Arjuna said.
कृतास्त्रमभिविश्वस्तमथ मां हरिवाहनः। संस्पृश्य मूर्ध्नि पाणिभ्यामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१६५-१॥
kṛtāstram abhiviśvastam atha māṃ harivāhanaḥ। saṃspṛśya mūrdhni pāṇibhyām idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥03-165-1॥
[कृतास्त्रम् (kṛtāstram) - who had performed the missile-rites; अभिविश्वस्तम् (abhiviśvastam) - completely confident; अथ (atha) - then; माम् (mām) - me; हरिवाहनः (harivāhanaḥ) - Hari's vehicle (Garuda); संस्पृश्य (saṃspṛśya) - having touched; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; पाणिभ्याम् (pāṇibhyām) - with both hands; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
(Who had performed the missile-rites, completely confident, then me, Hari's vehicle, having touched on the head with both hands, this speech he said.)
Then, Hari's vehicle (Garuda), seeing me who had performed the missile-rites and was completely confident, touched my head with both hands and spoke these words. (03-165-1)
न त्वमद्य युधा जेतुं शक्यः सुरगणैरपि। किं पुनर्मानुषे लोके मानुषैरकृतात्मभिः ॥ अप्रमेयोऽप्रधृष्यश्च युद्धेष्वप्रतिमस्तथा ॥०३-१६५-२॥
na tvam adya yudhā jetuṃ śakyaḥ suragaṇair api. kiṃ punar mānuṣe loke mānuṣair akṛtātmabhiḥ ॥ aprameyo'pradhṛṣyaś ca yuddheṣv apratimas tathā ॥03-165-2॥
[न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; युधा (yudhā) - in battle; जेतुं (jetuṃ) - to defeat; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; सुरगणैः (suragaṇaiḥ) - by groups of gods; अपि (api) - even; किं (kiṃ) - what (to say); पुनः (punaḥ) - then (again); मानुषे (mānuṣe) - in human; लोके (loke) - world; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - by humans; अकृतात्मभिः (akṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those who have not mastered themselves; अप्रमेयः (aprameyaḥ) - immeasurable; अप्रधृष्यः (apradhṛṣyaḥ) - unassailable; च (ca) - and; युद्धेषु (yuddheṣu) - in battles; अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - without equal; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Not you today in battle to defeat possible by bands of gods even. What then in the human world by humans who have not mastered themselves? Immeasurable, unassailable and in battles without equal thus.)
Today, even hosts of gods cannot defeat you in battle. What to speak then of humans in the mortal world, especially those who have not mastered themselves? Truly, you are immeasurable, invincible, and without equal in battles. (03-165-2)
अथाब्रवीत्पुनर्देवः सम्प्रहृष्टतनूरुहः। अस्त्रयुद्धे समो वीर न ते कश्चिद्भविष्यति ॥०३-१६५-३॥
athābravītpunardevaḥ samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ। astrayuddhe samo vīra na te kaścidbhaviṣyati ॥03-165-3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुनः (punar) - again; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; सम्प्रहृष्ट (samprahṛṣṭa) - very delighted; तनूरुहः (tanūruhaḥ) - with hair standing on end; अस्त्रयुद्धे (astrayuddhe) - in weapon-battle; समः (samaḥ) - equal; वीर (vīra) - hero; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Then the god, again, very delighted, with hair standing on end, said: In weapon-battle, equal hero not to you anyone will be.)
Then the god, again, very delighted, with hair standing on end, said: "O hero, in weapon-battle there will be no one equal to you." (03-165-3)
अप्रमत्तः सदा दक्षः सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः। ब्रह्मण्यश्चास्त्रविच्चासि शूरश्चासि कुरूद्वह ॥०३-१६५-४॥
apramattaḥ sadā dakṣaḥ satyavādī jitendriyaḥ। brahmaṇyaś cāstravic cāsi śūraś cāsi kurūd-vaha ॥03-165-4॥
[अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - not heedless; सदा (sadā) - always; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - skilful; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to the Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; अस्त्रवित् (astravit) - knower of weapons; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; शूरः (śūraḥ) - heroic; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; कुरूद्वह (kurūd-vaha) - O carrier of the Kuru lineage;]
(Not heedless, always skilful, speaker of truth, conqueror of the senses, devoted to the Brāhmaṇas and knower of weapons, and you are heroic and you are, O carrier of the Kuru lineage.)
You are ever attentive, skilful, truthful, self-controlled, devoted to the Brāhmaṇas, well-versed in weapons, heroic, O upholder of the Kuru lineage. (03-165-4)
अस्त्राणि समवाप्तानि त्वया दश च पञ्च च। पञ्चभिर्विधिभिः पार्थ न त्वया विद्यते समः ॥०३-१६५-५॥
astrāṇi samavāptāni tvayā daśa ca pañca ca। pañcabhirvidhibhiḥ pārtha na tvayā vidyate samaḥ॥03-165-5॥

