अदृश्यमानास्ते दैत्या योधयन्ति स्म मायया। अदृश्यानस्त्रवीर्येण तानप्यहमयोधयम् ॥०३-१६९-१॥
adṛśyamānās te daityā yodhayanti sma māyayā। adṛśyān astra-vīryeṇa tān api aham ayodhayam ॥03-169-1॥
[अदृश्यमानाः (adṛśyamānāḥ) - being invisible; ते (te) - those; दैत्या (daityāḥ) - daityas (demons); योधयन्ति (yodhayanti) - fight; स्म (sma) - indeed; मायया (māyayā) - by illusion; अदृश्यान् (adṛśyān) - invisible ones; अस्त्रवीर्येण (astra-vīryeṇa) - by the power of weapons; तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I; अयोधयम् (ayodhayam) - fought;]
(Being invisible, those Daityas fought indeed by illusion. The invisible ones, by the power of weapons, them also I fought.)
Those Daityas, remaining invisible, fought by means of illusion. I, too, fought those invisible ones by the power of weapons. (03-169-1)
गाण्डीवमुक्ता विशिखाः सम्यगस्त्रप्रचोदिताः। अच्छिन्दन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि यत्र यत्र स्म तेऽभवन् ॥०३-१६९-२॥
gāṇḍīvamuktā viśikhāḥ samyag-astrapracoditāḥ। acchindannuttamāṅgāni yatra yatra sma te'bhavan ॥03-169-2॥

ततो निवातकवचा वध्यमाना मया युधि। संहृत्य मायां सहसा प्राविशन्पुरमात्मनः ॥०३-१६९-३॥
tato nivātakavacā vadhyamānā mayā yudhi। saṁhṛtya māyāṁ sahasā prāviśan puram ātmanaḥ॥03-169-3॥

(Then the Nivātakavacas, being slain by me in battle, suddenly withdrawing their illusion, entered the city of themselves.)

व्यपयातेषु दैत्येषु प्रादुर्भूते च दर्शने। अपश्यं दानवांस्तत्र हताञ्शतसहस्रशः ॥०३-१६९-४॥
vyapayāteṣu daityeṣu prādurbhūte ca darśane। apaśyaṃ dānavāṃs tatra hatāñ śata-sahasraśaḥ ॥03-169-4॥

