yudhiṣṭhiro dharmarājaḥ papraccha bharatarṣabha. mārkaṇḍeyaṃ tapovṛddhaṃ dīrghāyuṣam akalmaṣam ॥03-192-1॥

विदितास्तव धर्मज्ञ देवदानवराक्षसाः। राजवंशाश्च विविधा ऋषिवंशाश्च शाश्वताः ॥ न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चिदस्मिँल्लोके द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-१९२-२॥
viditās tava dharmajña devadānavarākṣasāḥ। rājavaṁśāś ca vividhā ṛṣivaṁśāś ca śāśvatāḥ॥ na te'sty aviditaṁ kiñcid asmiñ loke dvijottama॥03-192-2॥

(Known to you, knower of dharma, are devas, dānavas, and rākṣasas; royal lineages and various sages' lineages and eternal ones. Not to you is anything unknown in this world, O best of twice-born.)
You, knower of dharma, are aware of the devas, dānavas, rākṣasas, royal lineages, and the various ancient lineages of sages. There is nothing unknown to you in this world, O best of the twice-born. (03-192-2)
कथां वेत्सि मुने दिव्यां मनुष्योरगरक्षसाम्। एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तत्त्वेन कथितं द्विज ॥०३-१९२-३॥
kathāṃ vetsi mune divyāṃ manuṣyoragarakṣasām। etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ tattvena kathitaṃ dvija ॥03-192-3॥

O twice-born, I wish to hear from you, truly told, the divine story of humans, serpents, and rākṣasas, which you know, O sage. (03-192-3)
कुवलाश्व इति ख्यात इक्ष्वाकुरपराजितः। कथं नाम विपर्यासाद्धुन्धुमारत्वमागतः ॥०३-१९२-४॥
kuvalāśva iti khyāta ikṣvākuraparājitaḥ। kathaṃ nāma viparyāsāddhundhumāratvamāgataḥ ॥03-192-4॥

एतदिच्छामि तत्त्वेन ज्ञातुं भार्गवसत्तम। विपर्यस्तं यथा नाम कुवलाश्वस्य धीमतः ॥०३-१९२-५॥

O best of the Bhārgavas, I wish to know in truth how the wise Kuvalāśva came to be reversed. (03-192-5)

hanta te kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu rājanyudhiṣṭhira | dharmiṣṭham idam ākhyānaṃ dhundhumārasya tac chṛṇu ॥03-192-6॥

Indeed, I will tell you, listen, O king Yudhiṣṭhira. Listen to this most righteous story of Dhundhumāra. (03-192-6)
यथा स राजा इक्ष्वाकुः कुवलाश्वो महीपतिः। धुन्धुमारत्वमगमत्तच्छृणुष्व महीपते ॥०३-१९२-७॥
yathā sa rājy ikṣvākuḥ kuvalāśvo mahīpatiḥ। dhundhumāratvam agamat tac chṛṇuṣva mahīpate॥03-192-7॥

As the king Ikṣvāku, Kuvalāśva, lord of the earth, became Dhundhumāra, hear that, O king. (03-192-7)
महर्षिर्विश्रुतस्तात उत्तङ्क इति भारत। मरुधन्वसु रम्येषु आश्रमस्तस्य कौरव ॥०३-१९२-८॥
maharṣirviśrutastāta uttaṅka iti bhārata. marudhanvasu ramyeṣu āśramastasya kaurava ॥03-192-8॥

O Bhārata, the famed great seer named Uttaṅka, O dear one, had his hermitage in the delightful regions of the desert, O Kaurava. (03-192-8)
उत्तङ्कस्तु महाराज तपोऽतप्यत्सुदुश्चरम्। आरिराधयिषुर्विष्णुं बहून्वर्षगणान्विभो ॥०३-१९२-९॥
uttaṅkastu mahārāja tapo'tapyatsuduścaram| ārirādhayiṣurviṣṇuṃ bahūnvarṣagaṇān vibho ॥03-192-9॥
[उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttanka; (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; (indeed; emphasis); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; (vocative); तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; अतप्यत् (atapyat) - performed; (practiced); सुदुश्चरम् (suduścaram) - very difficult to accomplish; आरिराधयिषुः (ārirādhayiṣuḥ) - desiring to propitiate; wishing to please; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; (proper noun; accusative); बहून् (bahūn) - many; वर्षगणान् (varṣagaṇān) - groups of years; many years; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; (vocative);]

