इक्ष्वाकौ संस्थिते राजञ्शशादः पृथिवीमिमाम्। प्राप्तः परमधर्मात्मा सोऽयोध्यायां नृपोऽभवत् ॥०३-१९३-१॥
ikṣvākau saṁsthite rājañśaśādaḥ pṛthivīmimām। prāptaḥ paramadharmātmā so' yodhyāyāṁ nṛpo'bhavat॥03-193-1॥
[इक्ष्वाकौ (ikṣvākau) - when Ikṣvāku (the king Ikṣvāku) had departed; संस्थिते (saṁsthite) - having departed; (when he was no more;) राजन् (rājan) - O King; शशादः (śaśādaḥ) - Śaśāda (proper name of the king); पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; परमधर्मात्मा (paramadharmātmā) - supremely righteous-souled; सः (saḥ) - he; अयोध्यायाम् (ayodhyāyām) - in Ayodhyā; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(When Ikṣvāku had departed, O King, Śaśāda obtained this earth; that supremely righteous-souled (one), he, became the king in Ayodhyā.)
After Ikṣvāku had passed away, O King, Śaśāda, a supremely righteous soul, obtained the earth and became king in Ayodhyā. (03-193-1)
शशादस्य तु दायादः ककुत्स्थो नाम वीर्यवान्। अनेनाश्चापि काकुत्स्थः पृथुश्चानेनसः सुतः ॥०३-१९३-२॥
śaśādasya tu dāyādaḥ kakutstho nāma vīryavān। anenāścāpi kākutsthaḥ pṛthuścānenasaḥ sutaḥ ॥03-193-2॥
[शशादस्य (śaśādasya) - of Śaśāda; तु (tu) - but; दायादः (dāyādaḥ) - heir; ककुत्स्थः (kakutsthaḥ) - Kakutstha; नाम (nāma) - by name; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; अनेन (anena) - by him; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; काकुत्स्थः (kākutsthaḥ) - Kakutstha; पृथुः (pṛthuḥ) - Pṛthu; च (ca) - and; अनेनसः (anenasah) - of Anenas; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
(Of Śaśāda but the heir Kakutstha by name, powerful; by him also Kakutstha, Pṛthu and of Anenas the son.)
But the heir of Śaśāda was Kakutstha, a powerful man by name; and by him, Kakutstha and Pṛthu were the sons of Anenas. (03-193-2)
विष्वगश्वः पृथोः पुत्रस्तस्मादार्द्रस्तु जज्ञिवान्। आर्द्रस्य युवनाश्वस्तु श्रावस्तस्तस्य चात्मजः ॥०३-१९३-३॥
viṣvagaśvaḥ pṛthoḥ putras tasmād ārdras tu jajñivān। ārdrasya yuvanāśvas tu śrāvastas tasya cātmajaḥ॥03-193-3॥

Viṣvagaśva was the son of Pṛthu; from him was born Ārdra. From Ārdra (was born) Yuvanāśva; Śrāvasta was his son. (03-193-3)
जज्ञे श्रावस्तको राजा श्रावस्ती येन निर्मिता। श्रावस्तस्य तु दायादो बृहदश्वो महाबलः ॥ बृहदश्वसुतश्चापि कुवलाश्व इति स्मृतः ॥०३-१९३-४॥
jajñe śrāvastako rājā śrāvastī yena nirmitā। śrāvastasya tu dāyādo bṛhadaśvo mahābalaḥ॥ bṛhadaśvasutaścāpi kuvalāśva iti smṛtaḥ॥03-193-4॥
[जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; श्रावस्तकः (śrāvastakaḥ) - Śrāvastaka (name); राजा (rājā) - king; श्रावस्ती (śrāvastī) - Śrāvastī (city); येन (yena) - by whom; निर्मिता (nirmitā) - was built; श्रावस्तस्य (śrāvastasya) - of Śrāvastaka; तु (tu) - but; दायादः (dāyādaḥ) - descendant; बृहदश्वः (bṛhadaśvaḥ) - Bṛhadaśva (name); महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - very strong; बृहदश्वसुतः (bṛhadaśva-sutaḥ) - son of Bṛhadaśva; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कुवलाश्वः (kuvalāśvaḥ) - Kuvalāśva (name); इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered;]
(Śrāvastaka, the king, was born—Śrāvastī was built by whom. Of Śrāvastaka, but, the descendant was Bṛhadaśva, very strong. The son of Bṛhadaśva also is Kuvalāśva, thus is remembered.)
