As I was returning, I saw a great (wonder); then (there was) another city, moving as one wishes, divine, and as radiant as fire and the sun. (03-170-1)
द्रुमै रत्नमयैश्चैत्रैर्भास्वरैश्च पतत्रिभिः। पौलोमैः कालकेयैश्च नित्यहृष्टैरधिष्ठितम् ॥०३-१७०-२॥

पुलोमा नाम दैतेयी कालका च महासुरी। दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं ते चेरतुः परमं तपः ॥ तपसोऽन्ते ततस्ताभ्यां स्वयम्भूरददाद्वरम् ॥०३-१७०-६॥
pulomā nāma daiteyī kālakā ca mahāsurī। divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ te ceratuḥ paramaṃ tapaḥ ॥ tapaso'nte tatastābhyāṃ svayambhūr-adadād-varam ॥03-170-6॥

(Pulomā named daughter of Diti, Kālakā and great demoness, a thousand divine years they practiced supreme austerity. At the end of the penance then to them the self-born gave a boon.)

अगृह्णीतां वरं ते तु सुतानामल्पदुःखताम्। अवध्यतां च राजेन्द्र सुरराक्षसपन्नगैः ॥०३-१७०-७॥

सयक्षगन्धर्वगणैः पन्नगासुरराक्षसैः ॥०३-१७०-८॥

(That this moving in the sky divine moves devoid of immortals; inhabited by the Paulomas, O hero, by the Kālakaeyas and by the Dānavas.)

हिरण्यपुरमित्येतत्ख्यायते नगरं महत्। रक्षितं कालकेयैश्च पौलोमैश्च महासुरैः ॥०३-१७०-११॥
hiraṇyapuram ity etat khyāyate nagaraṁ mahat। rakṣitaṁ kālakeyaiś ca paulomaiś ca mahāsuraiḥ ॥03-170-11॥
[हिरण्यपुरम् (hiraṇyapuram) - Hiraṇyapura; (the city of gold); इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; ख्यायते (khyāyate) - is called; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; town; महत् (mahat) - great; large; रक्षितम् (rakṣitam) - protected; guarded; कालकेयैः (kālakeyaiḥ) - by Kālakeyas; (demons descended from Kālakeya); च (ca) - and; पौलोमैः (paulomaiḥ) - by Paulomas; (descendants of Puloma); च (ca) - and; महासुरैः (mahāsuraiḥ) - by great asuras (demons);]
(Hiraṇyapura thus this is called city great. Protected by Kālakeyas and by Paulomas and by great asuras.)

त एते मुदिता नित्यमवध्याः सर्वदैवतैः। निवसन्त्यत्र राजेन्द्र गतोद्वेगा निरुत्सुकाः ॥ मानुषो मृत्युरेतेषां निर्दिष्टो ब्रह्मणा पुरा ॥०३-१७०-१२॥
ta ete muditā nityam avadhyāḥ sarvadaivataiḥ। nivasanty atra rājendra gatodvegā nirutsukāḥ॥ mānuṣo mṛtyur eteṣāṃ nirdiṣṭo brahmaṇā purā॥03-170-12॥

(They these joyful always not to be slain by all the gods dwell here O king of kings, freed from agitation, without anxiety. Human death for these appointed by Brahmā formerly. (03-170-12))

surāsurair avadhyāṁs tān ahaṁ jñātvā tataḥ prabho। abruvaṁ mātaliṁ hṛṣṭo yāhy etat puram añjasā ॥03-170-13॥

त्रिदशेशद्विषो यावत्क्षयमस्त्रैर्नयाम्यहम्। न कथञ्चिद्धि मे पापा न वध्या ये सुरद्विषः ॥०३-१७०-१४॥
tridaśeśadviṣo yāvat-kṣayam astraiḥ nayāmy-aham। na kathaṁcid dhi me pāpā na vadhyā ye suradviṣaḥ ॥03-170-14॥
[त्रिदशेशद्विषः (tridaśeśadviṣaḥ) - enemies of the lord of the thirty (gods); यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with weapons; नयामि (nayāmi) - I lead; अहम् (aham) - I; myself; न (na) - not; कथञ्चित् (kathaṁcit) - in any way; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - by me; पापाः (pāpāḥ) - the wicked ones; न (na) - not; वध्याः (vadhyāḥ) - to be slain; ये (ye) - who; सुरद्विषः (suradviṣaḥ) - enemies of the gods;]
(The enemies of the lord of the thirty (gods), as long as (until) destruction, with weapons, I lead; I, not in any way indeed by me are the wicked ones not to be slain who are enemies of the gods.)
As long as I have not destroyed the enemies of the lord of the thirty gods with weapons, by no means should these wicked ones, who are enemies of the gods, be spared by me. (03-170-14)
उवाह मां ततः शीघ्रं हिरण्यपुरमन्तिकात्। रथेन तेन दिव्येन हरियुक्तेन मातलिः ॥०३-१७०-१५॥

ते मामालक्ष्य दैतेया विचित्राभरणाम्बराः। समुत्पेतुर्महावेगा रथानास्थाय दंशिताः ॥०३-१७०-१६॥
te mām ālakṣya daiteyā vicitrābharaṇāmbaraḥ। samutpetur mahāvegā rathān āsthāya daṃśitāḥ ॥03-170-16॥

(They, having seen me, the daityas adorned with various ornaments and garments, of great speed, sprang up, having mounted chariots, armed.)

tato nālīka-nārācair bhalla-śakti-ṛṣṭi-tomaraiḥ। abhyaghnan dānava-indrā māṃ kruddhāḥ tīvra-parākramāḥ ॥03-170-17॥

(Then, with reed-arrows and iron-arrows, with broad-headed arrows, spears, lances, and tomaras, the lords of the Dānavas, enraged and of fierce valor, struck me repeatedly.)

(That I, and by a great shower of missiles, I counteracted the great shower of weapons, O king, relying upon the power of knowledge.)
O king, I counteracted that great shower of weapons with a great shower of missiles, relying on the power of knowledge. (03-170-18)
व्यामोहयं च तान्सर्वान्रथमार्गैश्चरन्रणे। तेऽन्योन्यमभिसंमूढाः पातयन्ति स्म दानवाः ॥०३-१७०-१९॥
vyāmohayaṃ ca tān sarvān ratha-mārgaiḥ caran raṇe। te'nyonyam abhi-saṃmūḍhāḥ pātayanti sma dānavāḥ॥03-170-19॥

(And bewildering all of them, moving about in battle along the chariot paths, they, thoroughly confused with one another, the Dānavas indeed caused one another to fall.)
The Dānavas bewildered all of them, and as they moved along the chariot roads in battle, in their utter confusion, they caused each other to fall. (03-170-19)
तेषामहं विमूढानामन्योन्यमभिधावताम्। शिरांसि विशिखैर्दीप्तैर्व्यहरं शतसङ्घशः ॥०३-१७०-२०॥
teṣām ahaṃ vimūḍhānām anyonyam abhidhāvatām। śirāṃsi viśikhair dīptair vyaharaṃ śatasaṅghaśaḥ ॥03-170-20॥

(Of those deluded ones running towards each other, I cut off heads with fiery arrows in hundreds of groups.)

