आपस्य मुदिता भार्या सहस्य परमा प्रिया। भूपतिर्भुवभर्ता च जनयत्पावकं परम् ॥०३-२१२-१॥

(The joyful wife of Āpa, the supreme beloved of Sahas, and the king, the sustainer of the earth, generated the supreme purifier, fire.)

भूतानां चापि सर्वेषां यं प्राहुः पावकं पतिम्। आत्मा भुवनभर्तेति सान्वयेषु द्विजातिषु ॥०३-२१२-२॥
bhūtānāṃ cāpi sarveṣāṃ yaṃ prāhuḥ pāvakaṃ patim। ātmā bhuvanabharteti sānvayeṣu dvijātiṣu ॥03-212-2॥
[भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; यम् (yam) - whom; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they call; पावकम् (pāvakam) - purifier; पतिम् (patim) - lord; आत्मा (ātmā) - soul; भुवनभर्ता (bhuvanabhartā) - sustainer of the world; इति (iti) - thus; सान्वयेषु (sānvayeṣu) - among the households; द्विजातिषु (dvijātiṣu) - among the twice-born;]
(Of beings and also of all, whom they call the purifier, the lord, the soul, the sustainer of the world—thus among the households among the twice-born.)

महतां चैव भूतानां सर्वेषामिह यः पतिः। भगवान्स महातेजा नित्यं चरति पावकः ॥०३-२१२-३॥
mahatāṃ caiva bhūtānāṃ sarveṣām iha yaḥ patiḥ. bhagavān sa mahātejā nityaṃ carati pāvakaḥ ॥03-212-3॥
[महतां (mahatām) - of the great ones; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; इह (iha) - here; यः (yaḥ) - who; पतिः (patiḥ) - the lord; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the glorious one; स (sa) - he; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; चरति (carati) - moves; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Agni (fire);]
(Of the great ones and indeed of beings, of all, here, who (is) the lord, the glorious he of great brilliance always moves, Agni.)
Agni, the glorious one of great brilliance, who is the lord of all beings and the great ones here, always moves. (03-212-3)
अग्निर्गृहपतिर्नाम नित्यं यज्ञेषु पूज्यते। हुतं वहति यो हव्यमस्य लोकस्य पावकः ॥०३-२१२-४॥
agnirgṛhapatirnāma nityaṃ yajñeṣu pūjyate। hutaṃ vahati yo havyamasya lokasya pāvakaḥ ॥03-212-4॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; (the Vedic deity Agni); गृहपतिः (gṛhapatiḥ) - lord of the house; नाम (nāma) - by name; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is worshipped; हुतम् (hutam) - offering; वहति (vahati) - carries; यः (yaḥ) - who; हव्यम् (havyam) - oblation; अस्य (asya) - of this; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - (the) purifier;]
(Fire, (the) lord of the house by name, always in sacrifices is worshipped. The offering carries, who the oblation of this world (the) purifier.)
The fire, called the lord of the house, is always worshipped in sacrifices. The purifier, who carries the oblation, is the receiver of offerings for this world. (03-212-4)
अपां गर्भो महाभागः सहपुत्रो महाद्भुतः। भूपतिर्भुवभर्ता च महतः पतिरुच्यते ॥०३-२१२-५॥
apāṃ garbho mahābhāgaḥ sahaputro mahādbhutaḥ। bhūpatirbhuvabhartā ca mahataḥ patirucyate ॥03-212-5॥
[अपां (apāṃ) - of waters; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate; सहपुत्रः (sahaputraḥ) - with sons; महाद्भुतः (mahādbhutaḥ) - greatly wondrous; भूपतिः (bhūpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; भुवभर्ता (bhuvabhartā) - sustainer of the world; च (ca) - and; महतः (mahataḥ) - of the great; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(The embryo of the waters, greatly fortunate, with sons, greatly wondrous; the lord of the earth, the sustainer of the world, and the lord of the great is called.)