तस्य प्रीतः स भगवान्साक्षाद्दर्शनमेयिवान्। दृष्ट्वैव चर्षिः प्रह्वस्तं तुष्टाव विविधैः स्तवैः ॥०३-१९२-१०॥
tasya prītaḥ sa bhagavān sākṣād darśanam eyivān। dṛṣṭvaiva ca ṛṣiḥ prahva-staṃ tuṣṭāva vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ॥03-192-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - appearance; एयिवान् (eyivān) - came (having come); दृष्ट्वा एव (dṛṣṭvā eva) - on seeing indeed; च (ca) - and; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage; प्रह्वस्तम् (prahva-stam) - bowed; तुष्टाव (tuṣṭāva) - praised; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; स्तवैः (stavaiḥ) - hymns;]
(Of him, pleased, he, the blessed one, directly appearance having come. Seeing indeed and the sage bowed, praised with various hymns.)
Pleased with him, the Blessed Lord appeared directly. On seeing him, the sage, bowing down, praised him with various hymns. (03-192-10)
त्वया देव प्रजाः सर्वाः सदेवासुरमानवाः। स्थावराणि च भूतानि जङ्गमानि तथैव च ॥ ब्रह्म वेदाश्च वेद्यं च त्वया सृष्टं महाद्युते ॥०३-१९२-११॥
tvayā deva prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevāsuramānavāḥ। sthāvarāṇi ca bhūtāni jaṅgamāni tathaiva ca॥ brahma vedāś ca vedyaṃ ca tvayā sṛṣṭaṃ mahādyute॥03-192-11॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; देव (deva) - O god; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सदेवासुरमानवाः (sadevāsuramānavāḥ) - along with gods, asuras, and men; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - stationary beings; च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - living beings; जङ्गमानि (jaṅgamāni) - moving beings; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahma; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; वेद्यं (vedyaṃ) - that which is to be known; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सृष्टं (sṛṣṭaṃ) - created; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly luminous one;]
(By you, O god, all creatures, along with gods, asuras, and men, stationary beings and living beings and moving beings likewise and Brahma and Vedas and that which is to be known and by you created, O greatly luminous one.)
O god, by you all creatures, including gods, asuras, and men, as well as stationary and moving beings, are created; Brahma, the Vedas, and that which is to be known are also created by you, O greatly radiant one. (03-192-11)
शिरस्ते गगनं देव नेत्रे शशिदिवाकरौ। निःश्वासः पवनश्चापि तेजोऽग्निश्च तवाच्युत ॥ बाहवस्ते दिशः सर्वाः कुक्षिश्चापि महार्णवः ॥०३-१९२-१२॥
śiras te gaganaṃ deva netre śaśi-divākarau। niḥśvāsaḥ pavanaś cāpi tejo'gniś ca tavācyuta ॥ bāhavas te diśaḥ sarvāḥ kukṣiś cāpi mahārṇavaḥ ॥03-192-12॥
[शिरस् (śiras) - head; ते (te) - your; गगनं (gaganaṃ) - sky; देव (deva) - O Lord; नेत्रे (netre) - eyes; शशि (śaśi) - moon; दिवाकरौ (divākarau) - and sun; निःश्वासः (niḥśvāsaḥ) - breath; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - wind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; अग्निः (agniḥ) - and fire; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; अच्युत (acyuta) - Acyuta (O unfallen one); बाहवः (bāhavaḥ) - arms; ते (te) - your; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; कुक्षिः (kukṣiḥ) - abdomen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महार्णवः (mahārṇavaḥ) - great ocean;]
(Your head, O Lord, (is) the sky; eyes (are) the moon and sun; breath (is) the wind also, and splendor and fire, O Acyuta, (are) yours. Arms (are) your all directions; abdomen also (is) the great ocean.)
O Lord, your head is the sky; your eyes are the moon and the sun; your breath is the wind, your light is fire, O Acyuta. All the directions are your arms; your abdomen is also the great ocean. (03-192-12)
ऊरू ते पर्वता देव खं नाभिर्मधुसूदन। पादौ ते पृथिवी देवी रोमाण्योषधयस्तथा ॥०३-१९२-१३॥
ūrū te parvatā deva khaṃ nābhir madhusūdana। pādau te pṛthivī devī romāṇi oṣadhayas tathā ॥03-192-13॥
[ऊरू (ūrū) - thighs; ते (te) - your; पर्वता (parvatā) - mountains; देव (deva) - O god; खं (khaṃ) - sky; नाभिः (nābhiḥ) - navel; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; पादौ (pādau) - feet; ते (te) - your; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; देवी (devī) - goddess; रोमाणि (romāṇi) - hairs; ओषधयः (oṣadhayaḥ) - plants; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Thighs your mountains O god, sky (is your) navel O Madhusūdana, feet your earth goddess, hairs (are) plants so.)
O Madhusūdana, your thighs are the mountains, O god; the sky is your navel; your feet are the earth goddess; and your hairs, likewise, are the plants. (03-192-13)
इन्द्रसोमाग्निवरुणा देवासुरमहोरगाः। प्रह्वास्त्वामुपतिष्ठन्ति स्तुवन्तो विविधैः स्तवैः ॥०३-१९२-१४॥
indrasomāgnivaruṇā devāsuramahoragāḥ। prahvāstvāmupatiṣṭhanti stuvanto vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ ॥03-192-14॥
[इन्द्रसोमाग्निवरुणाः (indra-soma-agni-varuṇāḥ) - Indra; Soma; Agni; Varuṇa; देव-असुर-महोरगाः (deva-asura-mahoragāḥ) - gods; asuras; great serpents; प्रह्वाः (prahvāḥ) - humbly; respectfully; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उपतिष्ठन्ति (upatiṣṭhanti) - approach; attend; स्तुवन्तः (stuvantaḥ) - praising; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; स्तवैः (stavaiḥ) - hymns;]
(Indra, Soma, Agni, Varuṇa, gods, asuras, great serpents, humbly you approach, praising with various hymns.)

