भूय एव ब्राह्मणमहाभाग्यं वक्तुमर्हसीत्यब्रवीत्पाण्डवेयो मार्कण्डेयम् ॥०३-१९०-१॥
bhūya eva brāhmaṇamahābhāgyaṃ vaktum arhasi ity abravīt pāṇḍaveyo mārkaṇḍeyam ॥03-190-1॥
[भूय (bhūya) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; ब्राह्मणमहाभाग्यं (brāhmaṇa-mahā-bhāgyam) - the great fortune of the Brāhmaṇa; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - (you) should; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पाण्डवेयः (pāṇḍaveyaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; मार्कण्डेयम् (mārkaṇḍeyam) - to Mārkaṇḍeya;]
(Again indeed the great fortune of the Brāhmaṇa to speak you should thus said the son of Pāṇḍu to Mārkaṇḍeya.)
The son of Pāṇḍu said to Mārkaṇḍeya, "You should speak again about the great fortune of the Brāhmaṇa." (03-190-1)

तमेकाश्वेन मृगमनुसरन्तं मृगो दूरमपाहरत् ॥०३-१९०-४॥
tam-ekāśvena mṛgam-anusarantam mṛgaḥ dūram-apāharat ॥03-190-4॥

अथाध्वनि जातश्रमः क्षुत्तृष्णाभिभूतश्च कस्मिंश्चिदुद्देशे नीलं वनषण्डमपश्यत् तच्च विवेश ॥०३-१९०-५॥
athādhvani jātaśramaḥ kṣut-tṛṣṇābhibhūtaś ca kasmiṁścid uddeśe nīlaṁ vanaśaṇḍam apaśyat tac ca viveśa ॥03-190-5॥

(Then on the journey, becoming weary, overcome by hunger and thirst, and in some place, a dark-blue grove he saw; that, and he entered.)

ततस्तस्य वनषण्डस्य मध्येऽतीव रमणीयं सरो दृष्ट्वा साश्व एव व्यगाहत ॥०३-१९०-६॥

(Then of that forest-grove in the middle very beautiful lake having seen with horse indeed entered.)
Then, having seen a very beautiful lake in the middle of that forest-grove, he entered it with his horse. (03-190-6)
अथाश्वस्तः स बिसमृणालमश्वस्याग्रे निक्षिप्य पुष्करिणीतीरे समाविशत् ॥०३-१९०-७॥
athāśvastaḥ sa bisamṛṇālam aśvasya agre nikṣipya puṣkariṇī-tīre samāviśat ॥03-190-7॥

(Then, relieved, he having placed the lotus-fibre in front of the horse, on the bank of the pond, entered.)

ततः शयानो मधुरं गीतशब्दमशृणोत् ॥०३-१९०-८॥
tataḥ śayāno madhuraṃ gītaśabdam aśṛṇot ॥03-190-8॥

स श्रुत्वाचिन्तयत् नेह मनुष्यगतिं पश्यामि कस्य खल्वयं गीतशब्द इति ॥०३-१९०-९॥
sa śrutvā cintayat neha manuṣya-gatiṁ paśyāmi kasya khalv ayaṁ gīta-śabda iti ॥03-190-9॥
[स (sa) - he; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; चिन्तयत् (cintayat) - thought; नेह (na iha) - not here; मनुष्यगतिं (manuṣya-gatim) - human movement; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; खलु (khalu) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; गीतशब्दः (gīta-śabdaḥ) - song-sound; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He, having heard, thought: not here human movement I see; of whom indeed this song-sound thus.)
He, having heard it, thought: "I do not perceive any human movement here. Whose indeed is this singing sound?" (03-190-9)
अथापश्यत्कन्यां परमरूपदर्शनीयां पुष्पाण्यवचिन्वतीं गायन्तीं च ॥०३-१९०-१०॥
athāpaśyat kanyāṃ paramarūpadarśanīyāṃ puṣpāṇy avacinvatīṃ gāyantīṃ ca ॥03-190-10॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; परमरूपदर्शनीयां (paramarūpadarśanīyāṃ) - of supreme beauty, worthy to be seen; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; अवचिन्वतीं (avacinvatīṃ) - collecting; गायन्तीं (gāyantīṃ) - singing; च (ca) - and;]
(Then he saw a maiden of supreme beauty, collecting flowers, and singing also.)

अथ सा राज्ञः समीपे पर्यक्रामत् ॥०३-१९०-११॥
atha sā rājñaḥ samīpe paryakrāmat ॥03-190-11॥

तामब्रवीद्राजा कस्यासि सुभगे त्वमिति ॥०३-१९०-१२॥
tām abravīd rājā kasyāsi subhage tvam iti ॥03-190-12॥
[ताम् (tām) - to her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजा (rājā) - the king; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; असि (asi) - are (you); सुभगे (subhage) - fortunate lady; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इति (iti) - thus;]
(To her said the king, 'Of whom are you, O fortunate lady, you?' thus.)
The king said to her, 'O fortunate lady, whose are you?' (03-190-12)
सा प्रत्युवाच कन्यास्मीति ॥०३-१९०-१३॥
sā pratyuvāca kanyā asmi iti ॥03-190-13॥
[सा (sā) - she; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; कन्या (kanyā) - girl; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus;]
(She replied, "I am a girl.")
She replied, "I am a girl." (03-190-13)
तां राजोवाच अर्थी त्वयाहमिति ॥०३-१९०-१४॥
tāṁ rājovāca arthī tvayāhamiti ॥03-190-14॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; राजा ऊवाच (rājā ūvāca) - the king spoke; अर्थी (arthī) - one who seeks; a supplicant; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Her the king spoke: 'I am a supplicant by you.' thus.)
The king said to her: 'I am a supplicant to you.' (03-190-14)
अथोवाच कन्या समयेनाहं शक्या त्वया लब्धुम् नान्यथेति ॥०३-१९०-१५॥
athovāca kanyā samayenāhaṃ śakyā tvayā labdhum nānyatheti ॥03-190-15॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; कन्या (kanyā) - the girl; समयेन (samayena) - by agreement; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शक्या (śakyā) - can be; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; लब्धुम् (labdhum) - to be obtained; न (na) - not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then spoke the girl: 'By agreement, I can be obtained by you, not otherwise' thus.)
Then the girl said: "I can be gained by you only by agreement, not otherwise." (03-190-15)
तां राजा समयमपृच्छत् ॥०३-१९०-१६॥
tāṃ rājā samayam apṛcchat ॥03-190-16॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; राजा (rājā) - the king; समयम् (samayam) - the agreement; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked;]
(Her the king the agreement asked.)
The king asked her about the agreement. (03-190-16)
ततः कन्येदमुवाच उदकं मे न दर्शयितव्यमिति ॥०३-१९०-१७॥
tataḥ kanyedamuvāca udakaṃ me na darśayitavyamiti ॥03-190-17॥

स राजा बाढमित्युक्त्वा तां समागम्य तया सहास्ते ॥०३-१९०-१८॥
sa rājā bāḍham ity uktvā tāṃ samāgamya tayā saha āste ॥03-190-18॥

तत्रैवासीने राजनि सेनान्वगच्छत् पदेनानुपदं दृष्ट्वा राजानं परिवार्यातिष्ठत् ॥०३-१९०-१९॥
tatraivāsīne rājani senānvagacchat padenānupadaṃ dṛṣṭvā rājānaṃ parivāryātiṣṭhat ॥03-190-19॥

paryāśvastaś ca rājā tayaiva saha śibikayā prāyād avighāṭitayā sva-nagaram anuprāpya rahasi tayā saha ramann āste nānyat kiñcanāpaśyat ॥03-190-20॥

(Reassured, and the king, with her only, together, by palanquin, departed, undisclosed, his own city, having reached, in secret, with her, together, enjoying, he remains, not, anything else, he saw.)
Reassured, the king departed secretly by palanquin with her alone, reached his own city, and staying with her in private, enjoyed himself; he saw nothing else. (03-190-20)
अथ प्रधानामात्यस्तस्याभ्याशचराः स्त्रियोऽपृच्छत् किमत्र प्रयोजनं वर्तत इति ॥०३-१९०-२१॥
atha pradhānāmātyas tasyābhyāśacarāḥ striyo'pṛcchat kim atra prayojanaṃ vartata iti ॥03-190-21॥

(Then the chief minister, attendants of him, asked the women, "What purpose is here thus?" (03-190-21))