(When the Daityas had fled and the manifestation appeared in sight, I saw the Dānavas there, slain by hundreds of thousands.)
When the Daityas had fled and the manifestation appeared, I saw countless Dānavas slain there by the hundred thousands. (03-169-4)
विनिष्पिष्टानि तत्रैषां शस्त्राण्याभरणानि च। कूटशः स्म प्रदृश्यन्ते गात्राणि कवचानि च ॥०३-१६९-५॥
viniṣpiṣṭāni tatraiṣāṃ śastrāṇy ābharaṇāni ca. kūṭaśaḥ sma pradṛśyante gātrāṇi kavacāni ca ॥03-169-5॥
[विनिष्पिष्टानि (viniṣpiṣṭāni) - utterly crushed; तत्र (tatra) - there; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - ornaments; च (ca) - and; कूटशः (kūṭaśaḥ) - in heaps; स्म (sma) - indeed; प्रदृश्यन्ते (pradṛśyante) - are seen; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; कवचानि (kavacāni) - armors; च (ca) - and;]
(Utterly crushed there of these weapons, ornaments and in heaps indeed are seen limbs, armors and.)
There, the crushed weapons and ornaments of these men, as well as heaps of their limbs and armor, are indeed seen. (03-169-5)
हयानां नान्तरं ह्यासीत्पदाद्विचलितुं पदम्। उत्पत्य सहसा तस्थुरन्तरिक्षगमास्ततः ॥०३-१६९-६॥
hayānāṁ nāntaraṁ hy āsīt padād vicalituṁ padam। utpatya sahasā tasthur antarikṣagamās tataḥ॥03-169-6॥
[हयानां (hayānāṁ) - of the horses; न (na) - not; अन्तरं (antaraṁ) - gap; हि (hi) - indeed; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; पदात् (padāt) - from the step; विचलितुं (vicalituṁ) - to deviate; पदम् (padam) - step; उत्पत्य (utpatya) - leaping up; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - stood; अन्तरिक्षगमाः (antarikṣagamāḥ) - those moving in the sky; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Of the horses not indeed gap there was from the step to deviate step. Leaping up suddenly stood those moving in the sky then (03-169-6))
There was indeed no gap in the steps of the horses; not even a single step deviated from position. Suddenly leaping up, those who moved in the sky then stood still. (03-169-6)
ततो निवातकवचा व्योम सञ्छाद्य केवलम्। अदृश्या ह्यभ्यवर्तन्त विसृजन्तः शिलोच्चयान् ॥०३-१६९-७॥
tato nivātakavacā vyoma sañchādya kevalam। adṛśyā hy abhyavartanta visṛjantaḥ śiloccayān ॥03-169-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavacas; व्योम (vyoma) - the sky; सञ्छाद्य (sañchādya) - having covered; केवलम् (kevalam) - entirely; अदृश्याः (adṛśyāḥ) - invisible; हि (hi) - indeed; अभ्यवर्तन्त (abhyavartanta) - attacked; विसृजन्तः (visṛjantaḥ) - hurling; शिल-उच्चयान् (śila-ucchayān) - massive rocks;]
(Then the Nivātakavacas, having entirely covered the sky, indeed invisible, attacked, hurling massive rocks.)
Then the Nivātakavacas, having thoroughly veiled the sky and remaining unseen, launched their attack, casting huge rocks. (03-169-7)
अन्तर्भूमिगताश्चान्ये हयानां चरणान्यथ। न्यगृह्णन्दानवा घोरा रथचक्रे च भारत ॥०३-१६९-८॥
antarbhūmigatāś cānye hayānāṃ caraṇāny atha। nyagṛhṇan dānavā ghorā rathacakre ca bhārata॥03-169-8॥
[अन्तर्भूमिगताः (antarbhūmigatāḥ) - gone within the earth; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - other; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of the horses; चरणान् (caraṇān) - feet; यथ (yatha) - as; न्यगृह्णन् (nyagṛhṇan) - they seized; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; घोराः (ghorāḥ) - terrible; रथचक्रे (rathacakre) - in (the) chariot-wheel; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Other feet of the horses, as entered within the earth, the terrible Dānavas seized in the chariot-wheels and, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the terrible Dānavas also seized the feet of other horses as they entered into the earth, and in the chariot-wheels. (03-169-8)
विनिगृह्य हरीनश्वान्रथं च मम युध्यतः। सर्वतो मामचिन्वन्त सरथं धरणीधरैः ॥०३-१६९-९॥
vinigṛhya harīnaśvān rathaṃ ca mama yudhyataḥ। sarvato mām acinvanta sarathaṃ dharaṇīdharaḥ ॥03-169-9॥
[विनिगृह्य (vinigṛhya) - having restrained; हरीनश्वान् (harīnaśvān) - with tawny-horsed; रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; युध्यतः (yudhyataḥ) - fighting; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; माम् (mām) - me; अचिन्वन्त (acinvanta) - sought; सरथं (sarathaṃ) - with (my) chariot; धरणीधरैः (dharaṇīdharaḥ) - by kings (lit. 'upholders of the earth');]
(Having restrained the chariot with tawny horses and myself fighting, from all sides the kings sought me with (my) chariot.)
Having held back my chariot drawn by tawny horses while I was fighting, the kings from all sides pursued me together with my chariot. (03-169-9)
पर्वतैरुपचीयद्भिः पतमानैस्तथापरैः। स देशो यत्र वर्ताम गुहेव समपद्यत ॥०३-१६९-१०॥
parvatair upacīyadbhih patamānais tathā aparaiḥ। sa deśo yatra vartāma guheva samapadyata ॥03-169-10॥
[पर्वतैः (parvataiḥ) - by mountains; उपचीयद्भिः (upacīyadbhih) - increasing; पतमानैः (patamānais) - falling; तथा (tathā) - thus; in such manner; अपरैः (aparaiḥ) - by others; (i.e. other mountains); स (sa) - that; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; यत्र (yatra) - where; वर्ताम (vartāma) - we were staying; गुहा (guhā) - cave; इव (iva) - like; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; appeared;]
(By mountains increasing, by falling (and) thus by others, that region where we were staying became like a cave.)
The region where we were staying, surrounded by mountains piling up and other mountains collapsing, began to resemble a cave. (03-169-10)
पर्वतैश्छाद्यमानोऽहं निगृहीतैश्च वाजिभिः। अगच्छं परमामार्तिं मातलिस्तदलक्षयत् ॥०३-१६९-११॥
parvataiś chādyamāno'ham nigṛhītaiś ca vājibhiḥ। agacchaṁ paramām ārtiṁ mātalis tad alakṣayat॥03-169-11॥
[पर्वतैः (parvataiḥ) - by mountains; छाद्यमानः (chādyamānaḥ) - being covered; अहम् (aham) - I; निगृहीतैः (nigṛhītaiḥ) - by restrained; च (ca) - and; वाजिभिः (vājibhiḥ) - by horses; अगच्छम् (agaccham) - I went; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; आर्तिम् (ārtim) - distress; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; तत् (tad) - that; अलक्षयत् (alakṣayat) - noticed;]
(Being covered by mountains, and with the horses restrained, I went into the supreme distress; Mātali noticed that.)
Covered by mountains and with the horses being restrained, I was plunged into great distress; Mātali noticed it. (03-169-11)
लक्षयित्वा तु मां भीतमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। अर्जुनार्जुन मा भैस्त्वं वज्रमस्त्रमुदीरय ॥०३-१६९-१२॥
lakṣayitvā tu māṁ bhītam idaṁ vacanam abravīt. arjuna arjuna mā bhaiḥ tvaṁ vajram astram udīraya ॥03-169-12॥