ते वध्यमाना दैतेयाः पुरमास्थाय तत्पुनः। खमुत्पेतुः सनगरा मायामास्थाय दानवीम् ॥०३-१७०-२१॥
te vadhyamānā daiteyāḥ puram āsthāya tat punaḥ। kham utpetuḥ sanagarā māyām āsthāya dānavīm॥03-170-21॥

(They being slain, the Daityas, having taken refuge in that city again, flew up to the sky with their city, having resorted to demonic illusion.)
As they were being slain, the Daityas once more took refuge in their city, and, relying on demonic illusion, they rose up into the sky together with their city. (03-170-21)
ततोऽहं शरवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम्। मार्गमावृत्य दैत्यानां गतिं चैषामवारयम् ॥०३-१७०-२२॥
tato'ham śaravarṣeṇa mahatā pratyavārayam। mārgam āvṛtya daityānām gatiṃ ca eṣām avārayam ॥03-170-22॥

tat-puraṃ khacaraṃ divyaṃ kāmagaṃ divya-varcasam। daiteyaiḥ vara-dānena dhāryate sma yathā-sukham ॥03-170-23॥
[तत् (tat) - that; पुरम् (puram) - city; खचरम् (khacaram) - moving in the sky; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; कामगम् (kāmagam) - going as one wishes; दिव्यवर्चसम् (divya-varcasam) - having divine splendor; दैते्यैः (daiteyaiḥ) - by the Daityas; वरदानेन (vara-dānena) - by the boon; धार्यते (dhāryate) - is maintained; स्म (sma) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; सुखम् (sukham) - comfort;]
(That city, moving in the sky, divine, going as one wishes, of divine splendor, by the Daityas, by the boon, is maintained indeed, as (they) please, in comfort.)
That divine city, moving through the sky, able to go wherever desired, resplendent with divine radiance, was being easily maintained by the Daityas by the boon, as they pleased. (03-170-23)
अन्तर्भूमौ निपतितं पुनरूर्ध्वं प्रतिष्ठते। पुनस्तिर्यक्प्रयात्याशु पुनरप्सु निमज्जति ॥०३-१७०-२४॥
antarbhūmau nipatitaṃ punarūrdhvaṃ pratiṣṭhate. punastiryakprayātyāśu punarapsu nimajjati ॥03-170-24॥
[अन्तर्भूमौ (antarbhūmau) - within earth; in the earth; निपतितं (nipatitaṃ) - fallen; having fallen; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṃ) - upward; upwards; प्रतिष्ठते (pratiṣṭhate) - rises; stands; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तिर्यक् (tiryak) - sideways; प्रयाति (prayāti) - goes; moves; आशु (āśu) - quickly; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अप्सु (apsu) - in waters; निमज्जति (nimajjati) - sinks; immerses;]
(Within earth fallen, again upwards rises. Again sideways moves quickly, again in waters sinks.)
Having fallen into the earth, it again rises upwards; again, it quickly moves sideways and again sinks into the waters. (03-170-24)
अमरावतिसङ्काशं पुरं कामगमं तु तत्। अहमस्त्रैर्बहुविधैः प्रत्यगृह्णं नराधिप ॥०३-१७०-२५॥
amarāvatisaṅkāśaṃ puraṃ kāmagamaṃ tu tat। ahamastrairbhahuvidhaiḥ pratyagṛhṇaṃ narādhipa ॥03-170-25॥
[अमरावतिसङ्काशम् (amarāvatisaṅkāśam) - resembling Amaravati; पुरम् (puram) - city; कामगमम् (kāmagamam) - going according to desire; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - with missiles; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; प्रत्यगृह्णम् (pratyagṛhṇam) - seized; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(The city resembling Amaravati, going according to desire, but that I with missiles of many kinds seized, O king.)
O king, I seized that city, which resembled Amaravati and could go at will, with many kinds of missiles. (03-170-25)
ततोऽहं शरजालेन दिव्यास्त्रमुदितेन च। न्यगृह्णं सह दैतेयैस्तत्पुरं भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१७०-२६॥
tato'haṃ śarajālena divyāstramuditena ca। nyagṛhṇaṃ saha daiteyais tatpuraṃ bharatarṣabha॥03-170-26॥

(Then I, with a shower of arrows and manifest with a divine weapon, subdued that city along with the Daityas, O best of Bharatas.)
Then, O best of Bharatas, I subdued that city together with the Daityas by means of a shower of arrows and a divine weapon. (03-170-26)
विक्षतं चायसैर्बाणैर्मत्प्रयुक्तैरजिह्मगैः। महीमभ्यपतद्राजन्प्रभग्नं पुरमासुरम् ॥०३-१७०-२७॥
vikṣataṁ cāyasairbāṇairmatprayuktairajihmagaiḥ। mahīmabhyapatadrājanprabhagnaṁ puramāsuram॥03-170-27॥

(Wounded and with iron arrows, with arrows sent forth by me, not deviating, to the earth fell, O King, the city broken, of the Asuras.)
O King, the city of the Asuras, wounded and broken by the iron arrows—arrows sent forth by me, that did not swerve—fell to the earth. (03-170-27)
ते वध्यमाना मद्बाणैर्वज्रवेगैरयस्मयैः। पर्यभ्रमन्त वै राजन्नसुराः कालचोदिताः ॥०३-१७०-२८॥
te vadhyamānā mad-bāṇair vajra-vegair ayasmayaiḥ। paryabhramanta vai rājann asurāḥ kāla-coditāḥ॥03-170-28॥

