मार्कण्डेयमृषयः पाण्डवाश्च पर्यपृच्छन् अस्ति कश्चिद्भवतश्चिरजाततर इति ॥०३-१९१-१॥
mārkaṇḍeyam ṛṣayaḥ pāṇḍavāś ca paryapṛcchan asti kaścid bhavataś cirajātatara iti ॥03-191-1॥
[मार्कण्डेयम् (mārkaṇḍeyam) - Markandeya; (the sage); ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; पाण्डवाश्च (pāṇḍavāś ca) - and the Pandavas; पर्यपृच्छन् (paryapṛcchan) - enquired all around; अस्ति (asti) - is; exists; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; anybody; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - from you; चिरजाततर (cirajātatara) - longer-born; elder; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Markandeya, sages, and the Pandavas enquired all around: "Is there anyone from you who is longer-born (elder)?" thus.)
Markandeya, the sages, and the Pandavas asked: "Is there anyone among you who was born before (is more elderly)?" (03-191-1)
स तानुवाच अस्ति खलु राजर्षिरिन्द्रद्युम्नो नाम क्षीणपुण्यस्त्रिदिवात्प्रच्युतः कीर्तिस्ते व्युच्छिन्नेति स मामुपातिष्ठत् अथ प्रत्यभिजानाति मां भवानिति ॥०३-१९१-२॥
sa tānuvāca asti khalu rājarṣirindradyumno nāma kṣīṇapuṇyas tridivāt pracyutaḥ kīrtis te vyucchinne ti sa mām upātiṣṭhat atha pratyabhijānāti māṃ bhavān iti ॥03-191-2॥

(He said to them: "There is indeed a royal sage named Indradyumna, whose merit is exhausted, fallen from heaven, and your fame is destroyed thus." He approached me. Then, you recognize me thus.)
He said to them: "There is indeed a royal sage named Indradyumna, whose merit is exhausted and who has fallen from heaven. Thus, your fame is destroyed." He approached me, and then you recognized me. (03-191-2)
तमहमब्रुवम् न वयं रासायनिकाः शरीरोपतापेनात्मनः समारभामहेऽर्थानामनुष्ठानम् ॥०३-१९१-३॥
tam aham abruvam na vayaṃ rāsāyanikāḥ śarīropatāpena ātmanaḥ samārabhamahe 'rthānām anuṣṭhānam ॥03-191-3॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - spoke; न (na) - not; वयम् (vayam) - we; रासायनिकाः (rāsāyanikāḥ) - alchemists; शरीर-उपतापेन (śarīra-upatāpena) - by bodily affliction; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; समारभामहे (samārabhamahe) - we undertake; अर्थानाम् (arthānām) - of objectives; अनुष्ठानम् (anuṣṭhānam) - undertaking;]
(Him I spoke: not we alchemists by bodily affliction of oneself undertake of objectives undertaking.)
I said to him: We are not alchemists, we do not undertake the performance of objectives by causing affliction to our own body. (03-191-3)
अस्ति खलु हिमवति प्राकारकर्णो नामोलूकः स भवन्तं यदि जानीयात् प्रकृष्टे चाध्वनि हिमवान् तत्रासौ प्रतिवसतीति ॥०३-१९१-४॥
asti khalu himavati prākārakarṇo nāmolūkaḥ sa bhavantaṃ yadi jānīyāt prakṛṣṭe cādhvani himavān tatrāsau prativasatīti ॥03-191-4॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; खलु (khalu) - indeed; हिमवति (himavati) - in Himavat (the Himalaya); प्राकारकर्णः (prākārakarṇaḥ) - Prākārakarṇa (name); नाम (nāma) - named; उलूकः (olūkaḥ) - owl; सः (saḥ) - he; भवन्तम् (bhavantaṃ) - you (honorific); यदि (yadi) - if; जानीयात् (jānīyāt) - should know; प्रकृष्टे (prakṛṣṭe) - excellent; च (ca) - and; अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the path; हिमवान् (himavān) - Himavat (the Himalaya); तत्र (tatra) - there; असौ (asau) - he; प्रतिवसति (prativasati) - dwells; इति (iti) - thus;]
(There is indeed in Himavat an owl named Prākārakarṇa; he, if he should know you, and on the excellent path (to) Himavat, there he, thus, dwells.)