अथाब्रुवंस्ताः स्त्रियः अपूर्वमिव पश्याम उदकं नात्र नीयतेति ॥०३-१९०-२२॥
athābruvaṃstāḥ striyaḥ apūrvamiva paśyāma udakaṃ nātra nīyatetīti ॥03-190-22॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; ताः (tāḥ) - those; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; अपूर्वम् (apūrvam) - unprecedented; इव (iva) - as if; पश्याम (paśyāma) - we see; उदकम् (udakam) - water; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; नीयते (nīyate) - is led (brought); इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then those women said: "As if we see unprecedented water, not here is brought," thus.)
Then those women said: "It appears as if we see unprecedented water, but water is not brought here." (03-190-22)
अथामात्योऽनुदकं वनं कारयित्वोदारवृक्षं बहुमूलपुष्पफलं रहस्युपगम्य राजानमब्रवीत् वनमिदमुदारमनुदकम् साध्वत्र रम्यतामिति ॥०३-१९०-२३॥
athāmātyo'nudakaṃ vanaṃ kārayitvodāravṛkṣaṃ bahumūlapuṣpaphalaṃ rahasyupagamya rājānamabravīt vanamidamudāramanudakam sādhatra ramyatāmiti ॥03-190-23॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अमात्यः (amātyaḥ) - the minister; अनुदकं (anudakam) - without water; वनं (vanam) - forest; कारयित्वा (kārayitvā) - having caused to be made; उदारवृक्षं (udāra-vṛkṣam) - with noble trees; बहुमूलपुष्पफलं (bahu-mūla-puṣpa-phalām) - with many roots, flowers, and fruits; रहस्युपगम्य (rahasy-upagamya) - approaching privately; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वनम् (vanam) - forest; इदम् (idam) - this; उदारं (udāram) - noble; अनुदकम् (anudakam) - without water; साधु (sādhu) - well; अत्र (atra) - here; रम्यताम् (ramyatām) - let (someone) enjoy; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then the minister, having caused a waterless forest with noble trees and many roots, flowers, and fruits to be made, approaching the king privately, said: "This forest is noble and waterless; well, let enjoyment be done here," thus.)
Then the minister, after creating a waterless forest filled with noble trees and abundant roots, flowers, and fruits, privately approached the king and said, "This forest is noble and without water; it would be good to enjoy here." (03-190-23)
स तस्य वचनात्तयैव सह देव्या तद्वनं प्राविशत्त स कदाचित्तस्मिन्वने रम्ये तयैव सह व्यवहरत् अथ क्षुत्तृष्णार्दितः श्रान्तोऽतिमात्रमतिमुक्तागारमपश्यत् ॥०३-१९०-२४॥
sa tasya vacanāt tayā eva saha devyā tad vanaṃ prāviśat sa kadācit tasmin vane ramye tayā eva saha vyavaharati atha kṣut-tṛṣṇā-arditaḥ śrāntaḥ atimātram ati-mukta-āgāram apaśyat ॥03-190-24॥
[स (sa) - he; तस्य (tasya) - her; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the word; तया एव (tayā eva) - with her indeed; सह (saha) - together; देव्या (devyā) - with the goddess; तत् (tat) - that; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; स (sa) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; तस्मिन् वने (tasmin vane) - in that forest; रम्ये (ramye) - pleasant; तया एव (tayā eva) - with her indeed; सह (saha) - together; व्यवहरत् (vyavaharati) - conducted himself; अथ (atha) - then; क्षुत्-तृष्णा-अर्दितः (kṣut-tṛṣṇā-arditaḥ) - afflicted by hunger and thirst; श्रान्तः (śrāntaḥ) - fatigued; अतिमात्रम् (atimātram) - excessively; अति-मुक्त-आगारम् (ati-mukta-āgāram) - abandoned house; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw;]
(He, from her word, with her indeed, together with the goddess, that forest entered. He, once, in that pleasant forest, with her indeed, together, conducted himself. Then afflicted by hunger and thirst, fatigued, excessively, an abandoned house he saw.)
He, following her word, entered that forest together with the goddess herself. Once, while he was in that pleasant forest, he spent time with her. Then, afflicted by hunger and thirst and greatly fatigued, he saw an abandoned house. (3-190-24)
तत्प्रविश्य राजा सह प्रियया सुधातलसुकृतां विमलसलिलपूर्णां वापीमपश्यत् ॥०३-१९०-२५॥
tat praviśya rājā saha priyayā sudhātala-sukṛtāṃ vimala-salila-pūrṇāṃ vāpīm apaśyat ॥03-190-25॥
[तत् (tat) - then; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; राजा (rājā) - the king; सह (saha) - with; प्रियया (priyayā) - (his) beloved; सुधातलसुकृतां (sudhātala-sukṛtām) - well-constructed on a foundation of nectar; विमलसलिलपूर्णां (vimala-salila-pūrṇām) - filled with pure water; वापीम् (vāpīm) - reservoir; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw;]
(Then, having entered, the king with his beloved saw a reservoir well-constructed on a foundation of nectar, filled with pure water.)
Then the king, together with his beloved, entered and saw a reservoir, beautifully built on a nectarean foundation and filled with pure water. (03-190-25)
दृष्ट्वैव च तां तस्या एव तीरे सहैव तया देव्या व्यतिष्ठत् ॥०३-१९०-२६॥

(Having seen her, and on her bank, together indeed with that queen, stood.)

अथ तां देवीं स राजाब्रवीत् साध्ववतर वापीसलिलमिति ॥०३-१९०-२७॥
atha tāṃ devīṃ sa rājā abravīt sādhu avatara vāpī-salilam iti ॥03-190-27॥

