tataḥ sa punarevātha mārkaṇḍeyaṃ yaśasvinam। papraccha vinayopeto dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-186-1॥

(Then he again indeed, thereupon, the illustrious Markandeya, he asked, endowed with humility, the King of Dharma, Yudhishthira.)

नैके युगसहस्रान्तास्त्वया दृष्टा महामुने। न चापीह समः कश्चिदायुषा तव विद्यते ॥ वर्जयित्वा महात्मानं ब्राह्मणं परमेष्ठिनम् ॥०३-१८६-२॥
naike yugasaḥasrāntāstvayā dṛṣṭā mahāmune। na cāpīha samaḥ kaścid āyuṣā tava vidyate ॥ varjayitvā mahātmānaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ parameṣṭhinam ॥03-186-2॥
[नैके (na eke) - not many; युगसहस्रान्ताः (yuga-sahasra-antāḥ) - thousands of yugas ended; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - have been seen; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; इह (iha) - here; समः (samaḥ) - equal; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; आयुषा (āyuṣā) - in lifespan; तव (tava) - your; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; वर्जयित्वा (varjayitvā) - except; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - Brāhmaṇa; परमेष्ठिनम् (parameṣṭhinam) - Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā);]
(Not many thousands of yugas ended have by you been seen, O great sage. And not here also equal anyone in lifespan your is found, except the great-souled Brāhmaṇa Parameṣṭhin.)
O great sage, countless thousands of yuga cycles have passed before your eyes. And there is no one here whose lifespan equals yours, except for the great-souled Brāhmaṇa, Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā). (03-186-2)
अनन्तरिक्षे लोकेऽस्मिन्देवदानववर्जिते। त्वमेव प्रलये विप्र ब्रह्माणमुपतिष्ठसि ॥०३-१८६-३॥
anantarikṣe loke'smin devadānavavarjite. tvam eva pralaye vipra brahmāṇam upatiṣṭhasi ॥03-186-3॥
[अनन्तरिक्षे (anantarikṣe) - in the endless space; लोकेऽस्मिन् (loke'smin) - in this world; देवदानववर्जिते (devadānavavarjite) - devoid of gods and demons; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रलये (pralaye) - at the dissolution; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; उपतिष्ठसि (upatiṣṭhasi) - you attend;]
(In the endless space, in this world which is devoid of gods and demons, at the dissolution, O brāhmaṇa, you indeed attend upon Brahmā.)
O brāhmaṇa, at the dissolution, in this world free from gods and demons, in the endless space, you alone attend upon Brahmā. (03-186-3)
प्रलये चापि निर्वृत्ते प्रबुद्धे च पितामहे। त्वमेव सृज्यमानानि भूतानीह प्रपश्यसि ॥०३-१८६-४॥
pralaye cāpi nirvṛtte prabuddhe ca pitāmahe। tvam eva sṛjyamānāni bhūtāni iha prapaśyasi॥03-186-4॥
[प्रलये (pralaye) - at dissolution; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निर्वृत्ते (nirvṛtte) - having concluded; प्रबुद्धे (prabuddhe) - awakened; च (ca) - and; पितामहे (pitāmahe) - Grandfather (Brahmā); त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; सृज्यमानानि (sṛjyamānāni) - being created; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; इह (iha) - here; प्रपश्यसि (prapaśyasi) - you perceive;]
(At dissolution and also, having concluded, and when Grandfather (Brahmā) has awakened, you indeed beings being created here you perceive.)
When the dissolution is complete and the Grandfather (Brahmā) awakens, you alone see here all the beings coming into existence. (03-186-4)
चतुर्विधानि विप्रर्षे यथावत्परमेष्ठिना। वायुभूता दिशः कृत्वा विक्षिप्यापस्ततस्ततः ॥०३-१८६-५॥
caturvidhāni viprarṣe yathāvat parameṣṭhinā। vāyubhūtā diśaḥ kṛtvā vikṣipyāpas tatastataḥ ॥03-186-5॥
[चतुर्विधानि (caturvidhāni) - of four kinds; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O brahmanical sage; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; परमेष्ठिना (parameṣṭhinā) - by Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā); वायुभूता (vāyubhūtā) - turned into wind; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the quarters; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; विक्षिप्य (vikṣipya) - scattering; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; ततस्ततः (tatastataḥ) - here and there;]
(O brahmanical sage, of four kinds, properly, by Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā), having made the quarters into wind, scattering waters here and there.)
O sage among the twice-born, Parameṣṭhin (Brahmā) properly made the four kinds by transforming the quarters into wind and scattering the waters here and there. (03-186-5)
त्वया लोकगुरुः साक्षात्सर्वलोकपितामहः। आराधितो द्विजश्रेष्ठ तत्परेण समाधिना ॥०३-१८६-६॥
tvayā lokaguruḥ sākṣātsarvalokapitāmahaḥ। ārādhito dvijaśreṣṭha tatpareṇa samādhinā ॥03-186-6॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; लोकगुरुः (lokaguruḥ) - the teacher of the worlds; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; सर्वलोकपितामहः (sarvalokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of all worlds; आराधितः (ārādhitaḥ) - worshipped; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; तत्परेण (tatpareṇa) - with supreme concentration; समाधिना (samādhinā) - by meditation;]
(By you, the teacher of the worlds, directly the grandsire of all worlds, worshipped, O best of twice-born, with supreme concentration by meditation.)
O best of twice-born, by you, the teacher of the worlds, the very grandsire of all worlds, has been directly worshipped with supreme concentration through meditation. (03-186-6)
तस्मात्सर्वान्तको मृत्युर्जरा वा देहनाशिनी। न त्वा विशति विप्रर्षे प्रसादात्परमेष्ठिनः ॥०३-१८६-७॥
tasmātsarvāntako mṛtyur jarā vā dehanāśinī. na tvā viśati viprarṣe prasādāt parameṣṭhinaḥ ॥03-186-7॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्व-अन्तकः (sarva-antakaḥ) - end of all; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; जरा (jarā) - old age; वा (vā) - or; देह-नाशिनी (deha-nāśinī) - destroyer of the body; न (na) - not; त्वा (tvā) - you; विशति (viśati) - enters; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the favor; परमेष्ठिनः (parameṣṭhinaḥ) - of Parameṣṭhin (the Supreme Lord);]
(Therefore, death, the end of all, or old age, the destroyer of the body, does not enter you, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, by the favor of Parameṣṭhin.)
Therefore, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, death, which ends all, or old age that destroys the body, does not affect you by the favor of the Supreme Lord. (03-186-7)
यदा नैव रविर्नाग्निर्न वायुर्न च चन्द्रमाः। नैवान्तरिक्षं नैवोर्वी शेषं भवति किञ्चन ॥०३-१८६-८॥
yadā naiva ravirnāgnirna vāyurna ca candramāḥ। naivāntarikṣaṃ naivorvī śeṣaṃ bhavati kiñcana॥03-186-8॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; नैव (naiva) - not indeed; रविः (raviḥ) - sun; न (na) - not; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; न (na) - not; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - moon; नैव (naiva) - not indeed; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - ether; नैव (naiva) - not indeed; उर्वी (urvī) - earth; शेषम् (śeṣam) - anything remaining; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(When not indeed the sun, not fire, not wind, and not the moon, not indeed ether, not indeed earth, anything remaining becomes at all.)
When there is neither sun, nor fire, nor wind, nor the moon, nor even ether or earth, nothing at all remains. (03-186-8)
तस्मिन्नेकार्णवे लोके नष्टे स्थावरजङ्गमे। नष्टे देवासुरगणे समुत्सन्नमहोरगे ॥०३-१८६-९॥
tasminn ekārṇave loke naṣṭe sthāvarajaṅgame। naṣṭe devāsuragaṇe samutsannamahorage ॥03-186-9॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एकार्णवे (ekārṇave) - in the sole ocean; लोके (loke) - world; नष्टे (naṣṭe) - (having been) destroyed; स्थावरजङ्गमे (sthāvarajaṅgame) - (all) immobile and mobile beings; नष्टे (naṣṭe) - (having been) destroyed; देवासुरगणे (devāsuragaṇe) - groups of gods and demons; समुत्सन्न (samutsanna) - completely vanished; महोरगे (mahorage) - great serpents;]
(In that one ocean world, when (all) immobile and mobile beings were destroyed, when the groups of gods and demons were destroyed, the great serpents were completely vanished.)
When, in that world of the single ocean, all immobile and mobile beings had perished, and the hosts of gods, demons, and great serpents were completely gone. (03-186-9)
शयानममितात्मानं पद्मे पद्मनिकेतनम्। त्वमेकः सर्वभूतेशं ब्रह्माणमुपतिष्ठसि ॥०३-१८६-१०॥
śayānam amitātmānaṃ padme padmaniketanam। tvam ekaḥ sarvabhūteśaṃ brahmāṇam upatiṣṭhasi ॥03-186-10॥
[शयानम् (śayānam) - lying (down); अमितात्मानम् (amitātmānam) - of infinite self; पद्मे (padme) - on a lotus; पद्मनिकेतनम् (padmaniketanam) - whose abode is the lotus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; सर्वभूतेशम् (sarvabhūteśam) - lord of all beings; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; उपतिष्ठसि (upatiṣṭhasi) - you attend;]
(Lying, of infinite self, on a lotus, whose abode is the lotus; you alone attend to Brahmā, the lord of all beings.)
You alone attend to Brahmā, the lord of all beings, who is lying, of infinite self, on a lotus, whose abode is the lotus. (03-186-10)
एतत्प्रत्यक्षतः सर्वं पूर्ववृत्तं द्विजोत्तम। तस्मादिच्छामहे श्रोतुं सर्वहेत्वात्मिकां कथाम् ॥०३-१८६-११॥
etatpratyakṣataḥ sarvaṃ pūrvavṛttaṃ dvijottama। tasmād icchāmahe śrotuṃ sarvahetvātmikāṃ kathām ॥03-186-11॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; प्रत्यक्षतः (pratyakṣataḥ) - directly; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; पूर्ववृत्तं (pūrvavṛttaṃ) - former event; द्विजोत्म (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इच्छामहे (icchāmahe) - we wish; श्रोतुं (śrotuṃ) - to hear; सर्वहेत्वात्मिकां (sarvahetvātmikāṃ) - endowed with all causes; कथाम् (kathām) - story;]
(This directly all former event O best of twice-born therefore we wish to hear the story endowed with all causes.)
O best of the twice-born, having directly perceived all these former events, therefore we wish to hear the story which encompasses all causes. (03-186-11)
अनुभूतं हि बहुशस्त्वयैकेन द्विजोत्तम। न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चित्सर्वलोकेषु नित्यदा ॥०३-१८६-१२॥
anubhūtaṃ hi bahuśastvayaikena dvijottama। na te'styaviditaṃ kiñcit sarvalokeṣu nityadā ॥03-186-12॥
[अनुभूतं (anubhūtaṃ) - experienced; हि (hi) - indeed; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; एकेन (ekena) - alone; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अविदितं (aviditaṃ) - unknown; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(Experienced indeed many times by you alone, O best of twice-born; not to you is there anything unknown in all worlds always.)
O best of twice-born, you alone have experienced this many times indeed; there is nothing unknown to you at any time in all the worlds. (03-186-12)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि नमस्कृत्वा स्वयम्भुवे। पुरुषाय पुराणाय शाश्वतायाव्ययाय च ॥०३-१८६-१३॥
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi namaskṛtvā svayambhuve. puruṣāya purāṇāya śāśvatāyāvyayāya ca ॥03-186-13॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I will narrate; नमस्कृत्वा (namaskṛtvā) - having bowed; स्वयम्भुवे (svayambhuve) - to the self-born; पुरुषाय (puruṣāya) - to the Purusha; पुराणाय (purāṇāya) - to the ancient; शाश्वतायाव्ययाय (śāśvatāyāvyayāya) - to the eternal, to the imperishable; च (ca) - and;]
(Indeed, to you I will narrate, having bowed to the self-born, to the Purusha, to the ancient, to the eternal, to the imperishable and.)
Indeed, I will tell you, having bowed to the self-born, the Purusha, the ancient, the eternal, and the imperishable. (03-186-13)
य एष पृथुदीर्घाक्षः पीतवासा जनार्दनः। एष कर्ता विकर्ता च सर्वभावनभूतकृत् ॥०३-१८६-१४॥
ya eṣa pṛthudīrghākṣaḥ pītavāsā janārdanaḥ। eṣa kartā vikartā ca sarvabhāvanabhūtakṛt ॥03-186-14॥
[य (ya) - who; एष (eṣa) - this (one); पृथुदीर्घाक्षः (pṛthudīrghākṣaḥ) - having broad and long eyes; पीतवासा (pītavāsā) - wearing yellow garments; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana; एष (eṣa) - this (one); कर्त (kartā) - creator; विकर्ता (vikartā) - transformer; च (ca) - and; सर्वभावनभूतकृत् (sarvabhāvanabhūtakṛt) - maker of all beings and existences;]
(Who this (one), having broad and long eyes, wearing yellow garments, Janārdana; this (one), the creator, the transformer and maker of all beings and existences.)
He who is this one—Janārdana, having broad and long eyes, wearing yellow robes—he is the creator, the transformer, and the maker of all beings and existences. (03-186-14)
अचिन्त्यं महदाश्चर्यं पवित्रमपि चोत्तमम्। अनादिनिधनं भूतं विश्वमक्षयमव्ययम् ॥०३-१८६-१५॥
acintyaṃ mahad-āścaryaṃ pavitram api cottamam। anādi-nidhanaṃ bhūtaṃ viśvaṃ akṣayam avyayam ॥03-186-15॥
[अचिन्त्यं (acintyaṃ) - unthinkable; महदाश्चर्यं (mahad-āścaryaṃ) - great wonder; पवित्रम् (pavitram) - pure; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; अनादिनिधनं (anādi-nidhanaṃ) - beginningless and endless; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - existent; विश्वम् (viśvam) - universe; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - unchanging;]
(Unthinkable, great wonder, pure, also and highest; beginningless and endless, existent, universe, imperishable, unchanging.)

