ततश्चोरक्षयं कृत्वा द्विजेभ्यः पृथिवीमिमाम्। वाजिमेधे महायज्ञे विधिवत्कल्पयिष्यति ॥०३-१८९-१॥
tataś cōrakṣayaṁ kṛtvā dvijebhyaḥ pṛthivīm imām। vājimedhē mahā-yajñē vidhivat kalpayiṣyati ॥03-189-1॥
[ततश्च (tataḥ ca) - then also; उरक्षयम् (urakṣayam) - city-protection; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born (Brahmins); पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; वाजिमेधे (vājimedhē) - in the horse-sacrifice; महायज्ञे (mahā-yajñe) - in the great sacrifice; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; कल्पयिष्यति (kalpayiṣyati) - he will bestow;]
(Then also, having accomplished city-protection, to the twice-born this earth, in the horse-sacrifice, in the great sacrifice, according to rule, he will bestow.)
Then, having established the protection of the city, he will duly bestow this earth upon the Brahmins during the great horse-sacrifice. (03-189-1)
स्थापयित्वा स मर्यादाः स्वयम्भुविहिताः शुभाः। वनं पुण्ययशःकर्मा जरावान्संश्रयिष्यति ॥०३-१८९-२॥
sthaapayitvā sa maryādāḥ svayambhuvihitāḥ śubhāḥ। vanaṃ puṇya-yaśaḥ-karmā jarāvān saṃśrayiṣyati॥ 03-189-2॥
[स्थापयित्वा (sthaapayitvā) - having established; स (sa) - he; मर्यादाः (maryādāḥ) - boundaries; स्वयम्भु-विहिताः (svayambhuvihitāḥ) - ordained by Svayambhū (the Self-born); शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; वनम् (vanam) - the forest; पुण्य-यशः-कर्मा (puṇya-yaśaḥ-karmā) - one whose actions are meritorious and renowned; जरावान् (jarāvān) - afflicted by old age; संश्रयिष्यति (saṃśrayiṣyati) - will take refuge;]
(Having established the boundaries ordained by Svayambhū, auspicious, he, the one whose actions are meritorious and renowned, afflicted by old age, will take refuge in the forest.)

तच्छीलमनुवर्त्स्यन्ते मनुष्या लोकवासिनः। विप्रैश्चोरक्षये चैव कृते क्षेमं भविष्यति ॥०३-१८९-३॥
tacchīlam anuvartsyante manuṣyā lokavāsinaḥ। vipraiś corakṣaye caiva kṛte kṣemaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥03-189-3॥
[तच्छीलम् (tacchīlam) - that conduct; अनुवर्त्स्यन्ते (anuvartsyante) - will follow; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - humans; लोकवासिनः (lokavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of the world; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; ओरक्षये (orakṣaye) - when the theft is destroyed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कृते (kṛte) - when done; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - welfare; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(That conduct humans who dwell in the world will follow. By the brāhmaṇas, and when the theft is destroyed indeed, when done, welfare will be.)
The inhabitants of the world will follow that conduct. When brāhmaṇas act, and theft is eradicated, there will indeed be welfare. (03-189-3)
कृष्णाजिनानि शक्तीश्च त्रिशूलान्यायुधानि च। स्थापयन्विप्रशार्दूलो देशेषु विजितेषु च ॥०३-१८९-४॥
kṛṣṇājināni śaktīś ca triśūlāny āyudhāni ca। sthāpayan vipraśārdūlo deśeṣu vijiteṣu ca॥03-189-4॥
[कृष्णाजिनानि (kṛṣṇājināni) - black-deerskins; शक्तीः (śaktīḥ) - spears; च (ca) - and; त्रिशूलानि (triśūlāni) - tridents; आयुधानि (āyudhāni) - weapons; च (ca) - and; स्थापयन् (sthāpayan) - placing; विप्रशार्दूलः (vipraśārdūlaḥ) - the tiger among Brahmins; देशेषु (deśeṣu) - in the regions; विजितेषु (vijiteṣu) - in the conquered (lands); च (ca) - and;]
(Black-deerskins, spears and tridents, weapons and placing, the tiger among Brahmins in the regions and in the conquered (lands) and.)
