atraiva ca sarasvatyā gītaṁ parapurañjaya| pṛṣṭayā muninā vīra śṛṇu tārkṣyeṇa dhīmatā ॥03-184-1॥

किं नु श्रेयः पुरुषस्येह भद्रे; कथं कुर्वन्न च्यवते स्वधर्मात्। आचक्ष्व मे चारुसर्वाङ्गि सर्वं; त्वयानुशिष्टो न च्यवेयं स्वधर्मात् ॥०३-१८४-२॥
kiṁ nu śreyaḥ puruṣasyeha bhadre; kathaṁ kurvan na cyavate svadharmāt. ācakṣva me cārusarvāṅgi sarvaṁ; tvayānuśiṣṭo na cyaveyaṁ svadharmāt ॥03-184-2॥

(What indeed is the highest good of a man here, O auspicious one? How, acting, does he not fall away from his own duty? Declare to me all, O beautiful-limbed one; being instructed by you, I may not fall away from my own duty. (03-184-2))
O auspicious one, what truly is the highest good for a person here? How does one act so as not to deviate from his own duty? Please tell me everything, O beautiful-limbed one; being instructed by you, may I not swerve from my own duty. (03-184-2)
कथं चाग्निं जुहुयां पूजये वा; कस्मिन्काले केन धर्मो न नश्येत्। एतत्सर्वं सुभगे प्रब्रवीहि; यथा लोकान्विरजाः सञ्चरेयम् ॥०३-१८४-३॥
kathaṃ cāgniṃ juhuyāṃ pūjaye vā; kasminkāle kena dharmo na naśyet. etatsarvaṃ subhage prabravīhi; yathā lokān virajāḥ sañcareyam ॥03-184-3॥
[कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; अग्निं (agniṃ) - fire; जुहुयाम् (juhuyām) - I should offer (oblations); पूजये (pūjaye) - I should worship; वा (vā) - or; कस्मिन् (kasmīn) - in what; काले (kāle) - time; केन (kena) - by what; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; न (na) - not; नश्येत् (naśyet) - should perish; एतत् (etat) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate one; प्रब्रवीहि (prabravīhi) - please tell; यथा (yathā) - so that; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; विरजाः (virajāḥ) - pure (ones); सञ्चरेयम् (sañcareyam) - I may attain;]
(How and fire I should offer (oblations), or I should worship; in what time, by what righteousness should not perish. This all, O fortunate one, please tell, so that worlds pure I may attain.)
How should I offer oblations to the fire, or worship it; at what time, by what means, so that righteousness does not perish? O fortunate one, please tell me all this, so that I may attain the pure worlds. (03-184-3)

एवं पृष्टा प्रीतियुक्तेन तेन; शुश्रूषुमीक्ष्योत्तमबुद्धियुक्तम्। तार्क्ष्यं विप्रं धर्मयुक्तं हितं च; सरस्वती वाक्यमिदं बभाषे ॥०३-१८४-४॥
evaṃ pṛṣṭā prītiyuktena tena; śuśrūṣum īkṣya uttamabuddhiyuktam। tārkṣyaṃ vipraṃ dharmayuktaṃ hitaṃ ca; sarasvatī vākyam idaṃ babhāṣe ॥03-184-4॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पृष्टा (pṛṣṭā) - having been asked; प्रीतियुक्तेन (prītiyuktena) - with affection-presence; तेन (tena) - by him; शुश्रूषुम् (śuśrūṣum) - desiring to listen; ईक्ष्य (īkṣya) - having observed; उत्तमबुद्धियुक्तम् (uttamabuddhiyuktam) - possessed of excellent intellect; तार्क्ष्यम् (tārkṣyam) - Tārkṣya; विप्रम् (vipram) - the sage; धर्मयुक्तम् (dharmayuktam) - endowed with righteousness; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; च (ca) - and; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvatī; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; इदं (idaṃ) - these; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke;]
(Thus, having been asked by him endowed with affection, seeing Tārkṣya the sage endowed with utmost intellect, desirous to hear, bearing righteousness and benefit, Sarasvatī spoke these words.)
Thus, when questioned with affection by him and observing Tārkṣya, the sage of excellent intellect, eager to listen, righteous and well-intentioned, Sarasvatī spoke these words. (03-184-4)

