God said.
कामं देवापि मां विप्र न विजानन्ति तत्त्वतः। त्वत्प्रीत्या तु प्रवक्ष्यामि यथेदं विसृजाम्यहम् ॥०३-१८७-१॥
kāmaṃ devāpi māṃ vipra na vijānanti tattvataḥ। tvatprītyā tu pravakṣyāmi yathedaṃ visṛjāmyaham ॥03-187-1॥
[कामं (kāmaṃ) - truly; indeed; देवा अपि (devā api) - even the gods; माम् (mām) - me; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; न (na) - not; विजानन्ति (vijānanti) - know; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - in reality; truly; त्वत्प्रीत्या (tvat-prītyā) - out of regard for you; from affection for you; तु (tu) - but; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; यथा (yathā) - as; in what manner; इदम् (idam) - this; विसृजामि (visṛjāmi) - I bring forth; I create; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Truly, even the gods do not know me, O Brāhmaṇa, in reality; but out of regard for you, I shall declare as I bring forth this.)
Indeed, O Brāhmaṇa, even the gods do not truly know me; but out of affection for you, I will explain how I create this. (03-187-1)
पितृभक्तोऽसि विप्रर्षे मां चैव शरणं गतः। अतो दृष्टोऽस्मि ते साक्षाद्ब्रह्मचर्यं च ते महत् ॥०३-१८७-२॥
pitṛbhakto’si viprarṣe māṃ caiva śaraṇaṃ gataḥ। ato dṛṣṭo’smi te sākṣādbrahmacaryaṃ ca te mahat ॥03-187-2॥
[पितृभक्तः (pitṛbhaktaḥ) - devoted to father; असि (asi) - you are; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O brāhmaṇa sage; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; गतः (gataḥ) - you have gone; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - (I am) seen; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - by you; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; ब्रह्मचर्यम् (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(You are devoted to your father, O brāhmaṇa sage, and you have indeed taken refuge in me. Therefore, I am seen directly by you, and your celibacy is great.)
O brāhmaṇa sage, you are devoted to your father and have sought refuge in me; therefore, I have appeared directly before you, and your celibacy is truly great. (03-187-2)
आपो नारा इति प्रोक्ताः सञ्ज्ञानाम कृतं मया। तेन नारायणोऽस्म्युक्तो मम तद्ध्ययनं सदा ॥०३-१८७-३॥
āpo nārā iti proktāḥ sañjñānām kṛtaṃ mayā। tena nārāyaṇo'smyukto mama taddhyayanaṃ sadā ॥03-187-3॥
[आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; नाराः (nārāḥ) - primal waters; इति (iti) - thus; प्रोक्ताः (proktāḥ) - have been stated; सञ्ज्ञानाम् (sañjñānām) - of designations; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; मया (mayā) - by me; तेन (tena) - by that; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; अस्मि (asmi) - am I; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - called; मम (mama) - my; तत् (tat) - that; ध्ययनम् (dhyayanam) - study; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Waters, primal waters, thus have been stated, of designations, made by me. By that, Nārāyaṇa am I called, my that study always (03-187-3).)
The waters are called 'nārāḥ.' This has been stated as a designation made by me. Therefore, I am called Nārāyaṇa. That is ever my meditation. (03-187-3)
अहं नारायणो नाम प्रभवः शाश्वतोऽव्ययः। विधाता सर्वभूतानां संहर्ता च द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-१८७-४॥

अहं विष्णुरहं ब्रह्मा शक्रश्चाहं सुराधिपः। अहं वैश्रवणो राजा यमः प्रेताधिपस्तथा ॥०३-१८७-५॥
ahaṃ viṣṇurahaṃ brahmā śakraścāhaṃ surādhipaḥ। ahaṃ vaiśravaṇo rājā yamaḥ pretādhipastathā॥03-187-5॥

अहं शिवश्च सोमश्च कश्यपश्च प्रजापतिः। अहं धाता विधाता च यज्ञश्चाहं द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-१८७-६॥
ahaṃ śivaś ca somaś ca kaśyapaś ca prajāpatiḥ। ahaṃ dhātā vidhātā ca yajñaś ca ahaṃ dvijottama ॥03-187-6॥

अग्निरास्यं क्षितिः पादौ चन्द्रादित्यौ च लोचने। सदिशं च नभः कायो वायुर्मनसि मे स्थितः ॥०३-१८७-७॥
agnirāsyaṁ kṣitiḥ pādau candrādityau ca locane| sadiśaṁ ca nabhaḥ kāyo vāyurmanasi me sthitaḥ॥03-187-7॥
[अग्नि: (अग्नि:) (agniḥ) - fire; आस्यं (आस्यं) (āsyaṁ) - mouth; क्षितिः (क्षितिः) (kṣitiḥ) - earth; पादौ (पादौ) (pādau) - feet; चन्द्रादित्यौ (चन्द्र-अदित्यौ) (candra-adityau) - moon and sun; च (च) (ca) - and; लोचने (लोचने) (locane) - eyes; सदिशं (सदिशं) (sadiśaṁ) - with directions; च (च) (ca) - and; नभः (नभः) (nabhaḥ) - sky; कायः (कायः) (kāyaḥ) - body; वायुः (वायुः) (vāyuḥ) - air; मनसि (मनसि) (manasi) - in mind; मे (मे) (me) - my; स्थितः (स्थितः) (sthitaḥ) - abides;]
(Fire is (my) mouth; earth (my) feet; moon and sun and (my) eyes; with directions and sky (my) body; air in (my) mind, my abides.)
Fire is my mouth, earth my feet, the moon and sun my eyes, directions and the sky my body, and air abides in my mind. (03-187-7)
मया क्रतुशतैरिष्टं बहुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः। यजन्ते वेदविदुषो मां देवयजने स्थितम् ॥०३-१८७-८॥
mayā kratuśatairiṣṭaṃ bahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ। yajante vedaviduṣo māṃ devayajane sthitam॥03-187-8॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; क्रतुशतैः (kratuśataiḥ) - by hundreds of sacrifices; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - offered; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः (svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ) - with proper fees distributed (to priests); यजन्ते (yajante) - they worship; वेदविदुषः (vedaviduṣaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; माम् (mām) - me; देवयजने (devayajane) - in the worship of the gods; स्थितम् (sthitam) - situated;]
(By me, by hundreds of sacrifices, offered by many with proper fees distributed, the knowers of the Veda worship me, situated in the worship of the gods.)
