yathāgataṃ gate śakre bhrātṛbhiḥ saha saṅgataḥ। kṛṣṇayā caiva bībhatsur dharmaputram apūjayat ॥03-163-1॥
[यथागतं (yathāgatam) - as (he) had come; गते (gate) - when (he) had gone; शक्रे (śakre) - Śakra (Indra); भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (his) brothers; सह (saha) - together with; सङ्गतः (saṅgataḥ) - having assembled; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); धर्मपुत्रम् (dharmaputram) - Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira); अपूजयत् (apūjayat) - honored;]
(As (he) had come, when Śakra had gone, having assembled together with (his) brothers, Bībhatsu (Arjuna), with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) also, honored Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira).)
When Indra had gone, Arjuna, having gathered together with his brothers and also with Draupadī, honored Yudhiṣṭhira. (03-163-1)
अभिवादयमानं तु मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय पाण्डवम्। हर्षगद्गदया वाचा प्रहृष्टोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१६३-२॥
abhivādayamānaṃ tu mūrdhnyupāghrāya pāṇḍavam। harṣagadgadayā vācā prahṛṣṭo'rjunam abravīt ॥03-163-2॥

कथमर्जुन कालोऽयं स्वर्गे व्यतिगतस्तव। कथं चास्त्राण्यवाप्तानि देवराजश्च तोषितः ॥०३-१६३-३॥
katham arjuna kālo'yaṃ svarge vyatigataḥ tava। kathaṃ cāstrāṇy avāptāni devarājaś ca toṣitaḥ ॥03-163-3॥

(How, Arjuna, did this time in heaven pass for you? And how were the weapons obtained, and was the king of gods pleased?)
How, Arjuna, did this period in heaven pass for you? And how did you obtain the weapons, and was the king of gods pleased? (03-163-3)
सम्यग्वा ते गृहीतानि कच्चिदस्त्राणि भारत। कच्चित्सुराधिपः प्रीतो रुद्रश्चास्त्राण्यदात्तव ॥०३-१६३-४॥
samyagvā te gṛhītāni kaccidastrāṇi bhārata। kaccitsurādhipaḥ prīto rudraścāstrāṇyadāttava ॥03-163-4॥

(Properly or your have been received, whether the weapons, O Bhārata. Whether lord of gods is pleased, Rudra and weapons gave to you.)
O Bhārata, have you properly received the weapons? Is the lord of gods pleased, and has Rudra given you the weapons? (03-163-4)
यथा दृष्टश्च ते शक्रो भगवान्वा पिनाकधृक्। यथा चास्त्राण्यवाप्तानि यथा चाराधितश्च ते ॥०३-१६३-५॥
yathā dṛṣṭaś ca te śakro bhagavān vā pinākadhṛk। yathā cāstrāṇy avāptāni yathā cārādhitaś ca te ॥03-163-5॥

(As Indra, seen by you, and as the blessed (or Śiva, the wielder of Pināka), and as the weapons have been obtained, and as (he) has been worshipped by you.)
As Indra was seen by you, as the blessed Lord or the wielder of Pināka, as the weapons were obtained, and as he was worshipped by you. (03-163-5)
यथोक्तवांस्त्वां भगवाञ्शतक्रतुररिंदम। कृतप्रियस्त्वयास्मीति तच्च ते किं प्रियं कृतम् ॥ एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण महाद्युते ॥०३-१६३-६॥

(As said you the revered Śatakratu, destroyer of enemies. Desire-fulfilled by you I am, thus; and that, of you, what dear thing was done. This I wish I to hear in detail, O greatly radiant one. (03-163-6))
O destroyer of enemies, as you have said, the venerable Śatakratu (Indra) had his wish fulfilled by you. What dear thing did you do for him? This I wish to hear in detail, O greatly radiant one. (03-163-6)
यथा तुष्टो महादेवो देवराजश्च तेऽनघ। यच्चापि वज्रपाणेस्ते प्रियं कृतमरिंदम ॥ एतदाख्याहि मे सर्वमखिलेन धनञ्जय ॥०३-१६३-७॥
yathā tuṣṭo mahādevo devarājaś ca te' nagha। yac cāpi vajrapāṇes te priyaṃ kṛtam ariṃdama ॥ etad ākhyāhi me sarvam akhilena dhanañjaya ॥03-163-7॥

(Just as Mahādeva and the king of gods were pleased with you, O sinless one, and what also (was) the dear thing done to you by the wielder of the thunderbolt, O subduer of foes, this tell me all entirely, O Dhanañjaya.)
O Dhanañjaya, tell me entirely how Mahādeva and the king of gods were pleased with you, O sinless one, and also what dear act was done to you by the wielder of the thunderbolt, O subduer of foes. (03-163-7)

śṛṇu hanta mahārāja vidhinā yena dṛṣṭavān। śatakratum ahaṁ devaṁ bhagavantaṁ ca śaṅkaram ॥03-163-8॥

(Hear indeed, O great king, by means by which I have seen Indra, I the god, the blessed one, and Śaṅkara.)
O great king, listen indeed—by the means by which I saw Indra, the god, the blessed one, and Śaṅkara. (03-163-8)
विद्यामधीत्य तां राजंस्त्वयोक्तामरिमर्दन। भवता च समादिष्टस्तपसे प्रस्थितो वनम् ॥०३-१६३-९॥
vidyām adhītya tāṃ rājañ tvayoktām arimardana। bhavatā ca samādiṣṭas tapase praṣṭhito vanam॥03-163-9॥
[विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge (accusative singular); अधीत्य (adhītya) - having studied; तां (tāṃ) - that; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्ताम् (uktām) - spoken; अरिमर्दन (arimardana) - O destroyer of enemies; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; च (ca) - and; समादिष्टः (samādiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; प्रस्थितः (praṣṭhitaḥ) - departed; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest;]
(Having studied that knowledge, O king, O destroyer of enemies, spoken by you, and instructed by you, (he) departed to the forest for austerity.)