He who is the embryo of the waters, greatly fortunate, wondrous with his sons, lord of the earth, sustainer of the world, and lord of the great, is called thus. (03-212-5)
दहन्मृतानि भूतानि तस्याग्निर्भरतोऽभवत्। अग्निष्टोमे च नियतः क्रतुश्रेष्ठो भरस्य तु ॥०३-२१२-६॥
dahan mṛtāni bhūtāni tasyāgnir bharato’bhavat। agniṣṭome ca niyataḥ kratuśreṣṭho bharasya tu ॥03-212-6॥
[दहन् (dahan) - burning;, मृतानि (mṛtāni) - dead;, भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures;, तस्य (tasya) - his;, अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire;, भरतः (bharataḥ) - Bharata;, अभवत् (abhavat) - became;, अग्निष्टोमे (agniṣṭome) - in the Agniṣṭoma (sacrifice);, च (ca) - and;, नियतः (niyataḥ) - regulated;, क्रतुश्रेष्ठः (kratuśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among sacrifices;, भरस्य (bharasya) - of Bharata;, तु (tu) - but;]
(Burning the dead creatures, his fire became Bharata. And in the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice, regulated, the best among sacrifices was of Bharata but.)
Burning the dead creatures, his fire became Bharata. And in the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice, it was Bharata who performed the best among regulated sacrifices. (03-212-6)
आयान्तं नियतं दृष्ट्वा प्रविवेशार्णवं भयात्। देवास्तं नाधिगच्छन्ति मार्गमाणा यथादिशम् ॥०३-२१२-७॥
āyāntaṃ niyataṃ dṛṣṭvā praviveśārṇavaṃ bhayāt। devās taṃ nādhigacchanti mārgamāṇā yathādiśam ॥03-212-7॥
[आयान्तं (āyāntam) - approaching; coming; नियतं (niyatam) - certain; definite; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; अर्णवं (arṇavam) - the ocean; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; तम् (tam) - him; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छन्ति (adhigacchanti) - reach; attain; मार्गमाणाः (mārgamāṇāḥ) - seeking; searching; यथादिशम् (yathādiśam) - according to direction; as indicated;]
(Having seen the certain (event) approaching, out of fear he entered the ocean. The gods, seeking him according to (the) direction, do not reach (him). (03-212-7))
Seeing the inevitable approaching, he entered the ocean out of fear. The gods, searching for him as directed, could not find him. (03-212-7)
दृष्ट्वा त्वग्निरथर्वाणं ततो वचनमब्रवीत्। देवानां वह हव्यं त्वमहं वीर सुदुर्बलः ॥ अथर्वन्गच्छ मध्वक्षं प्रियमेतत्कुरुष्व मे ॥०३-२१२-८॥
dṛṣṭvā tv agnir atharvāṇaṃ tato vacanam abravīt। devānāṃ vaha havyaṃ tvam ahaṃ vīra sudurbalaḥ ॥ atharvan gaccha madhvakṣaṃ priyam etat kuruṣva me ॥03-212-8॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; त्व (tv) - you; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire deity); अथर्वाणम् (atharvāṇam) - Atharvan; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; वह (vaha) - carry; हव्यम् (havyaṃ) - offering; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; वीर (vīra) - hero; सुदुर्बलः (sudurbalaḥ) - very weak; अथर्वन् (atharvan) - O Atharvan; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; मध्वक्षम् (madhvakṣaṃ) - to the honey-offering; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; एतत् (etat) - this; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; मे (me) - for me;]
(Having seen you, Agni (spoke) to Atharvan then these words: 'Carry the offering for the gods, you. I, hero, am very weak. O Atharvan, go to the honey-offering, do this dear (thing) for me.' (03-212-8))
Seeing you, Agni then spoke to Atharvan: 'You carry the offering for the gods; I am very weak, O hero. O Atharvan, go to the honey-offering and do this favor for me.' (03-212-8)
प्रेष्य चाग्निरथर्वाणमन्यं देशं ततोऽगमत्। मत्स्यास्तस्य समाचख्युः क्रुद्धस्तानग्निरब्रवीत् ॥०३-२१२-९॥
preṣya cāgnir atharvāṇam anyaṃ deśaṃ tato'gamāt। matsyās tasya samācakhyuḥ kruddhas tān agnir abravīt॥03-212-9॥
[प्रेष्य (preṣya) - having sent; च (ca) - and; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire god); अथर्वाणम् (atharvāṇam) - Atharvan (the sage Atharvan); अन्यं (anyaṃ) - another; देशं (deśam) - region; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; अगमत् (agamat) - went; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes; तस्य (tasya) - to him; समाचख्युः (samācakhyuḥ) - reported; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; तान् (tān) - them; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having sent Atharvan, and Agni went to another region from there. The fishes reported it to him; being angry, Agni spoke to them.)