(They, being slain by my iron arrows with thunderbolt-like speed, wandered about, indeed, O king, the Asuras, impelled by Time.)
O king, as the Asuras were being slain by my iron arrows shot with thunderbolt-like speed, they wandered about, driven by Time. (03-170-28)
ततो मातलिरप्याशु पुरस्तान्निपतन्निव। महीमवातरत्क्षिप्रं रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ॥०३-१७०-२९॥
tato mātalir apy āśu purastān nipatan niva। mahīm avatara t kṣipraṃ rathen ādityavarcasā ॥03-170-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; अपि (api) - also; आशु (āśu) - quickly; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in front; निपतन् (nipatan) - falling; इव (iva) - as if; महीम् (mahīm) - to the earth; अवातर t (avatara t) - descended; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; रथेन (rathena) - with the chariot; आदित्यवर्चसा (ādityavarcasā) - with solar splendor;]
(Then Mātali also, quickly, in front, as if falling, descended to the earth quickly with the chariot possessing solar splendor.)
Then Mātali too, quickly, as if falling forward, descended to the earth with the swift chariot shining with the radiance of the sun. (03-170-29)
ततो रथसहस्राणि षष्टिस्तेषाममर्षिणाम्। युयुत्सूनां मया सार्धं पर्यवर्तन्त भारत ॥०३-१७०-३०॥
tato rathasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭi teṣām amarṣiṇām। yuyutsūnāṃ mayā sārdhaṃ paryavartanta bhārata॥03-170-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रथसहस्राणि (rathasahasrāṇi) - chariots-thousands; षष्टि (ṣaṣṭi) - sixty; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अमर्षिणाम् (amarṣiṇām) - of the impatient; युयुत्सूनाम् (yuyutsūnām) - of those desiring to fight; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; पर्यवर्तन्त (paryavartanta) - turned back; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then sixty thousand chariots of those impatient ones, of those desiring to fight, together with me, turned back, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, sixty thousand chariots belonging to those impatient warriors desiring to fight turned back together with me. (03-170-30)
तानहं निशितैर्बाणैर्व्यधमं गार्ध्रवाजितैः। ते युद्धे संन्यवर्तन्त समुद्रस्य यथोर्मयः ॥०३-१७०-३१॥
tān ahaṁ niśitair bāṇair vyadhamam gārdhravājitaiḥ। te yuddhe saṁnyavartanta samudrasya yathormayaḥ॥03-170-31॥
[तान् (tān) - those (them, plural accusative masculine); अहम् (aham) - I; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; व्यधमम् (vyadhamam) - struck, pierced; गार्ध्रवाजितैः (gārdhravājitaiḥ) - resembling the cries of vultures; ते (te) - they; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; संन्यवर्तन्त (saṁnyavartanta) - recoiled, turned back; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; यथा (yathā) - as, like; उर्मयः (urmayaḥ) - waves;]
(Those I with sharp arrows struck, resembling the cries of vultures. They in battle recoiled like the waves of the ocean.)
I struck them with sharp arrows that made a sound like the cries of vultures; in battle, they recoiled like the waves of the ocean. (03-170-31)
नेमे शक्या मानुषेण युद्धेनेति प्रचिन्त्य वै। ततोऽहमानुपूर्व्येण सर्वाण्यस्त्राण्ययोजयम् ॥०३-१७०-३२॥
neme shakyā mānuṣeṇa yuddhena iti pracintya vai। tato'ham anupūrvyeṇa sarvāṇy astrāṇy ayojayam ॥03-170-32॥
[नेमे (neme) - these not; these (are) not; शक्याः (shakyāḥ) - possible; able; मानुषेण (mānuṣeṇa) - by human; by (a) man; युद्धेन (yuddhena) - by battle; by fighting; इति (iti) - thus; so; प्रचिन्त्य (pracintya) - after reflecting; having considered; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुपूर्व्येण (anupūrvyeṇa) - successively; in order; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; अयोजयम् (ayojayam) - I employed; I applied;]
(These (are) not possible by human battle—thus, having considered indeed, then I, successively, all weapons I employed.)
After reflecting that these cannot be accomplished by human battle, I then applied all the weapons in succession. (03-170-32)
ततस्तानि सहस्राणि रथानां चित्रयोधिनाम्। अस्त्राणि मम दिव्यानि प्रत्यघ्नञ्शनकैरिव ॥०३-१७०-३३॥
tatastāni sahasrāṇi rathānāṃ citrayodhinām। astrāṇi mama divyāni pratyaghnañśanakairiva॥03-170-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तानि (tāni) - those; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; रथानाम् (rathānām) - of chariots; चित्रयोधिनाम् (citrayodhinām) - of splendid warriors; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; मम (mama) - my; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; प्रत्यघ्नन् (pratyaghnan) - counteracted; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - gradually; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Then those thousands of chariots of splendid warriors, my divine missiles counteracted, as if gradually.)
Then those thousands of chariots with splendid warriors gradually counteracted my divine missiles, as if doing so slowly. (03-170-33)
रथमार्गान्विचित्रांस्ते विचरन्तो महारथाः। प्रत्यदृश्यन्त सङ्ग्रामे शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०३-१७०-३४॥
rathamārgān vicitrāṁs te vicaranto mahārathāḥ। pratyadṛśyanta saṅgrāme śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ॥03-170-34॥
[रथमार्गान् (rathamārgān) - chariot-paths; विचित्रान् (vicitrān) - variegated; ते (te) - they; विचरन्तः (vicarantaḥ) - wandering; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; प्रत्यदृश्यन्त (pratyadṛśyanta) - were seen; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in the battle; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(They, great warriors, wandering on variegated chariot-paths, were seen in the battle by hundreds and then by thousands.)
The great warriors, traversing numerous and variegated chariot-roads, were seen in the battle by hundreds and even by thousands. (03-170-34)
विचित्रमुकुटापीडा विचित्रकवचध्वजाः। विचित्राभरणाश्चैव नन्दयन्तीव मे मनः ॥०३-१७०-३५॥
vicitramukuṭāpīḍā vicitrakavacadhvajāḥ। vicitrābharaṇāścaiva nandayantīva me manaḥ ॥03-170-35॥
[विचित्रमुकुटापीडा (vicitramukuṭāpīḍā) - having wondrously adorned crowns; विचित्रकवचध्वजाः (vicitrakavacadhvajāḥ) - (they are) adorned with wondrous armors and banners; विचित्राभरणाः (vicitrābharaṇāḥ) - having wondrous ornaments; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नन्दयन्ति (nandayanti) - give delight; इव (iva) - as if; मे (me) - to me; मनः (manaḥ) - my mind;]
(Having wondrously adorned crowns, endowed with wondrous armors and banners, and wondrous ornaments indeed, as if they delight my mind.)
Their marvelous crowns, wondrous armors and banners, and wondrous ornaments indeed seem to delight my mind. (03-170-35)
अहं तु शरवर्षैस्तानस्त्रप्रमुदितै रणे। नाशक्नुवं पीडयितुं ते तु मां पर्यपीडयन् ॥०३-१७०-३६॥
ahaṁ tu śara-varṣais tān astra-pramuditai raṇe। na aśaknuvam pīḍayitum te tu māṁ paryapīḍayan॥03-170-36॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तु (tu) - but; शरवर्षैः (śara-varṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; तान् (tān) - them; अस्त्रप्रमुदितैः (astra-pramuditaiḥ) - delighted by (their) weapons; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवम् (aśaknuvam) - was able; पीडयितुम् (pīḍayitum) - to afflict; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - me; पर्यपीडयन् (paryapīḍayan) - greatly afflicted;]
(I but with showers of arrows them delighted by weapons in battle not was able to afflict; they but me greatly afflicted.)

