ततो निवातकवचाः सर्वे वेगेन भारत। अभ्यद्रवन्मां सहिताः प्रगृहीतायुधा रणे ॥०३-१६७-१॥
tato nivātakavacāḥ sarve vegena bhārata। abhyadravan māṃ sahitāḥ pragṛhītāyudhā raṇe ॥03-167-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavacas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अभ्यद्रवन् (abhyadravan) - rushed towards; माम् (mām) - me; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; प्रगृहीतायुधाः (pragṛhītāyudhāḥ) - arms-in-hand; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Then the Nivātakavacas all with speed, O Bhārata, rushed towards me together, arms-in-hand, in battle.)
Then, O Bhārata, all the Nivātakavacas, armed and together, rushed toward me with speed in the battle. (03-167-1)
आच्छिद्य रथपन्थानमुत्क्रोशन्तो महारथाः। आवृत्य सर्वतस्ते मां शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥०३-१६७-२॥
ācchidya rathapanthānam utkrośanto mahārathāḥ। āvṛtya sarvataste māṃ śaravarṣairavākiran॥03-167-2॥

(Having blocked the chariot path, shouting aloud, the great warriors, having surrounded from all sides, they covered me with showers of arrows.)
The great warriors shouted loudly as they blocked the chariot path. Surrounding me from all sides, they covered me with showers of arrows. (03-167-2)
ततोऽपरे महावीर्याः शूलपट्टिशपाणयः। शूलानि च भुशुण्डीश्च मुमुचुर्दानवा मयि ॥०३-१६७-३॥
tato'pare mahāvīryāḥ śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ। śūlāni ca bhuśuṇḍīś ca mumucur dānavā mayi॥03-167-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपरे (apare) - others; महावीर्याः (mahāvīryāḥ) - of great strength; शूलपट्टिशपाणयः (śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ) - holding spears and pattiśas; शूलानि (śūlāni) - spears; च (ca) - and; भुशुण्डीः (bhuśuṇḍīḥ) - slings; च (ca) - and; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - they released; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; मयि (mayi) - at me;]
(Then others, of great strength, holding spears and pattiśas, the Dānavas, released spears and slings at me.)
Then other powerful Dānavas, holding spears and pattiśas, hurled spears and slings at me. (03-167-3)
तच्छूलवर्षं सुमहद्गदाशक्तिसमाकुलम्। अनिशं सृज्यमानं तैरपतन्मद्रथोपरि ॥०३-१६७-४॥
tac chūla-varṣaṃ sumahat gadā-śakti-samākulam। aniśaṃ sṛjyamānaṃ tair apatan mad-rathopari॥03-167-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; शूलवर्षम् (śūla-varṣam) - shower of spears; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; गदा (gadā) - maces; शक्ति (śakti) - spears; समाकुलम् (samākulam) - filled with; अनिशम् (aniśam) - without ceasing; सृज्यमानम् (sṛjyamānam) - being hurled; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; मद् (mad) - my; रथ (ratha) - chariot; उपरि (upari) - upon;]
(That shower of spears, very great, filled with maces and spears, being ceaselessly hurled by them, fell upon my chariot.)
That very great shower of spears, thick with maces and spears and ceaselessly hurled by them, fell upon my chariot. (3-167-4)
अन्ये मामभ्यधावन्त निवातकवचा युधि। शितशस्त्रायुधा रौद्राः कालरूपाः प्रहारिणः ॥०३-१६७-५॥
anye mām abhyadhāvanta nivātakavacā yudhi । śitaśastrāyudhā raudrāḥ kālarūpāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ॥03-167-5॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; माम् (mām) - me; अभ्यधावन्त (abhyadhāvanta) - approached; निवातकवचा (nivātakavacā) - wearing armor impervious to wind; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; शितशस्त्रायुधा (śitaśastrāyudhā) - bearing sharp weapons; रौद्राः (raudrāḥ) - terrible; कालरूपाः (kālarūpāḥ) - death-like in form; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - strikers;]
(Others me approached, wearing armor impervious to wind in battle, bearing sharp weapons, terrible, death-like in form, strikers.)