त्वया व्याप्तानि सर्वाणि भूतानि भुवनेश्वर। योगिनः सुमहावीर्याः स्तुवन्ति त्वां महर्षयः ॥०३-१९२-१५॥
tvayā vyāptāni sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhuvaneśvara। yoginaḥ sumahā-vīryāḥ stuvanti tvāṃ maharṣayaḥ ॥03-192-15॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; व्याप्तानि (vyāptāni) - pervaded; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; भुवनेश्वर (bhuvaneśvara) - O Lord of the worlds; योगिनः (yoginaḥ) - yogis; सुमहावीर्याः (sumahā-vīryāḥ) - of very great power; स्तुवन्ति (stuvanti) - praise; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(By you all beings are pervaded, O Lord of the worlds. Yogis of very great power, the great sages, praise you.)
O Lord of the worlds, all beings are pervaded by you. The yogis of immense power and the great sages praise you. (03-192-15)
त्वयि तुष्टे जगत्स्वस्थं त्वयि क्रुद्धे महद्भयम्। भयानामपनेतासि त्वमेकः पुरुषोत्तम ॥०३-१९२-१६॥
tvayi tuṣṭe jagatsvasthaṃ tvayi kruddhe mahadbhayam। bhayānām apanētāsi tvam ekaḥ puruṣottama ॥03-192-16॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; तुष्टे (tuṣṭe) - being pleased; जगत् (jagat) - world; स्वस्थं (svastham) - in harmony; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; क्रुद्धे (kruddhe) - being angered; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; भयानाम् (bhayānām) - of fears; अपनेताऽसि (apanetāsi) - you are the remover; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best among men;]
(In you being pleased, the world [is] in harmony; in you being angered, [there is] great fear. Of fears you are the remover, you alone, O best among men.)
When you are pleased, the world remains in harmony; when you are angered, there is great fear. You alone are the remover of all fears, O foremost among men. (03-192-16)
देवानां मानुषाणां च सर्वभूतसुखावहः। त्रिभिर्विक्रमणैर्देव त्रयो लोकास्त्वयाहृताः ॥ असुराणां समृद्धानां विनाशश्च त्वया कृतः ॥०३-१९२-१७॥
devānāṃ mānuṣāṇāṃ ca sarvabhūtasukhāvahaḥ। tribhirvikramaṇair deva trayo lokās tvayā hṛtāḥ॥ asurāṇāṃ samṛddhānāṃ vināśaś ca tvayā kṛtaḥ॥03-192-17॥
[देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; मानुषाणाम् (mānuṣāṇām) - of men; च (ca) - and; सर्वभूतसुखावहः (sarvabhūtasukhāvahaḥ) - bringer of happiness to all beings; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; विक्रमणैः (vikramaṇaiḥ) - strides; देव (deva) - O god; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आहृताः (āhṛtāḥ) - were taken; असुराणाम् (asurāṇām) - of the asuras; समृद्धानाम् (samṛddhānām) - of the prosperous; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was done;]
(Of the gods, of men, and bringer of happiness to all beings. By three strides, O god, the three worlds by you were taken. Of the prosperous asuras, destruction also by you was done.)
You are the bringer of happiness to all beings, to the gods and men alike. By your three strides, O god, the three worlds were taken by you. The destruction of the prosperous asuras was also accomplished by you. (03-192-17)
तव विक्रमणैर्देवा निर्वाणमगमन्परम्। पराभवं च दैत्येन्द्रास्त्वयि क्रुद्धे महाद्युते ॥०३-१९२-१८॥
tava vikramaṇair devā nirvāṇam agaman param। parābhavaṃ ca daityendrās tvayi kruddhe mahādyute ॥03-192-18॥