By me, hundreds of sacrifices, properly offered with many fees, are performed by the knowers of the Veda, who worship me as present in the sacrificial worship of the gods. (03-187-8)
पृथिव्यां क्षत्रियेन्द्राश्च पार्थिवाः स्वर्गकाङ्क्षिणः। यजन्ते मां तथा वैश्याः स्वर्गलोकजिगीषवः ॥०३-१८७-९॥
pṛthivyāṃ kṣatriyendrāś ca pārthivāḥ svargakāṅkṣiṇaḥ. yajante māṃ tathā vaiśyāḥ svargalokajigīṣavaḥ ॥03-187-9॥
[पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyām) - on earth; क्षत्रियेन्द्राः (kṣatriyendrāḥ) - kings among kṣatriyas; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - rulers; स्वर्गकाङ्क्षिणः (svargakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring heaven; यजन्ते (yajante) - they worship; माम् (mām) - me; तथा (tathā) - likewise; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; स्वर्गलोकजिगीषवः (svargalokajigīṣavaḥ) - wishing to conquer the heavenly world;]
(On earth, kings among kṣatriyas and rulers desiring heaven worship me; likewise Vaiśyas wishing to conquer the heavenly world.)
On earth, kings among the kṣatriyas and rulers who desire heaven worship me; likewise, the Vaiśyas who wish to attain the world of heaven. (3-187-9)
चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तां मेरुमन्दरभूषणाम्। शेषो भूत्वाहमेवैतां धारयामि वसुन्धराम् ॥०३-१८७-१०॥
catuḥ-samudra-paryantāṃ meru-mandara-bhūṣaṇām। śeṣaḥ bhūtvā aham eva etāṃ dhārayāmi vasundharām॥03-187-10॥
[चतुःसमुद्रपर्यन्तां (catuḥ-samudra-paryantām) - reaching to the four oceans; मेरुमन्दरभूषणाम् (meru-mandara-bhūṣaṇām) - adorned by Meru and Mandara mountains; शेषः (śeṣaḥ) - Śeṣa (the serpent-god); भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - indeed; एताम् (etām) - this; धारयामि (dhārayāmi) - bear; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth;]
(The earth reaching to the four oceans, adorned by Meru and Mandara mountains, having become Śeṣa I indeed bear this earth.)
Becoming Śeṣa, I indeed bear this earth, which extends to the four oceans and is adorned by the Meru and Mandara mountains. (03-187-10)
वाराहं रूपमास्थाय मयेयं जगती पुरा। मज्जमाना जले विप्र वीर्येणासीत्समुद्धृता ॥०३-१८७-११॥
vārāhaṃ rūpam āsthāya mayaiyaṃ jagatī purā। majjamānā jale vipra vīryeṇāsīt samuddhṛtā ॥03-187-11॥
[वाराहं (vārāham) - boar; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; मया (mayā) - by me; इयम् (iyam) - this; जगती (jagatī) - earth; पुरा (purā) - formerly; मज्जमाना (majjamānā) - sinking; जले (jale) - in water; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by power; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; समुद्धृता (samuddhṛtā) - lifted up;]
(Having assumed boar form, by me, this earth formerly, sinking in water, O brāhmaṇa, by power, was lifted up.)
O brāhmaṇa, formerly, I assumed the form of a boar and by my power, this earth, which was sinking in the water, was lifted up. (03-187-11)
अग्निश्च वडवावक्त्रो भूत्वाहं द्विजसत्तम। पिबाम्यपः समाविद्धास्ताश्चैव विसृजाम्यहम् ॥०३-१८७-१२॥
agniś ca vaḍavā-vaktro bhūtvāhaṃ dvija-sattama। pibāmy apaḥ samāviddhās tāś caiva visṛjāmy aham ॥03-187-12॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; fire; च (ca) - and; वडवावक्त्रः (vaḍavā-vaktraḥ) - with the mouth of Vaḍavā (submarine mare); भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; द्विजसत्तम (dvija-sattama) - O best of twice-born; पिबामि (pibāmi) - I drink; अपः (apaḥ) - the waters; समाविद्धाः (samāviddhāḥ) - filled (with) completely; ताः (tāḥ) - those; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विसृजामि (visṛjāmi) - I discharge; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Agni and with the mouth of Vaḍavā having become, I, O best of twice-born, drink the waters, completely filled those and indeed I discharge, I.)
O best of the twice-born, having assumed the form of Agni with the mouth of Vaḍavā, I drink up the waters and, having filled them, I also discharge them. (03-187-12)
ब्रह्म वक्त्रं भुजौ क्षत्रमूरू मे संश्रिता विशः। पादौ शूद्रा भजन्ते मे विक्रमेण क्रमेण च ॥०३-१८७-१३॥
brahma vaktraṁ bhujau kṣatramūrū me saṁśritā viśaḥ। pādau śūdrā bhajante me vikrameṇa krameṇa ca॥03-187-13॥
[ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahmins; वक्त्रं (vaktraṁ) - mouth; भुजौ (bhujau) - arms; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - Kṣatriyas; ऊरू (ūrū) - thighs; मे (me) - my; संश्रिता (saṁśritā) - have resorted to; विशः (viśaḥ) - Vaiśyas; पादौ (pādau) - feet; शूद्रा (śūdrā) - Śūdras; भजन्ते (bhajante) - partake; मे (me) - my; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by strength; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - by order; च (ca) - and;]
(Brahmins (are) my mouth; arms (are) Kṣatriyas; thighs my resorted Vaiśyas; feet Śūdras partake my, by strength, by order and.)
Brahmins are my mouth, Kṣatriyas are my arms, Vaiśyas have resorted to my thighs, Śūdras partake of my feet—by strength and by order. (03-187-13)
ऋग्वेदः सामवेदश्च यजुर्वेदोऽप्यथर्वणः। मत्तः प्रादुर्भवन्त्येते मामेव प्रविशन्ति च ॥०३-१८७-१४॥
ṛgvedaḥ sāmavedash ca yajurvedo'py atharvaṇaḥ। mattaḥ prādurbhavanty ete mām eva praviśanti ca ॥03-187-14॥
[ऋग्वेदः (ṛgvedaḥ) - Ṛgveda; सामवेदः (sāmavedaḥ) - Sāmaveda; च (ca) - and; यजुर्वेदः (yajurvedaḥ) - Yajurveda; अपि (api) - also; अथर्वणः (atharvaṇaḥ) - Atharvaṇa (Atharva Veda); मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; प्रादुर्भवन्ति (prādurbhavanti) - arise; एते (ete) - these; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; च (ca) - and;]
(Ṛgveda, Sāmaveda and Yajurveda, also Atharva Veda; from me arise these; me indeed they enter and.)
The Ṛgveda, Sāmaveda, Yajurveda and also the Atharva Veda—these arise from me and again enter into me. (03-187-14)
यतयः शान्तिपरमा यतात्मानो मुमुक्षवः। कामक्रोधद्वेषमुक्ता निःसङ्गा वीतकल्मषाः ॥०३-१८७-१५॥
yatayaḥ śāntiparamā yatātmāno mumukṣavaḥ। kāmakrodhadveṣamuktā niḥsaṅgā vītakalmaṣāḥ ॥03-187-15॥
[यतयः (yatayaḥ) - ascetics; शान्ति-परमा (śānti-paramā) - who are supreme in peace; यत-आत्मानः (yata-ātmānaḥ) - who have controlled themselves; मुमुक्षवः (mumukṣavaḥ) - those desiring liberation; काम-क्रोध-द्वेष-मुक्ताः (kāma-krodha-dveṣa-muktāḥ) - freed from desire, anger, and hatred; निःसङ्गाः (niḥsaṅgāḥ) - detached; वीत-कल्मषाः (vīta-kalmaṣāḥ) - free from sin;]
(Ascetics who are supreme in peace, who have controlled themselves, who desire liberation, freed from desire, anger, and hatred, detached, free from sin.)
