorned with all kinds of jewels and the earth decorated with flowers.)

मृगद्विजाश्च बहवो रुचिरा मधुरस्वराः। विमानयायिनश्चात्र दृश्यन्ते बहवोऽमराः ॥०३-१६४-४८॥
mṛga-dvijāś ca bahavo rucirā madhura-svarāḥ। vimāna-yāyinaś cātra dṛśyante bahavo'marāḥ॥03-164-48॥
[मृगद्विजाः (mṛga-dvijāḥ) - forest animals and birds; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; रुचिराः (rucirāḥ) - beautiful; मधुरस्वराः (madhura-svarāḥ) - having sweet voices; विमानयायिनः (vimāna-yāyinaḥ) - travelling in aerial chariots; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; अमराः (amarāḥ) - immortals (gods);]

tato'paśyaṃ vasūn rudrān sādhyāṃś ca sa-marud-gaṇān। ādityān aśvinau caiva tān sarvān pratyapūjayam॥03-164-49॥

(They me by strength, by fame, by brilliance and by power, and by weapons also, did acknowledge by victory in battle and.)
They recognized me for my strength, fame, brilliance, power, and weapons, as well as by my victories in battle. (03-164-50)
प्रविश्य तां पुरीं रम्यां देवगन्धर्वसेविताम्। देवराजं सहस्राक्षमुपातिष्ठं कृताञ्जलिः ॥०३-१६४-५१॥
praviśya tāṃ purīṃ ramyāṃ devagandharvasevitām। devarājaṃ sahasrākṣam upātiṣṭhaṃ kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥03-164-51॥
[प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; तां (tāṃ) - that; पुरीं (purīm) - city; रम्यां (ramyām) - beautiful; देवगन्धर्वसेविताम् (devagandharvasevitām) - attended by gods and gandharvas; देवराजं (devarājam) - the king of the gods; सहस्राक्षम् (sahasrākṣam) - the thousand-eyed (Indra); उपातिष्ठम् (upātiṣṭham) - I attended (approached, served); कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]
(Having entered that beautiful city attended by gods and gandharvas, the king of the gods, the thousand-eyed one, I attended, with joined palms.)

ददावर्धासनं प्रीतः शक्रो मे ददतां वरः। बहुमानाच्च गात्राणि पस्पर्श मम वासवः ॥०३-१६४-५२॥
dadāvardhāsanaṁ prītaḥ śakro me dadatāṁ varaḥ। bahumānācca gātrāṇi pasparśa mama vāsavaḥ॥03-164-52॥
[ददौ (dadau) - gave; अर्धासनं (ardhāsanam) - half-throne; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - being pleased; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); मे (me) - to me; ददतां (dadatām) - of those who give; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; बहुमानात् (bahumānaāt) - out of great respect; च (ca) - and; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; पस्पर्श (pasparśa) - touched; मम (mama) - my; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (another name for Indra);]
(Śakra, being pleased, gave me the half-throne; the best among givers; and out of great respect, Vāsava touched my limbs.)

तत्राहं देवगन्धर्वैः सहितो भुरिदक्षिण। अस्त्रार्थमवसं स्वर्गे कुर्वाणोऽस्त्राणि भारत ॥०३-१६४-५३॥
tatrāhaṁ devagandharvaiḥ sahito bhuridakṣiṇa. astrārtham avasaṁ svarge kurvāṇo'strāṇi bhārata ॥03-164-53॥

विश्वावसोश्च मे पुत्रश्चित्रसेनोऽभवत्सखा। स च गान्धर्वमखिलं ग्राहयामास मां नृप ॥०३-१६४-५४॥
viśvāvasoś ca me putraś citraseno 'bhavat sakhā। sa ca gāndharvam akhilaṃ grāhayāmāsa māṃ nṛpa॥03-164-54॥