एष कर्ता न क्रियते कारणं चापि पौरुषे। यो ह्येनं पुरुषं वेत्ति देवा अपि न तं विदुः ॥०३-१८६-१६॥
eṣa kartā na kriyate kāraṇaṃ cāpi pauruṣe। yo hyenaṃ puruṣaṃ vetti devā api na taṃ viduḥ॥03-186-16॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; न (na) - not; क्रियते (kriyate) - is made; कारणं (kāraṇam) - cause; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पौरुषे (pauruṣe) - in (regard to) the person; यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; एनं (enaṃ) - this (one); पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person; वetti (vetti) - knows; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; तं (taṃ) - him; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(This doer is not made (does not become) the cause also in the person; who indeed knows this person, even the gods do not know him.)
This doer is not made the cause even in the person; whoever indeed knows this person—him even the gods do not know. (03-186-16)
सर्वमाश्चर्यमेवैतन्निर्वृत्तं राजसत्तम। आदितो मनुजव्याघ्र कृत्स्नस्य जगतः क्षये ॥०३-१८६-१७॥
sarvam āścaryam eva etat nirvṛttam rāja-sattama। ādito manuja-vyāghra kṛtsnasya jagataḥ kṣaye ॥03-186-17॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; marvel; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; एतत् (etat) - this; निर्वृत्तम् (nirvṛttam) - has happened; has taken place; राजसत्तम (rāja-sattama) - O best of kings; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; मनुजव्याघ्र (manuja-vyāghra) - O tiger among men; कृत्स्नस्य (kṛtsnasya) - of all; of the whole; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; क्षये (kṣaye) - at destruction; at the end;]
(All this indeed is a marvel, O best of kings; already has happened, O tiger among men, from the beginning, at the destruction of the whole world.)
O best of kings, all this is truly a wonder; O tiger among men, it has already occurred from the beginning, at the destruction of the entire world. (03-186-17)
चत्वार्याहुः सहस्राणि वर्षाणां तत्कृतं युगम्। तस्य तावच्छती सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशश्च ततः परम् ॥०३-१८६-१८॥
catvāry āhuḥ sahasrāṇi varṣāṇāṃ tat kṛtaṃ yugam। tasya tāvat śatī sandhyā sandhyāṃśaś ca tataḥ param ॥03-186-18॥
[चत्वारि (catvāri) - four; आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) say; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - of years; तत् (tat) - that; कृतम् (kṛtam) - Kṛta (age); युगम् (yugam) - cycle (of time); तस्य (tasya) - of that; तावत् (tāvat) - so much (the same); शती (śatī) - hundredth part; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight (junction); सन्ध्यांशः (sandhyāṃśaḥ) - portion of twilight; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; परम् (param) - after, next;]
(They say four thousands of years is that Kṛta cycle. Of that, so much (the same) is the twilight; the portion of twilight also, after that (follows).)
They say that the Kṛta Yuga consists of four thousand years. Its twilight period is of the same amount, and after that, there is the portion of twilight. (03-186-18)
त्रीणि वर्षसहस्राणि त्रेतायुगमिहोच्यते। तस्य तावच्छती सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशश्च ततः परम् ॥०३-१८६-१९॥
trīṇi varṣasahasrāṇi tretāyugamihochyate। tasya tāvacchatī sandhyā sandhyāṃśaśca tataḥ param ॥03-186-19॥
[त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; (neuter plural) वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣasahasrāṇi) - thousand years; (plural, neuter) त्रेतायुगम् (tretāyugam) - the Tretā Yuga; (neuter singular) इह (iha) - here; (in this context) उच्यते (uchyate) - is said; (is called) तस्य (tasya) - of it; (genitive singular, neuter) तावत् (tāvat) - the same; so much; (in this measure) शती (śatī) - (a) hundred; century; (in this context, a period of one-hundred years) सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - junction; twilight; transition period; सन्ध्यांशश् (sandhyāṃśaḥ) - part of the twilight; portion of the junction; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - after that; परम् (param) - beyond; after; (subsequently);]
(Three thousand years is here said to be the Tretā Yuga. Of it, this much, a hundred years, is the twilight, and a part of the twilight and after that, beyond.)
The Tretā Yuga is said here to be three thousand years. Of this, a hundred years constitute the twilight period, and a part of the twilight follows beyond that. (03-186-19)
तथा वर्षसहस्रे द्वे द्वापरं परिमाणतः। तस्यापि द्विशती सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशश्च ततः परम् ॥०३-१८६-२०॥
tathā varṣasahasre dve dvāparaṃ parimāṇataḥ। tasyāpi dviśatī sandhyā sandhyāṃśaś ca tataḥ param॥03-186-20॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; वर्षसहस्रे (varṣasahasre) - two thousand years; द्वे (dve) - two; द्वापरं (dvāparam) - dvāpara (the Dvāpara Yuga); परिमाणतः (parimāṇataḥ) - in measurement; तस्यापि (tasyāpi) - of that also; द्विशती (dviśatī) - two hundred; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight period; सन्ध्यांशश्च (sandhyāṃśaś ca) - and the part of the twilight; ततः (tataḥ) - after that; परम् (param) - further;]
(Thus, two thousand years, the Dvāpara (Yuga), in measurement. Of that also, two hundred (years) twilight, and the part of the twilight, after that, further.)
Thus, the Dvāpara Yuga is measured as two thousand years. Of that, two hundred years are the twilight period and part of the twilight after that. (03-186-20)
सहस्रमेकं वर्षाणां ततः कलियुगं स्मृतम्। तस्य वर्षशतं सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशश्च ततः परम् ॥ सन्ध्यासन्ध्यांशयोस्तुल्यं प्रमाणमुपधारय ॥०३-१८६-२१॥
sahasramekaṁ varṣāṇāṁ tataḥ kaliyugaṁ smṛtam। tasya varṣaśataṁ sandhyā sandhyāṁśaśca tataḥ param॥ sandhyāsandhyāṁśayostulyaṁ pramāṇamupadhāraya॥03-186-21॥
[सहस्रमेकं (sahasram ekam) - one thousand; one; वर्षाणां (varṣāṇām) - of years; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कलियुगं (kaliyugam) - Kali age; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered; तस्य (tasya) - of that; वर्षशतं (varṣaśatam) - hundred years; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight (junction period); सन्ध्यांशः (sandhyāṁśaḥ) - a part of the twilight; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; परम् (param) - after; सन्ध्यासन्ध्यांशयोः (sandhyāsandhyāṁśayoḥ) - of twilight and its part; तुल्यं (tulyaṁ) - equal; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - measure; उपधारय (upadhāraya) - understand;]
(One thousand years then Kali age is remembered. Of that, the twilight is one hundred years, and a part of the twilight after that. Of twilight and its part, understand an equal measure.)
The Kali age is said to be of one thousand years; its twilight lasts for one hundred years, and after that, a portion of the twilight. Consider the measurements of both the twilight and its portion as being equal. (3-186-21)
क्षीणे कलियुगे चैव प्रवर्तति कृतं युगम्। एषा द्वादशसाहस्री युगाख्या परिकीर्तिता ॥०३-१८६-२२॥
kṣīṇe kaliyuge caiva pravartati kṛtaṃ yugam। eṣā dvādaśasāhasrī yugākhyā parikīrtitā ॥03-186-22॥

(When Kali-yuga is diminished and indeed the Kṛta yuga commences, this (cycle) of twelve thousand, called a yuga, is proclaimed.)
When the Kali Yuga comes to an end and the Kṛta Yuga begins, this cycle of twelve thousand, known as a yuga, is declared. (03-186-22)
एतत्सहस्रपर्यन्तमहो ब्राह्ममुदाहृतम्। विश्वं हि ब्रह्मभवने सर्वशः परिवर्तते ॥ लोकानां मनुजव्याघ्र प्रलयं तं विदुर्बुधाः ॥०३-१८६-२३॥
etatsaḥasraparyantamaho brāhmamudāhṛtam। viśvaṃ hi brahmabhavane sarvaśaḥ parivartate॥ lokānāṃ manujavyāghra pralayaṃ taṃ vidurbudhāḥ॥03-186-23॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सहस्रपर्यन्तम् (sahasraparyantam) - of a thousand (years) duration; महत् (mahat) - great; ब्राह्मम् (brāhmam) - Brahma's (age); उदाहृतम् (udāhṛtam) - declared; विश्वम् (viśvam) - the universe; हि (hi) - indeed; ब्रह्मभवने (brahmabhavane) - in Brahma's abode; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - revolves; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; मनुजव्याघ्र (manujavyāghra) - O tiger among men; प्रलयम् (pralayam) - dissolution; तम् (tam) - that; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; बुधाः (budhāḥ) - the wise;]
(This, thousand-duration, great Brahma's (age), is declared. The universe, indeed, in Brahma's abode, entirely revolves. The dissolution of the worlds, O tiger among men, that the wise know.)
This great period of a thousand (years) is known as the day of Brahma. For the entire universe, indeed, in Brahma's abode, completely undergoes transformation. The wise, O tiger among men, know this as the dissolution of the worlds. (03-186-23)
अल्पावशिष्टे तु तदा युगान्ते भरतर्षभ। सहस्रान्ते नराः सर्वे प्रायशोऽनृतवादिनः ॥०३-१८६-२४॥
alpāvaśiṣṭe tu tadā yugānte bharatarṣabha। sahasrānte narāḥ sarve prāyaśo'nṛtavādinaḥ ॥03-186-24॥

(When only a few remain, but then, at the end of the age, O best of the Bharatas, at the end of a thousand years, all men, mostly, speakers of falsehood.)

