Arjuna said.
ततोऽश्मवर्षं सुमहत्प्रादुरासीत्समन्ततः। नगमात्रैर्महाघोरैस्तन्मां दृढमपीडयत् ॥०३-१६८-१॥
tato'śmavarṣaṃ sumahat prādurāsīt samantataḥ। nagamātrair mahāghorais tan māṃ dṛḍham apīḍayat ॥03-168-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अश्मवर्षम् (aśmavarṣam) - stone-rain; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - arose; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; नगमात्रैः (nagamātraiḥ) - mountain-sized; महाघोरैः (mahāghoraiḥ) - very terrible; तत् (tat) - that; माम् (mām) - me; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; अपीडयत् (apīḍayat) - pressed;]
(Then a very great stone-rain arose on all sides. That, with mountain-sized, very terrible (stones), pressed me firmly.)
Then a very great shower of stones arose all around. Those, being mountain-sized and very terrible, firmly oppressed me. (03-168-1)
तदहं वज्रसङ्काशैः शरैरिन्द्रास्त्रचोदितैः। अचूर्णयं वेगवद्भिः शतधैकैकमाहवे ॥०३-१६८-२॥
tad ahaṃ vajrasaṅkāśaiḥ śarair indrāstra-coditaiḥ। acūrṇayaṃ vegavadbhiḥ śatadhaikaikam āhave ॥03-168-2॥
[तद् (tad) (tad) - that; अहम् (aham) (aham) - I; वज्रसङ्काशैः (vajrasaṅkāśaiḥ) (vajrasaṅkāśaiḥ) - having the brilliance of thunderbolts; शरैः (śaraiḥ) (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; इन्द्रास्त्रचोदितैः (indrāstra-coditaiḥ) (indrāstra-coditaiḥ) - propelled by Indra's missile; अचूर्णयम् (acūrṇayam) (acūrṇayam) - I crushed; वेगवद्भिः (vegavadbhiḥ) (vegavadbhiḥ) - with those possessing speed; शतधा (śatadhā) (śatadhā) - into a hundred pieces; एकैकम् (ekaikam) (ekaikam) - each one; आहवे (āhave) (āhave) - in battle;]
(That I, with arrows having the brilliance of thunderbolts, propelled by Indra's missile, I crushed with speed each one into a hundred pieces in battle.)
Then I, with arrows as brilliant as thunderbolts, driven by Indra's missile, shattered each one into a hundred pieces with speed in the battle. (03-168-2)
चूर्ण्यमानेऽश्मवर्षे तु पावकः समजायत। तत्राश्मचूर्णमपतत्पावकप्रकरा इव ॥०३-१६८-३॥
cūrṇyamāne'śmavarṣe tu pāvakaḥ samajāyata। tatrāśmacūrṇamapatatpāvakaprakara iva ॥03-168-3॥
[चूर्ण्यमाने (cūrṇyamāne) - (while) being pulverized; अश्मवर्षे (aśmavarṣe) - in (the) stone-rain; तु (tu) - but; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose; तत्र (tatra) - there; अश्मचूर्णम् (aśmacūrṇam) - stone-dust; अपतत् (apatat) - fell; पावकप्रकरा (pāvakaprakaraḥ) - blazing flames (masses of fire); इव (iva) - like;]
(While (it was) being pulverized, in the stone-rain, but fire arose. There, stone-dust fell like blazing flames.)