तैः पीड्यमानो बहुभिः कृतास्त्रैः कुशलैर्युधि। व्यथितोऽस्मि महायुद्धे भयं चागान्महन्मम ॥०३-१७०-३७॥
taiḥ pīḍyamāno bahubhiḥ kṛtāstraiḥ kuśalair yudhi। vyathito'smi mahāyuddhe bhayaṁ cāgān mahān mama ॥03-170-37॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; पीड्यमानः (pīḍyamānaḥ) - afflicted; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; कृतास्त्रैः (kṛtāstraiḥ) - skillful in weapons; कुशलैः (kuśalaiḥ) - expert; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - distressed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; महायुद्धे (mahāyuddhe) - in the great battle; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; च (ca) - and; आगात् (āgāt) - has come; महत् (mahat) - great; मम (mama) - to me;]
(By them, afflicted by many, skillful in weapons, expert in battle, I am distressed in the great battle, and great fear has come to me.)
Afflicted by many skillful and expert warriors in battle, I am distressed in this great war, and great fear has come upon me. (03-170-37)
ततोऽहं देवदेवाय रुद्राय प्रणतो रणे। स्वस्ति भूतेभ्य इत्युक्त्वा महास्त्रं समयोजयम् ॥ यत्तद्रौद्रमिति ख्यातं सर्वामित्रविनाशनम् ॥०३-१७०-३८॥
tato'haṃ devadevāya rudrāya praṇato raṇe। svasti bhūtebhya ity uktvā mahāstraṃ samayojayam॥ yat tad raudram iti khyātaṃ sarvāmitravināśanam॥03-170-38॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; देवदेवाय (devadevāya) - to the god of gods; रुद्राय (rudrāya) - to Rudra; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - having bowed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; स्वस्ति (svasti) - auspiciousness; भूतेभ्यः (bhūtebhyaḥ) - to beings; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; महास्त्रम् (mahāstram) - great missile; समयोजयम् (samayojayam) - I invoked; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; रौद्रम् (raudram) - Raudra; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - famous; सर्वामित्रविनाशनम् (sarvāmitravināśanam) - destroyer of all enemies;]
(Then I, having bowed in battle to the god of gods, to Rudra, having said, "Auspiciousness to beings," invoked the great missile which is that Raudra (weapon), thus famous as the destroyer of all enemies.)
Then, having bowed in battle to Rudra, the god of gods, and having said, "Auspiciousness to beings," I invoked the Raudra missile, which is renowned as the destroyer of all enemies. (03-170-38)
ततोऽपश्यं त्रिशिरसं पुरुषं नवलोचनम्। त्रिमुखं षड्भुजं दीप्तमर्कज्वलनमूर्धजम् ॥ लेलिहानैर्महानागैः कृतशीर्षममित्रहन् ॥०३-१७०-३९॥
tato'paśyaṁ triśirasaṁ puruṣaṁ navalocanam। trimukhaṁ ṣaḍbhujaṁ dīptamarkajvalanamūrdhajam ॥ lelihānairmahānāgaiḥ kṛtaśīrṣamamitrahan ॥03-170-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; त्रिशिरसम् (triśirasam) - three-headed; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - man; नवलोचनम् (navalocanam) - nine-eyed; त्रिमुखम् (trimukham) - three-faced; षड्भुजम् (ṣaḍbhujam) - six-armed; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - shining; अर्कज्वलनमूर्धजम् (arkajvalanamūrdhajam) - with hair blazing like the sun's fire; लेलिहानैः (lelihānaiḥ) - licking; महानागैः (mahānāgaiḥ) - by great serpents; कृतशीर्षम् (kṛtaśīrṣam) - having heads for ornaments; अमित्रहन् (amitrahan) - destroyer of foes;]
(Then I saw a three-headed man, nine-eyed, three-faced, six-armed, shining, with hair blazing like the sun's fire, the destroyer of foes, having heads for ornaments, being licked by great serpents.)
Then I beheld a three-headed man, with nine eyes and three faces, having six arms, shining with hair blazing like the fire of the sun, his head adorned with great serpents licking, a destroyer of enemies. (03-170-39)
विभीस्ततस्तदस्त्रं तु घोरं रौद्रं सनातनम्। दृष्ट्वा गाण्डीवसंयोगमानीय भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१७०-४०॥
vibhīs-tatas-tadastraṃ tu ghoraṃ raudraṃ sanātanam। dṛṣṭvā gāṇḍīvasaṃyogamānīya bharatarṣabha ॥03-170-40॥
[विभीः (vibhīḥ) - afraid; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तद् (tad) - that; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; तु (tu) - but; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; रौद्रं (raudraṃ) - fierce; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गाण्डीवसंयोगम् (gāṇḍīvasaṃyogam) - the taking up of the Gandiva (bow); आनीय (ānīya) - having brought; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Afraid, then that missile, but terrible, fierce, eternal, having seen the taking up of the Gandiva, having brought, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O bull among the Bharatas, being afraid, then, upon seeing the terrible, fierce, eternal missile and the taking up of the Gandiva (bow), (he) brought (it forth). (3-170-40)
नमस्कृत्वा त्रिनेत्राय शर्वायामिततेजसे। मुक्तवान्दानवेन्द्राणां पराभावाय भारत ॥०३-१७०-४१॥
namaskṛtvā trinetrāya śarvāyāmitatejase। mukta-vān dānava-indrāṇām parābhāvāya bhārata ॥03-170-41॥

(Having bowed to the three-eyed one, to Śarva of limitless radiance, released for the defeat of the lords of the Dānavas, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, having bowed to the three-eyed Śarva of immeasurable brilliance, (he) released (the weapon) for the defeat of the lords of the Dānavas. (03-170-41)
मुक्तमात्रे ततस्तस्मिन्रूपाण्यासन्सहस्रशः। मृगाणामथ सिंहानां व्याघ्राणां च विशां पते ॥ ऋक्षाणां महिषाणां च पन्नगानां तथा गवाम् ॥०३-१७०-४२॥
muktamātre tatastasmīn rūpāṇy āsan sahasraśaḥ। mṛgāṇām atha siṃhānāṃ vyāghrāṇāṃ ca viśāṃ pate॥ ṛkṣāṇāṃ mahiṣāṇāṃ ca pannagānāṃ tathā gavām॥03-170-42॥
[मुक्तमात्रे (muktamātre) - at the very moment of being released; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - there; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; आसन् (āsan) - were; arose; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands; मृगाणाम् (mṛgāṇām) - of deer; अथ (atha) - and then; सिंहानाम् (siṃhānām) - of lions; व्याघ्राणाम् (vyāghrāṇām) - of tigers; च (ca) - and; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men; ऋक्षाणाम् (ṛkṣāṇām) - of bears; महिषाणाम् (mahiṣāṇām) - of buffaloes; च (ca) - and; पन्नगानाम् (pannagānām) - of serpents; तथा (tathā) - and also; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows;]
(At the very moment of being released, then there existed forms by the thousands—of deer, and then of lions, and tigers, O lord of men; of bears, buffaloes and also serpents and cows.)
As soon as it was released, thousands of forms appeared there—of deer, lions, tigers, O lord of men; as well as bears, buffaloes, serpents, and cows. (03-170-42)
गजानां सृमराणां च शरभाणां च सर्वशः। ऋषभाणां वराहाणां मार्जाराणां तथैव च ॥ शालावृकाणां प्रेतानां भुरुण्डानां च सर्वशः ॥०३-१७०-४३॥
gajānāṃ sṛmarāṇāṃ ca śarabhāṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ । ṛṣabhāṇāṃ varāhāṇāṃ mārjārāṇāṃ tathaiva ca ॥ śālāvṛkāṇāṃ pretānāṃ bhuruṇḍānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥03-170-43॥