भृगुतुङ्गमथो गत्वा काम्यकादास्थितस्तपः। एकरात्रोषितः कञ्चिदपश्यं ब्राह्मणं पथि ॥०३-१६३-१०॥
bhṛgutungam atho gatvā kāmyakād āsthitaḥ tapaḥ। ekarātroṣitaḥ kañcid apaśyaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ pathi ॥03-163-10॥
[भृगुतुङ्गम् (bhṛgutungam) - to Bhṛgutunga (a place); अथ (atha) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; काम्यकात् (kāmyakāt) - from Kāmyaka (forest); आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; एकरात्र-उषितः (ekarātra-uṣitaḥ) - having dwelt for one night; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - a certain; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - a Brāhmaṇa; पथि (pathi) - on the path;]
(Having gone to Bhṛgutunga, then, from Kāmyaka, having undertaken austerity, having dwelt one night, I saw a certain Brāhmaṇa on the path.)
After going to Bhṛgutunga from Kāmyaka and undertaking austerities, having stayed there for one night, I saw a certain Brāhmaṇa on the path. (03-163-10)
स मामपृच्छत्कौन्तेय क्वासि गन्ता ब्रवीहि मे। तस्मा अवितथं सर्वमब्रुवं कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-१६३-११॥
sa mām apṛcchat kaunteya kvā asi gantā bravīhi me. tasmā avitatthaṃ sarvam abruvaṃ kurunandana ॥03-163-11॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; क्व (kva) - where; असि (asi) - are (you); गन्ता (gantā) - intending to go; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - say; मे (me) - to me; तस्मा (tasmā) - to him; अवितथं (avitattham) - without untruth; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(He asked me, O son of Kunti, "Where are (you) intending to go? Say to me." To him, without untruth, all I spoke, O delight of the Kurus.)
He asked me, O son of Kunti, "Where are you going? Tell me." To him, O delight of the Kurus, I spoke everything truthfully. (03-163-11)
स तथ्यं मम तच्छ्रुत्वा ब्राह्मणो राजसत्तम। अपूजयत मां राजन्प्रीतिमांश्चाभवन्मयि ॥०३-१६३-१२॥
sa tatt hyaṁ mama tac chrutvā brāhmaṇo rājasattama। apūjayat māṁ rājan prītimāṁś cābhavan mayi ॥03-163-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तथ्यं (tathyaṁ) - truth; मम (mama) - my; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brahmin; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; अपूजयत् (apūjayat) - honored; माम् (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - joyful; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मयि (mayi) - towards me;]
(He, having heard that truth of mine, O best of kings, the Brahmin honored me, O king, and became joyful towards me.)
O best of kings, when the Brahmin heard that truth of mine, he honored me and became pleased with me. (03-163-12)
ततो मामब्रवीत्प्रीतस्तप आतिष्ठ भारत। तपस्वी नचिरेण त्वं द्रक्ष्यसे विबुधाधिपम् ॥०३-१६३-१३॥
tato mām abravīt prītaḥ tapa ātiṣṭha bhārata। tapasvī nacireṇa tvaṃ drakṣyase vibudhādhipam ॥03-163-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; तप (tapa) - austerity; आतिष्ठ (ātiṣṭha) - undertake; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; नचिरेण (nacireṇa) - not in a long time; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - will see; विबुधाधिपम् (vibudhādhipam) - lord of the gods;]
(Then, pleased, he said to me, "Undertake austerity, O Bharata. As an ascetic, not in a long time, you will see the lord of the gods." (03-163-13))
Then, being pleased, he said to me, "O Bharata, undertake austerity. As an ascetic, you will soon see the lord of the gods." (03-163-13)
ततोऽहं वचनात्तस्य गिरिमारुह्य शैशिरम्। तपोऽतप्यं महाराज मासं मूलफलाशनः ॥०३-१६३-१४॥
tato'haṃ vacanāttasya girimāruhya śaiśiram। tapo'tapyaṃ mahārāja māsaṃ mūlaphalāśanaḥ ॥03-163-14॥

(Then I, from his words, having ascended the Śaiśira mountain, O great king, practiced austerities for a month, subsisting on roots and fruits.)

द्वितीयश्चापि मे मासो जलं भक्षयतो गतः। निराहारस्तृतीयेऽथ मासे पाण्डवनन्दन ॥०३-१६३-१५॥
dvitīyaś cāpi me māso jalaṃ bhakṣayato gataḥ। nirāhāras tṛtīye 'tha māse pāṇḍavanandana ॥03-163-15॥
[द्वितीयः (dvitīyaḥ) - second (masculine nominative singular); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मे (me) - my; मासः (māsaḥ) - month; जलं (jalaṃ) - water; भक्षयतः (bhakṣayataḥ) - of (me) who was drinking (participle, genitive singular masculine); गतः (gataḥ) - passed; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; तृतीये (tṛtīye) - in the third; अथ (atha) - then; मासे (māse) - month; पाण्डवनन्दन (pāṇḍavanandana) - O delight of the Pāṇḍavas;]
(And also my second month, while subsisting on water, has passed. In the third month, O delight of the Pāṇḍavas, (I was) without food.)
And my second month also passed while I was living on water. Then, in the third month, O joy of the Pāṇḍavas, I was without food. (03-163-15)
ऊर्ध्वबाहुश्चतुर्थं तु मासमस्मि स्थितस्तदा। न च मे हीयते प्राणस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०३-१६३-१६॥
ūrdhvabāhuś caturthaṃ tu māsam asmi sthitas tadā। na ca me hīyate prāṇas tad adbhutam ivābhavat ॥03-163-16॥
[ऊर्ध्वबाहुः (ūrdhvabāhuḥ) - with raised arms; चतुर्थम् (caturtham) - the fourth; तु (tu) - but; मासम् (māsam) - month; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; हीयते (hīyate) - is diminished; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonder; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(With raised arms, the fourth but month I am standing then; nor and my is diminished life, that wonder as if became.)