While the stone-rain was being pulverized, however, fire emerged. There, stone-dust fell like masses of flames. (03-168-3)
ततोऽश्मवर्षे निहते जलवर्षं महत्तरम्। धाराभिरक्षमात्राभिः प्रादुरासीन्ममान्तिके ॥०३-१६८-४॥
tato'śmavarṣe nihate jalavarṣaṁ mahattaram। dhārābhir akṣamātrābhiḥ prādurāsīn mamāntike ॥03-168-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अश्मवर्षे (aśmavarṣe) - of stone-rain; निहते (nihate) - being struck down; जलवर्षम् (jalavarṣam) - rain of water; महत्तरम् (mahattaram) - greater; धाराभिः (dhārābhiḥ) - by streams; अक्षमात्राभिः (akṣamātrābhiḥ) - of the size of dice; प्रादुरासीन्मम (prādurāsīn mama) - appeared for me; अन्तिके (antike) - near;]
(Then, the stone-rain having been struck down, a rain of water, greater, by streams of the size of dice, appeared near me.)
Then, when the hail of stones was checked, there appeared near me an even greater shower of water with streams as large as dice. (03-168-4)
नभसः प्रच्युता धारास्तिग्मवीर्याः सहस्रशः। आवृण्वन्सर्वतो व्योम दिशश्चोपदिशस्तथा ॥०३-१६८-५॥
nabhasaḥ pracyutā dhārās tigmavīryāḥ sahasraśaḥ। āvṛṇvan sarvato vyoma diśaś ca upadiśas tathā॥03-168-5॥
[नभसः (nabhasaḥ) - of the sky; प्रच्युता (pracyutā) - fallen down; धाराः (dhārāḥ) - streams; तिग्मवीर्याः (tigmavīryāḥ) - of fierce power; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; आवृण्वन् (āvṛṇvan) - covered; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; व्योम (vyoma) - the sky; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; च (ca) - and; उपदिशः (upadiśaḥ) - the intermediate directions; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Of the sky, fallen down streams of fierce power by thousands, covering on all sides the sky, the directions and the intermediate directions thus.)
Thousands of streams of fierce power, falling from the sky, covered the sky on all sides, as well as all the directions and intermediate directions. (03-168-5)
धाराणां च निपातेन वायोर्विस्फूर्जितेन च। गर्जितेन च दैत्यानां न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥०३-१६८-६॥
dhārāṇāṃ ca nipātena vāyor visphūrjitena ca| garjitena ca daityānāṃ na prājñāyata kiñcana ॥03-168-6॥
[धाराणां (dhārāṇām) - of streams; (plural genetive) च (ca) - and; निपातेन (nipātena) - by fall; (instrumental singular) वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; (genitive singular) विस्फूर्जितेन (visphūrjitena) - by roaring; (instrumental singular) च (ca) - and; गर्जितेन (garjitena) - by the thunder; (instrumental singular) च (ca) - and; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; (genitive plural) न (na) - not; प्राज्ञायत (prājñāyata) - was perceived; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(By the fall of streams and by the roaring of wind and by the thunder of the Daityas, nothing could be perceived.)
Nothing at all could be perceived because of the fall of streams, the roaring wind, and the thunderous cries of the Daityas. (03-168-6)
धारा दिवि च सम्बद्धा वसुधायां च सर्वशः। व्यामोहयन्त मां तत्र निपतन्त्योऽनिशं भुवि ॥०३-१६८-७॥
dhārā divi ca sambaddhā vasudhāyāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ। vyāmohayanta māṃ tatra nipatantyo'niśaṃ bhuvi ॥03-168-7॥
[धारा (dhārā) - streams; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; च (ca) - and; सम्बद्धा (sambaddhā) - connected; वसुधायां (vasudhāyām) - on the earth; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere; व्यामोहयन्त (vyāmohayanta) - bewildering; मां (māṃ) - me; तत्र (tatra) - there; निपतन्त्यः (nipatantyaḥ) - falling; अनिशम् (aniśam) - continuously; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Streams in the sky and also connected on the earth everywhere, bewildering me there, falling continuously on the ground.)