यो ब्रह्म जानाति यथाप्रदेशं; स्वाध्यायनित्यः शुचिरप्रमत्तः। स वै पुरो देवपुरस्य गन्ता; सहामरैः प्राप्नुयात्प्रीतियोगम् ॥०३-१८४-५॥
yo brahma jānāti yathāpradeśaṃ; svādhyāyanityaḥ śucirapramattaḥ. sa vai puro devapurasya gantā; sahāmaraiḥ prāpnuyāt prītiyogam ॥03-184-5॥
[यो (yo) - who; ब्रह्म (brahma) - the absolute; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; यथा (yathā) - according as; प्रदेशं (pradeśam) - the place; स्वाध्यायनित्यः (svādhyāyanityaḥ) - always devoted to study; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - vigilant; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरः (puraḥ) - before; देवपुरस्य (devapurasya) - of the city of the gods; गन्ता (gantā) - the goer; सह (saha) - with; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - with the immortals; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - he may obtain; प्रीतियोगम् (prītiyogam) - connection with joy;]
(Who the absolute knows according as the place; always devoted to study, pure, vigilant. He indeed before the city of the gods the goer; with the immortals may obtain connection with joy.)
He who knows Brahman according to the proper method, is always devoted to study, pure and vigilant; that person indeed will be the forerunner to the city of the gods, and together with the immortals may attain the state of joy. (03-184-5)
तत्र स्म रम्या विपुला विशोकाः; सुपुष्पिताः पुष्करिण्यः सुपुण्याः। अकर्दमा मीनवत्यः सुतीर्था; हिरण्मयैरावृताः पुण्डरीकैः ॥०३-१८४-६॥
tatra sma ramyā vipulā viśokāḥ; supuṣpitāḥ puṣkariṇyaḥ supuṇyāḥ. akardamā mīnavatyaḥ sutīrthā; hiraṇmayairāvṛtāḥ puṇḍarīkaiḥ ॥03-184-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्म (sma) - indeed; रम्या (ramyā) - beautiful; विपुला (vipulā) - spacious; विशोकाः (viśokāḥ) - free from sorrow; सुपुष्पिताः (supuṣpitāḥ) - fully blossomed; पुष्करिण्यः (puṣkariṇyaḥ) - lakes; सुपुण्याः (supuṇyāḥ) - very auspicious; अकर्दमा (akardamā) - free from mud; मीनवत्यः (mīnavatyaḥ) - abounding in fish; सुतीर्था (sutīrthā) - having good fords; हिरण्मयैः (hiraṇmayaiḥ) - with golden; आवृताः (āvṛtāḥ) - covered; पुण्डरीकैः (puṇḍarīkaiḥ) - by lotuses;]
(There indeed beautiful spacious free from sorrow; fully blossomed lakes very auspicious. Free from mud abounding in fish having good fords; with golden covered by lotuses (03-184-6))
There indeed were beautiful, spacious, and sorrowless lakes, abundantly blossomed and highly auspicious. Free from mud, teeming with fish, having excellent fords, and covered with golden lotuses. (03-184-6)
तासां तीरेष्वासते पुण्यकर्मा; महीयमानः पृथगप्सरोभिः। सुपुण्यगन्धाभिरलङ्कृताभि; र्हिरण्यवर्णाभिरतीव हृष्टः ॥०३-१८४-७॥
tāsāṃ tīreṣv āsate puṇyakarmā; mahīyamānaḥ pṛthag apsarobhiḥ. supuṇyagandhābhir alaṅkṛtābhiḥ; hiraṇyavarṇābhir atīva hṛṣṭaḥ ॥03-184-7॥