गुह्यकानां च सङ्ग्रामे नैरृतानां तथैव च। झषाणां गजवक्त्राणामुलूकानां तथैव च ॥०३-१७०-४५॥
guhyakānāṃ ca saṅgrāme nairṛtānāṃ tathaiva ca। jhaṣāṇāṃ gajavaktrāṇām ulūkānāṃ tathaiva ca ॥03-170-45॥
[गुह्यकानां (guhyakānāṃ) - of the Guhyakas (a class of supernatural beings); च (ca) - and; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in the battle; नैरृतानां (nairṛtānāṃ) - of the Nairṛtas (beings presided over by Nirṛti, a class of spirits or demons); तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; झषाणां (jhaṣāṇāṃ) - of fishes; गजवक्त्राणाम् (gajavaktrāṇām) - of those with elephant faces; उलूकानां (ulūkānāṃ) - of owls; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(Of the Guhyakas and in the battle of the Nairṛtas likewise and of the fishes, of those with elephant faces, of the owls likewise and.)
There were also battles among the Guhyakas, similarly among the Nairṛtas, as well as among the fishes, the elephant-faced beings, and the owls. (03-170-45)
मीनकूर्मसमूहानां नानाशस्त्रासिपाणिनाम्। तथैव यातु धानानां गदामुद्गरधारिणाम् ॥०३-१७०-४६॥
mīnakūrmasamūhānāṃ nānāśastrāsipāṇinām। tathaiva yātu dhānānāṃ gadāmudgaradhāriṇām॥03-170-46॥
[मीनकूर्मसमूहानां (mīnakūrmasamūhānāṃ) - of groups of fishes and turtles; नानाशस्त्रासिपाणिनाम् (nānāśastrāsipāṇinām) - of those holding various weapons and swords; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; यातु धानानां (yātudhānānāṃ) - of the yātudhānas (rakṣasas, demons); गदामुद्गरधारिणाम् (gadāmudgaradhāriṇām) - of those holding maces and clubs;]

एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्नानारूपधरैस्तथा। सर्वमासीज्जगद्व्याप्तं तस्मिन्नस्त्रे विसर्जिते ॥०३-१७०-४७॥
etaiś cānyaiś ca bahubhir nānā-rūpa-dharaiḥ tathā। sarvam āsīt jagat vyāptam tasmin astre visarjite ॥03-170-47॥
[एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; नाना-रूप-धरैः (nānā-rūpa-dharaiḥ) - assuming various forms; तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; जगत् (jagat) - the world; व्याप्तम् (vyāptam) - pervaded; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - at that; अस्त्रे (astre) - weapon; विसर्जिते (visarjite) - when released;]
(By these and by others, by many thus assuming various forms, all the world was pervaded when that weapon was released.)