The king Śrāvastaka was born, who built the city Śrāvastī. The powerful Bṛhadaśva was the descendant of Śrāvastaka, and Bṛhadaśva’s son was Kuvalāśva, as he is known. (03-193-4)
कुवलाश्वस्य पुत्राणां सहस्राण्येकविंशतिः। सर्वे विद्यासु निष्णाता बलवन्तो दुरासदाः ॥०३-१९३-५॥
kuvalāśvasya putrāṇāṃ sahasrāṇyekaviṃśatiḥ. sarve vidyāsu niṣṇātā balavanto durāsadāḥ ॥03-193-5॥
[कुवलाश्वस्य (kuvalāśvasya) - of Kuvalāśva;’ पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of the sons;’ सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands;’ एकविंशतिः (ekaviṃśatiḥ) - twenty-one;’ सर्वे (sarve) - all;’ विद्यासु (vidyāsu) - in knowledges;’ निष्णाता (niṣṇātā) - proficient;’ बलवन्तः (balavantaḥ) - strong;’ दुरासदाः (durāsadāḥ) - difficult to approach;’;]
(Of Kuvalashva’s sons, thousands, twenty-one. All in knowledges proficient, strong, difficult to approach.)
Kuvalashva had twenty-one thousand sons; all were proficient in various branches of knowledge, strong, and difficult to overcome. (03-193-5)
कुवलाश्वस्तु पितृतो गुणैरभ्यधिकोऽभवत्। समये तं ततो राज्ये बृहदश्वोऽभ्यषेचयत् ॥ कुवलाश्वं महाराज शूरमुत्तमधार्मिकम् ॥०३-१९३-६॥
kuvalāśvastu pitṛto guṇairabhyadhiko'bhavat। samaye taṃ tato rājye bṛhadaśvo'bhyṣe cayat॥ kuvalāśvaṃ mahārāja śūramuttamadhārmikam॥03-193-6॥
[कुवलाश्वः (kuvalāśvaḥ) - Kuvalāśva; तु (tu) - but; पितृतः (pitṛtaḥ) - than his father; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - surpassing; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; समये (samaye) - at the right time; तम् (tam) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; बृहदश्वः (bṛhadaśvaḥ) - Bṛhadaśva; अभ्यषेचयत् (abhyṣecayat) - anointed (installed); कुवलाश्वम् (kuvalāśvam) - Kuvalāśva; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; शूरम् (śūram) - hero; उत्तमधार्मिकम् (uttamadhārmikam) - best among the righteous; ॥०३-१९३-६॥ (03-193-6) -;]
(Kuvalāśva but than his father by virtues surpassing became. At the right time him then in the kingdom Bṛhadaśva anointed (installed). Kuvalāśva, O great king, hero, best among the righteous. (03-193-6))
But Kuvalāśva became superior to his father in virtues. Then, at the proper time, Bṛhadaśva installed him in the kingdom. Kuvalāśva, O great king, was a hero and the best among the righteous. (03-193-6)
पुत्रसङ्क्रामितश्रीस्तु बृहदश्वो महीपतिः। जगाम तपसे धीमांस्तपोवनममित्रहा ॥०३-१९३-७॥
putrasaṅkrāmitaśrīstu bṛhadaśvo mahīpatiḥ। jagāma tapase dhīmāṃstapovanam amitrahā ॥03-193-7॥
[पुत्रसङ्क्रामितश्रीः (putrasaṅkrāmitaśrīḥ) - one whose fortune/glory has been transferred to his son; तु (tu) - but; बृहदश्वः (bṛhadaśvaḥ) - Bṛhadaśva; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; जगाम (jagāma) - went; तपसे (tapase) - for austerities; for penance; धीमाँ (dhīmān) - wise; तपोवनम् (tapovanam) - to the hermitage; अमित्रहाः (amitrahā) - destroyer of enemies;]
(But Bṛhadaśva the king, whose fortune had been transferred to his son, wise, went for austerities to the hermitage, destroyer of enemies.)