[तासां (tāsām) - of them; तीरेषु (tīreṣu) - on the banks; आसते (āsate) - (he) sits; पुण्यकर्मा (puṇyakarmā) - one whose deeds are meritorious; महीयमानः (mahīyamānaḥ) - being honored; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - by apsarases (celestial nymphs); सुपुण्यगन्धाभिः (supuṇyagandhābhiḥ) - with very auspicious fragrance; अलङ्कृताभिः (alaṅkṛtābhiḥ) - adorned; हिरण्यवर्णाभिः (hiraṇyavarṇābhiḥ) - with golden (having the color of gold); अतीव (atīva) - very much; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted;]
(Of them, on the banks, sits one whose deeds are meritorious; being honored separately by apsarases, with very auspicious fragrance, adorned, with golden ones, very much delighted.)
On their banks sits a meritorious man, greatly honored by many apsarases, who are adorned with auspicious fragrances and golden hues, feeling very delighted. (03-184-7)
परं लोकं गोप्रदास्त्वाप्नुवन्ति; दत्त्वानड्वाहं सूर्यलोकं व्रजन्ति। वासो दत्त्वा चन्द्रमसः स लोकं; दत्त्वा हिरण्यममृतत्वमेति ॥०३-१८४-८॥
paraṃ lokaṃ gopradāstv āpnuvanti; dattvā aṇaḍvāhaṃ sūryalokam vrajanti. vāso dattvā candramasaḥ sa lokaṃ; dattvā hiraṇyam amṛtatvam eti ॥03-184-8॥
[परं (paraṃ) - highest; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; गोप्रदाः (gopradāḥ) - givers of cows; त्व् (tv) - indeed; आप्नुवन्ति (āpnuvanti) - attain; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; अनड्वाहं (aṇaḍvāhaṃ) - draught animal; सूर्यलोकं (sūryalokaṃ) - sun's world; व्रजन्ति (vrajanti) - go; वासो (vāso) - clothing; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; चन्द्रमसः (candramasaḥ) - of the moon; स (sa) - that; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; हिरण्यम् (hiraṇyam) - gold; अमृतत्वम् (amṛtatvam) - immortality; एति (eti) - attains;]
(The givers of cows indeed attain the highest world; having given a draught animal, they go to the sun's world. Having given clothing, they [attain] that world of the moon; having given gold, [one] attains immortality. (03-184-8))
Those who give cows truly reach the highest worlds; by giving a draught animal, they go to the world of the Sun; by donating clothing, they gain the world of the Moon; and by giving gold, one attains immortality. (03-184-8)
धेनुं दत्त्वा सुव्रतां साधुदोहां; कल्याणवत्सामपलायिनीं च। यावन्ति रोमाणि भवन्ति तस्या; स्तावद्वर्षाण्यश्नुते स्वर्गलोकम् ॥०३-१८४-९॥
dhenuṁ dattvā suvratāṁ sādhudohāṁ; kalyāṇavatsāmapalāyinīṁ ca. yāvanti romāṇi bhavanti tasyā; stāvadvarṣāṇyaśnute svargalokam ॥03-184-9॥
[धेनुं (dhenuṁ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; सुव्रतां (suvratāṁ) - of good vows; साधुदोहां (sādhudohāṁ) - giving proper milk; कल्याणवत्साम् (kalyāṇavatsām) - having auspicious calf; अपलायिनीं (apalāyinīṁ) - not running away; च (ca) - and; यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; रोमाणि (romāṇi) - hairs; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; स्तावत् (stāvat) - so many; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - heavenly world;]
