स्कन्दस्य पार्षदान्घोराञ्शृणुष्वाद्भुतदर्शनान्। वज्रप्रहारात्स्कन्दस्य जज्ञुस्तत्र कुमारकाः ॥ ये हरन्ति शिशूञ्जातान्गर्भस्थांश्चैव दारुणाः ॥०३-२१७-१॥
skandasya pārṣadān ghorān śṛṇuṣva adbhuta-darśanān। vajra-prahārāt skandasya jajñus tatra kumārakāḥ॥ ye haranti śiśūn jātān garbha-sthānś caiva dāruṇāḥ॥03-217-1॥
[स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; पार्षदान् (pārṣadān) - attendants; घोरान् (ghorān) - terrible; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - hear; अद्भुतदर्शनान् (adbhuta-darśanān) - having wonderful appearances; वज्रप्रहारात् (vajra-prahārāt) - from the blow of the vajra; स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; जज्ञुः (jajñuḥ) - were born; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुमारकाः (kumārakāḥ) - boys; ये (ye) - who; हरन्ति (haranti) - take away; शिशून् (śiśūn) - infants; जातान् (jātān) - born; गर्भस्थान् (garbha-sthān) - those in the womb; चैव (caiva) - and also; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - terrible;]
(Hear the terrible attendants of Skanda, possessing wonderful forms. From the blow of the vajra of Skanda, boys were born there. Those terrible ones who take away born infants and also those (still) in the womb.)
Listen: the dreadful attendants of Skanda, of marvelous appearance—when Skanda was struck by the vajra, boys were born there. These fierce beings take away newborn infants and even those yet in the womb. (03-217-1)
वज्रप्रहारात्कन्याश्च जज्ञिरेऽस्य महाबलाः। कुमाराश्च विशाखं तं पितृत्वे समकल्पयन् ॥०३-२१७-२॥
vajraprahārāt kanyāś ca jajñire'sya mahābalāḥ। kumārāś ca viśākhaṃ taṃ pitṛtve samakalpayan ॥03-217-2॥
[वज्रप्रहारात् (vajraprahārāt) - from the blow of the vajra; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; च (ca) - and; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born; अस्य (asya) - of him; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty; कुमाराः (kumārāḥ) - boys; च (ca) - and; विशाखम् (viśākham) - Viśākha; तम् (tam) - him; पितृत्वे (pitṛtve) - for paternity; समकल्पयन् (samakalpayan) - appointed;]
(From the blow of the vajra, maidens also, of him mighty, were born; and the boys appointed Viśākha, him, for paternity.)
Maidens of great might were born from the blow of the vajra, and the boys appointed Viśākha as their father. (03-217-2)
स भूत्वा भगवान्सङ्ख्ये रक्षंश्छागमुखस्तदा। वृतः कन्यागणैः सर्वैरात्मनीनैश्च पुत्रकैः ॥०३-२१७-३॥
sa bhūtvā bhagavān saṅkhye rakṣaṁś chāgamukhas tadā। vṛtaḥ kanyā-gaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ ātmanīnaiś ca putrakaiḥ॥03-217-3॥
[स (sa) - he; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle; रक्षन् (rakṣan) - protecting; छागमुखः (chāgamukhaḥ) - with a goat's face; तदा (tadā) - then; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; कन्यागणैः (kanyā-gaṇaiḥ) - by groups of girls; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; आत्मनीनैः (ātmanīnaiḥ) - his own; च (ca) - and; पुत्रकैः (putrakaiḥ) - by sons;]
(He, having become the Lord, in the battle protecting, with a goat's face then, surrounded by all groups of girls and by his own sons.)
Then, the Lord, having assumed the form of one with a goat's face, while protecting in the battle, was surrounded by all groups of girls and his own sons. (03-217-3)
मातॄणां प्रेक्षतीनां च भद्रशाखश्च कौशलः। ततः कुमारपितरं स्कन्दमाहुर्जना भुवि ॥०३-२१७-४॥
mātṝṇāṃ prekṣatīnāṃ ca bhadraśākhaś ca kauśalaḥ। tataḥ kumārapitaraṃ skandam āhur janā bhuvi॥03-217-4॥
[मातॄणां (mātṝṇāṃ) - of mothers; प्रेक्षतीनां (prekṣatīnāṃ) - of those who gaze; च (ca) - and; भद्रशाखः (bhadraśākhaḥ) - Bhadraśākha (a proper name); च (ca) - and; कौशलः (kauśalaḥ) - Kauśala (a proper name); ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुमारपितरं (kumārapitaraṃ) - Kumāra's father; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda (proper name); आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) called; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Of mothers, of those who gaze, and Bhadraśākha and Kauśala; then people on earth called Skanda Kumāra's father.)
