न तेऽभिगमनं ब्रह्मन्मोघमेतद्भविष्यति। पुत्रो ममायं भगवन्कुवलाश्व इति स्मृतः ॥०३-१९४-२॥
na te'bhigamanaṃ brahman mogham etad bhaviṣyati. putro mama ayaṃ bhagavan kuvalāśva iti smṛtaḥ ॥03-194-2॥

(Not for you the approach, O Brahman, in vain this will be. Son of mine, this O revered one, Kuvalāśva thus is named.)
O Brahman, your coming here will not be in vain. This son of mine, O revered one, is known as Kuvalāśva. (03-194-2)
धृतिमान्क्षिप्रकारी च वीर्येणाप्रतिमो भुवि। प्रियं वै सर्वमेतत्ते करिष्यति न संशयः ॥०३-१९४-३॥
dhṛtimān kṣipra-kārī ca vīryeṇa apratimo bhuvi। priyaṃ vai sarvam etat te kariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ॥03-194-3॥
[धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) - possessed of fortitude; क्षिप्रकारी (kṣipra-kārī) - one who acts swiftly; च (ca) - and; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by prowess; अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - unrivaled; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - for you; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - he will do; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Possessed of fortitude, swift-acting and, by prowess, unrivaled on the earth, indeed he will do all this dear for you—no doubt.)
He, possessed of fortitude, swift to act, and unrivaled in prowess on earth, will certainly do everything dear to you—there is no doubt. (03-194-3)
पुत्रैः परिवृतः सर्वैः शूरैः परिघबाहुभिः। विसर्जयस्व मां ब्रह्मन्न्यस्तशस्त्रोऽस्मि साम्प्रतम् ॥०३-१९४-४॥

(Surrounded by sons, by all, by heroes, with iron-rod-like arms, release me, O Brahman; I am one who has laid down weapon at present.)
O Brahman, surrounded on all sides by sons, by all these heroic men with arms like iron rods, release me now—for at present I am one who has laid down his weapon. (03-194-4)
तथास्त्विति च तेनोक्तो मुनिनामिततेजसा। स तमादिश्य तनयमुत्तङ्काय महात्मने ॥ क्रियतामिति राजर्षिर्जगाम वनमुत्तमम् ॥०३-१९४-५॥
tathāstveti ca tenokto munināmitatejasā। sa tamādiśya tanayamuttaṅkāya mahātmane ॥ kriyatāmiti rājarṣirjagāma vanamuttamam ॥03-194-5॥
[तथा अस्तु इति (tathā astu iti) - so be it thus; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was spoken; मुनिना (muninā) - by the sage; अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable splendor; सः (saḥ) - he; तम् आदिश्य (tam ādiśya) - having instructed him; तनयम् (tanayam) - the son; उत्तङ्काय (uttaṅkāya) - to Uttaṅka; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled; क्रियताम् इति (kriyatām iti) - let it be done, thus; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; वनम् उत्तमम् (vanam uttamam) - the excellent forest;]
(So be it thus—having been spoken by the sage of immeasurable splendor, he, having instructed his son to the great-souled Uttaṅka, saying 'let it be done', the royal sage departed to the excellent forest.)

O revered one, who is this Daitya of great power and rich in austerity? Whose son or grandson is he? I wish to know this. (03-194-6)
एवं महाबलो दैत्यो न श्रुतो मे तपोधन। एतदिच्छामि भगवन्याथातथ्येन वेदितुम् ॥ सर्वमेव महाप्राज्ञ विस्तरेण तपोधन ॥०३-१९४-७॥
evaṃ mahābalo daityo na śruto me tapodhana। etadicchāmi bhagavanyāthātathyena veditum ॥ sarvameva mahāprājña vistareṇa tapodhana ॥03-194-7॥

(Thus, the Daitya of great strength is not heard by me, O possessor of austerities. This I desire, O venerable one, truly to know. All indeed, O greatly wise one, in detail, O possessor of austerities.)
O possessor of austerities, I have not heard of such a mighty Daitya. I wish, O venerable one, to know this truly from you. Please tell me everything in detail, O greatly wise one, O possessor of austerities. (03-194-7)