Ascetics who are devoted to peace, are self-controlled, seek liberation, are free from desire, anger, and hatred, are unattached, and are without sin. (03-187-15)
सत्त्वस्था निरहङ्कारा नित्यमध्यात्मकोविदाः। मामेव सततं विप्राश्चिन्तयन्त उपासते ॥०३-१८७-१६॥
sattvasthā nirahaṅkārā nityam adhyātmakovidāḥ। mām eva satataṃ viprāś cintayanta upāsate॥03-187-16॥
[सत्त्वस्था (sattvasthā) - abiding in sattva; निरहङ्कारा (nirahaṅkārā) - without ego; नित्यमध्यात्मकोविदाः (nityam adhyātmakovidāḥ) - ever-knowers of the inner self; मामेव (mām eva) - me only; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brahmins; चिन्तयन्त (cintayanta) - thinking; उपासते (upāsate) - worship;]
(Abiding in sattva, without ego, ever-knowers of the inner self, me only constantly the brahmins thinking worship.)
Brahmins abiding in sattva, free from ego, always knowing the self, constantly think of and worship only me. (03-187-16)
अहं संवर्तको ज्योतिरहं सर्वर्तको यमः। अहं संवर्तकः सूर्यो अहं संवर्तकोऽनिलः ॥०३-१८७-१७॥
ahaṃ saṃvartako jyotirahaṃ sarvartako yamaḥ। ahaṃ saṃvartakaḥ sūryo ahaṃ saṃvartako'nilaḥ ॥03-187-17॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; संवर्तकः (saṃvartakaḥ) - the destroyer; ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ) - light; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सर्वर्तकः (sarvartakaḥ) - the all-destroying; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; संवर्तकः (saṃvartakaḥ) - the destroyer; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - Sun; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; संवर्तकः (saṃvartakaḥ) - the destroyer; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - Wind;]
(I am the destroyer light, I am the all-destroying Yama. I am the destroyer Sun, I am the destroyer Wind.)
I am the light of destruction; I am Yama, who destroys everything. I am the destructive Sun; I am the destructive Wind. (03-187-17)
तारारूपाणि दृश्यन्ते यान्येतानि नभस्तले। मम रूपाण्यथैतानि विद्धि त्वं द्विजसत्तम ॥०३-१८७-१८॥
tārārūpāṇi dṛśyante yāny etāni nabhastale। mama rūpāṇy athaitāni viddhi tvaṃ dvijasattama॥03-187-18॥
[तारारूपाणि (tārārūpāṇi) - star-forms; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; यानि (yāni) - which; एतानि (etāni) - these; नभस्तले (nabhastale) - in the expanse of the sky; मम (mama) - my; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; अथ (atha) - and; एतानि (etāni) - these; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - best of the twice-born;]
(The star-forms which these are seen in the sky-expanse, my forms and these know you, O best of the twice-born.)
The forms that appear as stars in the sky—know these as my forms, O best of the twice-born. (03-187-18)
रत्नाकराः समुद्राश्च सर्व एव चतुर्दिशम्। वसनं शयनं चैव निलयं चैव विद्धि मे ॥०३-१८७-१९॥
ratnākaraāḥ samudrāś ca sarva eva caturdiśam। vasanaṃ śayanaṃ caiva nilayaṃ caiva viddhi me॥03-187-19॥
[रत्नाकराः (ratnākarāḥ) - oceans; (literally: gem-mines;) समुद्राः (samudrāḥ) - seas; च (ca) - and; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; चतुर्दिशम् (caturdiśam) - in all four directions; वसनम् (vasanam) - clothing; शयनम् (śayanam) - bed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निलयम् (nilayam) - abode; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मे (me) - my;]
(Oceans, seas and indeed all in the four directions—clothing, bed, and indeed abode also—know (these as) mine.)
Know that the oceans, the seas, and indeed everything in all four directions—clothing, bed, and abode—belong to me. (03-187-19)
कामं क्रोधं च हर्षं च भयं मोहं तथैव च। ममैव विद्धि रूपाणि सर्वाण्येतानि सत्तम ॥०३-१८७-२०॥
kāmaṃ krodhaṃ ca harṣaṃ ca bhayaṃ mohaṃ tathaiva ca। mamaiva viddhi rūpāṇi sarvāṇyetāni sattama ॥03-187-20॥
[कामं (kāmaṃ) - desire; क्रोधं (krodhaṃ) - anger; च (ca) - and; हर्षं (harṣaṃ) - joy; च (ca) - and; भयं (bhayaṃ) - fear; मोहं (mohaṃ) - delusion; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - only; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; एतानि (etāni) - these; सत्तम (sattama) - O best one;]
(Desire, anger, and joy, and fear, delusion, likewise and; my only know forms all these, O best one.)
O best one, know all these—desire, anger, joy, fear, and delusion, likewise—are indeed my own forms. (3-187-20)
प्राप्नुवन्ति नरा विप्र यत्कृत्वा कर्मशोभनम्। सत्यं दानं तपश्चोग्रमहिंसा चैव जन्तुषु ॥०३-१८७-२१॥
prāpnuvanti narā vipra yat kṛtvā karmaśobhanam| satyaṃ dānaṃ tapaś cogra mahiṃsā caiva jantuṣu ॥03-187-21॥
[प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - they obtain; they attain; नराः (narāḥ) - men; people; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; यत् (yat) - which; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कर्मशोभनम् (karmaśobhanam) - beautiful deed; virtuous action; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; दानम् (dānam) - gift; giving; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; उग्रम् (ugram) - intense; अहिंसा (ahiṃsā) - nonviolence; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जन्तुषु (jantuṣu) - towards beings;]
(O Brāhmaṇa, men obtain which having done beautiful action: truth, gift, austerity, intense nonviolence indeed towards beings.)
O Brāhmaṇa, men achieve that virtuous result by performing actions such as truthfulness, charity, austerity, and especially intense nonviolence toward living beings. (03-187-21)
मद्विधानेन विहिता मम देहविहारिणः। मयाभिभूतविज्ञाना विचेष्टन्ते न कामतः ॥०३-१८७-२२॥
madvidhānena vihitā mama dehavihāriṇaḥ। mayābhibhūtavijñānā viceṣṭante na kāmataḥ ॥03-187-22॥
[मद्विधानेन (madvidhānena) - by my arrangement; विहिता (vihitā) - assigned; मम (mama) - my; देहविहारिणः (dehavihāriṇaḥ) - the dwellers in the body; मया (mayā) - by me; अभिभूतविज्ञाना (abhibhūtavijñānā) - whose awareness is overpowered; विचेष्टन्ते (viceṣṭante) - they act; न (na) - not; कामतः (kāmataḥ) - by desire;]
(By my arrangement, the dwellers in my body, whose awareness is overpowered by me, act, not by desire.)
