Markandeya said.
ऋषयस्तु महाघोरान्दृष्ट्वोत्पातान्पृथग्विधान्। अकुर्वञ्शान्तिमुद्विग्ना लोकानां लोकभावनाः ॥०३-२१५-१॥
ṛṣayas tu mahāghorān dṛṣṭvotpātān pṛthag-vidhān। akurvañ śāntim udvignā lokānāṃ loka-bhāvanāḥ॥03-215-1॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; तु (tu) - but; महाघोरान् (mahā-ghorān) - very terrible; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; उत्पातान् (utpātān) - omens; पृथग्विधान् (pṛthag-vidhān) - of various kinds; अकुर्वन् (akurvan) - performed; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace-rite; उद्विग्नाः (udvignāḥ) - disturbed; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; लोकभावनाः (loka-bhāvanāḥ) - protectors of the worlds;]
(Sages but, very terrible, having seen omens of various kinds, performed peace-rite, disturbed, of the worlds, protectors of the worlds.)
But the sages, the protectors of the worlds, having seen very terrible omens of various kinds, being disturbed, performed a peace-rite for the worlds. (03-215-1)
निवसन्ति वने ये तु तस्मिंश्चैत्ररथे जनाः। तेऽब्रुवन्नेष नोऽनर्थः पावकेनाहृतो महान् ॥ सङ्गम्य षड्भिः पत्नीभिः सप्तर्षीणामिति स्म ह ॥०३-२१५-२॥
nivasanti vane ye tu tasmiñcaitrarathe janāḥ। te'bruvanneṣa no'narthaḥ pāvakenāhṛto mahān॥ saṅgamya ṣaḍbhiḥ patnībhiḥ saptarṣīṇāmiti sma ha॥03-215-2॥
[निवसन्ति (nivasanti) - (they) dwell; वने (vane) - in the forest; ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; चैत्ररथे (caitrarathe) - Caitraratha (name of the place/forest); जनाः (janāḥ) - people; ते (te) - they; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; एष (eṣa) - this; नः (naḥ) - our; अनर्थः (anarthaḥ) - misfortune; पावकेन (pāvakena) - by fire; आहृतः (āhṛtaḥ) - caused, brought about; महान् (mahān) - great; सङ्गम्य (saṅgamya) - having met; षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - with six; पत्नीभिः (patnībhiḥ) - wives; सप्तर्षीणाम् (saptarṣīṇām) - of the seven sages; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - truly;]
((Those) who dwell in the forest but in that Caitraratha, (the) people, they said, "This great misfortune has been caused to us by fire, having met with the six wives of the seven sages," thus indeed truly.)
Those people who lived in the Caitraratha forest said, "This great misfortune has befallen us due to the fire, as a result of meeting the six wives of the seven sages," thus indeed. (03-215-2)
अपरे गरुडीमाहुस्त्वयानर्थोऽयमाहृतः। यैर्दृष्टा सा तदा देवी तस्या रूपेण गच्छती ॥ न तु तत्स्वाहया कर्म कृतं जानाति वै जनः ॥०३-२१५-३॥
apare garuḍīm āhus tvayā anartho'ayam āhṛtaḥ। yair dṛṣṭā sā tadā devī tasyā rūpeṇa gacchatī॥ na tu tat-svāhayā karma kṛtaṃ jānāti vai janaḥ॥03-215-3॥
[अपरे (apare) (apare) - others; गरुडीम् (garuḍīm) (garuḍīm) - Garuḍī (a female possessed of or related to Garuḍa); आहुः (āhuḥ) (āhuḥ) - (they) say; त्वया (tvayā) (tvayā) - by you; अनर्थः (anarthaḥ) (anarthaḥ) - misfortune; अयम् (ayam) (ayam) - this; आहृतः (āhṛtaḥ) (āhṛtaḥ) - brought; यैः (yaiḥ) (yaiḥ) - by whom; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) (dṛṣṭā) - seen; सा (sā) (sā) - she; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; देवी (devī) (devī) - goddess; तस्या (tasyā) (tasyā) - her; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) (rūpeṇa) - in the form; गच्छती (gacchatī) (gacchatī) - (she) goes; न (na) (na) - not; तु (tu) (tu) - but; तत्-स्वाहया (tat-svāhayā) (tat-svāhayā) - with that invocation 'svāhā'; कर्म (karma) (karma) - act; कृतम् (kṛtam) (kṛtam) - done; जानाति (jānāti) (jānāti) - (he) knows; वै (vai) (vai) - indeed; जनः (janaḥ) (janaḥ) - person;]
(Others say Garuḍī, by you, this misfortune has been brought. By whom seen, she then, the goddess, in her form goes. But not with that svāhā-invocation the act done does the person indeed know. (03-215-3))