Placing black-deerskins, spears, tridents, and other weapons, the tiger among Brahmins established them in the regions and in the conquered territories. (03-189-4)
संस्तूयमानो विप्रेन्द्रैर्मानयानो द्विजोत्तमान्। कल्किश्चरिष्यति महीं सदा दस्युवधे रतः ॥०३-१८९-५॥
saṁstūyamāno viprendrairmānayāno dvijottamān। kalkiś cariṣyati mahīṁ sadā dasyuvadhe rataḥ॥03-189-5॥
[संस्तूयमानः (saṁstūyamānaḥ) - being praised; विप्रेन्द्रैः (viprendraiḥ) - by best of Brāhmaṇas; मानयन् (mānayan) - honoring; द्विजोत्तमान् (dvijottamān) - the foremost of twice-born; कल्किः (kalkiḥ) - Kalki; च (ca) - and; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will roam; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; सदा (sadā) - always; दस्युवधे (dasyuvadhe) - in the destruction of miscreants; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged;]
(Being praised by the best of Brāhmaṇas, honoring the foremost twice-born, Kalki also will roam the earth always engaged in the destruction of miscreants.)
Kalki, honored by and honoring the foremost of Brāhmaṇas, will always roam the earth engaged in destroying miscreants. (03-189-5)
हा तात हा सुतेत्येवं तास्ता वाचः सुदारुणाः। विक्रोशमानान्सुभृशं दस्यून्नेष्यति सङ्क्षयम् ॥०३-१८९-६॥
hā tāta hā sute tyevaṃ tās tā vācaḥ sudāruṇāḥ. vikrośamānān subhṛśaṃ dasyūn neṣyati saṅkṣayam ॥03-189-6॥
[हा (hā) - alas; तात (tāta) - father; हा (hā) - alas; सुते (sute) - son; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; ताः (tāḥ) - those (feminine); ताः (tāḥ) - those (feminine); वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; सुदारुणाः (sudāruṇāḥ) - very harsh; विक्रोशमानान् (vikrośamānān) - wailing (masculine accusative plural); सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - exceedingly; दस्यून् (dasyūn) - robbers; नेष्यति (neṣyati) - will lead; सङ्क्षयम् (saṅkṣayam) - to destruction;]
(Alas father, alas son, thus in this way those very harsh words, the exceedingly wailing robbers, will lead to destruction.)
Those exceedingly harsh words — 'Alas, father! Alas, son!' — as they wail so intensely, will lead the robbers to destruction. (03-189-6)
ततोऽधर्मविनाशो वै धर्मवृद्धिश्च भारत। भविष्यति कृते प्राप्ते क्रियावांश्च जनस्तथा ॥०३-१८९-७॥
tato 'dharma-vināśo vai dharma-vṛddhiś ca bhārata। bhaviṣyati kṛte prāpte kriyāvāṁś ca janas tathā ॥03-189-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अधर्मविनाशः (adharma-vināśaḥ) - destruction of unrighteousness; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मवृद्धिः (dharma-vṛddhiḥ) - growth of righteousness; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will occur; कृते (kṛte) - when (the age of) Kṛta (sets in); प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when arrived; क्रियावान् (kriyāvān) - active in rites; च (ca) - and; जनः (janaḥ) - people; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Then destruction of unrighteousness indeed, and growth of righteousness, O Bhārata, will occur; when the Kṛta age arrives, people will also be active in rites thus.)
Then, O Bhārata, the destruction of unrighteousness and the growth of righteousness will occur; when the Kṛta age returns, people too will become devoted to rituals accordingly. (03-189-7)
आरामाश्चैव चैत्याश्च तटाकान्यवटास्तथा। यज्ञक्रियाश्च विविधा भविष्यन्ति कृते युगे ॥०३-१८९-८॥
ārāmāścaiva caityāśca taṭākānyavaṭāstathā। yajñakriyāśca vividhā bhaviṣyanti kṛte yuge ॥03-189-8॥
[आरामाः (ārāmāḥ) - pleasure-groves; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चैत्याः (caityāḥ) - shrines; च (ca) - and; तटाकानि (taṭākāni) - ponds; अवटाः (avaṭāḥ) - groves; तथा (tathā) - also; यज्ञक्रियाः (yajñakriyāḥ) - sacrificial-rituals; च (ca) - and; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - of various kinds; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; कृते (kṛte) - in the Kṛta (first) (age); युगे (yuge) - in the age;]
(Pleasure-groves and indeed shrines and ponds, groves also, and sacrificial-rituals of various kinds will be in the Kṛta age.)