With raised arms, I stood then for the fourth month; and yet my life was not diminished—that seemed like a wonder. (03-163-16)
चतुर्थे समभिक्रान्ते प्रथमे दिवसे गते। वराहसंस्थितं भूतं मत्समीपमुपागमत् ॥०३-१६३-१७॥
caturthe samabhikrānte prathame divase gate. varāhasaṃsthitaṃ bhūtaṃ matsamīpam upāgamat ॥03-163-17॥
[चतुर्थे (caturthe) - on the fourth; समभिक्रान्ते (samabhikrānte) - having completely passed; प्रथमे (prathame) - in the first; दिवसे (divase) - day; गते (gate) - having passed; वराहसंस्थितं (varāhasaṃsthitam) - assuming the form of a boar; भूतं (bhūtam) - being; मत्समीपम् (matsamīpam) - near me; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached;]
(On the fourth, having completely passed the first day, a being assuming the form of a boar approached near me.)
When the fourth (day) had come, after the first day had passed, a being in the form of a boar approached me. (03-163-17)
निघ्नन्प्रोथेन पृथिवीं विलिखंश्चरणैरपि। संमार्जञ्जठरेणोर्वीं विवर्तंश्च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥०३-१६३-१८॥
nighnan prothena pṛthivīṃ vilikhaṃś caraṇair api। saṃmārjan jaṭhareṇa urvīṃ vivartaṃś ca muhur muhuḥ॥03-163-18॥
[निघ्नन् (nighnan) - striking; प्रोथेन (prothena) - with the snout; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; विलिखन् (vilikhan) - scratching; चरणैः (caraṇaiḥ) - with (his) feet; अपि (api) - also; संमार्जन् (saṃmārjan) - sweeping; जठरेण (jaṭhareṇa) - with (his) belly; उर्वीं (urvīṃ) - the ground; विवर्तन् (vivartan) - rolling; च (ca) - and; मuhur muhuḥ (muhur muhuḥ) - again and again;]
(Striking with the snout the earth, scratching also with (his) feet, sweeping the ground with (his) belly, and rolling again and again.)
He struck the earth with his snout, scratched it with his feet, swept the ground with his belly, and rolled about over and over again. (03-163-18)
अनु तस्यापरं भूतं महत्कैरातसंस्थितम्। धनुर्बाणासिमत्प्राप्तं स्त्रीगणानुगतं तदा ॥०३-१६३-१९॥
anu tasyāparaṃ bhūtaṃ mahat-kairātasaṃsthitam। dhanur-bāṇāsimat-prāptaṃ strīgaṇānugataṃ tadā ॥03-163-19॥

(After him, another being, great, situated among hunters, furnished with bow, arrow, sword, obtained, followed by a group of women, then.)
After him, then there appeared another great being, situated among hunters, furnished with bow, arrow, and sword, attended by a group of women. (03-163-19)
ततोऽहं धनुरादाय तथाक्षय्यौ महेषुधी। अताडयं शरेणाथ तद्भूतं लोमहर्षणम् ॥०३-१६३-२०॥
tato'haṃ dhanur ādāya tathākṣayyau maheṣudhī. atāḍayaṃ śareṇātha tadbhūtaṃ lomaharṣaṇam ॥03-163-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then;“ अहम् (aham) - I;“ धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow;“ आदाय (ādāya) - having taken;“ तथा (tathā) - in that manner;“ अक्षय्यौ (akṣayyau) - both inexhaustible (dual);“ महेषुधी (maheṣudhī) - great arrows;“ अताडयम् (atāḍayam) - I struck;“ शरेण (śareṇa) - with an arrow;“ अथ (atha) - then;“ तत् (tat) - that;“ भूतम् (bhūtam) - being;“ लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - causing hair to stand on end;“;]
(Then I, having taken the bow, and in that manner the two inexhaustible great arrows, struck (it) with an arrow, then that being causing hair to stand on end.)
Then I took my bow, and, in that manner, the two inexhaustible great arrows, and struck that terrifying being with an arrow. (03-163-20)
युगपत्तत्किरातश्च विकृष्य बलवद्धनुः। अभ्याजघ्ने दृढतरं कम्पयन्निव मे मनः ॥०३-१६३-२१॥
yugapattat-kirātaś ca vikṛṣya balavad dhanuḥ। abhyājaghne dṛḍhataraṃ kampayann iva me manaḥ॥03-163-21॥
[युगपत् (yugapat) - simultaneously; तत् (tat) - that; किरातः (kirātaḥ) - Kirāta (the hunter); च (ca) - and; विकृष्य (vikṛṣya) - pulling back; बलवत् (balavat) - with force; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; अभ्याजघ्ने (abhyājaghne) - struck against; दृढतरं (dṛḍhataraṃ) - very firmly; कम्पयन् (kampayan) - shaking; इव (iva) - as if; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Simultaneously, that Kirāta, pulling back the powerful bow, struck very firmly, as if shaking my mind.)
At the same instant, that Kirāta pulled back the strong bow and struck with such force that it seemed as if my mind itself was shaken. (03-163-21)
स तु मामब्रवीद्राजन्मम पूर्वपरिग्रहः। मृगयाधर्ममुत्सृज्य किमर्थं ताडितस्त्वया ॥०३-१६३-२२॥
sa tu mām abravīd rājan mama pūrva-parigrahaḥ. mṛgayā-dharmam utsṛjya kimartham tāḍitaḥ tvayā ॥03-163-22॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मम (mama) - my; पूर्वपरिग्रहः (pūrva-parigrahaḥ) - former possession; मृगया (mṛgayā) - hunting; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteous duty; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; ताडितः (tāḍitaḥ) - struck; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(He but to me said O king my former possession hunting righteous duty abandoning for what reason struck by you.)
But he said to me, "O king, having abandoned the righteous duty of hunting, for what reason have you struck my former possession by you?" (03-163-22)
एष ते निशितैर्बाणैर्दर्पं हन्मि स्थिरो भव। स वर्ष्मवान्महाकायस्ततो मामभ्यधावत ॥०३-१६३-२३॥
eṣa te niśitair bāṇair darpaṃ hanmi sthiro bhava। sa varṣmavān mahākāyas tato mām abhyadhāvata ॥03-163-23॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - your; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; दर्पं (darpaṃ) - pride; हन्मि (hanmi) - I strike; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - firm; भव (bhava) - be; स (sa) - he; वर्ष्मवान् (varṣmavān) - of mighty stature; महाकायः (mahākāyaḥ) - great-bodied; ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - rushed towards;]
(This, your pride, I strike with sharp arrows; be firm. He, of mighty stature and great-bodied, then rushed towards me.)
