ग्रहाः सोपग्रहाश्चैव ऋषयो मातरस्तथा। हुताशनमुखाश्चापि दीप्ताः पारिषदां गणाः ॥०३-२१६-१॥
grahāḥ sopagrahāś caiva ṛṣayo mātaraś tathā। hutāśanamukhāś cāpi dīptāḥ pāriṣadāṃ gaṇāḥ ॥03-216-1॥
[ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - planets; सोपग्रहाः (sopagrahāḥ) - with their satellites; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; तथा (tathā) - also; हुताशनमुखाः (hutāśanamukhāḥ) - having Agni as their chief; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दीप्ताः (dīptāḥ) - shining; पारिषदां (pāriṣadāṃ) - of the assembly-attendants; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups;]
(Planets with satellites and indeed seers, mothers also; (those) having Agni as chief and also shining groups of assembly-attendants.)
The planets along with their satellites, the seers, the mothers, as well as the shining groups of assembly-attendants headed by Agni, (were present). (03-216-1)
एते चान्ये च बहवो घोरास्त्रिदिववासिनः। परिवार्य महासेनं स्थिता मातृगणैः सह ॥०३-२१६-२॥
ete cānye ca bahavo ghorās tridivavāsinaḥ. parivārya mahāsenaṃ sthitā mātṛ-gaṇaiḥ saha ॥03-216-2॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; घोराः (ghorāḥ) - fearsome; त्रिदिववासिनः (tridivavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of heaven; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; महासेनम् (mahāsenaṃ) - Mahāsena; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; मातृगणैः (mātṛ-gaṇaiḥ) - with groups of mothers; सह (saha) - together with;]
(These and other many fearsome inhabitants of heaven, having surrounded Mahāsena, standing together with groups of mothers.)
These, and many other fearsome dwellers of heaven, stood encircling Mahāsena together with the groups of Mothers. (03-216-2)
संदिग्धं विजयं दृष्ट्वा विजयेप्सुः सुरेश्वरः। आरुह्यैरावतस्कन्धं प्रययौ दैवतैः सह ॥ विजिघांसुर्महासेनमिन्द्रस्तूर्णतरं ययौ ॥०३-२१६-३॥
saṃdigdhaṃ vijayaṃ dṛṣṭvā vijayepsuḥ sureśvaraḥ। āruhyairāvata-skandhaṃ prayayau daivataiḥ saha॥ vijighāṃsur mahāsenaṃ indrastūrṇataraṃ yayau॥03-216-3॥
[संदिग्धं (saṃdigdhaṃ) - doubtful; विजयं (vijayaṃ) - victory; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विजयेप्सुः (vijayepsuḥ) - desiring victory; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - Lord of the gods; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; ऐरावतस्कन्धं (airāvata-skandhaṃ) - shoulder of Airavata; प्रययौ (prayayau) - he went; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together; विजिघांसुः (vijighāṃsuḥ) - seeking to conquer; महासेनम् (mahāsenam) - Mahasena (Kartikeya); इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; तूर्णतरं (tūrṇataraṃ) - more swiftly; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
(Having seen the victory as doubtful, desiring victory, the Lord of the gods, having mounted the shoulder of Airavata, went with the gods together. Seeking to conquer Mahasena, Indra went more swiftly.)
Seeing the victory in doubt and eager for triumph, the Lord of the gods mounted Airavata’s shoulder and departed with the deities. Desiring to defeat Mahasena, Indra proceeded with even greater speed. (03-216-3)
उग्रं तच्च महावेगं देवानीकं महाप्रभम्। विचित्रध्वजसंनाहं नानावाहनकार्मुकम् ॥ प्रवराम्बरसंवीतं श्रिया जुष्टमलङ्कृतम् ॥०३-२१६-४॥
ugraṃ tac ca mahā-vegaṃ devā-nīkaṃ mahā-prabham। vicitra-dhvaja-saṃnāhaṃ nānā-vāhana-kārmukam ॥ pravara-ambara-saṃvītaṃ śriyā juṣṭam-alaṅkṛtam ॥03-216-4॥
[उग्रं (ugram) - fierce; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; महावेगं (mahā-vegam) - of great speed; देवानीकं (devā-nīkam) - divine army; महाप्रभम् (mahā-prabham) - of great splendor; विचित्रध्वजसंनाहं (vicitra-dhvaja-saṃnāham) - adorned with various banners; नानावाहनकार्मुकम् (nānā-vāhana-kārmukam) - with various vehicles and bows; प्रवराम्बरसंवीतं (pravara-ambara-saṃvītam) - clad in excellent garments; श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendor; जुष्टं (juṣṭam) - adorned; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - decorated;]
(Fierce that and of great speed, divine army, of great splendor, adorned with various banners, with various vehicles and bows, clad in excellent garments, with splendor, adorned, decorated.)