(But, having observed me frightened, this speech he spoke: "O Arjuna, O Arjuna, do not fear, you utter the thunderbolt weapon." (03-169-12))
But, seeing that I was frightened, he said this: "Arjuna, Arjuna, do not fear, you must invoke the thunderbolt weapon." (03-169-12)
ततोऽहं तस्य तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा वज्रमुदीरयम्। देवराजस्य दयितं वज्रमस्त्रं नराधिप ॥०३-१६९-१३॥
tato'haṃ tasya tadvākyaṃ śrutvā vajramudīrayam। devarājasya dayitaṃ vajramastraṃ narādhipa ॥03-169-13॥

(Then I, having heard his that speech, uttered the vajra. O king, the dear vajra weapon of the king of gods.)
Then, having heard those words of his, I uttered the vajra, the favorite vajra weapon of the king of the gods, O king. (03-169-13)
अचलं स्थानमासाद्य गाण्डीवमनुमन्त्र्य च। अमुञ्चं वज्रसंस्पर्शानायसान्निशिताञ्शरान् ॥०३-१६९-१४॥
acalaṃ sthānam āsādya gāṇḍīvam anumantrya ca। amuñcaṃ vajrasaṃsparśān āyasān niśitāñ śarān ॥03-169-14॥
[अचलं (acalam) - unmoving; motionless; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; position; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva (name of Arjuna's bow); अनुमन्त्र्य (anumantrya) - having saluted; having paid respects (or having invoked by mantra); च (ca) - and; अमुञ्चम् (amuñcam) - I released; वज्रसंस्पर्शान् (vajrasaṃsparśān) - having the touch of thunderbolt; आयसान् (āyasān) - made of iron; निशितान् (niśitān) - sharp; शरान् (śarān) - arrows;]
(Having reached an unmoving place, and having invoked Gāṇḍīva, I released sharp arrows made of iron, possessing the touch of thunderbolt.)
Having reached a firm position and reverently invoking Gāṇḍīva, I released sharp iron arrows that had the touch of a thunderbolt. (03-169-14)
ततो मायाश्च ताः सर्वा निवातकवचांश्च तान्। ते वज्रचोदिता बाणा वज्रभूताः समाविशन् ॥०३-१६९-१५॥
tato māyāś ca tāḥ sarvā nivātakavacāṁś ca tān। te vajracoditā bāṇā vajrabhūtāḥ samāviśan ॥03-169-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; then; thereafter; मायाः (māyāḥ) - illusions; magical powers; च (ca) - and; ताः (tāḥ) - those; they (feminine plural); सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; निवातकवचान् (nivātakavacān) - Nivātakavacas (name of a class of asuras); च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them (masculine accusative plural); ते (te) - those; they (masculine plural); वज्रचोदिताः (vajracoditāḥ) - impelled by thunderbolt; set in motion by Indra’s thunderbolt; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; वज्रभूताः (vajrabhūtāḥ) - having become like thunderbolts; made thunderbolt-like; समाविशन् (samāviśan) - entered; penetrated;]
(Then all those magical powers and the Nivātakavacas, those arrows impelled by thunderbolt, having become like thunderbolts, entered (them).)
Then all those illusions and the Nivātakavacas—those arrows, driven by the thunderbolt, having become like thunderbolts—entered them. (03-169-15)
ते वज्रवेगाभिहता दानवाः पर्वतोपमाः। इतरेतरमाश्लिष्य न्यपतन्पृथिवीतले ॥०३-१६९-१६॥
te vajravegābhihatā dānavāḥ parvatopamāḥ। itaretaram āśliṣya nyapatan pṛthivī-tale ॥03-169-16॥
[ते (te) - they; वज्रवेगाभिहता (vajravegābhihatāḥ) - struck by the force of the thunderbolt; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; पर्वतोपमाः (parvatopamāḥ) - mountain-like; इतरेतरम् (itaretaram) - one another; आश्लिष्य (āśliṣya) - embracing; न्यपतन् (nyapatan) - fell down; पृथिवीतले (pṛthivī-tale) - on the surface of the earth;]