I shall strike down your pride with these sharp arrows; stand firm. Then that mighty and large-bodied one rushed at me. (03-163-23)
ततो गिरिमिवात्यर्थमावृणोन्मां महाशरैः। तं चाहं शरवर्षेण महता समवाकिरम् ॥०३-१६३-२४॥
tato girim ivātyartham āvṛṇon māṃ mahā-śaraiḥ. taṃ ca ahaṃ śara-varṣeṇa mahatā samavākiram ॥03-163-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; आवृणोत् (āvṛṇot) - covered; माम् (mām) - me; महाशरैः (mahā-śaraiḥ) - with great arrows; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; शरवर्षेण (śara-varṣeṇa) - with arrow-shower; महता (mahatā) - great; समवाकिरम् (samavākiram) - I covered;]
(Then like a mountain exceedingly, he covered me with great arrows. Him also, I, with a great shower of arrows, covered.)
Then he covered me with great arrows, just as one might cover a mountain; and I too covered him with a great shower of arrows. (03-163-24)
ततः शरैर्दीप्तमुखैः पत्रितैरनुमन्त्रितैः। प्रत्यविध्यमहं तं तु वज्रैरिव शिलोच्चयम् ॥०३-१६३-२५॥
tataḥ śarair dīptamukhaiḥ patritair anumātritaiḥ। pratyavidhyam ahaṃ taṃ tu vajrair iva śilocchayam ॥03-163-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; दीप्तमुखैः (dīptamukhaiḥ) - with blazing-pointed; पत्रितैः (patritaiḥ) - with feathered; अनुमन्त्रितैः (anumātritaiḥ) - consecrated with incantations; प्रत्यविध्यम् (pratyavidhyam) - I pierced; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; वज्रैः (vajraiḥ) - with thunders; with vajras; इव (iva) - like; शिलोच्चयम् (śilocchayam) - rocky mass;]
(Then with arrows, blazing-pointed, feathered, consecrated with incantations, I pierced him but like with vajras a rocky mass.)
Then I pierced him with blazing, feathered arrows consecrated with incantations, but it was like hurling vajras at a rocky mountain. (03-163-25)
तस्य तच्छतधा रूपमभवच्च सहस्रधा। तानि चास्य शरीराणि शरैरहमताडयम् ॥०३-१६३-२६॥
tasya tacchatadhā rūpam abhavac ca sahasradhā. tāni ca asya śarīrāṇi śaraiḥ aham atāḍayam ॥03-163-26॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred parts; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; च (ca) - and; सहस्रधा (sahasradhā) - into a thousand parts; तानि (tāni) - those; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अहम् (aham) - I; अताडयम् (atāḍayam) - struck;]
(Of him, that form became divided a hundred times and a thousand times; and those bodies of his I struck with arrows.)
His form split into a hundred and then a thousand; and I struck those bodies of his with arrows. (03-163-26)
पुनस्तानि शरीराणि एकीभूतानि भारत। अदृश्यन्त महाराज तान्यहं व्यधमं पुनः ॥०३-१६३-२७॥
punas tāni śarīrāṇi ekībhūtāni bhārata। adṛśyanta mahārāja tāny ahaṃ vyadhamam punaḥ ॥03-163-27॥
[पुनः (punas) - again; तानि (tāni) - those; शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; एकीभूतानि (ekībhūtāni) - united; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तानि (tāni) - those; अहम् (aham) - I; व्यधमम् (vyadhamam) - scattered; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Again, those bodies united, O Bhārata, were seen, O great king; those I scattered again.)
Once again, O Bhārata, those united bodies became visible, O great king; and I scattered them again. (03-163-27)
अणुर्बृहच्छिरा भूत्वा बृहच्चाणुशिराः पुनः। एकीभूतस्तदा राजन्सोऽभ्यवर्तत मां युधि ॥०३-१६३-२८॥
aṇur bṛhac-chirā bhūtvā bṛhac-cāṇu-śirāḥ punaḥ। ekībhūtas tadā rājan so'bhyavartata māṃ yudhi॥03-163-28॥
[अणुः (aṇuḥ) - (he) small; बृहच्छिरा (bṛhac-chirā) - with a large head; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; बृहत्-अणु-शिराः (bṛhat-aṇu-śirāḥ) - with a large (then) small head; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एकीभूतः (ekībhūtaḥ) - having become one; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यवर्तत (abhyavartata) - approached; माम् (mām) - me; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Aṇuḥ with a large head having become, with a large (then) small head again; having become one then, O king, he approached me in battle.)
Having first become small with a large head, and then again with a large and then small head, he then became unified and, O king, he approached me in battle. (03-163-28)
यदाभिभवितुं बाणैर्नैव शक्नोमि तं रणे। ततोऽहमस्त्रमातिष्ठं वायव्यं भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१६३-२९॥
yadābhibhavitum bāṇair naiva śaknomi taṃ raṇe. tato'ham astram ātiṣṭhaṃ vāyavyaṃ bharatarṣabha ॥03-163-29॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; अभिभवितुं (abhibhavitum) - to overcome; (to conquer; to defeat; from abhibhū, to overpower;) बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; न एव (na eva) - not at all; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; तं (taṃ) - him; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; आतिष्ठं (ātiṣṭham) - I employed; वायव्यं (vāyavyam) - of wind; (related to Vāyu; wind god;) भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(When to overcome with arrows not at all I am able him in battle, then I weapon employed of wind, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, when I was not able to overcome him in battle with arrows, then I employed the wind weapon.
न चैनमशकं हन्तुं तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्। तस्मिन्प्रतिहते चास्त्रे विस्मयो मे महानभूत् ॥०३-१६३-३०॥
na ca enam aśakaṁ hantuṁ tad adbhutam iva abhavat। tasmin pratihate ca astre vismayaḥ me mahān abhūt॥03-163-30॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अशकम् (aśakam) - was able; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; आभवत् (abhavat) - arose; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रतिहते (pratihate) - when repelled; च (ca) - and; अस्त्रे (astre) - missile; विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - astonishment; मे (me) - to me; महान् (mahān) - great; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose;]
(Not and him was able to kill, that wonder as if arose. In that repelled and missile, astonishment to me great arose.)