In the Kṛta Yuga, there will be pleasure-groves, shrines, ponds, groves, and various kinds of sacrificial rituals. (03-189-8)
ब्राह्मणाः साधवश्चैव मुनयश्च तपस्विनः। आश्रमाः सहपाषण्डाः स्थिताः सत्ये जनाः प्रजाः ॥०३-१८९-९॥
brāhmaṇāḥ sādhavaś caiva munayaś ca tapasvinaḥ। āśramāḥ sahapāṣaṇḍāḥ sthitāḥ satye janāḥ prajāḥ॥03-189-9॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - virtuous men; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - ascetics; च (ca) - and; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - practitioners of austerity; आश्रमाः (āśramāḥ) - hermitages; सहपाषण्डाः (sahapāṣaṇḍāḥ) - together with heretics; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - established; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects;]
(Brāhmaṇas, virtuous men indeed, ascetics and practitioners of austerity, hermitages together with heretics, established in truth, people, subjects.)
Brāhmaṇas, virtuous people, ascetics and austerities, hermitages along with heretics, and all the people and subjects were established in truth. (03-189-9)
जास्यन्ति सर्वबीजानि उप्यमानानि चैव ह। सर्वेष्वृतुषु राजेन्द्र सर्वं सस्यं भविष्यति ॥०३-१८९-१०॥
jāsyanti sarva-bījāni upyamānāni caiva ha। sarveṣv ṛtuṣu rājendra sarvaṃ sasyaṃ bhaviṣyati॥03-189-10॥
[जास्यन्ति (jāsyanti) - will sprout; (from jan + as, to go forth, future, 3rd person plural); सर्वबीजानि (sarva-bījāni) - all seeds; उप्यमानानि (upyamānāni) - sown; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; ऋतुषु (ṛtuṣu) - seasons; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सस्यं (sasyaṃ) - crops; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will arise; will grow; (future, 3rd person singular, from √bhū 'to become');]
(All seeds, which are sown, indeed verily will sprout. In all seasons, O king, all crops will arise.)
O king, all seeds that are sown will certainly sprout, and in all seasons, all crops will grow. (03-189-10)
नरा दानेषु निरता व्रतेषु नियमेषु च। जपयज्ञपरा विप्रा धर्मकामा मुदा युताः ॥ पालयिष्यन्ति राजानो धर्मेणेमां वसुन्धराम् ॥०३-१८९-११॥
narā dāneṣu niratā vrateṣu niyameṣu ca। japayajñaparā viprā dharmakāmā mudā yutāḥ ॥ pālayiṣyanti rājāno dharmeṇemāṃ vasundharām ॥03-189-11॥
[नरा (narā) - men; दानेषु (dāneṣu) - in gifts; निरता (niratā) - engaged; व्रतेषु (vrateṣu) - in vows; नियमेषु (niyameṣu) - in observances; च (ca) - and; जपयज्ञपरा (japayajñaparā) - devoted to recitation-sacrifices; विप्रा (viprā) - brāhmaṇas; धर्मकामा (dharmakāmā) - desiring righteousness; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युताः (yutāḥ) - joined; पालयिष्यन्ति (pālayiṣyanti) - will protect; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; इमाम् (imām) - this; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - earth;]
(Men engaged in gifts, in vows, and in observances, brāhmaṇas devoted to recitation-sacrifices, desiring righteousness, joined with joy; kings will protect this earth by righteousness.)
Men will be absorbed in giving gifts, in observances and vows; brāhmaṇas will be intent on recitation and sacrifice, eager for righteousness and joined in joy; kings will protect this earth through righteousness. (03-189-11)
व्यवहाररता वैश्या भविष्यन्ति कृते युगे। षट्कर्मनिरता विप्राः क्षत्रिया रक्षणे रताः ॥०३-१८९-१२॥
vyavahāraratā vaiśyā bhaviṣyanti kṛte yuge। ṣaṭkarmaniratā viprāḥ kṣatriyā rakṣaṇe ratāḥ॥03-189-12॥
[व्यवहाररता (vyavahāraratā) - engaged in business; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; कृते (kṛte) - in the Kṛta (first) ; युगे (yuge) - age; षट्कर्मनिरता (ṣaṭkarmaniratāḥ) - engaged in six duties; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection; रताः (ratāḥ) - engaged;]
(Engaged in business, the Vaiśyas will be in the Kṛta age. Engaged in six duties, Brāhmaṇas; Kṣatriyas engaged in protection.)