That fierce and swift divine army, resplendent and of great splendor, adorned with many kinds of banners, equipped with diverse vehicles and bows, clad in excellent garments and decorated with splendor, stood arrayed. (03-216-4)
विजिघांसुं तदायान्तं कुमारः शक्रमभ्ययात्। विनदन्पथि शक्रस्तु द्रुतं याति महाबलः ॥ संहर्षयन्देवसेनां जिघांसुः पावकात्मजम् ॥०३-२१६-५॥
vijighāṃsuṃ tad āyāntam kumāraḥ śakram abhyayāt। vinadan pathi śakras tu drutam yāti mahābalaḥ॥ saṃharṣayan deva-senāṃ jighāṃsuḥ pāvakātmajam॥ 03-216-5॥
[विजिघांसुम् (vijighāṃsum) - desiring to conquer; तत् (tat) - him; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - the prince; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; अभ्ययात् (abhyayāt) - approached; विनदन् (vinadan) - roaring; पथि (pathi) - on the path; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; तु (tu) - but; द्रुतम् (drutam) - swiftly; याति (yāti) - goes; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; संहर्षयन् (saṃharṣayan) - cheering up; देवसेनाम् (deva-senām) - the army of the gods; जिघांसुः (jighāṃsuḥ) - desiring to conquer; पावकात्मजम् (pāvakātmajam) - the son of Pāvaka (Fire);]
(Desiring to conquer, him approaching, the prince approached Indra. Roaring on the path, Indra but swiftly goes, of great strength. Cheering up the army of the gods, desiring to conquer the son of Pāvaka (Fire). (03-216-5))
When the prince, desiring to vanquish, approached Indra as he came near, Indra of great might advanced swiftly along the road, roaring, delighting the army of gods, intent on defeating the son of Pāvaka. (03-216-5)
सम्पूज्यमानस्त्रिदशैस्तथैव परमर्षिभिः। समीपमुपसम्प्राप्तः कार्त्तिकेयस्य वासवः ॥०३-२१६-६॥
sampūjyamānas tridaśais tathaiva paramarṣibhiḥ। samīpam upasampraaptaḥ kārttikeyasya vāsavaḥ॥03-216-6॥
[सम्पूज्यमानः (sampūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; त्रिदशैः (tridaśaiḥ) - by the gods; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; परमर्षिभिः (paramarṣibhiḥ) - by the supreme sages; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; उपसम्प्राप्तः (upasampraaptaḥ) - having approached; कार्त्तिकेयस्य (kārttikeyasya) - of Kārtikeya; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra);]
(Being honored by the gods and likewise by the supreme sages, having approached near to Kārtikeya, Vāsava (Indra).)
Vāsava (Indra), who was being honored by the gods and also by the great sages, approached near to Kārtikeya. (03-216-6)
सिंहनादं ततश्चक्रे देवेशः सहितः सुरैः। गुहोऽपि शब्दं तं श्रुत्वा व्यनदत्सागरो यथा ॥०३-२१६-७॥
siṁhanādaṁ tataś cakre deveśaḥ sahitaḥ suraiḥ। guho'pi śabdaṁ taṁ śrutvā vyanadad sāgaro yathā ॥03-216-7॥
[सिंहनादं (siṁhanādam) - lion's roar; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रे (cakre) - made; देवेशः (deveśaḥ) - lord of the gods; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; गुहः (guhaḥ) - Guha (Kārttikeya); अपि (api) - also; शब्दं (śabdam) - sound; तं (taṁ) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - after hearing; व्यानदत् (vyanadat) - roared; सागरः (sāgaraḥ) - the ocean; यथा (yathā) - like;]
(Lion's roar then made lord of the gods accompanied by the gods. Guha also sound that after hearing roared like the ocean.)
Then the lord of the gods, together with the gods, uttered a lion's roar. Hearing that sound, Guha also roared like the ocean. (03-216-7)
तस्य शब्देन महता समुद्धूतोदधिप्रभम्। बभ्राम तत्र तत्रैव देवसैन्यमचेतनम् ॥०३-२१६-८॥
tasya śabdena mahatā samuddhūtodadhiprabham। babhrāma tatra tatraiva deva-sainyam acetanam ॥03-216-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; शब्देन (śabdena) - by sound; महता (mahatā) - great; समुद्धूत (samuddhūta) - stirred up; उदधिप्रभम् (udadhiprabham) - resembling the ocean; बभ्राम (babhrāma) - wandered; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; देवसैन्यम् (deva-sainyam) - army of the gods; अचेतनम् (acetanam) - unconscious;]
(Of him by great sound stirred up resembling the ocean wandered there there itself the army of the gods unconscious.)