Then the king said to the goddess, "O virtuous one, descend into the pond water." (03-190-27)
सा तद्वचः श्रुत्वावतीर्य वापीं न्यमज्जत् न पुनरुदमज्जत् ॥०३-१९०-२८॥
sā tadvacaḥ śrutvā avatīrya vāpīṃ nyamajjat na punar udamajjat ॥03-190-28॥
[सा (sā) - she; तद्वचः (tadvacaḥ) - that speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; वापीं (vāpīṃ) - into the pond; न्यमज्जत् (nyamajjat) - she sank; न (na) - not; पुनः (punar) - again; उदमज्जत् (udamajjat) - she rose up;]
(She, that speech having heard, having descended into the pond, sank; not again did she rise up.)
She, having heard that speech, descended into the pond, sank, and did not rise up again. (03-190-28)
तां मृगयमाणो राजा नापश्यत् ॥०३-१९०-२९॥
tāṃ mṛgayamāṇo rājā nāpaśyat ॥03-190-29॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; (accusative singular feminine); मृगयमाणः (mṛgayamāṇaḥ) - seeking; pursuing; राजा (rājā) - the king; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; (3rd person singular past);]
(Her seeking the king did not see.)
The king, seeking her, did not see (her). (03-190-29)
वापीमपि निःस्राव्य मण्डूकं श्वभ्रमुखे दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्ध आज्ञापयामास सर्वमण्डूकवधः क्रियतामिति यो मयार्थी स मृतकैर्मण्डूकैरुपायनैर्मामुपतिष्ठेदिति ॥०३-१९०-३०॥
vāpīm api niḥsrāvya maṇḍūkaṃ śvabhramukhe dṛṣṭvā kruddha ājñāpayāmāsa sarva-maṇḍūka-vadhaḥ kriyatām iti yo may arthī sa mṛtakaiḥ maṇḍūkaiḥ upāyanaiḥ mām upatiṣṭhet iti ॥03-190-30॥
[वापीम् (vāpīm) - tank; (accusative singular); अपि (api) - even; also; निःस्राव्य (niḥsrāvya) - having drained; letting flow out; मण्डूकं (maṇḍūkam) - frog; (accusative singular); श्वभ्रमुखे (śvabhramukhe) - in the mouth of a jackal; at the jackal's mouth; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; क्रुद्ध (kruddha) - angry; enraged; आज्ञापयामास (ājñāpayāmāsa) - ordered; commanded; सर्वमण्डूकवधः (sarva-maṇḍūka-vadhaḥ) - all-frogs-killing; the killing of all the frogs; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; should be done; इति (iti) - thus; so; यः (yaḥ) - who; मयि (mayi) - to me; in regard to me; अर्थी (arthī) - seeker; one who seeks (favor); सः (saḥ) - he; मृतकैः (mṛtakaiḥ) - with dead; by means of dead; मण्डूकैः (maṇḍūkaiḥ) - frogs; (instrumental plural); उपायनैः (upāyanaiḥ) - as gifts; offerings; माम् (mām) - me; उपतिष्ठेत् (upatiṣṭhet) - should approach; wait upon; इति (iti) - thus; so;]
(Even draining the tank, having seen the frog at the mouth of the jackal, enraged he commanded: 'Let the killing of all the frogs be done thus; he who is a seeker from me should wait upon me with dead frogs as offerings.')
Having even drained the tank and seeing a frog in the mouth of a jackal, he became angry and ordered: 'Let all the frogs be killed in this way; whoever desires my favor must come to me with dead frogs as gifts.' (03-190-30)
अथ मण्डूकवधे घोरे क्रियमाणे दिक्षु सर्वासु मण्डूकान्भयमाविशत् ते भीता मण्डूकराज्ञे यथावृत्तं न्यवेदयन् ॥०३-१९०-३१॥
atha maṇḍūkavadhe ghore kriyamāṇe dikṣu sarvāsu maṇḍūkānbhayamāviśat te bhītā maṇḍūkarājñe yathāvṛttaṁ nyavedayan ॥03-190-31॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मण्डूकवधे (maṇḍūkavadhe) - frog-killing; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; क्रियमाणे (kriyamāṇe) - being done; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; मण्डूकान् (maṇḍūkān) - frogs; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; ते (te) - they; भीता (bhītā) - afraid; मण्डूकराज्ञे (maṇḍūkarājñe) - to the frog king; यथावृत्तं (yathāvṛttam) - what had happened; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - reported;]
(Then, when the terrible frog-killing was being done in all directions, fear entered the frogs; they, afraid, to the frog king, what had happened, reported.)
Then, as the dreadful slaughter of frogs was taking place in all directions, fear entered the frogs; being frightened, they reported what had happened to the frog king. (03-190-31)
ततो मण्डूकराट्तापसवेषधारी राजानमभ्यगच्छत् ॥०३-१९०-३२॥
tato maṇḍūkarāṭ tāpasaveṣadhārī rājānam abhyagacchat ॥03-190-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मण्डूकराट् (maṇḍūkarāṭ) - king of frogs; तापसवेषधारी (tāpasaveṣadhārī) - one who has ascetic guise; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached;]
(Then the king of frogs, having assumed an ascetic guise, approached the king.)
Then the king of frogs, in the guise of an ascetic, approached the king. (3-190-32)
उपेत्य चैनमुवाच
upetya ca enam uvāca
[उपेत्य (upetya) - having approached; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Having approached and him said;)
Having approached, he said to him.
मा राजन्क्रोधवशं गमः प्रसादं कुरु नार्हसि मण्डूकानामनपराधिनां वधं कर्तुमिति ॥०३-१९०-३३॥
mā rājan krodhavaśaṃ gamaḥ prasādaṃ kuru nār'hasi maṇḍūkānām anaparādhināṃ vadhaṃ kartum iti ॥03-190-33॥
[मा (mā) - do not; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्रोधवशं (krodhavaśam) - under the control of anger; गमः (gamaḥ) - go; प्रसादं (prasādam) - calmness; कुरु (kuru) - make; न (na) - not; अर्हसि (ar'hasi) - you ought; मण्डूकानाम् (maṇḍūkānām) - of the frogs; अनपराधिनाम् (anaparādhinām) - of the innocent; वधं (vadham) - killing; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Do not, O king, go under the control of anger; make calmness; you ought not to do the killing of the innocent frogs thus.)
O king, do not act in anger; be calm. You should not kill the innocent frogs in this manner. (03-190-33)
श्लोकौ चात्र भवतः मा मण्डूकाञ्जिघांस त्वं कोपं सन्धारयाच्युत। प्रक्षीयते धनोद्रेको जनानामविजानताम् ॥०३-१९०-३४॥
ślokau cātra bhavataḥ mā maṇḍūkāñjighāṁsa tvaṁ kopaṁ sandhārayācyuta. prakṣīyate dhanodreko janānām avijānatām ॥03-190-34॥
[श्लोकौ (ślokau) - verses; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; मा (mā) - do not; मण्डूकान् (maṇḍūkān) - frogs; जिघांस (jighāṁsa) - intend to hurt; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; कोपं (kopaṁ) - anger; सन्धारय (sandhāraya) - restrain; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; प्रक्षीयते (prakṣīyate) - is destroyed; धन-उद्रेकः (dhana-udrekaḥ) - the arrogance (increase) of wealth; जनानाम् (janānām) - of people; अविजानताम् (avijānatām) - of the ignorant;]
(Verses and here your, do not, frogs, intend to kill, you, anger, restrain, O Acyuta. Is destroyed, the arrogance of wealth, of the people, of the ignorant.)
Here are your verses. Do not intend to harm the frogs; restrain your anger, O Acyuta. The arrogance of wealth is destroyed in those ignorant people. (03-190-34)
प्रतिजानीहि नैतांस्त्वं प्राप्य क्रोधं विमोक्ष्यसे। अलं कृत्वा तवाधर्मं मण्डूकैः किं हतैर्हि ते ॥०३-१९०-३५॥
pratijānīhi naitāṁstvaṁ prāpya krodhaṁ vimokṣyase। alaṁ kṛtvā tavādharmāṁ maṇḍūkaiḥ kiṁ hatairhi te ॥03-190-35॥
[प्रतिजानीहि (pratijānīhi) - promise; declare; न (na) - not; एतांश् (etāṁs) - these; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - will release; will let go; अलम् (alam) - enough; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तव (tava) - your; अधर्मं (adharmam) - unrighteous act; मण्डूकैः (maṇḍūkaiḥ) - with frogs; किम् (kim) - what? हतैः (hatair) - with killed; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - to you;]
(Promise! You, having obtained this anger, will not release it. Enough, having done your unrighteousness. Indeed, what to you with the killed frogs?)
Promise that having given way to this anger, you will not let it go. You have committed your unrighteous act — but what benefit is there to you in killing these frogs? (03-190-35)
तमेवंवादिनमिष्टजनशोकपरीतात्मा राजा प्रोवाच न हि क्षम्यते तन्मया हनिष्याम्येतान् एतैर्दुरात्मभिः प्रिया मे भक्षिता सर्वथैव मे वध्या मण्डूकाः नार्हसि विद्वन्मामुपरोद्धुमिति ॥०३-१९०-३६॥
tamevaṃvādinamiṣṭajanaśokaparītātmā rājā provāca na hi kṣamyate tanmayā haniṣyāmyetān etairdurātmabhiḥ priyā me bhakṣitā sarvathaiva me vadhyā maṇḍūkāḥ nārhasi vidvanmāmuparoddhumiti ॥03-190-36॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवं-वादिनम् (evaṃ-vādinam) - thus-speaking; इष्टजनशोकपरीतात्मा (iṣṭajana-śoka-parīta-ātmā) - his heart afflicted by grief for beloved ones; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; न हि क्षम्यते तत् मया (na hi kṣamyate tat mayā) - that is indeed not to be forgiven by me; हनिष्यामि एतान् (haniṣyāmi etān) - I shall kill these; एतैः दुरात्मभिः (etaiḥ durātmabhiḥ) - by these evil-minded ones; प्रिया मे भक्षिता (priyā me bhakṣitā) - my beloved has been eaten; सर्वथा एव मे वध्या मण्डूकाः (sarvathā eva me vadhyā maṇḍūkāḥ) - certainly the frogs are to be killed by me; नार्हसि विद्वन् माम् उपरोद्धुम् इति (nārhasi vidvan mām uparoddhum iti) - O wise one, you ought not to restrain me thus;]
(Him thus-speaking, his heart afflicted by grief for beloved ones, the king said: that is indeed not to be forgiven by me; I shall kill these; by these evil-minded ones my beloved has been eaten; certainly the frogs are to be killed by me; O wise one, you ought not to restrain me thus.)
To him who spoke thus, the king, whose heart was afflicted with grief for his loved ones, said: 'This is indeed not to be forgiven by me; I shall kill these, for my beloved has been eaten by these evil-minded ones. Certainly, the frogs are to be killed by me, and you, O wise one, ought not to restrain me thus.' (03-190-36)
स तद्वाक्यमुपलभ्य व्यथितेन्द्रियमनाः प्रोवाच प्रसीद राजन् अहमायुर्नाम मण्डूकराजः मम सा दुहिता सुशोभना नाम तस्या दौःशील्यमेतत् बहवो हि राजानस्तया विप्रलब्धपूर्वा इति ॥०३-१९०-३७॥
