धुन्धुर्नाम महातेजास्तयोः पुत्रो महाद्युतिः। स तपोऽतप्यत महन्महावीर्यपराक्रमः ॥०३-१९५-१॥
dhundhurnāma mahātejāstayoḥ putro mahādyutiḥ। sa tapo'tapyata mahanmahāvīryaparākramaḥ॥03-195-1॥
[धुन्धुः (dhundhuḥ) - Dhundhu; (proper noun); नाम (nāma) - named; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great brilliance; सः (saḥ) - he; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; अतप्यत (atapyata) - performed; महत् (mahat) - great; महावीर्यपराक्रमः (mahāvīryaparākramaḥ) - of great heroic power;]
(Dhundhu named, of great splendor, of those two the son, of great brilliance. He austerity performed, great, of great heroic power.)
Dhundhu, named and of great splendor, was the son of those two and was highly illustrious. He, possessing great heroic power, performed intense austerities. (03-195-1)
अतिष्ठदेकपादेन कृशो धमनिसन्ततः। तस्मै ब्रह्मा ददौ प्रीतो वरं वव्रे स च प्रभो ॥०३-१९५-२॥
atiṣṭhad-ekapādena kṛśo dhmanisantataḥ। tasmai brahmā dadau prīto varaṃ vavre sa ca prabho॥03-195-2॥

देवदानवयक्षाणां सर्पगन्धर्वरक्षसाम्। अवध्योऽहं भवेयं वै वर एष वृतो मया ॥०३-१९५-३॥

This boon has been chosen by me: may I indeed become not to be slain by the gods, demons, yakṣas, snakes, gandharvas, and rākṣasas. (03-195-3)
एवं भवतु गच्छेति तमुवाच पितामहः। स एवमुक्तस्तत्पादौ मूर्ध्ना स्पृश्य जगाम ह ॥०३-१९५-४॥
evaṁ bhavatu gaccheti tam uvāca pitāmahaḥ। sa evam uktas tat pādau mūrdhnā spṛśya jagāma ha ॥03-195-4॥

(Thus—let it be—go—thus—to him—said—(the) grandfather. He, thus having been addressed, his feet with (his) head having touched, indeed went.)
The grandfather said to him, "So be it, go." Having been thus addressed, he touched his (grandfather's) feet with his head and then departed. (03-195-4)
स तु धुन्धुर्वरं लब्ध्वा महावीर्यपराक्रमः। अनुस्मरन्पितृवधं ततो विष्णुमुपाद्रवत् ॥०३-१९५-५॥
sa tu dhundhur varaṃ labdhvā mahāvīryaparākramaḥ। anusmaran pitṛvadhaṃ tato viṣṇum upādravat ॥03-195-5॥

(He but Dhundhu, boon having obtained, of great might and valor, remembering his father's killing, then Viṣṇu approached.)
But Dhundhu, having obtained the boon, being of great might and valor, remembering the killing of his father, then approached Viṣṇu. (03-195-5)
स तु देवान्सगन्धर्वाञ्जित्वा धुन्धुरमर्षणः। बबाध सर्वानसकृद्देवान्विष्णुं च वै भृशम् ॥०३-१९५-६॥
sa tu devān sagandharvāñ jitvā dhundhur amarṣaṇaḥ। babādha sarvān asakṛd devān viṣṇuṃ ca vai bhṛśam ॥03-195-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; देवान् (devān) - the gods; सगन्धर्वान् (sa-gandharvān) - together with the Gandharvas; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; धुन्धुरम् (dhundhuram) - Dhundhu (proper noun); अर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - the unforgiving one; बबाध (babādha) - oppressed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; देवान् (devān) - the gods; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(He but the gods together with the Gandharvas having conquered, Dhundhu, the unforgiving one, oppressed all repeatedly, the gods and Viṣṇu indeed greatly.)
But he, Dhundhu the unforgiving, having conquered the gods along with the Gandharvas, repeatedly oppressed all—the gods and even Viṣṇu—greatly. (03-195-6)
समुद्रो वालुकापूर्ण उज्जानक इति स्मृतः। आगम्य च स दुष्टात्मा तं देशं भरतर्षभ ॥ बाधते स्म परं शक्त्या तमुत्तङ्काश्रमं प्रभो ॥०३-१९५-७॥
samudro vālukā-pūrṇa ujjānaka iti smṛtaḥ। āgamya ca sa duṣṭātmā taṃ deśaṃ bharatarṣabha॥ bādhate sma paraṃ śaktyā tam-uttaṅkāśramaṃ prabho॥03-195-7॥