But the wise king Bṛhadaśva, having transferred his fortune to his son, the destroyer of enemies, went to the hermitage for penance. (03-193-7)
अथ शुश्राव राजर्षिं तमुत्तङ्को युधिष्ठिर। वनं सम्प्रस्थितं राजन्बृहदश्वं द्विजोत्तमः ॥०३-१९३-८॥
atha śuśrāva rājarṣiṃ tam uttañko yudhiṣṭhira. vanaṃ samprasthitaṃ rājan bṛhadaśvaṃ dvijottamaḥ ॥03-193-8॥
[अथ (atha) - then; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; राजर्षिं (rājarṣiṃ) - royal sage; तम् (tam) - him; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; वनम् (vanam) - forest; सम्प्रस्थितम् (samprasthitam) - departed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बृहदश्वम् (bṛhadaśvam) - Bṛhadaśva; द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - best among twice-born;]
(Then Uttaṅka heard that royal sage Yudhiṣṭhira, O king, Bṛhadaśva, best among twice-born, had departed to the forest.)
Then Uttaṅka heard that royal sage Yudhiṣṭhira, O king, Bṛhadaśva, the foremost among the twice-born, had set out for the forest. (03-193-8)
तमुत्तङ्को महातेजाः सर्वास्त्रविदुषां वरम्। न्यवारयदमेयात्मा समासाद्य नरोत्तमम् ॥०३-१९३-९॥
tam-uttaṅko mahātejāḥ sarvāstraviduṣāṃ varam। nyavārayad ameyātmā samāsādya narottamam॥03-193-9॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्तङ्कः (uttaṅkaḥ) - Uttaṅka; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; सर्वास्त्रविदुषां (sarvāstraviduṣām) - of all knowers of weapons; वरम् (varam) - the foremost; न्यवारयत् (nyavārayat) - blocked; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable self; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नरोत्तमम् (narottamam) - the best among men;]
(Him Uttaṅka, of great brilliance, the foremost of all knowers of weapons, blocked, of immeasurable self, having approached the best among men.)
Uttaṅka, possessed of great brilliance and immeasurable spirit, approached and blocked him—the foremost of all weapon experts and the best among men. (03-193-9)

भवता रक्षणं कार्यं तत्तावत्कर्तुमर्हसि। निरुद्विग्ना वयं राजंस्त्वत्प्रसादाद्वसेमहि ॥०३-१९३-१०॥
bhavatā rakṣaṇaṃ kāryaṃ tattāvat kartum arhasi. nirudvignā vayaṃ rājan tvatprasādād vasemahi ॥03-193-10॥
[भवता (bhavatā) - by you; रक्षणम् (rakṣaṇam) - protection; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; तत्तावत् (tattāvat) - just that; for now; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; निरुद्विग्नाः (nirudvignāḥ) - undisturbed; without anxiety; वयम् (vayam) - we; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वत्-प्रसादात् (tvat-prasādāt) - by your favor; वसेमहि (vasemahi) - we may dwell;]
(By you, protection should be done, just that for now you ought to do. Undisturbed we, O king, by your favor, may dwell.)
You ought to provide our protection yourself, at least for now. O king, let us live without anxiety by your favor. (03-193-10)
त्वया हि पृथिवी राजन्रक्ष्यमाणा महात्मना। भविष्यति निरुद्विग्ना नारण्यं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-१९३-११॥
tvayā hi pṛthivī rājan rakṣyamāṇā mahātmanā। bhaviṣyati nirudvignā nāraṇyaṃ gantum arhasi ॥03-193-11॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रक्ष्यमाणा (rakṣyamāṇā) - being protected; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; निरुद्विग्ना (nirudvignā) - free from anxiety; न (na) - not; अरण्यं (araṇyaṃ) - to the forest; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(By you indeed, O king, the earth being protected by the great-souled will be free from anxiety; you ought not to go to the forest.)
O king, since you, a noble soul, are protecting the earth, she will be free from anxiety; you should not go to the forest. (03-193-11)
पालने हि महान्धर्मः प्रजानामिह दृश्यते। न तथा दृश्यतेऽरण्ये मा ते भूद्बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥०३-१९३-१२॥
pālani hi mahān dharmaḥ prajānām iha dṛśyate। na tathā dṛśyate'raṇye mā te bhūd buddhir īdṛśī ॥03-193-12॥
[पालने (pālani) - in protection; हि (hi) - indeed; महान् (mahān) - great; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of subjects; इह (iha) - here; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - your; भूत् (bhūt) - be; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - thought; ईदृशी (īdṛśī) - such;]
(In protection indeed great duty of subjects here is seen. Not thus is seen in the forest. Do not your thought be such.)