(They, struck by the force of the thunderbolt, the Dānavas (who were) mountain-like, embracing one another, fell down on the surface of the earth.)
The Dānavas, mountain-like in form, struck by the force of the thunderbolt, fell to the earth's surface, embracing each other. (03-169-16)
अन्तर्भूमौ तु येऽगृह्णन्दानवा रथवाजिनः। अनुप्रविश्य तान्बाणाः प्राहिण्वन्यमसादनम् ॥०३-१६९-१७॥
antarbhūmau tu ye'gṛhṇandānavā rathavājinaḥ। anupraviśya tānbāṇāḥ prāhiṇvanyamasādanam ॥03-169-17॥
[अन्तर्भूमौ (antarbhūmau) - within the earth; तु (tu) - but; ये (ye) - who; अगृह्णन् (agṛhṇan) - had taken refuge; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; रथवाजिनः (rathavājinaḥ) - chariot-warriors and horsemen; अनुप्रविश्य (anupraviśya) - having entered into; तान् (tān) - them; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; प्राहिण्वन् (prāhinvan) - sent forth; अ्यमसादनम् (ayamasādanam) - without fail;]
(But within the earth, the Dānavas who had taken refuge—chariot-warriors and horsemen—having entered them, arrows sent forth without fail.)
But the arrows entered even those Dānavas—chariot-warriors and horsemen—who had taken refuge within the earth, striking them without fail. (03-169-17)
हतैर्निवातकवचैर्निरस्तैः पर्वतोपमैः। समाच्छाद्यत देशः स विकीर्णैरिव पर्वतैः ॥०३-१६९-१८॥
hatair nivātakavacaiḥ nirstaiḥ parvatopamaiḥ। samācchādyata deśaḥ sa vikīrṇair iva parvataiḥ॥03-169-18॥
[हतैः (hataiḥ) - by those slain; by the killed; by the dead; निवातकवचैः (nivātakavacaiḥ) - by the Nivātakavacas; निरस्तैः (nirstaiḥ) - by those driven away; by those removed; पर्वतोपमैः (parvatopamaiḥ) - mountain-like; resembling mountains; समाच्छाद्यत (samācchādyata) - was covered; was enveloped; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; place; area; सः (sa) - that (he/it); विकीर्णैः (vikīrṇaiḥ) - scattered; dispersed; इव (iva) - as if; like; as though; पर्वतैः (parvataiḥ) - by mountains; with mountains;]
(By those slain Nivātakavacas, by those driven away, mountain-like, the region that was covered, as if by scattered mountains.)
That region was covered by the dead and dispersed Nivātakavacas, who resembled mountains, appearing as if the land was strewn with scattered mountains. (03-169-18)
न हयानां क्षतिः काचिन्न रथस्य न मातलेः। मम चादृश्यत तदा तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०३-१६९-१९॥
na hayānāṃ kṣatiḥ kācin na rathasya na mātaleḥ। mama caādṛśyata tadā tadadbhutamivābhavat ॥03-169-19॥
[न (na) - not; हयानां (hayānāṃ) - of the horses; क्षतिः (kṣatiḥ) - injury; काचित् (kācit) - any; न (na) - not; रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; न (na) - not; मातलेः (mātaleḥ) - of Mātali; मम (mama) - to me; च (ca) - also; आदृश्यत (ādṛśyata) - was seen; तदा (tadā) - then; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Not of the horses any injury, not of the chariot, not of Mātali, to me also was seen then; that as if wonderful became.)
There was no injury to the horses, nor to the chariot, nor to Mātali, nor was any seen with me at that time; it seemed as if that was a wonder. (03-169-19)
ततो मां प्रहसन्राजन्मातलिः प्रत्यभाषत। नैतदर्जुन देवेषु त्वयि वीर्यं यदीक्ष्यते ॥०३-१६९-२०॥
tato māṃ prahasan rājann ātaliḥ pratyabhāṣata। naitad arjuna deveṣu tvayi vīryaṃ yad īkṣyate॥03-169-20॥