(The ocean, filled with sand, named Ujjānaka, is thus remembered. Having come, that wicked-minded one, O bull among the Bharatas, oppressed that region; he oppressed, with excessive power, that Uttanka's hermitage, O lord.)

अन्तर्भूमिगतस्तत्र वालुकान्तर्हितस्तदा। मधुकैटभयोः पुत्रो धुन्धुर्भीमपराक्रमः ॥०३-१९५-८॥

शेते लोकविनाशाय तपोबलसमाश्रितः। उत्तङ्कस्याश्रमाभ्याशे निःश्वसन्पावकार्चिषः ॥०३-१९५-९॥
śete lokavināśāya tapobalasamāśritaḥ। uttaṅkasyāśramābhyāśe niḥśvasanpāvakārciṣaḥ॥03-195-9॥

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु सभृत्यबलवाहनः। कुवलाश्वो नरपतिरन्वितो बलशालिनाम् ॥०३-१९५-१०॥
etasminn eva kāle tu sabhṛtya-balavāhanaḥ। kuvalāśvo narapatir anvito balaśālinām॥03-195-10॥

(In this very time, but, with retainers, army, and vehicles, Kuvalāśva, the king, accompanied by the powerful (ones).)

सहस्रैरेकविंशत्या पुत्राणामरिमर्दनः। प्रायादुत्तङ्कसहितो धुन्धोस्तस्य निवेशनम् ॥०३-१९५-११॥
sahasrair ekaviṃśatyā putrāṇām arimardanaḥ। prāyād uttaṅka-sahito dhundhos tasya niveśanam॥03-195-11॥

tam āviśat tato viṣṇur bhagavāṁs tejasā prabhuḥ। uttaṅkasya niyogena lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā ॥03-195-12॥

तस्मिन्प्रयाते दुर्धर्षे दिवि शब्दो महानभूत्। एष श्रीमान्नृपसुतो धुन्धुमारो भविष्यति ॥०३-१९५-१३॥
tasmin prayāte durdharṣe divi śabdo mahān abhūt। eṣa śrīmān nṛpasuto dhundhumāro bhaviṣyati॥03-195-13॥

(In that (moment), having departed, the invincible, in the sky, a great sound arose. This illustrious king's son Dhundhumāra will be.)

दिव्यैश्च पुष्पैस्तं देवाः समन्तात्पर्यवाकिरन्। देवदुन्दुभयश्चैव नेदुः स्वयमुदीरिताः ॥०३-१९५-१४॥
divyaiś ca puṣpaiḥ taṁ devāḥ samantāt paryavākiran। devadundubhayaś caiva neduḥ svayam udīritāḥ ॥03-195-14॥

शीतश्च वायुः प्रववौ प्रयाणे तस्य धीमतः। विपांसुलां महीं कुर्वन्ववर्ष च सुरेश्वरः ॥०३-१९५-१५॥

(And cold wind blew at the departure of the wise one; the lord of the gods rained, making the earth devoid of dust.)

अन्तरिक्षे विमानानि देवतानां युधिष्ठिर। तत्रैव समदृश्यन्त धुन्धुर्यत्र महासुरः ॥०३-१९५-१६॥

(In the sky, flying chariots of the gods, O Yudhiṣṭhira. In that very place, Dhundhu, where the great asura, was seen together.)