(Weapons fully obtained by you, ten and five, and by five methods, O Pārtha; not by you is found equal.)
O Pārtha, you have completely acquired fifteen weapons by five methods, and no one equal to you is to be found. (03-165-5)
प्रयोगमुपसंहारमावृत्तिं च धनञ्जय। प्रायश्चित्तं च वेत्थ त्वं प्रतिघातं च सर्वशः ॥०३-१६५-६॥
prayogam upasaṃhāram āvṛttiṃ ca dhanañjaya. prāyaścittaṃ ca vettha tvaṃ pratighātaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥03-165-6॥
[प्रयोगम् (prayogam) - application; उपसंहारम् (upasaṃhāram) - withdrawal; आवृत्तिं (āvṛttiṃ) - repetition; च (ca) - and; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; प्रायश्चित्तं (prāyaścittam) - expiation; च (ca) - and; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रतिघातं (pratighātam) - counteraction; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]

तव गुर्वर्थकालोऽयमुपपन्नः परन्तप। प्रतिजानीष्व तं कर्तुमतो वेत्स्याम्यहं परम् ॥०३-१६५-७॥
tava gurvarthakālo'yamupapannaḥ parantapa। pratijānīṣva taṃ kartumato vetsyāmyahaṃ param ॥03-165-7॥
[तव (tava) - of you; गुर्वर्थकालः (gurvarthakālaḥ) - time for the sake of teacher; अयम् (ayam) - this; उपपन्नः (upapannaḥ) - has arrived; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; प्रतिजानीष्व (pratijānīṣva) - promise; तं (tam) - that; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; वेत्स्यामि (vetsyāmi) - I will know; अहम् (aham) - I; परम् (param) - more;]
(Of you, time for the teacher's sake, this has arrived, O scorcher of foes. Promise that to do; therefore, I will know more.)
O conquering hero, the time to serve your teacher has now arrived. Therefore, make that promise to do so; I will know more. (03-165-7)
ततोऽहमब्रुवं राजन्देवराजमिदं वचः। विषह्यं चेन्मया कर्तुं कृतमेव निबोध तत् ॥०३-१६५-८॥
tato'ham abruvaṃ rājan devarājam idaṃ vacaḥ। viṣahyaṃ cet mayā kartuṃ kṛtam eva nibodha tat ॥03-165-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - spoke; राजन् (rājan) - O king; देवराजम् (devarājam) - to the king of the gods; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; विषह्यम् (viṣahyam) - to be endured; चेत् (cet) - if; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done; एव (eva) - indeed; निबोध (nibodha) - know; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Then I spoke, O king, to the king of the gods, this speech: If it is to be endured by me, to do, it has indeed been done—know that.)
Then I said to the king of the gods, "O king, know that if this task was to be endured and done by me, it has already indeed been done." (03-165-8)
ततो मामब्रवीद्राजन्प्रहस्य बलवृत्रहा। नाविषह्यं तवाद्यास्ति त्रिषु लोकेषु किञ्चन ॥०३-१६५-९॥
tato mām abravīd rājan prahasya balavṛtrahā। nāviṣahyaṃ tavādyāsti triṣu lokeṣu kiñcana॥03-165-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; बलवृत्रहा (balavṛtrahā) - the slayer of strong Vṛtra; न (na) - not; अविषह्यम् (aviṣahyam) - insurmountable; तव (tava) - for you; अद्य (adya) - today; अस्ति (asti) - there is; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(Then to me he said, O king, having smiled, the slayer of strong Vṛtra: "Not insurmountable for you today is there anything in the three worlds.")
Then, O king, having smiled, the slayer of Vṛtra said to me: "Today, there is nothing in the three worlds that is insurmountable for you." (03-165-9)
निवातकवचा नाम दानवा मम शत्रवः। समुद्रकुक्षिमाश्रित्य दुर्गे प्रतिवसन्त्युत ॥०३-१६५-१०॥
nivātakavacā nāma dānavā mama śatravaḥ। samudrakukṣim āśritya durge prativasanty uta ॥03-165-10॥
[निवातकवचा (nivātakavacā) - Nivātakavachā; (proper noun; name of a class of demons); नाम (nāma) - by name; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - demons; मम (mama) - my; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; समुद्रकुक्षिम् (samudrakukṣim) - ocean's hollow (depth/bosom); आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; दुर्गे (durge) - in the fort; प्रतिवसन्ति (prativasanti) - dwell; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Nivātakavachā by name demons my enemies ocean's hollow having resorted to in the fort dwell indeed.)
Demons called the Nivātakavachās, my enemies, indeed dwell in a fortress stationed within the ocean's depths. (03-165-10)
तिस्रः कोट्यः समाख्यातास्तुल्यरूपबलप्रभाः। तांस्तत्र जहि कौन्तेय गुर्वर्थस्ते भविष्यति ॥०३-१६५-११॥
tisraḥ koṭyaḥ samākhyātās tulyarūpabalaprabhāḥ। tāṃs tatra jahi kaunteya gurvarthas te bhaviṣyati ॥03-165-11॥
[तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three (feminine nominative plural); कोट्यः (koṭyaḥ) - crores; समाख्याताः (samākhyātāḥ) - named; तुल्यरूपबलप्रभाः (tulyarūpabalaprabhāḥ) - equal in form, strength, and splendor; तांस्तत्र (tāṃs tatra) - them, there; जहि (jahi) - slay; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; गुर्वर्थः (gurvarthaḥ) - important purpose; ते (te) - for you; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Three crores named, equal in form, strength, and splendor, them there slay, O son of Kunti; important purpose for you will be.)
There are three crores (thirty million), named and equal in appearance, strength, and splendor. Slay them there, O son of Kunti; it will serve a great purpose for you. (03-165-11)
ततो मातलिसंयुक्तं मयूरसमरोमभिः। हयैरुपेतं प्रादान्मे रथं दिव्यं महाप्रभम् ॥०३-१६५-१२॥
tato mātalisaṃyuktaṃ mayūrasamaromabhiḥ। hayairupetaṃ prādānme rathaṃ divyaṃ mahāprabham ॥03-165-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मातलिसंयुक्तम् (mātalisaṃyuktam) - joined with Mātali; मयूरसमरोमभिः (mayūrasamaromabhiḥ) - with manes like peacock feathers; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - by horses; उपेतम् (upetam) - endowed; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; मे (me) - to me; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; महाप्रभम् (mahāprabham) - of great splendor;]
(Then, joined with Mātali, with horses having manes like peacock feathers, endowed, he gave to me a divine chariot of great splendor.)