(Of your heroic deeds, the gods supreme liberation attained; and defeat the lords of the Daityas, in you being angry, O greatly resplendent one.)
By your heroic deeds, the gods attained supreme liberation; and the lords of the Daityas suffered defeat when you, O greatly radiant one, became angry. (03-192-18)
त्वं हि कर्ता विकर्ता च भूतानामिह सर्वशः। आराधयित्वा त्वां देवाः सुखमेधन्ति सर्वशः ॥०३-१९२-१९॥
tvaṃ hi kartā vikartā ca bhūtānāmiha sarvaśaḥ। ārādhayitvā tvāṃ devāḥ sukhamedhanti sarvaśaḥ॥03-192-19॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्ता (kartā) - creator; विकर्ता (vikartā) - transformer; च (ca) - and; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; इह (iha) - here; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; आराधयित्वा (ārādhayitvā) - having worshipped; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एधन्ति (edhanti) - thrive; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(You indeed creator transformer and of beings here entirely, having worshipped you gods happiness thrive entirely.)
For you indeed are the creator and transformer of all beings here in every way; having worshipped you, the gods wholly thrive in happiness. (03-192-19)
एवं स्तुतो हृषीकेश उत्तङ्केन महात्मना। उत्तङ्कमब्रवीद्विष्णुः प्रीतस्तेऽहं वरं वृणु ॥०३-१९२-२०॥
evaṁ stuto hṛṣīkeśa uttaṅkena mahātmanā। uttaṅkam abravīd viṣṇuḥ prītaḥ te'haṁ varaṁ vṛṇu ॥03-192-20॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - being praised; हृषीकेश (hṛṣīkeśa) - Hṛṣīkeśa (lord of the senses, Viṣṇu); उत्तङ्केन (uttaṅkena) - by Uttaṅka; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; उत्तङ्कम् (uttaṅkam) - to Uttaṅka; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - being pleased; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; वरम् (varam) - boon; वृणु (vṛṇu) - choose;]
(Thus, being praised, Hṛṣīkeśa by Uttaṅka the great-souled, to Uttaṅka Viṣṇu, being pleased, said: "To you I, boon choose." (03-192-20))
Thus, when Hṛṣīkeśa had been praised by the great-souled Uttaṅka, Viṣṇu, being pleased, said to Uttaṅka: "I am pleased with you. Choose a boon." (03-192-20)