कुवलाश्वस्य धुन्धोश्च युद्धकौतूहलान्विताः। देवगन्धर्वसहिताः समवैक्षन्महर्षयः ॥०३-१९५-१७॥
kuvalāśvasya dhundhoś ca yuddha-kautūhala-anvitāḥ। deva-gandharva-sahitāḥ samavaikṣan maharṣayaḥ॥03-195-17॥

The great sages, together with the gods and Gandharvas, watched with keen interest the battle between Kuvalāśva and Dhundhu. (03-195-17)
नारायणेन कौरव्य तेजसाप्यायितस्तदा। स गतो नृपतिः क्षिप्रं पुत्रैस्तैः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥०३-१९५-१८॥
nārāyaṇena kauravya tejasāpyāyitastadā। sa gato nṛpatiḥ kṣipraṃ putraistaiḥ sarvatodiśam ॥03-195-18॥
[नारायणेन (nārāyaṇena) - by Nārāyaṇa; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the energy; अप्यायितः (apyāyitaḥ) - having been invigorated; तदा (tadā) - then; स (sa) - he; गतः (gataḥ) - went; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - with sons; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; सर्वत (sarvata) - in all directions; उदिशम् (udiśam) - towards direction;]
(By Nārāyaṇa, O descendant of Kuru, by the energy having been invigorated, then he went, the king, quickly, with those sons, in all directions.)
Then, O descendant of Kuru, invigorated by Nārāyaṇa's energy, the king quickly set out with those sons in all directions. (03-195-18)
अर्णवं खानयामास कुवलाश्वो महीपतिः। कुवलाश्वस्य पुत्रैस्तु तस्मिन्वै वालुकार्णवे ॥०३-१९५-१९॥
arṇavaṃ khānayāmāsa kuvalāśvo mahīpatiḥ। kuvalāśvasya putraistu tasmin vai vālukārṇave ॥03-195-19॥
[अर्णवं (arṇavam) - ocean; खानयामास (khānayāmāsa) - dug; कुवलाश्वः (kuvalāśvaḥ) - Kuvalāśva; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; कुवलाश्वस्य (kuvalāśvasya) - of Kuvalāśva; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by the sons; तु (tu) - however; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वै (vai) - indeed; वालुका-अर्णवे (vālukā-arṇave) - in the sandy ocean;]
(The ocean was dug by Kuvalāśva the king. By the sons of Kuvalāśva indeed, in that sandy ocean.)
Kuvalāśva, the king, dug the ocean, and by the sons of Kuvalāśva, in that sandy ocean, (this occurred). (03-195-19)
सप्तभिर्दिवसैः खात्वा दृष्टो धुन्धुर्महाबलः। आसीद्घोरं वपुस्तस्य वालुकान्तर्हितं महत् ॥ दीप्यमानं यथा सूर्यस्तेजसा भरतर्षभ ॥०३-१९५-२०॥
saptabhir divasaiḥ khātvā dṛṣṭo dhundhur mahābalaḥ। āsīd ghoram vapus tasya vāluka-antar-hitaṃ mahat॥ dīpyamānaṃ yathā sūryas tejasā bharatarṣabha॥03-195-20॥
[सप्तभिः (saptabhiḥ) - with seven; दिवसैः (divasaiḥ) - days; खात्वा (khātvā) - having dug; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; धुन्धुः (dhundhuḥ) - Dhundhu; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; तस्य (tasya) - his; वालुकान्तर्हितं (vāluka-antar-hitam) - hidden within the sand; महत् (mahat) - great; दीप्यमानं (dīpyamānam) - shining; यथा (yathā) - as; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas;]
(With seven days having dug, Dhundhu of great strength was seen. Terrible was his form, great, hidden within the sand, shining as the sun with splendor, O bull of the Bharatas.)
After digging for seven days, the mighty Dhundhu was discovered. His enormous and terrible form was hidden within the sand, shining with brilliance like the sun, O best of the Bharatas. (03-195-20)