यज्ञप्रतिनिधिः पार्थ दानप्रतिनिधिस्तथा। व्रतप्रतिनिधिश्चैव तस्मिन्काले प्रवर्तते ॥०३-१८६-२५॥

(Substitute-for-sacrifice, O son of Pṛthā, substitute-for-gift likewise, and indeed substitute-for-vow in that time functions.)
O Pārtha, the substitute for sacrifice, the substitute for gift, and likewise the substitute for vow are in effect at that time. (03-186-25)
ब्राह्मणाः शूद्रकर्माणस्तथा शूद्रा धनार्जकाः। क्षत्रधर्मेण वाप्यत्र वर्तयन्ति गते युगे ॥०३-१८६-२६॥
brāhmaṇāḥ śūdrakarmāṇas tathā śūdrā dhanārjakāḥ। kṣatradharmeṇa vāpy atra vartayanti gate yuge ॥03-186-26॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; शूद्रकर्माणः (śūdrakarmāṇaḥ) - performing śūdra duties; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - śūdras; धनार्जकाः (dhanārjakāḥ) - money earners; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - by kṣatriya duty; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; वर्तयन्ति (vartayanti) - live; गते (gate) - having passed; युगे (yuge) - in the age;]
(Brāhmaṇas performing śūdra duties, likewise śūdras money earners, by kṣatriya duty or also here live, having passed in the age.)
Brāhmaṇas perform the duties of śūdras, and similarly, śūdras become money earners; here, they may also live by kṣatriya duties, when the age has passed. (03-186-26)
निवृत्तयज्ञस्वाध्यायाः पिण्डोदकविवर्जिताः। ब्राह्मणाः सर्वभक्षाश्च भविष्यन्ति कलौ युगे ॥०३-१८६-२७॥
nivṛttayajñasvādhyāyāḥ piṇḍodakavivarjitāḥ। brāhmaṇāḥ sarvabhakṣāś ca bhaviṣyanti kalau yuge ॥03-186-27॥

(Discontinued from sacrifice and self-study, devoid of offerings of rice-balls and water, Brāhmaṇas eating everything and will become in Kali age.)
In the Kali age, Brāhmaṇas will abandon sacrifice and self-study, be deprived of offerings of rice-balls and water, and become eaters of everything. (03-186-27)
अजपा ब्राह्मणास्तात शूद्रा जपपरायणाः। विपरीते तदा लोके पूर्वरूपं क्षयस्य तत् ॥०३-१८६-२८॥
ajapā brāhmaṇās tāta śūdrā japa-parāyaṇāḥ। viparīte tadā loke pūrva-rūpaṃ kṣayasya tat॥03-186-28॥
[अजपा (ajapā) - not chanting; (not reciting mantras); ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; (members of the priestly class); तात (tāta) - O dear one; (address, vocative); शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - Śūdras; (members of the laboring class); जपपरायणाः (japa-parāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to recitation; (engaged in chanting/mantra repetition); विपरीते (viparīte) - reversed; (contrary; inverted;) तदा (tadā) - then; (at that time); लोके (loke) - in the world; पूर्वरूपम् (pūrva-rūpam) - the foretoken; (previous form; sign); क्षयस्य (kṣayasya) - of decline; (of destruction; of decay); तत् (tat) - that;]
(Not chanting, Brāhmaṇas, O dear one, Śūdras devoted to recitation; reversed then, in the world, the foretoken of decline, that.)
O dear one, when Brāhmaṇas do not chant and Śūdras are devoted to recitation, then, in the world, that is a sign of coming decline. (03-186-28)
बहवो म्लेच्छराजानः पृथिव्यां मनुजाधिप। मिथ्यानुशासिनः पापा मृषावादपरायणाः ॥०३-१८६-२९॥
bahavo mleccharājānaḥ pṛthivyāṁ manujādhipa। mithyānuśāsinaḥ pāpā mṛṣāvādaparāyaṇāḥ ॥03-186-29॥
[बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; म्लेच्छराजानः (mleccharājānaḥ) - barbarian kings; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men; मिथ्यानुशासिनः (mithyānuśāsinaḥ) - false rulers; पापाः (pāpāḥ) - wicked; मृषावादपरायणाः (mṛṣāvādaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to false speech;]
(Many barbarian kings on the earth, O lord of men, false rulers, wicked, devoted to false speech.)
O lord of men, there are many barbarian kings on earth—false rulers, wicked, and dedicated to speaking lies. (03-186-29)
आन्ध्राः शकाः पुलिन्दाश्च यवनाश्च नराधिपाः। काम्बोजा और्णिकाः शूद्रास्तथाभीरा नरोत्तम ॥०३-१८६-३०॥
āndhrāḥ śakāḥ pulindāś ca yavanāś ca narādhipāḥ। kāmbojā aurṇikāḥ śūdrās tathābhīrā narottama ॥03-186-30॥

न तदा ब्राह्मणः कश्चित्स्वधर्ममुपजीवति। क्षत्रिया अपि वैश्याश्च विकर्मस्था नराधिप ॥०३-१८६-३१॥
na tadā brāhmaṇaḥ kaścit svadharmam upajīvati। kṣatriyā api vaiśyāś ca vikarmasthā narādhipa ॥03-186-31॥

At that time, no brāhmaṇa lives according to his proper dharma. Even kṣatriyas and vaiśyas, O king, engage in improper actions. (03-186-31)
अल्पायुषः स्वल्पबला अल्पतेजःपराक्रमाः। अल्पदेहाल्पसाराश्च तथा सत्याल्पभाषिणः ॥०३-१८६-३२॥
alpāyuṣaḥ svalpabalā alpagejaḥparākramāḥ। alpadehālpasārāśca tathā satyalpabhāṣiṇaḥ॥03-186-32॥
[अल्पायुषः (alpāyuṣaḥ) - of short lifespan; स्वल्पबला (svalpabalā) - of little strength; अल्पतेजःपराक्रमाः (alpagejaḥparākramāḥ) - of little energy and valor; अल्पदेह (alpadeha) - of small body; अल्पसाराः (alpasārāḥ) - of little substance; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सत्याल्पभाषिणः (satyalpabhāṣiṇaḥ) - who speak little truth;]

They are short-lived, weak, lacking in energy and valor, of small stature and little substance, and also speak little truth. (03-186-32)
बहुशून्या जनपदा मृगव्यालावृता दिशः। युगान्ते समनुप्राप्ते वृथा च ब्रह्मचारिणः ॥ भोवादिनस्तथा शूद्रा ब्राह्मणाश्चार्यवादिनः ॥०३-१८६-३३॥
bahuśūnyā janapadā mṛgavyālāvṛtā diśaḥ। yugānte samanuprāpte vṛthā ca brahmacāriṇaḥ॥ bhovādinastathā śūdrā brāhmaṇāścāryavādinaḥ॥03-186-33॥

(Many-empty regions, regions covered with wild beasts, at the end of an age having fully arrived, in vain also the brahmacārins; those who say "bho" thus the śūdras, and the brāhmaṇas (are) speakers of improper conduct. (03-186-33))
The settlements become largely deserted, with regions overrun by wild animals in all directions; when the end of the age arrives, brahmacārins exist in vain. Those who use 'bho' as a form of address are śūdras, and even the brāhmaṇas speak improper doctrines. (03-186-33)
युगान्ते मनुजव्याघ्र भवन्ति बहुजन्तवः। न तथा घ्राणयुक्ताश्च सर्वगन्धा विशां पते ॥ रसाश्च मनुजव्याघ्र न तथा स्वादुयोगिनः ॥०३-१८६-३४॥
yugānte manujavyāghra bhavanti bahujantavaḥ। na tathā ghrāṇayuktāś ca sarvagandhā viśāṃ pate॥ rasāś ca manujavyāghra na tathā svāduyoginaḥ॥03-186-34॥
[युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of an age; मनुजव्याघ्र (manujavyāghra) - O tiger among men; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; बहुजन्तवः (bahujantavaḥ) - many beings; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; घ्राणयुक्ताः (ghrāṇayuktāḥ) - endowed with smell; च (ca) - and; सर्वगन्धाः (sarvagandhāḥ) - all scents; विशां (viśām) - of men; of people; पते (pate) - O lord; रसाः (rasāḥ) - tastes; च (ca) - and; मनुजव्याघ्र (manujavyāghra) - O tiger among men; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; स्वादुयोगिनः (svāduyoginaḥ) - possessing pleasantness;]
(At the end of an age, O tiger among men, many beings become; not so are all scents possessing smell, O lord of men; and, O tiger among men, tastes are not so endowed with pleasantness.)
At the end of the age, O tiger among men, numerous beings are born; but, O lord of men, all scents are not possessed of fragrance, nor are the tastes, O tiger among men, as endowed with sweetness. (03-186-34)
बहुप्रजा ह्रस्वदेहाः शीलाचारविवर्जिताः। मुखेभगाः स्त्रियो राजन्भविष्यन्ति युगक्षये ॥०३-१८६-३५॥
bahu-prajā hrasva-dehāḥ śīla-ācāra-vivarjitāḥ। mukhe-bhagāḥ striyo rājan bhaviṣyanti yuga-kṣaye ॥03-186-35॥
[बहुप्रजा (bahu-prajā) - having many offspring; ह्रस्वदेहाः (hrasva-dehāḥ) - of short bodies; शीलाचारविवर्जिताः (śīla-ācāra-vivarjitāḥ) - devoid of good conduct and character; मुखेभगाः (mukhe-bhagāḥ) - having their sexual organ on the face; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; युगक्षये (yuga-kṣaye) - at the end of the age;]
(Having many offspring, of short bodies, devoid of good conduct and character, with their sexual organ on the face, women, O king, will become at the end of the age.)
At the end of the age, O king, women will become short-bodied, prolific, devoid of good character and conduct, and have their sexual organ on their face. (03-186-35)
अट्टशूला जनपदाः शिवशूलाश्चतुष्पथाः। केशशूलाः स्त्रियो राजन्भविष्यन्ति युगक्षये ॥०३-१८६-३६॥
aṭṭaśūlā janapadāḥ śivaśūlāścatuṣpathāḥ। keśaśūlāḥ striyo rājanbhaviṣyanti yugakṣaye ॥03-186-36॥
[अट्टशूला (aṭṭaśūlā) - those bearing large spikes; जनपदाः (janapadāḥ) - regions; शिवशूला (śivaśūlā) - those with auspicious spikes; चतुष्पथाः (catuṣpathāḥ) - crossroads; केशशूला (keśaśūlāḥ) - having hair like spikes; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - they will become; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of the age;]

alpakṣīrās tathā gāvo bhaviṣyanti janādhipa। alpapuṣpaphalāś cāpi pādapā bahuvāyasāḥ ॥03-186-37॥
[अल्पक्षीराः (alpakṣīrāḥ) - having little milk; तथा (tathā) - likewise; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people; अल्पपुष्पफलाः (alpapuṣpaphalāḥ) - having few flowers and fruits; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पादपाः (pādapāḥ) - trees; बहुवायसाः (bahuvāyasāḥ) - having many crows;]
(Having little milk likewise cows will be, O lord of people. Having few flowers and fruits also trees (will be), having many crows. (03-186-37))
O lord of people, likewise cows will yield little milk. Also, trees will bear few flowers and fruits, and will be infested with many crows. (03-186-37)
ब्रह्मवध्यावलिप्तानां तथा मिथ्याभिशंसिनाम्। नृपाणां पृथिवीपाल प्रतिगृह्णन्ति वै द्विजाः ॥०३-१८६-३८॥
brahmavadhyāvaliptānāṃ tathā mithyābhiśaṃsinām। nṛpāṇāṃ pṛthivīpāla pratigṛhṇanti vai dvijāḥ॥03-186-38॥
[ब्रह्मवध्यावलिप्तानाम् (brahmavadhyāvaliptānām) - of those proud (avaricious) who have killed a Brāhmaṇa; तथा (tathā) - and; मिथ्याभिशंसिनाम् (mithyābhiśaṃsinām) - of those who bear false witness; नृपाणाम् (nṛpāṇām) - of kings; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivīpāla) - O protector of the earth; प्रतिगृह्णन्ति (pratigṛhṇanti) - accept; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - the twice-born (Brāhmaṇas);]