Indeed, the great duty of caring for the subjects is observed here; it is not so seen in the forest. Let your mind not be of such a kind. (03-193-12)
ईदृशो न हि राजेन्द्र धर्मः क्वचन दृश्यते। प्रजानां पालने यो वै पुरा राजर्षिभिः कृतः ॥ रक्षितव्याः प्रजा राज्ञा तास्त्वं रक्षितुमर्हसि ॥०३-१९३-१३॥
īdṛśo na hi rājendra dharmaḥ kvacana dṛśyate. prajānāṃ pālane yo vai purā rājarṣibhiḥ kṛtaḥ ॥ rakṣitavyāḥ prajā rājñā tās tvaṃ rakṣitum arhasi ॥03-193-13॥
[ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) - such; as this; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; क्वचन (kvacana) - anywhere; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the subjects; पालने (pālane) - in protection; यः (yaḥ) - which; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; राजर्षिभिः (rājarṣibhiḥ) - by royal sages; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was performed; रक्षितव्याः (rakṣitavyāḥ) - to be protected; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; ताः (tāḥ) - those; त्वम् (tvam) - you; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; ०३-१९३-१३ (03-193-13) - (03-193-13);]
(Such indeed, O best of kings, duty is not seen anywhere, which in protection of the subjects was indeed formerly performed by royal sages. Subjects are to be protected by the king; those you ought to protect.)
O best of kings, nowhere is such a duty seen as was formerly performed by royal sages in protecting their subjects. The subjects are to be protected by the king; you ought to protect them. (03-193-13)
निरुद्विग्नस्तपश्चर्तुं न हि शक्नोमि पार्थिव। ममाश्रमसमीपे वै समेषु मरुधन्वसु ॥०३-१९३-१४॥
nirudvignas tapaś cartuṃ na hi śaknomi pārthiva। mamāśramasamīpe vai sameṣu marudhanvasu॥03-193-14॥
[निरुद्विग्नः (nirudvignaḥ) - undisturbed; calm; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; चर्तुं (cartuṃ) - to practice; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; मम (mama) - my; आश्रमसमीपे (āśrama-samīpe) - near (the) hermitage; वै (vai) - indeed; समेषु (sameṣu) - among plains; मरुधन्वसु (marudhanvasu) - in deserts;]
(Undisturbed austerity to practice not indeed I am able, O king; near my hermitage indeed among the plains in deserts.)
O king, I am indeed not able to practice austerity peacefully near my hermitage amidst these plains and deserts. (03-193-14)
समुद्रो वालुकापूर्ण उज्जानक इति स्मृतः। बहुयोजनविस्तीर्णो बहुयोजनमायतः ॥०३-१९३-१५॥
samudro vālukāpūrṇa ujjānaka iti smṛtaḥ। bahuyojanavistīrṇo bahuyojanamāyataḥ॥03-193-15॥
[समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - ocean; वालुकापूर्ण (vālukāpūrṇa) - filled with sand; उज्जानक (ujjānaka) - dangerous; (making souls depart) इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is called; बहुयोजनविस्तीर्णः (bahuyojanavistīrṇaḥ) - extending many yojanas in width; बहुयोजनमायतः (bahuyojanamāyataḥ) - stretching many yojanas in length;]
(The ocean, filled with sand, dangerous, thus is called. Extending many yojanas in width, stretching many yojanas in length.)
The ocean, filled with sand and dangerous, is thus called. It is many yojanas wide and many yojanas long. (03-193-15)
तत्र रौद्रो दानवेन्द्रो महावीर्यपराक्रमः। मधुकैटभयोः पुत्रो धुन्धुर्नाम सुदारुणः ॥०३-१९३-१६॥
tatra raudro dānavendro mahā-vīrya-parākramaḥ। madhukaiṭabhayoḥ putro dhundhur nāma sudāruṇaḥ॥03-193-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; रौद्रः (raudraḥ) - terrible; दानवेन्द्रः (dānavendraḥ) - the lord of demons; महावीर्यपराक्रमः (mahā-vīrya-parākramaḥ) - of great strength and valor; मधुकैटभयोः (madhukaiṭabhayoḥ) - of Madhu and Kaiṭabha; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; धुन्धुः (dhundhuḥ) - Dhundhu; नाम (nāma) - by name; सुदारुणः (sudāruṇaḥ) - very fierce;]
(There, terrible, the lord of demons of great strength and valor, the son of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, Dhundhu by name, very fierce.)