By my arrangement, the beings dwelling in my body, whose awareness has been overpowered by me, do not act by their own desire. (03-187-22)
सम्यग्वेदमधीयाना यजन्तो विविधैर्मखैः। शान्तात्मानो जितक्रोधाः प्राप्नुवन्ति द्विजातयः ॥०३-१८७-२३॥
samyag-veda-madhīyānā yajanto vividhair makhaiḥ। śāntātmāno jitakrodhāḥ prāpnuvanti dvijātayaḥ॥03-187-23॥
[सम्यग् (samyag) - properly; thoroughly; वेदम् (vedam) - Veda; sacred knowledge; अधीयानाः (adhīyānāḥ) - those studying; learners; यजन्तः (yajantaḥ) - those performing sacrifices; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; मखैः (makhaiḥ) - sacrifices; rituals; शान्तात्मानः (śāntātmānaḥ) - those with peaceful mind; those whose self is tranquil; जितक्रोधाः (jitakrodhāḥ) - those who have conquered anger; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; reach; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - twice-born ones; Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas;]
(Properly Veda-studying learners performing sacrifices with various rituals, those with peaceful mind, those who have conquered anger, attain (this), twice-born ones.)
Twice-born ones who properly study the Veda, perform sacrifices with various rituals, have peaceful minds, and have conquered anger attain (this). (03-187-23)
प्राप्तुं न शक्यो यो विद्वन्नरैर्दुष्कृतकर्मभिः। लोभाभिभूतैः कृपणैरनार्यैरकृतात्मभिः ॥०३-१८७-२४॥
prāptuṃ na śakyo yo vidvannaraiḥ duṣkṛtakarmabhiḥ। lobhābhibhūtaiḥ kṛpaṇair anāryair akṛtātmabhiḥ॥03-187-24॥
[प्राप्तुं (prāptum) - to obtain; to gain; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; able; यः (yaḥ) - who; विद्वन्-नरैः (vidvan-naraiḥ) - by the wise men; दुष्कृत-कर्मभिः (duṣkṛta-karmabhiḥ) - by those with wicked actions; लोभ-अभिभूतैः (lobha-abhibhūtaiḥ) - overcome by greed; कृपणैः (kṛpaṇaiḥ) - by the miserable; by the wretched; अनार्यैः (anāryaiḥ) - by the ignoble; non-noble; अकृतात्मभिः (akṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those lacking self-control;]
(To obtain not possible who by the wise men by those with wicked actions, by those overcome by greed, by the miserable, by the ignoble, by those lacking self-control.)
That (object) cannot be obtained by wise men associated with wicked action, by those who are overcome with greed, by the wretched, by the ignoble, and by those lacking self-control. (03-187-24)
तं मां महाफलं विद्धि पदं सुकृतकर्मणः। दुष्प्रापं विप्रमूढानां मार्गं योगैर्निषेवितम् ॥०३-१८७-२५॥
taṁ māṁ mahāphalaṁ viddhi padaṁ sukṛtakarmaṇaḥ। duṣprāpaṁ vipramūḍhānāṁ mārgaṁ yogairniṣevitam ॥03-187-25॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; मां (māṁ) - me; महाफलं (mahāphalaṁ) - having great fruit; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; पदं (padaṁ) - goal; सुकृतकर्मणः (sukṛtakarmaṇaḥ) - of one whose actions are virtuous; दुष्प्रापं (duṣprāpaṁ) - difficult to attain; विप्रमूढानां (vipramūḍhānāṁ) - of those greatly deluded; मार्गं (mārgaṁ) - path; योगैः (yogaiḥ) - by yogas (disciplines); निषेवितम् (niṣevitam) - frequented;]
(That me, having great fruit, know (as) the goal of one whose actions are virtuous, difficult to attain to those greatly deluded, (the) path frequented by yogas (disciplines).)
Know me to be that great-fruited goal of the virtuous, a path difficult to attain for the greatly deluded, followed by yogic disciplines. (03-187-25)
यदा यदा च धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति सत्तम। अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥०३-१८७-२६॥
yadā yadā ca dharmasya glānir bhavati sattama। abhyutthānam adharmasya tad ātmānaṃ sṛjāmy aham ॥03-187-26॥
[यदा (yadā) - whenever; यदा (yadā) - whenever; च (ca) - and; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; ग्लानि: (glāniḥ) - decline; भवति (bhavati) - arises; सत्तम (sattama) - O best of beings; अभ्युत्थानम् (abhyutthānam) - rise; अधर्मस्य (adharmasya) - of adharma; तदा (tadā) - then; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - Self; सृजामि (sṛjāmi) - I manifest; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Whenever whenever and of dharma decline arises O best of beings, rise of adharma then Self I manifest I.)
Whenever there is a decline of dharma, O best of beings, and a rise of adharma, then I manifest Myself. (03-187-26)
दैत्या हिंसानुरक्ताश्च अवध्याः सुरसत्तमैः। राक्षसाश्चापि लोकेऽस्मिन्यदोत्पत्स्यन्ति दारुणाः ॥०३-१८७-२७॥
daityā hiṁsānuraktāś ca avadhyāḥ surasattamaiḥ। rākṣasāś cāpi loke'smin yadotpatsyanti dāruṇāḥ॥03-187-27॥
[दैत्या (daityāḥ) - the Daityas; (demon race descended from Diti); हिंसा (hiṁsā) - violence; अनुरक्ताः (anuraktāḥ) - attached to; च (ca) - and; अवध्याः (avadhyāḥ) - invulnerable; not to be killed; सुरसत्तमैः (surasattamaiḥ) - by the foremost of the gods; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - the Rākṣasas; (demon race); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन (asmin) - in this; यत् (yat) - which; उत्पत्स्यन्ति (utpatsyanti) - will be born; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - fierce;]
(Daityas, attached to violence, and invulnerable by the foremost of the gods; Rākṣasas also in this world which will be born fierce.)
The Daityas, who are attached to violence, are invulnerable even to the foremost of the gods; and the Rākṣasas also, who will be born in this world, will be fierce. (03-187-27)
तदाहं सम्प्रसूयामि गृहेषु शुभकर्मणाम्। प्रविष्टो मानुषं देहं सर्वं प्रशमयाम्यहम् ॥०३-१८७-२८॥
tadāhaṃ samprasūyāmi gṛheṣu śubhakarmaṇām। praviṣṭo mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ sarvaṃ praśamayāmyaham ॥03-187-28॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; सम्प्रसूयामि (samprasūyāmi) - I produce (bring forth); गृहेषु (gṛheṣu) - in houses; शुभकर्मणाम् (śubhakarmaṇām) - of the auspicious deeds (or the performers of good deeds); प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - having entered; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; देहम् (deham) - body; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रशमयामि (praśamayāmi) - I pacify; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Then I, having produced (being born) in the houses of those performing auspicious deeds, having entered a human body, I pacify all.)