Among mothers, gazers, as well as Bhadraśākha and Kauśala, therefore, people on earth called Skanda the father of Kumāra. (03-217-4)
रुद्रमग्निमुमां स्वाहां प्रदेशेषु महाबलाम्। यजन्ति पुत्रकामाश्च पुत्रिणश्च सदा जनाः ॥०३-२१७-५॥
rudramagnimumāṃ svāhāṃ pradeśeṣu mahābalām। yajanti putrakāmāś ca putriṇaś ca sadā janāḥ॥03-217-5॥
[रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; अग्निम् (agnim) - Agni; उमाम् (umām) - Umā; स्वाहाम् (svāhām) - Svāhā; प्रदेशेषु (pradeśeṣu) - in regions; महाबलाम् (mahābalām) - of great strength; यजन्ति (yajanti) - they worship; पुत्रकामाः (putrakāmāḥ) - those desiring sons; च (ca) - and; पुत्रिणः (putriṇaḥ) - those having children; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(Rudra, Agni, Umā, Svāhā, in regions, of great strength, they worship, those desiring sons and those having children and always people.)
People desiring sons and those who have children always worship Rudra, Agni, Umā, and Svāhā—beings of great strength—in various regions. (03-217-5)
यास्तास्त्वजनयत्कन्यास्तपो नाम हुताशनः। किं करोमीति ताः स्कन्दं सम्प्राप्ताः समभाषत ॥०३-२१७-६॥
yās tās tv ajanayat kanyās tapo nāma hutāśanaḥ। kiṃ karomīti tāḥ skandaṃ samprāptāḥ samabhāṣata ॥03-217-6॥
[याः (yāḥ) - who (those who); ताः (tāḥ) - those; तु (tu) - but; अजनयत् (ajanayat) - produced; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; तपः नाम (tapaḥ nāma) - named penance; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - Fire (Agni); किं करोमि (kiṃ karomi) - what do I do; इति (iti) - thus; ताः (tāḥ) - they; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda; सम्प्राप्ताः (samprāptāḥ) - having approached; समभाषत (samabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Those maidens whom Fire (named Penance) produced—what do I do?—thus, having approached Skanda, they addressed him.)
The maidens whom Fire, called Penance, produced—those maidens, wondering 'What should I do?', approached Skanda and spoke to him. (03-217-6)
मातर ऊचुः॥
mātar ūcuḥ॥
[मातर (mātar) - mothers; (vocative plural of माता; addressing as 'O mothers;'); ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; (third person plural perfect of √vac, to speak);]
(O mothers said;)
The mothers said;
भवेम सर्वलोकस्य वयं मातर उत्तमाः। प्रसादात्तव पूज्याश्च प्रियमेतत्कुरुष्व नः ॥०३-२१७-७॥
bhavema sarvalokasya vayaṃ mātara uttamāḥ। prasādāttava pūjyāśca priyam etat kuruṣva naḥ ॥03-217-7॥
[भवेम (bhavema) - may we become; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all worlds; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; उत्तमाः (uttamāḥ) - excellent; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; तव (tava) - of you; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - worthy of honor; च (ca) - and; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; एतत् (etat) - this; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(May we become the excellent mothers of all worlds; by your grace, worthy of honor and dear—this, do for us.)
Let us become the noble mothers of all worlds; by your grace, make us worthy of honor and affection. (03-217-7)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

Markandeya said.
