ततोऽहं स्तूयमानस्तु तत्र तत्र महर्षिभिः। अपश्यमुदधिं भीममपाम्पतिमथाव्ययम् ॥०३-१६६-१॥
tato'haṃ stūyamānastu tatra tatra maharṣibhiḥ। apaśyamudadhiṃ bhīmam apāmpatim athāvyayam॥03-166-1॥

(Then I, being praised but here and there by great sages, I saw the terribly fearful, imperishable lord of waters, the ocean.)

तिमिङ्गिलाः कच्छपाश्च तथा तिमितिमिङ्गिलाः। मकराश्चात्र दृश्यन्ते जले मग्ना इवाद्रयः ॥०३-१६६-३॥
timiṅgilāḥ kacchapāś ca tathā timitimiṅgilāḥ। makarāś cātra dṛśyante jale magnā ivādrayaḥ॥03-166-3॥
[तिमिङ्गिलाः (timiṅgilāḥ) - great aquatic creatures (Timiṅgila); कच्छपाः (kacchapāḥ) - tortoises; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - as well as; तिमितिमिङ्गिलाः (timitimiṅgilāḥ) - gigantic whales; मकराः (makarāḥ) - crocodiles; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; जले (jale) - in the water; मग्नाः (magnāḥ) - submerged; इव (iva) - like; अद्रयः (adrayaḥ) - mountains;]
(Timiṅgila, tortoises and also gigantic whales; crocodiles and here are seen in the water submerged like mountains.)

शङ्खानां च सहस्राणि मग्नान्यप्सु समन्ततः। दृश्यन्ते स्म यथा रात्रौ तारास्तन्वभ्रसंवृताः ॥०३-१६६-४॥
śaṅkhānāṃ ca sahasrāṇi magnāny apsu samantataḥ। dṛśyante sma yathā rātrau tārās tanv-abhrasaṃvṛtāḥ ॥03-166-4॥
[शङ्खानां (śaṅkhānāṃ) - of conch-shells; च (ca) - and; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; मग्नानि (magnāni) - sunken; अप्सु (apsu) - in water; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - were seen; स्म (sma) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - like; as; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; ताराः (tārāḥ) - stars; तन्वभ्रसंवृताः (tanv-abhrasaṃvṛtāḥ) - covered by thin clouds;]
(Of conch-shells and thousands sunken in water all around were seen indeed like at night stars covered by thin clouds.)

तथा सहस्रशस्तत्र रत्नसङ्घाः प्लवन्त्युत। वायुश्च घूर्णते भीमस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०३-१६६-५॥

[तथा (tathā) - thus; सहस्रशः (sahasraśas) - by thousands; तत्र (tatra) - there; रत्नसङ्घाः (ratnasaṅghāḥ) - assemblies of jewels; प्लवन्ति (plavanti) - float; उत (uta) - indeed; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - the wind; च (ca) - and; घूर्णते (ghūrṇate) - swirls; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - terrible; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wondrous; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Thus by thousands there assemblies of jewels float indeed. The wind also swirls, terrible, that became as if wondrous.)
Thus, by the thousands, assemblies of jewels floated there. The wind also swirled fiercely, and it all appeared truly wondrous (03-166-5).
तमतीत्य महावेगं सर्वाम्भोनिधिमुत्तमम्। अपश्यं दानवाकीर्णं तद्दैत्यपुरमन्तिकात् ॥०३-१६६-६॥
tam atītya mahā-vegaṃ sarva-ambho-nidhim uttamam। apaśyaṃ dānava-ākīrṇaṃ tat daitya-pura-antikāt॥03-166-6॥

(Having crossed him with great speed, the best of all oceans, I saw that (place) filled with Dānavas from near the city of Daityas.)