śṛṇu rājan-idaṃ sarvaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ narādhipa। ekārṇave tadā ghore naṣṭe sthāvara-jaṅgame॥ pranaṣṭeṣu ca bhūteṣu sarveṣu bharatarṣabha॥03-194-8॥

(Listen, O king, to this all as it happened, O lord of men. In the one ocean then, when the terrible destruction (had occurred) with the immobile and mobile (beings) destroyed, and when all beings were destroyed, O best of the Bharatas.)
Listen, O king, to all this as it happened, O lord of men. When everything–immobile and mobile beings–was destroyed in the dreadful single ocean, and all creatures were lost, O best of the Bharatas. (03-194-8)
प्रभवः सर्वभूतानां शाश्वतः पुरुषोऽव्ययः। सुष्वाप भगवान्विष्णुरप्शय्यामेक एव ह ॥ नागस्य भोगे महति शेषस्यामिततेजसः ॥०३-१९४-९॥

(Origin of all beings, eternal, imperishable person,—slept the revered Viṣṇu on the water-bed, alone indeed truly; on the great coil of the serpent Śeṣa of boundless radiance.)

स्वपतस्तस्य देवस्य पद्मं सूर्यसमप्रभम्। नाभ्यां विनिःसृतं तत्र यत्रोत्पन्नः पितामहः ॥ साक्षाल्लोकगुरुर्ब्रह्मा पद्मे सूर्येन्दुसप्रभे ॥०३-१९४-११॥
svapatas tasya devasya padmaṁ sūryasamaprabham। nābhyāṁ viniḥsṛtaṁ tatra yatrotpannaḥ pitāmahaḥ ॥ sākṣāl lokagurur brahmā padme sūryendusaprabhe ॥03-194-11॥
[स्वपतस् (svapatas) - from the own body; तस्य (tasya) - of that; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; पद्मं (padmaṁ) - lotus; सूर्यसमप्रभम् (sūryasamaprabham) - with brilliance equal to the sun; नाभ्याम् (nābhyām) - from the navel; विनिःसृतं (viniḥsṛtaṁ) - issued forth; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - was born; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; लोकगुरुः (lokaguruḥ) - the guru of the world; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; पद्मे (padme) - on the lotus; सूर्येन्दुसप्रभे (sūryendusaprabhe) - with radiance of sun and moon;]
(From the own body of that god, a lotus with brilliance equal to the sun, from the navel issued forth there, where the grandsire was born. Directly, the guru of the world, Brahmā, on the lotus with the radiance of sun and moon.)
From that god's own body, a lotus as radiant as the sun issued forth from his navel. There, the grandsire (Brahmā), the direct guru of the world, was born on that lotus shining with the brilliance of the sun and the moon. (03-194-11)
चतुर्वेदश्चतुर्मूर्तिस्तथैव च चतुर्मुखः। स्वप्रभावाद्दुराधर्षो महाबलपराक्रमः ॥०३-१९४-१२॥
caturvedāś caturmūrtis tathaiva ca caturmukhaḥ। svaprabhāvād durādharṣo mahābalaparākramaḥ॥03-194-12॥
[चतुर्वेदः (caturvedaḥ) - knower of the four Vedas; चतुर्मूर्तिः (caturmūrtiḥ) - one having four forms; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; चतुर्मुखः (caturmukhaḥ) - four-faced; स्व-प्रभावात् (svaprabhāvāt) - by own power; दुराधर्षः (durādharṣaḥ) - invincible; महाबल-पराक्रमः (mahābala-parākramaḥ) - great in strength and valor;]

कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य दानवौ वीर्यवत्तरौ। मधुश्च कैटभश्चैव दृष्टवन्तौ हरिं प्रभुम् ॥०३-१९४-१३॥
kasyacit tv atha kālasya dānavau vīryavattarau। madhuś ca kaiṭabhaś caiva dṛṣṭavantau hariṁ prabhum ॥03-194-13॥

किरीटकौस्तुभधरं पीतकौशेयवाससम्। दीप्यमानं श्रिया राजंस्तेजसा वपुषा तथा ॥ सहस्रसूर्यप्रतिममद्भुतोपमदर्शनम् ॥०३-१९४-१५॥
kirīṭakaustubhadharaṃ pītakauśeyavāsasam। dīpyamānaṃ śriyā rājaṃstejasā vapuṣā tathā॥ sahasrasūryapratimamadbhutopamadarśanam॥03-194-15॥