Others, who wore armor impervious to wind, approached me in battle—armed with sharp weapons, terrible, death-like in form, and skilled in striking. (03-167-5)
तानहं विविधैर्बाणैर्वेगवद्भिरजिह्मगैः। गाण्डीवमुक्तैरभ्यघ्नमेकैकं दशभिर्मृधे ॥ ते कृता विमुखाः सर्वे मत्प्रयुक्तैः शिलाशितैः ॥०३-१६७-६॥
tān ahaṃ vividhair bāṇair vegavadbhiḥ ajihmagaiḥ। gāṇḍīvamuktaiḥ abhyaghnam ekaikam daśabhiḥ mṛdhe॥ te kṛtā vimukhāḥ sarve matprayuktaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ॥03-167-6॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; वेगवद्भिः (vegavadbhiḥ) - endowed with speed; अजिह्मगैः (ajihmagaiḥ) - not crooked in motion; गाण्डीवमुक्तैः (gāṇḍīvamuktaiḥ) - released from the Gāṇḍīva; अभ्यघ्नम् (abhyaghnam) - I struck; एकैकम् (ekaikam) - each one; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten (arrows); मृधे (mṛdhe) - in battle; ते (te) - they; कृता (kṛtā) - were made; विमुखाः (vimukhāḥ) - turned away; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मत्प्रयुक्तैः (matprayuktaiḥ) - discharged by me; शिलाशितैः (śilāśitaiḥ) - tipped with stone (heads);]
(Them I, with various arrows endowed with speed and unfailing in motion, released from the Gāṇḍīva, struck each one with ten (arrows) in battle. They were all made to turn back by the stone-tipped (arrows) discharged by me.)
I struck each of them in battle with ten different arrows, swift and unfailing, released from the Gāṇḍīva. All of them were turned away by the stone-tipped arrows discharged by me. (03-167-6)
ततो मातलिना तूर्णं हयास्ते सम्प्रचोदिताः। रथमार्गाद्बहूंस्तत्र विचेरुर्वातरंहसः ॥ सुसंयता मातलिना प्रामथ्नन्त दितेः सुतान् ॥०३-१६७-७॥
tato mātalinā tūrṇaṃ hayāste sampracoditāḥ। rathamārgādbahūṃstatra vicerurvātaraṃhasaḥ॥ susaṃyatā mātalinā prāmathnanta diteḥ sutān॥03-167-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; मातलिना (mātalinā) - by Mātali; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; ते (te) - those; सम्प्रचोदिताः (sampracoditāḥ) - urged forth; driven together; रथमार्गात् (rathamārgāt) - from the chariot-path; बहून् (bahūn) - many; तत्र (tatra) - there; विचेरुः (viceruḥ) - roamed; moved about; वात-रंहसः (vāta-raṃhasaḥ) - wind-swift; with the speed of wind; सुसंयता (susaṃyatā) - well-reined; well-controlled; मातलिना (mātalinā) - by Mātali; प्रामथ्नन् (prāmathnan) - crushed; overpowered; दितेः (diteḥ) - of Diti; सुतान् (sutān) - sons;]
(Then by Mātali quickly those horses urged forth from the chariot-path many there roamed with wind-swiftness. Well-reined by Mātali they overpowered the sons of Diti.)
Then Mātali quickly urged on the horses, and they left the chariot path, swiftly roaming in many directions like the wind. Well-controlled by Mātali, they overpowered the sons of Diti. (03-167-7)
शतं शतास्ते हरयस्तस्मिन्युक्ता महारथे। तदा मातलिना यत्ता व्यचरन्नल्पका इव ॥०३-१६७-८॥
śataṃ śatās te harayas tasmin yuktā mahārathe। tadā mātalinā yattā vyacaran alpakā iva ॥03-167-8॥
[शतम् (śatam) - one hundred; शताः (śatāḥ) - hundreds; ते (te) - your; हरयः (harayaḥ) - horses; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - yoked; महारथे (mahārathe) - in the great chariot; तदा (tadā) - then; मातलिना (mātalinā) - by Mātali; यत्ताः (yattāḥ) - controlled; व्यचरन् (vyacaran) - moved about; अल्पकाः (alpakāḥ) - small ones; इव (iva) - like;]
(One hundred hundreds your horses in that yoked great chariot then by Mātali controlled moved about like small ones.)