तत्रैव मातलिस्तूर्णं निपत्य पृथिवीतले। नादयन्रथघोषेण तत्पुरं समुपाद्रवत् ॥०३-१६६-७॥

रथघोषं तु तं श्रुत्वा स्तनयित्नोरिवाम्बरे। मन्वाना देवराजं मां संविग्ना दानवाभवन् ॥०३-१६६-८॥
rathaghoṣaṃ tu taṃ śrutvā stanayitnor ivāmbare। manvānā devarājaṃ māṃ saṃvignā dānavābhavan ॥03-166-8॥

(Having heard that chariot-sound, but, like the thunder in the sky, thinking me to be the king of the gods, the Dānavas became alarmed.)

सर्वे सम्भ्रान्तमनसः शरचापधराः स्थिताः। तथा शूलासिपरशुगदामुसलपाणयः ॥०३-१६६-९॥
sarve sambhrāntamanasaḥ śaracāpadharāḥ sthitāḥ। tathā śūlāsiparaśugadāmusalapāṇayaḥ॥03-166-9॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; सम्भ्रान्तमनसः (sambhrāntamanasaḥ) - with agitated minds; शरचापधराः (śaracāpadharāḥ) - bearing arrows and bows; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - stood; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शूलासिपरशुगदामुसलपाणयः (śūlāsiparaśugadāmusalapāṇayaḥ) - holding spears, swords, axes, maces, clubs (in their hands);]

ततो द्वाराणि पिदधुर्दानवास्त्रस्तचेतसः। संविधाय पुरे रक्षां न स्म कश्चन दृश्यते ॥०३-१६६-१०॥
tato dvārāṇi pidadhur dānavās trasta-cetasaḥ। saṃvidhāya pure rakṣāṃ na sma kaścana dṛśyate॥03-166-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वाराणि (dvārāṇi) - doors; पिदधुः (pidadhur) - closed; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; त्रस्तचेतसः (trasta-cetasaḥ) - with frightened minds; संविधाय (saṃvidhāya) - having arranged; पुरे (pure) - in the city; रक्षाम् (rakṣām) - defense; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(Then the Dānavas with frightened minds closed the doors, having arranged defense in the city; indeed, not anyone is seen.)
Then the Dānavas, their minds full of fear, closed the doors and arranged defenses in the city; not a single person was seen. (3-166-10)
ततः शङ्खमुपादाय देवदत्तं महास्वनम्। पुरमासुरमाश्लिष्य प्राधमं तं शनैरहम् ॥०३-१६६-११॥
tataḥ śaṅkham upādāya devadattaṃ mahāsvanam। puram āsuram āśliṣya prādhamaṃ taṃ śanair aham ॥03-166-11॥

(Thereupon, having taken the conch named Devadatta, great-sounding, having embraced the city of the Asura, at first, that, slowly, I.)
Thereupon, I slowly took up the great-sounding conch Devadatta, encircled the city of the Asura, and first approached it. (03-166-11)
स तु शब्दो दिवं स्तब्ध्वा प्रतिशब्दमजीजनत्। वित्रेसुश्च निलिल्युश्च भूतानि सुमहान्त्यपि ॥०३-१६६-१२॥
sa tu śabdo divaṃ stabdhvā pratiśabdam ajījanat। vitresuś ca nililyuś ca bhūtāni sumahānty api॥03-166-12॥
[स (sa) - he; or that; तु (tu) - but; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; दिवम् (divam) - sky; स्तब्ध्वा (stabdhvā) - having reached; प्रतिशब्दम् (pratiśabdam) - echo; अजीजनत् (ajījanat) - produced; वित्रेसुः (vitresuḥ) - became terrified; च (ca) - and; निलिल्युः (nililyuḥ) - they hid; च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; सुमहान्ति (sumahānti) - very great; अपि (api) - even;]
(He but sound sky having reached echo produced. Terrified and they hid and creatures very great even.)
But that sound, having reached the sky, produced an echo. The creatures, even the very great ones, became terrified and hid. (03-166-12)
ततो निवातकवचाः सर्व एव समन्ततः। दंशिता विविधैस्त्राणैर्विविधायुधपाणयः ॥०३-१६६-१३॥
tato nivātakavacāḥ sarva eva samantataḥ। daṃśitā vividhāistrāṇairvividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ ॥03-166-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavacas; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - only; indeed; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; दंशिताः (daṃśitāḥ) - cased; armed; protected; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; त्राणैः (trāṇaiḥ) - protections; armors; विविधायुधपाणयः (vividhāyudhapāṇayaḥ) - holding various weapons;]
(Then the Nivātakavacas, all indeed on all sides, armed with various protections, holding various weapons.)