Indeed, there is in Himavat a certain owl named Prākārakarṇa; if he knows you, on the excellent road to the Himalaya, he dwells there. (03-191-4)
स मामश्वो भूत्वा तत्रावहद्यत्र बभूवोलूकः ॥०३-१९१-५॥
sa māmaśvo bhūtvā tatrāvahadyatra babhūvolūkaḥ ॥03-191-5॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अश्वः (aśvaḥ) - horse; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; तत्र (tatra) - there; आवहत् (āvahat) - brought; यत्र (yatra) - where; बभूव (babhūva) - became; उलूकः (olūkaḥ) - owl;]
(He me horse having become there brought where became owl.)
He, having become a horse, brought me there, where he became an owl. (03-191-5)
अथैनं स राजर्षिः पर्यपृच्छत् प्रत्यभिजानाति मां भवानिति ॥०३-१९१-६॥
athainaṁ sa rājarṣiḥ paryapṛcchat pratyabhijānāti māṁ bhavān iti ॥03-191-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; स (sa) - he; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - asked (around, in detail); प्रत्यभिजानाति (pratyabhijānāti) - recognizes; माम् (mām) - me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then him, he the royal sage asked (in detail), "You recognize me, do you thus?")
Then that royal sage questioned him in detail, saying, "Do you recognize me?" (03-191-6)
स मुहूर्तं ध्यात्वाब्रवीदेनम् नाभिजाने भवन्तमिति ॥०३-१९१-७॥
sa muhūrtaṃ dhyātvā abravīd enam na abhijānē bhavantam iti ॥03-191-7॥
[स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - after meditating; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एनम् (enam) - to him; न (na) - not; अभिजाने (abhijānē) - I know; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you (honorific); इति (iti) - thus;]
(He for a moment after meditating said to him, not I know you thus.)
After meditating for a moment, he said to him, "I do not recognize you." (03-191-7)
स एवमुक्तो राजर्षिरिन्द्रद्युम्नः पुनस्तमुलूकमब्रवीत् अस्ति कश्चिद्भवतश्चिरजाततर इति ॥०३-१९१-८॥
sa evam-ukto rājarṣir-indradyumnaḥ punas tam ulūkam abravīt asti kaścid bhavataś cirajāta-tara iti ॥03-191-8॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम्-उक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; राजर्षि: (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; इन्द्रद्युम्नः (indradyumnaḥ) - Indradyumna; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तम् (tam) - to him; उलूकम् (ulūkam) - the owl; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अस्ति (asti) - is; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; भवत: (bhavataḥ) - of you; चिरजाततरः (cirajātataraḥ) - older-born; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He, thus addressed, the royal sage Indradyumna, again to him, the owl, said: "Is there someone older-born than you?" thus.)
