vivasvataḥ suto rājan paramarṣiḥ pratāpavān। babhūva naraśārdūla prajāpatisamadyutiḥ ॥03-185-2॥

O king, the son of Vivasvat, who was a supreme seer and possessed of great splendor, became (among men) a tiger, equal in brilliance to Prajāpati. (03-185-2)
ओजसा तेजसा लक्ष्म्या तपसा च विशेषतः। अतिचक्राम पितरं मनुः स्वं च पितामहम् ॥०३-१८५-३॥
ojasā tejasā lakṣmyā tapasā ca viśeṣataḥ. aticakrāma pitaraṃ manuḥ svaṃ ca pitāmaham ॥03-185-3॥

ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्विशालायां बदर्यां स नराधिपः। एकपादस्थितस्तीव्रं चचार सुमहत्तपः ॥०३-१८५-४॥

(With arms raised, in Viśālā in Badarī, he, the king, standing on one leg, practiced intense, very great austerity.)
In Viśālā at Badarī, the king practiced very great and intense austerity, standing on one leg with arms raised. (03-185-4)
अवाक्षिरास्तथा चापि नेत्रैरनिमिषैर्दृढम्। सोऽतप्यत तपो घोरं वर्षाणामयुतं तदा ॥०३-१८५-५॥
avākśirās tathā cāpi netrair animiṣair dṛḍham। so'tapyata tapo ghoram varṣāṇām ayutam tadā॥03-185-5॥
[अवाक्-शिराः (avāk-śirāḥ) - with head bent downward; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नेत्रैः (netraiḥ) - with eyes; अनिमिषैः (animiṣaiḥ) - unblinking; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - steadfastly; सः (saḥ) - he; अतप्यत (atapyata) - practiced austerity; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; घोरम् (ghoram) - intense; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - of years; अयुतम् (ayutam) - ten thousand; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(With head bent downward thus and also with unblinking eyes, steadfastly he practiced intense penance of years ten thousand then.)
With his head bent down and with unblinking eyes, he steadily performed fierce penance for ten thousand years at that time. (03-185-5)
तं कदाचित्तपस्यन्तमार्द्रचीरजटाधरम्। वीरिणीतीरमागम्य मत्स्यो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१८५-६॥
taṁ kadācittapasyantam ārdracīra-jaṭā-dharam। vīriṇī-tīram āgamya matsyo vacanam abravīt ॥03-185-6॥

(Him at some time performing austerities, wearing wet garments and matted hair, to the bank of the Virini having come, the fish words spoke.)
At a certain time, as he was performing austerities wearing wet garments and matted hair, having come to the bank of the Virini, the fish spoke these words to him. (03-185-6)
भगवन्क्षुद्रमत्स्योऽस्मि बलवद्भ्यो भयं मम। मत्स्येभ्यो हि ततो मां त्वं त्रातुमर्हसि सुव्रत ॥०३-१८५-७॥
bhagavan-kṣudramatsyo'smi balavadbhyo bhayaṃ mama। matsyebhyo hi tato māṃ tvaṃ trātum arhasi suvrata ॥03-185-7॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O blessed one; क्षुद्रमत्स्यः (kṣudra-matsyaḥ) - small fish; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; बलवद्भ्यः (balavadbhyaḥ) - from the strong; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; मम (mama) - my; मत्स्येभ्यः (matsyebhyaḥ) - from other fishes; हि (hi) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O virtuous one;]
(O blessed one, small fish I am; from the strong, fear is mine. From fishes, indeed, therefore me you ought to protect, O virtuous one.)
O blessed one, I am a small fish; I have fear of the strong. Therefore, O virtuous one, you ought to protect me from the other fishes. (03-185-7)
दुर्बलं बलवन्तो हि मत्स्यं मत्स्या विशेषतः। भक्षयन्ति यथा वृत्तिर्विहिता नः सनातनी ॥०३-१८५-८॥
durbalaṁ balavanto hi matsyaṁ matsyā viśeṣataḥ। bhakṣayanti yathā vṛttir vihitā naḥ sanātanī ॥03-185-8॥
[दुर्बलं (durbalaṁ) - the weak; बलवन्तः (balavantaḥ) - the strong; हि (hi) - indeed; मत्स्यं (matsyam) - fish (object); मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes (subject); विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; भक्षयन्ति (bhakṣayanti) - devour; यथा (yathā) - as; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - mode of life; विहिता (vihitā) - established; नः (naḥ) - for us; सनातनी (sanātanī) - eternal;]
(The strong indeed especially fishes devour the weak fish as the eternal mode of life is established for us.)
The strong fish indeed devour the weak fish in particular, as this is the eternal mode of life established for us. (3-185-8)
तस्माद्भयौघान्महतो मज्जन्तं मां विशेषतः। त्रातुमर्हसि कर्तास्मि कृते प्रतिकृतं तव ॥०३-१८५-९॥
tasmādbhaya-oughān-mahato majjantaṃ māṃ viśeṣataḥ । trātum arhasi kartāsmi kṛte pratikṛtaṃ tava ॥03-185-9॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भयौघात् (bhaya-oughāt) - from the great flood of fear; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; मज्जन्तम् (majjantam) - sinking; माम् (mām) - me; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to save; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; कर्तास्मि (kartāsmi) - I am (the) doer; कृते (kṛte) - for (your) act; प्रतिकृतम् (pratikṛtam) - the reciprocal deed; तव (tava) - to you;]
(Therefore, from the flood of great fear especially sinking me, to save you ought; I am the doer for the act reciprocated to you.)
Therefore, as I am especially sinking in the great flood of fear, you ought to save me; I am acting in return for your favor to me. (03-185-9)
स मत्स्यवचनं श्रुत्वा कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः। मनुर्वैवस्वतोऽगृह्णात्तं मत्स्यं पाणिना स्वयम् ॥०३-१८५-१०॥
sa matsyavacanaṃ śrutvā kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ। manurvaivasvato'gṛhṇāttaṃ matsyaṃ pāṇinā svayam ॥03-185-10॥
[स (sa) - he; मत्स्यवचनम् (matsyavacanam) - the fish's words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कृपया (kṛpayā) - with compassion; अभिपरिप्लुतः (abhipariplutaḥ) - filled thoroughly; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - son of Vivasvat; अगृह्णात् (agṛhṇāt) - took (held); तम् (tam) - him; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - fish; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (his) hand; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(He, having heard the fish's words, filled thoroughly with compassion, Manu, son of Vivasvat, took that fish himself with (his) hand.)