The streams, connected both in the sky and everywhere on the earth, bewilder me there as they continuously fall upon the ground. (03-168-7)
तत्रोपदिष्टमिन्द्रेण दिव्यमस्त्रं विशोषणम्। दीप्तं प्राहिणवं घोरमशुष्यत्तेन तज्जलम् ॥०३-१६८-८॥
tatropadiṣṭamindreṇa divyam astraṃ viśoṣaṇam। dīptaṃ prāhiṇavaṃ ghoram aśuṣyat tena taj jalam॥03-168-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; उपदिष्टम् (upadiṣṭam) - instructed; इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; विशोषणम् (viśoṣaṇam) - drying; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - shining; प्राहिणवम् (prāhiṇavam) - terrible; घोरम् (ghoram) - fearsome; अशुष्यत् (aśuṣyat) - was dried; तेन (tena) - by that; तत् (tat) - that; जलम् (jalam) - water;]
(There instructed by Indra, divine weapon for drying, shining, terrible, fearsome, was dried by that, that water.)
There, the divine weapon for drying, instructed by Indra—shining, terrible, and fearsome—by that, the water was dried up. (03-168-8)
हतेऽश्मवर्षे तु मया जलवर्षे च शोषिते। मुमुचुर्दानवा मायामग्निं वायुं च मानद ॥०३-१६८-९॥
hate'śmavarṣe tu mayā jalavarṣe ca śoṣite. mumucur dānavā māyām agniṃ vāyuṃ ca mānada ॥03-168-9॥
[हते (hate) - having been destroyed; अश्मवर्षे (aśmavarṣe) - stone-rain; तु (tu) - but; मया (mayā) - by me; जलवर्षे (jalavarṣe) - water-rain; च (ca) - and; शोषिते (śoṣite) - having been dried up; मुमुचुः (mumucuḥ) - they released; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire; वायुम् (vāyuṃ) - wind; च (ca) - and; मानद (mānada) - O bestower of honor;]
(Having destroyed the shower of stones by me, and the shower of water having been dried up, the Dānavas released illusion, fire, and wind, O bestower of honor.)
But after I destroyed the stone rain and dried up the rain of water, the Dānavas, O bestower of honor, released magical fire and wind. (03-168-9)
ततोऽहमग्निं व्यधमं सलिलास्त्रेण सर्वशः। शैलेन च महास्त्रेण वायोर्वेगमधारयम् ॥०३-१६८-१०॥
tato'ham agniṃ vyadhamaṃ salilāstreṇa sarvaśaḥ। śailena ca mahāstreṇa vāyor vegam adhārayam ॥03-168-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire (accusative singular); व्यधमम् (vyadhamaṃ) - I repelled; सलिल-अस्त्रेण (salila-astreṇa) - with the water-missile; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; शैलेन (śailena) - with (the) mountain (missile); च (ca) - and; महा-अस्त्रेण (mahā-astreṇa) - with the great missile; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; वेगम् (vegam) - force; अधारयम् (adhārayam) - I restrained;]
(Then I entirely repelled the fire with the water-weapon; and with the mountain and the great missile, I restrained the force of the wind.)
Then I repelled the fire completely with the water-weapon; and with the mountain and the great missile, I restrained the force of the wind. (03-168-10)
तस्यां प्रतिहतायां तु दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः। प्राकुर्वन्विविधा माया यौगपद्येन भारत ॥०३-१६८-११॥
tasyāṃ pratihatāyāṃ tu dānavā yuddha-durmadāḥ। prākurvan vividhā māyā yaugapadyena bhārata॥03-168-11॥
[तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in her; (locative singular of 'sā': she); प्रतिहतायां (pratihatāyām) - being repulsed; (locative singular feminine of 'pratihata': repulsed, countered); तु (tu) - but; however; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; (demons); युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddha-durmadāḥ) - intoxicated with the fury of battle; very proud in battle; प्राकुर्वन् (prākurvan) - they began to do; they made; विविधा (vividhā) - various; मायाः (māyāḥ) - magical illusions; tricks; यौगपद्येन (yaugapadyena) - simultaneously; at the same time; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; descendant of Bharata (Arjuna, king, or listener);]
(In her being repulsed but the Dānavas, intoxicated with the fury of battle, began to perform various magical illusions simultaneously, O Bhārata.)