बबन्ध चैव मे मूर्ध्नि किरीटमिदमुत्तमम्। स्वरूपसदृशं चैव प्रादादङ्गविभूषणम् ॥०३-१६५-१३॥
babandha caiva me mūrdhni kirīṭam idam uttamam। svarūpasadṛśaṃ caiva prādād aṅgavibhūṣaṇam॥03-165-13॥

(He fastened, and indeed, on my head this excellent crown. And indeed, he gave an ornament for the body matching the own form.)

अभेद्यं कवचं चेदं स्पर्शरूपवदुत्तमम्। अजरां ज्यामिमां चापि गाण्डीवे समयोजयत् ॥०३-१६५-१४॥
abhedyaṃ kavacaṃ cedaṃ sparśarūpavaduttamam। ajarāṃ jyāmimāṃ cāpi gāṇḍīve samayojayat॥03-165-14॥

tataḥ prāyāmahaṃ tena syandanena virājatā। yenājayaddevapatirbaliṃ vairocaniṃ purā ॥03-165-15॥

ततो देवाः सर्व एव तेन घोषेण बोधितः। मन्वाना देवराजं मां समाजग्मुर्विशां पते ॥ दृष्ट्वा च मामपृच्छन्त किं करिष्यसि फल्गुन ॥०३-१६५-१६॥
tato devāḥ sarva eva tena ghoṣeṇa bodhitaḥ। manvānā devarājaṃ māṃ samājagmur viśāṃ pate॥ dṛṣṭvā ca mām apṛcchanta kiṃ kariṣyasi phalguna॥03-165-16॥

(Then all the gods indeed, awakened by that sound, thinking me the king of gods, O lord of the people, approached me; and having seen me, they asked, "What will you do, Phalguna?" (03-165-16))

[तान् (tān) - them; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke; यथाभूतम् (yathābhūtam) - as it is; इदम् (idam) - this; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; अस्मि (asmi) - (I) am; संयुगे (saṁyuge) - in battle; निवातकवचानाम् (nivātakavacānām) - of the Nivātakavacas; तु (tu) - but; प्रस्थितम् (prasthitam) - departed; माम् (mām) - me; वधैषिणम् (vadhaiṣiṇam) - desiring to kill; निबोधत (nibodhata) - know; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - O greatly fortunate ones; शिवम् (śivam) - welfare; च (ca) - and; आशास्ते (āśāste) - wishes; मे (me) - my; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O sinless ones;]
(Them I spoke as it is this (that) I am the doer in battle. Of the Nivātakavacas but departed me desiring to kill. Know, O greatly fortunate ones, and welfare my wishes, O sinless ones. (03-165-17))
I told them this exactly as it was: that I am the agent in battle. But the Nivātakavacas set out, seeking to kill me. Know this, O greatly fortunate ones, and may my wishes be for your well-being, O sinless ones. (03-165-17)
तुष्टुवुर्मां प्रसन्नास्ते यथा देवं पुरंदरम्। रथेनानेन मघवा जितवाञ्शम्बरं युधि ॥ नमुचिं बलवृत्रौ च प्रह्लादनरकावपि ॥०३-१६५-१८॥
tuṣṭuvur māṃ prasannās te yathā devaṃ puraṃdaram | rathenānena maghavā jitavāñ śambaraṃ yudhi || namuciṃ balavṛtrau ca prahlāda-narakāv api ||03-165-18||