Hearing the fish's words, Manu, son of Vivasvat, was filled with compassion and himself took the fish in his hand. (03-185-10)
उदकान्तमुपानीय मत्स्यं वैवस्वतो मनुः। अलिञ्जरे प्राक्षिपत्स चन्द्रांशुसदृशप्रभम् ॥०३-१८५-११॥
udakāntam-upānīya matsyaṁ vaivasvato manuḥ। aliñjare prākṣipatsa candrāṁśu-sadṛśa-prabham ॥03-185-11॥
[उदकान्तम् (udakāntam) - to the edge of the water; उपानीय (upānīya) - having brought; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - the fish; वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - Vaivasvata; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; अलिञ्जरे (aliñjare) - in Aliñjara (a mountain/region); प्राक्षिपत् (prākṣipat) - he cast (set down/placed); सः (saḥ) - he; चन्द्रांशु-सदृश-प्रभम् (candrāṁśu-sadṛśa-prabham) - having a splendor like the moon's rays;]
(Having brought the fish to the edge of the water, Vaivasvata Manu, in Aliñjara, he cast it, having a radiance like the moon's rays.)
Vaivasvata Manu brought the fish to the edge of the water and, in Aliñjara, placed it there; it shone with a radiance like the rays of the moon. (03-185-11)
स तत्र ववृधे राजन्मत्स्यः परमसत्कृतः। पुत्रवच्चाकरोत्तस्मिन्मनुर्भावं विशेषतः ॥०३-१८५-१२॥
sa tatra vavṛdhe rājan matsyaḥ paramasatkṛtaḥ। putravaccākarottasmin manur bhāvaṃ viśeṣataḥ ॥03-185-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; राजन् (rājan) - O King; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; परमसत्कृतः (paramasatkṛtaḥ) - most highly honored; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like a son; च (ca) - and; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - to him; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; भावम् (bhāvam) - feeling; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(He there grew, O King, the fish, most highly honored; and like a son, Manu did to him feeling especially.)
There the fish, being most highly honored, grew, O King; and Manu especially showed him the affection one has for a son. (03-185-12)
अथ कालेन महता स मत्स्यः सुमहानभूत्। अलिञ्जरे जले चैव नासौ समभवत्किल ॥०३-१८५-१३॥
atha kālena mahatā sa matsyaḥ sumahānabhūt। aliñjare jale caiva nāsau samabhavatkila॥03-185-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कालेन (kālena) - by time; महता (mahatā) - great; स (sa) - he; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; अलिञ्जरे (aliñjare) - in the Aliñjara; जले (jale) - water; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - he; समभवत् (samabhavat) - remained; किल (kila) - indeed;]
(Then, by great time, that fish became very great. In the Aliñjara water indeed, he no longer remained, indeed.)
Then, after much time had passed, that fish became very great. He could no longer remain in the waters of the Aliñjara, it is said. (03-185-13)
अथ मत्स्यो मनुं दृष्ट्वा पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत। भगवन्साधु मेऽद्यान्यत्स्थानं सम्प्रतिपादय ॥०३-१८५-१४॥
atha matsyo manuṁ dṛṣṭvā punarevābhyabhāṣata। bhagavansādhu me'dyānyatsthānaṁ sampratipādaya ॥03-185-14॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; मनुम् (manum) - Manu; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; साधु (sādhu) - well (please); मे (me) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; सम्प्रतिपादय (sampratipādaya) - grant;]
(Then the fish, having seen Manu, again indeed addressed (him): "O venerable one, well, today grant me another place." (03-185-14))
Then, having seen Manu, the fish again addressed him: "O venerable one, kindly grant me another place today." (03-185-14)
उद्धृत्यालिञ्जरात्तस्मात्ततः स भगवान्मुनिः। तं मत्स्यमनयद्वापीं महतीं स मनुस्तदा ॥०३-१८५-१५॥
uddhṛtyāliñjarāt tasmāt tataḥ sa bhagavān muniḥ। taṃ matsyam anayad vāpīṃ mahatīṃ sa manuḥ tadā॥03-185-15॥
[उद्धृत्य (uddhṛtya) - having lifted; आलिञ्जरात् (āliñjarāt) - from Āliñjara (mountain); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that (place); ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तं (tam) - that; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - fish; अनयत् (anayat) - led; वापीं (vāpīṃ) - to a pond; महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; स (sa) - he; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having lifted from Āliñjara, from that (place), then the venerable sage, that fish, led to a pond great, he, Manu, then.)
Then Manu, having lifted the fish from Āliñjara, at that time, led the great fish to a large pond. (03-185-15)
तत्र तं प्राक्षिपच्चापि मनुः परपुरञ्जय। अथावर्धत मत्स्यः स पुनर्वर्षगणान्बहून् ॥०३-१८५-१६॥
tatra taṃ prākṣipaccāpi manuḥ parapurañjaya। athāvardhata matsyaḥ sa punarvarṣagaṇānbahūn ॥03-185-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; तं (taṃ) - him; प्राक्षिपत् (prākṣipat) - threw; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; परपुरञ्जय (parapurañjaya) - conqueror of enemy cities; अथ (atha) - then; अवर्धत (avardhata) - grew; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; स (sa) - he; पुनः (punar) - again; वर्षगणान् (varṣagaṇān) - collections of years; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(There him threw and also Manu, conqueror of enemy cities. Then grew fish he again (for) many collections of years.)
There, Manu, the conqueror of enemy cities, also threw him in. Then that fish grew again for many years. (03-185-16)
द्वियोजनायता वापी विस्तृता चापि योजनम्। तस्यां नासौ समभवन्मत्स्यो राजीवलोचन ॥ विचेष्टितुं वा कौन्तेय मत्स्यो वाप्यां विशां पते ॥०३-१८५-१७॥
dviyojanāyatā vāpī vistṛtā cāpi yojanam। tasyāṃ nāsau samabhavanmatsyo rājīvalocana ॥ vicēṣṭituṃ vā kauntēya matsyo vāpyāṃ viśāṃ patē ॥03-185-17॥
[द्वियोजनायता (dviyojanāyatā) - extending two yojanas; वापी (vāpī) - tank; pond; विस्तृता (vistṛtā) - spread; expanded; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; योजनम् (yojanam) - one yojana; तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in that (pond); न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - that; समभवन् (samabhavan) - was present together; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; राजीवलोचन (rājīvalocana) - lotus-eyed; विचेष्टितुं (vicēṣṭituṃ) - to move; to act; वा (vā) - or; कौन्तेय (kauntēya) - O son of Kunti; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; वाप्यां (vāpyāṃ) - in the pond; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men;]
(Tank extending two yojanas, and also spread one yojana. In that, not that fish, O lotus-eyed, was present together. To move or, O Kaunteya, fish in the pond, O lord of men.)