After sending Atharvan, Agni went to another region. The fishes reported this to him; angered, Agni addressed them. (03-212-9)
भक्ष्या वै विविधैर्भावैर्भविष्यथ शरीरिणाम्। अथर्वाणं तथा चापि हव्यवाहोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥०३-२१२-१०॥
bhakṣyā vai vividhairbhāvairbhaviṣyatha śarīriṇām। atharvāṇaṃ tathā cāpi havyavāho'bravīd vacaḥ ॥03-212-10॥
[भक्ष्या (bhakṣyā) - to be eaten; food; edible; by; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; by diverse; भावैः (bhāvaiḥ) - by states; by manifestations; by natures; भविष्यथ (bhaviṣyatha) - you will become; you shall be; शरीरिणाम् (śarīriṇām) - of embodied beings; of those who have bodies; अथर्वाणं (atharvāṇam) - Atharvan (proper noun); the sage Atharvan; तथा (tathā) - likewise; so; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हव्यवाहः (havyavāhaḥ) - Agni; the fire (one who carries oblations); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; speech; utterance;]
(To be eaten indeed by diverse natures you will become of embodied beings. To Atharvan likewise also Havyavaha said a word.)
You will become food of various kinds for embodied beings, indeed. Likewise, Havyavaha (Agni) spoke these words also to Atharvan. (03-212-10)
अनुनीयमानोऽपि भृशं देववाक्याद्धि तेन सः। नैच्छद्वोढुं हविः सर्वं शरीरं च समत्यजत् ॥०३-२१२-११॥
anunīyamāno'pi bhṛśaṁ devavākyāddhi tena saḥ। naicchadvoḍhuṁ haviḥ sarvaṁ śarīraṁ ca samatyajat॥03-212-11॥
[अनुनीयमानः (anunīyamānaḥ) - being persuaded; अपि (api) - even; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - very much; देववाक्यात् (devavākyāt) - from the words of the god; हि (hi) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; सः (saḥ) - he; नैच्छत् (naicchat) - did not wish; वोढुम् (voḍhum) - to bear; हविः (haviḥ) - offering; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; शरीरम् (śarīram) - the body; च (ca) - and; समत्यजत् (samatyajat) - completely abandoned;]
(Even though being very much persuaded by the words of the god indeed by him, he did not wish to bear all the offering and also completely abandoned the body.)
Although greatly urged by the god's words, he did not wish to accept the whole offering and entirely gave up his body. (03-212-11)
स तच्छरीरं सन्त्यज्य प्रविवेश धरां तदा। भूमिं स्पृष्ट्वासृजद्धातून्पृथक्पृथगतीव हि ॥०३-२१२-१२॥
sa taccharīraṃ santyajya praviveśa dharāṃ tadā। bhūmiṃ spṛṣṭvā asṛjat dhātūn pṛthak pṛthag atīva hi॥03-212-12॥
[स (sa) - he; तच्छरीरं (taccharīram) - that body; सन्त्यज्य (santyajya) - having abandoned; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - he entered; धरां (dharām) - the earth; तदा (tadā) - then; भूमिं (bhūmim) - earth; स्पृष्ट्वा (spṛṣṭvā) - having touched; असृजत् (asṛjat) - he emitted; धातून् (dhātūn) - elements; पृथक् पृथक् (pṛthak pṛthak) - separately; अतीव (atīva) - very; हि (hi) - indeed;]
(He, that body having abandoned, entered the earth then. Earth having touched, he emitted the elements separately, very indeed.)
He, having given up that body, then entered the earth. After touching the ground, he emitted the elements separately, indeed. (3-212-12)
आस्यात्सुगन्धि तेजश्च अस्थिभ्यो देवदारु च। श्लेष्मणः स्फटिकं तस्य पित्तान्मरकतं तथा ॥०३-२१२-१३॥
āsyāt sugandhi tejaś ca asthibhyo devadāru ca| śleṣmaṇaḥ sphaṭikaṃ tasya pittān marakataṃ tathā ॥03-212-13॥
[आस्यात् (āsyāt) - from the mouth; सुगन्धि (sugandhi) - fragrant; तेजः (tejas) - radiance; energy; च (ca) - and; अस्थिभ्यः (asthibhyaḥ) - from the bones; देवदारु (devadāru) - Himalayan cedar; च (ca) - and; श्लेष्मणः (śleṣmaṇaḥ) - from phlegm; स्फटिकम् (sphaṭikam) - crystal; तस्य (tasya) - from it; of it; पित्तात् (pittāt) - from bile; मरकतं (marakataṃ) - emerald; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(From the mouth, fragrance and radiance; and from the bones, Himalayan cedar also. From phlegm, crystal of it; from bile, likewise emerald.)