In the Kṛta Yuga, Vaiśyas are engaged in trade, Brāhmaṇas are devoted to six duties, and Kṣatriyas are devoted to protection. (03-189-12)
शुश्रूषायां रताः शूद्रास्तथा वर्णत्रयस्य च। एष धर्मः कृतयुगे त्रेतायां द्वापरे तथा ॥ पश्चिमे युगकाले च यः स ते सम्प्रकीर्तितः ॥०३-१८९-१३॥
śuśrūṣāyāṃ ratāḥ śūdrās tathā varṇatrayasya ca। eṣa dharmaḥ kṛtayuge tretāyāṃ dvāpare tathā॥ paścime yugakāle ca yaḥ sa te samprakīrtitaḥ॥03-189-13॥
[शुश्रूषायाम् (śuśrūṣāyām) - in (the act of) service; रताः (ratāḥ) - engaged; शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - Śūdras; तथा (tathā) - also; वर्णत्रयस्य (varṇatrayasya) - of the three varṇas; च (ca) - and; एष (eṣa) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; कृतयुगे (kṛtayuge) - in the Kṛta Yuga; त्रेतायाम् (tretāyām) - in the Tretā Yuga; द्वापरे (dvāpare) - in the Dvāpara (Yuga); तथा (tathā) - also; पश्चिमे (paścime) - in the last; युगकाले (yugakāle) - period of the age; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - which; स (sa) - that; ते (te) - for you; सम्प्रकीर्तितः (samprakīrtitaḥ) - declared;]
(In service engaged Śūdras also of the three varṇas and; this duty in the Kṛta Yuga, in the Tretā Yuga, and in the Dvāpara likewise; in the last period of the age and which that for you is declared.)
Śūdras and the other three varṇas, engaged in service—this is the prescribed duty in the Kṛta Yuga, the Tretā, and also the Dvāpara; and in the last age, this is what has been declared for you. (03-189-13)
सर्वलोकस्य विदिता युगसङ्ख्या च पाण्डव। एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातमतीतानागतं मया ॥ वायुप्रोक्तमनुस्मृत्य पुराणमृषिसंस्तुतम् ॥०३-१८९-१४॥
sarvalokasya viditā yugasaṅkhyā ca pāṇḍava। etat te sarvam ākhyātam atītānāgatam mayā॥ vāyu-proktam anusmṛtya purāṇam ṛṣi-saṃstutam॥03-189-14॥
[सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all worlds; विदिता (viditā) - known; युगसङ्ख्या (yugasaṅkhyā) - the number of ages; च (ca) - and; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; अतीत (atīta) - past; अनागतं (anāgatam) - future; मया (mayā) - by me; वायुप्रोक्तम् (vāyu-proktam) - spoken by Vāyu; अनुस्मृत्य (anusmṛtya) - having recalled; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient (text); ऋषिसंस्तुतम् (ṛṣi-saṃstutam) - praised by sages;]
(Of all worlds, known the number of ages and, O Pāṇḍava, this all to you has been declared, past and future, by me. Spoken by Vāyu, having recalled the ancient (text) praised by sages.)
O Pāṇḍava, the number of ages known to all worlds has been declared to you by me—all that is past and future—after recalling the ancient Purāṇa spoken by Vāyu and praised by sages. (03-189-14)
एवं संसारमार्गा मे बहुशश्चिरजीविना। दृष्टाश्चैवानुभूताश्च तांस्ते कथितवानहम् ॥०३-१८९-१५॥
evaṁ saṁsāramārgā me bahuśaścirajīvinā। dṛṣṭāścaivānubhūtāśca tāṁste kathitavānaham ॥03-189-15॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; संसारमार्गाः (saṁsāramārgāḥ) - paths of worldly existence; मे (me) - by me; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; चिरजीविना (cirajīvinā) - by (one who is) long-lived; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - seen; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुभूताः (anubhūtāḥ) - experienced; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - those (things); ते (te) - to you; कथितवान् (kathitavān) - I have related; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Thus the paths of worldly existence by me, many times by the long-lived one, (have been) seen and indeed experienced, those to you I have related, I.)