Then I, being born in the houses of the pious, possessing a human body, pacify all things. (03-187-28)
सृष्ट्वा देवमनुष्यांश्च गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसान्। स्थावराणि च भूतानि संहराम्यात्ममायया ॥०३-१८७-२९॥
sṛṣṭvā devamanuṣyāṁś ca gandharvoragarākṣasān। sthāvarāṇi ca bhūtāni saṁharāmy ātmamāyayā ॥03-187-29॥
[सृष्ट्वा (sṛṣṭvā) - having created; देवमनुष्यांश्च (devamanuṣyāṁś ca) - gods and humans and; गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसान् (gandharva-uraga-rākṣasān) - gandharvas, serpents, demons; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immovable ones; च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; संहरामि (saṁharāmi) - I withdraw; आत्ममायया (ātmamāyayā) - by my own māyā;]
(Having created gods and humans and gandharvas, serpents, demons, immovable ones and beings, I withdraw by my own māyā.)
Having created gods, humans, gandharvas, serpents, demons, and immovable beings, I withdraw them all by my own māyā. (03-187-29)
कर्मकाले पुनर्देहमनुचिन्त्य सृजाम्यहम्। प्रविश्य मानुषं देहं मर्यादाबन्धकारणात् ॥०३-१८७-३०॥
karmakāle punardeham anucintya sṛjāmyaham। praviśya mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ maryādābandhakāraṇāt॥03-187-30॥
[कर्मकाले (karmakāle) - at the time of karma (action); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; देहम् (deham) - body; अनुचिन्त्य (anucintya) - after considering; सृजामि (sṛjāmi) - I create; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; देहम् (deham) - body; मर्यादा (maryādā) - limitation; बन्ध (bandha) - binding; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - for the reason;]
(At the time of karma, again body after considering I create I; having entered human body for the reason of limitation and binding.)
At the time of action, having considered, I create again a body; entering a human body for the reason of limitation and binding. (03-187-30)
श्वेतः कृतयुगे वर्णः पीतस्त्रेतायुगे मम। रक्तो द्वापरमासाद्य कृष्णः कलियुगे तथा ॥०३-१८७-३१॥
śvetaḥ kṛtayuge varṇaḥ pītas tretāyuge mama | rakto dvāparam āsādya kṛṣṇaḥ kaliyuge tathā ॥03-187-31॥
[श्वेतः (śvetaḥ) - white; कृतयुगे (kṛtayuge) - in the Kṛta Yuga; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - color; पीतः (pītaḥ) - yellow; त्रेता-युगे (tretāyuge) - in the Tretā Yuga; मम (mama) - my; रक्तः (raktaḥ) - red; द्वापरम् (dvāparam) - the Dvāpara Yuga; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - black; कलियुगे (kaliyuge) - in the Kali Yuga; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(White in the Kṛta Yuga is color, yellow in the Tretā Yuga mine. Red, having approached the Dvāpara, black thus in the Kali Yuga.)
My color is white in the Kṛta Yuga, yellow in the Tretā Yuga, red upon entering the Dvāpara Yuga, and likewise black in the Kali Yuga. (03-187-31)
त्रयो भागा ह्यधर्मस्य तस्मिन्काले भवन्त्युत। अन्तकाले च सम्प्राप्ते कालो भूत्वातिदारुणः ॥ त्रैलोक्यं नाशयाम्येकः कृत्स्नं स्थावरजङ्गमम् ॥०३-१८७-३२॥
trayo bhāgā hy adharmasya tasmin kāle bhavanty uta। antakāle ca samprāpte kālo bhūtv ātidāruṇaḥ॥ trailokyaṁ nāśayāmy ekaḥ kṛtsnaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam ॥03-187-32॥
[त्रयः (trayaḥ) (trayaḥ) - three; भागाः (bhāgāḥ) (bhāgāḥ) - parts; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; अधर्मस्य (adharmasya) (adharmasya) - of unrighteousness; तस्मिन् (tasmin) (tasmin) - in that; काले (kāle) (kāle) - time; भवन्ति (bhavanti) (bhavanti) - arise; उत (uta) (uta) - and; अन्तकाले (antakāle) (antakāle) - at the final time; च (ca) (ca) - and; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) (samprāpte) - having arrived; कालः (kālaḥ) (kālaḥ) - time; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) (bhūtvā) - having become; अतिदारुणः (atidāruṇaḥ) (atidāruṇaḥ) - very dreadful; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) (trailokyam) - the three worlds; नाशयामि (nāśayāmi) (nāśayāmi) - I destroy; एकः (ekaḥ) (ekaḥ) - alone; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) (kṛtsnam) - entire; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvarajaṅgamam) (sthāvarajaṅgamam) - immovable and movable;]
(Three parts indeed of unrighteousness in that time arise and. At the final time also, when arrived, time having become very dreadful. The three worlds I destroy alone, entire, immovable and movable.)
In that period, three parts of unrighteousness indeed arise. When the final time arrives and time becomes exceedingly dreadful, I alone destroy the entire three worlds, both immovable and movable. (03-187-32)
अहं त्रिवर्त्मा सर्वात्मा सर्वलोकसुखावहः। अभिभूः सर्वगोऽनन्तो हृषीकेश उरुक्रमः ॥०३-१८७-३३॥
ahaṃ trivartmā sarvātmā sarvalokasukhāvahaḥ। abhibhūḥ sarvago'nanto hṛṣīkeśa urukramaḥ॥03-187-33॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; त्रिवर्त्मा (trivartmā) - he of the three paths; सर्वात्मा (sarvātmā) - the self of all; सर्वलोकसुखावहः (sarvalokasukhāvahaḥ) - the bringer of happiness to all worlds; अभिभूः (abhibhūḥ) - the overpowering one; सर्वगः (sarvagaḥ) - pervading all; अनन्तः (anantaḥ) - infinite; हृषीकेश (hṛṣīkeśa) - Hṛṣīkeśa; उरुक्रमः (urukramaḥ) - the one of vast strides;]
(I, he of the three paths, the self of all, the bringer of happiness to all worlds, the overpowering one, pervading all, infinite, Hṛṣīkeśa, the one of vast strides.)
I am he of the three paths, the self of all, the bringer of happiness to all worlds, the overpowering one, the all-pervading, the infinite, Hṛṣīkeśa, the one of great strides. (03-187-33)
कालचक्रं नयाम्येको ब्रह्मन्नहमरूपि वै। शमनं सर्वभूतानां सर्वलोककृतोद्यमम् ॥०३-१८७-३४॥
kālacakraṃ nayāmyeko brahmann aham arūpi vai। śamanaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ sarvalokakṛtodyamam॥03-187-34॥
[कालचक्रं (kālacakram) - the wheel of time; नयामि (nayāmi) - I lead; I move; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; only one; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; अहम् (aham) - I; अरूपि (arūpi) - formless; वै (vai) - indeed; शमनम् (śamanam) - cessation; destruction; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; सर्वलोककृतोद्यमम् (sarvaloka-kṛta-udyamam) - the exertion effected by all worlds;]
(The wheel of time I move alone, O Brahman, I indeed am formless; destruction of all beings, the exertion made by all the worlds.)