त्रिषिरोभिश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रैश्चतुरास्यैश्चतुर्भुजैः। अनेकरूपसंयुक्तैर्मांसमेदोवसाशिभिः ॥ अभीक्ष्णं वध्यमानास्ते दानवा ये समागताः ॥०३-१७०-४८॥
triṣirobhiś caturdaṃṣṭraiś caturāsyaiś caturbhujaiḥ। anekarūpasamyuktair māṃsamedovasāśibhiḥ॥ abhīkṣṇaṃ vadhyamānās te dānavā ye samāgatāḥ॥03-170-48॥
[त्रिषिरोभिः (triṣirobhiḥ) - with three-headed ones; चतुर्दंष्ट्रैः (caturdaṃṣṭraiḥ) - with four-fanged ones; चतुरास्यैः (caturāsyaiḥ) - with four-faced ones; चतुर्भुजैः (caturbhujaiḥ) - with four-armed ones; अनेक–रूप–संयुक्तैः (aneka-rūpa-samyuktaiḥ) - united with various forms; मांस–मेदो–वसा–शिभिः (māṃsa-medo-vasā-śibhiḥ) - by flesh, marrow, and fat eaters; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - constantly; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; ते (te) - those; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; ये (ye) - who; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - had assembled;]
(With three-headed ones, with four-fanged ones, with four-faced ones, with four-armed ones, united with various forms, by flesh, marrow, and fat eaters, constantly being slain, those Dānavas who had assembled.)
Those Dānavas who had assembled, along with beings of three heads, four fangs, four faces, and four arms, united in various forms and feeding on flesh, marrow, and fat, were constantly being slaughtered. (03-170-48)
अर्कज्वलनतेजोभिर्वज्राशनिसमप्रभैः। अद्रिसारमयैश्चान्यैर्बाणैररिविदारणैः ॥ न्यहनं दानवान्सर्वान्मुहूर्तेनैव भारत ॥०३-१७०-४९॥
arkajvalanatejobhirvajrāśanisamaprabhaiḥ। adrisāramayaiścānyairbāṇairarividāraṇaiḥ॥ nyahanaṃ dānavānsarvān muhūrtenaiva bhārata॥03-170-49॥
[अर्कज्वलनतेजोभिः (arkajvalanatejobhiḥ) - with powers of the sun and fire; वज्राशनिसमप्रभैः (vajrāśanisamaprabhaiḥ) - having brilliance equal to thunderbolt and lightning; अद्रिसारमयैः (adrisāramayaiḥ) - made of the essence of a mountain; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - other; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; अरिविदारणैः (arividāraṇaiḥ) - destroying enemies; न्यहनं (nyahanaṃ) - I struck down; दानवान् (dānavān) - the asuras; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; मुहूर्तेन (muhūrtena) - within a moment; एव (eva) - just; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(With powers of the sun and fire, having brilliance equal to thunderbolt and lightning, with arrows made of the essence of a mountain, and with other enemy-destroying arrows, I struck down all the asuras in just a moment, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, with arrows made of the essence of the mountains, having the power and brilliance of the sun, fire, thunderbolt, and lightning, and with other enemy-destroying arrows, I struck down all the asuras in an instant. (03-170-49)
गाण्डीवास्त्रप्रणुन्नांस्तान्गतासून्नभसश्च्युतान्। दृष्ट्वाहं प्राणमं भूयस्त्रिपुरघ्नाय वेधसे ॥०३-१७०-५०॥
gāṇḍīvāstra-praṇunnāṁs tān gatāsūn nabhasaś cyutān। dṛṣṭvā ahaṁ prāṇamam bhūyas tripuraghnāya vedhase॥03-170-50॥
[गाण्डीवास्त्रप्रणुन्नान् (gāṇḍīvāstra-praṇunnān) - driven by the Gandiva weapon; तान् (tān) - them; गतासून् (gatāsūn) - deprived of life; नभसः (nabhasaḥ) - from the sky; च्युतान् (cyutān) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अहम् (aham) - I; प्राणमम् (prāṇamam) - bowed; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; त्रिपुरघ्नाय (tripuraghnāya) - to the destroyer of Tripura; वेधसे (vedhase) - to the Creator;]
(Having seen them, driven by the Gandiva weapon, deprived of life, fallen from the sky, I bowed again to the destroyer of Tripura, to the Creator.)
Seeing those, driven by the Gandiva weapon, lifeless and fallen from the sky, I bowed again to the destroyer of Tripura, to the Creator. (03-170-50)
तथा रौद्रास्त्रनिष्पिष्टान्दिव्याभरणभूषितान्। निशाम्य परमं हर्षमगमद्देवसारथिः ॥०३-१७०-५१॥
tathā raudrāstraniṣpiṣṭāndivyābharaṇabhūṣitān। niśāmya paramaṃ harṣamagamaddevasārathiḥ ॥03-170-51॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; रौद्रास्त्रनिष्पिष्टान् (raudrāstra-niṣpiṣṭān) - crushed by Rudra's weapon; (raudra-āstra = Rudra's weapon; niṣpiṣṭa = crushed); दिव्याभरणभूषितान् (divya-ābharaṇa-bhūṣitān) - adorned with divine ornaments; (divya = divine; ābharaṇa = ornaments; bhūṣita = adorned); निशाम्य (niśāmya) - having observed; having noticed; परमं (paramam) - utmost; supreme; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; delight; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; reached; देवसारथिः (deva-sārathiḥ) - the charioteer of the gods;]
(Thus, having observed those adorned with divine ornaments, crushed by Rudra's weapon, the charioteer of the gods attained utmost joy.)
Thus, seeing those adorned with divine ornaments who had been crushed by Rudra's weapon, the charioteer of the gods felt supreme joy. (03-170-51)
तदसह्यं कृतं कर्म देवैरपि दुरासदम्। दृष्ट्वा मां पूजयामास मातलिः शक्रसारथिः ॥०३-१७०-५२॥
tad-asahyaṃ kṛtaṃ karma devair-api durāsadam। dṛṣṭvā māṃ pūjayāmāsa mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ ॥03-170-52॥
[तत् (tat) - that; असह्यम् (asahyam) - unbearable; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - hard to approach; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; माम् (mām) - me; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - honored; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; शक्रसारथिः (śakrasārathiḥ) - the charioteer of Śakra;]
(That unbearable action, even by the gods hard to approach, having seen me Mātali, the charioteer of Śakra, honored.)
Seeing me, Mātali, the charioteer of Śakra, honored me for that unbearable deed, which is difficult even for the gods to approach. (03-170-52)
उवाच चेदं वचनं प्रीयमाणः कृताञ्जलिः। सुरासुरैरसह्यं हि कर्म यत्साधितं त्वया ॥ न ह्येतत्संयुगे कर्तुमपि शक्तः सुरेश्वरः ॥०३-१७०-५३॥
uvāca cedaṃ vacanaṃ prīyamāṇaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ। surāsurairasahyaṃ hi karma yatsādhitaṃ tvayā॥ na hyetatsaṃyuge kartumapi śaktaḥ sureśvaraḥ॥03-170-53॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - speech; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - joining hands in reverence; सुरासुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - by the gods and asuras; असह्यं (asahyaṃ) - insurmountable; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्म (karma) - deed; यत् (yat) - which; साधितं (sādhitaṃ) - has been accomplished; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अपि (api) - even; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - the lord of the gods;]
(He spoke and this speech, being pleased, with joined hands in reverence. By the gods and asuras, (this) insurmountable deed indeed which has been accomplished by you. Not indeed this in battle to do even is able the lord of the gods.)
Being pleased, with joined hands, he said these words: This insurmountable feat, which has been accomplished by you—a feat not even the lord of the gods could perform in battle—has not been possible for gods or asuras. (03-170-53)
सुरासुरैरवध्यं हि पुरमेतत्खगं महत्। त्वया विमथितं वीर स्ववीर्यास्त्रतपोबलात् ॥०३-१७०-५४॥
surāsurair avadhyaṃ hi puram etat khagaṃ mahat। tvayā vimathitaṃ vīra svavīryāstra-tapo-balāt ॥03-170-54॥
[सुरासुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - by the gods and asuras; अवध्यं (avadhyam) - not to be slain; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरम् (puram) - city; एतत् (etat) - this; खगम् (khagam) - in the sky; महत् (mahat) - great; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; विमथितम् (vimathitam) - destroyed; वीर (vīra) - hero; स्ववीर्यास्त्रतपोबलात् (svavīryāstra-tapo-balāt) - by (your) own strength, weapons, penance and power;]
(Indeed, this great city in the sky, not to be slain by the gods and asuras, was destroyed by you, hero, by (your own) strength, weapons, penance and power.)
O hero, this great aerial city, which could not be destroyed by the gods and asuras, was indeed destroyed by you through your own strength, weapons, penance, and power. (03-170-54)
विध्वस्तेऽथ पुरे तस्मिन्दानवेषु हतेषु च। विनदन्त्यः स्त्रियः सर्वा निष्पेतुर्नगराद्बहिः ॥०३-१७०-५५॥
vidhvaste'tha pure tasmin dānaveṣu hateṣu ca. vinadantyaḥ striyaḥ sarvā niṣpetur nagarād bahiḥ ॥03-170-55॥
[विध्वस्ते (vidhvaste) - destroyed; अथ (atha) - then; पुरे (pure) - in the city; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - that; दानवेषु (dānaveṣu) - among the dānavas (demons); हतेषु (hateṣu) - when slain; च (ca) - and; विनदन्त्यः (vinadantyaḥ) - wailing; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; निष्पेतुः (niṣpetuḥ) - came out; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside;]
(When the city was destroyed, then, and the dānavas had been slain, and as all the women were wailing, all came out from the city outside.)
When that city had been destroyed and the dānavas slain, then all the women, wailing, came out of the city to the outside. (03-170-55)
प्रकीर्णकेश्यो व्यथिताः कुरर्य इव दुःखिताः। पेतुः पुत्रान्पितॄन्भ्रातॄञ्शोचमाना महीतले ॥०३-१७०-५६॥
prakīrṇakeśyo vyathitāḥ kurarya iva duḥkhitāḥ । petuḥ putrān pitṝn bhrātṝ̄n śocamānā mahītale ॥03-170-56॥
[प्रकीर्णकेश्यः (prakīrṇakeśyaḥ) - with loosened hair; व्यथिताः (vyathitāḥ) - agitated; कुरर्यः (kuraryaḥ) - female curlews; इव (iva) - like; दुःखिताः (duḥkhitāḥ) - distressed; पेतुः (petuḥ) - fell; पुत्रान् (putrān) - (their) sons; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝ̄n) - brothers; शोचमाना (śocamānā) - lamenting; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth;]
(With loosened hair, agitated, like female curlews, distressed, lamenting sons, fathers, brothers, they fell on the earth.)
With their hair disheveled, agitated and distressed, like female curlews, lamenting sons, fathers, and brothers, they fell upon the earth. (03-170-56)
रुदन्त्यो दीनकण्ठ्यस्ता विनदन्त्यो हतेश्वराः। उरांसि पाणिभिर्घ्नन्त्यः प्रस्रस्तस्रग्विभूषणाः ॥०३-१७०-५७॥
rudantyo dīnakaṇṭhy astā vinadantyo hateśvarāḥ। urāṃsi pāṇibhir ghnantyaḥ prasrasta-srag-vibhūṣaṇāḥ॥03-170-57॥
[रुदन्त्यः (rudantyaḥ) - weeping; दीनकण्ठ्यः (dīnakaṇṭhyaḥ) - with feeble voices; अस्ताः (astāḥ) - they (those women); विनदन्त्यः (vinadantyaḥ) - wailing loudly; हतेश्वराः (hateśvarāḥ) - whose lords are slain; उरांसि (urāṃsi) - their breasts; पाणिभिः (pāṇibhiḥ) - with hands; घ्नन्त्यः (ghnantyaḥ) - striking; प्रस्रस्त (prasrasta) - fallen; स्रग् (srag) - garlands; विभूषणाः (vibhūṣaṇāḥ) - and ornaments;]
(Weeping, with feeble voices, those whose lords are slain, wailing, striking their breasts with hands, with garlands and ornaments fallen.)
Those women, whose lords were slain, weeping with feeble voices and wailing loudly, struck their breasts with their hands; their garlands and ornaments had fallen. (3-170-57)
तच्छोकयुक्तमश्रीकं दुःखदैन्यसमाहतम्। न बभौ दानवपुरं हतत्विट्कं हतेश्वरम् ॥०३-१७०-५८॥
tac chokayuktam aśrīkaṃ duḥkha-dainya-samāhatam। na babhau dānavapuraṃ hatatviṭkaṃ hateśvaram॥03-170-58॥
[तत् (tat) - that; शोकयुक्तम् (śoka-yuktam) - filled with sorrow; अश्रीकम् (aśrīkam) - bereft of fortune; दुःखदैन्यसमाहितम् (duḥkha-dainya-samāhatam) - overwhelmed by distress and misery; न (na) - not; बभौ (babhau) - shone; दानवपुरम् (dānava-puram) - the city of the Dānavas; हतत्विट्कम् (hata-tviṭkam) - with its splendor slain; हतेश्वरम् (hata-īśvaram) - and its lord destroyed;]
(That city, filled with sorrow, bereft of fortune, overwhelmed by distress and misery, did not shine; the city of the Dānavas, with its splendor slain and its lord destroyed.)
That city, weighed down with sorrow, deprived of its fortune and overwhelmed by misery, no longer shone—the city of the Dānavas, bereft of splendor and its ruler slain. (03-170-58)
गन्धर्वनगराकारं हतनागमिव ह्रदम्। शुष्कवृक्षमिवारण्यमदृश्यमभवत्पुरम् ॥०३-१७०-५९॥
gandharvanagarākāraṃ hatanāgam iva hradam | śuṣkavṛkṣam iva āraṇyam adṛśyam abhavat puram ॥03-170-59॥
[गन्धर्वनगराकारं (gandharvanagarākāram) - having the appearance of a gandharva-city; हतनागमिव (hatanāgam iva) - like a lake deprived of serpents; ह्रदम् (hradam) - lake; शुष्कवृक्षमिव (śuṣkavṛkṣam iva) - like a withered tree; आरण्यम् (āraṇyam) - forest; अदृश्यम् (adṛśyam) - not visible; invisible; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(Having the appearance of a gandharva-city, like a lake deprived of serpents, like a withered tree, like a forest, the city became invisible.)
The city became invisible, resembling a phantom gandharva-city, like a lake from which serpents have been driven off, or like a forest of withered trees. (03-170-59)
मां तु संहृष्टमनसं क्षिप्रं मातलिरानयत्। देवराजस्य भवनं कृतकर्माणमाहवात् ॥०३-१७०-६०॥
māṃ tu saṃhṛṣṭamanasaṃ kṣipraṃ mātalir ānayat। devarājasya bhavanaṃ kṛtakarmāṇam āhavāt॥03-170-60॥
[मां (māṃ) - me; तु (tu) - but; संहृष्टमनसं (saṃhṛṣṭamanasam) - cheerful-minded; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; आनयत् (ānayat) - led; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of the gods; भवनं (bhavanam) - abode; कृतकर्माणम् (kṛtakarmāṇam) - who had accomplished his task; आहवात् (āhavāt) - from the battle;]
(Me but, cheerful-minded, quickly, Mātali led; of the king of the gods the abode, who had accomplished his task, from the battle.)
But Mātali quickly led me, cheerful in mind, from the battle to the abode of the king of the gods, after the task was accomplished. (03-170-60)
हिरण्यपुरमारुज्य निहत्य च महासुरान्। निवातकवचांश्चैव ततोऽहं शक्रमागमम् ॥०३-१७०-६१॥
hiraṇyapuram ārujya nihatya ca mahāsurān| nivātakavacāṁś caiva tato'haṁ śakram āgamam ॥03-170-61॥
[हिरण्यपुरम् (hiraṇyapuram) - the city of gold; आरुज्य (ārujya) - having mounted; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; च (ca) - and; महासुरान् (mahāsurān) - mighty asuras; निवातकवचान् (nivātakavacān) - the Nivātakavaca (demons); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; आगमम् (āgamam) - came (to);]
(Having mounted the city of gold, and having slain the mighty asuras and indeed the Nivātakavaca demons, then I came to Indra.)
After ascending the city of gold and destroying the great asuras and the Nivātakavaca demons, I then came to Indra. (03-170-61)
मम कर्म च देवेन्द्रं मातलिर्विस्तरेण तत्। सर्वं विश्रावयामास यथा भूतं महाद्युते ॥०३-१७०-६२॥
mama karma ca devendraṃ mātalirvistareṇa tat। sarvaṃ viśrāvayāmāsa yathā bhūtaṃ mahādyute ॥03-170-62॥