लोभमोहपरीताश्च मिथ्याधर्मध्वजावृताः। भिक्षार्थं पृथिवीपाल चञ्चूर्यन्ते द्विजैर्दिशः ॥०३-१८६-३९॥
lobha-moha-parītāś ca mithyā-dharma-dhvajā-vṛtāḥ। bhikṣārthaṃ pṛthivīpāla cañcūryante dvijair diśaḥ॥03-186-39॥
[लोभ-मोह-परीताः (lobha-moha-parītāḥ) - overcome by greed and delusion; च (ca) - and; मिथ्या-धर्म-ध्वज-अवृताः (mithyā-dharma-dhvajā-vṛtāḥ) - covered with the false flag of righteousness; भिक्षार्थम् (bhikṣārtham) - for the sake of alms; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivīpāla) - kings; चञ्चूर्यन्ते (cañcūryante) - are wandered; द्विजैः (dvijaiḥ) - by twice-borns (Brahmins); दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions;]
(Overcome by greed and delusion and covered with the false flag of righteousness, for the sake of alms, kings are wandered by Brahmins through the directions.)
Overcome by greed and delusion, and cloaked in false righteousness, the Brahmins, seeking alms, roam the lands of kings in all directions. (03-186-39)
करभारभयात्पुंसो गृहस्थाः परिमोषकाः। मुनिच्छद्माकृतिच्छन्ना वाणिज्यमुपजीवते ॥०३-१८६-४०॥
karabhārabhayāt puṃso gṛhasthāḥ parimoṣakāḥ। municchad-mākṛti-cchannā vāṇijyam upajīvate ॥03-186-40॥
[कर-भार-भयात् (kara-bhāra-bhayāt) - from fear of the burden of taxes; पुंसः (puṃsaḥ) - of a man; गृहस्थाः (gṛhasthāḥ) - householders; परिमोषकाः (parimoṣakāḥ) - thieves; मुनि-च्छद्म-आकृति-च्छन्नाः (muni-cchadma-ākṛti-cchannāḥ) - disguised in the appearance of ascetics; वाणिज्यम् (vāṇijyam) - trade; उपजीवते (upajīvate) - earn a livelihood;]
(From fear of the burden of taxes, of a man, householders, thieves, disguised in the appearance of ascetics, trade, earn a livelihood.)
Out of fear of the burden of taxes, householders and thieves, concealing themselves in the guise of ascetics, make their living by engaging in trade. (03-186-40)
मिथ्या च नखरोमाणि धारयन्ति नरास्तदा। अर्थलोभान्नरव्याघ्र वृथा च ब्रह्मचारिणः ॥०३-१८६-४१॥
mithyā ca nakha-romāṇi dhārayanti narās tadā। artha-lobhān nara-vyāghra vṛthā ca brahmacāriṇaḥ॥03-186-41॥
[मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsehood; च (ca) - and; नखरोमाणि (nakha-romāṇi) - nails and hair; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - wear; नराः (narāḥ) - men; तदा (tadā) - then; अर्थलोभात् (artha-lobhāt) - from greed for wealth; नरव्याघ्र (nara-vyāghra) - O tiger among men; वृथा (vṛthā) - vainly; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मचारिणः (brahmacāriṇaḥ) - brahmacārins (celibate students);]
(And men then wear nails and hair falsely; O tiger among men, and brahmacārins vainly (do so) from greed for wealth.)
At that time, men falsely grow their nails and hair, O tiger among men, and celibate students do so in vain due to greed for wealth. (03-186-41)
आश्रमेषु वृथाचाराः पानपा गुरुतल्पगाः। ऐहलौकिकमीहन्ते मांसशोणितवर्धनम् ॥०३-१८६-४२॥
āśrameṣu vṛthācārāḥ pānapā gurutalpagāḥ। aihalaukamīhante māṁsaśoṇitavardhanam ॥03-186-42॥
[आश्रमेषु (āśrameṣu) - in the āśramas (sacred residences); वृथाचाराः (vṛthācārāḥ) - of vain conduct; पानपा (pānapā) - drinkers of liquor; गुरुतल्पगाः (gurutalpagāḥ) - those going to a teacher's bed (adulterers with the preceptor's wife); ऐहलौकिकम् (aihalaukikam) - worldly matter; ईहन्ते (īhante) - they pursue; मांसशोणितवर्धनम् (māṁsaśoṇitavardhanam) - promotion of flesh and blood;]
(In the āśramas, of vain conduct, drinkers of liquor, those who go to the teacher's bed, pursue worldly matters, promotion of flesh and blood.)
Those of vain conduct, drinkers of liquor, those who approach the teacher's wife, in the āśramas pursue only worldly matters, fostering the increase of flesh and blood. (03-186-42)
बहुपाषण्डसङ्कीर्णाः परान्नगुणवादिनः। आश्रमा मनुजव्याघ्र न भवन्ति युगक्षये ॥०३-१८६-४३॥
bahu-pāṣaṇḍa-saṅkīrṇāḥ parānna-guṇa-vādināḥ। āśramā manuja-vyāghra na bhavanti yuga-kṣaye॥03-186-43॥
[बहुपाषण्डसङ्कीर्णाः (bahu-pāṣaṇḍa-saṅkīrṇāḥ) - mixed with many heretics; परान्नगुणवादिनः (parānna-guṇa-vādināḥ) - praising the merit of another's food; आश्रमा (āśramāḥ) - āśramas; मनुजव्याघ्र (manuja-vyāghra) - O tiger among men; न (na) - not; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; युगक्षये (yuga-kṣaye) - at the end of the age;]
(Mixed with many heretics, praising the merit of another's food, āśramas, O tiger among men, do not become at the end of the age.)
O tiger among men, at the end of the age, āśramas, having become mixed with many heretics and praisers of the merit of another's food, no longer exist. (03-186-43)
यथर्तुवर्षी भगवान्न तथा पाकशासनः। न तदा सर्वबीजानि सम्यग्रोहन्ति भारत ॥ अधर्मफलमत्यर्थं तदा भवति चानघ ॥०३-१८६-४४॥
yathārtuvarṣī bhagavān na tathā pākaśāsanaḥ। na tadā sarvabījāni samyag rohanti bhārata ॥ adharma-phalam atyarthaṃ tadā bhavati ca anagha ॥03-186-44॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; ऋतु-वर्षी (ṛtu-varṣī) - seasonal-rain-giver; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; पाक-शासनः (pāka-śāsanaḥ) - Indra (the Lord of ripening); न (na) - not; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्व-बीजानि (sarva-bījāni) - all seeds; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; रोहन्ति (rohanti) - sprout; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अधर्म-फलम् (adharma-phalam) - fruit of unrighteousness; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; तदा (tadā) - then; भवति (bhavati) - arises; च (ca) - and; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(As a Lord who gives rain according to the season, not so is Indra. Then, all seeds do not sprout properly, O Bhārata. The fruit of unrighteousness, exceedingly, then arises too, O sinless one. (03-186-44))
Just as a Lord provides rain in proper season, but Indra does not do so; at that time, O Bhārata, all seeds do not sprout properly. Then, O sinless one, the fruit of unrighteousness arises in excess. (03-186-44)
तथा च पृथिवीपाल यो भवेद्धर्मसंयुतः। अल्पायुः स हि मन्तव्यो न हि धर्मोऽस्ति कश्चन ॥०३-१८६-४५॥
tathā ca pṛthivīpāla yo bhaved dharmasaṃyutaḥ। alpāyuḥ sa hi mantavyo na hi dharmo'sti kaścana॥03-186-45॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that manner; similarly; च (ca) - and; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivīpāla) - king (protector of the earth); यः (yaḥ) - who; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; he is; धर्मसंयुतः (dharmasaṃyutaḥ) - endowed with dharma; associated with righteousness; अल्पायुः (alpāyuḥ) - of short life; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; मन्तव्यः (mantavyaḥ) - is to be regarded; should be considered; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; righteousness; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; anything;]
(In that manner and, king who may be endowed with dharma, of short life, he indeed is to be considered, for not indeed dharma exists in anyone.)
Similarly, a king who may be endowed with dharma and has a short life is to be considered so, for in one who lacks dharma, there is truly no value. (03-186-45)
भूयिष्ठं कूटमानैश्च पण्यं विक्रीणते जनाः। वणिजश्च नरव्याघ्र बहुमाया भवन्त्युत ॥०३-१८६-४६॥
bhūyiṣṭhaṁ kūṭamānaiś ca paṇyaṁ vikrīṇate janāḥ। vaṇijaś ca naravyāghra bahumāyā bhavanty uta॥03-186-46॥
[भूयिष्ठम् (bhūyiṣṭham) - mostly; mainly; कूटमानैः (kūṭamānaiḥ) - with false measures; च (ca) - and; पण्यं (paṇyam) - goods; commodity; विक्रीणते (vikrīṇate) - sells; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - merchants; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; बहुमाया (bahumāyā) - very deceitful; full of trickery; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; become; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Mostly with false measures and goods people sell; and merchants, O tiger among men, are very deceitful indeed.)
People mostly sell goods with false measures; and merchants, O tiger among men, are very deceitful indeed. (3-186-46)
धर्मिष्ठाः परिहीयन्ते पापीयान्वर्धते जनः। धर्मस्य बलहानिः स्यादधर्मश्च बली तथा ॥०३-१८६-४७॥
dharmiṣṭhāḥ parihīyante pāpīyān vardhate janaḥ। dharmasya balahāniḥ syād adharmaś ca balī tathā॥03-186-47॥
[धर्मिष्ठाः (dharmiṣṭhāḥ) - the most righteous; परिहीयन्ते (parihīyante) - diminish; पापीयान् (pāpīyān) - the more wicked; वर्धते (vardhate) - increases; जनः (janaḥ) - people; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; बलहानिः (balahāniḥ) - loss of strength; स्यात् (syāt) - would result; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - adharma; च (ca) - and; बली (balī) - powerful; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(The most righteous diminish; the more wicked people increases. Of dharma, loss of strength would result, and adharma likewise (becomes) powerful.)
The most righteous decline while wicked people increase. The strength of dharma is lost, and adharma likewise becomes powerful. (03-186-47)
अल्पायुषो दरिद्राश्च धर्मिष्ठा मानवास्तदा। दीर्घायुषः समृद्धाश्च विधर्माणो युगक्षये ॥०३-१८६-४८॥
alpāyuṣo daridrāś ca dharmiṣṭhā mānavās tadā। dīrghāyuṣaḥ samṛddhāś ca vidharmāṇo yugakṣaye ॥03-186-48॥
[अल्पायुषः (alpāyuṣaḥ) - short-lived; दरिद्राः (daridrāḥ) - poor; च (ca) - and; धर्मिष्ठाः (dharmiṣṭhāḥ) - righteous; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; तदा (tadā) - then; दीर्घायुषः (dīrghāyuṣaḥ) - long-lived; समृद्धाः (samṛddhāḥ) - prosperous; च (ca) - and; विधर्माणः (vidharmāṇaḥ) - unrighteous; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of the age;]
(Short-lived, poor and righteous are the humans then; long-lived and prosperous and unrighteous at the end of the age.)
At the end of the age, humans who are righteous become short-lived and poor, while those who are unrighteous become long-lived and prosperous. (03-186-48)
अधर्मिष्ठैरुपायैश्च प्रजा व्यवहरन्त्युत। सञ्चयेनापि चाल्पेन भवन्त्याढ्या मदान्विताः ॥०३-१८६-४९॥
adharmiṣṭhair upāyaiś ca prajā vyavaharanti uta। sañcayena api ca alpena bhavanti āḍhyā mada-anvitāḥ॥03-186-49॥
[अधर्मिष्ठैः (adharmiṣṭhaiḥ) - by most unrighteous; उपायैः (upāyaiḥ) - means; च (ca) - and; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - people; व्यवहरन्ति (vyavaharanti) - act; उत (uta) - indeed; सञ्चयेन (sañcayena) - by accumulation; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; अल्पेन (alpena) - small; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; आढ्याः (āḍhyāḥ) - wealthy; मदान्विताः (mada-anvitāḥ) - endowed with pride;]
(By most unrighteous means and people indeed act. By even a small accumulation also, they become wealthy, endowed with pride.)
People act by most unrighteous means; and even with a small accumulation, they become wealthy and proud. (3-186-49)
धनं विश्वासतो न्यस्तं मिथो भूयिष्ठशो नराः। हर्तुं व्यवसिता राजन्मायाचारसमन्विताः ॥०३-१८६-५०॥
dhanaṃ viśvāsato nyastaṃ mitho bhūyiṣṭhaśo narāḥ। hartuṃ vyavasitā rājan māyācārasamanvitāḥ॥03-186-50॥
[धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; विश्वासतः (viśvāsataḥ) - on trust; न्यस्तं (nyastaṃ) - deposited; मिथः (mitho) - among one another; भूयिष्ठशः (bhūyiṣṭhaśaḥ) - mostly; नराः (narāḥ) - men; हर्तुं (hartuṃ) - to take away; व्यवसिता (vyavasitā) - resolved; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मायाचारसमन्विताः (māyācārasamanvitāḥ) - endowed with deceitful conduct;]
(Wealth deposited on trust among one another, mostly men, to take away, resolved, O king, endowed with deceitful conduct.)
O king, men, mostly, who have deposited wealth with each other in trust, are resolved to take it away, being endowed with deceitful conduct. (03-186-50)
पुरुषादानि सत्त्वानि पक्षिणोऽथ मृगास्तथा। नगराणां विहारेषु चैत्येष्वपि च शेरते ॥०३-१८६-५१॥
puruṣādāni sattvāni pakṣiṇo'tha mṛgās tathā। nagarāṇāṁ vihāreṣu caityeṣv api ca śerate॥03-186-51॥
[पुरुषादानि (puruṣādāni) - man-eaters; (creatures devouring humans); सत्त्वानि (sattvāni) - beings; entities; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds; अथ (atha) - and; then; मृगाः (mṛgāḥ) - deer; wild animals; तथा (tathā) - likewise; नगराणां (nagarāṇāṃ) - of cities; विहारेषु (vihāreṣu) - in leisure-places; in gardens; in pleasure-grounds; चैत्येषु (caityeṣu) - in shrines; in sanctuaries; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; शेरते (śerate) - lie down; rest; sleep;]
(Man-eaters beings, birds and likewise deer; of cities in pleasure-grounds, in shrines also and lie down.)
Man-eating beings, birds, and likewise animals rest or take shelter in the pleasure-grounds and shrines of cities. (03-186-51)
सप्तवर्षाष्टवर्षाश्च स्त्रियो गर्भधरा नृप। दशद्वादशवर्षाणां पुंसां पुत्रः प्रजायते ॥०३-१८६-५२॥
saptavarṣāṣṭavarṣāś ca striyo garbhadharā nṛpa। daśadvādaśavarṣāṇāṃ puṃsāṃ putraḥ prajāyate ॥03-186-52॥
[सप्तवर्ष (sapta-varṣa) - seven years; अष्टवर्षाश्च (aṣṭavarṣāś ca) - eight years and; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; गर्भधरा (garbhadharā) - become capable of conceiving; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; दशद्वादशवर्षाणां (daśa-dvādaśa-varṣāṇāṃ) - of ten and twelve year olds; पुंसां (puṃsām) - of boys; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; प्रजायते (prajāyate) - is born;]
(Seven-year, eight-year and women become capable of conceiving, O king. Of ten- and twelve-year-old boys a son is born.)
O king, girls of seven or eight years become capable of conceiving; for boys of ten or twelve years, a son is born. (03-186-52)
भवन्ति षोडशे वर्षे नराः पलितिनस्तथा। आयुःक्षयो मनुष्याणां क्षिप्रमेव प्रपद्यते ॥०३-१८६-५३॥
bhavanti ṣoḍaśe varṣe narāḥ palitinastathā। āyuḥkṣayo manuṣyāṇāṃ kṣiprameva prapadyate॥03-186-53॥
[भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; षोडशे (ṣoḍaśe) - in the sixteenth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; नराः (narāḥ) - men; पलितिनः (palitinaḥ) - gray-haired; तथा (tathā) - thus; आयुःक्षयः (āyuḥkṣayaḥ) - decline of lifespan; मनुष्याणां (manuṣyāṇāṃ) - of men; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - befalls;]
(Become in the sixteenth year men gray-haired thus; the decline of lifespan of men quickly indeed befalls.)
Thus, men become gray-haired in their sixteenth year; the decline of the lifespan of men quickly indeed befalls. (03-186-53)
क्षीणे युगे महाराज तरुणा वृद्धशीलिनः। तरुणानां च यच्छीलं तद्वृद्धेषु प्रजायते ॥०३-१८६-५४॥
kṣīṇe yuge mahārāja taruṇā vṛddhaśīlinaḥ। taruṇānāṃ ca yatśīlaṃ tadvṛddheṣu prajāyate ॥03-186-54॥
[क्षीणे (kṣīṇe) - when diminished; (when) declined; युगे (yuge) - in the age; (in the) yuga; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तरुणा (taruṇā) - by the young; (the) young; वृद्धशीलिनः (vṛddhaśīlinaḥ) - having the conduct of the old; possessing the qualities of old men; तरुणानां (taruṇānāṃ) - of the young; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; what; शीलं (śīlaṃ) - conduct; nature; तत् (tat) - that; वृद्धेषु (vṛddheṣu) - in the elders; in the old; प्रजायते (prajāyate) - arises; comes into being;]
(When the age is diminished, O great king, the young possess the conduct of the old; and the conduct which is of the young, that arises among the old.)
O great king, when the age declines, the young adopt the ways of the old, and the conduct of the young appears among the old. (3-186-54)
विपरीतास्तदा नार्यो वञ्चयित्वा रहः पतीन्। व्युच्चरन्त्यपि दुःशीला दासैः पशुभिरेव च ॥०३-१८६-५५॥
viparītāḥ tadā nāryo vañcayitvā rahaḥ patīn। vyuccaranti api duḥśīlā dāsaiḥ paśubhir eva ca ॥03-186-55॥
[विपरीताः (viparītāḥ) - perverse; तदा (tadā) - then; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; वञ्चयित्वा (vañcayitvā) - having deceived; रहः (rahaḥ) - in secret; पतीन् (patīn) - husbands; व्युच्चरन्ति (vyuccaranti) - they go astray; अपि (api) - also; दुःशीला (duḥśīlā) - of bad conduct; दासैः (dāsaiḥ) - with servants; पशुभिः (paśubhiḥ) - with beasts; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Perverse then women, having deceived in secret husbands, go astray also, of bad conduct, with servants, with beasts indeed and.)
At that time, perverse women of bad conduct, having deceived their husbands in secret, go astray even with servants and indeed with beasts. (03-186-55)
तस्मिन्युगसहस्रान्ते सम्प्राप्ते चायुषः क्षये। अनावृष्टिर्महाराज जायते बहुवार्षिकी ॥०३-१८६-५६॥
tasmin yugahasrānte samprāpte cāyuṣaḥ kṣaye। anāvṛṣṭir mahārāja jāyate bahuvārṣikī॥03-186-56॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युगसहस्रान्ते (yuga-sahasra-ānte) - at the end of a thousand yugas; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; च (ca) - and; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of the lifespan; क्षये (kṣaye) - in the decline; अनावृष्टिः (anāvṛṣṭiḥ) - drought; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; जायते (jāyate) - arises; बहुवार्षिकी (bahuvārṣikī) - lasting for many years;]
(In that, at the end of a thousand yugas, having arrived and of the lifespan in decline, drought, O great king, arises lasting for many years.)
O great king, when at the end of a thousand yugas, as lifespans decline, a drought lasting for many years arises. (03-186-56)
ततस्तान्यल्पसाराणि सत्त्वानि क्षुधितानि च। प्रलयं यान्ति भूयिष्ठं पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपते ॥०३-१८६-५७॥
tatas tāny alpa-sārāṇi sattvāṇi kṣudhitāni ca। pralayaṃ yānti bhūyiṣṭhaṃ pṛthivyāṃ pṛthivīpate॥03-186-57॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तानि (tāni) - those; अल्पसाराणि (alpa-sārāṇi) - of little essence; सत्त्वानि (sattvāṇi) - beings; क्षुधितानि (kṣudhitāni) - hungry; च (ca) - and; प्रलयम् (pralayam) - destruction; यान्ति (yānti) - go; भूयिष्ठम् (bhūyiṣṭham) - mostly; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth;]
(Then those beings of little essence and hungry, O lord of the earth, go mostly to destruction on the earth.)
Then, O lord of the earth, those beings of little essence and hungry mostly perish on the earth. (03-186-57)
ततो दिनकरैर्दीप्तैः सप्तभिर्मनुजाधिप। पीयते सलिलं सर्वं समुद्रेषु सरित्सु च ॥०३-१८६-५८॥
tato dinakarair dīptaiḥ saptabhir manujādhipa। pīyate salilaṃ sarvaṃ samudreṣu saritsu ca ॥03-186-58॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दिनकरैः (dinakaraiḥ) - by the suns; दीप्तैः (dīptaiḥ) - by the shining; सप्तभिः (saptabhiḥ) - by the seven; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men; पीयते (pīyate) - is drunk; सलिलं (salilaṃ) - water; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; समुद्रेषु (samudreṣu) - in the oceans; सरित्सु (saritsu) - in the rivers; च (ca) - and;]
(Then, O lord of men, by the seven shining suns, all water in the oceans and in the rivers is drunk.)
Then, O lord of men, by the seven shining suns, all the water of the oceans and rivers is consumed. (03-186-58)
यच्च काष्ठं तृणं चापि शुष्कं चार्द्रं च भारत। सर्वं तद्भस्मसाद्भूतं दृश्यते भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१८६-५९॥
yacca kāṣṭhaṃ tṛṇaṃ cāpi śuṣkaṃ cārdraṃ ca bhārata। sarvaṃ tadbhasmasādbhūtaṃ dṛśyate bharatarṣabha॥03-186-59॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; काष्ठम् (kāṣṭham) - wood; तृणम् (tṛṇam) - grass; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शुष्कम् (śuṣkam) - dry; च (ca) - and; आर्द्रम् (ārdram) - wet; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; भस्मसाद्भूतम् (bhasmasādbhūtam) - having become reduced to ashes; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bhāratas;]
(Which wood and grass and also dry and wet, O Bhārata, all that is seen to have become reduced to ashes, O best of the Bhāratas.)
O Bhārata, all the wood and grass, both dry and wet, you see, O foremost of the Bhāratas—all of it has become mere ashes. (03-186-59)
ततः संवर्तको वह्निर्वायुना सह भारत। लोकमाविशते पूर्वमादित्यैरुपशोषितम् ॥०३-१८६-६०॥