(Then, me, smiling, O king, Ātali addressed. Not this, Arjuna, among the gods, in you, energy which is seen.)
Then, smiling at me, O king, Ātali addressed (me): 'The energy which is seen in you, Arjuna, is not (even) among the gods.' (03-169-20)
हतेष्वसुरसङ्घेषु दारास्तेषां तु सर्वशः। प्राक्रोशन्नगरे तस्मिन्यथा शरदि लक्ष्मणाः ॥०३-१६९-२१॥
hateṣv-asura-saṅgheṣu dārās-teṣāṃ tu sarvaśaḥ। prākrośan-nagare tasmin yathā śaradi lakṣmaṇāḥ॥03-169-21॥
[हतेषु (hateṣu) - when slain; in those killed; असुरसङ्घेषु (asura-saṅgheṣu) - among the groups of asuras; दाराः (dārāḥ) - wives; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तु (tu) - but; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - all; together; प्राक्रोशन् (prākrośan) - cried out aloud; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; यथा (yathā) - as; like; शरदि (śaradi) - in autumn; लक्ष्मणाः (lakṣmaṇāḥ) - Lakṣmaṇas (epithet for cranes);]
(When the groups of asuras were slain, their wives all cried out aloud in that city, just as Lakṣmaṇas (cranes) in autumn.)
When the groups of asuras were slain, their wives all together screamed in the city, just like flocks of cranes in autumn. (03-169-21)
ततो मातलिना सार्धमहं तत्पुरमभ्ययाम्। त्रासयन्रथघोषेण निवातकवचस्त्रियः ॥०३-१६९-२२॥

(Them having seen, ten thousand like peacocks horses, the chariot and sun-like, ran away in groups women.)

ताभिराभरणैः शब्दस्त्रासिताभिः समीरितः। शिलानामिव शैलेषु पतन्तीनामभूत्तदा ॥०३-१६९-२४॥
tābhir ābharaṇaiḥ śabda-strāsitābhiḥ samīritaḥ। śilānām iva śaileṣu patantīnām abhūt tadā॥03-169-24॥

(By those ornaments, by the ones frightened by sound, stirred; of stones, like, among mountains, falling, became then.)
Then, the sound stirred by those ornaments frightened them, just like the noise of falling stones among mountains. (03-169-24)
वित्रस्ता दैत्यनार्यस्ताः स्वानि वेश्मान्यथाविशन्। बहुरत्नविचित्राणि शातकुम्भमयानि च ॥०३-१६९-२५॥
vitrāstā daityanāryastāḥ svāni veśmānyathāviśan। bahuratnavicitrāṇi śātakumbhamayāni ca ॥03-169-25॥

(Affrighted, those Daitya women their own mansions then entered, abounding in various gems and made of refined gold.)