[मम (mama) - of me; कर्म (karma) - action; च (ca) - and; देवेन्द्रं (devendram) - to Devendra (Indra); मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; विश्रावयामास (viśrāvayāmāsa) - caused to be announced; यथा (yathā) - as; भूतं (bhūtam) - it had happened; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(Of me action and to Devendra, Mātali in detail that all caused to be announced as it had happened, O greatly radiant one.)
Mātali recounted all my actions to Devendra in detail just as they had happened, O greatly radiant one. (03-170-62)
हिरण्यपुरघातं च मायानां च निवारणम्। निवातकवचानां च वधं सङ्ख्ये महौजसाम् ॥०३-१७०-६३॥
hiraṇyapuraghātaṃ ca māyānāṃ ca nivāraṇam। nivātakavacānāṃ ca vadhaṃ saṅkhye mahaujasām ॥03-170-63॥
[हिरण्यपुरघातं (hiraṇyapuraghātam) - destruction of the city Hiranyapura; च (ca) - and; मायानां (māyānām) - of the Māyās (magicians or magical beings); च (ca) - and; निवारणम् (nivāraṇam) - repelling; निवातकवचानां (nivātakavacānām) - of the Nivātakavaca (a class of beings or asuras); च (ca) - and; वधं (vadham) - slaughter; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; महौजसाम् (mahaujasām) - of those possessing great might;]
(Destruction of Hiranyapura and repelling of the Māyās, and the slaughter in battle of the Nivātakavacas, mighty ones.)
The destruction of Hiranyapura, thwarting of the Māyās, and slaying in battle of the mighty Nivātakavacas. (03-170-63)
तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान्प्रीतः सहस्राक्षः पुरंदरः। मरुद्भिः सहितः श्रीमान्साधु साध्वित्यथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१७०-६४॥
tac chrutvā bhagavān prītaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ puraṁdaraḥ। marudbhiḥ sahitaḥ śrīmān sādhu sādhu ity athābravīt॥03-170-64॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious (one); प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed; पुरंदरः (puraṁdaraḥ) - Purandara; मरुद्भिः (marudbhiḥ) - with the Maruts; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - glorious; साधु साधु (sādhu sādhu) - 'well done! well done!'; इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
(That having heard, the illustrious, pleased, thousand-eyed Purandara, with the Maruts together, glorious, 'Well done! Well done!' thus then he said.)
Hearing that, the illustrious and pleased Indra, thousand-eyed Purandara, together with the Maruts, said, 'Well done! Well done!' (03-170-64)
ततो मां देवराजो वै समाश्वास्य पुनः पुनः। अब्रवीद्विबुधैः सार्धमिदं सुमधुरं वचः ॥०३-१७०-६५॥
tato māṃ devarājo vai samāśvāsya punaḥ punaḥ। abravīdvibudhaiḥ sārdhamidaṃ sumadhuraṃ vacaḥ॥03-170-65॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; after that; माम् (mām) - me; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of gods; Indra; वै (vai) - indeed; समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having consoled; having reassured; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; repeatedly; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; विबुधैः (vibudhaiḥ) - with the gods; with the wise ones; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; along with; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सुमधुरं (sumadhuraṃ) - very sweet; most sweet; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words;]
(Then the king of gods, indeed, having consoled me again and again, said together with the gods these very sweet words.)
Then the king of gods, Indra, having repeatedly consoled me, spoke these most sweet words together with the other gods. (03-170-65)
अतिदेवासुरं कर्म कृतमेतत्त्वया रणे। गुर्वर्थश्च महान्पार्थ कृतः शत्रून्घ्नता मम ॥०३-१७०-६६॥
atidevā-asuraṃ karma kṛtam etat tvayā raṇe। gurvarthaś ca mahān pārtha kṛtaḥ śatrūn-ghnatā mama॥03-170-66॥
[अति (ati) - beyond; देवासुरं (devāsuram) - of gods and asuras; कर्म (karma) - deed; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; एतत् (etat) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; गुर्वर्थः (gurvarthaḥ) - for the sake of the teacher; च (ca) - and; महान् (mahān) - great; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; घ्नता (ghnatā) - by slaying; मम (mama) - for me;]
(Beyond what is done by gods and asuras, this deed has been done by you in battle. And for the sake of the teacher also, O Pārtha, a great (deed) has been done by slaying enemies for me.)
O Pārtha, in the battle you have performed a deed beyond those of gods and asuras. And, by slaying my enemies, you have accomplished a great act for the sake of the teacher. (3-170-66)
एवमेव सदा भाव्यं स्थिरेणाजौ धनञ्जय। असंमूढेन चास्त्राणां कर्तव्यं प्रतिपादनम् ॥०३-१७०-६७॥
evameva sadā bhāvyaṃ sthireṇājau dhanañjaya. asaṃmūḍhena cāstrāṇāṃ kartavyaṃ pratipādanam ॥03-170-67॥
[एवम् एव (evam eva) - thus only; सदा (sadā) - always; भाव्यं (bhāvyaṃ) - to be considered; स्थिरेण (sthireṇa) - by the steadfast; अजौ (ajāu) - in battle; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; असंमूढेन (asaṃmūḍhena) - by the not-deluded; च (ca) - and; अस्त्राणां (astrāṇām) - of (the) missiles; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - obligation; प्रतिपादनम् (pratipādanam) - application;]
(Thus only always to be considered by the steadfast in battle, O Dhananjaya; and by the not-deluded, the obligation of the missiles' application.)
In this way always, O Dhananjaya, the steadfast in battle should consider; and one who is not deluded ought to apply the use of missiles. (03-170-67)
अविषह्यो रणे हि त्वं देवदानवराक्षसैः। सयक्षासुरगन्धर्वैः सपक्षिगणपन्नगैः ॥०३-१७०-६८॥
aviṣahyo raṇe hi tvaṁ devadānavarākṣasaiḥ। sayakṣāsuragandharvaiḥ sapakṣigaṇapannagaiḥ॥03-170-68॥
[अविषह्यः (aviṣahyaḥ) - impossible to be overcome; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; देवदानवराक्षसैः (devadānavarākṣasaiḥ) - by gods, demons, and rākṣasas; स-यक्षासुरगन्धर्वैः (sa-yakṣāsuragandharvaiḥ) - with yakṣas, asuras, and gandharvas; स- पक्षिगण- पन्नगैः (sa-pakṣigaṇa-pannagaiḥ) - with flocks of birds and serpents;]
(Impossible to be overcome in battle indeed you by gods, demons, and rākṣasas; with yakṣas, asuras, and gandharvas; with flocks of birds and serpents.)
You are indeed impossible to be overcome in battle by gods, demons, and rākṣasas, together with yakṣas, asuras, gandharvas, and also flocks of birds and serpents. (03-170-68)
वसुधां चापि कौन्तेय त्वद्बाहुबलनिर्जिताम्। पालयिष्यति धर्मात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-१७०-६९॥
vasudhāṁ cāpi kaunteya tvad-bāhu-bala-nirjitām। pālayiṣyati dharmātmā kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥03-170-69॥
[वसुधां (vasudhām) - the earth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; त्वद्बाहुबलनिर्जिताम् (tvad-bāhu-bala-nirjitām) - conquered by the strength of your arm; पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - will protect; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - the son of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(The earth, also, O son of Kunti, conquered by the strength of your arm, the righteous-souled son of Kunti, Yudhishthira, will protect.)
O son of Kunti, the earth that has been conquered by the strength of your arm will be protected by the righteous Yudhishthira, son of Kunti. (03-170-69)