There was a tank two yojanas long and one yojana wide. O lotus-eyed one, in that pond, that fish was not present together (with others). O son of Kunti, O lord of men, the fish in that pond could not even move about. (3-185-17)
मनुं मत्स्यस्ततो दृष्ट्वा पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत। नय मां भगवन्साधो समुद्रमहिषीं प्रभो ॥ गङ्गां तत्र निवत्स्यामि यथा वा तात मन्यसे ॥०३-१८५-१८॥
manuṃ matsyas-tato dṛṣṭvā punar-evābhyabhāṣata। naya māṃ bhagavan-sādho samudra-mahiṣīṃ prabho ॥ gaṅgāṃ tatra nivatsyāmi yathā vā tāta manyase ॥03-185-18॥
[मनुं (manum) - Manu (accusative singular); मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish (nominative singular); ततः (tataḥ) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; नय (naya) - lead; माम् (mām) - me; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; साधो (sādho) - O virtuous one; समुद्र (samudra) - ocean; महिषीं (mahiṣīm) - queen; great river (here, in context of Gaṅgā as ocean queen); प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Gaṅgā (the river); तत्र (tatra) - there; निवत्स्यामि (nivatsyāmi) - I will stay; यथा (yathā) - as; वा (vā) - or; तात (tāta) - O dear one; मस्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(Having seen Manu then, the fish again indeed addressed (him): Lead me, O venerable, O virtuous one, to the queen of oceans, O lord. There, in the Gaṅgā, I will stay, or as you think, O dear one.)
The fish, having seen Manu, again addressed him: "O venerable, O virtuous one, lead me to the queen of oceans, O lord. I will stay there in the Gaṅgā, or wherever else you think best, O dear one." (03-185-18)
एवमुक्तो मनुर्मत्स्यमनयद्भगवान्वशी। नदीं गङ्गां तत्र चैनं स्वयं प्राक्षिपदच्युतः ॥०३-१८५-१९॥
evam-ukto manur matsyam anayad bhagavān vaśī। nadīṁ gaṅgāṁ tatra ca enaṁ svayaṁ prākṣipad acyutaḥ॥03-185-19॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - the fish; अनयत् (anayat) - led; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; वशी (vaśī) - the master; नदीम् (nadīm) - river; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; प्राक्षिपत् (prākṣipat) - threw; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta;]
(Thus addressed, Manu led the fish—the venerable master—to the river Ganga; there, and him himself, Acyuta threw.)
Thus addressed, Manu—being the master and venerable one—led the fish to the river Ganga, and there, Acyuta himself threw him in. (03-185-19)
स तत्र ववृधे मत्स्यः किञ्चित्कालमरिंदम। ततः पुनर्मनुं दृष्ट्वा मत्स्यो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१८५-२०॥
sa tatra vavṛdhe matsyaḥ kiñcit-kālam ariṃdama. tataḥ punar manuṃ dṛṣṭvā matsyaḥ vacanam abravīt ॥03-185-20॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; किञ्चित्कालम् (kiñcit-kālam) - for a certain time; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मनुम् (manum) - Manu; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(He there grew, the fish, for a certain time, O subduer of enemies. Then again, having seen Manu, the fish spoke (this) speech.)
The fish grew there for some time, O subduer of enemies. Then, having seen Manu again, the fish spoke these words. (03-185-20)
गङ्गायां हि न शक्नोमि बृहत्त्वाच्चेष्टितुं प्रभो। समुद्रं नय मामाशु प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥०३-१८५-२१॥
gaṅgāyāṃ hi na śaknomi bṛhattvāc ceṣṭituṃ prabho। samudraṃ naya mām āśu prasīda bhagavan iti ॥03-185-21॥
[गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Ganges; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - am able; बृहत्त्वात् (bṛhattvāt) - due to vastness; चेष्टितुं (ceṣṭitum) - to move; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; समुद्रं (samudram) - to the ocean; नय (naya) - lead; माम् (mām) - me; आशु (āśu) - quickly; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O blessed one; इति (iti) - thus;]
(In the Ganges indeed not am I able due to vastness to move, O lord. To the ocean lead me quickly, be gracious, O blessed one, thus.)
O lord, I am not able to move in the Ganges due to its vastness. Please lead me quickly to the ocean and be gracious, O blessed one. (03-185-21)
उद्धृत्य गङ्गासलिलात्ततो मत्स्यं मनुः स्वयम्। समुद्रमनयत्पार्थ तत्र चैनमवासृजत् ॥०३-१८५-२२॥
uddhṛtya gaṅgā-salilāt tato matsyaṃ manuḥ svayam। samudram anayat pārtha tatra ca enam avāsṛjat ॥03-185-22॥
[उद्धृत्य (uddhṛtya) - having lifted up; गङ्गासलिलात् (gaṅgā-salilāt) - from the water of the Gaṅgā; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मत्स्यं (matsyam) - the fish; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; समुद्रम् (samudram) - to the ocean; अनयत् (anayat) - led; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अवासृजत् (avāsṛjat) - released;]
(Having lifted up (him) from the water of the Gaṅgā, then the fish, Manu himself to the ocean led, O Pārtha, there and him released.)
Manu himself then lifted the fish from the water of the Gaṅgā and brought it to the ocean, O Pārtha, and there released it. (03-185-22)
सुमहानपि मत्स्यः सन्स मनोर्मनसस्तदा। आसीद्यथेष्टहार्यश्च स्पर्शगन्धसुखश्च वै ॥०३-१८५-२३॥
sumahān api matsyaḥ san manor manasas tadā। āsīd yatheṣṭahāryaś ca sparśagandhasukhaś ca vai ॥03-185-23॥
[सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अपि (api) - even; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - fish; सन् (san) - being; मनोः (manoḥ) - of Manu; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of (his) mind; तदा (tadā) - at that time; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; यथेष्टहार्यः (yatheṣṭahāryaḥ) - as desired, easy to handle; च (ca) - and; स्पर्शगन्धसुखः (sparśagandhasukhaḥ) - pleasant to touch and smell; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Very great even fish being, of Manu's mind at that time, was as desired easy to handle and pleasant to touch and smell and indeed.)