From the mouth arise fragrance and radiance; from the bones, Himalayan cedar. Crystal comes from phlegm, and from bile, likewise, emerald. (03-212-13)
यकृत्कृष्णायसं तस्य त्रिभिरेव बभुः प्रजाः। नखास्तस्याभ्रपटलं शिराजालानि विद्रुमम् ॥ शरीराद्विविधाश्चान्ये धातवोऽस्याभवन्नृप ॥०३-२१२-१४॥
yakṛt-kṛṣṇāyasaṃ tasya tribhir-eva babhuḥ prajāḥ। nakhās-tasyābhra-paṭalaṃ śirā-jālāni vidrumam ॥ śarīrād vividhāś cānye dhātavo 'syābhavan nṛpa ॥03-212-14॥
[यकृत् (yakṛt) - liver; कृष्णायसं (kṛṣṇāyasam) - black iron (steel); तस्य (tasya) - of him; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - from the three (elements); एव (eva) - indeed; बभुः (babhuḥ) - arose; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; नखाः (nakhāḥ) - nails; तस्य (tasya) - of him; आभ्रपटलम् (ābhra-paṭalam) - the covering of clouds; शिराजालानि (śirā-jālāni) - networks of veins; विद्रुमम् (vidrumam) - coral; शरीरात् (śarīrāt) - from the body; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - other; धातवः (dhātavaḥ) - minerals; अस्य (asya) - of him; अभवन् (abhavan) - arose; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(The liver (became) black iron of him; from the three indeed arose creatures. The nails of him (became) the cloud covering; the networks of veins coral. From the body various and other minerals of him arose, O king.)
His liver became black iron; from the three (elements) indeed, creatures arose. His nails became the covering of clouds; the networks of his veins became coral. From his body, various and other minerals arose, O king. (03-212-14)
एवं त्यक्त्वा शरीरं तु परमे तपसि स्थितः। भृग्वङ्गिरादिभिर्भूयस्तपसोत्थापितस्तदा ॥०३-२१२-१५॥
evaṃ tyaktvā śarīraṃ tu parame tapasi sthitaḥ। bhṛgvaṅgirādibhirbhūyastapasotthāpitastadā ॥03-212-15॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; शरीरं (śarīraṃ) - body; तु (tu) - but; परमे (parame) - supreme; तपसि (tapasi) - penance; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - having remained; भृग्वङ्गिरादिभिः (bhṛgvaṅgirādibhiḥ) - by Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, and others; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; उत्थापितः (utthāpitaḥ) - raised up; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus having abandoned the body, but having remained in supreme penance, by Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, and others, again, by penance, (he) was raised up then.)
Thus, having abandoned his body, yet remaining in the highest penance, he was then raised up again by the penance of Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, and others. (03-212-15)
भृशं जज्वाल तेजस्वी तपसाप्यायितः शिखी। दृष्ट्वा ऋषीन्भयाच्चापि प्रविवेश महार्णवम् ॥०३-२१२-१६॥
bhṛśaṃ jajvāla tejasvī tapasāpyāyitaḥ śikhī। dṛṣṭvā ṛṣīn bhayāc cāpi praviveśa mahārṇavam॥ 03-212-16॥
[भृशं (bhṛśam) - excessively; जज्वाल (jajvāla) - blazed; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; तपसा अप्यायितः (tapasā-apyāyitaḥ) - strengthened by asceticism; शिखी (śikhī) - the flame; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; भयात् च अपि (bhayāt ca api) - even from fear; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; महार्णवम् (mahārṇavam) - the great ocean;]
(Excessively blazed brilliant, strengthened by asceticism, the flame. Having seen the sages, even from fear, entered the great ocean.)