In that great chariot yoked with a hundred hundreds of your horses, then, with Mātali controlling them, they moved about like small ones. (03-167-8)
तेषां चरणपातेन रथनेमिस्वनेन च। मम बाणनिपातैश्च हतास्ते शतशोऽसुराः ॥०३-१६७-९॥
teṣāṃ caraṇapātena rathanemisvanena ca। mama bāṇanipātaiś ca hatās te śataśo'surāḥ ॥03-167-9॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; चरणपातेन (caraṇapātena) - by the falling of the feet; रथ-नेमि-स्वनेन (ratha-nemi-svanena) - by the sound of the chariot-wheels; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - of my; बाण-निपातैः (bāṇa-nipātaiḥ) - by the falls of (my) arrows; च (ca) - and; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; ते (te) - they; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; असुराः (asurāḥ) - asuras;]
(Of them by the falling of (their) feet, by the sound of the chariot-wheels, and by the falls of my arrows also, killed they by hundreds asuras.)
By the falling of their feet, the sound of chariot-wheels, and also by the impact of my arrows, those asuras were killed by the hundreds. (03-167-9)
गतासवस्तथा चान्ये प्रगृहीतशरासनाः। हतसारथयस्तत्र व्यकृष्यन्त तुरङ्गमैः ॥०३-१६७-१०॥
gatāsavastathā cānye pragṛhītaśarāśanāḥ। hatasārathayastatra vyakṛṣyanta turaṅgamaiḥ॥03-167-10॥
[गतासवः (gatāsavaḥ) - whose life-breaths had departed; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; प्रगृहीतशरासनाः (pragṛhītaśarāśanāḥ) - with bows grasped; हतसारथयः (hatasārathayaḥ) - whose charioteers were slain; तत्र (tatra) - there; वYakृष्यन्त (vyakṛṣyanta) - were being dragged; तुरङ्गमैः (turaṅgamaiḥ) - by horses;]
(Whose life-breaths had departed, thus and others with bows grasped, whose charioteers were slain, there were being dragged by horses.)
There, others—who still held their bows but whose life had departed, and whose charioteers were slain—were being dragged by the horses. (03-167-10)
ते दिशो विदिशः सर्वाः प्रतिरुध्य प्रहारिणः। निघ्नन्ति विविधैः शस्त्रैस्ततो मे व्यथितं मनः ॥०३-१६७-११॥
te diśo vidiśaḥ sarvāḥ pratirudhya prahāriṇaḥ। nighnanti vividhaiḥ śastraiḥ tato me vyathitaṃ manaḥ॥03-167-11॥
[ते (te) - they; दिशः (diśaḥ) - quarters (directions); विदिशः (vidiśaḥ) - intermediate directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रतिरुध्य (pratirudhya) - having blocked; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - the attackers; निघ्नन्ति (nighnanti) - are striking; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; शस्त्रैः (śastraiḥ) - with weapons; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; मे (me) - my; व्यथितं (vyathitaṃ) - distressed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(They, all quarters and intermediate directions having been blocked, the attackers are striking with various weapons; therefore my mind is distressed.)
They, having blocked all the directions and intermediate directions, the attackers strike with various weapons; therefore my mind is troubled. (03-167-11)
ततोऽहं मातलेर्वीर्यमपश्यं परमाद्भुतम्। अश्वांस्तथा वेगवतो यदयत्नादधारयत् ॥०३-१६७-१२॥
tato'haṃ mātalervīryamapaśyaṃ paramādbhutam। aśvāṃstathā vegavato yadayatnādadhārayat ॥03-167-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; मातलेः (mātaleḥ) - of Mātali; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - power; अपश्यं (apaśyaṃ) - (I) saw; परम् (param) - supreme; आद्भुतम् (ādbhutam) - wonderful; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; तथा (tathā) - in such a way; वेगवत: (vegavataḥ) - swift; यत् (yat) - which; अयत्नात् (ayatnāt) - without effort; अधारयत् (adhārayat) - (he) controlled;]
(Then I saw the power of Mātali, supreme and wonderful; thus (he) controlled the swift horses, which (he did) without effort.)