(Having given a cow of good vows, giving proper milk, having an auspicious calf, not running away, and as many hairs are of her, so many years one attains the heavenly world.)
One who gives a cow of good vows, that gives proper milk, has an auspicious calf, and does not run away, attains the heavenly world for as many years as there are hairs on her body. (03-184-9)
अनड्वाहं सुव्रतं यो ददाति; हलस्य वोढारमनन्तवीर्यम्। धुरन्धरं बलवन्तं युवानं; प्राप्नोति लोकान्दश धेनुदस्य ॥०३-१८४-१०॥
anaḍvāhaṃ suvrataṃ yo dadāti; halasya voḍhāram-anantavīryam। dhurandharaṃ balavantaṃ yuvānaṃ; prāpnoti lokān daśa dhenudasya ॥03-184-10॥
[अनड्वाहं (anaḍvāham) - a bullock for drawing the plough; सुव्रतम् (suvratam) - of good vows; यः (yaḥ) - who; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; हलस्य (halasya) - of the plough; वोढारम् (voḍhāram) - bearer; अनन्तवीर्यम् (anantavīryam) - of unlimited strength; धुरन्धरम् (dhurandharam) - bearer of the yoke; बलवन्तम् (balavantam) - powerful; युवानम् (yuvānam) - young; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; दश (daśa) - ten; धेनुदस्य (dhenudasya) - of giver of cows;]
(He who gives a bullock of good vows, the bearer of the plough of unlimited strength, bearer of the yoke, powerful, young, obtains the ten worlds of the giver of cows.)
Whoever gives a young, powerful bullock of good vows—one that draws the plough and has infinite strength and bears the yoke—attains the ten worlds attained by a giver of cows. (03-184-10)
यः सप्त वर्षाणि जुहोति तार्क्ष्य; हव्यं त्वग्नौ सुव्रतः साधुशीलः। सप्तावरान्सप्त पूर्वान्पुनाति; पितामहानात्मनः कर्मभिः स्वैः ॥०३-१८४-११॥
yaḥ sapta varṣāṇi juhoti tārkṣya; havyaṃ tvagnau suvrataḥ sādhuśīlaḥ. saptāvarān sapta pūrvān punāti; pitāmahān ātmanaḥ karmabhiḥ svaiḥ ॥03-184-11॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; सप्त (sapta) - seven; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; जुहोति (juhoti) - offers (sacrificial oblation); तार्क्ष्य (tārkṣya) - O Tārkṣya; हव्यं (havyaṃ) - oblations; तु (tu) - but; अग्नौ (agnau) - into the fire; सुव्रतः (suvrataḥ) - one of good vows; साधुशीलः (sādhuśīlaḥ) - one of virtuous nature; सप्तावरान् (saptāvarān) - seven present ancestors (including self); सप्त (sapta) - seven; पूर्वान् (pūrvān) - former (ancestors); पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; पितामहान् (pitāmahān) - grandfathers; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - his own;]
(Who, O Tārkṣya, for seven years offers (sacrificial) oblation, the oblation but into the fire, (being) of good vows, of virtuous nature, purifies seven present and seven former (ancestors); the grandfathers of oneself by his own actions.)
O Tārkṣya, one who, having good vows and a virtuous nature, offers oblations into the fire for seven years, purifies with his own actions his seven paternal ancestors and seven previous ancestors—his grandfathers. (03-184-11)