The brilliant flame, greatly blazing and strengthened by asceticism, upon seeing the sages, out of fear, entered the great ocean. (03-212-16)
तस्मिन्नष्टे जगद्भीतमथर्वाणमथाश्रितम्। अर्चयामासुरेवैनमथर्वाणं सुरर्षयः ॥०३-२१२-१७॥
tasminnaṣṭe jagadbhītam atharvāṇam athāśritam। arcayāmāsur evainam atharvāṇaṃ surarṣayaḥ ॥03-212-17॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (situation); अष्टे (aṣṭe) - being lost; (from 'aṣṭa', lost; generally agrees with 'tasmin'); जगत् (jagat) - the world; भीतम् (bhītam) - terrified; अथर्वाणम् (atharvāṇam) - Atharvan; (Vedic seer, or Atharva Veda, accusative singular masculine); अथ (atha) - then; आश्रितम् (āśritam) - having resorted to; अर्चयामासुः (arcayāmāsuḥ) - they worshipped; एव (eva) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; अथर्वाणं (atharvāṇaṃ) - (the) Atharvan; सुरर्षयः (surarṣayaḥ) - the divine sages;]
(In that lost (state), the world terrified, having then resorted to Atharvan, the divine sages indeed worshipped him, Atharvan.)
When it was lost and the world was terrified, the divine sages then took refuge in Atharvan and indeed worshipped him, Atharvan. (03-212-17)
अथर्वा त्वसृजल्लोकानात्मनालोक्य पावकम्। मिषतां सर्वभूतानामुन्ममाथ महार्णवम् ॥०३-२१२-१८॥
atharvā tvasṛjallokānātmanālokya pāvakam। miṣatāṃ sarvabhūtānāmunmamātha mahārṇavam ॥03-212-18॥
[अथर्वा (atharvā) - Atharvā; (proper noun, name); त्व (tva) - indeed; surely; असृजात् (asṛjat) - created; produced; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by (his) self; through (his) own self; अवलोक्य (avalokya) - having observed; having seen; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; मिषताम् (miṣatām) - as they watched; in the presence of (those) observing; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; उन्ममाथ (unmamātha) - churned; agitated; महार्णवम् (mahārṇavam) - great ocean;]
(Atharvā indeed created the worlds, having observed by his own self the fire. As all beings watched, he churned the great ocean.)
Atharvā, observing the fire by his own Self, created the worlds. As all living beings looked on, he churned the great ocean. (03-212-18)
एवमग्निर्भगवता नष्टः पूर्वमथर्वणा। आहूतः सर्वभूतानां हव्यं वहति सर्वदा ॥०३-२१२-१९॥
evam agnir bhagavatā naṣṭaḥ pūrvam atharvaṇā। āhūtaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ havyaṃ vahati sarvadā ॥03-212-19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire); भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the venerable one; नष्टः (naṣṭaḥ) - purified; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; अथर्वणा (atharvaṇā) - by Atharvan; आहूतः (āhūtaḥ) - invoked; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; हव्यम् (havyam) - offering (oblations); वहति (vahati) - carries; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always;]
(Thus Agni, by the venerable one, purified formerly by Atharvan, invoked, for all beings, offering carries always.)
Thus, Agni, having been purified by the venerable Atharvan in the past, when invoked, always carries the oblations of all beings. (03-212-19)
एवं त्वजनयद्धिष्ण्यान्वेदोक्तान्विबुधान्बहून्। विचरन्विविधान्देशान्भ्रममाणस्तु तत्र वै ॥०३-२१२-२०॥
evaṃ tv ajanayad dhiṣṇyān vedoktān vibudhān bahūn | vicarann vividhān deśān bhramamāṇas tu tatra vai ॥03-212-20॥
[एवं (evaṃ) (evaṃ) - thus; त्व (tva) (tva) - but; अजनयत् (ajanayat) (ajanayat) - he produced; धिष्ण्यान् (dhiṣṇyān) (dhiṣṇyān) - sacrificial seats; वेदोक्तान् (vedoktān) (vedoktān) - prescribed by the Veda; विबुधान् (vibudhān) (vibudhān) - wise ones; बहून् (bahūn) (bahūn) - many; विचरन् (vicaran) (vicaran) - wandering; विविधान् (vividhān) (vividhān) - various; देशान् (deśān) (deśān) - regions; भ्रममाणः (bhramamāṇaḥ) (bhramamāṇaḥ) - roaming; तु (tu) (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) (tatra) - there; वै (vai) (vai) - indeed;]
(Thus but he produced sacrificial seats prescribed by the Veda, many wise ones; wandering various regions, roaming but there indeed.)