Then I saw Mātali's supreme and marvelous power, as he controlled those swift horses effortlessly. (03-167-12)
ततोऽहं लघुभिश्चित्रैरस्त्रैस्तानसुरान्रणे। सायुधानच्छिनं राजञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०३-१६७-१३॥
tato'ham laghubhiś citrair astraiḥ tān asurān raṇe। sāyudhān acchinam rājan śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥03-167-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; लघुभिः (laghubhiḥ) - with light (quick) (weapons); चित्रैः (citraiḥ) - varied; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with missiles; तान् (tān) - those; असुरान् (asurān) - asuras (demons); रणे (raṇe) - in battle; सायुधान् (sāyudhān) - armed; अच्छिनम् (acchinam) - I destroyed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Then I, with light and varied missiles, those asuras in battle, armed, I destroyed, O king, by hundreds and by thousands.)
Then, O king, I destroyed those armed asuras in battle with light and varied missiles, by hundreds and thousands. (03-167-13)
एवं मे चरतस्तत्र सर्वयत्नेन शत्रुहन्। प्रीतिमानभवद्वीरो मातलिः शक्रसारथिः ॥०३-१६७-१४॥
evaṃ me caratas tatra sarvayatnena śatruhan। prītimān abhavat vīraḥ mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ॥03-167-14॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; मे (me) - of me; चरतः (caratas) - moving; तत्र (tatra) - there; सर्वयत्नेन (sarvayatnena) - with all effort; शत्रुहन् (śatruhan) - destroyer of enemies; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - pleased; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; शक्रसारथिः (śakrasārathiḥ) - the charioteer of Śakra;]
(Thus, of me moving there with all effort, destroyer of enemies, pleased became the hero Mātali, the charioteer of Śakra.)
Thus, as I moved there with all my effort, the hero Mātali, charioteer of Śakra and destroyer of enemies, became pleased. (03-167-14)
वध्यमानास्ततस्ते तु हयैस्तेन रथेन च। अगमन्प्रक्षयं केचिन्न्यवर्तन्त तथापरे ॥०३-१६७-१५॥
vadhyamānās tatas te tu hayais tena rathena ca। agaman prakṣayam kecin nyavartanta tathā apare ॥03-167-15॥
[वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - with horses; तेन (tena) - by that; रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; च (ca) - and; अगमन् (agaman) - went; प्रक्षयम् (prakṣayam) - towards destruction; केचित् (kecit) - some; न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - turned back; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरे (apare) - others;]
(Being slain then, they but with horses, by that chariot and, some went towards destruction, others likewise turned back.)
Then, while being slain by that chariot and its horses, some of them went towards destruction, while others likewise turned back. (03-167-15)
स्पर्धमाना इवास्माभिर्निवातकवचा रणे। शरवर्षैर्महद्भिर्मां समन्तात्प्रत्यवारयन् ॥०३-१६७-१६॥
spardhamānā ivāsmābhirnivātakavacā raṇe। śaravarṣairmahadbhirmāṃ samantātpratyavārayan ॥03-167-16॥
[स्पर्धमाना (spardhamānāḥ) - competing; इव (iva) - as if; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - with us; निवातकवचा (nivātakavacāḥ) - Nivātakavacas (name of a group); रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शरवर्षैः (śara-varṣaiḥ) - with arrow-showers; महद्भिः (mahadbhiḥ) - great; माम् (mām) - me; समन्तात् (samantāt) - from all sides; प्रत्यवारयन् (pratyavārayan) - they repulsed;]
(Competing as if with us, the Nivātakavacas in battle with great showers of arrows from all sides repulsed me.)