Others say, 'O Garuḍī, this misfortune has been brought by you. Whomever the goddess was seen by at that time, she goes in their form. But no person truly knows that an act done with the invocation 'svāhā' has that effect.' (03-215-3)
सुपर्णी तु वचः श्रुत्वा ममायं तनयस्त्विति। उपगम्य शनैः स्कन्दमाहाहं जननी तव ॥०३-२१५-४॥
suparṇī tu vacaḥ śrutvā mamāyaṃ tanayastviti। upagamya śanaiḥ skandamāhāhaṃ jananī tava ॥03-215-4॥
[सुपर्णी (suparṇī) - Suparṇī (name; a proper noun; literally 'having beautiful wings'); तु (tu) - but; however; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मम (mama) - my; अयम् (ayam) - this; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - son; त्विति (tv iti) - thus (tvam iti = 'is your'); उपगम्य (upagamya) - having approached; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda (proper noun, the deity); आह (āha) - said; अहम् (aham) - I; जननी (jananī) - mother; त्व (tva) - your;]
(Suparṇī but words having heard "my this son is" thus, having approached slowly Skanda, said "I mother your".)
But Suparṇī, having heard the words "this is my son," slowly approached Skanda and said, "I am your mother." (03-215-4)
अथ सप्तर्षयः श्रुत्वा जातं पुत्रं महौजसम्। तत्यजुः षट्तदा पत्नीर्विना देवीमरुन्धतीम् ॥०३-२१५-५॥
atha saptarṣayaḥ śrutvā jātaṃ putraṃ mahaujasam। tatyajuḥ ṣaṭ tadā patnīr vinā devī marundhatīm॥03-215-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सप्तर्षयः (saptarṣayaḥ) - the seven sages; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; जातं (jātaṃ) - born; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; महौजसम् (mahaujasam) - of great energy; तद्यजुः (tatyajuḥ) - abandoned; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; तदा (tadā) - then; पत्नीः (patnīḥ) - wives; विना (vinā) - except; देवी (devī) - the goddess; मरुन्धतीम् (marundhatīm) - Marundhatī (proper noun, Arundhatī) ;]
(Then the seven sages, having heard the birth of the son of great energy, then the six abandoned their wives, except the goddess Marundhatī.)
Then the seven sages, having heard that a son of great energy was born, at that time six of them abandoned their wives, except for the goddess Arundhatī. (03-215-5)
षड्भिरेव तदा जातमाहुस्तद्वनवासिनः। सप्तर्षीनाह च स्वाहा मम पुत्रोऽयमित्युत ॥ अहं जाने नैतदेवमिति राजन्पुनः पुनः ॥०३-२१५-६॥
ṣaḍbhir-eva tadā jātam-āhus-tad-vanavāsinaḥ। saptarṣīn-āha ca svāhā mama putro’yam-ity-uta ॥ ahaṃ jāne naitad-evam-iti rājan-punaḥ punaḥ ॥03-215-6॥
[षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - with six; एव (eva) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; जातम् (jātam) - born; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they said; तत् (tat) - that; वनवासिनः (vanavāsinaḥ) - forest dwellers; सप्तर्षीन् (saptarṣīn) - the seven sages; आह (āha) - (she) said; च (ca) - and; स्वाहा (svāhā) - Svaha (proper noun); मम (mama) - my; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; जाने (jāne) - know; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; इति (iti) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(With six indeed then was born, they said, that the forest dwellers. The seven sages said also, Svaha, "this is my son", indeed. I know not this thus, O king, again and again. (03-215-6))
The forest dwellers said that he was born from six only at that time. The seven sages also, and Svaha herself, said, "This is my son." But I know this is not so, O king, again and again. (03-215-6)
विश्वामित्रस्तु कृत्वेष्टिं सप्तर्षीणां महामुनिः। पावकं कामसन्तप्तमदृष्टः पृष्ठतोऽन्वगात् ॥ तत्तेन निखिलं सर्वमवबुद्धं यथातथम् ॥०३-२१५-७॥
viśvāmitras tu kṛtveṣṭiṃ saptarṣīṇāṃ mahāmuniḥ। pāvakaṃ kāma-santaptam adṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭhato'nvagāt॥ tat tena nikhilaṃ sarvam avabuddhaṃ yathā tatham॥03-215-7॥
[विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; तु (tu) (tu) - but; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) (kṛtvā) - having performed; इष्टिं (iṣṭim) (iṣṭim) - sacrifice; सप्तर्षीणां (saptarṣīṇām) (saptarṣīṇām) - of the Seven Sages; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; पावकं (pāvakam) (pāvakam) - Pāvaka (Fire); कामसन्तप्तम् (kāma-santaptam) (kāma-santaptam) - burnt with desire; अदृष्टः (adṛṣṭaḥ) (adṛṣṭaḥ) - unseen; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अन्वगात् (anvagāt) (anvagāt) - followed; तत् (tat) (tat) - that; तेन (tena) (tena) - by him; निखिलं (nikhilam) (nikhilam) - all; सर्वम् (sarvam) (sarvam) - everything; अवबुद्धं (avabuddham) (avabuddham) - understood; यथातथम् (yathā tatham) (yathā tatham) - as it was;]
(Viśvāmitra but having performed the sacrifice of the Seven Sages, the great sage, Pāvaka (Fire) burned with desire, unseen, from behind followed. That by him all everything was understood as it was.)
But Viśvāmitra, having completed the sacrifice for the Seven Sages, the great sage, followed Pāvaka, who was consumed by desire, unseen, from behind. By him, all was fully understood just as it was. (03-215-7)
विश्वामित्रस्तु प्रथमं कुमारं शरणं गतः। स्तवं दिव्यं सम्प्रचक्रे महासेनस्य चापि सः ॥०३-२१५-८॥
viśvāmitras tu prathamaṃ kumāraṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ। stavaṃ divyaṃ sampracakre mahāsenasya cāpi saḥ॥03-215-8॥
[विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; (proper name); तु (tu) - but; प्रथमं (prathamaṃ) - first; कुमारं (kumāraṃ) - Kumāra; (proper name, son, Skanda); शरणं (śaraṇaṃ) - refuge; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; स्तवं (stavaṃ) - hymn of praise; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; सम्प्रचक्रे (sampracakre) - he performed; महासेनस्य (mahāsenasya) - of Mahāsena; (Skanda); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Viśvāmitra but first to Kumāra refuge having gone, hymn of praise divine he performed of Mahāsena and also he.)
But Viśvāmitra first took refuge in Kumāra; he also composed a divine hymn in praise of Mahāsena. (03-215-8)
मङ्गलानि च सर्वाणि कौमाराणि त्रयोदश। जातकर्मादिकास्तस्य क्रियाश्चक्रे महामुनिः ॥०३-२१५-९॥
maṅgalāni ca sarvāṇi kaumārāṇi trayodaśa। jātakarmādikās tasya kriyāś cakre mahāmuniḥ॥03-215-9॥
[मङ्गलानि (maṅgalāni) - auspicious rites; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; कौमाराणि (kaumārāṇi) - pertaining to childhood; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; जातकर्मादिकाः (jātakarmādikāḥ) - beginning with the birth-rite; तस्य (tasya) - for him; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - rites; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage;]
(The great sage performed all the auspicious rites, thirteen ones pertaining to childhood, and the rites beginning with the birth-ceremony, for him.)
The great sage performed for him all thirteen auspicious childhood rites, beginning with the birth ceremony. (03-215-9)
षड्वक्त्रस्य तु माहात्म्यं कुक्कुटस्य च साधनम्। शक्त्या देव्याः साधनं च तथा पारिषदामपि ॥०३-२१५-१०॥
ṣaḍvaktrasya tu māhātmyaṃ kukkuṭasya ca sādhanam। śaktyā devyāḥ sādhanaṃ ca tathā pāriṣadām api॥03-215-10॥
[षड्वक्त्रस्य (ṣaḍvaktrasya) - of Ṣaḍvaktra (six-faced one, Kārttikeya); तु (tu) - but; indeed; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; कुक्कुटस्य (kukkuṭasya) - of the cock; च (ca) - and; साधनम् (sādhanam) - means; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - by the Śakti (spear); देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the goddess; साधनं (sādhanaṃ) - means; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; पारिषदाम् (pāriṣadām) - of the attendants; अपि (api) - also;]
(Of Ṣaḍvaktra, but, greatness; of the cock, and, means; by the Śakti, of the goddess, means, and, likewise, of the attendants, also.)