sa tadvākyam-upalabhya vyathitendriya-manāḥ provāca prasīda rājan aham āyur-nāma maṇḍūka-rājaḥ mama sā duhitā suśobhanā nāma tasyā dauḥśīlyam etat bahavo hi rājānas tayā vipralabdha-pūrvā iti ॥03-190-37॥
[स (sa) - he; तद्वाक्यम् (tad-vākyam) - that speech; उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having heard; व्यथितेन्द्रियमनाः (vyathita-indriya-manāḥ) - with mind and senses afflicted; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अहम् (aham) - I; आयुर्नाम (āyur-nāma) - named Āyuḥ; मण्डूकराजः (maṇḍūka-rājaḥ) - the king of frogs; मम (mama) - my; सा (sā) - that; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; सुशोभना (suśobhanā) - Suśobhanā; नाम (nāma) - by name; तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her; दौःशील्यम् (dauḥśīlyam) - bad character; एतत् (etat) - this; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; हि (hi) - indeed; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; तया (tayā) - by her; विप्रलब्धपूर्वा (vipralabdha-pūrvāḥ) - previously deceived; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He, having heard that speech, with mind and senses afflicted, said: "Be gracious, O king. I, named Āyuḥ, the king of frogs. That is my daughter, named Suśobhanā. This is her bad character. Indeed, many kings have previously been deceived by her." (03-190-37))
Hearing those words, he, distressed in mind and senses, said: "Be gracious, O king! I am Āyuḥ, king of the frogs. That is my daughter, Suśobhanā by name. This is her wrongdoing—indeed, many kings have previously been deceived by her." (03-190-37)
तमब्रवीद्राजा तयास्म्यर्थी सा मे दीयतामिति ॥०३-१९०-३८॥
tam abravīd rājā tayā asmi arthī sā me dīyatām iti ॥03-190-38॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजा (rājā) - the king; तया (tayā) - by her; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अर्थी (arthī) - a suitor; सा (sā) - she; मे (me) - to me; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let her be given; इति (iti) - thus;]
(To him the king said, "By her I am a suitor; she to me let her be given," thus.)
The king said to him: "I am a suitor for her; let her be given to me." (03-190-38)
अथैनां राज्ञे पितादात् अब्रवीच्चैनाम् एनं राजानं शुश्रूषस्वेति ॥०३-१९०-३९॥
athaināṃ rājñe pitādāt abravīc cainām enaṃ rājānaṃ śuśrūṣasveti ॥03-190-39॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनाम् (enām) - her; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; पिता (pitā) - father; अदात् (adāt) - gave; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - to her; एनं (enaṃ) - this; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; शुश्रूषस्व (śuśrūṣasva) - serve; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then her father gave her to the king, and said to her: "Serve this king" thus.)
Then her father gave her to the king and said to her, "Serve this king." (03-190-39)
स उवाच दुहितरम् यस्मात्त्वया राजानो विप्रलब्धास्तस्मादब्रह्मण्यानि तवापत्यानि भविष्यन्त्यनृतकत्वात्तवेति ॥०३-१९०-४०॥
sa uvāca duhitaraṁ yasmāttvayā rājāno vipralabdhās tasmād abrahmaṇyāni tavāpatyāni bhaviṣyantyanṛtakattvāt taveti ॥03-190-40॥
[स (sa) - he; उवाच (uvāca) - said; दुहितरम् (duhitaraṁ) - to (his) daughter; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; विप्रलब्धाः (vipralabdhāḥ) - deceived; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अब्रह्मण्यानि (abrahmaṇyāni) - not-devoted-to-Brahman; not-virtuous; तव (tava) - your; अपत्यानि (apatyāni) - offspring; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - shall be; will become; अनृतकत्वात् (anṛtakattvāt) - because of falsehood; due to being a liar; तवेति (taveti) - of yours thus;]
(He said to the daughter, because by you kings were deceived, therefore your offspring shall not be devoted to Brahman, due to being untruthful on your part thus.)
He said to his daughter: "Because you deceived the kings, therefore your offspring shall be unworthy of the Brahmanical path, due to your untruthfulness." (03-190-40)
स च राजा तामुपलभ्य तस्यां सुरतगुणनिबद्धहृदयो लोकत्रयैश्वर्यमिवोपलभ्य हर्षबाष्पकलया वाचा प्रणिपत्याभिपूज्य मण्डूकराजानमब्रवीत् अनुगृहीतोऽस्मीति ॥०३-१९०-४१॥
sa ca rājā tām upalabhya tasyāṃ surata-guṇa-nibaddha-hṛdayaḥ loka-traya-aiśvaryam iva upalabhya harṣa-bāṣpa-kalayā vācā praṇipatya abhipūjya maṇḍūka-rājānam abravīt anugṛhīto'smīti ॥03-190-41॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - the king; ताम् (tām) - her; उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having obtained; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; सुरतगुणनिबद्धहृदयः (surata-guṇa-nibaddha-hṛdayaḥ) - one whose heart was bound by the quality of union; लोकत्रयैश्वर्यम् (loka-traya-aiśvaryam) - the sovereignty of the three worlds; इव (iva) - like; उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having obtained; हर्षबाष्पकलया (harṣa-bāṣpa-kalayā) - with a streak of tears of joy; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed down; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having honored; मण्डूकराजानम् (maṇḍūka-rājānam) - the king of frogs; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; अनुगृहीतः (anugṛhītaḥ) - favored; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He and the king, having obtained her, his heart bound by the quality of union with her, having obtained (her) like the sovereignty of the three worlds, with a streak of tears of joy, with speech, having bowed down, having honored the king of frogs, he said, "I am favored.")
And the king, having won her and with his heart bound by the quality of their union, feeling as though he had obtained the sovereignty of the three worlds, spoke with a streak of joyful tears, having bowed and honored the king of frogs: "I am favored." (03-190-41)
स च मण्डूकराजो जामातरमनुज्ञाप्य यथागतमगच्छत् ॥०३-१९०-४२॥
sa ca maṇḍūkarājo jāmatāram anujñāpya yathāgatam agacchat ॥03-190-42॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; मण्डूकराजः (maṇḍūkarājaḥ) - the king of frogs; जामातरम् (jāmatāram) - (his) son-in-law; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having permitted; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as he had come; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - he went;]
(He and the king of frogs, having permitted (his) son-in-law, went as he had come.)
And the king of frogs, having allowed his son-in-law, departed as he had come. (03-190-42)
अथ कस्यचित्कालस्य तस्यां कुमारास्त्रयस्तस्य राज्ञः सम्बभूवुः शलो दलो बलश्चेति ततस्तेषां ज्येष्ठं शलं समये पिता राज्येऽभिषिच्य तपसि धृतात्मा वनं जगाम ॥०३-१९०-४३॥
atha kasyacit kālasya tasyāṃ kumārās trayas tasya rājñaḥ sambabhūvuḥ śalo dalo balaś ceti tataḥ teṣāṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ śalaṃ samaye pitā rājye'bhiṣicya tapasi dhṛtātmā vanaṃ jagāma ॥03-190-43॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कस्यचित्कालस्य (kasyacit kālasya) - of a certain time; तस्यां (tasyām) - in her; कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - sons; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; सम्भभूवुः (sambabhūvuḥ) - were born; शलो (śalaḥ) - Śala; दलः (dalaḥ) - Dala; बलः (balaḥ) - Bala; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; शलम् (śalam) - Śala; समये (samaye) - at the proper time; पिता (pitā) - the father; राज्येऽभिषिच्य (rājye' bhiṣicya) - having installed in the kingdom; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; धृतात्मा (dhṛtātmā) - steadfast in mind; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; जगाम (jagāma) - he went;]
(Then, at a certain time, in her, three sons of that king were born, Śala, Dala, and Bala—thus. Then, of them, the eldest, Śala, at the proper time, the father, having installed in the kingdom, steadfast in mind, went to the forest for austerity.)
Then, after some time, three sons were born to that king by her: Śala, Dala, and Bala. Thereafter, when the time came, the father, steadfast in mind, installed the eldest, Śala, in the kingdom and went to the forest for austerities. (3-190-43)
अथ कदाचिच्छलो मृगयामचरत् मृगं चासाद्य रथेनान्वधावत् ॥०३-१९०-४४॥
atha kadācit śalo mṛgayām acarata mṛgaṃ ca āsādya rathena anvadhāvat ॥03-190-44॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; शलः (śalaḥ) - Śala (name); मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - in the hunt; अचरत् (acarata) - he roamed; मृगम् (mṛgam) - deer; च (ca) - and; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; रथेन (rathena) - with the chariot; अन्वधावत् (anvadhāvat) - he pursued;]
(Then at some time Śala roamed in the hunt; having approached a deer, and with the chariot, he pursued (it).)
Then, once, Śala went hunting; having come upon a deer, he pursued it with his chariot. (03-190-44)
सूतं चोवाच शीघ्रं मां वहस्वेति ॥०३-१९०-४५॥
sūtaṃ covāca śīghraṃ māṃ vahasveti ॥03-190-45॥
[सूतम् (sūtam) - charioteer; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - said; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; माम् (mām) - me; वह (vaha) - carry; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He said to the charioteer, "Quickly carry me thus.")
He said to the charioteer, "Quickly, carry me." (03-190-45)
स तथोक्तः सूतो राजानमब्रवीत् मा क्रियतामनुबन्धः नैष शक्यस्त्वया मृगो ग्रहीतुं यद्यपि ते रथे युक्तौ वाम्यौ स्यातामिति ॥०३-१९०-४६॥
sa tathoktaḥ sūto rājānam abravīt mā kriyatām anubandhaḥ naiṣa śakyas tvayā mṛgo grahītuṁ yady api te rathe yuktau vāmyau syātām iti ॥03-190-46॥