tato dhundhurmahārāja diśamāśritya paścimām। supto'bhūdrājaśārdūla kālānalasamadyutiḥ ॥03-195-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; धुन्धुः (dhundhuḥ) - Dhundhu (proper noun); महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; पश्चिमाम् (paścimām) - western; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) - asleep; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; कालानलसमद्युतिः (kālānalasamadyutiḥ) - with a radiance like the fire of destruction at the end of time;]
(Then Dhundhu, the great king, having resorted to the western direction, became asleep, O tiger among kings, with a radiance like the fire of destruction at the end of time.)
Then, O tiger among kings, Dhundhu the great king, having taken refuge in the west, slept there, shining with a brilliance like the fire of the final dissolution. (03-195-21)
कुवलाश्वस्य पुत्रैस्तु सर्वतः परिवारितः। अभिद्रुतः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्गदाभिर्मुसलैरपि ॥ पट्टिशैः परिघैः प्रासैः खड्गैश्च विमलैः शितैः ॥०३-१९५-२२॥
kuvalāśvasya putraistu sarvataḥ parivāritaḥ। abhidrutaḥ śaraisti kṣṇair gadābhir musalair api॥ paṭṭiśaiḥ parighaiḥ prāsaiḥ khaḍgaiś ca vimalaiḥ śitaiḥ॥03-195-22॥
[कुवलाश्वस्य (kuvalāśvasya) - of Kuvalāśva;’s पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; by the sons; तु (tu) - but; however; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; everywhere; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded; अभिद्रुतः (abhidrutaḥ) - attacked; assailed; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; तीक्ष्णैः (tīkṣṇaiḥ) - sharp; pointed; गदाभिः (gadābhiḥ) - by maces; मुसलैः (musalaiḥ) - by pestles; by clubs; अपि (api) - also; too; पट्टिशैः (paṭṭiśaiḥ) - by pikes; परिघैः (parighaiḥ) - by iron clubs; प्रासैः (prāsaiḥ) - by lances; खड्गैः (khaḍgaiḥ) - by swords; च (ca) - and; विमलैः (vimalaiḥ) - bright; shining; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; keen;]
(But surrounded from all sides by the sons of Kuvalāśva, attacked by sharp arrows, by maces, by pestles also, by pikes, by iron clubs, by lances, and by swords that are bright and sharp.)

स वध्यमानः सङ्क्रुद्धः समुत्तस्थौ महाबलः। क्रुद्धश्चाभक्षयत्तेषां शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥०३-१९५-२३॥
sa vadhyamānaḥ saṅkruddhaḥ samuttasthau mahābalaḥ। kruddhaś cābhakṣayattēṣāṁ śastrāṇi vividhāni ca॥03-195-23॥
[स (sa) (sa) - he; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) (saṅkruddhaḥ) - utterly enraged; समुत्तस्थौ (samuttasthau) (samuttasthau) - stood up; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) (kruddhaḥ) - angry; च (ca) (ca) - and; अभक्षयत् (abhakṣayat) (abhakṣayat) - devoured; तेषां (teṣām) (teṣām) - their; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) (śastrāṇi) - weapons; विविधानि (vividhāni) (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) (ca) - and;]
(He being struck, utterly enraged, stood up, the mighty. And angry, he devoured their weapons, various also.)
Though being wounded, the mighty and utterly enraged one rose up; and in anger, he also devoured their various weapons. (03-195-23)
आस्याद्वमन्पावकं स संवर्तकसमं तदा। तान्सर्वान्नृपतेः पुत्रानदहत्स्वेन तेजसा ॥०३-१९५-२४॥
āsyād vaman pāvakaṃ sa saṃvartaka-samaṃ tadā। tān sarvān nṛpateḥ putrān adahad svena tejasā ॥03-195-24॥
[आस्यात् (āsyāt) - from the mouth; वमन् (vaman) - vomiting; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; स (sa) - he; संवर्तक-समम् (saṃvartaka-samam) - equal to (the fire) of destruction; तदा (tadā) - then; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; स्वेन (svena) - by his own; तेजसा (tejasā) - splendor;]
(Vomiting fire from the mouth, he then (with a fire) equal to the fire of destruction, burned all the king's sons with his own splendor.)