विस्मयः सुमहानासीन्मधुकैटभयोस्तदा। दृष्ट्वा पितामहं चैव पद्मे पद्मनिभेक्षणम् ॥०३-१९४-१६॥
vismayaḥ sumahān āsīn madhukaiṭabhayoḥ tadā। dṛṣṭvā pitāmahaṃ caiva padme padmanibhekṣaṇam ॥03-194-16॥
[विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - astonishment; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; मधुकैटभयोः (madhukaiṭabhayoḥ) - of Madhu and Kaiṭabha; तदा (tadā) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the Grandfather (Brahmā); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पद्मे (padme) - in the lotus; पद्मनिभेक्षणम् (padmanibhekṣaṇam) - lotus-like eyes;]
(Astonishment very great was (in) Madhu and Kaiṭabha then, having seen indeed the Grandfather (Brahmā) in the lotus, with lotus-like eyes.)
Then, very great astonishment arose in Madhu and Kaiṭabha when they saw the Grandfather (Brahmā) seated in the lotus with his lotus-like eyes. (03-194-16)
वित्रासयेतामथ तौ ब्रह्माणममितौजसम्। वित्रास्यमानो बहुशो ब्रह्मा ताभ्यां महायशाः ॥ अकम्पयत्पद्मनालं ततोऽबुध्यत केशवः ॥०३-१९४-१७॥
vitrāsayetām atha tau brahmāṇam amitaujasaṃ। vitrāsyamāno bahuśo brahmā tābhyāṃ mahāyaśāḥ॥ akampayat padmanālaṃ tato budhyata keśavaḥ॥03-194-17॥
[वित्रासयेताम् (vitrāsayetām) - they both caused fear; अथ (atha) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasaṃ) - of immeasurable splendour; वित्रास्यमानः (vitrāsyamānaḥ) - being frightened; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - repeatedly; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; ताभ्याम् (tābhyām) - by those two; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; अकम्पयत् (akampayat) - shook; पद्मनालम् (padmanālam) - the stalk of the lotus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अबुध्यत (abudhyata) - became awake; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava;]
(They both caused fear then to Brahmā of immeasurable splendour. Being frightened repeatedly by those two, Brahmā of great fame shook the stalk of the lotus; then Keśava became awake. (03-194-17))
Then those two instilled fear in Brahmā of boundless splendour; Brahmā, greatly renowned, being repeatedly frightened by them, shook the lotus stalk; then Keśava awoke. (03-194-17)
अथापश्यत गोविन्दो दानवौ वीर्यवत्तरौ। दृष्ट्वा तावब्रवीद्देवः स्वागतं वां महाबलौ ॥ ददानि वां वरं श्रेष्ठं प्रीतिर्हि मम जायते ॥०३-१९४-१८॥
athāpaśyata govindo dānavau vīryavattarau। dṛṣṭvā tāvabravīddevaḥ svāgataṃ vāṃ mahābalau ॥ dadāni vāṃ varaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ prītirhi mama jāyate ॥03-194-18॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda (Krishna); दानवौ (dānavau) - the two Dānavas; वीर्यवत्तरौ (vīryavattarau) - most powerful; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तौ (tau) - them (two); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; स्वागतम् (svāgatam) - welcome; वाम् (vām) - to you two; महाबलौ (mahābalau) - mighty ones; ददानि (dadāni) - I will grant; वाम् (vām) - to you two; वरम् (varam) - a boon; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - supreme; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; जायते (jāyate) - arises;]
(Then Govinda saw the two Dānavas, most powerful. Having seen them, the god said: "Welcome to you two, mighty ones. I will grant you two the supreme boon, for indeed my affection arises." (03-194-18))
Then Govinda beheld the two exceedingly powerful Dānavas. Seeing them, the god said: "Welcome, mighty ones! I shall grant you both a supreme boon, for indeed affection arises within me." (03-194-18)
तौ प्रहस्य हृषीकेशं महावीर्यौ महासुरौ। प्रत्यब्रूतां महाराज सहितौ मधुसूदनम् ॥०३-१९४-१९॥
tau prahasya hṛṣīkeśaṃ mahāvīryau mahāsurau। pratyabrūtāṃ mahārāja sahitau madhusūdanam॥03-194-19॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed; हृषीकेशं (hṛṣīkeśam) - Hṛṣīkeśa; महावीर्यौ (mahāvīryau) - of great might (dual); महासुरौ (mahāsurau) - great Asuras (dual); प्रत्यब्रूतां (pratyabrūtāṃ) - replied (dual); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; मधुसूदनम् (madhusūdanam) - to Madhusūdana;]
(Those two great-mighty great-Asuras, having laughed, together replied to Hṛṣīkeśa, O great king, to Madhusūdana.)