But when she was repulsed, O Bhārata, the Dānavas, intoxicated by the fury of battle, began at once to employ various magical illusions. (03-168-11)
ततो वर्षं प्रादुरभूत्सुमहल्लोमहर्षणम्। अस्त्राणां घोररूपाणामग्नेर्वायोस्तथाश्मनाम् ॥०३-१६८-१२॥
tato varṣaṃ prādurabhūtsumahallomaharṣaṇam। astrāṇāṃ ghorarūpāṇāmagnervāyostathāśmanām॥03-168-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वर्षम् (varṣam) - rain; प्रादुरभूत् (prādurabhūt) - arose; सुमहल्लोमहर्षणम् (sumahallomaharṣaṇam) - very great, hair-raising; अस्त्राणाम् (astrāṇām) - of weapons; घोररूपाणाम् (ghorarūpāṇām) - terrible forms; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of fire; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of wind; तथा (tathā) - also; अश्मनाम् (aśmanām) - of stones;]
(Then rain arose, very great, hair-raising, of weapons with terrible forms—of fire, of wind, and also of stones.)
Then there arose a tremendous, terrifying, hair-raising rain of weapons having the dreadful forms of fire, of wind, and of stones. (3-168-12)
सा तु मायामयी वृष्टिः पीडयामास मां युधि। अथ घोरं तमस्तीव्रं प्रादुरासीत्समन्ततः ॥०३-१६८-१३॥
sā tu māyāmayī vṛṣṭiḥ pīḍayāmāsa māṃ yudhi. atha ghoraṃ tamastīvraṃ prādurāsītsamantataḥ ॥03-168-13॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; मायामयी (māyāmayī) - consisting of illusion; वृष्टिः (vṛṣṭiḥ) - rain; पीडयामास (pīḍayāmāsa) - afflicted; माम् (mām) - me; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; अथ (atha) - then; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; तमः (tamas) - darkness; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - appeared; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(She but illusion-made rain afflicted me in battle. Then terrible darkness intense appeared on all sides.)
But that illusion-made rain afflicted me in battle. Then, intense and terrible darkness appeared on all sides. (03-168-13)
तमसा संवृते लोके घोरेण परुषेण च। तुरगा विमुखाश्चासन्प्रास्खलच्चापि मातलिः ॥०३-१६८-१४॥
tamasā saṁvṛte loke ghoreṇa paruṣeṇa ca। turagā vimukhāś cāsan prāskhalac cāpi mātaliḥ॥03-168-14॥
[तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; संवृते (saṁvṛte) - enveloped; लोके (loke) - in the world; घोरेण (ghoreṇa) - by terrible; परुषेण (paruṣeṇa) - by cruel; च (ca) - and; तुरगा (turagā) - horses; विमुखाः (vimukhāḥ) - turned away; च (ca) - and; आसन् (āsan) - were; प्रास्खलत् (prāskhalat) - stumbled; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali;]
(By darkness enveloped in the world, by terrible and cruel, and the horses were turned away, and Mātali also stumbled.)
When the world was enveloped in darkness, terrible and cruel, the horses turned away, and even Mātali stumbled. (03-168-14)
हस्ताद्धिरण्मयश्चास्य प्रतोदः प्रापतद्भुवि। असकृच्चाह मां भीतः क्वासीति भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१६८-१५॥
hastādd hiraṇmayaś cāsya pratodaḥ prāpatad bhuvi। asakṛc cāha māṃ bhītaḥ kvāsīti bharatarṣabha ॥03-168-15॥
[हस्तात् (hastāt) - from the hand; हिरण्मयः (hiraṇmayaḥ) - golden; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; प्रतोदः (pratodaḥ) - goad; प्रापतत् (prāpatat) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; च (ca) - and; आह (āha) - said; माम् (mām) - to me; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - frightened; क्व (kva) - where; असि (asi) - are (you); इति (iti) - thus; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas;]
(From his hand, the golden goad fell on the ground. Repeatedly and frightened, he said to me, "Where are you?" thus, O bull of the Bharatas.)