Stirred up by his great sound, resembling the ocean, the unconscious army of the gods wandered here and there. (03-216-8)
जिघांसूनुपसम्प्राप्तान्देवान्दृष्ट्वा स पावकिः। विससर्ज मुखात्क्रुद्धः प्रवृद्धाः पावकार्चिषः ॥ ता देवसैन्यान्यदहन्वेष्टमानानि भूतले ॥०३-२१६-९॥
jighāṃsūnupasampraaptāndevāndṛṣṭvā sa pāvakiḥ। visasarja mukhātkṛddhaḥ pravṛddhāḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ॥ tā devasainyānyadahanveṣṭamānāni bhūtale॥03-216-9॥
[जिघांसून्-उपसंप्राप्तान् (jighāṃsūn-upasampraaptān) - desiring to kill—having approached; देवान् (devān) - the gods; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सः (saḥ) - he; पावकिः (pāvakiḥ) - the son of Pāvaka (Agni); विससर्ज (visasarja) - emitted; मुखात् (mukhāt) - from the mouth; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angered; प्रवृद्धाः (pravṛddhāḥ) - increased; पावक-अर्चिषः (pāvaka-arciṣaḥ) - the flames of fire; ता (tā) - those; देव-सैन्यानि (deva-sainyāni) - the armies of the gods; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; वेष्टमानानि (veṣṭamānāni) - enveloping; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the earth;]
(Desiring to kill, having approached the gods, having seen (them), he, the son of Pāvaka, in anger, from his mouth, emitted increased flames of fire. Those flames, enveloping, burned the armies of the gods on the earth.)
Seeing the gods, who had approached with the intention to kill, the fiery son of Pāvaka angrily emitted raging flames from his mouth. Those flames, spreading, burned the armies of the gods upon the earth. (03-216-9)
ते प्रदीप्तशिरोदेहाः प्रदीप्तायुधवाहनाः। प्रच्युताः सहसा भान्ति चित्रास्तारागणा इव ॥०३-२१६-१०॥
te pradīpta-śiro-dehāḥ pradīpta-āyudha-vāhanāḥ। prachyutāḥ sahasā bhānti citrāḥ tārā-gaṇāḥ iva ॥03-216-10॥
[ते (te) - they; प्रदीप्तशिरोदेहाः (pradīpta-śiro-dehāḥ) - with blazing heads and bodies; प्रदीप्तायुधवाहनाः (pradīpta-āyudha-vāhanāḥ) - bearing blazing weapons; प्रच्युताः (prachyutāḥ) - fallen; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; भान्ति (bhānti) - shine; चित्राः (citrāḥ) - variegated; तारागणाः (tārā-gaṇāḥ) - groups of stars; इव (iva) - like;]
(They with blazing heads and bodies, bearing blazing weapons, fallen suddenly, shine variegated like groups of stars.)

दह्यमानाः प्रपन्नास्ते शरणं पावकात्मजम्। देवा वज्रधरं त्यक्त्वा ततः शान्तिमुपागताः ॥०३-२१६-११॥
dahyamānāḥ prapannās te śaraṇaṃ pāvakātmajam। devā vajradharaṃ tyaktvā tataḥ śāntimupāgatāḥ ॥03-216-11॥
[दह्यमानाः (dahyamānāḥ) - being burned; प्रपन्नाः (prapannāḥ) - having sought refuge; ते (te) - they; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; पावकात्मजम् (pāvakātmajam) - son of Pāvaka (Agni); देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; वज्रधरम् (vajradharam) - wielder of the thunderbolt; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; उपागताः (upāgatāḥ) - they attained;]
(Being burned, they having sought refuge, the gods, having abandoned the wielder of the thunderbolt, took refuge in the son of Pāvaka (Agni); then they attained peace.)