मुखजेनाग्निना क्रुद्धो लोकानुद्वर्तयन्निव। क्षणेन राजशार्दूल पुरेव कपिलः प्रभुः ॥ सगरस्यात्मजान्क्रुद्धस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥०३-१९५-२५॥
mukhajenāgninā kruddho lokān udvartayan niva। kṣaṇena rājaśārdūla pura eva kapilaḥ prabhuḥ॥ sagarasya ātmajān kruddhas tad adbhutam iva abhavat॥03-195-25॥
[मुखजेन (mukhajena) - by one produced from the mouth; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; उद्वर्तयन् (udvartayan) - overturning; इव (iva) - as if; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O best of kings; पुरा (purā) - formerly; एव (eva) - just; कपिलः (kapilaḥ) - Kapila; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; आत्मजान् (ātmajān) - sons; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; तत् (tad) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonder; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(As if overturning the worlds with fire produced from his mouth in anger, in an instant—O tiger among kings—just as formerly Kapila the lord, being angry, that became a marvel, as if (regarding) the sons of Sagara.)
As if, in anger, with fire produced from his mouth, he overturned the worlds in a moment—O best of kings—just as before, Kapila, the lord, in his anger, caused that wondrous thing to happen to the sons of Sagara. (03-195-25)
तेषु क्रोधाग्निदग्धेषु तदा भरतसत्तम। तं प्रबुद्धं महात्मानं कुम्भकर्णमिवापरम् ॥ आससाद महातेजाः कुवलाश्वो महीपतिः ॥०३-१९५-२६॥
teṣu krodhāgnidagdheṣu tadā bharatasattama। taṃ prabuddhaṃ mahātmānaṃ kumbhakarṇam-iva-aparam ॥ āsasāda mahātejāḥ kuvalāśvo mahīpatiḥ ॥03-195-26॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - in them; क्रोधाग्निदग्धेषु (krodhāgni-dagdheṣu) - burnt by the fire of anger; तदा (tadā) - then; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best of the Bharatas; तं (tam) - him; प्रबुद्धं (prabuddham) - awakened; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled; कुम्भकर्णमिव (kumbhakarṇam-iva) - like Kumbhakarṇa; अपरम् (aparam) - another; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great energy; कुवलाश्वः (kuvalāśvaḥ) - Kuvalāśva; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(In them burnt by the fire of anger then, best of the Bharatas, him awakened, great-souled, like another Kumbhakarṇa, approached of great energy Kuvalāśva the king.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, among those consumed by the fire of anger, the king Kuvalāśva of great energy approached him, the awakened great-souled one like another Kumbhakarṇa. (03-195-26)
तस्य वारि महाराज सुस्राव बहु देहतः। तदापीयत तत्तेजो राजा वारिमयं नृप ॥ योगी योगेन वह्निं च शमयामास वारिणा ॥०३-१९५-२७॥
tasya vāri mahārāja susrāva bahu dehataḥ। tadāpīyata tattejo rājā vārimayaṃ nṛpa॥ yogī yogena vahniṃ ca śamayāmāsa vāriṇā॥03-195-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; वारि (vāri) - water; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सुस्राव (susrāva) - flowed; बहु (bahu) - much; देहतः (dehataḥ) - from the body; तदा (tadā) - then; अपीयत (apīyata) - was drunk; तत् (tat) - that; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; राजा (rājā) - king; वारिमयं (vārimayaṃ) - made of water; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; योगी (yogī) - the ascetic; योगेन (yogena) - through yoga; वह्निम् (vahnim) - fire; च (ca) - and; शमयामास (śamayāmāsa) - subdued; वारिणा (vāriṇā) - with water;]
(Of him, O great king, much water flowed from the body. Then that energy made of water, O king, was drunk by the king. The yogi subdued the fire by yoga and with water.)
O great king, much water flowed from his body. Then the king, whose energy was composed of water, drank it. The yogi subdued the fire through yoga and by means of water. (03-195-27)
ब्रह्मास्त्रेण तदा राजा दैत्यं क्रूरपराक्रमम्। ददाह भरतश्रेष्ठ सर्वलोकाभयाय वै ॥०३-१९५-२८॥
brahmāstreṇa tadā rājā daityaṃ krūraparākramaṃ। dadāha bharataśreṣṭha sarvalokabhayāya vai ॥03-195-28॥
[ब्रह्मास्त्रेण (brahmāstreṇa) - with the Brahmāstra; तदा (tadā) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; दैत्यं (daityaṃ) - the demon; क्रूरपराक्रमम् (krūraparākramaṃ) - of terrible prowess; ददाह (dadāha) - burnt; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of Bharatas; सर्वलोकाभयाय (sarvalokabhayāya) - for the safety of all worlds; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(With the Brahmāstra then the king, the demon of terrible prowess, burnt, O best of Bharatas, for the safety of all worlds indeed.)