The golden goad fell to the ground from his hand. Frightened, he kept saying to me, "Where are you?" O best of the Bharatas. (03-168-15)
मां च भीराविशत्तीव्रा तस्मिन्विगतचेतसि। स च मां विगतज्ञानः सन्त्रस्त इदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१६८-१६॥
māṃ ca bhīrāviśattīvrā tasminvigatacētasi। sa ca māṃ vigatajñānaḥ santrasta idamabravīt ॥03-168-16॥
[मां (māṃ) - me; च (ca) - and; भीरा (bhīrā) - fear; अविशत् (aviśat) - entered; तीव्रा (tīvrā) - intense; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; विगतचेतसि (vigatacētasi) - who had lost consciousness; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; मां (māṃ) - me; विगतज्ञानः (vigatajñānaḥ) - deprived of knowledge; सन्त्रस्त (santrasta) - terrified; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Me and fear intense entered; in him who had lost consciousness. He and me, deprived of knowledge, terrified, this said.)
Intense fear entered me also as he lay unconscious. He too, deprived of knowledge and terrified, said this to me. (03-168-16)
सुराणामसुराणां च सङ्ग्रामः सुमहानभूत्। अमृतार्थे पुरा पार्थ स च दृष्टो मयानघ ॥०३-१६८-१७॥
surāṇāmasurāṇāṃ ca saṅgrāmaḥ sumahānabhūt. amṛtārthe purā pārtha sa ca dṛṣṭo mayānagha ॥03-168-17॥
[सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; असुराणां (asurāṇām) - of the asuras; च (ca) - and; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; अमृतार्थे (amṛtārthe) - for the sake of amṛta; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Partha; सः (saḥ) - that (battle); च (ca) - and; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; मया (mayā) - by me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Of the gods, of the asuras and battle very great was; for the sake of amṛta, formerly, O Partha, that (battle) and was seen by me, O sinless one (03-168-17))
O Partha, a very great battle between gods and asuras once took place for the sake of amṛta; O sinless one, I saw that battle myself (03-168-17)
शम्बरस्य वधे चापि सङ्ग्रामः सुमहानभूत्। सारथ्यं देवराजस्य तत्रापि कृतवानहम् ॥०३-१६८-१८॥
śambarasya vadhe cāpi saṅgrāmaḥ sumahānabhūt। sārathyaṃ devarājasya tatrāpi kṛtavānaham ॥03-168-18॥
[शम्बरस्य (śambarasya) - of Śambara; वधे (vadhe) - in the slaying; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अभूत् (abhūt) - there was; सारथ्यं (sārathyaṃ) - charioteership; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of the gods; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - I did; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(In the slaying of Śambara and also, there was a very great battle; charioteership of the king of the gods there also I did.)
There was a very great battle during the slaying of Śambara; there too, I acted as the charioteer for the king of the gods. (03-168-18)
तथैव वृत्रस्य वधे सङ्गृहीता हया मया। वैरोचनेर्मया युद्धं दृष्टं चापि सुदारुणम् ॥०३-१६८-१९॥
tathaiva vṛtrasya vadhe saṅgṛhītā hayā mayā। vairocaner mayā yuddhaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ cāpi sudāruṇam॥03-168-19॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in just the same way; similarly; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; वधे (vadhe) - in the killing; in the slaughter; सङ्गृहीता (saṅgṛhītā) - collected; assembled; gathered; हया (hayā) - horses; मया (mayā) - by me; वैरोचनेः (vairocaner) - of Vairocana (son of Virocana, i.e., Bali); मया (mayā) - by me; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुदारुणम् (sudāruṇam) - very terrible;]
(Similarly, in the killing of Vṛtra, the horses were assembled by me. The battle of Vairocana was also seen by me, and indeed very terrible.)