Thus addressed, the royal sage Indradyumna again said to the owl: "Is there anyone older-born than you?" (03-191-8)
स एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीदेनम् अस्ति खल्विन्द्रद्युम्नसरो नाम तस्मिन्नाडीजङ्घो नाम बकः प्रतिवसति सोऽस्मत्तश्चिरजाततरः तं पृच्छेति ॥०३-१९१-९॥
sa evam-ukto'bravīd-enam asti khalv-indra-dyumna-saro nāma tasmin nāḍī-jaṅgho nāma bakaḥ prativasati saḥ asmataḥ ca cirajāta-taraḥ tam pṛccha iti ॥03-191-9॥
[स (saḥ) - he; एवम्-उक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) said; एनम् (enam) - to him; अस्ति (asti) - there is; खलु (khalu) - indeed; इन्द्रद्युम्नसरो नाम (indra-dyumna-saraḥ nāma) - named Indradyumna Lake; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नाडीजङ्घः नाम (nāḍī-jaṅghaḥ nāma) - named Nāḍījaṅgha; बकः (bakaḥ) - heron; प्रतिवसति (prativasati) - dwells; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्मत्तः च (asmataḥ ca) - than us also; चिरजाततरः (cirajāta-taraḥ) - older born; तम् (tam) - him; पृच्छ (pṛccha) - ask; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He, thus addressed, said to him: "There is indeed a lake named Indradyumna; in that, a heron named Nāḍījaṅgha dwells; he is also older born than us; ask him thus." (03-191-9))
Thus addressed, he said: "There is indeed a lake called Indradyumna, and in it dwells a heron named Nāḍījaṅgha. He is older than us; so ask him." (03-191-9)
तत इन्द्रद्युम्नो मां चोलूकं चादाय तत्सरोऽगच्छद्यत्रासौ नाडीजङ्घो नाम बको बभूव ॥०३-१९१-१०॥
tat indraḍyumno māṁ colūkaṁ cādāya tatsaro'gacchadyatrāsau nāḍījaṅgho nāma bako babhūva ॥03-191-10॥
[तत् (tat) - then; इन्द्रद्युम्नः (indraḍyumnaḥ) - Indradyumna (proper name, masculine nominative singular); माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; ऊलूकम् (ūlūkam) - owl (accusative singular, object of taking); च (ca) - and; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तत् (tat) - that; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; यत्र (yatra) - where; असौ (asau) - that (one); नाडीजङ्घः (nāḍījaṅghaḥ) - Nāḍījaṅgha (proper name, masculine nominative singular); नाम (nāma) - by name; बकः (bakaḥ) - heron; बभूव (babhūva) - was;]
(Then Indradyumna, having taken me and the owl, went to that lake where that one Nāḍījaṅgha by name, a heron, was.)
Then Indradyumna, taking me and the owl, went to that lake where that heron named Nāḍījaṅgha was. (03-191-10)
सोऽस्माभिः पृष्टः भवानिन्द्रद्युम्नं राजानं प्रत्यभिजानातीति ॥०३-१९१-११॥
so'smābhiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ bhavān indradyumnaṃ rājānaṃ pratyabhijānāti iti ॥03-191-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); इन्द्रद्युम्नं (indradyumnaṃ) - Indradyumna; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; प्रत्यभिजानाति (pratyabhijānāti) - recognize; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He by us asked (was), you Indradyumna king recognize thus.)
He has been asked by us, "Do you recognize King Indradyumna?" (03-191-11)
स एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीन्मुहूर्तं ध्यात्वा नाभिजानाम्यहमिन्द्रद्युम्नं राजानमिति ॥०३-१९१-१२॥
sa evam uktaḥ abravīt muhūrtam dhyātvā na abhijānāmi aham indradyumnam rājānam iti ॥03-191-12॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; न (na) - not; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I recognize; अहम् (aham) - I; इन्द्रद्युम्नम् (indradyumnam) - Indradyumna; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He thus addressed, said, for a moment having meditated, not I recognize I Indradyumna the king thus.)
Thus addressed, he said after meditating for a moment: "I do not recognize Indradyumna the king thus." (03-191-12)
ततः सोऽस्माभिः पृष्टः अस्ति कश्चिदन्यो भवतश्चिरजाततर इति ॥०३-१९१-१३॥
tataḥ so'smābhiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ asti kaścidanyo bhavataścirajātatara iti ॥03-191-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; अस्ति (asti) - is; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - else; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - than you; चिरजाततरः (cirajātataraḥ) - born earlier; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then he by us was asked: Is there someone else born earlier than you thus?)