Even though the fish was very large, at that time he was pleasing to Manu's mind, easily handled as desired, and indeed pleasant to the touch and smell. (03-185-23)
यदा समुद्रे प्रक्षिप्तः स मत्स्यो मनुना तदा। तत एनमिदं वाक्यं स्मयमान इवाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१८५-२४॥
yadā samudre prakṣiptaḥ sa matsyo manunā tadā। tata enam idaṃ vākyaṃ smayamāna iva abravīt ॥03-185-24॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; समुद्रे (samudre) - in the ocean; प्रक्षिप्तः (prakṣiptaḥ) - having been cast; स (sa) - he; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; मनुना (manunā) - by Manu; तदा (tadā) - then; तत् (tat) - then; एनम् (enam) - to him; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; स्मयमान (smayamāna) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(When in the ocean cast he fish by Manu then, then to him this speech smiling as if said.)
When the fish was cast into the ocean by Manu, then, as if smiling, he spoke these words to him. (03-185-24)
भगवन्कृता हि मे रक्षा त्वया सर्वा विशेषतः। प्राप्तकालं तु यत्कार्यं त्वया तच्छ्रूयतां मम ॥०३-१८५-२५॥
bhagavan-kṛtā hi me rakṣā tvayā sarvā viśeṣataḥ। prāpta-kālaṃ tu yat kāryaṃ tvayā tat śrūyatāṃ mama ॥03-185-25॥
[भगवन्कृता (bhagavan-kṛtā) - made by (the) revered one; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - for me; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; प्राप्तकालं (prāpta-kālam) - that which is timely; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तत् (tat) - that; शृूयतां (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; मम (mama) - by me;]
(Indeed, all protection for me made by the revered one by you especially; but that which is timely action by you, that let it be heard by me.)
Indeed, all the protection you have made for me, O revered one, is especially complete; but now, hear from me what action is timely for you to perform. (03-185-25)
अचिराद्भगवन्भौममिदं स्थावरजङ्गमम्। सर्वमेव महाभाग प्रलयं वै गमिष्यति ॥०३-१८५-२६॥
acirādbhagavanbhaumamidaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam। sarvameva mahābhāga pralayaṁ vai gamiṣyati ॥03-185-26॥
[अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; भौमम् (bhaumam) - on earth; इदम् (idam) - this; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvarajaṅgamam) - immobile and mobile; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; प्रलयम् (pralayam) - dissolution; वै (vai) - indeed; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will go;]
(Soon, O revered one, this (all) immobile and mobile (beings) on earth, indeed, O greatly fortunate one, all will go to dissolution indeed.)
O revered one, soon this whole world of immobile and mobile beings on earth, O greatly fortunate one, will surely go to dissolution. (03-185-26)
सम्प्रक्षालनकालोऽयं लोकानां समुपस्थितः। तस्मात्त्वां बोधयाम्यद्य यत्ते हितमनुत्तमम् ॥०३-१८५-२७॥
samprakṣālanakālo'yaṁ lokānāṁ samupasthitaḥ। tasmāttvāṁ bodhayāmyadya yatte hitamanuttamam ॥03-185-27॥
[सम्प्रक्षालनकालः (samprakṣālanakālaḥ) - time of complete cleansing; अयम् (ayam) - this; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds (people); समुपस्थितः (samupasthitaḥ) - has arrived; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; बोधयामि (bodhayāmi) - I inform; अद्य (adya) - today; यत् (yat) - that which; ते (te) - to you; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - supreme;]
(The time of complete cleansing, this for the worlds has arrived; therefore, you I inform today that which to you is the beneficial supreme.)
The time for the complete cleansing of the worlds has arrived; therefore, today I am informing you of that which is supremely beneficial to you. (03-185-27)
त्रसानां स्थावराणां च यच्चेङ्गं यच्च नेङ्गति। तस्य सर्वस्य सम्प्राप्तः कालः परमदारुणः ॥०३-१८५-२८॥
trasānāṃ sthāvarāṇāṃ ca yacc eṅgaṃ yacc neṅgati। tasya sarvasya samprāptaḥ kālaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ॥03-185-28॥
[त्रसानां (trasānāṃ) - of the moving (beings); स्थावराणां (sthāvarāṇāṃ) - of the non-moving (beings); च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; एङ्गम् (eṅgam) - moves; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; न (na) - does not; एङ्गति (eṅgati) - move; तस्य (tasya) - of that; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - has arrived; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; परमदारुणः (paramadāruṇaḥ) - extremely terrible;]
(Of the moving beings and of the unmoving beings, which moves and which does not move, for all of that, the time extremely terrible has arrived.)
For all moving and unmoving beings, whether they move or do not move, the most dreadful time has come. (03-185-28)
नौश्च कारयितव्या ते दृढा युक्तवटाकरा। तत्र सप्तर्षिभिः सार्धमारुहेथा महामुने ॥०३-१८५-२९॥
nauś ca kārayitavyā te dṛḍhā yuktavaṭākarā. tatra saptarṣibhiḥ sārdham āruhethā mahāmune ॥03-185-29॥
[नौः (nauḥ) - ship; च (ca) - and; कारयितव्या (kārayitavyā) - should be made; ते (te) - by you; दृढा (dṛḍhā) - firm; युक्तवटाकरा (yuktavaṭākarā) - provided with strong framework; तत्र (tatra) - there; सप्तर्षिभिः (saptarṣibhiḥ) - with the seven sages; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; आरुहेथा (āruhethā) - should ascend; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(And a ship should be made by you, firm, provided with a strong framework. There, with the seven sages together, O great sage, you should ascend.)
O great sage, you should have a firm ship made, equipped with a strong framework. Together with the seven sages, you should board it there. (03-185-29)
बीजानि चैव सर्वाणि यथोक्तानि मया पुरा। तस्यामारोहयेर्नावि सुसङ्गुप्तानि भागशः ॥०३-१८५-३०॥
bījāni caiva sarvāṇi yathok tāni mayā purā । tasyām ārohayet nāvi susaṅguptāni bhāgaśaḥ ॥03-185-30॥
[बीजानि (bījāni) - seeds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; यथोक्तानि (yathok tāni) - as spoken; मया (mayā) - by me; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that (boat); आरोहयेत् (ārohayet) - should cause to be mounted; नावि (nāvi) - on the boat; सुसङ्गुप्तानि (susaṅguptāni) - well-protected; भागशः (bhāgaśaḥ) - in portions;]
(Seeds and indeed all, as spoken by me formerly, in that (boat), should cause to be mounted on the boat, well-protected, in portions.)