I was not able to kill him, which seemed truly wondrous. And when that missile was repelled, great astonishment arose in me. (03-163-30)
भूयश्चैव महाराज सविशेषमहं ततः। अस्त्रपूगेन महता रणे भूतमवाकिरम् ॥०३-१६३-३१॥
bhūyaścaiva mahārāja saviśeṣam ahaṃ tataḥ। astrapūgena mahatā raṇe bhūtam avākiram ॥03-163-31॥
[भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सविशेषम् (saviśeṣam) - especially; अहम् (aham) - I; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्त्रपूगेन (astrapūgena) - with a multitude of missiles; महत् (mahatā) - great; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; भूतम् (bhūtam) - the being; अवाकिरम् (avākiram) - I covered;]
(Again and indeed, O great king, then especially I, with a great multitude of missiles, in battle, covered the being.)
O great king, then once again I especially covered the being in battle with a great multitude of missiles. (03-163-31)
स्थूणाकर्णमयोजालं शरवर्षं शरोल्बणम्। शैलास्त्रमश्मवर्षं च समास्थायाहमभ्ययाम् ॥ जग्रास प्रहसंस्तानि सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि मेऽनघ ॥०३-१६३-३२॥
sthūṇākarṇamayo jālaṃ śaravarṣaṃ śarolbaṇam। śailāstram aśmavarṣaṃ ca samāsthāyāham abhyayām॥ jagrāsa prahasaṃs tāni sarvāṇy astrāṇi me 'nagha॥03-163-32॥
[स्थूणाकर्णमय (sthūṇākarṇamaya) - formed of pillars and ears; जालम् (jālam) - network; शरवर्षम् (śaravarṣam) - shower of arrows; शरोल्बणम् (śarolbaṇam) - dense with arrows; शैलास्त्रम् (śailāstram) - missile of mountains; अश्मवर्षम् (aśmavarṣam) - shower of stones; च (ca) - and; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having taken up; अहम् (aham) - I; अभ्ययाम् (abhyayām) - approached; जग्रास (jagrāsa) - devoured; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - laughing; तानि (tāni) - those; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; मे (me) - my; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Network formed of pillars and ears, shower of arrows, dense with arrows, missile of mountains, shower of stones and, having taken up, I approached. Laughing, he devoured those all missiles of mine, O sinless one.)
I took up a network formed of pillars and ears, a shower of arrows thick with shafts, the missile of mountains and a rain of stones, and then I advanced. But laughing, he devoured all those missiles of mine, O sinless one. (03-163-32)
तेषु सर्वेषु शान्तेषु ब्रह्मास्त्रमहमादिशम्। ततः प्रज्वलितैर्बाणैः सर्वतः सोपचीयत ॥ उपचीयमानश्च मया महास्त्रेण व्यवर्धत ॥०३-१६३-३३॥
teṣu sarveṣu śānteṣu brahmāstram aham ādiśam। tataḥ prajvalitair bāṇaiḥ sarvataḥ sopacīyata ॥ upacīyamānaś ca mayā mahāstreṇa vyavardhata ॥03-163-33॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - in those;, सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all;, शान्तेषु (śānteṣu) - having become pacified;, ब्रह्मास्त्रम् (brahmāstram) - Brahmāstra;, अहम् (aham) - I;, आदिशम् (ādiśam) - ordered;, ततः (tataḥ) - then;, प्रज्वलितैः (prajvalitaiḥ) - by blazing;, बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows;, सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides;, सोपचीयत (sopacīyata) - increased;, उपचीयमानः (upacīyamānaḥ) - increasing;, च (ca) - and;, मया (mayā) - by me;, महास्त्रेण (mahāstreṇa) - with the great weapon;, व्यवर्धत (vyavardhata) - grew;]
(In those all pacified (conditions), I ordered the Brahmāstra. Then, by blazing arrows, it increased on all sides. And, increasing by me with the great weapon, it grew.)
When all those (forces) had become pacified, I commanded the Brahmāstra. Then, caused by the blazing arrows on all sides, it expanded. Increasing further by my use of the great weapon, it grew. (3-163-33)
ततः सन्तापितो लोको मत्प्रसूतेन तेजसा। क्षणेन हि दिशः खं च सर्वतोऽभिविदीपितम् ॥०३-१६३-३४॥
tataḥ santāpito loko matprasūtena tejasā. kṣaṇena hi diśaḥ khaṃ ca sarvato’bhividīpitam ॥03-163-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सन्तापितः (santāpitaḥ) - afflicted; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; मत्प्रसूतेन (matprasūtena) - produced from me; तेजसा (tejasā) - by radiance; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; हि (hi) - indeed; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; खम् (kham) - the sky; च (ca) - and; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; अभिविदीपितम् (abhividīpitam) - completely illuminated;]
(Then the world, afflicted by the radiance produced from me, in an instant indeed—the directions and the sky and on all sides—was completely illuminated.)
Then the world was afflicted by the radiance arising from me; in an instant, indeed, all the directions and the sky everywhere were completely illuminated. (03-163-34)
तदप्यस्त्रं महातेजाः क्षणेनैव व्यशातयत्। ब्रह्मास्त्रे तु हते राजन्भयं मां महदाविशत् ॥०३-१६३-३५॥
tad apy astraṃ mahā-tejāḥ kṣaṇenaiva vyaśātayat। brahmāstre tu hate rājan bhayaṃ māṃ mahad āviśat॥03-163-35॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अपि (api) - also; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यशातयत् (vyaśātayat) - he neutralized; ब्रह्मास्त्रे (brahmāstre) - the Brahmāstra; तु (tu) - but; हते (hate) - being destroyed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; माम् (mām) - me; महत् (mahat) - great; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(That weapon also, the one of great brilliance, he neutralized, indeed, in a moment. But when the Brahmāstra was destroyed, O king, great fear entered me.)