(He, thus addressed, the charioteer to the king said: "Do not let the pursuit be made; this (deer) is not possible to be captured by you, even though to you on the chariot two fleet ones may be yoked," thus.)
Thus addressed, the charioteer said to the king: "Do not undertake the pursuit; this deer cannot be captured by you, even if you have two swift horses yoked to your chariot." (03-190-46)
ततोऽब्रवीद्राजा सूतम् आचक्ष्व मे वाम्यौ हन्मि वा त्वामिति ॥०३-१९०-४७॥

Then the king said to the charioteer, "Tell me, or by either way, I will kill you." (03-190-47)
स एवमुक्तो राजभयभीतो वामदेवशापभीतश्च सन्नाचख्यौ राज्ञे वामदेवस्याश्वौ वाम्यौ मनोजवाविति ॥०३-१९०-४८॥
sa evam-ukto rājabhaya-bhīto vāmadeva-śāpa-bhītaś ca san nācakhyau rājñe vāmadevasya aśvau vāmyau manojavāv iti ॥03-190-48॥

(He, thus addressed, afraid of the fear of the king and afraid of Vāmadeva's curse, being so, did not declare to the king Vāmadeva's two horses named Vāmya and Manojava thus.)
Thus addressed, being afraid both of the king and Vāmadeva's curse, he did not tell the king about Vāmadeva's two horses named Vāmya and Manojava. (03-190-48)
अथैनमेवं ब्रुवाणमब्रवीद्राजा वामदेवाश्रमं याहीति ॥०३-१९०-४९॥

Then, as he was thus speaking, the king said, "Go to Vāmadeva's hermitage." (03-190-49)
स गत्वा वामदेवाश्रमं तमृषिमब्रवीत् भगवन्मृगो मया विद्धः पलायते तं सम्भावयेयम् अर्हसि मे वाम्यौ दातुमिति ॥०३-१९०-५०॥

(He, having gone to Vāmadeva's hermitage, said to that sage: "O venerable, the deer struck by me is fleeing. I might obtain him. You ought to give me (your) two (consent)." Thus.)
Having gone to Vāmadeva's hermitage, he said to the sage: "O venerable one, the deer I struck is fleeing. May I secure him; you ought to consent to me with your two (eyes/lips)." (03-190-50)
तमब्रवीदृषिः ददानि ते वाम्यौ कृतकार्येण भवता ममैव निर्यात्यौ क्षिप्रमिति ॥०३-१९०-५१॥
tam abravīd ṛṣiḥ dadāni te vāmyau kṛtakāryeṇa bhavatā mamaiva niryātyau kṣipram iti ॥03-190-51॥

(To him the sage spoke: I shall give to you the two women; when the deed has been accomplished by you, indeed mine, they shall be sent forth quickly thus.)
The sage said to him: "I will give you the two women; when you have accomplished my task, they shall be promptly released by me." (03-190-51)
स च तावश्वौ प्रतिगृह्यानुज्ञाप्य चर्षिं प्रायाद्वाम्यसंयुक्तेन रथेन मृगं प्रति गच्छंश्चाब्रवीत्सूतम् अश्वरत्नाविमावयोग्यौ ब्राह्मणानाम् नैतौ प्रतिदेयौ वामदेवायेति ॥०३-१९०-५२॥
sa ca tau aśvau pratigṛhya anujñāpya ca ṛṣim prāyāt vāmyasaṁyuktena rathena mṛgaṁ prati gacchan ca abravīt sūtam aśvaratnau imau ayogyau brāhmaṇānām na etau pratideyau vāmadevāya iti ॥03-190-52॥

(He, and those two horses having accepted and having taken leave of the sage, departed by a chariot drawn to the left, going towards the deer, and said to the charioteer: "These two horse-jewels, these two are not fit to be given to brāhmaṇas, not to be given to Vāmadeva thus." (03-190-52))
He accepted those two horses, and having taken leave of the sage, departed in a left-turning chariot towards the deer. As he went, he said to the charioteer: "These two horses are not suitable to be given to brāhmaṇas, and they should not be given to Vāmadeva." (03-190-52)
एवमुक्त्वा मृगमवाप्य स्वनगरमेत्याश्वावन्तःपुरेऽस्थापयत् ॥०३-१९०-५३॥
evam-uktvā mṛgam avāpya sva-nagaram etya aśvān antaḥpure asthāpayat ॥03-190-53॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; मृगम् (mṛgam) - the deer; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; स्वनगरम् (sva-nagaram) - his own city; एत्य (etya) - having arrived; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; अन्तःपुरे (antaḥpure) - inside the inner apartments; अस्थापयत् (asthāpayat) - he stationed;]
(Thus having spoken, having obtained the deer, having arrived at his own city, he stationed the horses in the inner apartments.)
After saying this and obtaining the deer, he returned to his city and placed the horses in the inner quarters. (03-190-53)
अथर्षिश्चिन्तयामास तरुणो राजपुत्रः कल्याणं पत्रमासाद्य रमते न मे प्रतिनिर्यातयति अहो कष्टमिति ॥०३-१९०-५४॥
atharṣiś cintayāmāsa taruṇo rājaputraḥ kalyāṇaṃ patram āsādya ramate na me pratiniryātayati aho kaṣṭam iti ॥03-190-54॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; तरुणः (taruṇaḥ) - young; राजपुत्रः (rājaputraḥ) - prince; कल्याणं (kalyāṇam) - good; पत्रम् (patram) - letter; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; रमते (ramate) - rejoices; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; प्रतिनिर्यातयति (pratiniryātayati) - returns (it) to me; अहो (aho) - alas; कष्टम् (kaṣṭam) - difficulty; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then the sage thought: the young prince, having obtained the good letter, rejoices, does not return it to me. Alas, difficulty! — thus.)
Then the sage thought, "The young prince, having received the good letter, rejoices and does not give it back to me. Alas, what trouble!" (03-190-54)
मनसा निश्चित्य मासि पूर्णे शिष्यमब्रवीत् गच्छात्रेय राजानं ब्रूहि यदि पर्याप्तं निर्यातयोपाध्यायवाम्याविति ॥०३-१९०-५५॥
manasā niścitya māsi pūrṇe śiṣyam abravīt gacchātreya rājānaṃ brūhi yadi paryāptaṃ niryātayopādhyāyavāmyāv iti ॥03-190-55॥
[मनसा (manasā) - by mind; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having determined; मासि (māsi) - in the month; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - when full; शिष्यम् (śiṣyam) - the student; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; आत्रेय (ātreya) - Ātreya; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; यदि (yadi) - if; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; निर्यातय (niryātaya) - send forth; उपाध्याय (upādhyāya) - teacher; वाम्यौ (vāmyau) - both of us; इति (iti) - thus;]
(By mind having determined, when the month was full, (he) said to (his) student: Go, Ātreya, tell the king: If sufficient, send forth both of us teachers—thus.)
Having mentally determined, when the month was complete, he said to his student: "Go, Ātreya, tell the king: If it is sufficient, send both us teachers." (03-190-55)
स गत्वैवं तं राजानमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१९०-५६॥
sa gatvaivaṃ taṃ rājānam abravīt ॥03-190-56॥

तं राजा प्रत्युवाच राज्ञामेतद्वाहनम् अनर्हा ब्राह्मणा रत्नानामेवंविधानाम् किं च ब्राह्मणानामश्वैः कार्यम् साधु प्रतिगम्यतामिति ॥०३-१९०-५७॥