He should place all the seeds, as previously described by me, on that boat in a well-protected manner and in portions. (03-185-30)
नौस्थश्च मां प्रतीक्षेथास्तदा मुनिजनप्रिय। आगमिष्याम्यहं शृङ्गी विज्ञेयस्तेन तापस ॥०३-१८५-३१॥
nausthaś ca māṃ pratīkṣethāḥ tadā munijanapriya। āgamiṣyāmi ahaṃ śṛṅgī vijñeyas tena tāpasa ॥03-185-31॥
[नौस्थः (nausthaḥ) - standing on the boat; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; प्रतीक्षेथाः (pratīkṣethāḥ) - you should wait; तदा (tadā) - then; मुनिजनप्रिय (munijanapriya) - O dear to sages; आगमिष्यामि (āgamiṣyāmi) - I shall come; अहम् (aham) - I; शृङ्गी (śṛṅgī) - Śṛṅgī [name]; विज्ञेयः (vijñeyaḥ) - should be known; तेन (tena) - by him; तापसः (tāpasaḥ) - ascetic;]
(Standing on the boat and me you should wait then, O dear to sages. I shall come, I Śṛṅgī, should be known by that ascetic.)
O beloved of sages, stand on the boat and wait for me then. I, Śṛṅgī, the ascetic whom you should recognize, will come. (03-185-31)
एवमेतत्त्वया कार्यमापृष्टोऽसि व्रजाम्यहम्। नातिशङ्क्यमिदं चापि वचनं ते ममाभिभो ॥०३-१८५-३२॥
evam etat tvayā kāryam āpṛṣṭo'si vrajāmy aham। nātiśaṅkyam idaṁ cāpi vacanaṁ te mamābhibho ॥03-185-32॥
[एवम् (evam) (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; त्वया (tvayā) (tvayā) - by you; कार्यम् (kāryam) (kāryam) - to be done; आपृष्टः (āpṛṣṭaḥ) (āpṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; असि (asi) (asi) - you are; व्रजामि (vrajāmi) (vrajāmi) - I go; अहम् (aham) (aham) - I; न (na) (na) - not; अतिशङ्क्यम् (atiśaṅkyam) (atiśaṅkyam) - to be greatly doubted; इदं (idaṁ) (idaṁ) - this; च (ca) (ca) - and; अपि (api) (api) - also; वचनम् (vacanam) (vacanam) - word; ते (te) (te) - your; मम (mama) (mama) - my; अभिभो (abhibho) (abhibho) - O master;]
(Thus, this by you to be done, asked you are; I go. Not to be greatly doubted this also word your my O master.)
Thus, this task which you asked me to do, I am going. Also, O master, there is nothing to be greatly suspicious about in this word of yours and mine. (03-185-32)
एवं करिष्य इति तं स मत्स्यं प्रत्यभाषत। जग्मतुश्च यथाकाममनुज्ञाप्य परस्परम् ॥०३-१८५-३३॥
evaṃ kariṣya iti taṃ sa matsyaṃ pratyabhāṣata। jagmatuś ca yathākāmam anujñāpya parasparam ॥03-185-33॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; करिष्य (kariṣya) - I will do; इति (iti) - so; तं (taṃ) - to him; स (sa) - he; मत्स्यं (matsyaṃ) - fish; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; जग्मतुश् (jagmatuś) - the two went; च (ca) - and; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as they wished; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having permitted; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other;]
(Thus, I will do—so to him he the fish addressed. The two went and as they wished, having permitted each other.)
He addressed the fish, saying, "Thus I will do." Then both, having granted each other permission, departed as they wished. (03-185-33)
ततो मनुर्महाराज यथोक्तं मत्स्यकेन ह। बीजान्यादाय सर्वाणि सागरं पुप्लुवे तदा ॥ नावा तु शुभया वीर महोर्मिणमरिंदम ॥०३-१८५-३४॥
tato manurmahārāja yathoktaṁ matsyakenaha। bījānyādāya sarvāṇi sāgaraṁ pupluve tadā ॥ nāvā tu śubhayā vīra mahormiṇamarindama ॥03-185-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as said; मत्स्यकेन (matsyakena) - by the fish; ह (ha) - indeed; बीजानि (bījāni) - seeds; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; सागरं (sāgaraṁ) - the ocean; पुप्लुवे (pupluve) - floated; तदा (tadā) - then; नावा (nāvā) - with the boat; तु (tu) - but; शुभया (śubhayā) - auspicious; वीर (vīra) - hero; महोर्मिणा (mahōrmiṇā) - by the great wave; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(Then Manu, the great king, as said by the fish indeed, having taken all the seeds, floated on the ocean then. With the auspicious boat but, O hero, by the great wave, O subduer of enemies.)
Then Manu, O subduer of enemies, as instructed by the fish, took all the seeds and floated on the ocean with the auspicious boat, O hero, by the force of the great waves. (03-185-34)
चिन्तयामास च मनुस्तं मत्स्यं पृथिवीपते। स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा मत्स्यः परपुरञ्जय ॥ शृङ्गी तत्राजगामाशु तदा भरतसत्तम ॥०३-१८५-३५॥
cintayāmāsa ca manustaṃ matsyaṃ pṛthivīpate| sa ca taccintitaṃ jñātvā matsyaḥ parapurañjaya|| śṛṅgī tatrājagāmāśu tadā bharatasattama||03-185-35||
[चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he thought; (he) reflected; च (ca) - and; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; तं (taṃ) - him; that (one); मत्स्यं (matsyaṃ) - the fish; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O king of the earth; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तच्चिन्तितं (taccintitaṃ) - that which was thought; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; परपुरञ्जय (parapurañjaya) - O conqueror of enemy cities; शृङ्गी (śṛṅgī) - Śṛṅgī (the horned one); तत्र (tatra) - there; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; आशु (āśu) - quickly; तदा (tadā) - then; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(And Manu thought upon that fish, O king of the earth; and he (the fish), knowing what was thought, O conqueror of enemy cities, the horned one (Śṛṅgī) came there quickly then, O best of the Bharatas (03-185-35))
Manu reflected upon the fish, O king of the earth. And the fish, having understood his thought, O conqueror of enemy cities, Śṛṅgī came there quickly at that time, O foremost of the Bharatas (03-185-35)
तं दृष्ट्वा मनुजेन्द्रेन्द्र मनुर्मत्स्यं जलार्णवे। शृङ्गिणं तं यथोक्तेन रूपेणाद्रिमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥०३-१८५-३६॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā manujendre ndra manur matsyaṁ jalārṇave। śṛṅgiṇaṁ taṁ yathoktena rūpeṇādrim ivocchritam ॥03-185-36॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मनुजेन्द्रेन्द्र (manujendrendra) - O chief of kings among men; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - the fish; जलार्णवे (jalārṇave) - in the ocean; शृङ्गिणम् (śṛṅgiṇam) - horned one; तं (taṁ) - him; यथोक्तेन (yathoktena) - as described; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - with form; अद्रिम् (adrim) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - towering;]
(Having seen him, O chief of kings among men, Manu saw the fish in the ocean—a horned one, him, with the form as described, towering like a mountain.)