O Brahman, I alone move the wheel of time; I am truly formless, and the destruction of all beings, as well as the exertion made by all the worlds, comes from me. (03-187-34)
एवं प्रणिहितः सम्यङ्मयात्मा मुनिसत्तम। सर्वभूतेषु विप्रेन्द्र न च मां वेत्ति कश्चन ॥०३-१८७-३५॥
evaṃ praṇihitaḥ samyaṅ-mayātmā munisattama। sarvabhūteṣu viprendra na ca māṃ vetti kaścana ॥03-187-35॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्रणिहितः (praṇihitaḥ) - applied; directed; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; correctly; perfectly; मया (mayā) - by me; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - in all beings; विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O chief of Brāhmaṇas; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone;]
(Thus, properly applied by me (the) self, O best of sages, in all beings, O chief of Brāhmaṇas, not and me (does) anyone know.)
Even though my self is thus properly established by me in all beings, O best of sages, O chief of Brāhmaṇas, yet no one knows me. (03-187-35)
यच्च किञ्चित्त्वया प्राप्तं मयि क्लेषात्मकं द्विज। सुखोदयाय तत्सर्वं श्रेयसे च तवानघ ॥०३-१८७-३६॥
yacca kiñcittvayā prāptaṁ mayi kleṣātmakaṁ dvija. sukhodayāya tatsarvaṁ śreyase ca tavānagha ॥03-187-36॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्राप्तं (prāptaṁ) - obtained; मयि (mayi) - upon me; क्लेषात्मकं (kleṣātmakaṁ) - of the nature of suffering; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; सुखोदयाय (sukhodayāya) - for the arising of happiness; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; श्रेयसे (śreyase) - for the good; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - for you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(And whatever of the nature of suffering has been obtained by you in regard to me, O twice-born, all that is for the arising of happiness, and for your good, O sinless one.)
O twice-born, whatever hardship you have experienced on my behalf, all of it is for your future happiness and your ultimate good, O sinless one. (03-187-36)
यच्च किञ्चित्त्वया लोके दृष्टं स्थावरजङ्गमम्। विहितः सर्वथैवासौ ममात्मा मुनिसत्तम ॥०३-१८७-३७॥
yacca kiñcittvayā loke dṛṣṭaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam। vihitaḥ sarvathaivāsau mamātmā munisattama ॥03-187-37॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; लोके (loke) - in the world; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvarajaṅgamam) - immobile and mobile (beings); विहितः (vihitaḥ) - created; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; एव (eva) - indeed; असौ (asau) - this; मम (mama) - my; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages;]
(Which and anything by you in the world seen, immobile and mobile, created, in every way indeed, this my self, O best of sages.)
O best of sages, whatever immobile or mobile thing you have seen in this world, all that, in every way, is indeed my own Self. (03-187-37)
अर्धं मम शरीरस्य सर्वलोकपितामहः। अहं नारायणो नाम शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः ॥०३-१८७-३८॥
ardhaṃ mama śarīrasya sarvalokapitāmahaḥ। ahaṃ nārāyaṇo nāma śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ ॥03-187-38॥
[अर्धं (ardham) - half; मम (mama) - of me; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; सर्वलोकपितामहः (sarvalokapitāmahaḥ) - grandfather of all worlds; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; नाम (nāma) - by name; शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः (śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ) - holder of conch, discus, and mace;]
(Half of my body is the grandfather of all worlds. I am Nārāyaṇa by name, holder of the conch, discus, and mace.)

यावद्युगानां विप्रर्षे सहस्रपरिवर्तनम्। तावत्स्वपिमि विश्वात्मा सर्वलोकपितामहः ॥०३-१८७-३९॥
yāvadyugānāṃ viprarṣe sahasraparivartanam। tāvatsvapimi viśvātmā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ ॥03-187-39॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; युगानाम् (yugānām) - of ages; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O brāhmaṇa sage; सहस्र (sahasra) - a thousand; परिवर्तनम् (parivartanam) - cycles (of turning); तावत् (tāvat) - so long; स्वपिमि (svapimi) - I sleep; विश्वात्मा (viśvātmā) - the soul of all; सर्वलोकपितामहः (sarvalokapitāmahaḥ) - the grandfather (patriarch) of all worlds;]
(As long as, O brāhmaṇa sage, a thousand cycles of ages (yugas) take place, so long I sleep, the soul of all, the grandfather of all worlds.)
O brāhmaṇa sage, as long as a thousand cycles of ages pass, the soul of all and the grandfather of all worlds sleeps. (03-187-39)
एवं सर्वमहं कालमिहासे मुनिसत्तम। अशिशुः शिशुरूपेण यावद्ब्रह्मा न बुध्यते ॥०३-१८७-४०॥
evaṁ sarvam ahaṁ kālam ihāse munisattama। aśiśuḥ śiśurūpeṇa yāvad brahmā na budhyate ॥03-187-40॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; कालम् (kālam) - time; इह (iha) - here; आसे (āse) - I remain; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages; अशिशुः (aśiśuḥ) - not a child; शिशु-रूपेण (śiśurūpeṇa) - in the form of a child; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; न (na) - not; बुध्यते (budhyate) - perceives;]
(Thus all the time I remain here, O best of sages, not being a child but in the form of a child, as long as Brahmā does not perceive.)
O best of sages, in this way, I remain here all the while, assuming the form of a child though not truly a child, until Brahmā becomes aware. (03-187-40)
मया च विप्र दत्तोऽयं वरस्ते ब्रह्मरूपिणा। असकृत्परितुष्टेन विप्रर्षिगणपूजित ॥०३-१८७-४१॥
mayā ca vipra datto'yaṃ varas te brahmarūpiṇā। asakṛtparituṣṭena viprarṣigaṇapūjita ॥03-187-41॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - given; अयम् (ayam) - this; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; ते (te) - to you; ब्रह्मरूपिणा (brahmarūpiṇā) - by one in the form of Brahman; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; परितुष्टेन (parituṣṭena) - greatly pleased; विप्रर्षिगणपूजित (viprarṣigaṇapūjita) - honored by groups of Brāhmaṇa-sages;]
(By me and, O Brāhmaṇa, this boon is given to you by one in the form of Brahman, being repeatedly greatly pleased, honored by groups of Brāhmaṇa-sages.)