(Him the king answered: by a king this conveyance is not suitable for Brāhmaṇas; of jewels of such kind, what also for Brāhmaṇas is the purpose with horses? Well, let (him) return thus.)
The king answered him: "Such a conveyance is not suitable for Brāhmaṇas; what use have Brāhmaṇas for jewels of this type or for horses? Well then, let him return." (03-190-57)
स गत्वैवमुपाध्यायायाचष्ट ॥०३-१९०-५८॥
sa gatvaivam-upādhyāyāy ācaṣṭa ॥03-190-58॥

He went to the teacher and thus spoke. (03-190-58)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनमप्रियं वामदेवः क्रोधपरीतात्मा स्वयमेव राजानमभिगम्याश्वार्थमभ्यचोदयत् न चादाद्राजा ॥०३-१९०-५९॥
tac chrutvā vacanam apriyaṃ vāmadevaḥ krodhaparītātmā svayam eva rājānam abhigamya aśvārtham abhyacodayat na ca ādāt rājā ॥03-190-59॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अप्रियं (apriyam) - unpleasant; वामदेवः (vāmadevaḥ) - Vāmadeva; क्रोधपरीतात्मा (krodhaparītātmā) - anger-overcome in mind; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; एव (eva) - indeed; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; अश्वार्थम् (aśvārtham) - for a horse; अभ्यचोदयत् (abhyacodayat) - urged; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अदात् (adāt) - gave; राजा (rājā) - the king;]
(That having heard the unpleasant speech Vāmadeva, anger-overcome in mind, himself indeed having approached the king urged for a horse, and the king did not give.)
Hearing that unpleasant speech, Vāmadeva, filled with anger, himself approached the king and urged him for a horse, but the king did not give it. (03-190-59)

प्रयच्छ वाम्यौ मम पार्थिव त्वं; कृतं हि ते कार्यमन्यैरशक्यम्। मा त्वा वधीद्वरुणो घोरपाशै; र्ब्रह्मक्षत्रस्यान्तरे वर्तमानः ॥०३-१९०-६०॥
prayaccha vāmyau mama pārthiva tvaṁ; kṛtaṁ hi te kāryam anyair aśakyam। mā tvā vadhīd varuṇo ghorapāśaiḥ; brahmakṣatrasyāntare vartamānaḥ॥03-190-60॥

O king, grant both of them to me; your task, impossible for others, has indeed been accomplished. Do not let Varuṇa kill you with his terrible bonds, while you dwell between Brāhmaṇa and Kṣatriya. (03-190-60)

anaḍvāhau suvratau sādhu dāntā; veta-dviprāṇāṃ vāhanaṃ vāmadeva. tābhyāṃ yāhi tvaṃ yatra kāmo maharṣe; chandāṃsi vai tvādṛśaṃ saṃvahanti ॥03-190-61॥

(Two bullock-carts of good vow, good, tamed, indeed—vehicle of those Brāhmaṇas, O Vāmadeva. By those two, go you where (your) desire (leads), O great sage; the Vedic meters indeed carry like you.)
O Vāmadeva, these two bullock-carts, of good conduct and tamed, are the vehicles of the Brāhmaṇas. With these two, go wherever you desire, O great sage; indeed, the Vedic meters bear (those) like yourself. (03-190-61)

छन्दांसि वै मादृशं संवहन्ति; लोकेऽमुष्मिन्पार्थिव यानि सन्ति। अस्मिंस्तु लोके मम यानमेत; दस्मद्विधानामपरेषां च राजन् ॥०३-१९०-६२॥
chandāṃsi vai mādṛśaṃ saṃvahanti; loke'muṣmin pārthiva yāni santi. asmin tu loke mama yānam etad asmad-vidhānām apareṣāṃ ca rājan ॥03-190-62॥
[छन्दांसि (chandāṃsi) (chandāṃsi) - the Vedic metres; वै (vai) (vai) - indeed; मादृशं (mādṛśam) (mādṛśam) - for one like me; संवहन्ति (saṃvahanti) (saṃvahanti) - bear; carry; लोके (loke) (loke) - in the world; ऽमुष्मिन् ('muṣmin) ('muṣmin) - in that (other); पार्थिव (pārthiva) (pārthiva) - O king; यानि (yāni) (yāni) - which; सन्ति (santi) (santi) - are; exist; अस्मिन् (asmin) (asmin) - in this; तु (tu) (tu) - but; लोके (loke) (loke) - in the world; मम (mama) (mama) - my; यानम् (yānam) (yānam) - vehicle; conveyance; एत (etad) (etad) - this; अस्मद्विधानाम् (asmad-vidhānām) (asmad-vidhānām) - of those like me; अपरेषां (apareṣām) (apareṣām) - of others; च (ca) (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king;]
(The Vedic metres indeed bear one like me; in that world, O king, which exist. But in this world, my vehicle is this, of those like me and of others, O king.)
O king, it is said that the Vedic metres indeed support one such as myself—in that other world, whatever exist there. But in this world, this is the vehicle for myself, for others like me, and for others as well, O king. (03-190-62)

चत्वारो वा गर्दभास्त्वां वहन्तु; श्रेष्ठाश्वतर्यो हरयो वा तुरङ्गाः। तैस्त्वं याहि क्षत्रियस्यैष वाहो; मम वाम्यौ न तवैतौ हि विद्धि ॥०३-१९०-६३॥
catvāro vā gardabhās tvāṃ vahantu; śreṣṭhāśvataryo harayo vā turaṅgāḥ. tais tvaṃ yāhi kṣatriyasya eṣa vāhaḥ; mama vāmyau na tava etau hi viddhi ॥03-190-63॥

(Four asses may carry you, or excellent mules, or horses, or quick steeds. By those you go; of a kṣatriya this is the vehicle. My mules, not yours, these two indeed, know.)
Let four asses carry you, or excellent mules, or horses, or quick steeds. Go with those; this is the vehicle of a kṣatriya. Know that these two mules are mine, not yours. (03-190-63)

ghoraṃ vrataṃ brāhmaṇasyaitadāhu; retadraājanyadihājīvamānaḥ| ayasmayā ghorarūpā mahānto; vahantu tvāṃ śitaśūlāścaturdhā ॥03-190-64॥
[घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of a Brahmin; एतत् (etat) - this; आहु (āhu) - they say; रेतद् (retad) - semen; राजन्य (rājanya) - of a Kṣatriya; इह (iha) - here; अजीवमानः (ajīvamānaḥ) - living; अयस्मया (ayasmayā) - made of iron; घोररूपा (ghorarūpā) - terrible in form; महान्तः (mahāntaḥ) - great; वहन्तु (vahantu) - let them carry; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; शितशूलाः (śitaśūlāḥ) - sharp spears; चतुर्धा (caturdhā) - in four ways;]
(Terrible vow of a Brahmin this they say; semen, a Kṣatriya here living. By iron terrible in form great ones, let them carry you, sharp spears in four ways.)
They say this is a terrible vow of a Brahmin; semen, when a Kṣatriya lives here. Let the great and terrible ones made of iron, carrying sharp spears in four directions, bear you away. (03-190-64)
राजोवाच॥

The king said.
ये त्वा विदुर्ब्राह्मणं वामदेव; वाचा हन्तुं मनसा कर्मणा वा। ते त्वां सशिष्यमिह पातयन्तु; मद्वाक्यनुन्नाः शितशूलासिहस्ताः ॥०३-१९०-६५॥
ye tvā vidur brāhmaṇaṃ vāmadeva; vācā hantuṃ manasā karmaṇā vā. te tvāṃ saśiṣyam iha pātayantu; mad-vākyanunnāḥ śitaśūlāsihastāḥ ॥03-190-65॥
[ये (ye) - those who; त्वा (tvā) - you; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - Brahmin; वामदेव (vāmadeva) - O Vāmadeva; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; वा (vā) - or; ते (te) - those; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; सशिष्यम् (saśiṣyam) - with disciple; इह (iha) - here; पातयन्तु (pātayantu) - may cause to fall; मद्वाक्यनुन्नाः (mad-vākya-nunnāḥ) - urged by my words; शितशूलासिहस्ताः (śita-śūla-asi-hastāḥ) - those whose hands have sharp spears and swords;]
(Those who know you as a Brahmin, O Vāmadeva, to kill by speech, or by mind, or by action—may those, together with disciples, here make you fall, impelled by my words, with sharp-spears-and-swords-in-hand.)
Those who know you as a Brahmin, O Vāmadeva, and who seek to slay you by words, mind, or action—may they, together with their disciples, here bring about your downfall, being driven by my words, bearing sharp spears and swords in their hands. (03-190-65)

nānuyogā brāhmaṇānāṃ bhavanti; vācā rājanmanasā karmaṇā vā. yastvevaṃ brahma tapasānveti vidvāṃ; stena śreṣṭho bhavati hi jīvamānaḥ ॥03-190-66॥
[नानुयोगाः (nānuyogāḥ) - various occupations; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of brāhmaṇas; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; वा (vā) - or; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रह्म (brahma) - brahman; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अन्वेति (anveti) - attains; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; स्तेनः (stenaḥ) - a thief; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - superior; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवमानः (jīvamānaḥ) - while living;]
(Various occupations of brāhmaṇas are; by speech, O king, by mind, or by action. But who thus attains brahman by austerity, wise, a thief superior indeed becomes while living.)
There are indeed various occupations for brāhmaṇas—by speech, O king, by mind, or by action; but the wise one who thus attains brahman through austerity, even while living, becomes superior to a thief. (03-190-66)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