There was Dhundhu, a very fierce lord of demons, of great strength and valor, the son of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, by name Dhundhu. (03-193-16)
अन्तर्भूमिगतो राजन्वसत्यमितविक्रमः। तं निहत्य महाराज वनं त्वं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-१९३-१७॥
antarbhūmigato rājan vasaty amitavikramaḥ। taṃ nihatya mahārāja vanaṃ tvaṃ gantum arhasi॥03-193-17॥
[अन्तर्भूमिगतः (antarbhūmigataḥ) - having gone into the interior of the earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वसति (vasati) - dwells; अमितविक्रमः (amitavikramaḥ) - of immeasurable valor; तम् (tam) - him; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; वनम् (vanam) - forest; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy;]
(Having gone into the interior of the earth, O king, dwells (one) of immeasurable valor. Having slain him, O great king, to the forest you are worthy to go.)
O king, one of immeasurable valor dwells in the interior of the earth. Having slain him, O great king, you are worthy to go to the forest. (03-193-17)
शेते लोकविनाशाय तप आस्थाय दारुणम्। त्रिदशानां विनाशाय लोकानां चापि पार्थिव ॥०३-१९३-१८॥
śete lokavināśāya tapa āsthāya dāruṇam। tridaśānāṃ vināśāya lokānāṃ cāpi pārthiva॥03-193-18॥
[शेते (śete) - he lies (down); लोकविनाशाय (lokavināśāya) - for the destruction of the worlds; तप (tapa) - austerity; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having undertaken; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - severe; त्रिदशानां (tridaśānāṃ) - of the gods; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for the destruction; लोकानां (lokānāṃ) - of the worlds; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(He lies (down) for the destruction of the worlds, having undertaken severe austerity, for the destruction of the gods and also of the worlds, O king.)
O king, he lies in severe austerity for the destruction of the gods and the worlds. (03-193-18)
अवध्यो देवतानां स दैत्यानामथ रक्षसाम्। नागानामथ यक्षाणां गन्धर्वाणां च सर्वशः ॥ अवाप्य स वरं राजन्सर्वलोकपितामहात् ॥०३-१९३-१९॥
avadhyo devatānāṃ sa daityānām atha rakṣasām। nāgānām atha yakṣāṇāṃ gandharvāṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ॥ avāpya sa varaṃ rājan sarvaloka-pitāmahāt॥03-193-19॥
[अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - not to be slain; invulnerable; देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the gods; सः (saḥ) - he; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the daityas (demons, sons of Diti); अथ (atha) - and; also; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the rākṣasas (demons); नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of the nāgas (serpent-beings); अथ (atha) - and; also; यक्षाणाम् (yakṣāṇām) - of the yakṣas (nature-spirits); गन्धर्वाणाम् (gandharvāṇām) - of the gandharvas (celestial musicians); च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; for all; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; सः (saḥ) - he; वरम् (varam) - boon; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वलोकपितामहात् (sarvaloka-pitāmahāt) - from the grandsire of all worlds (Brahmā);]
(He, invulnerable to the gods, to the daityas, and to the rākṣasas; to the nāgas, and to the yakṣas, to the gandharvas entirely; having obtained this boon, O king, from the grandsire of all worlds.)
Having thus obtained the boon from the grandsire of all worlds, O king, he became invulnerable to the gods, daityas, rākṣasas, nāgas, yakṣas, and all gandharvas. (03-193-19)
तं विनाशय भद्रं ते मा ते बुद्धिरतोऽन्यथा। प्राप्स्यसे महतीं कीर्तिं शाश्वतीमव्ययां ध्रुवाम् ॥०३-१९३-२०॥
taṃ vināśaya bhadraṃ te mā te buddhir ato'nyathā. prāpsyase mahatīṃ kīrtiṃ śāśvatīm avyayāṃ dhruvām ॥03-193-20॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; विनाशय (vināśaya) - destroy; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; ते (te) - to you; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; अतः (ataḥ) - from this; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - you will obtain; महतीं (mahatīm) - great; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; अव्ययाम् (avyayām) - imperishable; ध्रुवाम् (dhruvām) - fixed;]
(Him destroy; welfare to you; do not your mind from this otherwise. You will obtain great fame—eternal, imperishable, fixed.)