किमग्निहोत्रस्य व्रतं पुराण; माचक्ष्व मे पृच्छतश्चारुरूपे। त्वयानुशिष्टोऽहमिहाद्य विद्यां; यदग्निहोत्रस्य व्रतं पुराणम् ॥०३-१८४-१२॥
kimagnihotrasya vrataṃ purāṇa; mācakṣva me pṛcchataścārurūpe. tvayānuśiṣṭo'hamihādya vidyāṃ; yadagnihotrasya vrataṃ purāṇam ॥03-184-12॥

(What of Agnihotra vow ancient; do not speak to me asking, O beautiful one. By you instructed I here today knowledge (of) what of Agnihotra vow ancient.)
What is the ancient vow of Agnihotra? O beautiful one, tell me who am asking. Here today, instructed by you, I wish to know what is the ancient vow of Agnihotra. (03-184-12)
सरस्वत्युवाच॥

[सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvatī (the goddess); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Sarasvatī said.
न चाशुचिर्नाप्यनिर्णिक्तपाणि; र्नाब्रह्मविज्जुहुयान्नाविपश्चित्। बुभुक्षवः शुचिकामा हि देवा; नाश्रद्दधानाद्धि हविर्जुषन्ति ॥०३-१८४-१३॥
na cāśucir nāpy anirṇikta-pāṇir nābrahma-vit juhuyān nā vipaścit | bubhukṣavaḥ śuci-kāmā hi devāḥ na aśraddadhānāt hi haviḥ juṣanti ॥03-184-13॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अशुचिः (aśuciḥ) - impure (person); न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; अनिर्णिक्तपाणिः (anirṇikta-pāṇiḥ) - whose hands are not washed; न (na) - not; अब्रहम्वित् (abrahmavit) - not knower of sacred formula (Brahman); जुहुयात् (juhuyāt) - should offer (oblation); न (na) - not; अविपश्चित् (avipaścit) - unknowing (of ritual); बुभुक्षवः (bubhukṣavaḥ) - desiring to eat; शुचिकामाः (śucikāmāḥ) - desiring purity; हि (hi) - indeed; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; न (na) - not; अश्रद्दधानात् (aśraddadhānāt) - from one lacking faith; हि (hi) - indeed; हविः (haviḥ) - offering (oblation); जुषन्ति (juṣanti) - they accept;]
(Not and impure not also whose hands are not washed not not-knower of sacred formula should offer not unknowing (of ritual). Desiring to eat, desiring purity indeed are the gods; not from one lacking faith indeed do they accept the oblation.)
Neither an impure person, nor one whose hands are unwashed, nor a person ignorant of the sacred formula, nor one unlearned in ritual should offer oblations. The gods, who desire food and purity, indeed do not accept oblations from one who lacks faith. (03-184-13)
नाश्रोत्रियं देवहव्ये नियुञ्ज्या; न्मोघं परा सिञ्चति तादृशो हि। अपूर्णमश्रोत्रियमाह तार्क्ष्य; न वै तादृग्जुहुयादग्निहोत्रम् ॥०३-१८४-१४॥
nāśrotriyaṃ devahavye niyuñjyā; namoghaṃ parā siñcati tādṛśo hi. apūrṇamaśrotriyamāha tārkṣya; na vai tādṛgjuhuyādagnihotram ॥03-184-14॥
[नाश्रोत्रियं (nāśrotriyam) - not to a non-śrotriya; (śrotriya = one versed in the Vedas); देवहव्ये (devahavye) - in offering to the gods; नियुञ्ज्या (niyuñjyā) - one should not appoint; (should not assign;) न (na) - not; अमोघं (amogham) - not fruitless; (with result;) परा (parā) - away; (in vain;) सिञ्चति (siñcati) - he pours (the offering); तादृशः (tādṛśaḥ) - such (a one); हि (hi) - indeed; अपूर्णम् (apūrṇam) - incomplete; not complete; अश्रोत्रियम् (aśrotriyam) - not Śrotriya; (not learned in Veda;) आह (āha) - he says; तार्क्ष्य (tārkṣya) - Tārkṣya (Garuda); न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; तादृक् (tādṛk) - such as that; जुहुयात् (juhuyāt) - should offer; अग्निहोत्रम् (agnihotram) - Agnihotra (sacrifice);]
(Not to a non-śrotriya in the god's offering one should appoint; not in vain away pours such indeed. Incomplete not-śrotriya he says, Tārkṣya; not indeed such should pour Agnihotra.)
One should not appoint a non-śrotriya (unversed in Veda) to the offering for the gods; such a person pours the offering away in vain. Tārkṣya says that a non-śrotriya is incomplete; one should indeed not let such a person perform Agnihotra. (03-184-14)
कृशानुं ये जुह्वति श्रद्दधानाः; सत्यव्रता हुतशिष्टाशिनश्च। गवां लोकं प्राप्य ते पुण्यगन्धं; पश्यन्ति देवं परमं चापि सत्यम् ॥०३-१८४-१५॥