एवमुक्ते वामदेवेन राज; न्समुत्तस्थू राक्षसा घोररूपाः। तैः शूलहस्तैर्वध्यमानः स राजा; प्रोवाचेदं वाक्यमुच्चैस्तदानीम् ॥०३-१९०-६७॥
evam-ukte vāmadevena rāja;nsamuttasthū rākṣasā ghorarūpāḥ. taiḥ śūlahastairvadhyamānaḥ sa rājā; provācedaṃ vākyamuccaistadānīm ॥03-190-67॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; वामदेवेन (vāmadevena) - by Vāmadeva; राजन् (rājan) - O King; समुत्तस्थुः (samuttasthūḥ) - arose; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - the Rākṣasas (demons); घोररूपाः (ghorarūpāḥ) - terrible in form; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; शूलहस्तैः (śūlahastaiḥ) - holding spears in their hands; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being beaten/struck; सः (saḥ) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रोवाच (provāca) - uttered; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; तदानीम् (tadānīm) - at that time;]
(Thus, when it was said by Vāmadeva, O King, the demons of terrible form arose. By them, wielding spears in their hands, being struck, that king spoke this speech loudly at that time.)
When these words were spoken by Vāmadeva, O King, the terrible-looking demons arose. As the king was being attacked by those spear-wielding beings, he loudly uttered this speech at that moment. (03-190-67)
इक्ष्वाकवो यदि ब्रह्मन्दलो वा; विधेया मे यदि वान्ये विशोऽपि। नोत्स्रक्ष्येऽहं वामदेवस्य वाम्यौ; नैवंविधा धर्मशीला भवन्ति ॥०३-१९०-६८॥
ikṣvākavo yadi brahman-dalo vā; vidheyā me yadi vāanye viśo'pi. notsrakṣye'haṃ vāmadevasya vāmyau; naivaṃvidhā dharmaśīlā bhavanti ॥03-190-68॥
[इक्ष्वाकवः (ikṣvākavaḥ) - the Ikṣvāku dynasty; यदि (yadi) - if; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; दलः (dalaḥ) - group; वा (vā) - or; विधेया (vidheyā) - subject to (obedient to); मे (me) - to me; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अन्ये (anye) - others; विशः (viśaḥ) - tribes; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; उत्स्रक्ष्ये (utsrakṣye) - I shall abandon; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वामदेवस्य (vāmadevasya) - of Vāmadeva; वाम्यौ (vāmyau) - his wives (dual); न (na) - not; एवंविधाः (evaṃvidhāḥ) - such as this; धर्मशीला (dharmaśīlā) - righteous by nature; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become;]
(If the Ikṣvākus or the group of Brāhmaṇas or even other tribes are to be obedient to me, I shall not abandon the two wives of Vāmadeva; such righteous ones do not behave thus.)
Even if the Ikṣvāku dynasty, the group of Brāhmaṇas, or any other tribes should be obedient to me, I will not abandon the two wives of Vāmadeva; people of such righteous character do not act in this way. (3-190-68)
एवं ब्रुवन्नेव स यातुधानै; र्हतो जगामाशु महीं क्षितीशः। ततो विदित्वा नृपतिं निपातित; मिक्ष्वाकवो वै दलमभ्यषिञ्चन् ॥०३-१९०-६९॥
evaṁ bruvanneva sa yātudhānaiḥ; hataḥ jagāmāśu mahīṁ kṣitīśaḥ। tato viditvā nṛpatiṁ nipātitam ikṣvākavaḥ vai dalam abhyaṣiñcan ॥03-190-69॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; यातुधानैः (yātudhānaiḥ) - by the demons; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; जगाम (jagāma) - went; आशु (āśu) - quickly; महीम् (mahīm) - to the earth; क्षितीशः (kṣitīśaḥ) - the king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - the king; निपातितम् (nipātitam) - fallen; इक्ष्वाकवः (ikṣvākavaḥ) - the Ikṣvāku-s (descendants of Ikṣvāku); वै (vai) - indeed; दलम् (dalam) - the party; अभ्यषिञ्चन् (abhyaṣiñcan) - anointed;]
(Thus indeed, while speaking, he by the demons killed, went quickly to the earth, the king. Then, having known the king had fallen, the Ikṣvākus indeed anointed the party.)
While thus speaking, he was killed by the demons, and the king quickly passed to the earth. Then, knowing that the king had fallen, the Ikṣvākus indeed anointed the group. (03-190-69)
राज्ये तदा तत्र गत्वा स विप्रः; प्रोवाचेदं वचनं वामदेवः। दलं राजानं ब्राह्मणानां हि देय; मेवं राजन्सर्वधर्मेषु दृष्टम् ॥०३-१९०-७०॥
rājye tadā tatra gatvā sa vipraḥ; provācedaṁ vacanaṁ vāmadevaḥ। dalaṁ rājānaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ hi deya; mevaṁ rājansarvadharmeṣu dṛṣṭam ॥03-190-70॥
[राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; तदा (tadā) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; स (sa) - he; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - speech; वामदेवः (vāmadevaḥ) - Vāmadeva; दलं (dalaṁ) - share; राजानं (rājānaṁ) - of the king; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṁ) - of the brāhmaṇas; हि (hi) - indeed; देय (deya) - should be given; मेवं (mevaṁ) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वधर्मेषु (sarvadharmeṣu) - in all dharmas; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - is seen;]
(In the kingdom then there having gone he brāhmaṇa said this speech Vāmadeva. Share of the king of the brāhmaṇas indeed should be given; thus O king in all dharmas is seen. (03-190-70))
Then, having gone there in the kingdom, that brāhmaṇa, Vāmadeva, said this speech: "A share for the king and for the brāhmaṇas indeed should be given; thus, O king, this is seen in all dharmic practices." (03-190-70)
बिभेषि चेत्त्वमधर्मान्नरेन्द्र; प्रयच्छ मे शीघ्रमेवाद्य वाम्यौ। एतच्छ्रुत्वा वामदेवस्य वाक्यं; स पार्थिवः सूतमुवाच रोषात् ॥०३-१९०-७१॥
bibheṣi cet tvam adharmān narendra; prayaccha me śīghram eva adya vāmyau. etat śrutvā vāmadevasya vākyam; sa pārthivaḥ sūtam uvāca roṣāt ॥03-190-71॥
[बिभेषि (bibheṣi) - you fear; चेत् (cet) - if; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अधर्मात् (adharmāt) - from unrighteousness; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; मे (me) - to me; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; आद्य (adya) - today; वाम्यौ (vāmyau) - the two (objects or persons, dual); एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वामदेवस्य (vāmadevasya) - of Vāmadeva; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; स (sa) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; सूतम् (sūtam) - to the charioteer; उवाच (uvāca) - said; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger;]
(If you fear unrighteousness, O king, then give me quickly, indeed today, the two. Having heard this speech of Vāmadeva, he, the king, said to the charioteer from anger.)
"If you fear unrighteous conduct, O king, then grant me the two right away, today." Hearing this statement of Vāmadeva, the king angrily spoke to the charioteer. (03-190-71)
एकं हि मे सायकं चित्ररूपं; दिग्धं विषेणाहर सङ्गृहीतम्। येन विद्धो वामदेवः शयीत; संदश्यमानः श्वभिरार्तरूपः ॥०३-१९०-७२॥
ekaṃ hi me sāyakaṃ citrarūpaṃ; digdhaṃ viṣeṇāhara saṅgṛhītam। yena viddho vāmadevaḥ śayīta; sandaśyamānaḥ śvabhir ārtarūpaḥ ॥03-190-72॥
[एकम् (ekam) - one; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; सायकम् (sāyakam) - arrow; चित्ररूपम् (citrarūpam) - having varied appearance; दिग्धम् (digdham) - smeared; विषेण (viṣeṇa) - with poison; अहर (ahara) - today; सङ्गृहीतम् (saṅgṛhītam) - taken; येन (yena) - by which; विद्धः (viddhaḥ) - pierced; वामदेवः (vāmadevaḥ) - Vāmadeva; शयीत (śayīta) - would lie; संदश्यमानः (sandaśyamānaḥ) - being bitten; श्वभिः (śvabhiḥ) - by dogs; आर्तरूपः (ārtarūpaḥ) - with form of distress;]
(One indeed my arrow with varied appearance, smeared with poison today, taken; by which pierced Vāmadeva would lie, being bitten by dogs, with form of distress.)
Indeed, I have this one arrow of mine, having a varied appearance, smeared with poison, taken today; by which, if pierced, Vāmadeva would lie in distress, being bitten by dogs. (3-190-72)

jānāmi putraṃ daśavarṣaṃ tavāhaṃ; jātaṃ mahiṣyāṃ śyenajitaṃ narendra. taṃ jahi tvaṃ mad-vacanāt praṇunna; stūrṇaṃ priyaṃ sāyakair ghorarūpaiḥ ॥03-190-73॥