पर्याप्तो मे वरो ह्येष यदहं दृष्टवान्हरिम्। पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यं स्रष्टारं जगतः प्रभुम् ॥०३-१९२-२१॥
paryāpto me varo hyeṣa yadahaṁ dṛṣṭavān harim। puruṣaṁ śāśvataṁ divyaṁ sraṣṭāraṁ jagataḥ prabhum॥03-192-21॥
[पर्याप्तः (paryāptaḥ) - sufficient; enough; मे (me) - for me; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; blessing; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; यत् (yat) - that; because; अहम् (aham) - I; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - have seen; हरिम् (harim) - Hari; (the Lord; Vishnu;) पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - the Person; being; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; स्रष्टारम् (sraṣṭāram) - the creator; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord; master;]
(Sufficient for me is this boon indeed, that I have seen Hari, the eternal, divine Person, the creator, lord of the world.)
This boon is enough for me, for I have now seen Hari—the eternal, divine Person, the creator and master of the world. (03-192-21)
विष्णुरुवाच॥
viṣṇuruvāca॥

प्रीतस्तेऽहमलौल्येन भक्त्या च द्विजसत्तम। अवश्यं हि त्वया ब्रह्मन्मत्तो ग्राह्यो वरो द्विज ॥०३-१९२-२२॥
prītaste'hamalāulyena bhaktyā ca dvijasattama। avaśyaṃ hi tvayā brahmanmatto grāhyo varo dvija ॥03-192-22॥
[प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; ते (te) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; अलौल्येन (alāulyena) - by freedom from greed; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - by devotion; च (ca) - and; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born; अवश्यम् (avaśyam) - certainly; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O brāhmaṇa; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; ग्राह्यः (grāhyaḥ) - to be accepted; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(Pleased by you, by freedom from greed and by devotion, O best of twice-born, certainly indeed by you, O brāhmaṇa, from me the boon is to be accepted, O twice-born.)
O best of twice-born, pleased by your freedom from greed and your devotion, I declare: certainly, O brāhmaṇa, you must accept a boon from me, O twice-born. (03-192-22)
एवं सञ्छन्द्यमानस्तु वरेण हरिणा तदा। उत्तङ्कः प्राञ्जलिर्वव्रे वरं भरतसत्तम ॥०३-१९२-२३॥
evaṃ sañchandyamānas tu vareṇa hariṇā tadā। uttaṅkaḥ prāñjalir vavre varaṃ bharatasattama ॥03-192-23॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सञ्छन्द्यमानः (sañchandyamānaḥ) - being offered (to choose freely); तु (tu) - but; वरेण (vareṇa) - with a boon; हरिणा (hariṇā) - by Hari (Vishnu); तदा (tadā) - then; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttanka; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; वरं (varaṃ) - the boon; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Thus, being offered to choose freely with a boon by Hari then, Uttanka with joined palms chose the boon, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, thus, when Hari offered him a boon, Uttanka, with joined palms, chose his boon. (03-192-23)
यदि मे भगवान्प्रीतः पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणः। धर्मे सत्ये दमे चैव बुद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा ॥ अभ्यासश्च भवेद्भक्त्या त्वयि नित्यं महेश्वर ॥०३-१९२-२४॥
yadi me bhagavānprītaḥ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇaḥ। dharme satye dame caiva buddhirbhavatu me sadā ॥ abhyāsaśca bhavedbhaktyā tvayi nityaṁ maheśvara ॥03-192-24॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; मे (me) - to me; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणः (puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇaḥ) - whose eyes resemble a lotus; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; दमे (dame) - in self-control; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; भवतु (bhavatu) - may be; मे (me) - to me; सदा (sadā) - always; अभ्यासः (abhyāsaḥ) - practice; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; त्वयि (tvayi) - unto you; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; महेश्वर (maheśvara) - O great Lord;]
(If to me the Lord, pleased, whose eyes resemble a lotus, in righteousness, in truth, and indeed in self-control, may understanding be to me always. And may practice be with devotion to you always, O great Lord.)
If the Lord, whose eyes are like lotuses, is pleased with me, may I always possess understanding in righteousness, truth, and self-control. And may I always practice devotion to you, O Maheshvara. (03-192-24)
विष्णुरुवाच॥
viṣṇuruvāca॥
[विष्णुḥ (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; (name of the deity); उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke;]