(Then the world-destroying fire with wind together, O Bhārata, the world enters, previously by the suns having been dried up.)

ततः स पृथिवीं भित्त्वा समाविश्य रसातलम्। देवदानवयक्षाणां भयं जनयते महत् ॥०३-१८६-६१॥

(Burning up the world of nāgas and whatever little (there is) here on earth below, O King, (it) destroys all in a moment.)

ततो योजनविंशानां सहस्राणि शतानि च। निर्दहत्यशिवो वायुः स च संवर्तकोऽनलः ॥०३-१८६-६३॥
tato yojanaviṃśānāṃ sahasrāṇi śatāni ca। nirdahaty aśivo vāyuḥ sa ca saṃvartako'nalaḥ॥03-186-63॥

(From then, of twenty yojanas, thousands and hundreds, the inauspicious wind completely burns, and that world-destroying fire.)
Thereafter, for hundreds and thousands of units of twenty yojanas, the inauspicious wind burns everything, and that is the world-destroying fire. (03-186-63)
सदेवासुरगन्धर्वं सयक्षोरगराक्षसम्। ततो दहति दीप्तः स सर्वमेव जगद्विभुः ॥०३-१८६-६४॥
sadevāsuragandharvaṃ sayakṣoragarākṣasam। tato dahati dīptaḥ sa sarvameva jagadvibhuḥ ॥03-186-64॥

ततो गजकुलप्रख्यास्तडिन्मालाविभूषिताः। उत्तिष्ठन्ति महामेघा नभस्यद्भुतदर्शनाः ॥०३-१८६-६५॥
tato gajakula-prakhyāḥ taḍinmālā-vibhūṣitāḥ। uttiṣṭhanti mahāmeghā nabhasy adbhutadarśanāḥ॥03-186-65॥

ततः समुद्रः स्वां वेलामतिक्रामति भारत। पर्वताश्च विशीर्यन्ते मही चापि विशीर्यते ॥०३-१८६-७४॥
tataḥ samudraḥ svāṃ velām atikrāmati bhārata। parvatāś ca viśīryante mahī cāpi viśīryate ॥03-186-74॥

(Then the ocean crosses its own boundary, O Bhārata; and the mountains are shattered, and even the earth is shattered.)

tasminn-ekārṇave ghore naṣṭe sthāvarajaṅgame। naṣṭe devāsuragaṇe yakṣarākṣasavarjite ॥03-186-77॥

(In that one terrible ocean, with immobile and mobile beings destroyed, with the group of devas and asuras destroyed, excluded of yakṣas and rākṣasas.)

nirmanuṣye mahīpāla niḥśvāpadamahīruhe। anantarikṣe loke'smin bhramāmyeko'hamādṛtaḥ॥03-186-78॥

(Devoid of humans, O protector of the earth, without beasts, without trees, without sky, in this world I wander alone, I, honored.)

ततः सुदीर्घं गत्वा तु प्लवमानो नराधिप। श्रान्तः क्वचिन्न शरणं लभाम्यहमतन्द्रितः ॥०३-१८६-८०॥
tataḥ sudīrghaṃ gatvā tu plavamāno narādhipa| śrāntaḥ kvacinna śaraṇaṃ labhāmyahamatandritaḥ ॥03-186-80॥

(Then, having gone a very long (distance), but leaping, O king, tired, somewhere not refuge I obtain, I, untiring.)
Then, O king, having leapt for a very long distance, though untiring, I am tired and do not find refuge anywhere. (03-186-80)
ततः कदाचित्पश्यामि तस्मिन्सलिलसम्प्लवे। न्यग्रोधं सुमहान्तं वै विशालं पृथिवीपते ॥०३-१८६-८१॥
tataḥ kadācit paśyāmi tasmin salila-samplave। nyagrodhaṃ sumahāntaṃ vai viśālaṃ pṛthivīpate ॥03-186-81॥

(Then once I see in that water-flood a banyan tree, very great indeed, wide, O lord of the earth.)