Thus, he produced many wise sacrificial seats as prescribed by the Veda; wandering through various regions, he roamed about there indeed. (03-212-20)
सिन्धुवर्जं पञ्च नद्यो देविकाथ सरस्वती। गङ्गा च शतकुम्भा च शरयूर्गण्डसाह्वया ॥०३-२१२-२१॥
sindhu-varjaṃ pañca nadyo devikātha Sarasvatī। gaṅgā ca śatakumbhā ca śarayūr-gaṇḍasāhvayā ॥03-212-21॥
[सिन्धुवर्जम् (sindhu-varjam) - with the exception of Sindhu; पञ्च (pañca) - five; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; देविका अथ (devikā atha) - Devikā and; सरस्वती (Sarasvatī) - Sarasvatī; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; च (ca) - and; शतकुम्भा (śatakumbhā) - Śatakumbhā; च (ca) - and; शरयूः (śarayūḥ) - Sarayū; गण्डसाह्वया (gaṇḍasāhvayā) - named Gaṇḍasāhvayā;]
(With the exception of Sindhu, five rivers—Devikā and Sarasvatī, Gaṅgā and Śatakumbhā, and Sarayū named Gaṇḍasāhvayā.)
Apart from the Sindhu, the five rivers are Devikā, Sarasvatī, Gaṅgā, Śatakumbhā, and the Sarayū called Gaṇḍasāhvayā. (03-212-21)
चर्मण्वती मही चैव मेध्या मेधातिथिस्तथा। ताम्रावती वेत्रवती नद्यस्तिस्रोऽथ कौशिकी ॥०३-२१२-२२॥
carmaṇvatī mahī caiva medhyā medhātithis tathā। tāmrāvatī vetravatī nadyas tisro 'tha kauśikī॥03-212-22॥
[चर्मण्वती (carmaṇvatī) - Carmaṇvatī; (a river; literally: she who has/leads with skin;) मही (mahī) - Mahī; (a river; literally: the great one;) चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; मेध्या (medhyā) - Medhyā; (a river; literally: pure/sacred;) मेधातिथिस्तथा (medhātithis tathā) - Medhātithi; (a river; literally: the guest of sacrifice;) as well; ताम्रावती (tāmrāvatī) - Tāmrāvatī; (a river; literally: she who is possessed of copper;) वेत्रवती (vetravatī) - Vetravatī; (a river; literally: she who is possessed of reeds;) नद्यस्तिस्रः (nadyas tisraḥ) - rivers; three; अथ (atha) - then; कौशिकी (kauśikī) - Kauśikī; (a river; literally: descended from the Kuśika lineage;);]
(Carmaṇvatī, Mahī and indeed Medhyā, and likewise Medhātithi; Tāmrāvatī, Vetravatī—three rivers—then (there is) Kauśikī.)

तमसा नर्मदा चैव नदी गोदावरी तथा। वेण्णा प्रवेणी भीमा च मेद्रथा चैव भारत ॥०३-२१२-२३॥
tamasā narmadā caiva nadī godāvarī tathā। veṇṇā praveṇī bhīmā ca medrathā caiva bhārata ॥03-212-23॥
[तमसा (tamasā) - [the river] Tamasā; नर्मदा (narmadā) - Narmadā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नदी (nadī) - river; गोदावरी (godāvarī) - Godāvarī; तथा (tathā) - so; वेण्णा (veṇṇā) - Veṇṇā; प्रवेणी (praveṇī) - Praveṇī; भीमा (bhīmā) - Bhīmā; च (ca) - and; मेद्रथा (medrathā) - Medrathā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Tamasā, Narmadā and indeed river Godāvarī so, Veṇṇā, Praveṇī, Bhīmā and Medrathā also indeed, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, [there are] the Tamasā, Narmadā, river Godāvarī as well as Veṇṇā, Praveṇī, Bhīmā, and Medrathā. (03-212-23)
भारती सुप्रयोगा च कावेरी मुर्मुरा तथा। कृष्णा च कृष्णवेण्णा च कपिला शोण एव च ॥ एता नद्यस्तु धिष्ण्यानां मातरो याः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥०३-२१२-२४॥
bhāratī suprayogā ca kāverī murmurā tathā। kṛṣṇā ca kṛṣṇaveṇṇā ca kapilā śoṇa eva ca॥ etā nadyastu dhiṣṇyānāṃ mātaroyāḥ prakīrtitāḥ॥03-212-24॥
[भारती (bhāratī) - Bharati (name of a river); सुप्रयोगा (suprayogā) - Suprayoga (name of a river); च (ca) - and; कावेरी (kāverī) - Kaveri (name of a river); मुर्मुरा (murmurā) - Murmura (name of a river); तथा (tathā) - as well; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Krishna (name of a river); च (ca) - and; कृष्णवेण्णा (kṛṣṇaveṇṇā) - Krishnavenna (name of a river); च (ca) - and; कपिला (kapilā) - Kapila (name of a river); शोण (śoṇa) - Shona (name of a river); एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एता (etā) - these; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; तु (tu) - but; धिष्ण्यानाम् (dhiṣṇyānām) - of the seats (of sacred fire altars); मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; याः (yāḥ) - who; प्रकीर्तिताः (prakīrtitāḥ) - are declared;]
(Bharati, Suprayoga and Kaveri, Murmura as well; Krishna and Krishnavenna and Kapila, Shona indeed and; these rivers, but, of the sacred seats, mothers, who are declared.)