(Then, after considering in many ways in the chariot-paths, those horses Mātali urged on in the level region, O bull among the Bharatas.)

तेन तेषां प्रणुन्नानामाशुत्वाच्छीघ्रगामिनाम्। नान्वपश्यं तदा किञ्चित्तन्मेऽद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०३-१६६-१७॥
tena teṣāṃ praṇunnānām āśutvāt śīghragāminām। nānvapaśyaṃ tadā kiñcit tan me'dbhutam ivābhavat ॥03-166-17॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; by him; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; प्रणुन्नानाम् (praṇunnānām) - impelled; set in motion; आशुत्वात् (āśutvāt) - because of speed; शीघ्रगामिनाम् (śīghragāminām) - of those moving swiftly; न (na) - not; अन्वपश्यम् (anvapaśyam) - I saw; तदा (tadā) - then; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; astonishing; इव (iva) - as if; like; आभवत् (ābhavat) - became; was;]
(By that, of them who were impelled, because of speed, of those moving swiftly, I saw not then anything; that to me became as if wonderful.)
By that, I saw nothing at all of those who had been set in motion and were moving quickly, due to their speed; to me, that seemed astonishing. (03-166-17)
ततस्ते दानवास्तत्र योधव्रातान्यनेकशः। विकृतस्वररूपाणि भृशं सर्वाण्यचोदयन् ॥०३-१६६-१८॥
tatas te dānavās tatra yodha-vrātāni anekaśaḥ। vikṛta-svara-rūpāṇi bhṛśam sarvāṇi acodayan ॥03-166-18॥

(Then those Dānavas there, bands of warriors in manifold ways, strange-sounding forms, intensely all they incited.)

tato devarṣayaścaiva dānavarṣigaṇāśca ye। brahmarṣayaśca siddhāśca samājagmur mahāmṛdhe॥03-166-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवर्षयः (devarṣayaḥ) - divine sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दानवर्षिगणाः (dānavarṣigaṇāḥ) - groups of sages among the Dānavas; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; ब्रह्मर्षयः (brahmarṣayaḥ) - brahma sages; च (ca) - and; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; च (ca) - and; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - came together; महामृधे (mahāmṛdhe) - in the great battle;]
(Then divine sages and also groups of sages among the Dānavas who (were there), and brahma sages and perfected beings came together in the great battle.)
Then the divine sages, the groups of Dānava sages, the brahma sages, and the perfected beings all assembled in the great battle. (03-166-22)
ते वै मामनुरूपाभिर्मधुराभिर्जयैषिणः। अस्तुवन्मुनयो वाग्भिर्यथेन्द्रं तारकामये ॥०३-१६६-२३॥
te vai mām-anurūpābhir-madhurābhir-jayaiṣiṇaḥ। astuvan munayo vāgbhir-yathendraṃ tārakāmaye॥03-166-23॥
[ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; अनुरूपाभिः (anurūpābhiḥ) - fitting (ones); मधुराभिः (madhurābhiḥ) - sweet (ones); जयैषिणः (jayaiṣiṇaḥ) - desiring victory; अस्तुवन् (astuvan) - praised; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; यथा (yathā) - just as; इन्द्रम् (indram) - Indra; तारकामये (tārakāmaye) - in (the war for) the Taraka (demon);]
(They indeed me with fitting, sweet, (and) desiring-victory words, praised sages, with words, just as Indra in (the war for) Taraka.)
Those sages indeed praised me with fitting and sweet words desiring victory, just as they praised Indra in the war against Tāraka. (03-166-23)