Thus, I, being long-lived, have seen and experienced many times the paths of worldly existence, and I have related those to you. (03-189-15)
इदं चैवापरं भूयः सह भ्रातृभिरच्युत। धर्मसंशयमोक्षार्थं निबोध वचनं मम॥०३-१८९-१६॥
idaṃ caivāparaṃ bhūyaḥ saha bhrātṛbhiracyuta। dharmasaṃśayamokṣārthaṃ nibodha vacanaṃ mama॥03-189-16॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - surely; अपरं (aparaṃ) - another; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; सह (saha) - together with; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; धर्मसंशयमोक्षार्थं (dharmasaṃśayamokṣārtham) - for the resolution of doubt about dharma; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - speech; मम (mama) - my;]
(This and also another (topic), further, together with (your) brothers, O Acyuta, for the resolution of a doubt about dharma, listen (to) my speech.)
O Acyuta, together with your brothers, listen to this, and also to another subject I am about to tell for the resolution of a doubt about dharma. (03-189-16)
धर्मे त्वयात्मा संयोज्यो नित्यं धर्मभृतां वर। धर्मात्मा हि सुखं राजा प्रेत्य चेह च नन्दति ॥०३-१८९-१७॥
dharme tvayātmā saṃyojyo nityaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ vara। dharmātmā hi sukhaṃ rājā pretya ceha ca nandati ॥03-189-17॥
[धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; संयोज्यः (saṃyojyaḥ) - should be united; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - O best; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - one whose nature is dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after dying; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; नन्दति (nandati) - rejoices;]
(In dharma, by you, the self should be joined always, O best of the upholders of dharma. One whose nature is dharma, indeed, happiness the king after death and here also enjoys.)
O best of those who uphold dharma, you should always unite yourself with dharma. A king whose nature is dharma indeed enjoys happiness both here and after death. (03-189-17)
निबोध च शुभां वाणीं यां प्रवक्ष्यामि तेऽनघ। न ब्राह्मणे परिभवः कर्तव्यस्ते कदाचन ॥ ब्राह्मणो रुषितो हन्यादपि लोकान्प्रतिज्ञया ॥०३-१८९-१८॥
nibodha ca śubhāṃ vāṇīṃ yāṃ pravakṣyāmi te'nagha। na brāhmaṇe paribhavaḥ kartavyas te kadācana॥ brāhmaṇo ruṣito hanyād api lokān pratijñayā॥03-189-18॥
[निबोध (nibodha) - understand; च (ca) - and; शुभां (śubhām) - auspicious; वाणीं (vāṇīm) - speech; यां (yām) - which; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall tell; ते (te) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; न (na) - not; ब्राह्मणे (brāhmaṇe) - in (regard to) a Brāhmaṇa; परिभवः (paribhavaḥ) - insult; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - should be done; ते (te) - by you; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; रुषितः (ruṣitaḥ) - angered; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may destroy; अपि (api) - even; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; प्रतिज्ञया (pratijñayā) - by resolve; ॥०३-१८९-१८॥ (03-189-18) - ;]
(Understand, and the auspicious speech which I shall tell to you, O sinless one. Not in (regard to) a Brāhmaṇa should insult ever be done by you. A Brāhmaṇa, angered, may destroy even worlds by resolve. (03-189-18))
O sinless one, listen now to the auspicious words I will say. Never should you insult a Brāhmaṇa; for when angered, a Brāhmaṇa may by his resolve even destroy worlds. (03-189-18)

मार्कण्डेयवचः श्रुत्वा कुरूणां प्रवरो नृपः। उवाच वचनं धीमान्परमं परमद्युतिः ॥०३-१८९-१९॥
mārkaṇḍeyavacaḥ śrutvā kurūṇāṃ pravaro nṛpaḥ। uvāca vacanaṃ dhīmān paramaṃ paramadyutiḥ ॥03-189-19॥
[मार्कण्डेयवचः (mārkaṇḍeya-vacaḥ) - the speech of Mārkaṇḍeya; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कुरूणां (kurūṇām) - of the Kuru (dynasty’s persons); प्रवरो (pravaraḥ) - the foremost; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; वचनं (vacanam) - the words; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise one; परमं (paramam) - supreme; परमद्युतिः (paramadyutiḥ) - of supreme splendor;]
(Having heard the speech of Mārkaṇḍeya, the foremost king of the Kurus, the wise one of supreme splendor spoke supreme words.)