But the greatness of Ṣaḍvaktra and the means of the cock; the means of the goddess by the Śakti, as well as those of the attendants also. (03-215-10)
विश्वामित्रश्चकारैतत्कर्म लोकहिताय वै। तस्मादृषिः कुमारस्य विश्वामित्रोऽभवत्प्रियः ॥०३-२१५-११॥
viśvāmitraś cakāraitat karma lokahitāya vai। tasmād ṛṣiḥ kumārasya viśvāmitro'bhavat priyaḥ॥03-215-11॥
[विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; (proper noun; subject); च (ca) - and; अकारयत् (cakāra) - performed; made; एतत् (etat) - this; कर्म (karma) - action; लोकहिताय (lokahitāya) - for the benefit of the world; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; कुमारस्य (kumārasya) - of the boy; of Kumāra; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; beloved;]
(Viśvāmitra and performed this action for the benefit of the world indeed. Therefore, the sage of the boy Viśvāmitra became dear.)
Viśvāmitra performed this deed for the benefit of the world, and so the sage Viśvāmitra became dear to the boy. (03-215-11)
अन्वजानाच्च स्वाहाया रूपान्यत्वं महामुनिः। अब्रवीच्च मुनीन्सर्वान्नापराध्यन्ति वै स्त्रियः ॥ श्रुत्वा तु तत्त्वतस्तस्मात्ते पत्नीः सर्वतोऽत्यजन् ॥०३-२१५-१२॥
anvajānācca svāhāyā rūpānyatvaṃ mahāmuniḥ। abravīcca munīnsarvānnāparādhyanti vai striyaḥ॥ śrutvā tu tattvatastasmātte patnīḥ sarvato'tyajan॥03-215-12॥
[अन्वजानात् (anvajānāt) - having understood; (he) perceived; (from) investigation; च (ca) - and; स्वाहायाः (svāhāyāḥ) - of Svāhā (goddess); रूप (rūpa) - form; अन्यत्वं (anyatvaṃ) - difference; otherness; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; मुनीन् (munīn) - the sages; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; न (na) - not; अपराध्यन्ति (aparādhyanti) - commit offence; do wrong; वै (vai) - indeed; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; in reality; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - they; पत्नीः (patnīḥ) - wives; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - completely; from all (sides); अत्यजन् (atyajan) - abandoned;]
(Having understood also (the) difference of form of Svāhā, the great sage said and (to) all sages, "Women indeed do not commit offence." Having truly heard that, therefore, they completely abandoned (their) wives. (03-215-12))
The great sage, having discerned the difference in Svāhā's form, said to all the sages, "Women indeed do not commit offense." After truly hearing this, therefore, they all completely abandoned their wives. (03-215-12)
स्कन्दं श्रुत्वा ततो देवा वासवं सहिताब्रुवन्। अविषह्यबलं स्कन्दं जहि शक्राशु माचिरम् ॥०३-२१५-१३॥
skandaṃ śrutvā tato devā vāsavaṃ sahitābruvan। aviṣahya-balaṃ skandaṃ jahi śakrāśu mā-ciram ॥03-215-13॥
[स्कन्दं (skandaṃ) - Skanda (Kārttikeya, son of Śiva); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवा (devā) - the gods; वासवं (vāsavam) - to Vāsava (Indra); सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; अविषह्यबलं (aviṣahya-balaṃ) - of irresistible strength; स्कन्दं (skandaṃ) - Skanda; जहि (jahi) - slay; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra (Indra); आशु (āśu) - quickly; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(Having heard of Skanda, then the gods together spoke to Vāsava: "Of irresistible strength Skanda, slay, O Śakra, quickly, do not delay.")
When the gods heard about Skanda, they all addressed Vāsava (Indra) together: "O Śakra, kill Skanda, who is of irresistible strength, quickly—do not delay." (03-215-13)
यदि वा न निहंस्येनमद्येन्द्रोऽयं भविष्यति। त्रैलोक्यं संनिगृह्यास्मांस्त्वां च शक्र महाबलः ॥०३-२१५-१४॥
yadi vā na nihansyenam adya indro 'yaṃ bhaviṣyati। trailokyaṃ saṃnigṛhyāsmāṃs tvāṃ ca śakra mahābalaḥ॥03-215-14॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; निहंस्येत् (nihansyet) - (he) should not slay; इमम् (imam) - this (one); अद्य (adya) - today; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अयम् (ayam) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - three worlds; संनिगृह्य (saṃnigṛhya) - having subdued; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; शक्र (śakra) - Śakra (Indra); महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength;]
(If or not he should slay this (one) today, Indra this will be; having subdued the three worlds, us, you and, O Śakra of great strength.)