आवां वरय देव त्वं वरदौ स्वः सुरोत्तम। दातारौ स्वो वरं तुभ्यं तद्ब्रवीह्यविचारयन् ॥०३-१९४-२०॥
āvāṃ varaya deva tvaṃ varadau svaḥ surottama। dātārau svo varaṃ tubhyaṃ tadbravīhyavicārayan ॥03-194-20॥
[आवां (āvāṃ) - we both; (dual form: the two of us); वरय (varaya) - choose; देव (deva) - O god; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वरदौ (varadau) - bestowers of boons; (dual nominative); स्वः (svaḥ) - our; (genitive dual); सुरोत्तम (surottama) - O best of gods; (vocative); दातारौ (dātārau) - givers; (dual nominative); स्वो (svo) - our; (genitive dual); वरं (varaṃ) - boon; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; (dative singular); तत् (tad) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; say; अविचारयन् (avicārayan) - without hesitation;]
(We both choose, O god, you (as) bestowers of boons, O best of gods; as our (the two of us) givers, our boon to you, that speak without hesitation.)
O god, you, the best of gods, choose a boon from us two, the bestowers of boons; as our gift to you, speak out what boon you desire, without hesitation. (03-194-20)
भगवानुवाच॥

प्रतिगृह्णे वरं वीरावीप्सितश्च वरो मम। युवां हि वीर्यसम्पन्नौ न वामस्ति समः पुमान् ॥०३-१९४-२१॥
pratigṛhṇe varaṃ vīrāvīpsitaś ca varo mama। yuvāṃ hi vīryasampannau na vāmas ti samaḥ pumān ॥03-194-21॥
[प्रतिगृह्णे (pratigṛhṇe) - I accept; वरम् (varam) - boon; वीर (vīra) - hero; अवीप्सितः (avīpsitaḥ) - unwished; च (ca) - and; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; मम (mama) - of me; युवाम् (yuvām) - you two; हि (hi) - indeed; वीर्यसम्पन्नौ (vīryasampannau) - endowed with heroism; न (na) - not; वाम् (vām) - for you two; अस्ति (asti) - there is; समः (samaḥ) - equal; पुमान् (pumān) - man;]
(I accept the boon, O hero, and an unwished boon is also mine. You two indeed are endowed with heroism; for you two there is not an equal man.)
I accept the boon, O heroes, and even the boon that is not desired is mine. For you two are truly full of heroic strength; there is no man equal to you two. (03-194-21)
वध्यत्वमुपगच्छेतां मम सत्यपराक्रमौ। एतदिच्छाम्यहं कामं प्राप्तुं लोकहिताय वै ॥०३-१९४-२२॥
vadhyatvam-upagacchetāṁ mama satyaparākramau। etad-icchāmyahaṁ kāmaṁ prāptuṁ lokahitāya vai ॥03-194-22॥
[वध्यत्वम् (vadhyatvam) - state of being liable to be killed; उपगच्छेताम् (upagacchetāṁ) - may attain; मम (mama) - my; सत्यपराक्रमौ (satyaparākramau) - who are truly valiant (dual); एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; कामम् (kāmam) - indeed; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; लोकहिताय (lokahitāya) - for the welfare of the world; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(The state of being liable to be killed may be attained by my truly valiant (sons); this I wish indeed to obtain for the welfare of the world indeed.)
May my truly valiant sons become liable to be slain; this is what I desire, indeed, in order to secure the welfare of the world. (03-194-22)
मधुकैटभावूचतुः॥
madhu-kaiṭabha-āvūcatuḥ॥
[मधु (madhu) - Madhu (a proper noun); कैटभ (kaiṭabha) - Kaiṭabha (a proper noun); आवूचतुः (āvūcatuḥ) - they both said;]