Destroy him—for your welfare; do not let your mind act otherwise. You will obtain great and unchanging, eternal fame. (03-193-20)
क्रूरस्य स्वपतस्तस्य वालुकान्तर्हितस्य वै। संवत्सरस्य पर्यन्ते निःश्वासः सम्प्रवर्तते ॥ यदा तदा भूश्चलति सशैलवनकानना ॥०३-१९३-२१॥
krūrasya svapatas tasya vālukāntarhitasya vai। saṃvatsarasya paryante niḥśvāsaḥ sampravartate॥ yadā tadā bhūś calati saśailavanakānanā॥03-193-21॥
[क्रूरस्य (krūrasya) - of the cruel one; स्वपत: (svapataḥ) - of the sleeping (one); तस्य (tasya) - of him; वालुकान्तर्हितस्य (vālukāntarhitasya) - buried within sand; वै (vai) - indeed; संवत्सरस्य (saṃvatsarasya) - of the year; पर्यन्ते (paryante) - at the end; निःश्वासः (niḥśvāsaḥ) - breath; सम्प्रवर्तते (sampravartate) - arises; यदा (yadā) - when; तदा (tadā) - then; भूः (bhūḥ) - the earth; चलति (calati) - moves; सशैलवनकानना (saśailavanakānanā) - with mountains, forests, and groves;]
(Of the cruel one, of the sleeping one, of him, indeed buried within sand, at the end of the year, breath arises; when (that happens), then the earth, with mountains, forests, and groves, moves.)
The breath of that cruel, sleeping one, buried within sand, arises at the end of the year; whenever that happens, the earth, along with its mountains, forests, and groves, trembles. (03-193-21)
तस्य निःश्वासवातेन रज उद्धूयते महत्। आदित्यपथमावृत्य सप्ताहं भूमिकम्पनम् ॥ सविस्फुलिङ्गं सज्वालं सधूमं ह्यतिदारुणम् ॥०३-१९३-२२॥
tasya niḥśvāsavātena raja uddhūyate mahat। ādityapathamāvṛtya saptāhaṃ bhūmikampanam॥ savisphuliṅgaṃ sajvālaṃ sadhūmaṃ hyatidāruṇam॥03-193-22॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; निःश्वासवातेन (niḥśvāsavātena) - by the wind of breath; रज (raja) - dust; उद्धूयते (uddhūyate) - is lifted; महत् (mahat) - great; आदित्यपथम् (ādityapatham) - the sun's path; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having covered; सप्ताहम् (saptāham) - for seven days; भूमि (bhūmi) - earth; कम्पनम् (kampanam) - trembling; सविस्फुलिङ्गम् (savisphuliṅgam) - with sparks; सज्वालम् (sajvālam) - with flames; सधूमम् (sadhūmam) - with smoke; हि (hi) - indeed; अतिदारुणम् (atidāruṇam) - very terrible;]
(His dust, by the wind of breath, is lifted great; having covered the sun's path, for seven days, earth trembling; with sparks, with flames, with smoke indeed very terrible.)
By his breath, a great cloud of dust is raised, covering the sun's path; for seven days the earth trembles, with sparks, with flames, with smoke, indeed very terrible. (3-193-22)
तेन राजन्न शक्नोमि तस्मिन्स्थातुं स्व आश्रमे। तं विनाशय राजेन्द्र लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥ लोकाः स्वस्था भवन्त्वद्य तस्मिन्विनिहतेऽसुरे ॥०३-१९३-२३॥
tena rājanna śaknomi tasmin-sthātuṃ sva āśrame। taṃ vināśaya rājendra lokānāṃ hita-kāmyayā॥ lokāḥ svasthā bhavant-adya tasmin-vinihate'sure॥ 03-193-23॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; by that; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to remain; to stay; स्व (sva) - own; one's own; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in hermitage; तं (taṃ) - him; that; विनाशय (vināśaya) - destroy; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; of all people; हितकाम्यया (hita-kāmyayā) - with the desire for their welfare; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; people; स्वस्था (svasthā) - at ease; well-established; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - may become; अद्य (adya) - today; now; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; विनिहते (vinihate) - having been slain; destroyed; असुरे (asure) - the demon; asura;]
(By him, O king, I am not able to stay in that own hermitage. Destroy him, O king of kings, with the desire for the welfare of the worlds. The worlds may become well-established today, that demon having been destroyed.)