सोऽस्त्रेण दग्ध्वा राजर्षिः कुवलाश्वो महासुरम्। सुरशत्रुममित्रघ्नस्त्रिलोकेश इवापरः ॥ धुन्धुमार इति ख्यातो नाम्ना समभवत्ततः ॥०३-१९५-२९॥
so'streṇa dagdhvā rājarṣiḥ kuvalāśvo mahāsuram। suraśatrumamitraghnastrilokeśa ivāparaḥ ॥ dhundhumāra iti khyāto nāmnā samabhavattataḥ ॥03-195-29॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - with the weapon; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burned; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; कुवलाश्वः (kuvalāśvaḥ) - Kuvalāśva; महासुरम् (mahāsuram) - the great asura; सुरशत्रुम् (suraśatrum) - enemy of the gods; अमित्रघ्नः (amitraghnaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; त्रिलोकेशः (trilokeśaḥ) - lord of the three worlds; इव (iva) - like; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; धुन्धुमारः (dhundhumāraḥ) - Dhundhumāra; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - was known; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; समभवत् (samabhavat) - he became; ततः (tataḥ) - from that (time, event);]
(He, having burned with the weapon, the royal sage Kuvalāśva, the great asura, enemy of the gods, destroyer of enemies, another like the lord of the three worlds. Dhundhumāra thus was known by name, from that he became.)
Having burned up the great asura with his weapon, the royal sage Kuvalāśva, an enemy of the gods and destroyer of foes, became like another lord of the three worlds; from then on he became known by the name Dhundhumāra. (03-195-29)
प्रीतैश्च त्रिदशैः सर्वैर्महर्षिसहितैस्तदा। वरं वृणीष्वेत्युक्तः स प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतस्तदा ॥ अतीव मुदितो राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१९५-३०॥
prītaiś ca tridaśaiḥ sarvair maharṣi-sahitaiḥ tadā। varaṃ vṛṇīṣva ity uktaḥ sa prāñjaliḥ praṇatas tadā॥ atīva mudito rājann idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥03-195-30॥
[प्रीतैः (prītaiḥ) - by those who are pleased; च (ca) - and; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the thirty gods (devas); सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; महर्षिसहितैः (maharṣi-sahitaiḥ) - together with great sages; तदा (tadā) - then; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; सः (saḥ) - he; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed down; तदा (tadā) - then; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - rejoicing; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; ॥०३-१९५-३०॥ (03-195-30) - (3-195-30);]
(By those pleased, and by all the thirty gods together with the great sages, then, "Choose a boon" thus addressed, he, with joined palms, bowed down then, exceedingly rejoicing, O king, this speech spoke (3-195-30))