ततोऽहमवसं राजन्गृहीतास्त्रः सुपूजितः। सुखं शक्रस्य भवने सर्वकामसमन्वितः ॥०३-१६४-५५॥
tato'ham avasaṁ rājan gṛhītāstraḥ supūjitaḥ। sukhaṁ śakrasya bhavane sarvakāmasamanvitaḥ ॥03-164-55॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; अवसं (avasaṁ) - dwelled; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गृहीतास्त्रः (gṛhītāstraḥ) - having received weapons; सुपूजितः (supūjitaḥ) - well-honored; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); भवने (bhavane) - in the palace; सर्वकामसमन्वितः (sarvakāmasamanvitaḥ) - endowed with all desires;]
(Then I dwelled, O king, having received the weapons, well-honored, happily, in Śakra’s palace, endowed with all desires.)
Then, O king, having received the weapons and being well-honored, I happily dwelled in Śakra's (Indra’s) palace, possessing every enjoyment. (03-164-55)
शृण्वन्वै गीतशब्दं च तूर्यशब्दं च पुष्कलम्। पश्यंश्चाप्सरसः श्रेष्ठा नृत्यमानाः परन्तप ॥०३-१६४-५६॥
śṛṇvan vai gītaśabdaṃ ca tūryaśabdaṃ ca puṣkalam। paśyaṃś cāpsarasaḥ śreṣṭhā nṛtyamānāḥ parantapa ॥03-164-56॥
[शृण्वन् (śṛṇvan) - hearing; वै (vai) - indeed; गीतशब्दं (gītaśabdam) - song-sound; च (ca) - and; तूर्यशब्दं (tūryaśabdam) - musical-instrument sound; च (ca) - and; पुष्कलम् (puṣkalam) - abundant; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; च (ca) - and; अप्सरसः (apsarasaḥ) - Apsarases; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - the best; नृत्यमानाः (nṛtyamānāḥ) - dancing; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(Hearing indeed the sound of song and the sound of musical instruments abundant, seeing and the best Apsarases dancing, O scorcher of foes.)
While listening to the abundant sounds of singing and instruments, and seeing the excellent Apsarases dancing, O subduer of enemies. (03-164-56)
तत्सर्वमनवज्ञाय तथ्यं विज्ज्ञाय भारत। अत्यर्थं प्रतिगृह्याहमस्त्रेष्वेव व्यवस्थितः ॥०३-१६४-५७॥
tat sarvam anavajñāya tathyaṃ vijñāya bhārata। atyarthaṃ pratigṛhyāham astreṣveva vyavasthitaḥ ॥03-164-57॥
[तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अनवज्ञाय (anavajñāya) - without disregarding; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - truth; विज्ज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - excessively; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रेषु (astreṣu) - among weapons; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यवस्थितः (vyavasthitaḥ) - am situated;]
(That all without disregarding truth having understood O Bhārata, excessively having accepted I indeed am situated among weapons.)
O Bhārata, having understood all that truth without disregarding anything, and having thoroughly accepted it, I am indeed established among the weapons. (03-164-57)
ततोऽतुष्यत्सहस्राक्षस्तेन कामेन मे विभुः। एवं मे वसतो राजन्नेष कालोऽत्यगाद्दिवि ॥०३-१६४-५८॥
tato'tuṣyata-sahasrākṣas-tena kāmena me vibhuḥ। evaṃ me vasato rājann-eṣa kālo'tyagād-divi ॥03-164-58॥
[ततः (tataḥ) (tataḥ) - then; अतुर्ष्यत् (atuṣyat) (atuṣyat) - was satisfied; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) (sahasrākṣaḥ) - thousand-eyed (Indra); तेन (tena) (tena) - by that; कामेन (kāmena) (kāmena) - desire; मे (me) (me) - my; विभुः (vibhuḥ) (vibhuḥ) - the lord; एवं (evaṃ) (evaṃ) - thus; मे (me) (me) - for me; वसतः (vasataḥ) (vasataḥ) - living; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; एषः (eṣaḥ) (eṣaḥ) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) (kālaḥ) - time; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) (atyagāt) - passed; दिवि (divi) (divi) - in heaven;]
(Then sahasrākṣa (the thousand-eyed lord; Indra) was satisfied by that desire of mine. Thus, O king, for me dwelling here, this time passed in heaven.)
Then Indra, the thousand-eyed Lord, was satisfied with that desire of mine. In this way, O king, as I dwelled here, this period passed for me in heaven. (03-164-58)