त्यक्तो देवैस्ततः स्कन्दे वज्रं शक्रोऽभ्यवासृजत्। तद्विसृष्टं जघानाशु पार्श्वं स्कन्दस्य दक्षिणम् ॥ बिभेद च महाराज पार्श्वं तस्य महात्मनः ॥०३-२१६-१२॥
tyakto devais tataḥ skande vajraṁ śakro'bhyavāsṛjat। tadvisṛṣṭaṁ jaghānāśu pārśvaṁ skandasya dakṣiṇam ॥ bibheda ca mahārāja pārśvaṁ tasya mahātmanaḥ ॥03-216-12॥
[त्यक्तः (tyaktaḥ) - abandoned; left; forsaken; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; स्कन्दे (skande) - (at/on/upon) Skanda; वज्रं (vajram) - thunderbolt; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; Indra; अभ्यवासृजत् (abhyavāsṛjat) - launched; hurled towards; तत् (tat) - that; विसृष्टं (visṛṣṭam) - projected; sent forth; discharged; जघान (jaghāna) - struck; hit; wounded; आशु (āśu) - quickly; पार्श्वं (pārśvam) - side; स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - right; बिभेद (bibheda) - pierced; split; broke; च (ca) - and; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पार्श्वं (pārśvam) - side; तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Abandoned by the gods, then on Skanda Śakra hurled the thunderbolt. That discharged (weapon) quickly struck the side of Skanda, the right (side). And it pierced, O great king, the side of that great-souled one. (03-216-12))
Then, when he was abandoned by the gods, Śakra (Indra) hurled the thunderbolt at Skanda. That weapon, being discharged, quickly struck Skanda's right side. And, O great king, it pierced the side of that great-souled one. (03-216-12)
वज्रप्रहारात्स्कन्दस्य सञ्जातः पुरुषोऽपरः। युवा काञ्चनसंनाहः शक्तिधृग्दिव्यकुण्डलः ॥ यद्वज्रविशनाज्जातो विशाखस्तेन सोऽभवत् ॥०३-२१६-१३॥
vajraprahārātskandasya sañjātaḥ puruṣo'paraḥ। yuvā kāñcanasaṃnāhaḥ śaktidhṛgdivyakuṇḍalaḥ॥ yadvajravishanājjāto viśākhastena so'bhavat॥03-216-13॥
[वज्रप्रहारात् (vajraprahārāt) - from the blow of the vajra; स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; सञ्जातः (sañjātaḥ) - was born; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; युवा (yuvā) - young; काञ्चनसंनाहः (kāñcanasaṃnāhaḥ) - having golden armor; शक्तिधृक् (śaktidhṛk) - holding a spear; दिव्यकुण्डलः (divyakuṇḍalaḥ) - with divine earrings; यत् (yat) - who; वज्रविशनात् (vajravishanāt) - from the penetration by the vajra; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; विशाखः (viśākhaḥ) - Viśākha; तेन (tena) - therefore; सः (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(From the blow of the vajra of Skanda, another man was born: young, having golden armor, holding a spear, with divine earrings. Who was born from the penetration by the vajra, he became Viśākha, therefore.)
From the blow of the vajra upon Skanda, another man was born: a youth clad in golden armor, holding a spear, adorned with divine earrings. Because he was born from the vajra's impact, he was therefore called Viśākha. (03-216-13)
तं जातमपरं दृष्ट्वा कालानलसमद्युतिम्। भयादिन्द्रस्ततः स्कन्दं प्राञ्जलिः शरणं गतः ॥०३-२१६-१४॥
taṃ jātam-aparaṃ dṛṣṭvā kālānala-sama-dyutim। bhayād indras tataḥ skandaṃ prāñjaliḥ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ॥03-216-14॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; जातम् (jātam) - born; अपरम् (aparam) - another; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कालानलसमद्युतिम् (kālānala-sama-dyutim) - having brilliance like the fire at the end of time; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - to Skanda; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - to refuge; गतः (gataḥ) - he went;]
(Him, another born, having seen, having brilliance like the fire at the end of time, from fear, Indra, then, to Skanda, with joined palms, to refuge, he went.)
Then, seeing another born with brilliance like the fire at the end of time, Indra, out of fear, went with joined palms to Skanda for refuge. (03-216-14)
तस्याभयं ददौ स्कन्दः सहसैन्यस्य सत्तम। ततः प्रहृष्टास्त्रिदशा वादित्राण्यभ्यवादयन् ॥०३-२१६-१५॥
tasyābhayaṃ dadau Skandaḥ sahasainyasya sattama। tataḥ prahṛṣṭās tridaśā vāditrāṇy abhyavādayan ॥03-216-15॥
[तस्य (tasya) - to him; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; स्कन्दः (Skandaḥ) - Skanda; सहसैन्यस्य (sahasainyasya) - of the one with a mighty army; सत्तम (sattama) - O excellent one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहृष्टाः (prahṛṣṭāḥ) - rejoicing; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the gods; वादित्राणि (vāditrāṇi) - musical instruments; अभ्यवादयन् (abhyavādayan) - they sounded;]
(To him, fearlessness Skanda gave, O excellent one of mighty army. Then, rejoicing, the gods sounded (their) musical instruments.)
Skanda granted fearlessness to him, O best of those with a mighty army. Then, the delighted gods played their musical instruments. (03-216-15)