Bharati, Suprayoga, Kaveri, Murmura, Krishna, Krishnavenna, Kapila, and Shona—these rivers are spoken of as the mothers of the sacred seats. (03-212-24)
अद्भुतस्य प्रिया भार्या तस्याः पुत्रो विडूरथः। यावन्तः पावकाः प्रोक्ताः सोमास्तावन्त एव च ॥०३-२१२-२५॥
adbhutasya priyā bhāryā tasyāḥ putro viḍūrathaḥ। yāvantaḥ pāvakāḥ proktāḥ somās tāvanta eva ca ॥03-212-25॥
[अद्भुतस्य (adbhutasya) - of Adbhuta; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; विडूरथः (viḍūrathaḥ) - Viḍūratha; यावन्तः (yāvantaḥ) - as many as; पावकाः (pāvakāḥ) - fires; प्रोक्ताः (proktāḥ) - have been mentioned; सोमाः (somāḥ) - Somas; तावन्तः (tāvantaḥ) - just as many; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Of Adbhuta the beloved wife, her son was Viḍūratha. As many fires have been mentioned, just as many Somas indeed and;)
The beloved wife of Adbhuta had a son named Viḍūratha. As many fires as have been mentioned, just so many Somas also are there. (03-212-25)
अत्रेश्चाप्यन्वये जाता ब्रह्मणो मानसाः प्रजाः। अत्रिः पुत्रान्स्रष्टुकामस्तानेवात्मन्यधारयत् ॥ तस्य तद्ब्रह्मणः कायान्निर्हरन्ति हुताशनाः ॥०३-२१२-२६॥
atreścāpyanvaye jātā brahmaṇo manasāḥ prajāḥ। atriḥ putrān sraṣṭukāmas tān eva ātmany adhārayat। tasya tad brahmaṇaḥ kāyān nirharanti hutāśanāḥ॥03-212-26॥
[अत्रेः (atreḥ) - of Atri; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अन्वये (anvaye) - in the lineage; जाता (jātā) - born; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; मानसाः (manasāḥ) - mental; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - offspring; अत्रिः (atriḥ) - Atri; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; स्रष्टु (sraṣṭu) - to create; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desiring; तान् (tān) - them; एव (eva) - indeed; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in (his) self; अधारयत् (adhārayat) - he placed; तस्य (tasya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; कायात् (kāyāt) - from the body; निर्हरन्ति (nirharanti) - they bring forth; हुताशनाः (hutāśanāḥ) - the fires;]
(Of Atri also in the lineage, were born the mental offspring of Brahmā. Atri, desiring to create sons, placed them indeed in himself. From his, that Brahmā's, body, the fires bring them forth.)