Hearing Mārkaṇḍeya’s speech, the chief among the Kuru kings, wise and resplendent, spoke these exalted words. (03-189-19)
कस्मिन्धर्मे मया स्थेयं प्रजाः संरक्षता मुने। कथं च वर्तमानो वै न च्यवेयं स्वधर्मतः ॥०३-१८९-२०॥
kasmin dharme mayā stheyaṃ prajāḥ saṃrakṣatā mune। kathaṃ ca vartamāno vai na cyaveyaṃ svadharmataḥ॥03-189-20॥
[कस्मिन्धर्मे (kasmin dharme) - in which dharma; मया (mayā) - by me; स्थेयं (stheyaṃ) - should be established; should be abided; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; संरक्षता (saṃrakṣatā) - by the protector; मुने (mune) - O sage; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - while abiding; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; च्यवेयम् (cyaveyam) - should I deviate; स्वधर्मतः (svadharmataḥ) - from one's own dharma;]
(In which dharma, by me, should be abided, (when) the subjects are protected, O sage? And how, while indeed abiding (in it), should I not deviate from my own dharma?)
O sage, in which dharma should I abide when protecting the subjects? And how, while abiding in it, shall I not deviate from my own duty? (03-189-20)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

Markaṇḍeya said.
दयावान्सर्वभूतेषु हितो रक्तोऽनसूयकः। अपत्यानामिव स्वेषां प्रजानां रक्षणे रतः ॥ चर धर्मं त्यजाधर्मं पितॄन्देवांश्च पूजय ॥०३-१८९-२१॥
dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu hito rakto'nasūyakaḥ। apatyānām iva sveṣāṃ prajānāṃ rakṣaṇe rataḥ ॥ cara dharmaṃ tyajādharmam pitṝn devāṃś ca pūjaya ॥03-189-21॥
[दयावान् (dayāvān) - compassionate; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - towards all beings; हितः (hitaḥ) - beneficial; रक्तः (raktaḥ) - affectionate; अनसूयकः (anasūyakaḥ) - free from envy; अपत्यानाम् (apatyānām) - of offspring; इव (iva) - like; स्वेषाम् (sveṣām) - of one's own; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of subjects; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection; रतः (rataḥ) - devoted; चर (cara) - practice; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; त्यज (tyaja) - abandon; अधर्मम् (adharmaṃ) - unrighteousness; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; देवान् (devān) - gods; च (ca) - and; पूजय (pūjaya) - honour;]
(Compassionate towards all beings, beneficial, affectionate, free from envy; like a father to his own offspring, devoted to the protection of his subjects. Practice righteousness, abandon unrighteousness, honour the ancestors and the gods. (03-189-21))
Be compassionate to all beings, act for their benefit, be loving and free from envy; like a father to his own children, be devoted to the protection of your people. Practice virtue, renounce vice, and honour both the ancestors and the gods. (03-189-21)
प्रमादाद्यत्कृतं तेऽभूत्संयग्दानेन तज्जय। अलं ते मानमाश्रित्य सततं परवान्भव ॥०३-१८९-२२॥
pramādādyatkṛtaṁ te'bhūtsaṁyagdānena tajjaya। alaṁ te mānamāśritya satataṁ paravānbhava ॥03-189-22॥
[प्रमादात् (pramādāt) - from carelessness; यत् (yat) - whatever; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; ते (te) - by you; अभूत् (abhūt) - has happened; संयग् (saṁyag) - rightly; दानेन (dānena) - with charity; तत् (tat) - that; जय (jaya) - conquer; अलं (alaṁ) - enough; ते (te) - for you; मानम् (mānam) - pride; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - by taking refuge in; सततम् (satatam) - always; परवान् (paravān) - dependent on others; भव (bhava) - be;]
(From carelessness whatever done by you has happened; rightly with charity conquer that. Enough for you by taking refuge in pride always be dependent on others.)