If Indra does not kill this one today, he, having subdued the three worlds, us and you as well, O Śakra of great strength, will become (the ruling Indra). (03-215-14)
स तानुवाच व्यथितो बालोऽयं सुमहाबलः। स्रष्टारमपि लोकानां युधि विक्रम्य नाशयेत् ॥०३-२१५-१५॥
sa tān uvāca vyathito bālo'yaṃ sumahābalaḥ। sraṣṭāram api lokānāṃ yudhi vikramya nāśayet ॥03-215-15॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; व्यथितः (vyathitaḥ) - disturbed; बालः (bālaḥ) - boy; अयम् (ayam) - this; सुमहाबलः (sumahābalaḥ) - very mighty; स्रष्टारम् (sraṣṭāram) - the creator; अपि (api) - even; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having subdued; नाशयेत् (nāśayet) - could destroy;]
(He spoke to them, disturbed: this boy, very mighty, even the creator of the worlds, having subdued in battle, could destroy.)
He spoke to them with anxiety: This boy is extremely powerful; he could destroy even the creator of the worlds after vanquishing him in battle. (03-215-15)
सर्वास्त्वद्याभिगच्छन्तु स्कन्दं लोकस्य मातरः। कामवीर्या घ्नन्तु चैनं तथेत्युक्त्वा च ता ययुः ॥०३-२१५-१६॥
sarvāstvadya abhigacchantu skandaṁ lokasya mātaraḥ। kāma-vīryā ghnantu ca enaṁ tathetyuktvā ca tā yayuḥ॥03-215-16॥
[सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (feminine); तु (tu) - but; indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; अभिगच्छन्तु (abhigacchantu) - may they approach; स्कन्दं (skandam) - Skanda (the deity); लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; कामवीर्याः (kāma-vīryāḥ) - powers born of desire; घ्नन्तु (ghnantu) - may they strike; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him (Skanda); तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; 'thus'; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; च (ca) - and; ता (tā) - they (those mothers); ययुः (yayuḥ) - departed;]
(All (the mothers of the world), but today may approach Skanda; the powers born of desire may strike him, and after saying 'thus', they departed.)
All the mothers of the world today may approach Skanda; the powers of desire may strike him, and having thus said, they departed. (03-215-16)
तमप्रतिबलं दृष्ट्वा विषण्णवदनास्तु ताः। अशक्योऽयं विचिन्त्यैवं तमेव शरणं ययुः ॥०३-२१५-१७॥
tamapratibalaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣaṇṇavadanāstu tāḥ। aśakyo'yaṁ vicintyaivaṁ tameva śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ॥03-215-17॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अप्रतिबलम् (apratibalam) - without equal in strength; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विषण्णवदनाः (viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ) - with despondent faces; तु (tu) - but; ताः (tāḥ) - they (feminine); अशक्यः (aśakyaḥ) - not able to be overcome; अयम् (ayam) - this; विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - after considering; एवम् (evam) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went;]
(Him without equal in strength having seen, with despondent faces but they, not able to be overcome this after considering thus, him only refuge went.)