O king among men, having seen him, Manu beheld the horned fish in the ocean, towering like a mountain, in the very form as described. (03-185-36)
वटाकरमयं पाशमथ मत्स्यस्य मूर्धनि। मनुर्मनुजशार्दूल तस्मिञ्शृङ्गे न्यवेशयत् ॥०३-१८५-३७॥
vaṭākaramayaṃ pāśam atha matsyasya mūrdhani। manur manujaśārdūla tasmiñ śṛṅge nyaveśayat ॥03-185-37॥
[वटाकरमयं (vaṭākaramayaṃ) - made of banyan fiber; पाशम् (pāśam) - a rope;”},{ थ (atha) - then; मत्स्यस्य (matsyasya) - of the fish; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; मनुजशार्दूल (manujaśārdūla) - O tiger among men; तस्मिन् (tasmiñ) - on that; शृङ्गे (śṛṅge) - horn; न्यवेशयत् (nyaveśayat) - caused to be placed;]
(Then, Man, O tiger among men, placed rope made of banyan fiber on the head of the fish, on that horn.)
Then Manu, O best of men, placed the rope made of banyan fiber on the horn on the fish's head. (03-185-37)
संयतस्तेन पाशेन मत्स्यः परपुरञ्जय। वेगेन महता नावं प्राकर्षल्लवणाम्भसि ॥०३-१८५-३८॥
saṁyatastena pāśena matsyaḥ parapurañjaya। vegena mahatā nāvaṁ prākarṣallavaṇāmbhasi ॥03-185-38॥
[संयतः (saṁyataḥ) - bound; तेन (tena) - by that; पाशेन (pāśena) - with a rope; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; परपुरञ्जय (parapurañjaya) - O conqueror of enemy cities; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; महतā (mahatā) - great; नावं (nāvaṁ) - boat; प्राकर्षत् (prākarṣat) - dragged; लवणाम्भसि (lavaṇāmbhasi) - in the saline water (sea);]
(Bound by that rope, the fish, O conqueror of enemy cities, with great speed dragged the boat in the saline water.)
O conqueror of enemy cities, the fish, being bound by that rope, swiftly dragged the boat in the salt water. (03-185-38)
स ततार तया नावा समुद्रं मनुजेश्वर। नृत्यमानमिवोर्मीभिर्गर्जमानमिवाम्भसा ॥०३-१८५-३९॥
sa tatāra tayā nāvā samudraṃ manujeśvara. nṛtyamānam iv ormībhiḥ garjamānam iva ambhasā ॥03-185-39॥
[स (sa) - he; ततार (tatāra) - crossed; तया (tayā) - by that; नावा (nāvā) - by the boat; समुद्रं (samudraṃ) - the ocean; मनुजेश्वर (manujeśvara) - O king of men; नृत्यमानम् (nṛtyamānam) - dancing; इव (iva) - like; ऊर्मीभिः (ūrmībhiḥ) - by the waves; गर्जमानम् (garjamānam) - roaring; इव (iva) - like; अम्भसा (ambhasā) - with the water;]
(He crossed by that boat the ocean, O king of men, like (one) dancing by the waves, like (one) roaring with the water.)
He, O king of men, crossed the ocean in that boat, as if dancing amidst the waves and roaring with the waters. (03-185-39)
क्षोभ्यमाणा महावातैः सा नौस्तस्मिन्महोदधौ। घूर्णते चपलेव स्त्री मत्ता परपुरञ्जय ॥०३-१८५-४०॥
kṣobhyamāṇā mahāvātaiḥ sā nauḥ tasmin mahodadhau। ghūrṇate capalā iva strī mattā parapurañjaya ॥03-185-40॥
[क्षोभ्यमाणा (kṣobhyamāṇā) - being agitated; महावातैः (mahāvātaiḥ) - by great winds; सा (sā) - that; नौः (nauḥ) - boat; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; महोदधौ (mahodadhau) - great ocean; घूर्णते (ghūrṇate) - spins; चपला (capalā) - fickle; इव (iva) - like; स्त्री (strī) - woman; मत्ता (mattā) - intoxicated; परपुरञ्जय (parapurañjaya) - O conqueror of enemy cities;]
(Being agitated by great winds, that boat in that great ocean spins like an intoxicated fickle woman, O conqueror of enemy cities.)
O conqueror of enemy cities, that boat, being agitated by great winds in the vast ocean, spun about like a fickle and intoxicated woman. (03-185-40)
नैव भूमिर्न च दिशः प्रदिशो वा चकाशिरे। सर्वमाम्भसमेवासीत्खं द्यौश्च नरपुङ्गव ॥०३-१८५-४१॥
naiva bhūmirna ca diśaḥ pradiśo vā cakāśire। sarvamāmbhasamevāsītkhaṃ dyausca narapuṅgava ॥03-185-41॥
[नैव (na eva) - not indeed; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; प्रदिशः (pradiśaḥ) - intermediate points; वा (vā) - or; चकाशिरे (cakāśire) - appeared; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आम्भस्यम् (āmbhasam) - water; एव (eva) - only; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; खम् (kham) - sky; द्यौः (dyaus) - heaven; च (ca) - and; नरपुङ्गव (narapuṅgava) - O foremost among men;]
(Not indeed earth, nor directions, nor intermediate points appeared; all was only water, sky and heaven, O foremost among men.)
O foremost among men, there appeared neither earth nor the cardinal nor the intermediate directions; all that existed was only water, along with sky and heaven. (03-185-41)
एवम्भूते तदा लोके सङ्कुले भरतर्षभ। अदृश्यन्त सप्तर्षयो मनुर्मत्स्यः सहैव ह ॥०३-१८५-४२॥
evambhūte tadā loke saṅkule bharatarṣabha। adṛśyanta saptarṣayo manur matsyaḥ sahaiva ha ॥03-185-42॥
[एवम्भूते (evambhūte) - having thus become; तदा (tadā) - then; लोके (loke) - in the world; सङ्कुले (saṅkule) - in confusion; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; सप्तर्षयः (saptarṣayaḥ) - the seven sages; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; सहैव (sahaiva) - together with; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having thus become, then, in the world in confusion, O best of the Bharatas, were seen the seven sages, Manu, the fish, together indeed.)