Because of him, O king, I am unable to remain in my own hermitage. Destroy him, O king of kings, desiring the welfare of the worlds. May the worlds now be at peace, with that demon destroyed. (03-193-23)
त्वं हि तस्य विनाशाय पर्याप्त इति मे मतिः। तेजसा तव तेजश्च विष्णुराप्याययिष्यति ॥०३-१९३-२४॥
tvaṁ hi tasya vināśāya paryāpta iti me matiḥ। tejasā tava tejaś ca viṣṇur āpyāyayiṣyati ॥03-193-24॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; पर्याप्त (paryāpta) - sufficient; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (your) energy; तव (tava) - your; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; च (ca) - and; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; आप्याययिष्यति (āpyāyayiṣyati) - will cause to be invigorated;]
(You indeed for his destruction are sufficient, thus my opinion. By (your) energy, your energy also Viṣṇu will cause to be invigorated.)
In my opinion, you alone are indeed sufficient for his destruction. With your energy, Viṣṇu will also be invigorated. (03-193-24)
विष्णुना च वरो दत्तो मम पूर्वं ततो वधे। यस्तं महासुरं रौद्रं वधिष्यति महीपतिः ॥ तेजस्तं वैष्णवमिति प्रवेक्ष्यति दुरासदम् ॥०३-१९३-२५॥
viṣṇunā ca varo datto mama pūrvaṃ tato vadhe। yaḥ taṃ mahāsuraṃ raudraṃ vadhiṣyati mahīpatiḥ ॥ tejastam vaiṣṇavam iti pravekṣyati durāsadam ॥03-193-25॥
[विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; वरो (varo) - boon; दत्तो (datto) - was given; मम (mama) - to me; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - previously; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वधे (vadhe) - for the killing; यः (yaḥ) - who; तम् (tam) - that; महासुरम् (mahāsuram) - great asura; रौद्रम् (raudram) - fierce; वधिष्यति (vadhiṣyati) - will kill; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; तम् (tam) - that; वैष्णवम् (vaiṣṇavam) - of Viṣṇu; इति (iti) - thus; प्रवेक्ष्यति (pravekṣyati) - will enter; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - difficult to approach;]
(And by Viṣṇu, a boon was given to me previously; then for the killing, the one who will kill that fierce great asura, the king; that energy of Viṣṇu, thus, will enter (him), difficult to approach.)
Earlier, Viṣṇu granted me a boon that, for the slaying of the fierce great asura, the king who is to kill him will be endowed with Viṣṇu’s own invincible energy. (03-193-25)
तत्तेजस्त्वं समाधाय राजेन्द्र भुवि दुःसहम्। तं निषूदय संदुष्टं दैत्यं रौद्रपराक्रमम् ॥०३-१९३-२६॥
tattejas tvaṁ samādhāya rājendra bhuvi duḥsaham। taṁ niṣūdaya sanduṣṭaṁ daityaṁ raudraparākramam॥03-193-26॥
[तत्तेजस् (tattejas) - that power; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having assumed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; दुःसहम् (duḥsaham) - difficult to withstand; तं (taṁ) - him; निषूदय (niṣūdaya) - destroy; संदुष्टं (sanduhṣṭam) - malicious; दैत्यं (daityam) - the demon; रौद्रपराक्रमम् (raudraparākramam) - of fierce valor;]
(You, having assumed that power, O king, on earth difficult to withstand, destroy that malicious demon of fierce valor.)
O king, assume that power, and on earth—difficult to withstand—destroy that malicious demon of fierce might. (03-193-26)
न हि धुन्धुर्महातेजास्तेजसाल्पेन शक्यते। निर्दग्धुं पृथिवीपाल स हि वर्षशतैरपि ॥०३-१९३-२७॥
na hi dhundhur-mahātejas-tejasālpena śakyate। nirdaɡdhuṃ pṛthivīpāla sa hi varṣaśatair-api॥03-193-27॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; धुन्धुर् (dhundhur) - Dhundhu (proper noun, name of a demon); महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (with) energy; अल्पेन (alpena) - small; little; शक्यते (śakyate) - is able (can be accomplished); निर्दग्धुम् (nirdaɡdhuṃ) - to be burnt; destroyed by fire; पृथिवीपाल (pṛthivīpāla) - O protector of the earth; king; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; वर्षशतैः (varṣaśataiḥ) - by hundreds of years; अपि (api) - even;]
(Not indeed Dhundhu of great brilliance by little energy is able to be burnt, O protector of the earth; he indeed even by hundreds of years.)
O King, Dhundhu who is of great brilliance cannot be destroyed by little energy; indeed, even in hundreds of years, it is not possible. (03-193-27)