Then we asked him: "Is there anyone else who was born before you?" (03-191-13)
स नोऽब्रवीदस्ति खल्विहैव सरस्यकूपारो नाम कच्छपः प्रतिवसति स मत्तश्चिरजाततर इति स यदि कथञ्चिदभिजानीयादिमं राजानं तमकूपारं पृच्छाम इति ॥०३-१९१-१४॥
sa no'bravīd asti khalv ihaiva sarasy akūpāro nāma kacchapaḥ prativasati sa mattaś cirajātatara iti sa yadi kathañcid abhijānīyād imaṃ rājānaṃ tam akūpāraṃ pṛcchāma iti ॥03-191-14॥
[स (sa) - he; नः (naḥ) - to us; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अस्ति (asti) - there is; खलु (khalu) - indeed; इह एव (iha eva) - right here; सरसि (sarasi) - in the lake; कूपारः (akūpāraḥ) - Akūpāra (proper name); नाम (nāma) - named; कच्छपः (kacchapaḥ) - tortoise; प्रतिवसति (prativasati) - dwells; सः (saḥ) - he; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; चिरजाततरः (cirajātataraḥ) - born long ago; इति (iti) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; यदि (yadi) - if; कथञ्चित् (kathañcit) - somehow; अभिजानीयात् (abhijānīyāt) - would recognize; इमम् (imam) - this; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; तम् (tam) - him; अकूपारम् (akūpāram) - Akūpāra (proper name, accusative); पृच्छाम (pṛcchāma) - let us ask; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He said to us: "There is indeed right here in the lake a tortoise named Akūpāra who dwells. He is, from me, born much earlier—thus. If he would somehow recognize this king, let us ask that Akūpāra—thus." (03-191-14))
He said to us: "Indeed, there is here in this lake a tortoise named Akūpāra. He has been living here much longer than I. If somehow he recognizes this king, then let us ask Akūpāra." (03-191-14)
ततः स बकस्तमकूपारं कच्छपं विज्ञापयामास अस्त्यस्माकमभिप्रेतं भवन्तं कञ्चिदर्थमभिप्रष्टुम् साध्वागम्यतां तावदिति ॥०३-१९१-१५॥
tataḥ sa bakas tam akūpāraṃ kacchapam vijñāpayām āsa asti asmākam abhipretaṃ bhavantaṃ kañcid artham abhipraṣṭum sādhv āgamyatāṃ tāvad iti ॥03-191-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; बकः (bakaḥ) - heron; तम् (tam) - that; अकूपारम् (akūpāram) - to the turtle; कच्छपम् (kacchapam) - turtle; विज्ञापयाम् (vijñāpayām) - informed; आस (āsa) - he did; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; अभिप्रेतम् (abhipretam) - desired; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - to you; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - a certain; अर्थम् (artham) - matter; अभिप्रष्टुम् (abhipraṣṭum) - to ask; साधु (sādhu) - well; आगम्यताम् (āgamyatām) - let it be come; तावत् (tāvat) - just now; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then he the heron informed that turtle: "There is of us a desired matter to ask to you; well, let it be come just now," thus.)
Then the heron said to that turtle: "There is something we desire to ask you; please come at once," thus. (03-191-15)
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स कच्छपस्तस्मात्सरस उत्थायाभ्यगच्छद्यत्र तिष्ठामो वयं तस्य सरसस्तीरे ॥०३-१९१-१६॥
etat śrutvā sa kacchapaḥ tasmāt sarasa utthāya abhyagacchat yatra tiṣṭhāmaḥ vayaṃ tasya sarasaḥ tīre ॥03-191-16॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (etat śrutvā) - having heard this; स (sa) - he; कच्छपः (kacchapaḥ) - tortoise; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; सरसः (sarasaḥ) - lake; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; यत्र (yatra) - where; तिष्ठामः (tiṣṭhāmaḥ) - we stand; वयम् (vayaṃ) - we; तस्य (tasya) - of that; सरसः (sarasaḥ) - lake; तीरे (tīre) - on the bank;]
(Having heard this, he tortoise, from that lake having arisen, approached where we stand, on the bank of that lake.)