That weapon too, the one of great brilliance, he neutralized in a moment. But when the Brahmāstra was destroyed, O king, great fear took hold of me. (03-163-35)
ततोऽहं धनुरादाय तथाक्षय्यौ महेषुधी। सहसाभ्यहनं भूतं तान्यप्यस्त्राण्यभक्षयत् ॥०३-१६३-३६॥
tato'haṃ dhanur ādāya tathākṣayyau maheṣudhī. sahasābhyahanaṃ bhūtaṃ tānyapy astrāṇy abhakṣayat ॥03-163-36॥

(Then I, having taken the bow and likewise the two inexhaustible great arrows, suddenly struck the being; those weapons also it devoured.)
Then, having taken my bow and the two inexhaustible great arrows, I suddenly struck the being; it devoured even those weapons. (03-163-36)
हतेष्वस्त्रेषु सर्वेषु भक्षितेष्वायुधेषु च। मम तस्य च भूतस्य बाहुयुद्धमवर्तत ॥०३-१६३-३७॥
hateṣvastrēṣu sarvēṣu bhakṣiteṣvāyudhēṣu ca। mama tasya ca bhūtasya bāhuyuddham avartata ॥03-163-37॥
[हतेषु (hateṣu) - having been destroyed; (in) the slain; अस्त्रेषु (astreṣu) - missile weapons; (in) among missiles; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; (in) all; भक्षितेषु (bhakṣiteṣu) - having been consumed; (in) the eaten; आयुधेषु (āyudheṣu) - arms; (in) weapons; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; तस्य (tasya) - his; च (ca) - and; भूतस्य (bhūtasya) - being; creature's; बाहुयुद्धम् (bāhuyuddham) - hand-to-hand combat; अवर्तत (avartata) - took place;]
(When all the missile weapons had been destroyed, and all the conventional arms had been consumed, between myself and that being, hand-to-hand combat took place.)
After all the missile weapons were destroyed and all the conventional arms were consumed, hand-to-hand combat took place between myself and that being. (03-163-37)
व्यायामं मुष्टिभिः कृत्वा तलैरपि समाहतौ। अपातयच्च तद्भूतं निश्चेष्टो ह्यगमं महीम् ॥०३-१६३-३८॥
vyāyāmaṃ muṣṭibhiḥ kṛtvā talair api samāhatau। apātayac ca tadbhūtaṃ niśceṣṭo hy agamaṃ mahīm॥03-163-38॥
[व्यायामं (vyāyāmam) - exercise; (accusative singular); मुष्टिभिः (muṣṭibhiḥ) - with fists; (instrumental plural); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; (absolutive); तलैः (talaiḥ) - with palms; (instrumental plural); अपि (api) - also; समाहतौ (samāhatau) - having struck; (dual, perfect passive participle); अपातयत् (apātayat) - he caused to fall; (imperfect, active); च (ca) - and; तद्भूतं (tadbhūtam) - that being; (accusative singular); निश्चेष्टः (niśceṣṭaḥ) - motionless; (nominative singular masculine); हि (hi) - indeed; अगमं (agamaṃ) - I went; (first person singular, aorist); महीम् (mahīm) - to the earth; (accusative singular);]
(Exercise having done with fists, having also struck with palms, he caused also that being to fall; motionless indeed I went to the earth.)
Having exercised with fists and struck also with his palms, he caused that being to fall; I, being motionless, indeed fell to the ground. (3-163-38)
ततः प्रहस्य तद्भूतं तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। सह स्त्रीभिर्महाराज पश्यतो मेऽद्भुतोपमम् ॥०३-१६३-३९॥
tataḥ prahasya tadbhūtaṃ tatraivāntaradhīyata। saha strībhiḥ mahārāja paśyataḥ me adbhuta-upamam ॥03-163-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed aloud; तद्भूतम् (tadbhūtam) - that being; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; सह (saha) - together with; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - women; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while (I was) seeing; मे (me) - me; अद्भुतोपमम् (adbhuta-upamam) - marvel-like;]
(Then, having laughed aloud, that being right there disappeared together with the women, O great king, while I was seeing, marvel-like.)
Then, O great king, while I was watching, that marvelous being, along with the women, laughed aloud and vanished right there before my eyes. (03-163-39)
एवं कृत्वा स भगवांस्ततोऽन्यद्रूपमात्मनः। दिव्यमेव महाराज वसानोऽद्भुतमम्बरम् ॥०३-१६३-४०॥
evaṁ kṛtvā sa bhagavāṁs tato'nyad rūpam ātmanaḥ। divyam eva mahārāja vasāno'dbhutam ambaram॥03-163-40॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; एव (eva) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; वसानः (vasānaḥ) - wearing; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अम्बरम् (ambaram) - garment;]

हित्वा किरातरूपं च भगवांस्त्रिदशेश्वरः। स्वरूपं दिव्यमास्थाय तस्थौ तत्र महेश्वरः ॥०३-१६३-४१॥
hitvā kirātarūpaṁ ca bhagavāṁstridaśeśvaraḥ। svarūpaṁ divyamāsthāya tasthau tatra maheśvaraḥ ॥03-163-41॥
[हित्वा (hitvā) - having left; किरातरूपं (kirātarūpaṁ) - the form of a Kirāta (hunter); च (ca) - and; भगवाँ (bhagavān) - the Divine One; त्रिदशेश्वरः (tridaśeśvaraḥ) - lord of the gods; स्वरूपं (svarūpaṁ) - own form; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; तत्र (tatra) - there; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - the great Lord;]
(Having left the form of a Kirāta and the Divine One, the lord of the gods, having assumed his own divine form, stood there, the great Lord.)