In the lineage of Atri also, the mental offspring of Brahmā were born. When Atri desired to create sons, he kept them within himself. Then, from the body of that Brahmā, the fires bring them forth. (3-212-26)
एवमेते महात्मानः कीर्तितास्तेऽग्नयो मया। अप्रमेया यथोत्पन्नाः श्रीमन्तस्तिमिरापहाः ॥०३-२१२-२७॥
evam ete mahātmānaḥ kīrtitās te'gnayo mayā। aprameyā yathotpannāḥ śrīmantas timirāpahāḥ ॥03-212-27॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एते (ete) - these; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; कीर्तिताः (kīrtitāḥ) - have been described; ते (te) - those; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; मया (mayā) - by me; अप्रमेयाः (aprameyāḥ) - immeasurable; यथोत्पन्नाः (yathotpannāḥ) - as arisen; श्रीमन्तः (śrīmantaḥ) - possessed of splendor; तिमिरापहाः (timirāpahāḥ) - dispellers of darkness;]
(Thus these great-souled ones have been described, those fires by me, immeasurable as arisen, possessed of splendor, dispellers of darkness.)
Thus I have described these great-souled fires, immeasurable as they have arisen, resplendent and dispelling darkness. (03-212-27)
अद्भुतस्य तु माहात्म्यं यथा वेदेषु कीर्तितम्। तादृशं विद्धि सर्वेषामेको ह्येष हुताशनः ॥०३-२१२-२८॥
adbhutasya tu māhātmyaṃ yathā vedeṣu kīrtitam। tādṛśaṃ viddhi sarveṣām eko hyeṣa hutāśanaḥ ॥03-212-28॥
[अद्भुतस्य (adbhutasya) - of the marvelous; तु (tu) - but; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; यथा (yathā) - as; वेदेषु (vedeṣu) - in the Vedas; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) - is celebrated; तादृशं (tādṛśaṃ) - such (a one); विद्धि (viddhi) - know; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; हि (hi) - indeed; एष (eṣa) - this; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - the fire (Agni);]
(Of the marvelous but greatness as in the Vedas is celebrated; such know of all, one indeed this (is) the fire.)
But know that the greatness of the marvelous, as is celebrated in the Vedas, such is this very one Fire (Agni) alone among all. (03-212-28)
एक एवैष भगवान्विज्ञेयः प्रथमोऽङ्गिराः। बहुधा निःसृतः कायाज्ज्योतिष्टोमः क्रतुर्यथा ॥०३-२१२-२९॥
eka evaiṣa bhagavān vijñeyaḥ prathamo'ṅgirāḥ। bahudhā niḥsṛtaḥ kāyāj jyotiṣṭomaḥ kratur yathā॥03-212-29॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) (ekaḥ) - one; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) (eṣaḥ) - this; भगवान् (bhagavān) (bhagavān) - the revered; विज्ञेयः (vijñeyaḥ) (vijñeyaḥ) - to be understood; प्रथमः (prathamaḥ) (prathamaḥ) - the first; अङ्गिराः (aṅgirāḥ) (aṅgirāḥ) - Aṅgirās; बहुधा (bahudhā) (bahudhā) - in many ways; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) (niḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged; कायात् (kāyāt) (kāyāt) - from the body; ज्योतिष्टोमः (jyotiṣṭomaḥ) (jyotiṣṭomaḥ) - Jyotiṣṭoma (a Vedic sacrifice); क्रतुः (kratuḥ) (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as;]
(One indeed this revered (being) is to be understood, the first Aṅgirās; in many ways emerged from the body, just as the Jyotiṣṭoma sacrifice.)
This revered one, the first Aṅgirās, is to be understood as one alone, who, just as the Jyotiṣṭoma sacrifice emerges in many forms from the body, has emerged in manifold ways. (03-212-29)
इत्येष वंशः सुमहानग्नीनां कीर्तितो मया। पावितो विविधैर्मन्त्रैर्हव्यं वहति देहिनाम् ॥०३-२१२-३०॥
ity eṣa vaṃśaḥ sumahān agnīnām kīrtito mayā । pāvito vividhaiḥ mantraiḥ havyaṃ vahati dehinām ॥03-212-30॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एष (eṣa) - this; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - lineage; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अग्नीनाम् (agnīnām) - of fires; कीर्तितः (kīrtitaḥ) - has been recounted; मया (mayā) - by me; पावितः (pāvitaḥ) - purified; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - mantras; हव्यम् (havyaṃ) - offering; वहति (vahati) - carries; देहिनाम् (dehinām) - of embodied beings;]
(Thus, this lineage, very great, of fires, has been recounted by me. Purified by various mantras, the offering carries (to the gods) of embodied beings.)