उपविष्टं महाराज पूर्णेन्दुसदृशाननम्। फुल्लपद्मविशालाक्षं बालं पश्यामि भारत ॥०३-१८६-८३॥
upaviṣṭaṃ mahārāja pūrṇendusadṛśānanam। phullapadmaviśālākṣaṃ bālaṃ paśyāmi bhārata ॥03-186-83॥

O great king, O Bhārata, I see a boy seated, whose face is like the full moon and whose eyes are large like blossomed lotuses. (03-186-83)
ततो मे पृथिवीपाल विस्मयः सुमहानभूत्। कथं त्वयं शिशुः शेते लोके नाशमुपागते ॥०३-१८६-८४॥
tato me pṛthivīpāla vismayaḥ sumahān abhūt। kathaṁ tvayaṁ śiśuḥ śete loke nāśam upāgate ॥03-186-84॥

(Then to me, O king, astonishment very great arose. How you, this child, lies in the world when destruction has come.)
Then, O king, I was greatly astonished. How is it that you, this child, are lying in the world when destruction has come? (03-186-84)
तपसा चिन्तयंश्चापि तं शिशुं नोपलक्षये। भूतं भव्यं भविष्यच्च जानन्नपि नराधिप ॥०३-१८६-८५॥
tapasā cintayaṃścāpi taṃ śiśuṃ nopalakṣaye। bhūtaṃ bhavyaṃ bhaviṣyacca jānannapi narādhipa ॥03-186-85॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - reflecting; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तं (tam) - that; शिशुम् (śiśum) - child; न (na) - not; उपलक्षये (upalakṣaye) - I perceive; भूतम् (bhūtam) - past; भव्यम् (bhavyam) - future; भविष्यत् (bhaviṣyat) - about-to-be; च (ca) - and; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O best of men;]
(By austerity and reflecting also that child I do not perceive; past, future, and that which is about to be, knowing even, O best of men.)
O best of men, though I know the past, future, and the time to come, and though I reflect with austerity, I do not perceive that child. (03-186-85)
अतसीपुष्पवर्णाभः श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणः। साक्षाल्लक्ष्म्या इवावासः स तदा प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-१८६-८६॥
atasīpuṣpavarṇābhaḥ śrīvatsakṛtalakṣaṇaḥ। sākṣāllakṣmyā ivāvāsaḥ sa tadā pratibhāti me ॥03-186-86॥
[अतसीपुष्पवर्णाभः (atasīpuṣpavarṇābhaḥ) - possessing the appearance of the color of flax-flower; श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणः (śrīvatsakṛtalakṣaṇaḥ) - marked with the sign made by (the mark called) Śrīvatsa; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; लक्ष्म्या (lakṣmyā) - by Lakṣmī; इव (iva) - as if; आवासः (āvāsaḥ) - abode; सः (saḥ) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me;]

Then that radiant boy with lotus-like eyes, who bore the Śrīvatsa mark, said to me words that were pleasant to hear. (03-186-87)
जानामि त्वा परिश्रान्तं तात विश्रामकाङ्क्षिणम्। मार्कण्डेय इहास्स्व त्वं यावदिच्छसि भार्गव ॥०३-१८६-८८॥
jānāmi tvā pariśrāntaṃ tāta viśrāmakāṅkṣiṇam। mārkaṇḍeya ihāssva tvaṃ yāvadicchasi bhārgava॥03-186-88॥

(I know you, exhausted, dear one, desiring rest. O Markandeya, here dwell you as long as you wish, O descendent of Bhrigu.)

अभ्यन्तरं शरीरं मे प्रविश्य मुनिसत्तम। आस्स्व भो विहितो वासः प्रसादस्ते कृतो मया ॥०३-१८६-८९॥
abhyantaraṃ śarīraṃ me praviśya munisattama। āssva bho vihito vāsaḥ prasādaste kṛto mayā ॥03-186-89॥

(Having entered within my body, O best of sages, please reside, O revered one. The abode has been arranged, your favor has been done by me.)
O best of sages, having entered my body, please reside here, O revered one. I have arranged an abode for you; I have done what is needed for your favor. (03-186-89)
ततो बालेन तेनैवमुक्तस्यासीत्तदा मम। निर्वेदो जीविते दीर्घे मनुष्यत्वे च भारत ॥०३-१८६-९०॥
tato bālena tenaivam-uktasyāsīttadā mama। nirvedo jīvite dīrghe manuṣyatve ca bhārata॥03-186-90॥

(Then by the boy, having been thus spoken, there was for me disenchantment in (regard to) long life and in being human also, O Bhārata.)
Then, after being thus addressed by that boy, O Bhārata, I felt disillusionment with long life and even with being human. (03-186-90)
ततो बालेन तेनास्यं सहसा विवृतं कृतम्। तस्याहमवशो वक्त्रं दैवयोगात्प्रवेशितः ॥०३-१८६-९१॥
tato bālena tenāsyaṃ sahasā vivṛtaṃ kṛtam। tasyāhamavaśo vaktraṃ daivayogātpraveśitaḥ ॥03-186-91॥

(Then by the boy, by him, the mouth was suddenly made opened. His I helplessly mouth by force of fate was caused to enter.)
Then, by that boy, his mouth was suddenly opened, and by the force of fate, I was helplessly made to enter his mouth. (03-186-91)
ततः प्रविष्टस्तत्कुक्षिं सहसा मनुजाधिप। सराष्ट्रनगराकीर्णां कृत्स्नां पश्यामि मेदिनीम् ॥०३-१८६-९२॥
tataḥ praviṣṭas tatkukṣiṁ sahasā manujādhipa। sarāṣṭranagarākīrṇāṁ kṛtsnāṁ paśyāmi medinīm ॥03-186-92॥

(Then having entered that womb suddenly, O king of men, filled with countries and cities, the entire earth I see.)

गङ्गां शतद्रुं सीतां च यमुनामथ कौशिकीम्। चर्मण्वतीं वेत्रवतीं चन्द्रभागां सरस्वतीम् ॥०३-१८६-९३॥
gaṅgāṁ śatadruṁ sītāṁ ca yamunāmatha kauśikīm। carmaṇvatīṁ vetravatīṁ candrabhāgāṁ sarasvatīm ॥03-186-93॥

ततः समुद्रं पश्यामि यादोगणनिषेवितम्। रत्नाकरममित्रघ्न निधानं पयसो महत् ॥०३-१८६-९७॥

(Then I see the sky adorned by the moon and sun, shining with radiances having lustre resembling fire and sun. I see also the earth, O king, adorned with forests.)

यजन्ते हि तदा राजन्ब्राह्मणा बहुभिः सवैः। क्षत्रियाश्च प्रवर्तन्ते सर्ववर्णानुरञ्जने ॥०३-१८६-९९॥
yajante hi tadā rājan brāhmaṇā bahubhiḥ savaiḥ। kṣatriyāś ca pravartante sarvavarṇānurañjane ॥03-186-99॥
[यजन्ते (yajante) - they perform sacrifices; हि (hi) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; सवैः (savaiḥ) - offerings; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; च (ca) - and; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - engage (in activity/efforts); सर्ववर्ण (sarvavarṇa) - all classes (castes); अनुरञ्जने (anurañjane) - in pleasing;]
(They perform sacrifices indeed then, O king, Brāhmaṇas with many offerings; and Kṣatriyas engage in pleasing all classes.)
At that time, O king, Brāhmaṇas indeed performed sacrifices with many offerings, and Kṣatriyas engaged in actions that pleased all classes. (03-186-99)
वैश्याः कृषिं यथान्यायं कारयन्ति नराधिप। शुश्रूषायां च निरता द्विजानां वृषलास्तथा ॥०३-१८६-१००॥
vaiśyāḥ kṛṣiṃ yathānyāyaṃ kārayanti narādhipa। śuśrūṣāyāṃ ca niratā dvijānāṃ vṛṣalās tathā ॥03-186-100॥
[वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; (the third varṇa, merchant/farmer class); कृषिं (kṛṣiṃ) - agriculture; यथा-अन्यायम् (yathā-anyāyam) - according to proper law; as is appropriate; कारयन्ति (kārayanti) - cause to be done; make (someone) do; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; शुश्रूषायां (śuśrūṣāyāṃ) - in service; in attendance; च (ca) - and; निरताः (niratāḥ) - engaged; absorbed; द्विजानाम् (dvijānām) - of Brāhmaṇas; वृषलाः (vṛṣalāḥ) - śūdras; तथा (tathā) - so; likewise;]
(Vaiśyas agriculture according to proper law cause to be done, O king; in service and engaged of Brāhmaṇas, śūdras likewise.)
O king, the Vaiśyas cause agriculture to be done according to proper law, and the śūdras likewise are engaged in service of the Brāhmaṇas. (03-186-100)

(Then, falling down, O king, into the belly of the great-souled one, Himavat and I see Hemakūṭa mountain.)
Then, O king, as I was falling into the belly of the great-souled one, I saw the Himavat and the Hemakūṭa mountains. (03-186-101)
निषधं चापि पश्यामि श्वेतं च रजताचितम्। पश्यामि च महीपाल पर्वतं गन्धमादनम् ॥०३-१८६-१०२॥
niṣadhaṃ cāpi paśyāmi śvetaṃ ca rajatācitam। paśyāmi ca mahīpāla parvataṃ gandhamādanam ॥03-186-102॥

मन्दरं मनुजव्याघ्र नीलं चापि महागिरिम्। पश्यामि च महाराज मेरुं कनकपर्वतम् ॥०३-१८६-१०३॥
mandaraṃ manujavyāghra nīlaṃ cāpi mahāgirim। paśyāmi ca mahārāja meruṃ kanakaparvatam॥03-186-103॥

mahendraṃ caiva paśyāmi vindhyaṃ ca girimuttamam| malayaṃ cāpi paśyāmi pāriyātraṃ ca parvatam ||03-186-104||