दद्यां वित्तं द्विजाग्र्येभ्यः शत्रूणां चापि दुर्जयः। सख्यं च विष्णुना मे स्याद्भूतेष्वद्रोह एव च ॥ धर्मे रतिश्च सततं स्वर्गे वासस्तथाक्षयः ॥०३-१९५-३१॥
dadyāṃ vittaṃ dvijāgryebhyaḥ śatrūṇāṃ cāpi durjayaḥ। sakhyaṃ ca viṣṇunā me syādbhūteṣvadroha eva ca ॥ dharme ratiśca satataṃ svarge vāsastathākṣayaḥ ॥03-195-31॥
[दद्यां (dadyāṃ) - may I give; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; द्विजाग्र्येभ्यः (dvijāgryebhyaḥ) - to the foremost twice-born; शत्रूणां (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दुर्जयः (durjayaḥ) - difficult to conquer; सख्यं (sakhyaṃ) - friendship; च (ca) - and; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - with Viṣṇu; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; भूमिषु (bhūteṣu) - towards beings; अद्रोहः (adrohaḥ) - absence of hatred; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; रतिः (ratiḥ) - delight; च (ca) - and; सततं (satataṃ) - always; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; वासः (vāsaḥ) - abode; तथा (tathā) - also; अक्षयः (akṣayaḥ) - imperishable;]
(May I give wealth to the foremost twice-born, and may I also be unconquerable by enemies; may I have friendship with Viṣṇu, and indeed only absence of hatred towards beings; and may there be always delight in dharma, and an imperishable abode in heaven.)

[तथा (tathā) - so; thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; इति (iti) - thus; so; (end of quotation); ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; प्रीतैः (prītaiḥ) - pleased; satisfied; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was addressed; was spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; च (ca) - and; सगन्धर्वैः (sa-gandharvaiḥ) - together with the gandharvas; उत्तङ्केन (uttankena) - by Uttanka; च (ca) - and; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise;]
(So let it be—thus then by the pleased gods was addressed he, the king, by the sages and together with the gandharvas, by Uttanka, and by the wise.)
"So be it"—then the pleased gods, along with the sages, the gandharvas, and the wise Uttanka, addressed the king. (3-195-32)
सभाज्य चैनं विविधैराशीर्वादैस्ततो नृपम्। देवा महर्षयश्चैव स्वानि स्थानानि भेजिरे ॥०३-१९५-३३॥
sabhājya cainaṁ vividhairāśīrvādais tato nṛpam। devā maharṣayaś caiva svāni sthānāni bhejire ॥03-195-33॥

(Having honored this king with various blessings, then the gods and the great sages indeed went to their own places.)

तस्य पुत्रास्त्रयः शिष्टा युधिष्ठिर तदाभवन्। दृढाश्वः कपिलाश्वश्च चन्द्राश्वश्चैव भारत ॥ तेभ्यः परम्परा राजन्निक्ष्वाकूणां महात्मनाम् ॥०३-१९५-३४॥
tasya putrāstrayaḥ śiṣṭā yudhiṣṭhira tadābhavan। dṛḍhāśvaḥ kapilāśvaśca candrāśvaścaiva bhārata ॥ tebhyaḥ paramparā rājann ikṣvākūṇāṃ mahātmanām ॥03-195-34॥

(Of him, sons, three, remained, Yudhiṣṭhira, then, were. Dṛḍhāśva, and Kapilāśva, and also Candrāśva, O Bhārata. From them, lineage, O king, of the Ikṣvākus, of the great-souled.)