(They, being well-pleased, praised me as (they praise) the god Purandara; with this chariot Maghavan conquered Śambara in battle—(also) Namuci, Bala and Vṛtra, and Prahlāda and Naraka also.)

(Many and thousands, ten million units, hundred million units and, by this chariot, of the Daityas, conquered, Maghavan (Indra), in battle.)

tvam apy etena kaunteya nivātakavacān raṇe। vijetā yudhi vikramya pura iva maghavān vaśī ॥03-165-20॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; एतेन (etena) - by this; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; निवातकवचान् (nivātakavacān) - the Nivātakavacha (demons); रणे (raṇe) - in battle; विजेता (vijetā) - conqueror; युधि (yudhi) - in fight; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having exerted oneself; पुरा (purā) - formerly; इव (iva) - like; मघवान् (maghavān) - Maghavan (Indra); वशी (vaśī) - controller;]
(You also, by this, O son of Kuntī, the Nivātakavacha in battle, conqueror, in fight, having exerted yourself, formerly like Maghavan (Indra), controller.)
O son of Kuntī, you too, by this (means), can conquer the Nivātakavacha demons in battle, exerting yourself in the fight just as Maghavan (Indra), the lord, did formerly. (03-165-20)
अयं च शङ्खप्रवरो येन जेतासि दानवान्। अनेन विजिता लोकाः शक्रेणापि महात्मना ॥०३-१६५-२१॥
ayaṃ ca śaṅkhapravaro yena jetāsi dānavān। anena vijitā lokāḥ śakreṇāpi mahātmanā ॥03-165-21॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; शङ्खप्रवरो (śaṅkhapravaro) - the foremost conch; येन (yena) - by which; जेतासि (jetāsi) - you will conquer; दानवान् (dānavān) - the Dānavas (demons); अनेन (anena) - by this; विजिता (vijitā) - conquered; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; शक्रेणापि (śakreṇāpi) - even by Śakra (Indra); महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled;]
(This and the foremost conch by which you will conquer the Dānavas. By this, the worlds were conquered even by Śakra, the great-souled one.)
This is the foremost conch by which you will conquer the Dānavas. With this, even Śakra (Indra), the great-souled one, conquered the worlds. (03-165-21)
प्रदीयमानं देवैस्तु देवदत्तं जलोद्भवम्। प्रत्यगृह्णं जयायैनं स्तूयमानस्तदामरैः ॥०३-१६५-२२॥
pradīyamānaṃ devais tu devadattaṃ jalodbhavam। pratyagṛhṇaṃ jayāyainaṃ stūyamānas tadāmaraiḥ ॥03-165-22॥
[प्रदीयमानं (pradīyamānaṃ) - being given; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; तु (tu) - but; देवदत्तं (devadattaṃ) - given by the gods; जलोद्भवम् (jalodbhavam) - arisen from water; प्रत्यगृह्णम् (pratyagṛhṇam) - I accepted; जयाय (jayāya) - for victory; एनम् (enam) - this (object); स्तूयमानः (stūyamānaḥ) - being praised; तदा (tadā) - at that time; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - by the immortals (gods);]
(Being given by the gods, the object given by the gods, arisen from water, I accepted for victory this (object), being praised at that time by the immortals.)
As it was being given by the gods—the divine gift arisen from water—I accepted it for victory, being praised at that time by the immortals. (03-165-22)
स शङ्खी कवची बाणी प्रगृहीतशरासनः। दानवालयमत्युग्रं प्रयातोऽस्मि युयुत्सया ॥०३-१६५-२३॥
sa śaṅkhī kavacī bāṇī pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ। dānavālayamatyugraṃ prayāto'smi yuyutsayā ॥03-165-23॥
[स (sa) - he; शङ्खी (śaṅkhī) - holding conch; कवची (kavacī) - wearing armor; बाणी (bāṇī) - carrying arrows; प्रगृहीतशरासनः (pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ) - having his bow taken up; दानवालयम् (dānavālayam) - abode of the demons; अत्युग्रं (atyugram) - very fierce; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - gone; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; युयुत्सया (yuyutsayā) - with desire to fight;]
(He, holding a conch, wearing armor, carrying arrows, with his bow taken up, to the very fierce abode of the demons, gone am I with desire to fight.)