O best of the Bharatas, when the world had thus become confused, the seven sages, Manu, and the fish were seen together. (03-185-42)
एवं बहून्वर्षगणांस्तां नावं सोऽथ मत्स्यकः। चकर्षातन्द्रितो राजंस्तस्मिन्सलिलसञ्चये ॥०३-१८५-४३॥
evaṃ bahūn varṣagaṇāṃs tāṃ nāvaṃ saḥ atha matsyakaḥ। cakarṣa atandritaḥ rājaṃs tasmin salilasañcaye॥03-185-43॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहून् (bahūn) - many; वर्षगणान् (varṣagaṇān) - groups of years; तां (tāṃ) - that; नावं (nāvaṃ) - boat; सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; मत्स्यकः (matsyakaḥ) - the fish; चकर्ष (cakarṣa) - dragged; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - untiring; राजंस् (rājaṃs) - O King; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; सलिलसञ्चये (salilasañcaye) - accumulation of water;]
(Thus, for many groups of years, that boat he then, the fish, dragged untiring, O King, in that accumulation of water.)
Thus, O King, for many years, the fish then untiringly dragged that boat in that accumulation of water. (03-185-43)
ततो हिमवतः शृङ्गं यत्परं पुरुषर्षभ। तत्राकर्षत्ततो नावं स मत्स्यः कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-१८५-४४॥
tato himavataḥ śṛṅgaṃ yat paraṃ puruṣarṣabha। tatrākarṣattato nāvaṃ sa matsyaḥ kurunandana ॥03-185-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; from there; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat (the Himalayas); शृङ्गं (śṛṅgam) - peak; यत् (yat) - which; परं (param) - highest; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men; तत्र (tatra) - there; आकर्षत् (ākarṣat) - (he) drew; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; नावं (nāvaṃ) - the boat; स (sa) - he; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O descendant of Kuru;]
(Thereafter, the peak of Himavat which is highest, O bull among men, there that fish drew the boat, O descendant of Kuru.)
Then, O bull among men, the fish drew the boat to the highest peak of the Himalayas, O descendant of Kuru. (03-185-44)
ततोऽब्रवीत्तदा मत्स्यस्तानृषीन्प्रहसञ्शनैः। अस्मिन्हिमवतः शृङ्गे नावं बध्नीत माचिरम् ॥०३-१८५-४५॥
tato'bravīttadā matsyastān ṛṣīn prahasan śanaiḥ। asmin himavataḥ śṛṅge nāvaṃ badhnīta mā ciram॥03-185-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तदा (tadā) - at that time; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; तान् (tān) - to them; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - gently; अस्मिन् (asmin) - on this; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - Himalaya's; शृङ्गे (śṛṅge) - peak; नावम् (nāvam) - boat; बध्नीत (badhnīta) - tie; मा (mā) - do not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(Then, at that time, the fish said to the sages, smiling gently: "On this peak of the Himalaya, tie the boat, do not delay." (03-185-45))
Then, at that time, the fish said to the sages with a gentle smile: "Tie the boat to this peak of the Himalaya without delay." (03-185-45)
सा बद्धा तत्र तैस्तूर्णमृषिभिर्भरतर्षभ। नौर्मत्स्यस्य वचः श्रुत्वा शृङ्गे हिमवतस्तदा ॥०३-१८५-४६॥
sā baddhā tatra tais tūṛṇam ṛṣibhir bharatarṣabha। nau matsyasya vacaḥ śrutvā śṛṅge himavatas tadā ॥03-185-46॥
[सा (sā) - she; बद्धा (baddhā) - fastened; तत्र (tatra) - there; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; तूर्णम् (tūṛṇam) - quickly; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; नौः (nauḥ) - the boat; मत्स्यस्य (matsyasya) - of Matsya; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शृङ्गे (śṛṅge) - on the peak; हिमवतस्तदा (himavatas tadā) - of Himavat then;]
(She fastened there by them quickly by the sages, O bull among the Bharatas, the boat, having heard Matsya's words, on the peak of Himavat then.)
O bull among the Bharatas, then, the sages quickly fastened the boat there on the peak of Himavat, having heard the words of Matsya. (03-185-46)
तच्च नौबन्धनं नाम शृङ्गं हिमवतः परम्। ख्यातमद्यापि कौन्तेय तद्विद्धि भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१८५-४७॥
tac ca naubandhanaṃ nāma śṛṅgaṃ himavataḥ param। khyātam adyāpi kaunteya tad viddhi bharatarṣabha ॥03-185-47॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; नौबन्धनम् (naubandhanam) - Naubandhana (name); नाम (nāma) - by name; शृङ्गम् (śṛṅgam) - peak; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat (Himalaya); परम् (param) - supreme; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - famous; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - Kaunteya (son of Kunti); तत् (tat) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
(That and Naubandhana by name peak of Himavat supreme, famous even today, Kaunteya, that know, O best of Bharatas.)
O Kaunteya, that supreme peak of Himavat named Naubandhana is famous even today—know that, O best of the Bharatas. (03-185-47)
अथाब्रवीदनिमिषस्तानृषीन्सहितांस्तदा। अहं प्रजापतिर्ब्रह्मा मत्परं नाधिगम्यते ॥ मत्स्यरूपेण यूयं च मयास्मान्मोक्षिता भयात् ॥०३-१८५-४८॥
athābravīdanimiṣastānṛṣīn sahitāṃs tadā। ahaṃ prajāpatis brahmā mat-paraṃ na adhigamyate॥ matsya-rūpeṇa yūyaṃ ca mayā asmān mokṣitā bhayāt॥03-185-48॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; निमिषः (nimiṣaḥ) - Nimiṣa (the Unblinking One, i.e., Viṣṇu); तान् (tān) - to them; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; सहितान् (sahitān) - assembled; together; तदा (tadā) - at that time; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajāpati (lord of creatures); ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā (the creator); मत् (mat) - than me; परम् (param) - higher; supreme; न (na) - not; अधिगम्यते (adhigamyate) - is attained; is reached; मस्त्यरूपेण (matsya-rūpeṇa) - in the form of a fish; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; अस्मान् (asmān) - you (accusative plural); मोक्षिताः (mokṣitāḥ) - are released; are saved; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; from danger;]
(Then Nimiṣa said to those sages assembled at that time: I am Prajāpati Brahmā; higher than me is not attained. In the form of a fish, you also by me were released from fear.)