evaṁ sa nihatas tena kuvalāśvena sattama। dhundhurdai tyo mahāvīryo madhukaiṭabhayoḥ sutaḥ॥03-195-35॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; स (sa) - he; निहत: (nihataḥ) - slain; तेन (tena) - by him; कुवलाश्वेन (kuvalāśvena) - by Kuvalāśva; सत्तम (sattama) - O best among beings; धुन्धुर् (dhundhur) - Dhundhu; दैत्यः (daityaḥ) - the daitya (demon); महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great might; मधुकैटभयोः (madhukaiṭabhayoḥ) - of Madhu and Kaiṭabha; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
(Thus he was slain by him, by Kuvalāśva, O best among beings; Dhundhu, the daitya, of great might, son of Madhu and Kaiṭabha.)
Thus, O best among beings, Dhundhu, the mighty daitya, son of Madhu and Kaiṭabha, was slain by Kuvalāśva. (03-195-35)
कुवलाश्वस्तु नृपतिर्धुन्धुमार इति स्मृतः। नाम्ना च गुणसंयुक्तस्तदा प्रभृति सोऽभवत् ॥०३-१९५-३६॥
kuvalāśvastu nṛpatirdhundhumāra iti smṛtaḥ। nāmnā ca guṇasaṁyuktastadā prabhṛti so'bhavat ॥03-195-36॥

Kuvalāśva, the king, is remembered as Dhundhumāra; from then on, he became known by that name and as one endowed with good qualities. (03-195-36)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि। धौन्धुमारमुपाख्यानं प्रथितं यस्य कर्मणा ॥०३-१९५-३७॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātam yan māṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi। dhaumadhumāram upākhyānaṁ prathitaṁ yasya karmaṇā॥03-195-37॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - (you) ask; धौन्धुमारम् (dhaumadhumāram) - Dhāumadhumāra; उपाख्यानम् (upākhyānam) - narrative; प्रथितम् (prathitam) - renowned; यस्यम् (yasya) - whose; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by deed;]
(This to you all has been told, which me you ask; the Dhāumadhumāra narrative renowned by whose deed.)
All this that you have asked me has been told to you—the well-known story of Dhāumadhumāra, famed for his deed. (03-195-37)
इदं तु पुण्यमाख्यानं विष्णोः समनुकीर्तनम्। शृणुयाद्यः स धर्मात्मा पुत्रवांश्च भवेन्नरः ॥०३-१९५-३८॥
idaṃ tu puṇyam ākhyānam viṣṇoḥ sam-anukīrtanam। śṛṇuyāt yaḥ sa dharmātmā putravān ca bhavet naraḥ॥03-195-38॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - meritorious; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - narrative; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; समनुकीर्तनम् (sam-anukīrtanam) - complete recitation; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - may listen; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; पुत्रवान् (putravān) - having sons; च (ca) - and; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(This but meritorious narrative of Viṣṇu, complete recitation, may listen who, he righteous-souled, having sons and may become man.)
But whoever listens to this meritorious narrative, a full recitation of Viṣṇu, he becomes a righteous person and will have sons, being born as a man. (03-195-38)
आयुष्मान्धृतिमांश्चैव श्रुत्वा भवति पर्वसु। न च व्याधिभयं किञ्चित्प्राप्नोति विगतज्वरः ॥०३-१९५-३९॥
āyuṣmāndhṛtimāṁścaiva śrutvā bhavati parvasu। na ca vyādhibhayaṁ kiñcitprāpnoti vigatajvaraḥ ॥03-195-39॥
[आयुष्मान् (āyuṣmān) - long-lived; धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) - possessing fortitude; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भवति (bhavati) - he becomes; पर्वसु (parvasu) - during the festivals; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; व्याधि-भयम् (vyādhi-bhayam) - fear of disease; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - he obtains; विगत-ज्वरः (vigata-jvaraḥ) - free from fever;]
(Long-lived, possessing fortitude, and indeed, having heard, he becomes during the festivals. Not and fear of disease anything he obtains, free from fever.)
He becomes long-lived and steadfast, having heard (this) during festivals. And being free from fever, he does not incur any fear of disease. (03-195-39)