तदद्भुताकारमहं दृष्ट्वा नगरमुत्तमम्। विशिष्टं देवनगरादपृच्छं मातलिं ततः ॥०३-१६९-२६॥
tad adbhutākāram ahaṃ dṛṣṭvā nagaram uttamam। viśiṣṭaṃ deva-nagarāt apṛccham mātalim tataḥ॥03-169-26॥

(That wonderful form I having seen, the excellent city, distinguished from the city of the gods, I asked Mātali then.)
Having seen that wondrous form and the excellent city, distinguished from the city of the gods, I then questioned Mātali. (03-169-26)
इदमेवंविधं कस्माद्देवता नाविशन्त्युत। पुरंदरपुराद्धीदं विशिष्टमिति लक्षये ॥०३-१६९-२७॥
idam evaṃvidhaṃ kasmād devatā na aviśanti uta. puraṃdara-purāt hi idam viśiṣṭam iti lakṣaye ॥03-169-27॥

(This such kind why deities not enter indeed? From Purandara's city indeed this (is) distinguished thus I observe.)
Why do the deities not enter such a place? I observe that this is indeed more distinguished than the city of Purandara (Indra). (03-169-27)

āsīd idaṃ purā pārtha devarājasya naḥ puram। tato nivātakavacair itaḥ pracyāvitāḥ surāḥ॥03-169-28॥
[आसीत् (āsīt) - was; इदं (idaṃ) - this; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of gods; नः (naḥ) - our; पुरम् (puram) - city; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; निवातकवचैः (nivātakavacaiḥ) - by the Nivātakavacas; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; प्रच्याविताः (pracyāvitāḥ) - driven out; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods;]
(This was formerly, O Pārtha, the city of our king of gods; from here the gods were driven out by the Nivātakavacas.)