ततोऽहं लघुभिश्चित्रैर्ब्रह्मास्त्रपरिमन्त्रितैः। व्यधमं सायकैराशु शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०३-१६७-१७॥
tato'haṁ laghubhiś citrair brahmāstra-parimantritaiḥ। vyadhamaṁ sāyakair āśu śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ॥03-167-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; लघुभिः (laghubhiḥ) - with light; चित्रैः (citraiḥ) - varied; ब्रह्मास्त्रपरिमन्त्रितैः (brahmāstra-parimantritaiḥ) - enchanted with brahmāstra incantations; व्यधम् (vyadham) - I discharged; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - with arrows; आशु (āśu) - swiftly; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Then I, with light and varied arrows enchanted with brahmāstra incantations, I discharged with arrows swiftly by hundreds and then by thousands.)
Then I swiftly discharged hundreds and then thousands of light, varied arrows, all empowered by the brahmāstra formulas. (03-167-17)
ततः सम्पीड्यमानास्ते क्रोधाविष्टा महासुराः। अपीडयन्मां सहिताः शरशूलासिवृष्टिभिः ॥०३-१६७-१८॥
tataḥ sampīḍyamānās te krodhāviṣṭā mahāsurāḥ। apīḍayan māṃ sahitāḥ śaraśūlāsivṛṣṭibhiḥ॥03-167-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्पीड्यमानाः (sampīḍyamānāḥ) - being pressed; ते (te) - they; क्रोधाविष्टाः (krodhāviṣṭāḥ) - overcome with anger; महासुराः (mahāsurāḥ) - great asuras (demons); अपीडयन् (apīḍayan) - oppressed; माम् (mām) - me; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; शरशूलासिवृष्टिभिः (śaraśūlāsivṛṣṭibhiḥ) - with showers of arrows, spears, and swords;]
(Then those great asuras, being pressed, overcome with anger, together oppressed me with showers of arrows, spears, and swords.)
Then those great asuras, overpowered by anger as they were beset, all together attacked me with a rain of arrows, spears, and swords. (03-167-18)
ततोऽहमस्त्रमातिष्ठं परमं तिग्मतेजसम्। दयितं देवराजस्य माधवं नाम भारत ॥०३-१६७-१९॥
tato'ham astram atiṣṭhaṃ paramaṃ tigmatejasam। dayitaṃ devarājasya mādhavaṃ nāma bhārata ॥03-167-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; आतिष्ठम् (ātiṣṭham) - took up; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; तिग्मतेजसम् (tigmatejasam) - of fierce energy; दयितम् (dayitam) - beloved; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of the gods; माधवम् (mādhavam) - Madhava; नाम (nāma) - named; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then I took up the weapon, the supreme, of fierce energy, beloved of the king of the gods, named Madhava, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, I took up the supreme weapon of fierce energy called 'Madhava,' which is beloved of the king of the gods. (03-167-19)
ततः खड्गांस्त्रिशूलांश्च तोमरांश्च सहस्रशः। अस्त्रवीर्येण शतधा तैर्मुक्तानहमच्छिनम् ॥०३-१६७-२०॥
tataḥ khaḍgāṁs triśūlāṁś ca tomarāṁś ca sahasraśaḥ। astravīryeṇa śatadhā tair muktān aham acchinam ॥03-167-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; खड्गान् (khaḍgān) - swords; त्रिशूलान् (triśūlān) - tridents; च (ca) - and; तोमरान् (tomarān) - javelins; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands; अस्त्रवीर्येण (astravīryeṇa) - by the power of weapons; शतधा (śatadhā) - in a hundred pieces; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; मुक्तान् (muktān) - released; अहम् (aham) - I; अच्छिनम् (acchinam) - cut (them apart);]
(Then swords, tridents and javelins in thousands, by the power of weapons, into a hundred pieces, by those released, I cut (them apart).)