एते चान्ये च बहवो यावन्तः पृथिवीधराः। तस्योदरे मया दृष्टाः सर्वरत्नविभूषिताः ॥०३-१८६-१०५॥
ete cānye ca bahavo yāvantaḥ pṛthivī-dharāḥ। tasyodare mayā dṛṣṭāḥ sarva-ratna-vibhūṣitāḥ ॥03-186-105॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; यावन्तः (yāvantaḥ) - as many as; पृथिवीधराः (pṛthivī-dharāḥ) - earth-holders; तस्य (tasya) - of him; उदरे (udare) - in the belly; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - seen; सर्वरत्नविभूषिताः (sarva-ratna-vibhūṣitāḥ) - adorned with all jewels;]
(These and also others, and many, as many as earth-holders, in his belly, by me, were seen, adorned with all jewels.)
These and the other many earth-holders, as many as there are, I saw in his belly, all adorned with jewels. (03-186-105)
सिंहान्व्याघ्रान्वराहांश्च नागांश्च मनुजाधिप। पृथिव्यां यानि चान्यानि सत्त्वानि जगतीपते ॥ तानि सर्वाण्यहं तत्र पश्यन्पर्यचरं तदा ॥०३-१८६-१०६॥
siṃhān vyāghrān varāhāṃś ca nāgāṃś ca manujādhipa। pṛthivyāṃ yāni ca anyāni sattvāni jagatīpate ॥ tāni sarvāṇi ahaṃ tatra paśyan paryacaram tadā ॥03-186-106॥
[सिंहान् (siṃhān) - lions; व्याघ्रान् (vyāghrān) - tigers; वराहान् (varāhān) - boars; च (ca) - and; नागान् (nAgān) - serpents; च (ca) - and; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; यानि (yāni) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; सत्त्वानि (sattvāni) - creatures; जगतीपते (jagatīpate) - O lord of the earth; तानि (tāni) - those; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अहम् (aham) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; पर्यचरम् (paryacaram) - wandered; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Lions, tigers, boars, and serpents, O lord of men, and whatever other creatures there are on earth, O lord of the earth, seeing all those there, I wandered then.)
O lord of men, I wandered there seeing lions, tigers, boars, serpents, and all other creatures that are on earth, O ruler of the world. (03-186-106)
कुक्षौ तस्य नरव्याघ्र प्रविष्टः सञ्चरन्दिशः। शक्रादींश्चापि पश्यामि कृत्स्नान्देवगणांस्तथा ॥०३-१८६-१०७॥
kukṣau tasya naravyāghra praviṣṭaḥ sañcaran diśaḥ। śakrādīṁś cāpi paśyāmi kṛtsnān devagaṇāṁs tathā ॥03-186-107॥
[कुक्षौ (kukṣau) - in the belly; तस्य (tasya) - his; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - having entered; सञ्चरन् (sañcaran) - wandering; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; शक्रादीन् (śakrādīn) - Indra and others; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; कृत्स्नान् (kṛtsnān) - all; देवगणान् (devagaṇān) - hosts of gods; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(In the belly of him, O tiger among men, having entered, wandering the directions, Indra and others also I see, all the hosts of gods likewise.)
O tiger among men, having entered his belly and roaming about the directions, I also see Indra and the other gods, all the hosts of deities likewise. (3-186-107)
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो यक्षानृषींश्चैव महीपते। दैत्यदानवसङ्घांश्च कालेयांश्च नराधिप ॥ सिंहिकातनयांश्चापि ये चान्ये सुरशत्रवः ॥०३-१८६-१०८॥
gandharvāpsaraso yakṣān ṛṣīṃś caiva mahīpate | daityadānavasaṅghāṃś ca kāleyāṃś ca narādhipa || siṃhikatnayaṃś cāpi ye caanye suraśatravaḥ ||03-186-108||
[गन्धर्वाप्सरसः (गन्धर्व-अप्सरसः) (gandharva-apsarasaḥ) - gandharvas and apsarases; यक्षान् (यक्षान्) (yakṣān) - yakṣas; ऋषीन् (ऋषीन्) (ṛṣīn) - ṛṣis; च (च) (ca) - and; एव (एव) (eva) - indeed; महीपते (मही-पते) (mahī-pate) - O lord of the earth; दैत्यदानवसङ्घान् (दैत्य-दानव-सङ्घान्) (daitya-dānava-saṅghān) - hosts of daityas and dānavas; च (च) (ca) - and; कालेयान् (कालेयान्) (kāleyān) - kāleyas; च (च) (ca) - and; नराधिप (नर-अधिप) (nara-adhipa) - O king; सिंहिकातनयान् (सिंहिका-तनयान्) (siṃhikā-tanayān) - sons of Siṃhikā; च (च) (ca) - and; अपि (अपि) (api) - also; ये (ये) (ye) - who; च (च) (ca) - and; अन्ये (अन्ये) (anye) - others; सुरशत्रवः (सुर-शत्रवः) (sura-śatravaḥ) - enemies of the gods;]
(Gandharvas and apsarases, yakṣas, and ṛṣis indeed, O lord of the earth; hosts of daityas and dānavas, and kāleyas, O king; sons of Siṃhikā also, and others who are enemies of the gods.)
O king, (all) Gandharvas, apsarases, yakṣas, ṛṣis, daityas, dānavas, hosts of kāleyas, sons of Siṃhikā, and all other enemies of the gods (were there). (03-186-108)
यच्च किञ्चिन्मया लोके दृष्टं स्थावरजङ्गमम्। तदपश्यमहं सर्वं तस्य कुक्षौ महात्मनः ॥ फलाहारः प्रविचरन्कृत्स्नं जगदिदं तदा ॥०३-१८६-१०९॥
yacca kiñcin-mayā loke dṛṣṭaṃ sthāvara-jaṅgamam। tad apaśyam ahaṃ sarvaṃ tasya kukṣau mahātmanaḥ॥ phalāhāraḥ pravicaran kṛtsnaṃ jagad idaṃ tadā॥03-186-109॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; मया (mayā) - by me; लोके (loke) - in the world; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvara-jaṅgamam) - immovable and movable (beings); तत् (tat) - that; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; अहम् (aham) - I; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कुक्षौ (kukṣau) - in the belly; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; फलाहारः (phalāhāraḥ) - fruit-eater; प्रविचरन् (pravicaran) - wandering about; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; जगत् (jagat) - world; इदम् (idam) - this; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Whatever and anything by me in the world seen, immovable and movable, that I saw all in the belly of him, the great soul. The fruit-eater, wandering about, the entire world this then.)
Whatever I saw in the world, whether immovable or movable, I saw all of that within the belly of that great soul, while wandering as a fruit-eater throughout this entire world at that time. (3-186-109)
अन्तः शरीरे तस्याहं वर्षाणामधिकं शतम्। न च पश्यामि तस्याहमन्तं देहस्य कुत्रचित् ॥०३-१८६-११०॥
antaḥ śarīre tasyāhaṃ varṣāṇām adhikaṃ śatam। na ca paśyāmi tasyāham antaṃ dehasya kutracit॥03-186-110॥
[अन्तः (antaḥ) - inside; within; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; तस्य (tasya) - of him; of that one; अहम् (aham) - I; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - of years; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - more; exceeding; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तस्य (tasya) - of him; of that one; अहम् (aham) - I; अन्तं (antaṃ) - end; देहस्य (dehasya) - of the body; कुत्रचित् (kutracit) - anywhere; in any place;]
(Within the body of him, I (for) more than a hundred years (have been); and I do not see (by) me the end of the body of him anywhere.)
I have been inside his body for more than a hundred years, yet I do not see any end to his body anywhere. (03-186-110)
सततं धावमानश्च चिन्तयानो विशां पते। आसादयामि नैवान्तं तस्य राजन्महात्मनः ॥०३-१८६-१११॥
satataṃ dhāvamānaś ca cintayāno viśāṃ pate | āsādayāmi naivāntaṃ tasya rājan mahātmanaḥ ||03-186-111||
[सततम् (satatam) - constantly; धावमानः (dhāvamānaḥ) - running; च (ca) - and; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; आसादयामि (āsādayāmi) - I reach; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - at all; अन्तम् (antam) - the limit; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राजन् (rājan) - O king; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Constantly running and thinking, O lord of the people, I do not at all reach the limit of him, O king, of the great-souled one.)
O king, even as I constantly run and ponder, O lord of the people, I cannot reach the limit of that great-souled one. (03-186-111)
ततस्तमेव शरणं गतोऽस्मि विधिवत्तदा। वरेण्यं वरदं देवं मनसा कर्मणैव च ॥०३-१८६-११२॥
tatastam-eva śaraṇaṃ gato'smi vidhivat-tadā। vareṇyaṃ varadaṃ devaṃ manasā karmaṇaiva ca ॥03-186-112॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम्-एव (tam-eva) - him only; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; गतः-अस्मि (gataḥ-asmi) - I have gone; विधिवत्-तदा (vidhivat-tadā) - duly-then; वरेण्यं (vareṇyaṃ) - adorable; वरदं (varadaṃ) - bestower of boons; देवम् (devam) - god; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; कर्मणैव (karmaṇaiva) - by action only; च (ca) - and;]
(Then him only as refuge I have gone duly then; the adorable bestower of boons god by mind and by action only also.)
Then I duly sought refuge only in him at that time — the adorable, boon-bestowing god — by mind and indeed by action as well. (03-186-112)
ततोऽहं सहसा राजन्वायुवेगेन निःसृतः। महात्मनो मुखात्तस्य विवृतात्पुरुषोत्तम ॥०३-१८६-११३॥
tato'haṃ sahasā rājan vāyu-vegena niḥsṛtaḥ। mahā-ātmanaḥ mukhāt tasya vivṛtāt puruṣottama ॥03-186-113॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वायु-वेगेन (vāyu-vegena) - by the force of the wind; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; मुखात् (mukhāt) - from the mouth; तस्य (tasya) - of him; विवृतात् (vivṛtāt) - opened; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men;]
(Then I suddenly, O king, by the force of the wind, emerged from the mouth of that great-souled one, from the opened (mouth), O best of men.)
Then, O king, I suddenly emerged by the force of the wind from the opened mouth of that great-souled being, O best of men. (03-186-113)
ततस्तस्यैव शाखायां न्यग्रोधस्य विशां पते। आस्ते मनुजशार्दूल कृत्स्नमादाय वै जगत् ॥०३-१८६-११४॥
tatas tasyaiva śākhāyāṃ nyagrodhasya viśāṃ pate। āste manujaśārdūla kṛtsnam ādāya vai jagat॥03-186-114॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्य एव (tasya eva) - of that very; शाखायां (śākhāyām) - on the branch; न्यग्रोधस्य (nyagrodhasya) - of the banyan tree; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of men; आस्ते (āste) - (he) sits; मनुजशार्दूल (manujaśārdūla) - O tiger among men; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - all; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; वै (vai) - indeed; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(Then, on that very branch of the banyan tree, O lord of men, (he) sits, O tiger among men, having taken indeed all the world.)
Then, on that very branch of the banyan tree, O lord of men, he sits, O best of men, having indeed gathered up the whole world. (03-186-114)
तेनैव बालवेषेण श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणम्। आसीनं तं नरव्याघ्र पश्याम्यमिततेजसम् ॥०३-१८६-११५॥
tenaiva bālaveṣeṇa śrīvatsakṛtalakṣaṇam। āsīnaṃ taṃ naravyāghra paśyāmyamitatejasam ॥03-186-115॥
[तेनैव (tenaiva) - by that very; बालवेषेण (bālaveṣeṇa) - with the appearance of a boy; श्रीवत्सकृतलक्षणम् (śrīvatsakṛtalakṣaṇam) - having the mark made by Śrīvatsa; आसीनं (āsīnam) - sitting; तं (taṃ) - him; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अमिततेजसम् (amitatejasam) - of immeasurable brilliance;]
(By that very (form), with the appearance of a boy, having the mark made by Śrīvatsa, sitting, him, O tiger among men, I see, of immeasurable brilliance.)
O tiger among men, I see him sitting there, in the same boyish appearance, marked by the Śrīvatsa, possessing immeasurable brilliance. (03-186-115)
ततो मामब्रवीद्वीर स बालः प्रहसन्निव। श्रीवत्सधारी द्युतिमान्पीतवासा महाद्युतिः ॥०३-१८६-११६॥
tato māmabravīdvīra sa bālaḥ prahasanniva। śrīvatsadhārī dyutimānpītavāsā mahādyutiḥ ॥03-186-116॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; वीर (vīra) - hero; सः (saḥ) - he; बालः (bālaḥ) - boy; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; श्रीवत्सधारी (śrīvatsadhārī) - bearing the mark Śrīvatsa; द्युतिमान् (dyutimān) - resplendent; पीतवासा (pītavāsā) - wearing yellow garments; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great brilliance;]
(Then to me spoke, hero, he, boy, smiling as if, Śrīvatsa-bearing, resplendent, wearing yellow garments, of great brilliance.)
Then that boy, bearing the mark of Śrīvatsa, radiant, clad in yellow garments, of great brilliance, smiling as if in sport, said to me, O hero. (03-186-116)
अपीदानीं शरीरेऽस्मिन्मामके मुनिसत्तम। उषितस्त्वं सुविश्रान्तो मार्कण्डेय ब्रवीहि मे ॥०३-१८६-११७॥
apīdānīṃ śarīre'smin māmake munisattama | uṣitas tvaṃ suviśrānto mārkaṇḍeya bravīhi me ॥03-186-117॥
[अपीदानीं (apīdānīṃ) - and now; at this time; शरीरेऽस्मिन् (śarīre'smin) - in this body; मामके (māmake) - my; belonging to me; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages; उषितस्त्वं (uṣitas tvaṃ) - abided you; you have dwelt; सुविश्रान्तः (suviśrāntaḥ) - well-rested; मार्कण्डेय (mārkaṇḍeya) - O Mārkaṇḍeya; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - please tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(And now, in this my body, O best of sages, you being well-rested and having dwelt, O Mārkaṇḍeya, please tell to me.)