Seeing him unmatched in strength, those women, their faces despondent, after considering that he could not be overcome, went to him alone for refuge. (03-215-17)
ऊचुश्चापि त्वमस्माकं पुत्रोऽस्माभिर्धृतं जगत्। अभिनन्दस्व नः सर्वाः प्रस्नुताः स्नेहविक्लवाः ॥०३-२१५-१८॥
ūcuś cāpi tvam asmākaṃ putro 'smābhir dhṛtaṃ jagat। abhinandasva naḥ sarvāḥ prasnutāḥ snehaviklavāḥ ॥03-215-18॥
[ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; धृतम् (dhṛtam) - supported; जगत् (jagat) - the world; अभिनन्दस्व (abhinandasva) - you rejoice; नः (naḥ) - us; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (feminine plural); प्रस्नुताः (prasnutāḥ) - overflowing; स्नेहविक्लवाः (snehaviklavāḥ) - overcome by affection;]
(They said: "And also, you are our son; by us the world is supported. Rejoice, all of us, overflowing and overcome by affection." (03-215-18))
"They said: 'You, too, are our son; the world is supported by us. Please accept all of us, overwhelmed and overflowing with affection.'" (03-215-18)
ताः सम्पूज्य महासेनः कामांश्चासां प्रदाय सः। अपश्यदग्निमायान्तं पितरं बलिनां बली ॥०३-२१५-१९॥
tāḥ sampūjya mahāsenaḥ kāmāṁś cāsāṁ pradāya saḥ। apaśyad agnim āyāntam pitaraṁ balināṁ balī॥03-215-19॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - them (those women); सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having worshipped; महासेनः (mahāsenaḥ) - Mahāsena (proper noun); कामान् (kāmān) - desires; च (ca) - and; असाम् (asām) - of them; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having granted; सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; अग्निम् (agnim) - Agni (proper noun, fire); आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the powerful; बली (balī) - most powerful;]
(Them having worshipped, Mahāsena having granted the desires of them, he saw Agni approaching, (his) father, of the powerful the most powerful.)
After worshipping them and granting them their desires, Mahāsena saw his father Agni, the most powerful among the powerful, approaching. (03-215-19)
स तु सम्पूजितस्तेन सह मातृगणेन ह। परिवार्य महासेनं रक्षमाणः स्थितः स्थिरम् ॥०३-२१५-२०॥
sa tu sampūjitastena saha mātṛgaṇena ha। parivārya mahāsenaṃ rakṣamāṇaḥ sthitaḥ sthiram ॥03-215-20॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; सम्पूजितः (sampūjitaḥ) - honored; तेन (tena) - by him; सह (saha) - together with; मातृगणेन (mātṛgaṇena) - along with the group of mothers; ह (ha) - indeed; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; महासेनं (mahāsenaṃ) - Mahāsena; रक्षमाणः (rakṣamāṇaḥ) - protecting; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood; स्थिरम् (sthiram) - firmly;]
(He but honored by him together with the group of mothers indeed, having surrounded Mahāsena protecting, stood firmly.)
But he, having been honored by him together with the group of mothers, indeed stood firmly, surrounding and protecting Mahāsena. (03-215-20)
सर्वासां या तु मातॄणां नारी क्रोधसमुद्भवा। धात्री सा पुत्रवत्स्कन्दं शूलहस्ताभ्यरक्षत ॥०३-२१५-२१॥
sarvāsāṁ yā tu mātṝṇāṁ nārī krodhasamudbhavā। dhātrī sā putravat skandaṁ śūlahastābhyarakṣata॥03-215-21॥

लोहितस्योदधेः कन्या क्रूरा लोहितभोजना। परिष्वज्य महासेनं पुत्रवत्पर्यरक्षत ॥०३-२१५-२२॥
lohitasya udadheḥ kanyā krūrā lohitabhojanā। pariṣvajya mahāsenaṃ putravat paryarakṣata ॥03-215-22॥

(The daughter of Lohita (the red one), the ocean, cruel, blood-eating, having embraced Mahāsena, protected (him) like a son.)
The cruel blood-eating daughter of Lohita, the ocean, embraced Mahāsena and protected him as if he were her own son. (03-215-22)
अग्निर्भूत्वा नैगमेयश्छागवक्त्रो बहुप्रजः। रमयामास शैलस्थं बालं क्रीडनकैरिव ॥०३-२१५-२३॥
agnirbhūtvā naigameyaśchāgavaktro bahuprajaḥ। ramayāmāsa śailasthaṃ bālaṃ krīḍanakairiva॥03-215-23॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; नैगमेयः (naigameyaḥ) - Naigameya (proper noun referring to Kārtikeya); छागवक्त्रः (chāgavaktraḥ) - goat-faced; बहुप्रजः (bahuprajaḥ) - having many offspring; रमयामास (ramayāmāsa) - caused to amuse; शैलस्थम् (śailastham) - abiding on the mountain; बालम् (bālam) - boy; क्रीडनकैः (krīḍanakaiḥ) - with playthings; इव (iva) - as if;]

Agni, having assumed the form of Naigameya, goat-faced and with many offspring, amused the boy dwelling on the mountain with playthings, as if playing with a child. (03-215-23)