Then I cut apart, by the power of weapons, thousands of swords, tridents and javelins released at me, shattering them into a hundred pieces. (03-167-20)
छित्त्वा प्रहरणान्येषां ततस्तानपि सर्वशः। प्रत्यविध्यमहं रोषाद्दशभिर्दशभिः शरैः ॥०३-१६७-२१॥
chittvā praharaṇāny eṣāṃ tatas tān api sarvaśaḥ। pratyavidhyam ahaṃ roṣād daśabhir daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ॥03-167-21॥
[छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut; प्रहरणानि (praharaṇāni) - weapons; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; प्रत्यविध्यम् (pratyavidhyam) - I pierced; अहम् (aham) - I; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; दशभिः दशभिः (daśabhiḥ daśabhiḥ) - with ten by ten; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Having cut the weapons of these, then them also entirely, I pierced, I, from anger, with ten by ten arrows.)
Having cut the weapons of these, then I also pierced all of them entirely with ten arrows each, out of anger. (03-167-21)
गाण्डीवाद्धि तदा सङ्ख्ये यथा भ्रमरपङ्क्तयः। निष्पतन्ति तथा बाणास्तन्मातलिरपूजयत् ॥०३-१६७-२२॥
gāṇḍīvāddhi tadā saṅkhye yathā bhramara-paṅktayaḥ। niṣpatanti tathā bāṇās tan-mātalir apūjayat ॥03-167-22॥
[गाण्डीवाद्धि (gāṇḍīvāt dhi) - from (the bow) Gāṇḍīva; indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; यथा (yathā) - just as; भ्रमरपङ्क्तयः (bhramara-paṅktayaḥ) - rows of bees; निष्पतन्ति (niṣpatanti) - emerge; तथा (tathā) - so; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; तन्मातलिः (tan-mātaliḥ) - then Mātali; अपूजयत् (apūjayat) - honoured;]
(From Gāṇḍīva, indeed, then, in battle, just as rows of bees emerge, so arrows; then Mātali honoured.)
Then, from Gāṇḍīva in battle, arrows emerged just like rows of bees, and then Mātali honoured that.
तेषामपि तु बाणास्ते बहुत्वाच्छलभा इव। अवाकिरन्मां बलवत्तानहं व्यधमं शरैः ॥०३-१६७-२३॥
teṣām api tu bāṇās te bahutvāc chalabhā iva | avākiran māṃ balavattān ahaṃ vyadhamam śaraiḥ ॥03-167-23॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अपि (api) - also; तु (tu) - but; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; ते (te) - those; बहुत्वात् (bahutvāt) - due to abundance; शलभाः (chalabhāḥ) - locusts; इव (iva) - like; अवाकिरन् (avākiran) - scattered; माम् (mām) - me; बलवत् (balavat) - strong; तान् (tān) - those; अहम् (aham) - I; व्यधम् (vyadhamam) - repelled; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(Of them also but those arrows, due to abundance, like locusts, scattered me; those strong ones, I repelled with arrows.)
Even so, their arrows, in great numbers, like locusts, showered upon me; but I repelled those strong ones with my arrows. (03-167-23)
वध्यमानास्ततस्ते तु निवातकवचाः पुनः। शरवर्षैर्महद्भिर्मां समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥०३-१६७-२४॥
vadhyamānās tatas te tu nivātakavacāḥ punaḥ। śaravarṣair mahadbhir māṁ samantāt paryavārayan ॥03-167-24॥
[वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being struck (or slain); ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavaca (a class of demons); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शरवर्षैः (śaravarṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; महद्भिः (mahadbhiḥ) - great; माम् (mām) - me; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - encompassed (or covered);]
(Being struck then, they but the Nivātakavacas again with great showers of arrows me on all sides encompassed.)