Having abandoned the form of a Kirāta, the Divine Lord, ruler of the gods, assumed his own divine form and stood there, the Great Lord. (03-163-41)
अदृश्यत ततः साक्षाद्भगवान्गोवृषध्वजः। उमासहायो हरिदृग्बहुरूपः पिनाकधृक् ॥०३-१६३-४२॥
adṛśyata tataḥ sākṣādbhagavāngovṛṣadhvajaḥ। umāsahāyo haridṛgbahurūpaḥ pinākadhṛk ॥03-163-42॥
[अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; became visible; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; manifestly; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious; the revered; गोवृषध्वजः (govṛṣadhvajaḥ) - he whose banner is the bull (Śiva); उमा-सहायः (umāsahāyaḥ) - Uma's companion; accompanied by Umā (Pārvatī); हरि-दृक् (haridṛk) - with tawny eyes; बहुरूपः (bahurūpaḥ) - of many forms; पिनाक-धृक् (pinākadhṛk) - holder of the bow Pināka;]
(Then directly was seen the illustrious, he whose banner is the bull, Uma's companion, with tawny eyes, of many forms, holder of Pināka.)
Then there appeared directly before them the illustrious Lord Śiva, whose banner bears the bull, accompanied by Umā, possessing tawny eyes and many forms, the bearer of Pināka. (03-163-42)
स मामभ्येत्य समरे तथैवाभिमुखं स्थितम्। शूलपाणिरथोवाच तुष्टोऽस्मीति परन्तप ॥०३-१६३-४३॥
sa mām abhyetya samare tathaiva abhimukhaṃ sthitam। śūlapāṇiḥ atha uvāca tuṣṭaḥ asmi iti parantapa ॥03-163-43॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; समरे (samare) - in battle; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; अभिमुखं (abhimukham) - facing; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; शूलपाणिः (śūlapāṇiḥ) - the one with the spear in hand (Śiva); अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(He, having approached me in battle, just so facing, standing; Śūlapāṇi then said, 'Pleased I am,' thus, O scorcher of foes.)
He approached me on the battlefield, facing me as before and standing; then Śiva, holding the spear, said, 'I am pleased,' O scorcher of foes. (03-163-43)
ततस्तद्धनुरादाय तूणौ चाक्षय्यसायकौ। प्रादान्ममैव भगवान्वरयस्वेति चाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१६३-४४॥
tatas taddhanur ādāya tūṇau ca akṣayya-sāyakau। prādān mama eva bhagavān varayasva iti ca abravīt॥03-163-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तूणौ (tūṇau) - two quivers; च (ca) - and; अक्षय्यसायकौ (akṣayya-sāyakau) - inexhaustible arrows; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; मम एव (mama eva) - to me indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; वरयस्व (varayasva) - choose (a boon); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke;]
(Then, having taken that bow and the two quivers with inexhaustible arrows, the venerable one gave (them) to me indeed, and spoke thus: "Choose a boon.")
Then, having taken that bow and the two inexhaustible quivers of arrows, the venerable one gave them to me and said, "Choose a boon." (03-163-44)
तुष्टोऽस्मि तव कौन्तेय ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते। यत्ते मनोगतं वीर तद्ब्रूहि वितराम्यहम् ॥ अमरत्वमपाहाय ब्रूहि यत्ते मनोगतम् ॥०३-१६३-४५॥
tuṣṭo'smi tava kaunteya brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te। yat te manogataṃ vīra tad brūhi vitarāmy aham ॥ amaratvam apāhāya brūhi yat te manogatam ॥ 03-163-45॥
[तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; satisfied; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तव (tava) - with you; to you; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; tell; किम् (kim) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - for you; मनोगतम् (manogatam) - entered in mind; thought; वीर (vīra) - O hero; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; tell; वितरामि (vitarāmi) - I shall grant; अहम् (aham) - I; अमरत्वम् (amaratvam) - immortality; अपाहाय (apāhāya) - setting aside; abandoning; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; tell; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - for you; मनोगतम् (manogatam) - entered in mind; thought;]
(Pleased I am with you, O son of Kunti, say what shall I do for you. Which for you has entered the mind, O hero, that say, I shall grant. Immortality abandoning, say what for you has entered the mind.)
I am pleased with you, O son of Kunti. Tell me, what shall I do for you? O hero, whatever is in your mind, say that and I shall grant it. Setting aside immortality, tell me what is in your mind. (03-163-45)
ततः प्राञ्जलिरेवाहमस्त्रेषु गतमानसः। प्रणम्य शिरसा शर्वं ततो वचनमाददे ॥०३-१६३-४६॥
tataḥ prāñjalir evāham astreṣu gatamānasaḥ। praṇamya śirasā śarvaṃ tato vacanam ādade ॥03-163-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रेषु (astreṣu) - in the missiles; गतमानसः (gatamānasaḥ) - with the mind gone; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (my) head; शर्वम् (śarvam) - Śarva (Śiva); ततः (tataḥ) - then; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; आददे (ādade) - I took (up), I spoke;]
(Then, with joined palms indeed I, with the mind gone in the missiles, having bowed with (my) head to Śarva, then speech I took up (spoke).)
Then, with joined palms and mind absorbed in the missiles, I bowed my head to Śarva (Śiva) and then spoke these words. (03-163-46)
भगवान्मे प्रसन्नश्चेदीप्सितोऽयं वरो मम। अस्त्राणीच्छाम्यहं ज्ञातुं यानि देवेषु कानिचित् ॥ ददानीत्येव भगवानब्रवीत्त्र्यम्बकश्च माम् ॥०३-१६३-४७॥
bhagavān me prasannaś ced īpsito 'yaṁ varo mama। astrāṇi icchāmi ahaṁ jñātum yāni deveṣu kānicit॥ dadānīti eva bhagavān abravīt tryambakaś ca mām॥03-163-47॥
[भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed One; मे (me) - to me; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - being gracious; चेत् (cet) - if; ईप्सितः (īpsitaḥ) - desired; अयम् (ayam) - this; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; मम (mama) - for me; अस्त्राणि (astrāni) - weapons; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; यानि (yāni) - which; देवेषु (deveṣu) - among the gods; कानिचित् (kānicit) - whatever; ददानीति (dadānīti) - "I will give"; एव (eva) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed One; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; त्र्यम्बकश् (tryambakaḥ) - Tryambaka (three-eyed one); च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - to me;]
(The Blessed One, if gracious to me, this desired boon for me; weapons I wish to know, which among the gods whatever. "I will give indeed," the Blessed One Tryambaka said to me. (03-163-47))
If the Blessed One is gracious to me, let this desired boon be mine: I wish to know the weapons, whichever exist among the gods. Tryambaka, the Blessed One, said to me, "I will indeed give (them)." (03-163-47)
रौद्रमस्त्रं मदीयं त्वामुपस्थास्यति पाण्डव। प्रददौ च मम प्रीतः सोऽस्त्रं पाशुपतं प्रभुः ॥०३-१६३-४८॥
raudram astraṃ madīyaṃ tvām upasthāsyati pāṇḍava। pradadau ca mama prītaḥ so'straṃ pāśupataṃ prabhuḥ ॥03-163-48॥
[रौद्रम् (raudram) - of Rudra; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; मदीयं (madīyaṃ) - my; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; उपस्थास्यति (upasthāsyati) - will present; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; प्रददौ (pradadau) - he gave; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - to me; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - being pleased; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; पाशुपतं (pāśupataṃ) - Pāśupata; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord;]
(The missile of Rudra, mine, to you will present, O Pāṇḍava. And he gave to me, being pleased, he, the Lord, the Pāśupata missile.)