In the same way, at the slaying of Vṛtra, I assembled the horses. I also saw the dreadful battle of Vairocana. (03-168-19)
एते मया महाघोराः सङ्ग्रामाः पर्युपासिताः। न चापि विगतज्ञानो भूतपूर्वोऽस्मि पाण्डव ॥०३-१६८-२०॥
ete mayā mahāghorāḥ saṅgrāmāḥ paryupāsitāḥ। na cāpi vigatajñāno bhūtapūrvo'smi pāṇḍava॥03-168-20॥
[एते (ete) - these; मया (mayā) - by me; महाघोराः (mahāghorāḥ) - very terrible; सङ्ग्रामाः (saṅgrāmāḥ) - battles; पर्युपासिताः (paryupāsitāḥ) - have been approached; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; विगतज्ञानः (vigatajñānaḥ) - devoid of sense; भूतपूर्वः (bhūtapūrvaḥ) - ever before; अस्मि (asmi) - am; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(These by me very terrible battles have been approached. Not and even devoid of sense ever before am O Pāṇḍava.)
These very terrible battles have been encountered by me. O Pāṇḍava, never before have I been devoid of sense. (03-168-20)
पितामहेन संहारः प्रजानां विहितो ध्रुवम्। न हि युद्धमिदं युक्तमन्यत्र जगतः क्षयात् ॥०३-१६८-२१॥
pitāmahen saṃhāraḥ prajānāṃ vihito dhruvam। na hi yuddham idaṃ yuktam anyatra jagataḥ kṣayāt॥03-168-21॥
[पितामहेन (pitāmahen) - by the grandsire (Bheeshma); संहारः (saṃhāraḥ) - destruction; प्रजानां (prajānāṃ) - of the beings; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - ordained; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; इदं (idaṃ) - this; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - otherwise; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; क्षयात् (kṣayāt) - than the destruction;]
(By the grandsire, destruction of beings is certainly ordained. Indeed, this battle is not proper except for the destruction of the world.)
Destruction of beings has certainly been ordained by the grandsire. Indeed, this battle is justified only for the destruction of the world. (03-168-21)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना। मोहयिष्यन्दानवानामहं मायामयं बलम् ॥०३-१६८-२२॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā saṃstabhya ātmānam ātmanā| mohayiṣyāmi dānavānāṃ ahaṃ māyāmayaṃ balam ॥03-168-22॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनं (tadvacanam) - that statement; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; संस्तभ्य (saṃstabhya) - having composed; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by self; मोहयिष्य (mohayiṣya) - I shall bewilder; न्दानवानाम् (dānāvānām) - of the Dānavas; अहम् (aham) - I; मायामयं (māyāmayaṃ) - full of illusion; बलम् (balam) - power;]
(Of him that statement having heard, having composed self by self, I shall bewilder the Dānavas' power full of illusion.)