Whatever you have done out of carelessness has already occurred; make amends for that properly with charity. Avoid taking pride—do not always become dependent on others. (03-189-22)
विजित्य पृथिवीं सर्वां मोदमानः सुखी भव। एष भूतो भविष्यश्च धर्मस्ते समुदीरितः ॥०३-१८९-२३॥
vijitya pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ modamānaḥ sukhī bhava। eṣa bhūto bhaviṣyaś ca dharmas te samudīritaḥ॥03-189-23॥
[विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth (accusative singular, feminine); सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - all; मोदमानः (modamānaḥ) - rejoicing; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; भव (bhava) - be; एष (eṣa) - this; भूतः (bhūtaḥ) - past; भविष्यः (bhaviṣyaḥ) - future; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; ते (te) - for you; समुदीरितः (samudīritaḥ) - has been declared;]
(Having conquered all the earth, rejoicing, happy be. This past and future duty for you has been declared.)
Conquer all the earth, rejoice, and be happy. This duty for you, both past and future, has been declared. (03-189-23)
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चिदतीतानागतं भुवि। तस्मादिमं परिक्लेशं त्वं तात हृदि मा कृथाः ॥०३-१८९-२४॥
na te'sty aviditaṃ kiñcid atītānāgataṃ bhuvi. tasmād imaṃ parikleśaṃ tvaṃ tāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ ॥03-189-24॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; for you; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अविदितं (aviditaṃ) - unknown; not known; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; even a little; अतीतानागतं (atītānāgatam) - past or future; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इमं (imaṃ) - this; परिक्लेशं (parikleśam) - affliction; great distress; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तात (tāta) - dear one; father; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (your) heart; मा (mā) - do not; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make; cause;]
(Not for you there is anything unknown, past or future, on earth. Therefore, this great affliction you, dear one, in (your) heart do not make.)
There is nothing unknown to you, whether past or future, on earth. Therefore, dear one, do not cause this great distress in your heart. (03-189-24)
एष कालो महाबाहो अपि सर्वदिवौकसाम्। मुह्यन्ति हि प्रजास्तात कालेनाभिप्रचोदिताः ॥०३-१८९-२५॥
eṣa kālo mahābāho api sarvadivaukasām। muhyanti hi prajāstāta kālenābhipracoditāḥ॥03-189-25॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; कालो (kālo) - time; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; अपि (api) - even; सर्वदिवौकसाम् (sarvadivaukasām) - of all dwellers in heaven; मुह्यन्ति (muhyanti) - become deluded; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रजास्तात (prajāstāta) - O dear one, the beings; कालेन (kālena) - by time; अभिप्रचोदिताः (abhipracoditāḥ) - impelled;]
(This time, O mighty-armed, even of all dwellers in heaven, become deluded indeed, O dear one, the beings, by time impelled.)
O mighty-armed one, this Time, even for all the heavenly dwellers, causes beings, dear one, to become deluded, being impelled by Time. (03-189-25)
मा च तेऽत्र विचारो भूद्यन्मयोक्तं तवानघ। अतिशङ्क्य वचो ह्येतद्धर्मलोपो भवेत्तव ॥०३-१८९-२६॥
mā ca te'tra vicāro bhūdyanmayoktaṃ tavānagha। atiśaṅkya vaco hyetaddharmalopo bhavettava ॥03-189-26॥
[मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - for you; अत्र (atra) - here; विचारः (vicāraḥ) - deliberation; भूत् (bhūt) - should be; यत् (yat) - which; मया (mayā) - by me; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - has been said; तव (tava) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless; अतिशङ्क्य (atiśaṅkya) - excessively doubting; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; धर्मलोपः (dharmalopaḥ) - loss of dharma; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Do not and for you here deliberation should be which by me has been said by you, O sinless. Excessively doubting word indeed this, loss of dharma may be for you.)
O sinless one, do not entertain any deliberation here upon what has been said by me to you. For if you excessively doubt this word, it may result in loss of righteousness for you. (03-189-26)
जातोऽसि प्रथिते वंशे कुरूणां भरतर्षभ। कर्मणा मनसा वाचा सर्वमेतत्समाचर ॥०३-१८९-२७॥
jāto'si prathite vaṃśe kurūṇāṃ bharatarṣabha। karmaṇā manasā vācā sarvam etat samācara ॥03-189-27॥
[जातः (jātaḥ) - born; असि (asi) - you are; प्रथिते (prathite) - celebrated; वंशे (vaṃśe) - in the lineage; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; समाचर (samācara) - perform;]
(You are born in the celebrated lineage of the Kurus, O bull among the Bharatas. By action, by mind, by speech, perform all this.)