सोऽब्रवीद्बाढमित्येवं भविष्यध्वं पृथग्विधाः। अशिवाश्च शिवाश्चैव पुनः पुनरुदारधीः ॥०३-२१७-८॥
so'bravīdbāḍhamityevaṃ bhaviṣyadhvaṃ pṛthagvidhāḥ। aśivāśca śivāścaiva punaḥ punarudāradhīḥ ॥03-217-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; बाढम् (bāḍham) - so be it; इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this way; भविष्यध्वम् (bhaviṣyadhvam) - you shall become; पृथग्विधाः (pṛthagvidhāḥ) - of different kinds; अशिवाः (aśivāḥ) - inauspicious ones; च (ca) - and; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious ones; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - noble-minded he;]
(He said 'so be it', thus, in this way, you shall become of different kinds, inauspicious and auspicious indeed, again and again, noble-minded he.)
He said, 'So be it. In this way, you shall become of various kinds, both inauspicious and auspicious, again and again,' said the noble-minded one. (03-217-8)
ततः सङ्कल्प्य पुत्रत्वे स्कंदं मातृगणोऽगमत्। काकी च हलिमा चैव रुद्राथ बृहली तथा ॥ आर्या पलाला वै मित्रा सप्तैताः शिशुमातरः ॥०३-२१७-९॥
tataḥ saṅkalpya putratve skaṁdaṁ mātṛgaṇo'gamata. kākī ca halimā caiva rudrātha bṛhalī tathā ॥ āryā palālā vai mitrā sapta etāḥ śiśumātaraḥ ॥03-217-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सङ्कल्प्य (saṅkalpya) - having resolved; पुत्रत्वे (putratve) - in the state of sonship; स्कंदं (skaṁdam) - Skanda; मातृगणः (mātṛgaṇaḥ) - the group of mothers; अगमत् (agamat) - approached; काकी (kākī) - Kaki; च (ca) - and; हलिमा (halimā) - Halima; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; रुद्रा (rudrā) - Rudra; अथ (atha) - and also; बृहली (bṛhalī) - Brihali; तथा (tathā) - thus; आर्या (āryā) - Arya; पलाला (palālā) - Palala; वै (vai) - indeed; मित्रा (mitrā) - Mitra; सप्त (sapta) - seven; एताः (etāḥ) - these; शिशुमातरः (śiśumātaraḥ) - mothers of the child;]
(Then, having resolved regarding sonship, the group of mothers approached Skanda. Kaki and Halima indeed, Rudra also Brihali thus; Arya, Palala indeed, Mitra—these seven are the mothers of the child.)
Then, after resolving to make Skanda their son, the group of mothers approached him. Kaki, Halima, Rudra, Brihali, Arya, Palala, and Mitra—these seven are the mothers of the child. (03-217-9)
एतासां वीर्यसम्पन्नः शिशुर्नामातिदारुणः। स्कन्दप्रसादजः पुत्रो लोहिताक्षो भयङ्करः ॥०३-२१७-१०॥
etāsāṃ vīryasampannaḥ śiśur nāmātidāruṇaḥ। skandaprasādajaḥ putro lohitākṣo bhayaṅkaraḥ॥03-217-10॥
[एतासां (etāsāṃ) - of these; (feminine genitive plural); वीर्यसम्पन्नः (vīryasampannaḥ) - endowed with strength; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - child; नाम (nāma) - named; अतिदारुणः (atidāruṇaḥ) - very fierce; स्कन्दप्रसादजः (skandaprasādajaḥ) - born from the favor of Skanda; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; लोहिताक्षः (lohitākṣaḥ) - red-eyed; भयङ्करः (bhayaṅkaraḥ) - terrifying;]
(Of these, endowed with strength, a child named Atidāruṇa; born from the favor of Skanda, the son Lohitākṣa, terrifying red-eyed.)
Among these, a vigorous child named Atidāruṇa was born, the son Lohitākṣa—red-eyed and terrifying—through the grace of Skanda. (03-217-10)
एष वीराष्टकः प्रोक्तः स्कन्दमातृगणोद्भवः। छागवक्त्रेण सहितो नवकः परिकीर्त्यते ॥०३-२१७-११॥
eṣa vīrāṣṭakaḥ proktaḥ skandamātṛ-gaṇodbhavaḥ। chāgavaktreṇa sahito navakaḥ parikīrtyate ॥03-217-11॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; वीराष्टकः (vīrāṣṭakaḥ) - eightfold of heroes; प्रोक्तः (proktaḥ) - has been spoken; स्कन्दमातृगणोद्भवः (skandamātṛ-gaṇodbhavaḥ) - arisen from the group of Skanda’s mothers; छागवक्त्रेण (chāgavaktreṇa) - with Chāgavaktrā; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; नवकः (navakaḥ) - ninth; परिकीर्त्यते (parikīrtyate) - is declared;]
(This eightfold group of heroes, arisen from the group of Skanda’s mothers, has been spoken; together with Chāgavaktrā, the ninth is declared.)