(I know the son, ten-year-old, your, I; born in the chief queen, Śyenajita, O king. Him kill, you, at my word, urged; swiftly, dear, with arrows having a terrible form.)
O king, I know your ten-year-old son Śyenajita, born of your chief queen. Urged by my words, you kill that dear one swiftly with arrows of fearful form. (3-190-73)

evamukto vāmadevena rājann antaḥpure rājaputraṃ jaghāna. sa sāyakastigmatejā visṛṣṭaḥ; śrutvā dalas tacca vākyaṃ babhāṣe ॥03-190-74॥

(Thus spoken by Vāmadeva, O King, in the inner apartments the prince he struck. He, the arrow of sharp energy, released, hearing the troop, that and the statement, he spoke.)
Thus, addressed by Vāmadeva, O King, within the inner chambers, he struck the prince. The arrow of fierce energy, when released, and hearing the words of the troop, he spoke (thus). (03-190-74)
इक्ष्वाकवो हन्त चरामि वः प्रियं; निहन्मीमं विप्रमद्य प्रमथ्य। आनीयतामपरस्तिग्मतेजाः; पश्यध्वं मे वीर्यमद्य क्षितीशाः ॥०३-१९०-७५॥

(Descendants of Ikṣvāku, indeed, I do for you what is dear; I slay this Brāhmaṇa today, having overpowered (him). Let another fierce-bright (Brāhmaṇa) be brought; see my heroic power today, O kings.)
O descendants of Ikṣvāku, indeed I will do what is dear to you; I will kill this Brāhmaṇa today, having subdued him. Let another powerful one be brought—see my strength today, O kings. (03-190-75)

(Which terrible-form arrow, smeared with poison, you are fitting this for me; you will not be able to release this excellent arrow, or to fit it, O king of men.)
The terrible, poison-smeared arrow which you are placing for me—O king of men, you will not be able to either shoot or even fit this excellent arrow (to the bow). (03-190-76)

(O Ikṣvākus, see me having been seized; indeed I am not able to release this arrow. And I am not capable of causing his destruction; indeed, may the long-lived Vāmadeva live.)
O Ikṣvākus, look at me, I have been seized; indeed, I am unable to release this arrow. Nor am I able to destroy him. Truly, may the long-lived Vāmadeva live. (03-190-77)

(Touch this she-buffalo with an arrow; then from that sin you will be freed, you. Markandeya said.)

(Then thus did the king; but then the princess spoke to the sage. As is proper, O Vāmadeva, I reported to him, entering day by day.)
Then, the king did as prescribed; afterwards, the princess spoke to the sage. She said, “O Vāmadeva, as is proper, I used to report everything to him each day as I entered.” (03-190-79)
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो मृगयन्ती सूनृतानि; तथा ब्रह्मन्पुण्यलोकं लभेयम् ॥०३-१९०-७९॥
brāhmaṇebhyo mṛgayantī sūnṛtāni; tathā brahman puṇyalokaṃ labheyam ॥03-190-79॥

Seeking to please the Brāhmaṇas with pleasing words—thus, O Brahman, may I attain the world of merit. (03-190-79)

tvayā trātaṁ rājakulaṁ śubhekṣaṇe; varaṁ vṛṇīṣvāpratimaṁ dadāni te. praśādhīmaṁ svajanaṁ rājaputri; ikṣvākurājyaṁ sumahaccāpyanindye ॥03-190-80॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; त्रातं (trātam) - protected; राजकुलं (rājakulaṁ) - the royal family; शुभेक्षणे (śubhekṣaṇe) - O auspicious-eyed one; वरं (varaṁ) - a boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; अप्रतिमं (apratimaṁ) - unparalleled; ददानि (dadāni) - I will give; ते (te) - to you; प्रशाधि (praśādhi) - rule over; इमं (imaṁ) - this; स्वजनं (svajanaṁ) - own people; राजपुत्रि (rājaputri) - O princess; इक्ष्वाकुराज्यं (ikṣvākurājyaṁ) - the kingdom of Ikṣvāku; सुमहच्च (sumahac ca) - and exceedingly great; अप्यानिन्द्ये (api anindye) - also, O blameless one;]
(By you protected the royal family, O auspicious-eyed one; choose a boon unparalleled, I will give to you. Rule over this, your own people, O princess; the kingdom of Ikṣvāku, exceedingly great and also, O blameless one.)

राजपुत्र्युवाच॥

The princess said.
वरं वृणे भगवन्नेकमेव; विमुच्यतां किल्बिषादद्य भर्ता। शिवेन चाध्याहि सपुत्रबान्धवं; वरो वृतो ह्येष मया द्विजाग्र्य ॥०३-१९०-८१॥
varaṁ vṛṇe bhagavannekameva; vimucyatāṁ kilbiṣādadya bhartā. śivena cādhyāhi saputrabāndhavaṁ; varo vṛto hyeṣa mayā dvijāgrya ॥03-190-81॥
[वरं (varaṁ) - boon;' वृणे (vṛṇe) - I choose;' भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord;' एकम् (ekam) - one;' एव (eva) - only;' विमुच्यताम् (vimucyatām) - let be released;' किल्बिषात् (kilbiṣāt) - from sin;' अद्य (adya) - today;' भर्ता (bhartā) - husband;' शिवेन (śivena) - with auspiciousness;' च (ca) - and;' अध्याहि (adhyāhi) - protect;' सपुत्रबान्धवम् (saputrabāndhavam) - with son and relatives;' वरः (varaḥ) - boon;' वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen;' हि (hi) - indeed;' एषः (eṣaḥ) - this;' मया (mayā) - by me;' द्विजाग्र्य (dvijāgrya) - O best of Brāhmaṇas;]
(A boon I choose, O Lord, only one; let my husband be released from sin today. With auspiciousness also protect (him) with son and relatives; the boon indeed this (is) chosen by me, O best of Brāhmaṇas (03-190-81))
O Lord, I choose only one boon: let my husband be freed from sin today. With auspiciousness, may you also protect him along with his son and relatives. This is the boon I have chosen indeed, O best of Brāhmaṇas. (03-190-81)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

श्रुत्वा वचः स मुनी राजपुत्र्या; स्तथास्त्विति प्राह कुरुप्रवीर। ततः स राजा मुदितो बभूव; वाम्यौ चास्मै सम्प्रददौ प्रणम्य ॥०३-१९०-८२॥
śrutvā vacaḥ sa munī rājaputryā; stathāstviti prāha kurupravīra. tataḥ sa rājā mudito babhūva; vāmyau cāsmai sampradadau praṇamya ॥03-190-82॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; स (sa) - he; मुनी (munī) - sage; राजपुत्र्या (rājaputryā) - by the princess; स्तथास्तु (stathāstu) - so be it; इति (iti) - thus; प्राह (prāha) - said; कुरुप्रवीर (kurupravīra) - O hero of the Kuru clan; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - gladdened; बभूव (babhūva) - became; वाम्यौ (vāmyau) - the two maidens; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; सम्प्रददौ (sampradadau) - gave completely; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed;]
(Having heard the words, he, the sage, by the princess; "So be it," thus said, O hero of the Kuru clan. Then, he, the king, gladdened became; the two maidens and to him gave completely, having bowed.)
Hearing the princess's words, the sage said, "So be it," to the hero of the Kuru clan. Then the king, delighted, became happy and, after bowing, gave the two maidens to him. (03-190-82)