O Pāṇḍava, my Rudra's missile will be given to you. And the Lord, being pleased, gave me the Pāśupata missile. (03-163-48)
उवाच च महादेवो दत्त्वा मेऽस्त्रं सनातनम्। न प्रयोज्यं भवेदेतन्मानुषेषु कथञ्चन ॥०३-१६३-४९॥
uvāca ca mahādevo dattvā me'straṃ sanātanam। na prayojyaṃ bhaved etan mānuṣeṣu kathaṃcana ॥03-163-49॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; च (ca) - and; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva (the great god); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; मे (me) - to me; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; न (na) - not; प्रयोज्यम् (prayojyam) - to be used; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; एतत् (etat) - this; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among humans; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(And Mahadeva spoke, having given to me the eternal weapon: This should not be used among humans in any way.)
Mahadeva, after giving me the eternal weapon, said: "This must never be used among humans in any way." (03-163-49)
पीड्यमानेन बलवत्प्रयोज्यं ते धनञ्जय। अस्त्राणां प्रतिघाते च सर्वथैव प्रयोजयेः ॥०३-१६३-५०॥
pīḍyamānena balavat-prayojyaṃ te dhanañjaya। astrāṇāṃ pratighāte ca sarvathaiva prayojayeḥ॥03-163-50॥
[पीड्यमानेन (pīḍyamānena) - by the one who is being pressed; by the one who is being assailed; बलवत्-प्रयोज्यं (balavat-prayojyaṃ) - powerfully to be used; forcefully to be employed; ते (te) - by you; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; अस्त्राणां (astrāṇām) - of weapons; प्रतिघाते (pratighāte) - in repelling; for counteraction; च (ca) - and; सर्वथा-एव (sarvathā-eva) - in every way indeed; प्रयोजयेः (prayojayeḥ) - you must employ;]
(By the one who is being assailed, you must employ powerfully, O Dhananjaya, for the repelling of weapons and in every way indeed you must make use.)
O Dhananjaya, when being assailed, you should forcefully employ it for the repelling of weapons, and in every way you should use it. (03-163-50)
तदप्रतिहतं दिव्यं सर्वास्त्रप्रतिषेधनम्। मूर्तिमन्मे स्थितं पार्श्वे प्रसन्ने गोवृषध्वजे ॥०३-१६३-५१॥
tadapratihataṃ divyaṃ sarvāstrapratiṣedhanam। mūrtimanme sthitaṃ pārśve prasanne govṛṣadhvaje ॥03-163-51॥
[तदप्रतिहतं (tad-apratihataṃ) - that-unimpeded; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; सर्वास्त्रप्रतिषेधनम् (sarva-astra-pratiṣedhanam) - all-weapons-preventing; मूर्तिमत् (mūrtimat) - embodied; मे (me) - my; स्थितं (sthitaṃ) - situated; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - at the side; प्रसन्ने (prasanne) - gracious; गोवृषध्वजे (govṛṣadhvaje) - one whose banner bears a bull (Śiva);]
(That unimpeded divine (thing), preventing all weapons, embodied, my, situated at (my) side, in the gracious Govṛṣadhvaja.)
That unimpeded divine form, which prevents all weapons, embodied, is present at my side, in the gracious Govṛṣadhvaja (Śiva). (03-163-51)
उत्सादनममित्राणां परसेनानिकर्तनम्। दुरासदं दुष्प्रहसं सुरदानवराक्षसैः ॥०३-१६३-५२॥
utsādanam amitrāṇām parasenā-nikartanam। durāsadam duṣprahāsam sura-dānava-rākṣasaiḥ॥03-163-52॥
[उत्सादनम् (utsādanam) - destruction; अमित्राणाम् (amitrāṇām) - of enemies; परसेना (parasenā) - of the hostile army; निकर्तनम् (nikartanam) - cutting down; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - hard to subdue; दुष्प्रहसम् (duṣprahāsam) - difficult to laugh at; सुरदानवराक्षसैः (sura-dānava-rākṣasaiḥ) - by gods, demons, and rākṣasas;]
(Destruction of enemies, cutting down of the hostile army, hard to subdue, difficult to be laughed at, by gods, demons, and rākṣasas.)
Destruction of enemies and the cutting down of hostile armies—this act is something hard to overcome and impossible to ridicule, even by the gods, demons, or rākṣasas. (03-163-52)
अनुज्ञातस्त्वहं तेन तत्रैव समुपाविशम्। प्रेक्षतश्चैव मे देवस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥०३-१६३-५३॥
anujñātastvahaṃ tena tatraiva samupāviśam। prekṣataścaiva me devastatraivāntaradhīyata ॥03-163-53॥
[अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; त्व् अहम् (tv aham) - then I; तेन (tena) - by him; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - there itself; समुपाविशम् (samupāviśam) - I sat down; प्रेक्षतः च एव (prekṣataś ca eva) - while looking and indeed; मे (me) - my; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Having been permitted, then I by him there itself sat down. While I was indeed looking, my god right there disappeared.)
Then, having been permitted by him, I sat down right there. While I was watching, my deity disappeared on the spot. (03-163-53)