Having heard this, the tortoise rose from that lake and came to where we were standing on the bank of that lake. (03-191-16)
आगतं चैनं वयमपृच्छाम भवानिन्द्रद्युम्नं राजानमभिजानातीति ॥०३-१९१-१७॥
āgataṁ ca enaṁ vayam-apṛcchāma bhavān-indradyumnaṁ rājānam-abhijānāti iti ॥03-191-17॥
[आगतं (āgatam) - arrived; come; च (ca) - and; एनं (enaṁ) - him; this one; वयम् (vayam) - we; अपृच्छाम (apṛcchāma) - asked; inquired; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (polite); इन्द्रद्युम्नं (indradyumnaṁ) - Indradyumna; (proper noun); राजानम् (rājānam) - king; ruler; अभिजानाति (abhijānāti) - recognizes; knows; इति (iti) - thus; (quotation marker);]
(Arrived and him we asked, you Indradyumna king recognizes thus.)
When he arrived, we asked him, "Do you recognize King Indradyumna?" (03-191-17)
स मुहूर्तं ध्यात्वा बाष्पपूर्णनयन उद्विग्नहृदयो वेपमानो विसञ्ज्ञकल्पः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत् किमहमेनं न प्रत्यभिजानामि अहं ह्यनेन सहस्रकृत्वः पूर्वमग्निचितिषूपहितपूर्वः सरश्चेदमस्य दक्षिणादत्ताभिर्गोभिरतिक्रममाणाभिः कृतम् अत्र चाहं प्रतिवसामीति ॥०३-१९१-१८॥
sa muhūrtaṃ dhyātvā bāṣpapūrṇanayana udvignahṛdayaḥ vepamānaḥ visañjñakalpaḥ prāñjalir abravīt kim aham enaṃ na pratyabhijānāmi ahaṃ hy anena sahasrakṛtvaḥ pūrvam agnicitiṣu upahitapūrvaḥ saraḥ ca idam asya dakṣiṇādattābhiḥ gobhiḥ atikramamāṇābhiḥ kṛtam atra ca ahaṃ prativasāmīti ॥03-191-18॥
[स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtam) - for an instant; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - after meditating; बाष्पपूर्णनयन (bāṣpapūrṇanayana) - with eyes filled with tears; उद्विग्नहृदयो (udvignahṛdayaḥ) - with agitated heart; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; विसञ्ज्ञकल्पः (visañjñakalpaḥ) - as if unconscious; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; किम् (kim) - why; अहम् (aham) - I; एनम् (enam) - him; न (na) - not; प्रत्यभिजानामि (pratyabhijānāmi) - do recognize; अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; अनेन (anena) - with him; सहस्रकृत्वः (sahasrakṛtvaḥ) - a thousand times; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; अग्निचितिषु (agnicitiṣu) - in fire-sacrifices; उपहितपूर्वः (upahitapūrvaḥ) - previously supplied; सरः (saraḥ) - the lake; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्य (asya) - by him; दक्षिणादत्ताभिः (dakṣiṇādattābhiḥ) - with cows given as offerings; गोभिः (gobhiḥ) - by cows; अतिक्रममाणाभिः (atikramamāṇābhiḥ) - being crossed; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was made; अत्र (atra) - here; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रतिवसामि (prativasāmi) - dwell; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He, after meditating for an instant, with eyes filled with tears, with agitated heart, trembling, as if unconscious, with folded hands, said: "Why do I not recognize him? I indeed, together with him, a thousand times before in fire-sacrifices, previously supplied, and this lake by him with cows given as offerings, being crossed by cows, was made. And here I dwell thus." (03-191-18))
He, after meditating for a moment, his eyes full of tears, heart agitated, trembling and appearing unconscious, with folded hands said: "Why do I not recognize him? I have, together with him, a thousand times before, provided offerings in fire sacrifices; and this lake, made by him with cows given as donations, crossed by such cows, I reside here." (03-191-18)
अथैतत्कच्छपेनोदाहृतं श्रुत्वा समनन्तरं देवलोकाद्देवरथः प्रादुरासीत् ॥०३-१९१-१९॥

[अथ (atha) - then; एतत् (etat) - this; कच्छपेन (kacchapena) - by the turtle; उदाहृतं (udāhṛtam) - spoken; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सुखनन्तरं (samanantaram) - immediately after; देवलोकात् (devalokāt) - from the world of the gods; देवरथः (devarathaḥ) - Devaratha (proper noun); प्रादुरासीत् (prādurāsīt) - appeared;]
(Then this, having been spoken by the turtle and having been heard, immediately after, from the world of the gods, Devaratha appeared.)