(Madhu, Kaiṭabha, they both said.)
Madhu and Kaiṭabha both said.
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं नौ स्वैरेष्वपि कुतोऽन्यथा। सत्ये धर्मे च निरतौ विद्ध्यावां पुरुषोत्तम ॥०३-१९४-२३॥
anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ nau svaireṣvapi kuto'nyathā। satye dharme ca niratau viddhyāvāṃ puruṣottama ॥03-194-23॥
[अनृतं (anṛtam) - untruth; falsehood; न (na) - not; उक्तपूर्वं (uktapūrvam) - spoken before; previously uttered; नौ (nau) - by us; (dual pronoun); स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - in liberties; in free acts; अपि (api) - even; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; whence; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; differently; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; निरतौ (niratau) - devoted; engaged; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; आवाम् (āvām) - both of us; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men;]
(Untruth not spoken before by us, even in liberties, how otherwise? In truth and righteousness devoted, know both of us, O best of men.)
O best of men, know that both of us have never spoken untruth before—not even in moments of freedom; we are devoted to truth and righteousness. (03-194-23)
बले रूपे च वीर्ये च शमे च न समोऽस्ति नौ। धर्मे तपसि दाने च शीलसत्त्वदमेषु च ॥०३-१९४-२४॥
bale rūpe ca vīrye ca śame ca na samo'sti nau। dharme tapasi dāne ca śīla-sattva-dameṣu ca ॥03-194-24॥
[बले (bale) - in strength; रूपे (rūpe) - in beauty; च (ca) - and; वीर्ये (vīrye) - in heroism; च (ca) - and; शमे (śame) - in tranquility; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; समः (samaḥ) - equal; अस्ति (asti) - there is; नौ (nau) - to us (dual); धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; दाने (dāne) - in charity; च (ca) - and; शीलसत्त्वदमेषु (śīla-sattva-dameṣu) - in conduct, strength, control; च (ca) - and;]
(In strength, in beauty, and in heroism, and in tranquility, there is not an equal to us; in righteousness, in austerity, in charity and in conduct, strength, and control, and.)
In strength, beauty, heroism, and tranquility, none are equal to us; nor in righteousness, austerity, charity, conduct, strength, or self-control. (03-194-24)
उपप्लवो महानस्मानुपावर्तत केशव। उक्तं प्रतिकुरुष्व त्वं कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥०३-१९४-२५॥
upaplavo mahānasmānupāvartata keśava। uktaṃ pratikuruṣva tvaṃ kālo hi duratikramaḥ॥03-194-25॥
[उपप्लवः (upaplavaḥ) (upaplavaḥ) - calamity; महान् (mahān) (mahān) - great; अस्मान् (asmān) (asmān) - us; अनुपावर्तत (anupāvartata) (anupāvartata) - has come upon; केशव (keśava) (keśava) - Keśava; उक्तम् (uktam) (uktam) - what was said; प्रतिकुरुष्व (pratikuruṣva) (pratikuruṣva) - do in return; त्वम् (tvam) (tvam) - you; कालः (kālaḥ) (kālaḥ) - time; हि (hi) (hi) - indeed; दुरतिक्रमः (duratikramaḥ) (duratikramaḥ) - difficult to overstep;]
(A great calamity has come upon us, Keśava. What was said, do you fulfill; time indeed is difficult to overstep.)