Having heard his words, steadying myself by my own self, I will confound the illusory power of the Dānavas. (03-168-22)
अब्रुवं मातलिं भीतं पश्य मे भुजयोर्बलम्। अस्त्राणां च प्रभावं मे धनुषो गाण्डिवस्य च ॥०३-१६८-२३॥
abruvaṁ mātaliṁ bhītaṁ paśya me bhujayorbalam। astrāṇāṁ ca prabhāvaṁ me dhanuṣo gāṇḍivasya ca ॥03-168-23॥
[अब्रुवं (abruvaṁ) - I said; मातलिं (mātaliṁ) - to Mātali; भीतं (bhītam) - afraid; पश्य (paśya) - behold; मे (me) - my; भुजयोः (bhujayoḥ) - of the two arms; बलम् (balam) - strength; अस्त्राणां (astrāṇām) - of the missiles; च (ca) - and; प्रभावं (prabhāvam) - power; मे (me) - my; धनुषः (dhanuṣaḥ) - of the bow; गाण्डिवस्य (gāṇḍivasya) - of Gāṇḍīva; च (ca) - and;]
(I said to Mātali, who was afraid, "Behold my two arms' strength, and the power of my missiles and also of my bow, Gāṇḍīva." (03-168-23))
I said to Mātali, who was frightened, "Look at the strength of my arms, and the power of my weapons and my bow Gāṇḍīva." (03-168-23)
अद्यास्त्रमाययैतेषां मायामेतां सुदारुणाम्। विनिहन्मि तमश्चोग्रं मा भैः सूत स्थिरो भव ॥०३-१६८-२४॥
adyāstramāyayaitēṣāṁ māyāmētāṁ sudāruṇām। vinihanmi tamaścōgraṁ mā bhaiḥ sūta sthirō bhava ॥03-168-24॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; अस्त्रमायया (astramāyayā) - by means of the magic of weapons; एतेषाम् (eteṣām) - of these; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; एताम् (etām) - this; सुदारुणाम् (sudāruṇām) - very terrible; विनिहन्मि (vinihanmi) - I will completely destroy; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; च (ca) - and; उग्रम् (ugram) - fierce; मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; सूत (sūta) - charioteer; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - steadfast; भव (bhava) - be;]
(Today, by means of the magic of weapons, of these, illusion, this very terrible, I will completely destroy; darkness also fierce; do not fear; charioteer, steadfast be.)
Today, by the magic of weapons, I will utterly destroy this most terrible illusion of these (enemies) and this fierce darkness; do not be afraid, charioteer – remain steadfast. (03-168-24)
एवमुक्त्वाहमसृजमस्त्रमायां नराधिप। मोहनीं सर्वशत्रूणां हिताय त्रिदिवौकसाम् ॥०३-१६८-२५॥
evam uktvā aham asṛjam astram āyām narādhipa। mohanīṃ sarvaśatrūṇāṃ hitāya tridivaukasām ॥03-168-25॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अहम् (aham) - I; असृजम् (asṛjam) - sent forth; अस्त्रं (astram) - weapon; आयां (āyām) - of illusion; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; मोहनीं (mohanīṃ) - deluding; सर्वशत्रूणां (sarvaśatrūṇām) - of all enemies; हिताय (hitāya) - for the benefit; त्रिदिवौकसाम् (tridivaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven;]
(Thus, having spoken, I sent forth the weapon of illusion, O king, the deluding (weapon) of all enemies, for the benefit of the dwellers of heaven.)
Having thus spoken, O king, I released the illusory weapon that confounds all enemies, for the good of the heavenly beings. (03-168-25)
पीड्यमानासु मायासु तासु तास्वसुरेश्वराः। पुनर्बहुविधा मायाः प्राकुर्वन्नमितौजसः ॥०३-१६८-२६॥
pīḍyamānāsu māyāsu tāsu tāsvasureśvarāḥ। punarbahuvidhā māyāḥ prākurvannamitaujasaḥ॥03-168-26॥
[पीड्यमानासु (pīḍyamānāsu) - being afflicted; (in) the; मायासु (māyāsu) - illusions; (in); तासु (tāsu) - in those; तासु (tāsu) - in those; असुरेश्वराः (asureśvarāḥ) - lords of asuras; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; बहुविधाः (bahuvidhāḥ) - of many kinds; मायाः (māyāḥ) - illusions; प्राकुर्वन् (prākurvan) - created; अमितौजसः (amitaujasaḥ) - of immeasurable might;]
(Being afflicted by those illusions, in those, the lords of asuras, again created illusions of many kinds, of immeasurable might.)