षष्ठं छागमयं वक्त्रं स्कन्दस्यैवेति विद्धि तत्। षट्शिरोऽभ्यन्तरं राजन्नित्यं मातृगणार्चितम् ॥०३-२१७-१२॥
ṣaṣṭhaṃ chāgamayaṃ vaktraṃ skandasyaiva iti viddhi tat। ṣaṭśiro’bhyantaraṃ rājannityaṃ mātṛgaṇārcitam ॥03-217-12॥
[षष्ठं (ṣaṣṭham) - the sixth; छागमयम् (chāgamayam) - of goat form; वक्त्रम् (vaktram) - face; स्कन्दस्यैव (skandasya eva) - of Skanda only; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; तत् (tat) - that; षट्-शिरः (ṣaṭ-śiraḥ) - six-headed; अभ्यन्तरम् (abhyantaram) - inner; राजन् (rājan) - O King; नित्यं (nityam) - always; मातृगण-आर्चितम् (mātṛgaṇa-ārcitam) - worshipped by the group of Mothers;]
(The sixth, goat-formed face, of Skanda only—thus know that; six-headed inner, O King, always worshipped by the group of Mothers.)
Know that the sixth, goat-faced head belongs to Skanda alone; O King, this six-headed inner form is always worshipped by the company of Mothers. (03-217-12)
षण्णां तु प्रवरं तस्य शीर्षाणामिह शब्द्यते। शक्तिं येनासृजद्दिव्यां भद्रशाख इति स्म ह ॥०३-२१७-१३॥
ṣaṇṇāṃ tu pravaraṃ tasya śīrṣāṇāmiha śabdyate। śaktiṃ yenāsṛjaddivyāṃ bhadraśākha iti sma ha॥03-217-13॥
[षण्णां (ṣaṇṇām) - of the six; तु (tu) - but; प्रवरं (pravaraṃ) - the best; तस्य (tasya) - of his; शीर्षाणाम् (śīrṣāṇām) - among heads; इह (iha) - here; शब्द्यते (śabdyate) - is called; शक्तिं (śaktiṃ) - power; येन (yena) - by whom; असृजत् (asṛjat) - he created; दिव्यां (divyāṃ) - divine; भद्रशाख (bhadraśākha) - Bhadraśākha; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(Of the six, but the best of his heads here is called; the power by whom he created the divine Bhadraśākha, thus indeed certainly.)
But among his six heads, the best here is called that (head) by which he created the divine power (Śakti) called Bhadraśākha, thus indeed (is said). (03-217-13)
इत्येतद्विविधाकारं वृत्तं शुक्लस्य पञ्चमीम्। तत्र युद्धं महाघोरं वृत्तं षष्ठ्यां जनाधिप ॥०३-२१७-१४॥
ity etad vividha-ākāraṃ vṛttaṃ śuklasya pañcamīm। tatra yuddhaṃ mahāghoraṃ vṛttaṃ ṣaṣṭhyāṃ janādhipa ॥03-217-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतद् (etad) - this; विविधाकारं (vividhākāram) - of various forms; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - occurred; शुक्लस्य (śuklasya) - of the bright (fortnight); पञ्चमीम् (pañcamīm) - fifth (day); तत्र (tatra) - there; युद्धं (yuddham) - battle; महाघोरं (mahāghoram) - very terrible; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - occurred; षष्ठ्यां (ṣaṣṭhyām) - on the sixth (day); जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O king;]
(Thus, this event of manifold forms occurred on the fifth (day) of the bright fortnight. There, the very terrible battle happened on the sixth, O king.)
Thus, this varied event took place on the fifth day of the bright fortnight. There, the extremely fierce battle occurred on the sixth, O king. (03-217-14)