O Mārkaṇḍeya, now that you have dwelt in my body and are well-rested, O best of sages, please tell me.
मुहूर्तादथ मे दृष्टिः प्रादुर्भूता पुनर्नवा। यया निर्मुक्तमात्मानमपश्यं लब्धचेतसम् ॥०३-१८६-११८॥
muhūrtād atha me dṛṣṭiḥ prādurbhūtā punarnavā। yayā nirmuktam ātmānam apaśyaṁ labdhacetasaṁ॥03-186-118॥
[मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - from a moment; अथ (atha) - then; मे (me) - my; दृष्टिः (dṛṣṭiḥ) - sight; प्रादुर्भूता (prādurbhūtā) - became manifest; पुनर्नवा (punarnavā) - again new; यया (yayā) - by which; निर्मुक्तम् (nirmuktam) - freed; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; अपश्यं (apaśyaṁ) - I saw; लब्धचेतसम् (labdhacetasam) - with regained consciousness;]
(Then, from a moment, my sight became again new manifest; by which I saw the self freed, with regained consciousness.)
Then, after a moment, my vision became new again; with that vision, I saw myself freed, my awareness restored. (03-186-118)
तस्य ताम्रतलौ तात चरणौ सुप्रतिष्ठितौ। सुजातौ मृदुरक्ताभिरङ्गुलीभिरलङ्कृतौ ॥०३-१८६-११९॥
tasya tāmratalau tāta caraṇau supratiṣṭhitau. sujātau mṛduraktābhiraṅgulībhiralaṅkṛtau ॥03-186-119॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; ताम्रतलौ (tāmratalau) - with coppery soles; तात (tāta) - dear; चरणौ (caraṇau) - feet; सुप्रतिष्ठितौ (supratiṣṭhitau) - well-set; सुजातौ (sujātau) - well-formed; मृदुरक्ताभिः (mṛduraktābhiḥ) - by soft and reddish; अङ्गुलीभिः (aṅgulībhiḥ) - by toes; अलङ्कृतौ (alaṅkṛtau) - adorned;]
(Of him, the feet with coppery soles, dear one, well-set; well-formed, adorned by soft and reddish toes.)
His feet, dear one, are well-set with coppery soles, well-formed and adorned by soft, reddish toes. (03-186-119)
प्रयतेन मया मूर्ध्ना गृहीत्वा ह्यभिवन्दितौ। दृष्ट्वापरिमितं तस्य प्रभावममितौजसः ॥०३-१८६-१२०॥
prayatena mayā mūrdhnā gṛhītvā hy abhivanditau। dṛṣṭvā aparimitaṃ tasya prabhāvam amitaujasaḥ॥03-186-120॥
[प्रयतेन (prayatena) - with effort; मया (mayā) - by me; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - with (my) head; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken (hold); हि (hi) - indeed; अभिवन्दितौ (abhivanditau) - both were saluted, respected; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अपरिमितं (aparimitaṃ) - illimitable, boundless; तस्य (tasya) - of him; प्रभावम् (prabhāvam) - glory, power; अमितौजसः (amitaujasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy;]
(With effort, by me, with (my) head, having taken (hold), indeed, both were saluted; having seen the boundless glory of him of immeasurable energy.)
With effort, I bowed with my head to both of them after taking hold, indeed, having seen the limitless glory of him of immeasurable energy. (03-186-120)
विनयेनाञ्जलिं कृत्वा प्रयत्नेनोपगम्य च। दृष्टो मया स भूतात्मा देवः कमललोचनः ॥०३-१८६-१२१॥
vinayenāñjaliṁ kṛtvā prayatnenopagamya ca। dṛṣṭo mayā sa bhūtātmā devaḥ kamalalocanaḥ ॥03-186-121॥
[विनयेन (vinayena) - with humility; अञ्जलिं (añjalim) - folded hands; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; प्रयत्नेन (prayatnena) - with effort; उपगम्य (upagamya) - having approached; च (ca) - and; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; मया (mayā) - by me; सः (saḥ) - he; भूतात्मा (bhūtātmā) - soul of beings; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; कमललोचनः (kamalalocanaḥ) - lotus-eyed;]
(With humility, having made folded hands, with effort, having approached and, he, the soul of beings, the god, lotus-eyed, was seen by me.)
With humility and folded hands, after approaching with effort, I saw him, the lotus-eyed god, the soul of all beings. (03-186-121)
तमहं प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा नमस्कृत्येदमब्रुवम्। ज्ञातुमिच्छामि देव त्वां मायां चेमां तवोत्तमाम् ॥०३-१८६-१२२॥
tam ahaṃ prāñjalir bhūtvā namaskṛtyedam abruvam। jñātum icchāmi deva tvāṃ māyāṃ cemāṃ tavottamām ॥03-186-122॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - after bowing; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; देव (deva) - O god; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; तव (tava) - your; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme;]
(Him I, with joined palms having become, after bowing, this I spoke. To know I desire, O god, you and this supreme illusion of yours.)
Having approached him with joined palms and bowed, I spoke these words: O god, I wish to know you and this supreme illusion of yours. (03-186-122)
आस्येनानुप्रविष्टोऽहं शरीरं भगवंस्तव। दृष्टवानखिलाँल्लोकान्समस्ताञ्जठरे तव ॥०३-१८६-१२३॥
āsyenānupraviṣṭo'ham śarīraṃ bhagavaṃstava। dṛṣṭavānakhilāṃllokānsamastāñjaṭhare tava॥03-186-123॥
[आस्येन (āsyena) - by the mouth; अनुप्रविष्टः (anupraviṣṭaḥ) - having entered after; अहम् (aham) - I; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; तव (tava) - your; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - have seen; अखिलान् (akhilān) - all; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; समस्तान् (samastān) - entire; जठरे (jaṭhare) - in the belly; तव (tava) - of yours;]
(By the mouth having entered I, body, O Lord, your, have seen all worlds entire in the belly of yours.)
O Lord, having entered your body by the mouth, I have seen all the worlds, entirely, in your belly. (03-186-123)
तव देव शरीरस्था देवदानवराक्षसाः। यक्षगन्धर्वनागाश्च जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ॥०३-१८६-१२४॥
tava deva śarīrasthā devadānavarākṣasāḥ | yakṣagandharvanāgāś ca jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam ॥03-186-124॥
[तव (tava) - of you; देव (deva) - O god; शरीरस्था (śarīrasthā) - residing in the body; देवदानवराक्षसाः (devadānavarākṣasāḥ) - gods, demons, and rākṣasas; यक्षगन्धर्वनागाश्च (yakṣagandharvanāgāś ca) - yakṣas, gandharvas, nāgas and; जगत् (jagat) - the world/universe; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvarajaṅgamam) - immobile and mobile (beings);]
(Of you, O god, residing in the body are gods, demons and rākṣasas, yakṣas, gandharvas, nāgas and the world, immobile and mobile beings.)
O god, within your body reside the gods, demons, rākṣasas, yakṣas, gandharvas, nāgas, and all beings of the universe, both immobile and mobile. (03-186-124)
त्वत्प्रसादाच्च मे देव स्मृतिर्न परिहीयते। द्रुतमन्तः शरीरे ते सततं परिधावतः ॥०३-१८६-१२५॥
tvatprasādāc ca me deva smṛtir na parihīyate. drutam antaḥ śarīre te satataṃ paridhāvataḥ ॥03-186-125॥
[त्वत्-प्रसादात् (tvat-prasādāt) - by your favor; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; देव (deva) - O god; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory; न (na) - not; परिहीयते (parihīyate) - is lost; द्रुतम् (drutam) - quickly; अन्तः (antaḥ) - within; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; ते (te) - of you; सततम् (satatam) - always; परिधावतः (paridhāvataḥ) - running around;]
(By your favor and to me, O god, memory is not lost. Quickly, within the body of you, always running around.)
O god, by your favor my memory is never lost, for within your body it is always swiftly moving everywhere. (03-186-125)
इच्छामि पुण्डरीकाक्ष ज्ञातुं त्वाहमनिन्दित। इह भूत्वा शिशुः साक्षात्किं भवानवतिष्ठते ॥ पीत्वा जगदिदं विश्वमेतदाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥०३-१८६-१२६॥
icchāmi puṇḍarīkākṣa jñātuṃ tvāham-anindita। iha bhūtvā śiśuḥ sākṣāt kiṃ bhavān-avatiṣṭhate॥ pītvā jagad-idaṃ viśvam-etad-ākhyātum-arhasi॥03-186-126॥
[इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; पुण्डरीकाक्ष (puṇḍarīkākṣa) - O lotus-eyed one; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; त्वा (tvā) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; अनिन्दित (anindita) - O sinless one; इह (iha) - here; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - a child; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; किं (kiṃ) - why; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अवतिष्ठते (avatiṣṭhate) - remain; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; जगत् (jagat) - the world; इदं (idaṃ) - this; विश्वम् (viśvam) - the universe; एतत् (etad) - this; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to proclaim; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(I desire, O lotus-eyed one, to know you, O sinless one. Here, having become a child directly, why do you remain? Having drunk this world, this universe, you ought to proclaim this.)
O lotus-eyed, I wish to know you, O sinless one. Why do you, having truly become a child here, remain thus? Having absorbed this entire universe, you ought to reveal this. (03-186-126)
किमर्थं च जगत्सर्वं शरीरस्थं तवानघ। कियन्तं च त्वया कालमिह स्थेयमरिंदम ॥०३-१८६-१२७॥
kimarthaṃ ca jagatsarvaṃ śarīrasthaṃ tavānagha। kiyantaṃ ca tvayā kālam iha stheyam ariṃdama॥03-186-127॥
[किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what reason; च (ca) - and; जगत्सर्वं (jagatsarvam) - all the world; शरीरस्थं (śarīrastham) - abiding in the body; तव (tava) - of you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; कियन्तं (kiyantam) - how much; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कालम् (kālam) - time; इह (iha) - here; स्थेयम् (stheyam) - should it be stayed; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O conqueror of enemies;]
(For what reason and all the world abiding in the body of you, O sinless one? How much and by you time here should it be stayed, O conqueror of enemies? (03-186-127))
O sinless one, for what reason is the entire world abiding in your body? And, O conqueror of enemies, for how long should you remain here? (03-186-127)
एतदिच्छामि देवेश श्रोतुं ब्राह्मणकाम्यया। त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष विस्तरेण यथातथम् ॥ महद्ध्येतदचिन्त्यं च यदहं दृष्टवान्प्रभो ॥०३-१८६-१२८॥
etadicchāmi deveśa śrotuṃ brāhmaṇakāmyayā। tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa vistareṇa yathātatham ॥ mahaddhyetadacintyaṃ ca yadahaṃ dṛṣṭavān prabho ॥03-186-128॥
[एतत् (etad) (etad) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) (icchāmi) - I desire; देवेश (deveśa) (deveśa) - O Lord of the gods; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) (śrotum) - to hear; ब्राह्मणकाम्यया (brāhmaṇakāmyayā) (brāhmaṇakāmyayā) - with the desire for knowledge of Brahman; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) (tvattaḥ) - from you; कमलपत्राक्ष (kamalapatrākṣa) (kamalapatrākṣa) - O lotus-eyed one; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) (vistareṇa) - in detail; यथातथम् (yathātatham) (yathātatham) - as it is; महत् (mahat) (mahat) - great; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etad) (etad) - this; अचिन्त्यम् (acintyam) (acintyam) - inconceivable; च (ca) (ca) - and; यत् (yat) (yat) - which; अहम् (aham) (aham) - I; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) (dṛṣṭavān) - have seen; प्रभो (prabho) (prabho) - O Lord;]
(This I desire, O Lord of the gods, to hear for the desire of knowledge of Brahman, from you, O lotus-eyed one, in detail as it is. Indeed, this is great and inconceivable which I have seen, O Lord.)
O Lord of the gods! I wish to hear about this from you, O lotus-eyed one, in detail and as it truly is, out of a desire for knowledge of Brahman. For truly, what I have seen is great and beyond conception, O Lord. (03-186-128)
इत्युक्तः स मया श्रीमान्देवदेवो महाद्युतिः। सान्त्वयन्मामिदं वाक्यमुवाच वदतां वरः ॥०३-१८६-१२९॥
ityuktaḥ sa mayā śrīmān devadevo mahādyutiḥ। sāntvayan mām idaṃ vākyam uvāca vadatāṃ varaḥ॥03-186-129॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - auspicious; देवदेवः (devadevaḥ) - lord of gods; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great splendor; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - consoling; माम् (mām) - me; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वदतां (vadatām) - of those who speak; वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(Thus having been addressed by me, the auspicious lord of gods of great splendor, consoling me, this speech said, the best of those who speak.)
Thus addressed by me, the auspicious and splendid lord of the gods, consoling me, spoke these words—the best among speakers. (03-186-129)