(Those who, possessing faith, offer to the fire, who are truthful in vows, and eat the remnants of oblations, having attained the world of cows of pure fragrance, they see the God, supreme, and also the Truth.)
Those who offer oblations to the fire with faith, who are truthful in their vows and eat the remnants of sacrifices, after reaching the sinless, fragrant realm of the cows, see the Supreme God and also the Truth. (03-184-15)

(Having become the knower of the field in the state of the other world, at the rise of actions, having entered into wise intelligence, and wisdom, the goddess, O fortunate one, having considered, I ask you—who indeed are you, O beautiful form?)
O beautiful one with charming form, who are you, who have become the knower of the field at the time of death, entered into intelligence at the rise of action, and are called wisdom, the goddess? O fortunate one, considering thus, I ask you—who indeed are you? (03-184-16)

agnihotrād aham abhyāgatāsmi; vipraṛṣabhāṇāṃ saṃśayacchedanāya. tvatsaṃyogād aham etad abruvaṃ; bhāve sthitā tathyam arthaṃ yathāvat ॥03-184-17॥

(From the agnihotra I have arrived; for the cutting of doubt of the best of brāhmaṇas. By union with you I spoke this; being established in the (true) state, the true meaning as it is. (03-184-17))
I have come here from the agnihotra for resolving the doubts of the foremost brāhmaṇas. Because I am united with you, I have spoken this, remaining in the true state, the true meaning as it is. (03-184-17)

na hi tvayā sadṛśī kācid asti; vibhrājase hy atimātraṁ yathā śrīḥ. rūpaṁ ca te divyam atyantakāntaṁ; prajñāṁ ca devīṁ subhage bibharṣi ॥03-184-18॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सदृशी (sadṛśī) - similar; काचित् (kācit) - any (female); अस्ति (asti) - exists; विभ्राजसे (vibhrājase) - you shine; हि (hi) - indeed; अतिमात्रम् (atimātram) - exceedingly; यथा (yathā) - like; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - Splendor; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अत्यन्तकान्तम् (atyantakāntam) - utterly beautiful; प्रज्ञाम् (prajñām) - wisdom; च (ca) - and; देवीम् (devīm) - goddess; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate one; बिभर्षि (bibharṣi) - you possess;]
(Not indeed by you similar any (female) exists; you shine indeed exceedingly like Splendor. Form and your divine utterly beautiful; wisdom and goddess, O fortunate one, you possess.)
Indeed, there is no one like you; you shine exceedingly like Splendor herself. Your form is divinely and supremely beautiful; and, O fortunate one, you possess the wisdom of a goddess. (03-184-18)