O Brāhmaṇa, this boon has been given to you by me, appearing in the form of Brahman, repeatedly gratified and honored by assemblies of Brāhmaṇa-sages. (03-187-41)
सर्वमेकार्णवं दृष्ट्वा नष्टं स्थावरजङ्गमम्। विक्लवोऽसि मया ज्ञातस्ततस्ते दर्शितं जगत् ॥०३-१८७-४२॥
sarvamekārṇavaṃ dṛṣṭvā naṣṭaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam। viklavo'si mayā jñātastataste darśitaṃ jagat ॥03-187-42॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एक-अर्णवं (eka-arṇavam) - one ocean; as one ocean; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नष्टम् (naṣṭam) - destroyed; perished; स्थावर-जङ्गमम् (sthāvara-jaṅgamam) - the immobile and mobile (beings); विक्लवः (viklavaḥ) - distressed; agitated; असि (asi) - you are; मया (mayā) - by me; ज्ञातः (jñātaḥ) - understood; known; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; ते (te) - to you; दर्शितम् (darśitam) - shown; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(All as one ocean having seen, destroyed the immobile and mobile (beings), distressed you are, by me understood; therefore, to you the world (is) shown.)
Seeing everything as one ocean and the destruction of all immobile and mobile beings, you became distressed; having understood this, I have therefore shown you the world. (03-187-42)
अभ्यन्तरं शरीरस्य प्रविष्टोऽसि यदा मम। दृष्ट्वा लोकं समस्तं च विस्मितो नावबुध्यसे ॥०३-१८७-४३॥
abhyantaraṃ śarīrasya praviṣṭo'si yadā mama। dṛṣṭvā lokaṃ samastaṃ ca vismito nāvabudhyase ॥03-187-43॥
[अभ्यन्तरं (abhyantaram) - inside; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; असि (asi) - you are; यदा (yadā) - when; मम (mama) - my; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; लोकं (lokaṃ) - the world; समस्तं (samastaṃ) - entire; च (ca) - and; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यसे (avabudhyase) - you perceive;]
(Inside my body you are entered when, having seen the entire world and astonished, you do not perceive.)
When you have entered inside my body and, having seen the entire world, are astonished, you do not realize it. (03-187-43)
ततोऽसि वक्त्राद्विप्रर्षे द्रुतं निःसारितो मया। आख्यातस्ते मया चात्मा दुर्ज्ञेयोऽपि सुरासुरैः ॥०३-१८७-४४॥
tato'si vaktrād viprarṣe drutaṃ niḥsārito mayā। ākhyātas te mayā cātmā durjñeyo'pi surāsuraiḥ ॥03-187-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; असि (asi) - you are; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from (my) mouth; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; द्रुतं (drutam) - quickly; निःसारितः (niḥsāritaḥ) - brought forth; मया (mayā) - by me; आख्यातः (ākhyātaḥ) - declared; ते (te) - to you; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; दुर्ज्ञेयः (durjñeyaḥ) - difficult to know; अपि (api) - even; सुरा-असुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - by gods and asuras;]
(Then you are from (my) mouth, O best of Brāhmaṇas, quickly brought forth by me. Declared to you by me also is the self, difficult to know even by gods and asuras.)
Then, O best of Brāhmaṇas, you were quickly produced by me from my mouth; and I have also declared to you the self, which is difficult to know even by the gods and asuras. (03-187-44)
यावत्स भगवान्ब्रह्मा न बुध्यति महातपाः। तावत्त्वमिह विप्रर्षे विश्रब्धश्चर वै सुखम् ॥०३-१८७-४५॥
yāvatsa bhagavān brahmā na budhyati mahātapāḥ। tāvat tvam iha viprarṣe viśrabdhaś cara vai sukham ॥03-187-45॥
[यावत्स (yāvatsa) - as long as; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā (the creator god); न (na) - not; बुध्यति (budhyati) - perceives (awakens, notices); महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; विश्रब्धः (viśrabdhaḥ) - confidently; चर (cara) - move about; वै (vai) - indeed; सुखम् (sukham) - happily;]
(As long as the venerable Brahmā, the great ascetic, does not perceive, so long, you, here, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, confidently move about indeed happily.)
O sage among Brāhmaṇas, until the venerable Brahmā, the great ascetic, becomes aware, you may confidently move about here happily. (03-187-45)
ततो विबुद्धे तस्मिंस्तु सर्वलोकपितामहे। एकीभूतो हि स्रक्ष्यामि शरीराद्द्विजसत्तम ॥०३-१८७-४६॥
tato vibuddhe tasmiṃstu sarvalokapitāmahe। ekībhūto hi srakṣyāmi śarīrāddvijasattama ॥03-187-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विबुद्धे (vibuddhe) - awakened; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; तु (tu) - but; सर्वलोकपितामहे (sarvalokapitāmahe) - to the grandsire of all worlds; एकीभूतः (ekībhūtaḥ) - having become one; हि (hi) - indeed; स्रक्ष्यामि (srakṣyāmi) - I shall create; शरीरात् (śarīrāt) - from (my) body; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born;]
(Then, in him awakened, but to the grandsire of all worlds, having become one indeed, I shall create from (my) body, O best of twice-born.)
Then, when he had awakened, O best of the twice-born, I, having become one, will indeed create (the worlds) from my body before the grandsire of all the worlds. (03-187-46)
आकाशं पृथिवीं ज्योतिर्वायुं सलिलमेव च। लोके यच्च भवेच्छेषमिह स्थावरजङ्गमम् ॥०३-१८७-४७॥
ākāśaṃ pṛthivīṃ jyotirvāyuṃ salilameva ca। loke yacca bhaveccheṣam iha sthāvarajaṅgamam॥03-187-47॥
[आकाशं (ākāśam) - sky; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīm) - earth; ज्योति: (jyotis) - light; वायुं (vāyum) - wind; सलिलम् (salilam) - water; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; लोके (loke) - in the world; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remaining; इह (iha) - here; स्थावरजङ्गमम् (sthāvarajaṅgamam) - immovable and movable;]
(sky, earth, light, wind, water indeed and; in the world whatever and may be remaining here, immovable and movable;)
The sky, earth, light, wind, water indeed and whatever else exists here in the world—whether immovable or movable—(all these are included). (03-187-47)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca॥

(Mārkaṇḍeya said;)
Mārkaṇḍeya said;
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितस्तात स देवः परमाद्भुतः। प्रजाश्चेमाः प्रपश्यामि विचित्रा बहुधाकृताः ॥०३-१८७-४८॥
ity uktvā antarhitaḥ tāta sa devaḥ paramādbhutaḥ। prajāś ca imāḥ prapaśyāmi vicitrāḥ bahudhākṛtāḥ ॥03-187-48॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; तात (tāta) - O dear one; स (sa) - he; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; परम (parama) - supremely; अद्भुतः (adbhutaḥ) - wonderful; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; च (ca) - and; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I see; विचित्राः (vicitrāḥ) - variegated; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; आकृताः (ākṛtāḥ) - forms;]
(Thus having spoken, disappeared, O dear one, he the god supremely wonderful. Creatures also these I see, variegated, in many ways forms.)