Then, being struck, the Nivātakavacas again surrounded me on all sides with great showers of arrows. (03-167-24)
शरवेगान्निहत्याहमस्त्रैः शरविघातिभिः। ज्वलद्भिः परमैः शीघ्रैस्तानविध्यं सहस्रशः ॥०३-१६७-२५॥
śaravegān nihatyāham astraiḥ śaravighātibhiḥ। jvaladbhiḥ paramaiḥ śīghraiz tān avidhyaṁ sahasraśaḥ॥03-167-25॥
[शरवेगान् (śaravegān) - arrow-speed (forces); निहत्य (nihatya) - having struck down; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by missiles; शरविघातिभिः (śaravighātibhiḥ) - with arrow-striking (weapons); ज्वलद्भिः (jvaladbhiḥ) - burning; परमैः (paramaiḥ) - supreme; शीघ्रैः (śīghraiḥ) - swift; तान् (tān) - them; अविध्यं (avidhyam) - I pierced; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Arrow-speeds having struck down I, by missiles with arrow-striking (weapons), burning, supreme, swift, them I pierced by thousands.)
Having struck down the forces moving at arrow-speed, I pierced them by thousands with supreme, burning, swift missiles that strike like arrows. (03-167-25)
तेषां छिन्नानि गात्राणि विसृजन्ति स्म शोणितम्। प्रावृषीवातिवृष्टानि शृङ्गाणीव धराभृताम् ॥०३-१६७-२६॥
teṣāṃ chinnāni gātrāṇi visṛjanti sma śoṇitam। prāvṛṣīva ativṛṣṭāni śṛṅgāṇīva dharābhṛtām॥03-167-26॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; छिन्नानि (chinnāni) - severed; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; विसृजन्ति (visṛjanti) - were shedding; स्म (sma) - indeed; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; प्रावृषि (prāvṛṣi) - in the rainy season; इव (iva) - like; अतिवृष्टानि (ativṛṣṭāni) - excessively rained upon; शृङ्गाणि (śṛṅgāṇi) - horns; इव (iva) - like; धराभृताम् (dharābhṛtām) - of mountains;]
(Of them, the severed limbs indeed were shedding blood, like the excessively rained-upon horns of mountains in the rainy season.)
Their severed limbs were shedding blood, just like the horns of mountains in the rainy season after heavy rain. (03-167-26)
इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शैर्वेगवद्भिरजिह्मगैः। मद्बाणैर्वध्यमानास्ते समुद्विग्नाः स्म दानवाः ॥०३-१६७-२७॥
indrāśanisamasparśair vegavadbhir ajihmagaiḥ। madbāṇair vadhyamānās te samudvignāḥ sma dānavāḥ ॥03-167-27॥
[इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शैः (indrāśanisamasparśaiḥ) - with (those) having a touch like Indra's thunderbolt; वेगवद्भिः (vegavadbhiḥ) - swift; अजिह्मगैः (ajihmagaiḥ) - not moving crookedly; direct; मद्बाणैः (madbāṇaiḥ) - with my arrows; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being struck; ते (te) - those; समुद्विग्नाः (samudvignāḥ) - greatly agitated; स्म (sma) - indeed; (particle of past tense); दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas (demons);]
(With arrows of mine having a touch like Indra's thunderbolt, swift, moving directly, being struck, those Dānavas were greatly agitated indeed.)
Those Dānavas, being struck by my arrows that were swift, direct, and had the impact of Indra's thunderbolt, were greatly agitated. (03-167-27)
शतधा भिन्नदेहान्त्राः क्षीणप्रहरणौजसः। ततो निवातकवचा मामयुध्यन्त मायया ॥०३-१६७-२८॥
śatadhā bhinnadehāntrāḥ kṣīṇapraharaṇaujasaḥ। tato nivātakavacā māmayudhyanta māyayā ॥03-167-28॥
[शतधा (śatadhā) - into a hundred parts; भिन्नदेहान्त्राः (bhinna-dehāntrāḥ) - with torn bodies and entrails; क्षीणप्रहरणौजसः (kṣīṇa-praharaṇaujasaḥ) - weakened in weapons and vigor; ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवातकवचा (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavacas; माम् (mām) - me; अयुध्यन्त (ayudhyanta) - they fought; मायया (māyayā) - by illusion;]
(Into a hundred parts with torn bodies and entrails, weakened in weapons and vigor, then the Nivātakavacas fought with me by illusion.)
Though their bodies and entrails were torn into a hundred pieces and their strength of weapons was diminished, the Nivātakavacas then fought me by means of illusion. (03-167-28)