आवामिच्छावहे देव कृतमेकं त्वया विभो। अनावृतेऽस्मिन्नाकाशे वधं सुरवरोत्तम ॥०३-१९४-२६॥
āvām icchāvahe deva kṛtam ekaṃ tvayā vibho। anāvṛte ’smin ākāśe vadhaṃ suravarottama॥03-194-26॥

(We two desire to bear, O god, an act—one—by you, O mighty one; in this uncovered sky, slaying, O best among chief gods.)
O god, we two wish to carry out a deed—by you, O mighty one—namely, to slay (someone) in this open sky, O best among the chief gods. (03-194-26)
पुत्रत्वमभिगच्छाव तव चैव सुलोचन। वर एष वृतो देव तद्विद्धि सुरसत्तम ॥०३-१९४-२७॥
putratvam abhigacchāva tava caiva sulocana। vara eṣa vṛto deva tad viddhi surasattama ॥03-194-27॥
[पुत्रत्वम् (putratvam) - sonhood; the state of being a son; अभिगच्छाव (abhigacchāva) - let us attain; (first person dual, optative, from abhigam); तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; सुलोचन (sulocana) - O beautiful-eyed one; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; selected; देव (deva) - O god; तत् (tad) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know (imperative, 2nd person singular); सुरसत्तम (surasattama) - O best of the gods;]
(Let us attain sonhood of you indeed, O beautiful-eyed one. This boon is chosen, O god; know that, O best of the gods.)
O beautiful-eyed one, let us indeed become your sons. This boon is chosen, O god; know that, O best of the gods. (03-194-27)

बाढमेवं करिष्यामि सर्वमेतद्भविष्यति। मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥
bāḍham evaṁ kariṣyāmi sarvam etad bhaviṣyati. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca॥
[बाढम् (bāḍham) - truly; certainly; एवम् (evaṁ) - thus; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etad) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen; मार्कण्डेय (mārkaṇḍeya) - Mārkaṇḍeya; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Truly thus I will do; all this will happen. Mārkaṇḍeya said.)
"Certainly, I will do thus; all this will come to pass." Mārkaṇḍeya said.
विचिन्त्य त्वथ गोविन्दो नापश्यद्यदनावृतम्। अवकाशं पृथिव्यां वा दिवि वा मधुसूदनः ॥०३-१९४-२९॥
vicintya tv atha govindo nāpaśyad yad anāvṛtam. avakāśaṃ pṛthivyāṃ vā divi vā madhusūdanaḥ ॥03-194-29॥
[विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - having thought over; त्व (tv) - then; अथ (atha) - and; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; यत् (yat) - which; अनावृतम् (anāvṛtam) - uncovered; अवकाशम् (avakāśam) - space; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; वा (vā) - or; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; वा (vā) - or; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana;]
(Having thought over then and, Govinda did not see which [was] uncovered space, on the earth or in heaven, Madhusūdana.)
After reflecting, Govinda (Madhusūdana) did not see any open space, either on earth or in the heavens. (03-194-29)
स्वकावनावृतावूरू दृष्ट्वा देववरस्तदा। मधुकैटभयो राजञ्शिरसी मधुसूदनः ॥ चक्रेण शितधारेण न्यकृन्तत महायशाः ॥०३-१९४-३०॥
svakāvanāvṛtāvūrū dṛṣṭvā devavarastadā। madhukaiṭabhayo rājañśirasī madhusūdanaḥ ॥ cakreṇa śitadhāreṇa nyakr̥ntata mahāyaśāḥ ॥03-194-30॥
[स्वकावनावृतौ ऊरू (svakāvanāvṛtau ūrū) - the thighs (ūrū) covered (āvṛtau) by their own skin (svakā); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; देववरः (devavaraḥ) - the best among the gods; तदा (tadā) - then; मधुकैटभयोः (madhukaiṭabhayoḥ) - of Madhu and Kaiṭabha (the two asuras); राजन् (rājan) - O king; शिरसी (śirasī) - at the heads; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - the slayer of Madhu (Viṣṇu); चक्रेण (cakreṇa) - with the discus; शितधारेण (śitadhāreṇa) - with the sharp-edged; न्यकृन्तत (nyakr̥ntata) - he cut off; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - the greatly renowned one;]
(Having seen the thighs, covered by their own skin, the best among gods then, O king, at the heads of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, Madhusūdana with the sharp-edged discus cut off, the greatly renowned one.)
O king, then the greatly renowned Madhusūdana, seeing the thighs of Madhu and Kaiṭabha covered by their own skin, cut off their heads with his sharp-edged discus. (03-194-30)