श्रेष्ठानि यानि द्विपदां वरिष्ठ; यज्ञेषु विद्वन्नुपपादयन्ति। तैरेवाहं सम्प्रवृद्धा भवामि; आप्यायिता रूपवती च विप्र ॥०३-१८४-१९॥
śreṣṭhāni yāni dvipadāṃ variṣṭha; yajñeṣu vidvan-upapādayanti. tair-evāhaṃ sampravṛddhā bhavāmi; āpyāyitā rūpavatī ca vipra ॥03-184-19॥
[श्रेष्ठानि (śreṣṭhāni) - best; यानि (yāni) - which; द्विपदां (dvipadām) - of bipeds; वरिष्ठ (variṣṭha) - O eminent; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O learned one; उपपादयन्ति (upapādayanti) - cause to be offered; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; एव (eva) - only; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सम्प्रवृद्धा (sampravṛddhā) - well grown; भवामि (bhavāmi) - become; आप्यायिता (āpyāyitā) - nourished; रूपवती (rūpavatī) - beautiful; च (ca) - and; विप्र (vipra) - O brahmin;]
(Best which of bipeds, O eminent one, in sacrifices, O learned one, cause to be offered. With those only I well grown become; nourished, beautiful, and, O brahmin.)
O eminent one among bipeds, O learned brahmin, whatever the best offerings in sacrifices are made, it is by those alone that I become well grown, nourished, and beautiful. (03-184-19)
यच्चापि द्रव्यमुपयुज्यते ह; वानस्पत्यमायसं पार्थिवं वा। दिव्येन रूपेण च प्रज्ञया च; तेनैव सिद्धिरिति विद्धि विद्वन् ॥०३-१८४-२०॥
yaccāpi dravyam upayujyate ha; vānaspatyam āyasaṃ pārthivaṃ vā. divyena rūpeṇa ca prajñayā ca; tenaiva siddhir iti viddhi vidvan ॥03-184-20॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; द्रव्यम् (dravyam) - substance; उपयुज्यते (upayujyate) - is utilized; ह (ha) - indeed; वानस्पत्यम् (vānaspatyam) - vegetable [substance]; आयसं (āyasaṃ) - metallic; पार्थिवम् (pārthivaṃ) - earthly; वा (vā) - or; दिव्येन (divyena) - by divine; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - form; च (ca) - and; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - by wisdom; च (ca) - and; तेन एव (tenaiva) - by that alone; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - attainment; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O wise one;]
(And which substance indeed is utilized, whether vegetable, metallic, or earthly, or by divine form and by wisdom also; by that alone is attainment, thus know, O wise one.)
O wise one, know that whichever substance is utilized—be it vegetable, metallic, or earthly—or through divine form and wisdom; by that alone is achievement. (03-184-20)
तार्क्ष्य उवाच॥

idaṁ śreyaḥ paramaṁ manyamānā; vyāyacchante munayaḥ sampratītāḥ. ācakṣva me taṁ paramaṁ viśokaṁ; mokṣaṁ paraṁ yaṁ praviśanti dhīrāḥ ॥03-184-21॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - highest good; परमं (paramaṁ) - supreme; मन्यमाना (manyamānā) - thinking; व्यायच्छन्ते (vyāyacchante) - they exert; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; सम्प्रतीताः (sampratītāḥ) - confident; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to me; तं (taṁ) - that; परमं (paramaṁ) - supreme; विशोकं (viśokaṁ) - free from sorrow; मोक्षं (mokṣaṁ) - liberation; परं (paraṁ) - supreme; यं (yaṁ) - which; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; धीराः (dhīrāḥ) - the steadfast ones;]
(This highest good, the supreme, thinking (it to be), the sages, confident, exert. Tell to me that supreme, sorrowless, liberation, the supreme, which the steadfast ones enter.)
The sages, regarding this as the highest and supreme good, strive for it with confidence. Tell me of that supreme, sorrowless liberation, the supreme state which the steadfast enter. (03-184-21)