While being afflicted by those illusions, the lords of the asuras, of immeasurable might, once again created many kinds of illusions. (03-168-26)
पुनः प्रकाशमभवत्तमसा ग्रस्यते पुनः। व्रजत्यदर्शनं लोकः पुनरप्सु निमज्जति ॥०३-१६८-२७॥
punaḥ prākāśam abhavat tamasā grasyate punaḥ। vrajati adarśanam lokaḥ punar apsu nimajjati॥03-168-27॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रकाशम् (prākāśam) - light; brightness; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; arose; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; ग्रस्यते (grasyate) - is swallowed; is devoured; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; व्रजति (vrajati) - goes; अदर्शनम् (adarśanam) - invisibility; disappearance; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; people; पुनः (punar) - again; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; निमज्जति (nimajjati) - sinks; plunges;]
(Again light arose; by darkness is swallowed again. Goes to invisibility the world; again in the waters sinks.)
Once again, light appears, but is again swallowed by darkness. The world vanishes from sight and once more sinks into the waters. (03-168-27)
सुसङ्गृहीतैर्हरिभिः प्रकाशे सति मातलिः। व्यचरत्स्यन्दनाग्र्येण सङ्ग्रामे लोमहर्षणे ॥०३-१६८-२८॥
susaṅgṛhītair haribhiḥ prakāśe sati mātaliḥ। vyacaratsyandanāgryeṇa saṅgrāme lomaharṣaṇe ॥03-168-28॥
[सुसङ्गृहीतैः (susaṅgṛhītaiḥ) - well-harnessed; (by) हरिभिः (haribhiḥ) - by horses; प्रकाशे (prakāśe) - in light; सति (sati) - while being; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - moved about; स्यन्दनाग्र्येण (syandanāgryeṇa) - by excellent chariot; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; लोमहर्षणे (lomaharṣaṇe) - hair-raising;]
(Mātali, with well-harnessed horses, in light being, moved about by an excellent chariot in the hair-raising battle.)
Mātali, with his chariot drawn by well-harnessed horses, moved about in the hair-raising battle when there was light. (03-168-28)
ततः पर्यपतन्नुग्रा निवातकवचा मयि। तानहं विवरं दृष्ट्वा प्राहिण्वं यमसादनम् ॥०३-१६८-२९॥
tataḥ paryapatannugrā nivātakavacā mayi। tānahaṃ vivaraṃ dṛṣṭvā prāhiṇvaṃ yamasādanam॥03-168-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पर्यपतन् (paryapatan) - fell all around; अनुग्राः (anugrāḥ) - the fierce (ones); निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavacas; मयि (mayi) - upon me; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; विवरम् (vivaram) - the opening; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्राहिण्वम् (prāhiṇvam) - I sent; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - to the abode of Yama (death);]
(Then the fierce Nivātakavacas fell all around upon me. Them, having seen the opening, I sent to the abode of Yama.)
Then the fierce Nivātakavacas converged all around me. Seeing an opening, I sent them to the abode of Yama (death). (03-168-29)
वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे निवातकवचान्तके। नापश्यं सहसा सर्वान्दानवान्माययावृतान् ॥०३-१६८-३०॥
vartamāne tathā yuddhe nivātakavacāntake। nāpaśyaṃ sahasā sarvān dānavān māyayāvṛtān ॥03-168-30॥
[वर्तमाने (vartamāne) - (while) present; while being; at hand; तथा (tathā) - likewise; so; in this way; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; निवातकवच-अन्तके (nivātakavaca-antake) - destroyer of Nivātakavaca demons; न (na) - not; अपश्यं (apaśyaṃ) - I saw; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दानवान् (dānavān) - demons; मायया-वृतान् (māyayā-vṛtān) - covered (concealed) by illusion;]
(While being present likewise in battle, O destroyer of Nivātakavaca, I did not see all the demons suddenly (because) they were covered by illusion.)
Though present there in the battle, O destroyer of the Nivātakavaca demons, I suddenly could not see any of the demons, as they were concealed by illusion. (03-168-30)