Then Nimiṣa (Viṣṇu) said to those assembled sages: I am Prajāpati, I am Brahmā; none higher than me can be attained. In the form of a fish, you too have been saved by me from danger. (3-185-48)
मनुना च प्रजाः सर्वाः सदेवासुरमानवाः। स्रष्टव्याः सर्वलोकाश्च यच्चेङ्गं यच्च नेङ्गति ॥०३-१८५-४९॥
manunā ca prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevāsuramānavāḥ| sraṣṭavyāḥ sarvalokāś ca yacc eṅgaṃ yacc neṅgati ॥03-185-49॥
[मनुना (manunā) - by Manu; च (ca) - and; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सदेवासुरमानवाः (sadevāsuramānavāḥ) - with devas, asuras, and humans; स्रष्टव्याः (sraṣṭavyāḥ) - to be created; सर्वलोकाः (sarvalokāḥ) - all worlds; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; इङ्गं (eṅgaṃ) - which moves; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; नेङ्गति (neṅgati) - does not move;]
(By Manu also all creatures, with devas, asuras, and humans, to be created, all worlds and that which moves and that which does not move.)
Also, by Manu, all beings—including the gods, asuras, and humans—were to be created: all worlds and everything that moves and does not move. (3-185-49)
तपसा चातितीव्रेण प्रतिभास्य भविष्यति। मत्प्रसादात्प्रजासर्गे न च मोहं गमिष्यति ॥०३-१८५-५०॥
tapasā cātitīvreṇa pratibhāsya bhaviṣyati। matprasādātprajāsarge na ca mohaṁ gamiṣyati॥03-185-50॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; अतितीव्रेण (atitīvreṇa) - by very intense (austerity); प्रतिभास्य (pratibhāsya) - having been manifest; having shone forth; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will occur; मत्प्रसादात् (mat-prasādāt) - by my favor; प्रजासर्गे (prajā-sarge) - in the creation of beings; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मोहं (mohaṁ) - delusion; confusion; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will reach; will go;]
(By austerity and by very intense (austerity), having been manifest, it will be. By my favor, in the creation of beings, not and delusion will reach.)
Through very intense austerity, (knowledge) will manifest; by my favor, in the creation of beings, delusion will not arise. (03-185-50)
इत्युक्त्वा वचनं मत्स्यः क्षणेनादर्शनं गतः। स्रष्टुकामः प्रजाश्चापि मनुर्वैवस्वतः स्वयम् ॥ प्रमूढोऽभूत्प्रजासर्गे तपस्तेपे महत्ततः ॥०३-१८५-५१॥
ity uktvā vacanaṃ matsyaḥ kṣaṇena adarśanaṃ gataḥ। sraṣṭu-kāmaḥ prajāś ca api manuḥ vaivasvataḥ svayam॥ pramūḍhaḥ abhūt prajā-sarge tapaḥ tepe mahat tataḥ॥03-185-51॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; वचनं (vacanam) - words; मत्स्यः (matsyaḥ) - the fish; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; अदर्शनं (adarśanam) - invisibility; गतः (gataḥ) - went; स्रष्टुकामः (sraṣṭu-kāmaḥ) - desirous to create; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - offspring; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - the son of Vivasvat; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; प्रमूढः (pramūḍhaḥ) - confused; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; प्रजासर्गे (prajā-sarge) - in the creation of offspring; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तेपे (tepe) - performed; महत् (mahat) - great; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter;]
(Thus having said the words, the fish went to invisibility in an instant. Desirous to create offspring, Manu, son of Vivasvat, himself also (became) confused in the creation of offspring; thereafter he performed great austerity.)
Having spoken thus, the fish vanished in an instant. And Manu, the son of Vivasvat, desirous of creating offspring, himself became confused about creation and thereafter performed great austerity. (3-185-51)
तपसा महता युक्तः सोऽथ स्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे। सर्वाः प्रजा मनुः साक्षाद्यथावद्भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१८५-५२॥
tapasā mahatā yuktaḥ so'tha sraṣṭuṃ pracakrame. sarvāḥ prajā manuḥ sākṣādyathāvadbharatarṣabha ॥03-185-52॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महता (mahatā) - great; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; सः (saḥ) - he; अथ (atha) - then; स्रष्टुम् (sraṣṭum) - to create; प्रचक्रमे (pracakrame) - he commenced; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रजा (prajāḥ) - creatures; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; भरतरषभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Endowed with great austerity, he then began to create all creatures directly, properly, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, Manu, endowed with great austerity, then began to create all beings directly and properly. (03-185-52)
इत्येतन्मात्स्यकं नाम पुराणं परिकीर्तितम्। आख्यानमिदमाख्यातं सर्वपापहरं मया ॥०३-१८५-५३॥
ity etan mātsyakaṃ nāma purāṇaṃ parikīrtitam. ākhyānam idam ākhyātaṃ sarva-pāpa-haraṃ mayā ॥03-185-53॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; मात्स्यकं (mātsyakaṃ) - relating to Matsya; नाम (nāma) - named; पुराणं (purāṇam) - Purāṇa; परिकीर्तितम् (parikīrtitam) - proclaimed; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - narrative; इदम् (idam) - this; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - told; सर्वपापहरम् (sarva-pāpa-haram) - remover of all sins; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Thus, this Matsya-named Purāṇa has been proclaimed. This narrative, remover of all sins, has been told by me.)
Thus, this Purāṇa named Matsya has been proclaimed. I have narrated this account, which removes all sins. (03-185-53)
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं मनोश्चरितमादितः। स सुखी सर्वसिद्धार्थः स्वर्गलोकमियान्नरः ॥०३-१८५-५४॥
ya idaṃ śṛṇuyān nityaṃ manoś caritam āditaḥ। sa sukhī sarvasiddhārthaḥ svargalokam iyān naraḥ॥03-185-54॥
[य (ya) - who; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - would hear; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; मनोः (manoḥ) - of Manu; चरितम् (caritam) - deed; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; सः (saḥ) - he; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; सर्वसिद्धार्थः (sarvasiddhārthaḥ) - one who has all attainments; स्वर्गलोकम् (svargalokam) - heavenly world; इयान् (iyān) - would go; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Who this would hear always of Manu's deed from the beginning, he happy, all-attained, to the heavenly world would go, man.)
Whoever always listens to this account of Manu's deeds from the beginning, that man, happy and fulfilled in all accomplishments, will go to the heavenly world. (03-185-54)