Then, after hearing these words spoken by the turtle, Devaratha appeared at once from the world of the gods. (03-191-19)
वाचश्चाश्रूयन्तेन्द्रद्युम्नं प्रति प्रस्तुतस्ते स्वर्गः यथोचितं स्थानमभिपद्यस्व कीर्तिमानसि अव्यग्रो याहीति ॥०३-१९१-२०॥
vācaś cāśrūyante indradyumnaṃ prati prastutaḥ te svargaḥ yathocitaṃ sthānam abhipadyasva kīrtimān asi avyagraḥ yāhi iti ॥03-191-20॥
[वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; च (ca) - and; आश्रूयन्ते (āśrūyante) - are heard; इन्द्रद्युम्नं (indradyumnaṃ) - Indradyumna (accusative); प्रति (prati) - towards; प्रस्तुतः (prastutaḥ) - addressed; ते (te) - to you; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; यथोचितं (yathocitaṃ) - as appropriate; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अभिपद्यस्व (abhipadyasva) - attain; कीर्तिमान् (kīrtimān) - famous; असि (asi) - you are; अव्यग्रः (avyagraḥ) - unagitated; याहि (yāhi) - go; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Words and are heard towards Indradyumna addressed: to you heaven as appropriate place attain. Famous you are, unagitated go thus.)
Words are heard addressed to Indradyumna: "To you, heaven is ready; attain the appropriate place. You are renowned, go forth untroubled." (03-191-20)
दिवं स्पृशति भूमिं च शब्दः पुण्यस्य कर्मणः। यावत्स शब्दो भवति तावत्पुरुष उच्यते ॥०३-१९१-२१॥
divaṃ spṛśati bhūmiṃ ca śabdaḥ puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ। yāvatsa śabdo bhavati tāvatpuruṣa ucyate ॥03-191-21॥
[दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; स्पृशति (spṛśati) - touches; भूमिं (bhūmiṃ) - earth; च (ca) - and; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; पुण्यस्य (puṇyasya) - of merit; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of deed; यावत्स (yāvatsa) - so long as; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; भवति (bhavati) - exists; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; पुरुष (puruṣa) - man; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Heaven touches and earth, sound of meritorious deed; so long as sound exists, so long a man is called.)
The sound of a meritorious deed touches both heaven and earth; for as long as this sound exists, so long is a man remembered (or called a man). (03-191-21)
अकीर्तिः कीर्त्यते यस्य लोके भूतस्य कस्यचित्। पतत्येवाधमाँल्लोकान्यावच्छब्दः स कीर्त्यते ॥०३-१९१-२२॥
akīrtiḥ kīrtyate yasya loke bhūtasya kasyacit. patatyevādhamāṁllokānyāvacchabdaḥ sa kīrtyate ॥03-191-22॥
[अकीर्तिः (akīrtiḥ) - ill-fame; कीर्त्यते (kīrtyate) - is spoken of; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; लोके (loke) - in the world; भूतस्य (bhūtasya) - of one (who has) existed; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of someone; पतति (patati) - falls; एव (eva) - indeed; अधमाँल्लोकान् (adhamāṁllokān) - to lowest worlds; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - the word; सः (saḥ) - he; कीर्त्यते (kīrtyate) - is mentioned;]
(Ill-fame is spoken of, of whom in the world, of one existing, of someone; he indeed falls to the lowest worlds, as long as the word is mentioned, he is spoken of.)