तपस्तप्त्वा महत्तीव्रं प्रसाद्य च पितामहम्। इदं वृतं निवासाय देवेभ्यश्चाभयं युधि ॥०३-१६९-२९॥
tapastaptvā mahat-tīvraṃ prasādya ca pitāmaham। idaṃ vṛtaṃ nivāsāya devebhyaś ca abhayam yudhi ॥03-169-29॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed; महत् (mahat) - great; तीव्रं (tīvram) - intense; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; च (ca) - and; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the Grandfather (Brahmā); इदं (idaṃ) - this; वृतं (vṛtam) - boon; निवासाय (nivāsāya) - for dwelling; देवेभ्यः (devebhyaḥ) - to the gods; च (ca) - and; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Having performed great intense austerity and having propitiated the Grandfather (Brahmā), this boon (was obtained) for dwelling, and to the gods, fearlessness in battle.)
After performing great and intense austerities and propitiating the Grandfather (Brahmā), this boon was obtained for residence, and also fearlessness in battle for the gods. (03-169-29)
ततः शक्रेण भगवान्स्वयम्भूरभिचोदितः। विधत्तां भगवानत्रेत्यात्मनो हितकाम्यया ॥०३-१६९-३०॥
tataḥ śakreṇa bhagavān svayambhūr abhicoditaḥ। vidhattāṁ bhagavān atr ety ātmano hita-kāmyayā॥03-169-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; स्वयम्भूः (svayambhūḥ) - the self-born (Brahmā); अभिचोदितः (abhicoditaḥ) - urged; विधत्तां (vidhattām) - may he perform; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; अत्र (atra) - here; इति (iti) - thus; आत्मनः (ātmano) - of himself; हितकाम्यया (hita-kāmyayā) - with desire for welfare;]
(Then by Śakra, the revered one, Self-born (Brahmā) being urged, "May the revered one do (this) here thus, with desire for his own welfare.")
Then, when urged by Śakra, the revered Self-born one (Brahmā), desiring his own welfare, performed (the act) here. (03-169-30)
तत उक्तो भगवता दिष्टमत्रेति वासवः। भवितान्तस्त्वमेवैषां देहेनान्येन वृत्रहन् ॥०३-१६९-३१॥
tat ukto bhagavatā diṣṭamatreti vāsavaḥ। bhavitāntastvamevaiṣāṃ dehenānyena vṛtrahan॥03-169-31॥
[तत् (tat) - that; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the revered one; दिष्टमत्र (diṣṭam atra) - by fate here; इति (iti) - thus; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra); भविता (bhavitā) - will be; अन्तः (antaḥ) - the end; त्वमेव (tvam eva) - you indeed; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; देहेन (dehena) - with a body; अन्येन (anyena) - other; वृत्रहन् (vṛtrahan) - O Slayer of Vṛtra;]
(That spoken by the revered one, 'It is fate here'—thus Vāsava (Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra) (says): The end will be for these by you indeed, with another body, O Slayer of Vṛtra.)
Vāsava (Indra) said, 'That which was spoken by the revered one—“It is fate here”—(will come to pass): only you, O Slayer of Vṛtra, will be the end for these (enemies), but with another body.' (03-169-31)
तत एषां वधार्थाय शक्रोऽस्त्राणि ददौ तव। न हि शक्याः सुरैर्हन्तुं य एते निहतास्त्वया ॥०३-१६९-३२॥
tat eṣāṃ vadhārthāya śakro'strāṇi dadau tava। na hi śakyāḥ surair hantuṃ ya ete nihatās tvayā॥03-169-32॥
[तत (tat) - therefore; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; वधार्थाय (vadhārthāya) - for the purpose of destruction; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; ददौ (dadau) - gave; तव (tava) - to you; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - can (be); सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; हन्तुम् (hantuṃ) - to be slain; य (ya) - who; एते (ete) - these; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Therefore, for the destruction of these, Indra gave weapons to you. Indeed, not by the gods can those who are slain by you be killed.)
Therefore, for the destruction of these, Indra gave you weapons, for those whom you have slain cannot be killed by the gods. (03-169-32)
कालस्य परिणामेन ततस्त्वमिह भारत। एषामन्तकरः प्राप्तस्तत्त्वया च कृतं तथा ॥०३-१६९-३३॥
kālasya pariṇāmena tatastvam iha bhārata। eṣām antakaraḥ prāptas tat tvayā ca kṛtaṃ tathā ॥03-169-33॥
[कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; परिणामेन (pariṇāmena) - by transformation; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अन्तकरः (antakaraḥ) - destroyer; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; तत् (tat) - that; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Of time by transformation therefore you here O Bhārata, of these destroyer arrived; that by you and done thus.)
O Bhārata, by the transformation of time, therefore you have come here; you have become the destroyer of these, and so it has been done by you. (03-169-33)
दानवानां विनाशार्थं महास्त्राणां महद्बलम्। ग्राहितस्त्वं महेन्द्रेण पुरुषेन्द्र तदुत्तमम् ॥०३-१६९-३४॥
dānavānāṃ vināśārthaṃ mahāstrāṇāṃ mahadbalam। grāhitastvaṃ mahendreṇa puruṣendra taduttamam ॥03-169-34॥
[दानवानां (dānavānāṃ) - of the dānavas; विनाशार्थं (vināśārtham) - for the purpose of destruction; महास्त्राणां (mahāstrāṇām) - of great weapons; महत्-बलम् (mahat-balam) - great power; ग्राहितः (grāhitaḥ) - obtained; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; महेन्द्रेण (mahendreṇa) - by Mahendra (Indra); पुरुषेन्द्र (puruṣendra) - O best of men; तत्-उत्तमम् (tat-uttamam) - that excellent one;]
(Of the dānavas for the purpose of destruction of great weapons great power obtained you by Mahendra O best of men that excellent one.)
O best of men, you obtained that excellent power of the great weapons from Mahendra for the destruction of the dānavas. (03-169-34)

ततः प्रविश्य नगरं दानवांश्च निहत्य तान्। पुनर्मातलिना सार्धमगच्छं देवसद्म तत् ॥०३-१६९-३५॥
tataḥ praviśya nagaraṃ dānavāṃś ca nihatya tān। punar mātalinā sārdham agacchaṃ deva-sadma tat॥03-169-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; दानवान् (dānavān) - the demons; च (ca) - and; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; तान् (tān) - them; पुनः (punar) - again; मातलिना (mātalinā) - with Mātali; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; अगच्छम् (agaccham) - I went; देवसद्म (deva-sadma) - divine abode; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Then, having entered the city and having slain those demons, again with Mātali together, I went to that divine abode.)
Then, after entering the city and killing those demons, I went again with Mātali to the divine abode. (03-169-35)