Viṣṇu said.
सर्वमेतद्धि भविता मत्प्रसादात्तव द्विज। प्रतिभास्यति योगश्च येन युक्तो दिवौकसाम् ॥ त्रयाणामपि लोकानां महत्कार्यं करिष्यसि ॥०३-१९२-२५॥
sarvam etad dhi bhavitā matprasādāt tava dvija। pratibhāsyati yogaś ca yena yukto divaukasām ॥ trayāṇām api lokānām mahat kāryaṃ kariṣyasi ॥03-192-25॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; shall become; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my favor; तव (tava) - for you; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; O Brāhmaṇa; प्रतिभास्यति (pratibhāsyati) - will shine forth; will become evident; योगः (yogaḥ) - union; yoga; च (ca) - and; येन (yena) - by which; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; possessed; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the gods; of the dwellers in heaven; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - even; also; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of worlds; महत् (mahat) - great; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - deed; task; action; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; you will accomplish;]
(All this indeed will be by my favor for you, O twice-born. And the yoga, by which endowed (you are), will shine forth among the gods. Of the three worlds also, you will accomplish a great deed.)
All this will surely happen for you through my grace, O Brāhmaṇa. The yoga by which you are endowed will become manifest among the gods, and you will accomplish a great task for the three worlds. (03-192-25)
उत्सादनार्थं लोकानां धुन्धुर्नाम महासुरः। तपस्यति तपो घोरं शृणु यस्तं हनिष्यति ॥०३-१९२-२६॥
utsādanārthaṁ lokānāṁ dhundhur nāma mahāsuraḥ। tapasyati tapo ghoraṁ śṛṇu yas taṁ haniṣyati ॥03-192-26॥
[उत्सादनार्थं (utsādanārtham) - for the purpose of destruction; लोकानां (lokānām) - of the worlds; धुन्धुः (dhundhuḥ) - Dhundhu; नाम (nāma) - by name; महासुरः (mahāsuraḥ) - great asura; तपस्यति (tapasyati) - performs penance; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; यः (yaḥ) - who; तं (taṁ) - him; हनिष्यति (haniṣyati) - will kill;]
(For the purpose of destruction of the worlds, Dhundhu by name, a great asura, performs terrible austerity; hear, who him will kill.)
Dhundhu, the great asura, by name, is performing terrible austerity for the destruction of the worlds; hear, who will kill him. (03-192-26)
बृहदश्व इति ख्यातो भविष्यति महीपतिः। तस्य पुत्रः शुचिर्दान्तः कुवलाश्व इति श्रुतः ॥०३-१९२-२७॥
bṛhadaśva iti khyāto bhaviṣyati mahīpatiḥ। tasya putraḥ śucir dāntaḥ kuvalāśva iti śrutaḥ॥03-192-27॥
[बृहदश्व (bṛhadaśva) - Bṛhadaśva (proper name); इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - renowned; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; तस्य (tasya) - of him; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-restrained; कुवलाश्व (kuvalāśva) - Kuvalāśva (proper name); इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - famed;]
(Bṛhadaśva thus renowned will become king. Of him, son pure, self-restrained, Kuvalāśva thus famed.)
Bṛhadaśva, so named, will become a renowned king. His son, pure and self-restrained, will be known as Kuvalāśva. (03-192-27)
स योगबलमास्थाय मामकं पार्थिवोत्तमः। शासनात्तव विप्रर्षे धुन्धुमारो भविष्यति ॥०३-१९२-२८॥
sa yogabalam āsthāya māmakaṃ pārthivottamaḥ । śāsanāt tava viprarṣe dhundhumāro bhaviṣyati ॥03-192-28॥
[स (sa) - he; योगबलम् (yogabalam) - power of yoga; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; मामकं (māmakaṃ) - my; पार्थिवोत्तमः (pārthivottamaḥ) - best among kings; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command; तव (tava) - your; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; धुन्धुमारः (dhundhumāraḥ) - Dhundhumāra; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(He, having resorted to the power of yoga, my best among kings, by your command, O best of Brāhmaṇas, Dhundhumāra will become.)
He, the best among my kings, having resorted to the power of yoga, at your command, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas, will become Dhundhumāra. (03-192-28)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

Markandeya said.
उत्तङ्कमेवमुक्त्वा तु विष्णुरन्तरधीयत।
uttaṅkamevamuktvā tu viṣṇurantaradhīyata.

(Uttanka thus having said but Viṣṇu disappeared.)
Having thus spoken to Uttanka, Viṣṇu disappeared.