The ill-fame of a person, when spoken of in this world, causes him to fall to the lowest worlds—he keeps falling as long as his name is mentioned. (03-191-22)
तस्मात्कल्याणवृत्तः स्यादत्यन्ताय नरो भुवि। विहाय वृत्तं पापिष्ठं धर्ममेवाभिसंश्रयेत् ॥०३-१९१-२३॥
tasmātkalyāṇavṛttaḥ syādatyantāya naro bhuvi। vihāya vṛttaṃ pāpiṣṭhaṃ dharmamevābhisaṃśrayet ॥03-191-23॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कल्याणवृत्तः (kalyāṇavṛttaḥ) - one of virtuous conduct; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; अत्यन्ताय (atyantāya) - for the highest (good); नरः (naraḥ) - man; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; विहाय (vihāya) - having abandoned; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - conduct; पापिष्ठं (pāpiṣṭham) - most sinful; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; एव (eva) - only; अभिसंश्रयेत् (abhisaṃśrayet) - should resort;]
(Therefore, one of virtuous conduct should be for the highest good, man on earth. Having abandoned conduct most sinful, righteousness only should resort.)
Therefore, a man on earth should have virtuous conduct for the highest good; having abandoned the most sinful conduct, he should resort only to righteousness. (03-191-23)
इत्येतच्छ्रुत्वा स राजाब्रवीत् तिष्ठ तावद्यावदिदानीमिमौ वृद्धौ यथास्थानं प्रतिपादयामीति ॥०३-१९१-२४॥
ity etac chrutvā sa rājā abravīt tiṣṭha tāvat yāvat idānīm imau vṛddhau yathā-sthānaṃ pratipādayāmi iti ॥03-191-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stay; तावत् (tāvat) - for now; यावत् (yāvat) - until; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; इमौ (imau) - these two; वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - elders; यथा (yathā) - as; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; प्रतिपादयामि (pratipādayāmi) - I shall restore; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Thus, having heard this, he, the king, spoke: "Stay for now until I now have restored these two elders to their place.")
Having heard this, the king said: "Stay here for now, until I restore these two elders to their proper place." (03-191-24)
स मां प्राकारकर्णं चोलूकं यथोचिते स्थाने प्रतिपाद्य तेनैव यानेन संसिद्धो यथोचितं स्थानं प्रतिपन्नः ॥०३-१९१-२५॥
sa māṃ prākārakarṇaṃ colūkaṃ yathocite sthāne pratipādya tenaiva yānena saṃsiddho yathocitaṃ sthānaṃ pratipannaḥ ॥03-191-25॥
[स (sa) - he; मां (māṃ) - me; प्राकारकर्णं (prākārakarṇam) - fort wall’s angle; च (ca) - and; ओलूकं (olūkam) - watchtower; यथोचिते (yathocite) - as appropriate; स्थाने (sthāne) - at the place; प्रतिपाद्य (pratipādya) - having placed; तेनैव (tenaiva) - with that very; यानेन (yānena) - vehicle; संसिद्धः (saṃsiddhaḥ) - having accomplished; यथोचितं (yathocitam) - as appropriate; स्थानं (sthānam) - place; प्रतिपन्नः (pratipannaḥ) - having reached;]
(He, having placed me at the fort wall’s angle and at the watchtower at the appropriate place, with that very vehicle, having accomplished (his purpose), reached the proper place.)