Having thus spoken, O dear one, that supremely wonderful god disappeared. And I see these creatures, variegated and of many forms. (03-187-48)
एतद्दृष्टं मया राजंस्तस्मिन्प्राप्ते युगक्षये। आश्चर्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ सर्वधर्मभृतां वर ॥०३-१८७-४९॥
etad dṛṣṭaṃ mayā rājaṃs tasmin prāpte yugakṣaye। āścaryaṃ bharataśreṣṭha sarvadharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥03-187-49॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when that; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - arrived; युगक्षये (yugakṣaye) - at the end of the age; आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of Bharatas; सर्वधर्मभृतां (sarvadharmabhṛtām) - of all upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best;]
(This seen by me, O king, when that has arrived at the end of the age, wonder, O best of Bharatas, best of all upholders of dharma.)
O king, I have seen this wonder at the end of the age, O best of Bharatas, best among all upholders of dharma. (03-187-49)
यः स देवो मया दृष्टः पुरा पद्मनिभेक्षणः। स एष पुरुषव्याघ्र सम्बन्धी ते जनार्दनः ॥०३-१८७-५०॥
yaḥ sa devo mayā dṛṣṭaḥ purā padmanibhekṣaṇaḥ। sa eṣa puruṣavyāghra sambandhī te janārdanaḥ॥03-187-50॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; देवः (devaḥ) - divine being; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पद्मनिभेक्षणः (padmanibhekṣaṇaḥ) - having eyes resembling a lotus; स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; ते (te) - your; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana;]
(Who, he divine being by me was seen formerly, having eyes resembling a lotus. He, this tiger among men, relative your, Janārdana.)
The divine being whom I formerly saw, whose eyes are like a lotus, that very Janārdana is your relative, O tiger among men. (03-187-50)
अस्यैव वरदानाद्धि स्मृतिर्न प्रजहाति माम्। दीर्घमायुश्च कौन्तेय स्वच्छन्दमरणं तथा ॥०३-१८७-५१॥
asyaiva varadānāddhi smṛtirna prajahāti mām। dīrghamāyuśca kaunteya svacchandamaraṇaṃ tathā ॥03-187-51॥
[अस्यैव (asyaiva) - of this alone; of this very; वरदानात् (varadānāt) - from the boon; हि (hi) - indeed; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory; न (na) - not; प्रजहाति (prajahāti) - abandons; माम् (mām) - me; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; आयुः (āyuḥ) - lifespan; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; स्वच्छन्दमरणम् (svacchandamaraṇam) - death at will; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Of this very boon, indeed, memory does not abandon me. Long lifespan and, O Kaunteya, death at will also.)
Because of this very boon, O Kaunteya, memory never leaves me; I also have a long life and the ability to die at my own will. (03-187-51)
स एष कृष्णो वार्ष्णेयः पुराणपुरुषो विभुः। आस्ते हरिरचिन्त्यात्मा क्रीडन्निव महाभुजः ॥०३-१८७-५२॥
sa eṣa kṛṣṇo vārṣṇeyaḥ purāṇapuruṣo vibhuḥ। āste hariracintyātmā krīḍanniva mahābhujaḥ॥03-187-52॥
[स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - descendant of Vṛṣṇi; पुराणपुरुषः (purāṇapuruṣaḥ) - ancient person; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the all-pervading; आस्ते (āste) - dwells; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu); अचिन्त्यात्मा (acintyātmā) - of inconceivable nature; क्रीडन्निव (krīḍan niva) - as if playing; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - having mighty arms;]
(He, this Kṛṣṇa, descendant of Vṛṣṇi, ancient person, all-pervading, dwells Hari of inconceivable nature, as if playing, having mighty arms.)
This is Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the eternal person and the all-pervading Lord. Hari, whose nature is inconceivable, sits here, with mighty arms, as if at play. (03-187-52)
एष धाता विधाता च संहर्ता चैव सात्वतः। श्रीवत्सवक्षा गोविन्दः प्रजापतिपतिः प्रभुः ॥०३-१८७-५३॥
eṣa dhātā vidhātā ca saṁhartā caiva sātvataḥ. śrīvatsavakṣā govindaḥ prajāpati-patiḥ prabhuḥ ॥03-187-53॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (one); धाता (dhātā) - creator; विधाता (vidhātā) - ordainer; च (ca) - and; संहर्ता (saṁhartā) - destroyer; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सात्वतः (sātvataḥ) - of the Sātwatas; श्रीवत्सवक्षा (śrīvatsavakṣā) - he whose chest bears the Śrīvatsa mark; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; प्रजापतिपतिः (prajāpatipatiḥ) - lord of the lords of progeny; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master;]
(This creator, ordainer and destroyer indeed, of the Sātwatas, whose chest bears the Śrīvatsa mark, Govinda, lord of the lords of progeny, master.)
He is the creator, ordainer, and destroyer, the lord of the Sātwatas, He whose chest bears the Śrīvatsa mark—Govinda, the master, the Lord of the lords of progeny. (03-187-53)
दृष्ट्वेमं वृष्णिशार्दूलं स्मृतिर्मामियमागता। आदिदेवमजं विष्णुं पुरुषं पीतवाससम् ॥०३-१८७-५४॥
dṛṣṭvemam vṛṣṇiśārdūlaṃ smṛtirmāmiyamāgatā। ādidevam ajaṃ viṣṇuṃ puruṣaṃ pītavāsasam ॥03-187-54॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; इमम् (imam) - this; वृष्णि-शार्दूलम् (vṛṣṇi-śārdūlam) - tiger among the Vṛṣṇis; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory; माम् (mām) - to me; इयम् (iyam) - this; आगतā (āgatā) - has come; आदिदेवम् (ādidevam) - the primordial god; अजम् (ajam) - unborn; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Vishnu; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - the person; पीतवाससम् (pītavāsasam) - yellow-robed one;]
(Having seen this tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, this memory has come to me: the primordial god, unborn Vishnu, the person, yellow-robed one.)
Having seen this tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, this memory has come to me—of the primordial god, the unborn Vishnu, the supreme person, clad in yellow garments. (03-187-54)
सर्वेषामेव भूतानां पिता माता च माधवः। गच्छध्वमेनं शरणं शरण्यं कौरवर्षभाः ॥०३-१८७-५५॥
sarveṣāmeva bhūtānāṃ pitā mātā ca mādhavaḥ। gacchadhvamenaṃ śaraṇaṃ śaraṇyaṃ kauravarṣabhāḥ ॥03-187-55॥
[सर्वेषामेव (sarveṣāmeva) - of all indeed; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava; गच्छध्वम् (gacchadhvam) - you all go; एनम् (enam) - to him; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; शरण्यम् (śaraṇyam) - who is the protector; कौरवर्षभाः (kauravarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the Kauravas;]
(Of all indeed beings, father, mother and Mādhava; you all go to him as refuge, who is the protector, bulls among the Kauravas.)
Mādhava is the father and mother of all beings; go to him for refuge, O bulls among the Kauravas, he is the protector. (03-187-55)