O foremost among the Bharatas, you are born in the celebrated lineage of the Kurus. Perform all this by action, mind, and speech. (03-189-27)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhishthira said.
यत्त्वयोक्तं द्विजश्रेष्ठ वाक्यं श्रुतिमनोहरम्। तथा करिष्ये यत्नेन भवतः शासनं विभो ॥०३-१८९-२८॥
yat tvayoktaṃ dvijaśreṣṭha vākyaṃ śrutimanoharam। tathā kariṣye yatnena bhavataḥ śāsanaṃ vibho ॥03-189-28॥
[यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - sentence; श्रुतिमनोहरम् (śrutimanoharam) - delightful to hear; तथा (tathā) - thus; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; शासनम् (śāsanam) - order; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Which by you spoken O best of twice-born sentence delightful to hear, thus I shall do with effort your order, O lord.)
O best of the twice-born, that statement of yours which is delightful to hear—such as you have spoken—I shall carry out your command with effort, O lord. (03-189-28)
न मे लोभोऽस्ति विप्रेन्द्र न भयं न च मत्सरः। करिष्यामि हि तत्सर्वमुक्तं यत्ते मयि प्रभो ॥०३-१८९-२९॥
na me lobho'sti viprendra na bhayaṁ na ca matsaraḥ। kariṣyāmi hi tatsarvam uktaṁ yat te mayi prabho॥03-189-29॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; लोभः (lobhaḥ) - greed; अस्ति (asti) - exists; विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; न (na) - not; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मत्सरः (matsaraḥ) - envy; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - by you; मयि (mayi) - towards me; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Not to me greed exists, O best of Brāhmaṇas, not fear, not and envy. I will indeed do all that spoken which by you towards me, O lord.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, I have no greed, no fear, nor any envy. Indeed, O lord, I will do everything you have spoken to me. (03-189-29)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (a sage's name); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; said;]

Vaiśampāyana said.
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्य पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः। प्रहृष्टाः पाण्डवा राजन्सहिताः शार्ङ्गधन्वना ॥०३-१८९-३०॥
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ tasya pāṇḍavasya mahātmanaḥ। prahṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavā rājan sahitāḥ śārṅgadhanvanā ॥03-189-30॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; तस्य (tasya) - his; पाण्डवस्य (pāṇḍavasya) - of the Pāṇḍava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; प्रहृष्टाः (prahṛṣṭāḥ) - delighted; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together with; शार्ङ्गधन्वना (śārṅgadhanvanā) - with the wielder of the Śārṅga bow;]
(Having heard but the speech of that great-souled Pāṇḍava, delighted the Pāṇḍavas, O king, together with the wielder of the Śārṅga bow.)
O king, upon hearing the words of that great-souled Pāṇḍava, the Pāṇḍavas became delighted, together with the wielder of the Śārṅga bow. (03-189-30)
तथा कथां शुभां श्रुत्वा मार्कण्डेयस्य धीमतः। विस्मिताः समपद्यन्त पुराणस्य निवेदनात् ॥०३-१८९-३१॥
tathā kathāṁ śubhāṁ śrutvā mārkaṇḍeyasya dhīmataḥ. vismitāḥ samapadyanta purāṇasya nivedanāt ॥03-189-31॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; कथां (kathām) - story (accusative singular); शुभां (śubhām) - auspicious; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मार्कण्डेयस्य (mārkaṇḍeyasya) - of Mārkaṇḍeya; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; समपद्यन्त (samapadyanta) - became; पुराणस्य (purāṇasya) - of the Purāṇa; निवेदनात् (nivedanāt) - from the narration;]
(Thus, the auspicious story having been heard, of wise Mārkaṇḍeya, astonished they became from the narration of the Purāṇa.)
Thus, hearing the auspicious story of the wise Mārkaṇḍeya, they became astonished at the narration of the Purāṇa. (03-189-31)