He placed me at the angle of the fort wall and the watchtower at the appropriate location, and then, having completed his task with that same vehicle, reached the suitable place. (03-191-25)
एतन्मयानुभूतं चिरजीविना दृष्टमिति पाण्डवानुवाच मार्कण्डेयः ॥०३-१९१-२६॥
etan mayānubhūtaṁ cirajīvinā dṛṣṭam iti pāṇḍavān uvāca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ ॥03-191-26॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; अनुभूतम् (anubhūtam) - experienced; चिरजीविना (cirajīvinā) - as a long-lived one; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; इति (iti) - thus; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pāṇḍavas; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya;]
(This, by me, experienced, as a long-lived one, seen, thus, to the Pāṇḍavas, said Markandeya.)
Markandeya, as one who has lived long, said to the Pāṇḍavas, 'This has been experienced and seen by me.' (03-191-26)
पाण्डवाश्चोचुः प्रीताः साधु शोभनं कृतं भवता राजानमिन्द्रद्युम्नं स्वर्गलोकाच्च्युतं स्वे स्थाने स्वर्गे पुनः प्रतिपादयतेति ॥०३-१९१-२७॥
pāṇḍavāś cocuḥ prītāḥ sādhu śobhanaṃ kṛtaṃ bhavatā rājānam indradyumnaṃ svargalokāc cyutaṃ sve sthāne svarge punaḥ pratipādayateti ॥03-191-27॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - gladdened; साधु (sādhu) - well done; शोभनं (śobhanam) - excellent; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; इन्द्रद्युम्नं (indradyumnam) - Indradyumna; स्वर्गलोकात् (svargalokāt) - from the heavenly world; च्युतं (cyutam) - fallen; स्वे (sve) - to his own; स्थाने (sthāne) - place; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रतिपादयते (pratipādayate) - restores; इति (iti) - thus;]
(The Pāṇḍavas, gladdened, said: "Well done, excellent is what has been done by you! King Indradyumna, fallen from the heavenly world, to his own place in heaven again restores thus." (03-191-27))
The Pāṇḍavas, pleased, said: "Well done! What you have done is excellent—you are restoring King Indradyumna, who had fallen from the heavenly world, once again to his proper place in heaven." (03-191-27)
अथैनानब्रवीदसौ ननु देवकीपुत्रेणापि कृष्णेन नरके मज्जमानो राजर्षिर्नृगस्तस्मात्कृच्छ्रात्समुद्धृत्य पुनः स्वर्गं प्रतिपादित इति ॥०३-१९१-२८॥
athainān abravīd asau nanu devakī-putreṇa api kṛṣṇena narake majjamānaḥ rājarṣiḥ nṛgaḥ tasmāt kṛcchrāt samuddhṛtya punaḥ svargaṃ pratipādita iti ॥03-191-28॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) spoke; असौ (asau) - this one; ननु (nanu) - indeed; देवकीपुत्रेण (devakī-putreṇa) - by the son of Devakī; अपि (api) - also; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; नरके (narake) - in hell; मज्जमानः (majjamānaḥ) - sinking; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - king-sage; नृगः (nṛgaḥ) - Nṛga; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from distress; समुद्धृत्य (samuddhṛtya) - having lifted out; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - to heaven; प्रतिपादितः (pratipāditaḥ) - caused to attain; इति (iti) - so; ॥०३-१९१-२८॥ (॥03-191-28॥) - (03-191-28);]
(Then this one spoke to him: "Indeed, by Devakī's son, even by Kṛṣṇa, king-sage Nṛga, sinking in hell, from that distress, having been lifted out, again, to heaven, was caused to attain," thus (03-191-28).)
Then he said to him, "Indeed, by Devakī's son, that Kṛṣṇa, king-sage Nṛga, who was sinking in hell, was lifted out of that distress and again made to attain heaven," (03-191-28).