taṃ vai paraṃ vedavidaḥ prapannāḥ; paraṃ parebhyaḥ prathitaṃ purāṇam। svādhyāyadānavratapuṇyayogaiḥ; tapodhanā vītaśokā vimuktāḥ॥03-184-22॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; that; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; highest; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; प्रपन्नाः (prapannāḥ) - those who have taken refuge in; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; highest; परेभ्यः (parebhyaḥ) - from others; than others; प्रथितं (prathitaṃ) - well-known; famed; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient; old; स्वाध्याय (svādhyāya) - self-study; recitation; दान (dāna) - charity; gift; व्रत (vrata) - vow; observance; पुण्य (puṇya) - merit; virtue; योगैः (yogaiḥ) - by means of conjunctions; by practices; तपोधना (tapodhanāḥ) - whose wealth is austerity; वीतशोका (vītaśokāḥ) - free from sorrow; विमुक्ताः (vimuktāḥ) - liberated; freed;]
(Him indeed as supreme, knowers of the Veda, having taken refuge, (declare as) supreme, as (the one) distinct from others, renowned, ancient. Through practices of self-study, charity, vow, merit; those whose wealth is austerity, free from sorrow, liberated.)
Indeed, the knowers of the Veda who have taken refuge in that supreme (being), that being renowned as the greatest among all, the ancient one distinct from others, by the virtues of self-study, charity, vows, and meritorious practices, those whose riches are austerity, who are free from sorrow, become liberated. (03-184-22)
तस्याथ मध्ये वेतसः पुण्यगन्धः; सहस्रशाखो विमलो विभाति। तस्य मूलात्सरितः प्रस्रवन्ति; मधूदकप्रस्रवणा रमण्यः ॥०३-१८४-२३॥
tasyātha madhye vetasaḥ puṇyagandhaḥ; sahasraśākho vimalo vibhāti. tasya mūlātsaritaḥ prasravanti; madhūdakaprasravaṇā ramaṇyaḥ ॥03-184-23॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of it; अथ (atha) - then; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; वेतसः (vetasaḥ) - of the bamboo; पुण्यगन्धः (puṇyagandhaḥ) - fragrant; सहस्रशाखः (sahasraśākhaḥ) - thousand-branched; विमलः (vimalaḥ) - pure; विभाति (vibhāti) - shines; तस्य (tasya) - from its; मूलात् (mūlāt) - root; सरितः (saritaḥ) - streams; प्रस्रवन्ति (prasravanti) - flow forth; मधूदकप्रस्रवणाः (madhūdakaprasravaṇāḥ) - having outflows of honey-water; रमण्यः (ramaṇyaḥ) - beautiful;]
(Of it then in the midst, of the bamboo fragrant, thousand-branched pure shines. From its root, streams flow forth, having outflows of honey-water, beautiful.)
Then, in its midst, the fragrant thousand-branched pure bamboo shines. From its root, beautiful streams with honey-water outflows emerge. (03-184-23)
शाखां शाखां महानद्यः संयान्ति सिकतासमाः। धानापूपा मांसशाकाः सदा पायसकर्दमाः ॥०३-१८४-२४॥
śākhāṃ śākhāṃ mahānadyaḥ saṃyānti sikatāsamāḥ। dhānāpūpā māṃśaśākāḥ sadā pāyasakardamāḥ॥03-184-24॥
[शाखां (śākhām) - branch; शाखां (śākhām) - branch; महानद्यः (mahānadyaḥ) - great rivers; संयान्ति (saṃyānti) - flow together; सिकतासमाः (sikatāsamāḥ) - resembling sand; धानापूपाः (dhānāpūpāḥ) - rice-cakes; मांसशाकाः (māṃśaśākāḥ) - meats and vegetables; सदा (sadā) - always; पायसकर्दमाः (pāyasakardamāḥ) - mud of milk-rice;]
(Branch by branch, great rivers resembling sand, flow together. Rice-cakes, meats and vegetables are always mud of milk-rice.)
In every branch, great rivers resembling sand converge; rice-cakes, meats, and vegetables are always a mass of milk-rice mud. (03-184-24)
यस्मिन्नग्निमुखा देवाः सेन्द्राः सह मरुद्गणैः। ईजिरे क्रतुभिः श्रेष्ठैस्तत्पदं परमं मुने ॥०३-१८४-२५॥
yasminn agnimukhā devāḥ sendrāḥ saha marud-gaṇaiḥ। ījire kratubhiḥ śreṣṭhaiḥ tat padaṃ paramaṃ mune ॥03-184-25॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; अग्निमुखाः (agnimukhāḥ) - with Agni at the forefront; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - with Indra; सह (saha) - together with; मरुत्-गणैः (marud-gaṇaiḥ) - with the groups of Maruts; ईजिरे (ījire) - worshipped; क्रतुभिः (kratubhiḥ) - by rituals; श्रेष्ठैः (śreṣṭhaiḥ) - excellent; तत् (tat) - that; पदं (padaṃ) - state (abode); परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(In which, with Agni at the forefront, the gods with Indra, together with the groups of Maruts, worshipped by excellent rituals, that supreme state, O sage.)
O sage, that supreme state, in which the gods, with Agni at the forefront, Indra, and the companies of Maruts, worshipped by excellent sacrifices.
